Moving past the jokes: Lorena Bobbitt hopes documentary will shed light on domestic violence

"Horn. Thanks for joining us, a word of warning to listeners with young children in the audience and this segment where we talk about the documentary series lorraina and our conversation includes discussions of violent adult material a little more than twenty five years ago. Lorena Bobbitt was accused of malicious wounding the conquer around the world comes to Atlanta sensational trial is attracting quite a bit of media. Attention fifteen. Twenty satellite trucks about two hundred reporters this time court TV's bringing the proceedings to millions of homes lorraina Bob at goes on trial today on charges of malicious warnings. She's facing a twenty year sentence in prison the maximum if she is convicted Bob it had cut off her husband's penis in nineteen Ninety-three with a kitchen knife. And throwing it out the car window. The authorities found that attached penis and doctors were able to reattach it and the whole story went viral as possible in the pre internet era. There was a circus atmosphere during her trial and the reign of became the butt of many cruel jokes the Amazon documentary series lorraina produced by Jordan Peele and directed by my guest, Joshua Rowe Fe, examines, what was lost in the media's reporting. There's ample use of archival footage in this series as well as modern interviews both with the rain up and her now ex husband, John, Wayne Bobbitt, we'll start with the fact that Lorena Bobbitt was an. Immigrant from Ecuador and totally dependent on her husband when they got married lorraina came here at age eighteen in search of the American dream thought, she found it when she met this handsome charming marine, named John Wayne, John Wayne Bobbitt, and they dated for about ten months. She was virgin they had a chaperone on every date. It was this very pure, according period that was beyond old-fashioned, then the married, and according to the arena a few weeks into the marriage. They were driving home one night. He was drunk driving radically, and she was screaming and begging for him to to stop and slow down. And then he punched her in the chest. And according to lorraina this thing essentially began the next four years of beatings rape on a regular basis. And it's not just according to lorraina because what you do in your series. Is you step back Nunnelee from her marriage to John Wayne Bobbitt, but other women who encountered John Wayne Bobbitt over the years and many of them, including a couple of his former wives. Tell almost idea. Stories. That's very true. When we were making this. We just we kept finding more victims. And in episode four one of those victims who's never spoken publicly will speak until a story that is harrowing his anything you'll ever hear. It was really terrifying to find that all the stories that we've found all the people that we spoke to they essentially had experienced the same specific details that Lorena had in terms of the the abuse. Whether it was the way the hands were held the way they would be sexually assaulted and so on and so forth the threats he would make if they said anything or tried to do anything. Absolutely. You know, letting them know that they can never escape him. This is a person who according to multiple courts of law is a serial abuser. A lot of people know what happened between Lorena Bobbitt, and John Wayne Bobbitt, and that is that she cut off his penis, and it was surgically reattached, but what your jockey series is about is something different. So when you start work on this documentary, what were your assumptions, how do they mirror? What maybe the public's assumptions were. And how did you decide that? There was a much bigger story that you wanted to tell and how that story start to fall into place. I mean. And I guess everybody remembers the cutoff penis, they don't remember the fact that she was horrifically abused. So that that was sort of ground zero for us. But as we got deeper into making it and all of a sudden all these pieces were so obviously in place, and those pieces would essentially set her up for disaster, Anita hill, William Kennedy Smith rape trial, the Tailhook scandal, these massive landmark moments in, you know, very recent American history where women were violated, and they either weren't believed or they were vilified or they even went through some sort of judicial process and came up short that was in the years leading up till arenas story hitting. And so when nineteen Ninety-three came around she was up against something that was that was insurmountable. Her husband actually knows that. That he has multiple cards to play against her and one of them is the threat of deportation which he holds against her. Let's hear what she has to say about her own life and coming to the United States because this guy here this abusive has been was shattering my American dream hour. Not let. I wouldn't let that happen. So just try to fight it. So when this incident happens Lorena Bobbitt quickly, I think realizes that. She is in way over her head. What does she up against in terms of the institutions in terms of the way that people in law enforcement are talking about our case, you know, econo- comes down to just the way domestic violence was dealt with in the late eighties early nineties, and we start to go into that. Especially in episode four where one of the cops who was part of the search for the penis that night. He tells us viewer essentially what it was like for a police officer to show up to a domestic violence nine one one call and there was no real protocol in place. Tell someone to go for a walk walk. The husband around the block, let them cool off. Right. And then the cops would leave. And then whoever was the victim in this case is locked right back in that house with the person who's been abusing them. And so for lorraina, no matter where she looked there really was no help. I think one of the things that is

"And all that kind of stuff that actually does it might be, you know, a smaller problem than the, you know, the fact that more women are in these these lower rung positions than management, but that's also all of his confidence of is tied up into why women don't get promoted into management. Totally an I I mean, I feel that so strongly because like I see what I think of as millennial transparency seems like Milan. Meals are all about telling each other what they earn. I don't want to talk about what I am. Because not because I think it's a lot. But because I think I'm, you know, it's probably not like, I'm probably not doing well in because I'm no good at negotiating, and I don't really want to negotiate. And I wish that we all just had pay grades. And we didn't like that. Was it, you know? And I thought it was interesting in the Harvard Business School study that you mentioned it noted that the one thing is that so soft negative aspect of this transparency is people who are or believe themselves to be in the on the lower side of things it's not good for their motivation. It makes them kind of want to leave the company, but it also doesn't help the people who are on the higher side believe themselves to be on the higher side like, psychologically. It's not really good apparently for anyone. And I think that's that. Really is I don't know if that's male female. Clearly, there is the sense that women are less, comfortable less. Good at negotiating, clearly, not all women. But I know that. I am one of those women, and I like it just makes me so uncomfortable. I don't want to like the idea of asking for more money is just awful. Yeah. I'd rather have money deal with it. Really interesting. I take it. You're not if that byu Hannah. Oh, I mean, personally, I feel exactly what you guys feel extremely difficult. I talk about this all the time. I mean in my book, I interviewed this woman who is known as the Queen of Wall Street, I interviewed her and she said that it was so difficult for her to ask for a raise that she was incredibly successful high earning person that she would like she would practice in the mirror for two weeks ahead of time, and she would still get splotch she'll over her neck, and so she had to wear a turtleneck on the day that she was going to ask for a raise under her suit. So that nobody would. So she could just have more game. Like, nobody would see her nervousness. But yeah, it's it's painful to me how deeply ingrained it this. This is I've I've I've spoken about this before. But I tried for while to get my daughter to negotiate her babysitting rates, just like try. Getting it in their early like just ask for fifty cents more or whatever it's just like, I don't understand why it's so hard for women because the disparities and starting salaries are are are often the problem like like women ask for lower starting salaries, and then it just continues on into life. So yeah, you're right. The confidence thing is a problem. And and maybe I feel okay with just an institutional fixed like June. You said like is there like I don't want to shame you or anyone for for finding it just like extraordinarily difficult to to get the words out of your mouth. So maybe given given that which is your that's the way you're a culture, it'd than then why not like blit let the institution solve the problem for you. I mean, I when I was running double X sites, and we had both men and women writing for us almost exactly to a person all the men who wrote stories for us ask for more money. Yeah. Women. Almost never did t- think they were way more women than men. Do you think it's like a fear of rejection?.

"I do not think everyone who who know isn't a fraternity is some kind of horrible rapist. But I just think that the conditions under which fraternities exist are sort of like, it's like, you know, it's like hot and swampy in Victoria forms. You know? Like, I just I don't understand. This is like this is like someone is doing PR for fraternities mostly. Here's what you gotta do. You gotta hang a banner saying, we don't like rape. And it will all be fine. Like, I it's it's totally a response. So several years ago, there was a giant national conversation about sexual assault on campus. And of course, you know, there was that giant, and I thought incredibly done Caitlyn planning on peace on fraternities fraternities are facing a lot of cultural backlash. And so, you know, if you're a sort of savvy person running an organization, of course, you're going to try to work to an end. Of course, I'm sure there is some genuine like, you know, desire to make the world better at play. But like, I'm sorry. If the the the example, you're cherry picking is they turned in their fraternity brother who confess to rape. I I just don't know what tell you just. All right. Can I can I can I do it. Can I do to defense of the fraternity? Okay. I'm gonna try. Okay. All right defense number one defense number one. Is it is true? That for whatever reason like men can't find the spaces to talk about stuff, you know, like they just it's just harder. I don't know why like, you know, to talk to to talk about manliness or like like sex performance or just like stuff involved in the changing ways that you're supposed to be a man. So she makes the case that fraternities are maybe a good formal place to have these kinds of discussions that they essentially function like the women's center. Like, you go there, and it's a place where oh my God faith. Like, the we sent to that was that was that was the straw. That broke the comes by. Well, just like, I don't understand. Why culturally it's so difficult for men to find spaces? I mean when I read the end of men, that's the comment. I would get like constantly. It's like, well, I don't you know, how where do you talk about these things? Although I guess now since then there's been just like tons of Goodman project type, you know, like like online spaces where you can discuss stuff like that. I can I posit that actually fraternity culture is part of what's making it hard for men to talk about this stuff. Like the virgin vascular entity that is by and large with with. I'm sure some science shining exceptions that is by large promulgated in these places is not the kind of masculinity that like allows men to talk openly about things, right? It is this like, let's get really drunk. So we don't have to actually sort of use any social skills, and let's like compare how many people we slept with. I just do not. I'm all for their being better ways for young men to talk about. Like the experience of being a young, man. I think that's like crucial. But maybe there should be a men center. But I don't think a fraternity like, which is totally unregulated. They just are like the kings of their castle over there and the castle has like a dungeon usually where there's beer pong. But like. This is this is not solving that problem. It's like exacerbating the problem. But okay, you had a second one HANA. Okay. That failed. Okay. So let me try the second one. That's one was what about the idea like the whole idea of all male spaces. You know, like we do except all females bases. Such as this podcast where we get to discuss things in the kind of it's not well defined. But like, let's say through a female lens like it's just works out slightly differently than when three women kind of look out at the world, you know? And so and so is is what we're saying? Like, the all-male space is just by its very nature toxic. I mean, just because there's more aggression in it because the code among men is a certain way. But is there just something wrong about saying like just by the very nature of being like men collected in a house? No like, you can't do that. No. I don't think..

"I mean ramp-up economy. Cut off his penis. And she wasn't entirely the villain in this, by the way, even at the time. Like, you know, feminists were sort of like, at least jokingly sort of taking her side and sort of more seriously taking her side to talk about marital rape. Like, I don't actually think that she was treated in a way that seems odd to our is now I think it was actually weirdly more fair than the way that Anita hill in Monica Lewinsky retreated, I'm I'm yeah. I mean, there's I'm definitely don't think that that it's on the same is on a par with Monica Lewinsky, but I have to say that as much as my first response is as the as the documentary began. I was not that impressed with it. But then it did feel like there was something really important about seeing how the media treated the story. So for example, he and his brothers Ronin episode of the Jenny Jones show kind of a daytime a women's show and the way that they're. Kind of the demand. The brothers would set I wanted to kill her because she took the thing that is most important to a man the way that the doctors talk about like my God, he might have had to pee like a woman his whole life. And like, the the these things that you know, as if like again, I don't mean to like, it's not nothing that she maimed him. That is not okay. On the other hand, you know, the fact that we, you know, kind of outside of the specifics of the case like that that was considered on a par with the concept of marital rape. And there were many people at the time you said, well, that's an oak Seymour on. You know, the the word people that were jurors who said can you really rape, your wife, and that that you know, so to hear those attitudes. At least it was. So maybe it's not so much about lorraina herself. But the attitudes of that were expressed them without much pushback. Even though like I'd been on feminine. Publications at that point where we certainly did give push back in and the marital rape laws were suddenly a subject that we wrote about. But it that was fringe, you know, in the mainstream of America, it was kind of a joke. Although it seems like this case actually made it more of a discussion, and and more of a clear moral thing for many people. Yeah. Yeah. I think she kind of punctured the culture with the exception of this wife rape thing which which people did have a hard time getting their minds around like to me. It's more like what happened with fatal attraction like she just kind of channeled a rage of the moment appropriately. Like, she just kind of. It's like do we shut down? Or does something get unleashed by an event. And so with Monica Lewinsky like everyone shut down like we need a broaddrick. Everyone shut down. It was like this isn't really happening. You know, we love our president. But with with Lorena Bobbitt, I feel like everything just kind of exploded like a certain kind of anger from women. Particular kind of feminism like they're just something like they were just some like she was like rage unleashed in the culture in the way that some tabloid stories. Can do you know? Yeah. I mean, just the metaphor of it the lake the just Freudian young, and whatever you wanna call it. It's the lake I it's just a perfect little rage retribution tale, you know, like, how could the culture non-exploded around is sort of like, how did it take us this long like an serve this. There's this central conceit that is just such a, you know, I'm talking about like, it's a movie this is central conceit. Like that Lorraine applauded know that I mean, the the central fact of it is so arresting, but all the details around it just struck me as like so fully American, you know, just the whole milieu of it was just like this is our American tragedy like the anger that the sex habits other this sort of you know, she she was staying with in him in this bad marriage..

I took endgame under eighty point five after that big upper scoring the first half when they're in the first quarter. And then my last day was Clemson minus twenty one and a half in game wager. I went seven and on that guy who made an absolute killing, and I did miss a show to do it. Then talked about. He he he made a killing. And I didn't like aside. I looked at the game. I didn't feel aside. I felt the over. And so went there, and like the over which was interesting, I got it at fifty eight and it was and and it ended up being sixty by before the end of the third quarter. Nothing. I can't believe how many ports points were scored. But barely got over in a game that you thought was going to bleed out the over but barely in the fourth quarter. They put a lot of their second and third on both sides. But yeah, you're right. But congratulations to you for hitting Kasai JD, and I made a few bucks. My girlfriends, and I went to the the video store down the street from college and got the John Wayne Bobbitt uncut movie, maybe popcorn in the, you know, the dorm lounge went back to our my friends. So she had a sweet so it was like a real with two bedrooms and a living room. So we all sat in the living room on the couch popcorn and proceeded to watch John Wayne Bobbitt uncut, first of all can I tell you how bizarre it it. Because we were fascinated. We wanted to see what does thing thing thing looked like right after it had been sliced off, and then reattach, and but can I tell you that we didn't think that one all the way through? Meaning like, we didn't realize what we had signed up for because when you turn on an adult film. Of course, there's that awkward at least back in the olden days when the stories. Yeah..

"The girl. Right. Can I help make a comfortable in you know? Just make the customer feel comfortable. What are you get paid for a gig like that? Oh regular salary. I don't know. I don't want to get paid back. Then. So that's how you met Dennis drove the limos and bartended and the number of things that need to be done. Can you imagine if you're going to the bunny ranch JD? Yeah. And John Wayne Bobbitt your hands. Ranch hand, more less. We'll fix it. Don't worry about it. JD? Your unusually today. I want you to be more funny than that. Okay. So how long did you work there for two years two years ninety eight ninety nine? So this is okay. This is a long gotten some legal troubles then. Yes, yes. We can get into that coming back. But okay. So you're there for a couple of years before we get to what transpired your legal problems. And all that, you know, Dennis seemed to be a guy, and you knew pretty well. He seemed to be a good, dude. Healthy. That's about understand, you know. Well, when I know he has diabetes, and he was kinda leaning out of the hospital. And the people said he was in good health. He wasn't extremely overweight. Did he do drugs? Have you ever seen? Dennis drugs. Never seem to do drugs this marine guards and drink. Okay. So the smoking and drinking has gotta get pretty pretty bad diet too. Well, he had diabetes to. Yeah. He so he didn't eat good. You're saying he smoked a lot. And he drank a lot. Yes. So what do you think happened over the weekend? You think it was just a case where his heart gave out or because they're saying no drugs were found the investigators, they know drugs. So maybe he was a big guy though, and seventy two's heavy and and took a stole see they could just caught out. So what do you think's gonna happen with his ranches?.

"Yes, I am like spritzing Robin robs like, yeah, I don't have anybody if you've rude, but spritz him with something. We got to ruin his clothes on camera. Well, there was an article that I wish we would have pulled this one about the the woman who's sprayed bleach on the man's spreader on the. I had that. I have that in the bowl historian talking about later now, let's talk about it now. Yeah. So what happened? So. That seems like assault, right. There was Russia Tyson, so say rules don't apply. Yeah. Okay. So they're Tyson, you know, the man's spreading that thing that you do when you travel is spread out so that nobody can sit by right? That was kind of like what happened to Spencer with the bed. I think. Yeah, it was as I, I slept spoil spread eagle style on that bed. Yeah. Okay. And there was a woman that she was fighting the man's spreading that she poured. She poured bleach on a guys guys crutch more than one guy. She went around on the metro and dumped water bleach mix now on people's any wouldn't have been enough to just pour the water on the guys crotch and make it look on it to bleach. So it would stain their clothes and it would point out the she said, the symbol or the object of all the problems in society. I like the bleach. I think that that was a bridge too far. I think those kind of a funny prank up until she put this. She ruined their clothes because I can cross my legs tight as any woman. So. Yeah, I'm just putting it out there. Demand spread is not to like flash Dong-. The man spread is to keep strangers from sitting next to you. Yeah. Now, Danny, is this woman a hero or is this woman as a pariah alike? The man we're, we're both. Both people are, I guess some of these guys are sleeping in man's spreading started to go fund me for these guys. We might be able to raise smell no, no, no, no, no, no. First of all, everyone hold on and spreading was the original same? Yeah. Hold onto your money. No more. Go funds me for stupid shit like this. If you haven't learned from the Bob at story, the guy who gave his last twenty bucks John Wayne Bobbitt hundreds of thousands of dollars that the couple then took and spent on themselves, and now they're locked up in a legal battle over the money. Just save your money. Don't give it to this guy because you don't know what the money is going to him. And even if it is, you don't know what he's turning around and doing with it. Me they should pay into that. If I started put go fund me for us. There's no reason why we shouldn't just be given tens of thousands of dollars. It's like the money's probably going to be used for the same things as if you were to give it to a homeless person who's not gonna receive any of it is it's all going to his friends. I think that the story is is suspect. It could be. It could be fake news, the bleach story, she is known social. I don't know campaigner. She did a thing about thirty where she stood in the subway and lifting up her skirt to show her underwear to everybody to protest up skirting. So she's but it could still be a stunt, you know, perpetrate this is more of a kind of a stunt here. So yeah, but if you fall asleep on public transportation, you accidentally man spreads. Should you get bleached also? No. I mean, those guys should be thankful. He didn't get bleached at Dunkin donuts, look, man spreading 's. Okay. On the subway for men or what. Women up until the point where the car gets too crowded to afford one to man spread, and then you need to know the rules. I don't know. I don't know if it's okay. That's what I. That's what I think is fair. I'll be on the train later. I won't be doing it. I don't wanna get bleached. This is the problem..
