"How much we trust. Alabama how much vegas trust alabama like dude. We've seen it now. I mean. I mean joey we're going on. What like ten years of doing this stuff. And it's every year and they show up every year and this question marks every year in god mac jones's gone. Okay well the next guy. Bryce young's in and he's the heisman runner at the current moment. So it's just a trust factor that you know alabama's gonna bring their best. Nick sabin at press conferences against mercer last week blowing up and he's pissed off and his team's not given the right kind of effort because he knows he's talking to them. They're trying to win a championship down the road. So it says more than me about alabama yeah mentioning championships. Obviously everything has playoff implications. So this game is no different to that when you talk about. The playoff implications. We've got a graphic here to show everybody That gives you a.

"You just can't. That's why I brought up Bobby Wagner earlier to yeah. You just can't, you can't make this system work without really good talent in the back end and that back 7. And if you don't have it, there's a lot of open holes and a lot of opportunities for the Patriots in this game. Do you want that touchdown? I found it. Okay. One. Is this it? This is it. So this is the same coverage, right? Right. I forget. Who's this linebacker? It's 30, 32. It's not my boy Pete Warner. It's their other began with a B, I'll find it just keep talking. Yeah, he was also in the draft this year. So here's devonte Smith, number three, right? In the slot right here. Right, yeah, tough. Here's to watch a smith. Yeah, tough borland in a footrace with devonte Smith. It turned out exactly. So as you roll this play, you're going to see that tough borland is going to have to match Devante Smith vertical in this cover three scheme. And there's just no way that he's going to be able to win this foot race. So there you go. He's got a match vertical right there. Yeah. And devonta Smith just runs right by him. And Mac puts it on him for 50, 60 yard touchdown. So that's the matchup. That's the play that the Patriots are going to try to run. I'm sure. And like I said, whether Nelson Aguilar burns del Sean Phillips, just like devonte Smith did there with tough orland or they get that underneath check down to the running back, either way it's gonna be an easy read for Mac Jones and they're gonna be able to pick up some good yardage on it. Yeah, I think, you know, yeah. Yeah. I got nothing to add. You covered it. I'm just glad I could find that play in time that worked out. Yeah, that was good. That was good teamwork right there. All right, what about the Patriots backfield Alex? Because obviously Damien Harris is not going in the doghouse. They don't have a choice. But to play Damien Harris. But I want to talk about reminder Stevenson versus JJ Taylor and do we think that reminder Stevenson is going to get along leash here or are the Patriots going to put him in the doghouse for fumbling and failing to get run over by a Landon Roberts and all that kind of stuff that those little things that we talked about you and I not to take a victory lap, we said, reminders Stevenson might not be ready, right? Right. And here we are. So do we feel like reminders Stevenson gets a second stab at it this week? No, I think he's a healthy scratch. I think they go to JJ Taylor. And this is where. And.

"Make them now they do play 17 games this year. Last night was a heartbreak at the quarterback Daniel Jones actually played well. Giants led the Washington football team 29 27, right down to the end of regulation. Washington lined up to kick the game winning field goal, and initially it looked like my Giants. We're going to get a win 48 yard drive for the win. Good snap. Good Hold kick in is no good, but a flag is down in the secondary. The Giants are offsides, and it looks like Hopkins will get another shot. Good snap. Good hold can't get is good. Washington wins it. Dustin Hopkins made good. The second time around in Washington beat the Giants 32 29. Washington is one and one the Giants are going to the Jets are back at it Sunday at MetLife in Jersey, taking on the Patriots to rookie quarterback Zach Wilson for the Jets. "And I think across the NFL, with any follows it up, and he makes a play that only he can make. So, you know, those guys the way they have instincts, man, you signed the XFL, I don't know if you guys watched the XFL. Oh yeah, like that. It was like this guy definitely did. It was an electric factory. And he helped a lot. I mean, I made a lot of money on the XFL just betting on PJ. So that was a good thing I got to keep going. I mean, him and I was a cam Phillips was the receiver there in Houston. I mean, that was the connection. He would have won MVP, I think, of that thing played out. I had said that at the time. So what's funny is we have I worked with the Luis Perez kit too, who was in New York, who had gotten in and then New York was playing good. Oh, wow. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I'm sitting there. He was with the Birmingham or Alabama. Yep. Yeah. And so I'm sitting there and I'm like, oh, these two guys are gonna play in the championship. And then I wake up and I'm like, oh, never mind the world's gonna shut down. So that was a little different. That would have been the Jenkins elite bull at both of them. Had played at the championship game. I went to watch PJ sorry. One last time I went to watch last game. In Houston, before everything got shut down. And all of her luck is there, the commissioner right Andrews that. And he's walking and I look at him and I go you're welcome. And he's like, I just kept walking. And I was like, you know, I just wanted to make sure I do that. We're saving this New York franchise. It is Houston franchise. That's awesome. Man, well, we were both Alex and I were texting back and forth about PJ walker, all preseason and I knew that was your guy, so I was happy for you and excited for you. As you can tell, Tim clearly knows his stuff, I'll throw his Twitter handle back on the screen here for everybody. Make sure that you go and follow him on YouTube as well. All things quarterback. You can go on there. All things can be excuse me. And Tim has breakdowns, film breakdowns of Mac Jones of the other rookie QBs. I didn't get to ask you how you thought Mac was compared to the other rookie quarterbacks, but we can have you on in a couple of weeks once we get some regular season tape under the belt and discuss some of those things as well. But all things QB on YouTube breakdowns, film breakdowns of Mac Jones, the other rookie quarterbacks and all sorts of people around the NFL are flocking to all things QB to watch these kiwi breakdowns. I'm telling you from a guy like Tim, who has worn the helmet and been in those shoes before it's obviously next level stuff as you guys can tell from the last hour or so and we could pick Tim's brand for another hour, Alex to talk to him about the XFL for another hour. So we'll have Tim back on soon and check back in with him after Mac Jones makes a couple regular season starts. But until then, Alex and I will be back on the Thursday show at a preview Sunday's season opener against the Miami Dolphins. I can't believe we're already there, but it is week one, so we will get into the dolphins and the Patriots match up on Thursday,.

"Newton out in New England. This was a surprise release after the Patriots tapped rookie Mac Jones as the starting quarterback. In fact, Ken Jones is the only quarterback currently on the Pats roster, so I would imagine there Else to cam going to happen in the cell and head down here. What do you think? And i would live and die with my golfer so much so that when we came down to the very last week of the season this past week the bmw championships in owings mills maryland. I had a choice between zander. Schofield encamp smith. And i was obsessing over it and i called. Espn's golf writer reporter. Michael collins to ask him whether he recommended cam smith or zander shafi and he said cam smith might have a tough time bouncing back mentally after losing the playoff at the northern trust and so i turned in the pick of zander shafi who by the way i had at the pga championships in. May i believe it was when he missed the cut and ruined my weekend ruined my weekend. Well we've pick zander shafi. Over cam. smith mike collins thought that cancer it might build down and low behold camp smith got better and better as the weekend went on and zander. Shafi finished forty nine now. It was enough to hold on and hold off the second place team and to win the tournament. Achieving a twenty four week long goal that we had set for our team and on monday. My facetime rang and it was none other than michael collins from the golf tournament in atlanta. And he had none other than zander shafi with him now. I have to thank zander. Because we had him at the pga. He didn't come through but he finished. Forty ninth we did get forty thousand points. I believe it was this past week for him finishing where he did but i did tell him that. We made more money our team this weekend than he made in baltimore and i did thank him for his contributions and i told him how much i enjoyed tracking and following him this year. And how big fantasy cal has become and we had a great conversation. What a great guy. And i really appreciate it michael collins face timing us with the man himself who was our last pick of this tournament a tournament that will go down but we owe our biggest thanks to john. Rahm who provided one of the great sporting thrills of a lifetime on father's day winning that tournament when we had them and justin. Thomas loved that gal. I am so thankful it is now over so that i could focus on the football season in my fantasy football teams. All that obsession all that thought all that energy. My art just like burning like firemen and just just just you know making the motivated everything that you just got me fired up just mentioned in right there really man. It's i mean. It was an embarrassing day. I mean night. What was in nine to thirty something like that. We didn't even put up a touchdown it just wasn't it wasn't the the best performance i think i've ever put on the ceiling and definitely cheesman. What are the chances that some defensive coordinator studied at tape and then try to duplicate if they can some of the things that the buccaneers did you that day. Well i think it's it's it was a very good scheme you i think it's beatable yes. I do. Think it's not going to sit here and say we should win game because obviously they they came out and they they performed them all all three phases of the game Better than us. So i would say that You know i would love another chance at. That's for sure You have to not stop evolve as as a player as offense knowing how they think we would. We would react. Or how how. We see how they want to defense. You know we'll find ways to to you. Know tryin have an answer for and that's what makes read so unbelievably great and the great coaches and the great players in this locker that we keep them all speaking of evolving. We growing backer facial hair. We're getting back to this started. Come into my just keep it right here chef just just a little bit of the face it makes me feel like i'm not getting old. You know and then and then just a little bit of fun so that it doesn't look like i'm you know fourteen all over again. You expect the reaction got when you shoot offering facial hair. And you know your you're skimmers. Is brexit the baby's bottom. Yeah i hadn't had the full stash chin and everything gone since. Probably i was twenty one. Maybe it's been it's been a while. So that was that was. It was refreshing to see my face And then it was refreshing to get just roasted on social media next week. What was one thing that somebody said stayed with. You was the one day. Sure man one picture that the jews through just. It wasn't the most lettering they said. Somebody said i looked like i was will ferrell playing a movie about me and it was just it was spot on. I mean just in terms of the face and everything. I don't know i thought it was fear camry. I guess right opening rumor exactly exactly. We'll see we'll see later on in. My career might have to do that. And before i let you go. Tell me what we're going to see this year from. The kansas city chiefs says they try to bounce back from that imphal loss. That is so fresh in your memory. Man i'll tell you what we're worksite. We're excited we're not letting it lost linger. Were just knowing that it's there in that it's a it's it's motivating us to be better Right now it's a lot of excitement in this building and everybody's working hard. I want to thank you very much digging a few minutes to speak with us before the season. I'm always pulling for you. If i use the six stick of my draft this guy for even more looking for that endorsement. We'll get that endorsement buso. We'll see. I appreciate the magic you've provide on the field. Lots of luck this season with for and will be a test drive. You're the man chef bridge And there is travis. Kelsey d longest tenured member of the kansas city chiefs. Now that they let go of eric fisher and anthony shurmur during the off season traps. Kelsey as the longest tenure of any chief. And it doesn't look like it's going to be letting up anytime soon. New England Patriots Cut Cam Newton; Mac Jones to Start

"Speaking with our breaking news at foxborough. The patriots are releasing cam newton. And we'll move forward with as their quarterback pro football focus posted this week that the alabama rookie has the best preseason rookie passing rate since two thousand thirteen and now look to do with him. Couldn't do last year. Get new england back to the playoffs. Oh shannon what will be the patriots record with mac as a start of the season trying to look as you mentioned. I've tried to schedule and looking at it I say this is gonna make the playoffs. And so i believe it's gonna take ten wins for them to make the playoffs. So i'm gonna go ten ten and seven at the bare minimum possibly lebanon states. But i'll be conservative. I'll say ten and seven I think mayfield play well. I know they're not going to rely olmec as much as maybe some of the other quarterbacks but they're going to run the football i believe they're going to be a top five running team and everything they do is going to be predded gonna be set up the running game so they're gonna be heavy play action. They went to the to tidy. As they went and got a hindrance free agency got john newsouth upgraded the wide receiver position. I think decide nelson born. Yeah so they got some weapons. I man i still like jacoby. Myers i like here tomorrow. Watching the better he gets. I really liked jacoby. Myers in so with that being said skipped. I'm gonna say they go tunas seven and they make the playoffs.

Hippies miami we want now all signs point to cam. Newton started every preseason game pot. Mack jones overall really nice progress completing thirty six hundred fifty rose. Three hundred eighty nine yards and a touchdown in the preseason so bill what do you think ahead two regular season games. Have you made a decision on who will start at quarterback in the regular season. Yeah no we. We still have a lot of decisions. You think you've played well enough to be a starter of. I mean i've done a lot of opportunities to play in. I can improve on everything. I want to improve on. So i think. Just learning. From hoyer. Cam jared anybody. I can just listening to josh. And his coaching. There's a lot of work to do but I think i've made progress but honestly just the only thing that matters is today Tomorrow focus on tomorrow. "Absolutely Mac has exceeded my expectations. I mean, you know, I did say after the first practice that he was going to be the starter sooner rather than later. But on field, his physical abilities, the ability to manipulate the pocket like you talked about, has been better than I thought it was going to be. His accuracy has been better than I thought it was going to be. You know, but here's the other thing. I don't even think they've really gotten into what the sweet spot is going to be for Mac Jones, and that's his abilities at the line. That's why, you know, I disagree with some people who make the point. Well, you need to have the starter named and he needs all the reps. They really haven't gone very far in practices and aside from identifying the mic and maybe a few small changes. They have an advanced very far in this. I think that the offense that they are starting with the year, you know, Nick, we've always talked to years past about how the Patriots defense goes pretty vanilla and then they build and build and build to the end of the year. And we never had to worry about it because it was Tom Brady as the quarterback. They were already, they were always going to be advanced and Tom is going to be Tom. I think we're in that situation now with the offense. I think that they're going to start very basic and they're going to start to layer on. And I think that's part of the where cam and Mac or Mac and differentiate himself from cam and he might get the job earlier than we think. Because I do think they're going to start layering that stuff because that's the whole key to this offense. You need a quarterback that can read the defense pre snap, make the adjustments so that the offense gets into a good play. All right, I want to get to some rapid fire questions. We also have the member question of the day, but first, I want to get Bernard's thoughts on Cuban rounds. I mean, just unbelievable. Unbelievable. We're talking cigars. Yeah, and I've gotten a ton of pictures from people are listeners, are members that are bought some Cuban rounds that are smoking them, like, you know, it's great stuff. I mean, these are these are handcrafted. They're all natural. They're affordably priced. Havana inspired Nick, I've been telling you, I take them out, I'll smoke them on the golf course. I'll smoke them on the porch. Like, the thing I really enjoy about these, first of all, they look and feel like luxury cigars and I have smoked those in the past. These are in the same ballpark. They're much more affordable. And the thing that I love about them is that, you know, sometimes you'll have a cigar and it's just like, oh man, everything's like too heavy like dominates everything like your taste, your smell, your clothes, everything like these Cuban rounds, like they're just, it's almost like a really good sort of light beer that's like really well crafted in that. You could just you smoke it, it's not a big deal. It doesn't dominate you. It doesn't affect you for the rest of the day. It just, it's a really good product in your hand when you want to celebrate something or you just want to sit back and say, you know what, I did a good job today. And Mac Jones has probably smoked a lot of human rights because he had a really after every camp practice..

"But I feel really good about Mac Jones and I'm ready to put him in whenever I can. So was this ever a quarterback battle? Or do you think Bill and his head said cam's gonna start week one? That's what it's going to be. We're going to challenge The Rookie as much as we can. But I pretty much know the end of this story. I do think it was a quarterback competition. And, you know, I say that because if it wasn't if Mac Jones didn't keep up his end of the bargain, then they would just redshirt him this year. And I don't think that they're going to do that. I think that I think that the argument that I keep making is, and I don't know if I'm not making the point clearly enough because people don't understand it. But the week one opening day starter doesn't mean anything. It doesn't if you have two guys who are really close. And you have one guy who's a vet who's been in the league like 12 years and it's been in the system for two years. And the other kid is a rookie first round pick who has only been here for a couple of months. You know, they could easily just say we're red shirting Mac it's cam's team. We're not only putting Mac in if there's an emergency. And actually, you know, we're going with Brian Hoyer as the backup and max not gonna dress. Like that would mean that there wasn't a quarterback competition. There was a quarterback competition because in weak, if it's week 6 or 7 or 8, what have you and Bill and Josh McDaniels look at it and they say, you know what? Cam has a progress as much as we thought. The offense is the passing offenses limited. We can't win like this. We need to go to Mac. Then that means that Mac Jones won the quarterback competition. Week one, week 6, it doesn't matter. Week one is an arbitrary made up deadline. It doesn't mean anything. It doesn't. And I don't know why people keep misconstruing this. But if I think Mac Jones is going to be the quarterback to finish this season for the Patriots and in my mind that all that matters and that shows you that it is, it has been a competition because Mac had to win that. You win that trust, and I think he's done that. Yeah, and they say in the NBA, it's not who starts the game. It's who finishes you hear that all the time and you can say that about the football season. One last one for you. You know, you were one of the first guys, if not the first guy watching Mac in mandatory mini camp. And the control at the line of scrimmage. And I always remember you saying he calls out the mic. He makes an adjustment with the protection. And, you know, he looked, I believe it was at Kendrick Bourne agala, and they kind of had this, yes, this is what we're gonna do and the ball was out quick. So going from that very first time when you wrote about that, Greg, so where we are right now on August 27th, 2021. Did Mack end up exceeding your expectations over the last few weeks?.

"Camp. Dude return to practice today. But it will Patriots did he return to a starting job? That's the question we gave nights went from pretty Coleman. I mean, but Simmons on ESPN Radio ESPN have serious examine Channel Etienne. And gave that is the ultimate question because you look at New York Giants reporters when the Patriots were going ones V ones. And Patrick Graham is a heck of a defensive coordinator for the new for the New York Giants. As a matter of fact, he should be getting looks in the next couple of years. As a head coach. He runs very complex defenses and By all accounts, Mac Jones. Let him up. I mean to lift them up two days ago. Today. Cam Newton returned to practice and they split time. We're the ones and getting their reps. But Mac Jones took a massive opportunity and ran with it. Your reaction Yeah, That's what you want to see. And that for you spent a first round pick on a quarterback when he gets that opportunity, and you didn't know when it was going to come. You don't know how it was going to come for him to take that opportunity and run with it. That's what you want to see. That being said. I still think Cam Newton is going to be starting September 12th. I just feel that he's going to start the season as the number one quarterback for Bill Belichick. I'm excited. Honestly, for Cam in Year two with the New England Patriots, I thought he was gonna be a little bit better a year ago. Nick Saban Reveals ‘Biggest Concern’ With Name, Image, Likeness

"About Nick Saban. For a moment. Nick Saban Greatest coach in college football, one of the greatest coaches to ever live so Saban had An interesting point that he was making when he was talking about this upcoming season. It had to do with name, image and likeness laws, like everything else that's going on with college football. Very naturally. So I mean, this is a big deal, right? Of course it is. We're talking about college athletes finally getting paid, finally making money based on who they are. And what they're worth. Bold concept. Um, but it finally happened, And now that it has Things are going to be different. And for Nick Saban, he was talking a little bit about the locker room. How is it going to be different? Going to be different a very major way. Because you have to consider that we're getting Players. That for a lot of these guys. They've lived in a college football world They've been in multiple seasons. Where nobody's made money. Whatever happened within the normal rules, that's that's just what it was. Now, suddenly bam! Things change things changed dramatically. Because what do you get? Well, now the guy who has a locker right next to you could have an endorsement deal That's worth a lot of money. And Saban didn't say who the player was. But he hinted that one of his players a quarterback on the roster. Has been offered a deal. Close to a million dollars. Not Mac Jones. He just got drafted in the first round. So this is somebody that has not been the starter at Alabama is now getting of million dollars nearly a million dollars in an endorsement deal. Nobody else on the team is going to be making that kind of money. Nobody else on that team has seen that kind of money before. How do you handle that? It's

"Newton and mack jones strong showing and the patriots preseason win which capped off bill belichick described as a good week finally felt like cam newton. Joe was able to take a little bit more of a strong hold on the grip of the patriots quarterback competition. He looked good in the start. Eight of nine hundred and three yards finish with one touchdowns. One on one touchdown no interceptions. He played three series before. Mac jones the rookie than took over jones first-round pick from alabama was also quite productive in this outing. Thirteen for nine thousand nine hundred forty six yards over four series. He had no touchdowns and no interceptions so all week long. We were talking about houses quarterback competition going to go in new england. Who's going to separate themselves. How are they gonna look now that they actually get to see some competition during the week in practice with those joints against philadelphia. I was reading earlier in the week. Just about how those practices went and that it was jalen hurts of all people who was standing apart of all the quarterbacks that we saw in philadelphia but now with cam newton and mack jones. This makes this one of the more interesting quarterback battles of the preseason because you have an incumbent in cam newton who was played a lot more seasons of professional football than his counterpart mack jones anecdote always feels like bill ballot checks to give him this final shot to prove himself and so far looks like he's off to a pretty good start.

"Do you think about the pat- patriots quarterback battle. And do you think it's possible mack. Jones starts week one. Oh there's no question it's possible. I mean i think if he if he beats him out if he's clearly the better option and camp. Then that's bill belichick will do i. I don't think there's any doubt of it now. He's been saying cam newton starter since draft night When they when they took mack jones. But i think he you know obviously he wants to rookie to have to earn it. They put number fifty on him Mini camps so that that's a sign of that. But yeah i mean i think it's it's entirely possible and i think what you saw was cam newton. You know yeah. I think he's frustrated with the questions. I think he was coming off by. Most accounts was was kind of a tough practice for him And he probably. Here's the steps. I think you know everybody who's been around. Eighteen says that matt jones is closing gap so I'm it's likely the cam. Newton feels the same way and that's probably making him feel some pressure.

"The other side. I it's a more interesting. Quarterback is a quarterback competition in new england. What is the sense. You get the dynamic between cam. Newton and mack jones. Yes quarterback competition. We can call it that cam. Newton is the starter plated limited amount of time against the washington football team. And then as you mentioned mack jones and it's very important not only to listen to what bill bella checks says but what he does and what he did was put back jones out there with the first team offensive line for a couple of plays at the end of his at the first half against the washington football team and then he had max jones run the two minute drill the no huddle offense and that he did with command and obviously precision and they were very impressed with that but right now what he wants to see what bill belichick wants to see and he said this the other day he to see the whole team but particularly the quarterback play faster react faster execute faster and what better way to do that than enjoying practices with the philadelphia eagles and then a preseason game on thursday night but yes there is a competition and we'll have to see how this goes in the next couple of weeks but my money is on cam. Newton starting the season and mack jones quickly getting up to speed and pushing cam newton for the starting job.

Mac Jones Sought Advice From Cam Newton Before Patriots Debut

"Of 19 passes for 87 yards in his preseason debut in Foxboro against Washington. The quarterback was smooth, efficient and appeared confident he was a pro who didn't look at all out of place. In his first NFL action. Jones is competing with veteran Cam Newton for the starting job, Newton said the to talk before the game about Jones expectations. Every young quarterback goes. Through it. The excitement, the anticipation. You know, he wants to be so perfect, and I see his preparation is always, you know, pristine and you know, that's what I admire about him at such a young age. He knows how to prepare and knows when Josh asked quick questions or when the person asked quick questions. He knows how to kind of have answers for it. Newton added. Every player's learning curve is different, but he's just going to keep getting better. And you know we're going to be here for each other along this whole process, and you know, that's what we're here for. Bats will continue their preseason Thursday night

"Podcast here on this Thursday afternoon. And today Alex, we are going to break down the path for Mac Jones to become the week. One starter for the New England Patriots, or we can just call it the starter in his rookie season as well. It doesn't necessarily have to be in week one, but we want to make it a little bit more. Exciting by putting that off a Carnet onus, on him to get that, starting job at the end of training camp in the preseason. So we're going to talk a little bit of Mac Jones here at the beginning of the show that we're going to get into some of the stuff about n'keal Harry Jeremy. Fowler having a report out there today about a conditional, sixth-round pick sort of being the price. That's being floated around the league for n'keal Harry right now. So we'll get into that later on. But I want to start off with Mac Jones Alex and just how he wins this starting job in training camp and we're not talking about Cam Newton getting injured or something like that. We're talking about him. Outright winning the job and stealing it from Cam and I wanted to drop this. Just to start off. Then we'll get into some of them sort of plan. I only had two steps for Mac instead of 3 a.m. I have a cam but we can we can do the sort of a similar setup. But the ones that I wanted to drop here was at a thirty three, quarterbacks trapped in the first round in the last decade. So that since 2010 only need one of those thirty three quarterbacks didn't start a game and their rookie season and that was Jake Locker a way back when for the Tennessee Titans. So every other quarterback. Now some of those guys like back home, started one game, and it was a white week 17 that sort of situation. But most of these QBs that get drafted where Mac, get drought, Mac got drafted, eventually start as rookies at some point in time and a lot of them started double-digit games as rookies. So, we're talking about a situation where eventually Mac is going to get his chance, whether it's early birth..

"Yeah, the member question of the day I thought, and actually, I'm grabbing this from from Twitter where I saw this. And somebody said, scary when you pull from Twitter. Yes, yes it is. So somebody asked me and I'm trying to find it All right, well Jamal for some reason has not been down on the Mac Jones talk and and I love the guy. He's a good Twitter guy. He always gives feedback and he said, Mac, Jones, fourth, or fifth best QB in the draft. Let's not try to convince people, he's Andrew Luck in the Pats, got a steal at fifteen, and I just wanted to reply and I replied to him on Twitter, but I just wanted to say, if Jamal is listening, I appreciate you listening and following, but nobody in this corner is saying anything about Mac Jones, being Andrew Luck. And I think we just had a segment. Basically, detailing bystander luck at this point in time. And by the way, hinder luck. Wasn't that good? Just to let people know, he really wasn't at the end of the day. And I got in a, I got a whole crap ton of stuff for rightness, column for Sports. Illustrated say, he might be at some point in time, but Andrew Luck Is Not Great yet. And boy the blowback. I got and guess what month? He was not good to finish the rest of his short career. So look, nobody saying that Mac Jones is Andrew Luck. He's got a long way to go. He certainly could look a lot better because of his surroundings. Hear sort of, you know, we've talked about it before, we've all had, beer goggles in college and other times and, and Nick's Bar down there and Virginia. Uh, I think I'm, I, I have a serious case of Cuba goggles, and that might be going on at this point in time after the last year. But but kids got a long ways to go. I can't, I can't even tell you right now. Whether you play winning football for this team, I think you can, but we'll see. But first, he's got to win the job. And I think today was a big step towards doing that, but it could all flip on its head tomorrow because the cold here is William Steven Belichick and he just loves to screw with us. He does. And there's this just weird thing in 2021 when you just like, you're not allowed to enjoy stuff down. Not allowed to give credit to anybody. And if if you if you say something nice about a player, oh come on, he's not the greatest of all everybody, just take a deep breath. I mean we can credit the guy off or looking like he he knows things and understand stuff out there very early in the camp process. We can objectively talk about this stuff without losing our minds. Everybody calm down, nobody's same thing. He's Dan Marino or John Elway or Tom Brady. Nobody's saying that it were just talking about observations and what he's been able to handle early on. And it's not the worst thing in the world, try to be a little optimistic and say, Hey, you know, maybe they actually drafted a guy at fifteen, who can play the quarterback position? That would be pretty cool. Nobody saying he's the greatest thing since sliced bread, so it's just more twenty Twenty-One stuff. As I said it's, you know, sometimes it's dangerous. That's what our world. He is Greg Bedard, I am Nick cattles. That'll do it for this episode of the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick cattles everybody be well we'll talk to you song..

"Absolutely. I mean I I completely agree with you Nick and, and you're right at quarterbacks all have their different strengths and weaknesses to me. Give me the, give me the mind and we can figure out things physically, but I think that, I think that Jones where he is is really good. I think they're quietly is and look, we talked about this right after they drafted him where you know, some people were pooh-poohing it and saying like well Patriots fell into it and how much did they really love? Um, and all those bolts. Yep. And and I told you from people that I talked to and and look, I understand. Cuz I talked to people right after that and I'm like, you know, why aren't you guys more excited? Like what's the deal like you God, this guy is perfect for you guys do like why you you know Belichick downplayed it people, I talked to downplayed it and what I got was You know, there there's an enormous amount of respect for Cam and and they might need cam look, you never know what's going to happen. Let's say it is Mac Jones, but what if he gets hurt them, you know, you can go to state, I'm going to go to Hoyer with and wouldn't it be better to have Cam Newton around to say at least run you through like one squeak through one win? You know, mostly running the ball and being consumed the passing offense. I think so. So there's enormous amount of respect for cam. We saw, you know, his his influence, even on the Julio Jones stuff and so, you know, nobody in the immediate aftermath of the draft, no one was going to dance on his grave or anything. And who knew nobody knew what was going to happen? Who knows? Mac, Jones could have showed up three hundred fifty pounds. You don't know the purple dream. Like JaMarcus Russell all of a sudden if he was on the Hightower post-draft plan. He would have been a little Hefty when he he they were not happy when Dante Hightower showed up here after the draft cuz dead. some of those Alabama guys, like they're like their food after, you know, a lot of guys go through this, they cut, they cut wait for the combine and stuff like that and then they, you know, have a little barbecue and things like that, you know, and got a control for some guys, but anyways, they get a little yeah I digress but.

"This is the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick cabins. All right, Greg. So I'm sitting at my house last night before I go out. I don't know. I don't know if I want to hear the rest of the story. I don't know. I'm perusing through Twitter and I see your life story pop up at bsj, and I click on it and I read it. And I'm almost beside myself because I'm like, wait a minute. Is this the Greg Bedard writing? This about Mac Jones? Let's just say, if you haven't read the column yet, I'm sure. Greg will share a lot of his thoughts here on this podcast. Let's just say that Greg. I think you got Patriots fans, all worked up in a lather about Mac Jones, if they were reading your column. Let's just talk about some of your observations. Obviously, they let you through the gates, congratulations on that that you were able to make it on through. Thank you Willy, Wonka song as a k, a Stacey James. Thank you. Stacey James gave you your golden ticket. So let's talk about Mac Jones and what you saw yesterday. So, yeah. So we went out to practice and look, this was put quotation marks around the word practice, I love how. So we got there, they kept changing the time and we got them and they were supposed to let us in. I think about 11:30, I'm not sure ultimate ultimately what time it was but you know, they held us outside and you could see there on the field practicing, you know, I think it was more it was a little faster than walk through us but it was offense versus defense. Of course, we didn't really even see that in our practice, it's just typical Bell check, you know, he was God, speaking of he's the real Willy Wonka. You know, I I think I don't know if Matt Patricia's one of the Oompa Loompas or what the deal is but you know, that's just basically Gillette is the factory. In fact, he's Willie Wonka and he does what he wants behind closed doors and we got our golden ticket yesterday. So they let us in and it was a glorified. It was a glorified teaching practice. There wasn't any competition wrong. There were a couple couple sessions where the offense and defense were on the field the quarterbacks mostly through a check down. So other than lawyer went deep ones basically been like you know, I'm going to be only here for about a month. So I might as well let it rip off and he had Nelson agholor down the right side so that was good. So obviously I was looking around sort of seeing who was there. There were not a lot of veterans there with some of the newcomers from free agency were there. And you know, just trying to size people up seeing, what kind of difference there is in terms of, you know, how they look at, they lost weight gained weight back stuff like that. And then my attention quickly went to the quarterbacks and this is what I saw and I didn't go in with any preconceived notions and I will say this off the bat and I said this page column. Look, who the hell knows what Bill Belichick's doing. But no, this he knew there was one practice this week. There's one next week and I think the week after where.

Patriots Sign Quarterback Brian Hoyer to a One-Year Deal

"Going on with the Patriots. Obviously, the biggest news item in the last 24 hours. Brian Hoyer is once again. Greg Choice once again. Belichick can't quit him. Brian Hoyer is once again, back with the Patriots in the quarterback room. Wait, the big news isn't James Ferentz coming back, I was. Prepare for a hold James Ferentz, whole interior, office behind breakdown. Let's do it. So yeah, horror is back. I think this is fantastic for the Patriots. This is something that you've talked about. I wrote in my column, the night that Mac Jones was drafted, I said, by the way, can we get Brian Hoyer now in the building, sign them to basically be Mac Jones's Tudor and I believe from them alive talked to, that's why he's here. Now look Brian Hoyer. No matter what you think of him, he's no slouch, he's been around, he can get, he's, he's a good emergency backup quarterback. Who knows what's going to happen? But right now, of course, the popular thing Nick is to say, oh, well, this must mean something about Cam Newton or Jarrett Stidham. They must not like what they see maybe and they're looking to replace them as far as I know. None of that is true. All I know is look. It's met. "There's a guy that we want, we think he's going to fall to 15. It might not, we're going to protect ourselves. So let's say they talked to the teams in the office, you know, from the Carolina Panthers on down, right. And they talked to them and they say, look, let's have some if we offered you, X, Y, and Z. Would that be in your ballpark? If we're coming up and they say, yes or no, I mean, it's not a hard discussion so they're not, they're not really getting after it. Basically, what you're doing Nick, the bottom line is what you're doing is you're baking a, a right-of-first-refusal for certain draft picks, so I'm sure I'm sure that when the Vikings were on the clock and the Jets came up But there was a discussion between someone on the Vikings and someone on the Patriots that said and I don't know. Sometimes they get into specific team, sometimes they don't and and I don't think people really want to walk around Belichick's. So they probably do tell them. They'll be like, look, I got the Jets on the other line. They're coming up in the Patriots are probably like, well, the Jets aren't taking Mac Jones. They just took Zach Wilson, right? Yeah. What are weekends off? Yep. So that goes on. So you combine all of those things and it's not that hard to say that Bill Belichick read the board and said, you know what? We got a good job is going to be there. Who is our quarterback? Who is the quarterback that we want? Why on Earth would we trade up three or four spots? Give somebody an extra first-round pick or second-round pick, or what have you done to move up? What, just so we look like we really wanted the guy. I mean, look, I love those guys, but it's a it's just a completely. Ridiculous argument, Mac, Jones, As we talked about the entire time on this podcast, Justin Fields was not for them in that range of the first round. I think he would have been under consideration towards the back half of the first round off. And I'm not even sure about that. But Mac Jones was their guy, I was told that they had pretty good Intel that the 49ers had switched from Mac Jones to Trail a.

"This is the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick cabins. All right, so another draft in the books. Greg in a lot to talk about a lot to sift through. Let's start with Matt Jones because that's where we began on Thursday night when we did our late podcast that we went live and we appreciate everybody who joined us that night Beyond 1 a.m. just, you know, crazy passionate Patriots fans. Thank you to all of them. But let's start with Mac Jones because I gather and listen, I don't have a chance to really sit down and and listen to Boston radio. So I gather on Twitter that there's a certain show that you are on long time to time that had some kind of beef about Matt Jones and how that came about the idea is I guess. And and you can correct me if I'm wrong but the idea is worth a tree. It's if, if they really liked Jones, they should have moved up and they should have drafted him. There's another story line about possibly Robert. Kraft forcing Belichick to take Mac Jones. Start with how the Patriots. Were able to acquire Mac Jones. They stayed at fifteen. They drafted him at 15. Should they have? Moved up, Greg, should they have done something different? Of course not. I mean, and I and I love failure mass and I'll be on with those guys today and I'm sure this is a big part of what we'll talk about failures straw, man. Argument a couple of packs, a couple straw-man arguments on this one, you know. So this one it's it's not giving them enough juice. So he's got a, he's got a inject, a couple strommen and do this. Number one, is that off. And look, I I could I know that there are people who are saying this, but that that he keeps talking about like that, that some people are saying that the Patriots were smart. They were brilliant for staying put a 15. Now look, I understand, there are plenty of people out there including those in the media who think that when Belichick farts, it smells like roses, like I understand wage. Okay, but I don't know who he who is listening to, who is getting this from about that, that the pellets that the Patriots were brilliant. To stay put at 15,000 um maybe some of the Belichick acolytes in the media. But look as far as that storyline goes, I don't I don't think they're smart. I just think that they they read the board well and and there's a couple of Reason in will get into this will take us into the Mac Jones discussion and the pic There are different things that go into play when you're in the draft, when you're in the draft at that spot, every spot really, you have all this entail on other teams, so, wage. So the Patriots. New, first of all, answer me this Nick is Mac Jones. Considering today's NFL is Matt Jones. The type of passer he is dead for every team in the league..

"But at some point in time whenever Mac Jones is ready, he is going to be able to operate the full facilities of the Patriots offense, which Cam Newton was never able to do last year, I don't care what was around him. Mac Jones is one of the most advanced. I didn't get a chance to ask Bill. This question in the press conference. I wanted to But Mac Jones is probably the most advanced college quarterback in terms of pre-snap checks reads, all this stuff. All the mental song that goes on at the line of scrimmage I have not seen or heard of a quarterback as advanced at Mac Jones in terms of what his level of experience is. And I think that it's just citing to me. It's probably exciting to Josh McDaniels. It's probably exciting to the Patriots that eventually at some point in time. Mac Jones is going to be able to do a lot of the stuff at the line Shack on. Brady could do. I'm not saying everything. I'm not saying that he is Tom Brady, but just to be able to say, all right, we see this defense, we're going to check out of this, this guy is Advanced Beyond almost all college quarterbacks you. You talk to people around the Alabama program, and they talk about how smart he is. They talk about how he's been teaching the Alabama offense, to Bill, O'Brien wage, Down there, so right? Just in terms of all that, that's a great basis and it's something that the Patriots lacked, whether it was Cam Newton or Jerry students. "This is the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick cabins. All right. So here we go. Greg. Sorry if my lighting is a little off, I couldn't care less. It's almost 10 of 1 in the morning, but we are here and we are talking about the Patriots draft. And you know what Mac? Joe at fifteen, Greg, your initial thoughts, I would be thrilled if I was a Patriots fan in terms of You know, overall what went down that they didn't have to trade up or anything like that. I think that's number one that they got. I don't want to talk about value because everybody talks about with the Patriots. Like, you know, they they they stayed put and the most important thing is they didn't have to overpay for anything. And the second most important thing is, in my opinion, they got the most pro-ready quarterback in the draft, and they got the quarterback that best translates to what they do as far as an offense. And look, we whole bill tonight. Just got off the press conference with him. Say that cams, our quarterback and went on to say, Whatever time Jerry or Mac are ready to challenge a compete. Then we'll see how that goes. I don't think anybody should think anything that belczak was going to say anything else about the guy doesn't even have the Patriots, Playbook bills, not going to give him anything or give him any sort of Leverage or anything. Where, you know, you hear other? I've got news, he's a guy. I mean, you hear other teams and I've ridiculed them in the past that draft the guy in there. Like he's a day. One starter what, what are you talking about? He hasn't even practiced yet, so that's not a surprise. But I think the big thing for me and I think for the Patriots is this, Mac Jones. Eventually. And I'm not saying from the get-go or his rookie year or what-have-you, I do expect him to compete for the job, fairly early, probably for the season. Opener might take them a little bit longer but at some point in time whenever Mac Jones is ready, he is going to be able to operate the full facilities of the Patriots offense, which Cam Newton was never able to do last year, I don't care what was around him. Final 2021 NFL Draft Quarterback Rankings: Trevor Lawrence and Then What?

"So guys let's start off with the quarterbacks as this is probably the least eventful group especially because we just let mark handle this position group. Because that is his forte his speciality. We don't even really need to go through the ordering or anything specific with this one as we're going to do it the other position groups but the thing that's worth noting is it. Mark was highly reluctant to really go past mack jones and then after thinking it over he threw in kellyn mind. Davis mills kyle. Trask jamie newman. And that was pretty much it so i think we can all agree here that the quarterback class in in this year's nfl draft isn't exactly very good on the back end. There's a lot of really good talent at the top but as we start to push towards the second and third round like we don't even have a third rounder in this group. There's not really a lot of good options now. It doesn't really tier that way. Joe obviously you have the tran said quote unquote time trevor. Lawrence. and then. There's a lot of debate on who that actual second quarterback would be adjusted sales from ohio. State zack wilson from byu. Mac from alabama. It seems like the jets. Presume that zack wilson from byu. And i mean. There's a lot of rumors that three the san francisco forty niners are really all in on mac jones but we'll find that out next thursday. It's gonna be interesting. I mean outside of the top five quarterbacks in legit all five of them could go for the giants would be ideal for the new york giants. That would be absolutely but outside of those five. It's it's kind of a crap shoot between callum on. I'll trask davis mills. Yeah i actually wasn't surprised to of see the look of pain almost on mark's face when he had to we almost twisted his arm into throwing out his like second and fourth round quarterbacks. This is a very top heavy quarterback draft class and part of that could just be the position. Where if you've got a quarterback who is able to be accommodated starter. He's probably going to be a first rounder and probably a high first

"To this conversation because we were all yelling at each other and marcus i think tim hasselbeck just made an outstanding point in our repeated for everyone just joining us the next time anyone says to you. Well you can win a super bowl with a quarterback who's not that mobile. We just one with tom. Brady reminding. Tim has avec. Just said you were pointing out the greatest outlier in the history of the sport that guys lived and the overwhelming majority of the time. Does it work that way so marcus. That really is the question. If you're going to take a quarterback that high does that quarterback half to half the additional element of the athleticism to use his legs to make place. Yes yes we watch in the league first of all. Let me give context today right like. Did you see all of these forty times that these defensive players ran now. Did you watch aaron donal. Lynn floyd play by the way in that division. Where meg jones is gonna be. This is why people are saying this league is different. Now it does not mean you have to be the standard of athleticism but to be able to get yourself out of trouble. You better be able to move around enough because you are going to have two weeks thin. Plays there are ama- knows on defense. Now it's no longer marcus. Spears's that's three fifteen two gap in and playing the run and then guys come in the rest of the past. These dudes are elite athletes. They are different and that is why everybody is talking about these quarterbacks that have that athleticism trait having success. Look and i'll give you this last point. Because i wanted to hear paul on this and tim. Are we really upgrading. From jimmy garoppolo if we take jones. I think that's the question. A lot of people have to ask now if you tell me. The injuries audit concern. I get it. But it's mac jones really that much of an upgrade over jimmy garoppolo who went to a super bowl lost but went to one. That's the question that i have for everybody that saying jones a perfect fit. It seems to me. Jimmy garoppolo is this health has been the problem there. He's missed forty five percent of the game since he got to san francisco. All right paul. You've heard all of this. What is your perspective and more importantly. What can we expect to hear your caller saying this afternoon on your radio show as they dissect all that has been said here. Let me say this greeny. And i'm just a small town talk show host. I'm not. I didn't play in the nfl. Like my friend. Marcus with tim you know what drives me crazy for all of us to sit here and believe that general managers are going to make the right decision. I'm a fan of the draft. I don't post it. I watch it. And i watched the stupidest decisions made every single spring. And we sit here and act like these guys are curing cove. Come on i mean. I don't trust half the nfl gm's to turn on an iphone correctly. So you think. I'm gonna put my faith on them to make the right decision on mack jones or justin field. No i'm not. I have missed this. I'm sitting here saying why we not had find them on. And that's a perfect example of why. Tim has quick final word. Go.

"Talking to Matt Jones Mac I'm tempted to say this is the stage you'll have been on. But as soon as I say that I think about some of the other ones like at Auburn. In a bowl game against Michigan I mean they're all big and I would think each one of them as a building block. Has helped you but but you know the stake Saturday night, the whole country will be watching. It's It's the biggest game of the year in college football. How do you deal with that the reality of that but also? Shut it out because you can't let it affect your I'm sure. Yeah, I mean, none of that stuff really matters like we're just going to go out there and play. At the end of the day, whoever scores one more point than the other team wins, and that's the goal. So I mean all the other great said and like you said just being those other Games throughout the year and last year just build your confidence and stuff with your teammates. But the guys are how many have played in a lot of big games. So I know that and I know that they're going to do what they do and I just gotTa go out there and get him the ball. And before you go, you mentioned big games nobody has been in more games than your head coach Nick Sabin everyone who's resume every note everyone knows what he means just from a personal standpoint playing for him and now being his quarterback. How was that experience on? Heads Gray. I mean he's the greatest coach in college football and. Just to get an opportunity to be the quarterback I, his team has been great. You know coming here obviously knew that I had to put in a lot of work and he's been a big part of that. Just getting my you know mental side of the game improved and obviously learning a lot about defense from a defense coach. So there's plenty of things that go into it, but you know if you look at it from a big picture, we're just getting started and weekend's big one coming up. So me and him are looking forward to that. Mac I know you got a lot going on. So Busy Day getting ready. For Georgia, we really appreciate you making time and all the best. Saturday. Thanks so much for being here. They appreciate it. You Got Mad Jones starting quarterback at the University of Alabama as the tide gets ready for Georgia, on Saturday night, we are coming right back. Listening to the Paul Finebaum show podcast. And we welcome you back. We welcome you back and there is some news down in by country. The saints ownership not happy with the city of New Orleans, the mayor down there. Has. Repeatedly declined to allow fans in the stands. And they are talking to Lsu today now. I don't think people realize how much money that state puts in that city puts into the saints. What have you done for me lately? We welcome you back. Glad to have you here. Really appreciate MAG Jones for making time Let's go to legend who has already been called out by Gator Fan of Georgia Fan. I can't remember he's been called out by so many and I have lost track good afternoon. On all coach going Oh we are doing well legend. How are you? Man I'm Paul somebody else. Me Out Miss. That I. It was. It was a Georgia fan calling you out. who cares about? You know I I look at this Paul like Muhammad Ali against Ken Norton. I like. Everybody. Knows at Alabama. Muhammad Ali at everybody knows Jill the is chin. So you know and Norton Holly One job I'll give it back. He broke his jaw he. Wasn't Mohammad-ali off. But I impressed with my daddy down with. Young Man. I totally agree I've talked to them before but. I mean he's got it. I mean, he does not. Let. Anything. Bother him. He's unflappable. He has the right demeanor. He knows how to answer the questions that are maybe a little little prickly. Fantastic guy and a great leader. Yeah we're proud as hell met Alabama to Paul, I, mean we couldn't have leader of this team right here and here's the thing about Alabama Paul. We've got the worst defense I, have ever seen. Our watch it all about. Fifty, five, years Paul this. Is. Ever sees then golden he knew go. You at his house today, he goes to pack up and go just as Alabama I'll talk at each a junior cornelius. Bennett. I'm talking Derrick Thomas. Paul I.

"Think I think your mom would have enjoyed this next guest. When we come back, we're going to talk to the starting quarterback at the University of Alabama Mag Jar. You got. Listening to the Paul Finebaum show podcast. You back and we are absolutely delighted to welcome our next guest Jones or starting quarterback at Alabama that only tells part of the story he's. off the chart cheese already listed among the top heisman candidates. I'm sure none of this interest Mac right now, the only thing he cares about is Georgia this weekend first of all, thanks for taking time good afternoon. How's it going? Everything's going good just up here at the facility getting ready for Georgia like you're like you were talking about. Yeah I don't want you to get get you onto many abstract issues, but let's start with Georgia because that is certainly president of mind in Nick Saban operation. You don't think about anything other than next game. So I know I know saving said after the game he wanted to enjoy the game for a couple of minutes I'm sure that is long gone. So what's it been like just getting ready for one of the top teams in the country? Yeah I think. Washing Ole miss film is obviously important. We've obviously moved on from that game and there's a lot of your learning experiences from both sizable offense included I feel like I made a few mistakes in the game that could help us extend some drives and just learning from that. It's been good. But like you said moving onto Georgia obviously, really good defense, I'll be ready to roll this week. Our defense is gonNA play a lot better this week and we're GONNA. Challenge each other you know obviously practice just to to get back to our standard and You know that starts today with our practice and we had a good practice yesterday. So we started the week off strong and really just take it day by day and get ready for this game. Mac. You you know or maybe you haven't thought about it but the media will certainly make a big deal about the Alabama's offense being among the very best in the country versus Georgia's defense, which may very well be the best when you look at the film and I, know you haven't gotten too deep into a but you've seen Georgia play and you see that defense. So it's a trademark Kirby smart defense which. You know we all. We've all seen before. What what do you see on the other side of the ball? Yeah I think those guys obviously do a great job. You Know Kirby everybody playing their gap and everyone's doing their job on defense nobody's trying to make crazy plays. They just do their job, and that's why they're so sound and and that's why the top even in the country. So we have to find ways to. Create plays on offense attack their defense at the end of the day they have great players. We have great players. So it comes down to execution and the team that's the most prepared and ready to play. We'll be the team that comes out on top. Mac I'm curious what this Odyssey has been like for you everyone knows what happened last year when Unexpectedly. You had to come in and replace To A, you did a really commendable job. You got through the season, a tremendous performance in the ballgame and here you are. I know a competitor you expected to to be in this position but what has it been like dealing with everything that comes being the starting quarterback at the University of Alabama Yeah. It's been interesting off season and obviously just getting to play. The first couple of games have been great. You know just to get on the field with my my friends and my teammates and go out there and. Out But obviously it's been really weird and we had to find ways to get better from afar whether that just be at home more on. Zoom. In all the meetings we had. So it's been A. kind of a product of our off just a pretty good star for us. But you know we're back here obviously in Tuscaloosa and we've been here for the past couple months and it's been kind of normal here. You know obviously, we're following all the precautions and procedures that we need to. But we're definitely rolling in the right direction and we're just glad that we get to go out there and play this weekend. Yeah. AMAC everybody is going through it in different ways. It's hard enough being. A quarterback it's hard playing for. Alabama. National contender but. Has the rest of taken at least some mental told you know not so much now but. Back in the spring when nobody really knew what was happening in the summer when you had to kind of find. An create ways a how did you and your teammates endure because it wasn't it couldn't have been easy. Yeah it was definitely hard I just think it goes back to coach saving like he's always one step ahead. So right when we got sent home, we had everything planned out obviously there is some to the plan along the way but. He did a great job just implementing what he wanted to do and making sure that we stayed on top of what we needed to do just day by day kind of taking that philosophy of you gotta be ready as if we're playing tomorrow. So every day just to prepare like that and I feel like everybody on our team have really really good job and obviously getting to come back here it felt more normal but. Just, a really good job in all season. Mac No as a as a leader you don't want to. Single anyone out or leave anyone out..

"Of your phone calls when we come back listening to the Paul Finebaum show podcast. And Welcome Back Reminder Mack Jones the starter Alabama and suddenly heisman contender will join us here in just about twelve minutes and we look forward to that. Let's grab some more calls here in frank is up next. Hey Frank. Paul wanted to see to answer a couple of questions for me please. So topic is Alabama's defense and I'll start with one that may not seem directly connected but back in two, thousand, sixteen They. Basically fired lane. Do you remember what what the reason was for letting him go? Yes I do the circumstances were these kiffin had accepted a job at Florida? Atlantic. And had agreed to stay until the end of the season Alabama played Washington in the semi finals. The offense was Thar. GIC. Sabin felt like Kiffin had checked out. So one week to the day before the National Championship game against Clemson he let him go. Yeah exactly. But one other comment that nick made was this is what was best for the team. Right So if we now take that in apply that to our defense. And what's going on with respect to? Pete Golden and. Running the defense and this is not something new with respect to him struggling it appears. Can you help me? What Nick maybe thinking with respect to keeping Pete. And not, inserting Charlie even if that's possible Charlie strong So I'm not even sure of all the details around how we might be able to use him for our defense but. Kind of walk me through your thoughts on why we would not be able to use Charlie as defensive coordinator. If we let laying go one week before the fantasy game. Why would we not do this? Here on staff, we'll remember something. So, Kiffin was let go. As you just said that man, there was a position available so then you could move. Sark up into that position. So right now, in terms of pure numbers game, there is not a position available Charlie Charlie strong as a consultant there are limitations to what a consultant can do. but. I don't think. I don't think he could be in the booth calling the plays right now. We're on the sideline I should say. Not Not. Allowed capability. Yes. That doesn't mean Charlie's not more involved or active in the meetings which. Are Bit he is. Yeah Yeah I just wanted your insight on because it to me. It seems like we're struggling. This is the best team. The logic applies we've got a great defensive coordinator on staff I agree that. Maybe. We're not using him as well. Maybe. You know first of all Charlie strong is still being paid elsewhere I I presume and but those are things that can be worked out pretty quick. Yeah. Paul Hey. Thanks. Thank you. Looking forward to that interview with Mac Jones thank you very much. Great to have you and I know there's a lot. There's a lot of speculation go around Tuscaloosa. Charles is up next Hey Charles Welcome to the program. Good afternoon. On there you just going. Great. I am a long-time listener, a first time caller. Thank you I. Just called to say.
