Tommy Lloyd Is the Next Coach at Arizona

"Matt. Norlander is here with me in. Arizona has found shaun miller's replacement deadline when we talked about this after shawn miller was fired. We went through a list of candidates. And i think we sort of settled on the end of the day. I think it's going to be a gonzaga associate head coach. Tommy lloyd or former arizona star current pacific head coach damon stoudamire fast forward to today. It is tommy lloyd. He is leaving gonzaga. He will be the next head coach of the wildcats. Your thoughts. yeah. We have a listen. We have a long time coach in waiting for program legend. Who's been there decades deciding to leave and and and take a job in the pac twelve and It's mike hopkins all over can don't just kidding. But the parallels are actually there will credit an unnamed person. We both know who who made that to made. That comparison this i think is a pretty good higher now. This has been buzzed about. Since before shawn miller got fired. I have talked to a couple of people out for your. Oh quick i get your thoughts on it. There are a couple of people i've talked to. Who will never be not convinced. That tommy lloyd was approached about this like a month ago and basically said we want you to be the next coach in gonna fire shawn miller. I'm not saying that happened. I'm telling you there are people that believe this and this has been wired for a long time now. There were a couple of days here the past couple of days where the search kind of went on a not a pause but they topped the brakes through more interviews. That happened on tuesday. And they did legitimately interview miles. Simon damon stoudamire. Jason terry josh passenger. All these people were interviewed. There's a belief that eric muscleman whose doors to get himself his own new contract which if true or not. I don't think he needed arizona to get paid the way he got paid. But good on him. So

"Black. Matt norlander is here with me before we get into it did you see the tweet the other day from the guy? Oh, I saw the tweet from the guy and when I got the tweet from the guy and listeners don't know what the hell we're talking about but you'll be clued in just a second here I had never. Thought or heard it that way and then I went back and I brought back the podcast I brought it up. So for everyone listening, I want you to stop listening right now go back to the very start of this forty five seconds ago listen to parishes Intro, and if you want to come back to this point in the podcast, you'll understand what we're saying. Gene. So, I got a tweet forgot nick and he said that he sort of new to college basketball but he's listening to the podcast and up until few days ago he didn't realize that leaky black is a real person. So he thought that as I was introducing the PODCAST, I would say welcome back to the CBS sports eye on college basketball podcast where we sometimes discuss camel fighting. And then like period and and then I would say leaky Black Matt norlander is here with me dot your name was Liike Blackman Hinder. This is this is. This is now this is now you name for me leaky Black Matt norlander. Okay Yeah but so yeah, because obviously every podcast arts the same way with GP with those lines and it's just your cadence I wonder if this gentleman is the only person, he might be off obviously podcast vets no, the the leaky black story but. where we sometimes camel fighting and leaky Black Matt norlander is either with me. From now on far as nick and I are concerned, you're you're you're you're leaky black, Matt norlander it does speak to the lack of impact leaky black is made on the sport needed him to be somebody I know I listen he's actually I think he's got a decent chance. It'd be relatively good player next season whatever we can have a season and then kind of capacity. But. I Love I. Love those random occasional tweets reviews the ipod section just with. You guys sometimes catch onto something or I notice something that GP and I will totally missed. So that was that was a funny thing that I did come across. Yes I was going to bring it up. Didn't I didn't respond on twitter, but it did it did strike me and then I went back and listened to the most recent podcast intro and I was like Yep sure enough. It does sound like he's calling me Leakey Black Matt Norlander Leaky Black and jazz the Knicks. Let's start with something. I wrote about this week the Philadelphia Seventy sixers have fired Brett Brown you probably heard Villanova coach Jay. Wright is reportedly Among the candidates to replace him understandably. Fans are now somewhat nervous because nobody likes to lose a church fire future Naismith Memorial Hall of fame coach. So. Norlander let me ask you this should over things be nervous that they're about to lose their future. Naismith. Memorial. Hall of Fame Coach is the coaching carousel about to get a late August early September spin. It's not. At least I don't think. So Jj right now everyone go read parishes column where he basically lays out why Jay Wright will be it wouldn't be a surprise Jay Wright were legitimately consider taking the Philadelphia Seventy sixers job and it hasn't really have so much to do with the seventy six ers roster or their current situation, and it's more about what it means in on your in your day to day life to be an NBA coach versus being a college coach the one thing. that. You did not have in the column which would make sense because I don't think it would serve the purpose of writing the call and the way that you did is the big benefit. One of the major benefits that college basketball has over the NBA is, yes. guys get fired of course but one sure a made guy in college which she right? Obviously. So clearly is it is you kind of made quick allusion to it but I think there's a big difference between like. Let's just use. Brad Stevens has an example Brad. Stevens is obviously security his job but Brad? Stevens had shoe non-playoff seasons with the Celtics third season. He'd be staring at getting fired. You can get fired in the NBA coach of the year it's almost become this. This weird taboo with the amount of times that guys will win coach of the year and get fired the next season. Jay Wright would never have that problem in college and I think that is a major benefit to his current situation. I don't think Villanova fans should be nervous I don't think Jay Wright is leaving Villanova for the seventy sixers It's weird that. This is a all coming down. Now I'm actually in the midst of Reading Dana O'Neil's book that she wrote after Villanova won its first national championship called longshots about halfway through it but earlier in the book, she makes reference here and there to rights past opportunities with affiliate Philadelphia Seventy sixers and reasons why he obviously did not take the job then I. Think most of that stuff still applies. Now, we can get into details about team has for next season in what he's built there, but I don't find this to be a high probability situation. It would bring a hell of a lot of intrigue to college basketball if we got to that point but I don't see Jay Wright leaving to take the seventy sixers job. Because I think how he has Villanova running right now the point on the calendar the conversation. Devon told you rights been having with powerbrokers about what they're trying to do to salvage season I just don't think it makes a lot of sense for him to pull the rip cord and leave the NBA now and he's had the chance before and he hasn't taken..

"It is a big night for those folks. Matt norlander is my guest Matt good. Have you back? How are you? them it's great to be back in before we start talking i just got a mentioned something real quick off the top it was about eleven twelve years ago when i was working in a humble weekly newspaper office and i kill time during the afternoon working in connecticut i listened to the jim rome radio stream and it was then it was then that i i heard a smack off and so i've been a listener ever since i know we're on the eve of a massive event here so good luck tomorrow can't wait to listen to get it on the podcast there and is jeff richmond going to be a part of this because if he is i mean my money's on him i hope that he gets involved somehow that's that's like a top caller in the show history so do we know the status of jeff in richmond mamane you know for a fact how much i like you how much i respect you how proud i am a you for coming up the way you have what have you heard a smack off since those eleven years ago no kidding yeah he's in he's in but he was in last year and he called in didn't get on the air so i'm not sure as a smack off champ he is invited but he is not I'm calling lately, man. I'm not sure what to expect. And those would say is going to call he's going to make the same call that he made twenty years ago when he won. That's fine. If it's not him, then I want the legendary guy from Boston who talked about Andy Pettitte, nostrils, like we've got to track down that guy 'cause that's like, I cracked up. You're so right. Man. You I so appreciate the thoughts. I'm glad you found that you'll back then tomorrow is the big day in really appreciate you saying, thanks so much, or so big night for you. There's no doubt that time Williamson is going to be the first pick tonight. Matt, just how high is ceiling. In other words, we talking about an all star in all NBA player. And if so how quickly. Yeah. He's got a really high ceiling if we want to be realistic about this as possible. His feeling I think is top twenty player in NBA history. We're talking feeling. Not not. Absolutely. What they'll be? But if you felt what he didn't college, and if you combine his marketability, the megawatts mile, the talent the fact that we haven't had much buzz around the player heading into a draft since LeBron James, and before LeBron James who was, like, we've had maybe five players ever. If you can tap into the all that avoid injuries are concerned about, you know, his body type the way he plays if he prone four years from now to have his eases go on him to blow on him. No one wants to see that. But he's just so heavy, and so he has no comparison like, Shawn Kemp might be the closest thing. And even he's not that kind of close overall so tonight it's going to be all about vying, Williamson as it should be. But I think the draft will be known for that for the top three for him and John Moran and RJ Barrett. And then I think you're gonna see a slew of trades. Gonna it'll be interesting for NBA fans because don's the big story. What does he say you know what do we go through with here? What New Orleans but New Orleans has that fourth pick him. Did they trade it out of it or were they good with Lonzo ball and might they take your Culver hunter, there's a lot of fascinating things there because it'll be about die on, and then what you put around him because now he becomes obviously one of the biggest stars in the NBA, because he was he I would argue that he was the biggest story in basketball for the past eight months. How often how often does that ever the case where a college basketball player is the biggest thing in all about all levels of basketball season? Dying applied there and stuff into the league will be one of the biggest things for decade running problems point, Matt, norlander joining us, he's part of CBS sports HQ's live draft coverage. And again, that gets away at ten P PM eastern. Mount. You mentioned John Morand. Let me ask you about that. Because the expectation is, of course he'll go. Number two. You have been all over him for quite some time before we talk about his game at the next level Zion was a guy who had. Amazing hype for years any lived up to it. Maranto nearly went undiscovered. How do you explain that? What happened? Well, it's kind of an explicable and down with Josh that parents and family about that and his story, so well told at this point, if anyone happens to think that that's not millionaire with it. I mean he was not. He was not highly recruited. He went to a tuna you tournament, and they separated kids at the start of it and said, okay, we think you're good enough. You're going to be in the main gym all your other guys. I don't over there, the other gym, or no one's gonna be paying any attention, and it was then assistant at Murray state who just because he wanted MAC. He was hungry he stopped in and he's drama rent dominating three on three drills. And thanks. This kid might actually be something. It's fascinating to me how he has made this job, because I talked to Murray, say, coach Matt McMahon at the end of drama rants freshman year and I said, listen, if they're possibilities, their potential that, you know, if he was really good at off more. He might be able to, to leave after two years Murray state put in point guard, you know, campaign, I think Hanan and now you got drama rent, the, the program is actually established itself is sort of a mid major point guard do. And he told me he had met, we have got significant interest already from NBA teams right now. And up the time this is off the record. But here we are now he said, listen, John rent is ninety nine percent leaving for the day after a software, and if he wants to being a lottery pick on telling you, it will not be shocked whatsoever credit Matt McMahon. Mary because before he blow up as a sophomore well before that he thought that he had a legit lottery talent on offense. And as we turn out. See become a top player and a rare case of a mid major point guard going top three then MBA draft. We almost never see that guy's amazing. Like we're rolling beat role CBS sports network. And I'm listening to you and I'm watching the video. Just absolutely amazing. How explosive this guy is how unique he is. And then the wisdom has been that New York, we'll take RJ Barrett. Number three, there have been some questions about his game recently, especially when it comes to being compared to Zaire on in your opinion. How fair is that and those questions not fair at all. And in fact, if you hear any sort of talk about how RJ Barrett was overshadowed at two. Overlooked undervalued. It's if the crock it's not true whatsoever. RJ Barrett set the ACC freshman scoring record nuts. Do cress from scoring record the ACC freshman, scoring record Don Williamson. It's all of those games in February going into March with RJ Barrett leading the team maintain that number one seat seats. In fact, the number one overall seed was fantastic score. Remember, a year ago had we've been talking on on draft day and said, okay. Look forward to twenty nineteen did Barrett was in near consensus forecast, number one pick the fact that he drops the three is no big indictment on him or his game whatsoever. I think he's ready and tailor-made score at the level immediately. And I don't think there are any sure things in this draft. And I would define a short thing as multiple future all star even Zeile Willie Williamson if I don't, I don't necessarily think you Bank that, if you had to bet your life on it, I wouldn't bet that, but I think there is the second guy Belo's I on that I think is most likely to be a multiple time all started because he's crap. Eighty south walking can get into the lane well-suited well from deep, and I think that he is going to walk into a situation New York, where he will be set up to thrive and it'll be sitting, and he is. I know he is ready. I think that you will see when we look up first second week of November, Jim, we're gonna notice immediately RJ Barrett making impact on the game for his team similar to what Luca dodgers did for Dallas, Matt norlander joins me for another moment. Or so we know he's ready. In fact, we know the first three already but the thinking spin that this is in effect a three player draft. How accurate is that assessment? I think this is my least favorite talking point of the calendar year so far. Okay because it's never only a two player three player four player draft. It's that's because the only reason why this has come up is because it has been a consensus worth Diane than jaw than RJ. You almost never get that going into draft where it's weeks ahead of time months ahead of time. The one the two of the three in order are. And so, because of that, at the lazy talking point that we fall back on guarantee a guarantee, you look, up to three years from now there's going to be two or three second round from this draft is going to be four or five guys pick between ten and thirty in the strap that are going to be starting level NBA players. The trick obviously is identifying and not just that, but I think the one thing about the draft that does not ever get talked about enough, what NBA general managers and talent evaluate what they're trying to do with these guys can all play basketball. Can you do not get to the level where you're twenty draft pick and you're going to be a bus? No, it's about alchemy about who you are the person the skill set. You have the exact situation you go through the city that you moved. There are all of these elements that have to click in order for you. To be successful NBA player because they're only so many roster spots are only been affecting place, just because some guy got might get picked eighteen and wind up having ten times the career, some guy that goes eight it doesn't mean necessarily that the guy that was eight was doomed to fail. He just wound up going to the raw situation. So I'm always fascinated to see which players get picked to which franchises and are they allowed to develop, you know, I've had a couple of coaches specifically talk to me about how they hope there guys go to certain franchises over others because with an NBA circles and within college basketball circles certain franchises have better reputations in some areas and other specifically pertains to Claire development. So keep an eye on that as well. I sometimes think we just completely dismiss these guys and reputations in the Smith. How good they work coming into the draft. When in reality, it's very much about the situation. They walk into hell coaching staff sets them up for success, my CBS calling Matt norlander joining us right now about one last thing bowl bowl is one of the more polarizing players in the draft. You have him going to Boston. And number twenty two some made the case if you were healthy all season long, he would have been one of the first guys off the board. How do you balance his potential with the concerns about his health? That's the great balance there. And I've got him going to Boston because Boston have three picks I think if they guarantee they trade, at least one of those six, and if they don't trade it with Volvo wind up wrapping him. He's the kind of gamble that they can take but math and concerns on the defensive end concerned about health overall concerns about how much he really wants to play the game loves to play the game. Obviously, most people listen to remember how interesting has father was..

"I was so thrilled to join and be a team that if my job had entailed standing on the sideline and picking up the scrunched up Gatorade cuts. I would have been thrilled or so if you were talking to a young Amy Trask right now or you were talking to somebody who just starting out right now. You were talking to somebody who's making a big change right now. What would your advice be? Well, I would give three pieces of advice to someone starting out if the question came from a young woman, which often they do my first piece of advice would be gender-specific, when I'm asked, what should a young woman due to advance in her career point one stop thinking about the fact that you're a woman if you don't want others thinking about your gender? It makes no sense to think about your gender. If you wanna go into a business setting and have gender, not be an issue. Don't make it an issue. So point one is gender specific. Stop thinking about your gender to is gender neutral work hard, hard work matters. It really, really matters. And when you think you can't work any harder. Find a way to work harder, Jim. I know you've done that your whole career. I can't tell you the number of times sitting in my office, people walk in and say, you know, how do we get a job like yours. And I say, well, you know, this when you get here in the morning, Mike. Cars already here. And do you notice when you leave at night? My car is still here, hard work matters. And the third piece of advice goes right to the heart of what you asked tonight, own self be true. My biggest moments in my view have come when I've been true to myself, and my biggest failures, and stumbles and fumbles have been when I tried to be something or someone I'm not. Amy Trask NFL analyst for CBS sports spent nearly thirty years as executive with the Oakland Raiders shairman of the board of the big three league, author of you to go. She ate like a girl and remember the big three kicks off against Morrow night, this time eight PM eastern on CBS. Amy, you and I have had a lot of conversations over the years. We are both at the idea center downtown, Minneapolis, Norrland, refresh my memory is this the first ever in person college basketball podcast. I feel like we've done one of these before in a hotel room. You were extremely uncomfortable. You look more comfortable right now than normal feel comfortable. We'll finally get into do this live and in person, I am very happy to to be with you based to face here. But yes, downtown, Minneapolis. You're done with CBS sports network duty. I'm done with CBS sports. H Q duty continued to watch us all weekend. But we want to get a podcast of the people here. So you can prep for the national title game this national semifinals, I should say on Saturday. High feeling GP fell better. You felt better better good last night. It's a long night. It was a long, but that was a good time late if you were trying to. Estimate. Would you say we stayed out last night? Well, I left before you house time, did you leave? So I can try to figure out my life. I left probably about one fifteen I had to tap out of there. And you didn't look close to leave in. Should we mention the establishment? We were at or do you? Remember when I called you. It was the Rojo Mexican bar and grill. It was nice little scene. Downtown minneapolis. Actually, I like the way that the the whole cities laid out. And so yes, that's where we were with many many a person. Do you want to get to the podcast and counter that we have there? We had a nice podcast encounter. "Like, this is just a five twelve that has no buzz around it whatsoever. So watch this wind up being the best one will wait and see just as a note, by the way, three of the four twelve come from traditional mid major leagues. So just keep an eye on that. I don't know if that's going to be a good thing or bad thing, but between Mexico state Murray state, and now liberty only Oregon is the is twelve from power conference. So I will I'll take Ben Jalan the team in the tournament for the first time in ten years. And I guess this means GP, I'm not trying to give you work delicate. But I the last time howl wanna tournament game would have been like what twenty thirteen four to last year at UCLA, which would have been two thousand thirteen. Okay. No. He didn't win a game that. Yeah. That's Jordan Adams broke his foot. You're right. Twenty twenty twelve and they lost to Minnesota. So it would be no twenty twelve didn't go to the NC double. Tournament. We'll boy let me look has got to be two thousand eleven right. Two thousand eleven beat Michigan state in the first round loss to Florida. We go in these tech at round. So the last time been Hal in one and incidentally tournament gay. This would have been a hell of a trivia time. It was may was March seventeenth two thousand eleven officially more than eight years removed. We agree. He's gonna get it. I think so misses me stay you got it pegged. Exactly right there. Just an anonymous basketball team because when people talked about the SEC this year. It was all Kentucky Tennessee, then it became LSU for a little while. I guess recently. It was all burned. Mississippi State was never a part of those conversations. But this is also true. Mississippi State didn't spend a single day this season ranked outside of the top thirty Kimba not one they dropped out of the people. But they were in the top thirty at Kim palm every day of the season. And. Got to as high as nineteenth at one point. So they were they were between nineteen and. Thirty. No. But like it's even better than that twenty nine they were between nineteen and twenty nine that Kim bomb all season. Like, they never. They never liked jumped in the top ten, but they never fell out of the top thirty and that sort of the way you operate off of the radar. You never part of the elite that people are talking about. But you never bad. We're wondering why you're disappointing either. They were just you know, good just good all season. But I think good enough to get past liberty. I've got Mississippi State one in the game and Mississippi State also covering the six and a half nine twenty pm eastern on Friday game in the mid west regional, it's on TNT. It's in Columbus. Ohio North Carolina's the one seed leaky blacks team, I own is the sixteen seed I've got North Carolina win in the game easily. I've got North Carolina covering the twenty three and a half. I do as well. And so Mike francesa. I don't I don't know that what happened. Oh, Tim clueless. Iona coach win on Mike francesa radio show and francesa was basically like in. So many words you said you're gonna be out of the tournament. Today's you got no shot against you. And see what you might be true. When you watch when your radio show, and you bring the coach on like, he just doesn't give an f. So. Yeah. Anyway, Tim clueless went on for ancestors show and francesa was basic who has obviously never seen. I play the season. I can only imagine that that clip got circulated just a little bit there. So yeah. Okay. So nine forty pm eastern in the east regional issues. The eight seed UCF is the nine seed US UCF is a one point favorite. This game will be played on CBS. America's most watched network network stars. I will ride taco fall Taylor Aubrey dock ins in this one..

"And it's super easy is I really do highly endorsed that. But I saw Oregon was favored when I did Monday. So maybe it's bounced back to Wisconsin. That's pretty interesting. I have Wisconsin winning. I have Wisconsin covering. I'm not on the Oregon hype train at all I think badgers win. It will be low scoring. I don't think they win this cover this easily. I think it might be a three or four point spread. But regardless give me Bucky. Oregon is on a one two three four five six seven eight game winning streak that includes two wins over the Pac twelve champion Washington. You're not a believer in them, not against Wisconsin. I'm not a believer in them against Wisconsin. They're playing well. They're playing hot. But no not here. This is not a twelve over five that I think happens I've got Oregon winning the game. So I've got Oregon plus one point five, but I don't feel strongly about it. But if you're going to take a twelve five that seems like the most obvious one to jump on depending on how you feel about Murray state Marquette six fifty pm eastern on Friday got a game in the mid west regional, Utah state is eight Washington is the nine this is in Columbus, Ohio and Utah state from the mountain west conference three point favorite over the Pac twelve champs. Let's just stop there for a second. How how wild is it that the mountain west mountain west team is a three point favorite over the outright? Pac twelve champion that probably doesn't happen. Too often, great point GP and not only that but seated. Higher. I mean, those things go hand in hand. I you state is the best eight seat out there. And I think Washington is the best night's out there. So while I have a lot of intriguing Syracuse Baylor. I'm actually most looking forward to this game. I think that Utah state will win I think it will cover. Matisse Stibal Washington's the best player on the floor. Same. No slouch. I mean, he was meant let's player of the year. And he's a good player. But I think I think Washington is the best player, but I will still ride with Utah state to win. I think this has highly entertaining potential. I'm taking cover when these picks up on CBS sports dot com as well. I'll have Utah state to cover. This is among my lowest. We have what thirty two games we're getting to hear this would be in the twenty eight to thirty two range in terms of confidence level of my of my cover pick. Yeah. I think it's a basically a coin flip situation. And that's why I'm going to take the points. You know, if you. This game to me these are two very comparable teams. So I'll just take Washington plus three hell I'll just take Washington to win the game. Get my cop-killer get his first in CW tournament win as a head coach. So. Yeah, Washington plus three Washington to win the game..

"So be sure let GP no. If he loses hundreds of thousands of people. Melia NHS of people how wild is it going to be of Kentucky shut its program. That's going to be very crazy. But you know, what we got to keep this thing moving here. So let's get to Oklahoma oldness twelve forty PM eastern on Friday. It's going to be in Columbia, South Carolina. Oklahoma's the nine seat. Oh, MRs the eight seed it's on TV and ole miss minus one. I have the least feel of this of all the eight nine games, I'm taking Oklahoma blindly. And I'll take them to cover in win. That is disrespectful to current Davis. After all he's done this season. If that's your that's your definition, literally being disrespectful to half the teams on this. In this respect accommodating. In the SEC in the tally. They are safely in the instantly tournament as an eight seed he allowed his players in the state of Mississippi to take a knee during the national anthem and supported them. And then you're going to pick against him in the first round of the NCAA tournament say Oklahoma wins and then Tila tournament game this year without trae young. When it couldn't do it with them last season. I'm taking ole miss to win the game. Ole miss minus one I have more respect for karma Davis than you do one thirty pm eastern on Friday. It's a west regional game in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It's going to be on TNT, Texas Tech is the three seed northern Kentucky as the fourteen c Texas Tech is minus fourteen. This is going to be the blow out of this TV window, Texas Tech. I like him to cover easily. And I say that knowing that northern Kentucky drooping, Donald's quality big step out and shoot. I think they're going to be shut down entirely. I don't think this has any drama. I think it's over basically by halftime. You remember down the stretch, Texas Tech with beat people's brains in? They went through like four five game stretch where they were beaten big twelve opponents by twenty five points, if you can do that you ought to be able to win a game like this by at least fourteen I'm in agreement with you. I think. I don't think it's going to be close. I think Texas Tech wins easily win the game. Also cover the fourteen at two o'clock eastern on Friday in San Jose, California. We gotta south regional game between UC Irvine thirteen seed, and Kansas state, the four seed Kei issue is minus five norlander and eater should win this purely because there are about fifteen too many schools have them wildcat moniker. So annoying. One an eater. Okay. So on creativity alone. UC Irvine deserves to win. This is the first thirty. I heard Bill this credits. Jay bilas. This is the first thirty win team out of the big west since UNLV in ninety ninety one. And I think they're gonna win. I had him winning before the news on dean week. He is not expected to play. I I don't know if he has been actually one hundred percent ruled out but Bruce Weber updated dean, weights condition, and it is doubtful at best. So keep that in mind as well. L, but I had Irvine win straight up regardless. I will stick with that are on the same page. I've got on winning the game straight up. So I've got him covering the plus five what Bruce said about deem. Wait is that he's unlikely to play in the incidentally tournament, and so I- interpret that to be like even if we made it to the final four he's unlikely to play he definitely ain't playing this week. And so I would assume I think you can safely assume that Kansas state is going to be without dean Wade, and they're just five and three this season without dean way, he is their second leading score. He's there leading rebounder and UC Irvine does a lot of things. Well, but one of the things they do. Well, his offensive rebound..

"But at least they're losses circuses too in five past seven games. But the losses are Duke North Carolina for Jinya at Clemson and Duke, again, you know, it's all I mean, basically, it's all they lost a bunch of one seats and Clinton glimpsing on the row. What are you gonna do? Right. Pretty think about like in the in the final one two three four one two three four five six final seven games before selection Sunday one to four of the seven words into one seat. That seems not fair. I agree. I'm not as concerned about Syracuse limping into this tournament as I am Baylor. Limiting the tournaments, and if you tell me, I only got a late two and a half points. I'll just lay the two and a half points. So we are in agreement there, and that that concludes Thursday schedule and this podcast. Takeaway, let's pick up this pace. You know, what slap the four GP? Let's rip it up. Let's let's pick up the pacer. We're gonna wake up on Friday and our first game's going to tip at twelve fifteen pm eastern. It is going to south regional game. It's in Columbus, Ohio. It's on CBS. It's America's most watched network network stars. Cincinnati's the seven seed, Iowa is the tin seats. Cincinnati minus three and a half. This is that other seven ten game. I loot to seems like everyone is on Cincinnati and Cincinnati is coming off in American athletic conference tournament championship. I will has been slipping in a major way I can shoot it though. Now, they're they're crazy inconsistent there maddeningly inconsistent good size. Download the game is close to Cincinnati. I'm taking so I'm taking cincy. Natty to win. But because I don't trust them momentum behind Cincinnati. I'm actually I'm going to take to cover the three and a half year. Ooh, no way. Man. I'm laying my points when Mick Cronin. Then Bearcats just went into FedEx woman ran Houston off the court. Now, they only got three and a half against the Iowa team that one in five and it's past six games. You're on the wrong side, sir. Okay. So you take in Iowa, plus the three and a half actually typing these into the computer keep track of it that way if I win I'll know and if I lose I can just delete it. And guess what? There are literally thousands of people listening to this podcast a couple of whom I'm guessing we'll keep track..

"The CBS sports app app on your phone, you can bring it up there. You can read all of our stuff there. And it is a thing. I do every single year. It's just stats nuggets trends to keep an eye on as we head into the tournament. If you're the kind of person that loves us in this podcast and wants to stuff your brain with a bunch of numbers and thinking might have an impact on your bracket. Please go read it. I think you'll enjoy what I have. And they're amongst like, I don't know eighty things is the fact that New Mexico state. It is a turnament staple practically it's not in the tournament every year. Although it feels like it and yet. NS you GP. Twelve straight times. It's been the turnament. It's lost has the longest ongoing losing streak. I think it ends. I am taking New Mexico state store. Eight up. Okay. Okay. I'm gonna take them straight up and for lob it right back onto you here. I don't know how much this will or won't truly impact things but offered just got done Sunday. We talked to Bruce Pearl and CBS sports H Q, and he was amped, but his his throat is voice was gone. This is ten thirty eleven thirty local tip gotta play early in that first window, their New Mexico state has a more more of days rest, and and it doesn't have to travel as far who knows what makes difference great rebounding team, by the way, New Mexico state of Auburn doesn't make us threes. That's why I think it's got a real shot. I will take the aggies. I'm gonna go Auburn both to win the game. No, I'm gonna have all been winning the game. But I do have New Mexico state plus the five and a half. Christians is really good, man. Really good. I mean, obviously what he did it at bowling. Green was you know, he want to get the record. Exactly, right. But he was he was great there. He was bowling green. Goes there in year one and goes twenty one in twelve like really doesn't nice job and then gets fired you can Google it. If you want to goes back to Wichita state where he previously was an assistant coach and then gets the New Mexico state job twenty eight and six wack regular season title last season wins the conference tournament goes to the instable attorney. And now here he is again thirty and four fifteen in one in the league another first place finish in the wacked. Regular season goes to the whack tournament wins it in the turn amount for the second straight year. So two years at New Mexico state to insead tournament appearances. I give them a chance to win this game. But I'm gonna take Auburn to win at New Mexico state plus a five and a half the next game that's going to tip on Thursday, two o'clock eastern on TBS far to state, which is the four seed in the w-. West against Vermont, which is the thirteenth seed in the west game's going to be played in Hartford far to state is minus nine who. Do you take to win the game? You take to cover the number gonna make that pick and just a minute. Just to quickies one this first window is awesome. And the second window on Thursdays. Awesome of seal have eight total windows, the first two days Thursday after lunch.

"That are breaking into the sport these days the way you break into the sport is if you've got connections to players if you are a grassroots guy or a high school guy with connections or you're just a player gator. Guys, who are just basketball coaches. There's there's fewer and fewer of them getting into college basketball. I don't know that that's a great thing for college basketball. But but frame was an example of that he got into this for no other reason than. You know, he he liked building teams developing players and coaching the sport. And and the sport really is a little less without him. It is and he will be replaced by Aaron mckie that moves now last year. So he takes over there. And we'll see what temple can become in the years to come. But but definitely shafts to him. And I think you it would not surprise me, by the way, if in the next three to four days, or whatever, I don't know if this stuff will be, you know, be caught on, you know, the news highlight shows, and whatever, but for reporters who are at the post game press conferences, I would be surprised if we did not hear multiple coaches, at least mentioned Fran Dunphy in passing just as, you know, whether after a winner a loss, and just, you know, share a story or give a shout to him because he is extremely respected. Their number coaches who are obviously extremely expected. But this game particular was a match of two of the most likeable coaches, and obviously elder statesman. Recber did remind that friend is is older than he is in joking manner. He is correct in that. But but absolutely did Rick. Thank you for the eye on college basketball podcast bringing him his best player. He did not. He did not. We didn't. We haven't gotten to that part. Let's see. Let's see if Dylan win Lehrer can do some damage against the Maryland Terrapins, I and if that winds up being the case, I think we might need to listen. We don't do coaching interviews on this podcast because frankly, we understand that unless you're fan of a certain school, and that coach other most people aren't gonna be interested. But you know, what I might not give it damn if it's Recber brick bird gets the Sweet Sixteen. Well, you know, what maybe we do a podcast eventually one day. It's you it's me. It's Rick bird instead downing I think that's podcast magic right than we could. We could make that we could make that work. I'd be I'd be down to do that for. Sure. All right. So what we're gonna do on this episode? I think is pick every NCAA tournament game. That's going to be played on Thursday and Friday. That is already set obviously Duke is still waiting on an opponent. Buffalo is still waiting an opponent. But we're gonna go through all the other round of sixty four games. And we're going to do that momentarily starting when soda Louisville..

"There. It's scary parachutes Monday, March eighteenth two thousand nineteen welcome back to the eye on college basketball podcast, sometimes discuss Campbell fighting an leaky black Matt norlander is here with me and currently twelve twenty one eastern late on what was selection Sunday the bracket has out. So let's dive right in Orlando. I some general thoughts on the bracket. I got two questions for you one. Did the selection committee get the number one seeds correct to did the selection committee get the right sixty eight schools, they got the one seeds. Correct. I have no issue with at Michigan state has an interesting case. It's the two seed in the east weirdly, it's the two seed in the east and would face the number one overall seed in Duke, there is no true curve and civilize selection committee long ago got rid of that practice. You wonder why maybe Michigan state in Michigan couldn't have been flipped? I have not listen it's been a tremendous. Fund Sunday night here, but you did CBS sports network. I did CBS sports HQ hope that our listeners can watch CBS sports, Hugh alter the week because we're gonna give you picks continuously. If you love the podcast, please seek us out on CBS sports HQ, we will be with you early and often the point I'm making here, though, is I have not looked at the bracket in terms of the like, okay. Was there a reason why they didn't send Michigan state to the west, and they didn't send Michigan to the east that was a little bit weird to me. But the ones I have no issue whatsoever. This is a lot of listeners realize only the second time ever one conference has had three teams on the one line the big east. Did it a decade ago with Pittsburgh Yukon in Louisville? So I don't have a problem. They're asked for today. Get sixty eight right teams in the field. I don't have an issue with it. I'm glad we got at least one mid major. You like me thought Belmont was the most likely of the mid majors. They had the fewest losses. They had the best quad one and quad to record. They did not have the best net net. Ranking. They didn't have the best strength schedule. And as we detail on previous podcast interesting cases for the other ones. Belmont. I thought was the sturdiest of them all they get in at the expense of TCU NC state and some others. I thought it was right? I was not right. So I thought temple and temples and they're gonna play Belmont..

"To the eye on college basketball podcast. Matt norlander issue with him once again and nothing happened. Since last time, we talked said this Windies podcast. It was true. Then I'm saying again on this podcast. It's true again. Now bottom line this is by far the worst week of the college basketball season. The only ranked team that's played a game. So far this week is Houston and that was last Sunday against Coppin states. Whatever Christmas is great for the kids. Great in general. I enjoyed the day with my family, but putting Christmas on a Tuesday really does screw up an entire week of college basketball evidence being that this is the only week of the entire season in which one ranked team will not play another ranked team Norrland or how border you at this week. You know, what I embrace it because I've gotten to it's boring. There's no doubt about it. But I know we're turning into a pretty active January here, and that'll be awesome. But I've had a chance to catch up with. With a lot of albums do a little bit of reading. And so I welcome the reprieve while even squeezing in three week college basketball podcast to the listeners who frankly, I I don't want to be too presumptive here. But I hope we are. We are filling your week up with with some college hoops content that you're craving amid a lot of non stuff happening on the court. So I've actually I've enjoyed the fact that there hasn't been so much hoops action. And I'm excited to chat about the interesting games. We've got coming this weekend. And yes in a little bit the much awaited highly anticipated at least only on my end year in review is coming on this podcast. It is true. That this is where you can catch up like I've done multiple expense reports. I've thrilling. Yeah. I cleaned out. The garage you do because I'm home, and there aren't any real relevant games happening. You do have time to actually like act like a normal person. So I guess that's the good side. But I am ready to give back the relevant college. Football games, and we will do. So how about this for transition Saturday at two pm eastern. The biggest game this week is number sixteen Kentucky against Louisville inside the center downtown Louisville Kentucky enters the nine and two record. Thanks to that big win over North Carolina in last week in CBS sports classic at the United Center Norrland, and I were both there. UK's two losses. So far this season. The thirty four point loss to Duke and the overtime lost Seton Hall and this game against Louisville. It will be a Kentucky's first true road game of the season. Meantime, Louisville nine and three overall eight no inside the Senate cards of beat. Michigan state. Also beat the same Seton Hall team that beat Kentucky Lula's losses on Tennessee on a neutral Marquette on a neutral at Indiana. So nothing bad on the resume Louisville's unranked now. But if the cardinals beat Kentucky, I'm certain they'll be top twenty five and one come Sunday morning. Like, I said tip is at two pm eastern on Saturday norlander, it's not the same as Calipari Patino Kentucky little game. But it's still pretty good. Right. Gaddis is pretty good..
