Apple Must Allow Other Forms of in-App Purchase, Rules Judge
"Apples expected to real a new iphone today but the biggest update may be in its app store. That's because of a ruling in the epoch versus apple lawsuit which came down in apple's favor with one big exception. A judge ruled that apple does not have to reduce the fees. It charges developers in its app stores. It's currently from fifteen to thirty percent. Fortnight epochs gay may. We're maine's banned from the app store. However because they broke their contract over the judge allowed the divers can use a non apps or payments to get around the apple store fees. That's a big change. It's a big win. Epoch still filed an appeal because it didn't declare apple monopolised etc etc. It's a really interesting ruling and to me. Apple did when they were going in this direction anyway with their previous settlement the week before and more gherman who writes really well about apple was like look. It's not that much money for them. They were going in this direction. Anyway and most people will probably still pick. Apple is the payment system. So what do you think about mark. Gherman swanee guess is your dog walker now anyways Look this was. This is an interesting case of the media deciding. Wouldn't it be more interesting to say. Epic fail for apple right and the reality was it was probably more of a win for our it distills down to it. A lot of anti-trust lawyers on both sides of the issue will say that it being a monopoly as an illegal. It's abusing monopoly power. And what they've said is okay you've minder standing of the ruling is the judge has basically said you've invested a lot. You've done a good job. People get utility from this consumers. Clearly love it. They don't feel angry that they you know they. They have to wait for someone to come installed their cable between the hours of one and five and three months because you have a regulated monopoly. But what they've said is its monopoly abuse. You can continue to charge thirty percent. You can continue to have somewhere between fifty five and eighty five percent market share depending on how you calculated. But we can't do is when someone's downloaded the app. Then decide that all tail activity within the app. You get a commission on their saw that as monopoly
Terry Tempest Williams on Her New Book "The Hour of Land"
"Terry tempest williams invites us to celebrate the land and the people. You'll meet at a variety of national parks across the united states in her book. The hour of land. She describes the park. She's visited as breathing spaces each with a unique personality that deserve our patronage our respect and our protection by the way our conversation was recorded before the global pandemic. Terry it's good to have you with us. Thank you read your book. The our land takes us not to the obvious parks but it takes us to some of the less famous parks. You chose about a dozen parks to introduce to us why these parks why not win at the grand and famous ones. Would you believe me if i told you that i saw this as a dinner party. You know my mother was a great hostess and she always said you know. Pick your dinner parties very carefully because who knows what will come out of them so you know here. We have fifty nine national parks in our country. How to choose a dozen. So i really did envision it as dinner party i knew who the heads of the table would be my mother park which would be grand teton national park. The other end of the table. I knew it would be canyon. Lands national park where we live closely to. I could count on them then. I thought all right who's gonna be on the other end of the table holding the space that are reliable and for me. It was a canadian national park in maine and teddy roosevelt national park. In north dakota. I had been to the many times and they were trustworthy. Then i thought okay. Who are the dream guests that i would want that. I don't know. But i know other people who do and we can bring them to the table and i thought of big bend national park. I thought of gates of the arctic national park and effigy mounds. And i thought those were my dream guests
Hippies Were More Conservative Than the Rockefeller Conservatives Were
"There. There was this aspect of the hippie era that we as conservatives made fun of and it's it's understandable because some of their demands were so outrageous and especially when it came to their embrace of the sexual revolution. But there was this part of the hippie era. Were the hippies. Were actually more conservative than the rockerfeller conservatives were not on social conservative not on social issues but on issues that came to maintaining a certain way of life it was the rockerfeller bush. Republicans from kennebunkport maine. That'll you know what it's not a big deal all of a sudden if our kids are staring at screens for seven hours a day who cares as long as our taxes are low and the hippies that were in the one thousand nine hundred nineteen seventy s. They were the ones that were talking about. How technology could become a massive existential threat to human existence.
What Are the Newsom Recall Polls Saying?
"Hey everybody. Welcome to this episode of the charlie kirk show with us. Today's a friend of mine and he's rarely ever wrong. In fact we had him coming on our program leading up to the election and he got almost all of his predictions correctly. Richard harris from the people's pundit and also we had you on for the georgia thing and you're the one that early said. Hey we got a problem in georgia and you're right so we're going to talk about california polls and so all right richard. Let's cut through all of the nonsense. Yes the way. It works in california for all of our friends in maine and massachusetts and florida and south carolina. It's a two part question. Yes or no recall gavin newsom and if yes then who let's start with the yes or no. Do you think that the yeses are going outnumber the nose. Yes we pulled it a couple of weeks back and we had no ahead by a little bit charlie. But let me leave this with you. The caveat here is that. I thought my share of the you know is part of poland. I thought my share of the white vote was a little bit high california's usually forty five fifty percent tops and did see other pollsters. That had him in the sixties. If you look at who's voting right now. This is why democrats are nervous. The electorate is very white. And it's and it's much older so if if the electorate and we had them at fifth we whites at fifty five but we still had the age breakdown to be pretty young so that could a two point advantage could easily be swamped demographic difference like that the problem newsom has then i was just saying this before he needs white liberals and asian voters to come out and they are the least likely to want to vote. Weitz were over. Eighty percent certain to vote when we pull them And asia voters were in the fifty s. So it. I mean it really. It goes to show you got a close race can turn into a nailbiter either way
The Inspiring Story of Margaret E. Knight
"So margaret louise night. She was a prolific american inventor of machines and mechanisms for a variety of industrial everyday purposes. Margaret was nicknamed maddie mit. She lived with her widowed mother and older brothers. Charlie and jim in a little house in york maine. she was born in eighteen. Thirty eight by the way so after her father passed away mattie had inherited his toolbox and she liked to think of things that could be made with these tools and she drew them in a little notebook that she labeled my inventions. Mattie demonstrated knack for tools and mentioned from an early age making toys kites sleds and household items in as little girl. She preferred to play with woodworking tools. Instead of dolls saying that quote the only thing she wanted whereas a jack knife gimblett and pieces of wood. She knew she wanted good for her so when she was eleven. Maddie's finley moved to manchester new hampshire to work in the textile mills there and so matty was going to continue going to school only going so far as a complete her elementary school education and she got to know the head engineer there while wandering around the grounds after school waiting for her family to be done with their like fourteen to eighteen hour shifts. Sure textile mills. Yeah including like her twelve year old brother and fourteen so at age twelve. She started working the mill herself and aloom ow function and injured a worker So it turns out that one of the leading causes of serious injuries at the mill that she had observed was the propensity of the steel-tipped flying shuttles so those were manipulated by workers to unite the left in the warp threads in their weaves. I'm so these shuttles would come free of their looms and they would like shoot off the machines high-velocity even at like the slightest employee error. So like there were people dying from this. There are people like you know basically like you're getting almost shot. Yeah basically tipped metal thing like flying off a machine you know so it was really dangerous and so matty what she did. She created a guard. That would stop the shuttle from coming off of the machine if it malfunctioned. So like the exact details of this device have kind of been lost to history but mentions of it came out throughout published stories of her work and her Mentions articles that will get into so again because this was the mid nineteenth century. And why would anybody document what they actually did anyway. So workman who installed these types of guards all the looms and all the males in manchester. So this sounds like a big deal. She clearly didn't make any money for sure. You know maybe save some lives so after she turned eighteen. Mattie left manchester for better opportunities She worked in several different factories on new england along with other short-term technical jobs too so that she could keep

We Need Manly Churches Preaching Biblical Masculinity
"It's amazing to me that you know. We are coming to a place where it is only like great churches. That are pushing this message out there. The whole culture has become feminized and confused. I mean it's obvious that people are just i mean. Most people understand that the culture is nuts. Like you need to be encouraged folks. I forgive you think the culture is nuts. You know what you are right. And i'm here to affirm you they've all gone nuts the only place where you seem to be able to find sanity Is in certain churches. I was I mentioned you tim. I was up in ken graves. Church in bangor maine. I was at jack. Hibs church and chino hills california. They're few that are particularly manly. And i thought men just gravitate toward that cause in their ideas churches. Kind of like it's a. It's a woman's thing or or something like that. I really think that this message that you have in your book take it back. It just comes out of the bible and it's it's kind of like solving for excellent algebra quesion right. I mean everything else goes away. We're in a culture now where you really can't find this anymore. We don't have a lot of healthy masculinity in the culture in our movies and tv either at it is toxic masculinity portrayed or is wimpy non masculinity but this healthy idea of biblical masculinity which father's bless their children and husbands bless their wives and live self-sacrificial early and use their strength to protect those. I mean so beautiful. i think more and more. We're seeing that in churches and i. I predict that. We're gonna see revival on this issue when a culture becomes as sick as ours is on this issue. Men are looking for truth. They know in their gut. Right and wrong on this. And i'm just i'm excited that you're talking about it. You're not the only one but this is The book is take it back. dr tim. Clinton forward by darrell

The US Embassy Flying a BLM Flag Is Deeply Un-American
"But i. I just want to get one comment your thoughts on this idea of our embassies flying. The black lives matter flag. Could you imagine if under your direction as something like that happened. I mean how is this even allowed under state department protocol. so there's a bit of history there When i was a member of congress. I traveled to an embassy and saw the Gay pride flag flying from the embassy. And i was infuriated and so i wrote a letter at that twin towers. That's all i could really do. But then i became secretary state. And when i became secretary of state when those embassies worked for me i made very clear. We're gonna fly one flag from the flagpole at an american embassy. That was going to be the american flag. Charlie thought taken away their last nickel The the consternation the lawsuits the threats were staggering. And so it was truly disheartening to see at the maine state department facility in washington the main flagpole that is the center point for american diplomacy that the whole world would see the picture and they would know what they were looking at there and foggy bottom to watch the fbi. Employees fly from that flagpole. was just tragic This is an organization that is deeply against american marxist organization who don't believe in the very things our diplomats are supposed to be doing around the world and for this administration to have permitted at the fly from an american flag pole. I didn't even. I'm not sure have adjective. That can accurately describe how how disheartening west to see and how un-american it felt to me too overtly political too i mean they say it's not political but of course it is. It's deeply political. This is an organization of left yet and this is an organization to which many in the democrat party have pledged failty So yeah no. This was not only not only political but it was deeply inconsistent with the values set of american equivalent. That we used on our show is what if every state department flag flew in. Nra flag
Businesses Are Reopening Across the U.S., Especially Where Vaccine Rates Are Higher
"It's pretty clear. The bigger businesses in this economy are doing alright. Earning season has been proof enough of that but consumers feeling good as we are and having cash as we do and being vaccinated as many but not enough of us are is especially good news for small and medium sized businesses. That got hammered last year and a lot of them are coming back. That's according to new data from yelp. The company reports the second quarter of the year april through june had the fastest paced of business reopening since last spring. Lead as you might imagine by restaurants and retailers with home improvement and auto repair not far behind then also as marketplace's mitchell hartman reports a record number of new businesses opening up something like fifteen to twenty percent of small businesses likely didn't survive the pandemic but those that did are reopening at a frenetic pace says justin norman head of data science at yelp over sixty thousand businesses reopened which is the highest volume reopenings in the last year. And yelp find something interesting about where the business buzz. Strongest distinct correlation between the vaccination rate and vaccination completion in an area and the number reopenings and consumer interest so more yelp searches and pictures and reviews of stores and restaurants in places like maine vermont. Connecticut. new york where there's less vaccination. There's less consumer interest so places like tennessee alabama mississippi but also some places in the west such as arizona. Vaccination rates are unfortunately low.

It was down in Garfield and 10600 the one okay. Yeah and It's you know, what was on the leased land and I dropped out of it three years to three years. With the idea what had a generator and you know, would you had to carry water know? Well, no spring had to carry water and I'm still working and had to go to a job. I mean, I'm still working now and but now I don't have to go anywhere. I just work on a computer and a telephone but I said by the time I get this Camp fixed up I'll be too old. I don't have enough time. So yeah, I started looking for some place that had electric Palm where you could work out of you know, yeah, and I ended up buying this cab and then then it took me. I just sold my old took me seven. From 20. I bought this 2013 sold my old cabin in 29 took me six years to sell my account now. It's getting too crowded here. And there's some I was never here or will you sold it to a Trapper? Yeah, but he's not allowed up here and I'm going down there. We're going to have a boundary but No, I don't know if it's you know, covid-19 related or not. But there's so many people here in the summer. It seems to be especially this summer. Yeah, there's more I'm spent more time here this summer than I've ever have before and so now Sniffing around some camps like fifty miles in yeah, you can't go any further north so much further unless you get a get a visa to get into Canada exactly. I mean you you start getting and you go anyw and you're out you don't have power. But yeah, so anyway, I'm going to I'll be here for a while. I get an idea for a camp for you and we'll talk about it after we get done place. I just scoped out recently. They're area that I want to I'm going to trap this year. But so you took what was your impression when you when you first got here and you were bear bear hunting and and then you started thinking about trapping and and how the trapping differs from from, Pennsylvania to here. Well, the big difference is you know with the North Maine Woods being I don't know how many million Acres three and half behind Gates. Yeah. I mean once you get through the gate I can do whatever I want to do and don't have to worry about permission and You know beyond somebody strap on or getting in someone's way and but the thing that impressed me was. There's you know, it seems like beavers King up here. We used to be everybody's Beaver trapping if I ran into a Woodcutter out in the woods, you'd say you'd be I'd say I am dropping. He said you Beaver trapping I said no, but like when I ten years ago when I started up here, I didn't know anybody that was Trapping Coyotes. Yeah. Well now everybody up here wants to trap tyoes. There's coyote Trappers. I can find half a dozen right around here. But anyway, No, the the reason I'm here is because that 3.2 million Acres. Hey if my friend up the lake here, Dave Farnham wants to trap diodes. I just drive 20 miles past him and yep and even between a two of you. There's still a lot of ground that ain't covered. Yeah, so it's a lot of land good access and you know the I should maybe knock on wood, but Nobody's ever told any of my stuff up here. Well, somebody did steal two of my traps one time, you know in deer season they I had. I had some 1 and 1/2 coils set at a bear bait on drags and some deer hunter must have walked into the bear baits all might to track but that's the only thing I ever lost. I have had maybe a dozen coyotes shot in the traps, but nobody ever taught them. All right, that's it for tonight's episode. Thanks for listening and hope you enjoyed that as much I did love talking to you Old-Timers like Bush they got a lot of experience and it's fun to see them still out there trapping. It gives me a great deal of Happiness knowing that when I am double my age, I can still be out there trapping and chasing after coyotes and in the Big Woods or somewhere anywhere else. So yeah, that's that's just good stuff will hear a lot more about coyote trapping in northern Maine in next week's episode. My girlfriend and I were returning from a motorcycle rally in Lakonia New Hampshire. It was late at night and we decided to camp out. I found a small gravel road, and we found a remote places set up my small two men tent. This area is referred to as the Pine Barrens Indiana bunk of Maine. Is a very thick scrub hind growth. About an hour after camping here, moving into the tent was not too concerned, because there's a lot of wildlife in the barons. The movement got closer and there was this really pungent odor I thought Oh. It's a bear. But was still not concerned as a black bears are mostly just curious and usually will not bother you. I should add here I've spent a lot of time in the woods as my mother and father were both Maine guides and the woods was my life. I have heard all the noises that wildlife makes different seasons I consider myself a good tracker, and they'll have the most animals. Then, it happened. Whatever it was, let out a scream that made every hair. My Body stands straight out in nearly gave me a heart attack. From saying to myself, quote, this is no bear in quote now. Girlfriend is awakened in hysterics I'm trying to quiet her, so I can keep track of whatever it is. It moved close enough to the tent, so I could actually feel. It's movement through the ground here, breeding Oh hell. No, this activity went on for about twenty minutes, and it went away. I would need some new Pajama bottoms. No I would need to go out and wash my rear end. Because our POOP, myself Yeah, no kid that is, that is a like Cliche from a camping horror movie. Yes, it is to the tea. It is waiting for something to come right through. You can hear the movement. You feel the movement to the ground. Yeah, but don't you tensor monster proof, dude? I'll another now we've seen plenty of. Your, see the shadow tend to not monster proof only only blankets on your better monster proof. That's the there you go. After a sleepless night at first light I crawled out to investigate I looked for tracks. There were no clear imprints only impressions in the grass and some broken FERNS, etc.. The impressions were about half again as big as my own. I wear a size eleven I followed the tracks in the ended at a cliff that was about thirty feet high. Yes he walked. To ended at the yeah, yeah I wanted to investigate further, but the girlfriend was having none of it in wanted to leave. And went back a couple times by myself to the area, but never found any further sightings in that area. This. All would have been disturbing enough, but that year I was leisurely, sipping a beer and watching the documentary on bigfoot with my girlfriend when they played a recording that was supposed to be a bigfoot scream. You guessed it. Hair straight out. An exclamation from both of us of Oh sheet. If, that was big foot than we have been very close to him. May. That is one hell of a signed limited. That would That'd be pretty damn trippy. Yeah, all right, so we've got a number of other siding so apparently. This thing or this bigfoot are seen quite a bit in the state of Maine Small State but still it has quite a bit of sightings because about six eight more Geez. Now, they're. They're a little bit shorter Sunday actually creatures dislike Prince but they're still collected as encounters on you know with various bigfoot organization, and is part of the research going with xactly nineteen five, Tober in Cumberland County Maine. A man took pictures of large footprints outside his house. That was probably just his wife's lover. Too deep imprint right outside the bedroom window where he landed he, he was a wrestler, so he was tall and heavy set, so he will fo yeah, and when he jumped out lamb, it was hulk Hogan. Nine hundred eighty six in Cumberland County Maine, the same man who reported tracks on this house earlier saw to dark, colored hair, covered men walking in his yard with a Springer Spaniel, biting at their heels what I guess. His dog was actually trying to attack him. Taking his rifle with him, he went onto the porch and at them they ran off, but he can hear whistling back and forth coming from the woods. That's crazy. They run off and I'm sending here whistling. Man That's creeps no. February, Nineteen eighty-seven, these are these next two are also in Cumberland. County February nineteen eighty seven. A man eating out of his car, known as strong unusual smell, and felt as if he was being watched while walking into his house, and also had the same feeling inside hell no.

It was twenty feet away and made a mad dash onto lakes into the heavily wooded area. Exact description of the APE was that it was little over five feet, tall with shaggy black coat, weighing about three hundred fifty pounds. It sounds more like an actual regular guerrilla. Yeah does not not so much a bigfoot. She says it had a quote. Unquote monkey face quote. Unquote Championship was another way it was described. She coasted her vigo as so as not to scare it. But when it apparently saw her vehicle, then it ran into the woods. She reportedly sought to separate times during this incident. As she returned with neighbors incited again. She stayed in your car as other searched the woods. She was sitting in a car when she saw again peering at her from the Crotch of tree. It definitely sounds more curious like a like an ape like an escaped monkey. Yeah, it does not like bigfoot once you see it in his you, it's. Gone Hell Yeah. In fact that he kept coming back and was you. Don't chase it. No, you can't keep up with is gone. I mean it has like a ten foot stride i. mean thing those things hall. A helicopter was using the search and the following days they use helicopters to get all the monsters main tracks found near cemetery, and not directly associated with the citing looked human, but had clause. They appear to be of a bear, probably most likely at first that night. Some officers brushed off the whole incident as a bear sighting which I would have to. This would change. Okay now sue thing is might interject sorry. I have seen bear track. Look nothing like a human. They have a round thing, and then they have three dots, and then you can see. Okay, it's not there there. Could be distinguished from an actual human footprint. Okay, they're very distinguishable, so and commented. Don't know what's going on here and I'd rather not express an opinion and quote, because Ak that means quote unquote I. Don't people think I'm crazy. Everyone was my job. That's exactly yeah. Sounds like having an open a Bistro in Portland Maine in the eighties. And I couldn't raise a dime to do it but that would have been on the menu. Then all right Brianna. What's on your menu? You're excited about right now. I would say we we make this biscuit that I've been thinking about making a really long time. I don't know why it took me as long as it's not at all hard but it's a biscuit and then we split it and put like a soft cheese on it and drizzle a large amount of honey which is honey that we've steeped with. Chilis and black pepper and then smashed the top back on and it's really messy and sticky and sweet. And it's really good stuff to us right now. We're getting it from Yorkhill. It's like a goat and cow Jonah. The golden cow golden counts off to you. John John is bigger. She works with me all right. So time for the speed round Brianna. We'll start with you since it's the food for thought tour. Where do you do your best thinking in bed and I can't go to sleep or wake up too early in bed Rebecca for me? It's dishwashing whether at the restaurant at home when.

I feel potatoes. You know we all do. We all do the crossword this is about. Islamophobia says it gets for us. We occasionally do things for folks like you and we tried to put a positive slant but sometimes it's hard. It's really difficult to love it. That is true. Brianna your turn. Food related issue. That's on your mind right now. Well I guess I would have to say that. It's it's something. I don't necessarily know exactly how to talk about very eloquently but at least kind of in our Portland Maine or southern meaner. I guess as far as the rest of the country has been concerned lately. Like all of Maine has kind of blown up as you said and has become kind of like a food destination. And everyone's really excited about it and I am. You know involved in that you know. Tandem is a destination and we have long lines and people get really excited. And we've been in some magazines as have all of you sitting here with me and I really love this city of lived here for about five years and I think it's really amazing. There's a lot of great stuff going on and for me. I just WANNA like figure out how to make other things visible. There's a lot of other people involved in the food system in Maine in general and in Portland a lot of other women. There's a lot of new Americans and immigrants that are in the food world here and and those things aren't as visible for people out in the world and there's a lot of small organizations in Portland that work for food security and food justice and there's a lot of around agriculture programs happening and those are things that I am really hoping to figure out how to have more of an impact on or be better at knowing about but you know hoping that the stuff that I do or that we do at tandem can be involved in this thing somehow and I think it'd be great if they were more of a part of the conversation of food in around Portland let kind of answers the food and the human side of food right now. We have a little speed round but before we go to that I would love to know one thing. That's on your menu right. Now that you're making that you're really really excited about Erin we keep starting with you. Start WITH WHY? Oh God.

Good Cara what's your one word. I on this question and honestly I am. I feel like I need to say two words because of my life is mostly split between being a chef and being a restaurant tour and I don't know which one goes all right. Go tell us both words will let you cheat code. I mean I am the Shefa Tau so I'm there every day with an an you. That's what I love and because of what I love to do. I decided to become a restaurant tour because I wanted to try to be better than the industry. That is currently Nickerson's which I'm still struggling with Rebecca. You know I'm torn I thought of was I love with a cocktail with with the bartender at the restaurant. The first year called the Sisyphus. Because that's the way. I feel pushing a rock uphill endlessly but really the word is troubleshooter. And the reason is if you'd asked me fifteen years ago when I said chef and frankly I was off the line for ten years until opened the restaurant in Maine and at sixty two years old I went back on the line started line cooking so I am actively cooking but really as a restaurant owner a business owner.

I got vanilla on the palate right at the beginning and it was very faint and said, I can tell this barely somewhat and then took a second sip engaged in a little bit of hang time. Some belch hang town. Whatever it really was not intended, but it really brought something just up. And I don't mean. Got all day. I get a little touch of annot on the knows more than anything because I think the flavors more dominated by the funk. So to be dominated by the fine. So there's a sweetness on the news that is just that's a little different. I guess it must be the Noah, but it's weird because it's it's like my my nose is fighting between one I'm expecting to have. It will fight funky nece. Right? You know, a Bredon flavor on the nose, but then there's this sweetness that describes creeping in. It's crazy. The first thing I wrote down when I smell it was vanilla malt that I don't even get the funk at. I really, oh man. I got some hops of the very end like I kinda feel like there's a little bit, but that was gin. I'm not getting that as much now, but I wrote that down when I first try initially. Sure, sure. I could see that because it warms up. The funky nece develops more comes out. So you that's probably right when it was nice and cold. A little more happiness? Yeah, cheesiness of it comes out a little bit more. Now this show how long been around out of curiosity, do you know top of your head. Really. Yeah. Is it we're looking it up? Does it have a restaurant or is it just the? It's It's just. just basically you walk farmhouse drive out into the woods literally. You drive into the woods. Okay. To be fair. There are other houses on that road. Were there more trees than houses on that particular road? Yes. But you are in a red you are in a residential area? Sure. Wow. So you drive out in the woods and then you go to this little shit. I think you're talking about something else that happened to you. I just keep going. Kim sleeping. Very was establishment twenty eleven. And they're already this good. They're amazing. Yeah, but they're still small, small batch. Yeah. And that kind of explains the fact that they're all also called and troll this right there. So crazy. You go into this little taproom in like there's the counter in the lady standing there. She's very nice. And then. The guy at some point. No. Then there's merch off to the side and the bottles, and she's got the taps and everything. And then you can walk kind of take a step down into this little taproom area.
