"The pandemic has been with us now for about nine months early, has had every country on the globe and now it's claimed its one millionth life, according to the official totals at Johns Hopkins. With more deaths expected here, CBS is Dr David Vegas. Many countries are increasing now. Either a second wave or continuing wave with death that includes Brazil in the United Kingdom, and especially India with dramatically increasing numbers, and I think you're going to see it really globally until We have a vaccine Pandemics. Economic toll is no secret, of course, and some just released numbers show Americans were saving more money until it hit new figures from the Federal Reserve show. The longest economic expansion in US history helped American families amass a lot more savings between 2016 and 2019, but many still haven't made up what they lost in the 2008 recession. The top 1% share of the wealth was close to a 30 year high and now economists fear that much of the progress made by so many workers has probably been Reversed in the pandemic. Global coronavirus deaths surpass 1 million
"One million deaths worldwide. Covad 19 death toll reached that grim milestone on Monday. Here's CBS's Dr David Vegas. This includes over 200,000 United States over 140,000 in Brazil. Over 95,000 in India over 75,000 in Mexico, 42,000 United Kingdom and I could go on. It really is him every country on the

"People are observing the rules on Italians, like other Europeans are pretty mystified and horrified. By how the infections are spreading. So so vastly in the United States now, you know, hear the anti mask movement is really minuscule. I think one reason is that the threat posed by plagues. It's kind of enshrined in the Italians, literature. And so the notion of the play is not just part of the cultural DNA. It's even embedded in the language. Lauren, Let me let me finish with you. I mean, India is facing this dire circumstances right now. Anything keeping people hopeful? Yeah, it's tired. If the virus continues to spread at this rate will probably overtake the U. S and total cases sometime in the next couple weeks. But you asked if there's any reason to be hopeful The fatality rate in India appears to be low, and that's been chalked up to youth demographics. India, More than half the population is under the age of 25. So there's the idea that maybe they've been able to survive the virus better than other populations that said a very small minority of deaths in India are ever medically certified. So it's really difficult to know how many people are dying, and the numbers could be way off. India in recent weeks has ramped up testing a few days ago, It did a million and a half tests in just 1 24 hour period. So I mean, that's huge, and it gives authorities a better picture of just how far this virus has spread in the Indian population. As we mark this moment, a million deaths from Corona virus around the world. Speaking to our colleagues, NPR's Lauren Frayer covers India. Sylvia Poggioli in Rome and Anthony Kun in Seoul. Thanks to all of you Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, David. All right. We're now going to introduce you to a rat. A rat named Ogawa and Magoo is no regular rodent. Ogawa is An award winning hero rat. He lives in Cambodia and sniffs out dangerous landmines left behind. After decades of conflict. He has a very strong character is very quick. And he's a hard worker. But he's also the first one to take a nap when there is a short break. It's Michael Hyman, who works with Mangala in Cambodia. Bigelow was awarded a gold medal for his bravery. The UK veterinary charity PDS A's chair, John Smith introduce him at a virtual award ceremony. This is the very first time in our 70 70 year history of honoring animals that we will have presented a middle to a rat guy was tiny, rodent sized metal hangs on a blue harness under his long snuffling nose. That nose is important, Hyman says. Imagawa has cleared so far more than 140,000 Square meters, and he found more than 60 items, landlines and unexploded ordinances. A giant pouched rat and his human colleagues head out every morning before sunrise to a new site where there might be landmines. He is great at his job partially because he's too small. Actually set off any of the minds. He's searching attached to a string back and forward back and forward until this area is completely cleared if there is a mine Imagawa will stop and start scratching. A non profit called the Po Po trained Ogawa and his rodent associates in Tanzania, which is home to a lot of giant pouched rats. They're working with Cambodian officials to try and clear the country of landmines by the year 2025. Cambodia has ah, very high number of victims generally for a country that is suffering from a land mine problem recently. These numbers are going down, but we still have a lot of work to do in order to stop this from happening. Oh, God, what took a day off from sniffing to celebrate his award and a career of saving lives. Today he's going to enjoy a huge piece of watermelon. There is already half a watermelon waiting in his home gold medal and some celebratory watermelon. You deserve it. My God!.
Covid-19 has killed at least 1 million people around the globe
"Today, the world reached a new threshold of misery in the corona virus pandemic. At least one million people have now died of covert 19. That's according to a tally maintained by Johns Hopkins University. Joining us now is NPR Global health correspondent Narrate Eisenman Henery High, So one million lives gone. I mean, it's incredible to think we're reaching this death toll in less than a year. Yeah, it's been just over nine months since the first death was reported in Wuhan, China, and just looking at these numbers. We're seeing that half of these deaths were just in four countries, right? Right, the United States, Brazil, India and Mexico and with the exception of India, these countries are not among the most populous in the world. But in the case of the United States, which has the highest number of deaths that more than 200 for 1000 in Brazil, with more than 140,000 deaths Both of their president's expressed a lot of skepticism about the threat from the virus. The responses were chaotic and deaths surged in July and August and started to come down a bit but are now rising again. Of these four countries also don't just rank highest on total deaths over the entirety of the pandemic in the past week, they've also had the highest number of new deaths. And are there any new hot spots emerging at this point? In Argentina. The daily death toll has been climbing for months and has now really swerved up. European countries like Spain that saw a lot of death a while back, are seeing another upswing. Now you mention India is a special case. Why is that? Yes, it's the world's second most populous nation. So for a country of that size, India's 95,000 deaths isn't relatively speaking. All that high, which is all the more surprising since India is seeing a huge amount of infection, But among people who are contracting the virus there, the share who are dying doesn't seem to be as high is in some other countries. Monica Gandhi is an infectious disease specialist at University of California, San Francisco, she says. One theory is that people in India tend to dress with thes flowing fabrics. So even though it's hard to social distance people could do one thing during all of this, which is pick up their cloth from there. You know outfit and put it over their mouth and nose. If it reduces the amount of hours you get into that you get less sick. I think it could be driving down the severity of infection. That's so interesting. Yeah. You get a lower dose of the virus. Maybe you're more likely to survive. Another theory. Maybe people in India have been more exposed to previous current viruses, which gives them some immunity. Well, speaking of immunity, I mean as more and more people have gotten infected, does that Offer any hope in terms of seeing a slowdown in new cases or even knew deaths, Monica Gandhi says. Quite possibly, this is what's called Herd immunity, of course, and Gandhi stresses it should not be pursued as a strategy, because if you're reaching herd immunity through widespread infections, as opposed to vaccinations Along the way, A lot of people will still die. Rather, she says. Her immunity is a potential helpful effect. We may notice in the coming months. Then again, it is going to get colder in the coming months, at least in the Northern Hemisphere as winter approaches, So do you think that's going to make the pandemic worse? Well, one researcher Jeffrey Shaming of Columbia University, says evidence does suggest the Corona virus transmits better in cold climates. People spend more time indoors, the virus will have more opportunities. To move from person to person and be more neatly transmissible. That works against us.

Deno versus TypeScript
"Well, let's get to the point. How does type script fit into dino? Won't types crew field into dino as more safe way to writer programs way to make things more certain on expected. So you know that when you write with tight script, your force to type everything. So you always know what you're getting so that kind of fail-proof typing is extremely useful for large shallow scripts software. We recently had to write something that was critical in with money. We went with dice grip approach to make things super stable and predictable. I like that that were predictable in script. You always know what you're getting into the Phoenix Dino can ward with type script natively, you can type refile Andino will parse it just like any other showers creep filing dino doesn't care about their whether it's types creep or chevette script. So they is that there are some issues that the team. Found with a script because they were using task for DNA core and also for the user facing Api the cold but they were finding that they compiling the type script cold was taking a long time and it was increasingly getting longer and longer but they. They've found most important was that they didn't have found that tie screed was helping the organizing the code because I one of the issues I mentioned that they ended up with two body classes in separate locations. Also. They were maintaining like two tie script compiler host one for Dina Co the core. And another for the external user code, but both had a similar purpose and go. In the end they decided to go back, just plain chevette script for the core there were still retain the user code will still be typed. Chequered will still run through the type script compiler but they ended up in working with Chavez. creeped on. Leave for. Dinner. Core. And how does the type script support within dino compared to that of node? Well as mentioned, you can write native dino native the Thai script and lauded on Dino. You can get all the definition of the types in India no riding for example, Dino space types you'll need to sit up anything for Deana to understand types. Quit you just ride your program, it doesn't need any compilation. Dino will just run your. File. Wow that's interesting. How is that possible? How can you run type script without first compiling it down? Well the competitor is already integrated on the inner. Oh interesting. So so it's happening. It's just your. You don't ever have to have the the output of the Java script file from type. Script. Expecting interesting.
Trump's tax revelation, what are the highlights?
"Donald J trump paid seven hundred and fifty dollars in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency in his first year in the White House he paid another seven hundred and fifty dollars. He had paid no income taxes at all in ten of the previous fifteen years largely because he reported losing much more money than he made. So that's the lead. In this is in reporting from New York Times Sunday afternoon by investigative reporters Russ Butner Suzanne Craig, and Mike Macintyre now Russell Suzanne incidentally or two of the three that dropped the huge story on trump's finances in October of two thousand, eighteen ahead of the midterm elections. and that was fueled by the financial documents provided by Mary trump who is now suing the president and his siblings by the way for defrauding her out of millions of dollars. But back to today's story from the New York Times quote. The New York Times has obtained tax return data extending over more than two decades for Mr Trump and the hundreds of companies that make up his business organization including detailed information from his first two years in office. It does not include his personal returns for two, thousand, eighteen or twenty nineteen. This article offers an overview of times findings. Additional articles will be published in the coming weeks. So this one, hundred and ninety two paragraph long story is an overview of the times findings. this is the sparks notes the abridged version the Reader's digest abridged story. And I'm GonNa go over the key highlights with you. Hundred Ninety two paragraphs is the overview of what they found. And they're going to be releasing multiple stories in coming weeks for details about what they've uncovered an important caveat here by their very nature, the filings will leave many questions on answered. These tax returns that they got many questions will be unfulfilled. They comprise information that Mr. Trump has disclosed to the irs not the findings of an independent financial examination they report the trump owns hundreds of millions of dollars in valuable assets, but they do not reveal his true wealth nor do they reveal any previously on reported connection to Russia? This kind of makes sense why Sivan's needs the documents, right These data simply report revenue not profit in two, thousand eighteen for example, trump announced his disclosure in his disclosure that he had made at least four, hundred, thirty, four, point, nine, million dollars. The tax records deliver a very different portrait of his bottom line forty seven point four, million dollars in losses. So he announced his disclosure, he made four hundred and thirty, five million. In here it says he lost forty seven point four million. To that's what he filed his taxes as. All of the information that times obtain was provided by sources with legal access to it. So we can. Try to guess. WHO This to the New York Times prior to the election maybe somebody on the case who knew that the case wouldn't be Sort of we wouldn't see any fruits of that until after the election. I don't know I'd be guessing. These tax data examined. by The Times, provide a roadmap of revelations from write offs for the cost of criminal defense lawyer a mansion used by the family retreat to a full accounting of the millions of dollars that the president received from the twenty thirteen Miss Universe pageant in Moscow. So that's kind of a Russian dealing. The apprentice may trump a total of four, hundred, twenty, seven, point, four, million, which he then invested in a collection of businesses that we're failing mostly golf courses. They steadily devour cash much as the money he secretly received from his father the and how that financed spree of quixotic overspending that led to his collapse in the ninety. the picture that perhaps emerges most starkly from the mountain of figures and tax schedules prepared by Mr Trump's accountants accountants. MAZAAR. Clue. Probably got this from the Manhattan Da Somebody there. This is the picture that emerges starkly is of a businessman president in a tightening financial vice. Most of trump's core enterprises from his constellation of golf courses to conservative magnet. Hotel in Washington I guess it draws conservatives. They all report losing millions if not tens of millions of dollars year after year. His revenue from the apprentice and from licensing deals drying up and several years ago he sold nearly all the stocks that now might have helped him plug holes in his struggling properties and tax looms. And within the next four years more than three, hundred, million in loans and obligations for which he's personally responsible personally will come do. Over the next four years. And these records show the actual and potential conflicts of interest created by trump's refusal to divest himself of his business interest. While in the White House his properties have become havens for collecting money directly from lobbyists, foreign officials, and others seeking facetime access or favors. The record for the first time, put precise dollar figures on these transactions. Here's some examples at the Mar, a Lago Club, a flood of new members starting in two thousand fifteen allowed him to pocket an additional five, million a year from the business people paying for access at his Durrell Golf Course in Miami. The roofing materials manufacturer GIF spent at least one point, five, million in two, thousand, eighteen even has as its industry was lobbying the trump administration to rollback egregious federal regulations conflict. In two thousand Seventeen Billy Graham vandalistic association paid about four hundred thousand dollars to the Washington Hotel where the group held at least one event during its four day World Summit in defense of persecuted Christians. Then when he took office Mr Trump said he would pursue no new foreign deals as president. Even. So in his first two years in the White House is revenue from abroad till seventy three, million dollars. And while much of that money was from his golf properties in Scotland and Ireland some came from licensing deals in countries with authoritarian leaning leaders or thorny geopolitics. For example, three million from Deteriora- from the Philippines two point three, million from India and one million from Turkey. Now the data also contains. Revelations about the one hundred, thirty, thousand dollars payment to Stephanie Clifford Stormy Daniels. The, which is one of the focuses of the Manhattan da Subpoena for trump's tax returns. Another financial information another clue that that might be where they got this. However. They say that it has no new revelations, but there is kind of a revelation because trump has acknowledged reimbursing cohen. Who made the? Payoff. But the materials obtained by The Times did not include any itemize payments to Cohen. The amount however could have been improperly included in legal fees written off as a business expense which are not required to be itemized tax returns that says to me. That trump. Didn't make the payoff where he would have had to have itemize it. Which says to me. It was improperly recorded. As a business transaction. At for legal fees, which is another thing to Manhattan as looking at. Business fraud. Falsifying business documents. Now, no subject has provoked more intense speculation about trump's finances than his connections to Russia while the tax records revealed no previously unknown financial connection and for the most part lack specificity required to do. So they did shed light on the money behind the two thousand thirteen Miss Universe pageant in Moscow at the subject of Enduring Intrigue Because of subsequent investigations into Russia's interference in two thousand sixteen. So basically what the time saying here is that there's nothing itemized here about Russia, but there wouldn't be because it's not required to be in tax returns but boy, did we see something interesting about the? Miss Universe Pageant in twenty thirteen. The records show that the pageant was the most profitable Miss Universe during trump's time is co owner and that generated a personal payday of two point three million dollars made possible by the Aguilara F- family at least in part who would later help set up the infamous twenty sixteen trump tower meeting. For. Officials seeking dirt on Clinton with Veselnitskaya who is now we know connected directly to the Kremlin. The record show that in two thousand thirteen to paget reported thirty one point six, million in gross receipts. That's the highest since at least the nineties allowing trump and his co owner NBC's split the profits of four point seven million by comparison trump and NBC lost two million on the deal the year before. Moscow and made three point eight million from the one the year after. So it appears the Russia one. Made money and made a lot of money a lot more money than it ever has before. So did. Russia overpaid trump for this event. Wonder why? In Two thousand, thirteen?
California to ban sales of new gas-powered cars in 2035
"Stay in California for this next story, but moved to climate change related news on that is about TheStreet CE Governor Gavin Newsom. Signing an executive order that will ban the sale of gasoline powered cars by 2035. That sounds like a pretty big deal. Yeah, it is a pretty big deal. California has kind of historically been a really leader and car emissions in the past, For example, they've set car emissions standards that have been stricter than the rest of the country. What ends up happening is that if you're a large your car manufacturer, you don't want to make one car for California that one car per bus of the country so they end up following California's kind of stricter regulations. California is also the word world's largest economy, said whatever they do tend to have a lot of sway. And you know, this is a kind of a big deal for California to jump out in front of this in the U. S. But Aah! If you look at the larger global contacts, several other countries in Europe At was Wells. China and India have also set similar goals of facing out gas powered cars in the next decade or two.
Why Are Some Animals Pets And Others Are Lunch?
"This is but why a podcast for curious kids from Vermont public radio I'm Jane Lindholm on this show we take your questions and find interesting people to answer them This episode though is a little bit different. We are tackling some questions without answers. This episode is a follow up to our cats dogs episodes. So if you haven't listened to those Ya, you might want to go back and listen to them before you listen to this one. In those two episodes, we answered all kinds of questions about our feline and Canine companions but that got us thinking, why do we have pets in the first place? Why are some animals farm animals and some are pets while others are wild and why do we eat animals? We're going to be spending some time thinking about those hard questions including the ones about which animals are okay to eat. So adults you may want to think about whether or not. This is an episode that's right for your kids or listen to it on your own first before you share it with them. Okay. Let's get started a few years ago I. Read a book for adults called some. We love some we hate some we eat why it's so hard to think straight about animals and it kind of blew my mind because it talked about all of these interesting ways we think about animals the same kind of animal a bunny for example, can be a wild animal, a pet animal, an animal that's used for medical testing or an animal we eat for dinner and how we feel about that bunny affects how we treat it. In American culture, we would never eat a dog dogs are pets. Eat A lot of hamburgers. However if you live in India, it's illegal in most parts of the country to kill a cow or to eat any kind of meat that comes from a cow like hamburger or steak. So, our ideas about animals have a lot to do with our religion, our culture, our beliefs, and where we live. We're going to explore some of those ideas today, and our guest is the author of that book. I mentioned how her Herzog is a professor of psychology at Western Carolina University psychology is the study of behavior and the brain. So why we do the things we do and how our behavior our actions are connected to our minds, how studies the relationships between humans and animals. Since. We talked about cats and dogs. In our previous two episodes I wanted how to explain a little bit about our relationship to our pets. Now people often say they are a dog person or I'm a cat person how says he's a dog person but right now he just has a cat people say that they keep pets because they get unconditional love from their pet. Mike Catt does not give me unconditional love. I'd give her unconditional love but she treats me like the guy that like opens the door and lets her out. And does what she wants to do. So what do you think it means that if somebody says their dog person like you did or a cat person given that you have a cat but you don't feel like your cat gives you that much love. But you know, do you have a sense of what it means for somebody to wear that badge of cat person or a dog person? Well there's been a ton of research on that and basically it's been fairly consistent. There's sort of consistent but fairly small differences, dog people and cat people, and so for example, dog people tend to be a little more extroverted. Cat people tend to be a little more introverted. Some studies have shown that cat people tend to be a little more open to new experience new ideas. On the other hand cat people tend to be a little more anxious. But I'm I'm not sure I. Think sometimes you just fall in love with an animal and sometimes it's a cat and sometimes it's a dog and I think people can switch back and forth and for those of you listening if those were new words for you extroverted and introverted extroverted kind of means somebody who's really bubbly and likes to talk to other people in really likes interacting with people and introverted people tend to be quieter maybe you just don't like the excitement never really loud room. You don't WanNa be the center of attention then you might be a more introverted person. Interestingly enough I think that also to some extent applies with two cats and dogs. Cats tend to be more introverted they tend to be Shire. Dogs tend to be more extroverted they They you know they tend to. Give you more in some cases you know sort of psychologically and and. Are More eager eager for social interaction. At least my dogs have always been not my dog. My dog is very introverted and he's not a people pleaser. He's more of a cat dog for yeah. That's interesting because it's very interesting because you do have like dogs and you do have dog like. I've I've I met a cat recently that was very dog doglike. She fell in love with me instantly wouldn't get out of my lap and eat dinner table. Yeah, that sounds very dog like.
Worldwide COVID-19 Cases Soar as Scientists Scramble for Response
"This week in America a grim and telling number. More than two hundred, thousand people have now died officially of Covid nineteen the House of Representatives held a moment of silence yesterday to acknowledge that painful milestone more people have been infected there than in any other country. Cases continue to climb states that suffered the most are recovering but infections and others are rising, which seemed to have been making progress in tackling the virus is against infections spreading fast and in Britain, and elsewhere there were expectations warnings of a second wave. I'm sorry to say that as in Spain and France and many other countries we've reached a perilous journey. With a vaccine still well down the line preparations are being made for an uncertain and tragic winter. And many governments have squandered precious time failing to prepare for what's to come. I think it's important to realize that each country experiences curb in its own way. Edward Car is the economists deputy editor. Europe. At the moment is going through a second wave cases in. India. Very high but overall it's been a consistent increase relentlessly such that they're announced note two million recorded cases day. And that reflects I think the both the nature of the disease and the insufficient grasp of the basic public health policy response that's required and are there any bright spots? Any positives to look too at this stage? Well, of course, in the background, which is hugely important has been fantastic and really impressive work by scientists and doctors, both to kind of work on the treatment protocols to find various medicines and to do research on vaccines. So that's all that's also entering in the background and it is beginning to have an effect on fatality rates, but there's a lot more to come on that. And what are the improvements on the medical side specifically. Well quite a lot of it's kind of really basic medicine. So when people first presented with what was thought to be essentially a respiratory illness, the focus was on the lungs people were put on ventilators in very large numbers vary eilly and that that wasn't always very good for them and didn't help them as much as was needed. Now it's realized this is a disease that attacks many organs in the body has stroke is a big problem that kids can suffer the heart damage and doctors a much better at keeping an eye on fluid levels on oxygen levels on treating the symptoms that might be harming various organs. So just in sheer sort of management of the disease that being big improvements. And then, of course, the medicines of and POPs one of the most important decks and methods zone is a is a very cheap steroid that can be bought and supplied in large quantities in that has for people who need oxygen and to need ventilation can lead to substantial declines in mortality of twenty to thirty percent. And the hope is that over the coming months, there'll be more medicines and. Vaccines which will bring that fatality rate down still more. and. What's your sort of overarching take on the the public health response. For the Public Health Response has been just much much more variable for a number of complex reasons. I think one problem political problem has been some differences on on what the priorities should be. Some countries have a ticket only favored keeping the economy open and Sweden's often held up as an example there possibly an idealized example because in fact, actually there were restrictions others have tried to keep the death rate down to zero by having a blanket. On the economy I personally think the both of those extremes are wrong. Sweden's actually had quite high death rate and quite a big blow to its economy compared with the neighboring countries, Finland Norway. Denmark. He's done some worse on both those measures. New Zealand has had a stunningly successful. Ability to keep the deaths right down but it's paid a very high price because it's shot the the whole country down and if you look at a country like Taiwan been even more successful on deaths and paid a much much smaller price in terms of the economy. And I think that that's because the countries that have been prepared to make trade offs and have had good public health can succeed in both reducing fatality rates and in keeping bits of the economy open. But what does that look like in detail? How should that that trade off actually be made you think? I think are two or three key components, and the first of those is a really granular testing and tracing operation. The second thing that's important is being sensible about the trade offs and then the third thing that's important is how to communicate this. I think people are quite goods in an emergency at taking difficult steps to change their lives but it's very hard to sustain and this will need to be sustained already need to stay for nine months but this'll go on for a long time yet before supplies all vaccines are plentiful enough for everybody to being vaccinated and even then the vaccines might not work that well or they're affect might be temporary so we're going to be living with this disease for a long time yet. I mean a lot of this advice was was starting to become clear even even months ago, and why do you think it is at different countries responses continue to be so divergent when the the best practice seem. To, be converging. I think that's a hard question to answer I. Think part of it was the enormous relief when countries have had a bad first wave came out of lockdown at the end of the spring, and in the summer. And there was a sense of cough people just thought thank goodness and governments having got through that desperate first phase of the disease themselves were relieved are never quite caught up. I mean the countries that have done this really really well, and I I think Taiwan is absolutely top of the class here have been good from the very beginning. and You perhaps feel at some other countries catching up in other places. In the United States, I think has to stand ups an example of this, the poor communication and the changes in rules reflect the politicization of the disease. There are too many people who have a stake in it working one way or another, and it's it's a tragedy. I think that the Centers for Disease Control and prevention which went into this pandemic as perhaps the most highly regarded public health body in the world has suffered from errors and poor leadership and denigration from the White House. That's that's just done nothing tool for the overrule effort. Are you hopeful are you more hopeful about the the post vaccine era and the experience today has made us all. Yes I think people, and I think people learn and learn more slowly than than baps they ought to but they do learn and you know I say the scientific response to this disease has been incredible and and that's something to feel cheerful about is just the even the best scientific response will take longer than people might like I did that time many people will suffer?
YouTube Launches TikTok Rival in the Only Market Where TikTok is Banned
"The first rule of facing off against a big competitor is find a market where you have an advantage. That's why Youtube chose India to test its new shorts announced last week. It's an inapt feature that lets users make fifteen second looped videos with graphic sound effects and music. Sound, familiar well, it's meant to compete with Tik Tok the short video app that seems to be everywhere these days everywhere except India that is we'll get to that in just a moment youtube is trying to set shorts apart from and court creators away from rival Tiktok in a few key ways, I video site is touting its reach more than two billion monthly users also shorts. The company has also been embroiled in a high profile, high stakes bidding war for its US operations, as well as a geopolitical dispute between president. Trump and China, but tick Tock keeps on ticking usage is still growing despite the APP setbacks last week, the company announced it had one hundred million active monthly users in Europe. It had already surpassed that number in the US. The Chinese version of tiktok called doyenne tripled its user base over the past two years. With so much competition the short form video market is crowded to say the least we'll just have to wait and see if you too short's ends up getting more than fifteen seconds.

For the Sake of His Name (Ezekiel 20:9)
"Ezekiel Chapter Twenty Verse Nine. God says, but I acted for the sake of my name. that it should not be per famed in the side of the nations among whom they lived. In who site I made myself known to them and bringing them out of the land of Egypt. Slimming read the first part of that verse again, and just answer this question as you hear it. Why is God doing what he's doing among his people? Why is God disciplining them judging them. And why is God even in the midst of his discipline judgment promising to restore them Why is he doing it Verse Nine Ezekiel Chapter Twenty. But I acted for the sake of my name. Same language in verse fourteen, I acted for the sake of mine name that it should not be profane in the side of the nations and who side brought them out. You get down verse twenty two in the same chapter I withheld my hand and acted for the sake of my name that it should not be profane in the side of the nations in whose side I had brought them out. Why is God doing what he is doing? Why has done what he has done? Why will do what he will do for the sake of his name? Oh listen closely like. This truth. Is. Fundamental in scripture and essential for understand the Christian. Life. Why has God done? What he is done? Why is God doing what he is doing? Not, just an Ezekiel but today, why will do what he will do in the future? Here's why for the sake of his name that's direct from his mouth God does all that he does ultimately for the sake of his own name. For the sake of his glory specifically among the nations. This is what we see from cover to cover in the Bible God is zealous for his name to be exalted among all the nations. In case, you're wondering what is that? Is that really true like just looked at the end of the Bible where the sovereign God of the universe has orchestrated all things to culminate in what? Every nation tribe tongue and people gathered around his throne seeing praises to his name. That's the whole point. That's the whole point of history, and that is the whole point of each one of our lives. We. Live. For the glory of God's name. That's that's what should drive us from the moment. We awake to consciousness in the morning and all throughout the day to the moment we fall asleep at night, and even that we're praying that God would be glorified as re, sleep? I we exist for the glory of God's name this show, Dr. every thing we do in our lives and our marriages and our families like how do I love my wife further glory of God's name Love My kids for the glory of God's name. How do I carry out my work whatever you do your job? How do you do it for the glory of God's name Sweat I Corinthians ten, thirty one says whatever you do whether you eat or drink like. Whatever you have for breakfast eat breakfast for the glory of God, do it all for the glory of God and so we pray God us our lives. Today we pray to glorify your name utilize every day to glorify your name, spend our lives for your namesake not for Our Name. God forgives for our pride. Forgive me for my pride. Forgive us for. Every desire to promote our own name for own name to be seen in this way or that way God rid all desire for the promotion of our names from us God help us to live for the rotation of your name alone glorify yourself and all that we do today we pray to point people to you. Tell people about you to reflect you with their lives helpless to run from sin for Your glory helps to love other people as ourselves for your. Glory helpless to do everything. We do today for your glory among the nations among all the peoples gotta replay for that hollowing of your name among all the nations show your great glory among the Khasi People in. India got almost a million of them. Many of them who are leaders and mosques leaders in the Muslim community God, We pray for the Causey people show your salvation through the name of Jesus among the causes people of India. We pray among every people group in the world throughout the world to the ends of the Earth among all the nations tribes, tugs, people got the name of Jesus to be known and enjoyed and exalted we pray. For the sake of your name we live today for the sake of your name we pray all these things for the sake of everything we do for the sake of your name and everything we do. We pray this in Jesus name. Are We Being Forced to Buy Stocks
"Last week in the insiders guide email newsletter I pointed out the expensive valuation of US stocks. Specifically I showed that the forward price to earnings ratio the P. E. based on earnings estimates over the next year was twenty, two point nine. That's three standard deviations above its average of sixteen times going back to two thousand, three at data from Ned Davis. Research. In reply to that email, Andrew wrote regarding stocks being expensive on a forward e true but there's no alternative. What do you do with bond yields near Zero and the vanguard total stock market? Index. Fund. Yielding two percent. By VPI, the vanguard total stock market ETF. JASA forwarded to me a paper by Bridgewater says, which I'll discuss in more detail later in this episode. I had a similar question from a plus member in the money for the rest of US plus member forums. He wrote. So the Fed signals that it wants to keep rates low for three more years. Canada's pension. Fund is reevaluating bond-holdings and you've got an army of small and large investors bidding up companies like Tesla and snowflake to absurdly hype. All this combined to make me think are we as individual investors now forced to buy equities? Is this the mother of all bubbles in which there's literally no other things suitable for purchase. There is a lot of speculation in stocks right now. Jim. Bianco Bianca Research pointed out that small traders are dominating the options market. Bear most of the trades right now and seventy five percent of that volume is an option contracts expire in two weeks. So short term bets. Look at South Korea and article from Bloomberg pointed out that day traders in South Korea have accounted for eighty seven and a half percent of the total value of stocks traded in the first part of September. You. Some men chief strategist at Samsung Securities said retail investors appear to be seeking short-term profits after hearing their next door neighbors earned lots of money from stocks after the March selloff. Receiving a similar situation in India. The Financial Times reports that the number of individual investor accounts rose twenty percent from the start of the year, the twenty, four million, and they point out that around the world, an influx of investors are investing in stocks for the first time. Are. We in a bubble? Is it a speculative frenzy? Are we forced to buy these stocks because there are no alternatives with also? One of the things I like to do investing is think about what's different this time what's unusual? What what doesn't fit the pattern? I had two instances of investing this past week where something didn't fit the pattern Lebron, I were driving up in the mountains of Montana and a small bear cub really bolted right in front of us no idea what it was running from. My son suggested he was running from the year twenty twenty. And then few days later at our front door, there were seven cows drinking water from the driveway eating our bushes. There are no cows around us. We live in an area that nobody keeps cows but there they were right in front of my house. Turns out. They had strayed from the National Forest, which is not very far some outfitters have grazing rights and drop off the cows and leave them there all summer pick them up come late October, and they had straight down because some of that newly cut barley fields, but it didn't fit the pattern. Cows at your front door. Don't fit the pattern. What's different now on investing front that could justify more expensive valuations for stocks. Well, for the first time, ever US interest rates are near zero from short term out to ten years. This is known as a flat yield curve, which is an unusual. We've had flat yield curves in the past. But it's flat near zero. There was a flat yield curve where ten treasury bonds and cash for yielding similar back from two thousand and five to two thousand seven. But yielding four percent. And from two thousand to two, thousand, two cash and tenure treasures were yielding five to six percent. Today, the ten year Treasury yield is zero point, six percent and cash is zero. The Federal Reserve intense to keep it that way. The recent policy statement suggests that they will keep their policy rate. What's known as the Fed funds rate near zero until labor market conditions have improved. The. Unemployment rate has dropped close to to to maximum employment and that inflation has risen to two percent is on track to moderately exceed two percent. They included their economic and rate projections and all, but four officials on the committee. Expect the Fed funds rate is still be near zero at the end of twenty, twenty three. Rates are low across the board. It is a different investment environment than we have ever faced before. And that's what this paper by bridgewater associates was about. It was titled Grappling With the New Reality of zero bond yields virtually everywhere. It was written by Bob Prince Greg Jensen Melissa fear, and Jim Haskell. I. Discussed Bridgewater Associates Founder Ray dallies views back in episode three, hundred changing world order in this paper bills off that. Before we continue let me pause and share some words from one of this week sponsors masterworks. I've shared on the show how low interest rates are on bonds and yields and cash about zero money has to be invested somewhere in preserving your wealth is as hard as it's ever been. That's where masterworks comes in. If you're looking to diversify out of the traditional public markets, then take a look at masterworks. They make blue chip art investing possible works by artists like Banksie, 'cause and Warhol. Art is a one point seven trillion dollar asset class that has performed better than s five hundred by one hundred and eighty percent between two thousand and two thousand eighteen according to Citibank.

Oh come on as a little something. Okay. It's based on the book correct. So So based on a true story. Yeah. It's based on the book and I really want the opportunity to be involved in in the writing and I really want the opportunity to do a TV show that shows. Addiction. How it really is Not just these destructive monsters that were sensitive and needy and that we you know it's not celebrity rehab wherever was puking in garbage cans and fighting, and you know that's a part of it but it's like you I don't think there's been I've been I've been watching Patrick Melrose. Apple to produce millions of AirPods in Vietnam amid pandemic
"More of apple supply chain may be leaving the Middle Kingdom. Apple insider says Peggy Tron. One of the Cupertino companies manufacturing partners is looking to build in Vietnam in a pretty big way. Like one billion dollars beg. Looking to target computing communication and consumer electronics. Plan, involves three phases. The first is a relatively small nineteen, million dollar initiative followed by four, hundred, eighty, one, million, dollar second-phase and five hundred, million dollars for a third phase all set to wrap up by twenty, twenty seven. Insider says Petron is the fourth of apple's manufacturing partners to make the move to Vietnam. Foxconn. And Tag all have manufacturing setup there. It's worth noting that while the apple manufacturer will be going to be at. Phnom. Petron won't necessarily be, making, anything for apple in Vietnam. That said the piece points out that apple has been encouraging suppliers to move production out of China to avoid costly tariffs. Apple's online store went live on the subcontinent today tech crunch says for the first time in more than twenty years since apple began its operations in India, the iphone maker has started selling its products directly to consumers in the world's second largest smartphone market. I don't WANNA get too far ahead of things but moves like this. Could make apple a profitable company?
Monica Royer, founder and CEO, Monica Plus Andy
"Hey Everyone Danielle. Here I'm excited to get into this episode with our guest and curly will be back next week today Monica royer joins us on skimmed from the couch. She is the founder and CEO of Monica Andy An organic baby and children's clothing company. Monica had the idea to launch her company literally from the hospital after she gave birth. Who've with the mission of being the most thoughtful children's brand ever created and as we'll get into entrepreneurship definitely runs in her family Monica. Thank you for joining us today welcomed skin from the couch Danielle. Thank you so much for having me. I'm super excited to be here. Thank you. So I just WanNa say that like literally I think one of the days after I had told our team that I. Was Pregnant I had a call with Monica and I was like only slightly panicked about the fact that I was maybe a first time mom and really had no clue what I was doing and was like everyone keeps telling me I need a lay at and I don't even know what that is and Google that and Monica was like such a calming presence and literally knows this case inside a now. Thank you so much what we're is really excited to welcome people into Motherhood, in new, parenthood. So congratulations to you. Thank you. So let's start with an easy question scam your resume. To actually take back to what you can't see on link to in, which is that I came from a very hardworking family and so at the age of twelve, my mom was the manager, the ultrasound department at Good Samaritan. Hospital in Downers Grove and she's like you're gonNA start volunteering. So she went an air sign me up I was working at the front desk outpatient registration and that at fourteen she was like job permit time. So we went I started stocking the shelves at now very defunct retail store of which I. Can't even remember the name but work ethic with something was really important to my parents and so I spent all the time before I graduated from college with all of my summer jobs in the hospital. So physical therapy like you name it I worked all around the hospital when University of Illinois in Champaign Urbana graduated and I immediately got a job in the pharmaceutical industry. So I spent the first decade doing absolutely nothing related to what I'm currently doing but I worked at both Pfizer and Novartis for that decade which was. Very different from currently in that I launched. Monica. Nandy officially in July of twenty fourteen. So now this is my new baby and what I've been most recently working on what's something that we can't Google about you or look up on Lincoln I originally wanted to be a marine biologist. nine or ten old I would have told you wanted to be a marine biologist terrified of the ocean look at seeing but being in it. So that was sort of a non starter, the marine biology career, but I remained totally obsessed with like orcas. Great White Sharks in my very favorite place to travel as the San Juan islands outside of Seattle, marine, biologist, and pharmaceutical industry. This is all very, very interesting. So we're GONNA get into your family. And the support system that you've built around you. But I when I was talking to you a few weeks ago, you were talking about your mom and how her story had such an impact on you tell us about what it was like growing up in your house. What kind of expectations were there? Yeah. So my mom is an immigrant from India. She moved here from India's her dad was dying of Emphysema and some money home when she was nineteen. Years old as I have always a revered both of my parents Andy I always say that will never win the lottery because we did the first time by the parents that we got. So a massive amount of respect for both of them. But my mom, there was something about the family that she came from her family was very matriarchal in in a society in India that was much the opposite in. So my grandfather had nine children altogether the first. Five of which were girls as in India, like at that time most people wanted boys but my grandfather really cherish having girls in he educated each of them like they were boys and so when my mom came here, she came here on sheer well of the education that she had received and so education was of the utmost importance specifically for my mom mom was the only person in her family to marry outside of her Indian cultures or a dad is. Know his ancestors from European background and so my brother and I were so close growing up because we were so different from everybody else we were between world instead of fitting into any world in particular and so I think that unique experience really shaped the adults that we became.
Interview with John David Washington
"John David Washington who is the protagonist in Christopher Nolan's tenant talks about the stunt work they challenged me greatly Is. Groundbreaking stunt stunt work towards Katelyn Jackson Speidel fight coordinator, and all the guys were working together Groundbreaking we this has never been done ever in cinematic history cinema history and. These moves the way we're we're operating So creating them creating what we were doing and kind of finding it together with me I'll never forget it I'm so extremely proud of because we can say. I can say it was a part of what they started. You know how action films can start to be a shot and performed. It's really exciting. There were many fantastic shooting locations. I enjoyed basically every. Pretty much every stop and we made a you know someone challenging and others if you get seasick probably more challenging for you but I had an incredible time in Indiana heights as well. Speaking of India jumping off or jumping over a balcony climbing over balcony from that high up was quite challenging and I I I had a different relationship with heights before that movie. But now I say we're closer heights and I I think we're going to be okay you know it was lowered for a second put. I. Loved Mumbai. Loved Him Fico slicing across the Mediterranean on a boat that I got Dr Looking as cool as possible in the coolest clothes ever provided by Jeffrey I? You know that's the dream. Know I, kind of like the old school of not using as much green screen. Here's John David Washington. gave us a huge advantage when when thinking about an event film you most we see green screen and most of us audience members can tell me we when they're good. We're not as distracted but when they're bad, it kind of takes it's it takes you out of it. Well, that's not the case Christopher Nolan and he might he might be arguably the best event filmmaker in the. Game. So as an as an actor, it's extremely as it's an extreme advantage being able to use the real elements around us that we can use for the performance and it goes to show for me for my in my opinion why he loves and appreciates performance. So well, because he knows that we will affect us in a different way and we'll connect to it even deeper. And turn the audience while at the same time because he's relying on the characters in the performance to take the audience to the journey of these wide, you know huge scale and mass of set piece worlds that he creates.

"Round to to india can easily see that the nationalism that lay behind brexit was a reaction to the perception power in brussels. Tell me a little bit about how has india or how has globalization affected india and is that related to the rise of the the b._j._p. Hindu nationalists so i would not relate to <hes> what's happening in india to globalization but more to the economic change that's happening. Many people are leaving their villages. The leaving their traditional communities going to open areas where they're often lost. They don't have they the social structures that they used to have and and often they pray to new ideologies new beliefs and the <hes> b._j._p. The as well as its <hes> carter is the r._s._s. is the underlying organization have been very successful at pushing the idea of in national community in the majoritarian and that is attractive for some people who have lost some of their roots going back to what you were talking about before how communities are being kind of torn apart by the forces of globalization. How do you see a successful community being reinvigorated. What's a good model. I know you talk about a particular neighborhood in chicago in your book. Are there other examples of communities that have rebuilt themselves. How do you empower. Are these communities to do that. Well lots of examples. Let me start first with the country which has an example of how it could work. This is a small country switzerland which <hes> pushes down powers on the principle of subsidiarity will be at the lowest level at which it can be exercised effectively so the idea is is that the national government will look after for example the national institutes of technology the cantons of which there are twenty six will determine what happens in the highschools schools why the municipalities of which there are nearly three thousand will look after the primary schools and kindergartens so this is trying to impart the local area with the most spas that they can possibly have and that to my mind is a first step in reviving communities to many of the pars for example educational ars have migrated up and pushing them back down would be a good thing but i think if you look at successful community revives of which there are a number the typically involve five element one good leadership to community engagement three. We've already talked about community. Empowerment fourth is funding to start revival. <hes> <hes> distressed communities without attack space..
