Is Eating Local Really More Sustainable?
"Researchers alexander stein and fabien. Santini just published a fascinating paper on the sustainability of local food systems in the political discussion. They write the promotion of local food. Systems and short supply. Chains is sometimes presented as a means to increase the resilience of the food system. And it's also suggested as a means to improve the environmental footprint of the food system and quote so in their paper. They've reviewed scientific literature on the environmental social and the economic aspects of sustainability and. They reached some surprising conclusions. First off is eating local actually easier on the environment. When consumers tried to eat local they often focus on how far their food has to travel from its source to their plates. You might remember a popular book called the hundred mile diet which exemplified this approach. Barbara kings hovers bestselling animal vegetable. Miracle is another example and one assumption behind this trend is that eating locally will lower the carbon footprint of our diets however this is not necessarily the case for one thing shipping large quantities foods in cargo ships or trains may actually burn less fossil fuel than transporting the same amount of food across much shorter distances in hundreds of small trucks and now just consider thousands of consumers driving two farms one by one in their cars to pick up their local food. This thinking also assumes that transporting food is the only or even the primary factor in how much carbon is emitted in the production of that food but in fact food production can produce a lot of greenhouse gases prior to this final leg of the journey in fact stein in santini conclude that the carbon footprint of diet depends a lot more on what types of foods you choose then. It doesn't how many miles they travel to reach your plate.

Tumult Disrupts Israeli Parliament as Netanyahu Era Ends
"Netanyahu served as israel's prime minister for the past twelve years the vote to replace him yesterday in the knesset was partisan as what we see in congress here in the. Us sixty is fifty nine. Nays with one person abstaining. Laura king is an la times global affairs correspondent. She's currently in israel. And was there for the knesset. Vote that saw netanyahu prime minister. Welcome to the times laura. Thank you described that final. Vote itself the scene. That happened during then afterwards. Well as long as the lead up to the vote. I think since the very last moment that something could go haywire for the new coalition and so the vote was about as close as it could be it was sixty to fifty nine with one abstention and so i think there was just an enormous insipid relief on the part of the new coalition. That was trying to ask prime minister. Benjamin netanyahu that they had actually pulled this off and i heard there was heckling there towards holly bennett. That new prime minister. Yes when he rose to speak there was a really concerted amount of heckling from the the allies of the outgoing prime minister barely letting him finish his sentences at times his kids who are in the gallery and they were making little heart symbols with their hands. "I was so interested. In kind of myth. Busting at the beginning of this episode. Is that. I don't think we need to let stephen king get off with this being like the novel. He doesn't remember writing. Because the sti- the stylistic touches here are not like the you know Booze ravings of of a drunk here right like there's real stylistic choice happening here and i think he should get credit for. This is the most elegant novel he has written sits carry easily easily stylistically aesthetically. Structurally it has this. Very kind of crystalline structure. All these pieces you know. It's kind of like a bucky ball right. it's all of these joints that are all touching together and kind of spinning out from one another. And this whole this. Like i said the whole last fifty pages beautifully written in that way And beautifully bleak too. Because you know these people have to keep living. And you know in stephen king novel sometimes. That's the worst. Pardon what in the king of verse We've actually had retouched on a lotta this indirectly but this is the segment meritas kind of unpack or note any references to other. Stephen king works that We happen to notice in. You know this this novel more than any other up up to this point is a putting putting those connections upfront. In the plot in ways that mean we've already talked about them But if there's anything else you wanted to add. I'd be interested in hearing it. North of talked about a mile bannerman. You know being a character. Castlerock explicitly One thing i'll add Already mentioned that. You know whatever's happening in castle rock is something like the overlook right this kind of just the dry battery or the the the thing that makes bad stuff happen right. The force once that desires at that exist in those conditions One of the ways that the midst of the legend frank dodd is described. is that You know you'll see him one day In his in his black rain slicker which he always wore but his face like in his face. he'll have silver is Which is precisely the way that you can recognize a manifestations of it in it right. Pennywise has silver is So king already kind of like again like teeing up certain things or i think he's necessarily doing this ready..

"We haven't haven't done here. No no no. I think i. I made the points that i wanted to make. Which is that like. I think you see here. King like working through not only Sort of genre modes right like sort of a Psychological thriller with some realism versus lake. This weird supernatural element that he's pulling in from almost like the background of his previous works Like the sort of logic of the overlook and also Other things like the fact that like this is the point where king is like okay. I'm going to write more castle. Rock stories is kind of the. The other thing that i think is interesting here. I think it's kind of the real birth of the king verse right. I mean we've seen little bits of references and things like that especially around. Tk and and all that kind of stuff. But you know this one begins as a kind of sequel right but like this kind of conceptual sequel ryder Geographical sequel more than anything else And but you know this is where he saying. I'm gonna be writing novels. That directly like plot points hinge on you knowing some stuff about what happened in the other ones. The other one thing i one dimension is that we've talked a lot about stephen king's relationship to class and this book has some mike big swings here. This is probably stephen king's like most i don't know white trash exploitation. You know is maybe the best way of putting it right. You know he. Poverty porton the one that really stuck out to me. You know 'cause he's trying to give this this kind of picture of rural maine. Not just as like the pace. The place of wholesome farmers like alva- right but of like moral decay decrepit to ride the place where people don't see you know for stephen king. The countryside is a little bit like you know the basement or of the overlook writer the boiler room. It's a place where things are always going to be happening that her nightmare should hidden. And you know so pervy murdering killing himself with alcohol out here the cambridge domestic abuse happening out here legally at the end of a dead end roads. And you can't go. Further out and clone dump. The dump used to be at the end of the road. Yeah the dump used to be there But but this is the one that really hit me. This is someone that you six of my page The writing about driving out there right and it talking about the road..

"And it's a soap opera with a With some gross stuff stapled onto it in them with a with a truly horrifying back third or so stapled onto it. And it's all of stephen king's We talked about with danse macabre when you've got nothing else to go for the gross out and it goes through the gross out and stephen king. Is you know. I think it's macabre very helpful for us in very helpful for me to understand this novel that i think the worst parts of this novel are when he goes for the gross-out because stephen king's gross out is now fully a social gross out. Stephen king is telling you what kinds of people it's okay not to like And it showed he. He is using human beings as monsters here which already done a bunch of times right but the way that that takes shape. Gosh what's the the stephen king. Standing here steve. Kemp steve kemp here is a one dimensional human monster like one hundred percent and he's he's bad he's just awful. These bad human being. And i don't think we're supposed to read this novel and be like dang. I wonder what steve. Kim's perspective is on this right but maybe we should do the summary before for we. I was gonna say yeah. We should if we're going to dig into these characters. We should probably turn over to you. The five seconds summary..

Michael does she think it's weird. That a large part of the novel that we're reading for this month cujo Don't you think it's weird that a large part of it revolves around someone winning the lottery. It's so i think yes you can say it's weird but actually i think it is perfectly of a piece with this book and what this book is sort of interested in in in kind of a big sense I think it's kind of The the lottery winning in this book is almost hokey. And i think that's kind of the point right like this book go so hard for like the melodrama that we've talked about throughout this show that a character just like conveniently winning the lottery feels just perfectly of a piece with everything surely jackson's the lottery. Well you know. Ironically this works out much better for the character who wins here. Assure you know what. And that's probably the only accurate incorrect use of the word iron eve. It's ever happened on a podcast. Oh cujo michael Read this thing before him. I don't know when i mean we. It wouldn't have been an early king book right. This would have been. I started reading. Stephen king again like in my tweens or early teens and then kind of spent my teenage years like working through it all. I was not reading them in publication order as we are doing here but at some point at some point i read cujo and I'll admit it didn't make much of an impression on me. Iron cujo pretty early. It had to be in the first ten or so. I know i read it before. Any of the other books like from the eighties. I probably read the dark tower books that existed at the time. Wow i'm on lake. So i take the wikipedia. It was sparse. I checked the wikki. It was sparser. Yup it was worse. Oh my god you weren't kidding. Yeah it's because the vast majority of king fans are older and don't dude. Are you know which you know. I guess it's fair. I don't fucking do it either now. I'm on good. Reads trying to see if anyone mentioned. I'm ninety percent. Sure his name is bill. I'm the other thing before we just shoot ourselves. Further in the foot here is i. Actually the other day loves buttons. Omnia was that it also be. Yeah are you. Flew like helen. The principal character. Who you know in her story. You know the they intact. The story was her husband. He and she fled to a women's shelter. And it's this kind of slow realization. That ralph has at like oh. Helen is no longer going to be looking for men. And especially because there's that other character from the women's shelter. I can't remember her name either but there is some tricky bits in there were just like. Oh yeah. she's a lesbian and she's clearly like the man heating guy like that of noxious but it's just close enough you're sitting. You're the the thing that's hard about. Stephen king is that he doesn't he doesn't pull punches from his characters. If his character would think or say something problematic. Stephen king does not stop them from doing so as a writer which is tricky. Because then you you run into wall. Are you encouraging this behavior. Because it's coming from the protagonists etc etc. I also does a character in the dark tower. That is we need to gush about a bad guy random. So yes we we will talk about my fave and yours callahan. But i wanna talk real briefly about what i think is ultimately my king representation which is like a random tie. Heen like just dude who is killed in thirteen. Yeah is like just like a dude. He basically in work you know. He's kind of a different species doesn't he needs a marie. So here's a furry. I'm i'm talking about in absolute minute character. I don't think he has a name. "Is a dividing tactic. So let's talk about queer history in relationship to stephen king. I do wanna like make sure that we keep bringing it back to king yes. Stephen king has been writing long enough that the culture around queasiness has shifted dramatically like really really significantly over time and you can see it shakeout in his writing. Yeah starting with kerry kerry is an interesting book to me. Because i think there's a really you could read kerry white as queer varies oi. You could one hundred percent. A generous reader kerry can take some of the body. You focus in the writing. That king has that people often read as horny grossman thinking about naked high scores which is unfortunately not a read out of the realm of possibility gauge in the state of things. Yeah but carries obsession with her body and lack of understanding of what it does and interest in other young women's bodies reads as really really queer to those of us who were not thinking of cleaners has an option when we grew up. So i remember starting sports in high school and thinking that i just had an academic interest in other men. Would i would tell my friends like man like. Did you see that guys. But and they'd be like. I wasn't looking at his but and i was like. Yeah me neither i wouldn't. That's not where. I was looking at all Man you tie that to the religious extremism that tortures her and her outsider status and already aah kerry we get fertile fertile ground for a queer. Read mcqueen queer interest in stephen king. Yeah it ain't smooth sailing though. It is not I'm going to be very honest. Even my cat has been door driving. You seen so i'm running. I've been listening i've been. I've been running around the laser pointer to get her to. That's and so. I haven't had the chance to percolate my own thought. That's fine i again. I'm coming at this from more of a gender identity angle. Sure i've mentioned this to you. Before is that. I read fire-starter when i was probably a little bit young to read fire starter. Get rid of when. I was like ten or eleven. The i wasn't even thinking about trying to shit yet. Like like i was who. I was in my tiny little child body and i think i mentioned this. It's really not like a significant chunk of the book but it's the part like stuck out to me because at that time. Are you definitely main. Queer thing i had seen. My young huge was kinky boots. Amazing referring to for we continue forward. Oh i'm so sorry. So there's a scene in firestarter with one of the characters again like my memory of the is actually quite sparse. I believe the detectives or police officer characters appreciate he dies he puts on his wife's clothes and then shoves his hand down a garbage. This oh that's right. Yes so there is a some sort of shadowy government authority figure who is psychically influenced to commit suicide by.

That king wants it to be taken your so. I'm trying to learn something right. I want to be a horror author. What is a horror author. What do they do And he gets to this chapter on ray bradbury and this is where he decides to like swerve out and he's like to in order for me to tell you about ray bradbury and something wicked this way comes. I need to tell you about feodor. Dreicer and sherwood anderson The reason that these authors are all connected is that they're from the mid west and blah blah blah blah blah. But then he has this line. He says he connects dreicer in bradberry by saying that They are both naturalists but bradberry turns to fantasy whereas a theater dreicer is all about social critique. Here is the thing cameron. Here's the thing that michael new at age thirteen. That stephen king didn't know in nineteen eighty eight. Like he's like thirty three or something Ray bradbury wasn't a naturalist. Naturalism is realism. It's just straight up wrong. That's not how literary history works like. I was the kid in my english classes. When they taught us like the big sort of like literary movements like gotha schism and romanticism and stuff. I loved that. I ate that up. So i one of my. I kind of like ways of apprehending. Literature was about a learning This kind of history and kind of the taxonomy that develop and how those work. And so i'm reading here as you know little teenage michael. And he says ray bradbury is a naturalist and it's like no zola is a naturalist. What the hell are you talking about like ray. Bradbury is writing about ghosts in rocket ships. That's just wrong agreed. Ously wrong even better that ghosts and rocket ships in the same stories right lake. I guess natural literally. The man moves the house of other to mars..

"Oh he said to himself as the three others he had been shooting the eight ball with ran out. Oh me count me out. The others could not run there or the others can run over there. Like hounds on hunt sent if they wanted to. They had not been at the manders farm. They had not seen this particular third grader in action. What jose j. wanted more than anything at that. Point in time was to find a deep hole in poland over him and like you know this kind of brilliant stephen king touch of like there's there. There is a third grader running around blowing people up in like melting their bones. And there's a character who knows all about that it does not want to be involved and yet does get involved and it's just kind of like you know this perspective of dread. That's about to happen. Stephen king i think one of the things. He's going to get so much better at during the nineteen eighties is like the pacing of dread. Which he he's experimented with quite a bit You know the shining talked about how so much of that is kind of dependent on this kind of pacing of. Oh no what's about to happen but he really leans on that in in these novels in the eighties. And i think he gets better at it across the board. Well that's great. I really like that the oj character as well and yeah. I love him having that moment of being able to just be like to be a person in this world. He's the only person who seems to be. Just dude dude his job and he's like evil because he's part of the shop but he's got like a normal dude's perspective on things Well speaking of the shop That takes us right into what in the king of verse. Which is the segment where we run through Any connections to the world's steven king his other novels That we may notice. If you're not a stephen king reader this is because many of his novels are interconnected in sometimes direct and sometimes indirect ways of the shop which we talked about extensively Shows up again. It will show up again It is a kind of i. Don't think we will i. I can't say too much because 'cause he's written books that i haven't read. We don't get anything that goes directly to the shop but the shop will show up in the background of A couple of other novels. I someone no-one correct me. This is just between michael. And i so do not let me know if this is true. I believe his more recent novel. The institute is actually about the shop. So that's why. I had said i don't hold me to this because i was. I was getting ready to say. I don't think we get another like direct shop novel. But then remembered he just put out the institute and it sounds an awful lot like that could be the shop like. I don't know if he would necessarily make that. But you know it it would be unsurprising and i would not be disappointed because we find out. At the end of the novel. We get a little a short chapter with the shops new director. Who's a woman. So no glass ceiling broken by a fireball. Ma so we know that the shop continues on and is still going so Yeah weirdly enough as a as a thing that that figures in were also well. We'll we'll come back against weird that this is the thing that just doesn't really show up all that many more times when it really could in different ways When i noticed that i put on here is that the doctor who experiments on charlie is named patrick hochstetter. Yup who is a completely unrelated teenager in it No relation yup. It's just another character named patrick hochstetter. Yeah it's really weird..

It's better that they're on fire than i don't know me. Suddenly thinking all of my issues are snakes or something. I would never do that to you. That's maury really thought about stealing all your change of your machines. Yeah it would be rude to only steal it from your payphone. I would steal it from your You know little debbie machine that you have work. I always steal it from your the little thing where you can get a little you see like in the mall and you sit in a vibrating chair like a massage chair. He put quarters into that. I would of course you all the quarters from your arcade machines. But i thought it was a little bit more polite to such phenol. Fire well if it helps. I deserved it. Because i was on a very angry call with my girlfriend and i was being a misogynist describing a various incidents that happened in the nineteen eighty. Novel fire starter. Yoke it's what we're going to be talking about today. And i didn't know cameron if you wanted to say something a special about this because i think in our first episode you said this might have been the first king book read and i don't know if you had any memories of that or i'm pretty confident it is..

"I'm very franchised But but Yeah i don't. I i think he has. Since that token is like the logical project talking was involved in creating this unified mythology or this fictionalized mythology that that talks about the kind of or history of of england. And all that kind of stuff. I think he has a sense of that. But i don't think that He's thought about it much more than that The the other thing. I guess it's worth saying here at the top two is that this is i. I mean correct me if i'm wrong. This is the. But i believe this is the novel that like makes stephen king stephen king Like all of his other novels have been successful but this is a novel that each breaks him into the highest cheer. I don't know because none of the stuff that i have read has suggested that but i will say this is nineteen seventy eight. The carey movie is just getting ready to come out. It is the right timing right like carries gonna come out next year. This is his most recent novel Gotcha like a lot of people are going to be introduced to him through carey and if they're going to go to the bookstore and pick up the most recent stephen king the stand is what they're gonna get. Yes so so. Maybe maybe it's less about this new novel specifically more about like a confluence of factors In having a pretty solid. I mean as we've discussed on the show are pretty solid backlog. At this point i mean you. You're not going to. You're you're not going to be able to read rage right like you would not even king if you did. Read it and so Any stephen king book you pick up Win kerry comes out. You're going to be probably happy women. And i should say also i think i think to some extent right. Maybe the stand does help with making stephen king stephen king Because if you pick up the if you haven't heard of the sky in its nineteen seventy nine and you pick this book up off the shelf. It is kind of unlike anything else that you're going to be likely to pick up in your in your local five and dime a one hundred percent and i think that has to do with genre. I think finally we can. We can actually talk about the the plot of the novel But i think it has to do with shauna. And i've weirdly enough become like a big genre person now that we've been reading these Stephen king books Because something that shared between your experience in my experience is that when i was growing up The only people that i knew who read stephen king or me or my friends who is the same age and we will get it from the library in. Everyone's mom like. I'd i'd not know until i was an adult right. I never met an adult man. Who had read a stephen king novel It was all adult women. And i think that actually has something to do with stephen king. Genre I maybe i i don't i don't think he's writing for women necessarily but i think that.

But Joe had no idea they headed to a flea market and suddenly one of the other stagehands rooms up to me and says Joe needs you right now made it sound like a big emergency so I get dragged over to this this trailer where there's a bunch of animals in and Joe says I know how we can save the show. Oh what are we going to do? We just need to get one of these sheep next Joe into a Halloween store and came back with a bunch of orange and black spray paint and he explained that. We're just gonNA paint this sheep and he thinks that from a considerable distance. No one's going to know that it's not a tiger. So he puts the sheep in a box just to help keep a corralled spray painted orange and then gives a couple of really basic easy stripes with just some quick dashes of the of the black. Can they loaded the tiger striped sheep into the cage and ran the rehearsal again but when the explosion went off the sheep also got spooked then it became apparent that someone is going to have to be in the prop to make sure that people can see the quote unquote tiger. Joe Picked Aaron. So there I am hiding in a secret compartment hugging painted sheep. Pyro goes off. Track door opens there. I am in a suit hugging this terrified. Fuzzy creature and there wasn't really applause in the crowd. There was a quick. Ooh because pyro but then a bunch of confusion.
