Will China, and the U.S Learn That Bigger Isn't Better?

"I see in The Wall Street Journal this morning. In tackling China's real estate bubble, Xi Jinping faces resistance to property tax plan. They have a bubble Bryant. Even she admits it. When it burst, will it hurt us? Yes. I don't think so. And I mean, let me qualify that a little bit. From a macroeconomic point of view, I do not believe that it will damage the U.S. economy in any significant way. Now if there are companies, there are individuals in the United States who do have investments in China who have tied them. Solves more closely. And some of them may get hurt. But I just look at what happened in Japan. And I know Japan wasn't truly communist. China is. But Japan directed a lot of its investments from the top. Cartels, very cocktails. Yes, big business, big banks, big government, and they all decided back in the 60s basically that they were going to produce consumer goods and sell them to the world. Especially to the United States. And it weren't because they actually did it pretty well. And they were the first ones there. It's almost like the first cell phone. Anyway, they won for a while. Until they couldn't execute it anymore because eventually these big government decisions get it wrong. And I would argue that's exactly what's happening in

Biden Special Envoy Warns US Must 'Prepare' for Fully Nuclear Iran

"States. Doctor oran, welcome back great to talk to you again, sir. Good to talk to you. Big story coming from the Washington free Beacon. I know that this is something that's gotten a lot of attention in Israel has gotten next to none here in the United States. Adam credo reporting yesterday that U.S. Iran envoy Robert malley, whose name is very familiar to those of us who follow these things, says that the Biden administration is preparing for, quote, a world where Iran doesn't have constraints on its nuclear program. Comments that show how little progress has been made in negotiation with Tehran regarding a return to the JCPOA the 2015 Barack Obama ran deal. Doctor Oren, I mean, if that deal had remained in place, we'd still be dealing with in Iran didn't have any constraints on its nuclear weapons program. I mean, I think that that's one thing that should be said right off the bat. That deal wasn't going to prevent Iran from creating nuclear weapons. It only it only had a ten year pause in it, maybe. And that's only if you believed Iran was complying with it. Yes, that's true. It was ultimately going to his line was ultimately going to have an unlimited nuclear program. The big difference was that while it restrained itself somewhat, and some aspects of the program, just on the nuclear enrichment, not a missile development, not on the development of advanced centrifuges, not on developer warheads, didn't do anything about any of that. But when I was going to get paid a 100 billions of dollars that it wasn't going to spend on schools and hospitals, you can believe that. I think the major thing that rob valley is saying, believe it or not is the truth and the truth that has been around for a long time. I've been talking about on these really news. And that is the United States is willing to coexist with an Iran that has threshold capacity. I mean, the ability is created a bomb within a matter of weeks, because you've been a matter of days. Among the professionals, if referred to as Japan like capabilities, there's Japan has that capability, but of course, you can't threaten to wipe anybody off the map or is not supporting financial payers. "They'd make a lot more money overall because again they don't have to travel in and they just need good internet so as long as these little towns start getting good internet could actually start attracting big company employees. Which would mean more money coming into their town. Redevelop revitalization stuff like that they want to have no more paper entity they want to have no more paper by twenty twenty five so because it's all worked from home it's all digital was no real reason to have paper anymore. And that's been a big issue We've done a couple of stories about stamps. Everything how in. Japan has to be stamped. And it's a physical stamps. You need a physical piece of paper to do a physical stamp. That's really bad. They're going to have zero greenhouse impact by twenty forty which a report i read is actually too late but at least they're going in that direction. I do appreciate the efforts. I think this is good. This is kind of like coronas bad but this kind of change is the thing that japan needs. Unlike ishita the new prime minister who is not gonna change anything. He's going to focus on the imperial family. Come on no one cares about that. I don't think the imperial family cares about the imperial family entity is essentially going to have four main satellite offices in big cities so people will maybe have to go there every now and then probably they will just remote in when necessary for meetings but that's it Hanged this is really interesting. Sort of new shift entity being a massive company means that other companies might actually follow suit. "You look at think about the notion of privacy being a fundamental human right. it's more of the same minutes different or should be right. If this right is fundamental to mandate that should be greater consistency in terms of how it's We've seen julie with asian countries many of them writing privacy laws updating their There's greater alignment to gdp pr or gdp is always the starting point or a reference point. Even if they're gonna go different from china's new law that came out right they. They studied jeep in deviated deliberately in certain areas. But the core rights The individual map pretty closely. In right we're seeing more more. Asian countries apec economies achieving. Adequacy with the o'reilly with new zealand having long standing right at japan getting adequacy or years ago in korea's opinion just coming out more recently in so we're seeing a harmonisation or interoperability taking place at the legislative level in so these laws are lining in. So we are. We're hopeful that the regulators will get together with their japan or global privacy enforcement network. Or gpa the global privacy assembly and really look for ways to ensure a safe you know free flow of data globally ranked. Because we're all in this together in a sense. Then you need operability and free flow of data to participate in the economy so do businesses have to sit and wait for those regulators to do what you just laid out harvey Are we what is the right path for businesses. That are kind of watching for interoperability. Waiting is it. Are there steps that can be taken to help. Move toward that world that you both have just described. Yeah i mean in some sense. I think cisco has it a little bit easier in that we are to be company right and we've been hammered by our customers long before a gdp our game into place in terms of being chris on explaining what we're doing with data in being transparent giving our customer that level of control that they're demand right cascading the individual users or data subject rights into our product features and functionality. "Gallery owner in a print shop owner and they work together to make copies of japanese art and then sell it and so of course they were selling it as it was real but it was weird that they sold it department stores. 'cause i don't know i think if you're selling forged art you would need to be a little more subtle about it. You don't go i guess. No you do it out in the open this is. Maybe why i'm not a good criminal. You do it out in the open. You do it brave you do it strong. And then everyone's assumes that what you're doing is real. It's legitimate so they sold at department stores. They sold one hundred and twenty total known forgeries. That's all it is about that story Forging art is not a story. That comes up very often anymore. So it's interesting. I don't know why. I mean actually it would be easier and easier to four art. I guess is where. Nf teaser actually technically good things. One of those things that i was not into nf when they came out conceptually like why would i wanna buy or own a digital version of something but i guess nf teaser. "One who can actually pilot the ancient gundem. That's buried underneath mount fuji. It's not none of his. So bloodlines are not significant. The imperial succession doesn't matter. This is not something should be focused on at all If the whole imperial family collapsed day like there was some special disease or bloodlines are important. There was some special disease that only killed in the imperial family. I japan would be fine. Nothing would happen. It would be very upsetting There'd be lots of news. The actual functioning of the company would would be fine. It would not matter at all so his income distribution idea like he wants to raise wages to lower the income gap. I'm on board with the imperial family. That whole deal seems like a massive waste of time. So i'm not a big fan of that It'll be interesting to see where she goes in the future but again i bet we actually stopped talking about him because the dussault born ufo table so the company that produces the anime cancel yaba or demon slayer that is the company's called ufo table. "Last week i said if you went with the polls you could call it. Because konno was the forerunner he was like forty six percent and then kishida was the next guy with seventeen percent and i that was accurate though is factual if you went with the polls you could have called it. And he was the defacto new leader. And that's not what happened. Kushida one to the guy who in second place by less than half the predicted votes won the internal election and He's the new prime minister for the moment and then at the end of october i think they're going to have an actual vote for the party's so he's now. The leader of the party therefore prime minister of japan. He in they're going to have an election to see if the ldp maintains leadership status or how much leadership status. And then i it was weird. It's weird i wasn't cheetah. Was the most boring auction. So what we've learned is that polls don't mean shit which is fair. I mean it's good to know it's good to have that that pointed out every now and then the polls aren't helping you pulls aren't making things better and i went into like find some stuff about kishida again. He doesn't say anything of interest he's boring. I gotta go through my notes The one thing. He said that was interesting that he wants to do. He says he wants to lower the income gap and he wants to do this via salary hikes. Because there's no wealth distribution without growth and no growth without wealth distribution. So it's like a catch twenty two if you don't stimulate one it won't stimulate the other and one cannot happen with the elliott without the other. Big problem in japan is that the country's grown relatively stagnant for a very long time. He's going because he's working with the government. He has control over health care. Workers nurses care workers He's going to give them raises and stuff and then he's going to hope that inspires the private sector to do the same now. Something i've learned as a not running a company kind of person does not how that works. the government doing something it won't inspire private sector do something. The government running a program won't inspire the private sector to run something so shida when he joined the she don't want he won and he became prime minister he gave a speech And it was weird. Because in his speech he said i have a special skill. The special skill of listening to people I don't know i can't he's boring. It's not even the bad. He's just it's like now. Politics is less. I i guess this is it. The problem with interesting politics is usually really bad for everybody in the country so like when trump was in charge it was interesting but socked but i guess.

Fumio Kishida wins Japan leadership race, setting him up to become prime minister

"Japan's ruling liberal democratic party or ldp held its leadership runoff election. The last round was between two former foreign ministers. Kishida fumio and kotaro. Mr kushida came out on top. The ldp has dominated japanese politics since its founding in the nineteen fifties. So the party's new. President will be the country's new prime minister when tsuyoshi he steps down toy so in his victory speech. Mr kishida said that from today. I will with all of my energy. Get straight to work. How and where he will channel that energy though is still something of an open question as is how much. The electorate will support him. This year's election for the presidency was more unpredictable than most heading into the vote. Today there was some some genuine uncertainty about who would emerge the victor noah. Sneider is the economists. Tokyo bureau chief but this kind of free for all uncertain circus like for the mvp at least election campaign. I think really master distracted from deeper and more worrying trend in japanese politics namely growing voter apathy and disillusionment from the political process and given that apathy. How do you think it is that. Mr kishida came out on top. The dynamics of this election were a bit complicated. But let's unpack them. Konno tato former foreign and defense minister was the favourite in public and the favourite amongst younger diet members in the ldp who saw him as potentially more transformative figure who also crucially might help them keep their jobs in elections that are looming in later. This fall masan however is unpopular amongst. The party's old guard and and they see him sort of unreliable uncontrollable. He has a reputation for being a bit of a maverick so he won. The the vote of the rank and file in the first round of the party's election but he didn't win enough support amongst his colleagues to win the election outright so it went into a second round run-off there to she support from within the party really proved decisive. It is i think a result that reflects the enduring strength of the ldp's establishment and is in some ways the kind of rebuke of public

Wet Notes - 9-27-21

"This is wet notes here on scuba shock radio for monday. September twenty seventh two thousand and twenty one first up. I want to congratulate tech clark and a dive locker. Podcast on celebrating the second anniversary for those who don't know about this. Podcast tech. Started this to help die professionals with various topics and techniques. But it's not just for dive professionals. I remember listening to the first episode. Way back in two thousand nineteen just before dima that year i've come to look forward to each weekly episode tech plans to keep the show going and has teed up a lot of great new content for the year year ahead. So i'd encourage you to check out the dive locker podcast. There's a lot of great information and perspective on things that hopefully will give you something to think about. Scuba shack is a proud patron of the dive locker. By the way tech also hosts a podcast titled the league of extraordinary divers. Where you can listen to some of the giants of our industry. Great job tech. Keep it coming now. I don't know what it is. But i seem to be a sucker for a message in a bottle story. So here's another one this time. The story involves a bottle that was washed up on the shores of the big island of hawaii. The bottle started his journey thirty seven years ago from japan and it was put in the water by school children. As part of an experiment in monitoring ocean currents the number of bottles were cast into the ocean in nineteen eighty-four from choshi highschool hawaii's about six thousand kilometers or four thousand three hundred miles from the launch point now. The bottle was found by abbie graham while her family was visiting a beach near hilo. It is estimated that about seven hundred and fifty of these bottles were tossed into the ocean between nineteen eighty four and nineteen eighty five. The last time one was found was in two thousand and two on kake. Jima island overall. The bottles have been found in seventeen. Different locations including okinawa the philippines china and even the west coast of the united states. I just get fascinated by these stories and often wonder just how many messages in bottles are out there in the ocean now. Last week we got an email from the clearly clearly came in resorts and it wasn't good. News clearly came in resorts include cobalt coast on grand cayman. Little came beach resort and cayman. Brac beach resort. The news informed us that the cayman borders will remain closed until two thousand twenty two. Now that's tough at a recent press conference to premier indicated that phase. Three of the original plan will start sometime. In february given the rise in cove in nineteen cases the resorts are now planning on opening on february. Fifth two thousand twenty two. Now this has been a really tough situation. If you remember way back in april i reported that the plan was to open in late april or early may two thousand and twenty one. It's been a long and difficult road for a lot of places. Surely the caymans are feeling abroad. We hope it gets resolved before october. Twenty twenty two trip yet. That on certain there's been a great deal of communication coming from tom. Ingram the president and ceo of dima the dive equipment marketing association regarding the two thousand twenty one show in las vegas. Tom unequivocal be states. That the show has absolutely no plans. Of cancelling now they did indicate that accordance with the local health mandates. Everyone will be required to wear a mask on the exhibit floor. There are several large past exhibitors. Who are forgoing the show this year causing some to question whether it should even take place. I know we've been getting a lot of surveys from our vendors as to whether we plan to go or not right now matt and i will be there. Tom indicated that it would be extremely difficult to cancel at this late date. Given the contracts that are in place and that if it were cancelled it would seriously impact demon's ability to put on these shows in the future. So we're looking forward to a successful show this year out in las vegas and finally today. I wanna talk about a piece of underwater camera gear that you might just want to consider. There was an article from sport diver magazine by john widow titled great camera accessories for underwater photography. It was a scuba lab review of the products that the staff took diving at alexander springs in central florida. First on the list was a sea life. Sport diver smartphone housing. Now that's pretty cool. I can remember my first. Underwater camera was sealife. Reef master with a whopping three mega pixels now. This housing will fit a number of iphones and android smartphones. The housing is bluetooth enabled and his rate it to one hundred and thirty feet. The sea life sport diver smartphone. Housing comes with a vacuum seal and duly alarms when you purchase the housing. You'll get a free app that will give you access to most of your phones. Usual camera functions also included is a red filter. And if that's not enough to housing allows you to put in those sealife life color changing moisture. Munchers he i remember those now. The housing isn't cheap. It retails for two hundred ninety nine dollars and ninety five cents. Us but if you wanna travel light and still get some great underwater shots of your adventures check out the c. What Was Machiavelli's Position on War?

"A quote here That i wanted to ask you about that. Machiavelli said which segues beautifully there is. No avoiding war. It can only be postponed to the advantage of others now. I suppose you could take that a variety of different ways to mean war in the sense that we mean war or is he writing this advice to a political figure. You're saying like if you have you have to crush your political opponents now or else they're only gonna grow stronger. Both you're referring to a quote that comes up from chapter three of the prince. At least the next chapter. He lays out the differences between ancient rome in the way modern politics in its business in modern politics. Machiavelli says there's an inclination that you think that somehow wars avoidable that if you just avoid war it won't come to you. In the context of the coat you're mentioning machiavelli talking about foreign enemies for machiavelli. It's it's natural for human beings to want to expand into acquire and so it's the natural inclination of all governments want row a net means imprint in in japan your own borders and national interests. So then you're caught in arms race so to speak of expanding yourself so machiavelli. He thought that the seeked wrong a classical rome was they never thought war was it. Avoidable always took the fight to their enemies now in the discourses he talks about the same phenomenon domestically he says. Trees Could Be a Mental, Physical and Climate Change Antidote

"Is well known. The trees help counter climate change by soaking up carbon dioxide. Now there is a growing body of research to point to many ways of dose of trees can improve our mental and physical health. Here's martha bebinger member station. W. b. you are on how and why the tiny sapling robin williams planted thirty years ago towers above her boston home. I raise this tree when i raised my children and look at this look at that. She says there's something about being near this tree. It makes everybody a little bit happy around here when you're looking for strength you can't do better than looking at a tree and there's evidence williams may will be gleaning any number of direct or associated health benefits a longer life. Bitter birth outcomes lower stress levels lower risk of heart disease. Dr howard lumpkin. Is it the university of washington school of public health. Lower risk of diabetes reduced symptoms of adhd proximity to trees is associated with a ridiculously broad range of health benefits. I wish we had pills. That were this good for health. A few countries notably japan and south korea have invested in a practice known as forest bathing which is spending time among trees as a preventive health measure but prescribing time in nature is still pretty far outside mainstream medicine in the. Us from can says that. Maybe because there's a lot we don't know what doses needed. Do you need to walk. Among trees is sufficient just to look at the trees from outside your window. Do you need big trees or do small trees do the trick we you know. We're not able to tease the forest from the trees. Peter james at harvard medical school aims to answer a lot of those questions. He's merging health data captured by phones. Real time surveys about wellbeing and mood and street. View mapping data to dig into. What's exactly within view. Is it trees. Is it flowers and how those things are related to help behaviors and health outcomes.

Australia Joins Pact With Britain and the United States Against China

"A new security partnership announced this week is going to have big consequences. August's and alliance between america britain and australia. His squarely aimed at one region because the future of our nations. Indeed the world depends on a free and open it up. Pacific the deal will cover diplomatic and security cooperation but most significant is the defense end of the pact including australia obtaining its first nuclear powered submarines momentous decision for any nation to acquire this formidable capability but australia is one of our oldest friends kindred nation for australia the agreement goes far beyond existing groupings with america such as the five is security block or the new quad tie up with india and japan. We must now and to a partnership that seeks to engage not to exclude. They contribute not type and to an idol. How not to control. Choas is another sign of america's shift away from european concerns and towards the pacific and a growing international alignment against that region's biggest. Worry when the leaders announced this new pact. None of the mentioned china but everyone knows this is all about china. The alliance reflects a shed fair from all three countries about the consequences of china's rising power in asia. Shot joshi is the economists defense editor. Australia is set to become just the seventh country in the world to operate a nuclear power submarine after america britain china france india and russia. But this has gone down incredibly badly with european allies particularly with franz who is completely blindsided by the pact.

Sebastian Reminisces About His Time in the Oval Office With Donald Trump

"Me share a story here. I was in the oval office with president trump. Just the two of us which rarely happens. The oval office has Well it has an entrance way from the out of office and then it has a little narrow door that goes to private eating area and little place for the president. Just sit and read. Didn't be by himself. And then it has the door to the the west wing where guests come through so you rarely in there alone. I was in with the most powerful man in the world and it is a humbling feeling truly as an immigrant to the united states. Somebody who wasn't born here. Who has an accident who always will who only became a citizen. Three years prior to be alone in the oval office is something yukon express. And i was in there on other business if i remember. Well i think it was Iran deal I was one of the two people though building. In addition to the president wanted to kill the iran deal. God bless into finally doing in the face of people like hr mcmaster tillerson mnuchin. All the other fake america first. And i was about to leave still talking about something to do with iran and the president looked at is hand. He got this very serious expression. Yeah he's a very jovial person. It's to great great sense of humor. But suddenly his face froze who's reminded of something on that piece of paper or just something came to mind when he said i really don't want americans to die on the korean peninsula. I did not want to get us into another shooting war in korea. He understood the threat. Remember the hermit kingdom under kim launching ballistic missiles over the japan intimidating our friends in our allies but despite never having said he went to a military high school but despite never having served he really undestood the weight. "Has been dealt with has been busted suddenly forgot my tv police drama language anyways. They're six vietnamese guys. They were smuggling ecstasy into japan. It's very interesting because it was two thousand tablets total It said eight hundred and twenty six grams. I assuming the two thousand tablets. Equal eight hundred and twenty six grams but the total value of the two thousand tablets was eight million yet. We just four thousand yen per tablet. Which is. I don't know if that's a good deal or not. I don't know how much drugs cost a couple times. I've sent on the podcast. I've actually never done any illegal drugs and it's not like a judge anyone else. When i was in high school all my friends they all did acid. They smoked weed. They did all the things you're supposed to do. When you're young and trying all this stuff i didn't i was scared. Is actually the most honest answer secondary answers. I was doing a lot of athletics. And i was worried about getting caught more than anything else so. I don't know how much you would pay for that four thousand yet. i know. Ecstasy lasts for a long time so four thousand yen seems like a lot but at the same time not very much because it's a whole evening's entertainment. The problem i have with this is singular and it's because they smuggled in in dried shrimp so they put the xc in bags and they put the bags inside the dried shrimp and then they put it in boxes and then brought the boxes through. Maybe they were hoping that the shrimp smell we throw off the drug sniffing dogs. My problem is the smell of dried. Shrimp is disgusting. They have a lot of shrimp based foods. Snacks in japan dried crackers with shrimp powder chips and stuff in japan. You open a bag near me. And i will leave the room. They're just horrendous. So i cannot see ecstasy being effective. I can't see being a good thing. I can't see it working if smells like dried trip because it's no longer ecstasy anymore. It's dried with ecstasy in it and dried. Shrimp is gonna take all the ecstasy out of your life. I'm not judging these guys on their crime smuggling drugs. I don't know their situation. I am judging them on their choice because they're actually just.

"Standing close to each other people should space out. That's going to be really hard thing to do in Japan where everything is packed in tight as humanly possible. All the time talking about food. Walk you beef. We've mentioned it before we've mentioned about how they're trying to keep the strains pure they're actually trying to basically get copyright actually forget the word for it but they wanted the patent may be the genome or the genes of the wabe strain. So that would keep it. You know you can say it's actually officially real wad you beef. And what isn't one of the problems they were having with people trying to steal genetic material and try to raise similar cows in other countries. And of course that wouldn't be real beef. It would have the same system the same care things like that. This is really important to them. But they have birthed a calf born from freeze dried semen so now they can keep the best seamen sort of on tap and create the best. Wasiyu beef going forward because they will be able to pick the best semen that goes into the best cows to produce the best cast a thirty kilogram calf was born. It's an excellent health. It is destined to be devoured by people. But at least they'll appreciate it. I guess because that's just the circle of life now freeze dried semen into a wonderful new life that will be torn apart by the mulling jaws of humanity. And that's your final note from engineers Japan this day. Wash your hands. Wash your face you know. Stay safe stay away from people. Be careful of the love hotel if you're participating in those activities Most important of all. It seems like if you have good semen you can get that freeze dried now..

"Gel when you make a reservation you get a map of the airplane and you actually can pick your seat so like I being taller usually pick an all seats that I can kind of see the station if he has actually been doing it every three days for the last two years we're talking probably hundreds of people at this point so if there are injuries that have been reported he could be charged with everyone of those injuries and absolutely deserve to be because this is kind of that weird dumb thinking that bullies have that they've gone on a righteous path they're teaching other people and if they would actually all just behavior way he wants them to everything would be okay but he doesn't seem to realize he's a massive asshole an employee of a security company thought he had the perfect scheme in the scheme was I'm GonNa Steal Three hundred and sixty million and no one will notice he did a couple of interesting things though so he put the money he took the money out of a safe and put it in a big cardboard boxes the three hundred sixty millions a lot of pieces of paper so he just carried that cardboard box out of work now the first suspicious act I don't think anyone noticed him walking out of the building with a cardboard box but the fact that they know that the happened means they figured it out or he's actually just admitted to it he didn't show up for work for two days after the theft so he spent those two days hiding the money but if you don't show up for work the next day and a whole bunch of money's gone missing people are GonNa go maybe that guy stole the money then weirdly he returned to work so the timing is suspicious so maybe he realized off I don't show up for work they're gonNA suspect me they're gonna come after me and I will get and so I should go back to work but then what the police did with some some good detective work there's let's find out what he was doing for those two days no he was seen going to a hotel in he had a bad backpacking two suitcases but the hotel was within his own city so why did he have so much luggage luggage was full of the money and he wanted to disperse that money to make sure if he got caught he would have money sort of hidden in places that he'd be able to get to later so he did an interesting thing he took bits of the money and he put them in bags and he hit those bags in coin lockers that are salable around Tokyo so if you're a tourist you put your your bag in this locker you pay for it and then and then off you go you can have your day or a couple of days of fun and not have to worry about carrying your bag with your it's a very nice thing that they have I'm sure it's available all over the world lots places have when he was caught when he was arrested he had one point seven million yen on him now that is a lot of money to carry around now Japan is still very much a cash based society so people do carry enormous sums of money with them clearly but one point seven million is still a bit beyond that especially for a guy who's just working a regular day job if you were a movie star if you were a pop singer if you're one of these this who's basically a famous person that wouldn't be so strange but if you are a guy who works for a security company that is a bit too much for you to have on you and that is suspicious so when he was arrested he.

"Hundred and seventy seven kilograms so congratulations Japan is seen as very polite society it's sort of as a standard higher than that of other nations and people have to learn to adjust to the standards of Japanese etiquette and how to live in your day to day life the thing is that doesn't mean Japan is exempt from Tom Dick heads and assholes and things like that that's of course where this story is going there was a man who felt like it was his destiny his obligation listen to educate other people and it seems specifically women that if they were walking while using a smartphone it would be a really good idea for him to slam into them now they do not choose this language by accident he is not bumping them he is not nudging them hard he is slamming into them because people actually have been physically injured by this is a forty nine year old man and he was slamming into women who were walking while using their smartphones he said as a warning around Tokyo this station called Meizhou brushing my and in this is where most of these incidents took place that's how he got caught because he wasn't going around doing it in different areas clearly he takes his train to or from work or something like that and if you saw woman on her smartphone he would walk into them and hit them as hard as he could he stated two years ago I slammed into another woman she went tumbling down the stairs since it's dangerous so he's referring to walking while looking at your smartphone I slam into people to warn them once every three days so I don't know why he's chosen once every three days maybe he just means like twice a week but there have been two other women physically hurt and taken to hospital because of this kind of behavior one had some broken bones they don't say what maybe just broke her little finger when she fell down broke a leg so that was really unclear I think that's one of the things it the severity of the injury actually does mean something but the second one she hit her head one of the conversations I actually was having yesterday with a friend was how easily it is to kill yourself just by hitting your head like we're talking about like fights in high school in guy gets hit he falls down hits his head on the concrete and dies and you just think of how easy it is to your head and kill yourself but I find a couple of points about this interesting because he saying that walking while looking at your smartphone is dangerous but I'm pretty sure slamming into people on purpose is just as if not more dangerous especially because he's doing it clearly quite violently enough to knockdown other human beings and the only people mentioned in this are women and I get the feeling that also might be on purpose because he being a man is probably bigger and he thinks he stronger than women and if there ends up being some sort of incident he can either run away or take the more but you can see his he's not attacking people or educating people who are bigger and stronger than him he's picking on people who are I assume smaller and weaker because I'm betting if I was walking along on my smartphone he would not slam into me because first of all I don't know how big he is but I you know being in Japan I bet I'm bigger she probably bounce off me I've actually had that before I had some guys do the like shoulder bump while I was walking in the subway and his shoulder just bounced off mine because I was moving forward and it's a it's a mass in weight and momentum Kelly relation that he clearly had not studied physics enough to put that together so this guy has been arrested and I'm assuming they're going to charge him with multiple incident senses of assault because it's been three women mentioned in the story but there have been more incidences in.

"Okay in Japan Airlines generally known as touch my legs out into the aisle and trip people as they walk by and it's an interesting way to do it because it's like you can see what seats are empty and what's ether taking you'll actually have a sense of how fully your airplane is before you get on it they have made an update to their system and the update is they're going to put a little smiley face on some seats now those little smiley faces this actually mean there's going to be a baby or a toddler sitting in that seat so this gives you the passenger who may be does not have a child toddler or something with you the ability to sit as far away as physically possible from those babies who quite frankly may spend a significant portion of the flight mule ing and braying and doing what babies and children do some people have thought this is a great idea and some people have thought it really unfair and it's kind of shaming parents I don't honestly as someone who's traveled who has been in both positions I have had babies and I have them on airplanes and I have flown on airplanes with other people's babies and my babies have screamed and other people babies so once you've been the parent you don't get as angry at the people who have the babies because you understand they don't Wanna be there they do not want to be on an airplane with a baby no one actually does there making that baby to whatever country they're taking into out of some sort of obligation. I of course had to take my kids to Canada so that my parents could meet their grandkids and this was of course a very big deal for them and it had to be done I did not WanNa make the flight I did not want to take the baby on the flight and I spent a significant portion of the flight stand ending holding the baby trying to walk around and move and I actually had some dude walk up to me so the baby's crying he's not freaking out but he was crying he's unhappy and he started sticking his finger in my baby's face and going you just have to know how to do it and he made it significantly I I think people seem to believe they are better with other people's children than they are because one of the first things you have to do is actually know the child and what they're going to like and dislike in sticking your finger in childrens face was not a way to calm them down or make them feel better maybe this worked in his family unit I do not know I do know that I had an intense inst- desire to kick him in the chest and hopefully into the door knocking the door off bringing the airplane down into the water and killing us all of course but at the same time this is gel the other reason it doesn't matter is it sound Carey so if you are in the mid or back part of the plane and the babies up at the front you're still going to hear the baby it might be less but at the end of the day you're never escaping a baby because you're both in the same tube this become a reoccurring story in the news and it comes up now semi regularly I actually Kinda stopped doing it because as I think these are kind of slow news days or they want to get something involving the word Japan and sex in it because that that makes clicks in the word virgin also makes it sort of ha ha look at these Japanese people who are all virgins yet it is a significant problem this is referred to in a recent article that I read had as Japan's sex recession and what they're saying is one in every ten males in Japan is a virgin they haven't had any sort of sexual relationships and what was addressing I don't know if this was done on purpose but it was referred to as the surging virginity rate and I could only think it would be really entertaining to write an article like this and put it in his any sort of Phallic things as possible and yet still play it off as if you didn't know you were doing that on purpose is a phallic increase in the amount of virgin and Japan's only like that but I don't write these articles and that might be the reason why the real concern here is that there's already a population decline in Japan there more old people than young people and they start dying off the population's going to diminish significantly and the problem is there aren't enough babies being born to replace them and right now predictions are saying the population of Japan will decline by half over the next fifty years if nothing changes people in general in these articles blame a couple of set things it's almost like violence and then violence is blamed on video games those kind of arguments it's like they bring up something that they can an attack even if that thing doesn't make sense now the first one does sort of make logical sense it's the long work hours and the poor work life balance that is partially true but when they find studies the number of virgins who work these long hours inconsistent and that's one of the more important things because the reason I started talking about this article that I read is because it actually did some interesting statistics because it seems that job security and financial the insecurity are the actual issues that contribute to people remaining virgins for long times and that would imply that if you don't have any money you don't have money to go out coach you don't have money to go out you can't meet a partner you can't have a sexual relationship with that partner and therefore you remain a virgin there is the instability that this it creates makes it difficult for you to forge long-term fruitful relationships is what they found within the various age-groups is that part time workers are four times more likely to be virgins than people with stable regular jobs unemployed people are eight times more likely which is very clear that it actually has very little to do with the long work hours because the people who have the long work hours in this statistically are actually having the most sex or they have the least number of virgins so they have had sex so it seems that the unclear future the Kulti's young people are having to survive is what is actually having the negative impact because these numbers are consistent and that's something that the theory of long work hours doesn't account for so what actually needs to do I still think work life balance important because if everyone has a job that's great if everyone has a job in their exhausted you still have problems with birth rate but it shows that stability is one of the things that creates long in relationships and long lasting relationships lead to people having sexual intercourse and therefore hopefully producing children in meaning that Japan the country will not disappear in the future this takes us to a secondary story now there's a party in Japan it's very fringe recalled the anti NHK party may NHK's the National Broadcasting Service and they charge fees we've talked about it several times on engineers Japan they are supposed to collect fees from every house but there's no punishment for not doing or at least there hasn't been until recently the problem is they use like collection agencies in those collections and Caesar Bits Shady sometimes using the imitation tactics and stuff so people don't like that aspect and also people high up in the NHK like ten years ago all got not going on holidays and using public funds to live fairly lavish lifestyles and people are saying well why am I paying H K fees if these guys are using that money to go on holidays the whole point is supposed to be paying for television and NHK programming while some of it's very good it's public broadcasting so a lot of it is not in that somebody keep in mind so there is thirty that it was set up to demolish the NHK's kind of their catchphrase now for some reason they were talking about overpopulation which again is not the problem Japan spring from I think they were talking about overpopulation of the planet the leader of the anti-itch case Ed to put it roughly we should wipe out races that have babies like Eddie his although he personally has no motivation to do so so what the man is saying is the overpopulation of the world could be solved if we committed genocide which is a very radical position to take especially in Japan which is honestly very pacifist peace-loving nation that wasn't an off he had to explain his position isn't it good for things to be natural natural order God created people killing each other as part of God's system to the I read this in text this was not an interview that I read on TV or something so it's very difficult for me to gleam the actual feeling behind these statements was he making it very extreme joke or is he actually serious that we and I don't know who he is because I don't think he means Japan should go out and commit genocide in countries overpopulated I think he just means other people should do that and we should just sit by and let it happen but the real problem is I can't tell if he seriously not the getting rid of the NHK is his serious platform and they would like to do that they do say a lot of other stuff that's weird and yet they are trying to be taken seriously as a political already so I don't think they're going to have much success if the leader keeps saying things like this an interesting record has been a Steve I guess in Japan and it was the volume of cocaine seized from a freighter arriving in a place called Toyohashi was one hundred and seventy seven kilograms and that is more in one take then all of last year so last year piece seized one hundred and fifty five kilograms of cocaine nationwide so that means every port every airport everywhere they were able to catch people with cocaine if all put into a pile was one hundred fifty five kilograms so that was sort of not necessarily a record but this one shipment is.

"Airplane may have been a chinese when this was a while ago since i don't focus on career stories i didn't actually write it down so i'm just doing this off memory but they were shooting at airplanes in the sky taking yourself out of this agreement to have more information because of basically historical article events you're just doing despite which is absolutely why they're doing it but honestly the world is bigger than that. It doesn't seem like the best idea so this is going to continue continue and i'm just wondering how far it's going to go before someone actually goes look. We have to solve this problem because it doesn't seem like it's going to be the japanese apennines. It doesn't seem like it's going to be the koreans and i'm wondering if trump is going to make this better or worse because he is actually the leader of america in america is the country they would both look to to sort of help solve this problem so basically the world's in trouble enrolling in die drones have mentioned i think three or four times on the podcast now because flying drones overcrowding has been made illegal in japan of course you know that then includes there are certain areas where you aren't allowed to fly drones that was probably pretty pretty obvious like you're not allowed to fly a drone over the prime minister's house. I mean probably the same in every country not allowed to fly drones over certain places. The imperial palace and japan is one of those places a man was arrested and he flew over a very crowded park outside the imperial palace and then fluid over the palace. That's actually to lousy. Brooke not allowed to fly drones overcrowded people and you're not allowed to fly over the imperial palace. He was arrested has been brought to prosecutors probably again not a massive thing. He's probably just gonna get a fine. Maybe get his drone taken away from him his statement though i knew it was a prohibited place but i wanted to try out the drone near the imperial palace so basically easily he just says i know it was bad but i wanted to do it anyway. That's not a very good defense but it also turns out. He just bought the drone clearly not a man who makes good decisions because you buy a drone i. I don't think that's a bad decision. I think they're really expensive and overpriced for what people are getting out of them but you know drone footage is really cool but if you just bought a drone and then immediately said i'm going to start doing uh-huh legal things with it you probably aren't the kind of person should have a drone in the first place you can tweet questions or comments at new genucel japan or joined the facebook group on facebook such an engineer's japan japan visit ninja news japan dot com for links to i tunes or subscription options. Thank you for listening sexy at hamis in our last three the day. I'm gonna make really short because it is underwear. Theft can't stop doing underwear theft. An underwear underwear thief was caught. He had two hundred pairs of underwear when they went and sacked his house. It's his second arrest in two months for stealing underwear. You're so no sympathy there hasn't he's clearly one of these guys who just does it the only but there was interesting was he said i want to steal underwear when i drink alcohol so he is now somehow connected the relaxing pleasure of drinking alcohol with going out and stealing when women's underwear. I'm not even gonna do this story.

"Out so it seems like in japan if you are particularly attractive and i think there's probably true all over the world because there is there have been studies that have shown that attractive people just have better lives cbs overall. They get treated better. People are more likely to believe them. <hes> they get lighter sentencing in court and whatnot but it plays out even more so in japan where physical attractiveness is so so overtly acceptable and they talk about it and it's so open. It's an interesting cultural phenomenon because i think it happens in other cultures but they don't. I want to admit it whereas in japan it's very overt. There has been a lot of tension between japan korea south korea lately. There's always tension between in japan and north korea so that actually that doesn't need to be said but sometimes south korea and japan are very good friends and sometimes they hate each other recently in korea area. They went after mitsubishi said because of wartime enslavement. You need to pay these families of workers x. Amount of money and japan's like we've done this before we paid the money. We're not doing it again and this has gone back and forth but it's really soured relations between the two countries and this brought anything that includes both a japanese person and a korean person to the forefront of the news. We have two stories. The first one is a ministry of health bureaucrat. A japanese ministry of health bureaucrat in korea was drunk and of course as we learned from our police story earlier. Being drunk does not equate well with making good decisions. His flight was delayed or it was late or he wasn't allowed to board quickly enough. Maybe he was one of these self important people who thought he should get on first and he decided that the adult solution to this problem was to start shouting. I hate koreans in english so as a professional english teacher for many many years. I'm happy that he's decided to take on english. Ah the international language but it seems like an ineffective way to display your anger actually found that more koreans per capita spoke english functionally optionally than japanese do so they were actually very likely to understand what he was saying but he was just basically ranting and raving saying 'i hickories maybe he was just taking it out on the korean staff. Maybe he wasn't being racist but that is being incredibly generous considering the sentiments of old people in both countries it ended up with an out of court settlement that means he. She probably paid off the staff that he was abusing and he also received a one month suspension. He was punished..

"Like that but i bet he wouldn't have had to pay the whole charge but of course poor judgment and alcohol go together so because he was drunk. I don't think he has forgotten everything. I think what happened was does he was drunk and got angry and started swinging at people and now he's just looking for a way out so once again disappointed that the police don't seem to understand crime as well as a regular other person like me also. It's not sensible for cop to be going into a place where they haven't posted the charges clearly he should know. That's a scam going in. I i have very little sympathy for this man <hes> he's gonna get in trouble but he's not going to get fired anything so at the end of the day who cares a twenty three three year old woman is in trouble because she has formed a relationship with a twelve year old boy she met online in a phone game and it was the game knives out which i've seen ads for but it never played. It's like a pub g thing as my own aside i. I'm always amazed that people actually are find ways to connect over mobile games because there's no no real chat that and i know of i've never played knives out so i don't know if there's chatter anything but i mean i have never had the game and i'm talking about the the player game not game video radio game player game but like the i've already explained this incorrectly. I've never had the smooth moves. There's some some hot hip lingo for you to connect act with someone in at any real deep way on the internet i certainly i could probably never get a date tinder in something like that would be an absolute failure for me unless they were really into like interesting facts about bats in echo location. 'cause that is my immediate. Instinct is just make fun of the whole process of the bus trying to get to know each other over the internet and chat so i'm kinda glad i missed this segment of society where people meet on apps apps and programs and chats and stuff because i've not good at it so i would have been a failure at that no question. This woman went to this boy's house. He took him to a love hotel. So that's already statutory rape. She's in trouble for rape <hes> and then she's also in trouble for your child pornography because she actually took pictures and maybe videos of them kissing there was nothing particularly explicit but it is still her properly kissing a very young boys boy. That's child porn now stuck on top of it. A couple of interesting facts came out. She already has two children now. She's twenty three. Her first. Child is five in her second. Child is three three. She had the kids when she was in high school in the father was in middle school so her friends said she has always been shattuck on which was a word. Maybe you're japanese. He's word for this week. Despite the the lesson about i at the beginning of the episode if you have read about japanese stuff you've heard of lowly khan and this is basically basically lolita complex and so they stuck those two words together you get lonely and that is adult men being into really young women that would in my mind. It's still apply if you change the genders but of course in japan. They came up with another one..

"Purpose. It's deceptive because he actually i think hit the bouncer so oh he's in trouble for assaulting a man employees outside of the club which would imply the person lets you in or the bouncer or someone like that he he punched one male employees and then bit another one on the head so i'm again my images set it's like did he just grab someone invite their hand end randomly. I bet that's not what happened at the guy grabbed him and then he bit his hand because it was close to his face or something like that but this is a police officer so i was expecting being of course the highest caliber of excuse from the police officer for assaulting people in the public he said since i was drunk i do not recall now. I've heard that excuse many many times which i assume that means the police officer has heard that excuse daily since he got his job and i'm betting it. It doesn't hold up. This is of course just a denial of any facts like maybe i was there. You probably prove i was there. There's probably cameras and whatnot but i don't remember it. I'm not giving you any details. This is the pleading the fifth of japan so i was drunk. I don't remember so have being drunk means. It's difficult to remember things a little fuzzy. I get what's going on. There saying plead the fifth <hes> using alcohol is my premise the dispute. Why did he punch him in and bite. Another man's hand was actually a dispute over how much she was charged in the hostess clubs and this is something you have to be aware of. Should you ever come to japan. So if you go to a regular place all the prices will be displayed on the menu or it'll be up on the wall. If it's a place where this system a hostess clubs assistance you pay per hour so you pay x. amount amount to come in and talk to a hostess that would be like a flat rate. Sometimes drinks would be included included sometimes not this is actually kind of a scam what they do is they get you drunk and then they hand you a massive bill so one of the warnings to anyone who would travel to japan. This isn't just hostess clubs. This happens in other places like gambling places in anywhere else but if you do not see anywhere a price list if it's not posted on the wall all if they don't send you a menu. They don't explain the system to you in advance. There is a very good chance that they will try to scam you at the end of the night by overcharging us significantly. Oh that bottle of whiskey that you drank well that was actually a ten million yen bottle of whiskey and you're like no. He was jack daniels. It's like five hundred yen in the store well. This is the bill. You have to pay your your bill. Let's go to your a._t._m. Or give your credit card right now and we'll just charge it and it'll be done otherwise. We're going to threaten you with lawsuits and woman so i'm thinking maybe the staff actually tried to scam this guy this police officer. He's a cop so he knows it's a scam. She got angry at them but then he started deccan people so i'm betting if he just called the police his cohorts by the way he probably could have gotten this to squared away like maybe he would have had to pay the flat rate or something like.

"The basically the point of the survey is there's a ton of different ways to refer to yourself to say i or me in japanese some of emmer cooler than others. Some of them were more appealing to women so you're gonna learn a bunch of japanese word to refer to yourself and whether or not women liked because there is also japanese the way men speak and the way women speaks woman speaks like a man. It sounds different. It sounds weird to them. They don't like it and if a man talks like a woman again it's the same deal. It doesn't sound natural so this is maybe hetero normative which is a word i've only used like two times in my life once right after learning what it meant which was only two years ago but anyways the sixth one was tied and the word was why or utah number five was chee chee. I've only heard used once number. Six affects the way and i've actually never heard people use them in regular conversation. That might have a lot to do with the region. I live in because regional dialects are very big thing in japan so i've heard one person you succi and it was a girl using it in reference to herself and she was kind of doing it. I really so she was using like a male term to refer to herself and and to draw attention to the statement he was making because basically i'd given everyone doughnuts and she went. Which was the same saying like well. What about me but she went. She made it really strong by by using the word ritchie number four. You may have heard this. If you study japanese. It's used fairly regularly gebran. I use jebron when i talk about preparing things for some reason so like i did it by myself. I would say jeb when something like that number. Three is what touchy which is like the first one you'll learn and i think it's the one this the way they're saying it in. This is actually a little more formal so it's perhaps the least useful because it makes you sound like like you. Learning japanese is one of the things i learned so the first phrase you learn is probably going to be my name is or i am so that's going to be what i she walked he sees and that's that's great good on your learnings from japanese but then you'll realize really quickly that nobody says that it'd be very formal and it would be very rare that you actually talk to people and actually use what touchy when you're speaking so you're gonna use number one or number two number. Two is the nice way to say it. It's boko and it's one that i use a lot number one. I was actually surprised because it's supposed to be the tough way. But of course this is what these women find attractive active in or appealing for the way men refer to themselves so it's the manley est way in its own and if you do read anime and stuff you see all the men are going to say all day while when while they're saying saying me and they're saying it in a strong way so that could be your japanese lesson for today that seven ways to say the word i for men but again my my example from lucia was actually woman using it in a in a unique fashion to don't let it deter you and also you have to know what other people are saying. Even if you're a woman you never decide to use any of these words words because most of them are unisex buna touchy beaucoup. Those are all used by both autopay is a strong why because i've never heard people use them. I'm i'm not actually sure as to their proper usage something. I would have to look into which right now. I'm not gonna do that's a cop was arrested outside a hostess club and they actually the titles of the articles i read was like cop assaults employees at hostess club which would imply say that the cop assaulted a hostess and i think that's a more lucious title to get you drawn in because that was clearly my first image because hostess clubs most of the employees would the women so a cop punching woman. That's a that's more scandalous story and i think it was written that way on purpose..

"Magazines. It's all rumors and stuff like that and they did serve and that's of course going to be one of the best surveys because magazines means do the most scientific survey they surveyed one hundred people just very small sample size and it was thirty to thirty nine year old women exclusively and the question was how do you like men to refer to themselves so really the question is you're gonna make it more easy to understand english. What usage edge of i should a man use when referring to himself because in japanese this is your japanese lesson for this week. There are a lot of different ways to say. I one of the things i learned one. I started learning japanese properties. There aren't really that many bad words. It's the usage of the words you could say you. You should leave the way i would be mean to someone is the level or the words. I choose to say you should leave. I wouldn't say you're an asshole because that doesn't really the translate very well the way you do is you talk down to people so you talk to them like they're beneath you and use the very specific language to say mean things. I i did learn a song. I had some kids teach me a song and it was all different ways to call someone in idiot so they had a whole and bukavu which he probably if you've interest in japan you've heard buckle before it's in a lot of anime a who is basically the same thing he just means more on radiant but then it got all into vegetables so calling doing someone a pumpkin is the same as calling someone stupid calling someone a cucumber or carrot or something like that is also calling them stupid. There's an interesting side note..

"<music> thank god you thinking it's tuesday. Mine engineers japan came out today day. It usually comes out on thursdays. I huge amount of people don't even notice because they just get it on the weekend or whatever i decided to switch my i to podcasts so ninja news. Japan will come out on tuesday. Veloce podcast will now come out on thursday because i do my recording on tuesday which means i do all my notes notes on tuesday morning so my research from the week is culminated on a tuesday. This being news oriented spite the fact. It's only a few days. I figured it'd be better to to have the news be as fresh as possible because it is relatively timely. I know if you're listening to this podcast. You're not really worried about timely news because it's not actually what we're doing here. The loss of podcast because it's just opinions and talk in general stuff doesn't actually matter if it comes out at any time so it's essentially supposed to be timeless so i figured the swap made more sense so tuesday's because i record engineers japan will now becoming on tuesdays philosophy podcasts if you listen to that becoming out on thursdays if you don't i mean you can subscribe to it or not. I'm not gonna push you. I'm not one of these lichens subscribe guys. It's not early. This week is just this is what it's going to be from now on you. You probably don't care. I basically just update my podcast once a week. Sometimes i think i should start a survey podcast like not focused on japan. I i have another podcast in it's focused on general topics but i ended up talking about surveys a lot and i really enjoy talking about surveys. I used to teach a class at a big steel import company in english class for a high level executive assistant so it was all really nice ladies who were assistance to the president of the company vice presidents and the board of directors and stuff so they were all really really smart. I started bringing in for them. A chart of the week charts most often come come from <hes> surveys in the like. I mean i know it's just visual representations of information but they do. They do base a lot of the stuff on surveys and that's interesting information at first they thought it was really funny is kind of this weird quirky thing the teacher did but then after a while they got really into it and they started really look forward to the chart of the week a lot of the stuff on ninjas japan almost weekly we hit surveys and i just really enjoy the survey content and i was thinking i could branch out. I don't have time to make another podcast. I'm already working on about four or five projects at the same time so i don't really have time to start another podcast a should i ever end up having time to do you nothing but podcasting professionally. I think that might be an interesting direction going but anyways joshi spot so spa is a fairly fairly common name in japan for you know garbage magazines..
