Seattle Kraken Name Dave Hakstol as Their First Head Coach

"The crack and have hired their first head coach? 52 year old Dave Hextall spent three plus years as Phillies head coach and most recently was an assistant for a young Toronto Maple Leafs team. Something crack and GM Ron Francis finds attractive. He's worked the last couple years in Toronto with a very young team and been a big part of, you know, they're sort of growth and progression towards having more and more success, so We think that all bodes well for him in this situation. "What was their what were their young lives? Like what were they doing to be able to pursue sport at the highest level? And so I felt like I ultimately had all these stories about these amazing women and in a way I felt like a bit of a caretaker of the history like it was up to me to share this and so the first right when I look back now was it terrible? Let's be honest. I cannot it right. I was a engineer by trade. I was very technical. It was just kind of, you know game synopsis and whatever but when I was on birth National team, I did take I wrote a lot of Diaries. I took a lot of sort of notes, but I also our team was forced to do log books. So every day you had to walk you right real you what you ate how you slept what your work it was like so that was also beneficial because in those log books I had written and I don't know if this is just a whole thing, but I wrote every single goal and how it went in and what I could have done differently, you know in a way to allow me to get better but also looking back at it. I see a lot of you know angst or frustration on a certain goal or maybe I was okay with it was a great shot and that really gave a lot of color to the situation and there was a lot of game tape that I had taped on VHS video, so I didn't have a VHS player. But so I had to transfer it all and then re watch the game tape. So in the meantime, I yep. Took some writing courses and tried to really put myself in the situation so that the reader felt like they were going through with me and not just telling the reader what to think or dead who these people were so I try not to pass any judgments on what you should feel or what you should think cuz everybody will be in a different space, but I wanted to put myself in the situation say you knew what was going on around me who were the influences who were these women and what really were their personalities and so well it it is not a story about them or say it is about the amazing influence that they had on my life and sort of our in team as we went forward. So the second question was it hard to write once I wrote from that perspective in that moment. Some of the stuff was really hard to write and I would go to bed like angry and mad all over again. Like I had just been either cut or I'd just been pulled from a game and my poor husband. I had to deal with that like I'd be cooking supper dive just be like angry at like certain coaches or this is like twenty years later and I think he just kind of rush to decide to be like, you know, what what game are you writing about today? Or but it is and it was hard even every time I'd go back and edit certain games. I would still be months later, you know, and so it's been very cathartic for me. I think had not written at all and not gone through it all so many times and now even reading it out loud to people it's made me more at peace with the decisions and why the decisions were made and and really ultimately the role that I played and ultimately just being proud of the situation that I was fortunate to walk in but also of the influence that I could have in those moments wow. Why did you choose to be a goalie? I know you played hockey cuz of your brother a white gold. So I just I really liked I mean ultimately just really like the equipment. I would watch Hockey Night in Canada and it just looks so cool. Like these guys just look like Warriors. I don't know. It was awesome. I used to sit in front of Hockey Night in Canada. And I would have I would like draw pictures of the goalies as they were playing in my youth and so I always kind of gravitated towards goaltending when we're playing street hockey. I just really liked it my brother tried a year of goaltending when he was nine years old. So that was sort of the family tradition is I wasn't allowed to watch become a goalie until I was nine. So I tried it when I was nine and my parents said, you know, once try it at the beginning you have to you have do it for the entire season, so my brother tried it four at the beginning of the season and he hame That and he had to like last through the entire season. So he was a kind of goalie. That would be like a Ron Hextall and come out just smashed you cuz he'd be angry at letting a goal in but when I tried it, I just love love to being sort of an Hockey while initially I gravitated the goal-tending because of what it was. I think stuck with goaltending because of it allowed me to play at the highest level and had I been a former right away when I was ten and one in fact, we had checking right away. And so I'm not sure that I would have lasted very long as a female playing in the AAA boys loop back in the day. But as a goaltender you could you could just kind of be in your net and not have to really worry about that. So a lot of my generation of women there's a lot of very strong goaltenders because we're kind of all forsook at situations like okay if you want to play with the guys like yeah, you can be the goalie so you don't get hit as often. So I've been told you know, whether it's a goalie in hockey or the dog catcher in baseball. That you you guys are a special breed of people, you know, I don't know what it is. I don't know. Yeah become managers.

Eyes are glazing over I'm going deep dive hockey, you've taken an era of hockey for a team that was just hated. And you've made them lovable by giving them a modern day muppet icon in gritty entertainment. I just drunk me. I it doesn't at this point. Yes, there's an expectation that we wanna see the seventy Sixers win. But even if they don't we're going to watch them week in week out because they're pretty darn good. "One of the more interesting things in that conversation with Keith Jones was discussion of the Philadelphia. Flyers alumni Elliott. You have a couple of thoughts on that. Do. The key thing is the teeth is correct about is that Ron Hextall lost a job because the team wasn't playing well vite their reasons why you become vulnerable. If you get to that point. And the stuffy talked about about the alumni I've heard that was a big deal, and I'm surprised because you'd think of Ron Hextall he embodies what the flyers were. I mean, he was the fighting goalie and goalscoring goal the goal. Well, I remember sometimes the fights more than the goal scoring. But that's who he was like, you think if anybody would fit the flyer mold and be what they are supposed to be it would be Ron Hextall. But you know, there were a few moves over the. And you talked about the John paddock one. There was Neil. Little a longtime flyer scout who was let go in two thousand fifteen. There was Joe Mullen who was let go assistant coach in two thousand seventeen and they also have a scout. There named Al hill who is still employed by the team, but he was demoted from what I understand all of those changes upset the people in the organization who were flyer alumni. I don't know if they were deserved or not. But they just didn't like that they happened or the way they were handled or something about it bothered them. And that to me is the weirdest part of the story because you would think that Ron Hextall would fit in seamlessly with the flyer alumni, but the same complaints is, you know, existed with Bob Gainey in Montreal and Gainey was as Canadians as it gets captain of the team one of their best players. But there were people who complained he didn't treat the alumni. Very well and his last time as Canadians general manager. So it's not why Hextall was fired. And I understand he was very surprised by it. But it sounds like it was very much an issue which team does it the best in your estimate. I've always said the Canadians. Do it really well, but the one thing about the flyers. It's interesting in the whole Lindros thing in Paul home was a guy who probably have the most to do with putting that back together. There were people who ripped Ed Snider for the way he handled it, and that's fine. But the one thing a lot of Ed Snyder's supporters said was there is nobody who treats former flyers better than Ed Snider does Keith Primo once told me story that when he was told by a doctor you can't play anymore..

"And was not taking advice and direction from above. And he may felt that he was the top of the chain. And clearly he was not. And I wonder how much that played into it. That's all well and good. If you have that type of approach as a manager if you win. Yes. But if you're not winning, and what you've been describing to people that who at least are having conversations with because of their position within the organization is not coming to fruition. Then you have to answer the bell. And if you're above rod Hextall in this situation that being Paul home grin or Dave Scott from Comcast you're looking for results now based. Where Ron is was in his tenure with the flyers. And those results were not coming. And I believe I'm a business perspective to style of play was not endearing the flyers to their own fans, and to those that are working hard in the business to try to keep people interested, and I think all of those things played a role in what happened is, you know, Keith the flyers are very proud alumni edge Neider he had a way once a flyer always a flyer. If you try hard for organization, we will always take care of you. Are you surprised to see one proud flyer Paul Hong grin and another one Ron Hextall and the relationship this way? I would say, yes, I'm surprised, but I'm not I'm not a right word for it. When I get more information on it. I'm not overly surprised about it. Because. All home grin and Bob Clark. Who of course, proceeded Homer are two of the proudest flyer. Alums that there is and every day they kind of live and die by the orange and black and they pass it on to anyone who played for them while they're in charge Homer was assistant general manager. And I when I was there Clark was the general manager. And you knew you're a flyer when you arrived, and when you put that uniform on those guys exemplified that did the same. And that's what makes it really surprising, but Homer always had great respect for Bob Clark. And even when Homer took over for Clarke Clark was still the guy and when Ron took over for Homer. It sounds like Homer was not treated with the same regard. And I do believe that that plays into it in some aspect. Dave says he's not looking over. His shoulder. Should he be? That's an interesting one. I saw Gord Murphy. Yes. Let go Chris prior to it. Yeah. And Chris prior is well when I think back to one of my dear friends and another flyer for life in Craig Baru. And when he was told the John paddock would no longer be the assistant coach, and that from Ron Exxon told that Gordon Murphy would be taking over to run the d-. It was the beginning of the end for creek. John paddock was terrific with the defense. And I was a great asset for ruby to have a veteran guy who had pretty much done at all coming in and helping him run really the most important position on a hockey team. And that's the defense. So when I heard that Gordon Murphy was released today. I was not shocked by that for Dave. Textile? I think he's going to at least in the near term have an opportunity and some of that opportunity will be based upon when the new general managers hired, which I believe will be sooner rather than later. And if that general manager has his guy that's available at this time. And that's kind of what it's gonna come down to and Dave axed all if in fact, he stays for the rest of the season is going to have to do a heck of a job. His team is going to have to play more passionately, and they're going to have to get on a run and he's done it before with them. So it's not out of the realm the possibility, and he is a good head coach high believe he'll get at least some chance to do that. And the longer it takes for the new general manager to be named a more opportunity. He will get based upon the press release that I saw today Dave hack stole was involved and the release. Using of Gordon earthy, and that was made clear in the press release. So that's encouraging of I'm fan of data stall. And I am but a lot of the fans aren't so he's got a big job to do..

"Of course, six nothing game. After two periods homegrown goes into the dressing room says this is not acceptable for the flyers. And they came out in the third period. And they fought. Contract now. I should say Kennedy run by Simmons. And now ran racing to the Ray every this challenging the Opie saying. Referee going to try to keep that separate. He will be able to do away. They go. His his point as every. His way. As trading with Alexi. For sure. I just thought about that watching that game. So I was surprised, but I wasn't surprised if you understand what I mean, the unique thing about this. We're used to coaches getting fired midseason then happens all the time side of last year happens every year in hockey happens every season seldom if ever do see general managers dismissed during the season that happens at the end of the year at the wrap up. That's it for the general manager. It's new direction. That's leaves me asking questions about this one. How long was this disgust had been going on for a while? The question becomes why? Then why on that Monday? Did it happen? Because it was at a crisis point, it's obvious that look there was a philosophical divide there. There was Ron Hextall stay the course stay the course stay the course were not moving from. The course we're not giving up our prospects were staying the course, and there was Paul homegrown, and Dave Scott. And for those of you don't know Scott is kind of psalm up front for the first time at the media conference. He's the Comcast spectacled chairman and CEO and their sidewise. I just filled in the best interests of the organization. It was time to look for new voice can with the different mindset can can push push the team to the next level. Just want to add on really just Sam quickly to because we talked in length about this decision. And for me, I sort of build it down to one question. You know, I think that we can do better as a team now not two years or three years from now. But now, and I think that answer was yes. And there is a comparison to Edmonton. Because Edmunds, and we talked about why did they change? Todd McLellan for Ken Hitchcock because they looked at their division and said nobody is running away with this our division is not that good. We can still save our season. And my guess is these Scott Owen wherever else was on their side looked at the metropolitan this year say nobody is running away with this. Pittsburgh's coming back Washington's getting going Columbus wins games. But still you're not terrified by anybody there. And you're saying we can still do this. And that says to me too that they believe that the problem was as much what they thought was Ron Hextall intransigents as opposed Dave Hextall's coaching. So the bizarre thing about that is we normally see the effects on the ice when a coach is dismissed, and that's obvious. The coach has the hands on. With the player. There's that kind of relationships you understand how the product changes on the ice when the coach get switched. The general managers one step removed from that sure he can play around the chess pieces and bring in new players an exit players as well. But generally when there's a general manager dismiss you don't see the effects right away on the ice. Now. There was more of a push from the Philadelphia fires next game. All be it. It wasn't a loss against the Ottawa Senators right away. You know, you had Dale we, you know, fighting Ben Harper, and you saw more of a push from the Philadelphia. Flyers ended up losing on a beautiful met Shane goal late in the third period. But still there was that type of fact are we to read into this, then whomever, the flyers higher as their next general manager that will be someone who aggressively moves bodies out somebody who has to present a plan. Absolutely. You're not hiring more of the scene. Now, it's hard to make a trade in this league..

"And when you look at when you look at stall getting gas a lot of people also brought up that the fires don't even play the style hockey that the fans enjoy the fans have always kind of, you know, gotten around and enjoyed and call each other. Where the Phillies scumbags, we just dummy people fighting. I mean, they lost Toronto six nothing. We could go. There wasn't one. They didn't have a penalty. I mean what what flyers fan is sitting around watching a and could ever remember a flyers team in the past getting blown out? Six nothing, and they're not being a fight or something pushing someone getting them getting a minor penalty. So that was what seems like it was almost the last job. Just a team that doesn't look inspired. Now is that the coach you could say, yes, I mean a lot of people point to him. But when you when I look at flyers fans that hate that hate their head coach so much like, man. This is good, and yeah, they're not they're they're not living up to their expectations and where they could be in the standing, but they don't have goaltending. So what coach is going to be out there and get a team to win when they can't get any big saves. So it goes back to players. I know where a player first podcast, but you still see, you know, Hextall gone next some point hacksaw gone and hope Paul home did say that whoever gets hired as GM Hextall's fate is in his hands is that I don't really wanna be. I don't wanna say it's in his hands. But mitt is. So we're going to see what happens with the the search for GM going on. I think homegoods just passing the buck basically to whoever the next GM is obviously gonna to fight axed. All I mean, every GM. Wants his own coach. I can't imagine whoever they bring is going to say I want I'm gonna keep this guy hired by the previous regime that just making somebody else do the journey where you mentioned the goal. I mean, we talk about this. What's for three years? We've been doing this podcast almost and I feel like we've been talking about flyers goalies for the last three fucking years. This is there on the fifth goal already this season. Only two teams in any gel history have used five goals in the first twenty five games of the season eighty nine penguins in the sixth rashes. So, you know, they their goalies out the every year there are going to be signed. I mean, they coulda had Yaroslava lack Curtis mcelhinney was on waivers. They just can't seem to ever win. The right goalies. Five goals in twenty five games. Not good. He was there. Four and a half years. Total only made the playoffs twice Phillies. The city with expectations. They want to be in the playoffs every year. They should be a contender. But xed all groomed him. They brought him in. And it just wasn't a success. It's going to be interesting to see what they do next. But again as long as they don't have a goaltender, man. That's just just gonna be this kind of not laughing..

We'll get to the same huge ten wins in a row. I think they've only cover the puck by twice in those ten games, but still making money elsewhere. But the big news since I last show Ronnie Hextall shit canned as the general manager of the Philadelphia. Flyers people thought it was going to be the coach to go. I was the GM. So would say you biz jut take on the old fire and hit. I mean, I'll say this. I was a little shocked that he went before before the head coach. And the reason I say that is because like I feel like David symbol the pretty good roster. Like you go down there officers. Ru Turia Vora check connect knee Simmons like their top six are very good. They got some decent bottom. Six Jordan wheels guy play with. I think he's a really good third line center. Their back ends good. I mean, I mean the one the one issue in goal. I mean that's been like forever for Philadelphia Flyers. I just I like I said I'm just shocked that it wasn't the coach I and that's nothing against him. But just like I mean, it's his job to to get the boys going. But hey, I think I think the organization wanted to shake things up a little bit maybe to get the boys going. But then fuck man, they followed up with a brutal loss to Ottawa who came in there, and then and shook him up. Yeah. That was I mean, you know, Ron hacksaw sitting there. He's loving that. Blowing a lead against the senators losing four three busy. I think you're right. I mean, I think a lot of people thought hack school would be gone before Ron Hextall was. I mean in a sense he it was up to Hextall. He wanted to get rid of him. He could of but he really stuck to his guns. He yet a lot of trust in in Dave hack, stall. And that turned out to be. I mean, he's probably looking at right now, if I'd gotten rid of him, I would at least still have my job in other years, she if we end up getting into the playoffs, but you you said it before and we've said it on this on this podcast. It's it's goaltending. Ironically, Ron Hextall one of the great fires goalies shadow to winning the const my for playoff MVP when he didn't win the Stanley Cup. A goalie ended up not having a goal is what ended up really kind of killing him. And they haven't had one in thirty five years. It seems like and because of that it's just a team that never has consistency. You can't win in the NHL without a goal. You can't win and major league baseball pitching. And the NFL though to quarterback. It's it's the one key position that if you don't have it you may win some games on offense. You may get into the playoffs. But you're never going to win the Cup. You're never going to get it done. You know win that ultimate goal..

"So they've been very up and down Calgary fourteen nine and one. I think the key for Calgary is going to be the gold sending now David Riddick has come in. And then great, and he'd be my guy. I would continue to roll with David Riddick. Now, they had the back to back. I believe Smith played in the game last night. But I haven't had a chance to double check that. But the bottom line is that. If Mike Smith is not going to respond, David miniature your is your goal, and he's played very very well. He's at nine thirty save percentage. Screw twelve games. You have to have goaltending this leak the Calgary Flames. They've got terrific young players there. Chuck drill Monaghan Lynn home. I mean, the defense which you're down on Brody. And and those guys. It just going to be about the goaltending is the goaltending going to be good enough. And there were two week division. So dateable. Absolutely. It's the stable for Colorado and have a good roster. They just need to get good. Goaltending Riddick continues to do that for them. They'll be fine. Yeah. Smith twenty five saves in the six to one victory for hours on last night. Haywood w says, do you see the Rangers picking up another play via trade to add a veteran presence with the kids? I don't think that's really where they're at. No. I agree. I think that they're like just talked about they have embraced the idea of playing the young players and to a certain degree. It's been pretty successful so far now they've won four shootouts. Therefore, no, knowing the shootout, we talked about that with buffalo. Right. So I mean, that's a plus they've found ways to win those games you take those points away. I think you almost you're almost of the situation where you have to pay for future production as opposed how it used to be where you pay for what a guy has done and tried a kind of a level of of production. Because if you wait you end up signing those guys much later in there, you know, at twenty six twenty seven. Now. Now, you're doing an year veal, and you're you're not getting the best eight years of their careers. You're getting you know, maybe three good years, then try to okay years, maybe three years where he meant to think about buying the guy out. So in in the in the case of the Matthews, who's obviously he's gonna get his money, and you know, Barner or and the end or I think you'd like to try to sign those guys for the eight years if you can just because you're getting their best probably their best years of their career. But the problem is in Toronto's case they've got to MIR assigned to a big deal. And they've got the, you know, three really high in young. It's just hard to hard to do the mass as yeah, it's hard to it's hard to do the stuff in a vacuum. Now for sure yeah. Yeah. Rick carpenter L. Of course, you know, him from the athletic. You should follow him on Twitter. He's a great follow for anybody out there looking for some hockey knowledge. I don't know if you saw this tweet from a couple of days ago, maybe yesterday says that the NHL quarter Mark nine of the top fifteen point scores are. Twenty three or younger, including each of the top four rotten file mcdavid McKinnon martyr. Overall, this blows me away forty six point four percent of players to appear in at least one game this season or twenty five or younger. I mean, that's what this league is about. And so these guys gonna wanna get paid. You know what I mean they're carrying teams right now. Yeah. And I think you here's another guy that's going to be interesting grading point in tamp down. I mean, he's probably been their best players. Certainly there amongst most productive players with future off. And what are you gonna pay? Brayden point of his Tampa Bay Lightning and some point down the road of you know, you have rent and then McKinnon, and Colorado, and then, you know, you pay McKinnon you're going to have to pay rent and at some point. So until you see how it's played out there with dry file mcdavid. Those guys are on big big contracts. And that team is really, you know, it's all good when the team is winning. But the team is losing then it's you know, it's more. It's more problematic. Obviously. But it's it's it's amazing. This league is gone young. It's it's a fast league now. And if you can't keep up, you know, you're you're in trouble. And that's the way I look at team like Saint Louis who, you know? Here's the staff where he died at this time last year the blues leading the league in points. They were a top the National Hockey League standings as we discuss we talked today. Your later are thirtieth out of thirty one teams. And I think Saint Louis has their hesitation to embrace the young talented players in their group and push them forward in their lineup has been part of their problem. Yeah. So you know, literally is absolutely about youth. That's absolutely that speed right now. And if you don't have those things in your line of going for you, you're probably looking up, but a lot of things. All right. Let's do a few tweets before. I let you go cool. Okay. All right. Sam has says gentlemen, hope you both had a wonderful. Thanks. Giving day with your loved ones looking at the Western Conference standings. I'm surprised to see Calgary is I in the Pacific Division, is that sustainable do. You think San Jose Vegas or Anaheim will rise to the top? I like San Jose's team still, but they've been so inconsistent. I mean that a nice little run. But really at the end of the day when you're looking at there. Yeah. They're twelve eighty four which means a twelve and twelve right, right? And they both board games and overtime..

"But I mean, heck I'm really happy for him because that's a die hard fan base up there. We know the sports history of that franchise. But hey, things are great in buffalo right now. The bills have won a couple on a row or say here we're role in. I mean. Hey, everybody's out on Chippewa while having a good time right now, you know, when you talk about what a sport needs and very seldom does a sports say we need the buffalo market. But the NHL does. I mean, if you take a look at the Stanley Cup final ratings. It's always a last year. You know, it's it's Vegas going up against Washington. So we are Washington. Be number one Vegas will be number two buffalo be three of Buffalo's always heard sometimes second depending on what the Stanley Cup. Final matchup is they love hockey, they hunger for it to the longtime since they've had a run that two thousand and six six cups should have been. There is no offense to Peter lobby letting the hurricanes, but the the sabers were so the net conference final I think they would be ten in the Stanley Cup. So that was that should have been there championship. They still think about the whole goal against Dallas ninety nine. Now. I'm not talking about Cup for this team. But if they can start moving in that direction, they'll be excited you mentioned Winnipeg is one of the teams that buffalo beat during this. Streak. I mean Patrick line. Aiming this is this is sick. Now what he's been able to accomplish Ellison. It's kind of a wacky stat. But still I player in NHL history to record a hat trick in three different countries in the same season. That's pretty good. I like that. It's three three hat tricks before the twenty third game. Which is something you alluded to on Twitter bossy did four times, but still different era of hockey. But. Listen, we had a conversation back when they when him and Matthews were rookies of and who should be the call to trophy winner. And you said you always leaned towards the center as opposed to a winger. But I say for a winger, I mean, this kids just a flat out star. And as just been a joy to watch while listen he could score. I mean, there's no question. He's Alex Ovechkin two point. Oh, I guess right. If there is such a thing, he's very similar that he's a big physical guy. Got a great relief. He scores with similar areas Lovie, and you know, the funny thing is this guy started off season. And he was a little bit in the slalom people are wondering what's up usually under the goals score?.

"I mean, listen they've been riding away right now in this league. There is not a lot of difference between these teams now we have power more than I've ever seen it. This league for a long time and just for example in the metropolitan division from the capitals at the one spot the devils of the eight there's eight points between them so everybody is is kind of right on top charter. And you know, and the same can be said the divisions and throughout the the Buffalo Sabres or finding a way to win those games. And that's great for them. They have a franchise player Jack Eichel who was found. Someone in Jeff Skinner that he has great chemistry with your skin has just the test. Gators always been a really talented guy. We're talking to Johnny McClain who was coaching Carolina was an assistant Carolina. And he was really impressed with Jeff scanner is just lost. You know, he just said this guy's really talented guy. And he gets to go to buffalo and play with a high end player and I call and he's got eighteen goals now in twenty four games. And I think in sixteen of those of come in the last seventeen games or something some crazy number like that. So they're getting they're getting enough scoring, you know. Golly that's come in. And he's a franchise. Pence men, but he you know, he's a rookie. But he gives them someone. Now, that's another really high end talented player. Rasmi Landon is I think it's certainly a you know, a tough re defenseman on teams in the league. So he's he joins with you know, with Ali. And they've got a couple of veterans back there. They added those veterans than the blues trade with a wily that gives them a deeper roster to begin with. They went out and got Carter Hutton who has come in and played very well, so far he's a veteran guy. That's giving them kinda the belief that they could win games, and Linus ullmark is played. Well, when he's as a young guy who they see my either die down the road. So listen, is it sustainable? No. It's not sustainable to continue to win sixteen to come back and games and win. Everyone goal game win all the shoot outs. It went all these overtime games. But the Buffalo Sabres through twenty four games. So put themselves in a great position to pay perhaps the ploughs this year. And I think they're going to be a team that they're feeling it right now. And if they can stay healthy. And if they continue to get decent goaltending. They're going to be a team. It's just gonna be a. Competitive team and hard to play like, you know, like a lot of teams in this league. Like, I said, I mean, there's just not a lot of different even the bottom one little change or something all of a sudden, they could be I'm not I'm not trying to pour cold water on it. A matter of fact, I joke around with Michael Rapaport who's our stat guy with the Rangers. And he sends out notes before every game. You know, who he is? You see him at the garden and one of the I joke around with him because he always gives a stat. Like when the Rangers. I haven't looked at today's yet. But just for sake of argument, you know, it'll be Rangers and senators, you know, fourteen of the last twenty meetings of a decided by one goal. I mean, you could say that about every matchup as the Rangers. Every game is decided by one goal or two goals because of an empty net. I mean, very seldom no matter how bad a team that you're covering is that you're sitting there with the game already being decided going into the third period that that's how the sport is. But you're right. The positive of it is they in nine straight games against some pretty pretty good. Opponents that they they've been the one to figure out a way to get that last goal. And that's that says something about a team they went in. They went into Winnipeg in Minnesota on back to back night. That's right. That's that's the win those games. And in Minnesota the second of the back to back they were down to nothing and rallying went. Absolutely. So you know, that to me was an eye opener because that is a hard double these days to go on and play those two teams. Yeah. And I gotta give a lot of credit. So we'll see how it goes..

"And you know, the other thing too is that in Philadelphia now, you know, done it when we were growing up tonight or on the flyers. And like when the old man was happy things were good. And when the old ban wasn't happy things got changed, and that's the way work, and and now with Mr. Snider passed away a couple of years ago, and it's kind of a corporate group. You know, the Comcast group that owns the flyers. I'm not exactly sure we'd making the decision, you know there. It's a it's more of a corporate structure. I know Paul homeland is he's the guy that eventually his name gets on the, you know, the release, but you know, how much input comes from. The corporate management structure above him. You know, and how much they have to say in this. So the bottom line is for the flyers. They've got to play better. They've got to figure out their goaltending situation. They've got a combination of some some veteran players that have been playing very very well. And some young players, you know, that they feel can be really good players. So the window for that all gnashing, you know closure. Ruse best years. Jacob four checks best years, even James van ravens cycle. They recently signed as a free agent and was injured for a good part of the season. I mean will they jive with when you know, I've improved RAF is at his best. Then maybe Carter heart becomes the goalie down the road. I don't know still. I mean, that's the window. Can you get all those things at the same window? I'm not sure, but they and the one other thing too is they don't really and it's not a fighting league anymore. We know that there's there's not those types of players, but in Philadelphia, I think they do like to have their team nasty and hard to play against and the flyers have had to fight. At the team this year to fighting majors and they've only come in the last couple of games. And again, not that you're gonna turn your team into the seventy five broad street bullies. But you know, there might be a sense in Philly. Like, hey, we have you know, that's where we are. We have to be a little bit harder to play against and we aren't right now. So there's a lot of things I think the problem what do it? I'll be very curious to see what happens. I didn't think they've axles days along there without Ron Hextall. And there is there is a place in Philly that could go out and could afford to make a deal with Joel when Ville the bringing him good point as well. That's a very good point on. They have the money to do it. Now, it's interesting because you're going to let go of both of them today if you wanted to so we'll see if it's just a reprieve until they can get something worked out with Joel or whether he thinks or the organization believes that hack stall will will be given a couple of weeks to maybe prove that he deserves to stay. But if they had a problem with say Hextall, not firing hack stall that I would think both of. I'm would have gone today. So we'll see if he could take the opportunity. Yeah. It's a little strange. I agree with you. I think it's odd because I think there has been some push especially because we've seen in the last several weeks as I mentioned, the Oilers made to change the things may change the hawks may changed teams. But making changes the blues meta change. It seems like that's the move that comes first. And if nothing else comes in tandem, but in this case suppliers have made this decision. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out over the next several them that should be interesting. All right from the negative to the positive Buffalo Sabres on an amazing run nine game winning streak. But if you dig a little deeper EJ eight of the nine games decided by one goal five of the nine games in shootout or overtime. So is this team that's coming together? And is a legitimate force in the National Hockey League. Or is this a team that you know has been quite fortunate during this nine game run..

"It could easily be me off and on I'm often on death's door Mollison. But then you then you rally your known to rally rally, which is very alternative alternative. Yeah. That or death and believe me, we'll all scrape up enough strength try to avoid that whenever we can. Yeah. Well death in firing. Those are the two things that nobody wants to have happened to them in Ron extol is out in Philly, creative differences for lack of a better phrase. You're reading a statement, they just didn't seem to philosophically believe in the same thing's going forward with the organization. Do you know what those philosophies were? Well, no, I don't. But I would I would speculate on a couple of things I think that, you know, the flyers are underachieving so far this year, you know, their their goal differential is a minus thirteen which is in great. They're they're not been very good at home. They're five six one at hall. Call those losses have been ugly. I was there for their home opener against San Jose. When they got blown out in that game. And it wasn't the only time that they had been blown out on home ice. And they just had an embarrassing loss in buffalo that an embarrassing loss in Toronto. They did actually have a win against the Rangers on black Friday and played well in that game could have been a lot more one sided if it hadn't been for Henry. Plan. So well, so I mean, there's underachievement of there's probably some consternation within the flyers management structure about the future of their head coach, Dave axed, all we've seen a lot of we've seen several coaches moved out ready this year. So there's probably something that we're going to Asian somewhere along the line that probably feel like maybe they need a coaching change or something different day or so that could be something. Also, the new I think during Ronnie's tenure there. He's been very of. He's been very patient, and he's tried to develop as young players, and that's very commendable. And you know, I think there were probably some that are saying, okay. You know what we have goalie injuries? Let's get Carter heart from the minors, regardless of has been just played very average there. And let's elevate them to the National Hockey League level. And I think Ronnie's probably quite back against that. He's fought back. It's the coaching change. But the one thing I would say about, you know, Ron Hextall tenure which has been I would be critical for sure is that if you were gonna look to have a stop gap goaltending group between the time you draft in heart. And when you feel he's going to be ready, and really it's gonna be a while. You had to do better than Brian Elliott, and Calvin Pickard and Michael noisier. There's been a number of goals that have been available over the last couple of years. They signed Ryan Elliott after Brian Elliott, basically was a key element in the Calgary. Flames being eliminated in the playoffs in that particular year. Michael waiver hasn't been able to stay healthy for more than a couple of weeks at a time Calvin Pickard they picked up off waivers. You know, it just seems like they haven't been able to find any stability goal during his tenure. And I think that is another thing that I would say the other stuff we could argue. I don't think we could argue about that. I think that there have been other goals that have been available that would have been better than what they've come up with. And so that and that really to me is one of their biggest problems. There's just no confidence in the Philadelphia. And it makes sense to me everything that you say and the patients we've talked about it here on the show on how they weren't gonna rush heart up. They weren't gonna rush some of their younger players up for a run last year. Even though they worry. To make the playoffs or cosmetically to to soothe any problems this year that there was patients usually it's the general manager. That's chea-. It's the organization that's preaching patients. It seems like it might have been the other way around maybe the organizations Chiba, Iran. Xbox had the philosophy of I want to be patient it usually works the other way around right? I mean, he he was I guess thinking he had all the time in the world and time ran out. Yeah..

"They don't have a lot of guys kind of in the middle there and so the window for the group with those high end guys doing what they do at their best is is short it's going to be a window that's going to change where those guys are going to be less productive the younger guys going to be more productive but i think they are really in a great window right now if they can clean up one or two things first of all they need to get a better goal tender and sad that settle and that's not easy to do they're waiting for carter heart but i don't think that he's gonna be the answer next year or maybe even a year after that he's a young goaltender and ron hextall has been very smart in the idea of really wanting to be patient with his young players so that leaves you go back to brian elliott down the roadway there's michael wehr fit in peterborough for free agent but they don't really it doesn't look like they have any confidence in him to be the guy there so how do they feel that goaltending spot for now until where they have a guy that they can win with until carl hart get there so that's the the big question and the second thing is they've got a clean out some of the back end of their group defensively and then try to upgrade that i mean radcow gutis i mean he's trying hard as you can but boy he was just terrible yesterday especially late in the second period and you know so they've got to upgrade they've got they've got pro ralph you so they're clear number one they've got gossip spare power play guy and he's a puck mover he's an offensive guy he's not a great his own but those are the things he does really well they've got santa heim was part of their group was a young guy they've got hockey's a young group young guy that's part of that group they've got young guys that are that are moving along they're going to help them there they need to add a veteran or two on the back that's an upgrade over some of the veterans they have their now so.
