Yeah, so that's your red. If your mom's seventieth birthday whenever thou? Mom? Speak Bash over the parade. Where is your? The free. But leader was there and I don't. I don't think she just had that frame of Reference I. Just remember that that that night because she plays the drums. That's right. Yeah, that was cool. Woman Anyway. We gave her her parade before she said sw I one parade like New Orleans so. We do it when you can enjoy. So. Anyway SELENA's in in. We talk all the time but boy. We've I feel like I seeing her all the time, 'cause we got on zoom to chat one day, and then she said we should do show coffee, coffee, time or something 'cause we have so much time good time feeling good helping each other talking to things at this time with all of this going on, and then we got into it little fifteen minute format. Of course now it's about twenty two minutes. And you know we, we open with positive chips. Drinking coffee were tell everybody. It's a diversion, and she gives some really cool tips I would make up products and things, but now it's opened up all stop, and then we do. A special guest at nets were to do all these characters that I didn't know I had in their. Salmon the last one I saw. was a special guest. sledding leaking got lot feelings out. Uncle Sam who knew. Tory Russell is also appearing on the broadcast as is yours truly in support of his longtime friend Earl Turner. We are here this week with the Great Earl Turner. Earl is always a pleasure to be around you to talk to you. Thank you for for being with me this week. How are you feeling? Or How's everything going? I'm feeling good. Thank you so much for having me John. It's always a pleasure to talk to you to hang with you. It's just always a lot fush. We've known each other for quite some time and I want to start with the with the the first time I saw you. 'cause it's one of my favorite stories ever in Las Vegas. It was when you were at the Rio and it was the. I think it was called the Rio Bombo Lounge. Yup they're ninety nine and I was going there to see to see the then recently opened a Voodoo Lounge cafe upstairs. I was walking across the casino and I heard this energy and I felt this power coming from the casino floor to the off to the side. Where right now is the is a sportsbook and kind of the elmer gorilla thing in that area and I went over there and I saw people who were sitting at slot machines who were dressed up outside this lounge right. They were there a night out and they were sitting machines and not playing them. And I heard this sound blasting out of this room and I went in at the entrance of it and it was packed with people dressed up and having a time in the middle of this thing under a light was earl turner in a canary yellow suit. As I remember way and you remember that throwing it down dude and I was like what I have I walked into it was like a it was like the energy that just suck me and I looked around and people were having a blast and I'm like I don't know who this guy is exactly but I need to get to know him. I thought feeling I'M GONNA be writing about him saving and sure enough so there you go. That was a nine. You've been in Las Vegas. I think can hear what yeah loud. You remember those days. Why Ever Las Vegas to man? That really wasn't from Las Vegas. I don't know whether I would call it the beginning of the end sure. It's IT'S BEGINNING OF THE END. Of the lounges as we knew them Historically from LAS VEGAS. Yeah where they were The place to go to place to be to see Some really really really good entertainment That's not to say that we don't have great. Entertainment allows but the idea of the lounges has been kinda overshadowed by now the nightclubs and it's it's a different. It's a different time but those those days man you went to the casinos and You checked out what was going on. In the lounges. As much as you did the showrooms there were going to be entertainers in their even at their all. And you're going to have a good time. It was. It was certainly a destination experience. And I know that you were able to to break from your Earlier gigs at during your sets to go see other performers along astronomer or lounge and small venue institutions. People Checkmate's I think we were invented that time interesting. That you mentioned the Voodoo Voodoo had been open for a little while a guy by the name of Jimmy Hopper Was Holding Court up there. Okay and what? How many floors up was that? Was that a ticket was a fifty fifty. First and fifty second floors the restaurants underneath. And then the the lounges on top. I think those are the floor. Fifty fifty one fifty two Night and at this time the the Rio was owned by a very predominant builder in Las Vegas by the name of Twenty Mar. Now the gentleman who was the president or general manager of the Rio at that time. was a guy named John Lip quits. They had hired me to come to the real There were there. Were two sort of stipulations that John had was that he wanted to make sure that I had a sax player and to he wanted me to cross market with Jimmy Hopper on the weekends on every other weekend Jimmy and I would alternate going to each other's lounge and doing a song or two with each other every weekend but you gotta understand something. The weekends at the Rio were unbelievable. Imagine the Strip on New Year's Eve okay That's what the inside of the Rio was like. At that time every weekend showed the shoulder literally. I had to be taken with security through back ways through the back of House. entrances and exits to get up stairs to the fifty second floor. Why because it was impossible for me to get from my Riobamba Lounge to the masquerade area of the casinos impossible. That's how literally shoulder to shoulder. It would take. I don't know probably ten fifteen minutes to walk across the casino every weekend. We had to be escorted to each other's venues. How crazy that place was now? Mind you it was the place to be Because the palms hadn't even open yet he's mom's wasn't even built. Yeah I remember the the opening of Club Rio. It was the the first Hotel it had a mega club in it. That was X-ray and when they expanded it with a the Ma- I think it was a masquerade towers. Up in that whole expansion of it was. It was a really cool place. You are so right and I remember when I walked into too. That was another thing. In the way was the day GLO paint painted the whole vibe of their Jimi was playing an atlas another world. It was really really cool. I don't think people who have recently moved to Las Vegas can appreciate how how Sheikh the RIA wasn't how on point it was. It was a really fun place. Yeah you're right in the center of Mantle or forget that night quite a time man. Yeah you got the you got you moved to Las Vegas About Eighty nine right came on permanently for the dunes took out why. What was the catalyst for you performing there and Why was it that particular resort launched a career in Las Vegas? Okay so if I said was the only place I could get a job okay. We'll hire you and that was it. That was my catalyst and then they said we'll pay you and I was like. Oh it's on show up. Yeah Yeah There's no question about it. I'm here I could not get a job I could not get booked. It wasn't that I couldn't get a job. I couldn't get booked in Las Vegas because at that time The entertainment directors. Didn't you know. They did what they wanted to do. In terms of bookings were always bands and people that wanted to be booked potatoes and so on so they didn't have to go anywhere. I wasn't in Tau so they couldn't come see me. It was a catch twenty two. See me because I wouldn't booked in town. I wasn't booked to now because they hadn't seen right. Oh I had and I told the story. I told the story last night. I had been scheduled by manager. Had got me a date at the Met Lounge. You remember the midland. Yes Event Hotel. I remember it being. Yeah I remember being before I lived here but I certainly know it. Yes okay so. The Mint Lounge was the premier place to perform. If you were of any substance in this town okay. That's where the Santa Fe Santa Fe. Oh my gosh. Yeah and so. If you've got a GIG in the meant lounge who you were on but you had better be on when you get there. I got a job at the loud. I gotTa Contract Admit Lounge through my manager. He knew the guy there and a month before was supposed to come to Las Vegas to perform for the first time. They sold it so back to square one and so my manager came to Las Vegas so so my manager says to me you know what we need to do is we need to book Laughlin and so you know I said where Laughlin Yeah and I was like. Oh Kay he said. Yeah if I can get you the Laughlin than maybe I can get someone from Las Vegas to come down and see you. So that was the plant so I had been I come to Laughlin in Nineteen. Eighty Eight My manager while I was in Laughlin came to Las Vegas and he knocked on every door possible of every entertainment director possible at every casino possible. Nobody would go too often to see me. And so as he was about to leave town with his tail literally between his legs his last phone call was to the entertainment director at the dunes. A lady by the name of Karen Dorsey who she are still great friends. Even today he called her and it just so happened when he mentioned laughlin she said my husband and I. I can't remember whether there's a birthday and anniversary or something we're going with another couple to Laughlin This weekend and he said that's great. He said that's where my guy is. Could you guys possible? Could you just stop in and see him for maybe five minutes? Just stop in and see him so they had really. They'd struck a chord with one another even though they hadn't met and so she agreed to do it. She agreed to while they were in Laughlin stopped by Colorado and See Sky. So Yeah Yeah so she her husband. Joe and the other couple they come to Laughlin and she tells them I really need to go now. She's not supposed to be working. I really need to go and see the sky. His manager called.

How you doing with toys good. I knew normal yeah for your new normal all right <hes> and how did you arrive in las vegas in the first place. Let's go back to your to the very beginning. We're getting your call. I actually moved here because my mother lived here and my husband was a bartender and i was a singer and the seem like the perfect place and so when when i moved here right when i got here i got pregnant so it was like no gigs growing and my mom was the hair and that's mainly why we moved here but when before you moved to las vegas he had a very rich a long history and music. Let's talk about the legendary yeah and i i started really when i was eleven years old twelve years old twelve elvers old. I ended up on broadway when i was fifteen. Then i won star search junior star search when i was sixteen record deals and toward the world god had voted best new artists at the tokyo music festival and was up against richard marx tiffany and debbie gibson and i don't know how i won because they couldn't make it because my records didn't sell as much as there's that's right. She's been bowling. We went one time. It was like in portland under something but you're on new original original star search american idol alexander harris those high notes rainbow. I i went in choice. It was hot for american idol of my day our day actually famous like people would recognize you around yeah the star search girl and and then after that i got the record deal and then i worked on one record with a guy named jelly bean miss and i had a hit dance record in the eighties lady's name eh who found who doesn't mean the man who and <hes> then after that i ended up doing a second record and that's when i went to minnesota soda to work with david z. produce the fine young cannibals and jody lee and the jets and he was huge at the time so they put me with him and then like three months into recording prince kind of walked in the studio because it was at paisley park that was his studio where he has shown up originally probably on tour time but but he showed up and didn't believe that it was me singing and said can you go in and prove it and i said sure so i did wonderful studio yeah and then he kind of put the callback button in the studio and said hey meet me in studio city. I want you to sing on some stuff. So i ended up singing on the twelve inch version of party man for batman soundtrack trek and time we worked together and then he was working on his movie graffiti bridge and he took poor. Jill jones jones. I love her to death but she she had the part. She was singing. She was in the movie and she was supposed to sing this song. Something must have happened. He got one of his moods his and he took the solo away from her and had missing it with morris day but she had a lip sing me in the movies so she wasn't allowed to sing and then had to sing me right. She must have been happy about that was in a way though that way. He likes games he was. He thought it was fun. I guess <hes> and i never knew that there was this thing. I didn't even know a and when i sang the song i didn't realize that the words were as risque okay as they were confused so he never played me morris days part. It was just my part so i was answering. Mar stays days parts of is steaming. Excuse me rescue part and i was answering questions things. I didn't know i was getting questioned. Weren't you surprised when i heard the whole thing went. Oh my god. My grandmother is gonna kill the only to meet him. Originally i mean i hard to sing in now because i was not a prince fan i was. I like new a couple of a song so it wasn't like in awe now. If i were known then what i know now i would have been like i wouldn't be able to talk because he's just just that talented of a writer and just musician everything he's alien such even just a guitar player. I think he would have been alleged. Agenda's this that the piano playing the guitar the bass playing the even the drumming. I mean every instrument yeah once in a generation very few people like him. If any sorted you go from the serum there <hes> he had me singing on graffiti bridge and then i he started to come around more you're and he'd give me songs and say. Do you want to do this and i started recognizing. Some of the titles 'cause kids would talk so i knew darling nikki was when i saw the cassette tape that said darling nikki. I said that's your song and he'd say so. You do know who i am and i'm mike yeah my supposed to treat you differently like so we became friends ends and it was a very cool friendship because he knew that i wasn't lake a yes person. I wasn't you know in awe of him so he he likes is being around me. He'd call me in the middle of the night and asked me what i did that day and i'd tell him just normal stupid stuff and he'd want to know more and i'd be like okay. This is boring to me okay but must be fun for you because you.

"Joe? Joe? No. Just an old sweet. Keeps Georgia on my mind. Joe? Love comes as we'd and clay. Through the pie. Their arms reach out. There is. Still in. Jaw? No. Dustin old Swedes. Kids joe. Great sounds of the classic right there as Dita's with us tonight to talk about the new deana Martin celebrity roasts. Now Dina's I understand it. These are going to happen. Once a month. I believe twelve of its per year. Right. Yes. Yes. And it's not just for a, you know, a singers or actors or celebrities like that. Well celebrities. It's I think, you know, Bernie Williams never fifty one for the Yankees. Oh, yeah. Sure. He played. I just came back from Staten Island. We did a show, and I got Bernie he was playing guitar for me. So be played guitar guitar. He's classically trained. He's unbe. Unbelievable. We were at the at the friars club one night. And he was there. We started talking, and I told him I said, you know, because I knew he played guitar. And he said, well anytime you want me to, you know, just give me a call. And I'll, you know, send me the music, and I'll be able to do it. I said oh my gosh. All right. Well, I'm in Staten Island on may third. He said I'm in. He's a do. I have to I said, I don't think so. And he showed up live to tell you. He was spectacular. And he's so funny. And I well, you know, what we're going to have to roast you. He's people. I know a lot of my friends would love to do that. And of course, we have Vince Ferragamo, you know, from my my Super Bowl Super Bowl champion. And so I got a lot of friends. So it's not just actors or singers that were we are some athletes as well. Yeah. Yeah. I used to actually play the trombone a bit head my af FM card. You know, the funny thing about playing the trombone you can take one too. A party. No one ever ask you to play. That's true kind of like the accordion, something like that. Yeah. What's the best sound you can make with a trombone? That's that's the sound that makes it hits the bottom of a dumpster. But I digress. All right view rim shots there and gone here. So so you're going to have these rose you're going to be the roast master, right? That absolutely always the rose master. And so for me, it's so much fun because that means I get to kind of roast each and every roaster before I introduce them, which is really a lot of fun for me. And so all of the people who who come are just special now when we're in in Las Vegas, of course, I had the was Gladys let me see through the roof buzzy character would she would come out with her person, of course from in. Sure. Oh, yeah. She was. She was hysterical. But we have we have that character. Clint Holmes who was a fabulous singer. Very. Yes. He actually he was based in the nation's capital for many years. Yes. And his wife, and I. I'm going to be doing a show with them next year in Florida let you know, you should you should come. But his wife Kelly Clinton, she plays the best Ruth buzzy you've ever seen. And so it's it's the whole show is just like the Dean Martin celebrity rose. But it, you know, it's now, and and it's hysterical. But the whole cast of characters is great. I'm just going to try and find a foster Brooks because oh my gosh. All the what an act he was for those who don't remember if you don't remember name foster Brooks the drunk the drunk roaster. Everybody remembers him when he came into the bar my dad's sitting at the bar, and he comes in. He's a pilot and he's just exactly. And he played a neurosurgeon. Oh, my. Things like that. So we're, you know, it's it's the characters that we we get on the day us. It's it's just absolutely spectacular. So I get to roast each and every one of them and Tony Orlando. I think is probably an accident. Bobby Rydell, and it's it's just gonna be it's spectacular. And all of my friends who are comedians and singers. And it's it's just it's good a good old fashioned fun. Entertainment. Sorting sounds like it now will these be broadcast or will. They just be impersonal events for the well, we are looking to have them broadcast. But for now, they're just going to be in house, the problem with with broadcasting, as you know, with all the different entertainers who are on it. It's it's a little difficult every getting everybody we're going to, you know, with because I've got Robert I got Robert Williams who's putting it together. And he knows he knows how to put together shows, and and get all the clearances and everything. So that's that. That's his job. My job is getting the people who are we're going to roast and writing a lot of the material and getting to good the good writers..

"You've been asking for Michael Shapiro again. Here's great. He was on over year ago and people just love talking about a fantastic show. I mean, it's a show. It's a lifestyle reckless in Vegas. It is a lifestyle because we're actually looking into reality show that they're already starting to film. Michael first of all great to see you again, it's been a little while the show still popular as ever, but this reality show thing. Where'd you get the idea? And what are we looking at? I know it's in the shopping phase. But I I know you're pretty excited about it. First of all really great to be here in good to see you again. You know, it's kind of a secret we're not leading to much of it out at this point. But I just there's a show that I loved for fifteen years I've been watching live at Daryl's house, which is a New York and Daryl hall from hall notes, of course. And I just love the camaraderie and friendship that happens on the show, and then they play music, and of course, my whole life is built around music. So when my wife shall I bought a house little year ago, and it's old Vegas was built in nineteen sixty eight and it's got that old Vegas. I mean, you feel like Sinatra is going to be walking through the front door at any minute. And so in the studio, we we set it up to be able to to film, we wanted to bring friends over to the house local entertainers and also international celebrities that come into or through Las Vegas, and as you know, with all the residencies here there, it's pretty rich. Right. So we invite him over to the house, and we have a nice meal. We'll bring a celebrity, chef and joy. So you don't break bread with them and talk about life, and love and music, and spirituality, whatever comes up very candid. And then we go in our student, we perform one of the reckless represent mega has we have thirty two arrangements in their all Vegas songs that are made modern and contemporary L original arrangements, and we'll have the guest actually be the guest singer. And we'll play one of our arrangements and have them say very little kind of like a little bit of Jimmy Fallon. And then that says the plan along, but not much more relaxed and kind of honest setting. That's putting the tonight show. But it is a very cool thing, you know. And that's what the reckless in Vegas has just such a fantastic and people love that concept where you take the old Vegas stuff. But you put your own your own Mark on. Any you have a lot like if you go to the website one thing, you'll notice this is a lot of comments from people that have reviewed the show scene and everybody kind of says the same thing. Wow. That was way more than we expected always kept that after a show. I don't know what they're I if it's me that they have low expectations for but after the show like, wow, we did not expect that. Borderline insult listen if somebody comes up to me and says while you you're playing is unbelievable in my in my heart in my head. I'm thinking what about my voice? And if they come up and say, why your voice is fantastic. I think what about my guitar playing. So, you know, I don't know what it is. I think it's some kind of insecurity or something. What tell folks kind of some of the things. You do you like Sinatra? Okay. But give me an example, something you'll do Sinatra song. Well, so okay. There's a great arrangement. We do for a very good year. Which is also. And you know, Frank was the chairman of the board the king of telling stories in his songs, and and the way he delivered the message. What was important to us is that we did not mess up. The original versions we wanted to put our own originally originality into it because I'm gonna original artist. You know, put a lot of original music, and I didn't want to cover it. I wanted to remake it, but yet pay on March to it. So we took Jefferson airplane's white rabbit, and we put it is the music bed for Frank Sinatra's. It very good year. And it just works. We take I got killing Kelly Clinton horns to sing one force of three times. One morning I woke up, and I heard led zeppelin's a whole lot of love. And I always wanted to new boots are made for walking by Nancy Sinatra, and I heard the two perfectly, and I went my studio wind them up and they were perfectly so. Great for walking over the top of led zeppelin's whole lot of love, which is kind of unusual. But. People like myself that loves music, and like both both areas I like the Led Zeppelin that might be like that. The Nancy Sinatra to be able to match that up. It's incredible. It's a lot of fun. And when I first started doing this. We put an album out back in two thousand thirteen we spent a year on it. We really thought that it would be a younger generation, you know, on twenties and thirties that would be introduced to this great music. We would sorta if you will trickle into liking great music because it means you could so different today, and it's coming out, and when we got out to Vegas. We were surprised to see the demographic is actually fifty to eighty and I think it's I call lightning in a bottle. But what it is for the people that the grew up listening to these original songs, they're they're they're under seventies and eighties rock and roll. Which is kind of what we do with. These songs is so useful useful energy. So because we kept the lyrics and the melodies true to the original versions, but the music is rock and roll it's nostalgic form because they hear the the original sound, but then this rock and roll thing makes him feel young. And useful. So yeah. Because even if they were listening to Franken dean and all that back, then okay? They've lived a lot of life since then they've heard a lot of this rock thing. And what kind of a cool thing to see that great music still live in kind of another form. And then the fifty year olds and six year olds. Of course, they grew up on rock and roll. But the parents were listening to Sinatra Dean Ryan, so it's a double whammy on that. So it's been really great more with superstar musician Michael Shapiro of reckless in Vegas in just a few moments time now for another. Visit with Eddie, oh,.

"For an up and coming comedian to get some practice right here on our show coming. Right and comedian somebody who just needs stage work. Absolutely. Well, hold on before you answer that we had John Wayne Bobbitt in-studio yesterday, and John Wayne is actually doing a little stand up around town. He's he's he's starting up a stand up career. He's got about eighty penis jokes. And he just rolls them off one after another on this show. So crazy. Yeah. He does journal jokes. He has a lot of jokes jokes. Yeah. There really isn't an open mic format, but I can think of off the top of my head and lost some open night stuff. Like every once in a while. Dennis Blair will do jokes at the Tuscany John lounge people get up at the Kelly Clinton's bootlegger bistro shows on Monday nights, a few minutes. It would start there. And then maybe get a a hosting gig over at a laugh factory were Harry basil has given some people's, Nah, I love Harry base. At least the best Vegas is not a great place to develop comedy now. Tablist comedian. Open mic is it's such a competitive environment. It's hard to you know, it's hard to justify somebody who's a novice coming in at against you could make money the Palestinians tracks or mute to have that they used to have an open mic a four-match comedy. By the way, we Anderson got on stage with carrot top last night at carrot top show, walks or. Yeah, I just wrote about this. Yeah. They had lunch on Tuesday. And Louie Anderson tells really allowed come in. Tomorrow night. So the Wednesday being the night so Louis came rupture with the regular opener per character came on stage. He said, I'm sick. I'm under the weather or something to bring up somebody who's only done up two or three times. Give a warm. Welcome to somebody might not have heard of his name's Louie Anderson. Goes off stage. In a black sequined jacket. That's so awesome, forty minutes. When I saw Louie Anderson back in the day. I believe it was pal station and me and my wants to say, hey, it'd be really funny to buy him, twelve doughnuts. And put it right on the stage as he gets on the stage. So Louis gets on the stage. We put the doughnuts up there. He looks at us. And he goes, you know, some comedians and celebrities they get underwear thrown at them. They get money thrown at them. I get doughnuts. And then five minutes five minutes into his set. He starts eating donuts as he's doing the comedy. He's like guys, I apologize. But I couldn't resist any went through gone through six or seven donuts. Turn. Yeah. That was our Louis yellow gig. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's fine. Awesome. He's great. And he's wonderful guy. Still lives in Vegas. Oh, yeah. At least. He's certainly a legend in the business. Okay.
