New White House offer adds $600 checks to COVID-19 relief

"It here New White House covert relief proposal is in the works. This includes $600 stimulus checks, but no more unemployment boosts. That's the latest thing being rolled out by the Treasury secretary, Steven Manoogian. This is something that Mitch McConnell cocaine, Mitch has given his blessings on the Republican leadership. They've given this to house Speaker Pelosi. We are waiting to see how they feel about this. But basically each adults would receive a stimulus. Check a $600 check. And what's it going to do for a business owner? That's been shut down hammer. That's why that man coming with me read Walden. We're not done yet here. Other proposal does include some money for a local businesses. Not a lot, but they're trying to get something passed. Now keep in mind. This is less than what was rolled out to the Democratic leadership in the House multiple times. There was a bill before the election. That was substantially more than this that Pelosi and Schumer and all the high ranking Democrats got together and said, No, this isn't good enough. You want to know the reason why Dick Durbin, the representative from Ohio Democrat senator from Ohio, spilled the beans with Jake Tapper. Yesterday, House Democrats turned down that much larger coronavirus relief bill. Because the election was coming. Senator Bernie Sanders, the

Among first acts, Biden to call for 100 days of mask-wearing

"Joe biden said thursday that he will ask americans to commit to one hundred days of wearing masks says one of his first acts. As president stopping just short of the nationwide mandate he's pushed before to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The move marks a notable shift from president. Donald trump who's own skepticism mask wearing has contributed to a politicization of the issue. That's made many people reticent to embrace a practice that public health experts say is one of the easiest ways to manage the pandemic which has killed more than two hundred seventy five thousand americans. The president-elect has frequently emphasized mask wearing as a quote patriotic duty and during the campaign floated the idea of instituting a nationwide mask mandate which he later acknowledged would be beyond the ability of the president to enforce speaking with. Cnn's jake tapper biden. Said he would make the request of americans on inauguration day january twentieth on the first day i'm inaugurated. I'm going to ask the public for one hundred days to mask. "About this whole election. Is that the exit polls at CNN? Not anybody else CNN was reporting yesterday. The exit polling that they were reporting was that the number one issue for voters was the economy. Who does that benefit President Trump Number two, they said Jake Tapper was stunned by the exit polling. Debate commission promises changes after chaotic first face-off

"Debates is promising some changes to ensure that the process is more constructive. The move comes after President Trump ran roughshod over Democratic rival Joe Biden and moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News during Tuesday's debate in Cleveland. NPR's David Folkenflik has more Trump attacked Biden, his family and Wallace himself. Issues were often left on the sidelines. ABC is George Stephanopoulos called it the worst debate he's seen in his decades long life in politics and journalism. CNN's Jake Tapper called it a hot mess inside a Dumpster fire. CNN's Dana bash. Well, I probably can't repeat what she said live on the air unless I want NPR stations to incur huge fines. The commission says the debate quote made clear that additional structure should be added to the format to ensure a more orderly discussion of the issues, and it promised more tools from moderators to quote. Maintain order. Presumably, both candidates would have to agree, and Trump's campaign says that would move the goal posts and change the rules. Mid match. David

Trump Again Scorns Science on Masks and Vaccines

"President Trump continues to dispute what scientists are saying about the race for a vaccine yesterday claiming the CDC Director was confused when Dr Redfield said, there would not be enough vaccines for the general public until late two, thousand and twenty one as C. N. N.'s Ryan Nobles now reports Dr Robert. Redfield today talked about his future on the job. Thank you. President trump on the road to the battleground of Wisconsin with plans for another packed rally with very few precautions in place to prevent the spread of Corona virus. The rallies which are picking up frequency symbolized the president's approach to the virus contradicting the specific guidance set out by his administration's Centers for disease, control like wearing masks, masks of problems too, and I talked about the masks have to be handled very gently very carefully. The president continues to doubt the benefit of masks despite CD director Robert Redfield telling a congressional panel in explicit terms just how valuable can be to stopping the spread I might even go so far as to say that this face mask is more guaranteed to protect me against. Cova Than when I take a covert vaccine, the disconnect on masks emblematic of the ongoing clash between the president and those tasked with containing covert. Especially when it comes to win a vaccine could be ready redfield born in Congress a reliable vaccine will take time I. Think we're probably looking at third. Late second quarter. Third. Twenty twenty one but trump claiming the doctor. Had IT wrong? I think he made a mistake when he said that it's just incorrect information. Even though trump's handpicked member of the Task Force Dr Scott Atlas agreed a widely distributed safe vaccine won't be ready by Election Day. And then the. There will be seven, hundred, million doses by end of coupon. Redfield did not back down making it clear in a statement that he meant when he said about the vaccine timeline and promising that he has no plans to step down at the same time president trump blamed blue states or states with democratic governors for the high death toll the standoff prompting swift criticism from Democrats. If you close your eyes and pretend that half the country doesn't exist, maybe some might think you didn't do such a spectacularly awful

"The chorus of voices criticizing president trump for his inadequate handling of the coronavirus pandemic just grew one voice louder a stunning new rebuke of president trump from a former official in his own White House breaking right here on the lead she accused president trump a failing to protect the American people Olivia Troy was the top Homeland Security Adviser Vice President Mike Pence who heads the coronavirus task force she was on the Task Force from day one she says but now troy left the White House in late. July. And she is leveling some tough charges against president trump in a new video. Towards the Middle February, we knew it wasn't a matter of if Cova would become a big pandemic here in the United States. One. But the president didn't want to hear that because his biggest concern was that we were in an election year and how is this going to affect what he considered to be his record of success? The truth is he doesn't actually care about anyone else but himself. Troy. Goes on to say that president trump made a statement that she will never forget because in her view it defines who president trump is. When we were in a task force meeting presidents said, maybe this Kobe thing is a good thing I don't like shaking hands with people I don't have to shake hands with these disgusting people does discussing people are the same people that he claims to care about. Trump to Visit California After Criticism Over Silence on Wildfires

"Going to begin right now going straight to California, which is facing, of course, record breaking wildfires more than three million acres burned joining me live. Los, Angeles mayor said he Mayor Garcetti, he thanks for joining us. We're seeing these horrific scenes out of the west coast the Bobcat fire burning fewer than twenty five miles outside of Los Angeles as of yesterday that fire destroyed almost thirty thousand acres. It's only six percent contained right now president trump is going to travel to your state tomorrow to meet local officials. He approved disaster relief for your stay three weeks ago. Are You satisfied with the trump administration's response? Well we always have great cooperation with our federal agencies and I want to thank them for that because they do step up whether it's corona virus or whether it's fires but I think leadership at the very top needs to be earlier stronger and from the President I wish that we would get as much attention not based on an electoral map but just. Purely on being Americans and the need for leadership to be from the white. House for all of America You know whether it's twin hurricanes on the Gulf coast or fires here on the West Coast we're one nation and sometimes looking at the leadership that comes out. It's easy to forget that it's taken three weeks I'm glad he's coming but. We need much more help when we have firefighters dying on the line and Washington refuses to help states and refuses to help local governments that are the first responders to emergencies like this. It's unconscionable. So instead of hitting the golf course going on vacation the president, the Congress respectively should sit down this week and finally make sure that there is assistance for. These brave men and women who are protecting our lives and protecting our property well to be clear. What exactly are you saying? President trump in your view would have done differently of California were say a republican state like Louisiana A or other states in the Gulf, Texas what what what would have done differently because he did sure Clare Disaster three weeks ago. Absolutely and I always say that that's very important that those agencies respond. We get good coordination but there's a refusal to blaming of blue states over red states in his mind I remind people there's a million Republicans that live here in the city of Los Angeles even if you're a partisan, you should be stepping up with empathy you should be stepping up with helping with a new cares act when people are slashing local government and state government laying people off this is bad for our economy. This is bad for our emergency response. It's terrible for our corona virus response, and so we need leadership that is equal across this country instead of being partisan and divisive, and it's very clear. This president seems to divide more. He's going to come out here and probably tell us I gonNA send you rakes instead of more help we need actual help material help not based on our party affiliation or how we voted leadership isn't about grudges. It's about governing for all. Well, let's talk about that because. Of Atta Rally last night president trump repeatedly told his supporters that containing the wildfires is all about forest management in. As you note, he's frequently criticised California for failing to rake the forest floors to prevent wildfires What's your response? What are the facts behind this? Well I listen to fire professionals not the president of the United States are politician when it comes to actually what causes these fires It's been very clear that years of drought seeing whether it's too much water and too much rain in parts of our country right now or too little. This is climate change and this is an administration that's put its head in the sand while we have democratic and Republican mayors across the. Country stepping up to do their part this is a administration president who wants to withdraw from the Paris climate. Accord's a later this year the only country in the world to do so Talk to a firefighter. If you think the climate change is real and it seems like this administration last vestiges of the flat earth. Society of this generation, we need real action we need to actually reduce the carbon emissions that we have and we. Need to make sure we can manage that water and this is not about just forced management or raking anybody who lives here in California insulted by that quite frankly and keeps perpetrating this live.

Happened in Portland, we saw someone get killed overnight amid clashes there, and the president has been tweeting and re tweeting before dawn this morning he called for the Mayor of Portland to resign and be arrested. He painted protesters as thugs and cities. In chaos. You are the chairman as I mentioned of the Senate Homeland. So we need to get control the situation we need to encourage calm an here's something else we need to do. We need to figure out what we do all agree on and we share the same goal. I finally had a chance to sit down and look at the photograph in detail. It is definitely not me. I can tell by looking at it. That was a total contradiction of what north I'm headed midday just hours before when he said he was quote deeply sorry for the decision. I made to appear as I did in this photo unquote, north did reveal yesterday, his vivid memory of wearing black face on a different occasion that year at a dance contest where he dressed as Michael Jackson and colored his face with shoe polish marking the first time in American political history that a politician attempted to explain his innocence regarding one racist black face incidents by pointing to another one that he recalled participating in north is now asking for the opportunity to earn Virginians forgiveness. "jake tapper" Discussed on State of the Union with Jake Tapper

"Hello. I'm Jake tapper in Washington where the state of our union is open at least for now. The US government is back up and running after five weeks that left hundreds of thousands of Americans without pay and agencies starved for resources on Friday. President Trump gave in housing he would sign a temporary spending Bill to reopen the federal government without any funding for the border wall. The move was a win for house speaker Nancy Pelosi who maintained she would not even discuss border security until the government reopen the president defended himself against critics from the right tweeting. The move was quote, not a concession, but on its face, the president retreated from his demand and the deal was essentially the same as what the Senate unanimously passed in December before the president forced the shutdown lawmakers now face a ticking clock, of course, they have three weeks to make a deal before the government runs out of funding. Again, President Trump has already said he will shut down the government or declare national emergency. If he does not get funding for his wall. Joining me now is Republican Senator Marco Rubio, Florida. He's also a member of the Senate intelligence committee. Senator I want to start with the shutdown. The president did not get any wall funding in this short term deal. SNP says the economy over the last thirty five days lost billions of dollars because of the shutdown. Was this whole strategy strategy by President Trump with Republicans in the house and Senate going along with was it a huge mistake. I don't think shutdowns are good leverage. It's a lesson. I've certainly learned in my time here there's been two shutdowns since the time I've been there and the aggressor and neither one was the winner. I think it's important to separate the tactics from the goal and the policy, and what the president wants is not unreasonable. It's a fraction of what Democrats voted for in the past. And more importantly, I think and these for me is achieving border security is the key that unlocks the door to doing other things on immigration that he's expressed a willingness to do the extension of TPS dealing with a DACA population. I believe he's willing to go even further. And do something reasonable with people who have been here a long time unlawfully, but are not criminals, but all of that is being held up by the inability to get agreement on border security, which the president campaigned on. So I hope people will separate the tactics from the policy because the policy is reasonable and solid. But as you know, the Democrats voting for more money in border security in the past especially in two thousand thirteen the immigration reform Bill that you helped push that was in exchange for a lot of other things having to do with undocumented immigrants having to do with a path to legal status. It wasn't just given out willy nilly. You see there's an opportunity here over the next three weeks to get something done. Where does that optimism come from? Well, first of all we shouldn't be trading border security for anything because it's something we're all for if you're for something. And I'm for something..

"Hello. I'm Jake tapper in Washington, where the state of our union is chaotic with fears that it's all about to get much worse. If President Trump was looking for a dramatic season. Finale. He's got it government shutdown. Top officials quitting in protest. Plummeting stock market and they're still a week of two thousand eighteen to go Saturday. President Trump announced that he and Milania will celebrate Christmas in Washington this year instead of it mar-a-lago, they will not be able to gaze upon the normally spectacularly adorned national Christmas tree. However, the government shutdown means it's lights out for the large evergreen near the White House as the government seems almost sure to remain partially closed through the holiday congress will not resume business until Thursday with no deal in sight, leaving federal workers facing uncertainty over the holidays, some three hundred eighty thousand employees, we'll stay home until the government reopens while about four hundred twenty thousand employees deemed essential will be forced to work without hey, a reminder, most federal employees do not live. Live in the Washington DC area. They live throughout the country Saturday lawmakers and members of the president's team appeared to remain at an impasse with no signs of a path Ford. Republican Senator leader Mitch McConnell announcing nothing will happen until the president and Democrats agree. President Trump is demanding five billion dollars for his border wall. And Senate Democrats say they will not give him the votes for it. This is the president seems to be even less restrained than normal after the sudden resignations of his Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Brett mcgurk atop diplomatic official in the fight against ISIS. Moves that have even some of the most loyal Republicans expressing misgivings and concern, I want to go straight to the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations committee Senator Bob corker, Republican of Tennessee Senator thanks so much for joining us. We appreciate it. Jay good to be with you during these festive times. That's right. Merry christmas. You were heavily involved in the negotiations. You help secure a deal requiring all the parties involved. Pelosi Ryan Schumer McConnell and President Trump to publicly agree before a vote to end the shutdown. I have to say I found it striking the part of this deal was that President Trump needs to publicly endorse it before there's any vote. Why? Well, look, Jake. This is a a purposely contrived fight over at the end of the day. Even no matter who wins our borders are still going to be insecure. I think you know, that back in two thousand thirteen John Hoven an crafted a border security amendment that passed with sixty nine votes in a Senate where Republicans were in the minority. I'm a junior Senator from Tennessee and sixty nine people voted for forty six billion dollars to secure our border. It was overly prescriptive and it was overkill, but our borders would've been secure not long ago. Just a few months ago, the president could have received twenty five billion dollars in border security, just by dealing with the dreamers, which by the way, most Republicans want to deal with the dreamers issue. So we had twenty five billion that could have been spent on border security now the government is. Shutdown over what all the way is going to be two billion dollars. This is a made up fight. So the president can look like he's fighting. But even if he wins our borders, you're going to be insecure in part of it is because of what we're spending the money on. We have all kinds of technology, as you know, that we can use to secure the borders. The Forty-six bay did include seven hundred miles of fencing which was important, but there's all kinds of technology that we use in Iraq and Afghanistan to secure our borders. And so it's not unlike going to the Pentagon and saying look we need to buy fighters, and we have stealth fighters and their supersonic, and they have precision guided missiles, but but no, let's let's use the Wright brothers. And so this is not just about the money. It's about what we're spending it on. So we could secure our borders. We could solve this problem. This is a made up fight. And I would just tell. Citizens across our country that turn this off, but focus on the significant things the fact that we just announced we're pulling out of Syria. I want to get to that. In a second thing that I wanna give. One second..

"State of the union. I'm Jake tapper Republicans in the Senate are poised to do something unusual this week break with President Trump over his Saudi Arabia policy. This comes as new insight into the scope of the Muller probe is putting more pressure on both the White House and on Republican lawmakers who have been supportive of the president. Joining me now is Republican Senator Marco Rubio, a Florida. He's a member of the Senate intelligence and foreign relations committee. Senator Rubio, thanks so much for joining us. I wanted to get want to get all those issues. I talked about in the in the open in a moment. But first I want to ask you about retiring chief of staff John Kelly speaker Ryan called him a quote force for order clarity. And good sense. If the last year was an example of order, clarity and good sense. Are you at all concerned about what happens next with a White House without John Kelly? Well, it depends where they put in as a replacement as I said, I'm a huge John Kelly fan. I've known him since this time. He he served in Florida in Miami. He was his last assignment before retiring from the military was running southern command and did a great job there. He did a great job at homeland security, and we had a great working relationship with him as the chief of staff. There's always turn over in that position. Obviously, it's every president has a at least a couple. And so obviously, it's a loss to see him go. And now we'll see who they put there's a replacement, and and we'll go from there. But hopefully, it'll be someone he's hard to replace. There's no doubt about it. But hopefully, it'll be someone just as qualified just strong that gets. It's good for our country to have someone like that in that post. Let's turn to new court filings this week from the southern district of New York. Here's what they wrote about former Trump lawyer in fixer, Michael, Colin, quote, while many Americans who desire to particular outcome to the two thousand sixteen election knocked on doors or toiled at phone banks coincide to influence the election from the shadows. He did so by orchestrating secret and ill. Illegal payments, unquote. Now, prosecutors say Michael Cohen made the payment quote in coordination with and at the direction of then candidate, Donald Trump. You were a candidate for president in two thousand sixteen running against Donald Trump. Does it bother you that they were breaking campaign laws allegedly in order to win the election? Well, not from that night about me. I mean, it will not happen. I was well thought of the race. It's about the country. It's about what our laws are in about the fact that no one should be above the law from the very beginning of all of this. I said what we deserve the truth. No one has beneath the law, meaning no one is not entitled to the protections of it. But also, no one is above it. So I would just say that we want to know everything that we will know everything that's happened here at some point Mr. Cohen has a version of it. Obviously, the those who are accused of potentially accused as part of it have another. We don't know what additional information of Justice department has to corroborate some of this. They don't necessarily have to put that in the in these filings because their sentencing filings, so my interest from the very beginning. And all of this is for all the information to be out there before the. American people. So that the court system can make traditional Justice decisions and the American people can make political decisions and congress as well. So I'm gonna wait for all of that to come forward. Obviously, this is relevant information. And and things that cannot and should not be ignored. If it is proven that the president directed an aide to commit felonies to influence the election..

"For instance, lots more documented in his new book called shade, our Jake tapper spoke to Sousa all about it and Pete Souza joins me now. Thanks so much for being here Pete. So you tackle some pretty serious subjects in here. I mean, it's fun, but there's some seriousness in here you posted this photo of President Obama meeting with young refugees in Malaysia that was right around the time of Trump's ban on immigration from several majority Muslim countries in this one. It's a response to a Trump tweet claiming President Obama did nothing after being told about Russian election interference this photo. You shared of President Obama seeming to be confronting Putin September two thousand sixteen and after President Trump brag that the mission was accomplished after strike in Syria. Are you posted? This photo cramps. Your most iconic photo of the president and his team in the situation room during the raid that ultimately led to Osama bin Laden's, death, and you wrote quote back when a mission was actually accomplish. What do you what do you because it's not just fun with shade? I mean, there's some serious things you're saying about the last president and the current one. What do you want people to take away from the book? I don't want. I don't want people to forget the first five hundred days of the Trump administration, which is what this represents. And all the craziness that happened. I'm also trying to correct some of his lies and falsehoods with photographic proof. Whether it'd be the inauguration day crowd, whether it be him saying that Obama did nothing about Russia's meddling. And here's the the meeting where Odom. Oh, confronted Putin. Yeah. You also touch on President Trump's use of Twitter, perhaps you would say misuse of Twitter after President Trump threatened Russia. On Twitter for the supportive series Assad. You posted this photo President Obama you wrote President Obama in two thousand thirteen as he waited for a phone call with one of our allies to discuss the situation in Syria. He certainly never sent out an impulsive tweet about a serious national security crisis when you were photographing serious moments like this, did you ever think that you'd be using them as an example of peers, how a president should actually believe not at all. I never would have expected. I would be doing this. If if John McCain or Mitt Romney had been president I wouldn't be doing this because they respected the office of the presidency. And that's what we don't see from this president. It's interesting you say that because I always thought of you because I would see you a lot back when you were not the White House photographer when you were just a regular photographer news media. And then when you're at the White House with Iraq. I always thought if you is fairly a-political, frankly, and I know that you were also with the former photographer for President Reagan. And you've really until the Trump administration never criticize anyone or said anything political in any way. So what is it about this moment in this president that is that it's changed? You. What's changed me is is what I said. I think he disrespects the office of the presidency, and he disrespects other people. He bullies people. He lies. He doesn't he called you guys. The enemy of the people. He doesn't believe our own intelligence agencies. He trashes his own attorney general and what he calls his Justice department. So it's just there's just too many things that is not normal for a president to be doing. You also included some lighthearted posts as as I said, this is a book that's mixed with seriousness and some fun. I mean, it is called shade this Halloween themed one this is a President Obama greeting Halloween trick or treaters this is hours after president. Trump tweeted witch-hunt in response to Robert Muller's investigation, you a different kind of witch hunt. So you're having some fun. I'm having some fun. And I think especially on Instagram. I'm trying to inject some humor, and I'm trying to be somewhat respectful to in the way that I criticize, and certainly I think it'd being more respectful, then he is on Twitter. Hutus a great to see you again..

"Hello. I'm Jake tapper in Washington where the state of our union is utterly devastated. Eleven innocent people were brutally murdered Saturday. When an anti-semitic gunman opened fire inside, a Pittsburgh synagogue, turning a peaceful place of worship and hope into a crime scene of death and destruction. The gunman armed with a semi automatic assault weapon. And at least three handguns stormed the sanctuary shouting antisemitic slurs to police officers in two swat officers were wounded in the confrontation one FBI official called it, quote, the most horrific crime scene he had ever seen today. The alleged gunman is in custody and facing twenty nine federal charges, including hate crimes on Saturday. President Trump denouncing anti-semitism and called for the death penalty. This evil anti semitic attack is an assault on all of us. It's an assault on humanity. It will require all of us working together to extract the hateful poison of anti-semitism from our world the brutal slaughter in Pittsburgh ends. What has been a hate filled week in America, a male bomber terrorized former presidents and others whom President Trump has singled out for criticism, including CNN and a shooter targeted and murdered to African Americans in Kentucky after trying and failing to get into a predominantly black church. All of this in today's before what has been described as likely the deadliest attack on Jews in the history of the United States. Joining me now is the mayor of Pittsburgh Bill Peduto, mayor doodo, thanks so much for joining us. And I'm so sorry that it's under these circumstances that we're talking. Thank you. We saw so many of your city's residents coming together for that very moving vigil last night. I know you personally knew some of the victims. How is Pittsburgh copen? Our hearts broken. We are a small city what affects one community affects all of us. And right now, I would say that there's a shock that is over the city. But you know, Pittsburgh's a strong city. We are a people that have a strong resilience, and we will get through this. I know the investigation into the shooter's moving forward his motive seems obvious from his social media posts. But what if you learned from law enforcement about why you know, as they try to figure out why this happened. Well, the investigation is obviously continuing right now the social media posts were discovered early while the situation was still ongoing. It seems that the motive is very clear that he had sought out this one synagogue because of activities that they had done working with refugees and immigrants and that his message of hey was against our Jewish community. We've learned a lot from the shooter's social media posts, which are just vile, anti semitism and anti immigrant sentiment worth authorities aware of any of these posts prior to this horror. And and do you think that authorities should have been aware of them or made aware of them by people at the social media companies? Absolutely not. There was no information on this actor there was nothing to create a red flag or an alert to something that would be any type of illegal activity. Let alone something this horrific. President Trump spoke out and condemned anti-semitism after the attack he says he's heading to Pittsburgh were you satisfied with the president's response to this massacre. Well, right now, our concern is really with the victims families and with those that had been injured, including our own police officers, the president's assistance in having federal officials coming to Pittsburgh in having F B I officials from around the country coming here is really what we've been concentrating on. In addition to the eleven killed, obviously several individuals were very seriously wounded, including police officers. How are they doing? Was able to visit with one of the officers yesterday. I'll be visiting with two of the other officers this morning with the officer that I visited his spirits were high. He was one of the two swat officers who were wounded in the gunfire. He actually had his artery severed in could've been much much worse. If it weren't for his partner in placing attorney kit on him at that moment, a rightful in three handguns recovered from the scene of the shooting. Do we know anything about these these firearms where they purchased legally? Is there anything in this in the shooter's background that should have prevented him from being able to purchase them? Yeah. Right now, there's a combined effort on law enforcement at local state and federal level part of that investigation is on.

"Welcome back to state of the union. I'm Jake tapper. We are live here in Tampa Florida where I will be moderating the Florida's governor is debate tonight at eight PM believe it or not. The two candidates have never met each other. They will tonight with sixteen days to go until the midterm elections and with the president facing the reality, the Democrats, many of them impeachment hungry could take back the house. He's back in no holds barred, campaign mode going back to what works in two thousand and sixteen seizing on a line immigration message and endorsing violence against journalists, seemingly even as he accuses Democrats of inciting the mob you me now Senator Ben Sasse Republican from Nebraska. He's the author of a new book called them why we hate each other and how to heal a Senator SAS, thanks for joining us. Your book deals with why the country is so divided right now. I was reading it while this happened. I want you to take a listen to what President Trump had to say recent rally, and he mentioned that Montana, congressman. Ultimately pleaded guilty to physically assaulting a journalist whose prime was he tried to ask him a question about healthcare. Take a listen. Guys that can do a body slam. He's Mike. And I said, oh, this is terrible. He's gonna lose the election. Then I said, well, wait a minute. I know Montana pretty well. I think it might help him. Senator you write quite compelling in your book about the the need for all of us in America to see the humanity of each other. And I have to say, I've been surprised at how quiet Republicans have been about the president of the United States, joking about criminal assault on a reporter. What was your reaction to that? I gotta admit, I don't follow the rallies closely, but you know, I believe that the first amendment is the beating heart of the American experiment. So we need to have a president who celebrates the first amendment and not pretends that beaten up a reporter is okay, but I think what you hear from a lot of Nebraska who also, I think, too now, most of the rallies is sort of a short term long term thing going on, and people feel like the president's rhetoric is kind of short term playful. I don't think it's okay, but I do think most people tune most of it out. I think what we need to be having a conversation about is the long term of how does the next generation understand the American experiment. Because right now we don't have much shared sense of what it is. But it's not playful to joke about assault. Is it. No, the was convicted of a crime and the first amendment free speech, press religion, assembly, protests the right of redress of grievances. These are things we believe our rights that three hundred and twenty million Americans have not just government gives us these rights, but because there are rights by nature, the founders would have said and governments are shared project to secure them. So we need a president and all other elected officials to be stewarding and shepherding are shared understanding of that to the next generation. So no, it's not okay. But I do think that it's sort of baked into the president, stock price that sort of this amoral Listrik take he has on it. He's just what most people think the president's gonna do. And most people were, I live sort of ignore most of it something. It's funny, some are really anxious about it, but most people just think, well, that's kind of how the president talks. We need to do better than that. But I also think there's, there's a danger in pretending each new rally is immediate urgent. I wish she did it differently. Obviously. You're on the Senate Armed Services committee. I want to ask you about the US response to the murder of alpha shook..

"It's crazy when i guess you don't wanna talk about it so i will well we do talk about it but this these are these are i guess ten if you're an infinite issue tweet what was cnn talk about is i'm very including what we would talk a lot more about the the issue if he's not diverting you would not because we we do anyway and we do but because he's tweeting a lot this weekend i have to ask you about it because you're the answer you mentioned komi and that we would talk about him later so the president repeatedly has called him a liar just hours after commes memos released the president tweeted this james commes memo's just out and show clearly that there was no collusion obstruction also he leaked classified information while we'll the witch hunt continue so here's my question if comas aligarh how can the memos show that the president is vindicated how can the president have it both ways very easy first of all coney said conflicting things on his own book tour for this week he can't even keep his story straight when he's out there among what he thinks he's going to be a hero's welcome with the mainstream media unfortunately many people including your own jake tapper push back on him really filleted him last week this is jim komi who in those memos never says the president is states obstructed justice told the president at least three times that he wasn't under investigation and never in those memos down does then fbi director jim komi say he's told anybody in the justice department that he's concerned about the president's credibility or conduct he doesn't bother to do that so he's already a proven proven leaker in liar and by the way ask nobody else no other than andrew mccabe is former number two who's attorney this week was pushing back on jim komi and they're arguing about intimate cave now has criminal referral just this week because of lying about leaking to the press think about that lying about leaking to the press number two at the fbi now in a battle with the number one at the fbi they presided there were enough bi that never.

"Well the campaign he made an accusation he said bannon brought you on the campaign and miller said i learned the game before ban okay all that just say bad performance by both guys can we agree there i don't think it's this take down of the mainstream media that everyone is claiming it is it was obviously stephen miller women live time he was given more than twelve minutes to i mean limits of jake tapper interrupting him idyllic totally agree with you he went in there with his agenda as do all white house flax go in there with their bullet points that they're going to him stephen miller is a robot is highly intelligent robot and he was going to hit his points he wasn't going to answer certain of jake tapper questions but that doesn't excuse tapper temperate two premises that we're just flat out false that he kept hammering in my question i don't care about that and called them fault and then moved along he tried to but jake kept interrupting he kept interrupting if he did say that was false the russia lawn was in the top of the thing but i don't even really mind that i don't care of jake tapper is going to hit a white house aide pretty hard i suppose that's his job my question is the glibness the snark do you think that in this media age of this kalicki click beatty age where so much of politics is now entertainment do we need that were is there a place for journalists like a jake tapper circa two thousand nine who can cut all of that out and just be really be a real bulldog but just stick with the facts i i think it there's definitely a place for that but i think unfortunately you're going to have a very few people proven by your monologue that that i think would try triumph that i think some people out there only want to hear what they want to hear for their side in their guy.

"Then i have bad news for you because it's only going to get colder and not just for dc but so many areas right now it feels like minus two in minneapolis two in buffalo and minus eight in boston but we have another wave coming in so you'll see those temperatures remain cold in fact if you wake up tomorrow in boston it's going to feel like minus nineteen minus eight on saturday chicago the temperatures are only going to get colder as we go through the week and the reason for that is the next wave of cold air it's going to push back down into the region the thing is it's also going to dip pretty far south in fact places like dallas may not even reach the freezing mark on monday atlanta may not even reach 35 dan ah on monday so again this is going to be a pretty widespread area of cold air and this bitter cold isn't just uncomfortable it's dangerous for a lot of people what should people do to avoid risk rates so the best thing i can say especially for the folks who have a new year's eve celebrations outside again we talk about the temperatures potentially in new york about eleven at midnight with the feels like temperature in the negative numbers layers that's the best advice i can give you layers upon layers upon layers because this is likely going to be the coldest one they've had since 1962 and the thing you have to understand is when you are outside your body naturally has a layer of heat on the outside of it expands a couple of temperatures but when that wind comes indiana that takes away that layer of heat so the more layers you can put on the better it will be for you if you are outside allison chinchar thank you so much better and earn andy in anderson them me that's all i can say that's it for the lead i'm dana bash in for jake tapper turn overture briana killer in for wolf blitzer in the situation room.
