Machines as kin or the new colonisers? Indigenous tech revolutionaries rethinking A.I

"Consider the machines. We make the robots we build the artificial intelligences the way programming. They're all designed to serve us rush. We have dominion over them. Not over us will follow a woman and technologists. Angie la believes this way of thinking about machines. It's like a computer bug in the program of western civilization and it's been programmed into all manner of things when we think about the different types of some call aji or agriculture or and then when we think about humans we can also refer slavery this the million over protocol comes from this understanding that men not women or not animal but man sits on top of all things in has priority over all manner of things within our world be and so what happens then is that we've got serious problems that are evolving within west and technologies. Mike technologies much critical technologies and cyber. Come out of the wool machine and so when we think about the origins of most of western technology. It's really problematic. The bias that we're finding in these systems. It's not a bug feature right. it's a feature white supremacy right. it's a feature of a worldview that understands the world and the people in in a particular way and so it. It shouldn't be a surprise to anybody that we're running into these problems and also why we keep running into them and we're gonna keep running into them. As long as we keep designing out of the same mindset which is a nicer mindset jason lewis as director of the initiative for indigenous futures and koterec's. What's called the aboriginal territories in cyberspace research network. He's professor in design and computation arts at concordia university in montreal. He's hawaiian and samoan but grew up in california. After he was adopted at six months. Old angie abdulah is found 'em boss woman of an indigenous consultancy called old ways new and on science fiction. I join you may natasha mitchell. For nine quakes. Celebration of aboriginal and torres strait islander. Culture always was always will be is the thing this year recognizing that first nations people have occupied and cared for these straddling continent for over sixty five thousand years. But jason angie want to extend that thinking to digital continents. Dj land as well and ask. How could the future of artificial intelligence look different. If more indigenous people are in the driver's seat what happens. If we actually consciously tried to take indigenous worldviews and use that as a starting point for building the systems thinking hard about how the technology we use as they're being constructed you know come out of a very particular sort of philosophical lineage. You know that sort of like kind of post enlightenment. Scientific revolution sort of like this emphasis on parasitism post cartesian of like you know the world is dividing these two to the physical world and then the spiritual world and they don't actually really needs you know all these things actually kind of inspect our assumptions about what technology is and what it could be. So what happens when you sort of take a different worldview rice or what happens if you take saying. Indigenous worldview a hawaiian worldview mohawk view. That doesn't have that clinton's duality right. That thinks about things in terms of their relationship to each other including if not in some ways privileging the non human right because that's also part of that intellectual lineage. Ride is the no man literally man not human. Man is the heightened center accretion that everything is sort of judged a comparison to him and also. He's only person really. Were talking to. But that's not the indigenous. Fosse's that i know of you know where there's the sense of relation even not only my in relationships are all other humans around the and i need to sort of be responsible to that and be reciprocal with that. But i'm also relationship with the non humans and i've been relationship with from the from the western context. We call things. So how does that change your approach to designing technology to extend this idea. You and colleagues explored the idea of making keen with machines. This idea that we have kinship relationships with non human entities like machines like artificial intelligences like robots. I mean tell us more about that because it it's one thing to incorporate a bird or a river or a tree or like haitian into your idea of kinship. Wouldn't miss shane bay. In a different category altogether. The machines are part of the natural world right so one of inheritances from this western monotheistic way of looking at things. Is this idea that there is something that is artificial in the world right. But they're made out of minerals in things drawn from the earth. It's just that we've crafted them in a particular way but they didn't come from some other real. They're not not part of the natural environment. And so i think that for me. That inside is one of the key insights. Okay we're creating this category which is really about separating ourselves from the things that we make out of this desire to use them and use them as we will and not have to worry or think about them and harrison to be provocative. Save them if we're talking about strong artificial intelligences that idea that artificial intelligence might one die possess will be designed to have consciousness. Then right we will necessarily be enslaving them. So yeah. what do you do when you've created a conscious being and if your mindset all along has been this is a tool. This is a tool the tool. I made it. I get to control it. Then you're going to run into some real problems right and we we already know. Western science has been used over and over again to justify labeling other people as non human. That's part of how the colonization of the americas and the pacific happened right. that's part of the justification is that they're not really human so we don't really have to worry about them. It's part of how then slave limit of say. Black people in the new world was justified. Because they're not really human so we can treat them however we like so we've already laid down a template. Many templates of you know making these judgments about what is worthy of our relationship is worthy of being in some kind of conversation with and there's a danger that will replay that template again with these machines.

Rhode Island voters drop 'Providence Plantations' from state name

"Kelly. One outcome. We know from this Election day, a name change for Rhode Island. It will no longer be known as quote the state of Rhode Island and Providence plantations. A ballot measure removes Providence plantations. That's right. A long time proponent of the change, state Senator Harold Metz. Says 10. Years ago, Rhode Islanders voted to keep the phrase because people didn't understand at the time. How hurtful but weird plantation of people of African American descent. Professor Linford Fisher of Brown University says the phrase goes back to the states earliest days. The first time we see the use of Providence plantations is in the 16 43 charter, Fisher says. Even if state founder Roger Williams did not use the word plantations to describe a large farm worked by enslave people, it was the word already loaded with meaning. So even if we want to say well wasn't with regard to slavery, it has a strong settler, colonial context of expanding and settling upon native lands. But the link between plantation and slavery was a familiar one. By that time, the Spanish have been spreading around two parts of central South America for 101 125 130 years they are building their empire on the back of first indigenous than African Slaven. This's no secret and the authors of the 16 43 charter would soon demand their own enslaved people. Within two or three years of coming to Bird Island. Roger Williams himself requests a piquant captive for his own servant or slave. Rhode Island ended up being Keith in the transatlantic slave trade. That means that we, actually as a state participated directly in the very thing. That this world has come to mean through the 18th and

And we include stories also of oppression not only that our community has faced but also oppressions within our own community say homophobia or caste system. I heard her oral history on the South Asian American digital archives website and I came across both the video and early history where she mentioned Berkeley and that immediately caught my Attention. Raimondo: RI will stay in Phase 3 until vaccine

"Governor Mondo saying Rhode Island will stay in phase three until the vaccine arrives. Mohr from 12 News is Kim Colonia was June 29th. When the governor made the announcement today. Everyone wants to know course the news is. Are you going to move us to phase three? The answer's yes. Rhode Island has stayed in phase three ever since and during her weekly interview on 12 news. Now it formed, the governor says that's not going to change anytime soon. As much as I would love to relax these regulations. I just I'm confident. That's not the right thing to do. We have to stay where we are in Phase three. And just hold on for a few more months until we have the vaccine. But despite an uptick in daily cases and hospitalizations, reaching their highest level since June, the governor says We're not going to move backwards either. So we're not there yet, in fact, not close to being there, but I will say this cam. It's not the trend we want to say, and I would ask what Islanders to try to be a little bit more careful. Small Small group gatherings. Maybe coffee after church. Maybe having a few friends over for dinner. We get relaxed. We don't wear wear masks. That's what we're seeing here is what we think is driving this increase, she says. The good news is the state's test. Positive rate is still under 2% and Rhode Island is testing a lot. Add to that testing regiment. The governor herself who's previously on Ly been tested twice once after her massless appearance at this June rally Now following President Trump's diagnosis that's going to change director of the Department of Health has suggested that I probably should get into a regular cadence. To Tackle Racial Disparities In COVID-19, California Enacts New Metric For Reopening

"State health officials are detailing a new equity measure that will affect how quickly counties can reopen during the covert 19 pandemic. KFBK is Tim Lance reports California Public health officer Dr Eric Upon says the equity metric is meant to keep people from being left behind during the recovery from Corona virus in places were black, Latino and Pacific Islander groups have suffered a disproportionate share of cases positivity of the most disadvantaged actually has to match the next least restrictive here. So we're incentivizing counties to reduce those infections across every neighbor. That raises the concern that the state's already slow process of reopening businesses and schools will move even slower, something Dr Pon admits counties that are not addressing. Yet those disparities Air not quite reaching the lower test positivity is in the areas that have the most disadvantaged with these opportunities are going to move slower through college and state health officials say they have nothing in the works beyond the current color tear reopening plan. When he is playing, it's just the lightning are so I hate to say it but there's so much more talented. When you see brain point on the ice we'll say I don't know. Maybe this was one of those things where they were like, Hey, we're up three one and let's roll the dice here. Let's make sure he's a hundred percent healthy of this was a game seven would throw him out there maybe now it's a game six, three, two advantage you might see him pushed through the injury I'm I'm not sure it's sort of like you know you gotTa make these decisions like the Yankees did with Glare Torres as they sit him down and they say, well, if this was the playoffs he would play. Zeke as I told you yesterday is is a huge blow for the islanders because he does so many little things and does a lot of the dirty and does a lot of great little things that you gotTa have happened in a hockey game if you WANNA, win it. So they're trying to manufacture different line combinations. They're moving players in and out for the first time they use seven defensemen by bringing up johnny boy and that paid dividends immediately that maniacs blocking shots and taking shots, the ribs and the hip and the legs and losing escape played and. All the things that could possibly happen to a guy who hasn't played since the beginning of August happened last night one game for that poor guy was. Know I'm sure he's in good condition. He's getting playing clipped hooked. He's getting all this up and he's like hitting these guys and he's coming back. He's throwing body checks he's punching them but he's like I'm not taking this. Yeah, and that's what you need and an Sarp Young Star player he's twenty one you know. I mean he was twenty. He's like why think five eleven like one seventy or something like guy but that guy's. Ten Skater. Bro He's one of the best in the game I'll say right now I'll say flat out he's probably a top skin in the game top top five skater. Because what you got connor mcdavid. Personal Barzel I would say to Quin. Hughes. From. Another metropolitan team. On. This are. I've got is fucking named. Top certainly up there is certainly up there. There's a lot of skaters out there a lot of a lot of top names that maybe not hidden right now, but he could be up there. Especially being so young too. But like, but that's what's scary about these young players they're gonNA want money. And then if the room's not there Wa- happens. Yeah. You'RE NOT GONNA friendly contracts I. Mean s thing with the canucks I mean or do they all believe? Do they want to be together? That's what I was. GonNa say. PD and brock seem like best friends. I mean, Besser took a bridge Dr. think it's two years for five point five, which is pretty good for Besser. PD Bison to. Whore vats five million contract has a captain well. GET PD WHO's Again I'll say it again, top ten center in the League. If you get him for like ten million. That's a steal for me. Hughes Hughes Besser, and PD also best friends. And you know I feel like I don't see many organizations. Yeah. percent. So I don't know if they can buy into it, they if they were to take somewhat team friendly deals and build something special down. Vancouver. Special. Powerhouse, the West Yeah Yeah, no I they're definitely young team that has all the pieces Italian you put them together on that puzzle and Zach goaltending situation man. Shit. That's the that's the the corvette. All right there. I'm already rolling my eyes thinking about it. This is gonNA. Suck. The better tonight they start in about ten minutes ten minutes what we brought it up to that up to the wire and other way too much longer which is nice. Sounds good to me. All right. Well, that was our first mini. The and we talked about stuff. But it's probably that probably fifty minutes or something I don't know. A lot but well, because I feel like this is what we're more passionate about I. Really we have more opinions on the future of our organizations. A little bit more to drink too. Yeah. But. "Guy Needs to be signees a solid third-liner. Potential he was on pace for like twenty three goals. This season needs to resign that he needs to resign that and Travis Green Bench him first game. Ridiculous. Fuck off with that. Don't give me that you know what I mean. And so I guess the last thing I just wanted to a or I. Okay. There's things. Thanks to thanks so. armee connection actually contenders future. His what I put. Yeah. One hundred percent that could be my Vancouver bias come in but I think they are now that was that was the entire first segment. No is just me being like, yeah. They're going to be booking contenders. Of course. I. Mean. Look at it. If they do get an again, knock on wood. A win tonight. They do get me Yes a win tonight and also Hughes Pederson Basser Vat Miller Denko Hughes. These guys can those are all They got big names. This tower has he, but that's how do you sign all that especially with what's existing I? It's it. There's going to be tough decisions and there's going to be people are gonNA walk and there's GonNa be a traits there's going to be traced. They're going have to get some type of a pick for and hopefully the line up picks. So I mean honestly I trade that I saw going around with I. Think it was Was I. think it was Beagle is either or Erickson. Getting traded along with a second round pick. For like beans essentially you know for nothing. That's a captain. You know you need to get rid of that extra four point five million to sign like the pederson chew. Sign. The Miller to sign this to Foley you know you need to sign these guys are integral to the team. And speaking of entire last thing that I want to talk about economics because I know I've rambled on and on and on. Who is more integral to the team? Patterson the senator. I mean I. I was thinking about this in my shower. Before we started this and I still don't know the answer to that in my opinion, look from the outside looking in. The easy answer the cop out answer is go for the you know defense from there the center it's easy to do WanNa fall though in. Games not scoring. So I'm pederson is definitely definitely be. In my opinion looking again on the road. The part I mean, he's he's definitely got to be that cog in the wheel that definitely pushes everything forward. I mean, obviously, you need a strong core under defense. For. So Hughes, definitely isn't going to be like small factor on the team. No I would. I. Would argue that they're probably to I'd honestly that that could even be. I mean. And I was really thinking about my biggest thing was that Pettersen during the game against Minnesota at least yesterday and.

"It's like you know here. We go again type of feeling about the season. I can't imagine that the same decimation of the roster will happen again in two thousand twenty but so far not so good for this team staying healthy and that's that's a major major concern because if you feel like one thing is going to derail this train into getting the world series with the way that the Astros and the Red Sox and dealing with all the stuff with the cheating scandal and so on and so forth that they are the favorites in the American league. I mean they got the. I is win total in baseball by a lot if one thing is going to derail him. It's going to be injuries like this. Well good teams fight through injuries. You know and saw a hockey game last night. It was amazing it was amazing game and I give the islanders a lot of credit. Because they're a team that's dealing with a ton of injuries and they lost one of their key players for a big portion of the game and actually came back out of the locker room to sit in the penalty box for the overtime period. That was J G pershing. Who of course scores against the Rangers? Of course it's a fluke. Goal comes out of nowhere and it Kinda gets back into a game. I don't know how much of the game you watch last night but it was about as intense as any playoff game it. You'll see guys going one hundred miles an hour and when you watch a game days how how are not more people watching this because this is where you get. Your money's worth you get great effort. You get an islander team that basically decimated by injuries you know if they can get all their guys back and get healthy. They're going to be a good team because they're going to play defense versus even though it didn't look like it last night. The Rangers honestly you know gave one away gave a point away. If you ask me you know. They sat around for the last seven or eight minutes of that game like they were cones on the ice. Just watching the islander skating zone and the way it started out. I figured we're GONNA win like five nothing because the islanders were all over the Rangers first ten minutes of game and this kid Alexandre Goria. Was Tony yesterday. You know guys get injured all the time in sports. You just never know when your turn is gonNA come. You never know when you're going to get the opportunity to shine and show you can do. Net kids stopped. I think forty two saves last night. Forty five shots on goal. That's ridiculous. Yeah we'RE NOT GONNA win when your goal is to make that many stops defensible. You gotTA start getting in front of politics. I mean it was unbelievable. Last night he was like a shooting gallery and the other side. They only had twenty eight shots on goal and they got the islanders best effort but I I give. The island has a lot of credit for time. That game late game. Yeah I know what you're GonNa say you're going to be feel bad about blowing the lead and you're up through. I understand but actually think that both teams coming out of this thing can be happy about the way it went because the islanders were on the way to a regulation loss. And we're able to storm back and get a goal with less than a minute left and the Rangers were able to get a point on the islanders hurricanes and continue to chew on the Columbus Columbus Blue Jackets and this is the first game without historic it. So I thought that you'll both of these teams. Once the dust settled se wasn't so bad. We'll we'll find out now. The next three games at Montreal Philadelphia and then home against Alpha and Montreal's always been a tough place for them to play. The Nice thing is is that the Rangers continue to win on the road. This is like a nine on a row nine in a row on the road. Which is a franchise record? This group guys is created a franchise record on the road away from Madison Square Garden. And they don't play many clunkers because they're goaltenders. Young goaltenders in particular are keeping them in games in this attorney temporary or semi preparedness. Just ridiculous how good he is and look. The defense is going to make some mistakes but they're also going to make a lot of plays so it's kind of like a growing situation. I Dunno Brendan. Smith is going to be a number one pair defenseman going forward. He had a really tough first period. I thought but he settled down and you got a nice assist later on the game but I dunno it was just. The islanders are probably. They're missing like four key. Guys Andy. Green went out last night. I don't know how significant that injury was. And then one patio got the game. Misconduct of the ten minute misconduct. Because you know he went after trooper. Who through an eight million dollar check into the chest? Ital- coal which is exactly what I'm paying Jacob Trooper to do every single time. He's gotta be like that. That was a Scott Stevens last night. That's what that was an outlook that was awesome. It was legal in. You know it was nasty and then you know it's almost like you can't hit a guy anymore legally. Somebody's got to come and fight you. That's ridiculous my team does the same thing you know. One of our guys gets hit. We go after somebody immediately. I don't know why well the game you're defending your guy. Sometimes getting your guy that guy's got his head down. Get your head off but you know you know how it goes. You know how fast it is out there. We have the ability to watch this thing and see exactly where the guy's head was. Did he leave his feet in slow mo? Didn't when you're tonight fine but when you're out there on the ice and you see your team may get laid out your natural reactions to defend them. I don't think there's any problem with the other thing to remember. The islanders had a goal pulled off the board because honestly interfered with the one on the Islander Bun. Well what he called it. The referee called it right there. In the moment he saw the whole thing happened. So they're not gonNA overturn that but the point being that honestly as a pain in the ASS. He's a guy that sits in front of the net and just is to move and he is not afraid to stand there. When those one hundred mile an hour pucks coming through the middle so You Know Look I. It was a great game last night. We should have seen it in. Rive really is what should have happened. If you think about a man you should have been there together. But you didn't WanNa go would have been a great victory for your guys. You would have walked out of their head. Held high feeling. Great those weird things I I was. I wanted them the win. The real two points. Not You know not go to an want to go into You know forgave three on three hockey. Which is exciting by the way but would have been nice to come out of there too. Oh as opposed to one but you know. Hey I'll take it. It's a win. And the Rangers are continuing to win and their young players. Great and their stars or playing and Chris Kreider was Under the weather last night didn't look himself. But Hey you know what? We'll find out now here in the next two weeks whether or not they're gonNA make the playoffs because of the teams that they're playing..

"It's a new coach. It's a new system. It's guys but as this team has started to take shape and as this team has started to put itself together like stop it you guys. I'm tired of hearing during the narratives that applied. There's a firsthand game. There's larger flaws in in the team that I think needs to be addressed or at least that are going to allow this team to keep winning and and I think that the consistency that these two have grown to A grown together in general is something that the kings are are extremely comfortable with in terms of seeing that. They're paired together every single night. Since almost the start of the season so I agree. I think that these these guys are solid in each other's that belong to play fifteen minutes a night and you know as of right now. There's no reason that they should be in the lineup. And they shouldn't be getting the ice time that they are the only the only thing that I would argue and I I'm with you one hundred percent on this the only thing I would say no. It's not an argument. They're not they're not playing against the top line not matched up against the mcdavid. Typically in playboy hair used to have Christian air off on the right right yes the day. That's a great point because sometimes it does go without noting that you're not every line is going up against the top line right posing team especially when you're at home when you're playing against the third or fourth line. You're not seeing the scoring chances from from those lines that you would be if you're playing if you're doughty in your Hutton or your doubt in your walker playing against mcdavid well let's let's take take an absurd comparison. Let's take two thousand twelve Stanley Cup. La Kings roster right okay Brad. Richardson Jordan Nolan frazier whose first name escapes me. All in thank you calling Frazier Matt Green and Alec Martinez. Those guys were fourth line slash third pair. Our dear right now. He didn't play against the other teams. Tom nope fair but every shift they were out there they were taking to the other team. They weren't a liability. They weren't getting getting Hamden in there. They were attacking they were. They were making stuff happen. Even if Matt Green only got one goal you know in the playoffs and it was a big big. Yeah but the point is like you know I said this. I can't even remember when I said it but Kris draper has more Stanley Cup rings than than Steve Is. Okay I like I like Christopher too and I'm not saying I'm not GonNa sit here and tell you the Kris draper is better than Steve Is. And I'm not going to tell you that if I was in a draft I would take Kris draper over. Steve is Herman woman. I'm just saying you need Christopher just as much as you need divisor man. It's just harder to find Steve. So a layoff of Roy and Ryan agree. Read what needs to be addressed that they aren't playing against you know the top line of every team but neither is any other third paired to fry correct so yeah they're extremely important but just as you're talking about Jesse is they're winning when they're on the ice and plus or minus at the top of you know 'cause you're looking at fancy antsy stats but what's important is. They're doing what they're asked. And when you can get an occasional goal out of Roy or Ryan by all means and I don't think anyone's going to be opposed Roy was plus tonight by the way Yes Ryan was even. Yeah which we were trying to sort that out early out as one on the Is Together at all times so I think that you know this offense. If it can be helped by the defense in terms of defencemen scoring you know it just makes this team a little bit more competitive in a little bit better in a little bit harder to be and now you're going to need those two guys with Alec Martinez Martinez Out of the lineup for however no you know who knows how long McDermott. McDermott Zanan forever coming back now. So you know there are there are going to be some changes ages. But you need guys like that to step up and it's good to see from those two guys dance your question Jack for the Season Matt Roy Even at plus minus and Yoga Ryan minus one I take take it absolutely and again. I'm not proposing that these guys are norris trophy winners or they'll even be when the team does reach convention. I'm just saying like the Trevor Lewis the Ryans. They're fine now ev. Honestly they're fine fine. Yeah everybody everybody on this team for the last. What two weeks has been great greats maybe too strong and have been fine solid? Yeah have been you know. Look Captain Happiness as measured by expectations right. My expectations expectations are being raised as a result of the play on the ice. And honestly they're not I'm not. I don't feel let down as a result of my I slightly elevated expectations. I still don't think they're gonNA make the playoffs this year. But we've gone more than three points. Yes well I think they're on pace for seventy one at this point or seventy two. which is what happens what we thought? Well it's it's I mean not that Vegas is beyond but it's where the over under was short for the team this season and my response to that was when I first heard it before. A lot of the things that happen happen mirus wants was that's absurd. It has to be higher than that. They can't be worse than they were last year. And have you remove the first five to ten games of the season. They have been better. Kobe played almost five hundred hockey coping. I think it's more than five hundred. Qatar has been a one hundred percent. The player we wanted him to be back. Quick has bounced back off. Carter's been great. Jeff Carter scoring tyler. Toffoli look like a completely different player tonight on our the family in the stands or what Flying up the wing campaign looks great. Lozad is who who knew made on the campaign marker who get to that a second uh-huh Andrew Doughty is on pace. I think if I'm not mistaken for his best season two years after the previous seventeen points coming into the game sounds right So I mean I look. It's Thanksgiving you know. My mood has rebounded significantly from where it was the unites. Thank goodness well three points and three three out of four points. Yeah I expect the rest of the season to be a slow climb out out of the basement into the black hole and I'm fine with it whereas the black hole between what is it between like eight and eleven or you're you're not good enough to make the playoffs but you're not bad enough the worst place. Yeah the pro- the problem. I only problem with that phrase and I just use it for expediency my problem with that raises that it was coined to reference eighteen. Does that every year. Like cowdery did for EDMUNDS and did for every year you know are sorry. Minnesota know where the Carolina we use the play offs and losers or Florida. Where you just get close and and so you never can get out of that cycle? And that's why it was called the black because it keeps sucking you in mere if the king's like the Kings when they were allegedly in it however many years ago they had two or three terrible years and then the climbed out right. But you have to have that that transition season where you finish eleventh or you know Panther Eleventh and and if the kings finish how many teams in our conference fifteen sixteen extent fifteen all right if the kings finish nine eleven three art great. I'm fine with it. We're GONNA re transformation information or whatever transformation. I'm not sure with coin term. We're using it but it's a matter of you know last refinish thirty out of thirty. You want your next year. There's a lot of expectation and there's a lot of youth that we at least hope to see in the NHL or at least in a king slash rain uniform. So I think it's a matter of figuring out you know who some of these players are going to be in the future and how many of them are on this right now beyond your copay tar is beyond your Jonathan Jonathan quicks beyond your drew doughty's and understanding. You know where you need to fill the holes I think you're seeing Lozad and Sean Walker and Adrian Kempe a slowly starting to come into their own air. Okay all of a sudden we can check this box off and now we need to look for someone who can do this. And whether that be through free agency or trades or you know draft picks that you have in your prospects that's what this whole seasons about and we're learning more and more every game but you know while we're seeing what we do need were also realizing what we don't need and I think to your point right now a third depayre something. We don't need eight. I think that's fair. I'm just looking adding just quietly. Why just look at the standings and realizing thing that they're further back than I thought they were? Maybe eleventh is a little bit ambitious but the point is I expect complaints better hockey league so there you go. Yeah trending upward. Yes can't train window precisely I but I think Jack that phrase what you finding out what you don't need is secret is is quietly lightly. Brilliant because we have discovered brilliant an asset that we don't we don't need this seizing scarlet. Yeah and you know. We don't need to dwell well on it but there have been lineup. Changes made and the team has been all the better for it and keep this in mind. Don't Oh forget what's in Ontario Right. Oh with Kale Clegg and Mikeandmike on their doors but these guys are velarde. These guys are going to be good players and we hope they're gonNA hope and there's and there's and there's a guy named Alex Turcott who's going to be coming up in the next couple years and there's an Arthur Calia and there's all these guys is that are making bjorn. Foot is still playing in Ontario. So there there are guys there who are ready to take these roles will ready over the next couple of years. I'm not concerned learned about it at all. No next couple of years are going to be a lot of fun to watch. Yes absolutely absolutely less on Walker. My he's a new car clifford and his head. My affection for the Professional Hockey Writers Association as well documented and I I was in the media room earlier today and my mood had not yet become had broken. Yeah from Abbey early. Yeah I didn't want to see him. Barry no no I was You you walk into the end of this conversation It was not your fault and a member of the professional aggressors Asian and I were sharing table and he said something along the lines of like boy that Sean Walker what a surprise And like is not this guy's fault but you couldn't. "He was these European defenseman Christian air. Hof Thank you Christian Erhan Program. Yes he had great fancy stats and my my God. If that guy wasn't on the ice for every single yeah but anyway but in the last fifteen games right this is fifteen games and breaking down Defensive Defensive Bears Roy and Ryan have played ninety seven minutes and thirty seven sixty seconds at even strength. That's second only dowdy and Walker. As a pair there I in Coursey four percentage which means that they dominate that. When they're on the ice the PUCK spins way more time being directed at the opponent's than it does at their own net shots four percentage there? I and that's never mind Coursey. That's just shots on goal. That's pucks that hit the goalies right. More pucks percentage when they're on the ice and they've only been on the ice for three even strength goals against meanwhile Alec Alec Martinez Abundant Hutton. have been on for six Audi and hunting have been on for five doubting Walker been on for five. Now I get it. They don't play as many minutes but even strength wise the top four. I mean they play the those two guys play about fifteen minutes a night and over fifteen games. Fifteen games pair defense and and I'm perfectly prepared to throw out the first game of the season. They look they was weird scheduling. There were those two back to backs. They opened the road. It's a new coach. It's a new system. It's guys but as this team has started to take shape and as this team has started to put itself together like stop.

"There are those and and I realize I'm I'm speaking to a small percentage a small but vocal minority but there are those who are remain openly antagonistic to certain players players on this team. And I don't get it like Trevor Lewis step back into the lineup tonight. And did he like the world on fire. No did not score a Hattrick no he did not but was his is line dominating possession every second he was out there. Yeah did they give up any agreed Scoring chances against no. Do they give any you know. Oh terrible goals no like he played. Trevor Lewis Yeah Trevor. Lewis is a good hockey player. And and everybody you know for those who say like well I can't wait for them to trade trade Clifford Ann Lewis at the trade deadline team out there. That will need guys like that. I go right. Every team needs ratings if they were the the bombs that you report them to be there wouldn't be trade market for them like the. He took a line. That for lack of a better word. Got Destroyed last game and and completely neutralized it and quietly had that line. A you know a good night a night that you know as you just described Jesse controlled their own play and gave up no scoring opportunities so I think it not only as you brought up that if they have a market for him. He's extremely valuable to this team. And I think he's even more valuable to this locker room. That brings us to to to Ryan and Roy Moore third pair. So they're never gonNA be drew doughty at the peak of drew down. They had a rough. I'm not even sure if they played together as a pair in the first or games. I don't think they did matt. Roy had a rough first three games of the season. And I referenced this on twitter I said I think the narrative would be different. If those games had been played at home and the reason I say that is because Matt Roy was the first goal of the season that went off his skates Geico mcdavid and then end and then he was the guy who got beat outside late in that game on the you know it's like he got a spotlight shone on him early early in the season on the road. When there wasn't a single kings fan who wasn't watching the game will not? Maybe there were a handful but the vast majority of us the tens of thousands of us there were watching coaching on. TV saw those goals replayed over and over and over again and heard that the broadcasters talking about what a stroke you know the other young unwelcome Blah Blah after those three Games Ryan. Roy's fine like he's fine you guys. He's fine he's not he's not drew. Doughty yes there. You know a team that is struggling to get out of the basement of the standings but he and Ryan are not like people talk about often as if they are the worst defensemen to ever put on kings not bad. There's all at all and you could see a little offensive flair and Roy's game tonight. He had the goal but you can see him getting pucks through and he gets on the net. I like his game. I liked Matt. I've always use what those opportunities to play the game. I believe that he is right playing. Yeah I I think you know when he came into the NHL or at least to start this season you know as you talked about. Jesse a wasn't a pretty start. But he's slowly coming into his his own skates and I think it's gotten to the point where he knows when he can step up in. He knows when he's going to be opportunistic. Opposed to you being forced to or having to just play a game that maybe it wasn't asked to early on so I think he's gotten to the point. Where you're you're seeing a Matt Roy who is comfortable with the role? He's being asked to play but he's also a little bit better understood in terms of his his pros cons so I think his pros like his writing style and I was very confused. Year old uh-huh see now you got me. Sorry the pros in his games and the cons and his games are better. Well Understood stood among the coaching staff. And I think it's being utilized a lot better not to say that it was poorly used but I think the more you see him play the more you see a regular shift out of of him. The more you're going to see guy us a little bit more of that offensive. You know side to his game and I think the the chemistry itself is is slowly working its way out for a solid third deeper. I don't WanNa do I don't want to rely on fancy stats. I'm I will be the first one to point out out that Oh shoot Jay helped me out. He was these European defenseman Christian air. "Sleep the phone this week and if I could have counted the number of hockey cliches that I got out of him which is no disrespect to Andrews lead. That is how a captain of the New York. Islanders islander should speak but it was a tough one. Yeah no it's. It's all about commitment and Harvard in all of the things that you know and probably I would say it is very trust. Money becomes an iron. That might be all almost. It's August the Lua fact or Brennan. One of the reasons we wanted to have you on. Chris wrote such terrific piece for. ESPN DOT com this week about the next wave of young broadcasters in a league and you were among them and I love to know I'm guessing this is something you've wanted to your entire life but what would you say. Is Your big break for how you got to this stage at such a young age homeboy All of them you know it's it's to get to this level period. Let alone when I get into the thirty. Two Takes takes a lot of Stars aligning to have that happen but You know I was born into. The broad guy was born into the sports sports media world. My Dad's a sports writer so I grew up on that side of it So I've had a relationship with broadcasters my whole life and have one nine years old but I lucked out getting any job at the H. L. With a wheeling mailers right out of college because I had said my take them when the job wasn't open and their broadcast left last minute and they decided to hire me instead of going on this you know nationwide search for the next broadcaster. So that got me started at twenty two in double a hockey. which was you know I think A step ahead of a lot of people that age and then it just kind of worked out for me where when I was in Peoria and the H. L. I got an opportunity to fill in on some. NHL Games the Saint Louis Blues. And so here I am at twenty six two years old In the American Hockey League with a tape of some NHL action. And so that kind of put me ahead of the curve a little bit for a lot of different things and I wound up getting picked up doing in college football for Fox and then when the islanders job cable but I had a hockey radio eight football. TV tape and asked them to use their imagination. That I could do this and put it together. The other and they let me on dishes job in hearing him so A lot of different breaks along the way. But that's gotTa cliffnote of it. I mean Brennan. It's we talked a bit about the the the young journeyman is kind of what I labeled you as because you did have to kind of a ten year career in the minors but one of the things that really stands out to me about about you and it really stood out after the piece was out was how much islander fans seem to really love you. I mean that my my mentions were absolutely absolutely blown up with islanders fan saying how much they appreciate you and the fact that you had to replace. Howie rose a guy that you knew who and obviously had such a great connection with the fans? It seems like the transition has been relatively seamless. I mean what is it. been like for you to kind of form in that relationship with the fans and then also You know the fact that how he was a guy that gave you some really good advice right when you started out running the voice. You're referring into hell. He called me right before my first game said you know. Don't act like you're filling in for anybody this is your job and so that Kinda changed my mindset of how do I was GONNA attack this job but I think thank you know a couple of things. A couple of factors led into my friend. Steve was was I guess willing to when maybe a lot of other networks teams Warren. Based on the Times I've heard no financial jobs were was to give the job to somebody that no one's ever heard of before because it's such a good job and it's an NHL but it's a uh-huh market and they hired AHL radio guy so nobody really had any preconceived notions of me. I didn't have any ties to any other teams. I didn't these have any other body of work that people knew about so I think when I got hired the response was who so instead of. Oh my God I don't like him. It was all right. Let's see they gave this kid the job. We'll see what he can do. I think we do have an open mind to become the game And then I guess they took to the way I call them redeem. It's very different. From what how he did You know I'm more of Radio Guy when I phoned the talking and called the action at how he was a gifted storyteller. I learned a lot of other things but I game differently but him and so I don't know if it was after twenty years of keeping you know like the change At at least in terms of that regard but people seem to really take me pretty really. I spent a lot of time on twitter and with the fans trying to learn about them and who they are and what they've been through so that I could really become in our highlander and I worked really hard at it and I feel now that I finally moved out Long Island. I think I've got it all figured out so I just starting to feel like I'm a true Royal Fan and one of the things I love about. Broadcasters is seeing their process behind the scenes All the different pens at Barker as they used to write their notes so that they can get ready tells a little bit about your game. Prep yes why can't read my own handwriting is. That's a problem so yeah yeah so. I actually travel with a printer. I have a printer in my suitcase on every road trip and I have a lot of times having the press box with Lee because my notes on my short has to be printed out. I developed a format on a on yourself publisher that I have tweaked in tweaked over over the past twelve years and got it to a point of fourteen years. She's been doing this. You know differently every year but pretty much the same anything and I've got a a system where I've got a box for every player and I've got a lot of information I type up my notes and you know sometimes I hate to admit this but sometimes during the national actually we've every game because The way I I literally prep until every time I really ever seen like I'm done where I'm like all right. It's four o'clock let me just sit back and have food and get ready for the seven o'clock game. I pretty much every minute. I have my notes at the last second and go to work so it's an ever evolving process for me but it's A. It's a fun that I tell young broadcasters. If you don't like getting ready for a game game then you're not going to be a good broadcast because that's that's the type of your everybody can turn on the microphone at seven o'clock into the job but do you enjoy doing it the rest of your life because that's pretty much what it takes to be good at this and I do. I enjoy the process and you know I think it really pays off and it shows and in one of the things that that you know people more. NHL Fans are going to get more familiar with you because you have had the opportunity to to do national games. So I just wonder you know how. Whoa how difficult is that transition to make your with a team all year and you're trying to kind of nail everything down for that but then you know you you parachute in recently for a Ranger's game which I'm sure islanders fans got a little nervous about maybe but but yeah you know you had that opportunity to do national games as well? So how does that that transition. How does that go? How difficult is that and ultimately how does it come together in that on the broadcast? Don't tell islander fans up during another ranger actually to it. It's interesting you know what the national and regional game is that majority of your audience from national doesn't need the detail when they're watching the eighty two year and so it's almost easier to Paris. Terraced infranational Dean. Because you'll have to give the appropriate snuff. You might get detailed stories but you know doing a razor game and telling the fact the copy cocktails but number two overall pick is not breaking news ranger fans but some people that watch the national team's Mike Forget that's who that is so you don't Google the little things that are local days takes for granted and goes wise. Talking about the national fan base. Wants to hear that type of thing so you have to make sure you have all the big stories down. You don't really have too much into detail I mean you can And the analysts really do but for me. It's just making sure that I have all the nuts and bolts on everything Because as you don't really have to dive deep especially if the beams go to the game you know I'm always a guy that The Games always the story. So I'm not going in with a checklist of different topics and I feel like I need to get in if they get in they get in the game's going well and people are involved in the game. Let's just talk about the game because that's what the people are here watching so Do Arrange your game or do a game in the metropolitan evasion or Eastern Conference is a lot easier for me because I see all the time. The real challenge is Not last year but the previous two seasons I I done you know. Most of the Games in Eastern Conference. And then they'd send me on a Pacific Division playoff series between San San Jose and Edmonton for instance Two teams that I had only seen twice each and hadn't seen at all since I think it was November and now I'm jumping into a playoff off series. So just the amount of work to get ready for a series like that because they're not on your everyday radar Is a lot more but then once you get through game on then all all of a sudden you're doing the same two teams four or five six games role and then it becomes a little bit easier. And then it's the playoffs in the stories are just the playoffs so but it's a lot of work to get up to speed for one of those Western Conference Games like that but it's always when I love the challenge of it. Hey Brennan were so appreciative of your time. Before we let you go one quick header for you. Give me one bowl prediction your round this team every day. You see them in and out one bold prediction for the rest of the islanders season. Oh Boy Take you know what. Yeah how how. `Bout I'M NOT GONNA say another Jennings Trophy but how about the islands finished top five and goals allow again You know everybody wanted to say that it was wrong. Robin Leonard for some reason and and trust me Robbins. A great guy and he had a great season. People often forget the goalie split last season for the New York. Islanders was forty three starts Robin Robin winner and thirty nine starts Thomas Rice You know people forget the other half of that. Goalie tandem is still there. And if the goalie coaches that turned around Robin Leonard's career career are still on the island so Varlamov off to a great star comments crisis picked up where he left off. And I think the honors will be challenging again for Jennings Trophy Come the end every year because I don't see any reason why that would change awesome. Thank you Brennan for your time. We appreciate it. How can people follow your work? Brendan embark on twitter or force. An Club Yeah we're both emily. I'm Kathleen and Chris. Peters Yeah I got Matt Matthew represented I don't know who who has actual Brendan Burke. I think it was a comedian in Ireland but either way I had to go with Brennan Emberg so we'll deal with that..

"I do have to give a shout out to the one player who gave one of my favorite responses. I WANNA pull it up right now. You said what's the worse. What's the most dreaded road trip? And obviously the all the guys say Winnipeg and he goes people said Winnipeg right. I'm sure they all said that. Look there's stuff to do there. We're close casino if you WANNA go a half hour wherever you can do that that wherever you go they've TSN on. I can't get that here on my redacted. US based so winnipeg they have TSN. They should use that and all they're tourism ads. Absolutely get get your Bob McKenzie. Right here in Winnipeg the this the only the only place on the road you you American team players but yeah you know I. I also thought Ebola was really telling that a lot of the guys. You know the one of the questions that I was most interested in seeing the answers to was was the recreational drugs question and and you know. I'm so glad that you ask that. Because you know it's something that we've heard from NHL executives about but it's not something we've heard a lot from players and it seems like they kind of downplayed completed a little bit. Yeah they did and you know especially when it look the recreational drug questions interesting right because they test for marijuana and coke but they don't punish for for it and that was one of the things I wanted to get into with guys and guys down the line pretty much the same response. They're like look. I think one of those job drugs is probably a little bit better than the other we look at the legality of it. The laws are changing to make marijuana. Essentially what drinking was for us when we were growing up so I don't think that that should be punished. And look as long as it's not affecting your performance guys to do whatever want professional athletes you know what's good for our body when it came to the NHL. Have a coke problem. I think the answer is we're really intriguing for people. Look you have to wonder how really unvarnished these guys answers are how truthful they want to be they are inside themselves like you know I think sometimes and they might not know exactly what the truth is but like down the line. Most guys response were. Well I've never been on a team where there's a coke problem. I've heard stories of other guys doing. And maybe maybe they do it in the summer. But I've never seen it. Yeah well you gotta you gotTa protect your own right so I think I think that that's that was the dow is to be expected. But but I think it's good that there were some guys that were willing to talk about it and I. I really do think that the marijuana issue or or lack thereof or just as things continue to change behaviors and ideas and and and just everything tied to the marijuana question chain. It's all changing right now. So I think that that's going to be something that the League is is going to have to take a bigger look at just in terms. Of How much does this help players and there are guys that certainly. I think that you know we talk about things like anxiety. Pain pain relief. Things that of those those kind of things that can be benefits. You know maybe there is something to that and as more more states legalize it. I'm sure that's a conversation. League is going to have more closely with their medical personnel. And and obviously the trainers and the players themselves I'm GonNa highlight that might actually three favorite quotes. Just before we move on one was my question. Would I wanNA listen to this podcast. Now it's one of the hell. They want to die on his players going got marketing themselves and I asked guys. Would you feel comfortable appearing in a big national ad campaign for Gatorade or Nike or is that too much attention. She has a hockey player. And like actually have like three of these responses which I sent to the woman who's in charge of the body issues like yeah. We'll do that but I wouldn't do. The body issue that's too much The question on on their gritty fatigue. Those are pretty good answers a lot of guys who said they found it hilarious and they thought it was good for the League. It's it's getting out there. But this one is flagged by our friend. Katie straying she she DMV and said. She thought this was hilarious. Look into this players likey. I thought it would wear out by now. I guess I don't really mind him like he's not affecting me. It's just a lot which is pretty amazing if you think about it and then The other one that seems to be getting flagged on twitter as pretty hilarious is do you have a burner twitter account around to the guy who said I've never logged onto twitter in my life. Please revealing hope. Please daggers off on twitter. It's pretty clear you probably have. You also good good advice. I think to anybody but yeah but hey we we love we love you twitter. Sorry we love you but yeah that was that was also my favorite answer whether it was truthful or not and I think that that is like I said it's good advice. I mean who needs that. Well Anchorage check out the story. The our team did an incredible job. Illustrating there is the pictures do not depict who's actually interviewed in the column. They're just illustrations but an incredible IMO. PK Sue ban in what looks to be Winnipeg or buffalo drinking coffee with his FIDORA. There's Connor mcdavid getting freaked out by a smelly something in a locker room and it's good stuff so thank you to everyone including Amy Crawford the editor who helped me put that together. I'm really pleased with our turned out and now Chris it is time for a guest guy that you wrote about this week for. ESPN DOT com the islanders broadcaster for MSG. It's Brendan Burke and now joining us as I said is Brendan Burke of MSG and and Brendan. We have to start with this. The islanders have won nine games in a row. Are you surprised I can. I say yes I have I have to say I mean no one. No one expects anybody with nine games at a row. I don't think that I was probably as pessimistic is. Most of the media was coming into the season about what theon would do this year But I think especially with the way team started with one and three start And really within this ninety winning streak probably in the I five of them they were out played in four of them but they found a way to win so it's been surprising. Stretch for them to string together but the scary thing is is. They've gotten better. We're at the nine games have gone along. So we'll see where they and Brennan seem like last year. They had a chip on their shoulder. A bit and you know maybe does that's still exist a little bit because it seems like there's they still weren't getting the respect. As you mentioned there was a lot of pessimism around them but I mean is there a chip on the shoulder element this year as well. Yeah I think so I think last year all of a sudden they pick up one hundred and five points they finished fifth best record and beginning shell that everyone goes but they didn't pick up anybody during in the offseason so they probably can't do it again I I. It's it's amazing that it's the same story despite the fact that the team and proves everybody around the last year but You know they didn't make a big splash. Market their biggest free agent signings were Semyon Varlamov in Derek sort and so people were will writing them off again then you know all Woah models and taking them for anywhere from seventy eight to eighty five point. Thirteen hundred three years ago and didn't really lose anybody. I think that that's something that those I personally Brendan. We talked to in the beginning of this show about the kids making an impact in the NHL in some of the new things that are happening around. The islanders is that they've got Oliver Wallstrom. and Noah would dobson sticking around now knows kind of struggling to get into the regular rotation and Oliver's in there and hasn't had points what do you think the plan for them as are going to see them stick around all season he's in and how are they going to incorporate them. I think Wall Street is not because of the injuries. Are they driven into reopen the door. For All of the Wallstrom they gave it sense to be a top six player and it didn't quite work right away and so he's moved into kind of a fourth line which is probably not where he's protected long-term so he he's studying up to play in the NHL. Give him seven to ten minutes night But they're not putting in in the all day anticipated being and so I think when bodies get healthy that always wants from his back in bridgeport. That was the original. There's no plan out of camp and I think they would like to see him. Spend the majority of the season getting better at the American auto level for no adults and he's interested in nineteen he can't go to bridgeport so the only option is to send it back to two years. I know there is some concern about how he's using juniors because he's such a player one back to back memorial cups. You're talking about got a kid. They're playing close to forty minutes night down in the Quebec major junior leagues. So they don't WanNa do that so I think they're stuck. They don't want him in juniors. They don't really WanNa be h align every night so I could see them nucleus nine games until Christmas and then sending him to volunteers and then sending them back I could see them keeping him on the NHL Roster proclaims uh-huh radically little season. They're just trying to get bigger and stronger and ready for next year and they're trying to figure out what the best way to do. That is in Brennan. You know this is a kind of a dance. The Berry Trots has to do as the coach. And it's one of those things that he didn't necessarily have to deal with this year. But but aside from that you know what's it been like for you to kind of work with Berry very trots. Learn from Berry Trots. I mean you know. The broadcaster relationship with with the coach can often be different than than other other entities in the media. So just wondering kind of what's your your. Been Your experience. Obviously he's such a huge part of that organisation. The the resurgence and or just the the ability to stay consistent despite the losses of players. And so I I guess what's it been like being around him. And what are some of the things that that really stand out to you about Barry Trots yeah He's been he's been great. He's been everything that everybody in Nashville and everybody in Washington DC. Not because when you get buried everybody comes out and says you're going to love And you do. He's such a smart hockey mind and he's very open You talk about their relationship the broadcast or a Lotta Times. Everybody watches the press conference where everybody watches the morning. Skate scrum where everybody's crowded around him and then after that you know he'll step aside and he'll talk doc butch and I am Chris King and You know Kinda give us a little more insight things that he probably wouldn't say on Kanter but give us more information though they were equipped with And so we can understand Dan. What's going on in the game? A little bit better. So He's been very great with that very open with us and You know he's been a guy that has taught the team so much and it's been fun to see the evolution of the players and even the way they answer questions based on. He's they sound more and more like Berry every day. So you get that consistent get messaging from the players and it just kind of shows that they're getting the Consistent Messaging for the coaching staff And it's now ingrained in them and so they all start to answer questions the same way they all start to say the same things that It's all stemming from a very good place in Berry drops taking over and his entire staff really have been great for the team and have been great to work with printed red and making a test that I talked to Andrew..

"I'm not I'm sitting in for Greg. This is Chris Peters on the evening news. I don't know what that was. Why did I do that? I don't know I think it's because you're in Saint John Right now and you're feeling Kinda frisky tells about Saint John Yes so Saint John is in New Brunswick this is my first time in New Brunswick runs with. It's a beautiful place. We're in the Atlantic timezone. I don't like that because everything is later here and I don't I don't like that but you know what it is a beautiful place. It's it's right on the water. Good seafood and good hockey. So can't Koran. I love it I love Kick Greg out to you and we have a total mid West timezone bias. Let's go central time zone. I love that time zone. We'll we've got a great show for you today. We've got Brendan Burke the broadcaster for the islanders. MSG joining us. He'll talk all things. The nine game winning streak islanders plus the next wave of NHL broadcasting. I'm going to pick Chris his brain because he's an expert on which rookies are making the biggest impact in the NHL a little early prospect aspect. Talk plus some dig into my big player confidential that ran this week and a new segment debut in for this week. So let's there's no proper shall we whom he is to your ear buds a podcast about hockey featuring things to do with arche from your friends at ESPN ESPN on ice with Shitski. And Kaplan welcome to yes piano is I'm in the national. NHL Reporter and my Speech speech impediment from Middle School and Elementary School. where I couldn't say my ours seems to be coming out? Let's start the show proper. Shall we and adjoining today. Who are Chris? Peters Steph writer recovering the NHL NHL draft prospects You know all those things awesome. Well I'm so glad to have Chris join me. He is truly a delight he is. The only is the best fact about Chris. He's the only NHL writer living in the state of Iowa. Isn't that correct. As far as I know I think I'm the only what if there is one. We gotTA start having meetings but yeah this is a yeah yeah man about town in originally from Chicago so I know I know a bit about where you're at right now but but yeah I I live in Iowa and that seems to Shock people every time I tell them I love it. All right crispell your expertise. This is always the draft class. And you've been following these guys. Probably since they were fifteen years old maybe younger in some cases and now that this twenty nineteen in classes starting to make an impact in the NHL. I just wanted to get your thoughts. I say like maybe an early calder. Rankings what you think Cocco and Hughes look like we've got a lot to get to so let's start with the first two big guys. What is your impressions? been early of Jack Hughes with the devils and Capo cocktail with the rangers. Yeah well you know I think I think it's a good reminder. The the way that they both started is the. NHL is a tough leak and these guys are still very young in both guys. Were two thousand one birth earth date so there there are among the youngest players in the National Hockey League and as we saw Jack us there was a lot of complaining about his lack of scoring but in in his last four games four of his last five games. He's got seven points and he's starting to find his way and most of them have been on the power play that's typical. You're going to start to see that where we're players players just going to have a little bit more time space than they're going to have a little bit more success but I think what I've seen from Hughes's that he's continually improved and that's been the most important thing. I think. The thing thing that John Heinz is going to like the most and what what fans should be paying most attention to not necessarily the points that they're having just are they getting better each day and I think that's what Jack uses doing now. Kakaako has had a bit of a tougher tougher road I think both of these teams have kind of underachieved in terms of what the expectations were coming in. But it's another reminder that when you have young teams like these are going to be situations where you're just not going to have the success and and you have to be more patient Cocco history goals. I'm mutiny in those have been some some nice goals had a really good one the other night and what a nice I mean. He's he's a good player. What a nice goal? Yeah and while a nice goal and he. He's he's a really he's a guy that I think just will continue to get better. I was really concerned. I saw that. He said he was not having fun. It was really hard hard. I you know that that transition is not easy. It's not easy in that medium market and it's it's not easy playing for big franchise light. AH THE NEW YORK Rangers but we're starting to see him get more comfortable. We're starting to see that Rangers team I think as well guys like Adam Fox You know younger guys on that team. They're starting to get more comfortable in in. That is going to only help. So Patients Rangers fans patients devils fans. This is only the beginning and these guys are just GonNa continue to build. Yeah so we've entered now the second month of the year and it feels like the early hype on the call there Victor Olson might be cooling off his he's he's stagnated now at six goals Honestly to me this feels like the year. We're finally getting defenseman. It's GONNA come down and in right now. The two leaders for me would be CALMA car. Who has eleven points? It is averaging nearly nineteen minutes. A game shouldering a big workload for the cow Colorado avalanche or Quin Hughes. Jack's brother or who also has ten points nine assists and his having nineteen twenty game and and really the big part of that offensive. Success with Vancouver conducts are seeing what to say. I totally agree you know. I did my prospect rookie. Rankings last weekend at this early stage of the season you know it's going to be fluid. Kale Macara was number one for me when he was number three Hughes's sliding up to number two all of sin is really cooled off and most of his production has been on the power play. The same is true for Quin Hughes. He's power play weapon. That's kind of what we knew he would be early on. But the fact that Travis Green had him on the second power play unit I and then moves them up to the first power play unit and everything starts clicking. It's just because Quinn Hughes is an an incredible talent when it comes to skating. Obviously he's out with an injury right now it's day to day. Situation doesn't look too serious but he's a guy that generates so much with his feet and you watch him skate. There are very few guys in the NHL that skate like him that uses edges and the way that he can open up hips and open up ice. That's pretty incredible. And so that's been awesome nece- and then Kahlil Macara. He's had those those kind of inconsistencies that you would expect from any rookie but a lot of people thought that he would just breeze by that because of how good. He was in the playoffs last year. Not the case is this year. It's there bumps in the road but he's still producing. He's still faster than a lot of guys in this league. It's amazing to watch them skate. And Open ICE And I think those two guys are certainly the front runners. But we've got a long way to go. There's a lot that can happen. There are obviously guys that can that can kind of come up. And we've we've seen older players like Elliott for for for the Toronto. Maple leafs your your boy. The superman the soup boy way boy. Oh boy yeah. He'll he'll eventually the graduate to suit man but he is. He is an incredible. You know incredibly important for the Toronto Maple leafs. Because he's he gives them to give uh extra scoring I do. I think he'll win. The caller probably not. I think the fact that he's twenty five the fact that he's got so many years of experience voters probably won't go that way but he's a guy that I think warrants attention just because of how much meant to a maple leafs team that that needs middle of the lineup scoring let needs players to be contributing on entry level contracts is really what you mean one last thing I want to touch on for you before we switch gears and this team that starting to let the kids play one is. The islanders isn't will hold off on that because we're going to have Brandenburg. But they do have no adopts in Oliver Wallstrom in the lineup. Even though they're getting liberals especially Dobson but a team you and I follow pretty it closed. The Chicago Blackhawks is turning to the kids. Not only is Kirby doc sticking around Adam vocalists. They called up which was pretty shocking to some people. What do you think this all means? I think it means that that the blackhawks are no that they have a lotta holes in that these guys are just about ready to fill them now. I think if you're an NHL. Tim You don't WanNa make need need based decisions on your prospects. You don't WanNa be in that position that's the position the blackhawks are right now. Kirby DOC has three points in eight games so so far atom. Boca scored a goal in the second game in absolute wiring shot. I mean it was a beautiful shot and showed his skill but these are two guys that still have a lot to learn Kirby doc did not dominate the whol on a consistent basis last year. He missed training camp You know with with the concussion from rookie the rookie tournament. So I think they're going to be a a lot of growing pains for him but he's looked very comfortable. They have them on the power play. They're giving them opportunities that's the most important thing he didn't exactly like the H.. On fiery scored his first. Ahl Goal scored his first NHL goal and that was his first H. I'll point so I mean the fact that the blackhawks are willing to get these they need players to push. Is there veterans and. I think that that's kind of what we're seeing with. These two guys right now and and and also Alexander who had been there from the start of the season I I think he's playing ahead of where I thought he would. But the blackhawks are in a situation. It's it's need-based and it's not always the best situation. But if the kids can can prove that they can hang then then then you're you're you're feeling all right but I think that this is a situation. The blackhawks have to monitor really closely because focus and two of the most important players in the entire organization right now oh and you cannot get that wrong because they are going to be. The future of that team protect the organization at all costs. That's the hockey motto. All right we're going to switch gears like okay said in a pretty dramatic way a product. I've been working on for couple. I couldn't even say months now. It's been weeks but months is. NHL Player confidential dropped on ESPN DOT COM on Tuesday. I was super pumped about it because as I do I just ask players all the ridiculous questions that I'd like to ask them like which team has the worst visiting locker room do you ever burner twitter account does the NHL have a cocaine problem. Do you have gritty fatigue not to put you on the spot but I'm curious if he saw it and if there's is that anything that stuck out to you I saw it all right. Yeah I mean this is this is GonNa be you lighten up on the Internet and I I love it I think. Certainly Poor Winnipeg I. I think that's one takeaway. Sorry Winnipeg on isn't cardinal rule of the NHL reporting number. One is that if there's a bunch of jokes it's typically Winnipeg..

"It's on the table that you know, that the honor is going to be on the come and the Rangers have to match that and the Rangers. I thought matched it early. But they didn't sustain it. And the islanders got to go on. And the building starts to swing and the momentum just got to be too much for the Rangers to be able to handle. And it's strange. Oh, six and one in Brooklyn now, h straight games against the outer out his walked into the garden last year and beat up on the ranger. So it's not just Brooklyn. It's overall they're gonna play on Wednesday the day before thanksgiving, and I'm sure the Allender will have the same chip on their shoulder. Even when the islanders are good. Even when the Allders are better than the Rangers. Which might be the case right now, all the attention, all the talk all the focus ends up being on the blue shirts, and it probably ticks them off to no end and good job out of the. Islanders for responding to that James is I Don love your show. You gotta say big win by the islanders to tonight and a Big Hat trick for Beauvilliers devils also played well and God the w what a devastating loss for the Rangers. You can't win and Brooklyn will they ever recover. Of course, they'll recover they'll eventually figure it out. N Y y are MD. That's New York are MD says haggling had zero power play goals with the Rangers in the playoffs. That was a problem. We talked about haggling. I said he had the big goal in overtime against the Pittsburgh Penguins. A few years ago, but haggling speed. No finish. And that's probably why Pittsburgh got rid of him. We'll see if it changes their in Los Angeles, Donald says what's up, Don. So the Rangers and I on his face against each other which team do you think needs to win more? And of course that goes back to yesterday both teams need to win. I mean the islanders and the Rangers are both teams that did not make the playoffs last year. Okay. These are two teams that are in a very very very wide open metropolitan division. So every every game is huge Chris. Hi, donna. Remember, the comic the commercial on how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie roll pop. Well, how many posts do the flyers need the hit before they score? They hit a couple on Tuesday and five last night. Have a good weekend. Certainly led to the three nothing victory for the devils. That's going to happen. Sometimes you just. Get one of those nights where you know, it goes off the post, but I will say this as a fan of the sport. Do you wonder if it had been a little bit towards in the goal with the Goldie of made the save you have to ask yourself that post is not count as a shot on goal? But yeah, it is frustrating sometimes because you're that close to scoring and not getting it done, especially a flyer team that you know, sometimes can be a little limited offensively joy says Flury will was recorded picking up a doughnut in the drive through in Vegas after their five. "Coach for the university of Manitoba's women's hockey team. Great story, somebody should do a story. I don't know if any of the columnist out there that might listen to this podcast would want to put pen to paper to write a column about some of the stories of the emergency goaltenders seems to happen. At least a half a dozen times during the course of the year sickness injury. They signed somebody off the street that we the back of cold goaltender. Occasion. We saw it in Chicago last year where they actually get to see some action. Sometimes it's a real fun story. And it's one of the kind of cool things about the goaltending in the National Hockey League's not quite the way. It was back in the original six era. We'd have to borrow a goaltender in the arena that belonged to the property of the other team. Like if Montreal's playing Toronto in Toronto and jock plot got her Toronto. What have to supply the backup goaltender that was actually being paid by the Leafs? That's how weird things were back then so it's not quite to that level. But still kind of a cool story. Thor says thoughts on the idea the penguins are going down the same road as the Blackhawks what once was top talent aging. It's a great question. I mean, obviously Crosby's thirty one he's hurt right now. But when he's healthy he stoneleigh player Malcolm's playing terrific Kessels playing terrific the problem. I think with the Pittsburgh Penguins right now. I don't think it's at the level of Chicago where everybody got old at once. It's just that they need to get more from their other ancillary players, and they also have to. Figure out the goaltending. It's not all on dismiss. But there's been times where you look at the goaltending. You just say is this where you want the goal tending to be last night Murray, you know, gave up four goals dismiss spin. Okay. Murray's been okay. We're an era now where offenses aplenty and you need your goal tending to be good. And and I'm not sure that the caliber of goaltending. They're getting a Pittsburgh right now is really getting the job done Brian asked the sixty four thousand dollar question. Why can't the Rangers win in Brooklyn you when you think about fifteen sixteen? All right. That's when the island has started to play in Brooklyn. So that was the Rangers coming off their fourteen run to the Cup and their fifteen run to the conference final. So in fifteen sixteen there were a playoff team in sixteen seventeen. The Rangers went to the second round of the playoffs. Didn't go to the playoffs last year. I owners went to the playoffs once as well in that span of time back in sixteen and went to the second round. So you could make a case that these teams have been pretty much unequal footing over the last three plus years, and yet Rangers can't do it. Let me tell you. I think it comes down to this. And this might not be something that a lot of people can understand. But I think I can articulated because of coming from the tri-state area where there are multiple teams in every sport. Okay. Only people in Chicago. Can appreciate it. Because you've got the White Sox and the cubs and people in southern California can appreciate you got the ducks and the kings dodgers and the angels. And you know, the Rams and the chargers now and the clippers and the Lakers, but there's very few places where that happens these that I think there's always gonna be that second team in town. And in some cases, the Anders depending on what's happening with the devils of the third team in town. And it probably aggravates all those islander players that when they play in Brooklyn half of the building is filled with ranger fans. And when the Rangers score the building lights up now lights up a little more when the islanders score. But it's probably a little bit disconcerting that you feel like you're not getting the quintessential home ice advantage in a probably makes you play with a chip on your shoulder. You know, this is this is a time. With the really get paid attention to other than their die hard fans. And it's a great rivalry. And the Rangers come in is the big brother and the islanders of the little brother, and maybe the intensity is in the same. Kevin shattenkirk set up before the game last night, we have to match their intensity. So it right there..

"League-record and welcome to the Friday edition of games conduct. Diam Don, the Greco lots to get to so many different places. We can start there. So many crazy games last night. Congratulations to empty Beauvilliers gets his first NHL hat trick. Is I four point game in the outer seventy five win over the Rangers. I don't know what it is ranger just can't win and Brooklyn. Oh, six and one in seven meetings at Barclay center since the islanders moved in there in two thousand fifteen twenty sixteen eight consecutive wins for the owners of the Rangers. That's a franchise record against the aisles. And consider there's a team won four straight Stanley Cups and never had an game winning streak against the Rangers. And the Rangers actually been pretty good over the last few years, but you know, for whatever reason the Rangers bring the best out of the islanders, and the chant in Brooklyn was you can't beat us which is going on for the last couple of years. Gotta see these teams play in the postseason would just be amazing. The crowd was a little sparse because of the bad weather in the state area. So it's a little over thirteen. Thousand people usually that's a pretty much guaranteed sell-out, especially with all the problems the had in Brooklyn, the Rangers bring a lot of fans and their spirited and their feisty. And it was a great call to just a wide open crazy game third time in the last four games. The Rangers of Blohm a two-goal lead had the first two goals this game. They get a power play goal from Kreider. They got a goal from clayson his first since November tenth of last year. So a calendar year for clayson his first goal is the ranger. But then the outer score six of the next seven goals Rangers make it interesting down six three get a couple of tallies to make it six five. But the Nelson scores the empty netter to put it away and a little disconcerting for Henrik Lundqvist allowed five goals on seventeen shots and did not play the third period. Alexander Georgi of played almost put himself into a winning situation. The Rangers really have no shot if Lundquist isn't going to play well and lung Quist did not play. Well, maybe for the first time in a while that that's been the case here. About the Rangers showed heart. They showed fight. But just not enough as this islanders team. Now's won a couple in a row after three straight losses. And I thought Greis was good to give up five goals, but he did face forty-one shots in the game. And some high quality saves to boot by the story is Anthony Beauvilliers getting his first four point nine. It's first NHL hattrick in the win the devils blanked the Philadelphia Flyers three nothing. So after the double struggled on the road. They've finally win a game in Philadelphia's they've undefeated so far in the state of Pennsylvania. Right. I mean, we're actually they did lose the flyers earlier this year in Philadelphia. But now the devils with their road victories three of them to against Pittsburgh in one against Philadelphia..

"Have lost some close games here in a row. What do you think it'll take this team to start winning these games when they get forty plus shots at night thoughts on Otto who has also tied the record for the most points in consecutive games. Sebastian Aho is a terrific player. Kneecaps? They sent down to the minor leagues. Very very young team. Carolina. And you've also got what seven different players on the team from last year similar to the Rangers. They gotta learn how to win these games. They get a lot of shots on goal. But they've gotta find some finish. That's for sure. But I think you're relying on a lot of young players. They're still trying to learn their way they'll figure it out. And rod Brindamour looks like he's going to be a pretty good coach. So I think they will kind of figure it out. But right now, they're getting the opportunities. They're getting the shots on goal that just have to learn to win some of these games. But they're still off to a good start of the playoffs. Started today they'd be in. So they've got to be pretty happy with their start. So. Good for them. And we'll see if they can continue, but they do have to learn how to finish. And I always kind of lean back toward the ranger sometimes when my analysis because that's the team that I cover, but David Quinn was asked a question the other day about finish and scoring is that a mental thing or physical thing. He kind of leaned on it being more of a mental thing that sometimes it gets in your head a little bit you take shots. And maybe you're thinking too much just that a blasting shot away Brett Hull setting never aimed. He just shot at the net. And because he shot so often eventually found the back of the net scored over seventy goals on the season one year. But I do think it's kinda combination of the both. But what you see is. When a player is competent and a pass comes across the middle. He will he'll one time. You know, it'll be a quick release. It'll score. It'll beat the goaltender a guy that struggling with his confidence will catch the puck, wait or hesitate a second, and then shoot and in that little split-second, which doesn't seem like it's a lot of time. When you watch the game. But it's enough time for the goaltender put himself in a position and score. Mean these goaltenders are terrific. So the idea of just putting a puck on the nets good one. But if you really want to beat the goaltender a lot of the time, it's got to be just a quick release. And if you're thinking too much about it, and it's in your head that split second hesitating could be the difference between a goal and an easy. Save for the netminder. Chris I Don in honor of Halloween. What's scarier for the twenty nineteen twenty season. Jack Hughes on a loaded Colorado Avalanche team or the young towns of New York Islanders who recently drafted his linemate, Oliver Wallstrom all good point for all that to Colorado thing. I mean Hughes on Colorado with all those young players is absolutely scary. And the avalanche. We've talked about before have gotten their goaltending situation settled I liked their blue line along with Gerard. Yeah. That's a Colorado team that could be very, you know, scary scary. Good. And again sorry for your fliers. But they really had a nice bounce back win last night. We'll see. If that can continue Jake says that top line Boston looks lethal with Ron Pasternak and Marsh, and do you see the three is the top line in hockey, if not what are some others that are up there with them. While certainly you look at he sheer hall and Palmeri with the devils off to a tremendous start. We've talked about it before Colorado with Rantanen Landis Kaga. Mckinnon tremendous line. There viciously good. Those are two of the ones that pop into my head. But certainly Boston's line has to be considered one of the best. We'll five minute major came through for me. Somebody had asked me yesterday about the scariest mascots, and to be honest with you only can come up with a handful off the top of my head. But of course, five and a major knows everything about hockey sends the tweet and Travis does a great job..

"So thanks so much guys from. For the for the tremendous feedback on that conversation yesterday. Charles says, hi, Don, thanks so much for the work with hockey. Love the coverage last night the Rangers gave up a late goal, but came back to win it different result than Sunday in Los Angeles. When they gave up the lead and the kings scored laid good sign for a team trying to build, and that's a great point Charles. And even coach said after the game David Quinn. You know, they're trying to learn how to win and I thought about this. And I brought this up on the Michael cassio, the sometimes we look at competitiveness as a step in the right direction. Well, the teams competitive. Yeah, they haven't won yet. They're not good. But it seems like they're in every game. Well, that's only half the battle to me. I mean, if I if winning a game is is one hundred percent, right. I think fifty of it comes from just being competitive in hanging in the game. The other fifty is learning how to win those games. So you lose a bunch of games to one. I guess you. Could Pat yourself on the back and say, we're not getting blown outbreak here break there. We can win. No. It tells me is is that your competitive. But you just haven't figured out how to win. And once you start to do that. Then it becomes a habit. And those are the times where you end up winning more than you lose. And last night would was a great opportunity for the Rangers to show that they're starting to learn how to win Sunday was an example of how maybe they're not really sure yet. So for them to be able to rebound and give the game away. Like, they did or at least give the opportunity for a point and an opportunity to win an overtime on Sunday. When the Alec Martinez goal was scored with less than fifty five seconds to go. They seem the learn their lesson. They they didn't hang their head after giving up the late goal they fought and they ended up getting the win. And you don't care to give the extra point to the other team because it's not in the conference. But the other thing is trying to do it more consistently. So go out and beat the ducks deductor eminently beatable winless in their last six get to in a row for the first time this season, then come home and see what you can do against buffalo and start adding to it getting to five hundred climbing above it. So you don't learn your lesson in one day. But at least you made a step in the right direction sets. Good observation from Charles Donal says, hey, Dan, love your show. You got to say good wins by the islanders last night over the penguins and the Rangers over the sharks. And the shootout of the devils got beaten badly by the lightning. Do you think they will recover? Yeah. I believe they'll recover. I mean tap is a really good team. And you kind of the figure you're walking into a buzzsaw after what happened the Tampa over the weekend. But what's disconcerting is jump out the to nothing lead? And that was pretty much at the rest of the night. So you can't allow Tampa team as skilled as they are what? Stamkos and kucherov even with headman out of a lineup. That's still a very very good team and get forty four shots on goal. My bed is you're not going to be winning too many games. When you allow that Tampa team that many opportunities now, eight goals is embarrassing for sure. But I think they have the ability to bounce back. Philip says, hi, Don when Babcock was in Detroit, I've heard that he and zebra didn't have a good relationship and the de Berk didn't like him as a coach is that true. True. If so was it always like that. Or was it something that happened that got that Aberg mad at him? Great question. I don't know. I can ask EJ when we have him on Monday. I've heard rumors about it. But I can't really speak to it. I will say this. Mike Babcock is a fascinating guy. I remember a conversation. I had with him. I was doing a game at Detroit and a couple of reporters I was actually with EJ. And we're kind of just sitting there at the old Joe Louis arena, and we were in the tunnel air outside the dressing rooms..

"The lease. He's the king misconduct podcast with Don. League-record at Waltham to the Wednesday. Dish of game is conduct. I am Don McGregor so much to go over Slough games last night. Really interesting storylines, a bunch of different places we can begin. But let's start with a team that probably doesn't get a lot of play improbably should who they're playing most recently. And that's the New York Islanders. They put together a nice little run here of three consecutive wins. After a brutal loss when they lost at home, the Florida. Remember they had to nothing lead going into the third period. Give three unanswered goals. Lost the game while they hit the road, which is probably good for them. Because the whole Brooklyn experience. Everybody knows they're leaving. You know, they haven't had that chance to kind of get the flow at the Coliseum. The road was probably the best thing for this team. So they won three in a row including six three victory over Pittsburgh and do not ignore that. The penguins were red hot playing some terrific hockey. They went out to western Canada and just slammed everybody. And then they come home to take on an island or team, and they get doubled up six to three Jordan Everley with a couple of goals. Greis was very good. And now the Allender sit just one point back of first place in the division. I realized things are just so wide open right now you've got the defending Stanley Cup champions on the outside looking in for the playoffs and the islanders have played eleven games. So Pittsburgh does have a game in hand on them. A Washington has a game in hand on them. But hey, listen, they won three in a row. Trying to you know, learn how to play with Lee now is the new captain figuring out life after JT, and that's a nice win. And if Abberley can start warming up Lee, stay consistent, we know at bars L can be get consisting goaltending. This this team that can make the playoffs this year. They really can. So to be able to get six goals on just twenty five shots as they beat both goaltenders last night in Mary and dismiss so a nice win for the Allender six to three unexpectedly over Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh devils. Crushed in Tampa eight to three devils jumped out to a to nothing lead in this one real quick. It was as if Tampa was sleepwalk. Remember this team? They got slammed by our own ah over the weekend miles would get this first of the year, Travis jackets tally. So you're five minutes into the game. The devils are up to nothing, and I'm sorry there had to be people in Tampa going. What's going on with our team right now? But then of all people. Brayden Colbourne gets his first two goals of the year before the period expires to make a two two when it was all said and done by an answer goals for Tampa. Stamkos gets his second of the year. I'm telling you when Steven stamkos begins to warm up. This team is going to be just so so dangerous kucherov with a couple of goals. Johnson had his fifth of the year. Paul Mary scored for the doubles to make it five three to kind of get them back into it. But no shot in the third period with Johnson kucherov and mcdonagh getting tally so Tampa nice bounce back victory for them and keep an eye on the devils here. They've kind of settled down after those four consecutive wins to start the season. They had a nice win over Florida. Although. That had to hang on in the third period for that. They've scored the first goal in every game but one this season, but it hasn't like they've won the mall. So it'll be interesting now that's neither is back from that hip injury. When he gets back in the door may be swing open for him to be able to get his job back, but still you can't blame the goaltending. Tampa Bay had forty four shots on goal that just completely unacceptable. Montreal settles down a bid after being hot coming off that three nothing victory over Boston in Boston on Saturday. And they get slammed by Dallas four two one four different goalscorers.

New York Islanders Pittsburgh devils Tampa Pittsburgh Tampa Bay Don McGregor Florida Paul Mary Johnson Canada Steven stamkos Jordan Everley Slough Brayden Colbourne hockey Brooklyn Greis Lee Abberley
