It started along the roadway in prompted the evacuation of hikers and bikers in Glenwood Canyon. Some nearby residents have now been evacuated. Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard lead team to victory over Philadelphia Sixers

"About Damian Lillard? The All Star Guard, had 51 points and seven assists. Help Portland defeat Philly 1 24 to 1 21 Portland's now just 1/2 game back. Of the eighth seed in the Western Conference. And unless if your son's fan of the sons they got a victory today, they're still undefeated inside the bubble or unless if your grizzly span or you still give this the Spurs a puncher's chance. And you have the pelicans and the Kings now eliminated If you just like basketball and let's say you don't have a dog in that fight. You want to see Portland get to the embassy playoffs and meet up with the Lakers in the first round. I could understand why some wanted to seize Einen. But now a Zion and the pelicans are even coming close to get in that 89 playing game. The team that you want to see the team that could be most dangerous are the Portland Trail Blazers.

"I think because the players have a heightened confidence that they are a legitimate playoff team with Zion Williamson I think that their sense of urgency on the defensive end change I don't think it was I on defense that helped them I think Zion's offense and the confidence. It came with them. Help them defensively now by the numbers. Only two things really changed I thought were significant. They didn't send teams. That free throw line is much and I know for fact. That's something that says. Delic their assistant coach. Who does their defense had been pushing all year? Quick Fouling people and I. Don't this I couldn't figure out when I watched film on the court, but three point defense got a lot better. They didn't give up as many threes. Teams shot at poorly. That may be luck of the draw as much as anything. They still don't get back even with. They didn't get back over any stretch of the season they gave up transition points. Give up a ton of points in the paint They don't particularly force a lot of turnovers. But they did do a very good job of limiting the three and they quit Fowley, but we're. They really changed. Ziona was on the offensive end of the floor, so they always played at a fast pace. They were among the leaders top four team in. I think it fast. Break points all year long they shoot a lot of threes and make a lot of threes at didn't change pretty much the entire year, but they had no interior presence they were. You know well into the bottom half of the league points in the paint well into the bottom half of the League and get into the free. Throw Line now Zion comes and. And for the stretch they have him all of a sudden. They're third in the League points in the pain and seventh in the League and free throw attempts, and they're still shooting a lot of threes, making them, and so everything with them change because of that, and here's the other stretch, and you know the Zach from history when you're getting to the free, throw line more. And you're attacking the paint more you know which means you're shooting percentage. Go Up, just regular shooting percentage that means your defense can get set particularly going to the free throw line, and that helps your defense because you're not in transition as much where we know they're terrible. So coach I'm used to being the one on my podcast, like makes the big statistical reveal and like his done all the research like no, here's the actual thing that's happening and bring you on Eddie Lord. I don't have anything left to say. Let me say this a you just hit it. I think Zion's biggest contribution to their defense has been his offense and I think it's not just. When you score more when you get to ally more new score more, you get to set your defense and they're doing both of those things. Much more was I- on on the floor. They're also of rebounding at an absolutely colossal rate. Because I'll williamson apparently can jump four times in the span that takes normal basketball players to jump once, and is like some cross between Moses Malone and like Dominique, Wilkins or something on the offensive glass. In terms of why they're defense, I think that's actually the biggest reason. Why defended the two biggest reasons? Our defenses better to me with him on the floor is number one. Their offense number two luck because if you look at their shots. Their second to worst next to worst in opponent shots at the basket like you try to prevent opponents from shooting at the basket. The PELICANS do not do that and they do not do that any better or worse. Zion on the floor. They're still terrible at it. They're shot. Distribution allowed is the same the biggest differences teams are shooting thirty one percent from three woods I on the floor I find that I find it preposterous that he has anything to do with that other than. What I said about their offense I think so I think they're getting lucky. The free throw thing is very interesting to me because I don't know what's going on there. Their free throw rate doesn't just drop with him on the floor. It drops by like a Gargantuan. They become the bucks. Basically they become the best non fouling team, the entire NBA I don't know why that is I'd have to look at it a little bit more, but I think his offense is helping their defense more than anything else that he's doing in his offenses like I mean obviously spectacular. You can do anything you want with the guy. I, just think. You. Know I spent a lot of the early season. Some of the early season I a podcast watching Lonzo ball wondering. What exactly is Lonzo? Ball begin in the NBA like it's just like, is he? Is he like he's still not shooting at very well? He's not a traditional half court point guard by any means like. Is he just going to become like a flick is six man like what what is he going to be? And then enter Zaylon, and he has this immediate. Beautiful Chemistry was resigned. They play off of each other. They both want to run. I mean all Lonzo wants to do is throw seventy foot passes, and now he has a target to do it. they have a beautiful chemistry in the half court and more than that. Zion is. A playmaker full stop in the half court in the open court. He's another playmaker in so Lonzo's lift as a playmaker particularly in the half court shrinks, and if he's really a thirty percent, three point shooter, which that's what he's shooting from three this season. If that's real in a lot of that can be on catching shoots from somebody else then you have. Lonzo as like this, he's not really a traditional point guard anymore at all in the half court. He's sort of like a full court player who does a little bit of everything in the Half Court rebounds the hell out of it defends the hell out of it. You Have Ingram who I think a future primary playmaker. He's a little over taxed, but in a role where he's maybe your third playmaker, he he's perfect and has a really nice pick and roll chemistry already with Zion. And also likes to push the pace and everything sort of made sense and Zaylon. Alonzo as a basketball player just makes more sense with Zion and it just like he went from a guy that boy i. wonder what Pelicans are going to do with him and extension toxic. What does his future in the League to like? This is really interesting now and it just the combination of talent, I just clicked in a way that I'm not sure the Pelicans even expected to. Your look I mean everything you say about about. All those guys is right. To Me Lonzo Ball on when you're looking at his positive size. SMART. I. Think the guys very very smart player. And he's extremely unselfish. I, mean, he would much rather pass the ball. Than do anything else on the court, so you've got the start toward being a very effective. Basketball player as you mentioned shooting thirty percent from three and making two and a half threes game. He was watching like Oh. Yeah Jay. Twelve shots and the thing I will say is one of the things that I. Thought was a good step forward. For Lonzo Ball this year, is he had some games where he was like one for ten one for eleven from three and I saw that as a real positive. Because you know in the past what I've seen from him if he shoot those first three and they didn't go in, he was passing shots now I think Alvin Gentry ed convinced him like No. No, no, you're going to keep shooting the ball and if you're open, you shoot it. So, I think that they've got a good thing. In Lonzo Ball obviously is only twenty two where his development has gotta calm is. Shots off the dribble both APP the Rim Kenny find a way to finish. He hasn't really figured that out and. Can't shoot the jump shot or flow. It doesn't have any of that off the dribble right now, so if yes, to put the ball on the floor to the basket. He simply looking to pass the ball. You can see it with defensive teams. They really don't commit to him because he doesn't have great explosion going to the basket anyway, and he doesn't WanNa. Really shoot the ball in those situations that would be his place that developed, but man at six six with his ability to defend the passes the ball. He's making the three. You know I think sometimes we can get too focused on what guys can't do He's got a nice package. Package of skills, and as you mention, that got other ball handling parts pieces. He doesn't need to facilitate everything in the half court and I. Almost think what if everything goes right and you can run your half court offense through Zion Williamson Brandon Ingram, jrue holiday with some catching suit and movement for JJ rhetoric in the half court. What's the problem if Lonzo ball becomes mainly just a standstill shooter? You don't have. Decreased you'RE GONNA play. You'RE GONNA play twenty five possessions a game in transition anyway, which is where his bread and butter is yeah and again. I think that's what you do as a coach as you look to people's strengths, and you put it together like..

"On paper as upsets I think we're GONNA have a bunch of those early on. Because like I've got the new. New Orleans Utah game the very first game back. Like if Zaire back especially I'm taking New Orleans in that because that's a game, they need to win. Quin Snyder doesn't need to win that game like let's let's ease into this whole thing and I think what the contenders will do Zach as they get closer to that first round of the playoffs. That's when they're going to start amping up the minutes in getting people ready so I think those first few games are going to be absolutely crucial for Memphis and I think their schedules actually tough. Right there like if I were them, I'd WanNa be playing the clippers, the Lakers and dinner. Early, on because I think you're gonNA, see their main guys. Twenty four minutes something like that as as into it I would guess that they're faking it a little slower in practices and stuff right now. I don't know that for sure. That's just my guess. Well I. Don't I don't know how I feel about you coming on this podcast and using your coaching expertise in Acumen to undermined my point coach. You know it's it's not very now. It's very, it's I. You're probably right, and my point was probably stupid. In that case, watch out for the PELICANS because their first three Games are Utah Clippers and then the rest of their schedules teams that are under five hundred so they if if if his ion returns in time. By that logic which I actually kind of agree with now that you've said it. They have a real chance to go like seven, one six and two if they can pick up where they left off. Yeah, and I think here's the point, is that? I I think the bigger problem if I'M A MEMPHIS FAN. And I'm thinking that Memphis is being treated unfairly in this whole thing to me wouldn't be the schedule or anything else because you only got to play eight games, you're up three and a half games. You had a tough schedule coming up. Had you resume? I would feel good about that. The part that I wouldn't like if I were Memphis. Fan Is that we're probably going to have to play and play in probably not gonNA be able to finish up more than four games, and now that's. All I'm going to have to go out and win another game. I could be done two games into the the playoffs. You know not make it into the finally. That's where I feel a little bit. Did a guest and I'm not against what the NBA is doing in this because I think. Both economically and for the encore products. They needed these eight games leading in, and it wouldn't have been worth doing. If all you brought the sixteen playoff teams, it would have been a bunch of. That meant nothing. So I thought they made the best decision they could here. But if I were Memphis fan I'd probably be railing about it, yeah. That the time for self interest. I, just I I kind of lost it a couple of months ago, talking to I'd like. The NBA got a lot of credit for everyone came together and have the collective spirit in mind like actually think that there was a little more pernicious sort of self interest behind the scenes like I was talking to a lottery team that I won't name who was like well. You know I. Mean it kind of sucks for us because you know. We were set up to like one in fifteen in our last. Whatever games really move up the lottery odds? Our frozen, but if we have to come back and play, we might win together. They Stop Stop. Pandemic just make the best of it. Put All. Your stuff decided to make the best of the other team. We should mention here as Boston. which gets the grizzlies pick with top six protection, so if the grizzlies make the playoffs, Boston will get the seventeenth whatever it is if they missed the playoffs. And jump up in the lottery. Then the pick rose over and becomes unprotected. Next season. I would guess that Boston is rooting for that scenario because an unprotected grizzlies pick next season, even if they draft another good player in the Western. Conference your then you then give yourself to be like an injury to a grisly away from being in pole positions, and that's the other thing. Let's talk about. The New Orleans Pelicans, the other team at the edge of this discussion team that has been chasing Memphis since the return of Williamson and really you know they're twenty, eight and thirty six their tenth minus point eight points per game, whatever fifteenth and offense, which surprised me I thought they were better than that and certainly with a certain. Like Flying Boulder of a human being, they have been better than that twentieth and defense. That did not surprise me. They were a train wreck on defense. For most the season with Zion they are ten and nine, and with Zion on the court they are plus nine point five per one hundred possessions, so you really talking about two teams the Pelicans Without Zion and the Pelicans with Zion. The pelicans woods I on despite the fact that he was not in good shape and struggle horribly on defense looked very much like a playoff team and frankly. One of the most fun teams to watch the entire league, if not the single most fun team to watch. There are a lot of ways to tackle this, but the first is like. We need to know I on his coming back. We don't quite know that yet, but. Boy. This team is really really interesting and. His presence changed them in obvious ways right like he's a star. He's already a star. He walks in as star. You can give him the ball pretty much anywhere on the floor and let him go one on one. You can use them in lots of different ways on offense. You can post them. You can even run a little pick and roll with him. which is something we didn't see? You can. He can take it coast to coast and just run people over and tear the backboard down. But more than that. I just felt like something. More ephemeral something more intangible clicked into place for them. Just it just seemed like everybody was now in the appropriate spot in the hierarchy, there was all of a sudden, a little bit more playmaking on the floor, so that all the playmaking making responsibilities were more well distributed. offensively. They had a look of a team that was a having a lot of fun and be. was starting to settle into a groove in terms of like. We know how we want to play. We know what our strengths are defensively. They had a ways to go coach. What strikes you about design on version of the PELICANS? Well Zion, in particular I, mean you? You hit on all the things that you can do with him and I think you hit on the intangible part of it, I. Think just you know like we talk with John Moran. Zion there, there's a different level of confidence with the PELICANS team. I mean I think they're players believe. That, there are a playoff team, and even that they can make some noise in the play offs when they have him in all of their dies but I think what people missed. With the PELICANS is how rapidly this team was improving. Even before he came back, so they got off to the six and twenty two start where they were nineteenth in the League often simply and twenty eighth defensively I mean they were. Not even really competitive. Okay, I mean the transition defense was. Still is unbelievably bad. Yeah, terrible and give up a lot of points in the pain, and they turn the ball over, and this not much good to watch, then after that six and twenty to start 'em before Zion came back, they had a stretch for a month middle of December. Two Middle January. They go eleven and five before he comes back. And they were ninth offensively and twelve defensively, and then Zaylon comes back, and they actually were eleven offensively in those twenty games. I know he missed one of an eight defensively with Zion and so. This team continued to get better now. What Zion bring to them, okay. How did they get better defensively that one has? Stuck with me because US Cohen's not very good defend. I'm so happy. You brought this up because again. If you look at their numbers with Zion on the floor, they're giving up one hundred and three point five hundred possessions, which is like number, two in the League would be number two in the league among teams with him off the floor. They're giving up like dude. Just letting people score basically. And so I I did some research into this. I want to hear your answer to the question. Do you believe that he's? What is happening in? Do you believe it has anything actually to do as I Williamson I? Do think it has a little bit to do as I on Williamson. Williamson's I. Go back to the point I may..

"Don't think it doesn't really change my opinion now I still think is going to walk away, but he's certainly not going to announce it while these damn they it'll be it'll be a quiet thing if he does it because I think as well he's probably looking at all these situation here and again I think the coaching team USA would factor into a little bit. Now if next season doesn't start until March and if the Olympics I mean if they happen in. July or August or whatever the next year then. I I think he's I just think he looks at all and he's probably like. He's done because I think it was joey. Vardon as well. said the other day ask someone asked Papa Bear and he said he wasn't really enjoying himself down there. You know he's sort of confined to his room. You can't do all that much. So he doesn't he doesn't like it as much and if he now has the white, another potentially five or six months before next season starts. I think he might just walk away so. See Calling your shot speed hell but prediction. Well we have the blazers win. and. We had of course, the Spurs win and we had the sons win. One of those teams trying to hold on for dear life the Memphis Grizzlies did not win. They are the loan loser here from the day from the mega bowl participants. Celtics kept them from clinching a spot in a planned series. They're not out of it, but they could clinch today with the. W. Grizzlies got a little unlucky if. Boston decided not to mail it in played their starters like basically normal minutes maybe not like to the full extent starters played like thirty minutes tatum was great. All these guys are going and they just got not that they deserve to win this game I also thought they played like crappy couldn't hit a shot to save their life. From outside of the paint but. Sort of sucks. For them. Area Unlucky. Yellow bubble. Resting happening all over the place to keep fresh for the play and grizzlies have not been the beneficiaries of that whatsoever the Grizz play the raptors, full strength and the Raptors next game. took off some guys gris play jazz full strength. Same thing jazz took off some guys next game. The son's got plenty of help today. The Spurs got plenty of help today and it stinks it also stinks that they get off to a slow start every game and then they gotta fight back every single time and they do fight back and they have generally good third quarter but I always dig themselves a whole when the fourth quarter started their Brad Stevens had he's second unit with our up ten points maybe. And you saw Jason Tatum on the exercise bike and it was like he's probably not going to bring back all of his style is, but they all came back in and mostly played until the last like ten minutes there until the grizzlies check out their players. That's when Brad Stevens check that. But he was he has said that he didn't feel the same was playing to the level that he wanted. So he wanted to get us these games as reps and especially I think Kemba Walker as well. He's coming off an injury. So I think Kendall Walker looks incredible I feel like it's going overlooked I know I sound like a broken record on these bubble wraps every game. He looks really damn good to me. He'll. His balance is spot on his great height on his jumper right now like he looks. Out Healthy he looks ready to go this celtics team with a Campbell like that coming off high pick and rolls I think is very dangerous especially as a raptors fan I'm like he just takes them to the next level in my opinion I know the interior like their big at the Rim can they prevent people inside will be an issue but what do you think tray of what you saw from this game or maybe can themself celtics are totally underrated rights have replaced the raptors as the underrated team in the eastern conference because like you're saying looks great Gordon Hayward has been performing pretty well so far Jason Tatum still. A star Jaylen Brown and have a great game today but he's bound to have some good games had a monster dunk today we're floating in the air and they just have so many guys that you can actually play significant minutes. You know cantor in score some baskets inside if you need them to bigs are going to be a concern no doubt about it but the defense usually shows up and they've got a lot of players who can score baskets offensively four straight wins. You know they are building a rhythm right here. So maybe that'll pay off come playoff time the celtics are looking good shoutout to the beantown boys. Say to John Rant. Off In this game today he he did I mean he went he took like a three minute break in the second quarter and the Celtics ripped off like an eleven to overrun Out there they were toast and not only offensively I know you too great line in the box score I thought this was one of the better games I've seen them play defensively just from pure effort he deflections was rotating. You had a huge block in this one with his left hand I. Like the kid wanted to win this game and they still of course to get in you just like. I don't know if you're a grizzlies fan I look at that and go even if we don't and these are sort of like playoff games he he brought it today I can't say that for really anyone else I thought. It was rough nobody could hit a shot but I thought he was just trying to will his team to get back into this game because I can never get over a hot it always like sorta chip away and then Grayson Allen would have a wide open look at three and he would client right back to me clanked it again it's like Ooh that could have been like a six point game or.

"Cam noon has found a new home with none other than the New England patriots. While, this was a place that many people had suggested and thought about after his I think it was yeah. You least obviously after release. There was no. We figured if it was going to happen, it would have happened already, but I guess the pages take time. Do they do diligence? Make sure in fact that he was healthy 'cause he looks I mean some the work. Suppose he looks healthy, but you don't really now When Negga said there was no rush. It was like all right. He's a free agent. There's someone else assign. And we're lucky. We get some really massive brands. This episode is one of those lucky ones. Today I'm actually joined by two guests. Jones enlisted were from National Wildlife Federation earlier in the year. Rubicon was named the official sustainability and tech partner for recycle mania of the competition under the management of the NWF but will get into all of that and enlists. Thank you both so much for being here today I've only done multiple jest episodes like once or twice so let's just establish a little bit of water for answering some of the questions. Honest truth besides my husband and my dog youtube or the only people. I've interacted with today so I'm a little over all of us to bumble words over each other so Liz let's start with you. Tell me a bit about your role at. Nwf A little bit about your professional time line and how you can got to where you are and then in that time line or in your story what do you think sparked passion for environmental sustainability in in Christie. You're on deck and I'd love to know the same free. We'll start with this. I am the director of Pre K. To twelve education for National Wildlife Federation. I have actually end with the fedaration for most of my career. I'm going into my twenty four th year and I really started off in a regional office and did a lot of regional education work and for the last eleven years have been focusing my efforts and the national level And really pushing forward the work that we do with schools and other informal education opportunities and community My background actually. My undergraduate degree was in wildlife biology and forestry and I started off as a wildlife biologist but Kinda fun interesting fact is I found. I had a lot more fun topping and and I feel like I made a bigger impact talking with people within the community that I was doing my research in collecting data. You know like the nighttime Barstool chat where we were talking about. Grizzly Bear Habitat. And what it meant to you know Maintain and keep that habitat healthy and the ways people get involved so that that's somewhat how I moved from that into education and got my masters in education at in Oregon And then pretty much. Except for one other job with The Lake Champlain Basin Program doing watershed education. I've been working for WF And you know my my passion for this work. I I think really stems back from my childhood. I was lucky enough to spend every single summer and a place called a Greensboro Vermont which is in North East Kingdom of Vermont on Kathy Lake. It was my grandparents Cabin and my parents would just throw out the door every morning We'd be gone all day with the catching crayfish and swimming at night. We'd be catching lightning bugs and watching a shooting stars with my grandparents and it just it set the stage for my wanting to be able to pass this Passion for Nature and the environment and to also protect loved that Christie Europe. Sure yeah so I have been with National Wildlife Federation for several years as well. I think I'm going on. I started in two thousand three at National Wildlife Federation. So I guess I'm going on my sixteenth seventeenth year. I've worked in higher education program so I manage higher education programmes at National Wildlife Federation working with colleges and universities working with them to help them advance their efforts on campus Sustainability Renewable Energy Waste Reduction Habitat Restoration Green purchasing that sort of thing. And I've I've done that since the entire time I've been at NWS We also in our program here. We also help college students. Young professionals develop leadership skills and also learn more about career opportunity so career development to learn what their opportunities are in conservation field or their opportunities are in learning about sustainability and sustainability skill. So they can bring that to whatever a career field sector. They choose to go into after they finish school. So I believe you know similar to Liz. I grew up outdoors playing all the time spending all day in the summertime that we would be out as soon as the sun was up and become home. You know. As soon as it was starting to get dark I grew up camping. You know we would go to the closest national park to win where we grew up was Shenandoah National Park here in Virginia and I still live in this area in that area. So we we go to the park all the time. It's beautiful and so I take my little girl there as well So just growing up. We spent a Lotta time outdoors. I really enjoyed seeing wildlife and spending time and hiking and going to the beach and searching for seashells and that sort of thing when I graduated college. Actually a little bit. Before I graduated college I went on a trip to Andros Island. The Bahamas in it's a family island in the Bahamas and I went to a field station their biological field station and that is where I spent the next six years of my life. After College I worked at the field station. I worked with college. Students and high school high school students helping down learn about ecology and learning field skills in that type of thing and that really helped me really understand value of hands on learning. So you know whenever you education as you know there's sitting in the classroom and learning there is value to that there's also value to being out in the field learning skills. You know the experiential part of that and so. When after that after I left the field station I worked for nonprofit for a little bit in the environmental security sector and that really looked at conflict around natural resources so water timber diamonds was another example and that that was looking at conflicts most likely outside the US. And then. When I started looking for a new opportunity I was really attracted to. Nwf's education programs. We have a very large education program. National Wildlife Federation engaging. Little kids all the way up through adults and so that is kind of what got me hooked at. Nwf and applied for a job on the campus sustainability team. And so I've been here since two thousand three. That's awesome okay so I will let you guys now kind of feel these answer. You know whoever wants to answer white and build upon each other's responses in we're going to focus a lot on education recycle mania but you know the. Nwf Is a massive umbrella brand for a lot of different environmental conservation causes. So I did want to do a little bit of background about the mission. You know the strategic plan the six pillars of what makes the NWF and then we can get into the specs of the educational programs so whoever wants to field kind of the overall NWF mission answer can A. I'll go again and you know the midst of NWF is really to unite ensure that wildlife thrive in a rapidly changing world and There's no doubt in all of our minds and these days that our world is rapidly changing whether it's with this pandemic Like we're facing right now or the pack that more than one third of Americans. Fish and wildlife are at risk for extinction or the climate crisis. And of course all of these impacts what the impacts are on any of our marginalized communities so you recently. I just wanted to mention this because I think it's really important and it really sets the stage who I believe. Nwf is particularly right now and our it was CEO Calling Amarah who recently said that we need to be leading this charged with compassion. You know during this time because this pandemic is clearly showing that men. There are many structural inequalities in our societies such as access to clean water food healthcare or the

Steve Martin On His Years As A Comic — And Walking Away From Stand-Up

"But if you could hold Steve Martin has been making people laugh often with highly conceptual humor since the nineteen sixties when he was a staff writer on the smothers brothers comedy hour in the seventies he became a major stand up comedy star filling arenas with his fans he rose to fame along with his then new TV show called Saturday Night Live on which he made many memorable appearances as a wild and crazy guy a medieval barber and a fan of king tut eventually the fame that brought in huge audiences also made it impossible for him to do the kind of comedy that made him original he starred in movies from the jerk to parenthood and in recent years has also written plays essays and books and toured with both his bluegrass band and with friend and fellow comic Martin short Steve Martin won the Mark Twain prize for American humor in two thousand five in was a Kennedy center honoree in two thousand seven Terry gross spoke with Steve Martin in two thousand eight about his memoir born standing up Steve Martin welcome back to fresh AIR eleven returning her thank you I thank you very much I'd like you to open with a reading from the beginning of the book and we've we've edited the slightly to make it crystal a little shorter for the broadcast great be happy to I did stand up comedy for eighteen years ten of those years were spent learning for years were spent refining and for years were spent in wild success I was seeking comic originality and fame fell on me as a by product the course was more plodding than her ROIC I did not strive valiantly against doubters but took incremental steps started with a few intuitive leaps I was not naturally talented I didn't sing dance or act the working around that minor detail made me inventive I was not self destructive though I almost destroyed myself in the end I turned away from stand up with the tired swivel of my head and never looked back until now a few years ago I began researching and recalling the details of this crucial part of my professional life which inevitably touches upon my personal life and was reminded why I did stand up and why I walked away in a sense this book is not an autobiography but a biography because I am writing about someone I used to know yes these events are true yet sometimes they seem to have happened to someone else and I often felt like a curious onlooker or someone trying to remember a dream I ignored my stand up career for twenty five years but now having finished this memoir I view this time with surprising warmth one can have it turns out an affection for the war years thanks for reading that that Steve Martin reading from his memoir born standing up which has just been published in paperback yeah I guess I didn't realize how much you closed the door on your comedy years how much there was like a before and after it ended you were done and that was it right I I I'm it was about nineteen eighty one I still had a few obligations left but I knew that hi I could not continue but I guess I could have continued if I had nothing to go to but I did have something to go to which was movies and you know the act had become so known that in order to go back I would have had to create an entirely new show and I wasn't up to it especially when the opportunity for movies and writing movies came around why would you have to create an entirely new show well like I say the the the act was really it there is a passage in the book which I caught because it was so hard to explain but the act essentially besides all the jokes and bits and everything was conceptual and once the concept was understood there was nothing more to develop it's like saying painting the same blank canvas over and over and over and over and over once the concept is no you don't see the need to see to that and that was in the back of my head that I was really done artistically with with what I had created or pastiche to you know in the reading that you just did you describe yourself as not being naturally talented did you think of yourself as naturally funny I'm I didn't didn't think of myself in that way no although I I just love to comedy I I was raised with laurel and hardy and I Love Lucy Anne and Jerry Lewis and I just loved it and I had a friend in high school and we would just laugh all day and put on skits and you know it's the Andy Kaufman thing over to Marty short thing where you're performing in your bedroom for yourself and I I loved magic and so I would practice my magic tricks in front of a mirror for hours and hours and hours because I was told that you must practice you must practice and never present a trip before it's ready but I was just inclined toward show business but I didn't know what I just like being on stage you got your start working in Disneyland you were living in southern California and when you were ten you were selling guidebooks there then you later work for magic shop demonstrating magic tricks and I get the sense from your memoir that demonstrating those magic tricks you know hours a day and really getting them getting them down because you're doing them so much that that gave you a sense that performance required a great deal of craft that even comedy wasn't just a question of going out on stage and saying funny things that there was enormous amounts of work and practice and thought that would have to go into it well that that idea of that that you really had to work at this stuff didn't necessarily come from Disneyland it I I mean I think yes and in terms of presenting a trick but having having it so well honed in your mind was really giving me a sense of security it was I don't want to go out there half baked and you know you learn that through the years you know you're you do a magic show with a friend and you rehearse it a couple of times and yes every all the timing has to be exactly perfect but while you're out there it's it's a different world it's not your mirror you have to make on the spot adjustments but that's just you know whatever entertainer does actually working at the magic shop really gave me a sense of comedy because it was all the jokes we did the tricks but we have all these jokes I had a friend Jim Barlow who you know he he was the the guy I worked with there but he had patter worked out you know it he would go to customers and say Medicare money I mean help you not and you know call them suckers it was really funny and and kind of friendly rude what was your patter I just took all of Jim's patter I'm I'm trying to think of other ones yeah I said it would just it would somebody would buy something it would say and because you are hundred customer today you get a free paperback it's a little silly things like that but Disneyland I'm fifteen right here at early act was a combination of banjo playing juggling magic tricks and comedy and some of that stating your later at two but it sounds like a vaudeville act yes I was very interested involved it was the only sort of discipline that was a five minute act on stage which is what I really enjoyed ins and saw myself doing and I bought books on it I went to the Long Beach pike which was off the carnival fair you know four is really a place for drunken sailors to get tattoos but there was also side shows is very interested in that but you know there is these are all in there these are short acts there was one of the employees at Disneyland that I worked with was named Steve Stewart and he worked in vaudeville and he did a sack for me one day on the floor of the magic shop and I had a couple of great gags one was that I actually used and I asked him if I could use them because I was very strict about using any material that wasn't mine or that that was taken from somebody else let's put it this way I became strict wasn't strict at first there is one trick that one joke that Dave steward did where he said are not yet a glove white glove in his hand the magicians glove any he said and now the glove into dove trick and he threw it into the air and then it hit the floor and he just looked at it and consent and set up for my next trick he went on and it was the first time I saw comedy created out of nothing of nothing happening and I Glaum don to that wait wait wait you're doing I think is not only making comedy out of nothing but making comedy out of people's expectations which you were going to fail to fulfill well yes exactly and I I really started that when I became a semi professional meaning I was working the local folk music clubs going around either working for free or for a week and I quickly decided that you know the material was you know good or weak or whatever and I decided whatever it was I was going to pretend like it was fantastic and how great am I how great is what you're seeing and I think that's what grizzly hunting it's a tune him too because they couldn't believe that someone actually was that confident

Working in Unison with Justin Ricks Pro Basketball Agent & Manager

"Of course The number one go every athlete won't make to them You know as a basketball that was in third grade. I was by far was not the best on the team. Probably wasn't the best or any team played on. You know what I mean and But I was a student. I just love being around the game. I loved managed Love getting practice is just love being around. And now when I got to high school I started to become realistic. You're not going to get a college scholarship. You know what I'm saying. Like all these coaches. They come in to see a best friends. So I'll start thinking about different ways. I could just really be steroid again. And at that point like I remember. I was getting out of practice one day and I coached crabby practice. You know just like just going through the motions in our coaches like man. I Dunno taking taking this for granted because a Lotta. This is GONNA BE. Our last ever played basketball. A lot of not getting. The kind of scholarships may not make today. Just Kinda hit me at that point. I was like man. I meeting B. as in our you know and I remember as a to everybody who will listen I will tell Mama be as our GM. And I really believe that you know what I mean and so you know what I did was I want the grammar state and Um when I was there I still try to stay around the game and I was still talking to a lot of my friends. That was playing basketball in the COLLAGEN. You know Still discount trying to study the business and it ended up animated JOB WITH THE MEMPHIS. Grizzlies and I felt like that was like probably the best thing to happen. Because the unique thing about working with the grizzlies everything was in one location unlike most NBA teams. You know the basketball operations the business operations and the practice facility was pretty much in the same building so any given time you know you can see. Lying highlands are the GM and a break role in automates alike and And in my manager at the time was over the says marketing department like every month he will have like maybe a player like Scout. Or sometimes I know how does come and speak to the market style and like I took that to my advantage. I was like all right. He came and spoke to us. I entered it was myself so so when I see him doing gang there when I see him around a bit. I'm a speech on period. Side is like Sede see certain people and I speak to him and I did ask them questions and I remember my best friend wind up becoming my first client when I became. Aj here the free agent workout with the Grizzlies. Coming up and I'm by went to GM adjutant seducing myself like what was going on Monday just agent one day a private looking like man the head of the kid talking to me but as it you know what I mean but I'm looking like man is only thirty GM's so I know you've probably talked to a lot of ages in his lines also. I'M GONNA ask questions because I realize man of you ask questions you ask the right question you'll get passes you know what I mean and So you know after I left the Grizzlies Man I at that certified in my mind. My best friend became my first client and First Year in Atman. I just learned as much as I came in our prime only to class at the time. I really wasn't trying to decide. A Lotta guys always always kinda put it in in in eternal record label. You don't want to a lot of artists and you can't have none of them released the album so what I edited backers in what I mean by that is like I would go to Portsmouth some of the Argos many places as possible late Dan. Facebook and just get connected with coaches general managers. You know what I mean so whenever I do start to sign players our have jobs to give to help them build their careers you know so no man. That's good 'cause we kind of paint a picture of like of the progression and so kind of going back to like the early years when you realize I am not going to be the guy that you know that the gift that offers may be go for you when you're trying to figure out this agent thing right you told everybody about it right like NAM and you can do it right but from an income. Make it out there right right right how. You're honestly like a because I I heard that a lot. You know what I mean like man. You know we come from we come from. It's no agents Man Like what are you talking about the first player dead from my era that made it to the NBA was promised up But before my area you know we always had basketball but no benjamin bed rustles actually from Mar Louisiana before he migrated to Oakland so we always had like athletes but on a business on business. We never had nobody. So you know you're right. When I used to tell people. I'm going to be as people really look like Trip like houses ablaze. And but I really like I could do anything. I really felt room featherweight like right now saying when they say you know you can do all things through Christ. I really believed that scripture like do whatever you know what I mean and it may be a journey. I may not get another night. But I'm always played along dame everything I do you know so I think one of the biggest things that just kept me going my confidence. You know what I'm saying like Interviews UNITES TO. Listen to interviews. Ai Is listened interviews. Kobe is listened interviews. That Wayne like three people that really influenced me. Listen to interviews masterpiece. Listen TO INTERVIEWS MALCOLM X. All five hundred people by Marlee like all. These people got one thing in common. They believe we felt. Like I was GonNa be the best in over the the way. I'm going to be the greatest rapper loud masterpiece like be the best businessman in a slight. Nobody penetrate their belief. Just take on that mentality. You know what I mean like men listens like if this what you WANNA do. You GotTa stand firm on a really gotta dedicate everything to a because if I say on the aging without putting the actions behind it denounces another personality with pipedream like I started doing was at the time I had a full time job. You know what I mean so I get off work. I used to dedicate like an hour and a half to study. Looking at contracts is all public domain. Certain things are public domain. You know what I mean this asking questions again like I say when I worked for the grizzlies you know if I bump into one of the SCOUSE. I'm asking him. How do you evaluate talent? You know what I mean. What what goes into making decision goes into roster changes like these people used to you know. I'm sorry I sucked because you know what I'm saying but they would give me a free day and But the question is short minutes obtains is having a confidence that belief in myself

A new Twitter client finally gives us the power to edit tweets — sort of

"It's now easier to undo. And Edit your tweets. A new twitter client called. Grizzly plus provides an undue button. That lets you set a delay between when you send your tweet and when it actually posts it can be ten seconds or ten minutes and if you have second thoughts during that time you can click undo so it never posted all. It also helps streamline the process if you want to Redo a tweet by quickly editing it reposting it and then deleting the old one for you or it lets you set a tweet to automatically deletes after a certain amount of time. Brislin plus will cost you though. It's about six bucks a month. Ask for actually being able to edit original tweets once there posted. That might never happen. Twitter's CEO says that defeats the original purpose of twitter.

"grizzlies" Discussed on The Woj Pod

"John Mirant Journey Jackson fresh off a nice late night flight from Atlanta like this is the glamorous life of the NBA right. Like what time did you guys get in here last night Probably like one closer to very late. You Guys Jaren Jar. Like how much do you guys my sense? Is You guys? Do everything together home on the road. What what. What's what's it like having a guy who you connect with right away who you see there. You know you're building an organization. They're building an organization around. And like you just intertwined and the way you guys all right now I mean you know it makes it easier on the basketball court just because you know all chemistry's chemistry but At the end of the day I think it's just it's unique. Sr Ganic I think were closed group overall and we all seem to get along. Usually just 'cause usually because we're all young but I will say That it just Kinda just happened you some. You really can't can't put a finger on specifically why but it's good. What did you know about this Guy John when you get drafted by Memphis? You know. You'RE COMING MEMPHIS IT number two. What did you know about? Jaren Jackson started watching Fan. We kinda talk after the lottery. You know trying to get to know each other after I got drafted. It just went to another level again like no laughing joking all that time visual learning each other just carried over to the floor. What's it been like being without this guy on the court here? The last few weeks plane without it's been tough you know Not Too many guys can do he do on the floor He does a lot for us. spreads the flow out Protect a pain dominating. The paint was just a lot of things that you can't just add up to but she just got God and just compete each and every Jaren when you get drafted fourth and COME TO MEMPHIS. Last year you probably could sense. You're at the end of one era. Conley Marcus Saul and the team was going to cycle into. What would be the next Thera? Wha- what was it like early on last year with playing with Conley plane with the assault and then seeing the thing start to break apart over time and knowing. Hey I'm going to be kind of front and center on this rebuild here now when when the front office starts making moves you usually get wind of you know things are going to start changing Mike and Marken. Everybody did a great job of leading in doing but they did for so many years that they kind of put the team in a great position. Where me and Dylan at the time. Who were there can make an impact going forward and we know how to carry ourselves handle ourselves and then we add him it. Just it makes everything easy so it was quick though because last year it was a completely different team has come. It's now completely whole thing now. How much do you guys hear about like Memphis is used to have like a partnership right? It was Marcus Hall and my colleague for a very long time. They accomplished a lot got to the playoffs. Every year advanced in the playoffs. When you listen to the fan base or you listen in that community and even maybe around the building in the organization about sort of standard those guys set like professionalism and how they went about their business. Do you still feel it around the organization a little bit. Did you hear about it? A Lot. I mean. Of course you hear it a lot. Those guys meant a lot to Memphis But I mean we're a new team like you said So we just go out and just try to us and instead of liberal somebody else life You know just go out and compete. Just play together. Shot to get wins. This was you know how it goes when you have first year. Second Year guys. You're supposed to be in the lottery. You're supposed to take your bumps over few years and then maybe two years from now you compete to get the eighth spot is a seven spot in the West and here you guys are holding down the eighth spot. You've done it with injuries with guys out with some teams on your tail within your group. Was there much conversation earlier about. Maybe we're a little bit better than people think and maybe we shouldn't be putting any limits on what we can do. It is not easy to make the playoffs in the West. You guys know what you go through every night. But what was the conversation among the group about that? Maybe this would be better quicker than than anyone else imagined. We was looking to the future. We always focused on. The president thanked the first message. We sent out to each other worse. We try to be good now. So we'll doing that. We could Practicing hard you know just trying to get better each and every day Just trying to continue to learn grow. We got a young team we had some vets. We got some young coaches. So does everybody know just bought into what we have to do. Learning everything and then once we got clicking. We just went on a row. Now I think from from the start. We knew our building what we're capable of. But like you said you know. Stay in the president's key I think when you stay in the present and do just your habits. Every day everything works out the way it should if you just put in the work and you know that's what we did and we've always been confident in income from anything and income from Windsor. We just were GONNA have the confidence regardless to go out there and play because we're doing what we love at the end of the day doesn't doesn't matter for winning or losing. Brennan do the same thing. Yeah Jaren you've seen Gye. He's had two plays this year that I think John has gotten more like made more. Highlights gotten more attention for to miss dunks right than anybody gets on made ones the. Kevin Love One earlier this season and then Anthony Davis the one the other night like. Are you guys waiting for him? Like one of these days. He's one of those is going to go down against one of these guys right like like you get a little closer on those. When he's put trying to put one down on seven foot all star guy in this league. Are we getting closer to seeing it? I mean you've already seen it as well and there's a lot a lot of crazy he's missed. But there's a lot of crazy nineties made and you're gonNA see a probably a lot of both for a many years but he's got to remember that at the end of the day that's that's not all to his game You know those dunks are crazy but you know the other parts of his game. The fact that he's able to read the flooring has like he is the reason why we're getting wins. And that's pretty much all I care about at this point. Do you fear for his safety? And he's he's ten feet up in the air flying. He's it's a hard landing on those zero party like all right. Don't get hurt doing these. Maybe maybe on a couple of hours but I you know body control. He has good body control. So you know we work on. We work on stuff like that Landings and jumping and stuff to make sure that doesn't happen so yeah I'm not. I'm not worried about do in that moment. What is how in your mind. Are you calculating? Sort of the risk reward of one down on somebody about because you get caught up in the air you get hit or is it just instinct. You just see the rim and just go just go always address of my mindset was just finished play Honestly don't care who's under the go Stood I say my set. So the one. The other night was a moment. You thought I got this one. I've got this one just caught the back door and we're just going to finish They ended up quality to charge. But I mean I just wasn't able to get our before I wasn't able to get up for They call it Scotts turf builder. Thicker Lawn has announced. Grizzlies' Ja Morant Says 'I Honestly Don't Care About Rookie of the Year' Award

"John Moran shoot around this morning. Honestly don't care about the rookie of the year. They can give it to who they want do you do you think he doesn't care about the rookie of the year war. I think he does care about the rookie of the year warrant. It just seems like something you do subconsciously. Just try to get you. I mean I think he knows. He's an elite nothing. He knows that the playoff push that his team is in China Goes hand-in-hand with the award. And it's also the right thing to say. I'm more focused on winning awards so I get it politically right But I do think that he cares more about the winning right now because he knows that they're tied together. I give Ziouani in the Pelicans Nash. Afc is going to be because Zion has this miraculous. You know second half that could win the war but he goes onto the spot. You know what I mean. Because he is going to be because he played good enough to hold onto the rookie. Where so it kind of goes hand going to answer the at the same time that we're getting from from the personally. I learned from John. Rando I could say. Maybe he doesn't at the same time he always seems like someone who pushes his peers. Even if that means that it takes a lightweight from him. I think I'm trying to find the video video. It was A. It was an article about the time they jaap played against the heat. He's being tyler hero or the heroes on the bench and he hit a shot next to the bench and he screamed at them. This is my war at tile here because this is tyler hero was season some trying to find that because I mean this would be completely a different change. My say if you went from this is my war too. I don't really care like that anymore. But were they in the playoff hunt because I know at the beginning of the season. They weren't maybe they weren't maybe they weren't but yeah he's right. It is the perfect answer. It is the perfect answer and it does go hand in hand because I think we sat on the show. Whoever wins that deserves the award.

NBA trade deadline 2020 surprises

"Other very minor trade deadline day deals from today. You guys all run through. Stop me if you've You've got something to say about them. The magic acquired James Ennis from the sixers for a second round. Pick the nuggets acquired choir Jordan mccray from the Grizzlies for Shabazz Napier. The rockets acquired Bruno Komo glow from the Grizzlies Jordan Bell. The hawks acquired Derek Wilton junior from the clippers for cash. Does he already waived. Oh they got their initial report. was that the hawks. Were sending back cash to the clippers clippers but then it was corrected cash was come in with Derrick Walton Junior. They not only do the hawks get a player who I believe. They're waving but they got some. Okay how's it was just a cash trade exchanging exchanging dollars and then the hawks also acquired scalp and two million dollars cash. I think from the Blazers for a future heavily protected second round pick I think its top fifty five protected. We descended a few times so we say one thing on scowl shirt in some limited portland. I thought he was actually decent. I thought he's athletic. He's good at both ends ends of the floor. It means he's not going to change a franchise around but I think he's he's a play. It was still some potential there. How many centers the Hawks and they've got dwayne deadman Now and obviously starting five of senators right now cadman Bruno Fernando scale and Damian Jones. "Works and you'll listen depending on what happens if a team makes a big move or whatever may go to a specific market. We'll see what the trades are but But check make sure you check that out because it'll be I think we'll you know we'll be live right after it happens giving you initial breakdowns of everything that went down all right. That's it now. I know I got this and then we have our own. NBC Boston at Eight o'clock or seven o'clock at night. And then I have the trade with are we with mcdonagh from eleven to one. We're going to have I think Caramba or it's going to happen in the morning. We're going to have mcdonagh a little bit later so probably around noon to Reno as get really close to the deadline. Then we'll take a couple of wait until until wait until the deadline happens and we're going to come back live right at three o'clock with mcdonagh ready to go. Yeah now it'll be fun. It'll be a lot of fun I'm excited. I mean you know I. I hope that you know the deadline. Sometimes it's a dud. God you know we've had more traits years and others and but I do feel like there are a lot like all of the contending teams really need pieces I mean you. Look at the Lakers. The clippers and we'll talk about this with mcdonagh mcdonagh come up and a little bit. The clippers are there's been reports out there that they're worried about their starting five. They want to add a big. They WANNA add center. There's been talk about about drumming. There's obviously Capellas on the market There's there's a bunch of different things and obviously the Lakers are team that you know. They've been rumored to be traded to like half. The League seems like a lot of the big contending teams are are trying trying to make moves and we'll break it all down for you coming up at three o'clock eastern on Thursday but Let's do this because we will do all the stuff in about twenty minutes with mcdonagh preview and everything but I do Wanna I wanna get some of his stuff. That happened last night. Did you see so I if there was a report. This is from David. Aldridge covers the NBA teeth. He said that Andrea Dala as we approach this deadline says he's ready to sit out and not reports of the grizzlies if he's not traded at the deadline there's going and the grizzlies have said basically there's not going to be a buy out. We you want to get an asset for EGWA dollar and goodall saying well if you don't you better not keep me around because I wanna go. I WANNA go play for a contender. Essentially and that and that report happened earlier in the day and then later in the day there were fireworks from the inside that Memphis Grizzlies locker room. Dillon Brooks one of their one of their salary. One of their better players comes and starts talking about how basically they don't want him they don't want dollar in the locker room. This is from Mark Jean Auto on twitter. And this is quoting grizzlies. Guard Dillon Brooks. He said quote first time I seen him on TV talking about it doesn't even matter Andrea Go. Dollar is a great player. But I feel like he's doing the right thing for his career but we really don't care. It's not a distraction at all. I'll laugh at that type of stuff a guy that's on our team that doesn't want to be on our team. I can't wait till we find a way to trade him so he can play him and show him really what Memphis this is all about fighting. Words Gal let's go so we talked about this earlier in the season like if they didn't reach a trade where they would come and play. We talked about that with mcdonagh. It seems like Ah those grizzlies guys. They don't want any part of the dollar on this team. Why would you like you can't do that? I can tell Ryan mcdonagh that I said Ryan if view hired me the one thing I might not be good. GM might not be good at evaluating talent. I might not be good at a lot of things but I know this one if your team is having success us right now and then you take the guy who didn't want to be there and all of a sudden now he wants to be there. That is a bad move for you. That's bad for coacher and everything that happens after that that'd be blamed on and it would consequently be blamed on the GM for making that happen so there is no way I could ever be a discussion. Now if I'M MEMPHIS I'd be careful here only because you know it would always like really respected around the league especially as a role player and all that stuff. He's glorified role player right. He's he's a guy that really could take. There's every team out there that are suitors Eurodollar because they want to win a championship and they know that he can perform at that level. But if you you if this does not if this ends disastrous it could hurt you in the future for free agents. I think I kind fine. Listen I I get it as a business you WANNA. You're like you have a job to do. You gotta do your job and all that stuff but in this situation. It's not worth it like you going down the road of like Nah Man. We're not gonNA give oxygen and placate the would Allah. That's not ultimately worth it like placating to me like we're going to do our best to get you traded at not just the buyout market or whatever we can do from it right that's like You want to say hey you know what Memphis. That's good people over there. They did it right at the end. I wanted to go to a contender. They had a young team and they were willing to help me man and and you come out and say it you can put it on social media. All that stuff memphis is still like. Don't believe that you're now in this position where for Yankees are GONNA come. Flocking to Memphis is because you've got job rant and Jaren Jackson Junior. It doesn't work like that so I get it. I'm I love their team a lot I do but you you WanNa make sure that things leave with a guy like this amicably not disastrously in. I think they're fine right now. They're fine right now. Depending on how this unfolds you want to say Yeah Memphis treated me right like that's you want him to back. Okay you gotTa Watch out for this Job Moran this guy's legit. I've been watching whatever whatever you want that stuff you want to say that you want him to say those things remember what he did last before free agency. He was like pin every single person. Who where they're gonna go and all this stuff don't think he's not connected very connected? I agree and I you know. Here's the thing you've got josh quote tweeted that tweet with Dillon Brooks quote you know with the screaming base emoji essentially echoing. What doing is saying and then written Jamarat last night people were looking through his likes he liked to tweet? That just said Fuck Ebola so clearly clearly not a well like I don't know because they've probably probably never I mean have they ever even met the guy he's never reporters I don't even know if he's if they've ever been met the guy I understand why these young Grizz like screw this guy like who would like you know he comes in here. You're disrespecting US doesn't want to be here. I I understand why they would take offense to that but I also totally understand Perspective listen etc got traded from the war it it was essentially a cash dump. I mean that's what it was and the Grizzlies got to pick. The Grizzlies are going to get a future. First Round pick whether it's twenty twenty four twenty two thousand twenty five twenty six one of those years. They're going to get a first first round pick from the from the warriors that's the reason they made that trade not dollar. They didn't want it. I mean I don't think they wanted a dollar. I mean they just wanted to get the asset and get the picking so if I'm Immigra- Dallas perspective. I'm going listen and this is by all reports. They have told him we will figure it out. We will find a way. Don't report we'll figure out a way to sort of make this thing work out for all parties. So I'm I'm not gonNA sit here and blame Andrea Gua dollar for not showing up either so while I understand. The Young Grizzlies are upset. Ecuador is one hundred percent doing the right thing here. And he's clearly had conversations with this grizzlies team also the rumors about him. Not showing up. SCALL- there's reasons why that wouldn't happen. I mean I. I hope he doesn't get to this point because it could get ugly but to my understanding standing if he does not show up the rest of the year he would not only forfeit six million dollars of salary which is obviously a ton of money but he also lose the right to be a free agent this summer. So there's a lot on the line here and we'll get into a little bit more than that. Why because he if they really wanted him to show up and he didn't show up technically that that would violate the CBA in a way? And I'll let mcdonagh to clear this up because I was reading this on twitter last night from some people and he'll know better than I do but to my understanding that would jeopardize his him being a free agent this summer number which obviously I don't think he he doesn't want to be stuck there he doesn't want you know this you know. He doesn't want to have his future be completely unknown. So hopefully they're able to work something out they've been steadfast and saying we are going to get an asset for Andre Dollar. The question is what is that asset. And if you don't get what you liked you still pull the trigger just to make him happy so hopefully something gets worked out but I understand both sides of this. I understand why the players are mad but I understand why is probably thinks he's in the right but I mean he's not in the right I don't I'm not gonNA he's here he's in the right but what I understand. It's Memphis was fine with him not reporting earlier. Yeah so they can't trade him like why is he all of a sudden now they want him around. I don't understand from Memphis standpoint. What are they doing? I totally agree. But why don't you think he's in the right though like because they clearly had a mutual agreement seems like they had a mutual agreement that they would figure this thing out get higher up thirty thousand. You're getting paid to work. You should go to work right at this. It's a special circumstance. Ask those scalise. I agree I agree I agree. I know I'm with you but you know one in this world when your boss says you should work today to this is now I'm cool. I'm not gonNA work today. Even if it was agreed upon like they said. Hey don't worry about it we're GONNA try to trade you cool. Don't worry about it we're GONNA we may buy you out. We may not cool..

"grizzlies" Discussed on The NBA Show

"A super secret project that they will bring you you in the near future. But with me from Texas our first of two guests from Texas he is the brand Clark to my Taylor Jenkins it. Is Jonathan Arcs. What's up on ice? I doing man I am great. How're you am loving the Grizzlies Jenkins coach of the year? Let's get going. Yeah we'll get to the Grizzlies Grizzlies on today's episode. We're GONNA talk a bunch about the mid season or the NBA at the mid-season point. I think officially today is the halfway point of the twenty nineteen eighteen twenty season. We have five questions for sharks. That are the most interesting ones going forward in the second half according to me and then eventually really we will bring on Rob Mahoney for his first appearance on the ringer. Mba show that's big. I'll yeah a little bit more in depth about the bucks to seal their Justin. Yeah he's he's a big get for us you know. I took a lot to really commit them. The CAMMAN midseason acquisition Ari go perfect. So let's talk about these grizzlies sharks last night. One of the more exciting games that I've washed a very long time They took it to the Rockets Jami rant had a dazzling play pretty much every two seconds and that that ended up being the grizzlies six win a row they are now pretty solidly in that eighth spot in the Western Conference and to me I think they look like probably the best team in that pretty tight race toward the bottom of the West. So let's get to our first question for you are the the grizzlies for real I think so. I think they found something. I don't think they're going to fall back too much from here. How much they actually make this number? Eight seed bottle. Think they're gonNA be where they thought they were. That started the season. Yeah I think my biggest takeaway from last night was just. How measured immature? They are despite the fact that the core of their team team comes from incredible. Young Players Moran is obviously a rookie. Jaren Jackson Junior and his second year and even Brandon. Clark is playing significant minutes for them. He's also rookie. It just feels like they've already put together a team that is able to match up with a lot of different teams. It seems like they have a very versatile roster sir and also kind of wise beyond their years job was just like Kinda going at harden at one point Where Harden Kinda slumped off of him? I think on a screen and judges like drilled. A top of the key three and. We're just like don't do that like us. Much more. Profane words but He's already playing like a superstar and I think that's really encouraging aging to see not only going forward with this core but perhaps throughout the rest of the second half all the pieces fed really well together which is really impressive for a young team when you're talking and slack last night about the kings and the grizzlies and I feel like John De Aron Fox are fairly similar players but you look at their teams right. The ahrends playing with the bunch of older guys not a lot of floor spacing the game a little slower has not get to the rim whereas jaws playing at a fast pace system. He has three point points shooting everywhere around him even though jaws not shooting a lot of threes. He doesn't have to on this team because they space before him. And he can find the actual shooters. Yeah I I think the kings are particularly good comp because it does feel like the Grizzlies are becoming the kings of this season. Right and I think it's really interesting. That amongst the teams that we all expected to perhaps take a mini leap the young teams that have a star or soon to be star. And perhaps those are the teams James that would like crack into a seat. I'm thinking about the Sohn's thinking about the kings. I'm thinking about the timber wolves and all of a sudden the grizzlies who we all expected to be a couple of years away. They've it Kinda leaped ahead of those teams and even if they don't get the a seed I do feel like they have perhaps the brightest future of any of those teams just considering doing Just like what they've been able to build like how they could just really only need juice supplementary pieces around this Moran Jaren Jackson Core They Bill One guy that I think you're particularly excited on. This is a very charges pick. Is the Anthony. Melton can also forgot the third member of the core three here. Well Brendan Clarke has to be in there. So for big four melons the fourth so they basically had a challenge trade With the sons in in which they gave von Carter right to the songs. Well really what it was. The sons were dumping Josh Jackson Salary. Right and everyone when was like Oh man. If the grizzlies can get Josh Jackson. Going top five pick but I think what really happened. Was the grizzlies wanted the Anthony. Melton the whole time which no one's no one really saw coming and like these numbers his numbers they they. Don't even implausible. So check this out. Justin when imbalance on the floor the Grizzlies Lis our plus twelve this season when mel was off the floor there minus seven Chessen nineteen points net rating. That's like Lebron Leonard. Like Janis like numbers. It's unbelievable yeah. That's super surprising. Especially because you'd expect Back core of Melton Moran to cause a lot of issues in terms terms of spacing. Now Yeah I mean. Melbourne is a six foot two shooting guard. Who doesn't shoot threes? So you look at them. You're like what's his place in the League League. You can see why fell the second rounds but I think this is where you can see the value of narrating because different world like five years ago you might see someone. Oh you know in Belton makes great play. Whatever who cares? Bench player doesn't matter but the numbers speak for themselves and when he's on the floor he just it's it's bizarre man. He just seems to always be in the right place at the right time. Whether it's offense or defense I was looking at the one numbers. He does have her as steal and block numbers he kind of play the a much bigger player he creates a lot of fast breaks by turnover team over and the open of Floria makes great passes you make right decisions to. He's just really he's one of the most you need players in the NBA. And it's freaking amazing. How good he's been and really just run started when he got in the rotation early December? That's really changed for that right. It definitely helps that John. John Moran is shooting threes. Well he's up to forty one percent on the season which I think is is surprising for anyone who watched him in college. Everyone expected I think charge. You wrote about this. When he's still at Murray State? We expected them to struggle from three point line. Still shooting them at low volume but that's encouraging and it helps you know be like you're able to play Mellon perhaps it's even more when you have that Dillon Brooks and other guy who's really taken a leap this year. Obviously he was involved in the infamous Brooks non-trade. That happened last year. Where are the brooks brothers? Brothers right. It seemed like the Grizzlies would end up with Kelly oubre way and I think earlier this season and everyone was looking at Uber as fast. Start thinking man. What if the grizzlies had him? He'd be a great fit on the wing. But all of a sudden brooks healthy. He's playing more shooting thirty Six percent from three point land and he does feel like a just a critical part of that rotation I think altogether though I'm most encouraged just because a a lot of young teams. Everyone talks about identity. Like who are they. How are they gonNA play like really like how do they fit into the fabric of the League? I think the best thing that the grizzlies have going for them is they immediately have an identity. They once had grit and grind. But now this is just like running gun and you could see that they play with this just like energy and spirit for it and you have to credit if not Jackson than definitely mirant for dice. Feels like this team plays like a mirant team and that's super encouraging. If you're just like trying to build build something from the ground up I mean really Jenkins but let's all those years. I guess it's like you know maybe it can be like fast and furious the exact opposite of grit and grind right yet instead of a slow it down team at Super Super Fast Right. It's the complete opposite and yet there's something at the core that feels very familiar. Feels like there's just something there it's like it's spirit energy. I don't know what it is but like it definitely feels like they play with a charisma right right and it provides almost armor for a young team where you probably think that you could play against the spurs the rockets and the words. You know what I mean. He had identified with a lot of confidence and the way they play. I guess maybe it's like they kind of dictate the style of the game just right when it was grit and grind. We're GONNA make if you play slower and now like they're so fast spread the floor so well and they're pretty aggressive on defense so they kind of make you spread. They make you play faster. There was a game against the spurs where it was like one thirty five one. Twenty five and the Spurs one around the but they had no choice but to push the taste of all time the grizzlies right and so now a team that we all expected to be pretty significant sellers at the deadline considering that they have two players that a lot of contenders probably cut it in Jae crowder and then Andre Iguodala who who is somewhere in the bay. Probably Reading Steve Jobs biography right now golfing right now all of a sudden. I you wonder if the grizzlies flipped the other way and they're a team that could be looking to add pieces now. The good thing is interesting. I tweeted last night. I got off of of Out of retirement on the twitter's and fired off breaking news guy. I know but isn't Andrew and by the way I got a I got an RT from our guy. Isaac who who is nursing. Is this divider between right now through injury but thank you for for contributing with that. "And they denied the grizzlies of the national championship. But quite a career for Cleveland Jackson. Our third in dot the is Bruce Perkins who played football here for the grizzlies and what a career he had as he sophomore nineteen eighty-seven. He ran for three hundred and ninety two yards on fifty three carries in a game against Hutchinson. How about that against rivals Hutchinson? Bruce Perkins that season. He also ran for two hundred ninety yards. You can start city two hundred and eighty nine yards against garden city two hundred and fifty five yards against fort, Scott and his total rushing yards. His sophomore year. Nineteen eighty-seven for Bruce. Perkins was two thousand one hundred and forty six yards. Second all time at Butler football, only two Rudy. Johnson who went on to have great career in the NFL pretty Johnson new single season rushing leader at two thousand two hundred and twenty four yards should that in one thousand nine hundred nine but Bruce Perkins. Who's here today with his wife and his mom and dad and some youngsters he's here all the way from Phoenix Arizona for this honor today and after playing at Butler Perkins went on to play at Arizona state in the Pac eight back then Pac ten thousand yards total offense and scored four touchdowns. He also played in the NFL for two years playing in sixteen games and scoring two touchdowns in one thousand nine hundred ninety with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And he played in fourteen games in ninety one with the Indianapolis Colts in the Cindy Benitez, the women's soccer team also being inducted today. And she's the most recent of the athletes she came to Butler from garden city and immediately made an impact for the grizzlies. She is still the all time leading scorer at Butler with one hundred and ninety eight point. Points in soccer. She scored eighty three goals, which is also the best in Butler history, and she had thirty two assists, which is tied for fifth in program history. So the grizzlies rebel lure here from. Cindy bonito's from garden city, and she's been inducted today in the hall of fame here at the power plant for the grizzlies in the final inductee today is the late Raymond Chris Riemann, Chris and his wife, Betty, Chris longtime grisly backer boosters, and they have really donated a tremendous amount of money charity to the college into the athletic department in they have just been wonderful supporters grizzly backers, and it was actually Raymond Chris who was really kind of the leading the drive behind the annual mountain moisture feed, which has become the butter grizzlies number one way of raising money for the athletics every year, and that'll be coming up coming up on Friday, March twenty ninth this year here in Eldorado at the community center at five PM. But it was Raymond Chris. And his wife, Betty, Chris. They really kind of came up with the original idea to have the mountain moisture fee. Just one of the many contributions, Raymond the late, Raymond, Chris and his wife. Eddie Kris making to Butler community, college and the athletic department. We'll take a break here. "So it's not like, they're just like, no, no, no, no, no, we reviews to embrace this kind of modernization of the game is more of there being selective. And then if you have. That aid for ten quarter. And then the other team has to go back and say okay now we have to chase all these three point line Papas laughing knowing lamarcus, I'm pretty sure the next three four five possessions. You're going to be all by yourself. So just go get, you know, and that's just of how it works. So interesting to watch thoughts play interesting to see if they're active at the deadline. The tend to be a very popular buyout market in. So adding anyone of a defense a profile that can him help them, especially on the wing. The Dante ring there for sure, but they they all play hard. Whether it's undersize, you know, the bread Forbes, or whether it's old in a way slower than he used to be Marco bell analogy, or what have you that was sports fans as you ten years ago, but what have been called a tweeter? But you know, what if he gets stuck against the post he's giving up twenty pounds. He fights like hell present on the perimeter. He's going to be on the balls of his feet easily trying to cut you off in and not let you get the shots that you want. So the work is there the effort is there and oftentimes they can collectively even create traps and force the ball out of where the other team must do. It takes all five guys. So going to be interesting to see of Inc. Most of the other teams that have real the Western Conference, or like, you know, I kinda hope they don't really figure it out because it's just this will be one more team someone's going to have to deal with on the play offs, and that, you know, two weeks from when the in the seasons happening as me looking at shall we try to be a little strategic here. Knock it lined up with the Spurs because we see what they can do. Okay. We'll take a break and talk about a team that's has their season kinda heading for me very much the direct opposite direction the Memphis grizzlies..

"Rundown by Ryan Carter for Colby. They call time out. So they'll inbound with shot clock turned off. They can hold on this ball for one final shot. We'll see what they do. Play. They have drawn up. The inbound the ball in the back court run down by word low. We're low cross a time line on the left side. Loose defense by few shot clock is off fifteen on the game clock tied sixty eight sixty eight word low way up top crossover dribble drive kicks out right corner. Carter fakes three now. Backs out at three on the way. No, good rebound by the grizzlies. But they lose it and a whistle. What's the ball out of bounds? Currently the grizzlies call timeout. Apparently the grizzlies call timeout. Who's volatile? Whose ball is? I guess it's is it the grizzlies fall. The grizzlies got a time out off at miss by Carter. Deep on the right corner. And it look like somebody knocked the ball away from the grizzlies mofficials blow, the whistle and said, no, they call timeout before the ball was knocked away. So a huge break there for the grizzlies the grizzlies now with a chance to win it with a shot clock turned off sixty eight sixty eight here at the power plant. Timeouts left for Butler one left for Colby. Who do you set up here the grizzlies head coach Brian Miller? Leading the way the grizzlies is Jade Lee with a game high twenty five twelve in the first half thirteen in the second half. Right down to the wire Jayhawk conference basketball. Rusty graph all the head coach of the Colby, Trojans, pacing back and forth. Like an expectant father right in front of us here. Got his nice suit on arms folded now grizzlies will have to go ninety four feet. So there's two point four seconds to go two point four seconds to go. And Dennis's looking at the inbound they're gonna have to go ninety four feet in two point four seconds to go..

And that was my first real like something that, you know, part of my big tendon or anything like that other one was when I had to blow out fracture my face kind of had to do that to fix fix me. "And now the low post welcome to the low post podcast live from an undisclosed hotel conference room somewhere in New York City where we are thrilled to be joined for the second time by Memphis grizzlies point guard. Mike Conley how you doing? I'm doing. Well. How you I'm hanging in good. That's on the second kid. Thank you. Thank you. A whirlwind can say that. I I'm afraid of it. I live in fear of it. I can barely. I could barely handle my own life. Let alone the lives of two small children. Yeah. It changes things changes the second one. I introduce you as Mike Conley. When you were drafted David Stern said Michael Conley? When did Michael give way to Mike? Do you want people to call you Michael still? I don't know when Mike came out, you know, Michael has been my name forever. And in college, I guess latter part of the year just my came out. And and I thought it would change when Mr. Starr said Michael Comey, Michael again, and now Mike Mike the rest of micro. No one. I dare is never Michael Conley anymore. I over this done and part, you know, starting to get rid of the junior. Then you know, that which I don't know where the junior came from before I'm the second technically, but the junior popped up out of nowhere. I was actually thinking about that walking over here being like, I'm going to introduce them as Mike Conley. And then I'll ask about Michael we used to be my colleague junior. That's not a thing anymore either. Crazy Evelyn of your name. Speaking of college. I was going to ask you this later, but you brought up college you met your your now wife in college. True or false. She did not know who you were when you met her gosh true. She did not know who I was college basketball star Michael Conley junior or the second at no idea who, you know, idea we met each other at like. A little hangouts by right outside of our dorm. And then a week later ran into her at the dang on water fountain of getting some power eight or some out of the drink machine. And she was doing the same thing. I looked at him like. I know you, and that's when we finally exchanged numbers and the rest is history. Your first day it was to applebees. Correct. It was that would be stole. My my buddy, David light. He's car. And because I didn't own one times. I always guard. You know, made a smell good have made it made. It seem like I I was doing big things. I wanted to make fun of you for that. And then I remembered I dated a girl in grad school, and I was probably twenty to our first day. It was the olive garden. I thought it was I thought the olive garden was nice I twenty early onto the olive garden. No big night. No doubt Applebee's was was big for us. So okay. Let's talk about the grizzlies. You played twelve games last season. The team was bad enough to pick number four. How for you? Personally. I saw a couple of times. I know how frustrated we're like how bad was it? And when because there was times or you were maybe on the way to call him beta like what was the low. What was the worst? What was the worst part of the season? I think the worst part was being held in limbo for that time period of about a month where you know, I'm working myself back into it. And I'm like like, yeah, you can be back in two weeks and then another two weeks pass and you'll be back in another two weeks. You know, it's not improving and just kind of getting hung out there. Like, you know, I'm ready to play. I'm ready to play. I feel like I can go, and then things aren't working out and turned a little bit fed a little bit more clarity. When they said, hey, you're you're out. You know, you need to have surgery. This is what this the route. We gotta go. I kind of have peace with that. And then just now deal with the the struggles of the season as far as our team and just focus on that..

Some late personnel changes by the grizzlies and a time out call by Butler because too many men on the field. Grizzlies were forced to call a timeout. So the grizzlies burn one of their three second-half timeouts there. Too many men on the field. Ninety three to go in the third quarter. Grizzlies men's basketball team with a home game tonight at seven o'clock there at the power plant lady grizzlies are in a tournament up in Nebraska winners last night to improve to six and older lady grizzlies. Here's a third and five at their own forty six to run the wildcat. And this is west and west is not habit. His offense of Lyman tried to pull him across the line of the first down marker. But he didn't get it. Pollard with tackle we've called his name a lot today. Are they gonna go forward here? It's fort down in two. It looks like they're gonna go for this'll be the second time today. They're going for four down near midfield in the wildcat is west west takes the snap. And he is hit and the pile is trying to carry them across and it did not he didn't get it. The pile went forward, but the ball carrier west was left behind and the grizzlies hold on fourth into and they will take all over at the garden city forty nine yard line. How about that? Let's see if that's sparks the grizzlies offense. So Jeff SIMS who roll the dice on a fourth one in the first half of is on forty goes forward here on fourth and two. Near midfield and the grizzlies stop them. I believe it was Jacoby Jones was in on the tackle. So they ran the wildcat with their tailback Charles.

"grizzlies" Discussed on The Hoop Collective

"H told him on a trip to san antonio just doesn't feel right without mike writes ribs so i was you know i'm not gonna lie i was disappointed i was uh heartbroken i was absolutely dismayed i felt betrayed how 'bout that do we were busy we had a lot of stuff going on in of humor about to get into that yes speaking of heartbroken speaking of but trade speaking of the reason i was in san antonio well it was because the memphis disgraces were there fresh off the firing of media darling david fees dale and fellas i knew the relationship with mark the saul was frosty i i didn't realize until fizz got fired that it hit deteriorated to the point where memphis management felt like it was a one or the other route um and you know it's really it's an interesting situation because finns was otherwise extremely popular in that locker room i i mean loved matlock and and you've seen uh you know from his previous stop you seen support from guy as like lavrov from guys like you wait i mean that's how i would say everybody but one of the grizzlies felt about adam but martin souls the best player and meal marked the sole is is kind of the franchise player special with mike conley deal with injuries and they lost eight straight an look fizz did escalate the thing i mean fits visit digital white diffuse where management felt like okay we we've got a we got stepped in here because when you bench your franchise player for the fourth quarter of a winnable game again at home against the brooklyn mets when you've got a losing streak going you are kind of daring management to uh to do something about it i think we should dare them to do is say hey why don't you two guys get into in into a room in work it out should have happen i mean that was established that was terrible management's part and yet you know for me i think you almost alienate marcus saw with the rest of the guys in the locker room because they did loaf is there.
