Ed lindell us and not just in moody Talking about all the good stuff going down in scottsdale arizona Probably not outside of scottsdale. Tempe timmy tempe. I dunno i knew are now tempe arizona. Be so yeah. She's got a lot of good stuff going She had a lot of it was funny. We talked a little bit about. She's she's done both startup practices and buying an existing practice and so had moody. So i kinda had them talking about the pros and cons. It was good. It was excellent stuff. She would do a startup she. Her thought was startup because she likes doing all the system. She likes doing all that stuff. I man. Startups seem like such. The grass is always greener right. Like i always think to myself. I bought this practice. And in. I have all his bad habits and mistakes that i have to deal with and stuff and if i had my own practice if i started a start up i'd be able to from my mistakes and then there's the thing that's like. Yeah but you're still you and you're still lazy as hell when it comes right down to it and as much as you'd like to think that you'd put all things in place that you want to. You probably fall back into what you always do. I'm inspirational. i'm like the anti mark costas. You know that i really am. It's a solid thought. It is. I don't think i could probably market the anti mark kostas as well as mark kostas markets. The marcoses floro bizarre bizarro. Mark costas. I am where he's lean and in in ropy i'm lumpy and where he's ten. I'm pale in doe where you're meaning rupee sa- i mean i mean like i am. I'm the bizarro mark cost. We figure this out. I think. I think think we need to do that. Gag the world needs both of you. If they didn't have me the bizarro they see how glorious the regular is. You know what. I'm saying if you weren't there then. Mark would rule out of control. Exactly there's there's a balance in the universe. It's like an exercise of contrast you can't have the yen without the gang. See them saying. I feel like i feel like we're onto something to judge the record. Alan meade is the bizarro mark. Kostas guess what. My teeth were not mushed up in a baseball accident. Just a yeah you sleep. That happened if that happened for stuff. I am play baseball for how old. I'm forty nine. I probably i played baseball for forty nine years. I played a little bit of softball. When i was a child. But i'm played baseball. So that's that the child doesn't seem probable only adult in a real faith we had a softball league. We had a softball league for for kids. The wildcats off all league. Not kidding my dad was a coach there. So i played. It's true. it was actually is better than softball. It was mushball. Mush is nelga softball. But it's all soft to actually soft because softball not actually soft. You take off on the face and it's gonna creamy like mark costa's style this getting confusing. I know i am. I'm i've had way too much. Caffeine is what it is a parking driveway. "Have to do even more exams. And according to Mark Costas after a certain amount of periodic exams per month your you have diminishing law of return used. You have less Less case acceptance because you are rushing to get from patient to patient to patient and you no longer have that ability to sit down to thoroughly go over troop plants and And what that patient wants I emotional dentistry? And that's the most. That's the stuff that I WANNA do. I WANNA do emotional dentistry. I don't WanNa do costumes all day. So so that is the only reason why. I haven't put it out that I need another hygienist Currently like like so Judy Judy. I'm sure it'll be listening to this. I told you the all the time like Judy. It's going to be easier for me to find another hygienic to train. And that way we can start getting these new patients in because we're pushing them out for months and everyone knows it's like a cardinal said you're supposed to get new patients in preferably within two days when they think about going to the dentist you should be able to get them in No more than a week and we're pushing them out yes I think march is the next high teen availability so I have a hygienist. Who is tempting for us in January for one day? A week Just to help get those patients. So they're basically including my my schedule with new patient exams but there's no openings in hygienes for their profiles and I don't know about you but I don't think patients like coming back twice to get an exam and the prophecy but also on the flip side of things. I also know that patients don't necessarily want to spend two two and a half hours at the dentist so we're still very much learning. What our low like. Sweet spot is And they told Judy about like okay. Let's let's start looking. Let's are looking for like a full time high China's and she. She put her foot down. She doesn't know don't want you to do that. Because you're already stressed out about running from opportunity to opportunity and you are basically losing the culture that I had set out to build and what Judy means by that is when I first opened I wanted to be a very personalized experience. Like the four seasons. And now we're GONNA talk about service. My whole thing was to meet every patient in my console room before they're brought back into the opportunity like I wanna get to know them face to face at the table where they told me about what happened at their last last hour. Experience what they are looking for in a provider what what makes them smile. What they want for their smile like those are the things up that I love to have conversations about not while a patient is sitting in my chair but just sitting at the table friends having a casual conversation and I haven't been able to do that and a year. Yeah I haven't been able to do that in a year so judy. Since Judy knows knows what I want and she knows a culture because she's been there since day one she basically said we're not we're not sacrificing. We're not we're not just trying to get patients in anymore. Like let's take a few steps back and figure out how to build exactly what we set out to the beginning. So thank you. Judy for always reminding me what my what. My North Star is In my North Star has always been service service above all else So the conversations. Judy and I are are going to be meeting at my House. Allen Monday to go over certain things about the team and we we have a big kickoff. Meeting is what we're calling it with the team members On Friday and Saturday of next week I'm going over lots of goal setting like not just professionally but personally and just keeping each other accountable to achieve those goals because this is the start of a new decade and it really is now that now that we're not desperate for patients that our our practice is booming like we we can take this opportunity to really hone in on on what exactly we want. And and for me that means dropping insurances honestly dropping insurances. I don't need fifty new patients a month. I don't need sixty nine patients a month..

"The dental for newer podcast. Okay doctor it's time to put down that hand piece you're listening to the show dedicated to helping dentists Get their lives back. It's time to decrease your stress increase your profitability and regain your passion now introducing your host Dr Mark Costas how you doing out there today awesome quick tactical exercise today with a team cultural assessment one of the biggest questions that we get is if you inherit a practice or acquire a practice that has a broken culture if you've been in practice for years that has developed into a terrible toxic culture how do you fix it and really if you're not sure if you have a good culture or not how do you determine where you are how do you establish that exception all cultural level and how do you baseline that to know exactly where you are so we developed this simple work she called the team cultural assessment and it has to do with the core value so let's talk through this team cultural assessment form very very simple if you can imagine read that says on top of it says team member so you're filling out each one of these for each of your team members so you can assess whether or not they are a cultural fit for your eliminate for the betterment of the entire organism. I always say if you have a cancer within your office and you are procrastinating rid of them and you've tried to work with them and they still consistently rubbed the patients or anybody on your team the wrong way and they just aren't living up to your expectations culturally the longer you keep them on board the more disruption they're going to cause the overall organism and your goal as a leader as the owner of your practice is to make sure that that organism survives for for the good of your family for the good of you and for the good of everybody else on the team because they too are supporting themselves and their family based on this organism so one single person or even a handful of people are not worth keeping around because you're unwilling to have that difficult conversation you're unwilling to make that difficult decision you're you're disciplined about how healthy you're going to keep this organism so.

Okay doctor it's time to put down that hand piece you're listening to the show dedicated to helping dentists get their lives back it's time to decrease your stress increase your breath ability and regain your passion now introducing your host. Dr Mark Costas you guys have all heard my story about Oh you know how I after the first seven years of dental career had finally reached my the financial goals that I had set arbitrarily when I was sixteen years old checked off those financial goals and it was at that time that I realized that I was not happy I'd never been more miserable in my life my personal relationships were falling apart my health was tyring I wasn't spending enough time cultivating gratitude in my life and that was all because I was hyper focused on one quadrant in my life so we drafted this this concept of the future is to make sure that the members of our mastermind were variances the same thing you know one of my superpowers is being able to learn from my mistakes learn from my bad decisions and being able to pass on those lessons to to other people and you know if I if I was to pass on any lesson about business and about being an entrepreneur her and being a super type A. truly successful person that would be to focus first on all of the other three quadrants of your four futures and then the actual financial stuff almost always falls into place and it's much more easy to to accomplish your financial goals and remained fulfilled if you focus on the other foot three quadrants. I and that is a mindfulness gratitude approach an approach for cultivating the relationships in your life the family relationships your friendships the relationships you have with the people that you spend the most time with a lot of times that is hard dental teams with our children with our parents so important to be able to to really focus cultivate those relationships and then of course the muscle quadrant which is movement longevity how we how we fuel our vessels the amount of sleep that we get the amount of exercise that we're getting if you focus on and you've really master those three quadrants I the financial stuff honestly it it's a lot easier to accomplish your.

"Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of the dental podcast. I'm your host Dr Mark Costas this one we dug up from the archives but it's got some really great tactical L. Nuggets and great content in it. It is from Austin Texas at a private client event five years ago and you know I mentioned the age of my kids and I say I have three boys ten seven and five and now they're fifteen thirteen and and ten which is crazy so <hes> so yeah. This is <hes> we had a dust this one off off but really really cool content we talk about the law of polarity which I haven't talked about for years but it's still really really pertinent <hes> so oh listen up for that concept and you know the definition and how you can apply it to your life. We also talk about <hes> the resources necessary to accomplishing everything that you want and the fact that most times any limitations that we have are like within our own <unk> own minds within our own brains self taught self created limitations but I go deep into that we also talk about the power of asking asking the right questions and if you're stuck how changing the types of questions that you're asking yourself can get you on stock so I think you guys are GonNa Enjoy this episode. Let me know what you think. Make sure is that you're going to the dental. Success Institute closed facebook group. You can ask questions to the over six thousand people that we have that are active in that community. That are really really smart listeners this podcast. If you have a topic that you want to cover on the podcast. That's the best place to to <hes> Thing that you want to share about something that's coming up. That's the best place to share. It also make sure that we're going to dental success T._v.. There's a lot OUGHTA gray content and Dental Success T._v...

"Podcast. I'm your host Dr Mark Costas Today Day. We have a mash up. You guys are going to get introduced to our new content curator. His name is Joanna and Jona is going to be doing a mash up. This episode specifically is a bunch of really cool clips or I speak talk about leadership so I hope you guys enjoy this. This is from many different live events over the years and the topic is leadership. Welcome Jona our new content curator he guys welcome back into the show and another mash up episode this one being all about leadership has injury regardless of the quality and thoroughness of the tools that I give you know improvement or progress or change will occur unless the owner of the practice will commit to just one thing this is one thing that a lot of these types of seminars gloss over because we're trying to make you guys happy and your Taipei and your analytical and your left brain and you want tactics and strategies and systems and tangible stuff to walk away with in a book bacteria office to get going. That's how we think or scientists but you must become ineffective leader because I talk about out this every time I get up on stage. But how many times have you guys left a seminar fired up and ready to get it done. You Assemble the team. You say okay guys here we go. We're GONNA roll this new system out. They roll their eyes because you do this every time he leave town and they whisper to each other. That's okay he'll forget about this in two weeks. What happens is we don't remain ineffective leader? We don't maintain that momentum to keep that new system going and that all comes down to leadership. I was the worst leader in the world when I had those six practices and I'm GonNa talk more about that that stuff but holy cow. I was a terrible leader. I didn't know the names of half of the fifty people that worked for me and I'd roll until the office and I'd Huffman puffed because things were out of place and things looked inefficient and I just I just wanted things a certain way away. I was not an effective leader and if you're not ineffective leader you're going to get a very low level of performance from your people by definition so ineffective leader has. Has the systems and processes to give the entire team their best but the entire but the opportunity to be successful is just the first part of the equation in addition to furnishing the environment for success effective leaders must have the right people in the ripe positions hold each member.

I'm in a brand new podcast with my good friend Kay dog herself cure ident. She is traveling implementer here here at the Dental Success Institute and she travels every single week to dental practices and she makes them exceptional. She makes them elite level. She works on everything from communication to systematisation to case acceptance acceptance and treatment planning to handling incoming phone calls to route slips two transitions. She is a master at going into practices and turning them around and from my perspective I see things from the dental. That'll C._E._O.'s perspective. I look at things from a little bit different lance and the two of us together get on this podcast. Sometimes we'll be interviewing people from the road while she's actually there in the dental practices. Sometimes we'll just be reflecting being on what we've learned over the years in this game of practice management and really being able to look behind the curtain of different dental practices so two different points of view hers from Dental Team Members Perspective and mine from a dental practice owner slash. C._E._O.'s perspective and I don't think anybody's doing this at all right now out there in the podcast world so we wanted to bring this to you so make sure you guys go to the dental eighteen podcast on itunes wins or stitcher or wherever it is that you consume your podcasts download it become a subscriber and if you like it make sure you give us a review our guys will catch you at the dental eighteen podcast on itunes or or wherever it is you're listening to your podcasts and that wraps it up for another episode of the Dental podcast. "I think those have so many good tips. In like I said, you are willing to go out in contact some of these people that are on there that are at the forefront. I mean, not talked with Brady, Frank ad nauseam, because he just had so much knowledge about business, and I just picked his brain. So I think if you can get in contact with some of these doctors who are truly, you know, at the top of the business game where you wanna be if you see someone doing what you wanna do contact. That's why contacted you contacted Mark Costas. My goal is to, to learn as much as I can from people like you and all those people that are doing the business side. Yeah. And you know what all those people these podcasts. There are a lot of work. I mean, if a how wanna work and, and it's free and it's all in the service. I mean that shows you what kind of profession you are, where all these people are working really hard to get faster. Easier information for. For free, and it's really a cool profession. And the part of the networking thing is so important, a lot of dentists and, or just like, physicists, and chemists. They're shy introverted people. And in a social, I mean we live in a social heard of eight billion humans living on about five percent of the surface of this planet, seven percents water and man, it's not just what you know, it's who you know. And, and that kid Dennis all time and I'm pointing across street to dental cross street. And I said, how long have you parks guy? Seven years less. I'm you've had dinner them. Never. It's are you are you an alien both dentists. I mean I mean so, so do you think it's this come from your sports, your family? We're where did you get to have the? Just the foresight, and the energy do coal Brady Frank. I mean mostly will your class and you just told me had to call Brady Frank. They probably be stressed having Zaidi run. Talk about the importance of networking. I think networking is huge..

"Welcome to another episode of the dental podcast. I'm your host, Dr Mark Costas, and I'm just chilling here at the university of Nevada Las Vegas. With the business club called. The business club doing tonight. All right. So we just got done filling their brains with lots of I think good information. But I know you guys have some questions. So I'm gonna take questions for the next ten fifteen minutes for I let you guys go. So does anybody have anything? Good to ask. Yes, ma'am, your name. And at what what gradient or what grade you in. What what? I don't know what he say. What year my name is aleisha Namibia's too. And my question is since I know you're from California as well. And LA Hoya sounds great. How do I find a place that I want to live and practice in? That's not going to be the Loa 'cause you're in Arizona rate. Yes, I'm in Arizona. And I love Arizona. But I am I'm a beach kid. So I do miss it. So, you know, I get to the ocean as much as I can what I would do is. I would I would look into some resources that are good at studying demographics. Demographics dot com is a great one also lots of different resources out there. So if you pick a region, you can say, hey, look, I wanna live somewhere in the south west or I wanna live in California somewhere, can you? Find me a soft spot where there is actually favorable demographics and a good demographic company will actually be able to find that area for you. Then you go out and visit you see if you have if you're feeling it. And if you are you can look to see if there's you know areas where you could. A startup if that's what you're interested in doing or you can acquire practices. Well, K. It's it's that's the best way to go. Do the demographic research first, and then go and fall in love with the place don't decide that you have to live in this particular area. And you know, you you just have to be flexible, you could still live in a great place. There's still lots of pockets here, and there in very very desirable places. So that's how I would handle it that cycle. Everybody else. Max Muth second year as well. So after you educating us a little bit more on startup versus acquisition if you did want to do the acquisition route. But you go in find practices that are, you know, at this sixty eight to seventy two percent, you know, making all these mistakes and stuff like that. Would it be a smarter route to just bite the bullet and do the startup or go with an acquisition of a practice somewhat failing? And then just try to you know, turn it around which your suggestion on that..

"Com. Still time to get some tickets, the hotel rooms might be sold out. But not too late to pick up a ticket to the voices of dentistry hope to see you there. So here's my episode with Paul he specifically asks me a lot of questions about multiple practice ownership when I think it's a great time to graduate from a single practice to going into multiples and. He asks a lot about my challenges. And you know, when I finally did reach that threshold of six practices in the first seven years. What was it that led to the challenges that I faced at that level? When you actually start assembling your executive team, your cease, wheat and other such great topics. He's a great interviewer very, very conversational. The audio on my end is a little funky. But you can definitely hear what I'm saying. So hopefully, guys enjoy the Sepah sewed, and we'll talk to you very soon. Enjoy Dr Mark Costas, Dr Paul etchison on the dental practice heroes podcast. So today, I got the one the only Marcus on the podcast, man. "What we'll we'll play it by ear and see we may pull Allen up for one Allen. Jason is there kinda host. Maybe we'll just a moody up for one. That's right. It may we pull Mark Costas upper one who've I've never I don't think I've ever met in for Mark sand once at the first first one. Yeah. When I was there for all of. Ten minutes before ten minutes after they're pretty much. Yeah. That was that was crazy down planning on being there. A little bit longer for this one. Yeah. But I'm hoping I'm hoping we can we can equal that it. The live shows are fun. I'd like to do more of those because I mean to actually get to get together. That's the only time we've ever tasted show right next to each other. That's right. That's right. So that was fun. I think one of the weirdest experiences for me. This year has been finding out that there's some non dentist who was to the show. Yes. Remember, I got that one question from a non dentist about the oral surgeon shape sugar. Danny that was a good one. If that's right. She emailed us. And that's when we're like, wait a minute. We actually the non dentist grew segment of listenership. Crazy abs- still crazy to this day. Still kind of blows my mind still crazy. Yeah. You're in your daughter has some friends that listen to show that are not dentist. Yeah. Weird really weird. Anything else? Any other memories? Anything good that you want to go like on anything bad. You went to harp on. No, it's it's just all been good. I mean, it's it's been a I don't think I originally thought this was going to be a weekly when we first started going, but have had so much fun with it. But I kept like, hey, you wanna record? And then it with came once. Yeah. I don't think we ever had any idea that this many stupid questions? At there's plenty man. We could do this like if we weren't working fulltime we could we could do more than one episode a week. I think oh easily. Yeah. It's it's it's it's there's. On on the Facebook groups, and it's real easy to have some material between that and read it it, really. Is. It really is. Yeah. Pretty darn easy. You know, we haven't even we've kind of stayed out of all the I've tried to not bring in the crazy demanding hygienists threads and stuff like that. Seems row. Controversial ones. We've really stayed out of those and still had lent freaking material for. Hours and hours. I mean, fifty two hours of material basically, right at this point. So yeah, it's just it's it's crazy. It's crazy that this thing has done. Well, it's crazy that people still listen, I don't know. It's it's just you know, we hope that we've set ourselves apart in differentiated are saying enough that I had hoped in. I think we've achieved something different. I mean, I was looking at the list of the voices of dentistry and all the different podcasts them most of them. I've never heard of it. But when I started kind of looking at a lot of similarities and here with us if you learn anything, it's totally by accident. Yeah. That's not what we're here to do. And we don't want anybody who comes here expecting to learn stuff..

"It before we get to my interview with Dr Mark Costas, we have another. Let's ask David segment. And of course, David is Dr David hornbeck, my longtime friend, Dr David hornbeck in this particular, less -at's, David question, a listener Senate a question about how David could provide tips to reduce the incident of remakes in his practice. I think an enjoy David's wisdom about how to reduce remakes in your practice. We all know that remakes are to be avoided if we possibly can and David heads of amazing tips for you. Here's that let's ask David segment. Doctor hornbook some true confessions here, I'm experiencing a higher level of remakes that I'd like him I practice from the lab I'd like to reduce that for my benefit and also for the lab sake. Can you share some tips? Oh, help me. Reduce remix. Yeah. Absolutely. First thing, and, you know, this Gary is the most expensive thing you do in your offices remake because let's say you got a thousand dollars for a crown and it costs you a hundred and fifty dollars for lab and your overhead was two hundred and fifty dollars an hour and the referrals were fifty dollars being the impression temporary material in your profit was now three hundred fifty dollars. That sounds pretty good, right? Three hundred fifty dollars. And I live with that. Maybe our right. Well, what happens when the remain? So I go and have you in the crowns? This is now my second point. I numbed you took off the temporary. I sit on its. Wrong. And we'll talk about if you'd be clues unit. It could be margin. It could be a proximal context that could be caller. It's wrong or I put it in a Monday, reduce let's say closely, and you break next week and you come back in. Well, I owe you that new ground, Gary, you broke it wants Lee office at your responsibility. Gimme another thousand bucks. I eat that. So I have you back in and I cut that off and I have to take a new impression. So let's see I charge us zero. I still have two hundred fifty dollars an hour overhead. I still use fifty dollars worth of materials the labs it. You know, what you're a good customer. We're not gonna charge. Thank god. What it cost me three hundred dollars for a remake costs meet money and allows the same way most expensive thing the laboratory will do is a remake because they get no money for that and still costs because there's material costs involved with that. So if we if we look at we tried ice late where we see remakes number one is marginal integrity, and I will tell you this. And i'm..
