Parenting in The Time of Corona

"For almost every working person in this country, what it meant to go to work changed radically in March and what it meant to go to school changed at exactly the same time between Graham Adams lives in Indianapolis she has four kids at home she is a single parent I have an eighth grader. I have a fifth grader in a second grader and then I have a one in Preschool Patrice works fulltime at Indiana University. School of Public Health it's a desk job so she can do it from home. That's all set at the same time though Patrice his four kids were all suddenly at home with her trying to go to class online and this presented a bunch of challenges. For Instance Patrice did not have five computers at home. We basically share it devices. If I didn't have meetings, I would pass my device onto whoever did have google meet for their class. The second issue was space there were five of Them in one house. So Patrice developed a system, my daughter WHO's in middle school? She's up in her room. My fifth grader sits at the bar in the kitchen I sit at the dining room table in have my work set-up Patrice was especially concerned about her second grader. He's a special needs student and structure and consistency are really important to him. Patrice says learning off screen and the whole idea of being at school while he's actually at home, which is really difficult for him and so Patrice says she needs to watch him all the time. Make sure he's focusing doing. Okay. Absorbing lessons I'm in I shot A. Fifth grader but I'm an ear shot and I shot of my second grader. So if I hear something I can jump up from where I am and go over to him to assist him with what's going on and to tell him to pay attention and then there's portrays youngest her preschooler there was no zoom class for him at all so patrice improvise I'm just going to be honest with you I turn on Youtube and say go elmo's teaching you today We're going to watch a loop of elmo videos and then I may take I will take a minute and may read him a book. So Patrice is trying to do her job in a house with four kids at the same time she's trying to make sure her second graders do milquet with the screen learning and she's trying to make sure her little is occupied and she's trying to make sure kids aren't like on their computers and phones all the time, and she's also trying to make sure that everybody gets in a little outdoor time like time to. Be a kid we actually go outside for recess we get some fresh air. We take a walk around the block or we have a basketball hoop in our driveway we play basketball, and of course, all of this is on top of you know regular mom stuff caring for the kids kissing booze wiping noses, rubbing the household cooking, the dishes, paying the bills all that stuff, and you know this has been patrice his life for six months. I'm extremely exhausted Friday will. After we got done with learning on Friday I, took a shower because I could not remember the last shower I took. I shouldn't say that on this interview but. I can remember the last. Hour and then I lay down in Saturday I didn't leave the house. I literally needed an entire day to recover. It was taxing like I literally felt it in my body. Like the how how the week wait on me It was a lot. For many people, it's too much millions of people are in situations like Patricia's and the job of parenting suddenly feels like it's not always compatible with a job in a lot of mixed gender couples where both people work women still take on the lion's share of housework and childcare, and so as a result of all these things coming together, women have been dropping out. Of the labor force last month six, hundred thousand men reentered the workforce at the same time five thousand women dropped out of the workforce meaning they stopped looking for jobs that today's indicator five thousand women leaving the workforce in August. So Patrice for her part says, she does not have a choice she has to work all of our kids are counting on her. And a third of children in the US aren't single parent households and those parents they have to make it work even if it's not working the bind single parent families are in right now is unreal and a lot of them even if they can't stop working, they are losing hours or having to cut back and losing income in that way. So I, mean in that way, Patrice just doesn't. Have a choice. She did have a choice about sending her kids back to school. So Patrice his district in Indianapolis. They said, you can send your kids back to school or you can continue with virtual learning for a semester at first patrice his choice teams really clear. The schooling from home working from home thing just didn't feel sustainable. It's almost like I had. PTSD. DidN'T WANNA go back there. I literally said. I am going to call the school and see if they have spots where the atoms children. When school opens up. We will it, but then you know her calculus really changed because there was a pretty serious cove outbreak. In Indianapolis, over the summer now bridges really had to worry about herself or her children possibly getting sick also just the quality of the Education Patrice as the school has actually done it miraculously good job it got laptops out to all the students. So now all of her kids have their own devices she says, the teacher is tried really hard. Even still she says the education everybody got. Nowhere. Near what it was when they were like in physical school. So she had this like really tough decision to make well to be honest it was an agonizing decision. It was a decision that I went back and forth. A couple of times and so patrice had to make this decision that millions of parents are having to agonize over. She weighed the pros and cons, and finally she made her call opted to keep them home and healthy, and so at least for the next six months, Patrice GonNa keep trying to do basically the impossible work parent teacher. Cook. Clean fix a sink. I may say these things in in exhaustion. Sin Them Back to school but in all honesty I'm in the virtual learning I'm in this actual any for the long haul she's in virtual learning for the long haul and on that is similar to decision you may to right right. So my preschooler is back in a classroom, which is great. Her School is licensed as a daycare center so it's able to open fulltime. My fourth grader isn't home working on her laptop, but she's pretty independent for the most part. Answer. And also, we indicator wanted to see if we could potentially help battle with the educating of children. So if your kids have questions about money. Or business please send it in. You can send US voice memo at indicator NPR DOT ORG that's indicator at NPR dot org just have your kids say their name and their age and the

Los Angeles Lakers, Clippers Vote To End Season Following Boycott

"So. Let's go back to You know I was saying Chris that Lebron James over the course of the last twelve hours has changed his mind three times. These are difficult decisions he wanted out. He wanted to think about it and then he wanted to play and I said I appreciate. Lebron's willingness his lack of rigidity, his willingness to listen and talk, and that's one of the reasons I like Lebron is that he's a curious soul. In curious people, wear me out. Are you surprised that the players did? To play according to reports this morning. I'm not yesterday all this news was breaking and we were talking about it on our Radio Show Myself Rob Parker I felt like the most likely scenario was that they would start playing within a few days But then when the reports came out about the clippers and the Lakers, last night not wanting to resume the season s when I started thinking. Okay. This season really it truly is in jeopardy because obviously as you don has said in the meeting, you can't have the playoffs without the two best teams in the Western Conference so that got me skeptical but I figured you guys would go to sleep sleep on it and get up not quite as emotional as they were last. And you know I think what what I wanna hear is are there any I don't even know if concessions is the right word but have the what of the players talk with the owners about because remember the brand said in the meeting reportedly that he wants the owners to be held more accountable and the owners have a lot of power you know I've. Seen on social media, people criticizing the players saying, well, what what's boycotting the League going to do the League is not the one against the players I think the power is in the owners. They are very powerful people in this country very wealthy. They have connections at the highest levels of American society. They can be in touch with lawmakers yesterday think about it. The Milwaukee Bucks Basketball team was able to get the attorney general and the Lieutenant Governor or zoom. Like that that was done by the Bucks Owners would look at Robert Kraft Robert Kraft got he went to visit meek mill, the rapper and said in prison and said, he shouldn't be here two weeks later meek mill was out of prison audit charges were dropped the judge when the case had been changed the Rick Ross Jay Z. Philadelphia Eagles players Kevin. Hart, they had all been trying to get meek mill out of prison for five months. Robert Kraft missing says one statement and he's out in two weeks. That's the type of power that these owners wheeled and the players are beginning to understand that. So there are people that are talking to forget defunding police there what about abolishing some of the police unions? In, the owners could talk to talk to police commissioners achieves about and perhaps done only half police after the police belong to the Union. Anyway. But that can be a hindrance to justice. So those are the things I hope that the players will address with the owners say utilize your power or our behalf, and we'll play the game, and hopefully that's the kind of discussion. Go all throw something out at you. I heard a story this morning I thought was brilliant the Indianapolis Colts. Registered every player to vote yesterday and I thought that is that is incredibly bright. How about this owners around the NBA. You can now not only registered to vote in the arenas, but you can vote inside the arenas. If we're absolutely to me, that's an obvious one like really for the for the average guy like you and me not a billionaire for the average guy like you and me are powers in voting that's really where our power is. So make it easier to vote. So I wonder if that's been discussed the voting issue. I would imagine a has especially remember Lebron's got the voting. Initiative he put together. So I'm sure that that that's the case we saw I think in Houston, they're opening up the arenas as voting site they should all the arena should do that. Make easy on the people whose votes have business suppress historically to get out and vote, and they don't have to be there. All Day is as simple as it is for the people out in the suburbs.

'The Greatest Spectacle In Racing': Indy 500 To Run Without Spectators

"33 teams 500 miles and a century's worth of history. It's the Indianapolis 500. But this year there won't be any fans in the stands to see what's been called the greatest spectacle in racing, Samantha Horton from Indiana, Public broadcasting reports. This is what the 500 sounds like on a normal race day war of hundreds of thousands of fans overtaking sounds of the core engines in the final few laps, But this year's race will sound a little more like this along to 2.5 mile track. The race has always taken place in May, but pandemic response upon two back to August 23rd. Roger Penske, who bought the track earlier this year, was still hoping to have tens of thousands of race fans in attendance. But that hope faded in June, when race officials announced half attendance then 25% and then no. One. It was a decision. Race officials tried to prevent Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Bowles says a comprehensive health plan was even developed to try to have fans attend the race. So really, from the moment in March, we knew that we needed to start thinking about what could the Indianapolis 500 look like with a bunch of restrictions and in order to make sure that we took care of everyone's health and safety, But even with these precautions, Spectators were ruled out.

Did This Secret Tournament Put Players in Danger?

"In July thirty, first the American. Gaming Network was supposed to host the AG call of duty, Indianapolis Land Event is being promoted as one of the biggest amateur caught events out there with a prize pool of seventy five hundred dollars to be clear. This tournament was not a part of Challengers League, which is the official semi Pro League of Kati Sports AG is a third party tournament organizers according to their website runs tournaments for call of duty Ballard and Rainbow Six. Siege now, as you can imagine what the world in the midst of a pandemic having a bunch of sweaty dudes, Patton to a convention hall is not the Best Look. So on July thirty first the day the tournament was supposed to start Aga decided to move the tournament on mine quote after discussions with representatives from activision, we are decided to change the Indianapolis to be online only for health and safety concerns players are advised to. Participate in the tournament from their home location along we apologize for any inconvenience in which this may bring upon players spectators in organizations. We look forward to working with activision for future events and quote this sentiment was repeated on August first by Jeffrey Elliott who according to a website is the CFO of the company, and well, that sounds like the obvious and smart thing to the tournament allegedly continued as land event later, that same day. Basically, what you just saw looks like that land event with a bunch of Sweaty dudes packed into a convention hall exactly what agents said they didn't want to happen on top of that. Another video surfaced that looks like a bunch of people packed new AIRBNB trying to continue playing the tournament online. Gauge cash a CO founder of. Who has a name that belongs in Mortal Kombat. Distance themselves from the event and said that the indy open was to be played online period but according to report from dexterity, there were allegedly agent employees at the event despite saying they had nothing to do with it. People were even alleging that Augean only put that original statement to hide from activision blizzard who are the publishers of duty. The fact that this land event was still taking place. Now, this whole situation caught the attention of dominating Jilin know who's the general manager for the Toronto Ultra a pro call of duty. Team competing in the call of duty league. She replied to a tweet with quote I reported everything to activision blizzard absolutely stupid and I can't believe that they thought they'd get away with it and be bold enough to posted about it and a former event organizer Adam epic. Kella even weighed in calling the situation a disaster I also reached out to cash Elliott and multiple sponsors associated with the tournament cash. told me that the narrative online is full of lies in isn't true but didn't explain why that's the case and Elliott just pointed to a statement that made after all of. This controversy popped off quote in order to preserve the competitive integrity of the online tournament, we have decided to postpone the second day of competition to next Sunday August ninth twenty twenty due to an overwhelming amount of players away from home with the inability to play in a safe environment we feel that this is the best way to ensure that everyone is competing safely and fairly the remainder of the tournament and quote also when I went back to gather more information on the indie open agent has deleted the page from their website now, even if players ignored AG and Cassius statements. that the tournament had been moved online and even if he had nothing to do with this secret land tournament, the question I have is, why did they wait until the day of the event to move it online? It's not like the pandemic caught everybody off guard both the League and the challengers. League moved all of their remaining tournaments online months ago. Why couldn't agm do the same and remember representative of activision reached out again, which according to their statement is why they decided to move the tournament online and that's pretty big red flag because to me what that says is that was fully prepared to host a pretty big land event in the middle of a pretty dangerous public health crisis, and the only reason they didn't is because activision wealth stepped in and told them not to because let's be honest when you plan to host a land event in the middle of a giant global health crisis, you were putting people in danger now, I have no idea. A is going to take disciplinary action against the players who did show up to this secret tournament. Also cash if you remember is a CO founder of Augean re tweeted somebody comparing the multiple worldwide human rights protests with these tournaments implying that if one is allowed to happen, these tournaments should also be allowed to happen and yeah I don't know if that's chief if Augean knowingly. Secret Land. Event, after saying it was going online that's fucked up and they put people in danger and if that's the case I, hope activision blizzard takes action against these guys.

"Gentleman speaking and we're back when we left off off. We're about to lose a whole bunch of semen but then see so yelled at us for Juergen off in the dark during the interstitial skits so some something boat Noah go all right so let me reset the scene here the USS Indianapolis sank about nine hundred people are floating in the water in various stages as of dead and it's almost pitch black and this is when the sailors start to notice. They are not alone in the water. Oh they've got each other. Ah Yeah there's that now it's here that I'd like to return to that. Bending machines are more dangerous just then sharks bullshit right because okay imagine how this story would play out at this point. They discovered that they were surrounded by vending machines. Ah Like I mean. Don't get me wrong. It would be frustrating. Their money would be wet. The bill reader. Back out. They'd be robin it against the edge the wrinkles out and shed but it's still be a hell of a lot better than being surrounded by pocket. Sharp he's a bunch of dollar bills going up and down man just circle dollar bills. You can only put five dollars in the water their fins. Aw take mileage on that side tonight okay now up until this point this has been a pretty upbeat story. I know but this is where it gets bad. And it gets really fucking bad. Okay so at this point. There's a lot of injured people. In the water. They're bleeding their thrashing. They're basically screaming. All you can eat shark. Buffy this exit and it doesn't take long for the sharks to notice you know there was one like shark shark stat or refused to pull over because he made Baloney sandwiches for the average is great is all it. Is You know that little sharks relic like. Oh Chris off. My Dad beat them up all weird so he's dad like the fight. Sharks learn a lot about each other. Yeah all right. So there's an important thing you need to keep in mind wind here. Sharks are not universally recognized ocean monsters. Then they are now like like these will wear aware that sharks existed and that sharks could kill Gila motherfucker but they had nowhere near the fear of that people who grew up post jaws would have. We're at least they didn't at the start of this whole ordeal. Yes sharks are that just that super super introverted nerdy guy looking for the right time to strike up a conversation with humans so you come here often gnome actually trapped in the water and cool cool. I can smell your blood. What nothing I didn't you say something all right so now at first the shark extorting taking the corpses which is really just tidying up? But you know big deal but they were getting a taste for human meat and that's not good so by the time the sun comes up they can see like their sailors can dorsal fins intermingled amongst them. They started a group together as much as they can. The sharks like no no. This is perfect. It's perfect get get in groups. That's I start wrapping seaweed around. Let's get one bag of rice. The per group sprinkle a little row at close cluster together. It's a good strategy. I don't like when my food is touching either right exactly all all right so again that they were leaping off of this ship in a near panic right they are way more people than there are lifeboats. A lot of these people are just floating in the water with their life vests on or in a lot of cases without life vests just waiting for some do deny and hoping they can get to the life vest before the shark eats awesome and takes it with them. Is anybody else here. Picturing like the sharks trying on the life vest like it's fashion week doc. I did a bully. Mix Shark everyone at home. Did the late show went to bulimia shark those wondering all right so oh now sharks and drowning are not the only thing that these guys have to worry about. There's also Japanese people trying to kill him but they also they managed just to get some emergency rations into the water before the ship sunk but not enough so in addition to being food they're also running out of food and more importantly the running running out of water. Of course a lot of them had pretty severe injuries. To begin with you. Know what with all the torpedoes in the explosion. So basically they're all bobbing up and down wondering if the sharks the starvation vision dehydration the lack of buoyancy the gangrenous leg or the enemy ships are GONNA kill him I. I'm just picturing the reincarnated guys from that steamboat. And then the Syrup Europe explosion and then the radiation in South America being like okay you got to this point. It's a little funny. I love. There's dying due to become like a running guy in our show. He's like a constant under all right so now this would already be historically terrible story if the navy's showed up with rescue rescue boats like the next morning but they didn't in fact these hapless bastards would be floating in the South Pacific for four fucking days. He's before they were rescued. Or at least I'm sorry not all of them a right right. So uh-huh the navy spent four days walking around the docks of Manila Philippines. Being like fucking sure you haven't seen a six hundred. Ah We have a system and the captain never said he's not here all right so by the middle of the first day the sharks had run out of corpses to feast on and they started turning two injured sailors. Now there are a lot of really fucked up stories in this. Tell us many of them as I can like. Basically these guys are just GonNa like floating around board for hours at a stretch and then suddenly somebody's pushed up out of the water and drug along for a few. You doesn't yards screaming and then disappear below the waves or else they're just sitting around and suddenly somebody just disappears below the waves and all they see is a mangled life preserver floating back to the surface. This seems like a weird situation where people are bored. Ever right playing candy crush Socks pretty quickly. They realized the sharks are going. After the isolated sailors so the survivors started congregate in ever tighter groups. which is more or less safe provided vita you're in the middle of the group so you have to imagine like scores of people on the outside of these groups like desperately trying to push their way into the middle? We said yeah no swimming under and popping back up in the middle we Steve Swimming on the right now. He just went on alert. I'm not saying. Make this into a musical but I am saying if this were one. This would be a perfect time for that synchronized ernest swimming number and it would still have less deaths than Spiderman. Turn off the dark wind Graham running. Oh fewer deaths thank you. Of course that was quiet. See that one was quiet. Alright so through all this time. Of course they're also starving. Now they did have some rations but nowhere near enough and even what they did have they often couldn't use right like back. There's one One of the survivors recalls a story of him and his friend opening a can of spam and then seeing a bunch of Dorsal fins. Just zeroing in on that fucking spam. So they like to eat their starving to death and still. They're throwing food away from themselves. You know yeah that's what you need when you're dying thirst. Brian Salt Poor. Yeah yeah the only part of the story that makes any sense is throwing the spanaway now. I'd rather die from sharks right right so of course more important than the lack of food is the lack of water people are dropping from dehydration. Pretty quickly I mean. They're not dropping very far well. Visually slowly they drop a really long ways but yeah drew now of course as is so often the case when schick shipwrecks people start dying of thirst some of them start drinking saltwater which which of course kills them but also like drives a lot of them crazy. I so you have a lot of stories at this point of like people just like diving under the water themselves dragging people down with them. You know it just gets better from here and also Justa validate quint from jaws. There actually were a lot of stories of people like do you like the sharks would just eat the underwater. This is my mind for sharks eating.

"Fun. When you hear people talk about going to your website <hes> as much as people do so. That's it makes me feel good. Let's get into <hes> this weekend. It's it's kinda. Big the guy here <hes> yeah just a little bit. I mean you normally have the prestige you normally have the history that goes along with brickyard but now there's another added layer to that. Yes a added layer of the onion this is this is the the playoff. Will it all here. The regular season ends here in the playoffs begin after afternoon appaluse. That'll be a fun twist. I think they needed it because we built it up year after year after year. Oh it's about the history it's about the prestige d._j. And then the race fell flat yeah yeah no. I totally agree now. It's like well. They're they gotta get done. I mean somebody could win this thing and propel themselves into the playoffs. Yeah i mean you're looking at guys like jimmy. Johnson heck even chris butchers on a pretty good tara. All of a sudden you have one of these guys sneaks up and in and takes it and and this throws things way off if that happened so <hes> a lot to a lot to raise for here in indianapolis this week one team team that you might want to keep an eye on joe gibbs racing. They've won three of nascar's biggest races in twenty nineteen. <hes> kicking the season off with denny hamlin at the daytona five hundred mark insurance tricks junior then took checkers at the coke six hundred charlotte and then of course <hes> last weekend eric jones winning the southern five hundred at darlington so <hes> <hes> this weekend indianapolis motor speedway one of the most prestigious race tracks in all the world. I have a feeling we could see j._r. Car run very strong. There are maybe and with a number eighteen on it possibly no way yeah. He's known to run strong in two years in a row. He did <hes> one of those years being the year. He won the championship so <hes> he he's definitely always stout when we go to when we go to indianapolis there's something about actually indianapolis drivers that win there air and eventually win the cup. It's th there's a stat in there somewhere yeah a lot of times. The person who wins the brickyard ends up either going to win the championship or pretty close and i be you know even with the current playoff format as hard as it is to predict things.

Check that out and today we're gonna talk talk about the darlington as well as indianapolis motor speedway this coming weekend <hes> the entire season is coming down to this weekend. It's it's gonna be exciting. You know indianapolis is is prestigious in its own right and when they had the the the race during the regular season it's still in the regular season but now it's got a lot more meaning meaning we always talked about the prestige and the history and all that stuff and sometimes the race fell flat now you've got all that stuff the prestige asian and everything that goes along with indianapolis motor speedway and and the history and all that stuff and now they've added another layer another layer to the racing that you know it's playoff playoff time you you gotta go for the win if you don't have one and you got to maintain your points if you're you're right there on the bubble we'll talk about all that later on in the program so lots lots going on in the world of nascar racing but to last week and darlington speedway darlington south carolina the track too tough to tame the lady in black black and home of three wide racing. Did you see that how exciting was that race. So cool you know in in pass races that the history history of that particular track it was up on the wall and that's your groove single file. You gotta run next to the wall. You gotta do it. Kyle larson style this year. It seemed to be <hes> passing all over the race track so a very delayed start because of the rain i mean it was it was coming down. It didn't look like this race was gonna go go at all <hes> but it did <hes> late sunday evening into monday morning as when the checkered flag finally flew so a double day of racing <hes> so that's that's pretty cool. Fans stayed packed house. Lots of lots of fans actually decent t._v. Ratings are checking this. I don't know if you if you caught this but the tv ratings for nascar <unk> have steadily.

"That doesn't begin to do Justice to the parts of the story that seem by comparison with crap like that to be nothing. How do you talk about? No water and how that makes you feel day after day when you're suffering and no decent food. I mean, these no sleep. The the wounds they said that one boy and one of these rafts one of the survivors couldn't help, but point out with sitting there with his mouth wide open in such pain that he couldn't even make a noise. You ever been in a situation with a personal like that. Just one person in one situation. Any one of these things is again when you talk about war. The first thing you think about is none of this stuff should ever happen again. And then the next thing you think about is that when it does look what people can endure and look at what they do in terms of self sacrifice for another human being, who's in the situation, you know, that's awful in a situation that you yourself might be sharing. So that's when it becomes extra heroic. When some of these people are doing things like giving their life vest to a guy who needs it more. It's not like you're doing a good deed for someone you found in the street, it's it's reducing your own chances of survival to help somebody else's chances of survival. Those are pretty amazing stories. And I think the reason that we're so fascinated with these horrible tales is there's something life-affirming about the people that get through them and not just how they conduct themselves at the time, but how it both changed them and how you know the the silent heroism of living with it afterwards. And I think we we have more understanding of that now than we used to with things like PTSD, but I don't think we even give it anywhere near the thought it deserves. I mean, we all have traumatic memories in our lives. Life provides you with some by default, but some people get way more than their share. Can you imagine if like plugging something in the back of your head, like from the matrix, I could upload. The memories of one of these Indianapolis survivors into your, not just your brain, but like had fused with your emotion. So you have the feelings. You could have the flashbacks from an experience. You never had imagine what would do to you pretty darn quickly. Right? I just gave you the memories of an Indianapolis survivor now. Imagine not being able to ever get them out of your head. Now imagine going through the original experience. You know, my brain never wants to ever do any research on this personally. You understand, but I can't help, but wonder if somehow the cumulative effect, you know over decades of all these horrible memories and flashbacks and nightmares. Does that ever come close to equaling the terribleness of the experience itself. And if it doesn't, how much of it is like, you know, picking the scab continually, you know of the wound that changed your life forever. Now we may not have gone through the wound, but think about hopes that you'd be just having the memories all of a sudden implanted in your head about what it was like when you got it mentally or emotionally speaking. In my mind, when you look at it, the sinking of the Indianapolis is not really a war story. If it was a war story, I think maybe we would have included it in the series that we're doing on the Pacific war and the war in Asia and second World War right now. But it's not like that in my mind, it's about as connected to war as I see it as the nine eleven attacks were connected to terrorism. They are the thing that creates, you know, the first domino falling and a number of horrible incidents. But once the initial attacks happen, you go from having a war movie if you'll pardon the connection again to entertainment to a disaster film, like the kind I grew up with, and as I said, what is so I don't know if amazing as good word to use such a horrific situation, what is so frightful about what the Indianapolis survivors and non survivors had to go through is they don't get to just have one disaster film be, you know, their traumatic memory..
