"Let's start here. Where does the trade deadline? Look for? These two teams come Friday. Both teams will be active, Kevin, I think on the Brewers side and we've seen it time and time again, David turns heads up their baseball operations. He's like the guy who goes to the auction and everybody else is big in on bidding on big items, and he waits for all those to go past. And then he'll eventually pluck out one or two things with great value, and they'll turn out great on the on the White Sox side think they're looking for bullpen help, But the number one concern is its second base, and I've heard a lot. Conversation about them. And Adam Frazier, the Pittsburgh Pirates, You know, it's pretty clear that their front office is absolutely devoted this year. Adam Frazier would be a perfect edition right now, and you would understand why the Pirates would deal him. It's going to be a while before the relevant again and add appraisers value is never going to be higher than it is right now. With the guys. They're getting back off the interlace. The addition of Fraser, that would be a hell of a lineup. Yes, sometimes it's not the major moves that get made on the at the trade deadline. It's the little pieces. That just fit perfectly into one organization and into a lineup that can kind of catapult a team to a deep run in October. What are some of the big moves are the big names that we could be thinking about. Come Friday, Buster. Yeah. I mean, the Cubs are the buffet table for all the contenders. You know, we're all going to be talking about Craig Kimbrel. Is he going to land with the Houston Astros? You're going to land with the Red Sox is going to land with the San Francisco Giants. Her team. I heard a lot about today and touch in terms of great Kimbrel, And that would be the Los Angeles Dodgers. You know, having Craig Kimbrel, I think would allow the Dodgers to move past that uncomfortable political question with Kenley Jansen because there would be no insult. If you're to go to Kenley, Look, you're going to share save chances with a guy who's a Hall of Fame candidate As as they move forward, Chris Ryan is going to be in the conversations. The mats are certainly one of the teams that have been talked about Javier Baez. I think he's going to get moved. I think Anthony Rizzo is going to get moved. He's an absolutely perfect fit for the Boston Red Sox. And I think they're going to be a ton of bullpen moves between made between now and Friday. Actually had a couple of executives say to me today that while it's been relatively quiet to this point They believe there's going to be a huge flurry of activity..

Los Angeles Pilots Program to Try 'Colorblind' Foster Care Decisions
"Los angeles department of child and family services is launching a pilot program called blind removal. Now this is the government agency that deals with child welfare issues. Dcfs is the government agency that also makes decisions about whether or not a child should be removed from home Based on the safety of that household. Now i i wanna tell you more about this blind removal pilot program because what it has to do with is the overrepresentation of children of color within the foster care system meaning the children who are typically removed from these households happen to have parents who are black or latino and it looks as though there might be issues with some implicit bias in the decisions that are made so blind. Removal is Meant to take the race component out of it as social workers are deliberating in regard to whether or not they remove a child from a home. So i wanna tell you how the numbers look right now so you can understand why this is a problem. So for instance. Seven percent of children in los angeles county are black while twenty four percent of those removed from their homes from last april to this march were black according to the la county department of children and family services. Twenty percent of children in the county are white with twelve percent of those removed. So as you can see there's an overrepresentation of black children. Being taken out of their household moved out of their households now. Three quarters of children removed from their homes in la. Two thousand twenty. Where either black. Or latino
The Bottle vs. Tap Battle: Which Tastes Better?
"Are in the ring with tap and bottled and it's time for the first round. Let's start with a question of taste. My name is martin reason. I live in los angeles. And i am a water somali. So many years at gentleman who works in a restaurant and recommends to from wine pairings. I'm doing the same with water. Amazingly this is not satire. This is real mini documentary all about martin the war to somali. Sometimes i'm so proud to be angelino my passion for water against child but a drinker professionally since two thousand this whole water semi business has got to be totally well to keep it clean. I'm going to call it bull honky a water sommelier. This is penn and teller's point exactly that it's hor spooky that said their guests. Were totally fooled by the fancy menu. Even though they were drinking identical glasses of water what do you think about the amazon pressure. Okay now i can take on. this is definitely tasted. It's it's almost too easy to make fun of this. Whole business of different waters tasting different. But also penn and teller isn't necessarily the most trusted source for food news so we figured we should be open minded and scientific and test this whole thing out ourselves. We bought a bunch of different types of bottled waters and we through our own top water into the tasting mix. and then we each deputized partners. Tim and jeff to create a blind taste test for us. Tim down fourteen little glasses. Got a hold of some tap water and then he opened and poured each bottle and one cam here in los angeles. Jeff did the same following the instructions. On tim's spreadsheet we'd picked an american spring water the couple of european mineral waters some bottled process tap water specifically aquafina and then to mix things up. We added one of those bogus alkaline waters and some artesian water. All the way from the south pacific we have an array of glasses and each row of glasses represents different types of bottled water. There is some tap water in there to throw you off and we are hoping to see that you might or might not be able to tell the difference. I have to say. I embarked on this with a lot of confidence in my discriminatory abilities. At least when it comes to beverages nothing None of my previous wine tasting experience is helping me here but let me take a sip.

"Beneath `as is the knight of swords. Now this is what's gotten us into all this trouble. The Knight of swords words is going into battle. The Knight of swords is rushing in on a war horse full throttle. It's created the stress that is causing us A lot of our problems page of swords is the present as his passing and the page of swords is sort of a an unseen in an unsteady state a little bit paranoid clutching his sword of or her sort. Actually the pages are often from female. What we're all feeling right now is I mean everybody is on edge? It's not a comfortable place to be a and we're coming out of it. The near present as combine is the page of COPS. which again how's us? The cubs are the the suit of emotion and the page has little fish coming out of the coming out of the cup. There's little gift in there. I see evolution. Maybe the vision thing. Hello Yeah offering coming another offering. Aubrey offer so yeah. There's there's a The pictures of a mind taking four form so then this is this is us and what we have is the eight of wands. I always think of these as a messenger. The wants or the first suit their their sticks but they're coming into leaf so they're about beginnings there about I would say definitely about hope but a message is okay. Maybe you're or not a woo. Woo Person but political prognostication according to the usual methods. How reliable is that? Our posters nate silver Reuters the day before the twenty sixteen election. It was ninety percent certain that Hillary Clinton would win still to be fair and balanced. I went the next day to an actual professional political consultant. A myth the car. He has consulted with some bold faced names and I mean boldfaced. I mean maybe currently running in the Democratic primary no names because of the. MDA's never mind because of his nonprofit work always the loophole. I was able to get an interview with him on the record. I think the easiest one that other which I feel is the most accurate is longtime political consultant and founder and CEO of lawmaker dot Io. And the only reason I say lawmaker dot. Io is because a lot of people go to lawmaker dot com we say lawmaker dot io even though that's very ninety s and we call it a micro lobbying platform and the goal is to help people you know be Empower them to advocate on their behalf. It doesn't make them legal lobbyists but we want everyone to be able to to to be political advocates can. Is there any way you can start like. What's the frame? What will myself going to be rolling from? What's GonNa be happening before we know that as you said it's kind of a roundtable or I'm not gonNa tell me Oh I'm not gonNa tell you okay? Yeah it's okay so this I'll just it's a bit of a it's it's a it's an experimental kind of fun segment so I'm GonNa just jump in with a very open ended question the country the United States. What do you think is the central reason you were here where we are now speak open end? Yeah that's the that's the ball quite. Let me try it again. What do you think is? Let's say the underlying problem. I'm kind of hoping he'll say the devil but he doesn't quite not at first. It's going to sound very general. It's a lack of civic literacy and Civic Responsibility d from the ground up but I think what we've seen in America being country that we've so proudly said with the best country in the world is strongest prosperous innovative. That's allowed so many of us to say. Oh Oh and thus I don't have to pay attention the moment the people stop paying attention. That's where you have lobbyists and interest groups and foreign governments saying. Oh well we're GONNA pay attention you know. And lobbyists is an interest groups. They get hurt every single day. And that's a big imbalance that causes a lot of where we are as a country today. And what are people distracted by their habits and their habits are what can I do for immediate gratification because civic participation is not about immediate gratification. You do get immediate gratification from Netflix devil materialism listen. I'll take it so. Have you seen in your work. A shift from one mood to another mood. One era to another era when when feeling to another feeling there has been a shift And I feel like almost anyone on the street you can ask what that shift is. And they're going to be hovering around what it is. which which is the sense of emergency on Edge? Page of swords specially in the twenty twenty election. We're GONNA see more and more youth participation they say in twenty twenty ten percent of eligible voters. Odors are GONNA be genesee because of the issues because even movements that we've seen whether it was the march for our lives the global climate strike black lives matter. More youth are going to be participating picture of a mind taking and one thing that we've seen time and time again is that people that engage in politics or engage in civic life. They have more hope for the future under evolution. So this is not about now this is not about is going to be. Elizabeth is GonNa be America all Blah. This is about the action. Step is is to be part of the evolution without becoming fixated and without becoming so. That's our show. "So often living in Los Angeles Fresno sounds good. Finally in this episode. We'll keep so many of us up at night. The elephant in the room politics talk about blue Monday. Since the two thousand sixteen election in California literally a blue state Allah Joni Mitchell's blue. There's been a move to spirituality to older earth magic's Hattricks two things wiccan. I happened to be at a New Year's gathering hosted by Janet Fitch Author of White Oleander an Oprah Book Club. Pick Janet the tradition of Reading Tarot cards at the first of the year. In this case she did a reading for the entire USA. For Twenty twenty okay. So let's all think about what's in store for the expertly. Janet shuttles and cuts picard turns over the devil. Really aww her spiraling copying the Davos. The country is chained to its material real way of existing. It's it's it's addicted to its material reality and this is the problem the central problem. Okay crossing us as temperance. The card of the Cross is usually a a stumbling block. But in this case I think it's like a somewhat of a barrier to this addiction. Not A it's not a reverse course it is a blending of the left and the right is pouring or she is pouring water from one cup to another. Greenwich yes cards of La and suddenly. Everybody's this kid has six different learning disabilities in this trump era. It was these Democrats and these Hollywood celebrities for for all the good progressive causes that they were the ones self petard hoisted. I have always said that college admissions is the rubber hitting the road for Rep progressive. And we talked about long time with my mother on fire as well. I love that well. We were parents and Van Nuys as a studio musician. What's the quickest way to get to the valley? Mary musician writer that we completely were caught unawares and I would have sent my kids to private school. Well if I could. I just couldn't afford it and couldn't get them in but when talking to other liberal progressive parents at all the La Times book events and all of the parties as with the discharge nate Cetera et Cetera. Language was it was never a private school. It was always an independent school to sounds like right on target and the reason that we are sending our child to John Dewey Mulholland willows. Say on the mountain is because we wanted independent thinking and diversity versity. Yeah but the local schools are seventy five percent Latino. They're not diverse enough because there are two Latino there to Mexican and Guatemalan but the limousine liberals or whether it would be that Acura. I don't even know what the fancy car the Tesla hybrid imports. delectable carcass are better than you upset that liberal but they never called it it was which is a little bit of a cfo be it was always in service of their child all that was gifted and they just didn't want their kids to be among English learners because they had learned somewhere appear related the their child's English learning developed both parents have PhD's in English and learn plenty of good English. Just look at a publication like so many of the top liberal publications out of New York that really really really espoused liberal politics boy. Their editors all their kids go to expensive private schools New York Times. Yes yes David. remix kids go to the local public school. Hey James Bennett. At at the time I didn't go to the local public school walk. And you talk about diversity. It's a curated diversity wind. Oh we want African Americans. We won African American kids. That are from the hood but we want them vetted very thoroughly. We want that admissions person to have shaken them upside down and sideways. We may even even want a third party. There's these nonprofits like a better chance that helps identify. We WanNA make sure that they're not that kind of African American kid. Yeah we want you know the right kind. And then of course the kid who's just there to get his education is also there to provide it'd diversity experience for the rich white kids so they can say our child doesn't see color right and then about the La realities. When I was sending my kids to elementary school we were looking at a house over here and I said well? What is the elementary school? She said. Oh it's vantage it. Never send them. Don't even think about why right he's all Hispanic and she said but if you buy on the other side of the street that's the district for Third Street school. Oh but you'd Never WanNa go there. Why all Asian? They're super competitive. So the Hispanics perceived to be not strong enough for your genius the Asians not. They got their hustle on your kids. Missile ever survive. You need some curated diversity up just the reality of liberal liberal liberal to go back to felicity huffman felicity. Here's what's going on. I don't know how much you followed her mothering website. What the flicker which close goes down immediately after she was arrested? I didn't okay so her thing. On what the flow. The tone of it is we all love. Our Kids Ed's motherhood has gotten crazy. Take some shortcuts. That's the whole essence of what the flick like you know. What if those other mothers WANNA show up? And unlike Carpool to the thing and bring all desserts. For God's sakes let them do it. And if you're supposed to like handknitted Cape for the play and you've got an extricate for God's sakes she just took the what the flicker approach one step too far like if you're doesn't do well on the sat just have have someone take it doesn't get someone to take. She just did not realize immersed she was or or in a way in a way it was the highest testament to what the flip thinking. You know now that she's out of jail she should be like what the flick into the maximum whereas yes I had to go to the slammer but it was just just like a camp and me and Martha Stewart and the Don suits like you win some you lose a lot of people are like. Oh she's the least involved of any evident. It did seem on the one hand I talked to an FBI guy about what these rates are like. All of them are basically you kick open the door if they don't open it. You flood the house because there could be someone in backer destroying documents. Everyone's like sleeping in their getting a SWAT team. So it's like is that too much and I see where they could be coming from. Where when the whole system is so corrupt what made her plan more corrupt? And there's a lot of talk now in La that apparently this always always gets exaggerated among parents top. Private schools didn't do very well with early action and early decision this year at the Ivy League colleges and there's been some talk that the Ivy League colleges want to teach a lesson to these. La Rich people. Not that. I think it's going to affect everything in the ultimate decisions at the end but are kind of saying we are not just going to close on your bullshit anymore. We're GONNA keep an eye on you all the way through before we give any admissions. I just think it got the attention of the admissions missions. Offices of what coaches were doing and it just showed how easily the system was manipulated.

We have completely different body responses to it. I my response shutdown. He wants to lay on the couch with his arms over his chest. Sir I have. I'm like it's four in the morning goal doping yet. I need to go for a run. I have so energy. I've already been running canyon I've already walked enlargement. I'm going to go on a huge web later. I get enormous energy from fasting. Wow so my ancestors as I say to Michael. We're the ones that got up and got the rabbits. Yeah in the morning opera. His ancestors just thought. I guess it's time for I live to be done. Can't stash the food settle into the living room and Julia launches into her holiday. Post mortem it was like Barkan Dalia. It was like there were nights right eating so much that I get up in vomit because of just like what is it Rome in the the last days of Rome like I have eaten so much we can we just because there was great food around the house it was like yeah and also I'm traveling and I can eat what I wander winebrenner flying me first class per flying in the bottle so did this started with it because I thought I feel really uncomfortable in my body but I don't want to go on a diet I made all down soon. I'M NOT GONNA be on a diet and then I thought based on all the signs I know and everything I've read and that we've done together. What if I just had a protocol like a religion because there's also comes from being my friends and my Muslim family in Chicago? I don't know if that I opted out so I did Ramadan with them and everything I really like. It's a religion some religious fast. What if my personal philosophy of life slash religion is two times a year? I do a five to seven. They fast otherwise. I eat whatever I wanted any time except for one day we have a one day a week fast in between so it and then otherwise. Don't think about it. And then whatever weight I land on. That's my life like it's really and it's also because my blood sugar's really high so I don't want to be diabetic so I'm trying to avoid that too but without restricting myself and being able to drink as much as I want and have dessert and also little John's toffee. Yeah yeah I know like. It's very contradictory. I'm saying all the things I vowed I'd never say to anyone. And that's because of the magic of Hugh You have that effect act on sleep on. I think walking up cheeses and I am aborted meal that we're not gonNA sorry hilarious. It's even better because we're just so energized food. That is the in another room so when you think of like what your last meal would be. Oh yes which I often think. Okay so what is is your. What's your last meal your death row use murdered? Hopefully not your husband. No you had to be unfair. It has to be wrong okay. Why why you've while you're dying okay? Okay has to be an unfair death. Okay how so and the reason I say that is if you really did kill the people. I think you should be thinking how this is Justin right that you should die. Maybe you shouldn't have anything before. Are you talking my west meal is it's completely wrong but I can't control anything. I'm about to die okay. So you've been accused of something something that's wrong but I can't can't change it. Yeah and somebody's willing to give me anything. Okay probably would have a really fatty steak. Done rare grilled a rare. I would have my family recipe of potatoes romanoff which is potatoes with cream cheese and sour cream and tons of cheddar cheese and onions. And it's very good. I would have Brussels sprouts and Bacon. I would have actually like vegetables. I would have some grilled vegetables really. Yeah I don't I wouldn't wanNA feel feel sick going into the chamber. You don't want to vomit on yourself as you're getting the injection. So adding SUISA adding Brussel sprouts with Bacon. No but that's so good to me. I could have that completely. But and then I'd have bread pudding with caramel sauce and and whip cream that does sound any and a lot of red wine and a lot of red wine. Yeah I mean I would eat all those things anyway in Mike Strange Kito not quite bread diet but always buy gas. Then I'm constantly buying everybody else on my household because I famously don't eat bread. I feel that if I'm standing in the kitchen and tear it off with just like it and then just the white part and just eat the cross slathered in butter 'cause because the butter that just like out so all my God so I probably would go like a straight pasta situation because the state that you'd discuss until he was being good yet because it's a total atkins like they say. Eat Steak but I do. Just love steak. I love steak in red wine in fact in January when I don't drink plus the other thing my January. Don't drink which I've done. It used to be land. Now it's January I won't even have steak because to me if you can't have red wine with steak shouldn't even have steak. What's the point rather certain foods that if you don't have eight if you can't have a Margarita with chips and Guacamole? I don't see why you have any chips and Guacamole you. How bipolar am in this morning at Runyon Canyon and just now? I'm listening to the PODCAST. Food psychology with Lisa Harrison. which is the anti diet food? podcast asked that completely turned me on to health at every size. This is all bullshit. The whole Wait cycling industry. I love that term. Like weight watches all that. They're just they know that you're going to gain it back and they're going to have you back like the whole and the way hold the sciences such crap and that the whole idea that people who are heavier are necessarily less healthy than other people has a lot of problems with it. So I'm listening to that while I'm going around on my fast. Until how long have you been doing this over January. Well I just moved it to January. I did it for lent my whole life. I used to huma chocolate for lent before I could drink and then every year that it was lent even when I stop believing in God and was definitely not a Catholic on fat Tuesday. I I would have a lot to drink and then Ash Wednesday which if I did go to mass. It was on Ash Wednesday because I felt like that was the only day the character told the truth from ashes. You came to to ashes. You shall return. They put the APP on your forehead And that's Ash. Wednesday starts length. So it's about forty days and then I gave a chocolate the and Y.. An alcohol and then my friend Bob Bloomer who does sober January's got me into the sober January and it's less it's only thirty days. Not Forty days. What I like about it is that it proves that? I don't have a problem.

Alfred of the New York Times James The New Yorker Vanity Fair is latest book and then we test. Hello Henry Alford. Hello Sandra how are you. I'm fine thank you so I'm speaking with my friend. Henry Elfriede I of course in Los Angeles in Pasadena in my living room truth be told. And where are you sitting right now Henry Henry Alfred. I'm sitting in the living room of my terribly. QUAINT Greenwich Village apartment. It is Super Queens. Okay so even though this podcast was called sleepless in Los Angeles and there you are awake in Manhattan. There's a connection I mean Los Angeles is a state of being while Manhattan is what is it. Well your maybe a state of anxiety as much as much as a state of being New York is the big apple while as my musician. Nations ex-husband used to say Los Angeles is receding carrot. So sad but true. I should note that we're talking on on January first New Year's Day like well behaved people it is eleven. Am My time two PM Yours. You got a little more wiggle room on that one. Now ask any Alfred Alfred. How was your New Year's Eve? It was super anti-climactic because we had actually been out past midnight the the two evenings prior yeah go figure I mean for a person over fifty. That's like the the a marathon of festivity so we just we played real low key last night so we you know I've heard the people of our age of the go-to Madonna Concert. And because Madonna doesn't go onto like twelve thirty in the morning lawsuits are happening actual losses. Have you heard uh I heard that the woman in Florida who sued and then I also heard that madge is doing on audience interaction and and is apparently not terribly polite or or smooth with any sort of hurting people's feelings in the audience did did you say mad madge. Yes is what my my people call her. As I'd like to say not only are we born two days. Apart you are February thirteenth. I eh eleven nine hundred sixty two. I don't mind saying Aquarians. Both will always be your elder. No matter what just as a Madonna madge will always be four years older than me though. I will always be seventy five pounds heavier so the topic at hand. This fine January first is his new year's resolutions January being as I like to the month of enlightened self loathing If you go into the history of it you could say the Babylonians did the Romans did it. The Christians did but further now supposedly you don't during the Great Depression. A quarter of American adults for New Year's resolutions whereas come to the turn of the century about half of all American adults formed and half will fail. So it's kind of a very first world problem. If you Wilson like we're peasants saying we hope on January first. The Tar will give us more money. We got to berate ourselves from having ingested too many things in first world way I think so how about you. Where do you stand on this issue of New Year's resolutions? Where do you stand on it? Personal one of my resolutions for this here is super first world. And that is that I would like to be calmer in the face of technological mishap uh-huh which is to say. I know that those those Nablus the automatic sinks in public bathrooms. I know that the the the those are supposed to make my life easier so I'm just going to relax into that noble intention rather than can focus on the highly irritating actuality which is that they they seem to single me out and I cannot activate the sings so you mean there. You'RE GONNA fluttering karate chops at Nocera to motion and you. You just can't do it precisely now I it could be. I could be doing some kind of like Origami Situation with the hand the fluttering and the and nothing so then you you sort of run over to the edge of the bathroom and you look to see if their paper towels and there aren't and then you run back it. Just it's a weird little dance chance. Well I think just you don't maybe if I'm just armchair quarterbacking here from the other end of the country I think the Origami fluttering thing thing. That's what I mean. I think maybe a standard calmly willing it to happen. You know instead of doing the stabbing thing. The I'm just picturing Hugh Henry through your Ram Right. The Graham and I think it's too much I think you just stand there calmly year. BRING ME THE WALK TO A. Ah Yeah you think the sink can smell fear especially in Chile your affair and you may have a point. Yeah maybe just like a Jab. Bob Knocking an uppercut to the to the sink nozzle okay. I'm going to turn now Henry. No that's totally wrong. I think you should just stand very still relaxed. The buttocks and like Charlton Heston as Moses. Just will surely. The titans factor is not aiding the process.
