Washington Redskins retire nickname and logo Monday

"So rj was announced on Monday that the Washington now formerly redskins will be retiring their nickname and their logo. They started a thorough review early in the month, and they've decided they will be moving on no statement as of yet as to what the new nickname will be for the team so sometimes our job is to have unique takes, but let's be candid. You can't have a strong take on everything, but some people force those tags. We try to avoid that I'd rather identify the story point out a couple of things that maybe aren't being discussed enough and move on. I think it's noteworthy that amongst all the political correctness type, all things have changed. This is one that doesn't feel as much like that because I can remember in the eighties. This was a discussion. And Mean whatever decisions right or wrong, but it does mean this doesn't feel is new to me and obviously there's an. Accumulation of momentum when it comes to social justice and this is falling under that. But Joan is to I. Mean I'm guessing as far as you can. Fewer kids are playing tackle football due to social distancing requirements. It's led to a decreasing number of emergency room visits for kids with head injuries and now with the upcoming school year, doctors predict that declining trend will continue. As we re integrate through the next year. I suspect that there will be even lower participation and sports That require very close contact such as football. Dr Angela Luba Brown cares for Children and young adults clinically in the Stanford Pediatric Emergency Department, she says They used to see about three head injuries a day. Is that so often these days I mean if you get the casting, wrong and people don't. You don't believe that these people. Would fall for each other, but they also like aren't funny together. It doesn't work and any Sambergen Chris crossing million like work together, but I'm just more interested in. He hasn't had this many opportunities to do this. 'cause he's Kinda. Doing like more pure parity, and that's a nice thing about palm springs it is. It's a gentle. It's a great wedding parody. Feel you know you have like the insufferable a speech from the bridesmaid with the definitions? You know that's such was so smart. And that always happens God. I don't know whether you noticed it, but there's great just instagram parody in all of this, because the the like the pool floats and like the Sarah Characters wearing a bathing suit that is advertised today on Instagram, and like even Palm Springs, and that it's it's like very instagram aesthetic, which it's just like very gently mocking, and I think for a lot of us who have used too much instagram that can also feel like the same thing over and over again I'm just living in this virtual reality of pizza, floats and Burritos and people wearing short shorts and boots I and like why an Andy Sandberg. Remembering Carl Reiner, A Legendary Writer, Producer And Performer

"This is fresh air when Carl Reiner sitcom pilot starring him, his TV writer Rob Petrie was rejected by CBS producer Sheldon Leonard rescued it by persuading Reiner to replace the entire cast, including Reiner himself. The result. The Dick Van Dyke show was a major TV hit and made a star of its then unknown leading lady Mary Tyler Moore. Terry Gross spoke with her about the show and her TV character in 1995. What were you told about the character of Laura? Just that she was going to be a wife, a television wife, and that really had its classical parameters and dimensions that they were established. And they hardly ever varied except A Sze to whether or not the wife was the star of the show. In which case she was the funny one. Or if she were the straight man for the male star, and she was then totally supportive, but all these wives We're kind of obedient and you know, a representative of the vows to love, honor and obey. They hardly varied from that, and With with Carl Reiners character the way she was written, Laura actually had opinions of her own. While she was asserting herself. She also didn't make Dick Van Dyke look like a dummy. It was ah, a matter of two people. I mean, society's expectations of that point still said, Hey, wait a minute, lady. You only go so far here, but I think we broke new ground. And and that was helped by my insistence on wearing Pants. You know, jeans and and capri pants at the time because I said, I've I've seen all the other actresses, and they're always running the vacuum in these little flowered frocks with high heels on And I don't do that. And I don't know any of my friends to do that. So why don't we try to make this real and I'll dress on the show the way I do in real life, But it wasn't that easy. The sponsors were afraid you brazen right? They pointed specifically to if they used the term cupping under And I can only assume that that meant my you know my my seat that there was a little too much definition. And so they allowed me to continue to wear them in one episode. One scene per episode. And only after we check to make sure that there was a little cupping under as possible could coming under referring to the fit of your pants, the fit of the pants on my behind, right? But within a few weeks we were we were sneaking them into a few other scenes in every episode, and they were definitely cutting under and everyone thought it was great. The funny thing is, you know. Women liked me. They were not envious of the fact that their husbands had a crush on me. It was okay with them. They they were the first to know when I would meet people. They'd say My husband loves you so much. And he thinks you're so sexy. And this was it was not thing because they were also able to identify with me as a friend as a girlfriend. There was no resentment, no fear. Yeah, well, I think that that speaks so well for the character and your your portrayal of her. Did you do a lot of rehearsing with Dick Van Dyke? Or did you just have to do it? Minutes before the actual broken? The whole show was done in what they call multiple camera technique could still done today. But back then we were maybe the sixth or seventh show to use the technique. It began with Joan Davis, not Lucille Ball as everyone thinks John Davis did a show called I married Joan. What a girl! What a world What a life! Hey for you, and then Lucy and several other shows followed. But in that show it's a little like doing theater that's captured on film. You rehearsed for five days and then Ah, On the evening of the fifth day, the audience comes in and the camera's having blocked their moves in yours lined up with them. You film it from top to bottom in continuity. So during those five days, it was at least the 1st 3 days. It was very much a matter of rehearse. And contribute and attempt things and not be afraid to fail to make a fool of yourself. Just pick yourself up. And if it didn't happen this time, then the next time the experiment maybe it will Was a wonderfully supportive creative environment. Mary Tyler Moore, speaking to Terry Gross in 1995.

Coronavirus update: Fauci to testify on reopening schools

"Congressional hearing involving top medical experts is underway right now, and it's about getting people back to work and getting the kids back into school. We go to W. T. O. P's Mitchell Miller. On Capitol Hill for a live report. Mitch Joan, Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander, the Republican chairman of the Senate Health and Education Committee, began this hearing by urging President Trump too, at times where a mask the president has plenty of admirers. They would follow his lead. It would help end this political bait debate. The stakes are too high for this political debate about pro Trump anti trump mask to continue. The ranking Democrat on the committee, Washington's Patty Murray is sharply critical of the president's response to the crisis. The covert 19 response in our country is still a disaster, 100 and 26,000 lives lost. Alexander says the committee will be trying to determine what steps are needed for getting kids to safely return to school. The panel will hear from members of the White House Corona Virus Task force, including Dr Anthony Fauci, who has just begun his testimony

Defining Moments In Our Lives Where Fear And Courage Meet

"You so much for being with us on untangled today. We are just thrilled to have you here. Thank you so much wonderful summer day here in Santa Fe. Oh, that's awesome I wanted to start by asking you the question. I love the book. I read it this weekend. Just devoured it and wanted to understand what inspired you to write this particular book I've had the good fortune to be working in the end of life. Life Care Field, and in various other fields, including working with people corporations, working in humanitarian efforts working as a volunteer, the penitentiary system, working with educators, and it just been for fifty years, and I've had the opportunity to hear people who want to serve others who are engaged in service to others whether in education or medicine or law or business hearing them speak about the kinds of challenges. They experience in their work service to others. And it has been an extraordinary experience for me because one thinks that being a good person opening one's life to a world of service whether you're a doctor, a nurse, a lawyer and educator, or even a parent that this is work that is continually easy, but it's not necessarily a so, and so I began to look at the consistent patterns in relation to states that are considered to be virtuous like altruism or empathy or integrity and respect and engagement and discovered that. That there are shadow sides to these important human capacities, and that the shadow sides are often a source of great suffering, not only to those who are serving, but to those who are being served so I wrote the book I wrote the book in part because I also saw that the lever or the means of transforming the shadow side of these virtuous states is compassion, and so the last section of the book. It's you know is about compassion, yeah, and you. You just mentioned the edge states, and you talked about being at the edge can either gives us great potential for growth, or for suffering, depending on how we face our situations, and you also mentioned that like our toughest challenges can be our most valuable source of wisdom. I'm so curious about what is the difference between people who fall apart when they're challenged in these situations and the people who do become wiser, and who are able to grow. How do you think about? About that I don't know what the common feature is. Because what I've seen is that this potential for transformation exists within all of us and I think that's really important for all of us to understand that we all have this capacity to actually shift out of these conditions, and to that caused us so much suffering, and in the process of shifting to actually become stronger as a result of this transformation process. In my experience, it can happen to any kind of person. But that shift also involves as I said before opening up the experience of fundamental compassion, and when I talk about compassion, I'm speaking about this capacity to actually attend to our own experience into the experience of others as well as to have the intention to actually transform suffering and various other qualities, which I described in relation to compassion, but it's like in our day profundis in our deepest most difficult moments. This is where and Rebecca Sola talks about this. There is hope in the darkness. Mark Takano on running for office as a gay Asian man in the 1990s

"I WANNA. Take you back to when you first started running for office in the nineties. It was a time where your opponents would us open appeals to homophobia and smears against you, but then when you ran in twenty twelve, you one by quite a large margin, nearly twenty points What changed in the country in Riverside County, and for you personally in that time by nineteen, ninety four. I was taken very very seriously. I wasn't taken so seriously in Nineteen ninety-two. In addition, the incumbent, who just been elected in nineteen, ninety, two had gotten involved in a scandal. The sex scandal and in nineteen, ninety, four I would sweep the primary in June of that year. I'd raise more money actually than the incumbent at that point that that which reduce my of like. How grave it seems for the incumbent. The Republicans obviously were concerned. They used everything in their arsenal that they could including an accusation that I was gay it. It first surfaced with a very right wing senator state. Senator Than Right Haynes. He was at A. An event that had a bunch of religious leaders pastors in. He said to that group. I don't know about you, but I don't WanNa. Homosexual represented us in Washington DC. Mark Takano nutzoid. Liberal homosexual you know that became a little bit of an inside joke, and it never heard that insult before. A small small weekly paper. Picked up the story and that weekly article made its way back to Washington. DC and you can just imagine all the fax machines sort of. The Republican. National Congressional Campaign, committee the RNC was poly spread that that that story all all the way through the. There's venues in DC. Meanwhile the local daily press enterprise was now in a place where. They had to do a story. A state senator had had accused the congressional candidate who the nominee of being gay and the next. Sort of part of the story was to ask the question. Is it true? And so I actually knew the reporter. If you remember named Joan Radovich, I could tell she was not very comfortable. Asking the question is on the job. And you know, I did not answer straightforwardly. I was elliptical and Oblique and I said well. You know this is just my opponents way of of trying to evade the fact that he was on a car with a prostitute and tried to escape from the police. I didn't deny that I was gay I just didn't CEO yes, I am. As it turned out. That was only the beginning. Barney Frank. You know who reviewed this. The you know the situation with as well you know. The press is still looking at this from the point of view that that you've been accused of something shameful and that you've been smeared and that it's somehow. A bad thing to be a gay person. And we didn't really WANNA test being out and proud in that campaign and nightside before. That's wild. Because like you cannot, you cannot imagine the same kind of thing flying in today's climate which is i. think a great thing that shows how how far I think. Many Americans have gone that that I would hope that such a thing would not fly in the way that it was able to back then, but for you in that moment like you're young. Young in your career. How did your you know your very personal experience of deciding whether or not to come out and be out? Coincide with the unfolding of your of your political career like? Did you expect something like that to happen I did I did prepare myself that it could happen I consulted with my family, my mother and father, and I said you know. My mother was still hoping that it wasn't true that I was gay and said I. Don't think it's going to change and I want you and dad that now that this could become an issue and I don't want to go forward with running for office unless. You're okay with that possibility of happening so I had this little conversation with them they they both felt that I should go ahead and run. For whatever reason that was sort of an important thing for me to get out of the way. Wow, so just to make sure I have the story clear like where you publicly out at the time, and if not where you outed by your opponent at the time I would say I wasn't dating one. I wasn't in a relationship and I was kind of just. You know this young bachelor. In one, thousand, nine, hundred was never questioned because I was never i. think taken seriously as a candidate. In so nobody had to kind of try to shine a light on what was what was my Merrill existence in? I would say I was pretty discrete person, but I was. It wasn't a subject that my mother and father talked about a lot, but I did tell them early on that I thought it was gay, and they kind of had the attitude of well. You know, don't decide that yet.

Will My Supply Chain Survive COVID-19?

"The commercial aerospace supply chain is writing. The sudden collapse, the spring passenger air travel after the outbreak of the latest novel Corona Virus and it's cove in Nineteen, disease has upended fortunes in the airliner manufacturing industry. That matters because commercial aerospace is responsible for about three quarters of the whole aerospace and defense sectors business activity. Cash is king right now throughout the supply chain and companies are struggling to have enough liquidity, according to what several advisors and analysts tell aviation week. while. Liquidity is more of a function of the wider economic downturn inside aerospace. There are even bigger challenges. Where production rates were once being pushed higher now a Williams are slashing them cascading pressure down the supply chain. At the L. A. M. in the top tier level. It has probably never been more important to have insight into your supply chain. Joining me to talk about that need, and what to do about it are John Schmidt? The Global Andy Lead at Accenture and Joyce Klein. Accenture leader in applied intelligence in the North American amd practice John Joyce. Welcome back. Thanks might go good to be back so John let me start with you. It seems obvious that OEM's and tier ones want insight into their suppliers. But while that was always true, I used to be about making sure that there were no bottlenecks that slowed or stop record high production now things chain what of new conditions that demand and customers pay better attention to their supply chain. Might go and in many ways the aerospace industry you know has a clear split between the companies that are working in the Corso world, and does indefens- you in the commercial. As you say, you know the concern used to be, we have a supply constrained world with very predictable demand, right always pushing for more trying take need those increased rates pushed by Boeing and. and Airbus and in the current world that's changed dramatically to being more of a supply volatile with unpredictable demand in the defense and space side of things you know things have largely remained in a predictable demand with an increased supply chain volatility, so by just keep looking at those things, predictability and the the constraint or volatility the spy chain. That's where the primary differences. And Commercial. We know that demand is going to be directly related to the bounce back of commercial air travel and the relative rates airlines choose to bring back stored aircraft versus take more efficient models on order from the OEM's causing more volatility in and demand, variability and defense. It's a bit different again. Demand Israel remained and the supply chains been impacted by Kobe in some cases they're tier one two or three companies, who source both commercial and defense or trying to generate cash to cover expenses and other cases, local Cobra outbreaks, and our common actions are impacting the spires ability to deliver on schedule, known both cases, aerospace and defense companies need. To deal with all totally like never before whether commercial or defense. So Joyce. Last time John and I talked here on Chuck six with. He kind of gave me the peak and do some new technology you all were working on. It's a new capability to peer into the supply chain including using an algorithm approach that allows more predictive insight, potentially even the ability to hotspot. What factories might be in trouble in the future? Can you tell us a little bit about what accenture is working on? And how does this work? Yes, absolutely Michael Accenture? We've been working with our clients in the supply chain area for many years using analytics and machine learning. In fact, if you go back to last year's pariser show in our accenture shall a. we had a digital showcase. Demo that focused on intelligence supply chain, and what this demo is a together machine, learning and artificial intelligence, and we used I at supply chain Europe e data to really understand delivery delays identify missing parts. We also looked at the opportunity for Automation Muller. Doing now is we're bringing together? All Lot of data sets and we're using artificial intelligence to help companies deal with the increase in volatility manage. Manage uncertainty and really get at supplier resiliency. That's really the core of what our solution is all about now so for North, America a and D client what we've done is we've taken and artificial intelligence engine that uses the supplier Jadot and what we're trying to do. We're actually working to predict the number of days late or a particular part, and we're doing that by bringing together a supplier. Number roaches order number eleven worry day in quantity, combination you all that information, Heather actually identify the number of as laid the opulent part is going to be and so by knowing the number of days way them. What were able to do is fight and determine. Do I have enough inventory? As coverage or that? Particular part is ultimately if I Joan I need to make additional decisions around production, and so what? We've been able to do with our solution. Experience up to ten percent improvement apart availability production. And we're also able to change the role of the delivery service analyst. Previous lanes individuals really operating. All here. Allergy by getting parts then wall really. Burning that role inches, someone that now uses ena an ai a better and improve sagem around artists that are going to chase I which parts are actually GonNa come in on Hind. So is a big ship in

He'd run into sprints before that winning one this year and finishing fourth in his debut at Belmont Park last July and while his sire quality road one multiple graded stakes at a mile and an eighth doctor posts never wanted longer than seven eighths of a mile. So I'm pretty sure that when trainer Todd pletcher and owner Vincent Viola learned that the Belmont stakes would be shortened from a mile and a half to a mile and an eighth. Diving Deep with Melissa Joan Hart

"I would love to just kind of start off talking about. I mean you've kind of been in the limelight for most of your life. Now you've been behind a screen and I'd love to hear Maybe how that has affected you. Would you let your boys do acting if they wanted to get into it? Just kind of love to hear your story a little bit. You know the thing is. I didn't know any other childhood right. My childhood was I had a fairly normal childhood where I grew up with my parents siblings on a Dead End Street Long Island walking to school every morning riding my bike valet classes. Because my parents couldn't take me because were too many children in our house. and But I also auditioned ended. Theater ended commercials and stuff like that so I think it was a little bit short of the way anybody else would take take a hobby seriously if somebody was a major soccer player at school and doing really well with that or if someone was gymnast and be being pulled out of school at the time for certain events started Nowadays everyone does travel. I don't travel was a big thing when I was growing up. But like you know missing. School for work was kind of odd but it was what I knew and everyone else had a lot of questions about it and I got very embarrassed about that kind of thing but Yeah but time I was like thirteen I was on Clarisa or maybe fourteen but not a lot of people had cable so my my kind of well growing up I was known as the rice krispies girl I was known as the Arnold Bright Girl like all these commercials I would do. Or if someone's parents let them watch me on the equalizer or they happened to see me on Saturday night. Live or I let a bunch of girlfriends come see me play ones but most of the time when I was doing a lot of theatre in my early middle school days nobody knew I was doing big FYODOR. Nobody they just knew I was going out at night. They had no idea at I was I was doing. You know a big play with big names and all this other stuff so And then Clarisa happened and while I was on a TV show filming in Orlando. I wasn't in Hollywood. I wasn't going to Red Carpet. Wasn't part of the whole scene circuit and then the show is on cable wasn't like a lot of people had it until later so really that's show became popular very slowly. Nickelodeon knew that there was good numbers behind it but as far as being recognized on the street it happened and I was living in New York City where nobody looks at your face anyway. Often keeps going. You know once in a while I would get stopped on the street in my teen years and I'd be kind of like flabbergasted by it and annoyed by it was weird. I don't know them but they're pretending they know me you know and and then Sabrina happened. We moved to La. I was twenty you know and I was a little more prepared and ready for it and so you know I feel like in a sense. I had a pretty normal childhood. Really until ninth grade and then ninth grade but you know teen years or was weird anyway kind of happy to get out of the high school setting away from peer pressure. I had a few friends but didn't really have group and felt like feel like I belonged which I think a lot of middle schools do so when I was around adults and working I felt very safe. I felt very accepted as long as I was. Nice to everyone It didn't matter what I wore. What music I liked who I dated. None of the adults care about that. Yeah so I learned very quickly that like L. Like how middle schoolers. They're mean to me because I were the wrong shoes with my outfit or desma. Mahir read for a play or something you know. And I'm like you know these adults are just like just be dumping ass right like as long as I was nice and I think that's sort of why I learned very early to like on a sat like you. You WanNa be professionally one. Do Your job you Wanna hit your mark in. It doesn't matter if you're the star or not like everyone has to behave themselves in a certain way. You don't get to be a diva because your names the one on the idol in your face. The one they're using to promote it like doesn't am. I get you a few things but I like to whenever I use sort of diva behavior. It's only to benefit everybody

Don't Let This Crisis Go To Waste | Roshi Joan Halifax

"Our guest this week is definitely not arguing that the pandemic is a good thing but she also believes that we shouldn't let a good crisis go to waste as they sometimes say in politics. This is a wakeup call. She says a chance I to really take a beat and ask ourselves what actually matters. How do we want to do this? Life both individually and as a culture her name is Rashid. Joan Halifax PhD. She is She's this is our second appearance on the show. She is a major figure in the in the American Buddhist seen. She's a Buddhist teacher. As an priest anthropologist a pioneer in the field of end of life care. She's the founder Abbot and head teacher at. Up Institute ends then center in Santa Fe New Mexico. She was speaking to us from her bedroom. There for this podcast and her motto for this crisis as you will hear is strong back. Soft Front. Chill. Explain what that means and much more. Here we go. Joan Halifax Super High Dan. Where are you? I'm in my wife's closet. I could make a comment about that. I mean you're in a safe place. You can make any comment you want. I. I am in a safe place but I have to watch out about my comments broadcast out there. I feel a little embarrassed sometimes. Fair enough fair enough. Let me start with a question. That may historically pre-crisis was perfunctory question. But actually now is a very interesting question which is how are you well? I'm actually fine. I was fine pre-crisis and in the race in the middle of this thing. I'm feeling very fortunate to be sheltering with twenty four people at the center and having a strong practice and also having the opportunity to cook food for homeless people which is delivered safely and also the kind of zoom world which I was not particularly involved prior to the crisis talking to the vacuum on zoom. It is really kind of bizarre situation. But I'm getting more comfortable sharing the Dharma to the zoom space. So it sounds like you're doing fine but what are your observations about the state of the world? That's a small question. Well this podcast. You can answer for as long as you'd like yeah. I'm very interested in what is happening. I will say that I feel like I was born to be in the middle of this mess. It's kind of charnel. Ground a global charnel ground and I also an anthropologist and a former lifetime so it's just for me an incredible process that we're in where we're reflecting the aspects that have been written about in terms of what is right of passage. We're seeing it at a global level and I don't know what the outcome will be one of the things that glassman she taught me was to really sit with not knowing and we're in this experience of radical uncertainty right now. There's just no way that we can predict what the outcome of all this will be. You know although there are intimations from and others about the possibility of a pandemic but I think you know there's a kind of global oblivion that has been operational for a little bit too long suddenly. We've gotten this invisible wakeup call and it is fascinating and it is frightening. And it is compounded by the fact that literally millions of people are in social isolation and it is as I said an opportunity for us to look deeply at our lives on our lives in relationship to people who are less Economically could I say stable affluent and also to look the effects of our lives the environment? So you know as I said Dad. This is like a right of passage where we're in the first phase of that rite of passage and rites of passage were described by. Arnold Van. Hannah who was a Dutch ethnologist. Who wrote a very important book? In the Nineteen Twenties on rites of passage and it became the model that anthropologists mythologised used to actually look at the contours of transformation and transformational processes that individuals as well as cultures. Go through and Ben Hannah Fascinating. Enough identified the first phase of a rite of passage as separation. And we're in it. I mean our experience of social isolation is an absolute perfect conditions for us to withdraw from our ordinary lives. Our normal lives to be put into solitude so to speak and to not have access to others or to our habitual ways of living and consuming. That have been part of our lives forever. So we're in the phase of separation and then then describes the second phase and that phase is called the threshold experience and the world the word threshold. There's the same feeling and meaning as the word thrash and I feel like we are globally. Being thrashed economies are being thrashed the corporate world. Not so bad. Maybe that it's being thrashed but also people who live in communities of poverty material poverty. They are being thrashed and our racism is becoming much more visible and as well. I think we're at a time where we are. In a certain way seeing the dissolution of a how you could call it exactly but the dissolution of a world that has been built out of an unjust economy that has had profound environmental implications.

"It's there's always something else they would. I know somebody's Rockstar. They want to be a writer writer. They want to be a singer when people used to stop us on the street all the time and they would just embrace my dad and they'd say thank you for saving. My life hasn't happened anymore. The unlike that unfortunately we get down they would bend down to be as low as I am and they say. Do you know how important your daddy is to our life young lady and I thought that's what I wanted to be and I was always fascinated with the idea of disseminating information to help people. Unfortunately sometimes it takes us getting a cancer diagnosis or some other terrible diagnosis to really start concentrating. And reading voraciously about our health and the more. I read the more got enlightened and interested empowered and then the more I felt 'cause my by job on the surface to disseminate information. I just had to start sharing and then when I really started thinking about all the things that happened to women that are annoying. They're worrisome and as a matter of fact there they really are problematic and we need to pay attention to them but not just that drew you know it affects our psyche and affects how we feel about ourselves. And if we don't feel good about ourselves how do you go out and have happy fun religion? How are people supposed to relate to you so for me just as much as telling them how liberal works? The pancreas works. I wanted to talk to them about happiness about that pivot point because to me. This is the silver lining of aging that pivot point. Where you kind of exile? You'll look back and you say come on give yourself a little pat on the back for a life. Well lived for all those crises that you navigated along the way. Let Gov all the stuff that never mattered anyway because this lets you kind of make that pivot and say well. I got the second chance like how do I WANNA be remembered? I could start working on that today. I have decades to work on it. Happiness research to show that over about fifty five people start to a happy end of their happiest stages of life. It's just these all these other issues get in the way of that really being sustainable right all these other health issues. And Lo Whatever. The other issues related to hormonal imbalances. It's it's a point. We'll take your three points on aging which has purpose it's number one staying engaged in light number two social connections much purpose and social purpose absolutely. Yeah people that's when they kinda come round goal. I want to make a difference. I WanNa do something and make a difference in the difficult thing that I've noticed I've said this before on this particular podcast that people forget. Is that really to make a difference. You've gotta I develop a skill set and wisdom. Which is what you're doing. Would you say you read all this stuff and you develop a now? You're ready to give it back now. You're making absolutely and it's so much fun and I try to say like the water's fine. Everybody come in like you know if they only would like open themselves up to try new things and and saying you know maybe because that maybe diet enjoy that and start looking for things you're interested in. Here's something I need to understand about Joan London. Nine kids seven kids. Come on the big difference. It's all incomprehensible to me. I three and that's like saturation but I did mine. I had three daughters while I was working at good morning America and if anyone ever thought that could get any harder than I remarried and I had two sets of twins twenty months apart card where we working fulltime then I was working. All the time was the surrogate should say okay but still. I mean we would. We would put those four little babes in this extra long bath tub. We had built in a bathroom off the family room and two twins. They're twenty months apart so they're freshman freshman junior now all in high school and now we're at the point where they all just roll their eyes at you if you try to.

"Welcome you back for our spring season and we're kicking it off with a two part series on none other than the at -rageous talented comedian. Joan Rivers Joan rivers career spanned nearly six decades she started with cabaret and off Broadway shows in the late fifties and then became a star of late night television hosting the tonight show and the late show with Joan rivers and eventually the daytime Joan rivers show in the nineties. She was best known for her comedic and sometimes mean-spirited interviews with celebrities on the Red Carpet John. Style was self deprecating abrasive. Everyone was fair game including herself. She charted new territory and comedy by telling stories from her own life combined with her willingness to talk about taboo subjects like hot flashes sagging bodies bad sex and marriage problems. You may have noticed that we borrowed our podcast. Name can talk from this hilarious. Talented and complex Jewish woman. Can we talk? Was Jones signature. Tagline sometime. She's it as a punchline. Sometimes it was a setup. It was an invitation to her audience. A signal that she was about to confide in them. Here's Joan on the show in the early. Nineteen Eighty S. I would not cheat. I would not cheek Maine because nobody asked me but I not because I think why we talk. I think my husband's spooner man okay. Which is very hard to save. I feel very close to you. I especially if you can. We talk was also Jones way of calling attention to her flaws and other people's her way of saying let's stop pretending and tell the truth here. Can we talk? Let me tell you something. The reason I have nothing happy the way I'm blessed is because I'm getting older at least seven very drop because Oh oh you don't know what it's like to get older too. You know what it's like to go in the morning to take facial mask and realize you're not wearing what so. Why did we borrow her? Tigon FOR OUR PODCAST. When we started the show Joan had recently died and we were all steeped in the debate about her role and her complicated legacy as brilliant and hilarious. But also crass and sometimes cruel. We love that. She had so many dimensions and that she believed in telling the truth about women's lives and expanding the range of models. We see all things we knew we wanted to do to. We also liked that. Can we talk was an invitation to our audience to join us in this project of storytelling and with that. Here's a wonderful interview from J W as archive recorded in two thousand six for our documentary. Jewish women in comedy making trouble. Joan talks about her early days at the Chicago. Comedy Clubs Second City being a woman on Johnny Carson's tonight show and playing midwestern clubs as New York Jewish comic later in the interview. She talks about going back to work after her husband's suicide in nineteen eighty seven. She starts by telling Interviewer Rachel. Talbot about a fight. She had with her parents over her decision to go into comedy. I left my house in pedal pushes enter old car that I used to drive and went to New York in speaking of the year and it was just awful and my dad wrote me a letter say that we are going to You'd better come home or we're going to have you committed. I was living in the bars on hotel for women and my dad wanted says and pulled me out. It was a scene. I think they ever forgot dragged me out. It was just horrible scene Harles. They just thought I was really life as though question about it. They just couldn't accept that. This is where I was going to end. This is all I could do so the I went back home and then I went away. Yeah it was just awful and then Pity yes that was great. Second City was very competitive. It was six of US thrown on stage. And it was make up your own lines and get your own scenes going and everybody wanted to be the star second city and everybody wants to get their stuff and so it wasn't like being gracious. It was like I got a better idea I wanted. It was very competitive and that was great too. I learnt in second city. You have to talk up and I learnt the freedom of you. Think it's funny try it. Don't wait don't think about it. I still do that if freed me. It taught me to be tough. It taught me to fight. If you thought you're Si was good you went into four four and a taught me co with your instinct. Only do what you truly think is going to be funny. It changed my life and then you you came back to New York Nissan. You learn so much from second cities are how had your comic persona change came. When I came back with second city I was myself onstage. Good bed or different. I was what I was and I was a divorced when no Jewish smart college graduate not particularly attractive girl on stage and I was telling you about my life. It wasn't about my mother-in-law was about what I'm going through my mother's hysterical because I'm single and I'm having an affair with a married man and my gay friends. What happen to my gay friends and it was all about truth. The first routine that really worked. I had a WIG hairpieces. I was driving into New York to perform at this club. And the WIG flew out of the window and a car drove over it and I said there I was walking on the west side highway. With a dead Wigan my arms had says firestone on and no one stops and all the truth and taking the truth and exaggerated and it just opened me up. I never went back. I never went back to. He's so fat that unless I really believe when did you find out Johnny Carson? Nothing in my career. I think that's why I was that you log come easily ever. I've never been the first on anything all my friends. And that time I was working the village with my George Carlin and Richard. Pryor all these wonderful men everybody got through everybody was on Carson and on Griffin and I was brought up seven different times to the Carson show. I was finally rejected by Secretary. Who is eating lunch while I was performing? I mean beyond humiliating. I got on because the night before some comic bom so they called me up and they said you can come on but not as a comedian. They had no faith in me. They brought me on as a girl writer and at the end of the show at the end of that night on air. Johnny Carson said to me you're going to be a star it was maisy and I look behind me. I couldn't believe and the next day. My life change changed overnight. They were getting all these calls and stuff. Was there ever a feeling of like? Oh you're to New York reports. I was doing costume regularly. I don't think it was hosting really I was you know the Golden Girl Carson and the ages come back and say you to New York to Jewish you to New York and my husband was married by that point. Ed You said this is ridiculous. He said picked the worst city in the country. And they said Milwaukee they still have been meetings. This is nine hundred seventy. There's still enclaves. They dress up Nazi uniforms and saw Adolf stand. He said center Milwaukee. And let's see and they sent me to Milwaukee and I was. They had to change the size of the room and put in the ballroom. Our I put originally in a little hotel the pfister in their little comedy room and they had to over the ball and put me in so that changed everything they said. Okay America will get her. I mean people begin to put little pockets and it's so stupid because funny is funny. You're minutes was using back on state. What was that decision? The decision was very simple. One I know money I had to go back to work. I didn't have the luxury of being the widow in the house on the hill so I had to go back to and nobody wanted me and Vegas gave me back my contracts. 'cause isn't nobody wants to see anybody that has that kind of you would just fired. would terrible glistening one out that. I was very hard to work with It was just all wrong all wrong. I was banned from late night. I've never been brought back ever not one late night show So I was really struggling my career and I had all these bills. Listen was in. It was just a bad time so I went back to little nightclubs. I said well I'll start again. I went back and started doing little like us and out of that came the red carpet which I only went on because nobody else.

"Day. The Lancaster bombers the six seventeen air squadron squadrons flew in orbits eight miles long and two miles wide slowly. Moving Southeast at eight knots to Mimic and ocean convoy and according to an account given given to the Royal Air Force in May two thousand nineteen by wing commander John Bell M B E. Who is part of this mission quote? While they were flying there were two aircrew in the rear of each Lancaster. CASTER and I was one of them. We were handed bundles of Aluminum Strip which we dropped at approximately three second intervals through the flare shoot. The strips varied in size and went from small to large as we approached the French coast and large to small when we turned back to the English coast a green light indicated when it was time to throw it. The efforts of the six hundred seventeenth air squadron were part of what was called Operation Taxable which played out along the French coast near Cop Donte Fair a second operation in which made use of window known as Operation Glimmer made it look as though there was an allied force crossing a narrow point of the English Channel for glimmer. That two hundred eighteen team squadron was tasked with dropping the chaff and the deception also included a faint. That made it appear that a massive groundforce was moving toward pas-de-calais to to provide additional support for this ruse dummy parachutists were dropped southwest of and King in a segment of the plan called operation. Titanic all of these efforts combined worked as the allies hoped. The Germans could not get a correct analysis of enemy troop movements and even into the following month. There was still confusion about whether there was a large groundforce near the city of Calais. Also in June of nineteen forty. Four Salmon Joan Curran were invited to the University of California at Berkeley to work on the Manhattan Hatton project which they accepted. It was during this time that the pair worked on the development of a simulation counter to measure the ionization of radiation. While Samuel current is given credit for this invention which is still used today he consistently noted his wife's work on the project and during their time in California the Currents Had Their First Child oiled and their daughter was born with an intellectual or cognitive disability. The exact nature of her disability is unclear from the readily available information but after the war came to a close the curtains moved back to the UK. Where Sam had been offered a position at Glasgow University and they had three more children after they returned to Europe? All of which were sons Though her work with the war effort was done. Joan was hardly idle from this point in nineteen fifty four. She and Sam with four other couples with the goal of setting up an organization. Jose Shen to assist parents of children with learning disabilities. After the first meeting they printed a notice in the paper and biting people to an open meeting and more than three hundred people attended. This was the beginning of the Scottish Association of Parents of Handicapped Children which is an organization that still exists although its name has evolved hoped to be enabled Scotland which is a support and advocacy group. Joan Curran continued to work in support of people with disabilities throughout her lifetime. Her close ties is to academia led her to advocate on behalf of students with disabilities and work with the Council for Access for the disabled. Both Sam and Joan were really outspoken. Proponents the idea that education was something that should be available to everyone and this work that she did was one way in which she carried out that mission. She also served on Greater Glasgow L. Health Board and was part of the Scottish Special Housing Association. At the end of the nineteen fifties. Sam became principal of the Royal College of Science and Technology which gained its Royal Charter and became the University of Strathclyde under his leadership. During this time Joan founded and served as president of the Strathclyde Women's group she also also established the Lady Current Endowment Fund for overseas students in nineteen eighty seven at the age of seventy one. Joan was finally granted an honorary doctorate the University of Strathclyde. So finally she got her physics. Degree Samuel Curran died on February Fifteenth Nineteen Ninety eight a plaque was installed in his honor in Baruni Hall a Victorian Gothic Church at Strathclyde Joan unveiled the plaque and ceremony. Although she herself was terminally ill at the time at the event she he was told that a walled garden at the Ross priory also part of Strathclyde was to be named after her with the Joan Curran Summer House to be built. Their Joan Curran died less less than a year after her husband on February tenth nineteen ninety nine and she never had any of her work published by her contributions to the war effort science and her community were recounted over and over and habitue aries her obituary in the Scotland Herald opened with the paragraph quote. It is difficult to separate the lives of Joan and Sam Curran. And although they were a very different temperaments they made a superb team and partnership and were devoted to each other nevertheless it is very important and Sam always emphasized sized this to know that she was a considerable scientist in her own right and in the dark days of the Second World War. She as did Sam played an important part in the survival. All of this country politician Tim. Daniel wrote an account of his first meeting with Reginald Jones That person that had spearheaded the window project and in that conversation Sation Jones told him quote. In my opinion Joan Curran made an even greater contribution to victory in nineteen forty-five than Sam. She's pretty incredible. It it is and it's one of those things I'm glad there have been some efforts in both Wales and Scotland last probably five to eight years of people who are pointing out like this is a person that we should be recognizing more than we do and I love that they're doing that makes me happy. I have so much listener. Mail L. O.. Well we've just come off of the holidays and we are lucky enough to often get some really really lovely Cards from various S. listeners. Thank you for all the wonderful work you do on the podcast. I'm always rooting for more episodes. In the history of science piece exploration and women in stem. Yes so it's this cool kind of snap snap together orbiter model that you can make and it comes in a postcard in. It's really cool and I love it. I also will echo her thing. If if you ever get to go see any of these marvelous orbiters please do it If you go to Kennedy and you see the Atlantis intas on display. Aw like when I look at things like the James Webb space telescope or any of the space shuttle's Cetera is that to me. What makes them beautiful is that they are the best of us? Those are a lot of different people from different backgrounds. "Brought it was a woman brought her backstage. I said first of all. She's fine fine and she's thinner and I probably so just lost four pounds so jealous and then we just went on. But it's you never know what's going to have a live show now. The film explores among other things. Your relationship with your daughter Melissa when she was young. And you were establishing yourself in show business. Did you have a conflict between career and motherhood which so many women go through now. Trying to balance wants the two but not that many women were going through it. When you were Chris? Many more women were full-time mothers and homemakers. Then I did something from the very beginning because I've been sitting when I was pregnant with a very famous comedian and a little girl who was in the park mark and a little girl fell down and cut her knee and ran to the nanny. And I said right then and then my child will run to me and I from the beginning. We stopped everything at six o'clock We always had a family. Didn't even we went out afterwards. It had another dinner with friends. Everything stopped at six. I was Brownie scout mother in those uniform. You don't know what I sacrificed uh-huh my daughter. I mean Terry please Jewish woman in a khaki dress not not no I think I was as good a working mother as you can possibly be. I was also lucky. I was in a position where I could take my daughter. Go to work when I was on Broadway. Melissa sat in addressing which he talks about and she would color and crown in the dressing room and she talks about that no such fond memories. She talks about growing up backstage in Vegas where sitting on a stool. We sat on a stool right off stage and wish you could watch me in every night. Jews allowed to re write one joke that I would say on the stage no matter how terrible the joke or and so she was always included included totally include as much as I could but I also had to make a living in the movie. I think it's you who said I'm tournament whether you say it or somebody says I think you say that you are perceived as an advocate for plastic surgery than the poster girl and then the joke. Yeah when did it cross over into joke Probably my first banned plastic surgery Probably I when I talked about it too much. I should have been like everybody else and not said a word and And Deny it. So why did you do. I talked about the very beginning but I'm a a comedian. So of course you walk on stage and say I just had my is down and let me tell you Dr Blah Blah Blah Blah and you start doing jokes and it was in those days shock to talk about it like everything else. Things have evolved and that was a very shocking thing to discuss. And then it became mm-hmm 'cause I dragged read. Some people thought that's all I did. I was very glad I talked about it. It goes back to what we started out talking about. Which is by talk talk about it? Maybe there's some woman somewhere North Dakota who hates her nose and she's shy get it fixed off friends align during saying don't do it betty and I'm saying betty to it going to feel better about yourself. Rich great marriage was madly in love with some thump thump thump thumping no but as my mother always said they should like like you more than you like them so it was he dumpy frumpy over you. Is that what you're saying. Yeah oh he throws a cutest Jiechi walking around but he had very bad eyesight so I think most people know that you know he. He took his life after killer. Yeah F F in this was not long like a few months after your late night show which he was producing on Fox was cancelled and apparently the network asked him to leave. You oppose that and then they'll show got cancelled and you in the movie so that you blame Fox for totally for his death but I I'm wondering if maybe he wasn't like depressed before that. And if maybe depression in co `interfering with his relationship with the network and if it all your tap app dancing everything is wonderful and something bad happens. You'RE NOT GONNA kill yourself. But this was the big thing and he was producing the show and they said to me You can say he can go history go and he I have a choice on a Thursday. I said no Then I go with my husband and we're off on Friday any annuity to my career so he had not only gotten us out of a job. my whole career was smashed. Everything everything was just very very bad and it had a major heart attack and he had a four way bypass and it was coming out of that and he was impressed over that and he just couldn't continue couldn't do it in the movie. You say that he left you high and dry and left auto debts because he wasn't a good businessman. Yeah so it sounds like you. Were you know horrified. that he killed himself but also angry with them beyond angry. Still Angry I. I work very hard for suicide survivors with suicides of ours as Missy Chris what it does to you. The anger never leaves you. There's sadness sadness that on we that sets in that You know and Melissa Walk down the aisle and it was ten years after her father kills. We both cried because Daddy Eddie was there walker down. I mean you never get over that missing that part of it But you still so furious what you did to us what you did your daughter. The selfishness of a suicide. What you've done you've just left all the pieces and gone John? You took the easy way and it's not an easy. They're very brave to do it. But it's a terrible terrible terrible thing what it does to family terrible thing. What does family do you feel like it it? It sends a knowing message to the family. It sends a bad message of family but it sends a lot of jokes. Mommy's a comedian right. Yeah my I joke was my husband killed himself and left a message that I have to visit him every day so I had him cremated in sprinkled him uneven. Marcus having list today and that's why get through life. Do you think of something like that. "Joan Joan button on bass got Joan Corey on keyboards. That's the line that we need to do Quadrophenia because there's so much music instrumentation in need that we've been getting reviews. Good as anything we ever go in the seventies. Which I'm so proud of to be this. I know that you're still delivering it in the right way. I'm going to name three songs out of the countless songs you sang. And you tell me was it easier hard for you to sing the soccer them curious about something. That's really ripping cut of the letter. So to sing see me, filming a piece of cake is came. Yeah. Yeah. Absolut- easy as anything easy easy. Went back to. Bob, love Raynor me. That was really really easy incredibly. Painful to hear. Pete's remark. When he first heard it. I don't like it. Why he didn't like it? He didn't hear the same way. I see is getting talking about earlier how I would interpret he's very differently. Sometimes the that he kind of wrote them an e he wrote is this gentle love song. He. I this is the law so on the album. Songs you rip it in the end just needed to be promo. It was you know, it needed to be out to into spice. So I did end in the I do any hacia eating actual kind of that that the time and hurt too because she said it quite bit in the press Tien. So that was kind of weird, but he quickly. Still carried on singing it that way. Did it affect your choice of song you sang that you got the talked into or you even talked yourself into singing a certain way, and you didn't like it. And it turned out to be a great hit happy. Jank. He was a hit record. I couldn't cook. Could not believe it. I just could this records. I it regular. I just ever heard it one of the few ones that I kind of when we start to revisit hits. Forget that one. And over the years you did or did not do much songwriting with him. And he did he do an no I, you know, a few songs sung Roger in the caliber of Pete Townsend. I wrote anyway anyhow way with him. But that was it. I've written songs of my own, you know, but who you left to him. Well. When you're on such a big fan of his fan and the more heavies Ryan in these head the other stuff become fair. You know, you probably screw it up. But I'll never forget you guys went on tour in the US, and they put you I think it was on the cover of Newsweek, and I do believe sometimes I don't trust my memory anymore. But I do believe I'm precise in this one which you had one of my favorite lines of all time you and they quoted you saying you said, nobody writes songs like Pete. And no one sings Pete songs like. That's the definition of the. When I was a kid. I thought to myself I was like a little young forget how old I was any band that puts an album that with song on a a quick one while he's away. But I gotta meet this band. Had had a song code a quick one. While he's away would play too. Young people have ever twelve thirty. The name of the book is thanks a lot.
