Suspiria (1976) - A Podcast Preview

"One thousand years reach draft bed, short exceed by threes for years that is bringing deaths and distraction event. The Neetu suspicious. Another signs mater Lacrima, the mother, tears, and may two tendon Bravo. The mother of darkness. Hello listeners now playing podcast, this Jacob, and I'm here to tell you about our fall donation series. Yes, it's fall the pumpkin spice in the air. It's also in our coffee and our pop tarts and are orios, and even our pumpkin pie. But fall ball means October. And that means Halloween. And that means we need to discuss some scary and spooky movies and were kicking that off right away with our silver level donation series that I'm here to talk to you about. We're calling this the three mother series, and they're all about the films of Italian master of for Dario are Gento kicking it off with the three mothers trilogy that includes suspicious and fern, oh, and the mother of tears. And then we're gonna. Throw in another film of his the nominal or creepers, and that's all gonna lead up to the remake of Spiro coming out later in November. I'll tell you more about the donations Aries, but first, here's a preview of the original nineteen. Seventy-six suspicious. Superior. Here we go. That's the first film in fern, oh, was made three years after spirit that's going to be the film we cover next week. And then it took a really long time twenty seven years later, our Gento came back and finally finish the trilogy with mother of tears. Each film is going to show us one of these ladies of sorrow and explained the complicated mythology about how they control the world. Okay. So now I know kind of what to look forward to and future weeks. I was really wondering if we're going to be watching a hell of a lot of ballet and just and this whole ballet school will not be included for the rest of the trilogy. Each place will be its own city, its own mother and its own kind of visual and audible qualities. Each one feels very different to me. I'm not going to get any more goblin just going. Over the soundtrack. I kinda love it. Yeah, I do think the reason why this one is so popular is because it style is so overwhelming. This one more than the other two just has a visual and audible quality. That is transporting whatever the story does to fail us. I think you can always hold onto the visuals and the music in this film. I've grown to love. I going to fully confess I found this film in childhood. I was not more than thirteen years old trying to learn about horror movies. I saw it and I felt betrayed all these people had told me this is one of the greatest horrible of all time, and I'm laughing. There's nothing scary about this movie, but here's the thing. It will seize your mind. I promise you even if you walk away and I predict many people will from this film saying, boy, that was stupid. You won't ever forget it and you'll want to see it again at some point in your life. There will be a hold on. In your mind? Yeah, I'll back you up on this because this is my second time seeing it. This was whether I recommend it or not. This was a better viewing experience. Knowing what I was getting into the first time. I was so confounded by what I was watching versus what my expectations word was watching talion slack or it kind of starts off that way. We'll get into it. But yes, seen it a second time, knowing what it is I was able to really focus on how the film is being told and not just what it's about. Can also attest to that. I watched it for this review and what I'm not ready to review this yet. Wash it again, why I have had the luxury of being able to come back to it over the decades. I've must have seen this now probably about six or seven times. Well, I have to ask, are you going to Chicago in November? We are recording this and releasing it a little early, but in November, starting actually in late October, goblin is touring the country and playing the score live to screenings of spirit. It's hitting Chicago, November eighteen. I would love to do that, but I'm not sure my schedule allows. I did have the opportunity to see goblin last year. They came through Chicago and I went up there. They had a Halloween show where they played some of their more esoteric rarer scores. And you know, they recorded albums that weren't connected to Dario or gentle movies. They played some of that stuff. But of course they did have to drag out the witch theme here and they did play with some of Dario visuals. It's amazing to see live. It is just as crazy. Some of that drumming is just unbelievea-. And oh my God. The score for this movie is a bit of an earworm interestingly enough, and I never put it together. Many times heard this song and they play it incessantly throughout this movie. I never realized until I was doing a deep dive for this review. And one of the critics that was analyzed in the movie said, the song the lullaby element is based on. Jesus loves me this. I know, and now I can not not here that I was like, really? Wow, okay. But there's a lot of hidden puzzles here. I think we can explore it all and I can't recommend highly enough the version. Arnie that you loan me by synapse just put out last year. They went back to the negative and got a four k. restoration man. It's a Lexington different film. I had never seen it looked so crisp and beautiful. Oh my God, the colors on this film, even though it's just a ten eighty p Blu Ray. I did watch it on a four k. screen and then I watched it the second time on a ten eighty p screen on the four k. h.. GR the colors popped so much. They were so vibrant. I'll say this just right off the top. It's evident from the very beginning. This movie has a visual style that is absolutely incredible. I never thought a shot of a cab driving down a road could be visually spectacular, but when you do it where you only see the headlights of the cab against the silhouettes of trees in a forest, yet this thing and it's color palette and its use of primary reds and blues and greens. You can't look away from it no matter what you think of the story. Yeah. When we get that shot of the cab going through that force and those trees, they almost seem artificial. They're just so straight, you think of trees, you know, kind of bending and all that. It's just something that pulls you in. You know, it doesn't really mean anything for the movie, the shot of forest, but it's just so visually studying it grabs my attention. Well, I think the intent was and this definitely came more from Nickelodeon than it came from our. Gento, but she really wanted to tell a fairy tale and fairy tales take place in the force German force specifically, this is the Black Forest. This is Germany. Is that why this is in Germany? Because again, I'm just it's an Italian film. Masumi gets an Italy, but then they're like, no, Suzy's go into Germany for dance school? Yes. Each movie will be taking place in a different country, Germany, we'll get into it, but I think that ultimately for our Gento he saw this as being a Stoorikhel rich place for which is. And I think he's also going to link Hitler and the Third Reich in with that cult, all the places that they were going to visit have a historical connection to Hitler and his rocks. Yeah, I thought it was very interesting that we have an Italian making a film about an American set in Germany, very international, and I do understand from behind the scenes. It was very confusing for the people on the set. Sometimes just Harper compared it to being in babble like she would just go around and she was no one else. Speaking English to her Dario just kind of mind what he wanted and you know, God knows the script evolved and changed over the course of the filming. It's just a haunting image. You really judge Susie. It's like, you know, you could stop and give her ride wherever you're going. Yes, Susie is very nonchalant, just kind of looking at her as she's this woman is running and like in tears, obviously freaking applet, like at least call the police. Have them check in honor. Yeah. Yeah. Whatever by problems with Susie will persist. But this past and I do think that when people talk about suspicious and if they're a fan of it, it's usually for this first eleven minutes. This opener is what's considered to be mainly the pinnacle of our does whole entire career. Oh, this is amazing. First of all, again, the architecture and the color of everything. She's walking into this apartment building just so vibrant red. And yeah, you mentioned I wasn't thinking it, but there's the staircases in the. Background? Yeah. Those staircases that are like pointing at each other. I'm like, who would do that? Doesn't make any sense? Yeah. And notice three is a big number here. It's big, India Colt. It's big in the Third Reich, it's big with the aluminum body. It's just a magic number. Yeah, with Christians. Yeah, it's a big number. Yeah. So you know, three floors and everything. Triangular panes of glass from this glass ceiling all of it. It's just so well thought out. You just want to soak it in. And I do think that that is again, what can carry so many people is just the pervasive beauty really of these surroundings. And what's going on the fact that you can't understand it made an add to their lower? Yeah. Again, I don't mind now. When I watched the first time I was confused now I watch and I just go with it and it's beautiful. And then you get this really brutal death like Pat is looking up a window and you see some cartoon is flash sadder, and then that hand bust through grabs her face and pushes. Through the pain of glass like that is some brutal stuff. The pushing through the glass didn't get me so much as the pushing into the glass. Now, the second time I'm watching it, I'm picturing 'cause the verse watching it, the actresses knows is so far bad and her lips are so far back. I'm like, wow, they're really hurting the second. I've watched it. I just envisioned in my own head, the director being like, okay, he's gonna put his hand on your hair and he's going to pretend to be holding you. You push in as far as you can without breaking your nose. She was probably doing that whole thing that ugly phase on the glass, but my God in with the music and the sound effects seeing that woman smushed against the glass is by far the single most impacting horrific visual of the movie. Yeah, it is peaks too soon. But what a grammar at that by the same turn, you're not going to turn this movie out. No matter what happens. Mother of Tears - A Podcast Preview

"One thousand years reach trapped was bed shorts exceed by threes for years that will deal is bringing deaths and distraction event. The neetu. Superior other signs mater Lacrima. The mother t. And may two tendon Bravo. The mother of darkness. Hello listeners now playing podcast. This is Jacob and I'm here to tell you about our fall donation series. Yes, it's fall the pumpkin spice in the air. It's also in our coffee and our pop tarts and are orios, and even our pumpkin pie. But fall ball means October. And that means Halloween. And that means we need to discuss some scary and spooky movies, and we're kicking that off right away with our silver level donation series that I'm here to talk to you about. We're calling this the three mother series, and they're all about the films of Italian master of for Dario are Gento kicking it off with the three mothers trilogy that includes suspicious and fern, oh, and the mother of tears. And then we're gonna. Throw in another film of his the nominal or creepers, and that's all gonna lead up to remake of spirit coming out later in November. I'll tell you more about the donations Aries, but first, here's a preview of the mother of tears. Wanna point out. The score is a goblin acolyte. This is the leave visionary, you know, they don't really have singers, but the guy most associate with goblin Claudio Symonette day did the demons score as well, at least the first film. And yeah, I feel like he saw the it sounds a whole lot like Jerry goal score in that film a lot of chanting choirs. I watched this movie early in the morning and when I came out my ninety eight year old grandmother had woken up and she goes, oh, that was very pretty music. You should play that every morning. I was watching a movie. Maybe I should just play for Choon a- and some gothic, classical music every morning. 'cause she was apparently grooving to the track. Yeah, although, every now and then it becomes like a nineties new wage like remember that group 'nigma like, yeah, it does become like what they get to those sexy scenes. It does have a different five to, but anyway, the plots if we must a, we start in the video cemetery where they're digging up the casket of a night accidentally. They were not purposely digging that casket from what I could tell these very surprised at there's a gasket as they're digging up a cemetery completely inept. I mean, the backhoe falls into it. I then they're like, oh my God. There's a call Pitt where they're nights in eighteen fifteen. I didn't think so. That seemed like a big really ended log, but we're going to get. Actually, this cartoon prologue explains g he was the only one that could carry this earn full of Domon. Artifacts to the basket. For some reason, they're going to take the pope of this thing, and then he died in this town of bitter row, and that's probably who's buried here and why they have these remains. It scares the Monsignor enough to contact the expert in the field at the museum of ancient art. Maybe I'm a different understanding would earn is I think that's what you put someone's ashes in. This is just a box full of artifacts that technically earn. Yeah, I would think that it would be more shaped like a vase if nothing else. Yeah, I thought it was going to be like, is this the cremated, which it's a box of statues and like an old pagan dress in it yet time capsule. Used to bury for grade school? Yeah, that's kind of what this is and they're completely fine with the body will bury it later, but the earn that we're going to seal with a candle in a very pain staking process to wax it shots and ship it off. I'm just grinning how contrived it's silly this is it shows up. And of course the expert Michael is not there so is just going to dive in and crack it. Open pricking her finger like we just know where this is going. This was the opening to the first alone of the door film wasn't. Oh, yeah, I definitely got this was alone in the dark. Three hit feels like one of those direct videos, but more fun. I wanted to say ova bowl finds a way of rehashing cliches in which they feel pain staking through here. I'm laughing a lot when this curator gets gutted essentially, and then choke with their own energy. That is a stroke of brilliance. I just wish this old are Gento. Shooting that would've looked great. I'm having a hard time seeing this on my DVD. It is so dark, but at least we got older Gento as far as we're just gonna have crazy stuff because there's like a monkey that shows up and it's howling I guess that's what this mother of tears use. The finder victims send the monkeys after them, but we've always had animal attacks. It was a bat and Spiro. It was a cat and a rat in cats rats, bats, I think of those with witches, not monkeys. Yeah. Well, we haven't gotten to phenomena yet, but there is a very member actually, Jennifer Connelly lost some of our finger to monkey onset. Yes, so we'll see some killer monkeys when we get to that film. It was kind of almost a three mothers movie. That's kind of awesome. I'm with Stuart. This is silly fun, and the copy I watched was bright enough. I definitely think Jake of you're telling me you probably got the DVD released stateside. Yes, I had the DVD. Yeah, they apparently gave it no love this French blue. Ray went through and tweaked everything because at no point did I go? I can't see that. Here's what I would say up to this point are generalists made probably a lot of bad films, but he was always treated as an artist because he painted with light because his films technically looked certain way and he cared so much about that presentation that you were always willing to call them an artist even when it was bad art. This ain't the work of an artist. This is no master of horror working here. This is hack of horror is what we got here, and so you're going to have to adjust to that. I just very well to that in part because I've never thought Dario agenda was a master of core. I think he was the guy that kind of bumbled through bed story lines and gave us memorable moments. Keep in mind some of those other masters of horror. I mean, again, we've got west craven Toby Hooper at believe. John carpenter was in there. Not all of them have immense visual style, Mick Garris. Stephen king's bitch. Yes. The Shiming TV movie. Master of or given that, I think it's okay. I'll admit this is not feel like an origin so film as I have come to stereotype them. This feels like the sequel that's made by some other director. You bring in Fred Dekker or somebody and say, here are gentiles producing. We've got this other person directing, that's just how it feels to me. But I'm not going to say that's the end of the world because I'm having fun with what's being done. But yet these three movies, if I were to watch them all in a row, none of them feel like the other stylistically where I'd think they were the same series. Oh, I feel like spirit inferno. Like that's the same director. This feels like something totally different to me, and some of that is time and some of that is the fact that our Gento had been working been edited. And then suddenly people were like, you can do whatever you want. And so he's going to hear. I mean, this opening kill tells me we're back to old are Gento. It's possibly because I've been watching some of his. Nineties movies, which are so dry and boring to see him really just go for it here with these. I don't know if they're witches or just like troll creatures. They ended up getting cut out of the climax. They were supposed to be their own thing, but these three monsters come and take this curator and put something in her mouth that breaks off our teeth and then the gutter. And I just love the fact that our intestines become a news. If you want to hear the rest of that review, you can head over to now plane podcasts dot com. Inferno - A Podcast Preview

"One thousand years, reach trapped bed shorts, exceed by threes for years. Is bringing death and destruction. The neetu. Superior other signs mater Lacrima. The mother teams. And made her tendon Bravo. The mother of darkness. Hello listeners now playing podcast. This is Jacob and I'm here to tell you about our fall donation series. Yes, it's fall the pumpkin spice in the air. It's also in our coffee and our pop tarts and our orios and even our pumpkin pie. Throw in another film of his nomination or creepers, and that's all gonna lead up to remake of spirit coming out later in November. I'll tell you more about the donations Aries, but first, here's a preview of inferno. No obvious how this connects fear other than I think structurally here at verse. If you remember the spirit started with some voiceover and female artist who's trying to find out about a haven of evil. That's kind of what we get in this opening here tip. It doesn't have that crescendo build up that spirit opening, you know, that built to an amazing kill. Some would say peak and its I eleven minutes. I did say that here we're just going to get a data dome. We're finally going to understand who the three mothers are and what the keys to finding them off own the differences here because I think they hit a lot of the same beats a spirit. There's a lot of walking around building and weird stuff happening, but that was a problem with Suzy ban like why she the one that which is going after at least with rose here. Yes, she starts off with his three mother's book and it's that old four trope like you messed with evil. You read the Latin saying and a demon comes alive, whatever. So I can appreciate lease there. Some attempt to explain why this evil is happening now to someone went searching for it. I have a couple real problems with his opening. I do think it tells me how relates to suspicious in that right here. In the beginning, it's going to tell us about the different cities and that one of them was Freberg Germany. So that lets me know, hey, that was one of the three. She's in New York. That's a second one, but holy shit. What a data dump at the beginning. If this was something I was watching NFC eter or just even watching fun. This is the kind of text that would wash over me. I would try to keep up, but it goes so quick and is bringing up so many proper nouns and mater suspicious horrib- mater Lacrima room and made her ten broom. It's impossible to follow first time your viewing it. I pause the movie, watched it a second time. Pause the movie went online transcript at. I spent probably ten minutes studying this because I'm like, this is shit we're going to need to talk about, and there is no way you can get this except repeated viewings of the movie and studying of the movie. And I just wanna say they're already changing things and Fuxing identities. I mean now suddenly the mother of size is called the mother of sorrow, and she's the oldest when she was the middle child last time. I don't think our Gento cares about mythology and facts and strong timelines. I think it shows all of his work not just in this Chile that he has obsessions and they tend to be visual and auditory. And so that's kind of where I've meet him. I'll forgive him all of his ridiculous plots if he can cast this fell with his magic, my problem for the opening of this movie and really this entire movie is it's very hard for me to concentrate on who the main character should be. I mean, I know who just Harper is when. He gets out of that airplane walks the airport. I know she's going to be the star of the film here with rose. FOX said, you need a star cast, Irene Nira coll-. I think it's a miracle if you know who she is, I actually have Steiner and other work specifically in the late eighties, early nineties. I saw both puppet master and watchers too. I looked up every name. I needed a witch Italian names I needed to even pronounce or what names were worth bringing up. I figured our listenership would no puppet master. So Irene miracle. She got name dropped in this plot summary, the do a real psycho thing here. We're going to spend a lot of time with rose at the beginning and they got away to another character who dies and the Miro's is gonna go away. I thought she's going to be our Suzy banyan the film. But no, she's only here for a little bit and maybe that wasn't calculation. Maybe that's meant to be a big surprise. We think we know what we're getting, and then they're going to take that away from the middle. But honestly, this movie feels like a lot of random bland characters that it's. To get a beat on that. Sometimes alike that I'm like, oh, I think it's her and it. No, it's actually one in Italy. Oh, I just get very confused. And I think this movie sorely needs a star appeal. I do know that they tried very hard for the male lead to get James woods, which would help. Yeah. Despite the fact that I've seen just one of the guys and not mccloskey's face from there, he is not very recognizable. He's not somebody you can click with us at the cost three million dollars and was an American back production. I thought that thing was despite being set in New York. Maybe this was filmed overseas or maybe it was low budget, but this is not have the feel of an early eighties American picture. Yeah, you're seeing are Gento stuck in New York. Looking out the window. I don't feel like this New York Film. I don't even think that building is really, they're very much. Looks like a set of backstage. I mean, we'll get one other shot of New York. I think some kind of lake with a hotdog stand. It doesn't feel like a New York Film at barely is. They filmed in New York for one week, they shot for fourteen weeks. All the rest of it was on a Rome sound stage and it does. It feels European. It's absolutely incidentally fun little fact that one week he was in New York working for him was William Lustick who is the director of maniac. And that's how that movie got funded. He came up to Dario and said, I'm a big fan. I know all of this and shut all this. Trivia Dario was like this kid. Let me see what you wanna do us. Joe spinal maniac was board who would have thought that if our Geno couldn't get into theaters, he actually could get maniac there. Yeah, that feels New York. No part of me ever Westchester and that was a New York picture this. It feels very stilted, and I'll say the same thing about the spirit. It's just doesn't ever feel naturalistic. And that's something that I often equate with or films, especially foreign horror films, right? But be that as it may here, we are supposedly in a New York apartment building that can't be. What kind of world is this? A building in Manhattan. It's beautiful that may can't fill. You see her furnishing. This thing's a furnished apartment. There's no way she bought all that. Yeah, how even affording this? She's a poet guessing either it's university apartment or it's not in the Manhattan borough. Maybe she's on Staten Island. Yeah, way back in Staten Island by the don't. She's does say it smells. Yeah, let's get to that. What we learn here, aside from what we may have already known coming in as the spirit of fans is that they have tells they have poisonous, secret identity tells that are referred to as keys. The primary key is that they stink. Basically, you build a house where I'm and the ground rots. And before you know it, everything reeks, horribly. And I love the fact that this chicks going to go next door goes, why does it stink over here? And he's like the cake factory. What kind of cakes they making that steak. You know, I lived in Decatur Illinois. I know what a stink smells like because there's a soit plant there, and, oh my God, the smell. Maybe there's a witch indicator, maybe it's not actually the soy because that city what I went there for college literally made me nauseated for a while if you're a bakery and you're producing that kind of waft you're not gonna get customer. She said it was like bitter sweet smell. I don't know that a witch would smell bitter. Sweet. I would expect more. Or leg Stang eight day Hobo. We're gonna find out that this which is like literally the grim reaper, so smell like death. And so maybe the cake is their front, like put ice. Cover our anyway. The second thing is what she's gonna follow up one. If you go into the cellar of a witch house, you're going to find their picture and their name somewhere buried under that floor. And so she decides, hey, look at this. It's a random doorway into the seller. I'm just going to walk down and see what I find.
