Armenia Votes in Election Triggered by War Defeat

"Iran's neighbor to the north Armenia is also holding really significant elections this weekend. They're heading to the polls in snap parliamentary elections on Sunday to defuse a political crisis of the country following its defeat in last year's war with Azerbaijan over the territory of Nagorno Karabakh. Voters face a tough choice between an embattled prime minister and a former strongman president. The BBC's Ron Dmitry reports campaigning in the North eastern Armenian town of oblivion, the incumbent union asks several 100 of his supporters gathered under the hot sun. If Armenia has a future that that guy Yes, The people apply for a man to me put up on that. When we say future, we mean you because you are the future of Armenia. You are going to build it with your own hands because you are the pillar. You have proved it in the last seven months in November last year, a six week war with Azerbaijan over Nagorno Karabakh. Ended in humiliation for medium the country lost swathes of territory and up to 4000 servicemen died. Many of them young recruits. That is a huge number for a small nation of three million. John Dewey's Persepctive of American Education and Stalin's Education

"He came back to the United States and he wrote Uh, in a fairly popular left wing, progressive, so called magazine. Called the New Republic. Then he wrote in the New Republic. How impressive Russia's educational system was how it was unifying the country. How the instruction was the same from one classroom to the other. How the instruction had a purpose, not just to learn language and science and mathematics and so forth. But the support the commune that is the state that was being developed. Of course by Stalin. And he was the man who had the greatest influence in American education to this day. To this day, and journalists like Jay Rosen, who is a professor out of New York and teaches journalism and others. Point to John Dewey is the great hero. John Dewey, who destroyed American Education opened the door wide to what's taking place. Today. He is the founding father of what's taking place today. As people will learn again when they read the book, and so again, your experience in the Soviet Union is very, very important. People need to understand. That we need to listen to people like Tatiana. They lived under the iron fist on the other side of the Iron Curtain. And they see similarities and the reason they see similarities is because there are similarities. And the fact that the American media has let down the American people. For more than a decade, and especially now. Is the sort of thing that always happens because when push comes to shove The media. The American media is weak. Predictable. Ideological Thank you for your call, my friend. Excellent. I'll be right back.

A Tour of Turkish Markets

"Joined by turkish tour. Guide lally sermon iran. Bali thank you for inviting gets a pleasure now first of all when we're in the town of konia i know from my experience taking groups around people get a little bit like an anxious. It seems a little more conservative. Women are more covered up into town like this described the atmosphere in cornea compared to a place like izmir or ankara. Well as you just put into words. It's little bit more conservative. But what's attract people's attention is not the conservatives off the town being a conservative is not a bad thing. It's just the personal understanding of how you want to practice your life and your religion. The reason i'm saying is that muslim women prefer if they are developed. They prefer to cover up but in different religions. People don't or may or may not need to show their face with what they wear because there's a visual aspect to it. It attracts attention. Otherwise cornea is not any different than any more conservative city anywhere in the world. Okay so different Groups in different religions will have their women wearing hats and their men wearing beers visual indicator. Then you to said if there was not you would not notice. A life is not different in konya than anywhere else in turkey. It's just men have more beards and women have more scarfs. That's okay we're going to go to the market now when you step into a market like anywhere. It's sort of a cultural scavenger hunt and you have a chance to learn about the culture from the market if you were going to take one of our listeners into the marketing konia. What are some of the things you would see. That would give you a better understanding own loved the marketing. First of all. What i love is that it's was a market two thousand years ago. One thousand five hundred years ago one thousand years ago five hundred years ago and today it's still at the same place in the same layout and more or less. Probably the items carried in the market are the same.

"Think about your favourite smells. I love vanilla and cinnamon or men rosemary stuff. That smells good. Fresh maybe delicious. I just love anything that smells like grapefruit or one of my favorite sense is eucalyptus. All my favorite smile is lavender but favorite smells tend to be part of a bigger picture of things and people. We care about fond memories. So maybe you love the smell of fresh tar because it reminds you of the freshly tarred and perfectly smooth street where you and your childhood friends went rollerblading. Especially in the summer when it's really hot in the sun is just like boiling that street. You would smell the tar. I like the smell of firewood. And anything hosted like s'mores tiki torches. Those smells remind me of situations where i'm around. Good company or the smell of freshly cut grass. Brings you back to your first job mowing lawns with simple. Satisfying wendy's outside smell is a powerful trigger for memories like being in my grandmother's tomato garden in the summertime and remembering her name her perfume but the spell of the tomato leaves us. I think it comes from the fact that i learned in the very beginning to put a system to the game to treat it like a business and to approach studying with a certain kind of intensity and i think that that ability to treat the game like a business is what helped me in the beginning but a lot of people did that right. I think what else helped me was. Just that like men. I like it the the pastor you know. I think that that's another thing i think. Lsu tennessee down the line so it feels like manning that name really is synonymous with football in the south. And we'll be for a while. Oh no i mean we will probably see another manning in the nfl which is a tremendous amount of pressure to put on a sophomore. Because maybe he wants to be a marine biologist. You know who knows one of the things. That are gina. Livia or really good at. And i think cooper is good at because he's watched is to not let any of our fascination with their last name so to find its way into the actual family dynamic and decision making process. So maybe archie. Manning is an nfl quarterback maybe he becomes the ceo of tidewater moraine. You know maybe. He is a schoolteacher. You know who knows so. I just wanna understand. Also right when archie. The elder archie is watching young arch on friday nights. Like tonight when arch is going to be playing in his second playoff game of the season. What is archie. think when. He's watching him. is he. In this sort of nostalgic looking back sort of a motor as he deeply invested looking forward to the football career that arch may have in front of them too. I think he is fully inhabiting friday. Night i mean. I think you know the these are olivia jokes. But she should've kept track. About how many football games. She's going to but they are all in a new york. Giants super bowl is not more important than tonight's playoff game. They got some business to take care of on the field tonight. It doesn't sound like they're like winding down. Archie livia interesting. They are in the process of putting that big house in the garden district where they famously raised all those boys for sale and downsizing to a condo a couple of blocks away they joked that middle son peyton is the most sentimental and this just really really bothered him and they told him that no he. You know yes. They were aware that he was very rich and no he could not buy it. Because what the hell would he do. House and the guard district in new orleans. But you know that's a big house it's made for a family that's growing and that's not them anymore right. There's this passage that you wrote in your story that stems from when you asked archie if he had anything his dad's that qaeda holding onto and i was wondering if you.

"Follow that. Again, he will be tested daily as for the game on the field, which as of right now is set to continue a situation of strength versus strength and something has to give according to ESPN analytic system. We the fourth time since two thousand five when the number one offense and the number one defense in efficiency rankings will face off the previous three times by the way that happened they were all national championship games. So Ron, this is of note, and I'll ask you what do you expect to be the deciding factor? Well first of all, let's hope. Nick. Sabin. Gets gets healthy very very soon but this is a bad week for Nick Sabin not to be out there on the practice field when Alabama trying to get their defense in order and they're playing Georgia. That's what I think the real matchup. The real key is the Alabama offense against that Georgia great defense and Alabama has a wide receivers that could make the big difference in this game you know they. Are Loaded John Michie, devante Smith, and Jalen Waddell are outstanding. They're the only three receivers. The only team to have three receivers with more than two hundred and fifty yards receiving and two touchdowns each it's outstanding. You think about what you get with someone like water. He's the guy that yards after catch he is fantastic, and then you think about their ability to get deep and the screen passes everything they do is a problem and Luke's I will. Tell you this and you know this very very well, most teams have won good cover corner Georgia might have to but nobody nobody has three to deal with what Alabama's bring in the passing game and that's why I think the key to the game is that matchup for Alabama or you reference the defense and listen I think that album will play really good defense this week because George's offense and their approach is kind of what Alabama would prefer. To defend, they don't want to be spread out thin and want to have a dynamic athlete at quarterback. They'd like to play this game in a phone booth and they'd like for it to be physical. I. Don't think there's a trend starting on defense for Alabama. It was one game clemson did that doom and the national championship old missed it it to him a few years back and they lost the game. So the sky is not falling in Tuscaloosa. What I will say this about George offensively they got to rely on that offensive line and Stetson Bennett former walk on cannot choose this week to play like a walk on he's going to have to play really really good. I expect Alabama their feelings are hurt. They got stung a little bit and I think they'll come out and play really really well, and that side of the football you're all in on a defense that gave forty five. Wow I'm impressed me I'll listen hey, listen what usually happens when Alabama either loses. Or doesn't play well. The next week they come back and and it's hell on wheels. I'd feel more. Out there on the practice field. Off. The sideline. I know this the sky is not falling in Tuscaloosa I would agree but tackling would be a good idea. I would also agree with an all. Week. All. We'll talk to background.

"It's February second. Two Thousand Fourteen at Metlife Stadium in New Jersey Peyton Peyton. Manning is warming up hours before the game much has been made about the first quote cold weather super bowl but it's an unusually warm winter evening in the northeast forty nine degrees at kickoff. It's been less than two years since ally. Manning won his second Super Bowl in the house. That Payton Belt and now now. The roles of the manning brothers are reversed. Payton is now trying to win his second ring on. Eli Home Field. This time against the Seattle seahawks talks. peyton looks over across the field and see some of the seahawks defense warming up. He's been spending countless hours watching tape there legion of boom in defense and he can tell that they're confident nothing. I haven't seen before. Though thinks Peyton as he rifles warmup tosses to his receivers and Denver Starts Super Bowl forty eight with the football. PT runs out to take the first snap. And he's feeling confident. But the broncos get off off to a rocky start against the walls of the end zone the safety to start this. The safety on the Games I play is the fastest score in super double history. Just twelve seconds in and it's a glimpse of what will feel like one of the longest days of Payton's career in the second quarter already trailing fifteen nothing the legion of boom strikes again thing gets up West. No flags touchstone throughout the game. The broncos never find their rhythm in the end they get blown out forty three to eight. In one of the most lopsided super bowls ever Payton has now fallen to one and two in the biggest game of the year as the confetti falls he walks around congratulating the Seattle players. He's putting on a good game face. He is crushed in between shakes his confetti flies past his face he wonders if he just blew his last shot at glory his body it can only take so much. He's mentally and physically drained but Payton knows he needs to have a little left in the tank if he ever wants to to catch Tom Brady in the race for rings. "Peyton. Manning is standing by himself at Miami OPA LOCKA Executive Airport on March. Sixth Two thousand twelve. It's a small facility used by superwealthy for their private jets. He's pacing looking at his phone reflective in anxious it's similar to the emotions. He wants felt standing outside outside the colts. GM's office before telling him if you don't pick me I'M GONNA kick your ass for the next fifteen years. Manning is at the airport because colts owner. Jim irsay is giving the legendary quarterback a ride back to Indianapolis on his private jet. Payton knows that it's going to be an emotional channel. Two and a half hour flight back to indy. So does her say peyton missed the entire two thousand eleven season just weeks after signing a long term contract extension manning collected twenty six million dollars that was due to him on his contract in year. One I say insisted on it without Peyton under senator though the season for the colts took on the theme of suck for luck in reference to the team losing enough in order to land the number one overall draft picks unlikely Andrew Luck. Luck is a can't miss quarterback prospect from Stanford who has a lot in common with manning luck a two time heisman finalists. Let's play never. Winter is also the son of a former. NFL quarterback he's also a natural leader and Ernest student of the Game Mo Scouts. GM's comes around the league. Consider luck to the best prospect since peyton manning with a lot of mixed emotions earth say has approved of the decision. Listen to select luck number one overall in the draft. Signaling the official end to the Manning era in Indianapolis and painting gets it. He knows this wasn't an easy decision for say. He was mere feet from the owner. When I say cried in the locker room after the team's final regular season game sensing even even then that they're incredible? Fourteen year ride was over. This is more than just business for Peyton and her say they feel like family to each other but they both know that everything is going to change as soon as they land the plane that they're now boarding as the plane takes off or say confirms what they both both know has to happen. Peyton will be released. They're taking luck as the colts. begrudgingly move on the timing makes sense. It's luck is a generational talent available to the colts with manning still a health uncertainty peyton. Smart he understands the predicament. He can't can't tell her. Say not to draft walk. He himself admires the kid and knows that franchise. QB's throw on trees earth say can't even bring himself himself to say the words. I'm letting you go. It's too emotional. But they both know they have to part ways Peyton tells him I understand understand Jim. It's not your decision my decision. It's just circumstances. The plane lands. Both men have tears in their eyes. They know tomorrow Gerald. They'll have to make the news public Payton's only relief is that he gets to express it in his own words the next day. He gets his chance. I've been a colt for almost all of my adult life but I guess in life and in sports we all know that nothing lasts forever times change circumstances change and that's the reality of playing in the NFL. I just a few words will have to say say a few words. I want to address to colts. Fans everywhere thank you very much from the bottom of my heart truly have enjoyed being your quarterback it could easily be confused for a retirement speech or a Eulogy Eulogy. But it's not. It's more like a graduation. Speech and Peyton Manning's next chapter is going to add a lot to his resume. Sports wars is brought to you in part by Zoom. Zoom didn't invent video conferencing. It's December twenty second two thousand thirteen in Houston Texas axis peyton. Manning is enjoying the most dominant season of his NFL career. This is his second year under center for the Denver Broncos and now he's taking taking aim at the record books Denver's general manager is another legendary quarterback John elway. He recruited Peyton to the Mile High City to get the Broncos over the hump and maybe expand elway's championship legacy elway was a bit skeptical about Manning's health but this season has quieted any doubts with a big road game. Today against the Texans Payton can eclipse five thousand passing yards in a single season for the first time in his brilliant career and he needs four touchdown passes to surpass Tom. Brady's NFL record for most season which Brady's set way back in two thousand and seven manning has been red hot all year with six separate four touchdown games just this season alone with under five minutes left in the game. He gets his chance to make history. Peyton froze Thomas. There Thomas with a touchdown and there's the record move over Tom Brady. That chair belongs to peyton manning this year the thirty seven year old Peyton manning sets the NFL single season in passing yardage record with five thousand. Four hundred seventy seven yards an absurd average of three hundred forty two yards a game. He also finished is the season. With a remarkable and record setting fifty five touchdown passes and more importantly. He's on a collision course to meet. Tom Brady and the Patriots in the playoffs with a legitimate chance to settle some scores for the whole manning family. It's an unseasonably warm winter day in Denver on January nineteenth two thousand fourteen the football gods and CBS executives have their dream scenario peyton manning and the broncos are hosting Tom Brady and the Patriots in the AFC championship. It's her the thirty-seven-year-old Payton has found the Fountain of Youth and Denver Somehow playing better football than he did before four neck surgeries. It's hard to believe at this point but it's been nine in years since Tom Brady last one super bowl two of his losses came against Eli Manning and now Payton wants in the family fund. This is the fifteenth. Fifteen matchup of their career. Brady is ten four and has a three game winning streak in the rivalry but today's championship. Game gives Peyton a chance to even the playoff record at two apiece. Though it off of was most people consider to be the greatest regular season performance by any quarterback in the history of the League manning and the broncos control the pace early Payton is carving up the New England secondary with precise passes all over the field. The shouts shouts of Omaha Omaha by number eighteen in Bronco. Orange are typically followed by another completion doc. Staff in the third quarter Peyton puts the game out of reach. Give any to study lights. The broncos take twenty to three lead but unlike other matchups in this rivalry there is no thrilling. Comeback Payton's Broncos coast have a suffocating defense and it keeps brady and the New England offense in check manning's Gaudy numbers in the regular season. Continue as he throws for over four hundred yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Soon mercifully for the PATS. The game is over eight manning. The DENVER broncos are heading to super bowl forty eight to represent the American football conference and Tom Brady goes home. Peyton Beats Brady for for the second time in the postseason and will officially play in the Super Bowl for a third time in his career. He can become the first starting quarterback ever to win the Lombardi trophy with two separate.

"Its June. Two thousand eleven in Indianapolis Peyton. Manning is on the weight bench at his home doing something. He doesn't exactly love the bench press. He's doing multiple reps with lightweight. And it's putting a scowl on his face. Something feels off just last month. Payton had neck surgery three to repair a herniated disc. This workout is part of his Rehab. But it's not him. This whole process has thrown him off his routine and I'm taking them away from football. There have been many aches and pains in his long career. Plenty of heartbreaking losses to end seasons as well but this is the first time time he's ever felt like he can't even play the game he loves and to someone as obsessed with the game as he is. That's terrifying as the X.. Hails through another few reps on the bench. Payton is replaying in his mind. The colts last matchup against Tom Brady and the pats in November another loss. He's now four and eight against Brady. The record motivates him but more than anything. It pisses him off off as he adds a little more weight to the bench. He hears his phone chime. It's a text from who else but Brady. It's an innocent since seeming message. Hey man just checking in hope. You're getting better each day. These types of texts have been coming in regularly this off season from the Patriots. It's quarterback Peyton did the same when Brady was rehabbing in two thousand eight after all the number of people who can relate to the enormous expectations that come with all pro quarterback status is pretty small so the two. QB's confide in each other but Payton is always a little cautious in the back of his mind he wonders how much should he really share with his biggest rival. Peyton text back working on it. Man You got that. MVP this year. But I still got you there. You got me on rings though. These texts are like their chats on the field. They've joked about their dads. It's becoming friends over the years. Archie and Tom Senior had been breaking down their sons play together. Like two DADS on the sidelines of a Pop Warner Game Peyton and Brady have spent time together away from football as well playing golf meeting for dinners and texting like this regularly they talk quarterbacking and love breaking down the nuances of the game. They pick each other's brains peyton stretches between bench press reps he could. It used. Brady's take today. He knows what it's like to return to form after a major injury. Payton is now genuinely worried about his body holding up he. He knows that he's GonNa Miss Real time with this neck injury if he ever even makes it back. The Colts Front office is even more worried about Payton's health than he he is but they continue to work through negotiations for a new deal for the franchise. QB even during the off season lockout over collective bargaining that's now consumed assumed. The League Payton is appreciative of the way the team is handling colts. GM Bill Polian. WHO DRAFTED PEYTON number? One overall a decade earlier there has been particularly kind during the process navigating difficult conversations and private as peyton moves from the inclined to the decline bench sweating sweating through his rehab routine. He smiles about the latest conversation. He had with Polian yesterday the GM told him that he should one hundred percent beginning As much money as Tom Brady does but Payton isn't concerned with his already huge paycheck. He told Polian. figure out how I can make less than Brady Radian put together the best possible team around me more than anything. Peyton wants to win another Super Bowl in Indianapolis he grew up with money money and has earned millions more. What he wants now more than ever is rings and at least as many as Tom Brady has payton then winces? Is he towels off his face. He's dripping sweat. While his neck throbs with pain the phone dings again. Another message from Brady. Peyton reaches for it then hesitates and put some other weight on each side of the bar. No time for texts. He thinks it's time to put in work but after the set he can't help but to look at his phone. It reads hang in there. Buddy see you on the field in October Dude. What lies is ahead? These next few months for their relationship and for Payton's career. Nobody saw coming sports. Wars is brought to you by capital. One you know how it feels when you've saved enough for that long awaited home edition now. Imagine saving enough for an addition on that edition. That's the feeling with capital one. It doesn't need her testimony. Quash the subpoena. Don't make her testify the court dan. That's sounds convincing to me but i don't and basically said look <hes> grand. Juries are entitled to a broad range range of of evidence. You know whatever the prosecutor wants to bring before them and if the prosecutor thinks that the <hes> reliability of manning's testimony is significant piece of information than they're entitled to that information and we want to hear you're the grand jury is entitled to hear from chelsea manning and she is therefore required to testify and so the specific order again this order order was then oh and i should add by the way the the court after ordering her <hes> to comply with the subpoena then held an oral argument. That transcript is sealed. I can't get access to it but the court's order has been unsealed right so parts of this have been unredacted parts of this have have been released <hes> the documents that are available like i said i'm going to link in the show notes on may sixteenth the court said in open open court it why not an open enclosed court in a in a in a closed courtroom <hes> but before the judge <hes> chelsea manning said that she was going to quote persist in the refusal to comply with this court order to testify and <hes> and the court said okay well. You've you've told us you're not going to comply <hes>. We don't think that you have just cause to to disobey the subpoena we want you to comply and so this court is going to hold you in civil contempt and here's the text of the order and again this will help make it make it make sense <hes> she is remanded to the custody of the attorney general that is to say she is in jail until such time as she purchase herself of contempt right pitches his which means this is before the grand jury old timey stuff like she's a witch or something kind of as well. That's what that so. That's language means to purchase off of contempt to do the thing that will bring you into compliance that makes you no longer in contempt so until she either testifies vice before the grand jury quote or for the life of the grand jury but in no event longer than eighteen months and of quote so again again if and when this grand jury concludes that will also terminate chelsea manning's stay in prison it will not terminate germinate this civil it will it will terminate the civil sanctions <hes> which i'm about to explain <hes> they will stop running but she is also being fined. She is being fined five hundred dollars a day for the first sixty days and two thousand dollars a day for everyday free day thereafter. That's pretty extensive it. I have seen civil contempt sanctions that are that high. I was involved in a case in which a witness who refused to show up for deposition <hes> was was <hes> held in civil contempt and was fined two thousand dollars a day <hes> until he showed up but <hes> but that's gonna start running <hes> it is not clear to me whether that will run retroactively to may sixteenth sixteenth or whether.

"So you sitting out there in the worst possible. Look at this leg position. Jon Gruden like I n not draft is due for number one, pick you bomb right here. See my pray, Derek Carr. Come to me, I know is going down right now, and this is the worst thing if you're a raider fan to see over and over again, Derek Carr, going down for the sec and Frank Clark, Frank tank, your number one that dude of the week, Michigan in the house, Michigan player, former Walker, rain, I, that was also myself, it's now let's move from some dues to some duds, the New York Giants at one in five, the giants had been absolute disaster. So far with auto l. Beckham Julia calling out the team in the media and ally manning looking over by the day. It's gotten so bad that owner, John Mara threw himself into the fray yesterday. Calling out Odell for talking too much and actually come into allies defense. We still believe in you. You know, everybody needs to do their jobs in order for us to be successful and right now, and that's not happening. I know he's the punching bag right now, but a lot of guys need to play better when one, five, it's not just I'm the crazy person that agrees with John. Mara, I'm not jumping off the lab manning bandwagon just yet their offense of line is a problem. The lack of protection is a problem I get. We're John Mars coming from with that blocking up front. Johny United's, Roger, stall back and Peyton Manning couldn't do anything. Well, Lou. Well, Lou. If alarm manage the punching bag than John Moro's punch drunk because the way that he's talking about this team, if I'm sitting there if I'm playing well on his team, if I'm saquon Barkley or anybody else, I'm like, we need names and numbers coach. You need start pointing fingers. We need to hear that from up top owner. But if you're not, it's a smart play. I think he's already saying I'm not going to touch the ally manning conversation ever. Again, he got burned last year when he busy lie manning and the public backlash in criticism made him say he live is our star once again, but I think behind closed doors, the decision of the made allies going to quietly go off into the sunset. But before that I am not touching that Hornets nest and I'm not going to go out there and chastise Eli manning will agree with you, but was the owner sanded not the head coach, everybody speaking on the medics, that for the guy that should be the leader of the team that we heard from on Alexa. That for the fact that he said, we still believe in ELA, a demand or something was told him when he took the job. Like to me, the owner doesn't have a choice, but to say, we believe in Eli, what else can you say, oh, he's a bum. We need to get some, who's he going to get? It's too late in the season. He got to ride that wave in let you make his twenty, whatever million dollars and ride off into the sunset. And I've always been hard on the Manning's, but Peyton Manning, I could never stay when he played, but he was much better than I ever thought. I don't think Eli is is good. As the hype will give him credit for as advertise, right? So I apologize the pain, but Eli is what he what we thought. So ally retires, you apologized to him to, okay, didn't make it. I mean, he's Roggio junior right now. He's the old Roy Jones junior, we are still holding onto nostalgia of him being a two time SuperBowl MVP, but you can't play any more. He hasn't been able to play really over the past three or four years and odeal Beckham junior really saved his career when he was drafted at twenty four team because the spark that offense. But when you really look at him, he's a limited passer. He can't push the ball down the field. They can't really open up the office because the things that is playmakers around him do will he can't do. And when you look at him, he's scared to death for the pike. Whenever it gets close, he falls. I know his brother paid manning, they did..
