NFL Will Likely Allow Players To Protest During National Anthem

"Now that the NFL has accepted? Accepted at least at the surface, how NFL players choose to protest police, brutality and racial inequality bird. You see this going essentially I. Guess the question is what's the next step to keep the momentum of this movement going while they have it well in terms of how players are GonNa? Protest protest has to be defiant in some way to be some level of disobedience associated with it and now the Dell. Dell has kinda like okay'd the action of kneeling or just protesting in general like we're getting into a tricky space it's it's then kneeling might become with like throwing your sister me. Anthem has become. It was a very. That was a very different gesture in nineteen, sixty eight. It's not so much a controversial gesture, twenty twenty, or maybe even twenty eighteen, whatever, if kneeling was controversial, Tony Sixteen but is. Generally accepted across the League twenty twenty. Then you're not really protesting. You know anymore and that's. That's important here because we still have people. Who Need to be allies and when I say people, I really do mean the owners. The owners are some of the powerful people perspective states you know like how many people can you name in Texas more powerful? Jerry Jones for a if he's on board. That gets a lot of people on board or it enough people. That are that are Jerry's fans like okay. Cool them battle-gear, but if you know how many people over there, Massachusetts, or more power more powerful than than Bob, kraft right like this. Won't we get those guys on board? Right as allies. That's when we really will get some like after like a true like seismic shift here because that's the people they know prosecutors in their local, you know. States, cities know DA's in they. They know politicians like they. They got power over their. Their voice matters what Robert Kraft says. When a Mike is far more important than some like vague statement on the Patriots Twitter Account, you know I think that's that's the next step here. Owners are owners are good at this. They don't make themselves available might just head coach swing. Put the pressure on head coaches. No, it's not just the coaches. We need to put the pressure on the owners. You guys of the white billionaires. Who Some of you even supported the president. was empowering a lot of the people that still countering backlash. Matter like it's the next step is them. It's getting them to be all in in on this. Because essentially they become recruiters at that point. Can Jerry onboard and you didn't in your in your far right and even riding with Jerry Johnson. Baby if you can, if you can't see why Jerry, Jones gets on board, then you're.

"If that is your preferred outlet now Look the Ocho is a daily podcast. You know we give you kind of the latest headlines in cowboys land and sometimes got a record a little bit earlier and you know gotta just for life and whatnot. And so we recorded Tuesday's episode before the Libron News and look the last dance finished airing on Sunday. Something that Tony and I talked about with Charles Haley and I think a lot of people that follow the NBA closely. We're waiting for how Lebron would respond to you know potentially try to Put some attention back on on him. I don't know just these are things people have said and on you know on Monday night are excuse me. Monday night Time is just you time on Monday night. Lebron was online on uninterrupted Kind of talking about you know a variety of things and obviously the NBA's suspended right now and talked about the two thousand eleven NBA lockout. And how at the time of it? He was considering just alternative options. And obviously everybody knows. Lebron James Played football in high school and was very good and then ultimately went to the NBA and became one of the greatest players of all time. And he's talked about how he's had some dreams before etc and Maverick Carter. Who's very close to Lebron said? Something very interesting at the end of the interview and Well Watch just check it out for yourself. Not but I know. He got a contract from Jerry. Jones that he framed and putting his off so Jerry Jones. Apparently I don't know if we can say offered Lebron contract or gave Lebron contract But at the very least Lebron James Seemingly according to Maverick Carter has a contract from Jerry. Jones framed in his office now for four context. Here Lebron is a very huge cowboys. Fan Very very public cowboys. Fan Very famous cowboys fan. Obviously and he's been on the sideline at. At and T. Stadium we put some social images up on our social channels With some of the more famous photos of Lebron in a cowboys cap and whatnot. And so maybe that was more ceremonial than anything. I just I don't really think that There was legitimacy to Jerry Jones giving or offering Lebron contract or just kind of seemed like This'll be cool type thing but for what it's worth. This was the two thousand eleven. Nba Lockout. You might remember that very well. And The Dallas Cowboys. Pass catchers wide receivers and tight ends of prominence in two thousand eleven. A lot of people have suggests that if Lebron did play in the NFL it would be as some sort of tight end. Potentially this the cowboys are working with. If you know if you think maybe Lebron could have been part of that crew Dez Bryant and for what it's worth two thousand eleven Dez more season as this was pre blow up Dez. All right does really stormed onto the scene in the second half of two thousand twelve really kept it up through two thousand thirteen and then two thousand fourteen was sort of the peak of Dez Bryant at his powers so two thousand eleven days was not the Dez. You're thinking of Miles Austin in two thousand eleven The two thousand eleven version of Miles Austin is the one that lost the ball in the lights against the New York giants on December eleventh. We talked about that last year with that Valentine not fun. Times Laurent Robinson. Oh yeah that's right baby Laurent Robinson who got posed nude by the Jacksonville. Jaguars Kevin Tree and And Jesse Hawley rounds out the wide receiver group for the two thousand Eleven Dallas Cowboys of course at tight end Jason. Witten part of that. Rotation really kind of just the rotation and then Martellus Bennett. Who could ever forget Mardi? Btv and John Phillips so I don't know if and I know that we're not in the weeds but we're into a really deep hypothetical at this point but the point is if the cowboys could not properly utilize Martellus Bennett. I don't know how they would have utilized even Lebron James but it would have been cool. It would have been fun So whatever value putting that. Hey you know a good good for Lebron. I suppose that would have been cool. I think that would have been interesting at very least certainly had Lebron James Become a member of the Dallas cowboys but Yeah it is what it is but I don't know if he would have been starter right. Maybe not probably not definitely not and It is the time of year were different outlets are putting together Starting not really starting but predicted starter. Lists we're starting to see that kind of pop up all the national outlets starting to put the predicted starters for every team and obviously that includes the Dallas cowboys. Now we wrote about this. It'd be TB NFL DOT coms list projected starter for the Dallas cowboys. Of course all the obvious ones Dak. Prescott Zeke Elliott Amari Cooper Michael..

Cowboys may use both tags on Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper

"The final year specifies that each of the NFL's thirty two teams can use both the franchise and transition tags this particular offseason that historic guarantee. If you don't know what that is you know franchise in transition tags in general I mean we. We have all sorts of information if you really want to understand the depths of them but in general the franchise and transition tag are ways that NFL teams can protect players that are set to be free agents. If you don't WanNA player to hit free agency you don't want me hit the open market. Bam you slapped a franchise or transition tag on them and typically generally only one is available to each NFL team so you have to pick which player you want to place a franchise tag on right or transition. Whatever the movie and so the fact that all. Nfl teams would be able to utilize both of them. This offseason really served as an incredible asset for the cowboys wrote about this last year. We wrote about this in March. Nineteen how we talked about then. Hey next offseason. The cowboys could have this really awesome tidbit in the that was the title of the article. That could really help them. Because of the cowboys find themselves in a position and we we kind of forecast this year ago where they have three big players that new contract extensions that are set to be true free agents Dak Prescott Amari Cooper and Byron Jones. You knew that and so while you can shake combination however you want in all likelihood the Dallas cowboys were going to Franchise Tag Prescott because it seems incredibly unlikely that deal done before that happens. Before the franchise tag deadline and then they were going to place the transition tag on either Amari Cooper or Byron Jones. Whoever you believe more likely personally I believe it was Amari Cooper but that would prevent both of those players from hitting the open market. Which means the cowboys could protect them. That's a big deal in. It seems like in this again. My personal opinion and and other people it'd be to share these thoughts and certainly a lot of our readers and commenters and listeners but a lot of people had kind of sort of made the assumption that the cowboys have accepted that they're going to lose Byron Jones. And you know what I think. I think I speak for all of us. That are listening. Here we're all gathered around the campfire. You know what if the cowboys is Byron? Jones not ideal but at least they have Dakhil these they have. They can figure this out. Maybe they spend their first round. Pick on cornerback. Whatever not trying to get to far into those weeds but the ability to keep both deck and Amari was and is a gigantic advantage. That the cowboys have going for them. How ever if a new collective bargaining agreement is reached in so far again at the time of this recording. We have the half that the owners have to comply with if a new collective bargaining agreement is reached it will essentially rendered the ability for teams to use both tags moot and they will revert to normal circumstances where there can only place one tag on one player. Now if you have not out by now you need to know that this hypothetical world which is I would say somewhat imminent in somewhat inevitable based on the rates that the collective bargaining agreement is happening and again as we sit on Thursday night. There's so many players kind of tweeting that they don't like the new. Cba proposal and whatnot so there could be some back and forth but if this is finalized before free agency and there's still a couple of weeks and those are going to be very important weeks then. Dak Prescott has all of the leverage in the world and all of the leverage in the world and we touched on this at the end of Thursday's episode because if that's the case and you and I were representing Dak Prescott. Then guess. What our point in our proposal to Jerry Jones Stephen Jones in the cowboys organization? Hey Dude if you don't if you don't get a deal done with us if you don't give deck all the money's basically you're going to have to tag them we all know that and if you tag back guess what you cannot tag anybody else if you tag back. Guess what. Amari Cooper and Byron Jones are going to be true free agents. You're going to be competing with the market for them. That is not ideal and other cowboys went from a world where they were probably going to lose one of the two. Probably going to be Byron Jones right to now that could potentially lose both of them which which would be a complete and utter disaster. And you know you can. You can play hindsight's twenty twenty but if the cowboys had just up to their contract offer to Dak Prescott Uruguay. I mean. We're talking thirty. Three thirty four million dollars per year. Everybody freaked out about that last year. That would look like such a bargain out. That's what happens with these deals. We've talked about that Matt Ryan to use thirty million dollars annually. Everybody freaked out now. That looks super cheap. And if the cowboys had done that they would have the ability to use the franchise tag on either Amari Cooper or Byron Jones win this ultimate sort of hypothetical becomes a reality and they would theoretically only lose one. Maybe not even either. So now the cowboys win till the eleventh hour is going to cost them in a literal financial sense where they're gonNA have to pay Dak Prescott more money and it could cost them in the capacity that they are now going to lose Byron Jones. And maybe even Amari Cooper now I should say that there is a a ray of hope. I suppose because you know look you may think this and I don't mean new but I mean I mean other person the other person here my think Jerry Jones is just. You know the cowboys. They don't know what they're doing. They're messing up. But there is a possibility. Because Jerry Jones is typically a big proponent for things like this the specialty. Nfl adding another wildcard round and round and other wildcard teams. A seventeenth game that is upping the value for every NFL owner. Jerry Jones is obviously very involved when I was on. Espn San Antonio on Thursday. We head John Maclean from the Houston Chronicle legendary. Nfl reporter one of the best. Ever do it and I John. I said look you know. Is it possible? The Jerry Jones kind of knew that this was coming that he was going to lose his ability to use both tags and somewhat prepared. Here's John Maclean said on. Espn Antonio John. You mentioned the The franchise transition tag loophole. That may be filled up and unavailable to the cowboys. Now maybe I'm giving Jerry Jones and co a little bit too much of the benefit of the doubt here. But in your estimation do you think that they you know Jerry Jones at least and we don't know the way the votes win but that he would seemingly be at the very least somewhat in support of this which would negate the ability to tag to players if he did not have a plan in place to at the very least keep one or two of these. You know high price three free agents. They have Adak Amari. I'm Byron Jones before the Franchise. Tag deadline that that's a great point. Jerry Jones. One of the movers and shakers in driving this agreement and even though it could hurt him. But I think Jerry all along you can't keep everybody I expect them to Cape Prescott and probably Cooper if Byron Jones those on the market. He's got a chance to be is defensive defensive back in yesterday I think teams are going to line up to give him a record-breaking deal. I don't think they would do that. With the Mario Cooper. There's too many good receivers. It's a great year for receivers coming out the draft. It's a good year for corners. If you don't mean Horn and the top after the first round so say they let Burne Jones go say the replacing with a cheaper free agent or they go after a corner in the draft and they can even train them they might have their pick of all of them no big deal John Maclean said it was a great point no big deal deal no big deal but anyway I think that if you're looking again if you're trying to be positive trying to be optimistic. I think there are two things to note one is that this is not probably not a surprise to cut the cowboys. Brass right like they had to have known that the collective bargaining agreement could be You know a a new one could be struck and therefore the ability that they were potentially leaning on to utilize both tags would be rendered moods and so they had to potentially be prepared for that. Maybe they all prepared for that. Maybe the preparedness is the preparedness to lose both Byron Jones in Amari Cooper. Who knows the other thing is that Adam schefter head tweet about this where he said Some something to the effect of if there's a new CBA expect a flurry of roster moves. And it's possible that you know we. We've heard so much about how different players in different guys and especially quarterbacks are awaiting the new CBA strike new contracts because they want a piece of whatever. The new percentages that players are going to get and whatnot and so we'll see so it also is possible that maybe the deal lanes right after the new. Cba struck because maybe DAX team is waiting for a new CBA to all to make their move. So who knows? But that's the positive side of things if you're trying to be positive so it is what it

Proposed federal law seeks to limit skyrocketing salaries of college coaches

"Well anyway. I I call one of your stories. He's just week. We're talking about salaries and congress trying to put a cap on things and you. Did I think a an amazing. I don't know how you doug all this up. A deep dive live into the evolution of coaching salaries. Take us through that process. Yeah I one of the one of the most interesting thing about college. Football is how in twenty twenty I guess in our in our myopic nature point twenty we think that we all have these like little arguments novel discussion Russia. We've been doing this thing for one hundred fifty years at this point in time there are quite a bit of things that just are not new and some of that is complaining about too many bowl games but another one of those things is talking about how coaching salaries are way too high. I mean it's it's it has quite literally almost almost always been like this. I mean Amos Alonzo Stagg at Chicago making six thousand dollars in eighteen eighteen ninety two now I went back and use the consumer price report and price some of these salaries out in you know twenty eighteen at the time buying power. And you know. That's six thousand dollars. Amazon does stag was making then was worth like a hundred and sixty thousand dollars back in eighteen. Ninety two there has always been this separation between what highly paid college. Football coaches made Versus what the Common Man Colombian mix. You know I'll I'll bring it to your audience and hit them home like bear Bryant when he's doing. Brian show that that famous Sunday highlight show That that became formative so formative for a lot of Alabama fans. He wasn't doing that just out of the good report he was because he was getting paid there Bryan getting in pay. That's why I thought he. I thought you said he was a benevolent. So I believe you remember this because you weren't born but he also had to Eat the potato chips and drink cocoa which by the way had bourbon in it. Yes absolutely I mean like bear. Bryant was Bear Bryant was cheering the back right now. Yeah so I find it amazing we we. We had a professor on earlier who who was very much a part of the Donna? Shalala Team Wanting to limit coaching Ching salaries so When did they make the big turn? When did they start going? I mean as as some of the critics say out of control to me. It really doesn't matter what any of these guys make but TAKE A. When was the big turn? I think they really and truly exploded in the nineteen eighties because in the nineteen eighties. That's when that Supreme Court hate happened with like Georgia Oklahoma and you know they got. TV rights You know they divorced the TV rights from the NCAA and schools colleges then became able to go. She ate television rights As entertaining defended themselves. Obviously than we get into the CFO era and BCS. And what we have now where the SEC. Disperse what was it. Six hundred and fifty some odd the million dollars yesterday give or take a few million yeah To all fourteen member schools. I mean look. The bedrock of this cannot be overstated. The bedrock bedrock of this is this when you as an Athletic Department at Florida Alabama at Lsu is Florida state when you do not have to pay your labor force when you do not have to compensate you or athletes. That money has to go somewhere now. That money goes to beyond coaching salaries. I mean that's the facilities race that is everything. Everything that makes these college will programs at opulent as they can be obviously a really really big part of the PIE now. Is Coaching salaries. Now Coaching coaching salaries the early eighties. That's stuff starts to get reported. That's my really really starts coming into Coming into the sport in a way that it had really really before that By the time you get through the mid nineties Florida's paying Steve Spurrier the one of the first billion dollar contracts so that he doesn't jump to the NFL at that time honestly the NFL itself explodes. You've got that competition. So it's it's the competition that that spurs in any industry the street Salaries and money and will lose those things but the early eighties. I think is where we can really pinpoint when college athletics kind of started growing up from a from a fiscal standpoint talking to Richard Johnson from a better society in now we all know what is going on. I'm interested where were you. Were you sit on this. Because the the so called Donna. Shalala proposal We heard Professor Ridpath on this would would curtail a lot of things I find find. It somewhat amusing chancellors and presidents at Private Schools More so than public schools making. I'm five six million dollars a year We have an offensive and defensive coordinator is making major seven figure salaries I know is a highly paid journalists. Where we're we're are you on what Shola is is attempting to to do at least down one lane in Congress right. I think you have a good point. the the facilities boom and the salary boom of coaches collect directors and the things that we coach Sports Mirror. That of what we see on the institutional side at a lot of these verses and I think that is one thing thing that really gets lost you know like you said like g Foreign President of like West Virginia. Like these guys make guys and girls make six figures seven figures. There is a lot of money in higher education in the United States at the highest levels. college athletics is it is not an outlander But like studies have shown time and time again going back thirty forty fifty years that when your football all team is good when your basketball team is good It becomes you know they always say that is the front porch of the university. Admissions skyrocket when athletics. Do well and that is. Why a lot of these University of course than anything else I think? Put Up with and we'll pay out the nose for Nick Sabin or Jim Harbaugh or a Davos. We or whatever I think the dirty secret is is the weight from Ro a lot of these endowments in some of these very popular. Schools would shrink a lot more than people wanNA realize. No I mean just look around. I mean boone pickens. She died recently. I mean the the amount of money that he put into Oklahoma state and I don't I don't mean to disparage Oklahoma state in stillwater Oklahoma. Oh my been there. And if you haven't Richard Make sure that you put that on your bucket list. Wouldn't it wouldn't have had that type of money And and a lot of these Jerry Jones. He's given to the University of Arkansas. You can go down the list And I mean and it's because of one thing we're trying to win in in in college football or basketball depending on on on where you live and what part of the country you're in. Yeah absolutely I saw a stew. MANDL's works in the for pretty athletic. He He has a college pat column and somebody asked him Ten million dollars. What would you do with it to build a staff? And I look the question and I was like look man if you WANNA compete with Alabama Lsu Clemson Oklahoma Ohio state. You need more your salary. You Pool has to be bigger than ten million dollars. I mean on on its face. You'RE GONNA have to pay a coach at that level. Five five and a half six six billion dollars. You'RE GONNA have to pay your coordinators eight hundred nine hundred thousand dollars because Dave Aranda was was pulling such a salaried Lsu a few atmosphere necessarily because he was such town defensive coordinator which he is but it was because one opinions coordinator so that the only job job they'll leave for is a G. Five or or power five kids coaching job. It's got bulletproof coordinators. I WANNA lose them. I don't want to take collateral. If they leave me they gotta take step up so okay. You're paying both your coordinators Like one point eight billion dollars between the two. That's like eight million dollars. Just gone to the head coach in coordinators. Now you're in another like five million dollars higher director staff your eight assistant coaches which is all right. That's your ten assistant coaches You want to compete with Georgia Alabama. All right we'll have a party because you have to fill out the rest of those staffs with analysts. We assist tense You know you gotTa have a staff of three saw guys kind of the shadow. Coaching staff that that Alabama kind of those famous or infamous. No matter how how are depending on which by the fence you went on but You know it takes money to keep up with the Joneses and it takes a lot of line really want we national championship. Always great to have you on Richard other than chicken. What's the what's the second most favorite food that you'll be serving the super bowl party Sunday lady a friend is bringing some guacamole? She'll be homemade guacamole. I'm not a big block fan but you know you know how this you gotta try say like it. So that'll that'll it'll be my My side dish. Dak Prescott’s contract is Cowboys’ “No. 1 priority” in offseason

"Dallas Cowboys have a new coach and have a quarterback today very much would like to keep his contract expires in March the haze in the barn he last played a game in late December week seventeen they didn't make it to the playoffs the rookie contract is over the injury risk has been fully and completely carried by dak Prescott that injury risk now ships over the cowboys and it will be part of the contracted that Prescott eventually gets and the more Jerry Jones and or Stephen Jones talk about the situation the more I realize that they have allowed themselves to be put over a barrel the likes of which we haven't seen since Joe Flacco became the Superbowl forty seven M. V. P. seven years ago it's been urgent for us Stephen Jones said Tuesday we certainly want to get that done that's our number one priority is to go to the off season is to hopefully find some resolution to it and get that done okay that's fine good do it it's not gonna be cheap here's why the contract is now based on the franchise tax and the franchise tag is in the neighborhood of twenty six million a year or at least twenty six million for this year and then it goes up by twenty percent for the next year and if the cowboys were to tag dak Prescott a third time it goes up forty four percent and that's the non exclusive franchise taxi the first decision they have to make is whether to use the non exclusive tag which would expose Prescott to an offer sheet that could be extended to him by another team and the cowboys would have five days to match and if they don't match it Prescott goes to a new team and the cowboys get two first round draft picks as compensation now would someone offer dak Prescott top of the market money and give up a pair of first round picks to get him good question there are more free agent quarterbacks than usual who are available in this cycle which would make a team less inclined to give huge money and two first round picks to get dak Prescott but you really don't know what other coaches think of a god because they have no reason to come out and tell us what a bill Belichick loves what about check decides he's our future that we can coach this guy into the kind of quarterback we had to deal with over the years and we haven't dealt with well the guy was some mobility a guy who can throw well on the run a guy who is always there always healthy when Tom Brady missed four games in twenty sixteen as the deflate gate suspension finally kicked in Jimmy Garoppolo got injured just over percent got injured Brady hasn't been injured since Bernard Pollard him low week one of the two thousand eight season and tore his ACL we take that for granted teams don't you need your quarterback there every week in Prescott for years hasn't missed a

Jason Garrett joins Giants as new offensive coordinator

"Yeah I got a new job Jerry Jones is right he told us that Jason Garrett will be coaching in the NFL come next season and in fact he will be doing just that he's been hired by Joe judge and the New York Giants to be there all offensive coordinator we had a great day together you know you know I didn't know Joe real well been around about a couple different occasions I good conversations with them really good football conversations and now he and I know a lot of the same people I work for coach saving you work for coach David coaches always said such great things about Jo and so many other people that he's been around that I've been around said the same thing Jason Garrett on the giants in the huddle podcast and he was eager to make comments right away I'm happy for him I think as much as the Dallas Cowboys needed a fresh start and they're thrilled about their new head coach Mike McCarthy Jason Garrett needed something fresh and new as well I I tease the bunch up before that the cowboys actually made the announcement but my hash tag was free Jason Garrett let him go do something else let him go work in a different capacity although it is interesting right that he stays in the NFC east I thought the board to be really humorous why the giants though that was the question that he was that's right off the top just a first class organization and you you think about the history and tradition the New York Giants franchise in and what the merits of build the what the tissues of bill and all the great teams all the great coaches all the great players will get a part of this organization throughout its history and you know when you're playing this organization like I was four years you feel that Jason Garrett the new offense of coordinator who gets to work with none other than Daniel Jones interesting to hear what giants fans think about having chasing gear at again with inside the organization now jump to their often through coordinator spot where he was so maligned even after callin more to go over the plate calling full painting all the often whoa that lets is beyond as the the Dallas Cowboys had a really good off into season that was not the reason why they didn't end up by winning the end of season getting back to the playoffs in the stats for Jack NZ Kelly it don't tell you the whole story but their office of numbers were better than a good portion of what we saw from the yeah the rest of the NFL Jack was over four thousand yards as the Ellie and continues to do what it is that he's paid to do and yet still a lot of people pointing to Jason Garrett because the often didn't do enough well now here is going to be working with the second year quarterback in New York in Daniel Jones I want to start by and really what Joe said and in its introductory press conference you know I have an outsider's perspective on the giant a great respect for the organization great respect for the players on the team that would compete against but again it's it's coming from the outside I can't wait to get on the inside and and start to work with some of these guys and you know you mentioned Daniel Jones we thought a lot of coming out of college we weren't in the market for a quarterback it in the first round the year that he came out at the same time you go through that evaluation process and you know anybody who was around him in our organization with the cowboys just thought the world of does it sound excited I mean for sure most of the questions that he's been answering over the past few months a bit about his job status and about why the cowboys were under achieving but still he felt rejuvenated yes like he's really looking forward to this

Jimmy Johnson to enter Hall of Fame, but not in Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor

"Really truly believe. It's embarrassing for the Dallas Cowboys. That Jimmy is now a pro football hall of Famer and that it actually took this. You know a specific centennial annual class for him to get in and that he's not in the ring of honor that's it's it's a shame it really truly is yeah it is And and you know I don't know we don't know you know the behind the scenes of of all that but it certainly does you know put Put their among you know on the front of the The world stage just to you know. How do you explain this right? Yeah and the guys in the hall all of fame because of what he did in your organization. Yeah he's not what dozens yeah. Yeah no exactly You know so yeah I mean I I you know I agree with you and you know it's also you know kind of you know how like we always talk about things you can't plan you know the the same very same week that Jason Garrett Leave the organization. Mike McCarthy joins the organization and then Jimmy Johnson gets inducted into the pro football hall of fame. I mean you just can't plan that I mean and you know so here is McCarthy now you know he's now he's got you know quite a high standard To you know to shoot after and then you know I I wish him the all the success and hope he surpasses that but you you know. That's pretty high standard now. Yeah I WANNA get your. We've got a criminal out into the end here but to finish the tai-bo on the Jimmy Jerry. Thing it you're right like there could be. I mean because you know there's an infinite amount of possibilities or I guess it's technically fine but I mean there is potentially a reasonable or at least somewhat understandable reason. Why Jimmy Johnson's not during a fire like that possibility does exist? But you said it I mean you. CanNot it really explain this in all this does is really make Jerry. Jones look poorly. I don't think you know I think that you look at it. I don't believe leaving Karma that's not like you know our faith or anything but I do think it's at the very least interesting that you know so you know because people say Jerry's there is only in the hall of fame because he stood on. Jimmy shows whatever but. I think it's funny that you know denied that Jerry was celebrated with cowboys fans at Agency stadium. Liam for going on you know when they give them their hall of fame ring. That night was the night. They lost to the eagles in two thousand seventeen. That's literally the worst loss ever in a ged stadium sister. You know what I mean. That's just a really funny coincidence. And you know you look at Gil Brandt who also took way too long to get him to honor and he just barely got in there before before he got into the hall of fame and at the time the writing was on the wall that he was going into the hall but Gil Brandt went in the night. They beat the saints in two thousand eighteen. You you know what I mean this like incredible night everyone will remember forever or as Jerry went on this one that everyone wants to forget and it just I think those are funny things that automatically you know make paint Jerry in a poor light or whatever he did release a statement And he said were so happy that the hall of fame has recognized. Jimmy Johnson. Awesome for what he is. That's the first sentence and it's just like well. Then how have you not you know. It's a really unsettling thing and I think that like like throwing a boomerang. Yeah it's a really a hypocrite. I don't know what word to use but it it looks really badly on the cowboys organization. That that it actually happened. I mean great for Jimmy Johnson. But you know you know. Somebody tweeted at us on the block on the boys camp. It said that Jerry should inductive an I vehemently disagree superior that the moment should belong to Jimmy and Jimmy alone because he did he has not gotten that do in cowboys fans. He should bathe in it all in his own. If he wants have his players you know like we talked triplets. Think that would be cool but this you know. It's a really really really bad season for Jerry. Jones the owner of the cowboys. And this is kind of the. You know the closing of that circle so to speak. Yeah no I totally agree and and the yeah. Yeah I mean I I think that You Know Jerry Has Been Very very kind of to due to Jimmy in terms of you know whatever success cowboys have had in terms of including hammer recognizing them for that in fact you know may have even gone out of his way to try tried to leave him out of it but You know this it's here is something he cannot ignore it. I mean it It's very vivid. Part of You know with the cowboys success is is due to and And Yeah I think it's Jimmy's opportunity. I'm you know Going there and enjoy the moment with themselves by you know himself on on a standalone basis as a as a dynamic coach that You know did some some pioneering things to change the game and I do believe that firmly

Why won't NFL teams hire minority coaches?

Why won't NFL teams hire minority coaches?

"Three head. Coaching spots have been filled this week. But none of those. Three coaches were minorities while the Rooney rule has been followed. Some are beginning to believe that minority forty candidates are not being taken seriously for the open jobs and anonymous African American. NFL Assistant Coach said that the League has quote finally shown. It's not the place as for black men to advance. It's ridiculous it's disgusting. We can sell tickets and make plays but we can't lead Shannon. Why isn't the Rooney rule role working? Well I think until skip this diversity thing yeah. Diversity is a great great to talk about but until you get someone the leadership position that says you know what. I don't just want to talk about it. I want to be about it so until you get older ships that actually wants to put some substance to this and this is what that you're GonNa get now if the general manager there's one general manager that's what minority and that's CR- Chris greer in Miami. There's zero owners that are it shouldn't say minorities. I guess because shot con radically a minority. But when you get the gist of what I what. I'm trying to say until leadership gets more diverse. You're I'm not gonNA have a more diverse hiring background skills. This was puzzling to be. Is that Eric. Enemy has the exact Zac job that Matt Nagy had negative and call plays any recall. Please man they can get the job. Doug Peterson sedinko plays true. Recall to play around Rivera's on but Ron Rivera was not the defensive coordinator in Philly. He he became a D. coordinator what's he got to the D. Coordinator in Chicago. You are you in San Diego. Yeah but he got his getting these enter coaching tree. Eric B enemy has the exact same job. That Matt Nagy Doug Peterson has and he's not getting opportunity is spirit but this. I don't really think that they go into it. Unless you incentivize this. Okay if you how minorities kill we maybe you have an extra three to five five dollars and cap space. That's the only thing that resonates with these owners because I get it skipped if I spent three billion. Let's just say I spent three billion dollars for a restaurant run. You Go tell me what the hell I need to cook. Cook whatever I WanNa Cook it there. And that's how they look at it. Jerry Jones spent money for this. This this mind you oh tell me why should get killed but but this notion that Oh and they brought Muhiba Marvin Marvin Lewis. He brought him in to to do that. Situation wasted the same with the giants the giants they had irebi enemy. They what Joe Judge Chris Rashard Rashard. Excuse me Chris Restoring. Yeah so now. Now we're down to one. Vacant Cleveland Reunion. I'm talking about how good already know. Angle get no frills JAYCO network skill. He already interviewed there. So you would now now the take my name off the leader and solid rubber solid. Take my name off the list. Because he's GonNa get Mad Max two and a half years if you're lucky that seems to instead that's all Jimmy can stomach now if you look at it they keep these. You look at Mike Patton. You look at all the guys they've had and these guys have had I think. Hugh Jackson stayed the longest at two and a half years. But everybody's been two years the list huge only two and a half two and a half long but you get you get these other guys you get pretty kitchens and you look at patent and you look at a I forget. Just give all these one year jazz. WE ACHE AAC CLEVELAND. That in Cleveland of the North this skill ruining rules a joke. I get it. You know minorities Cadillac. An affirmative action thanksgiving. Yeah but in -firmative action. I guess it's federal dollars. You'RE NOT GONNA get the money if you don't do this. The NFL is a is a private entity. So what can you do. What Ki- what can you give? Nfl Do not the so. I have been tracking this for a long time because one of my best friends is John. Wooten who is now the retired leader of the Fritz Pollard. Alliance and he was the driving force behind instituting the Rooney rule as I hiring practice in the national shirow all league and John's point from the start was I just need interviews because if a young assistant coach gets interviewed a couple of times times it gets reported in his name gets out there and if another owner sees that name enough over maybe a couple of years hiring cycles else maybe an owner says chee that guy. He's getting a lot of interviews. Maybe I should bring in. Maybe I should be more open minded to him. But if you're GONNA curse because if I get a a lot of interviews and I'm not getting hired was wrong why here the me getting hired cave liability with that. But John's point in the end was I'd rather have interviews than not have interests. Okay okay so let's go back to the stat that I use last week. The Institute of Diversity and Ethics In sports twenty nine thousand nine racial and gender report card for the National Football Bali. The League got actually an a plus for hiring of color. Assistant coaches right a sit a plot. Oh that's progress right. It got a deep loss for hiring head coach of Color White eight-plus assistance d-plus head head coaches. There's a big disconnect there and it shows you. That owners are fine. Oh hire two or three black assistant fine with that but nope nope. I don't want to head coach to be black. Right gives quite to the restaurant you can cook. You'll be in the bank but Michelle not the bridge. I roll up now okay so when I texted back and forth last we can use this last week of John Wooten just beside himself now. He is devastated by this this development his point was that only one. GM Chris Grin Miami. Point out is use. John's word heartbreaking because it could start with the GM right a black GM of or of color could be more open minded to say to the owner. Hey listen this guy is really bring him in. Let me let me introduce him to you right. The conduit to the owner can be stronger. Iran have I don't know six or eight black. GM right right. We've had them around the league four or but all of a sudden there's a dearth to rape Barma with Barma within Cleveland. He'd Gone Rick Smith who I know very well be in Denver. He interviewed for The Washington. Ashington John Daniel Snyder said head coach could be a head coach. Basically general manager after the Washington like who are the head coaching after the draft. The General Mattis. Okay so sometimes there is group think or shink sheep among the owners because in the end they do want to win right. And if they're looking around the League league and that black head coaches really successful they say well I want one of those. I want to go that direction right well. There was one black head coach who started to have success late in the year ear and he happened to be allied with Chris. Clear in Miami and Brian Floors off the Patriots. Well they started out all time badge for about what seven seven games fifty. Nine seven opening renders and then they basically it felt like they turned the whole roster iside down which they needed to do and then all of a sudden the last nine games they go five and four they upset the eagles and then they went to foxborough and just basically ended the season. I thought for the new New England Patriots playoff teams right. Okay so all the sudden Brian floor floor with the help of Chris greer. They're having big success. It looks like it's headed in the right drug us us but it wasn't enough of a splash to create momentum through the hiring process and right because John Wooden again texted me back with so many names he said we have so many in the pipeline. Who already started with Eric? B Enemy and Chris Rock. I think Chris Shaw Bad Year on defense but when I watch him interviewed when I watch his body language. It's a stunt man he's he's got. CEO Written all over him. He looks like a commanding officer to me. There's not enough black head coaches skip. Because because you look you look at Mike McCarthy guest job he hires the guy that gave him his opportunity coordinator fifteen years ago so you see the circle. We'll skip once you become a head coach. What do you do you go to the combine? You go to say elbow you got your drake. He goes to the coaches meeting and Yada Yada Yada and to connect with the boom boom boom right right. So if I'm not in that Lou. How do I get into loops? Because a rid of staff they said eighty percent of the jobs are never posted so in other worth people get hired somebody a friend or family member is not what you know who you know There in live the roof. It does house so to finish John. Bruton's list of pipeline candidates being AMEE. Chris Rashard Robert Sala. He threw Jim Caldwell on his list. Is Jim Colwell was highly successful zestful. Jim called wheel lost his jaw. Going nine and seven in two years Matt Patricia has nine total win and he's still got a job now he goldwell still doesn't have another job he in four years. He went to the playoffs twice in the last year he went nine and seven and they said well you know we need to move in a different direction. uh-huh and the guy that's replaced has yet to win nine total games in two years. Do you still own a still on the clock. Okay Steve wilks got one shot in time. I'm one year in Arizona and he was gone. He's now the defensive coordinator in Cleveland which probably didn't help his cause this year that much but I don't hear his name no in Cleveland right right on the list. And then there's Terrel Austin who's young stripes potential star coach and John Wootton into his list with Marvin Lewis who he thinks deserves a second shy right. Okay so Jerry. Jones did observe in qualified for the Rooney rule by bringing in. I Marvin Lewis. I think Jerry was shrewd operating waiting there. Because he didn't pick a young like like Chris Rashard type interview him because of Jerry had interviewed a young potential upcoming head. Black coach right. There's more pressure on Jerry. What was wrong with right? What's the problem exactly? He went to Marvin Lewis because he thinks Marvin Lewis is kind of old news right right. He got his longtime time shot in Cincinnati. Listen I still think Marvin did a good job job seriously. Yes okay he went. Oh and seven in the playoffs but still it was Andy Dalton Alton you re you with covering the NFL and you remember what Cincinnati before. Marlene got there was John. Carter number one overall. You Got David Cleland with the fourth. The fourth picket. You got big day to day and Wilkerson purse around the second pick in the draft year after year after a year people. Forget what I know. Marvin didn't win a playoff game. But they weren't even getting close to the playoffs for Marvin got there. No so I was disappointed in Jerry because you know my heart Hartz. I'd love to see Jerry Jones higher black head coach and I think I probably won't live long enough or Jerry will live long enough to know.

"jerry jones" Discussed on The Herd with Colin Cowherd

"Jason Mcintyre in for Colin who. I guess partied really hard last night. He told me he would be listening this morning though. Hope everybody at a safe phenomenal New Year's Eve My parents always love to joke that Jason New Year's Eve amateur hour in never want to go out on New Year's Eve. So what did I do. I started New Year's Eve by playing eighteen holes of golf. Yes something I had not done. Jeez probably eight or nine in years. It was a little taxing. My back is hurting this morning but always look love to try. New Things ended the year with a bang and today. Oh boy we got. It's a Fireworks Ladies and Gentlemen Couple Bowl Games. Although I will rue the demise of New Year's Day College football remember when it mattered when there were like like eight bowl games on New Year's Day just sat there flipping the channel. That's no more. There's just four games today and they aren't even really good which means you'll probably be listening to the show so we got a lot today. Couple of great guests to break down the chaos of the NFL. Coaching Carousel We all wait with bated breath on Jerry Jones to make a decision on Jason Garrett. I play a lot of Texas holdem with my buddies. And I like to say a poop or get off the pot and Jerry Jones. Come on what are we waiting for. You know. I can't imagine a scenario where Jones keeps Garrett but again folks we're talking about about a seventy seven year old billionaire. You know. This is a guy who loves the attention and there was no way he was gonna fire Garrett or part ways with Kierra whatever you WANNA call it. He was never going to do that on black Monday. Jerry Jones needs his own special time for that he needs the attention and all the focus on him. I've got a mind blowing. NFL playoff stat. That you have to listen to. It's coming up in about eleven or twelve minutes I know the heard audience loves to gamble. This is the most important stat for wild card. Weekend I will give that to you shortly and finally got some great advice for Baker Mayfield. I recently signed my third grader. Ah for Jujitsu and I sit on the classes. I bring my computer and I watch and make sure you know. He's having fun and the the Jujitsu teacher are offered an amazing pearl of wisdom. That's GONNA apply to Baker Mayfield. I know you guys saw the video from the bengals game so stick around for that but I I want to start the show here. You guys are aware of what happened in Cleveland this week right. Obviously Freddie Kitchens gets dusted there's a parting of the ways with the general manager. But what the media's not telling you is that the nerds are taking over football and I'm not saying that in a bad way. That's not a derisive. Ace of word. NERD is cool. I love to nerd out now. Okay whether it's College Football Bowl Games. NFL drafts whatever. Vert is being a nerd. Now is cool. It means. You're probably pretty smart right. It means you're maybe rich or building some wealth. And there's a decent chance if you're a nerd. You're you're dating and instagram model. Because that's kind of how the Internet works right now listen. I don't think I could have built a website sold it and then pivoted to radio on TV. If I hadn't nerd out on sports so there's nothing wrong with being a nerd but the nerds folks right now are taking over football and the football guys. They're kind of being shown the door. That's what happened in Cleveland. The story behind the story is show me the analytics. And if you don't I'm gonNA show you the door. And what went down Cleveland. This is going to be a thing moving forward in the NFL. We've already seen the nerds takeover baseball okay and again being a nerd. That's cool sabermetrics. Hello they made a movie called money ball which was phenomenal okay. It flipped baseball on its head and analytics politics have taken over baseball. Anybody who's playing baseball right now. At a high level in the majors is winning because of sabermetrics analytics really spreadsheet baseball. Now you can argue whether or not. That's that's good for the sport. That's another discussion but the nerds of one out and then you look to the NBA. Right now folks. It's a three point or a layup. That's what the efficiency numbers say. That's what the robots and the computers are telling teams shoot. Three's shoot layups layups. Don't do the mid range we'll pull you out of a game if you shoot a mid range jumper. I actually went to the Lakers. Mavericks Game Sunday night out here in. La and You know you get. If you get the media credential you get to go on the court beforehand and I'm there with a A guy who works at a rival network. He's a big gambler. And we're courtside. And Jared Jared Dudley and the Lakers are warming up. And I know Jared Dudley a little bit 'cause he came through F s one and I talked to him And if you guys listen to my Saturday radio show On Fox Sports Radio Radio. You know I'm a sponge when anybody coach player. GM owner comes through the building. So I got to be friendly with Jared Dudley and he comes over damps me up on on the baseline and talk a little bit about the NBA and the holidays. And my buddy says to jared Dudley. Hey I saw you working on your floater. You floater game needs. Some work worked. Say Jokingly and Jared Dudley of the Lakers says who cares about the floater. It's all three layups baby. That's what analytics has done to the the NBA again. We can discuss if that's good or bad but hello Golden State Warriors. Hello Houston Rockets. Not In the playoffs but analytics is taking get over baseball and the NBA. Football's kind of pushback. However the Cleveland Browns Front Office debacle this year it all came down to analytics versus the football guy? Okay now guess who survived in Cleveland. The analytics guy who just happens to be Paul Depot Desta if you saw moneyball which I referenced earlier he was the guy that Jona Hill played very nerdy very very by the book. Okay this is a guy who went to Yale. He's a slave to numbers. He survived in Cleveland. The football guy. John Dorsey Lifelong football guy. He got dusted folks. If you're not on board with the analytics if you're not on board with it's spreadsheet football and the algorithms that make up all the stuff you're in trouble okay. John Dorsey was football lifer I I looked him up just to get some background on John. Dorsey the browns. Gm who got fired and this guy was an Alpha football player who played linebacker for four years drafted by the the packers. Okay gets a job as a college scout is in the Mike Holmgren tree or family. If you will. Mike Coleman leave Sir Seattle John Dorsey he goes to Seattle with and then he goes back to Green Bay ends up in Kansas City. But what happened in Kansas City to football guy it was a bad communicator. There was a story that They ended up cutting Jeremy macklin a wide receiver and John. Dorsey did that by leaving him. A Voice Mail Great Communication John Dorsey. Anyway he comes to Cleveland and bills. It's amazing roster and this time last year right. The browns had finished strong long in the regular season Baker. Mayfield look good okay. And then they add Odell Beckham and everybody says this is one of the most talented rosters in the league if you Google most talented rosters in the NFL in two thousand nine hundred the browns are top. Ten heading into the season built by a football guy. So what happened this season. Well the Brown did not do very well okay. They had a ton of talent undeniable but their coach was abysmal. Okay and Baker Mayfield regressed. They lost a lot of games. So season comes to an end in the owner. Big Money Guy. He's got a decision I just want to make. Do I stick with the football guy. John Dorsey who built this awesome roster or do I stick with the analytics guy who loves a good spreadsheet and he says he was successful in baseball. Okay if you've seen moneyball hey deeper desta and the as built something awesome. Didn't win a world series. But he did very well went to the dodgers. Turn them around and like one year they hadn't been to the playoffs. I think in like sixteen years depot Desta thirty-one-year-old GM. I'm not being mean calling him inert already guys nerdy and guess what he wins instantly so this guy has been crowned and this is where we're headed in sports. Okay if you guys follow me on twitter her instagram and all this stuff you know. I'm big on gambling. The biggest thing I learned this year and I'm doing the gambling guy at F S. What I do these videos for college and NFL picks all the time Go unlock it in the gambling. Show episodes all in on gambling and the biggest thing I learned in sports gambling in twenty nine thousand nine was if you don't have an algorithm or a model. You're going to be in some trouble. I'm not saying you're throwing darts but unless you've got a machine behind you trust me the Vegas sports books they all do. You're going to be in some trouble the analytics the robots are taking over folks so the Cleveland. Oakland Brown's decide. Well I go with the football guy or the analytics guy and you know what made browns owner. Jimmy has limbs decision a lot easier. He looked in his division. And did you guys notice what happened in Baltimore. I'm sure you guys aware Lamar Jackson and the Ravens Best Team in the league super bowl favorite now. But what's the story behind the story in Baltimore well this year. John Harbaugh the coach of the Ravens. who was on the hot hot seat last year? Remember with flacco struggling. He brought in a twenty five year old Yale graduate. Who Majored in Behavioral Economics? Okay a twenty five year old Yale graduate to make all of the fourth down decisions all of them. How do you think that worked? They just GONNA ask cash. How do you think it worked out fourth down for the Baltimore Ravens in the twenty five year old Yale Grad? Wow Look at the Baltimore. Ravens were the best fourth down team in the NFL. Seventy percent conversions. Ladies and gentlemen they hire a nerd from Yale he bangs it out on the spreadsheet. What are the analytic say? Go here. Don't go there the Baltimore. Ravens had the most fourth down conversions in the NFL. This year. Seventeen there were seventeen and twenty four seventy percent the robots are coming for the NFL. The robots are coming. They're they're winning and it's not a negative that this is happening. I just want a lot of football is to wake up out there. You've got to get.

"Michigan span base is all because i've been good for one hundred giants cornerstone franchise n._f._l. And let me tell you something. The those old fans defended eli to the end and they would call and complain about benching him. They're not gonna call anymore. If daniel jones i mean everybody's talking about how good he looked now. The players are the worst case scenario for the giants and pat shurmur. Daniel jones have the preseason that he had because he had looked iffy or like he wasn't ready and you would feel comfortable okay. He needs a year to sit behind eli. Maybe at the end of the year. If it's a disaster you start getting them out there against some reps but this is the worst case scenario where the team is behind it and he looked good and and the fans are going to be watching to see does finally the cowboys are still stocked with her three top opposite players looking for new deal. L. seeks been holding out of camp and zach amari were bennett camp but they're going to open contract extensions for them are open to contract incentives for them even when the season begins ends but when asked about how he is working to get these deals done jerry jones admitted that he prefers to deal directly with the players when when you cut out people in between the money and the player we all know that agents attorneys all have their agenda by the way they're all taking money yeah the pie too when they're there and so the straighter it goes from the source to the one receiving nine times more official court of course there's more fun of course jerry wanted agent course. It's also not legal so this is from an anonymous n._f._l. Agent he said the team team that is notorious for trying to go around the agent going right to the player and getting the player to believe hey. It's better to be a dallas cowboy and take less money here in this case the differences ezekiel elliott and even dak and amari cooper. They're not buying it. Maybe jerry jones is starting to get a little frustrated because some of his old tricks aren't working so dealing directly with players who are represented by agents agents violates the c._p._a. It also violates federal label labor laws. You have representation. You can't go around them. Obviously we could all jerry admitted did he. He does this. You know here's the thing is that it is illegal and you and i both had a and both had bosses. It's one of those things that's illegal but companies still have a way of letting you know things are getting uncomfortable and they have certain budgets every i mean it's like this is why jerry by the way goes out and talks publicly match his way of connecting with the player through eliminating the agent just come out and talk about that piping and that's probably another reason that zeke's six agent has him far far away from jerry and far away from the team because he knows i'm joe. Johns can be very compelling. Everyone talks about how charming and great jerry is at what he does. I mean he is the best where he does. That's why he's jerry jones. I bet you zeke's agent has him at a hotel that doesn't get american television and when they asked you to u._s._a. Today in the morning no we don't want we don't want to u._s._a. Eh today delivered to our komo hotels him bunker down. I mean this does make perfect sense and obviously like you said if he's a company or jerry jones working working directly with the player. You're going to be able to influence more. That's why people hire agents. That's why you pay them because they get to be the bad guy and they know all the ins and outs of how these contracts were right so <hes> <hes> good luck with that but it could be why he's frustrated because that is an easy way to get things done and jerry jones joined with the news well. That's the news and thanks. I heard peter. King is gonna join us in about five minutes. I was talking about schedules and i said that the patriots are amazing but they do get a scheduling break because they go five and one in their division evasion that gives them a buying a home field advantage in the playoffs..

"Visit in the preseason people love that stuff and he will be joining us in the one hour from now joy taylor. It's here as always joy. How are you great good morning. Good morning everybody so <hes> the cowboy hold out. Those two holdouts do great running backs the one with the chargers in the woman. The cowboys not a shocker the biggest brand in the n._f._l. The cowboys the one getting all the press zeke is considered better than melvin gordon but this is what it happens when you're the cowboys. Every holdout becomes the story in the n._f._l. We've had two huge stories before the season starts. Andrew luck's retirement zeke's holdout are the top two by a mile and jerry jones first time sort of hinted that they may start the season without ezekiel elliott which i've been saying for months. Now i am okay. Hey with this. I am okay with this. I think it's smart for a lot of reasons. I'll get to those reasons next but here's jerry. We may very well apply without a player that is not coming in on his contract. If that's the case we just play and we'll play. We'll play well. We've got a marathon here and we won't zeke when we get to the playoffs. We won't zeke when we're in the dog days of this season as you well know you have to plan your personnel and you you have to <hes> manage a player <hes> the caliber of zeke. We have to be prepared to play without any given player okay so the two cowboy contracts that we really deeply care about our zeke. That's the most important because he's holding out and number two is dak. We like to keep that number thirty to thirty five thirty six. You can kill two birds with.

"The cowboys jerry jones yesterday join i were laughing how about this jerry put on the cowboy hat they found a perfect shaded area it's a well done one on one interview it was like he's not trying into look like he prepared for the interview but it's very well done the lighting's perfect and i believe he wanted to make a strong address yesterday yesterday saying you know running back don't get to the super bowl this was jerry with a little bit of his owners address zeke was hearing it even though he tried to act like like you know this is just an off the cuff interview i think jerry took a stand yesterday in this interview saying basically zeke we're not paying you two years out and if we do it's it's not the number you're going to like that was my takeaway that's how it landed for me tom you heard it i'm sure how did it land for you that was my first reaction was a very clear your message from jerry jones my second reaction was to think back to nineteen ninety-three when emmitt smith the leading rusher in the league held out into the season they started in two and all of a sudden the cowboys found a way to get that deal done they have a track record here of wanting to pay the running back position they've not been scared about that jerry's talked openly about alex sititi the is that they feel like they've got their new triplets with dak prescott with amari cooper who they traded a first round pick for a year ago and then with ezekiel elliott he is not head injury issues choose like demarco murray which may have impacted the cowboys decision not to resign murray for the long-term zeke is still only twenty four years old there have been some off field questions but the the cowboys have been steadfast in their support of ezekiel elliot through all that sending cowboys attorneys into his appeals hearing aids speaking openly that they have zeke's back even when he was going through some difficult things some of them self inflicted and zeke himself has said he needs to be conscientious about the positions he's putting himself in continue to work to be a better pro a better person the logical outcome to all of this is that ezekiel ezekiel elliott becomes the highest paid running back in the n._f._l. it is with the dallas cowboys at this thing does does get done before the season what we know as of now though zeke is in kabul in kabul mexico is agents are down there as well talks are active this is certainly the league of the cowboys would still like to get into camp even if the only real reaction when he's not there is try to talk tough all right tom pella sarah great stuff n._f._l. network n._f._l. dot com love love to have you on again tom appreciate your work nice job thank you anytime call you bet all sorts of stuff he'd been to the vikings camp the eagles campi said carson wentz looked thin you know the n._f._c. is just so hard to predict again two years ago we love the vikings last year kirk cousins lessons down minnesota minnesota probably has the second best roster i mean the three best rosters to me in the n._f._c. are philadelphia rams vikings like don't don't don't don't sell your minnesota stock that division is that division is fascinating aaron rodgers is back with a really young team chicago's defense is frightening minnesota's rosters there's amazing and your fourth-best team detroit has matt stafford who pick you off if you have to go to michigan plan and he gets hot so interesting division joy with the news this is the third line news another interesting division a._f._c. north which the ravens plan they're not going to shy away from letting outing lamar jackson use his legs is season and n._f._l. networks brian billick asked john harbaugh with the pitch count on jackson's running might be this season you see a guy like cam newton a max.

"I think San Francisco it's going to be the team that doubles their wins or more frankly with cuyler Murray. I wouldn't wanNA play him early in the air. I have no idea what I'm getting for. ARIZONA ARIZONA IS GONNA shock some people in the first month to six weeks because nobody knows what they do. You GotTa go you gotTa go watch college film to figure out what the offense is. They're going to catch people flat-footed so in the N._F._C. Again this year Saints Bears Cowboys Seahawks now in all four of those I think they're competitive teams but I think once again and this is what the numbers say say and I'm not trying to be contrarian. This is the N._F._C.. A._F._C. is the conference of Brady. N._F._C.'s the conference a parody and I think it's GonNa look totally totally different this year all right. Let me shift to this so jerry. Jones is an on twitter and WH- Somebody Asks Jerry a few years ago. Why are you not on twitter? He had the best answer he goes. I like the fact of deniability he goes. He goes if I have every one of my comments on twitter. I can't deny it because I like to be able to deny stuff. I'd say that I didn't do daddy goes to twitter and I don't want myself out there that much well Jerry Jones yesterday today. Sit Down Interview. He picked a station. He picked a person he said. I'm going to do a one on one interview Nice. Shea Jerry's got the cowboy hat on. He's got the branding already. This was very classic. Jerry make sure you can see the cowboy logo. It's a one on on one interview. There's nice shade the cameras all tied. It's just Jerry and he had a message to deliver to one Ezekiel Elliott. You don't have to have a rushing champion to win. A Super Bowl but Emmett was the first one to do it and that's one of the dilemmas at running back is that the League knows that you can win super bowls and not have the Emmett Smith back. There are not have Z. back there consequently Bentley when we are looking and putting Zeke's contract in place. We've got to realize that the ultimate goal is to win the Super Bowl okay join. I have been in T._v.. Too Long. That interview was not your typical training camp interview. Jerry had a cowboy hat and a cowboy shirt. The lighting was perfect for an older gentleman the tree behind it wasn't so serene it was serene and calm Jerry pick that spot and the logo to deliver a one.

"I just think that this is a backwards way over protest situation give the guy the security, and they say go flex, and if you don't like and not giving him the security because he doesn't wholeheartedly believe in Jason Garrett is the players, but it get myself. I think the difference is the Dallas dynamic and cultures different. I don't think Jason geared ever the gotta flex the gather does all the flexing Jerry Jones. And so when a player books up it's going to be Jerry, the goes, insist down and talks to him and Jerry has that kind of relationship with players like, hey, man, we're all in on two thousand nineteen we're trying to be in the two thousand twenty Super Bowl. And we can't have this. You know, what I've done for you. You know, we're trying to do. And he's got Zeke in his hip pocket. He stood behind Z in his darkest hour. He. He has stood behind back when the whole media everybody thinks this guy isn't a franchise quarterback. He's got the two most important guys then he's got offense lineman. That's where they've invested their money offense. And they we in about this ain't Pittsburgh. So and then what what TJ said the what does he have some problematic? Maybe DeMarcus Lawrence Rainey, Gregory, some problem children on the defensive line. I think he feels like they can handle that with that coach Chris Rashard and rod Marinelli. I just think the dynamics in Dallas are different and Jerry has so much leverage over the players that he does need to put a gun to Jason geared. And like, hey, man, you got to perform football's a great game of skill greater game. Will you just cut off a lot of the buying a lot of players not gonna have the same by with a coach that the owner I like Kelly Moore to coordinate or he's going to do. Well. Woodlock and while we're joined now by our favorite ram Basler. Eric Dickerson who's in Atlanta? Getting ready for the big game. Eric you look like you've got us up guys got a smile like. "For twenty percent off at Jerry Jones. I, this is really interesting yesterday. So Jerry he was talking about, you know there, there's roughing the passer penalties or that every year we have like a rule and people freak out in for a couple years. It was the catch rule that in preseason it was the was the helmet rule call. Now everybody's freaking out about the quarterback calls the roughing. The passer calls in Jerry Jones went on Dallas radio. He doesn't love anything. The NFL should be more physical. He had this to say. Our future is I see a real serious emphasis own of youth football, amateur football essay reflected at the high school level. And I see a collegiate game that certainly has a lot of finesse in it, but is a great game and makes these kinds of adjustments we're talking about. But when it comes to pro football to use a boxing term, that's when you put the six outs club so you don't rob fight with those ten outs or are you don't fight with those head years. Everybody's being really paid to go out and incur those type situations that have more risk at him. If I very interesting quote, basically, Jerry says, once you get paid millions of dollars, part of the deal is you take more hits and that it's more physical and you get hurt more at the NFL letter level, but it it's funny, it does. Sound. I think there that's how he sees the NFL. You're not going to get paid in college. You're not going to get paid in high school. But once you get the NFL you put the big boy gloves on this. No headgear for boxing. This is where we pay you to get hurt. I don't know how that land for a lot of people, but that's what he's saying. But the other thing is what I notice in pro football, and I think it's I see more and more. It's the opposite is that Bill Parcells used to always say as an NFL coach, I can only do with what college gives me. And if you look at right now, the leaders in the NFL on some of the most explosive offenses, they're using college offenses, the Philadelphia Eagles Kansas City Green Bay Carolina. By the way, Cam having a very good year right now, they're using what they call run pass option. That's college stuff. RPO's sound real tricky. It's not. It's basically the quarterback runs there. Some option stuff run pass option. That's a college offense. The flow of information now goes from. College to pro football. When I watch the NFL now I see college football all over it. When I watch college football, I don't see pro football over it. The tunnel has shifted that the NFL is now copying college football, and by the way, college football is getting more RPO friendly, which is college now takes the best athlete and put him at quarterback, the kid in Alabama. They take the best athlete, will that what's going to the NFL is guys that can run it used to be the best compliment. You could give a college football quarterback. This was the best thing you could say. He plays in a pro style offense in college. Nobody cares even the big twelve now to Sean compla- Baker compla-. So it's just the template in Jerry Jones is is, is worthy NFL? This is how the game should be played, and the other stuff is amateur. And when you get here, you got to change your game. But when. I.

"News quote, I made the presentation. You can see how I did. And quote Jones actually believed that a longer regular season in the shorter training camp preseason, we're result of fewer, not more concussions. He says, quote, I can make the case that we have an uptick in concussions. In the preseason Jones said, if you look at it, I would contend there would be less exposure. There also would be more money a lot more money. It will provide more than one billion dollars to the players. Jones said, it's certainly worth considering it would direct more value for what the plans expend to the players. Laser gentlemen. Grab a hold of your seat belt. I one thousand percent agree with Jerry Jones. The preseason should be lessened the regular seasons should be extended. And as far as I'm concerned, and as a simple reason. When you out there is a football player, it's costing you anyway. Practice on that turf cutting, jabbing, tackling, etc. You're putting yourself through the physical exertion anyway. You do it in any anyway. So if that's what you're going to do, why don't you do it when the games count. And if there's more money because the regular season games are obviously worth more to preseason games and you're jeopardizing your health, your well being in your career during preseason and practice. Why not minimize practice? Why not minimize preseason games, and if it dilutes the product to some degree, they sentiment that's only the first few weeks of the season. That's only the first few weeks of the season. So what you got to look at guys look a little bit sloppy. So what you gotta look at guys not look. You know, like their a games are there with them. So what. The games should count more often eighteen game season. Then you got you got people that I know they don't believe that they believe do away with the preseason. Keep the sixteen games. Gonna have to buy weeks in the season and probably extend e a playoff team in each conference to eight games as opposed to six nam opposed to that. Opposed to that. I'm saying, you know, make the regular season eighteen games, make the regular season count that much more. But in the same breath, you're not really jeopardizing anyone from an extra perspective because, again, ladies and gentlemen that jeopardizing themselves anyway, when they practice this is football. So almost like boxing, you ain't shadowboxing if somebody is punching you upside the head just because in front of a live audience or pay per view, doesn't mean you ain't getting knocked upside. Joe. So if you gotta go through and endure this stuff anyway, you might as well make it count more. Have more money thrown into the coffers of all of that and call it a day. That's what you might as well do this. What I would do. I'm wouldn't hesitate. This is a no brainer. Jerry Jones is one thousand percent correct on this issue. Plain and simple. The procedure should be completely eradicated as far as okay, but if you wanna keep it two weeks, fine. But outside of that, let's get down to these games. Baby eighteen games AT games I completely and wholeheartedly agree with Jerry Jones. Y'all got me a green with Jerry Jones for crying out loud. Edit eight. Say ESPN it's editing seven to nine three, seven, seven, six. I completely agree with this man when he's right. He's right. On a different subject. That's far more sensitive. I wanted to transition before we go to break to something that's on my mind because yesterday. On my television show. I take on ESPN. Are we discussed the topic of Tiger Woods talking about respecting the office of the presidency. And obviously because there's a lot of vitriol out there towards our president commander in chief. There are people that while Paul by what Tiger Woods had to say. I was not one of those people. Although I will openly confess. That although the black community support off Tiger Woods as a golfer is evident because we don't root against him. There is a collective level of discuss. Due to his on willingness to recognize his quote unquote blackness from years ago when he called himself. Keble Asian, whatever. I think that's what it is, what it was. And people had a problem with that. So when you hear him speak on social issues when you hear him speak on anything other than golf, you kind of have a raised eyebrow towards anything that comes out of Tiger Woods mouth..

"What he defended easy q elliot's so now it's a problem he's the feeling his player what's wrong with an owner stan enough whereas players he's not supposed to do that and what i'm fearful of or what i would be fearful of our over the lee they're gonna make jerry jones a sympathetic trigger because again i think it goes to tjx point if if he's been fine because he was too vigorous in his defence of ezekiel elliott that's called play re that's what play real world with the players jerry jones is defensive ezekiel elliott in the player's mind and maybe some object to people's mine was something to be applauded and if this is any part of why he's being fine i think the ownership that is pushing roger goodell to do this this could backfire on them and make jiri a sympathetic for could i make the argument who were the two people goodell 's been toughest on the patriots and the cowboys this is coming from the other owners there is resentment among the other owners and by the way jerry is not the only guy that pays roger goodell roger robert kraft is it this feels like rogers feeling heat saying the patriots are in the super bowl again ritz move of those football's jerry gets more plugged in every but he sues so so we have to pay all his bills this steals again you're gonna marinade on this tonight this feels like a bunch of owners resenting craft crashed now rockstar jerry's a rock rockstar in america this sounds like to your point jealous billionaires of those two owners jerry's already in the hall of fame and i could see some other nfl owners say.

"I mean i like you just can't okay i i think you have a hard time selling tear team that you're trying to win are we tweet base if you if you go back to them now that's all one other thing i want to get to before you go and this is sort of came up as we were setting up topics and we talked about it over the last few weeks i just wanna hit it here with you guys know are you guys are going to be in a car wednesday going wherever for the holiday and so this is going to be a big talker over the next few days jerry jones did tell usa today's joerg bell that he will not be suing the nfl if the compensation committee goes forward with the new contract for roger goodell in particular he won't be suing those individual owners who are on the compensation committee that's arthur blank bob mcnair bob kraft clark on art rooney and john mehra and so that's a good positive sign what will be interesting now to see is whether or not the compensation committee your exercise is is the power that they've been granted by the other owners to move forward and close a deal uh or if they will honour jerry jones's request which is to have an open discussion before they finalize the deal among all of the owners so this dances in over but does feel at least to some degree of the rhetoric spent toned down a little bit and needs to be because it's can overshadow a great month of december football where there is going to be awesome playoff races and it's going to cloud the playoffs and i think as they found out in deflate gate in some of the other issues that the nfl's had to deal with leads finally cleared the way for the discussion to be just about football for two months the nfl really truly needs right now they need from thanksgiving to the end of the super bowl to be as clean as it can be so they were not talking about the all fields.

"jerry jones" Discussed on First Things First

"Like that is that is the flashpoint four jerry jones i a few notes here that i want wanna point out one no matter what you is a football fan thank of roger goodell this would be really bad for the sport and for the league if this if jerry jones gains any traction with this or jerry jones is successful in this because you can't i understand the coverage league's most popular team the most discussed team they're the most polarizing team they cannot be disproportionately so the most powerful team no matter what you think of goodell i do not think people believe he is tipping his finger on the scales when it comes to the competitive nature of the sport and he if anything else he seems to hold some of the stars and start franchises to a higher standard we saw tom brady go through that we're now seeing ezekiel elliott go through that now i don't know if you're holding zeke to a higher standard of the regular center but regardless he is not playing favorites amongst the teams and if jerry jones were already has outsized influence if this were to be successful it would be the cowboys league and that's not right that's not good for fans in kansas city or in jacksonville or in houston or in los angeles like we don't want that to happen right now cc tell me if i'm wrong there's about six owners that have they are kind of the upper crust of ownersh yes does always been a group that was kind kinda that led the nfl in they gave a lot of information and had influence on the other owners it's the hunt family yes jerry jones tomorrow's it's the row it's craft it's bob mcnair seems to have elevated himself within it the rooney's like that is those six teams in those six owners i'm okay with that 'cause you always need kind of a power structure i'm not okay with one team or one owner being at the top of the class but my final point on this one could sisi i'm curious your thoughts on it.
