"N B A absolutely should change the logo. Change it to Kobe Bryant. Celebrate. The men who have built this league. Men who are the reasons why Fans are in the stands when they can come back and thank goodness that day is going to come. In the N B. A, is a rare cultural institution. Where black men are the stars. Black men are elevated. And is that rare cultural institution. It has a responsibility to pay homage to that, and it has a responsibility to honor that. And I think this is a gesture. That would clearly mean a lot to carry Irving. I don't think he's alone. We know that Kyrie speaks for a lot of players. He's another guy was very influential to a lot of players. So overall, I think this would be a good thing for the league. I don't see where the opposition would come from. Going off of what the players did last year to with Balancing being professional basketball players and the movements for social justice and racial justice that they took. Pardon. That's heavy stuff. I mean, we are only a few months removed from LeBron James playing his tail off on the court. In pursuit of his fourth championship. Then talking about Briana Taylor. Wearing all of that on there on his sleeve. I mean, we were not far removed from that at all. I mean, asking these guys to go in the bubble. I don't know that so many people have had it so bad and Ultimately, NBA players. Yeah, I get it low on the concern list Totally totally understand that. But from the Job description of what's usually asked professional athlete. What was asked what's been asked, ain't it? And that's fine and they're getting paid well, and that's good. But The point is This would be a really good gesture. On behalf of the league, and it would mean something. Securities for your thoughts on that at 855 to 1 to four CBS That's 855 to 124227. Kansas paid nearly $600M in fraudulent unemployment claims

"Older. Legislative audit says Kansas may have paid $600 million worth of bogus claims for unemployment benefits last year. The report released Wednesday by the GOP controlled legislators, nonpartisan auditing division gave a figure that's more than double the state Department of Labor's estimate. The report suggested that nearly one in four unemployment claims paid last year could have been fraudulent summit a surgeon filings during the Kobe 19 pandemic. The department on Tuesday estimated last year's fraudulent claims as worth $290 million. Department strongly disputed the audits figure and said So in a written response, but Republican lawmakers saw the audit as likely to be more accurate. Dave Wilson K

"Veteran free agents you signed in plugged in. You have worked Well, this is Quinn Snyder's seventh year. I believe with the team, so a system is firmly in place. That's what I like. You're not going all in for Anthony Davis. Not all in for James Harden. Not all in for Drew holidays. You consign Yonts, the Supermax. Yeah, we we We've talked so much about in recent months. How the N B A is now this all in league and I think it is, but I do like to see the jazz leading the West right now. And the Sixers winning the East. The six years a team that has not gone all in. Why're they number one in the East right now? Because Joe Allen Bead is healthy and playing like an M V. P he's joining with Ben Simmons. The offseason editions that there are more he made have worked out shooter's spacing the floor. It's running better. Doc Rivers was a good change to make and head coach so the Sixers Built off their nucleus led by indeed in Simmons. That's what I like to see. And yes, the Nets are right behind him. The Bucks are right behind them. So And I do think. Ultimately, the Nets are going to represent the Eastern Conference in the finals with the way that Kyrie and James Harden her jelling, And I mean Durant is the guy who I'm not worried about on that team. I mean, he was able to gel seamlessly and golden State. I think he'll be able to gel seamlessly once he returns with Kyrie and Harden. S O. If James Harden keeps playing like this and keeps messing with Kyrie than I do think the Nets are making at the East and we'll talk all spring about how it's an all in league and that's you need to do but for right now. For right now. Damn it. I am pleased to see the Sixers atop the East and the Jazz atop the West. It's something different and something fresh. I do like it. Speaking of Kyrie And speaking of the Nets. I do want to talk about Some comments that carry Irving made this week. About changing the logo. There's been this undercurrent in the league toe change the logo. The silhouette of Jerry West change it, too. Kobe Bryant and on Wednesday Tyree put up a post on instagram. Of a modified NBA logo with Kobe. Swapped and as the figure in the middle with this caption Gotta happen. I don't care what anyone says. In all caps Black kings built of the week. Strong words there from Irving. I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment. By the way, I'll get to that in a second. That's what he posted on Wednesday. Here's what he said last night about his opinion on changing the NBA logo to Kobe. As a native black man as a native black king, You know, I think it's part of my responsibility to continue to push our generation our culture forward. Um, I know that it probably was met with some people that love it. I love the idea of some people that don't like it. But my thing is paying homage to The example. That has been set by that man. Yeah. I think that's very well, said And keep in mind. Jerry West himself. Has said he's uncomfortable with being On the logo. Jerry West himself. This is what he said. Back in 2017 about the matter if I think if I were the MBA Would be embarrassed about it, West said. I don't like to do anything to call attention to myself. If they would want to change it. I wish they would. In many ways, I wish they would That's Jerry West himself. So don't fight harder. For Jerry West to be on the NBA logo. Then Jerry West is willing to fight for Jerry West to be on the NBA logo if you catch my drift I understand that Reflexively. There is a Instinct to want to push back. Get some of this stuff, and I get that some of these gestures. Changing logo's Changing mascots. It can come across is disingenuous and ultimately superficial. And meaningless. Totally get that and agree with that. But changing the NBA logo. Is not one of those times. First of all, it's ubiquitous. It's on every court. Every poster. Every ad. It's everywhere. And when you think of the MBA Yes. There have been a lot of great white players in the league. No doubt. And I don't mean to break it down into this, I guess pun intended black and white context. But let's be honest. The N B. A is a league That's largely been built by black men. It's a league that is elevated. Black men. It's a league where the biggest stars have been black men. And black men. Have not been celebrated like they should throughout this nation's history. So I am totally in favor. Of the NBA logo being changed to a black man. I am totally in favor of that person being Kobe Bryant. I'm totally on board with this idea. Coby represents the modern MBA. That helicopter crashed last January. You saw the outpouring of support across the league led by LeBron James, of course, and LeBron spoke often in quite eloquently. About the need toe carry on Kobe's legacy. Tributes poured in. Kobe was a beloved figure across the league in the modern NBA clearly such an influential figure for so many guys No, it's just the logo. Yeah, it is. But it isn't As I said, it's everywhere. These guys see it and Jerry West himself, that said. He's uncomfortable with the idea..

Overcoming AI Deployment Challenges In The Enterprise With Mahmoud Arram Of Bluecore

"So mood. I wanna deal to dive in with here on this theme of our thursday interviews around making business case for a means. Different things to different people you know. All i know is when an executive is deciding to adopt a or not ex- deployment they're looking at a certain number of component parts to make that decision. What are those key parts for you. Thank you for having me. Yeah from from my perspective so our customers are brands and retailers. And i have found that is a bit of buzzword. Everyone right now. Has the i in their name including a company where i bought my standing desk from so it has lost. Its meaning i think when it came when it comes to business cases so the way i have been thinking about it is in terms of accelerating ghouls that the companies already have in the case of brands and retailers. What has been happening Especially in the pre covid world. Is that the cost of acquiring customers has been going considerably up. There's a lot of venture capital money. That's going into direct to consumer brands. Everyone is buying ads in order to acquire new customers. but then no-one has been thinking about retaining customers. Retaining customers is much more efficient and in order to retain customers and one of the elements you have to do. There is to communicate with them at the level that the like and the able to personalize content at least in the context of retail. Now a i can make that possible. And essentially what we replace existing workflows and outdated technology that makes retaining customers cost effective and makes a from a workflow perspective very expensive and all of that easy and we just happened to us to make that possible. Yes you're saying accentuating in existing already kind of present goal that said i guess. Different kinds of deployments they involve different factors here. So i'm thinking about what it looks like to apply to detect fraud or to build a chat bot where we've gotta get a pretty strong corpus of our own data together we've gotta clean and harmonize that stuff. We've gotta get cross functional teams to come together. Maybe make sense of that. Some applications like a security camera that detects people. Well it's pretrained. I don't need any interaction. You're buying it software. It's off the shelf end of story. But i would imagine for a deployment often. We do have those realistic considerations so we don't have to sell with the whizbang like a nimrod that like. Ai is cool for its own sake. I think safely squarely. That's for nimrods only in this. Podcast hopefully has very few of them tuning in certainly if they've been berated long enough with the messages that we've been sending to them in best practices but those considerations still feel real and feel like they're things that leadership is going to have to address. How is that presented on the table when people are saying. Hey or nay whether it's to your solution or something else. Yeah what we've seen is that there's a lot of digital transformation project out there especially in retail which is vertical that we focus on a minimum buzzword in there. Lots of consultancies. That are working on this. What we've noticed is that there are lots of these projects that have been going sideways. A lot of money has been spent on those and essentially a lot of the challenges that they've run into are around essentially what you were just saying. What is the collection. How do i collect even my own data at silos. It's in different parts. It's different databases you. You think about retail. It has a very complex data. Set that moves. The difference steve's In very different levels of structure can have real time interactions on your website. And then you have inventory movement in physical stores so usually you're getting that data all in one place in order to even run analysis like let alone execution on top of becomes a hard problem right and there are many cases in which is solves that solves the collection of data. I would say in on this case it would be machine learning and even the precursor of it which is how do i actually wrangle all of this data. Put it into one place. So that i can actually run workflows on it. It's so i would say usually that usually that is the consideration is how to solve the problem. Before you even embark on the part. That feels like. I mean if you're you know you're selling whether you're a service or a product you're selling into an enterprise. They're going to have to overcome that right. It's not you're not just going to be like well you can figure the api's and up. I'll show users how to use an internet. See you later guys. It's not really like that. We're going to have to dive into these silos to some degree. How do you present that without scaring people away. Hey look this is going to involve some integration here evolve harmonizing some stuff. This is gonna involve work in new ways and think it through new problems like you said we're identifying with a goal that we know is important to the client. I think that's tremendously sharp smart. You know more pressing than ever in this kobe era. But but how do we present the realities of what the planet look like without making it spooky. So let's easier said than done. The reality is in a lot of these digital transformation projects that included a component. The integration part is usually what fails everyone says. Oh yeah. I have the is. Of course you can put this system that system. And you can integrate oracle with adobe and the reality. Is you know companies lack either. The technical background to do this or usually everyone has such a snowflake off an implementation. There's so many new. You look at a marketing automation. There are five thousand different than theirs on the keep sheet so everyone has a very different permutation of systems on their staff and integrating all of those together. Especially if you are a new vendor on the stat is really really difficult so that is a very common failure which you have to overcome in order to be able to be successful. So there's success of being able to sell in their success at being able to actually deploy.

New Law Changes With Tom Black

"Hello and welcome to your retirement solution with tom. Black good morning tom. How're ya. I am doing great. It is a beautiful day with lots of opportunity absolutely happy new year by the way. This is our first recording. You and i in the in twenty twenty one. Yeah it's going to be Should be really interesting year. I we it has to be different. I don't know better but it has to be something has to change. I'm i'm really hoping for better and speaking of changes you're talking about that today a little bit. We're going to talk a little bit today about Proposed changes under the new administration and things that people ought to be thinking about nassir panicking about yet but just thinking about because of the lightning what we could see some changes dealing with the last couple of years all right and what kind of changes are we talking about specifically today. Well there's there's kind of a basset of multiple different ones. We've you may or may not have heard about the we're going to be seen some increases in taxes or some individuals and some of that depends on what happens with the so called trump tax break of twenty eighteen. One of the things have benefited everybody. That was included in there was a was the twelve percent tax bracket and that's been really beneficial to absolutely everybody who pays taxes and they're talking about on reversing those trump those tax bills. Which would mean that all of us. Potentially you know three percent more in taxes. Ghana still up on. These things are all in the air. But that's one of the first things we look at. We started talking about. How is this going to affect all of our clients in general or just individuals in general taxes. And that's the first thing that i was thinking about the other. Now that we know where georgia falls is that we could potentially be seeing other attached changes that can affect how you've been planning for your retirement or for the passing of your assets the next generation one of the ones that i am most interested in keeping an eye on for our clients is somewhat People either they've heard about it. They have no idea how this works. And it's called a step up in basis that you heard of this before i have but i don't quite understand all of it okay. So let's start with that with the basic idea. Let's say that Your parents bought calf dozen stocks in the sixties. And and they've held them ever since then. Well if your parents died in leave you those stocks you might be able you would be able to today. Turn around and sell those and pay no taxes on the gain you know. Maybe it's a million dollars with the gains okay. Yeah yeah yeah so i. If my parents were to sell them they'd have to pay yet. But if i if i inherit them then i don't that's correct. Well okay. that sounds good basis and you imagine people who are retired been retired for a while. who have some of these positions stock positions. If up well hail hold onto it. And if i die owning my kids will have to pay taxes on part of their narrates not a bad strategy. If you didn't need the money yeah problem now is all we're doing now is kicking the can down the road because if that does get refilled and that is really high on the list That can change. How you're going. You know how you plan on passing those assets so the kids. Oh yeah yeah. Yeah yeah and i was gonna say it seems to be almost a double edged sword there. Because if you're saying that they may change that and then if i in twenty years let's say i passed these stocks down to my kids and they have to pay taxes on them. We've we've already kind of seen the writing on the wall. That taxes are most likely going to be higher because we have to pay for all the debt that happened this last year with kobe. The relief and everything else in the trillions and trillions and trillions of dollars so that really changes the game not only does it bring those taxes back it. they'll probably higher. Don't you think absolutely. Oh boy i had this conversation with one of my clients In december and and in that situation they had About two million dollars in capital gains. And what was trying to get him. Understand was the taxes weren't going to get any cheaper and and we were better off to take the beating at which is approximately twenty four for them would have been about twenty four percent in taxes taxes any real by the stocks back but if pay taxes on it because it won't be cheaper in four years to pay the taxes mondo stocks if the gains continued to go. So it's it's a lot more complex than than just the the idea that you're right. It's going to get more experience so we know it is. It has to yeah not even last year. I mean we've been we've been spending money like drunken sailors for

Tiger Woods Faces An Uncertain Future

"Also brennan. It's currently a little bit before eight pm eastern on tuesday night and we need to say obviously that this story is still developing but as of now. What do we know about the car accident involving tiger woods. Well at this point based on the press conference held by the los angeles sheriff's department and various reporting tiger woods was driving at what was potentially too high speed around a area in los angeles county. That had a pretty severe bend in the road. The vehicle travel several hundred feet from the center. Divider at the intersection and rested on the west side of the road. In the brush is seven fifteen in the morning. Local time in la reissued ended up on. Its sire and there's a picture of the car holy cow and needed to be pried from. The viewpoint was removed by paramedics wielding axes to which is to use for prying and we also use an to pry him from the vehicle he was taken from the coat with see a caller backboard for Spinal precautions was responsive at the time of standard and resume wait. He was removed from the scene on a backboard rushed to nearby hospital and a trauma center. As of now no evidence of any impairment. There was no evidence of impairment so subsequent to that we're not gonna make any There was no effort to draw blood for example at the hospital so as of now it seems like a really bad accident. What do we know about. Tiger woods is health at the moment. Will he was brought to the hospital. Underwent surgery mark steinberg agents said there's multiple leg injuries. It has been said that there are potential fractures in his legs. But the big thing that was kind of noteworthy coming out of that press conference was. Everyone's saying he's lucky to get out of his life. He was wearing a seat belt. But it's bad and it could have been a whole lot worse when we first heard this news and didn't know really any details and just saw the photos of the car. I think a lot of us flashed back to just over a year ago with kobe. Bryant's helicopter accident also. La did you also have that immediate reaction i did. It was eerily similar. Do you remember where you were when you heard about kobe bryant. I think everyone will remember today. This was kind of one of those moments so it was only about fifty five sixty miles or so from where kobe's helicopter crash was so definitely. I had that kind of haunting feeling. I think a lot of people did. How has the gulf world reacted to this new. So far fellow players golf officials the best way i could describe. It is a lot of people holding their breath not only for his health. But for what happened. I mean i'm sick to my stomach hurts to see one ear seven now. My closest friends know getting an accident. And i just hope he's all right just is weird. I kids you know ensure the struggle. It's been a journey with tiger woods and a lot of people have kind of come to a level of cognitive dissonance of balancing the man and the myth and the realities of the scandals that he's been involved with and the amazing greatness and today seeing kind of the juxtaposition between this and his crash in two thousand nine tigers wife of five years zealand nordgren told police she heard the crash and used a golf club to break the rear window and pull him out of the locked vehicle. Young raveling of this public persona. That was very much kind of construct when it comes tiger woods. This perfect person was perfect.

Tiger Woods seriously injured in car accident in Los Angeles but 'awake, responsive and recovering' after right leg surgery

"It was it was incredible. Um, look, this is the biggest story that we've had all day. Most of us spent most of the morning on early afternoon watching news coverage of the Tiger Woods accident and the update that we're getting is about as good as it could be after an accident. Like he had where he was driving likely at a high rate of speed is not known, but likely for the action that we had. That's what happened. He's on a stretch of road here and outside of Los Angeles and Rancho Palos Verde is That you can get to 80 miles an hour Really fast that really quickly And you know, Mike, you drove that same stretch of road over the weekend. You can go down one of those curvy roads and suddenly you don't even think about it. You're going 80 miles an hour, hitting the median crossing the road hitting a sign the car flipped over. Cut a path through the shrubbery on the side of the road. And Tiger Woods. In many hours of surgery, has very serious injuries to his legs, Compound fracture and at least one of them. We talk to Steven Gregory, who broke the news of the Tiger Woods car accident earlier in the show today and said that look, it was pretty gruesome from the waist down from the legs for Tiger Woods compound fracture. The bone was sticking out of one of his legs. But other than that he didn't have Any life threatening injuries. So now it's about Tiger Woods, his legs and what's next for him, which is as good as you could be. When you see the accent? He had that we're not talking about life or death we're talking about now. Hey, can he play golf again? But certainly for a while it was How is he? Can he live? Is he not what's going on with this? And it was just one of those. Stories where you want, it bore information right away. It's like I don't care I wanted I wanted I wanted because you hear the story and you immediately assume the worst. And of course you're thinking about Kobe Bryant. What happened? And Oh, Kobe and Tiger and now and it was the first hour or so of this story or first out 90 minutes or so. It was just an insane amount of what What is it? We don't know. We know it was serious and he's in the hospital. And the first reports were moderately critical condition. He was in which I don't really know that that's a thing, but that's what we were told. And it was. It was just information flying by you when it was hard to even pay attention. It was just tell me something. Tell me something. Tell me something. Yeah, He really just Carter started to flow right and we had a three man text chain going back and forth very quickly, based on whatever new information Started to come out Steve Gregory K. F I Here in Los Angeles. I joined the show earlier tonight. You know the first to start delving into deeper and giving some details, And then the speculation begins and all the heartfelt Wishes of support and sympathy, and it really just kind of escalated quickly to where it's like. All right, Let's push that away because you don't wanna call it noise because it was a lot of positive energy coming to the To the situation and a lot of love right thinking about all the different aspects as golfer and and well pitchman, Tomo every being a household name. Too, you know, looking at, you know the family man and then the gulf side of things. So, like all these different angles start flowing through and you're trying to just push that all out of the way to go. Okay, what happened? As you said, I drove that stretch on Saturday and they have a couple of spots in it where you have the runaway truck lanes. You know where If you're having break issues, right, it's a different paved differently. So it helps toe slow things down a bit of different incline, etcetera. So those air on the road and you get into these curves and bends that You know, In this case, it's visibilities not not an issue. Aziz. We've talked about it with other subjects that have come up. Certainly what we would think about the horrific tragedy of the Kobe Bryant incident a year ago at visibility playing in and if there is a fog on the highways there in that stretch, Yank it gets pretty dense and with the quick bends that you have You know, could be even more problematic. Obviously, that didn't play here today, but it is one that you've really got to, you know, tenant to as much as we may have laughed at it and driver's Ed This is one of those stretches of road that tenant to use the real thing because you go from 50 and you start going down that highway and down ramp kind of situation. All of a sudden you're at 70 75. You're not hitting the accelerator. You're just going with with what The road grade is so I could see where it escalates. And so now it becomes the Let's dial it back and figure out how this came to pass and And feel fortunate that as we watch the photos and video of the wreckage that he got into a hospital to get the first part of

Hey on the east coast man. People have different time zones will wake up that. I think you have a better chance of saying before you go to bed. You can catch the dive five. Am true true to ask your mind your so. Look you games after you die to the boss valhalla again. And while you're going to get your your body back you can listen to us. How has that been market. I heard the travel. Times are really bad. I think israel is saying that. Yeah so. I'm pretty early in the game slide. Just be my first boss and like the knicks zone is pretty close. But i do feel like i can see in the future a time where i'm going to be like i don't want to have to wait. I see me just like build a new town or something again. you can be portals. You can build a little towns along the way but like damn the travel time is something that game for the second boss. I was playing with my friends. It took somewhere between an hour. Fifteen minutes an hour and a half minutes to get to just to get there and then it's like you get there and we kill the boss. And i was like and wanna walk back now. I think i'm good. Thanks gonna lock out. Never play again. So that's where i'm at fell head forever. Yes if i ever accomplishment. Let's give them have to walk back unless maybe my friends the portal or something building new homes. Yeah we did but then you have to. You have to get everything over there. Anyway doesn't matter it's pretty let's talk a bit about fantasy. I lost again. Fantasy sucks harm the winner. I want today. Fz kobe kobe just luck. He just doesn't realize how lucky is if you take you. Direct your eyes to the point against this is how well your opponents are doing against you which you don't control at all really nine hundred sixty. Two point lead band away. The most points against any in the league complaints against doesn't include the bands. You got nine hundred sixty two points against the base. I have thirteen hundred. Sixteen points against me is the base. We got the same. Amount of points earned kobe. I also have the highest points band away from my opponents yet again. This week. I bend away seven bands from crumbs and i would've lost if i did not ban away points from cross judge presiding judge mark z rules in favor of kobe. His wins are legit. He's not just a lucky dog. He is the ban lord he can get. There could be a coach gap and he could also be a dog. it could be both. That's the best to be to be skilled and lucky. Yeah exactly yeah go ahead. i'm currently neither. I'm just I have a roster. That's not playing. Well even my first pick like okay. My still bottling is going to struggle some games and gonna gonna turn stinkers. I expected that. I did not expect the amount of stinker games. I'm getting out of some demonte as my first you picks so. I'm definitely feeling a little sad. Dr talks the hero and my team right now. Loving him But yeah. I'm not not feeling great. I think i'm gonna stay down. The bottom of the standings their tactical tactical really steps it up. He's not doing so well for me. Tactical really has not been getting the points. I was expecting i was like well. Just one locking of course a marksman is going to be racking up all these kids. They're going to be winning all their games. Tactical really has not gotten too much done for me at all and blaze. All of has been like tank in my team. He one hundred point gap between plays all of in every other mid later every week. It feels like got mega point. Seven points in his first game and like three points in a second game. I'm looking over my phone. And i was like ninety points so like what. Am i supposed to do here. Come on blaze. All you got to ban away every single champion appointment later played or else you're screwed by niles or something. I band away. The only positive game that niles had crumbs got negative points for having him. I was struggling for sure. I've seen him have back to back. Negative point games for crumbs this week so at least i don't have house. I guess but a word attending league. So there's no roster swaps to be made because every player has been picked up so You know maybe. I just got a got a big plays olive to to drag out. The games gets more dragons or something you know my my my match also and it came down to like ten point difference or something and i had impact as the last player playing and i was just hoping that e. g. wouldn't as them and that it would go like elder elder dragon and stuff. It was that exist. Uk went back for the elder to help you get those fantasy points to it will. He didn't elder he got. Yeah got infernal soul but the you know this was they had that one fight in the base and impact with him but his tv got interrupted so we got no assists otherwise i actually would have won if he got us on all those skills so close. Yeah yeah it came down came down to the very end. He's been pretty fun. You know it seems like retirees has already won the whole league. She's like four hundred points both second place or something the triple cloud nine however she has just absolutely

Coronavirus Vaccine Q&A: Variants, Side Effects, And More

"You're listening to shortwave from npr. As more and more of the covid nineteen vaccines. Roll out. Here at npr. We've been getting a lot of questions from y'all questions like if i'm vaccinated. Can i still pass the virus to somebody else. What are the side effects of vaccines. How soon until we vaccinated enough people to return to normal so today on the show we have answers as part of a special segment. I just did on another. Npr podcast called. It's been a minute with sam sanders. Yes i am in the hot seat for this one. Y'all if you haven't checked that show out do it. It consistently makes me thank laugh. Cry it is so so good. I'm eddie. And you're listening to shortwave daily science. Podcast from npr. My dear friend who had a how are you. Welcome back to the show. I'm doing well sam. How are you buddy. I'm good. I feel like the last time we had yuan seems like forever ago but i think my biggest question with crow virus. Yes whether i could still pet other people's dogs. Oh that's interesting. That's an interesting version of that story because it was about whether or not you could kiss them on. The mouth is however members over the past few weeks. We have asked you our listeners. To send in your questions about the vaccine all right if folks were able to get the vaccine. Can they still carry and transmit corona virus to other people. So let's start off with what we know for sure right. We know that the vaccines that are authorized in the us. Do an excellent job of preventing symptoms of covid including those really scary severe symptoms. And let's just say the moment here on the show to acknowledge how monumental that is. I mean that means fewer cases that result in hospitalizations given our healthcare workers break that means less people dying every day. I mean that in itself is huge. And that's what the vaccines were designed and tested to do so. As far as whether or not vaccinated person could have the virus in their bodies. Pass it to somebody else. Even if they don't get sick there is some early. And i mean like really early data. That looks promising Some that shows that vaccinated people are less likely to have the virus in their body at all or they carry less virus. So that's all very good news but we still don't have enough data to say for sure that the vaccine cuts down on transmission or by. How much so for now we just kind of have to wait which means that vaccinated folks should still mask up. When they're interacting with people outside their household especially if those people earned vaccinated if we know that the vaccine will protect you from getting severe symptoms. Most likely is it safe for two people who are fully vaccinated to hug or like hang out in the same room. Yeah okay so. Here's what i will say about this. Because we don't know for sure if vaccinated people can carry the virus those vaccinated people just need to think about who else they are interacting with right. So if you're living at home with somebody who has severely immuno-compromised is in vaccinated. You would treat the situation differently than if you live by yourself right but if you are to vaccinated people. Maybe even wearing masks for. That added layer of risk reduction. I think you've reduced risk enough. You know to hug it out especially if you were to people that don't have like close contact with other people. I am a big proponent of risk reduction that still allows us to have some of our humanity right and requested. You know to vaccinated hugging. I would argue is one of those situations. People will argue with me. But i would say so. You know there are so many headlines it seems like every day there's a new variant of the corona virus who knows where they're coming from. How effective is the vaccine against other and newer variants of corona virus. So this is a great question. Great question other stumper. I wish your listeners. With throw me a couple of corona. So what i would say is. This is another situation where things are developing right. We didn't know about these variants like a month or two ago but there are some data that suggests that the vaccine might not work as well for a few of those variants. At this point you know most of the experts that we're talking to say they will still work right. That's the beauty of having vaccines that super super effective that even if they don't work as well against one variant they will still provide protection In fact public health officials are saying that the best way to prevent these variants from really taking off in the us is by having as many people vaccinated as possible so for now with the variants that we're seeing in the us. It looks like the vaccines will work. Well on most of them and still provide some protection on the others which is good news. All right As more and more people in my circles get the vaccine. I'm starting to hear them. Talk to me about side effects and a few folks. I know said i was fine. Second dose. I was like knocked out for a day. Or what in. General are the side effects of the vaccine. Yeah this is a great question. I'm really glad we're talking about side effects. Because i think it's important to talk about them and be transparent so all vaccines can cause side effects right. And that's because vaccines worked by kick-starting your immune system similar to what would happen with a natural infection so if you do get side effects like you get a little bit of swelling from the shot or you get a mild fever is just your immune system doing what we want it to do now. Rarely vaccines do more serious reactions like allergic reactions for example. So it's really important to talk about allergies with your doctor before getting the vaccine or you know if you get the shot and swelling gets worse after a day or if your other symptoms are getting more severe lasting more than a few days you should call the doctor but the overwhelming majority of the time sam for the two vaccines that are authorized for use in the us. The most common symptoms are pain at site of injection swelling As well as fevers chills aches feeling tired and and some people experience very little of those symptoms and some feel pretty uncomfortable. Like you said for a few days especially after that second shot because that first shot your immune system's like oh. Hey what's up what's up what's going on in that second job was like oh you like now. You're trying to see so so that is really your immune system really being kicked in action. So like you said. I've heard of people that need to take the day off after that second shot. Here's the thing. Sam those types of side effects. Go away right and you know. It doesn't always go away after a few days. Kobe right you know what i mean. So i think it's important to be transparent about vaccine side effects but also to remind people like for the overwhelming majority. This is not even close to being as bad as a bad case of covert all right next question for you. Let's say you're grandparent has been vaccinated But you a younger person have not. Can you still see them And is this scenario. A little bit safer for the more vulnerable person. Okay so this is. This is a good one Because it's all about assessing levels of risk. And like i said you know risk is not an all or nothing scenario and there's a lot to work through to make these types of decisions so let's walk through this example so you've decided you really really want to see your grandparents right. Your grandparents has been vaccinated. So you've cut the risk of them getting that bad case of covid down quite a bit. And that's big right before going. I would probably try to quarantine for a while myself Especially if they are in a nursing home. Because i don't wanna bring cove into that facility. Because i'm not just an interact with my grandparents. You know if they're in their own house maybe that's a different story. So that's all like before the visit. And then on the day of the visit one thing i would leave your audience with is when you're seeing anybody like the thing to think about is how do i cut down on the amount of air i am sharing with people right. That's the big if you can carry that one thing in your head. That's the biggest thing because most transmission happens in close contact through the air not through necessarily like groceries or stuff like that so that's important to keep in mind so if i'm going over to my grandmother's and she makes me call her that sam by the way the full grandmother she demands respect. You will not be called. Grandma i would be. I would be wearing a well fitted mask like we talked about. If i could and this is a huge one i would try to take it outside if i could if not i would want to get fresh air circulating in the room because fresh air circulation is one of the best things you can do if you have to be indoors and then the last thing to think about his time right. It's not just proximity. It's also time. So i'd make the visit pretty short too. I mean the cdc suggests less than fifteen minutes if you're indoors but that's variable so it's just about keeping that visit a short as you can and then after the visit like i said same thing is going in. I'd probably quarantine for a bit just to make sure if i got it. You know somehow from being out. And about i don't spread it. Gotcha gotcha We are seeing millions of americans getting the vaccine which sounds good and feels good. But when do we know that were there. Like what percentage of the population needs to be vaccinated before you can have her immunity. Yeah so okay. This is unsurprisingly. Another complicated one so apple over here over what. i'll take it. I i mean it's not my first choice but it's not my last okay. Okay so if you're not familiar with this term herd immunity happens after people have been infected or vaccinated instill. There's essentially nowhere for the virus to go. There's not enough susceptible. People left for corona virus Tune fact so there aren't those like massive outbreaks but there isn't one straightforward number to reach herd immunity a changes based on a lot of things the biggest one probably is the germ itself so for this corona virus. Some public health officials if thrown around that like seventy to eighty five percent of people would need to be vaccinated or infected to. Have you know the level of immunity that we would need and and the difficulty knowing the answer to your question sam like. When do we reach. That number is that we don't actually even know how many people have gotten the corona virus. You know realistically. There's a lot of infections that we don't catch for multiple reasons. There's a lot of people that have a symptomatic infections. That kind of stuff so that complicates we also don't know how long immunity lasts so for some diseases. You get once in your protected for years or your lifetime and that's probably not what's going to happen with this one really got those variants on the scene. You've heard of those variants. Those could play a role here too. So there's a scenario in which this first round the vaccine that folks get first two rounds they'll have to be more vaccine shots down the road. I mean there's the potential for that it would be kind of like a booster situation. Perhaps we don't really know yet right now. It looks like our vaccines are working. Really well but i know that there are some vaccine companies that are looking into developing more vaccines. That would you know basically be kind of a booster situation. So i think you know san we ask like when can we reach her immunity when things go back to normal you know i would argue and people would argue with a gun That herd immunity might not be a reality for this virus like some people might know. It's not it's not that bad. Some places might achieve something close to it but this is a global pandemic right like viruses travel with people who travel so real herd immunity. You know global herd immunity would be tough to achieve. And so you know. I think we have to learn how to live with this virus to be realistic. You know the coronavirus will probably be around to some degree for a long time. And so i think focusing on what we can do you know getting vaccinated if you can continue asking up physically distancing reducing your risk as much as you can the more we do those things right now the faster we will get to our new normal which sam. I am happy to tell you. We'll be much much much more livable than where we are. Now last big picture question for you. Matty like a lot of the answers around these questions are complicated and nuanced and data and information will change over time as scientists learn more things but is there any kind of certainty yet or any kind of forecasting on the uncertainty horizon. About what our springs and summers might look like regarding the scene. Can you forecast what the next few months might deal. I mean say It's it's really really tough. I wish i could give you a better idea of this but what it will say is that i understand the question. And it's it's something that i sit with. You know every single day. It's it's it's really hard right like to know when this thing is going to be over like when things are going to feel better and what a would say is that these vaccines are going to make a huge difference. You know when. I said we're not going to be corona virus free. That doesn't mean that it's going to be in our face like this all the time. I mean i. It could be something similar to the flu. Where still impacts our lives but we have systems to to live with it. And you know if these vaccines are rolled out quickly and equitably. I've heard public health officials talking about this fall or or maybe more at the end of the year like really feeling a lot. More of a return to normal. Even if it's not totally back to normal. But i think more importantly than predicting when it will happen is just you know keeping the faith that it will happen like knowing that this will happen we will return to this newish normal and and that we have agency you know and that we have a say in this so so

"The with kevin mason so many of us are still focused on the pandemic kobe. Trying to get out of it trying to get back to normal. I saw news story the other day about national. Just made me shake my head and kind of disgust and that was one of our city. Councilman has decided. Now's the time to redo the nashville flag. It's not actually national flag. Davidson county's flag. Because back in the nineteen sixties nashville government and davidson county merged. And really with all. That's going on right now. We have some problems with taxation and the rising cost of living in nashville They don't think our flag is representative enough of our community. And we want to redesign it. Now it's only one councilman so far. I'm sure once he brings it up with city council they'll dismiss it out of the way completely but of course some of our online journalists have gotten a hold of it decided well agree that maybe it is time to make nashville look a little bit better on the public spectrum on the nationwide spectrum on the world wide spectrum. I didn't realize there was such a big deal with city flags. I know the chicago city flag. Because it's been a part of my life forever but a city flag. Are we really worried about that. Right now and come on nashville. Let's get back together.

Israeli study finds Pfizer vaccine 85% effective after first shot

"A new study shows a single dose of pfizer and biotechs kobe. Nineteen vaccine is eighty five percent effective in preventing symptoms of disease. Fifteen to twenty eight days. After it's given the findings of the israeli study published in the lancet medical journal come as more countries way whether to delay doses. Our reporter blonde pinch. Husky has more that seems to vindicate. The decision made in the united kingdom. To delayed second does in order to vaccinate more people as quickly as possible. More and more evidence is mounting from similar studies that delaying the second does is a sound policy. And if this were to be proven without a doubt then basically countries like the united states would find themselves being able to practically double the number of people they vaccinate overnight visor and biontech still recommend that a second dose of their vaccine be administered twenty one days after the first separately the companies also said today that they're vaccine can be stored and transported in normal freezers rather than at ultra cold temperatures of between minus one. At-Home COVID Tests Could Become the Norm for Americans

"From wondering. I'm david brown. And this is business. Wars daily on this thursday february eighteenth when it comes to cove it. Here's one thing we know for sure. Widespread testing is vital to slowing down the pandemic so vital in fact that report from the university of colorado released last november found that testing seventy five percent of the city's population. Every three days would reduce infections by eighty eight percent just from people knowing whether or not they're spreading the virus but we can't know better if we can't get tested and depending on a litany of factors like where you live and what time of year it is getting in person test can be at least an inconvenience if not almost impossible. Wait times at test. Sites can be hours long in some places. Some testing locations require a referral from a doctor and is getting a test really worth asking a potentially sick person to show up at a physical location especially if they have to use public transportation to get there. Well no it's not says the us government that's why the white house just signed contracts with six new companies that are producing at home test at home. Tests are already available to some degree in the us but president biden wants to make sure they're really available. Americans will have access to sixty million At home kobe tests by this summer if all goes to plan australian diagnostic company. Aloom just signed a multimillion dollar deal with the us to build a production center for at home tests in the us. There's is a rapid antigen tests that connects to wait for your smartphone. Of course it is twenty twenty one after all business insider detailed how it works. The user connects device to their phone and swabs. Their nose puts the swab into a container of fluid. Then drops the fluid with the sample on it onto the device connected to the phone and then they wait but not for long test can detect covert in a nasal sample and around fifteen minutes. The whole thing sounds like it should be expensive but the test is set to cost thirty dollars and be available over the counter at retail outlets like cvs early clinical studies though small indicate that looms test is ninety six percent accurate when compared to the standard pcr tests. Those pcr tests can take days to deliver results. Meanwhile the ad home test from abbott will be the cheapest option at twenty five bucks. But you'll need a prescription to get it. Which could slow distribution users. Take the test in front of a train teleworkers. Through a video app the test was found to be around ninety. Two percent accurate for positive cases and one hundred percent accurate for negative cases reports business insider even though accuracy rates can be high for at home tests. There's still a chance of user error to that end. Alums smartphone device. Notifies you if there's not enough of a mucus. Sampled attest and avid is hoping that its teleworkers can coach users through proper swabbing technique but there are tests on the market that even with the best intentions can't account for user error the at home test by pixel labcorp which runs for a hundred dollars unless covered by insurance gives. Test takers clear. Instructions on how to swab. But it can't be sure users are doing it right and that opens up the possibility of a false negative result which could spread the virus instead of preventing spread. Now take a guess as to which. I care about but I wasn't able to be on air last week because I had the flu so I get a chance to do my Kobe condolences but I didn't do any last week in either Idea play chief Koby but I didn't like go into legacy and all of that I was once we day Boyce me I can at all. I played the chief Keith Kobe. I'll play a little wind coby. So of course you know on the breakthrough music news. The recent passing of Kobe and his daughter G of course this the world large large loss of Kobe was so tragic a lot of times when we lose celebrities. It's something directly happened. Like with nipsy past. He was murdered. We're back past drugs. Kobe was killed by helicopter. So it's a lot of misplaced anger so Yesterday a clip came out of Gayle. King Interviewing Lisa Leslie WNBA player Hall of Famer. Lisa Leslie what was the initial interview. 'cause I missed what the initial interview you. Good Morning America that I'm saying like what. Why was Lisa Leslie being? I think about Kobe out like the whole evening had yet also was most like our Kelly doing clips they for some reason. The network decided to lead with the Kobe. The backlash started because of the clips released was Gayle King. Asking about Kobe's passer rape allegations and Lisa Leslie's subsequent answer to do it And people of course are automatically up in arms about it about Gayle King asking that asking you know. How could you ask you know? Hello Lisa Leslie. Who in my opinion answered it perfectly outside of the whole? I've never seen Kobe towards me. That that policy the kind of sound like Barbara Walter's talking about woody Allen snuggling but everybody else was fine snoop dogg jammed in with his his old. Well see now. Sales new dolls reaction was unmixed. I I get it in. And it's got a hold of them. Thought it was funny but like he could have responded and reacted to that. Totally different being being an elder statesman in hip hop culture. Like you handle that differently than what you did. Yeah he's Tuck until Buzi while funds. He reacted the way busey Oliver ax to everything for me and this is you know a sensitive topic the passing of Kobe. While it is it it still hurts and it's very painful. One thing I saw people say like why would which he asked Lisa Leslie that in time. She's grieving my question is when is a good time to ask the question. True if your argument is we should ask me live okay. What was his Gotama asked when he was alive when they they did ask about it but we just WanNa listening at the time? Was it a good time to ask after it happened. It was a good time to ask after his finals. MVP's what is a good time to ask so because this is a serious. It's a serious accusation. As a journalist list in Kingston steam journalist you can like dislike journalists. She she does have the right to ask that question to another woman and she didn't say hey. Kobe did it. She said how do do you feel as a woman about the allegations against him and unfortunately yes. That is a part of Kobe's legacy so I know a lot of people feel very strongly. You Bet it but we gotta be careful in that Roy motions blinders from you. Know the the some of somebody's life. Lebron James Chimed in entreated about it. And you know even chastise Gail. I was kinda disappointed Lebron for that because it's like Bro. Come on like once again. I know we're morning but your your act like Kim K.. Asked this question to something like and I felt like is it. I felt like it was a question that we all should have expected to be. act like you said. Unfortunately this is a part of his his legacy part history it happened. We all saw the news reports of it happening when it happened. We also going to court and Lee playing games. We all saw it so you Kinda Shoulda expect it to be asked at some point now you can feel with. You can feel like it's too early to as people still mourning but like if you see when is a good time to ask and as a journalist get with simply doing our job. Aw and like I said I watched gaels. I think you'd like facebook. Live in scream. Live and she was saying that she said that she's she said actually I about it and says she feels like it's time to move on and Gail said she agreed with Lisa Leslie and fought to keep that part in the interview. That was perfect Footnote footnote what a period at the end of the whole conversation. Like there needs to be saying I agree In so I just think we have to be real careful because US regardless of how we feel about Kobe we have to be careful about automatically chastising. People who do feel a way about the past allegation is called because there's a lot of sexual assault victims out there who are triggered by people looking them are defending. Somebody was accused of rape in the past. Did don't do that. Line victim shaming. Yeah exactly because just because you like somebody a lot you know or your fan of them and I also think Koby wouldn't want you guys to jump Gail that way now Like don't don't sit here and try to say you're doing this because you feel the way for Kobe Kobe. Toby wouldn't want it Kobe. Kobe was Kobe. Wouldn't wouldn't get on social media. Make instagram live video. Colorado name and being disrespectful like that wouldn't spend a lotta years after those After what happened to Colorado rehabilitating imaging did a very very very great job at it became very very good advocate for women's issues and rights. And you see how you know how he was with his family. So thank about that when you start running your mouth. How would Kobe once you react that way so they go? What would mom would do.

I from me will be brand. The name says it was very sad Monday morning for me when my a foreign language and received the heart breaking news that could be met with an accident. I thought it might be just a small accident. Maybe some injuries to them. But later when I got to know the person from whom I got inspiration more division meaning spit it. Never give up attitude and his mom and daddy my heat off life was no more. Do started flowing. And I kept crying and his memories with his Number Eight Jersey juicy on me. This started way back in nine hundred ninety nine when I saw the first hour. NBA Live Game on television division. It was a game right from the first quarter of play in the end of the game. My is never went off from this one player. Game and instantly became a fan of him. Whose name was Kobe Bryant? This is where my journey as an NBA defend began. It was only because of Kobe. Brian what will be made me feed getting they will be expedited but NBA. We did meet me is all because of him talking about his memories. Gobi Bryant has given me countless memories since I started following him right from the nine hundred ninety nine two thousand season where he won his first. NBA Championship with the Lakers. I would like to share one game. which was in December? Two thousand between the Mavericks and the Lakers because this game is marked as one of the greatest comeback game in they street of Los Angeles basketball there was a point when in legal were trading with twenty seven points during halftime and also at the fourth and final beard. And we're going to lose the longest winning streak was his the maps which since one thousand nine hundred and this man could be brand. He scored twenty one points in the fourth. "Here's the late Great Stuart Scott talking about the late great Kobe Bryant it's an NBA game. Where a guy does something that has not been done in forty for years you gotta see it to believe it Lakers and the Toronto Raptors now? Last time they met Kobe Bryant a seasonal eleven point. Second Quarter Order. Chris Ma'am back door to Colby. Who just yolks Lakers? Oh down. Fourteen second-half Kobe. Bryant went off command center. The Command Kangaroo boxy Aksu requesting permission to fire. Kangaroo boxer permission granted seven of thirteen from freeland late. Third Quarter Colby House up another three third. Quarter some bunnies would've been Duca dunk now fourth quarter. This just straight silliness. Kobe Bryant first player since since Jordan and eighty seven to sixty point games in one season Colby Bryant cut it out. Kobe Bryant seventy nine points most in a game NBA history. There's the free throw that gives them eighty and then the free throw the gives. Eighty one points. Eighty one took forty six shots and do even at time. Stand out to assist Minutes Away Pablo now discuss how Kobe Bryant and legacy could impact the super bowl. What's next for Philip rivers if he does not return to Los Angeles? It's Tom Brady. Take Advice Joe Montana and Vernon Maxwell is trolling jazz fan. So you probably WanNa stay to all right. I'm sure they've told him before the this week. Our Mba Wednesday doubleheader tips off nets hosting the Pistons we will head to rockets trailblazers and this weaker. NBA Saturday a primetime. Matchup is a big eastern conference battle sixers and Celtics our coverage begins with jumped. Eight o'clock Eastern. We are your pre game show on ESPN and the ESPN an APP. And we are coming to you live right now from the plaza in front of the staple center overlooking all the memorial tributes. I'm here Zach Lowe and Matt Barnes and deck the global reach of Kobe Bryant. It's not just people here in la or in the US mourning for him right. No it's everywhere I mean. It's you talked to Mono Ginobili and his Argentinian mates. You talk to them. He's he's the most popular player in China other than yeah ever. You know when I go abroad every summer. There's One Jersey. No matter how far removed from his playing days that outnumbers all probably the all other jerseys combined. I think that's Kobe. And Lebron got like was starting to get to the word clear number two but it's not close. Well I mean I think the Laker brand is a whole speaks for itself the lineage the history and what they've meant to this city and the League but like I said when you get someone like Kobe who's been able to transcend the game do so much for the game you. It may make sense to be a global superstar. He could speak five or six languages of course spent part of his time growing up in Italy. Just last month he was trash talking. Luca don-shik in Slovenian and when I asked Luka houses accent he said it's really good because that's Kobe. He didn't do anything halfway. We're GONNA leave you here. "There. Because especially about Vanessa the idea that they were competitive about. We're going to be the best old couples ever. I mean you see like I said I think you see the energy and passion when he's in love with something you know the way. He speaks about his kids the way he spoke about his wife. It I it gives me chills now. Because he was in he was just so he called it family He was psychotic in his words about his family time about being able to shower his daughters about being able but to drop them off at school. The reason why he got a helicopter in the first place because he didn't want to be stuck in this traffic missing quality time with his girls knowing that he had to go on a road trip soon. So that's why he was this chopping back and forth how we drive cars because he didn't want to miss those precious moments. He had with kids because he had such a rigorous schedule. He used to come back from a trip. You guys would sometimes get back back in the middle of the night. Wake Up. Take his kids to school in the morning. And as you said then cut the commuting time by taking the helicopter to be able to come to Lakers practice and I like that. He addressed dressed in that podcast to that. He was very honest about our commitment. It's a work in progress with marriage. Their marriage had a very high profile disruption to it Very serious thing happened in Colorado and then just afterward trying to repair their relationship is husband and they kept working on it. But I think that's why people love Kobe. Because we got to see his his good in bed the flaws and all you know what I mean they would never claim to be perfect. Never tried to be perfect but he was real. He made mistakes but he admitted him he tried to move on. He tried to better use looking for that next challenge. And I think that's what humanized him and made him relatable to the rest of the world. You had a very human moment with Kobe yourself back where it's funny to hear that talk about Kobe's enthusiasm you know when he would talk because you my memory by best. Memory of him was I got a text message out of the blue. That just said it's Kobe..

"We are going to discuss a little bit about lebrons feelings about Kobe. Bryant Instagram Post. He put up and what responsibility he feels going forward. Stay tuned it. I think he's the goal low keyed low key. I think to go beat your mind. Matchups McGrady all crazy man. The Black Mamba Susie. Bright Shirt always been a fan especially US number eight man. You have the pro. He used to be lopsided. Sometimes you sweat but that was okay. Because you're putting up eighty one so you really gonNA give Jalen rose in Toronto Raptors. Eighty one bucket bucket eighty-one David w the game. You can't talk about the Lakers and not mentioned Kobe Bryant. That's impossible the guy has five rings. You have five rings you gave us five rings. That's what I love about. You is your indifference to have people view. You're gangster on the court off the court. Can you tell it how it is. Twenty four and a Black Mamba you the best man you the best I see hero doing all kinds of impossible's thing on the court in the definition of passionate about the game all really into being a Laker and playing for the city and the team. You're it's going to take off. They see not only. Are you leaving as Legend when a guy in my eyes Just Cobaine can't say thank you. Kobe get legend Bro. You are strength hoping you mean to. "Brian continue nationwide worldwide. Time does not make sense anymore. Real George Sodano. Ed Page Frank Sola Kevin Blackstone thank you for joining George. You're at Pelican. Celtics last night part of the broadcast. You witnessed firsthand all the emotion and even the consternation over playing when you think about what. Kobe means the players in this league. What strikes you most Tony? I felt like I learned yesterday the depths of which he shaped several generations of basketball players. You know you heard Dwayne Wade. Yesterday talking thing about his relationship with Kobe I saw the video. I mean those guys were peers competitors and eventually worked out right Tracy McGrady and other guy who who's talked about that but these guys I talked to yesterday the Jason Tatum's of the world the Lonzo Ball's Brandon Ingram Josh Heart. Those are guys that have real relationships with him Jason. Tatum went and worked out with Kobe. In the off season they look at him as their Jordan like we grew up with Michael Jordan being the Best S. player live. They grew up with Kobe. Bryant being the best player alive on the planet and he went from being the guy who was the ultimate competitor and wanted the two win at all costs to being a guy who then became a teacher. And I feel like that's something that doesn't get discussed enough and that was something I certainly learned learned yesterday. You know those three Pelican players that played for the Lakers were very much in a really tough spot. Yesterday they were. They felt terrible like they were in a position where the team really felt like they needed to kind of console them make sure they were in the right frame of mind even though they didn't play with Koby they worked out this story around you believe the NBA should've cancelled the Games yesterday today. No I absolutely do not I. My understanding is the general managers around the League met with the League League and they all felt that Kobe would wanna play the games and Carmelo said as much yesterday so I do believe that they did the right thing. Frank Soul you were in the building for the famous sixty one and MSG S G. You were there I first NBA points. I believe you've you've done worked with Kobe after his basketball career as well. How do you remember Kobe on? And off the court no Tony. He came into the League as a teenage prodigy left as an iconic player. I was looking up to be there his rookie year when he was at the free throw line scored his first ever NBA points. Del Harris turned around to us at the scores table. The writers. He said I was there when his father scored his first points. And we're all thinking. Hey this is pretty cool. We're here for this guy. Coby Bryan I ever points. Who knew that? At the time he'd be the third all time leading scorer in the NBA which included that sixty one point game. This Sunday will mark the eleven th anniversary of that game to be in the building that night and watch him play for my money. My two favorite players to watch the cover will Michael Jordan Kobe Bryant for obvious reasons grape players great competitors and thank you for showing a video of him with his daughter. I did that game. On December twenty first and that's were playing the Atlanta Hawks. His daughter Jonah loved trae young as a player and to see the two of them sharing that tender moment together and it just makes everything that has gone on because he was able to kind of transition into this next phase of his life you went from on the soup. I was a superstar. Now it's time to do something else. And it was spending all that time with his family what he paid you've covered the NBA for the entirety of Kobe's career as well and of course before him. How do you begin to tell the story of Kobe? Yesterday I was with my daughter when a stranger came over and told us about the tragedy. My daughter came over and hugged me because she knew of my lifetime around basketball and I said to her. I'm just glad you're safe. Because of the father daughter relationship that Kobe head with all his daughters orders in regard to watching Elgin Baylor and then covering Dr J. Michael Jordan and then the torch being passed to Kobe Bryant when you think about those players and how they all transcended sports and in society in regard to Kobe. I want to concentrate on two years. Two Thousand and three and two thousand and four in two thousand and three. I saw back to back games between the Lakers and the nuggets in first when he scored forty one in La. They came the Denver and a rare back to back against the same team. They had a shoot around. There was voluntary for the Lakers. Kobe was the only one that showed up. We talked and I said how difficult difficulties of you to play the same team the next night. He said I'll show you. He went out scored fifty one ninety three points in two games in two nights against the same team. The next time I saw him was in the mountains of Colorado in July and as I looked at him as there was a hearing that we both were at and he looked looked over at me and he just kind of shook his head. There was nothing for either one of us to say and I thought we go from there to here two thousand and four when he comes back to Denver for basketball ballgame and I looked up half the people in the arena head Kobe Bryant jerseys the other half were booing him. UNMERCIFULLY is so there was such a tangible. Oh relationship between what people are now referring to is the Colorado incident and what Denver Colorado felt about Kobe Bryant especially today in the loss that we all have just had Ramona Shelburne on addressing that in part Kevin Blackstone. How do you begin to tell the story of Kobe? Well I'm always uncomfortable talking about tragedy when it impacts a number of people as did this incident and we only wind up focusing on that person who is of some celebrity athletic celebrity in this case. But the only person I know anything about From Afar in this incident is Kobe Bryant and what I see is amazing arc work of his life. I mean we saw all his artistry as a Basketball Player for twenty years of his adult life. We saw a kid come into the league who appeared to be spoiled. We saw him grow up into a spoilt star who was bickering with someone. One like Shaquille O'Neal and establish star. We saw someone become an alleged rapist in an incident it which turned many people against him and and produced a rift among sports fans who were black and white eight and saw what happened in Denver many of the images of the worst parts of racism in this in this country we saw some will become as frank set an iconic connick player in this league. Then someone become an avuncular figure in this league to younger players and finally someone who doc tragedy which seems to have created a tremendous outpouring of empathy that for now has wipe Dover or washed over all the inventory. I think that had developed around Kobe Bryant for some of the things that happened in his life and I can only think of one thing after all of this and it gets back to something woody brought up but I've always said that the hardest story to cover you're in news is to cover a mother who has to bury their child and I can't imagine what Vanessa must be going through having to bury a child and the a father and husband.

"Of person he was us in La he was superhero. You know he'll be missed like like no other He he's he's from fairly but he had that. La At the best. You know what I learned from Colby you know Before he try to master the game of basketball he was working on mastering the game of Kobe. Before you master anything that you doing you you have to master yourself with discipline Consistency Working on the things that you're not good at And not being afraid to take a shot in the moment and He he taught me how to better myself and to go into the things and never be satisfied. Never be satisfied You know there's always tomorrow you can always do better. You know what I mean you can always give it a better shot bit better effort and a line from Kobe Bryant richer you were on the other team but on the court during one of the most visual moments of Kobe's career and it wasn't winning a title it was when he snapped his Achilles. You're on the bench right at that side of the court. Can you describe. Describe what you saw and then what happened afterward so I remember right there he asked Harrison. Barnes like hey did you kick me right like I could see him mouth it right and we were just no right because if you go back and look at he'd been playing forty eight minutes forty eight minutes like he hadn't missed. Many Games are many minutes and they'll minutes he was he was he was getting that team and he knew that they needed those two free throws it was late in the game. And we're all sitting there like all. Maybe it's just a tweak. Maybe what because you saw him just like like every other Achilles injury. It's just this but Kobe limped over there knocked down two free throws and then limped off the court and so even in those moments. We're all hoping and thinking for the best. Like oh well if obviously if he can he can do that right. Yeah maybe it's just a pull. Maybe it's a strain. Maybe it's a and and it was just I. It's just one of those things that like very rarely is like the real life thing like a movie very rarely right. There's no way that you can you know guys'll Derek jeter tiger woods when they Michael Jordan very you know our greatest heroes a Lotta Times. There's the story seems like a movie and even him coming back and maybe they they didn't get to the the level that they wanted to later in his career but for him to end on the note that he did is something that no one could right. I don't even think he could and the Kobe story is complicated. He did not live a perfect life he was not a saint. The sexual assault charge in Colorado is going to be part of his story. There is no criminal conviction him but there was a civil settlement He did issue a public apology. And then I saw him really spend serious effort through the rest of his life in working on how he treated women how he talked to women what he did for women and for me. That meant a lot that he wanted to do better and we saw him and what he did for Women's sports he was one of the loudest Advocates College Basketball Games. WNBA game supporting the US Women's national soccer team Oregon. Sabrina Sabrina Ionescu just broken up before her game yesterday thinking about her friend. Kobe Richard his impact on Women's sports. I mean talked to. Ah Yeah if you look at Steph curry and you WANNA know one way to really involve a women's sports have daughters that are passionate about it and see somebody that your daughter you you want those role models that your daughters look to to support and he was again like you said one of the loud voices when you got a guy that magnitude chip in to women's sports it has a tremendous impact. And you know you talk about the course of his life. You're right. He was not a perfect human. And I think that's what connected us to him as we watched him from a seventeen year old boy growing to this man that we come to know as Kobe Bryant and wasn't flawless. Would we love a bottom. He was always trying to get better yes he was always trying to get there. So that's what we love about him. We Love the journey of the man trying to try for perfection and in so many ways right so many things that he felt like I could do better every time we see him for he came back stronger in better and it just meant a lot to so many here. Thank you guys so much for everything today. I want to thank everyone who joined the show. Our condolences go out the entire families of Kobe. not to mention marilyn's to coalfield house and xfinity center senator but i have to say that this big ten for basketball you take northwestern out of the equation is there a place you go to penn state's not a great home environment penn state northwestern and the only to every other home venue is first rate like by the way and has real history assembly hall may may be number one i dunno east lansing breslin center maryland's clearly in the top three in this league in terms of home environment west lafayette the the produce got a great home environment illinois hasn't been good recent years but when they've been good basketball they've we've had a great home environment what again michigan chrysler you know yes it's it is really a grind in turgeon said on friday i think it was he said look part of this this year of of the row teams having a difficult time in this league is that everybody's good this year northwestern was close against ohio state last night at home they've been close against everybody but anyway the stigma thing thing i'm fine with it i'm really not that overly worked up about it i don't think it's classless i think it's emotional i think it's competitive i i understand from a coach's perspective and i guarantee you if i were the coach in that position i wouldn't want my players doing that necessarily but at the same time back in the locker room i might i'd say that was awesome in we we came back from six down in the final minute won a game and jalen is all fired up and he's feeling himself now i mean he's confident some of that i i like i'm one last thing before before i run so yesterday in the proble which i did not watch any of them but i was told that they had this rule in place did you see this for onside kicks the rules proposed last year by baliles denver exactly where instead of an onside sidekick you can take the ball at your own twenty five yard line for four th and ten and then a fourth and fifth team excuse me yes fourth and fifteen and so whatever happens on that play get stopped they get the ball there if you make it you keep the ball in it's fourth and fifteen at the twenty five yard line i actually love the idea i really do love the idea but with that said and yesterday i think it was kirk cousins who was the quarterback for the play i think realized they haven't yet cousins apparently i didn't see the any of the pro bowl because apparently came in is the third quarterback for the NFC behind breeze and wilson i guess he was was he the first alternate after rogers dropped out probably probably maybe dak why wouldn't have dak played i dunno whatever but apparently he had thrown for two touchdowns and and it was a close game and they chose the on side kick you know alternative and they didn't make it i was told i didn't see the play but i was thinking about this especially especially with the super bowl upcoming like if i were the redskins and the chiefs jazz scored to make it you know thirty eight thirty four that'd be a good game do your part of let's make it more realistic redskins twenty seven to twenty one you know and they're lining up for we probably shouldn't take the chiefs and say twenty seven twenty yeah but i but my point is if you're the chiefs in your mahomes like the mahomes russell wilson's stuff yes the fourth and fifteen isn't enough off it should be portland twenty i mean i think fourth in twenty more reflects the probability of an onside kick or increases it just slightly fourth and fifteen i dunno for mahomes wouldn't that be like thirty percent at least i yeah i mean especially when you now now against certain defenses like you're almost throwing it up and hoping for a flag if nothing else i mean he's going to do is move around a little bit and all of a sudden areas tire kills wide open all of a sudden if they adopted and i was andy reid i would at least strongly look at it doesn't matter when the game is i'm just going for because why not i know that's that's sort of my point i mean you don't want to give up field position you know at the twenty five yard line that that much but certainly i think that i don't know maybe it's fourth with an eighteen that needs to happen fourth and fifteen for certain teams in certain quarterbacks is going to be so much higher erin than the than what they're looking for the onside kick probability to be let's just say they would like onsite kicks to be recovered instead of six percent of the time which at its way down you know they want it to the whatever it used to be twelve percent eleven percent of the time fourteen percent fourth and fifteen is for too many teams is gonna be the twenty five to thirty five percent probability maybe not thirty five but i would say definitely a one in four i'd say twenty five percent chance chance for russell wilson aaron rodgers patrick mahomes certain teams and that makes that that thing too high to make football really the interesting at the same time but if i'm if i'm the team that's i i'd much rather see kansas city lineup and trying onside kick then have mahomes go for a fourth and fifteen the i think the targets on you want something that can be converted like ten to fifteen percent of the time yeah i think that's the target onside kick where it's at like three percent now or whatever you're right it's way too low that's gotten out of control the other way i think ten to fifteen where you're shooting for all right that is it we're done and for the day enjoy the rest of the day back tomorrow with tommy.

bowl because apparently came in is the third quarterback for the NFC behind breeze and wilson i guess he was was he the first alternate after rogers dropped out probably probably maybe dak why wouldn't have dak played i dunno whatever but apparently he had thrown for two touchdowns and and it was a close game and they chose the on side kick you know alternative and they didn't make it i was told i didn't see the play but i was thinking about this especially especially with the super bowl upcoming like if i were the redskins and the chiefs jazz scored to make it you know thirty eight thirty four that'd be a good game do your part of let's make it more realistic redskins twenty seven to twenty one you know and they're lining up for we probably shouldn't take the chiefs and say twenty seven twenty yeah but i but my point is if you're the chiefs in your mahomes like the mahomes russell wilson's stuff yes the fourth and fifteen isn't enough off it should be portland twenty i mean i think fourth in twenty more reflects the probability of an onside kick or increases it just slightly fourth and fifteen i dunno for mahomes wouldn't that be like thirty percent at least i yeah i mean especially when you now now against certain defenses like you're almost throwing it up and hoping for a flag if nothing else i mean he's going to do is move around a little bit and all of a sudden areas tire kills wide open all of a sudden if they adopted and i was andy reid i would at least strongly look at it doesn't matter when the game is i'm just going for because why not i know that's that's sort of my point i mean you don't want to give up field position you know at the twenty five yard line that that much but certainly i think that i don't know maybe it's fourth with an eighteen that needs to happen fourth and fifteen for certain teams in certain quarterbacks is going to be so much higher erin than the than what they're looking for the onside kick probability to be let's just say they would like onsite kicks to be recovered instead of six percent of the time which at its way down you know they want it to the whatever it used to be twelve percent eleven percent of the time fourteen percent fourth and fifteen is for too many teams is gonna be the twenty five to thirty five percent probability maybe not thirty five but i would say definitely a one in four i'd say twenty five percent chance chance for russell wilson aaron rodgers patrick mahomes certain teams and that makes that that thing too high to make football really the interesting at the same time but if i'm if i'm the team that's i i'd much rather see kansas city lineup and trying onside kick then have mahomes go for a fourth and fifteen the i think the targets on you want something that can be converted like ten to fifteen percent of the time yeah i think that's the target onside kick where it's at like three percent now or whatever you're right it's way too low that's gotten out of control the other way i think ten to fifteen where you're shooting for all right that is it we're done and for the day enjoy the rest of the day back tomorrow with tommy.

"We can say whatever be one about turgeon you can say whatever you want about their team they are dangerous they they can in have the ability on any given night to put it together and beat anybody in the country they have that kind of ability i love linda linda constructed to you know i think he should play seaborn shoot more but they got into that situation where you want to my age because they're getting out rebounded a little bit so he had him in there actually thought he sub too much for for sticks once or twice it certainly in the first half i think it was we gave them arrest maybe for the under eight and i'm like don't do that sticks doesn't have one foul how he's been late game we had a couple of free throws and he was getting a breather there play your best players you know he is i mean cowan played thirty six minutes sticks played thirty thirty five and he got good contributions i mean i like the way sarah smith is defending and i don't mind when he shoots it he's not the greatest a ball handlers necessarily thoroughly as a hell of a basketball game i hell of a basketball game on a truly strange and bizarre and surreal day because of of of what was going on in los angeles but maryland wins it and you know for all those people that were tweeting me and friends the miners saying dude come on you can't lose to wisconsin because you can't get the ball inbounds and it was frustrating it was i was you know the bad that inbounds pass was bad but they played well against wisconsin and if you look at maryland they've now won six of eight games and they've only played poorly in one game in that was the game at iowa and since iowa just as a matter of fact since iowa beat maryland on that night they've now won four in a row okay and they're ranked and they beat rutgers over the weekend rutgers has been rolling they beat michigan last week so iowa our rankings out yet for today because maryland's going down yeah i was gonna jump up yeah they usually come out around noon so not quite okay so i was gonna jump up from nineteenth to inside the top fifteen maryland's gonna clearly move up from seventeenth seventeenth inside the top fifteen so thursday night in college park with the students finally back you got a big time match up and i think we talked about it on friday and how many big games maryland has their schedule and winning sunday we both said it this would be a massive win for those of you saying this tergence best road win never shut up in the end is not even ranked i know that they hadn't won at indiana i understand that maryland won a lot of road games i know that they haven't won a lot of road games against ranked teams that he you know iowa last week was the first time that that's happened they've won plenty of road games okay against good opponents during the turgeon and era i don't consider that to be the greatest road and i think he was a big win don't get me wrong it was a really big win and important win because it keeps them in that top two two three in the big ten only a game behind believe it or not illinois but the upcoming games for them all right listen to this i would home thursday night i was been playing great they're going to be in the top fifteen fifteen when they come in here thursday night and they got pummeled by iowa in iowa city then they're gonna play rutgers who is playing exceptionally well they were ranked twenty fourth last tweak or rutgers yeah records was ranked twenty fourth and they wanna game last week in lost a game last week right the nebraska lost at iowa lost but a close game they may not they may not fall at all they it wouldn't shock me they're still twenty five or so yeah and then they get illinois in this is the real surprise of the big ten illinois currently in first place in the big ten after beating michigan they've won six games in a row including two three on the road a k a league league that you have not been able to win on the road this year the ally and i have one at wisconsin at purdue in michigan in the last three weeks and they play minnesota on thursday and they've been other game on sunday okay iowa and then they get maryland at home maryland's game in their win over for illinois is one of only two big ten losses for illinois and remember marilyn was down big in that game and came back and took pretty much they're only lead on that cowan three to win it fifty nine fifty eight and that's going to be a game that we look back on and maryland fans are going to be very thankful that they got illinois early on because brad underwood there would completely changed his system this year he figured it wasn't what he was doing wasn't working in the big ten he studied he just kinda changed this whole system and and it took a little while to implement that's why took a weird loss to miami why lost not necessarily lost weight loss to missouri but all of a sudden it seems to be working and they've reeled off six straight cowan hit that three to tie it and then got stealing got on the other end of the a wild ending and it was pretty much the last time the students were still in college park for a game because that was in december so you should have phenomenal environments but marilyn's i mean look they've got they've got illinois illinois iowa they've got two games michigan state they have two games with curse they still play michigan they still play ohio state on the road they still play a ohio state and they don't they play minnesota i think they play minnesota on the road as well they may have another game against northwestern you've you've got right now january twenty seven we got a month and a half before the tournament starts and you're going to have eight to ten ten maryland basketball games that are going to be considered heavyweight twenty twenty college basketball matchups the rest of the way those two games with michigan state the one one in east lansing which is they they play their first in then here in late february both of those games have not been assigned time yet yet because both of those potentially are ESPN game day sites i don't think ESPN game days been backed college they were there for the duke you came in oh five or six something like five five they haven't been back since wow that's unbelievable yeah of course part of that is we don't have we haven't had for six years there's a big maryland duke or maryland carolina game in college park were still getting used to what our big games in the big ten arbat maryland's right there a game out of first and and then aaron after you know a a massive win for marilyn and really one of those stunning sort of you know come from behind wins in the final minute of a game jalen stick smith really showed the kind of of three to one and then erin became the very end of the game after maryland had one and after indiana admits that final shot in jalen sticks smith who clearly more likely than not what had been heckled by in indiana fan base or group fans or perhaps even an individual fan headed over towards the area of the court in which he was having an ongoing interaction with some of the fans in that you had seen it from a couple of minutes earlier in the game and basically started screaming my effing house okay to the point where he was demonstrative where people were throwing things at them from the crowd in and here comes turgeon sprinting across the cord and very emotionally grabbing jalen sand get out of here we don't do this and turgeon opened opened up i have not heard the press conference i'm going to watch it i read the the opening remarks where he spent you know a minute or two apologizing to indiana basketball who's your nation archie miller in the indiana fans and players for jalen you know doing doing what he was doing he said he jalen was taunting the crowd and said it's a great environment tough environment the emotion got him and we know this is maryland basketball ask welfare that's not jalen smith you know he's the opposite of his personality yeah and so in defended him in you know during that press conference by saying those of you you that no jalen that's not as personality that's not who he is and then jalen tweeted out something at the end apologizing as well so my reaction to this is not really worked up over the over jalen smith's reaction i sort of like the fire i like the intensity it's certainly something right understand the coaches reaction okay i do i understand that coaches reaction of we're gonna we're gonna win with class we're going to win uh with with understanding that we may be playing this team again in maybe a month in the big ten tournament or a month and a half or whatever but you know what i mean i'm a maryland basketball fan college park was the only place that coach k. wouldn't let his players come come to our his players family their families come to he wouldn't let his own family come to games college park i'm a maryland fan i remember when gravest vasquez used to taunt the fans at cameron indoor you know alabama when he took that last minute three against NC state ended the did the shimmy yeah yeah in so i it it seemed out of character completely for jalen we don't know what was being said i can tell you this that indiana fans according to a lot of big ten longtime big dent ten fans are really rough on the on the opponents in the same way that maryland fans tend to be really rough i mean you want to see behavior by fans towards a player go back and just see if you can find the f. JJ rettig chance you know the the things that the duke players had to put put up with so i i sort of understand it from every side i'm just telling that from my perspective i've no problem that he got super emotional final super hyped up super pissed at the interaction that he had during the game in the heckling that he was probably taking from the indiana fans and i saw a fire in his his belly that i hadn't really seen but we've seen here in the last few games and so i'm not really i'm not that worked up or upset about it to be honest with you i'm gonna take it a step farther i'm glad i'm happy to see it as you said i i wanted to see that fire it's part of basketball and as long as it doesn't cross any lines as long as he's not going into the standard of course and you know the the profanity to take to a to a different level in the this is my house my floor yeah no problem with that i i don't really think there's a way you can i don't know here's the thing about vasquez when vasquez used to interact with opposing fans there was sort of a lovable aspect to it and a good natured aspect to it on the fan by the time he got to be a senior and people newham in new you know i think a lot of ACC fans hated vascular hey i mean he took a lot of abuse and he loved it uh-huh well to the NC state one was after they were just channing racial slurs that in the whole game that's true and that either i think it may have been at virginia tech your yeah we had some of that in that game where he went for like forty one in double overtime double overtime on the road but you know it's it's sports it's emotional it's intense you know as a maryland basketball fan i've been looking for you know some real new rivalries he's new controversies to ourselves involved in while winning of course and because it's really been sort of a square peg into a round hole here for the first six seasons and now in six years i mean now we're sort of ingrained in this league and it's not always pleasant to be a part of this league but this year is really interesting interesting because the league is so so competitive in so good and the one thing i will say do you remember when dan dockage did maryland's it right.

conference by saying those of you you that no jalen that's not as personality that's not who he is and then jalen tweeted out something at the end apologizing as well so my reaction to this is not really worked up over the over jalen smith's reaction i sort of like the fire i like the intensity it's certainly something right understand the coaches reaction okay i do i understand that coaches reaction of we're gonna we're gonna win with class we're going to win uh with with understanding that we may be playing this team again in maybe a month in the big ten tournament or a month and a half or whatever but you know what i mean i'm a maryland basketball fan college park was the only place that coach k. wouldn't let his players come come to our his players family their families come to he wouldn't let his own family come to games college park maryland fan i remember when gravest vasquez used to taunt the fans at cameron indoor you know alabama when he took that last minute three against NC state ended the did the shimmy yeah yeah in so i it it seemed out of character completely for jalen we don't know what was being said i can tell you this that indiana fans according to a lot of big ten longtime big dent ten fans are really rough on the on the opponents in the same way that maryland fans tend to be really rough i mean you want to see behavior by fans towards a player go back and just see if you can find the f. JJ rettig chance you know the the things that the duke players had to put put up with so i i sort of understand it from every side i'm just telling that from my perspective i've no problem that he got super emotional final super hyped up super pissed at the interaction that he had during the game in the heckling that he was probably taking from the indiana fans and i saw a fire in his his belly that i hadn't really seen but we've seen here in the last few games and so i'm not really i'm not that worked up or upset about it to be honest with you i'm gonna take it a step farther i'm glad i'm happy to see it as you said i i wanted to see that fire it's part of basketball and as long as it doesn't cross any lines as long as he's not going into the standard of course and you know the the profanity to takes a to a to a different level in the this is my house my floor iii yeah no problem with that i i don't really think there's a way you can i don't know here's the thing about vasquez when vasquez used to interact with opposing fans there was sort of a lovable aspect to it and a good natured aspect to it on the fan by the time he got to be a senior and people newham in new you know i think a lot of ACC fans hated vascular hey i mean he took a lot of abuse and he loved it uh-huh well to the.

"To activate the offer mybookie dot AG and then use my my promo code kevin kevin dc all right let's talk about what was going on in what you and i were both watching when the kobe news broke broke first of all i have not asked you aaron when it broke how did you find out or how did you find out about it you're obviously watching the maryland game i know that so oh i don't know there were like eight nine minutes left in the game somewhere around there ten minute mark of the second half what how did you handle it so i was i was just i was is in bed i had my laptop i was watching the game and all of a sudden i see like the very early one of the early tweets re tweets of TMZ and miami thing it was just kinda blasted out on texts and i watch thirty seconds of the game after it was on and i could hear you know i remember at the end saying oh in in maryland gets a big win i was like i kind of look like oh they they won okay but yeah for for those two minutes i was barely watching the game yeah because when the it i started to trickle out on social media maryland was down eight they had gone from up fourteen in the first half to down eight in the second half and the game let me just say this spectacular game which i recorded and went back and watched the final ten minutes of late last night because i really felt like i did not know what the hell was going on in those final ten minutes we were switching stations in watching the kobe stuff in on social media following the story but this game started with a first-half from maryland that followed the second half against northwestern that if you add the two together the back tobacco cabs they had scored ninety six points in those two halves fifty one in the second half northwestern forty five in the first half yesterday in bloomington against indiana and it was like doc i've mentioned about the northwestern game that he had gone to something that he typically hasn't done in the past i don't know how much he's really done and it's more of a five out free free flowing let your playmakers make plays couple of rules offense you know wasn't micromanaging each possession and it turned out you know really really well l. for them at northwestern soon as you go into indiana and in the first half i mean things are flowing now they're running more half court offense and more half court sets you you know than they did in the second half against northwestern but at one point maryland was shooting sixty seven percent and they were nine for thirteen from behind the arc early in that game they could not miss but either could indiana but maryland did build a fourteen point lead that was cut to nine at half and i swear to god i said to corbin at halftime erin and i go i'm gonna tell you right now there's going to be a point in the second half where maryland is going to trail in the game he's like they're up nine i'm like they're gonna be down at least one one at some point in this game well they weren't down one they were down eight within it was twenty th they out scott outscored twenty four to seven to start the second half and like the first six minutes indiana went eleven for thirteen to start that second half and with you know they built a sick the eight point lead was built here it is they won up eight with eleven forty five to go so an eight minutes and fifteen seconds back in stay at erased a nine point deficit and were up eight so there it is that was the twenty four seven stretch for them and then it was sort of the rest of the way a game in which maryland was hanging in there there are a couple of moments where it could have turned ugly indiana missed a couple of easy shots missed a couple of open threes is that could have extended you know a seven point lead to ten and then who knows but maryland hung in there they really did they hung in there they kept closing it back to six back to i five and then it got you know back to seven on a on a breakaway dunk right around four minutes to go and then i thought down the stretch the first first crucial play for the turps at seventy one sixty four down seven and you're heading for the under four time out indiana eric i alam l. a. misses a a tough dry baseline in a layup but it was a layup he should have made it they missed it and down comes indiana with a chance to stretch it to nine or ten and we're under four minutes now and they missed en- daryl more cell grabbed a key rebound and then he went coast to coast it wasn't smooth but he got to the rim he scored award got fouled they went to the under four television timeout maryland's down five and he's got a free throw on the other end they could have been up nine or ten but but instead they've got a chance to cut it to four which they did more cell did not play well in the first half at all he sat a lot net first-half looked like you know turgeon was a bit upset with him offensively defensively but we've seen this with their more cell before like in big moments down the stretch he comes up with clutch place ways so they that cut it to four then they fell behind by six seventy three sixty seven and then cowan makes a huge three you know off a off a hand off screen fra a hand off pass and then screened set simultaneously by sticks and he makes this three in its seventy four seventy but then they go up by six and now we're down to close to a minute to go and then sticks makes a driving layup which is not a comfort zone shot dot for him in fact i didn't like the shot at all but he made it and at seventy six seventy two with a minute to go maryland called their last time out after that bucket and they set up the pressure and they gotta steal cowan actually got his hands on a pass jalen smith came up with it they got it to wiggins and that's the shot right there erin because that's an impossible shot he is he was guarded it was contested he knocks down a deep three and with fifty seconds to go it's a one point game and and on the other end maryland gets a stop they don't have any timeouts left they get the rebound anthony cowan gets a quick you know high ball screen corrine from smith who dives to the paint cowan hits him he catches it puts it on the floor and scores i saw a lot of indiana people saying that jalen had walked worked on that plane no he didn't i mean what planet are you on to think that he traveled on that play tracy jackson davis on the other end on what should have been a game winner her for them clearly traveled or carried the ball and it wasn't called and you're not gonna get that call either but sticks made a really good catch got us got himself together to one hard dribble rebel and laid it in with fourteen and a half seconds to go and then merrill got the stop on the other end but it was really a lucky stop in many ways because indiana got hard to get anything better than basically typically uncontested from three feet because sticks was actually stumbling away from jackson davis who missed the floater and in maryland grabbed the rebound and they seventy seven to seventy six by scoring seven point straight to end the game after being down six crazy easy game both teams played well i the couple of things stood out before we get to what happened at the end of the game with jalen smith number one is this anthony cowan was was absolutely unguardable in this game on guard -able and what's really interesting is i got a lot of friends and you do too probably they'll they'll read the box scores as only six fifteen or the other night he was only two for ten or whatever watch the game okay he's impacting the game in many ways in on many nights without outscoring a lot or with bad shooting you know he can have it he's had it off night's shooting here recently but played very well he got wherever he wanted to go at any point he was the most difficult cover on the court i would like i am going to make time to go watch the arch i like watching the press conferences after it here the coaches i haven't heard archie miller but they had no answer no answer for cowan they also did not have an answer for sticks smith who got set up by cowan and i al a bunch in the game but but wow the jump that sticks his made here in the last couple of games air you know do you know how many people including my sons were massive maryland basketball fans who just thought sticks was way overrated for much of last year and this year and i kept saying when you got two first place playing the five spotty should be playing the four spot but but he's see how many times have i told you in the weeks since we've been doing the podcast i've said he's got to shoot more key shooting those threes he's got he's got one of the best strokes on the team four for six from behind the arc yesterday a career high twenty nine after setting a career high twenty five the other night another double double his third straight double double in this stretch of wins over purdue northwestern in indiana he was incredible yesterday dominant in more block shots yesterday he's he's got more lopa he's getting more comfortable with his post moves as of point probably three weeks ago oh i definitely had conversation where we were like oh there's no way he's a first rounder now at least we get him for another here so i don't know where exactly it happened how it happened but he's definitely kicked into a completely different gear his mentality just seems completely different yeah he was he was i'm not gonna say passive but he definitely wasn't assertive early on and now it seems it seems like he's in all right i'm not gonna you know it's cowan's team but he's the guy i mean sticks difference maker when you got a team and i was going to get to this point next but when you got a team that does have scores i'll talk about here about this momentarily and now you've got a guard a five-man out to the three point line and you've got guys like cowen who it with open with an open floor and open paint are gonna really really dice you up your dangerous so here's the other thing about maryland look we a lot of you think that i always get get way too excited after a win or two bullish in don't criticize them enough when they lose whatever had it i tell you how i feel and i've been critical last year was much more critical of this team in their pace of play particularly than i been about this team because this team does have scores they do have shooters maryland's three point percentage shooting this year's been terrible but i've multiple times i've said on this podcast on the radio show it doesn't make sense to me because you know wiggins has a great stroke cowan can really shoot it i alec can really shoot it jalen smith can really stroke it from deep dante scott can shoot it sorelle smith can shoot it and that you know remember with wiggins a couple times and i said to you they're going to be some of these there's going to be a night here where he's going to go five for for ten from from behind the arc and he's gonna end up with twenty six he's coming off the bench right now i don't think he's playing enough minutes i'll just tell you play twenty six minutes yesterday what while cowan going in smith got thirty six and thirty five respectively he's i think just as important in in some ways but whatever seems to be comfortable and he hit a huge three ended up with with eight points on two for five from behind the arc but they've got guys and see this is what makes them very very dangerous is more nights than not they're good good would defensive team i thought they were not very good defensively yesterday but i also give indiana credit archie miller runs great stuff they get the people open in didn't matter about zone or man i i mean i i don't know what turgeon was thinking in that bench was thinking 'cause they tried so so many things defensively and indiana kept getting shots at the rim they miss them in the first half they didn't miss any at the start of the second half but but they ran good zone stuff they ran good man stuff they got a good team they have a very good team they're fifteen and five in maryland our own had beaten them by sixteen or seventeen but they had a thirty point lead in the game in college park you know a month ago but but maryland is hard hard to cover and i know there have been these games were they've really struggled to score but i think it's a product of this league and how tough it is defensively and how tough it is on the road and how well scouted teams are but they have i mean you're crazy just try to be objective about it.

"kobe" Discussed on First Take

"He's Mike Meets Magic. There were some. I'm big shock. Who would dare the greatest athlete in the history of Sports Michael Jordan the most talented the hardest worker the most competitive the most successful? Who would dare try to match that? Not as something new six foot. Six shooting guard studied his mannerisms. Clearly as we all how did write his moves the way he dressed everyone. Kobe didn't say no watch this. I'm going to do in in chest. It's called an asymmetrical strategies. Someone opens one way if you counter with the same move since they have the initiative. You're always behind so there's something called an asymmetrical strategy. They opened one way. And you put pressure in in another way so you don't have to face them head on. Kobe said No. There's nothing GonNa be asymmetrical about my strategy. I'm going to do Mike better than Mike and he almost got there like. It's the most insanely competitive. No smoke and mirrors. I believe in myself the that we saw in that generation and the fact that that he would be the one to dare to do it and then basically do it is is a testament to the kind of belief the atom in himself and I think why he could be satisfied with himself in his second act conversations that Cobian. I've had over the years I would. I would submit to all of you. That the biggest reason why he was so happy now even more so than it is playing days is because he had more control over his own. Happiness you know when I was hosting quite frankly that was on. ESPN two from two. Two Thousand and five to two thousand and seven people were looking at me and they were talking about my interviewing skills and you know what had the potential to be one day and they looked at somebody like Oprah could be you and years to come copay came up to me and said an no disrespect to oprah whatsoever. He was like the hell with Oprah Harpo. It's not about being in front of the camera. It's about owning it. It's about owning your own product. It's about being control in control of of your own destiny. He never felt that way until the twilight years of his career. He comes into the league straight out of high school. He's got approved he's he's one of the early ones that depart from high school to come straight to the pros. Okay after Kevin Gone Net knows boys okay fine. So he's got something to prove He's an all star star before he's even a starter so he has to prove he's a starter he becomes a star but you haven't won a championship. You Win a championship but you you did. It was shot dead. Ultimately you do a without shack you carry your own team and people forget that that particular time when shack departure from the Los Angeles Lakers not shack but there were people in the NBA and the outskirts of La Community. Rather that wanted to who do serious harm to cope because they blamed him for shack. The party why was that significant because shack was the guy that shack a clause he will go into the community he was very filling philanthropy. Can what have you very charitable with. Its time and and an all the giving that he did they took it as a personal affront compromised because of Kobe Bryant and they wanted to do him homage shack ultimately stepped in and was like right now. This is just basketball. Don't lose perspective. You do nothing to that man. There were people literally who want to do harm to him. So what does Kobe Do. He's knows about all of this. He senses all of this and he says I'm GonNa make everybody love me again because I'm going to deliver the one thing that they value and that's championships. And so he i. He demands trade then after that the Trade Kwame Brown acquired Pago so he goes to three consecutive. NBA Finals. He went back to back. Titles you know over Orlando over Boston okay. So then that question was answered. Then okay okay. What are you going to do here because Lebron boys go to Miami Kobe's ready to go? But the Gaza fading then ultimately coaching changes injuries. These comments to play and whatever everywhere he turned there was always a question to be answered questions from somebody else that he had to answer about his life his career his destiny is vision. What his goals should be and then ultimately he retires from the game of basketball and the question stop them from everywhere else but in his own self? He had questions questions that he wanted to answer for him. But he was no longer feeling the need to defer or or to you know capitulate a two or to appease anybody else other than himself the happiness Katie from he had control as far as the legacy. I WanNa ask you you this. My Dad always says this quote how you do anything is how you do everything and I feel like he did everything with excellence and he inspired so many people including myself. You see a picture. Sure Kobe to step your game up. You want to hone your craft in another level and I think how he led. He was a trail blazer. He was a pioneer. Can you speak to some of that as his legacy legacy inspiring others shore. I mean he inspired athletes in all sports as Laura eluded to I think he inspires people outside of the world sports he certainly transcended sports in his impact in the people. Who cared for him he? He's spawned a generation of people. who were Kobe fans? who weren't even Laker Fans Ryan Clark who we all know and Love was? He texted me yesterday. Saying I never met the man and I'm crying. I'm sitting in my house crying right now for man that I never ever met Ryan Clark will tell you he's not a Laker Fan. He's a Kobe Fan Kobe hat. He inspired a Phantom of passion. His fans that was unique. It was actually even even different. I covered Michael Jordan. That's how I start. We all came to this from different places. I started in Chicago covering Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan was beloved everywhere including I fans of teams that wanted to beat him but there there is a specific passion. And I can't put my finger on how diagram there are Lakers fans and there are Kobe Fan. And there's an overlap but they're not all right and that's exactly right and even Jordan didn't inspire that there is a passionate dedication education amongst the hardcore. Kobe Fan that I think you're you're touching on campus. He created sadder version. Why did he he may want to be a better version of our he created stands? Kobe was the embodiment of practice. Makes Perfect. It's perfect practice makes perfect perfect. You take your passion and you work it until your craft is perfect. That's and because of that because you put in the work and it wasn't just going through the motions but it was with your passion at that point. Kobe always believed he was going to win. He had perfect self confidence But it wasn't just kind of baseless faith it was faith because he put in the work and therefore had no talent right and it was born of his passion for the game. So I think anyone I think you just mentioned molly. You had a an image of Kobe. You were inspired. Because it's it's like this. What is this thing that I loved to do and if I really love it and want to be great at it I have to work it until I know? There's nothing else to work and I got it. I didn't don't even want to do the show today. I felt sick to my stomach in Mamba Mentalities in my mind you gotta power through it. You know one thing that I would say to about what Kobe brings brings to the table. Just From a legacy standpoint is the credibility that he lends to anything that he puts his stamp on and I would put women's sports in that category specifically glee the WNBA and and just the work that he did to add credibility where look there should be embedded credibility. But there's not all the time and for Kobe to stand on anything and say that it was good or that it had potential was to mean that it would instantly be looked at differently and in a more positive light and I think that's one of the things that makes all of us want to be better when you think about him and there's a genuine quality because he opened himself up to be viewed by everybody in in any number of ways that then he can look at everything from that standpoint. And that's how. I started champing women in Sports. By the way I love the question with. Oh Steven A.. Because what is it. I can't answer.

"kobe" Discussed on Big Time Basketball

"You know right now. I was thinking because I'm always trying to put myself in and like Kobe shoes. Would he would be thinking right now and you know when he he probably would tell the world on more the more my daughter please. I'm okay more my door this with Kobe probably would say right now. Like it's just like I mean just like McDonald's APP if I'm wrong or right but I don't know if I ever met a guy like Cova Eh. Not Mitts Li like the Milton toughness. How strong he was? I don't know if I ever seen a guy like Kobe. Bryant on and off the court I have now perk. You're exactly right. I mean his his work ethic his mentality talked a lot about the Mama mentality but it almost didn't seem real you. Some of the stories seem like fictional. There's no way he was up at four. Am in the gym. There's no way that in his last NBA Gay game in two thousand sixteen. When I was general manager of the Phoenix Suns the team came off the court in a bunch of guys stopped on the way down to the locker rooms rudy? There's a video room where the video guy said a approximate coaches offices in just about every player in uniform who could fit into the room sat there because the Lakers game was a little behind our game. It was still going on. I believe they're playing the Utah Jazz to watch coby Bryan score sixty points in an NBA game in his in his late thirties. And then the stories about well. He was at his office working on the next chapter of his life with us. Businesses at eight. AM The next day. That doesn't seem possible. Who does that is? Kobe did Kobe. Not many others would do that. And and so. That's the kind of the second chapter. The first for me is is the Celtics years alongside Kendrick in scale and the great teams. We had in Boston. The second is as jam and the sons from two thousand thirteen to twenty eighteen eighteen. All of the young players are best player in particular in Devon Booker. They idolize Kobe. The they looked up to the guy. And and you talk to kids some. We hadn't phoenix some some in the pre-draft process that we didn't acquire what you ask them. Who Do you model your game after? Who's your favorite player? It was coby coby coby over and over again and so so just the respect that those guys had for him. A competitor in Phoenix got a lot of attention here in his last game against the suns against Devon Booker favorite player of of all time. They're playing a game in Memphis. It's about to start right now. And I imagine Devon is Gut it knowing him like I do and in. Kobe signed shoes. They said book be legendary. Sorry just seeing how much that meant to Devon as a young player. The Kobe not only knew who he was that he respected him. I remember Kobe telling Devon Kobe was guarding. Devon Devon tried to move movin Kobe say. Hey you can't do my move that's my we can't steal my move and endemic thought that was great coke. Kobe realize the impact he on Devon while he was still playing in his last years. There's a Laker. You know all this. I mean it's. It's maybe trivial but I think on days like today's important to remember the good times and just the impact. He had on people in short time on this Earth Earth which which for me you know transcended sports and really is another reason. This is such an awful day. LISTEN TO RADIO DOT COM sports. I'm Steve cerruti alongside Oxide former sons Jim Ryan mcdonagh NBA champion Kendrick Perkins Talking about the life and the unfortunate death of of the legend Kobe Bryant and just a couple of things that we've been pass as long trae young tonight is wearing number eight in honor of Kobe. Bryant they took an eight second backcourt violation. We've seen in the rapper spurs game Both of their games. I think I believe there was a twenty ninety. Four second shot violation to start the start the game in honor of number twenty four Kobe and there was a guy who owned two numbers in the NBA. In was it was almost like you know he was two different guys in those two numbers as well. I think it's interesting to Ryan that you know you. How many guys are growing up idolizing? Kobe Bryant wanting to be like Kobe Bryant but the really only is one Kobe Bryant with the talent and in that mindset like you know how hard was it sometimes. It'd be like I know that you want to be like Kobe. I know you wanNA play like Kobe. Kobelco there's only one koby like there's only one really great all-time great player that can be that way and it was Kobe Bryant. What was it like trying to get the best out of guys because we know we know Koby as you said like with Devon Booker like? Kobe was always willing to help guys out as rick. bucur join Israel. He said he wouldn't give away all but secrets but he would tell you how to work. And how to be the best guy you could beat around. Butler told us that multiple times that he sort of changed the way he thought about his career. What was it like like you know you because you were? GM and assistant jam and the time that Kobe was there when a lot of guys came up looking. You know wanting to be the next Kobe Bryant. What was that like kind of scouting those guys and knowing that that brand ran a basketball with what a Lotta guys wanted to play like well it was something where you try to figure out how to deliver the message to young players? That don't try to be like Kobe because you can't can't do what he does. It was beautiful. It was poetry in motion. As you guys know that's part of the reason that he was so popular as a player with the turnaround fadeaways in the step back up and under one of things that came to mind. I'd be interested to get perks. Take on this. As well was how creative he was as a player. I mean. Remember the one handed shots. I mean he chewed one one handed right handed and left hand in one of the things. I remember in the finals. When we played the Lakers I camera for his two thousand and eight or two thousand ten where Cerruti in the finals team sent as you can imagine they send a bunch of plays into the League office looking for any kind of advantage whether it's fouls traveling calls at Lakers sent a bunch of film on Paul Pierce Saint? Paul was traveling and and we sent a few plays in on Kobe. He had this mover. You kind of do an fake and step through and we travel in the leaks. Actually it's not and so we went and looked at the rule book and he said Yeah. That's right how come nobody does that. Then we we started laughing and we said well. Nobody can do that or nobody knows to do that. And that was Kobe athleticism to do it in the mentality to do it. which perk imagine made him extremely difficult to guard? Now you right right. And Look I'm glad you know nickleback ah just host Rudy through what I told you at the top. Put a show about US though Celtics in Boston Gays Ryan Man. Listen we came to the point where we was like. You know what we're just GonNa let Cole. Oh begin he is and we gotta take everyone else out. And hopefully he stroked all we can do is make him. We could contest put a hand up. I mean obviously you guys did a great job but you know the only person that was stopping. Kobe was code. I don't give a damn if men cagey was going trapped or whatever the case may be you you just had the wish and pray that he had off night and I was telling Ryan I was telling them to rudy. Remember game seven of the finals. The the one that we loud that I didn't play and Kobe was like six twenty four from the field right but he hit eighteen rebounds. And I'm thinking had eleven offensive rebounds like that's how bad he wanted like you can't teach K.. Stopped it as wheel like as just like I mean he. He was just differ man. He was different like you know a Lotta guys. Try to compel you say man. He could be. Kobe was in the League of your mom. He was in a legal result. Most guys we're going to We're going to wrap it up here. We are going to have more reaction tomorrow on Gal Pals mcdonagh Nile beyond starting at eleven eastern time with more reaction on the life in the passing of Kobe. Bryant a legend No passing away tragically in a helicopter accident today at the age to forty one Ryan I appreciate you hopping on. I'll talk to you tomorrow. We're going to be back with more gas and more perspective. Here's looking forward to talking to you about that. Because at this point I mean for for for as much of a tragedy is what what is the the the great thing is we can look back at great moments that we had and I mean we haven't even gotten even scratched the surface on all the things that we loved about Kobe. And that we you know you know that that made him one of the most memorable players of all times. I want to thank you for hopping on per thank you as well for on short notice. I know what is such a really difficult time for you to hop on his law and give you a perspective so I want to thank both of you a ton. Yeah no problem man Ryan Cerruti. I have a good day man. Remember what would Koby Duma. That's what I'm standing about. Twenty or in sports a live by live by the man Ryan. Thanks so much. We'll talk to everybody tomorrow..
