"I it's not a perfect comparison I guess I'm just trying to figure out What can eighties experience? Be Tell us or inform our understanding of of Kevin Durant experience where Katie go wrong in this. You know if eighty is able to pull this off and people generally decide that they like him or they don't turn them into this villain who just chased a ring and Road Lebron's coat tails or whatever the stuff people might want to say once they get there if everyone sort of accepts at the Davis is like, yeah, you know the NBA. Game is a little bit You know a stacked deck against the small markets. He understood he was just very pragmatic and how he approached his career he he was loyal as long as he possibly could he made the right call and it paid off with the title if everyone's just like ready to just hug the UNI brow and say great job buddy I feel like if I was Kevin Durant, I would be outraged by that. Okay. This is a I. think this might be a too obvious of appoint to make but I think critical one. With Kevin Durant. The warriors didn't quote. Unquote. Need Kevin Durant to win the championship he was. Like excess. Just something that would put them over the top historically, that would just make them completely unguardable, but we know that. They probably should have one in two, thousand sixteen if hundred doesn't puch. Lebron. They won seventy three games that year a record they won the title the previous year they had the best player in the world the two time. MVP. Was Steph Curry. They were just an incredible juggernaut so they didn't need Kevin Durant the Lakers on the other hand and I think this is maybe what is reflected by your reaction to eighty s three point buzzer beater. The Lakers absolutely need Anthony Davis, and they need them to play an extremely high level to actually win the championship this season. So if he doesn't play very well, they have no chance in my opinion even with a two games to nothing lead against Denver Nuggets because this team is very thin at the end of the day and going back to who that third best player is conversation at the end of the day like these are their veteran role players and that's wonderful and they fit really well. Around Lebron ad but it it it just all falls apart. If Eighty has a bad game that's not like they're not going to win unless he excels and he's been so excellent in this postseason to earn the the applause and to be celebrated as he has his production has been through the roof on both ends and he's been great long. so He's more of an integral piece in kind of getting L. A. over the hump. Then I think k. d. ever was with the warriors. Does that makes sense? I mean Katie was. Central in making the warriors basically unbeatable right which is less flush different qualify. Yeah. Fun for the casual. Fan. And maybe that's where he turned people off whereas you know it's still was a competitive game there late for sure if he doesn't hit that shot the whole series dynamic changes at least temporarily. So I definitely hear your points I just think it's fascinating if I was Katie I would sit back if Anthony Davis winds up kind of winning over hearts and minds when he claims his title after bailing on the Pelicans with the midseason trade request that totally tank their season and Basically saying like there was only team I want one team I wanted to go to and it's the Lakers and its teaming up with Lebron and he winds up you know everybody just decides you know what a d you deserve..

Brooklyn Nets Hire Steve Nash As Head Coach

"We are here. On the heels of a big announcement. Yeah. Steve Nash Future Hall of Famer. Future Hall. Of famer is the coach new coach of the Brooklyn Nets. What's going on listen I? Think it's it's it's a good. It's a good pairing with him and Katie. You know as well as anybody that there was a pre existing relationship Steve was a player development consultant for Golden State. He spent a Lotta time with Kevin Durant is I would talk to him over the years about his experiences. In golden state like not just learning from Steve Kerr and those guys who specifically he was working within. Golden State and it always Katie was always you know like one of the names that he said a lot what I thought he'd be working with the guard so that relationship and then you sean marks played with him in Phoenix. So there's a real. There's a real respect there as well. So I think it made a lot of sense.

"In a little bit bland at times but he's also not hateful in a way where some people found it really as easy to root against Kevin Durant into kind of hate him for his decision. So I don't know if he's going to catch as much as Kevin Durant, but I just wonder should we be bracing for it? I guess is my question I. Think we had much different history with Kevin Durant. Before he made that decision, you know he's the league MVP. He's a what is it for time scoring champion maybe more than I dunno correct for yeah. Four Times scoring champion There was just so many battles in the playoffs that he had. He had already reached the finals with harden and Westbrook, and then we all know what happened after that. So I think the the story with Kevin Durant is just so much different than Anthony Davis where we just don't have the same type of relationship with him and it kind of felt like you know as as a die hard basketball and you WANNA see Kevin Kevin Durant kind of see it through with the thunder and to rise up and be great despite the obstacles that were. kind of out of his control in terms of being in a small market having Russell Westbrook as your. As your your sidekick really even Russell Westbrook doesn't even view himself as a sidekick and having to traverse all of that would have been more impressive. I think in the eyes of a lot of people and maybe even objectively more impressive than joining the Golden. State. Warriors and winning the titles the way he did. But I will say that shot that he hit in two thousand seventeen. Over Lebron. is just a it's like not even comparable in my opinion to the ad shot at it didn't even cross my mind when I saw eighty shock. Oh, and maybe that's just because. Of, the fact that again, it's game two of the Western Conference finals and again, we don't have the same type of back story the same emotional connection with ad that we did with Kevin Durant. So I don't really think these two are that comparible and also think that there's just no juggernaut now and again like. You picked a different team to win at all so. We can't kind of go back and then say we knew all along that the Lakers were going to dominate because I, say, I'm not saying that for myself I'm just trying to forecast how the masses basically I feel burned by everybody not really being excited for Kevin Durant and like you know he goes up in goes the championship parade and there's all these jokes. You know it's kind of steps team and Steph can have whatever contract he wants and Katie's looking around like wait a minute. I've been working nine years for this right like on show me some Lovin. He's even said how unfulfilled he felt that summer after winning it because he thought it would feel better I don't get the sense that that's going to be Anthony. Davis. Reaction to his first title I. Think He's GonNa feel very, very happy and feel completely validated that he made the right decision by going to L..

Brooklyn Nets hire Hall of Famer Steve Nash as head coach

"Welcome to the low post podcast where the plan was to talk hilariously awful game sevens and DEFCON. In Milwaukee with the one and only Kevin Arnovitz but Mr Kevin Arnovitz about five minutes ago news dropped from the news gods on Mount Olympus of Basketball Steve Nash Steve Freaking, Nash, two time. NBA Mvp. The point God of the seven seconds less Phoenix Suns will become the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. This is I think the first one since Brad, Stevens to Boston were like the news came although that came via a press release the celtics that one themselves where the news came like an earthquake with absolutely no warning no rumors know anything all the rumors moghreb Popovich a note, Steve Nash. So Steve Nash Has Minimal coaching experiences consulted team Canada. I'm not sure again this just happened I haven't looked up his exact role, a team Canada he was a consultant with the Golden State, warriors GM. You might have been the GM GM Canada. You're right. And I think clearly relevant in his consultation with the Golden State. Warriors developed a close relationship with Kevin Durant and I and they worked together in the off season a lot on various aspects of Katie's game in I interviewed. Steve Two years ago. About Kevin I wrote a big piece in the two thousand eighteen finals or so anti climactic that my big final piece was not about the finals at all it was about like what is Kevin Durant WanNa be as a basketball player like what is Kevin Durant? You Know Kevin Durant and his entire career has been. You could argue who was the quote best player on the team with the warriors not with the thunder he was clearly the best player on the thunder team but was never the lead ball handler of his team. So I wrote this sort of like, what is Kevin Durant and Steve Talk to me in depth about their relationship and about how after the warriors won the first title he and Kevin would talk about how Kevin did not fill fulfilled by. Winning that title in the way that he expected that it did not give him the fulfillment that he expected all this. So I, think that's obviously A big reason why Kevin by Steve Nash is now the coach of the nets. I mean the nets have lots of stuff to not figure out they have to superstars coming back carousel avert head. As you know like a superstar scoring run I guess in the bubble they gotTA figure out fits those guys I mean, what's your? What's this just happened? What do you think what's happening? So, one way to look at this is what is the head coach's role in two thousand and twenty, twenty one and to a great extent. Especially when you have talent like durant irving, you're in the talent management business, you're in the business of men managing relationships, empowering players the right way. Their XS and os no. By the way if there's anybody who's the personification of modern basketball, it's this guy or like everything you and I talk about every single time I'm on can in some ways be traced back to that son's team. So you're talking about a guy with an enormous. Basketball IQ and by all accounts and emotional IQ as well. So. So, that that is the case sport that that look that is the primary responsibility of the New Jersey Nets. Can you listen to me Brooklyn Nets had could they're

"Was like holy dump passing the ball like I, want I want no part of even shooting three with this guy coming happy and he's been doing that all year he did not do that in Cleveland he did not by indefensibly in Cleveland two point in the fourth runs in Cleveland. And the look when I was doing defensive player of the year and all defense stuff you know one of the things I do is I is I asked tons of people for their opinions, players, coaches, GM's etc I also as analytics guys around the league what is your secret stuff? Tell me about who the best forwards are whatever. A few of them came back and said, you know you might surprise you but our. Ranks Lebron is the best defender on the Lakers did not Anthony Davis to be that didn't pass my pass by test because it I've Seen Lebron play defense. He's been amazing I thought Davis was still better but the fact that there was via systems around the league spitting this out I think that's the other big issue or the other big story line is at the Lakers have bought in front. They wanted what Lebron Bison from day one, it's Lebron James Everybody has to buy. There is no tolerance for dispassionate defense from anyone in we have seen the payoff for that in the playoffs they have been outstanding defensively the against good offensive teams. I mean. You're not going to hold them to like bottom five level points per possession, but you're gonNA, hold him to good enough that you can win and they've done that. There was a possession last night. I think it was the fourth quarter. Maybe I'm not been earlier. Anthony Davis snuffed out to Jamal Murray. Attempts or on Jamal Murray and forced them to go the ball twice in the same possession. Out on the perimeter. Anthony. Davis it was like a little fast fish signed swim around and octopus and the octopus be like Nope I'm over here over here. No, I got eight arms and they're really logging gay bisexual fish. You think you're you're had a great postseason fish you gotta work your Clutch Fish. But you can buy me. Insane shouldn't be possible. Speaks to why Anthony Davis is such a great defender and. You know it's funny. We we forgotten the fact that every Bradley is not there. Every Bradley who was supposed to be one of their key backward defenders and every series I've kind of tried to throw that out there as the clever kind of well is this going to be the series where they Miss Avery Bradley? Well No. Apparently apparently, they're not going to miss every Bradley. No matter what backward facing whether it's the blazers, the rockets Jamal, Murray. I wonder about this too though. So for the last several years here, we've had this like very you know Unicorn Small Forward Driven League, right? It's quite Leonard. It's Kevin Durant. Lebron Lebron's that having to face any of those guys and I wonder if like at least some of this, Lebron whether it's defensively or was just the energy he has for offense like the broad hasn't had to deal with. Some of the big time assignments that he's had in some of the past postseasons because he's not getting Paul George. Kevin Durant obviously not a factor the season. and. Michael Porter Jr., and Jeremy Grant or not exactly guys are going to be testing the at least at the position. Right? Lebron does much more than just guard as position. Well, looming in the next round should the Lakers advanced and I say shook the Lakers advanced I mean it because I am done assuming that the dug out of a series until the final buzzer goes off in Yoga is on the flight back to Serbia for some to bobby. Is Jimmy Butler and her good in. US It's IT'S A it's it's heaven. It's Jimmy Butler Jason. TATUM and Lebron figures to get some time on both of those guys. One of those guys if. If the Lakers events. Yes and none of us are going to sleep on the nuggets ever ever ever ever again. I tell you if you don't Wanna get called out by Jamal Murray, you don't want it to happen to you. Know certainly not by the way, one of the things about the nuggets that I think is a lot of fun and. Just. On the Yokich side of it major mammaries had a phenomenal kind of coming out party and his postseason how I did a feature on. Yokich. A couple of years ago when they made me. Very. Angry because you got all the good yogurt stories and there was. There was none left for any of us. There was one about him eating ice cream from like a barrel of ice cream that may be Perry. Tim Connolly was phenomenal for that story and Yokich was great. So at that time I remember talking to Mike Malone for like a half hour on one of their off days I was out there for a few days in one of the things about his team like was he was really nice team. It's a really nice bunch of guys. Everybody's about the right things. And they're all they get along well, and they got the right values as players but it was almost like too nice and part of that not just whether they needed some nasty as pop would say but also like Yokich was like this emerging star who was this kind of very sheepish about his stardom, right? Yokich like his English was still coming along at that time. He was you know obviously still a bit of puffier version of Nikola Jokic but he also there was no assertiveness about him. There was this a playmaker but not as a score. and. Now you're seeing them go to town on guys and you're seeing them like go right into eighties body last night in I think me you know I'm sure this has been written somewhere but I feel like it has not gotten enough notice maybe just it's it's been more gradual than that. That Yokich, I just feel like looks like a much more assertive star when we talk about one of the reasons I, think that he he doesn't get enough. RUN FOR FOR MVP or other. You know awards whatever the last couple of years is that he doesn't strike us as the typical Alpha dog wants to tear your heart out. Kind of store the numbers are there the winner there? But there's something else missing that he doesn't fit that archetype rest arrested the but but right now, like look look at the way, he's going that guys and I I feel like that part of it has emerged regular season Yokich averages twenty points game. Playoff. Yokich is averaging twenty six points a game without sacrificing any other parts of his game. I said last week on this podcast. He is the true everyone is compared to. Since he came into the League for obvious reasons to to me yoga choose the true heir Dirk Nowitzki as the greatest crunch time scoring big man of his era guy. You can hurt you from every place on the court has is obviously a much better. Yokich is guy there just hasn't been a guy like this but in terms of big man score that you can give the ball to all over the court in crunch time you makes you pay he's he's the true heir to Dirk. I think were we've talked about Last. Week is in the books. Now it's time to review the tape prepare for this week. There is no better.

"kevin durant" Discussed on The Lead

"So we all know the story of how Kevin Durant's career at the warriors came to an end to the way in Durant Greco's down holding his leg. He goes up and down the other end and durant grabbing right leg breaking news on. Cbs sports aid skew. It has been confirmed by Kevin. Durant himself a ruptured Achilles. Tendon has already undergone surgery. How do you think all of that? Impacted his legacy with Golden State and with the team's fans. I think it made the relationship with the fans a little bit better than it would have been otherwise because not only did he win championships for them. He put his body on the line and he suffered. He suffered trying to win something for them. And so that softens the blow of this acrimonious break up and I don't think he's thank the fans are he didn't win. He laughed and has done some things that might have resulted in a bit of a backlash. But it's hard to have that backlash if a guy ruptured his Achilles tendon. Coming back. Maybe too soon to try to get you your feel-good and try to get you that championship. So in a way in that moment I think it was the conservation of his Faustian bargain where he became beloved by the warriors fans but it cost him dearly looking forward to whenever the NBA does resume. Kevin Durant is of course now in Brooklyn and paired up with Kyrie Irving And those are two guys with very strong personalities who both like to be the top dog on their team knowing as much as you do about Kevin Durant. How do you anticipate that relationship and that team working out? Since so many people think it's going to go horribly a most wondering. Is this a situation? Where because we're so unanimous in predicting disaster? It's actually going to work out. Well I don't know all tend to go the conventional wisdom. It seems quite precarious. It seems precarious to combine those two in that situation with an organization that I'm sure is competent. I'm sure there are people within who do a good job at not exactly. Salt Lake Yovany Pat Riley type people running things and that organization. It's not like you have a track record of established glory were. You can tell somebody that you gotta fall in line For the sake of the Brooklyn Nets it seems like a shell That the two of them are running and they're both vol's hold their own ways and they're prone to Moody nist and you wonder about their surrounding talent. And so I guess I would say it's precarious and the smart money would be on it and dean not so happily and lastly Ethan. What will it take for? Kevin Durant to be satisfied Well I think initially the ultimate validation from everybody in the culture that he's the best player on the planet at least would temporarily do that but other than that. I mean. That's that's beyond my pay grade. That's not something I could figure out As to what happens after that moment ads. Well even thanks so much for coming on the show. It's my pleasure. Draymond Green compares Warriors to 'The Last Dance' Bulls, says Kevin Durant was 'elephant in the room'

"You Draymond green check out the last dance and like you he's got thoughts Draymond facts as he sees a lot of similarities between the bulls and the warriors for instance the so called elephant in the room the boys often wise and that was their last year together except everybody knew about that elephant golden state's offense was Kevin Durant according to drain money often being what was the ramp going to do at the end of the year nobody knew because Katie wouldn't say and dram on seem to take issue with that because he has teammates had to answer the question because the route would not I could see were dram I would be unhappy about that well don't Randy need to say exactly what he was going to do what he should have done was sad I don't want to talk about this ask me again at the end of the year but not before I don't ask my teammates and my coaches either there's a right way and a wrong way to handle that and I grew a drain monitor rand handle that

How the Warriors stack up against Jordan's Bulls

"Everybody in the free world. Watch the last dance the other night. It appears Draymond. Green did too and draymond green went on a podcast yesterday. uninterrupted W RT s after. Show party with Paul Rivera and Maverick Carter. No less And he likened their last season with Kevin Durant the warriors to what he had just watched on. Tv with the last season of the Bulls and he didn't hold back and he said one of the things from watching it. Was that what you saw? Is everybody kind of set it up like this is going to be the last year and so there was none of that elephant in the room hanging out there for their team That last warriors team with Durant and said that you know. Steve tried to deal with it but Kevin was asked about it every day. Dream on saying I want to be a warrior for Life Klay say and I want to be a warrior for life and then there was this elephant in the room the entire year and it was almost as if he watched the last dance and thought Jeez They handled that a lot. Better like hanging out there the whole year. Everybody knew that was going to be the end and so they just treated it that way the whole year. What you guys think. I mean ownership didn't handle it better. The player of the players may have the players may have handled it at worst. And Scottie Pippen you know getting the surgery when he did wanting out you know Jordan thinking was selfish but ownership on the warriors side of things. At least their goal is building with sustainability. They WANNA keep steph curry and Klay Thompson and continue winning. Reisen Dorf in Krause and the Bulls were ready to pull the plug after the first three championships. Trying to trade pippen for camp granted that still a win but then after it it's about China. Tear Down Arriba. I don't see that from the warriors now but it is fascinating. How much history has repeated in some ways with the disease of more and whatnot that manifested with Katie? Always being jealous of steph curry in the spotlight that he received and you look at what the Bulls went through in the nineties. I it is hard to see the parallels from the players side. We think I didn't see it. I just think Jerry mind was a I think he was a little narcissistic with it is totally different situation. Durant in that situation is basically the Rodman character. Rodman was on the Bulls for three years. Durant shows up for three years pushes him to another level but other I mean the bulls thing was so different Jordan and pippen were together for you know twelve years and there were Phil Jackson for. I don't know it was at least nine or whatever and everything was the same and they were just going going going and they had all these different ups and downs and that warriors thing you know they durant was on that team for blip was if you add up when when he actually showed up and then when he left. It's less than three years. It's like thirty months It's not a perfect comparable for for either team. But I do think you know the players you know seeking that attention. Wanting what's there's at I think with that aspect there's some similarities but overall though I mean I'm with you in the sense that ownership in front office objectives here are far different in what the Bulls wanted to do in the nineties with Crowson. Reisen Dorf is far different than what the warriors are trying to do with Myers and and warriors ownership. Now right I mean the differences with the warriors thing. It was one person undermining the whole thing. Durant yeah the Bulls thing it was. It was like a bad marriage with you. Know eight nine different people. All knowing like the marriage is ending and I think with the warriors they kept trying to pull durant back in that second season when he was there was when it started to fall apart in the third season. I still feel like they felt like it might be salvageable until they had that clippers game and then after that I think there are some similarities with the chemistry. Let's say let's say this. Let's say draymond. His way would have played out the way he wanted to write like. I don't buy for one second. If Kevin Durant started that season said this is my last year with the warriors it still would have been a problem like the right here the whole year by the way. He should have done that though. That's how he should have handled it and I think part of the problem is he didn't handle it that way. And you know the players and the team new organization. They knew he was leaving. They knew about all the New York stuff they thought it was gonna be the Knicks but they knew he was leaving. It was by especially by February march ever in the league new so I think from that standpoint underminded what's the elephant in the room. That draymond talking about that. You know what I'm saying if they all had this understanding Kevin. Ain't going to be with US after this year. Then why is he acting like it was a problem throughout the entire year? That Kevin was just saying Oh. I don't know we'll see we'll because I think Kevin probably agree with this. I think there was still hope that he might do a one eighty. You know I I think that. And honestly with the with the ninety eight balls and you're gonNA find out in the tenth part it came a lot closer to everybody coming back except for Rodman I I think they knew Rodman was done but I think once they actually won. I think there was a moment there where they were like Holy Shit. What are we doing? We gotTA defend this again.

Ram's Brian Allen first NFL player known to have COVID-19

"Ram center Brian Allen who last year started about half the season before he suffered a season ending knee injury is revealed to be the first active player in the NFL to have tested positive for corona virus now he told Fox Sports on Wednesday and then in the wake of that Sean McVay did an interview with Jay Glazer on Fox Sports where he talked about finding out that right Allen who admitted the facilities working to rehab from his knee injury finding out that Allen I had tested positive in that he was feeling symptoms and so you can imagine for a head coach at general manager as well you're trying to protect your player and protect his privacy me think about the NBA there were some athletes who chose to reveal that they had corona virus let's see Kevin Durant was among the the four nets who who contracted it and he revealed himself but the other nets did not Donovan Mitchell shared that he had from the Utah Jazz we'd know that job market smart of the Celtics also indicated that he had it but there were others the Lakers never did reveal that you guys who they say tested positive for corona virus with it it's a personal decision and it's private and you can imagine that there are some people out there who don't want their names to be released and so the rams had a kind of tiptoed around this and been really careful not to answer any questions directly about covert nineteen but once Brian Allen it revealed that he had tested positive that he had been feeling symptoms then his head coach Sean McVay also spoke to Fox Sports one think the first thing was number one you just want to make sure that you're doing all the necessary steps are you know identify okay how are you feeling health wise and then are we making sure that everybody else is aware of what he's been exposed to and you know the thing is I talked to him yesterday as well I'm really glad to hear that he's feeling good he's healthy and he's not he's on the road to recovery because I think we all understand that then you know the severity of what this is meant for some people fortunately for Brian he's on the road to recovery I think you did a great job of letting us know right away so we could be timely in our response and making sure that you know we didn't expose anybody else for that and that's a real credit to Brian and Reggie Scott DC Batman and all the people that were involved and that's the most important part because of how contagious the virus can be it's important to let everybody else know that you have it you tested positive for it because it can get passed along and then they have a responsibility to their families as well as the people that they have been in contact with and that's kind of the scary part that's why it's it's so difficult to curb the spread of Infiniti's like new York's city or in the US cities like Detroit or Chicago or some of the others where there have been hot spots because you have to know in order to alert those people that you have been around it's hard sometimes to remember every single person you have you been in close contact with now in the case of Brian Allen he began to feel symptoms three weeks ago and you remembered the the NFL closed down its training facilities all of them officially but a lot of the facilities even before Roger Goodell and the owners agreed on how they would handle this moving forward you know there are a lot of facilities that were already operating on skeleton crew that didn't have a lot of people in them and so Allen was spending his offseason in Los Angeles and he was rehabbing his knee injury it started to feel the symptoms three weeks ago and so he alerted the team of course and he indicated that he was having it you know some slight symptoms so one of one of the sets of symptoms includes losing your sense of smell and taste in addition to some of the others that are more widely reported fatigue headaches he said he had a sore throat as well and so he he felt those symptoms he told the I. team and the facilities were completely locked out they were cleaned and everybody that he had been in contact with was alerted so now it's been a few weeks he's expected to be cleared of the virus this week which is good news that he's not a high risk type of an individual because he's young he's in his mid twenties he's in great health he's a professional athlete but you don't know who else he might have been in contact with and so you can imagine the rams were doing their due diligence and trying to make sure that they followed up in terms of the the community spread and John McVeigh get on Fox Sports is finally feeling like he can talk about this now what you want to make sure is alright if you had been there were not leaving anybody else susceptible to to some of the things as far as being able to catch you because it is actually spread airborne and and it can be a symptomatic were really you know you know kind of sneaks up on you if you will so we close the distillery's down for the last couple weeks they still represent being smart being safe as we can about it and being able to open up a store next week where those guys are on rehab programs only have the availability to get some of the treatment but we're gonna be real specific and segmenting it so that they're still the social distancing where guys are far apart and really break it up throughout the day because it's a really small group of guys J. so we're being as smart as down with our decision making you know while being able to kind of carry on as close as you can with with some of those three have

"kevin durant" Discussed on Slate's Hang Up and Listen

"Ethan Strauss's first year on the warriors. Beat was the year Steve. Kerr Steph Curry Klay Thompson. Draymond green and crew Harrison. Barnes won their first championship. He's covered the team every year since I re- SPN. After the athletic his new book the victory machine the making and unmaking of the Warriors Dynasty is about what the subtitle says. It's about There's a bit more emphasis on the UNMAKING. The central figure is Kevin Durant. Who came to the warriors in two thousand sixteen helped push them to two more titles than decamped for Brooklyn last year after getting hurt and Golden State's finals loss to Toronto of that injury in game? Five Ethan writes. This was the night of Kevin Durant's redemption and also the consummation of his Faustian bargain for years he'd wanted love and recognition from a Fan Base. That wanted to be the hero on June tenth. Twenty Nineteen Kevin. Durant was finally their hero. It just so happened to cost him his Achilles Tendon joining us now fully end then Sherwood stress congrats on the book. Thank you so much as a hell of a summary and I also agree. I think there's more focus on the unmaking because at least a literary perspective It seems that's what draws us when it comes to the NBA when it comes to the great teams. I mean you see a lot of excitement for this Jordan. Bulls documentary the last dance. David Halberstam's famous breaks of the game is about the Portland Trailblazers after they were successful. For whatever reason. I can throw in shacking Kobe as well That seems to what draws us when we look back it's the personalities white can't stay together Rather than the great basketball the rise perhaps because that's an easy to consume product in writing about. It's like dancing about architecture. Whatever metaphor. I'M GONNA start way up in the clouds kind of already there. I'm there I can join you there and reading the book it struck me that it's not about who what when where or even how not even how you've been it's about why and it's not about answering why it's about asking why and not knowing the answer in life. I think that's our most common state is asking and not knowing and one of the big wise with the warriors is about proper distribution of credit. Did they win? Because of Joe Lak- taking over from an owner. Who never won anything. Did they win because of staff did they win? Because Steve Kerr brought something new to the team and later did they win because if durant or could they have one without him. These are all questions. You kind of ponder in the book so why is it worth asking these questions? If it's impossible to know dancers. I mean that's very existential. I think I mean that's that's almost talmudic. Thank you as far as what is the? What is the point to when it comes to struggling with these answers and we don't know them to me? I just like to think about things and be as honest as I can. I think it would be a much easier book to package if it was like some of these sports books of a certain category and I'm not trying to slight them or insult them but they have a perspective where this is why success happened. This is the blueprint for success. Take this to your board meeting. This is what you can apply at your company We've seen genre that. Obviously moneyball is a great book beyond all of that. But that's a lot of the appeal. It's this Oh man I can find market inefficiencies. That's why billy being one. He found a market inefficiency and he found players. Other people didn't have it turns out. The truth is a lot more complicated there. And the reasons the as one Don't just redound to that. But it's a better story to package of you have one answer. Unfortunately when I looked into the question of how the hell this all happened. I didn't have one answer. There was a lot of luck involved. There was steph curry on this incredibly cheap contract when to MVP's and wild Joe Lak- taking over the ownership from Cohen made a tremendous amount of difference. Even there. It was a little abstract as to what the difference is. And what it means. And so Yeah I I wish that there were easy answers. I just didn't find easy. Answers looked into it. I thought it was interesting that you chose not to and I think this buttress as what you're saying you chose not to structure. This is sort of conventional sportsbook. It's not a chronological narrative. Written in some distant third person about how this great team came together and how it fell apart. It's much more organic in in the writing. It's much more essays in the writing and to the point of Dumb Luck. I mean what I what I love about the way you do. This is that you don't shy away. From these details. The fact that the new warriors ownership attempted to trade steph curry and Klay Thompson for Chris. Paul in twenty eleven the fact that the draymond green was selected in the second round after they had taken to other players before him. The fact. That Steve. Kerr wasn't necessarily the first choice to become the head coach of this team. I mean a lot of it is total dumb luck and the more we understand that total dumb lock with some you know residue of design to of quote branch rickey behind it is what makes teams successful or not is. What really is a play here? Yeah and it seems like the arrogance of Light Years Joe Lak- with his chest puffed out. It is so strong that if you brought these details to them into him their attitude would be. Yeah well we would have. We would have been great even despite this road fork were. We took the right path instead of the disastrous path. Yeah you know. We'd Gotten Chris Paul in that tray. We would have built a contender in a Titan with Chris Paul at the helm of it. I do think that's the perspective of it all. And maybe it's important to have some of that organizational arrogance but it is amazing when you look back on it. How much they're just wasn't there wasn't a plan in the way that you would think there was a plan and a lot of it was happenstance and a lot of it was dumb luck and I think we don't like that as human beings we we. We like to ascribe some sort of plan to the whole thing Injuries are like that too and teams have a bunch of injuries often. That happens because they're not doing a good job as far as training as far as knowing when to rest guys. But we don't look at that as probabilistic. We say that it's a freak injury. It's freak. It's out of nowhere who could have predicted it. We like to ascribe We often ascribed to lock the bad things. And some of the good things we ascribe to skill or two vision at some version of the successes. Many fathers failure is an orphan. I suppose so. The most common way that we connect players personalities to their on court personas is with the simple narrative of obsessive. Nass leads to greatness or with Michael Jordan obsessive slash psychosis leads to greatness and you saw that with Kobe Bryant as well with Kevin Durant the kind of obsessive nece they you document and has been documented amply by others over the last few years. It's a different kind of obsessive nece in one. That doesn't really seem to have a clear connection to why he's great as a player. Do you think that's fair? Not necessarily I think that obsessive nece does have a connection. I think the insecurity that we see permeate much of his public life has something to do with why he worked so hard to get where he got. And that's not the complete explanation but There elements to his biography. How peripatetic. It was and how this a source of comfort this grounds him in a way. It's a place where he has a lot of control the basketball court so I do think that there is something to his personality. That's that that has something to do with the greatness but it also seems like we don't like seeing all of it that we like an idea superficially of a story of obsession and how it connects with greatness will laugh at Michael Jordan having cheated at cards cheating and Old Lady at cards. And that's part of I e so competitive all my God Mike but when we actually get a full dose of the Michael Jordan Esa Michael Jordan. Let's say at the Basketball Hall of fame speech he gave we we we pull back we go. That's a little bit. Who is a little bit too close? We didn't want to see all of that. And it seems like Kevin Durant is very much that guy for this era. We're where we have so much access to athletes and what they're thinking that we see some of why he's great personality wise but it also makes a lot of people recoil or want to withhold the praise because the insecurity is so palpable. Even obviously Kevin Durant is a central character here and your relationship with him some a piece of this book in the conversation here. Can you talk a little bit about when it became apparent? Because there's a there's a guy that says durant is a different dude. All superstars a fucking crazy but like durant is a different dude. Like when was that most apparent to you in like your relationship with you. And you're like Oh this guy's not like dealing with all the other NBA stars. I've dealt man well. I heard. Obviously that is different dude going into it even talked to him a little bit about being different Dude But. I think it's just how he okay. I think one moment was. He was complaining about He was complaining about what some random twitter person was saying at him and I didn't know the random twitter person was initially made it sound like it was somebody with some clout or some following. But it turned out to be. I don't know thunder fans six one nine two right. It was just some random and Kris Haines reporter at Yahoo says the Katie. Were on the locker room. Man You're sensitive and and Aramco's yeah I am sensitive. What's wrong with that and it was just something. You typically hear the locker room. It was a very different thing to say and we didn't have anything to say back to them. In a way it's very that aspect is very healthy that he knows that he has a certain emotional range and isn't ashamed of it but it's not something you commonly see in the NBA and it's say the stuff better stuff really got under his skin right. Yes this stuff better stuff for people that don't know there is a contingent of warriors fans Andy and say that have talked about it started off you know sort of mocking Lebron fans. Maybe but then it seemed like it was weaponized in some ways but some other people that were not andy and Sam that stuff was more central to the warriors success than Katie. Is that a fair. Yeah rendering it. Yes so yeah. So that really got under his skin correct..

"Greg cosell and five minutes chris hanes sat down and with kevin durant long interview published yesterday. He'll be on the show today t._j. Cushman's on a final hour and jason mcintyre tomorrow's headlines today last ask segment of our show on thursday. I absolutely loved that so by the way before we get to christine forty-five minutes key sat down with kevin durant and kevin durant remember when kevin durant got hurt and then he came back in the finals. What was the first reaction by the n._b._a. Media the warriors fault. They pressured him. It's the doctors doctors. It's the training staff n._b._a. Media in my opinion hoddle's its players because stars run the league and none of the reporters wanna get ghosted by the top players so they suck up to them so in kevin durant got hurt even though he's a grown man on the immediate n._b._a. Media reaction is the warriors made him play doctors made him play in bad training staff and kevin durant yesterday dispelled all of that at non sense and came out and said hell. No the warriors pressured me in the getting back. Nobody ever said a word to me about rehab. When the series started. I targeted game five. Hell naw just happened. It's basketball man blank happens. Nobody was responsible for it so the entire narrative and that was the first reaction by the media that covers the n._b._a. Which is coddle baby. Protect the stars. This is why adam silver says our players are not happy. This is why therapists hell you don't over over complement your kid because when they face crisis in life they won't be able to handle it. Stop coddling the players. They're grown men. They love basketball. They wanna play basketball n._b._a. Media because they're behold into a handful of really popular stars their initial reaction to anything is caught. All kevin durant wanted to play. Wasn't anybody's fault volved. He wanted to play basketball because he's a basketball player and by the way the n._b._a. Media i bring on all the time i like him but what was just basically a nonsense..

"And I do think the reason I'm talking about this. Colli Leonard's taken a bunch of days off load management. It's kind of funny, new term, I didn't buy into it, but he is the healthy guy that appears to have more gas in the tank now. Steve Kerr this from this morning was asked about K D status for tonight. And here we go. He. Yeah. He went through full shoot around and went back to get treatment. And so we'll listen to as game time decision, but the look good and. We'll see where it all. Yeah. So it's kind of bumpy audio but, you know, the, the injury changes really the entire NBA just think, you know, it's the domino effect. Just think of what Kevin Durant injury affects a the outcome of the finals Canada. If he doesn't play tonight, probably has an NBA championship. That's a big thing to listen. They're hockey teams can advance to the next round so you can make an argument that he it is a seismic shift in the culture of Canada, where the NBA team is competing and winning a championship over a dynasty. And makes a massive impact culturally for the next thirty years in Canada, where young kids grow up basketball fans over hockey fans. It has it changes the outcome. It changes culturally, you know, I'm not I'm not trying to hyperventilate here Canada because of their tax system. It's harder to get the world's best hockey players. It's their sport. We can have in play down in Miami. And no state tax Dallas Stars. So Canada's been struggling in recent years, the last decade to get teams to the second third in the Stanley Cup final, now you're NBA team wins it over a dynasty, that is going to resonate for twenty years in Canada. It also rewrites the warriors dynasty a little bit. Oh, so really, they only won one title without K D, And that was because career began, Kevin love got hurt kind of rewrites the dynasty. I also think does it affect Kevin Durant's decision on free agency will hell I'm hurt. What's the point of going plan forty two minutes a night with a bunch of scrubs in New York? I think it affects other stars free agency. Kyri and Kevin Durant sounded like a really cool thing if Kevin Durant, like bro. I'm not moving and kyri by himself to Brooklyn is just what they have now de ngelo Russell all star, good player, not that relevant big picture. NBA. I also think if Kevin Durant loses and stays at affects LeBron in the west. It affects the Houston Rockets. You know, I think there's this, this is a big deal. Kevin durant. Not playing and I know everybody in Toronto you're making excuses. You can't lose MJ. Kobe Shaq magic bird Dunkin Kevin Durant in the finals. It's not an excuse. It's a reason they're not the same team. It's not to say Toronto's, not good. But I. You know, I start looking at this whole thing, and I think the golden life for all of us listening as you age work smarter, not harder. Kevin Durant going to the next off this injury. I don't think smart. I don't think it is. I think it's working harder with less town in people I am for players making more money and the best players playing with the other best players. And, you know, I was thinking about this. We don't like the way the warriors were constructed. We don't like the Kevin Durant chose them. We don't have a problem with how Michael Jordan, and the bulls were constructed even though they added Rodman. They traded for you know, they traded for a bunch of guys. But we don't like that Kevin Durant. Chose the warriors. So as the warriors lose the finals nobody wants to hear we'll because Katie didn't play..

"Join Taylor is joining me one hour from now. Calling right Colin wrong for the next week. We gotta do a radio show which you started in radio, and I started in radio and so join Taylor ni-, this, these are like the good old days. You started in Miami radio. Yeah. That's a good first market. Why went to school there? So that's a big market has started. It is it is. But that's I encourage people to intern. That's how it works. That's did you intern? I enter my first job was actually the place that I had my first internship. Oh, that's so they must have you must have been a good intern half of them. I can't get out of the building fast enough. You're one of those interns. Everybody's like oh, yeah. She could actually work here. I mean, that's the goal of internship. Yeah. So we kind of a screw off week. When a mean by that it's fun. It's loose and we'll just were knocked off obviously because of the women's World Cup which tomorrow, the United States plays, actually and excited for that much more dependable than our men's national team. I'll get to that later. I'll Kevin Durant. Here's the injury update the warriors. He practiced according to, to report he wasn't very good at practice. Of course, he did not very good at practice. He's got a calf strain this series. It's three two one Toronto. And I think the series is over. And I think they win tonight. I don't think this is a very complicated series. I said before the series, I think I picked a Golden State in six Joe, you picked what was your final pick? I picked the raptors and seven okay. So. On the wrong side of that one. I think one of the things I said before the series lane is something that fans don't talk about, but every scout of ever known talks about. At a scout. Mark Warkentin years ago, said, Scottie Pippen, twice a game deflected, a ball Chicago ended up with it that gave Michael Jordan to moma's actions. He made one he goes Chicago Bulls won a lot of close playoff games late matters. Well, Marcus all PASCAL Salcombe surge vodka. Kalis one of the longest six seven guys on the planet and who's hurt for Golden State their longest player. Kevin Durant cave on looney six nine missed a game. Boogie cousins is running around the court about sixty seventy percent in the NFL you would call this a cluster injury. When you have three receivers go down or four ofensive Lyman or hurts called the cluster injury. The warriors have a cluster injury with their bigs, and it is a huge disadvantage against one of the biggest longest teams in the NBA Toronto Toronto shooting forty five percent in this series and my take on this. I've watched four games. Now, they're just getting more easy baskets. This is where katie's length. Boogie at full strength length would be a factor. It's not just offense. You're not missing. Just Kevin Durant offense obviously. But Kevin a good defender and Kevin's, one of the longest players in the league Golden State's not getting as many easy baskets. So Toronto, not known as a great shooting team shooting forty five and a half percent. Golden State known as the world's best shooting team is shooting forty three percent. What does that tell you Golden State struggling to get easy looks?.

"Whether or not the severity in are you doing everything you can to get back if the organization field that exact same way how to heal this. Kevin Durant, go back to the situation. Look right now, and we've talked about if they wanted without him how bad it will look for D to me, he has nothing to lose at this point if he's able to play. Now, I don't want him to go out there if he's injured in Caridi risk injury, especially going into a free agent year. But if he's ready to play if he goes out for game five and they lose even if he's not great near okay? He might get a little criticism. But he's not no artery. Nobody's gonna kill him. If all the has is upside as well and they win every time they went out what happens if? What happens if he ruptures, that have whatever injury? I grew he does. I don't think if he's injured and shouldn't go out there and play outweigh vise him non to go play. I'm with you on that. But I think this brings up the question of does he go back there. I think he's probably leaving. That's everything you here. But if they lose this series you can go back in that narrative that they don't need you is gone now, so many question marks situated troughs faster, I hear you're sticking around, so we're going to move on from this because we wanna get your opinion on Steph curry, and his reputation as taken a hit in the final series. We're going to discuss that right after this. Ways core. Pool is not a bus ways core. Pool is not a taxi ways core pool is not the metro in DC writers ways core..

"You have more options, you can do what you wanna do, especially if you have the choice, do it, you're going to do it. Right. I want to stay in warm weather. I'm pretty sure a lot of these guys they wanna come to warm weather. That's twenty years. I've been hearing I heard now. Carmelo went east because he engineered a trade, Kevin Durant trade. So I don't know. It's a. Casino mobile. Good. You see to joy with the news. No, no, no. This is the headline news. Well, you never been a raptors believer all year. No. And a lot of people felt like they were done. They went down to you felt like they were done after the off the first game blue out Milwaukee last night, once one zero to even up the series two piece why Leonard being injured in tired, and Seok them suffering from foul trouble. But why still the damage thirty four minutes and said after the game he will keep fighting? Good can keep going keep fighting. We have a chance. So no make means no excuses you playing basketball. And no, we got to win. So fun to watch everything. I mean apart from the fact that I've been extra extra right about Hawaii, after's. So it's a little enjoyable for me. I was probably equally as wrong about the bucks. Although I did say he all year. I think that what's happening with Hawaii is like I said, we, we kind of just forgot because he wasn't playing because of the way the exit went with the Spurs any also must a bunch of games this year. Yes. Yes. And he did take a lot of rest days this year. We didn't know that he was this goody like it just slipped. Everyone's mind like oh, yeah. There was a point where the conversation was is better than LeBron because he is better on both ends of the co or he, he does play ten and given up a plan. But I do think the raptors end up winning the series like you said, they're kind of, it's kind of the same situation to star in each side, and that would not be a good point. Yeah. Oh, god. I think Milwaukee pushes back a little I, I think the raptors would be got. Got Golden State of Kevin Durant comes back has four dependable scoring. I have no faith going to come back to the vinyl. I think they've, I think they would have I think Golden State would hammer Toronto and five without Kevin Durant, if he just gave him boogie for a little thighs a little size. You think bookies sick? I, I just think Milwaukee. Yeah, here's the thing, Golden State when they face Milwaukee, it's real easy to figure out what they're going to do. They're going to put you on us at the line, and they're going to move the ball and shrink the bucks because the bucks are big, and they're going to play a tiny lineup and they're, they're gonna force Milwaukee to go small, and then it just a blowout. They're going to try to you can't take you on us off the court. But you could take every big except you on us off the court. I think Golden State's gonna chop them up Toronto, I think is complete utter mismatch, especially if Kawhi is not one hundred percent. And right now he looked fire than either way. Both of these teams are going to be fatigued going into the finals. They have had an incredible amount of rest. Nine days very, they're going to have a long series. So Kevin Durant is is known for popping back at fans on the internet, and his manager rich climate isn't bothered by it at all. In fact, he loves everything about it. How do you feel about that, that he gets in there mixing it up? Sometimes I love it. I know enough to know that, that doesn't represent anything more than what it is. And Kevin has every right to gauge and communicate and have fun and banter because he's had thirty one year old man who's built this or thirty year old man, just built this incredible enterprise from self. We have honest, conversations, but never would I call them and say, like that's such a bad thing to do for your brand. With anyone going back at fans on the internet. I do about once every couple of weeks. Yeah..

"And then just throw Applebee's in there and thing I'm not not notice it, you got an agenda. You gotta bias. Can you can't start talking about the great quarterbacks of all time and say Brady in Montana and Elway and Marino Aikman? Jimmy garoppolo. The own favor. Kevin durant? You did this for reason? Because you know, the m j thing. Kind of gets in LeBron's had an kyri take LeBron off in a lot of people. Kobe fans don't like LeBron. You did this for a reason? This was not a coincidence. We know Kevin Durant while you're doing this because you thought as the number two player in the world when you went to Golden State and started winning titles. That would elevate you over LeBrun, and it hasn't LeBron still is the lead story on my show and skip show in any debate showing America that talked to NBA LeBron still the king, and you're just really talented. That's that's your identity. You're not even the most important guy in your own team. We know that through statistics wins and losses in analytics when steps gone warriors are average when you're gone. They're still great, listen, I've said this for years magic and bird save the NBA MJ made it global and LeBron made it mobile when you left teams years ago, you were considered disloyal week. Now, if you don't go to a better team, your money grabber winning doesn't matter. You're a diva your week, you're afraid. Kevin Durant doesn't leave Oklahoma City unless LeBron left I for Miami. And took all the Aero's and took all the heat. Lebron's always going to be a bigger deal than Kevin Durant Kevin's chasing ghosts. He'll never be better than LeBron. He'll never be as relevant as LeBron. He'll never be talked about like LeBron. On LeBron leaves teams, they disintegrate. Kevin Durant left Oklahoma City to the second best team in the west right now Golden State one before him if he left they put boogieing they went after him. It's bothering him first. Lebron was toxic. Now, you're mentioning great players. And you're putting kyri in there. Come on. Kevin. It bothers you just admit it. Let me shift to football. I should I should send a check to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Every year a big check because they fill like five six segments a week ESPN once had to do a year long investigation into New England to get dirt. Pittsburgh gives you dirt about twice a week. They did it again yesterday when New England lost to Miami over the weekend. And it was kind of like controversial. It was embarrassing. Gronk took the heat my fault Brady took the heat my fault. Bella check took the heat. My fault story died. For the third time in about four weeks. The Pittsburgh Steelers. It is now Wednesday are talking about a previous game lost to Oakland as the patriot game is now coming up in a few days. Mike Tomlin yesterday. I swear to God, I should pay the Steelers for all the segments. They give me I don't even have to work for him. I just wake up, and they give me another story. Mike Tomlin paying attention in the rear view mirror to the game. They just lost was asked about Big Ben being healthy and not playing and he got into medical equipment because of the lack of information. We thought that the best thing to do. The most prudent thing to do. With to be only to make been available in a merger. See like situation was exactly what we did in Cincinnati several years ago. The X Ray was not clearly readable clarify what you said after the game that you could have brought them back few series earlier. But we said today that your own seen situations is saying he was cleared a few series earlier decided to use them Burgess situation, again guys, you know, we didn't have a lot of information. So dialogue was a part of the discussion. But obviously this thing has had legs, and it has grown and we want to minimize the senseless distractions. So I'm being very transparent with you in terms of what transpired how and why it's Wednesday..
