Lutron is trying to solve this pesky light problem

"So interested. In products like this, and I'll tell you what it is. It's called the lutron lutron you can try on Unix really good dimmer switches, we have a couple of lutron in our house lutron of style. They're pretty good. They I feel like they work in home kit. But I think home kid is hot garbage don't use it. But I think it does work with home kit. But but what, what this is is. Did you click Lincoln? Look at it. I have not yet it does a couple of neat things. So basically, you get this little round thing, the circumference or diameter of which will become size will become clear in a minute. And basically you put it over a light switch, which is in the on position. Okay. Okay. So the first thing that this thing does that we all run into in our legacy houses is you don't want people turning off your light switches, if you're trying to control that with smart home stuff. Yeah. So in my case Hubel like we have not the typical eight twelve bulbs, we've got those like those little bulbs with two prongs on it for the light. Like five of those on an iky alight arm thing. What do you call that? What are you can call that, you know, like you put it up on the ceiling? And then you get the claiming kinda like that. I know what you mean anyway. Yeah. So don't you know, hey I bought these very inexpensive. Little things mostly for dealing with babies. But it's a thing you put over your switches, so that nobody can discourages people from turning them off, on one hand, yes. This does that this goes over a once which light switch that keeps it on. But guess what? That's circle dingus. You're putting on top of it isn't affords. Well, it's a dimmer. It's a lutron dimmer goes on, on, on top of their so that you now have a way you can click the button to turn on. Or you can spin it to change the lights and I just thought that was such a clever idea, because I was talking to my lady about this this morning. I was like, don't worry, so like so many of my conversations with her begins with don't worry. I'm not going to buy this. Like Joe worry the thing I'm gonna talk about now does not represent a. Eruption or purchased purchase? But like isn't this kind of cool, you know, like, for us, the blind the Hugh tap switch thing? Buying several of those for our house was really win. The smart home stuff really changed for us smart. I mean like your mileage may vary. If you're if you're twenty years, old, and of these all checked out and you don't mind talking to a device at her lights on and off, like being able to do that. But believe me, the rest of the family is not loving that as the only way to control light when we got those taps, which is, which I've talked about before it gives you three buttons in an off button. You can have three different scenes. You can do all kinds of crazy stuff. I have one downstairs at our house. So when I'm leaving I hit that and it turns off everything when with one of the buttons. I just look a little. So when our conversation today, the reason I mentioned, this is I was saying to her, like, for, now personally me professionally, even I'm gonna continue to look forward to more power user stuff with smart home devices, more interactively, that's, you know, secure in cool more automates, but I still really feel like you're not gonna get anywhere near the fat part of the curve on this stuff until you improve and enhance the interactions for dealing with this. Right. Having it only be something you can control with your frigging ipad or your MAC in home kit. Not crazy helpful.

Google, Amazon And Hugh discussed on This Week In Google

"Basically at Google ios said it took nest from a series of devices that have historically had their own intelligence and agency. So it there is a direct API that lets you control them in the nest devices talk to your stuff and vice versa by killing the works with nest program and switching it all through the Google assistant in Google home. What it's done. Is it stuck the Google home in as a middleman? So now, think of the nest of ISIS zombies, they are now controlled via the Google home, and this is bad news for a lot of companies it was sudden news for many companies. So every company out there that has worked with has done a worked with nest works with nest integration now has to go back in basically build a routine through Google includes if this then that includes if it includes Hugh, and includes lutron it includes bid. Includes Amazon anybody who's been controlling their Amazon or their nest thermostat through their Amazon echo. Amazon has to work with Google now through this and Amazon. We'll get their own. It's not a skill so routine or some sort of integration. So this isn't this isn't great. I mean, if you don't have a Google home, you're going to be like, whoa. Cramp nine eat some sort of home device from Google in my house to control my nest, Android device. Your Android phone. Well, you can, but you can't do it when you're away because there's not a device. Yeah.

"Works with this was the smart home platform that let your nest thermostat or your drop Cam or whatever work with a lot of other smart home products. Usually using the thermostat is the hub. Now strategy will focus on the works with Google assistant program, which as we noted Tuesday has more restrictions on how it uses data and what it can do which is good. But the other side of this is that nest ecosystem is shutting down on August, thirty first and the verge notes that's going to affect Amazon Philips, hue ift, Logitech harmony, lutron lights, August home. And we most switches among others, apparently Google is working with Amazon to migrate the nest skill to the Google home, Google assistant platform, so that may not being a problem, but all of these others will. This is I mean, I had a friend of mine who I can't say that. We're this family friendly podcast lost his collective earlier this year because Irish shut down, and he had thousands of dollars of hardware and time invested in. "Like I, we just got a, we replaced our ceiling fan of our kitchen table last year, and I was very interested in putting a home kit ceiling fan because they exist, but there just wasn't enough variety and it just they just didn't really have the ones I wanted. So ultimately I didn't do that, but, but you know, you can make the ceiling fan turn on if you've got the home kit ceiling fan, but now you don't even need to do that. And I just get the switch, which which are you talking about? You can get a lutron switch do. That's what I do. With my ceiling fan so they have a lutron. Yeah, I think you need for some reason that wasn't compatible with my. It's like isn't kind radio receiver that you put into the ceiling fan. No, it's just an on off switch. If you're fan is controlled by an on off switch at the wall, then the lutron switch will work. It will also turn the light off and on on the fan. All of my fans are separately switched to have lights on one switch and the fan on a separate switch wine is not all at the look into that though. It still would be nice if I could just control the fan that the I. I knew Ron made that well, that's that that can be easily rewired. That's probably a deal while. Yeah, depends on how comfortable you are with wiring that could be rewired. I could probably do that. You're right. Well, after I finished paying for the home office renovation right now, I'm I'm done with home improvement for a while. If you can't do it yourself, it wouldn't be that expensive. But the question is whether you should do it. That's a whole nother story. So anyway, so I think we've a any other thoughts about the actual home kit app and how it's configured. There is a there are a couple of other menus. The one other menu is the the home menu, which is in the upper left of the app, and that's just where you can do things like a couple of configurations of the home. So for starters, you can name your home. I just called mine home. There probably are other ways you could name your home. And the other thing is they do have you can insert your own picture of the individual room. So as you swipe to the rooms, you see a picture of the room or something I Kana of that room. I think that's a good idea just because the the app is so unintuitive as it is. I think if you can add any way to make it easier for your eyes to get to the right place and push the right button, that's a good thing. You also you have to have in order for this to work when you're not in your home with your IOS device, you're going to have to have a home. Hub setup and this is easier now than it used to be..

"And it was a mixture of Hugh and then with Selena, or would lutron this'll Vania bulbs that are that are new or and they and they run cooler to like in the bathroom, we've got there's vanity, light setups, like maybe like ten bulbs and they're those. I don't know what they're called had. It's been awhile since that work on this, but they get really hot and it's like those cannot be energy efficient. Like it's almost like a little heater when they're turned on. But yeah, the halogen one, yeah. So you've got one. Lutron wall switch from those on like all of them because it's it would be one might switch so versus replacing the bulbs. And that's nice. And the last thing that is that the the wall switch is in the bathroom. So you would need to go into the bathroom to the corner of it to turn it on for those lights. And there are two other lights that you get to before that. But if you only wanna use those those, then you need to go into the bathroom to get to it. And so with lutron, they give you a little, they call it a PICO remote and you can mount it to the wall, and I put that in front of the bathroom, so you can turn on the light as you enter it versus like being in the bathroom. So it's nice. So, yeah, I mean, if you're doing a hump get home, especially if you're like building a house or you own your own home and you're not going to be moving every year every couple years. It's so worth it to go the light switch out and it's it's cool that has some options. Now I d agree elevators. Do any like emissions with the like? Do you have them turn on all my. Later and all that type of stuff. And the only thing I do is at sun set local, turn on and then at ten pm turn off you can. You can do sunrise off to battle, need the lights to the outside light. So there's a front porch light a, like parking garage area, light in all the backyard lights, and they're all in his zone called outside. And those all turn on McKnight and then off later in the evening so that I'm never like I, I look at my neighbor's house and they've got, you know, it's like nine AM, ten AM and this the been bell for a while and then lights are still on outside, and I just want to like, turn them off so bad. The only thing I do, but I don't do anything inside. Like one thing you could do is with a presence answer. If presence is not detected to turn off the light, you know, I think that would be useful, especially in my house. My bedroom fan gets left on all the time when no one's in there in that. Those halogen lights, the bathroom lights, get less on. Those use a lot of energy. So the fan and those lights and I.

"Including knocking over a wall new cabinets appliances everything i'm a smart things you're about twenty it things currently besides considering smart appliances like the june oven and others what are the top few it things you'd recommend idea in the kitchen giving that i'm in that unique situation of a clean slate to work with smart switches on overhead lighting are definite for me so i'm gonna do that but do you have any other recommendations thanks again oh dan i so so envious of you i hope you're going for one of those big farmhouse sinks because personally when we did arken i said no i don't need anything like that and i regret it every day so don't let this happen to you except on your smart stuff because i guarantee in five years you're gonna be like a probably made the wrong choice just because it's changing so much my first recommendation to you is yes smart switches pick your favorite i'm going to offer to you if your kitchen is an open floor plan because you mentioned you were knocking out a wall i might actually take that opportunity to try the noon smart home lights because i've been really intrigued in this is a product designs the lights for you it detects what kind of lighting you have and then build scenes around it for you ought to medically i think it's kind of compelling and it's kind of expensive but wrapped in a reynaud it could definitely work and it all depends though if you're doing an open floor plan if not then go with the straight up i recommend lutron because they're my favorite you will need a hub but it's an operator i would also install some smart outlets with usb ports in them if you're gonna go with smart outlet as beers wave should be just fine you may depending on your current ecosystem choose zippy because their support for it from the echo has automatic zubi support in there but i don't think it really matters and that way you don't have to have these outlets cramming things up but you'll still have that ability to turn appliances on an off and to be able to charge your connected devices has for smart appliances.
