County health officials also reported another 35 death today, increasing the total to 3405. A Corona virus outbreak in a Bay Area prison has been traced back to an inmate transfer from Pacino facility in late May. I'm Ari Shapiro and I, Mary Louise, Kathy, and we're beginning this hour of the program doing something we almost never do. Playing exactly the same piece of tape. We played you yesterday, playing it again because it is so striking and it raises so many questions. Here it is. This is Anthony found she the top infectious disease expert in this country. On how covert 19 could be about to get much worse. We're now having 40 plus 1000 new cases a day. I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 day. If this does not turn around, and so I am very concerned. Dr Fauci testifying there before Congress yesterday. So what would it take to turn this around? We've asked him to take our questions today. And he is here with us now. Dr Fauci welcomed all things considered. Thank you very much. It's good to be with you Allow me to sharpen that question. Can we turn this around? Can we turn these numbers around without an even more aggressive shut down than we had in March and in April I believe the answer is yes, but we have to do things a bit differently than what we've been doing. Because when you talk about the goal of everyone to try and proceed towards normalization by taking steps In the opening America Again program, which were guidelines that had good and well demarcated benchmarks. What we saw and it really varied from state to state. With people out there congregating in bars, congregating in crowds in a celebratory way, understandably because they felt cooped up without wearing masks. That is, you know, in many respects if I might use the word, it's a violation of the principles of what we're trying to do. And that is the social distancing the wearing of mass. So it's really in our hands as a community as a nation as the populous to make this happen. It does not have to be 100,000 cases a day. I use that number. Because I wanted Jeff to jolt people into realizing you've got our attention, so we did, and that's exactly what I wanted to do because as I've said so many times over the previous weeks, two months If you leave the virus to its own devices, it will take off on you. The control of an outbreak is what we do to oppose the dynamics of the outbreak. And if you do things that essentially enhance the outbreak, then you're part of the problem. You're not part of the solution. You've just said a couple of things I want to follow up on. You talked about how things have varied so much state to state. You use the word guidelines a supposed to requirements. Does there need to be more of a coordinated federal plan? Do there need to be requirements? Or is it wise to have the strategy remain leaving this large later states and local governments to figure it out? No Maryland, you bring up a good point, And there's a lot of argument about that about how this country is set up where you have the states that have the capability of making decisions because of the different and peculiar. Nature of things that go on in different states from a public health perspective. Would it be better if the federal government were taking a more sort of role? Well, it might not be. I mean, I'm one that does taken assertive role if you hear What I say Whenever I'm talking as I am on this program, you know, it is really saying that we must do these things hopefully and I'm seeing it right now, after yesterday's numbers came out Had many of the governors and mayors are actually demanding and saying it is mandatory. Now, if you're gonna go out, you have to have a mask on that is something that is absolutely essential, but you're right. There will be arguments. I'm one from or directive way of doing things, but in many respects, that's not the way this country works. So what do you say to the governors to our two local leaders who are not rolling things back? Somebody like Florida Governor Rhonda Santis, where they on Saturday recorded the highest single day increase thus far, nearly 10,000 new cases and he says Florida Is open and he's not going to go back on reopening. Well, what I do is two things and I've been doing it consistently and intensively as I do it publicly like I have the opportunity to do on your program. And I get on the phone, and I've been on the phone with a lot of different governess talking to them about what I think should be done. I have been very prescriptive in what I said. I said not think about it. Maybe you want to do it. I say, do it. This is what you really need to do if you want to contain the outbreak in your state or in your city, depending upon whether I'm talking to a governor or a mayor or somebody else..

"And welcome to the show. Thank you. Thank great to have you by the way, you kept your word you said during a phone conversation weeks ago that you like so much personal your home. Really heavy and said I want to be in person, and you actually came in. And I'm like, I don't like to say that kind of stuff that's away fake stuff. See we'll have lunch. I actually at the point our go. I wanna have lunch to do. But yet, but you really don't actually want to go with me. To do that. Once we said, I maybe fake it sometimes. But now, I don't I don't anymore. Not actually and catching up on people. I said, you know, we've always said, let's let's hear you'd success better than most people. So, you know. But on a semi while you're greatest I've watched for years that's did unshielded on full house. And you're a great TV that I wasn't aware to be honest things welcome. When I was watching that show initially that you're so filthy on stage. So when I saw that I said, this guy is really an amazing talent. Because he's the perfect TV down on one hand. He's filthy on stage on the other to me that says, this guy has talent that is just unknown. Just outrageous. I don't even have to speak to keep going. Very well. But it's all true. Absolutely, right. Look the stand up comedy, by the way that was your first passion. I mean, I was seventeen I started. And but I always loved acting. And that's what I started doing. So I studied stand up I was doing doing improv in Philly. I went the foam schools do four things all the same. None of them. Well, then I moved to LA, and I started instead of going to grad school. I ended grad school that I got in. I ended up going to the comedy store and Letterman was my first MC, and we should prior to the young comedians with the Rodney Rodney started me out. I'll tell you internees. Oh, man. Respect was he one of your influences. The first time I met him. I walked twenty four he walks into a club in San Diego. He goes, you got a problem. And you gotta you gotta Jewish at you. Never stop thinking. You'll never gonna be. Never going to be happy. Then it was like a new friend. They think about Rodney was he's favorite. We love him. If you will really close with Rodney that at some point you had to cocaine with money as well. I didn't I didn't really well. When I got to LA it was the early nineteen seventy eight. So I did it with other people. Right. You couldn't avoid it. I mean, it was like it was studio fifty four. There was for me. It was the comedy, right? It was the same thing improv. So that while you look you wear glasses you looking to count. A totally percent. But anybody I could have that history. I mean, we all have that history. Yeah. We do we do. And and the point is not to burn out there. The people that I loved so much that it really messed up their nervous system, and they died or some died showing some some never recovered. So when did you if you will pointing big time early career, the good news is at an have enough money to party big picked struggled for so long for eight years to get a decent job. And then I wound up a Richard Pryor movie. Right. And those critical condition after the fire that happened to them. Yeah. So he was he was a non user at that point. So it was a healthy time for me. So I didn't get involved because how do you say no to Richard, right? Even by the way. People listening felon offers you drugs, it doesn't mean you have to take doesn't know. Jones hard to say. Right now, you clean guy even drink. Maybe. I like I did a show last night out in red Bank at at that count. Basie? Great place is wonderful. But I did have a little bit of scotch when little bit. It's just a little bit. Get nervous nerves. Dart's. I could be in front of a thousand or thirty thousand or on television. You talking to millions doesn't right doesn't it. Good. Over forty forty five years forty really that is the way to be now, you just ventured out in something new that you're very proud of you got a movie coming out. Yeah. Benjamin. It's coming on something called red bot. Now red box is that thing in front of places. So my friends razzing me, and I'm going no, this is really really cool because these guys have a lot of money, and they they have forty one thousand kiosks not making a movie for photo every seven eleven every supermarket place the new net flicks. That's the point of this about Tina, Louise. Kathy griffin. This.
