"I was trying to interrupt you moments ago okay. Two questions down two lanes here. The first one is just a little bit of history. Just very mariners fan. That looks at it and goes okay. So help me understand. This and i know every rebuild is different but we played the padres and got swept by them. And you can see that. They toward all the way down and and brand people in the super young superstar and everything else and they built that thing up into. What looks like a playoff contender and man. What an amazing raffle with the dodgers for years and years to come the chicago white sox right. We watched that. We saw them a couple years ago and spring training. They tore that thing all the way down. They built back up. They've got a couple of young superstars other veteran pieces before them was obviously theo and chicago and what he did with the cubs and a book was written about that curse was broken and everything else in those rebuilds. Those three in particular were they. Linear could you. Could you track that and say okay. This is what we're doing in. Here's the process in a in. The ship was constantly moving forward in a somewhat. The padres the padres were all over the map right. I mean they were. The definition of non linear edgy. Preller was out there just like i mean he's making jerry dipoto look boring doing random things very random so back and forth by month of what they wanted. Some of them worked some of them. Didn't and then eventually part of it is. They spent some money right. You went out and sign hosmer and you signed machado and you got the superstar and you know all of those things and then you went out this year and just traded for every available starting pitcher. You could find with a pulse and it's worked. It's worked really really well. There's no doubt but they weren't able to do all of that until they built up their farm system to being one of the best in baseball. The real proof of a rebuild though from all these teams from the royals to the padres to the red sox to the astros Even to the cubs they picked a time when they said we're no longer in. We need to get draft spots. We no longer play for draft spots and at that time it doesn't mean they started spending crazy amounts of money but win started to matter. It didn't matter if they made the playoffs but they need to start winning but so but does anyone think the mariners are in that spot as of this past like they haven't shown that there in that spot they didn't act that way they have not act. Maybe they should have in the in this past off season. I think that's a fair question. I don't think that's jerry dipoto issue right right. I mean. I don't think jerry dipoto was the one going our guys. I don't want to spend any money yet. Like i just. I don't believe that going into the final year of his contract in baseball rolled out the roster that they have right now given the opportunity to spend five million yuan fully backup at first base. Get out. I don't buy the jerry. I wanna spend any money in the final year of my contract. Okay secondly second little channel here. Second little avenue. We know they did this a few years ago. I'm already on a yellow legal pad. As i sit here at my desk right now. You're colored sharpies salk. Rachane can't even tell what color any of them are. Different colors i have the cosmic color. How many are there in here. Forty two sharpies. I believe when i did the spring league bro. It took a lot of sharpies. Try to figure those things out colored glasses. yeah. I did that years ago with the sharpies. I don't even know what colors they are. It doesn't really matter. I just know they're different colors. You can't tell their different different different colors. Light brown dark brown medium brown right exactly whatever however. I see the world okay. That's fine. she just hit my love button. So i have this yellow legal for these. Don't ever say hit my love button. Don't say that no stop that. I'm gonna sell over now the love if you just let it probably would have just said at one robert. What rock stop it. Stop that might say that again if you want me to read you another story. Don't talk to me. Use that phrase ever again. I have a yellow legal pad in front of me. We know they did this. Exercise years ago when they decided to tear down they all sat together and it convention in their in their rooms. Jerry and john stanton and other management and all wrote down right kind of the reasons to. And where's this roster hat and winter we're going to be able to compete and everything else. The challenge right now is who makes this decision on jerry. Dipoto john stanton and who is this. John stains yellow legal pad. John stanton son that works in the organization few folks in the scouting department that work under a who makes this decision on jerry. Dipoto there are. You're a very good point. I don't want to argue with it. I think you're bringing up a really good question. Part of the answer is that john's not by himself. I mean there is a large ownership group. It's not just one single owner that is very very and there's a group of maybe five or six core owners that honor those baseball guys or these guys tuned into baseball enough to go. Okay a few of them are yes. Let's pull out this legal pad because we've got a decision to make because to how point when we decide to pull the trigger on this when we decide to say you know what george kirby and emerson hancock and local gilbert now l. We got killing. Okay we've got our first rounders. We've made a number of these picks we've got our farm system in a place like are we ready to pull that trigger. Pull that lever and say let's go. Let's do do we feel good about these resources. That are in place that they did in san diego that they did. How did they feel good about the resources you have at this point. What else could you want. Been extent dipoto. My answer is yes. I would do that. I would have to end. Dipoto and i would extend scott service i would. I would extend both of them. Now it's possible. They're not interested in that they. I mean it's possible dipoto. But my i don't know i don't. I don't wanna do that. I'm really unhappy about what happened this past off season. I don't know how this is going down. I am out of the loop so to speak. Yeah we we don't know if he's wanted to do a lot of things and then gotten answers. That back were unsatisfied. I exactly. I will let you know when i have some inside info or whatever i don't have any i don't know what's going on with this contract negotiation to answer the question. I would extend dipoto. I don't think it's necessarily dunk decision. Because i think there is some very compelling evidence on the other side and if you were to come here and say mike what about x. y. and z. I might not have arguments. I'd point to a b and c as being the opposite. But i. I can't argue. Jp crawford just sheffield and evan white. Yeah i don't know whether those guys are like examples that you're doing a bad job but they haven't proven they're certainly not in the extended category right there in the i you know..

"To catch a little bit of the old time religion right ear. Baby junior stepping up to the plate here comes strength and the pitch to junior on the way swing and a fly ball at the baby is going to be the time. Did your dad that dog and we are back at least how you start. The day matters so good. So good. Reach back and found the fastball. One last time he's like well. I'm let loose. I don't know if we're going to get a chance to see this guy again. That's right he gave it all. Well all right well celtics up. Fans got what they wanted. Kalmyk is here. Gilbert's up did it pay immediate dividends the way everyone was hoping more was until we brought passing on the passing curse so twenty one and nineteen. Who's paying some dividends and then we decide and really. I decided because i sent the text to pass on field. So i'll take full responsibility for the seven game skid that they finally snapped on a monday night in oakland but yes unfortunately the past curse hit them as it did last year when he wrote but daniel vogel bach. And a great start for the mariners. This unbelievable team and then they went. So i take full responsibility for it. Did it pay dividends. well not immediate ones. I mean i. I think that's the problem. I have a long with. The whole thing was or kill. Nick thing was. It felt like people thought. If we just get jared kalmykia. This team will start hitting better. And i think that's always a mistake when you're talking about a twenty one year old kid in the major leagues. I thought then. I think it now. I hope that there are people who will try to remember this lesson. The next time. Julia rodriguez is almost ready or whomever it is. That generally twenty one year olds who have played like seven games above single. A aren't your answer to fix a bad lineup. That doesn't mean derek. Kilmer not the answer term. I think he is joe. Adele was cut like five home runs in his last six games. Or something for the angels. You remember watching that kid. Last year he looked lost. Awful even in the field. You couldn't even track a fly ball. Couldn't play and now he's up and he's he's doing. The thing that a top prospect is supposed to do. Jack kelanic may start doing it sooner rather than later because he was brought up and there were plenty of good reasons to want nick to start the clock and get going so that you can eventually have him. Learn all of the all of the challenges that go into being a big leaguer and the pitch sequencing and the curve balls everything else that comes with seeing the kind of talent they see every night but if you thought that he was going to immediately fix the lineup. You're nuts no way. Do you think there was a feeling the people you think that was a delusional feeling people had this is a mariner mendoza lineup. Yes i mean. They're they're hitting on one thousand nine is crew as a team. I got the sense. That was a huge part of peel. In cal- guess what else. What else would you want him up. Just said he deserve the opportunity that he was a talented kid that you wanted to see a star play is i kind of said to you before. The season began selfish. Oh i just wanna see star play. Well okay you're not gonna look like a star now is was there one percent of me. That believed that he was going to come up. And all of a sudden just lift like a rising tide all these broken bats. No okay good. No i did. I did not. Maybe howdy howdy. Did how do you think that absolutely. That's revisionist history. I'll tell you what's gonna tell. How definitely now. How tolman told me that. He's specifically senate. How does straw man in this particular. Yes no. I think there was a sense out there and maybe it's just the twitter verse. Which of course is not like realize the trouble is how how close their record was you. Were five hundred team when this thing all went down. Felt like if you're you need you need to at least maintain that and you've got to make an improvement. This would be an improvement right. And if they do that then they can keep themselves in position than everything else can fall into place. That's the generous way to look at anybody concerned about kelly. I hope not. i hope. No one's concerned because he had a tough first week in the big leagues domino. Also hope is concerned because year. Joerg amac's i don't speak ill of the dead. He's got a sewing vol boy. He stinks what man he does. Have a heck of a swing. I know he hasn't made perfect contact in the first week. But i mean that's second home. Run he hit monday night against the haze that thing leapt off as a great game. Right you see. Kyle lewis hit a home run. You see kelanic hit a home run right like you start to see some of these things that other good start from you say could potentially be part of your future. I think that's one of those games. You're like yeah all right this is. This is where i catch. A glimpse of what. This kabanich. The question i really have though is now. What are celtics. Gilbert's up now. What wh what what are you. What do you think is going to happen. Next what do you want to happen next. And i think unfortunately the answer to that is not simple. This is not one of those cases where you can just come in as a radio host miracle. This has to happen next. I don't. I don't know that there's like a linear straight path. Line predetermined fate for how this goes next. I was i was thinking about. There's a scene in a late episode of middle episode of the west wing. Where hit the staff of the president is looking for what they call the ten. Were answer brock. It's like the very simple way that you answer a problem. What do you think about healthcare. You give a ten word answer that everyone in the country is supposed okay. I understand that your business plan better. Be able to be framed in ten words. Mission statement is a radio station better able be framed in ten words and that's super helpful for convincing people of things but it's not actually the way the world works and the message of the episode is like. Yeah that's fine unless you're the president and then you actually have to be able to know more than the ten word answer. Yes you can give that to people out there but you actually have to have a complex understanding of just how difficult and challenging the real world is and i think that's kind of where the mariners are. I don't know that there's like this simple ten word answer. What do you do with scott..

You know, you get a rally going at home and you start building off the adrenaline and momentum that the crowd can help bring you in on the flip side, having to deal with it on the road, you know as a young player, and you're on the mound or you're having a big at bat with the game on the line, and you know that. "At T Mobile Park fans will be back into the stands and our Mariners insider Shannon Dreyer is here. Theo, tell us what we could expect the season first, You must be pretty excited to see the fans back. Oh, yeah, It's absolutely thrilled to get to see people come into the ballpark, and I really didn't know until they weren't there. Just the impact that they have and the energy that they bring to a stadium and then just, you know the idea that this is really the first kind of mass live event in Seattle. Since the end of March last year. Ah, a lot of excitement surrounding all of this. This should be the year where all the agony of the previous years is finally behind us, and the team can start to sing. Yeah, you hope so, you know, Unfortunately, under the original plan, that's absolutely would have been that year. But last year season, which was to be a developmental season, the opportunity Get the young players. We all full season in the big leagues and get their legs under them turned out to be just two months. So you know, I I don't know how much they can accelerate through this year and by the end point to be where they hope to be. It's you've got to be realistic and realized how much was lost last year. But being down in spring training for three weeks, they think the imagination does start to wander a little bit because we saw some great performances from not only the young stars they're going to start the season with the big league squad, but the ones that are kind of come come up during the year. So, Yeah, I think that at the very least, I think this team should finish very strongly. And I think people should have a good feeling about it. That the group that they put together as the potential to be something special. I think I'm very out of touch with the

"mariners" Discussed on Brock and Salk
"That's what my parents came out to To spend a week here with the kids and they're on the mariners game news. Friday night's game and my dad told treadmills up my dad. You gotta my dad. Born red sox fan. If you don't play for the red sox you don't play major league baseball. It's like they're all your yeah. There's there's fifty two guys in major league baseball. Twenty six on the red sox twenty-six that he kind of knows on the yankees and then everyone else in the minor leagues even as jane has gotten the mariner natto matter okay. It doesn't matter. I was talking about it with my dad. Had to drive to work this morning. And so i was asking him like how talking jack kelanic today. And he's like who's cheese. No nothing zero zip zilch. He played for a team in new york. You got mookie betts out on the west coast now like where is he for the angel. My dad does the to where you'd be like. Mookie betts will come up like the dodgers are on tv or something and he'll be sitting there. It's like the dodgers giants or something. And he'll go. Mookie betts like our mookie betts. He boston he didn't die. He didn't fall off the face of the earth. It's not like columbus and what they thought was going to happen like you know he's fine. It's just he's in another city same guy with the same name. He just doesn't play for your team anymore. But my dad's taylor trammell the other day and writers who by my tail mel young like. He's probably gonna make team. Yeah look at a swing. He was just completely blown away by taylor dramatic few minutes later. I think he's singled in a couple of runs at hormone later in that game. Just like you can kind of see it with him. You don't have to be a baseball expert. Not that my dad's in his in his swing most resemble suck. I mean my dad. These days mostly watching softball players in their sixties. And so i don't know lebron's lord herbert manley off. There's like a softball you know. How about to your. I have all the different guys and swings. you've seen through the years as mariner. I gotta see lost swing. It's a pretty traditional lefty swing. It doesn't have all the golfing. Beauty of griffey's. It's not that but it's a it's a pretty nice even smooth but not too. Long lefty swing. There's a lot to like. I'll see. If i can come up with a comp i dunno one jumps out howdy howdy. He's got three. Is vin cat. Who is it howdy. I need to study at some more. I it's unique. I like it. It's smooth but yeah. I don't know if i can give you calm. Is it a. Is it a left handed. Haniger as you can't compare rates they watch it pal. It's not haniger because haniger looks like he's got his whole foot rolls over. I mean that's an in its own. Category of china generate torque. So yeah these tremendous athlete to right. I mean he sees this. Is that we in this last week or two weeks ago. If this is the most athletic team that we will have seen with the mariners since we've watched him for the last dozen years a couple years we've seen you know that's what they said. They wanted they want to be hard to play against. They looked at the astros and how difficult they were in and tried to model some of this after them. So yeah tremendous run around a little bit. You got a bunch of guys on this team who will take off when given the opportunity at first base and may help them more eventually if they do end up with this larger basis or limiting the pickoff move some of the ideas that are right now minor league baseball and may find their way to the top of. Kyle's right. The story that that of course begs. Conversation is jared cowen. Who will start in the minors. I will just say flat out. I like this. I am glad kelanic is starting in the minors and i am quite frankly. Brooke sicker people pretending they're upset about it for any reason other than that. They're patient and wanna see him. I'm so upset for what is it because you are impatient. Because i just want him. I want the whole show. I want to the humble pie that he's going to eat. I want the braggadocious. I want the edge. I just i think. I speak for a lot of fans. I just wanna see a great. We have been starved of young superstar. Talent of this nature since rod been twenty years since we've had prospect. Don't give me brandon moro. Don't give me mike zeno give you both of those guys. They were absolutely child. Labor of this player. They were not regarded as one of the three best. They were not the next. You know fernando tatis. They were not the next a rod in griffey. That is the camp in the air that this guy in his rare talent puts him in. I want to. I'd swansea for better for worse for everything else. I just as a mariners fan like. Let's go okay. So it's going to cost us a few million bucks down the road if he's really gonna cost you a year down there. It could cost you a year down the road which by the way is a huge deal and the fact to kevin said it publicly and all of the sudden people pretended to get upset about service. Time does not does not mean that. You shouldn't continue to manipulate service time. It's what's called doing business the right way and making sure you are exempt doing exactly what marriage fans want the team to do focus on winning for as long as possible giving yourself as good a chance as you possibly can jared kelanic. Guess is wants to go to free agency as soon as possible regardless of how much he likes it here and how much success he has if you give him whatever five years on a super two. He'll be a free agent after five years. That's what he wants not going to sign a deal. You know of that approach great. You can love that about him. Don't you want six years. Instead of five with them. Wants an extra couple weeks. He gets to be excited about braggadocio. After twenty one years. I worried about six years from now. I'm wondering about your in now. I can wait another forty another story. More colin cowherd do you remember colin cowherd orpheus. And.

"Done but it's i don't know how how stunned you can be just given what you were saying about Knowing this guy a little bit but you haven't spoken a greater truth outside of the casino one when you say that the thing that jarring about seeing that youtube speech is how very not human. These people are who are his employees. They are commodities. You mentioned widgets that this you can't have that. Be the thing in sports atop your organization just because it makes you money. After the summer we just went through. But you might be able to get away with it because asian americans can be more can be spent smeared more easily in this country at this point. Then even hispanics and blacks. That you're just i don't know how this guy gets toppled but this can't be in two thousand and twenty one. It just can't be no i. It'd be unbelievably stupid. For the mariners to continue this way. And i don't know how it works do they. Is it gonna be blowback from. Fan continued push on social media. Or is it a major sponsors like alaska airlines Emerald queen casino which is one of the major casinos if they start pulling out sponsorship dollars is that force it honestly. I tweeted this last night when it comes to things like this. The manners never make the practical or logical decision at the practical or logical time. They just don't and it's indicative of this organization and how they run things It's it's why they are have been so bad as an organization and if you're a fan earlier this year they were talking about not spending money on this team after having one of the lowest payrolls and and and one of the richest ownership groups. But they're doing this rebuild. Needed wanna spend this year because they were trying to manipulate the free agent market and they. You've heard owners talk about being in debt and the fear of a taking on debt. And i'm thinking to myself. Ninety percent of this country lives in a constant state of debt. At all times they do and they operated on and yet even in that state of debt. They're still willing to pay overprice tickets overpriced beers over parking to see a product that isn't even commensurate with 'em mobile standards. And they do that because they care about this stuff. Probably more than the ownership cares about making money ryan. I have the guy that could topple him each row. Because i i'm serious. If he led the way with the former players speaking about how poorly this organization is run he would never he would never have a person is president is if each row can get behind this or get in front of this and get a lot of people behind him. I think we can get ryan. He would never he would. Never i wa. I don't know why you're rushing in to try and get someone fired. Actually i do know that's at is what you always do. Yes you love the. Please don't join my arm on this particular conversation. It's a good idea though. It is but he would. Never this is actually. This is an interesting cultural sort of stereotype but each row would never bring that indignity. When what kind of controversy is each row ever gonna have. He doesn't do that stuff publicly. no he really doesn't and he's You know it. it's. It's one thing like i'd never been to japan and the mariners went to japan last year and and seeing that culture up close and then understanding how my my grandparents operated. I really understood. And i don't know that he would do that. But you're right. He has the power to to make a change because the the manners right now. They don't have superstar power within the organization. You know you don't have a clayton kershaw This has to be different. You know and and they so you know their their best player is named marlins allah's He's just a guy that is you know just starting to sort himself. They have a lot of young players. Kyle seager their best player in only all star. Kevin maller called overpaid. And i wanna say you helped to prove the contract and you call them overpaid on the on. The on the podcast. Well so i. I don't see each row doing it. He does have the power he does have. He's he's actually a coach. He's here in arizona right now with the team getting ready for spring training. He's a coach. He's within the organization. A sashi kumar. The guy you complaint with the matter complain about as a coach here i get. I guess maybe if the players kind of walked out on this or did something or took a stand. But i don't know that they have the players that they have the cash aid to do that all the other than each. I just don't know because felix hernandez anonymous organization anymore and and all the stars i mean griffey is kind of distanced himself a little bit at times from this organization in in this ownership group though. He's still technically a member of the front office. Is this the responsibility like look. i understand. Giambi teams respond. But let's backtrack here for a second right because not unlike the capture nick situation like whose responsibility is this. Is it the asians responsibility to call for a guy to be fired because he was anti-asian in a way that's not acceptable or do you need some more. So why does it have to be the athlete. Like who else. If i were to ask you ryan if someone were to lead a cause on this needs to get more attention needs to be a national story. What this guy said is not okay the way he treats players. I understand it's nuanced and complicated. Because he's giving a breakfast speech in which he's giving an hour look into. Oh all cold man. This is just another hedge fund guy who doesn't have to be appropriate. Who can drink whatever he wants and shoot his mouth off and always keep a job because they'll keep labor cheap labor is minority and even if he's slurring that labor when he's talking to breakfast clubs and he's a little too loose with his language like it's not ok who can come out and be an advocate that smokes out this guy so that he has on top of him a weight and a pressure. The tells america. This isn't all right that this guy is sitting here talking about translators. Basically servants. I feel like ryan. Maybe it's evolved. Since since i've known it but i remember what those guys did they come over here and they uproot their entire life and they become this all purpose valet in life coach for these guys to complain about seventy five thousand dollars with somebody. Who's helping you through a cultural shift. That swallowed decky Who was it was irabu. The who was the guy known as the fat. Tony swallowed like we. We practically killed that guy because of how hard that transition is to complain about seventy five grand to help those guys transition a new life when that's what you get out of those arms like we're not they're not that disposable this guy is vastly more disposable than the people. He's not treated humanely here. Oh i agree completely. I don't know who should take the step forward i would. I would think people within the organization. He is not well liked by his employees. Maybe employees take step forward the players as well. I think it has to be a collective. I don't know the one person and the danettes. It's stupid that we even have to sit there and say who has to take a step board. John stanton the chairman of the mariners. The owner who has been a longtime businessman. "Party is slaying Slade corrobos, Tim that is has not stopped dropping dick since Japan. I can't really this guy's been a pain in my ass since two thirty in the morning in the middle of fuck and March he's his lugging seven seventy three. And I'm sitting here going. All right. Like, I I'm not taking shoot away from from from back at all not taking anything away from him. But I'm thinking to myself is this what we're fucking dealing with right now is about to happen or is Malik Smith and like Tim Beckham just about two, and I'm even thinking about my boy, Ryan Healy. Yeah. Are all these dudes just about emerge like what I'm scared of Jared what I'm scared of. And I'll be very Frank. I'm scared of what what happened to the as last year happening to the Mariners this year, like they're all just going to be like, all right? You guys trying to get better together. Let's do and you just get like five dudes who were bubble guys. Maybe maybe a few of them that like we're going to be role players that are now like, you know, what? Now on this kind of like everyday player train. Now. Fuck it. Who would be really good? How this looks? Yeah. I mean, I can appreciate you at least extending that all of branch to the Mariners and their fans. They don't have the talent that as last year. But you're you're right. But but see I don't know that everybody assesses that situation the same. If the age don't have that type of season. Like, I I think it's they made it really easy like for people to say, well, they're good. They've got good players on that team. As did the as made it easy for. I think for folks who say that you add minutely we're watching the as a little more closely than than you have in years past. So I got you got a good feel for that. But you're right. They have locking studs, man. They do I just think that the Mariners they could they could be just a click away from like, you said Tim Beckham going, so he doesn't have a fucking nine year window where he's great maybe three year window where he. Just outstanding for who knows. Maybe that's now. And if it is I like, you know for two fucking not be please. So right now as as like the Seattle Mariners are in a situation where they're looking great. But their teams in that division that are are better than them that haven't played up to their standards just yet that being the as and the Astros but the Astros. They've they've quote unquote turned a corner this hold on turn turn the corner. They they turned a corner because they were playing poorly. Right. But then they swept the Yankees in in Houston. So after that shadow to the Astros, by the way that it's not easy to turn corners in baseball. It's you know, sometimes you get pulled him one direction. There's nothing you can do. It's like when the Titanic sank and in Jack was just getting yet down to the bottom of the ocean. By that current it just it happens. It just happens sometimes and during a baseball season so credit to the Astros for swimming to the top of the surface there and that series against New York in about four games writer, three games this three games. Yep. Three games. Very. Like a small quarter. Yeah. He has a quick corner to turn around the Astros that ever swept the Yankees ever. Yes. What the fuck really? That's you got to think about how much time they spent in the NL. Yeah. Don't think too much about that. Because then it makes my stat less impressive. Noticed that was not enough. It's true. Those fucking cutting room floor scrap impressive, nevertheless. After this game. Kick it down to the. Yes network. Yeah. Boots on the ground..

How many times have I petitioned for the NHL hockey rules to be transferred over to the baseball field done it? I've asked for it to happen. Let them let them roll you. And me, let's go if you can stop me into a muddle you've turned into an oil stain. Great see a hope I can still pitch if not that was an asshole move by me, wasn't it. Yeah. Like that guy's just ready to go whether whether you've wronged him or not it's he's just ready to defend his teammates via fisticuffs. I'm going to call an audible here to of. Two topics. This. There's two topics that I want to hit on today. The first one let's give some love to the Seattle. Mariners while dropping lots of de everywhere. The Pacific northwest is on fire corrobos on fire my Twitter feed getting blown up booking mariner fans. It's what they're twelve and two. And I think they've homered in all fourteen games about bucking Mitch Haniger. My God who we wanted to get on the spikes up tour didn't work out. But not no forever. Nope. Out right now just to couldn't right now. Yeah. Seattle Mariners have the best run differential in major league baseball through through fourteen games. There are plus forty one. They've won nine of their last ten five straight coming into Thursday. I don't like and they're seven and water on the road. There's seven one on the road. Are we buying this small sample from from the the early going from the Seattle? Mariners. I can't. Well, I just remember what was it? It was either last year the year before our member talking about the Seattle manners. 'cause they they held a playoff spot somewhat decently into the season. And what was the canosa's bench in last year? Yes. Okay. So then it was last year because we were talking about canot like where are they going? What are they gonna do with them when he comes back, and because he is not eligible for the postseason if the mayor's make it we're talking postseason for that. Mariners team last year. Do you get the sense that, you know, without Edwin d as we know that they're not a better team in that regard necessarily. But what about just what about this? Mariners team just feels different to you versus the Seattle Mariners of a year ago. 'cause there is a completely different feel. I feel like I mean. There's a a longer line of. I think that's ultimately what you take away from this team. Now is I mean because there were guys who came up last year during the season. Like, I'm trying to think what Vogel box is a name that I think comes to mind. Yeah. Who the fuck was this, dude? He came out of nowhere, and he was fucking throwing head a little bit. And I just I think I just just shit like that. You're like you have an idea of who these guys are now. Why? And I guess I'm speaking more from a guy who watches the AL west, you know, very closely. It's not a lineup that you're like. Oh, wow. Oh, you guys. I mean, come on tip fucking is. This is the Tim Beckham coming out party is slaying Slade corrobos, Tim that is has not stopped dropping dick since Japan. I can't really this guy's been a pain in my ass since two thirty in the morning in the middle of fuck and March he's his.

"Prospects all using one season ticket package and that's our marketing team took that information in greeted at the also created one that was a little bit more business focused and so we've been testing that and I think that's when we look at kind of some of the changes over time in general with marketing and sales in the relationships over time that has evolved as well you know I think I'm curious to hear also what you are able to learn share with some of your counterparts in other teams. I can't imagine that Microsoft and apple and Google are sharing marketing and sales ideas very often but in your competitors really are competitive. You're sort of the other teams and other markets. You don't necessarily compete with for these ticket sales. How much sharing is there between yourself and your counterparts at some of the other teams Major League Baseball on perhaps teams your counterparts in other sports while you're right? We don't compete. We compete on the field but we don't necessarily compete in the market so I would say across M._l._b.. There's quite a bit of sharing both on the marketing <hes> side but also the sale hillside and we meet regularly we have regular calls sharing best practices. Each market is unique so that can be challenging but we are often talking to each other about how really two to raise the profile of the industry in general and then certainly outside of the industry there are outside of M._l._b.. There are other leagues that we consult with on a regular basis. I am not above ever of picking up the phone and calling someone that I saw a great idea. How did you do it? How did it work and I think that that's something that we encourage? I mean we encourage our our team to do that. Across the board in this market as well as outside market okay awesome just couple more minutes here with Francis Trace when the senior vice president of sales at the Seattle Mariners and I'm curious as you as you build your sales team in as you look to hire new sales reps and then a lot of people probably think it'd be a lot of fun to work for a professional sports organization nation but at the end of the day it is still it is a job is a sales job. You have to hit your number. <hes> they're just like anywhere else what are some of the attributes of good sales reps and good new hires you look for are they different for ticket sales versus corporate sales in you know what kind of experience Rodriguez are you looking for some of your ideal neck sales. That's a really good question. I mean I think are fundamentally. People need to have just a general first of all a desire to work ethic you. You you'd said it best sale. I've always wanted to work in sports or I roy's wanted to work for. The mariners is key to that is work. Now is the key to that phrase so I think there's just an overarching fundamental caring about in doing a good job. That is a fundamental. <hes> you know trait that we're looking for. Is that in your pass that something that you've been striving for is excellence in some area and overarching for me I think in order to the good at sales is really a general curiosity in interest you know there are a lot of people that can talk to prospects than <hes> consumers but really if you are curious. You're going to make the most of that conversation. You're going to lead that conversation into the next level so that to me is a trait that is perhaps a little under <hes> valued in general and certainly need to be organized. You need to have perseverance. Perseverence would be helpful to have some strategic thinking that those are some things we can help you with <hes> in general. I really believe that just a good solid person who wants to do the best job we can. We can help. We can teach you how to sell if you are a good person who has the desire to to be the best. That's great well last question as we wrap up here in just a couple more minutes. You've been with the Organization for over twenty years. It's it's it's impressive to me. How many senior leaders with the mariners have similar tenure Kevin Martinez with the organization? Almost as long as you have tim heavily who was back back in the day he was my boss when I was when I was an intern with the P._R.. Department with the Mariners when I was in school and still bill is the vice president of communications what are some of the advantages of having sort of course sales marketing leadership team that has such longevity in the organization but what are also some of the pitfalls that might come along with that in terms of sort of having some of the same four walls in the same perspective for such a long period of time that you have to watch yeah. I mean you've said it best way. I can't say enough about the organization why we've been here. We've all been here for so long. Is that while it's the same baseball played every a year. It's always something different. I mean it's very exciting industry to work in. It's constantly changing their new opportunities in in challenges each year so I think that that speaks to why I'm here why Kevin's Year Tim's here we also are very fortunate to have a extremely stable ownership group and a very supportive ownership group that that wants to be successful here in Seattle so so we're fortunate to have that and so with not not having the changes day to day that some other organizations have you know any kind of changing leadership can be challenging for an organization can be invigorating or it can be challenging. <hes> we do try to challenge ourselves. I think that's just inherent in our organization that it's not just time to make the donuts every day. We're we are always looking at. How can we do this better? How can we do this differently and it all comes back to our main? Focus is on our fan. You know we know that we have a baseball side that is focused on trying to have our baseball team win on the field but in the end what the things that we can control are the fan experience and how you feel when you're you're in contact with someone from our organization so I I would say we do a fairly good job internally of challenging ourselves in trying to get outside of just this is how we always do it. Love it will we are unfortunately at a time Wanna think again. I guess Francis Tradesman our senior vice president of sales for the Seattle Mariners like I said a lot of people listening to this <hes> it's the end of February beginning March depending on when you're getting this episode it may still be cold but baseball is right around the corner in the exciting new season the best time of year for every team. Every team is tied for first place and you never know what's going to happen on the on the field so thank you Francis for joining us. Thanks everyone for listening to another episode. We'll see you next time on sales pipeline radio. The way we do business is advancing faster than ever before yet amongst disruptions. There's one pillar that stay standing through it. "By there's a lot of interesting moving parts. It is a classic classic race trade and a classic mariner straight. I like that. We just spent fifteen minutes talking about Mike Zunino from Alex Smith, just just let us wait until James Paxton gets traded, right? Which could be any second now Lee chant axed, right after we finished recording takes about James Paxton, if he gets traded, and depending on what he gets traded for here's one of my takes them going to preview it James Paxton now goes, Lance Lynn, James hawks like most predict probably my favorite pitcher in baseball right now. So how dare you get out my favorite picture? The difference is Lance Lynn has you know, a track record of extended major league success the level of the innings eater versus the guy. Who's actually it is like these are the extremes. Yeah. Well, it feels strange to be talking about the Mariners on a purely Xs and os level to retouching your bellwether makers are racist or not. But it was awkward. I wanted to use the Daniel Mangan retina puppies from the storm drain story that came out this morning, a segue. But I don't know if that would have made it more or less awkward. No. I don't know. Well, what I was going to say is that there was some buzz before this trade was made about. About how the manners might consider just tearing down and going full rebuild. And I do think they're one of the more interesting teams, not just because they're always one of the more active teams over the offseason. But because they are in this position where you wonder whether at some point they are just going to say, okay, we gave it a shot and will commit to several more seasons of not making the playoffs while we actually rebuild this thing. And I don't know whether this trade tells us anything one way or another about whether that's their thinking, I know that there were subsequent reports. After the reports that said, they might do that that said, they probably won't do that seems like it's probably still influx. In maybe depends on what sort of offers, they get but tax can go, and that doesn't necessarily commit them, I suppose to a long-term rebuild now. Because pats not going to be a part of the next good. Mariners team. He's too old. Here's the guy. He's not too old Shohei Ohtani the American League rookie of the year. That was a good segue Verkey of your. This because you have people with their tribal affiliations to a team that just kind of instinctively react and say, oh, well, she was fired, and she's bitter, and she's just making up these stories, and we just can't know whether that's true or untrue at has to be investigated. And we'll be and hopefully, we will find out the truth, and we'll see whether these claims can be corroborated because some of the claims they're pretty specific to hear, you know, we're talking about specific conversations we're talking about the specific trainers. She saying we're dismissed because of racism, I mean, there are things here that I don't know whether they're easily verified or refuted. But we are. We know what we're talking about here. It's not just some nebulous claims, which of course, could be true. But here we have very definite claims. And the Mariners response has been am I wrong in thinking it's a little more strident than denials or where? We're looking at this statements have been on both sides. Really? I mean the way that out being like, this her naming names, and and citing specific instances is. Yeah. Like, I mean, it it varies shows you. Yeah. I don't know. That's unusual. But it shows you like this is serious. This is not just an embittered employee on the way out or you know, on the way out the door. But the Mariners savant back. It's not just we're looking into it. It's cheese making this office. Centrally it's very the whole thing. I don't feel like I have a a great handle on it. Because it's it's just not how these things usually play. And I mean, if you look at maybe this is getting too in the details, but a lot of the comments she says were made specifically about Dominican players. A lot of the Mariners important players are from the Dominican Republic Nelson Cruz who is a free agent now. But he's from the Dominican Republic she and Sagrada Robinson canal like these are important players in the organization who would presumably be affected if these views are seen to happen throughout this organization and would probably want to see this investigated to not to to speak for them. But this is. The kind of thing that has a lot of different effects and a lot of different places. You know, if you kind of parse the Mariners statement, it's hard exactly to tell you know. Of course, they're vehemently denying many of her claims, but they are also refuting the claim that they fired a trainer, but they say, you know, we haven't terminated a trainer this off season, which is very specific. She didn't necessarily say that it was this off season and terminated can mean many things right in baseball. It's kind of a a seasonable gig often where you kind of worked from one year to the next, and this is about the time that people get new jobs or lose their jobs, and you can have a contract not renewed. So maybe they just mean. Well, we didn't fire them. We just let their contract expire. I don't know. It's hard to say we have to wait for some fact-finding to happen here at set sort of where I'm at I want to want to know more. And I imagine we will find out more before too long with the. You know, a lawsuit does get filed and majorly baseball's investigation, and if it's good that MLB, obviously MLB is going to investigate this..

"The Mariners for MLB dot com. And Greg Mariners whenever happens. These last couple of months of the season is gonna be fascinating. It's going to be a major storyline just because they are trying to end that longest playoff drought in North American professional sports. You know, at one time it seemed like they're running away with at least a wildcard spot. They fell back the as caught them, and it was interesting to see how both those clubs approach the trade deadline. From the Mariners perspective, they acquired Cameron Mabon from the Marlins. And then they beefed up their bullpen. Zach, Duke Adam, Warren and Sam to Eva Lula. Good old Sami t- so what did you think about their trade deadline approach? I know a lot of people were expecting them maybe at a starting pitcher, but it would seems like in this particular market, you know, they kinda you dance with the what's there. Basically, they beefed up their bullpen instead. Maybe learn us to. On that. You know, the remarks Chinky earlier I got onto to Vallejo. It's always a challenge in the writing business as you guys know. They went, I guess people been clamoring for them to add to that rotation since the since last winter really end to put on like our guys like Marco Gonzalez turned out to be a huge, give them monkey mainly less than it might be last less always come in solid in James Paxton or. Been the hope for when the scene so that the struggle with Felix keeping him healthy in cal-, getting him back to any semblance of Felix really big question there. So they got, got, you know, locations, Ben good. They feel like. Far at another start with those guys are expensive in the with the resources they have and really probably the lack of prospects to compete for some of the relief stars didn't figure the is that could get really gonna help that much got a reservoir near us close to coming off the of the deal could Essen depth to that those rotation. So they gotta win heavy on the bullpen, brought in three guys in on that. I guess it's kind of trendies Bill that will shorten the games and see if you've made that works. So so far they've been, it's been a pretty good formula their stars enough to get him in this position where if they can keep those guys healthy enough down the stretch at intimate homerun. So guy cameramen really a veteran centerfield.

"The thing is they can't it's difficult if you're a team in others visually further raise do you by yourself do you trade blake snell and try and get prospects and say okay we'll wait for the red sox to get bad again or something like that or right for the yankees get bad again because you can't move visions you're stuck in your division it's it's it's it's it's a sucky honestly so you trade them do you what do you do with those guys that are playing really well you can ask the same thing for the as i do trade frankie montage do you trade mine olsen yet because i mean they're going to trade him eventually well as do but do they think that they can make a run for that wild card and catch the kits the mariners because i mean the as are basically the same onto their it gains back in the of the mariners in the wild card games back in the mariners in the division offices same record so whatever the thinks that they can get up on doesn't at what they can try but it's going to be tough sledding that of the play probably six hundred seven hundred seventy wind seventy percent of their games the rest of the season and hope the mariners just tank so it's going to be tough sledding for them in that omarosa mariners mirrors looking good right now they've card out enough leads they get these win streak like this they can still go they win seven in a row beautifully and seven zero next week if you go three and three next week or or whatever you go or go at four three and four it's not a big deal you just won seven in a row so you're still twelve year lasts five twelve year last fifteen or something like that or twelve year last sixteen so is on a big deal if you lose a couple of games after winning a big streak like that so you gotta love those streak seven game winning streak for the mariners a league high for sure right now as the not that is in on the streak is a giant suffer coming off of that sweep of the dynamex going to talk about a division that's the opposite of the other divisions the division out west and the one out east in american league this is white open just actually wide open dodgers and giants or both two and a half back the diamondbacks caught rockies are still there to six games back so the giants dodgers are also one in that back of the of the wild card with the fill it with the phillies in that second wildcard so i mean you got you kind of put you to for most of ways i mean looking at the teams who can make the playoffs in the national i know tom it's july second why talking about playoffs because we have to set it up and we're talking about what the keys are ready to go into a game one of the lds that they have to go play the wild card game and use luis severino already we've already seen that they can they are susceptible against left handed pitching so if the play the red sox in the first round of the ds obviously david price see that's the thing that's a ticket prices lefthanded to tom like okay yeah they get shut out by trestle and they blow up david price both lefties different kinds left he's obviously it's going to come down to location and spa pitching but when it comes to the national league west lots lots of different ways i mean obviously lots of different combinations can be giants dodgers can giants can get up into the second wildcard or or whatever may have you mean the first wildcard isn't that far off either cubs or the first wildcard right now and they're only two games clear the phillies so i mean really the giants and dodgers are only three and a half back of that of the first place in the wildcard anyways so at all so whether they're going to go for that first place i mean looking at the.

"I mean he's been absolutely amazing this whole season has been pretty crazy me see i thirty to thirty five and save ops i mean everybody has a little blemishes but the blown saves but i mean that's why it's a lot of close games for the marlins mariners i mean the only have what are they fifty four and thirty one so he's saved over well over half of their games and he's he's been able to be that stalwart in in the bullpen that has been very good this whole season only i mean when you get when you get your started going eight innings obviously paxton has been very good eight he's aiding two three three nine eight headed to dc i mean they thing is they aren't missing robinson keynote and that's been the biggest prize for me in this whole run for the mariners is that they're staying healthy and they're not missing robertson connote they slid i think they're having a who's playing play in dee gordon was very easy addition i mean very easy move from back to his normal original position at second base he was moved obviously when he was traded over the marlins from the from the marlins he was meant to play center field for seattle what she did and then obviously canot gets the suspension and he goes and fills in right at second base like an easy little few right they're not missing and then you get horita in center field you could put they have a bunch they have a couple of different guys out there who can basically platoon center field which is fine teams do that because you have a ryan healy who's hitting them crazy i mean he's he's got can just looking at their lions right now he's only had two fifty two but he had a big big big weekend obviously and then you've got jeans girl who i love honestly love ben always been jeans gervais and actually bounced around a couple different teams now but finding a home in seattle becoming their shortstop has been a big deal for him he's in three thirty five dee gordon still great speed on on the base that got power in the middle of lineup with the hannigan crews and seger so they got a good a good catcher i mean they're not they're they're lineup is solid i mean you canot back when he goes back from the suspension it's like getting his free trade in like late august or whenever you whenever he's do back but i mean this is going to be a team that if they can stay healthy if they can stay like energized like an old is plane rise can get really long enough to travel a lot of miles but if you can stay energized stay engaged in if you're pitching stays where it is because obviously with mike leake nice little dish in chains paxton's to automatic they've automatic but he's been very good and then mark williams all says well king felix also so they've been able to figure it out what they rotate asian and then obviously getting the clutch hits when they want because i mean that's a lot of close games they've had thirty five opportunities for for as a safe games he's not thirty two of them and that's well oh well over half their wins for for the marlins from the mariners so whether they're going to catch them or astros i don't think that's the case that's not gonna happen astros just got swept anytime obey which is crazy i just think the the the way the raise matchup against them is really interesting but yeah the raise the raise are tied with eleven eleven days back of that second wildcard there tied with none other but the the the the los angeles angels anaheim angels are one game over five hundred forty three and forty two did come all way back down to the mean after starting so hot the aids have a better record the maze or forty six and thirty nine there they have their seven games over right now which is crazy and but.

"The part of the red sox and astros i can actually list you off the entire rotation of top my head for both those teams that can't really do it with many other teams because of the just the turnover and the injury issues we've had over the last of last few months or so i mean look at those mariners i love those mariners uniform something to wear 'em every home sunday game they were those blue the blue uniform with the blue hats and the blue piping instead of the navy piping got like that little switzerland i think there are also doing throw tile turn turn head the clock or whatever it is the the pre kind of the retro retro almost like the future jerseys with the red on them we saw back when they had junior griffey junior was wearing those you're going to go back and do that again all right that'll wrap it up for the segment league over the marriage a little bit talking about what's been making them click obviously having to deal with that robinson canot suspension hasn't really hindered them as they got mitch anger going corey southern cal secrets finally starting to sing swing it and then obviously having a d gordon is a really nice edition that's a good good move right there by the marriage could make a difference for them as he's taken over senatorial position is really hell down there for seattle or we're gonna come back and talk a little bit with the red sox we'll talk a little more but the mariners as well and probably the down back says they have bow themselves back in first place and then we'll go over the weekend the week coming up for nfl segment so everybody say didn't we will be right back.

"Face as we begin to wind down this undying never ending serious team preview episodes signed petach team is unsurprisingly stuck kind of in the middle of the seattle mariners all of the teams that we're talking about at this point in the series are stuck in the middle marriage is one of them and to talk about the mariners we are joined by van graphs zone meg rally hello hello are the mariners good or i should say are are the mariners anyway distinguished from for this season the athletics the rangers and the angels well they have james paxton don't have a show a tiny yeah i guess he's just bad can you imagine what mayor twitter there then like if he had been doing this as a mariner good good gravy no i mean they're older than some of those teams which is disconcerting if you're hoping for them to do fun and unexpected things they don't have a lot of great pitching which is sort of true of a lot of these guys who are lumped in the middle yeah there are more of them who we know from last year than this time last year there's been a lot less movement the roster so that's a good thing but yeah thing i think that the the main sort of thing that they have done is what they haven't done this off season which is going into this year it was expected that they needed to address some of their woes starting pitching because they used a shocking number of pitchers last year and had very poor pitching health some of which you know we might expect to be fluky but some of which is what happens when you get guys who are a little bit older in your hoping for maybe a return to form.
