Tony Awards Preview
"Hi, everybody. It's Peter Travers than welcome to our special popcorn Tony award show. Now, I've gotta say, before we get into the nominees about who will win and who should win. This is been the most amazing year in Broadway history. It has made over two billion dollars at the box office that never happened. And why is it? I think it's Hollywood heat everybody from TV from movies from us. It wants to be on Broadway. They wanna be on that stage. You got this year. Kylo Ren and driver on Broadway. You have Walter, white Bryan, Cranston, there, Jeff Daniels who played Harry done in too, dumb and dumber movies. They're all fighting to be best, dramatic actor, what kind of stuff is happening on Broadway. Well, let's start with the major categories, and I'm gonna start with best musical the nominees are ain't too, proud the life and times of the temptations Beetlejuice remember that movie Haiti's town, the prom, and Tootsie. You remember that movie too? Well. I think the winner is Haiti's town. It's a rigid. It's basically the myth of Orpheus ritzy, but it's got a score by a woman named Naess Mitchell who doesn't come from Broadway, at all and kind of revolutionizes it. So what would happen what could spoil the fun? There's a little musical called the prom. It's really it's totally original. It's about these bunch of Broadway veterans, and they're really hard bitten, and they're not getting any press, and they decide to go to Indiana and help, a lesbian high school student take her girlfriend to the prom. That's it. How good is it? It's really good. And in terms of the Hollywood connection, Ryan Murphy, went to see it fell in love with it, and he's making a movie of it. So how about that? Then we have best play the Ferryman choirboy, Gary a sequel to Titus andronicus. What the constitution means to me an ink. I'm telling you people, the Ferryman is got to be a movie soon. It's an Irish play. It's about the troubles, and in on a stage. We get to see an entire family deal with violence deal with their own feuds. We've got babies onstage. We've got live alive goose. We have everything there's nothing like I don't think there's any competition for it at all except there was a snub, the most successful play in Broadway history. That's not a musical is to kill among bird, and for some reason, the Tony nominee said, let's not nominated what I want. Answer on that one best revival of a play. Arthur, Miller's all my sons the boys in the band, burn this torch song and the Waverley gallery. I think Arthur Miller's all my sons which brought a net. Bending back to Broadway is a show that he wrote in one thousand nine hundred forty seven a bout a guy who was manufacturing airplane, parts and was to rush to do it. And so the planes crashed and killed pilots during the war. We live in the world of Boeing. Now, how timely could this be? So I think that's really up there. And I in terms of seeing a show that by playwright Arthur Miller who says, let's deal with the world we live in this one really, really did it then we have bible of musical. This is easy, because there's only two there's Oklahoma Rogers and Hammerstein Oklahoma and kiss me. Kate. Of course, they were both movies. We saw Oklahoma with Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in the fifties. But kiss me, Kate is done in a traditional way. Kelli o'hara's in it, Oklahoma is directed by guide named Daniel fish who find darkness. We're Rogers and Hammerstein only found light. It's a revelation to watch this. It's not the Oklahoma you've ever remembered, and it sung in the kind of country western way, look, if you ever get to see this on Broadway or win a tours get there get there quick. Okay. Okay. Best actor in a musical. And so, we'll do alphabetically Brooks as Mantas in the prom, Derrick Baskin and ain't too, proud the life and times of the temptations Alex Brightman and Beetlejuice. Remember when Michael Keaton had their part, Damon down, oh in Rogers and Hammerstein, Oklahoma. And send Tino fun Tanna into okay? The favorite is Tino, Tanna who is playing the part that destined Hoffman immortalized in the movie in the nineteen eighties. But what Centeno Tanna doesn't remember him on TV in crazy ex girlfriend like I'm saying everybody's from TV, or he does so much more. He sings as a man sees a woman, he does physical comedy does everything but stand on his hat. And I say, you know, who's out there that can spoil the win for Santino Tanna. And my answer is no one because this is one of the great performances you'll ever see on a musical, comedy stage. He's the winner. Best actress in a play Benning in Arthur, Miller's all my sons, Laura, Donnelly, in the Ferryman. Elaine may in the Waverley gallery, Janet mcteer in Bernhardt hamlet, Laurie Metcalf in Hillary Clinton, and Heidi Shreck in what the constitution means to me. Okay. Elaine may doesn't win this Tony. You're going to hear from me. She's eighty seven years old. She's returned to Broadway. After decades to play the part of a woman fighting Alzheimer's, and everything is no perfect about what she's done. She started with Mike Nichols doing comedy. She was starring in movies of like the new leaf directed things like the heartbreak kid. She's just one of the best actors I've ever seen anywhere. And if she loses and, you know, I feel bad for an bending because if Elaine may wasn't here this year, I think she would be the winner, but come on. Attention must be paid people. And I also wanna talk about a snub how. How does Glenda Jackson who won the Tony last year for three women returned to Broadway as King Lear? We talk about the age of hashtag metoo and time's up Glenda. Jackson is playing king. Lear gets rave reviews and the Tony committee says we're not gonna nominate her now. No, we're paying attention. And we're gonna come back and get you our best actress in a musical. Stephanie, j block in the share show Caitlyn Kanoun in the prom Beth level, in the prom, Eva nobles, ADA in Haiti's town, and Kelley O'Hara and kiss me cake. Stephanie j block who is that theater veteran is playing share in a way that sometimes she's more share than share. You might think this is just an escapist show thing to know she finds the character of who she is share shows up at this show often does numbers with her, and pus share. There's who's a bigger Hollywood. Name who is coming to Broadway with the show about herself. It takes three actresses to play here. But Stephanie j block plays the central one. And she plays the hell out of it. So she has just got to win. I'm sorry, people. All right. Best featured actress in a play for new of Flanagan in the Ferryman seal, you keep. And Bolger into kill a Mockingbird. Christine Nelson, Gary a sequel to Titus andronicus Julie white and Gary sequel to Titus andronicus and Ruth Wilson and King Lear people if you see if you see to kill among bird, and you should seal, you Keenan Bolger is very controversial because she's playing scout scout in the book and in the movie remember is in eight or nine year old girl. A C Keenan Bolger is in her forties. And yet, what she finds in this character who grew up to be Harper who wrote this novel is the heart and soul of the peace. So I'm telling you people this, this has got to happen. See Keenan Bolger remember that name best featured actor in a play birdie Carville and ink, Robin to hasten boys in the band getting Glick into kill a monkey bird, Brandon your Ranna wits in burn this Benjamin Walker in Arthur Miller's. All my sons birdie, Carville in ink. Those of us, those of you who actually went to Broadway couple of years ago and saw of any kind of a musical where you were shocked at a man playing a woman, you saw birdie, Carville in Matilda, and he played this woman, this horrible headmistress, and now he's playing Rupert Murdoch. So every who in Hollywood, who in politics would anyone hasn't been in an Rupert Murdoch publication or paper and who hasn't been rolled over the coals in it that performance and in London when he played it in one and Olivia ward, he had to play it in front of Rupert Murdoch. It's just an incredible job. I wanna talk a little about the snubs in this category. The non nominees there isn't actor named Bengal Arghanab into Killa mugging bird who plays Tom Robinson. He is the black man who is on trial for raping a white woman, a crime never committed. And he's defended. By Jeff Daniels. Atticus Finch when Aaron Sorkin adapted Harper Lee's novel to the stage. He did it so that he could expand the role of the black characters as he did here. And again, the Tony committee, decided only to nominate the white actors from tequila, Mockingbird ignoring the two black actors who are just brilliant in their roles. You people you're going to get called on the carpet. You need to all right? Best featured actress in a musical, Lilli Cooper in Tootsie, amber, gray and Haiti's town Sarah, styles Tootsie, alley stroke, or in Rogers and Hammerstein Oklahoma and Mary, Testa in Rogers, and Hammerstein Oklahoma there, something totally remarkable that happened this year in stroke, and Oklahoma. This is a woman who when she was two years old was in an automobile crash, and was never able to walk again. And now on Broadway playing eight oh Anne who is like the sexual. Time bomb in Oklahoma, the one who sings, I can't say, no, the part went to Allie. Stroke, she plays it in a wheelchair and you would think that's inspiring enough. But when you watch her play at you, forget the wheelchair exists, and you're watching her take over the stage like Dolly Parton. She, it's just an amazing thing to watch and it works on so many levels. So I wanna be there when she wins that Tony, and I want to be standing up and applauding and going Bravo. She deserves all right. Best featured actor in a musical Andre shields in Haiti town and a groups Luccin. That's a good name into Patrick page in Haiti's town germy, pope in into proud the life and times of the temptations and Ephraim Sykes ain't too, proud the life and times of the temptations, the favorite, the one, I think will win is under the shields and Haiti's town. He's seventy three years old. He stands on that stage is the narrator in like a silver suit. In total control of body and every movement and pulls you in till you're memorized. Your mesmerizing you not take your eyes off of hundred shields. This is a veteran actor who needs to get this Tony. But what if he didn't who would go to there's a young actor named Jeremy pope who plays Eddie kendricks in the into proud the life and times of the temptations? And who does he's playing a difficult man. One of the most difficult of the temptations. But one of the most talented as well. He's also nominated this year as best actor in a in a play in choir, boy, this is to me, the brightest newcomer that you will see on the stage and you're going to see him everywhere, stage movies television. It's just the beginning. So if you get to see this, you're going to be able to tell your friends, I was there win. Okay. Best director of a play Rupert Gould for Inc. Sam Mendes for the Ferryman Bartlett. Fair for to kill a mocking bird Ivo von Hosver for network, and George C Wolfer Gary a sequel to Titus andronicus Sam Mendis in the Ferryman this play. Does a job on stage that equal to his first movie which was American Beauty, which you may remember won the best picture? Oscar and once Mendis the Oscar as best director.
Annette Bening and Laurie Metcalf nominees for 2019 Tony Awards
"Great news also for an Benning as we mentioned he's being nominated full. All my sons. I'm actually fortunately for me Sally field in that same role tonight. He in London Laurie Metcalf though, four nominations in four years. Yeah. The New York Times recently, Chris and Laurie Metcalf, the first lady of Broadway, and I think actually people believe that it's not just hype she has had huge success on television, as we know and onscreen lady bird for which he was nominated for an Oscar. She was wonderful. But her heart really belongs to the theater as she is the first tell anyone she's already announced next season. She'll return to Broadway in one of the most iconic of all plays Virginia Woolf assuming she gets nominated for an who Tony for that. And I don't see why she shouldn't be that would be five nominations and five years, and she just seems to want to do theatre do I mean who's afraid of wolf anyone who's unaware is one of those options that if you are an actor, and you get to being this role of like the play version of gypsy isn't an yet to play this role and you'll good sure to be nominated for every would under the sun. So good news fil Hori. It seems.
'Hadestown' Lead 2019 Tony Nominations
"The new musical Haiti's town dominated the Tony nominations, the unconventional folksy musical received nominations in fourteen categories. Neither to kill a Mockingbird nor network was nominated in the best new play category. Even though both costly productions were huge hits at the box office. They didn't come away empty-handed though to kill a Mockingbird was nominated for nine awards and network received five nominations, the big names receiving nominations. "The rents are actively nothing even in this. The my argument was to light up right in the front office. They had all the known I three rooms and just is lovely the right out onto amity kitchen and the Acura look out on lookout and Ross mccartan was. Akram? Peg number. Everything she's saying is wrong. He's getting all all the names of things wrong. And this was so wonderfully written that it was a character that you, you know, I think somebody said, you you you would kill yourself if you were caught on a long bus ride with this person. And so it, and it's just she's just. Beyond stupid. And it goes from being a character that you would totally right off to someone who is very very deeply moving at the end. And that that that was the brilliance of the writing and that that's why I think that people the monologue stood stood out. So so well because it was just something that you hadn't seen you didn't expect it you thought. Okay. I know this person right off the bat and then by and then fifteen minutes later, you're you're sobbing because of what she's saying. You were not an accomplished screen actor when you were cast on Roseanne. No, I'd never done anything. No, no. I take that back. I had done one movie. Yeah. You were in desperately seeking Susan. Did you like move to Los Angeles and start auditioning for sitcoms or well, I went to I was in Chicago doing plays back to back to back. And then I had and then, you know, went to New York to do bombing Gilead and off of that I got cast in desperately seeking Susan and I thought okay. Well, that was a, you know, just a one time only film shot or would have then it went back to Chicago more plays more plays. And then I thought you know, what maybe all Gary Sinise had moved out to LA, and he was having some good luck getting some TV work. I think and I thought maybe I'll go out to LA I'll give it to weeks. I'll stay on somebody's couch. And see if I can get a movie, and then it just so happened that the same casting directors who cast desperately seeking Susan were casting Roseanne, and they were in LA, and I happened to be there. I mean, literally in the right place at the right time. And I went in and read for them. They didn't even have the sides written for the sister. So I read Roseanne sides, and I got the part. And then I thought oh, I don't know though, TV role. What if I end up getting typecast in there like, you know, what you'd be an idiot to pass on this? So I took it. And luckily, it was just one of the best written sitcoms ever every one of the best sitcoms ever. I know that you can't yell at the acting because you were one of the actors, but all around one of the greatest television shows ever made. Yeah. I mean, I how about this. Let's hear a scene from Roseanne. And my my guest is Laurie Metcalf. And if you don't remember well Roseanne, well, great news. You get to watch Roseanne for the first time. But Laurie played Jackie who was Roseanne sister Roseanne was the lead in the show alongside John Goodman. And so in this clip from the show, Jackie and Rosanna are finding out that their dad passed away and Roseanne is sitting at I think it's a kitchen table and Jackie is. Is talking on one of those phones that hangs on the wall and Roseanne has made her Colorado give to to break the news that that their dad has died, Barbara it's Jackie Jackie on fine. Fine. I and some bad news that is not with us anymore. I said dad has passed away. He's passed away. Dad is. Fine. Law doing that. Again, you can't. Who wrote that who's norm? Norm mcdonald? Well that little bit. Yeah. He's got a wicked sense of humor. You know? He was one of the writers on this Roseanne reboot. He came into right? He was sitting there in. He was sitting there in in a room with my buddy..

"And so those were really easy to connect to. But I was also really thankful that Greta peppered in the the moments of heart between the the mom and daughter, and where they are on the same page there comforting each other or their reminiscing about or they're having a very nice shared experience together. This is we're just seeing them during this dysfunctional moment in their lives. It's never always been this way. And it won't stay this way. But what I was really shocked when I sat in an audience for the first time and listen to it watched it hearing, some of the language come out of my characters mouth because in playing it. I knew where that character was coming from. And it was a from a place of heart actually of wanting to help of wanting to you know, kick this kid's ask and get hurt into gear. And and make her, you know, just sit up and start to appreciate things, and you know, everything that the mother wants for her daughter, but to hear it come out in such an aggressive way. When I watched it was really startling to me. And really did make me think of how I have phrased things to my own kid. Kids. Was there anything that greater gerwig told you about what she wanted the character to be in what she wanted the film to be beyond? What was on the page? No. I think it was all on the page it really she had worked so carefully on the script so meticulously that by the time we got to the set. There was never that. Weird scrambled that you can have some times where everybody looks at each other and says, well, this isn't working now. What do we do because we have to get this shot in, you know, the next three hours we were all on the same page. We had a couple of days of rehearsal not days of few meetings where Greta would spend with either as many of us together as as as could in in whatever city that we were in or certian I got to spend a couple of days with her in her apartment or at her office in LA right before we were about to shoot just to make sure we were on the same page. Just to make sure that if we were going to have another antagonistic seen together that we didn't wanna make it the same as the one before it because there's a lot of that throughout the the film with the mother and the daughter, and so we wanted to parse out, you know, who was actually triggering it. This time around who was being passive aggressive. Who was who was interpreting whatever with something benignly said, you know, in an antagonistic way, you know, mix it up like that. So all of the the battles weren't the same. There is kind of an amazing blend of textures in those relationships as I see them. I mean, it's something that I have with my mom, but I don't feel like it's the same. Which is there's a lot of just kind of like there's a lot of kind of poking and falling back. And I don't think it was a relationship that I had seen before in a film that kind of. Of there's a lot of bruise pressing. But not a lot of dressing down. You know?.
ABC's ‘The Conners’ Premiered Without Roseanne. How Did It Go?
"Why this surprised me because I mean there have been some good reviews. But Neil Justin in the Star Tribune who covers the TV in media. Here's what he wrote the Connors is even better without disgraced Roseanne. Wow. ABC sitcom is heartbreaking. But also hilarious. I was surprised. Yeah. Here's what he wrote ABC game. Critics look at two episodes of the new series, but only on the condition. That they not reveal how Roseanne CONNER is no longer in the picture fine. What can be said is that the explanation seems completely natural as if the writers new last year that the character might disappear it's heartbreaking, but also hilarious. He goes on to write laughing inappropriately is what mom taught us to do says older daughter Becky in Tuesday's premier. The overshadowed cast mates Neil rights overshadowed, sometimes by Roseanne finally gets to do more than bicker. Especially the sisters. And she said that Laura he said rather Laurie Metcalf as Jackie has a scene in which Jackie edges toward like a breaking point while rearranging the kitchen and Neil says that that scene alone could earn her a fourth EMMY suites. Yeah. He writes bars contributions can't be brushed under the couch her brand of dark humor along with her insistence in Americans struggling to pay the bills should command center stage remained vital the series. The disgrace star may not be in a position to unleash one of her signature cackles, but viewers have every reason to roar. Roar and breathe a sigh of relief. So that's what Neil rights today. Four stars. I was it's interesting that Neil wrote this because last night, I wrote I think it was Vanity Fair. Esquire got together with some former writers of Roseanne from the original run and some talked. Under the condition of being anonymous and said, it was fifty fifty some said that the show they wished the show the best. And there were there were two from the original run that said, look, no matter how disgraced no matter how much you don't like her personally. It's very hard to replace a lead of a show. And you have to have this one writer was like here's the deal. It takes a certain this is almost verbatim. It takes a certain personality type to lead lead sitcom Roseanne had it and it's hard to fill that void. With an ensemble. And the writer said, I don't know if it's a he or she. But the writer said they love John John Goodman, love Laurie Metcalf and love Sara Gilbert, they said, but none of them have that X factor that can lead a show Louis Metcalf. Could do it you do. Yeah. And I feel like this back in the day Roseanne did. But not now when this rebuild came back. I thought are acting was awful me to see eye gla-. I said the same thing I thought I remember our review after the premiere of the reboot I thought Roseanne's timing which she was known for her her timing was always very natural. I think we went back that day that we talked about it on this show. I went back, and I watched two of her routines on Carson and her delivery in the standard was like she was telling us a story her her acting in the premiere last year was very stilted. It was like she was reading. It was very Rattatte her reading of the lines. It seemed like lines. I think she felt uncomfortable. Doing this whole reboot. I listened to. She was a guest on the Joe Rogan podcast. Oh, you listen to that. I listened to the whole thing. Yes. She kind of mentioned in that that you know, in terms of the in the writer's room. She wanted to have a different voice be represented. She's like, yes, you can have all of the Trump jokes all you want. But at the same time there needs to be some balance here. So she would fight for. Digs on her character voted for Trump. And so she said I want to have some kind of balance here because our people would have voted for him. Back in the Connors we represent. Yes. That's what we would have represented, or at least let's have some some play back and forth. And she said that she it was not very receptive in the writer's room. So for sure I think that that first season it was already feeling uncomfortable. And when that tweet came out, it just was okay. Let's just this is this is our time to go. I do we have to give some credit for two Roseanne for giving up her financial. Gay from an stake in the show to be able to have the character. Either the actors and everyone behind the scene continue their job that was very giving of her. Absolutely. Because if you got no reason, everybody should know the ins and outs of TV Roseanne owned, you know, owned part if not all of the rights to the key. Well, it's her. Yeah. To the rights to that character. So in order to move forward ABC demanded that Roseanne have no interest whatsoever. And I guess it's very apparent her. Name is nowhere in the credits. And you will notice if eagle-eyed viewers pay close attention to the pictures in the Connor living room. There are no pictures of Roseanne anywhere like her. They they don't even have the rights, nor do I think they wanted to use her likeness in any way, which I find fascinating. More of her side after that interview too. Watching it tonight. And that's why I'm curious to see how they do this. And where they're going to go with it. I'm sure it's gonna be really funny, but it is heartbreaking on so many levels. Yeah. What what do you feel? We don't have a lot of time. But but I didn't get to listen to this. Yeah. What is there something specifically that turned your dial a little bit to see her side a little bit more? Absolutely. Yeah. I mean, she felt she's feels very misunderstood that. You know, she she didn't mean her tweet in that way. And also that this swiftness. I mean, I remember when this happened. We were all like, yeah. Okay. That's what you get. But at the same time, I two of her tweets it was this tweet. And there was another tweet like many years ago that was kind of brought to light in the controversy of the the, you know, the current the recent tweet they got fired, but you just who the swiftness of that. And that they're just moving forward. There is some. Kind of sadness there when she was talking about it that she wishes the show. Success, but you could tell she doesn't want to be a part of it. And it's just. I I'm confused though, you you you said you started to see her side. Yeah. Just sadness that she was. She was a part of it. And that the the feel so misunderstood that. That's not met by her tweet. And Joe Rogan, you know, he's also he's he agrees with her that she's a comedian. And that you know that this is a slippery slope of one tweet or two over how long she's been on Twitter can end thing so swiftly. They had other examples of people who've said far worse things that were given. And also they were backed by their station like they used Smith A B as an example her tweet that controversy, but comedy central was behind her supporting her for it. She felt no support from ABC. Yeah. And so some good points there. I I need to listen to the interview
'Conners' cast says it's 'awkward' filming without Roseanne Barr
"So this show is called the Connors in case you haven't heard of this. It's supposed to debut later this month, and it's the remaining cast members they're reflecting on their new director. After bars. Fire was awkward, but not awkward Laurie Metcalf says and she's the one who plays Jackie she told people that filming without Roseanne. It was right, but not right wrong. But not wrong. What what what is that? What are those quotes? I'm so confused. What do you mean? Anyway, the series is expected to address bars character she's killed off and the family is left to recover. And you know, I like, John Goodman. So I can't I don't really wanna root against it simply because of him I actually do like him. And I love his character on the show. I like his career. I like the the curve the trajectory again of his career other stuff that he has done. So I I just think it's I just think it's really it's really sad. What's going on to this? But I I don't know. I think deep down the cast is really sad that she's not going to be a part of it. But they obviously can't come right out and say that in public for whatever reason, but we'll see how this plays out again. It's the Connors Roseanne without Roseanne. I guess that's supposed

"In the phoenix area for now starting in january you can order wine as well and twitter's most tweeted person of 2017 not the president it was carter wilkinson he begged people to reach tweet him so he could get free chicken nuggets from wendy's now he didn't get the eighteen million tweets needed but wendy's gave him the food anyway pariah thank it tom it's 25 past entertainment time helo chuck rich good morning evan is certainly don't have to be female to appreciate and enjoy the movie lady bird but this may sound a little awkward i think it does help a lot to be female to right indirect a movie like lady bird that sound okay well ladybird written and directed by the actress greta girl wig whose only behind the camera here is about the relationship between a mother laurie metcalf and a daughter sirchia ronen both of these actress is turning great performances they're the kind of actresses where you kinda wanna put him in the category of give that person an oscar already well sir should ronen and laurie metcalf are in a car as ladybird begins right from the start you see the tension between mother and daughter the love between mother and daughter and the quick changes between both moods search for remnants character wants to be called lady bird insists on it and one of the reasons i think it's because their mother doesn't like it she is uncomfortable in sacramento which looks beautiful to the viewer the movie she wants to go east for college her mother is giving are a lot of resistance for understandable reasons it's a great movie about parents and kids a great movie about teenagers is quite funny at times moving and i would say sir sharoni and for best actress laurie metcalf for best supporting actress to good nominations i think and the movie ladybird gets an aminus hardly story thank you chuck rich let's first light it's 27 past the hour.
