Nelson 3 hitless innings wins debut, Yanks' win 5th in row

"Can keep rolling right along after last night's five to win over the visiting Red Sox gave them five W's in a row and ran their record to a baseball best six and one on the season. James Paxton takes the mound for the Sunday night series finale. Less than 24 hours after manager Aaron Boone rookie Nick Nelson come out of the bullpen to work three hitless innings and pick up a win in his major league debut is I've talked about really since spring and on through summer camp, you know one of the things I'm so excited about his AA lot of the young arms that are knocking on the door, and now Nelson's one of those, you know, and he was. He was great tonight and relief of Masahiro Tanaka was making his season debut coming back from that concussion. Now, If you're planning ahead, the Yanks have had yet another change in their schedule. They'll host the Phillies tomorrow and Tuesday, then play in Philadelphia Wednesday and Thursday before a four game series down a Tampa Bay, which includes a Saturday double header. As for the

"In the sixth inning, replaced by my talk men, and then after the game, Boone said, Well, listen, We just want to give him a little bit arrest then when he's not starting the next game, even though he wanted to play and Boone is saying, well, we want to maybe get ahead of what potentially could be an injury and he said, as you mentioned a very hockey term, lower body fatigue or lower body tightness. For for for Karen Judge, it could be anything of the hip, The calf. Whatever it might be. Legs are a little tired. You don't He's been right now up until this stage nearly 1/3 of the season, right. They're neck and neck with Mike Trout for being the M V p of the American League. I mean that if you put anything weight into it, that's just how good are in judge has been. You hope that it's nothing that trickles and you hope that he's in the lineup when this Red Sox series gets going Because they need number 99 he has been brilliant this year. Get me nine home runs 20 RV eyes, 16 runs in slugging percentage, 7 58 and the guy is having an unbelievable season. So I get the abundance of caution. Right, Ideo? You look at what just happened with Giancarlo Stanton. And if you have Eren judges feeling anything, especially this week, where it was easy because of the off day today, it's easy Tio to steal a day for him, and that's really how I took. It was stealing a day. I know that You know, you might want to raise an eyebrow and save Maggie. Come on. I mean, considering the history and considering you know that you know, Aaron judges had trouble staying healthy and all of it hasn't been his fault. But still like, how could you not be a little bit concerned? We'll see. We'll see. It's just like I think they looked at the Braves last night, too, and said, All right, we got brave throwing a bullpen game. You know, we're not overly concerned you never overlooking anyone, but probably thought that they were going to be able to get some offense going last night. So did you. Did you think it was it helped Because it got Clint Frazier. You're just able to just slide him right in there to play right Field for judge, and that was just easy. You know you're right. You hope that's just in abundance of caution. You're right, Maggie. I hope it's just that that's what I hoped for. I don't want it to be something where it's something that that hangs on with him for the next three or four or five days because he was in such a rhythm offensively. That you want to watch and judge up at the plate every single time because of what he conduce the damage that he could do with the baseball, So I'll take boon for his word of it. But, Maggie, we we took Boone at his word a couple nights ago after the game where he basically said, Hey, listen, nothing to see here. I took him out of the game, You know, figured, give him a little bit of time. You know, he was coming off a game in which he played You know, four games in three days on hard turf down there in Tampa. We're just doing this to take care of the player. Nothing, No big deal, And then he's out of the line up the next day. So I mean, what would I believe? A boob like, you know, like, But listen, I mean, what do you say? We don't even know what it is. Lower body. We have no idea what that is. I mean, so you know, I think it's just all I think the person I think it just codeword for arrest. I mean, I hope that it's not just it's not actually something that's barking at him. And especially, you know, air judge with the last injury, it was the impossibility was had a diagnosis. You know, they couldn't find the thing. How many MRI's did the guy have? I mean, it was It was crazy, So obviously you're hoping it's It's nothing like that. He's on a tear. But in the meantime, it did give Clint Frazier a chance to show what he could do Low. Mayhew a chance to show what he could Dio and No, There's more decisions that the Yankees will have to make it. The end of the year, which you know is it just is all connected most because you have Tanaka on Ly four innings last night wasn't brilliant, you know, but fine and He's gonna have to be, you know, evaluated. And what do they think about Tanaka? You know, moving forward. What is Tanaka want, right? I mean, Tanaka has a tot of value because of how his postseason expertise I would say, And just how valuable that is to a team is immeasurable. So is Tanaka looking for a three year deal? Is that something that the Yankees would want to do? What about James Paxton? I mean, that was gonna be a tough evaluation. This season to begin with, because Paxton's a coming off of back surgery be global pandemic shortens the season 2 60 games. I mean, that was gonna be a tough evaluation anyway, so it's just a lot. It's all connected. I'm just more curious than anything to see who not only obviously this year and how they delegated bats and how people stay fresh and get their playing time, but ultimately How much the makeup of this Yankees team either stays the same or changes moving forward. Yeah, no doubt is gonna be interesting decisions and a guy that I think about Maggie that plays a massive role in a lot of those decisions is the decision when they decided to acquire Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Moreland's and the trickle down effect the amount of money that he is getting paid. And really what it prevents the Yankees from potentially doing. I mentioned it earlier on the show. I have a hard time envisioning that there's going to be a regular spot for both and du Har and Frasier. Long term on the Yankees, Given what we're watching right now, given the fact you're locked in the hicks Judge is not going anywhere You've got Sten. So you look at that scenario. We talked about pressure on a player and you do feel bad that stands banged up once again, and we do know now with that great one hamstring strain that he's going to be out for the next 3 to 4 weeks. But if Stan is not here, and he has not beloved by Yankee fans by any stretch of the imagination, but it puts more even more pressure on guys. Your guy and du Har. My guy Fraser, two guys, Young Yankees that a lot of Yankee fans really embrace. I want to see a part of this team, but because of stands presence on this team, and he's not going anywhere. Those guys. One of those guys, I think in likelihood is going to be playing there the majority of their career probably someplace else because there's no room at the end. George Shell has shown himself offensively last year was not. It was not an outlier. He's been good. Offensively, it seems like they've got their combination at first base with Voight and Ford at first Gardner's going to be gone. Talk has been a nice role player can play complementary player can play a number of different positions where exactly, you're going to get consistent reps When you've got Stan locked into that D H roll for either and du Har or Frasier, one of them playing left field, conceivably, what do you do with the other one? Yeah, And, you know, I'm reminded always of that comment that how Steinbrenner made and you know, it gets lost a little bit because of the amount of money that they spend on Garrett Cole and they needed coal and they broke the bank for coal right. And so you understand it because it was an absolute necessity, but when he says you shouldn't need a $200 million payroll to win a World Series, I mean, that's not the Yankees like, you know, I don't think Yankee fans would lose their mind over that. But it's something that they're thinking about. And that means you can't pay every single person so they don't listen. These are good problems to have, though they are just it's more interesting than anything because as the Yankee you know, just the juggernaut just keeps chugging along here. They sweep the miniseries with the Braves Day off today and then start up with the Red Sox for a wraparound Siri's this weekend. All very interesting things want to hear from you put the poll question out at Mmm W. F A. N Playing hypotheticals a little bit having some fun. We asked you if the Yankees could on Lee Keep one of these impending free agents. Who do you want it to be? D. J. Lo Mayhew, Masahiro Tanaka, James Paxton and normally a position player would have a shot in a poll like that against two pictures, right, especially not pictures of proven track records in the postseason..

"I have every confidence in the world. I mean, we all see what he's doing Right now. He's hitting for 31 was an MVP caddy last year in the American League, wanted to be a Yankee came over was a kind of forgotten about steps into a roll. And was utterly brilliant last year, playing on a number of different positions for the Yankees across the infield, and he's just a hitting machine mean Maggie. We have the conversation when he was coming off Covert 19. He didn't start opening day. But since he's been put back into that lineup, it did not take a long time for D. J. May you two get his hitting shoes on, but he's only the man does his hit at 32 years old. I mean, all he does is hit. He doesn t course field doesn't a Yankee stay? I mean, he'd go go out there and hit. I mean that that is what will make you is And I think that and that's what he does is, I think maybe you they'll get a deal done with him. For Frasier. It's an interesting one. When you look at the future beings who the hell knows? I mean, you could look at Clint Frazier and I think he's an everyday major league outfielder. I think there are a lot of teams out there that would love. Clint Frazier being a part of their team. It really is the dynamic of this team where you look at Stan Judge and Hicks. You've gotta Mike talk meant as well. You know how much you know you've got Brett Gardner last year of his deal, But if you look at the future of this team, you know, could you look at it? Clint Frazier being a part of a trade package to bring it back and asset that this team desperately needs is that out of the line of out of the realm of possibility? I mean, it's not out of the realm of possibility. That that he would get traded because I think the value is starting to rise after a decreased to a level where a lot of people looked at Clint Frazier's maybe 1/4 outfielder. Now all the sudden, you know you're starting to see the 25 year old nun not not only mature But you're seeing that lightning quick bat speed, which made him You know what a top five pick when he was coming out of high school out of Georgia. So no Frazier's. I think a a special different talent. What I love about him as I mentioned before a lot. He's just different. You know what you had what he had to say before the game. I understand he can. You know it could turn some people off a little bit with his personality, But you know, he's a He's a little bit different, and I'm buying into the maturity aspect on by an intended he's grown up here a little bit. I'm buying into the idea that, you know, maybe at that quote unquote come to Jesus type of moment. And he's been kicking out the door and Arab, Boone said after the game. Listen, he basically echo the sentiments that Frasier said right, But he basically said after the game, this is the best that he simply listen. This is the best Clint Frazier that he has seen sought in spring training sought in summer camp, and now he's going to get an opportunity to get some reps here withstand being out for the next 3 to 4 weeks with that great one hamstring strain, so No. For Frasier. I felt good for him. I do know is that he's a guy I am room for. I'd make no bones about it. I was I was fired upto. Watch him last night, hit that home run and then finish the night, going three for four with a single and a double A cz? Well, he's a special offensive talent that's got to clean up some other things in his game, but offensively the man can hit Yeah. I mean, listen, the mentality at least what he's saying publicly is everything you'd want to hear from a guy who has gone through a lot. You know, he really has me. The up and down to Scranton. You know, back and forth over the last couple years, Remember, you know, he was option and he took like the full. What was it 72 hours to report to Scranton and you know it was It was just like like some passive aggressive kind of things, but it seems like his mentality is really changed. And it's Maur to the while. It's a cliche. It's one that you know you can only control you control. So you know, it seems like he's had a little bit of maybe turned a corner mentally, and he said it even last night after the game, he goes. Listen, I'm still trying to find what my role is, but I'm human, and I understand that Giancarlo Stanton is going to come back at some point. And then where does it leave me? I mean, the guy's going into this with completely open eyes and just asking for an opportunity. But we're talking about the future of Clint Frazier and the future of D. J. Lo make you You know, everything's connected Most obviously, so it's not just decisions about these two guys. You're also if you're the Yankees gonna have decisions to make on Masahiro Tanaka and also James Paxton. And you know this is a team. Well, I know that you know they print money and money is never an object to the Yankees. How Steinbrenner is on record, saying you shouldn't have to have a $200 million payroll to win a World Series. Remember at the time people like shocked it's like, Well, how could you put a price on a world Siri's? But and it's like, Oh, is this a new way that the Yankees are doing business? He thinks that you shouldn't have to have a $200 million payroll to win a world Siri's so you can't just ignore that right? And there's going to be a lot of decisions that have to be made. And so what do you prioritise? Because pitching has always got to be there, right. Pitching has always got to be there. So if you're gonna have Cole, you're expecting to have a healthy Severina back next year. But if Tanaka and Paxton Depending on how they feel about them, depending on what those players expectations are in terms of length of contract in numbers. Where does that potentially leave you? You know, Does that leave you now with Jordan Montgomery, And then maybe you're thinking a Clark Schmidt, a Debbie Garcia. Whatever. Are you gonna have young arms and feel okay about young arms behind a garret Cole and savory? No. Or do you choose one of those guys? And how does that work in terms of paying LeMay hue of paying these guys? You know, it's just all connected, and I'm curious for the Yankee fan out there if you had to make the decision today. Who do you prioritise Because they're both the same age. Who do you prioritise re signing the offseason? Is it d. J. Lo Mayhew? Or is it Masahiro Tanaka? And it's even crazy moves to actually put a position player and a pitcher like Tanaka even compare the two because I think you'd always say Tanaka Tanaka Tanaka. You always take the picture and that in that instance but think about how important D J. Lo Mayhew has been to this team. And this isn't lined up with a lot of power. Sure, but DJ Yella Mayhew, the situational hitting that he has shown the clutch hitting that he has shown his ability to play multiple positions. It's actually a question. We're normally you're picking the picture 10 times out of 10. Yeah. I mean, I think I think there's a possibility of some polls. I mean, honestly, especially will see exactly what Tanaka and how his season does finish out. I think they probably if they could only pick one or the other would probably sound LeMay you over Tanaka But tonight has shown himself to be a great big game pitcher has been wonderful here in New York, but, you know, I think for the Yankees here, I think there's a possibility that both guys get re signed in the off season. But I don't think they're gonna let depends on the player's expectations about does Tanaka want a four year deal? Does he want a three year with you going to do that? I don't know. I don't know. I mean, I really don't. I mean, I'd like to see the Yankees coming off a world Siri's have to make that decision and see exactly where they stand as an organization, But You know if you're asking me, D. J. Lo may use their question about him being a Yankee, and you know, for years to come now, even at 32 years old, I think deejay LeMay, who is going to be here? And for two Masahiro Tanaka. We know the inconsistencies in the regular season, both the one thing that Tanaka has shown here, you know, you like to be in the Yankee likes pension in New York, Andi showed himself to be a tremendous big game pitcher as well. Which is a quality in a characteristic that he cannot turn a blind eye to if you're an organization. I think Brian Cashman is very, very aware ofwhat Masahiro Tanaka has meant in October for this team, even though they have not won a world Siri's, But last night, I want to hear the call. Let me hear John Sterling's call of the Frasier home Run plates, C. Mac. Swung on and hit in the year to left center field since he already back looking up, that ball is.

New York Yankees' James Paxton Calls Out His Own White Privilege

"What I share something I thought that was pretty poignant that odd James Paxton had to say for the Yankees and he's also a part of the like player Executive Council that'll be Players Association that's been involved in a lot of these negotiations but here's where to say about the recent events he said my white privilege has allowed me to be oblivious to the true magnitude of oppression the black community faces by silence at this point is also a product of my white privilege and beginning to realize my privilege and ignorance time to listen learn and to take action at least that's just one example yeah we talked to Antrel Rolle talk to David Hackett and we're talking about how it's amazing to see athletes you know speaking out and sharing their their thoughts and of course I always think that's welcome but when you're seeing these kinds of like that to me seems like a very heartfelt message from James Paxton I mean that seems like someone who put a lot of thought into it of someone who is trying to listen and for him to put that out and and David Hackett said you know JJ watt and it's at the end for the white players like we saw this with Chris long and and some others who were very supportive of the players protesting what Colin Kaepernick was doing it and now even more so and that is been something that has really changed this for athletes you know where now you're seeing where it's not just the African American athletes who are the ones who will feel like they are in this and and trying to get the message across to get the point across about how wrong they felt for so long by law enforcement but also to have now the white athletes come along with it it is it that that is powerful we've been talking this morning a lot about statements and statements coming from teams and leagues and and how they land and and the impact that they have you know that from James Paxton to beat that that hits you know I think that you know the more that we see you athletes taking those kinds of positions but not for the sake of it you know not just to I feel like you get you know you put something out there okay I put something out there like really internalizing this it and feel like they want to make a meaningful change at apology inspects it for that

A look at all 16 possible World Series matchups

"Allow with us right now is is EMMA LB Major League baseball analyst insider extraordinaire the great one himself the one and only Kirk Chin who will be in attendance for tonight's Oakland a's Tampa Bay rays one game divisional playoff game. What's going on man? How are you how's everything I'm great Stephen? Even a I'm at a playoff game. It's a winner. Take all situation on October the second this is pretty good stuff. You really really liked this one game stuff don't you. You really liked him. Well what I think it does Stephen Obviously it brings a game seven half. Let's fear to the beginning of October that that game last night was a really good game but it was even better because the poor brewers had to go home after losing and granted. It's really unfair that one of these teams tonight both worked on ninety five or more games going to have to go home after one but it does bring increased integrity to the regular killer season. It makes those hundred sixty two games so important so you don't have to play in this game but the fact that the loser goes home home makes it. It has a level even high. I gotTA admit him. I'm very shocked by that position that you take because you are one of the most fair minded people I've ever known on and to go to a hundred and sixty two game season and it to come down told one game. It's it almost seems grew. It really does well. It is cruel stephen a but this is a cool sport and I was not in favor of this but here is the option if we were gonNA play a best best of three. Let's say and you are the New York Yankees. Let's say you want your division and you get to host the next round and we have ties leading into the wild card situation and then you play best of three it's possible the Yankees can win a hundred and ten game name say in a season and then take eight days off before they play a playoff game. That isn't fair you need to you need to really welcome the teams teams that won their division and put them in the best possible spot but if you make them wait a week before they get to play. I don't think that's fair. Wow Turkey right here with steven a radio. ESPN news fair enough. That game was something special last night at least the last couple of innings of soda to to to to Gino's keynote hit it to right field identify Grisham to commit that era. I gotTa tell you it was great to see how electric atmosphere was. How much did baseball Paul need particularly when we have just heard reports come down to how attendance drop but so like a six year low or something like that right well baseball can use all the health can get right now? It's still for me at least the greatest game and yet things are starting to slip a little bit and big game like that starting out like that in a city. That's like the biggest game the nationals of one well biggest game. A team in Washington is one baseball nineteen thirty three for goodness sake. That's what made it so good. That's why that celebration was so good and I'll crom tonight. Stephen Ain't no matter what happens this is gonna be a great night for baseball 'cause weighty. Did you see the Oakland Coliseum tonight with fifty thousand people in your they don't have the most fans in the world but the fans they have our rate and they are loud and it should be a tremendous atmosphere so this is a great jump start to the postseason in baseball last night in Washington and no matter what happens tonight tonight tonight in Oakland who you have when you look at tonight's game just evaluate this this match up to me between the as and Tampa Bay talk to me about you know who's looking good in mismatch in what well I like both teams. I'm GONNA pick I like it matters. I'M GONNA pick the as because they're at home. I'M GONNA pick the as Ashok MNAYA WHO's four no with a one twenty-one year as it's coming off the list has been great. Their bullpen is pretty darn good and they can just ask Mash Stephen a more than any team in the history of the Oakland A.'s in the franchise so they can really pounded but they're going up against Charlie Morton who was one of the best pitchers in the game this year. I saw his last start against your Yankees Steven A. and he he threw six scoreless. Let's see was completely dominant and if you throws like that he's GonNa win tonight. That's how good he was so this is a toss up game. I'll just take the as 'cause they gotta pick. Somebody and I'll take 'cause they're at home. You brought up my Yankee so let's get right to it because you know that's what I really really care about. Tim Kirk Okay. I'm very concerned earn. I am not concerned about the Minnesota twins even donate three hundred and seven home runs this year. I just think they're allergic to prosperity whenever their face against the New York Yankees the Houston Houston Astros are an entirely different matter with Verlaine with Cole Whitt Cranky. I don't see anybody beating. These guys. Talk to me about my yankees prospects. The this postseason Tim Kirk well first off. Do not look pass the twins. Even though I'm with you I believe will win. This series do not look past the team that can swing it like that. Team can second I think the Astros are the best team not just in the American league but in both leagues and I'm not sure how any team to navigate through those friends for you guys in the rotation especially coal and Burland at the top and I'm also going to tell you it's even a there or is hope that the Yankees can win the world series that make you really happy a bunch of things have to happen of course after mash like they always do the bullpen has to be great great like it always has been but Luis Severino comes back and give them five dominant innings. Can we've seen him do and if James Paxton this good he's one ten starts in a row. If Tanaka can give them one really good start or a few really good starts I think they are good enough to win the world series with the team that they have now but I still have them as the third best team in baseball go in behind the Astros and the dodge transitioned to the Los Los Angeles dodgers. They've got to face these Washington nationals in the LDS. How do you see that matchup handicap that for me well? I liked the dodgers in that matchup with the understanding understanding that if Max Scherzer can return to being the great Max Scherzer which he has not been since he came off the injured list is not he wasn't that guy last night. He wasn't that Guy September. If he returns to the best he's ever been with him. In Strasbourg Patrick Corbin they can give the dodgers a really really hard time with with that starting rotation and that lineup is very potent these days. I just think the dodgers are more complete team. They hit the ball out of the Ballpark ballpark with anybody. Three stars in the rotation are really good. My key question with 'em is is their back end to the bullpen as good as it needs to be Kenley Kenley Jansen get the people out. He needs to get out if he can't. They're not going to win the world series. How wants faiths the dodgers fans having jetson? I know I don't have much. I like the guy personally early but I I I don't. I don't trust him. I don't trust them a big spots. I think he can be hit. Talk to me about him. For a second yeah his is down his cuddled. It doesn't have the same movement to better tad in the past and that gives fans of pause. They do have some other health back there there but I really thought they'd go get more help at the trade deadline and they didn't so they're gonNA hope starting pitching and power is going to carry them and they're hoping pinged Kenley Jansen his best but I seen him much much better than he's been this year. What should we make about the fact that you've got high payrolls dodgers Yankees you know old? I don't know the order in which is the highest payroll. You would know that at this particular juncture but I must ask you Tampa Bay is in the postseason obviously lowest payroll in major league baseball well. I do believe I know that I mean how do you explain the fact that teams like the as in the Tampa Bay rays notoriously alot payrolls manage to get this fall and sometimes further dentist with the highest payrolls talked about that for a quick second as a protest. Why baseball is so great even a is that Lebron doesn't touch it on every possession? Kevin Durant doesn't touch it on every possession it is so much more of a eighteen game in its own way because you could lose a superstar and still be really good you have to draft and develop properly like the as and the rays done you have to play the game in a better manner because you can't afford to make a mistake because you know either in free agency or trade because it could set that you back with a raise did they. They got Austin Meadows and tyler glass now in a deal for Chris Archer Saint the whole team now they've ninety games two years in a row they they are really good but they're really 'cause they play the game even a defense base running better than most teams do instead of just sitting back saying well. We're GONNA hit a three run at home this morning so we don't have to do all the other things so. Let's get all of this out of the way right. Now Tim Cook while you're here with me. Yankees twins you. Have you have one in that series. I've got the Yankees over the twin yes with the warning. I say it again. Don't underestimate a team that hit over three hundred homers with the as as you picked as over the race tonight which means there as will go up against Houston obviously you pick in Houston to win that series assuming it comes down to that and the LDS correct yeah yeah but no cakewalk they're not against the as but I have the astros advancing against the how formidable on the Atlanta braves not mean I mean I mean at least in these parts. We talked enough about them. How good is this Atlanta braves team well? If Ronald Kunia junior and Freddy Freeman are completely healthy and they they want to finish the season they are the biggest threat to the dodgers in the National League for me. They're lying is absolutely relentless and with some of the pitching moves they made young and Old Dallas Cycle and the upgrades in their bullpen. I like that team. I don't like it as much as I like the dodgers but they can beat the dodgers with the team. They have right now so the nationals brightest moment was last night because you don't see them beating the dodgers correct I don't because they're going to start on the road. They've already use sure they're they've already Strasbourg people. They can get them back in time. I just don't think they held it too. I was worried shows a look tied at the floor four. Oh five in his last night I mean fifteen and won his last pitch and fit then it was I think it was at seventy seven pitches and he looked absolutely gassed. What does that about yeah? He's he's he's been hurt for portions of the year and he's had a little trouble getting that rhythm back in September and now in October and he is so max effort for on every single pitch when everything isn't working properly even he can get in trouble because almost nobody's better than him.

"I mean, it just feels like what are some of the like, you know, the difference between these and the brewers uniforms and everybody hates with the gold. Trim is like it's the difference between Wisconsin in south Florida. Like, this is this is south Florida. A brewers 'em with the the wheat logo uniforms. Cure relations, Derek jeeter. You may Florida boring. So that that brings us to the last big uniform change, the Cleveland Indians has unveiled new uniforms. They've got a new red alternate top. We'll see how that goes. You know? I don't like the Red Sox red alternate top. I don't like the the one that Braves had a while back. But it I think it looks good on the angels. I think it looks good on the Phillies. So we'll see how this ends up looking. But the most the biggest change is no more chief Wahoo. And I think we can all agree that boring. Comprehensively boring is better than boring, and I think we're about a decade past the point where we could say good job Cleveland Indians for getting rid of chief Wahoo because his way overdue, but at least they have finally done that. And I don't really like the the red tops either. I don't think sometimes you have to see it on a human. I got to see it on the fields. Yeah. Yeah. Right. It's it's hard just with these. "Durability is a gigantic issue. I mean, if you wanna talk about when he's on on his day, you know, he's among the best pitchers in baseball. Certainly there is that stretch and early may where he had the sixteen strikeout game and the no hitter in back to back starts. That's incredible there. I there might not be ten pitchers in baseball who can who represent the peak that that Paxton has right? So and this isn't about to a certain extent this isn't about durability because the Yankees don't need him to throw two hundred innings. They need him to throw game for the LDS against Boston or Houston. And if he's healthy there it we've seen the the Red Sox. You don't need a, you know, just invert Lander to pitchy entire season. If you can get that guy for that. Game. So you know, we've seen that with Boston with Nathan all seen it with Houston with Lance mccullers Charlie Morton, but that's the kind of pitcher that Paxton is to me a guy with incredible peak, but no record of longevity. And the reason you can tell these not a top ten pitcher in baseball is this is not a top ten pitcher in baseball trade return. I think Justice Sheffield's a great prospect. I think he's a good gap for Seattle based on on the potential that he represents how close he is to major league ready. He is essentially major league ready. He's going to be the best. He's going to be the best prospect in the in the mariner system from the Mony puts on a marriage Mariners uniform he's gonna he there's an outside chance. He could be the best pitcher on the Mariners this year. I just don't get giving up all of this like top ten pitcher in baseball means that you're comparing him to guys like degrom and Scher and Kershaw and Chris sale and in order to be that you need to be two hundred innings guy. And if you're a guy who has when everything's right and everything and. Would everything's right. And you've got your stuff and your healthy. And you've got your good command. You can hang with those guys you could buy Charlie Morton off the of the free agent rack for maybe ten million dollars more over the next two years in Paxton has he's not a young pitcher. There's not a whole lot of team control left. He's not that big and upgrade it's not say, it's not a good pitcher. I think he's a good pitcher. But you can he's not so irreplaceable that you need to go out and trade adjusted Sheffield firm, and there's this is not to downplay the risk of a short power pitcher with spotty command. Like, there's a chance at Justice Sheffield turns out to be a middle reliever. And just ends up being tremendously frustrating. But there's also a chance of Justice Sheffield throws more and better innings in the major leagues over the next two years. And James Paxton, so I can see I absolutely understand. Why the made this trade, it's not a bad trade? I think it's a fair price for a pitcher who has a lot of risk built in more risk than his reputation. Or more risk than than you'll be led to believe, by the way that people talk about them. Well, if I can jump in between you fighting people and Zach you can have your rebuttal in a second. But I think I mean for one thing the keys might still sign Charlie Morton or someone I make sure that they're not done, and that this is their trade acquisition that they will have a free agent acquisition as well to rent out this rotation. But I think obviously if you've gotten to your thirtieth birthday as James Paxson just has happy birthday gyms Becton without ever pitching more than one hundred sixty one third innings in a single season. Obviously a lot of things have gone wrong. And that is clearly the case for James Paxton. But I'm sure jet Zach could tell you that he has his whole injury history..

"Yes. They finally gave him a podcast. It's called Milnes retorts about one movie villain each week. The first two that he chose to to talk about we're Hannibal Lecter and Regina George said, this podcast is definitely right up. My alley. I hope it's right up yours, but you're alive. If you're listening to this show is baseball. And that's what we're going to talk about was that cram in Ben lemberg right on the side of this. So I've joined as always by Ben Limburg, then ADA Hello. I'm doing well. And we're gonna talk about some transactions some player move been on the show today. But we have some player movement of our own sat. Cram has moved to Illinois and his microphone is not there yet. So he's joining us via telephone. Hello. So the reason Zach is joining us on telephone is there's finished trade, and he's afraid of my takes. So I'm going to introduce the trade ad Ned. I'll let Zach wind up and eventually Ben's gonna talk at some point on the show. But I don't know. I don't think he's a frayed of your takes. He wants to be here to to combat James Paxton slander, enter the world unopposed. Yeah. I can just play the neutral moderator here on ingredients already. All right. So the tree is James tax, our guest former Seattle Mariners left-hander to the New York Yankees for left handed pitching prospect Justice Sheffield outfield, prospect, Dom, Tom Williams, a former South Carolina Gamecocks and right handed pitcher, Eric Swanson, I guess Jack just take it away. I'll let you go first 'cause we have differing opinions on trade. Well, by the time people are listening to this episode. There will be a piece up on the ringer dot com. Which I call James Paxton, adopt ten pitcher in baseball. So I think the he's added a top ten pitcher, and you don't really need to go beyond that Paxton. Yes, there are some hostile demerits. He's older. He has an injury history. He's never won an award or made an all star team. But if you look at basically every underlying metric, ditch performance, either top ten pitcher and. Danke is needed one of those to compete with Boston Cleveland at Houston, and they got him. There's not much more you need to analyze beyond that, I think if we're going to say this is good trade for the. Or is there? So here's the thing. If you're operating from the premise that James Paxton is a top ten pitcher in baseball than obviously this is a steel for the Enke's, but nothing about he's never qualified for the title in six major league seasons..

"All right. So you wanna anything else out about that story? Or can I jump into this baseball trade? Sure Sure, you you can can. Germany-based thought it was a little humor, really good. You're so drunk. You're kicked out of curling tournament. I love that. I just thought it was mandatory for you to drink to curl. I just thought like okay before this tournament. Everybody must drink. Anyways. The Yankees had a blockbuster trade yesterday they land James Paxton all star pitcher from the Seattle Mariners in return, they send their top left handed pitcher Justice Sheffield in two others, two other minor league prospects in return, some people think that Justice Sheffield is going to be a stud like Clayton Kershaw type stud, but some people are kind of split on him to where they think he's not accurate enough. He doesn't throw enough strikes. He's too wild. He's still very young player. But he was for sure the prize possession and the Yankees in the Yankees, minor league farm system, the thirty year old James Paxton, I just mentioned all star pitcher, what do you think about? This trade. I never liked the fact that people risk their top prospects for play right now because you're kinda risking your future. But you know, we'll see how this goes as the next season happens, and we'll just go from there. I just I just think I wouldn't so many prospects is what I'm saying. Well, the Yankees kind of a win. Now roster would you agree with that they just made the planet? Absolutely. But I just don't I just it's always a risk factor. When you. Take away your top prospect was it you said their top prospect. Yeah, I mean, you know, how it is like different people rate these players differently. Maybe different organizations slash websites. We'll have their own rankings on them. But just the Sheffield has been a name. He's been name that that teams have looked to acquire from the Yankees when talking about giving away one of their best players. So for the Mariners. They do get young pitcher if they can mold him, and he can reach his potential. I mean, it's a steal. But if he becomes a number two or number three type starter, maybe it doesn't work out for them. But hey Paxton is only four million this season. He has a pretty good pretty nice contract in terms of flexibility for the Yankees. So the Yankees could still go out and acquire more pitching. It didn't really cost them a lot of dollars at least this year because I guess at four million dollars. You're getting an all star pitcher a pretty good deal. Yeah. True. I just I'm still skeptical. We'll see how the season goes on. But you never know this prospect, I gave up my the greatest player ever ever lived. You. Never know. I mean. Yeah. I know that I know that so. Over the top. But you get what I'm eating the other options, though, are for the because we can agree. The Yankees starting pitching right now. Right. Yeah. That was their big weakness here starting pitching. Yeah. Okay. So I agree with you like, I hate giving away top prospects. But the Yankees they still need another pitcher at least one more because they have Severino Tanaka Sobat the coming back oddly enough. And now they add Paxton they still need a frontline starter, probably a one or two in my opinion. But when you go to free agency, then gets really expensive. So anyways Adrian belt trae retired. You were talking about that. Yeah. It's really sad for the world of baseball guys played one hundred seventy four years of baseball. He's one of the funniest guys on the field as well. And he was just you just a nice guy overall just a guy you would hang out with and just seem any. He was part of three thousand hit club wasn't was. Never won a World Series. Unfortunately for him. But I still think all Famer. Twelve toes. Seven with the Rangers. Yeah. That was close as he got. Well, when did they was the giants that was twenty ten twenty seven was against the cardinals had literally one strike wait yet to win. They were in game six, but I don't wanna bring that up to Texas Rangers fans, probably the most heartbreaking history. Yeah. It was bad. What a career that twenty one years. Almost as old Siam..

"We've got a couple of great packages that we are auctioning off, including a chance come in watch the show here hang out with us and also some field passes and tickets for the giants and Cowboys and a great red bull's package as well. We've got all of that coming, and we're going to tell you more about that throughout the course of the afternoon, but we are going to start today's show a little orthodox because the newest Yankee. James Paxton joins us right now. James, welcome to New York. It's Chris Maggie and Bart here on WFAN in New York City. What was your reaction when you first heard the news that you were headed to the Yankees? Little surprised, you know, but super excited, I'm I'm honored to be app. Pinstripes and help the Yankees go for number twenty eight. It's funny Jamesy. You're going to be joining a team and a franchise where I'm going to be honest. A lot of fans last year thought the team underachieved when they won a hundred games have you to feel first of all what do you think about that a fan base or team that says they underachieve yet they want one hundred games? Well, you know, New York expects to win. And if you're not number one, you know, you're not I fear the worst. So you know, I think it's all about winning championships. And that's what they expect. And that's what we're trying to build in New York. Have you ever felt that sort of pressure on a nightly basis? No. It'll be a new experience for me to see I think that much pressure. But I feel like I I'm ready for it. You know, I kinda built up here. The last few years can't gaining experience implying some bigger games here. And there and I feel like I'm ready to go. Now, we've all acts when we're the Yankees going go Yankee. So how does it feel to notice you're part of that process of the Yankee sanded, we're all landed? We're going for right now. How did they make you feel that you the first piece to the puzzle? I'm honored to be called upon by the Yankees. You know, they have that confidence. In me. They they think that I'm the guy that can help close that gap between Boston and put in position to to win a championship is is he shows a lot of confidence in me. And I'm just really excited to to be part of it. All James have got a chance to hear some of your comments from last night with the beat writers and one of them I found particularly fascinating from when you went down in two thousand sixteen and really since you've been so much better of a pitcher and the idea of reading hitters swings. And how important that has become for you just describe what the transformation was like. And was it just as simple as kind of like getting switched on for you. Well, I think the two different things. Well, the arm mangled change allowed me to throw more strikes and also kept my head more still in my mom, mechanics, and my delivery. So it's easier to see what was happening through the ball. And the readings twins takes time and experience, you know, I've been in the league now for five years, and I had an experience they don't have quite as many innings as most guys with five years because my injuries, but I'm kind of getting to a point where I have the ability to throw my pitch. And then see what the swing looks like the body language as a hitter. And then be able to choose you know, what I need to do next. You mentioned the injuries. And it's a Yankee fans have been bringing up here over the last eighteen hours since they heard about the trade. So what would you tell the Yankee fan about your injury history of their concerned by it? Well, nothing big, you know, I haven't had one knock on wood. I haven't had any elbow injuries shoulder injuries. They've all been. You know? Smaller injuries kind of soft tissue stuff. And none of the injuries that I've had have returned. I figured out ways to make sure they don't happen again troop rehab prefab exercises. Whatever it may be. And I continue to learn about my body, and I work really hard. I put everything I've got into this thing. And I think I'm hopefully running out of things to to have to remedy. Things have been going in the right direction. You know, each year the last few years there have been throwing more and more innings. So keep that trend going and get closer to that two hundred inning Mark next year. I'm gonna make the obvious joke care since you're not joining the Mets. I'm sure everything's going to go smoothly. In terms of. That's just a local thing. You'll have to get used to that. Which of your injuries, though, what has been the most difficult to come back from. I know you said they were small they were minor. But which was the toughest to either a pitch through or to come back from. Well, the most frustrating for sure was my finger injury because everything else dog crate, and the only thing that was bothering me was my was my finger. I just had partially torn a. It was called a four poli in my middle middle finger, and I just I couldn't throw a baseball. But everything else felt great. And it took a long time because the blood flow to your fingers isn't very good. So it takes a long time for them to heal. And that was that was really hard just to kind of sit there. And you know, you think about how do you do anger exercises? You know, it's just it was basically just time it needed to heal. And 'cause I'm someone who wants to. I wanna do everything I can to, you know, get back as soon as possible. And there is really nothing that I can do gotta get you gotta get that little bucket a rice to go, Bruce Lee style. But. As an athlete. We're always tweaking our training methods are nutrition when has been the secret sauce for you to try and make sure that you enter the season as healthy and able to go as long as you can. Well each year, it's kind of been adding on you know, I've learned more each each off season. Training wise, I've been working with some people here in Seattle that do muscle activation technique. It's just a technique that make sure that all of your muscles are firing properly and working together. So that's something isn't overcompensating 'cause their their philosophy is that if all of your muscles are firing properly nothing should tear because the muscles are extremely strong. And you know, if if something is is hurt because something else is shut down. And then I'm also working with a my first year working with the nutritionist on my own entrance and different things. And I feel great, you know, I've lost about ten pounds and my body fats down and my body feels feels fantastic. So I take I'm in come into next season. Being the best shape of my career newest Yankee James Paxton joining. Right here on the fan to numbers jumped out to me for you about the last two years number one the strikeouts. Going way way up especially this past season two hundred eight and one hundred sixty innings is pretty darn impressive. What do you attribute that to? Learning how to pitch you know, like like I said before reading swings. And utilizing my stuff a little bit better learning how to strike is out. You know, I think it's all a process of learning. How to use my stuff, and I've used a high fastball a little bit more coupled with my curveball and my cutter slider. Whatever you guys want to call it. You'll see it when I throw it. It's some people call it a cutter some people call this slider. And just coupling that learning how to use that stuff to strike guys out his sons been big part of it for me, the second one was that this past year that the home run numbers went up allowed from. I think it was from nine to like twenty three was just more pitches up in his own Nick end up getting hit out. What was it? Yeah. Made a few mistakes this year as far as the home runs. Go just a few mental mistakes as much as physical mistakes things that I'm working to remedy, you know, in the past I've been pretty good at being at keeping the ball. I keeping the ball in the ballpark and something that I want to get back to of course, you know. But I think that like you said it's just a couple of mistakes up his own losing focus, maybe a couple of times here, and they're trying to do something when I should have just been focusing on making my bitch. So definitely things at all. You know, work on and try to get rid of for next year. And we're talking about James Paxton and at the risk of this interview going totally off the rails. This is not why bringing this up at all. But would you pitch your Yankee Stadium? We saw that first inning and couple bombs leaving the field. Aaron judge do harm. Both got to you in that first inning. A little bit of nerves or just as you were saying before just kind of loss of focus or something like that. Yeah. You know that was kind of came in that game. And I, you know, I don't know. I just wasn't really honored I guess right away. And just wasn't on my game. And of course, timing Yankee Stadium. I don't know. Maybe it was a little bit of nerves. Would it seems like I you know, after that anything I I kinda calmed down and got back to business. And I think I did pretty well after that. Okay. So this is an impossible question to answer. But I'm gonna ask you anyway. Tougher to face or more intimidating to face judger Stanton. Oh, man. They're both extremely good players. You know, tons of power. They both are extremely talented. I am very happy. Gonna be on my team. Now, I don't have to face those guys. 'cause there a couple of monsters all that lineup. It's honestly hard to choose which one is more intimidating. They're both. They're both very good players that being said, I don't feel like I get intimidated on the mound. I feel like I try to be the aggressor and. I'm willing to face anybody. And I put my stuff up against anybody. Now. Now, the Yankee Stadium is going to be home. What if any did you learn from that experience from rough game? I just learned that at the same game. No matter where you go. You know, it doesn't matter how big the stage or who you're playing. It's the baseball game doesn't change and needed to be reminded of that. But I don't need to change who I am. Or what I do just because I've got a different stadium in a new place or even got a New Jersey on my back. You know, I'm gonna go out there and do what I do. And that time to get my most consistent results, and you can pass that along to Sonny gray. Shovel trouble adjusting James Paxton with us. Have you heard last night from Aaron Boone have you heard from any of your teammates as yet? See see us about the texted me yesterday, welcoming me to the Yankees and just letting me know to reach out of I have any need any help with the move was really nice of them to reach out to me. I really appreciated that haven't heard from any other guys yet. But I'm sure I'll get a few texts here in there over the holidays and stuff. I'm sure guys are busy with family and everything, but I'm really looking forward to to meeting my new teammates. And you know, the guys I'm gonna go to battle with. Reputation around the game. I would imagine that had the mean a lot and knowing that you're gonna have an opportunity to play next to that guy. This year. Yeah. I'm extremely excited to play the CC. You know, he's a great player. He's a great career. And I'm really looking forward to learning from him. It's gonna be a great opportunity for me. We're talking with James Bax. And James I noticed something with two years ago you had kind of a lot of wild pitches. It seemed like you really clean that up this year. And maybe what you were talking about earlier about being able to see the ball where it's going and changing those kinds of things about your delivery may have helped that I'm just curious looks type relationship. Do you like to have with a catcher, you know? Obviously Gary Sanchez has struggled here defensively especially the season. How do you like that relationship to go? Yeah. I think needs to be a very like open relationship. I think the more we get to know each other. You know, I'm sure he's gonna catch me along spring training. We'll have a lot of conversations about what I like to do..
