What to Expect From Biden's First Foreign Trip as President

"Biden already well into his second day, now his first full day of activities of his first overseas trip as chief executive. Clayton Neville reports on the first round of activities. Michael the president and first lady were greeted by American troops and their families at Royal Air Force milled in home. The first lady assured the troops that supporting them is her top priority. You are heroes, and that's why supporting you is so personal to US President Biden embarking on an eight day trip with the purpose of reasserting the US on the world stage at every point along the way. We're gonna make it clear that the United States is back. And democracies of the world are standing together to tackle the toughest challenges and the issues that matter most to our future. That we're committed to, leading with strength. Defending our values. And delivering for our people. The trip started with some good news from the White House. The Biden administration announced an agreement with Visor to purchase 500 million covid vaccine doses to be donated to more than 90 lower income countries over the next year. Busy week for the president to laid out his agenda. I'm heading to the G seven, then to the NATO ministerial and then Meet with Mr Putin to let him know. What I want him to know. That meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin will come in Geneva next weekend, of course, is one of the more high profile meetings on the trip with a rising number of cyberattacks linked to groups in Russia. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the president's discussion with Putin will be significant. It's about a relationship of clarifying What our expectations are and laying out that if certain kinds of harmful activities continue to occur, there will be responses from the United States. The dreams aspirations fears and challenges that are faced each day make every individual unique in our understanding or interactions with these individuals. It's been a minute and a half. It's been a minute and a half. I think is what they would say. It's been that long. It seems i've been good man. I've been good excited to jump back in. Thank you to those serving our country from us at the little things our main goal is to show you that by appreciating the little things in life and understanding what the people around us are enduring we can increase everyone's quality of life the question of the day. What is something that people misunderstand about you. Jake we talk about it over and over and over again and how much people view us in how it impacts us. What are your thoughts. I love it. Man i love it. I'm so excited to dive into season for. This is a great question and one that i was obviously posed during cardboard confessionals again huge props to the students that took took part in participated in this project. But i'm excited to dive in because it is something that i'm passionate about. I know you're passionate about it. And we've actually dove into this in a couple of episodes throughout our time here but this is the question now. So what we're gonna find out is what the kids had to say. You know Being misunderstood is something that's very very relevant in today's society especially with everyone and everything information pictures etc. is at the hand of our fingertips at all times. So i think it's important to to slow down and reflect on this and really dive and looking forward to a man. Yeah i think a lot of people looking back on that are impacted by people sites. And what they what they feel about them how they're they're misunderstood and how they're perceived in what society thinks of them as an individual that really bothers some people and it and it changes their course of their development and their growth in in where. They're going where they wanna go. So i think Kind of talking through this one throughout the season. There's gonna be some bumps in the road. And i think we're going to be able to share some personal stories about this Really looking forward to it..

And we just got back from penn stack and we are just driving down seventy five north just rocking out to music having fun windows down on all four sides and all of a sudden comes this random person it looked like they are driving a corvette day. Start tailgating me and my friend. We were literally the only ones out on the road. We're like the hey. Let's go mess with them. And i'm like heck. Yeah we're going. We're going to teach him a lesson. And of course i don't play nice when it comes to tailgaters. I really i really don't. I'm like the enforcer on the road. Because i teach them you know. Hey the closer you get the slower. I'm going to go. But i don't harm anyone. Of course. I just do that to tell them. Hey don't do this so anyway. We're like yeah. Let's let's mess with them for a bit. See what happens. Speed limits to seventy five on a highway. The guys tailgating me and my friend. The two other lanes are open. No excuse me. Three lanes were the only two cars on the highway. This point everywhere. Everyone else's six sixteen hundred feet back like way back there at this point. The car behind Switches lanes and we do the same thing we switch over to the right lane and he's tailgating us both keep switching lanes until we both go off the exit ramp. We go off the exit ramp and their tailgating and slowing down and we return to get off other road. We come face to face with the driver and it's not a guy but it's a woman so me and my friend at this point. Had the windows up in the music turned down to medium. We both realized we were just making a woman very upset and she was like in her

A Desperate Writer Steals 'the Plot'

"Let's start with the premise of this book. And i i want to say upfront. There are a number of big twists plot to us in this book and we are not going to give away anything. So if you haven't read the book please don't fear. We will not ruin it for you. But give us the premise. The is about a a writer who i think we can. Safely say has failed is failing is well on his way to complete obscurity and he is seen in a pretty bottom of the barrel. Mfa program a low residency mfa program in into his classroom into his depression about his life walks. Just the worst of all possible students. He's arrogant he's dismissive. He has no time for anybody especially his teacher. Jake and he basically says i donate any of you people because i am writing this great novel that is going to be so successful that all of the good things that we book world are aware are going to happen to this novel. And jake ecorse dismisses this as the the arrogance of the young and the the early career writer the untried writer but then during a private conference he actually. Here's this plot and he unfortunately realizes that everything that this guy has said is going to come true. Some years later when he's even closer to the terminus of his own career he discovers that this young man has died and has died pretty soon after their encounter air. Go there is no book. There's not even a manuscript. There's only this story and as any writer would agree. This is a story that has to be told so. He writes his own novel with the story and all of the good things that his former student has predicted come true but he can't really enjoy it because he so terrified that somebody is going to step out of the shadows and accused him immense. Somebody does and the rest of the novelist really about his trying to steer clear of this person tried to avoid the disaster that this person represents for his professional life in his personal life and also ultimately to find out who this person is and where the story came. But Paul Manafort definitely did He dealt with this guy constantly, Kalinic. Except for the fact that constant clinic was an Obama administration source. So Gates it's Jake Tapper Jake tapper on it and says, Hey, you got any evidence about that? Check this out. It was very clear through State Department cables from the U. On a host of information that was coming of Ukraine as well as other countries that I'm not even aware of the Senate intelligence just to say that there was a Russian operative. That's according to the Senate, the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee that's not from the media. That's from the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee. That's correct. But where's the evidence? There's been no evidence to the contrary. And more importantly, why did they include the evidence that does exist, which is the State Department cables? U. S. "Very concerned Jake we we are self sorting for a declining demographic a narrowing demographic of elderly people rural people are you still a Republican think about leaving the party I don't know I am a Republican I believe we have the better argument in the area of economic and business regulation but I don't think we have the better argument on gun violence Environment Florida Republican Congressman Francis Rooney telling me earlier this morning about his concerns with his own party Rooney is not ruling out backing it impeachment inquiry and he announced his retirement just yesterday let's discuss Amanda what do you think I mean this is this is a problem that we hear from other Republicans that the there is very little room in their party right now for any independence from President Trump Yeah and you see that playing out now Syria which I do think we've reached a breaking plant and Gulf feeling comfortable and able to criticize the President President because Congress does have a role to play in these decisions and president trump made aerobic decision to pull out of Syria out of nowhere and there's no rationale provided no briefings to Congress that I've heard about and they're responsible for these Asian so you can't be in the position where you're responsible for decision that you have no input in and let's bring in new CNN contributor commentator Congressman Sean Duffy thanks so much for being here congratulations and being joining the CNN family what do you make of what Congressman Rooney said. I respectfully disagree I mean if you look at the Republican Party winning union voters rural voters we're doing better than we ever have now if you want to say we don't Wall Mikasa in in New York New England in the West Coast of California Yeah that's true but in the middle of America we have to actually keep the Senate and we have so many house seats we are doing incredibly well swell respectfully disagree with with Francis and Colorado that's a state that president trump did not win cory gardner is a senator there who's running for re election is it true the trump is has expanded the Republican No. I don't think so jake I think anybody who's watched one of president trump's mega-rallies would pacific disagree with represented Duffy's characterization racial lines religious lines and so many others I don't think he's going to do well in Colorado he's deeply unpopular in our state. Let's turn to some of the Big News Jen Psaki I WANNA get your response came in only in exchange for those countries doing something about illegal immigration but then he did including from Congressman Rooney saying there was no quid pro quo well first of all it was complete malpractice to put Mulvaney out at that briefing and having spent eight suggesting that looking for political dirt on your opponent like Joe Biden or anyone else and doing that through diplomacy is normal it is not normal.

"Treats victims differently jake. We should also note that under his watch around the same time this plea agreement was negotiated. There were several other sex trafficking cases brought that resulted in much tougher sentences. Even though none of those had dozens of victims like this one did Kaitlyn Collins. I said the Justice Department. Thank you so much <hes>. Let's let's talk about this right now. <hes> A BARBARA COMSTOCK DOC <hes>. Let me ask you a question when you hear a cost to say the today's world is very different than the world of two thousand seven two thousand eight when it comes to victims. You've worked on anti-trafficking legislation. You worked with the Justice Department under both you know a Kosta is that true or is there more of an understanding of victims and different. I mean whatever issues he's talking about. Well over the past ten years when I was in the State House and in Congress we have passed lots of anti human trafficking legislation to improve the situation I've talked to dozens of victims and that's why I would ask and even beg that we focus on the women here first and foremost and getting them justice and Kudos to the reporting on this and then this is now being prosecuted again Epstein. There's all kinds of things you can go at him on financial things. How did he make money you know when someone's engaged in all kinds of activities like this? There's a money trail. That's probably criminal dot needs to be looked at. I would hope somehow somebody could freeze his assets right now so all of these young girls who were victimized by him who should not be blaming themselves that broke my heart to see that girl blaming herself for not coming forward about something that these predators due to that and that's the the secondary victimisation optimizations so none of these young girls blaming themselves they need justice. I'd like to see that Epstein financially bankrupted and then we need to Do D._O._J.. Congressional investigations of how this case was handled on the state and federal level. I think that there needs to be a lot that was the beginning of discussion today but there needs to be a lot more that goes into it but first and foremost let's focus on these young girls and getting them justice. I'm confident there's a lot more victims out there and there's a lot more people a new about things in procured these girls and who also should be brought to justice abby from your perch at the White House you have covered the president as he has faced allegations not from minors but from women and I can't say that they were treated with truant disrespect by the world and the idea that there's no victim blaming in twenty nineteen is completely preposterous for anyone who's been paying attention so it is a puzzling Caitlyn's point is really important. There were other cases at that time. I'm that were prosecuted so I think it's hard to believe that somehow. The world is so dramatically different. Yes we're talking about it more. Maybe we're paying attention to it more but victims face the same challenges today as they did then and <hes> and this administration the situation actually frankly has kind of a problem with this. This is the president who when he's asked about women accusing him of sexual assault says they're not my type and that's where they start on this issue and it makes it harder for them to have credibility on it in a case like this and I think out Sukasto was reaching for an excuse or some explanation for what happened <hes>. It seems that what's really going on here. Is that <hes> Jeffrey. Epstein is an extraordinarily wealthy powerful politically connected person. That's why he believed it was going to be a gamble a roll of the dice to take this to court as opposed to Satellite Ryan constable urged to to do this press conference by President Trump. Obviously he is trying to save his this job but who knows if it worked or not. How do you think he did? What I think the consensus that it wasn't so great for the fact that he couldn't answer Caitlyn's very important question? Would you still do this deal today means. He can't defend the deal. If you can't say you would do it again you you can't defend it and politically you know the question about whether he will resign after this or not or the White House will push him out. It doesn't seem like it's in anyone's interest to have him sticking around right. It doesn't seem like the White House has much of an interest in this story worry festering for them. Especially given the credible accusations against president trump a lot of most democrats are now on the side of calling for his resignation. He's had connections to Democrats which is going to be a political issue. <hes> going forward there eight Democrats that voted to confirm him when a lot of these facts were known <hes> and I don't what's what's in the interest for costas stick around and sort of you know take this take this level of criticism so I would be surprised if he's the labor secretary. I mean there are a lot of people who do that job. If you were advising president trump what would you tell him to do. Cut them loose now sir now now the Labor is came out in the press conference Labor Department. One of its many massive duties is to crack down on human trafficking enforcing some of these laws. Ah Barbara was talking about part of that enforcement is a fund that Congress set up to give grants to foreign countries where sex trafficking victims are coming from where they're essentially enslaved. This makes you proud as an American Mr Costa's justice secretary cost of the trump administration called cut that fund by eighty percent. He was asked about the press conferences well. Let's just Washington Congress. Put the money back in. It's no big deal when you have a record like that giving risk slap to a sex trafficker and now your job is to enforce the laws. Awesome Sex Trafficker Andrew trying to repeal the money congress is giving you to do it yeah. I think it's pretty good case you oughta go as Barbara's. This is a huge issue for conservatives especially evangelical community over the decades in it. It's been a bipartisan issue that we have worked together the other on and it please. Let's focus on these women getting justice because we've talked a lot about these guys you know in the trump administration secretaries come and go every week so you know I I think the real important thing here is how these women going to get justice. Everyone stick around president trump says he could no longer work with him and now the British ambassador is going out the door but major questions remain about the impact of what he said about President Trump..

"Internationally new details and reaction coming in on the ex school resource officer and former sheriff's deputy arrested today in connection to the parkland massacre. Scott Peterson faces eleven criminal counts including child neglect. Culpable negligence and perjury. I wanna CNN's Rosa Flora's in Miami and Rosa, the charges come after a fourteen month investigation by the Florida Department of law enforcement, some parents of the victims of the parkland massacre, weighing in what did they have to say some of them are going to Twitter and they're calling him a coward thing that he deserves to go to jail, my colleague, Diane Gallagher, God, this reaction from Fred. Gutten Burke's, one of the parents saying, quote, I have no comment at except to say rot in hell, Scott Peterson. You could have saved some of the seventeen you could have saved my daughter, you did not then you lied about it and you deserve the misery coming your way. Now jake. We're also learning more about how Scott Peterson was taken into custody. This is according to sheriff, Greg Tony. He says that Peterson was in BSO headquarters at a termination hearing when he was taken into custody and Jake, we have covered this story, extensively, you and I know that Peterson had retired. So we're all wondering we a termination hearing. What are we talking about here? Well Peterson is receiving about eight eighty seven hundred dollars in pension a month. Getting a fishery officially terminated by BSO puts that money in jeopardy puts his pension in jeopardy. Jake Flora's, thank you so much for that report. Appreciate it. The National League now in part of a move to make the president's former campaign manager pardon proof prosecutors want to send Paul Manafort, to one of the most notorious deals on the planet Rikers island in New York City. "But the other point Jake is that it really does to your point make make an also clear point, which is even in the office of someone who has been an advocate for women and women's rights and All People's rights. There's no office citizen MU from this kind of behavior. And that's something that we're going to have to deal with. And it is a sad statement. You have said that you think the country is ready for a president who is a woman of color, not necessarily you. Right. But a woman of color at the same time. You also talk very movingly and compellingly in your book and elsewhere about misogyny, sexism, racism anti-semite. Yeah. But square the circle how is the country ready for this? If this problems if these problems are still so prevalent, and when are you going to make your decision, I will make my decision soon. Not at this very moment. But I will say that we have to give the American people more credit, and we have to understand that the American public and the people of our country are smart people who will make decisions about who will be their leader. Based on who they believe is capable who. They believe has an honest desire to lead to represent to see them to be a voice for them. Even if they have no power, and those are the kinds of people who we are as a country, and so the pundits can talk all day and all night, and there's a lot of chatter about which demographic will do this or that it has been my life's experience that the American people are smart, and they make decisions based on what's in the best interest of their household their family and their community, and I have faith that in twenty twenty and in any other election that would be their motivation when they've. Vote. Do you think that people spend too much time talking about the fact that you were I wanna district attorney San Francisco first woman, attorney, general, California, first African American all all those trailblazing things you did these did they spend too much time talking about that. And not they compliments. I think that people talk about both. I I'm proud when people talk about the fact that I created one of the first reentry initiatives of any DA's office in the country when I was district attorney of San Francisco focused on first time offenders, and what we need to do to reform the criminal Justice system. I'm proud when they talk about the fact that I was the first attorney general to create a bureau of children's Justice focused on education understanding that there's a directed connection between public education in public safety. I'm proud when they talk about the fact that I was one of the first to focus on what we need to do around digital forensics and cyber security. I'm proud about all of my first and these two books also. Yeah, I know I children's. Second second for grownups for children's who are everywhere and the truths. We hold an American Journey. Thanks so much for being here. Really, really appreciative. We have more breaking news, a family and complete stock after a woman coma for more than a decade had a baby. "He thinks maybe they could just ask your father for. More money, but they can't the president calmly said. I guess you're still not wanting to deal with the problem. So they're the Democrats are are being pretty clear. They don't want to have any conversations at all about the border about the wall about the wall until the government is funded. And and the Republicans are saying that the president will not reopen the government until he gets border security money that being said the president's offered to Nancy Pelosi in the situation room today was if you if if I reopened the government right now, will you agree within the next thirty days to border security that includes a wall Pelosi said no to that. But it's also not the first time that offer has been made in their last situation room meeting. The president made basically the same offer Democrats rejected it then too. So this was the second time around for that offer. And it's not surprising Jake that it was rejected by Democrats who've been saying from the very beginning. They just want to fund the government as it currently stands. They do not want to go into a protracted negotiation over controversial wall that they their members don't support and border security in a crisis. They don't also don't believe is the way that the White House. Describes it Jake or w Phil thanks so much. Let's talk about this all clearly things have taken a horrific term. It does seem as though Nancy Pelosi is closing the door to any wall funding as part of any agreement, and I wonder since there is some history for big comprehensive immigration reform in which included some wall funding or at least border security funding. Why she didn't just take that opportunity to say we would be willing to talk about anything if there were a big immigration reform package. But right now, we're focused on on opening the government think this goes back to trust. But and because of both sides on trust each other. There is no trust between any side of of the different factions. And I'll tell you being on the hill today, they are dug in on either sides while the president's speech wasn't exactly a resounding success a did rally. Julie House Republicans where you had a lot of members waving some may still vote with Democrats but talking to. Them coming out of that meeting today. They were ready. They were ready to hunker down. And for the shutdown to continue until they get what they want a ticket. Listen to the house minority leader Kevin McCarthy. Just now speaking about how the meeting went. And the way they have displayed and there'd be aviator is embarrassing to me. I tell the Democrats gets back into the room. Let's not leave less solve this problem. Just as president said, it doesn't even take forty five minutes were here. And we want to work vocal your response. Yeah. I don't think we should take for granted that President Trump for the others being entirely honest to characterizing exactly what was your point. Is right. Look, there's an appropriations process they will be homeland security Bill the that there will be amendments in order in committee and probably on the floor, and they will get to vote on whether they want to have five with seven billion for the wall at one point six billion or zero maybe secret Pelosi could have made that clear President Trump. He doesn't know a lot about how congress works, but the Republicans do control the Senate they can pass the five point six and set it over to the house..

"Folks that there's nothing to see here steve bannon is actually lending credence to the argument here's we'll see if he is called to be a senate committees on capitol hill here but all this is coming jake as the president is you know he's acting sort of strangely in the first few days of 2018 years has that big tax bill just signed he was supposed to be promoting his agenda so far we have not seen him at one public event here at the white house and ask for tomorrow schedule no public events either jeff just last night we were discussing president trump taunting north korean dictator kim jonghoon talking about whose nuclear button is bigger is there any indication what what's fuelling this rage in this behavior on this the third day of two thousand eighteen well which i've talked to a lot of officials here and the basically the consensus is that the president is a little furious that the russia investigation is still going are dana bash and kevin look tackle reporting tonight that to the president of believed that this investigation would be over he listen to his lawyers who said initially thanksgiving now then the end of the year now it is still going on and he's being of course of led to believe that it's going to continue so that has sparked some outrage also arm told some pentup aggression from being in florida for so long but jake again so interestingly not talking about his agenda simply tweeting in private and again this was supposed to be a big year for him so much to do here in on capitol hill jake all right jab selling at the white house for us i wanna bring in my panel and joining us as a new contributor in his cnn debut democratic strategist joe trivia joe worked on the presidential campaign's of ted kennedy and walter mondale john edwards a howard dean as it was when i met him just to name a few he was also the campaign manager.

"Then i have bad news for you because it's only going to get colder and not just for dc but so many areas right now it feels like minus two in minneapolis two in buffalo and minus eight in boston but we have another wave coming in so you'll see those temperatures remain cold in fact if you wake up tomorrow in boston it's going to feel like minus nineteen minus eight on saturday chicago the temperatures are only going to get colder as we go through the week and the reason for that is the next wave of cold air it's going to push back down into the region the thing is it's also going to dip pretty far south in fact places like dallas may not even reach the freezing mark on monday atlanta may not even reach 35 dan ah on monday so again this is going to be a pretty widespread area of cold air and this bitter cold isn't just uncomfortable it's dangerous for a lot of people what should people do to avoid risk rates so the best thing i can say especially for the folks who have a new year's eve celebrations outside again we talk about the temperatures potentially in new york about eleven at midnight with the feels like temperature in the negative numbers layers that's the best advice i can give you layers upon layers upon layers because this is likely going to be the coldest one they've had since 1962 and the thing you have to understand is when you are outside your body naturally has a layer of heat on the outside of it expands a couple of temperatures but when that wind comes indiana that takes away that layer of heat so the more layers you can put on the better it will be for you if you are outside allison chinchar thank you so much better and earn andy in anderson them me that's all i can say that's it for the lead i'm dana bash in for jake tapper turn overture briana killer in for wolf blitzer in the situation room.

"Don't think this profound could not have been done with out exquisite presidential leadership been spinner year of extraordinary accomplishment for the trump administration all friends i mean i look at these people it's like were warriors together while this is the president who promised on the campaign trail that americans would be doing so much winning they would be sick of it i he is winning now at the question now remains what does this mean for 2018 they have big plans for other agenda items and this victory finally gives them a big boost going into this next year jake raw fill up at the white house forest my panel is here for more so here is the basic argument from the white house this is from the twitter feed of sarah sanders quote democrats waste of the year tearing the president down while the president built america back up booming economy millions of new jobs isis caliphat in ruins record number of judicial appointments obamacare individual mandate repealed historic tax cuts america great again i mean that's the argument they have a pitched amac well look the president's approval rating is hovering around thirty five percent and twothirds of the american public according to the cnn poll don't like this tax belt so not sure their argument is working think the problem they have that a blissful today no doubt be looked at their faces they were waiting for this moment but tomorrow they going to wake up and realize that the american people don't like this bill because it's a corporate tax cut and that and people realize that and recognize that that's an accurate understanding of the bill it is hard for them to campaign on that and tell the difference story because that's what the bill is the show the tax cuts for middle class are short term they're not permanent it also means that premiums will go up because of the individual mandate going away for middle class families and what we found in two thousand nine when we had the making work pay tax cut which was not a big tax cut but neither is this for the middle class is that people didn't really feel it and they weren't really voting on that so when they realise these other pieces it's going to be continued to be problematic as.

"Jake to the generals and to ashes point regarding the secondary market you want to hear something that is absolutely baffling is this there are a number of states in this country that do not require a citizen to report a lost or stolen firearm let that sink in for a second so a firearm falls into the hands of a bad guy and you're not compelled reported to the police so we can't tracked that down we know there are somewhere between two hundred seventy million and three hundred and ten million weapons in this country almost one for nearly every man woman and child and for there not to be a law on the books that requires a citizen compels them to report that it is insane after each of these events we always search for some type of legislative action that might have made a difference in a mighty admitted difference in this case maybe maybe not but down the road the next time we have an instant like this where weapons were stolen or lost or tosh in the generals point sold on the secondary market and we have no record of that we're gonna come back here again jaekun have the exact same conversation i wonder if you think that one of the issues here that we don't talk about enough as a society is domestic violence this is hardly the first time that somebody involved in one of these horrific shoot sorry was in the middle of a domestic dispute we know that a outside a different church in california the same day sunday a man shot and killed his estranged wife and her boyfriend in september in texas a man broke into his exwife's house during a football watch party opened fire killing eight people omar mateen the pulse nightclub shooter also accused of beating his wife osher whoa a society focus enough on this.
