Republic Records to Cease Using 'Urban' Term

"Dark lane demo tape straight along with Ariana Grande post Malone and the weekend just a few of the marquee pop acts signed to the label Republic records so that's important because earlier this week Republic announced that it will no longer be using the term urban and it's official messaging they're the only ones changing their stance on this word this week the Grammys announce they will be changing their best urban contemporary category two best progressive R&B that's just one of the ways the institutions are making changes to how to use the word van so why are all these announcements around that word important how many first off what's the story behind the word urban in this context yes urban was a term that was coined by Frankie Crocker who was a DJ at W. PLS which is new York's black radio station and he wanted a word that describes black music without using the word black which might have alienated his non black audience there was no ill intent behind the words he just wanted to describe the sound of his radio station but now the word is become a point of contention especially because it's a rather narrow and dismissive way to describe black artists it's a way to write black music office needs should kind of put it in the quarter and it's limiting because it lumps artists and all of these distinct categories like art your crops and hip hop and jazz into one narrow category and how many I was always informed that it was a good a forbidden word like it's a word you're not to say but it's it's more complicated than that ran yeah I mean given the history of black artists being shot out of a job is that the prior year it happened at rock and roll just talked about it happening in country music there's been this desire and a need to declare some ownership and distinguish that celebrate black music so some people have been using the word urban in that fashion I'm I think there's always been a struggle in terms of how to do that without marginalizing bought black audiences how to claim ownership over black music but still make it includes Sam so the word urban isn't all bad but the way it's being used in modern times to dismiss or limit black artists certainly

"There is a story that Elizabeth cotten got to name herself on the day. She started school. Her parents had a mess of kids and supposedly. They never really agreed on a name to call her when she was born in eighteen. Ninety three or eighteen ninety-five people disagree on birthdate. Which makes sense considering that she'd didn't even have a name anyway. The family just kinda settled into calling her little sister because she was the youngest sister. Of course a moniker. Like that didn't work for the teacher. Who asked for the child's name on the first day of school little sis had always liked the name Elizabeth? So that's what she told the teacher her name was and for the rest of her long and eventful life. That's how she was known though. Many of her friends would one day call her by nickname Lib. Little could she have known when she was just a girl that the name Elizabeth Cottonwood one day wind up in the Smithsonian be announced at the Grammy Awards and even lend itself to a Beautiful Park in Syracuse New York? There's another story about Elizabeth. Many years later as an adult and apparent herself she was working in a department store in Washington. Dc when she encountered a young girl near the same age. Elizabeth had been on that first day of school. This girl was lost and in tears because she had gotten separated from her mother while shopping as any child or parent who has stressful. He lived through. This situation knows it can be terrifying. But Elizabeth was kind and calm and the girl named Peggy immediately trusted her together. The two set out to find the girl's mother it didn't take long. But the chance encounter made history. Elizabeth cotten obviously made an impression on. Peggy's mom a woman named Ruth Crawford seeger because before long Elizabeth was working in their home helping to take care of the three kids cook and clean. They quickly bonded with her and she made the most of her time there. The seekers were a musical family. Father Charles was a musicologist that someone who studies music and how it develops in different cultures he worked for universities and the federal government to help document and preserve the music of African American native American Latin American cultures and more. The mother of the Family Ruth was a music teacher who published a book of Children's songs and the children were very interested in folk music especially the oldest child his name was Pete Seeger and he would be famous musician on his own for years. Elizabeth would share space in the home with the Family. Who's world seem to revolve around making sound? Someone was always learning practicing listening writing or singing. Something new little. Did they know that the woman in their midst was incredible musician herself honestly? Though she was so humble she might never have told them wouldn't stay hidden forever. Though as the days flowed by someone from the family found her playing one of the guitars in the home and in a very unique style that they had never really heard before embarrassed. She apologized for touching their instrument but they were more astonished by what they had just heard. Linda's family back home. In North Carolina had been musical to when she was a girl. Her folks sang spirituals. All the time and her brother had a guitar and Banjo. Which only seem to call to Elizabeth. Whenever he was at work she would sneak into his marvelous sounds. This made her brother angry and she was firmly told not to touch them again but she couldn't help herself. Elizabeth loved the sound of the string instruments. She found them awkward because she was left handed though her solution was to hold them upside down. Putting the low sounding strings. Closer to the grand high-sounding strings. Right up by her face was the opposite way that the instrument was intended but she made it work. She plucked the strings with her fingers. Two or three at a time which could create a counterpoint melodic lines at the same time. It's not easy to do but Elizabeth methodically learned to do it. When her brother's work schedule allowed of course eventually her brother moved out to start a life outside of the household and he had the nerve to take his own guitar and Banjo with him. This left poor young Lib and quite a dither.

Good one but that's an awesome Butler broke up as we know last week so it could have been sooner than that but we found out last week week. They were together for nine years. We had a bad feeling about this. And now Vanessa Hudgens has certainly moved on with Kyle Kuzma. Yes so Vanessa and Kyle Kuzma. Matt were spotted on Tuesday. They were having a fancy dinner in Brooklyn at Lilia. The fancy pasta place that everybody posts on Instagram and TMZ has pictures of them. Obviously somebody in the restaurant of pictures of them and it seems it's like they're just maybe having a good time hanging out together and then. She went to the Lakers game Wednesday night I played at MSG and she was there route. One on those Lakers selfie slide full selfie slide Ashi posted multiple pictures. I on Instagram at the game. And she's clearly disowning it also. She just owning instagram. She posted such a hot picture earlier. Like Vanessa is really diving evident here. Maybe if if it didn't work out awesome Butler workout Austin Butler. I wanted to was rooting for them. But clearly they just Vanessa Hudgens is also. I feel like every time I look at our instagram. This this is not meant to be an insult but she is almost like thirty four million instagram instagram followers. And every time. I'm surprised by that. I don't know why push she like. She is a mega famous. But I feel like I feeling not. Everybody knows who Vanessa hudgens is. It's Kinda like well I don't know because I'm obviously. Selena Gomez is way bigger but at one point Selena Gomez was the most followed person on instagram. Right right and to me that was outrageous. Yeah truthfully like what did you think that was normal. No no did it make a lot of sense. It didn't make sense but maybe not I feel like I'm less aware of SELENA's international national presence like I think Selena has a massive international presence and I I don't does Manasseh hutchins cool news. Maybe people really just I mean in high school musical was Disney and like Yeah Gomez. They're all right. That's true I mean that's fans for life like idea. Yeah Yeah you know. I love high school musical when I was. I don't know eight years old. I was and I still love high school musical also. I'm still a fan of those people. Yeah we'll see what happens because the Lakers play The nets tonight in Brooklyn. So if you've NASA showing up again for night to she gave you the network I dunno by what assume she she has I would think maybe she has a spot somewhere and la perfect. She's been in New York a lot recently. So it's very possible and what. Hey Tomlin move on right. I mean heels like it's soon see now. The Charles Melton theories out the window so people started thinking that maybe they were together and then they were commenting on each other texture. She was commenting a heart. So people are like ooh. What does this mean but clearly nothing? Nothing yeah I and also you know not to make this super petty again but getting photographed graft on a date with an NBA player. Like right after a break up you know just better than to show. You're moving on you're hawk. Modesty don't take me for granted. Maybe she was feeling like she was taken for granted a little bit. I mean this is not like a you know we were automatically assuming awesome Butler Butler us. Awesome Butler could be crying at home right now. You can so upset. Yeah I like Austin Butler. I'M GONNA choose to keep Liking Austin Butler and then when this Elvis film comes Out really decide if I like true. That's very true but I feel like a fun fun fling with an NBA NBA player. Great Great Way to judge. They're not around. She now young young like they're not going to be boyfriend and girlfriend for Lionel. He's twenty four. Yeah this one. This is screams rebound to me totally fun rebound well from the real question it to pick up on that. I didn't get it either. But that's that's how good it was. That was a good one. Jerseys the whole night and the staple center yes. She had a very difficult task. And I think she nailed it definitely. There wasn't any perfect way to handle this. No obviously but I think that she did the best job that she yeah exactly. Especially you know what happened at Hours before the show even started. I'm sure they had some whole other plan that they had to scrap of course and once Alicia had this moment Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani performed and boy did I feel bad for that. Yeah that just they. He should've I'm sorry but like scrap. The performance have Lake Shelton and Gwen and I noticed. Sounds whoever came. Just don't have that performance which leads me to my the point that there's entirely in too many performances during the grammy awards. I know it's about the music and the award show. I WanNa see the awards. It's eleven forty five at night and we're announcing the the last word. I know that you WANNA like Lizotte. Opened the show to Eliza did a fantastic job. "And his daughter Jonah and all of those that are that have been tragically lost today. You are in a spirit. They're in our hearts and our prayers there in this building and I would like to ask everybody so take a moment and just hold them inside of you hold them inside of you and share our strength and support with their families. We never imagined a million years. We'd have to start the show like this. Never never never never never never so so we wanted to do something that could describe a tiny bit. How feel right now? She brought up boys to men to sing and it was so beautiful. And I think you know there wasn't a dry eye in the house. They had Kobe's Jersey had a spotlight on Kobe. "Here's thank you guys so much refreshing podcasts. So last night was the Grammy Awards Like we talked about in the the intro. Obviously it was very different. It had a more sad tone to it obviously They were playing tribute to Kobe. which was Handled Amazing Bio Shaquille. I WANNA start off by saying that like Lisa Keys. Just a marvelous human being human being human being so much poise. Grace meaning shot her. She is the she's the perfect person for that for that situation We less our with the with some some carpet stuff before we get into into the actual show like we said props everyone who worked this carpet. I feel like it was just incredibly hard. Incredibly difficult to to balance Having Fun but also respecting what just happened and and honoring Kobe So we had some some great looks we had some interesting looks Arianna Guerande. We start with her went full kind of Cinderella ballgown just absolutely enormous dress. The pictures of her like sitting in this dress real like made me laugh like how. How do you how do you get around to that thing? I have the idea but I loved his. She'll just an absolute clean. If you you have to have the confidence to be like I'm gonNA wear that dress. The grammys I'm GONNA sit on the red carpet. I'm with sit into this dress oppose. It was her night she was she was wearing this dress and then she had a second dress. Yeah I liked the outfit change more. I think go most really. I didn't like the office yet. I liked the first one better I thought the second one was still cute. Yeah it resembled the first one. Yeah kind of I saw people were applying comforter. Did it seemed very colourful. Looked like I WANNA snuggle rhyming. She'd been sweatpants under that thing. No one will. We don't know like she's as you know but I was thinking we were going to have like a lady Gaga met gala moment. Where like she would continue to just like take off layers of this this coun- as the evening went on and would end up in like some super cute like jumpsuit of some sort you now or whatever once you had the second change I was like? Oh yeah she's GonNa take going to be like pants and but she had a few more changes throughout than yeah. Yeah wearing a green dress that I saw I loved. I think I loved Oliver. Looks I one took my breath away. Though the first time I saw Then we have the Jonas Brothers of course yeah. All three of them were Rockin. I don't even know how to purdue. Greib what they they were wearing but sometimes I love their red carpet looks and sometimes I'm like Oh for the love of God what is that. What did you feel about not this one? I liked it. I liked it. There are like I thought they looked cool. They looked fashionable. Actually think Kevin look the best. Yes I feel like I really. I really liked Kevin Yell suit. Kevin and Danielle stole the show. Turner's yes you know. I just feel like it's kind of looking the same lately. I don't know why the dress last night reminded me of another once. Don't you were recently. And it just wasn't my favorite not that I didn't look bad because she'll gray. It just wasn't ready. I feel like she went like grammy's a little more like punk rock vibes vibes like. She's just she was just at the SAG awards at the awards. She was in this Barbie pink like like long dress. She looked beautiful. But I feel like you know. Maybe she wanted to mix it up. Where some different sh? She did I loved her shoes. I thought they were really cool. Your cashews are really cool. And then Nick and Priyanka you know they look great is always but PRIYANKHA's dress was I thought I thought Priyanka Bianca looked beautiful. She'll glider for the the dress itself was a a lot. There's a lot going on with it. had a very deep v. in the front all the way past her belly. I think she had a lots of boob makeup on felt like contoured the shit out of her cleavage. Her boobs were yeah. I don't know how to describe they rape although the one picture that was just like a little. We'll up-close issues addressed like that. You need to let anytime. It's photographed and needs to be the absolute perfect angle. You know it's just very hard heart like it's hard to pull off a look like that. I think she did pull it off. There's not a lot of people who could pull off that kind of look I. I thought she really looked beautiful. Her hair makeup with stunning. And you know there goes the Jonas brothers and they're beautiful lives just having having tonight. I was very happy to see them on the grammy carpet. Obviously they perform later till we'll talk about that and I thought you know it. It was great. There wasn't too many like Major. I feel like carpet moments Taylor swift. We thought she was. There was rumors that she was going to Halloween. Aleka surprise performance. She didn't go. Yeah Look I will not outfit was conic. It was amazing. This hot pink cowboy. I forgot she was going to be right at the top. Yeah Yeah I really liked. It was like a sleek off-white sat and almost like it was it was really cool. Classes like seemed like a little nineties like it was a very very quick look. I mean obviously was rocking her full Green Gucci like she does I feel like she is. I was just walking. You're watching your walk the carpet I was like how the how tall it like. I feel like she's just so Oh cute and little and I just want to squeeze her looking up right now. Oh she's my height exactly perfect too little that hire me. Yeah they WANNA give her a give her a big hug. People are now going to wonder what my height is. It says she's five three. I'm I'm like five three and career. I would say four my license yet. You always remember when you guys measured me and it turns out I've been lying. Yeah you always Brown yeah. Of course Oh my yeah. I thought she looked so cute. I'm trying to think of Gwen Stefani. Blake Shelton yeah I I think well all I liked gwen dress. I think everybody looked good. There wasn't many absolute standouts. I think billy porter gale L.. Super Cool School is always. I think we should get into. There are a ton of people saying duly. PA looked like I did see that Camille deemed. MD as well being like Ria you are do Alita and honestly I'm honored like thank you. Guys there was I was reading the dams and I was like just stopped because you're flattering. Flattering me way. Too Much Yeah I was honored because I really I was. I looked really nice of you to bring up on your own Nila. That was throne still coming in. So thank you now. I'll take that as a huge compliment. I feel like that's an honor All right let's get into the the actual show which was entirely too long are the grammys I am. I'm always excited for it. But once it hits like eleven fifteen. I'm like Oh my God. We haven't even done the major awards yet. What is going on? Why is this? Why is this happening? There's a lot lot that could be condensed or I don't I don't even know but It was it was fun to watch like we said Alicia keys. He's did a phenomenal job. maybe we put her her speech in here at the beginning because it wasn't really that not long. She summed it up really. Well here we are together on music's biggest night celebrating the artists. That do it best but to be honest with you off feeling crazy sadness right now because earlier today Los Angeles America and the whole wide wide world lost a hero and we're literally standing here heartbroken in the house house that Kobe Bryant builds now colby.

"This topic. She's interviewed Debra Dugan and Harvey Mason Junior you can find her reporting at the NPR our website. And I very strongly recommended. We should note in the interest of full disclosure. That honesty is herself a former grammy voter As well as a committee member in the field of best album notes this was before Anastasia's time NPR. We're talking about a decade ago on. Yeah longtime ago. Yeah all right well. Let's talk about the actual grammy winners Starting with Billy Bush. Yeah who swept all all of the big four categories which is best new artist Song of the year record of the year and album of the year. And it's not for nothing but she's she's the first female artist to ever sweep those four categories. The last time anyone ever did it with Christopher Cross x eighty one for you stat nerds is out there. also also could no guaranteed track record for long-term. It was a strange evening because going into the awards. A really really looked like lizards had the potential to have a huge sweep thing. She led the nominations for the entire year. Little Nasdaq's and Billy I. I wish weren't that far behind her. But in the end Liz only got a couple of the awards and then the ceremony went on and on and on for hours hours and then in the last few minutes billy I took off for the top SPA. Yeah it it did at as you said. Liz Won the first award. In in the telecast for best pop solo performance of for Truth Hearts beating among others billy Bush and earlier in the day Luisa won best traditional rb performance performance and best urban contemporary album. So they gave out a nine awards over. The course of the telecast four went to one went to lose oh the others went to to Dj Callard featuring nipsy Russell and John Legend won for best rap. Sung performance Dan Shea Won. Best Country Duo group performance. A little Nasdaq's exp featuring billy ray Cyrus won. Best Pop duo group performance and tyler. The Creator won best rap album for eager. Yeah and the funny thing thing is that tyler seemed really ambivalent about winning for best rap album to the seemed to indicate that he thought it would be much more comfortable in Dan. Hi Pop music category and that kind of caused back to this real struggle. The Grammy's has had with black music and traditionally Sean you black forms and black artists that there's been a lot of criticism that they subvert those artists into the side categories. Gorey's that are have a big. You know a big box around them saying that you're black then you belong here and that sort of this tonight. What kind of calls back to that in a really uncomfortable way you know if you think a few years ago about beyond say and Adele and you think about Kendrick Hendrick and you think about all these artists who have not quite gotten the shine that people might have expected? It may feel maybe not tyler's album women in particular but It's her raises a lot of those same questions and this is exactly the kind of stuff that the grammys are struggling with. When it comes to inclusivity and diversity this is a fine time for us to talk about performances and moments that we liked and didn't like what were some of your highlights? I have to say there were some really really on point performances tonight lizotte. Starting out was incredible degree. She brought everything tonight. I liked billy. We can talk about that. Maybe that wasn't such a thing. I thought that Rosalia did a great job of introducing who so she is and what she's all about this evening..

"Week. Betray really no I mean this week I was ready. So everybody's favorite time of the year happened this Wednesday grammy nominations. She's war announced bits on Melania and unseasoned. I'm being sarcastic so grammy. Nominations came came out on Wednesday. I just happened to be to see the livestream. This is my thing before I really get into my own personal opinion hip hop speaking everybody hip hop whether you're black white Brown Puerto Rican Asian and if you get their reference. You're really I do hip hop. Why do we continue to be upset? Upset about the grammys every single year. Monsieur I kinda thought. They did a good job last year. I thought they did a good job a yet. y'All find a reason every single year to be mad at the grammys and then come with the same excuse every the grammy's and no valid. We don't need to grammy validation and it every year. y'All get Matt on the Grammy Nominations. Come at you'll be glued to your phone screen and computer screens looking looking at those grammy nomination. So obviously you care what the grammy has to say to some extent so with that being said a lot of people seem to be upset the Megan the stallion and the baby. Why don't they nominated for best new artist? They standing nominations. She got none which I'm shocked talking. She didn't get any but my own personal opinion isn't about why she didn't get any nominations. My unpopular opinion tonight is not for the baby. It's not about the baby. He got his grammy nods. My is more geared toward Meghan. The stallion everybody hollering. She was snubbed for not being nominated in best new artist. I don't think Meghan stallion needed to be grammy nominated for best new artists looking at the category of Rosalia. Billy Irish little nausea six black boomers and Liz. Oh I don't think she needed. I don't think the years she had with great make make undoubtedly had a great year and she had a breakout year for her. But planes. Devil playing devil's advocate. If I'm on the Grammy Board I if I'm on the board I'm looking at it like compared to everybody else compared to Billy Irish did she have was here better than billy. Eyelashes looking at. It was better than Le's X.'s. Yes was it okay. Okay okay who for best new artist. Rosalia Rosalia Billy Irish black boom lack homeless Liz. Liz Naza Luna's aches and I think Maggie Rogers Maggie Rogers. She brought her two major. But that's neither here nor there but if I'm looking at it sitting at the Grammy Board I'm looking like yes. She had a great year. She was everywhere girl someone was even in the NBA Geico commercial. But you know what guy eight little song that was in like eight other commercials like follow the TV shows. And I think the Grammy Board kind of gauged. You that way now. Is that me saying that. She didn't deserve it not saying she didn't deserve it. But you don't always get what you deserve just because you deserve something talking doesn't mean it's going to be given to you. I think the Grammy Board. I think this is just me speculating. They looked at it and say yeah. She had a great year. She had a big year. Sure but compared to Louis who had who now who song now holds the record for longest weeks at number one year wasn't bigger than he is. Compared to Lizardo truth hurts the being number one song and she knocks is from being number one who really knocked exempt from being number one. Did she have a bigger year than these ours. Rosalita from my understanding is huge. Huge there are some people comparing her to Selena. So I'm just saying in that category Black Pumas from Austin I'm not gonNA say no Ma'am I just birds but she probably could make probably could have taken can either black or Maggie Rogers from what I never mentioned. Rogers she gets. It may be okay but I'm just saying looking Eh the field and looking at her year and then looking at the grammy boy grammy probably say she had a great year it just this wasn't groundbreaking. And we kind of already saw this with Cardi Cardi came in. We hadn't had a woman really another woman them into really look at it and rap since you know Nikki entering it and being dominant and now we have this fresh new face and she's breaking ground and and she's doing doing all these wonderful things and she's hot out here and they probably looked at me like where we just saw with. Cardi is not really that impactful. That's just that's just. That's just my speculation. y'All GonNa be mad I'll you won't mind debating it that's just my speculation and her team might right not be that chummy with the Grammy Board. Because the grammys aren't indicative of what the artists do but more so of what the label is willing to do. Or who the label people at the label known in in such and such so third. So you're never wrong. I want to give a shoutout to dear friend of the show Reno Reno. At least Alana's a manager who who will be our break live a second December second. Can't get those tickets it's GonNa be a great interview we we're all cool so I thought lining was wild and it'll be magic's Reno hit me to something that and know before you told. Let me this Cardi in Lisboa assigned to the same label Atlantic. So do I think that is coincidence. That lives Oh got the most nominated. Female rapper no the year after. Carter got the most nominations. Oh Oh the same reason why. Liz had the biggest stage next to Carter ACL. No the grammys are not culturally relevant. First stuff like fresh was saying you look Graham Say Wail Kosovo Soda Get nominated. Because they didn't win. That means that now disappointed should be. That's alive the baby is the most important rookie hip hop artist of this year. And may make my literally naked. Neko's everyone a grammy and J. Cold is one of the most important here bars for the last ten years. Look up to video. When when he lost best when he was nominated for best new artist lost and he loves Yoshi just see his reaction like his face say that all like he looked like he was there suited booting looked like he like? You know I got a good chance. Remember lemonade never won the album of the year re honest anti which is arguably her best In terms of like like conceptually album didn't win anything but like some Greta show on television city. Good Messy didn't win. Any grammys lost all grammies. The macklemore war in Ryan Lewis. WHO wherever they've been at After Graham tweeting basically but I mean Salon Jay Z.. And beyond say all made three albums all inspired I by your and other than what really nobody even had to get up on stage and say wow I wish you went out of the year for twenty four. Whatever she literally said what as we also have to do to win a year? What you have to do this? Her album eliminate inspired me to make this APP portable play into family. Got My arm just flailing Leyland. Just what are you need to do. Anything about color is about what is culturally relevant. Yeah Yeah.

"Elevates talking music real quick. I will say before we before we conclude our Grammy talk just because it's category. Everybody knows me probably the best with for country. I think Dannon Shay did the probably the breakthrough thing this year. So they're nominated for best country duo group. I think they're gonna win that category. And I wouldn't be surprised to see their to Quila also take best country song out because of the success. They had the most interesting part of the Grammy category. Frankly, is that if you're one of the people that really aren't seek country music Chris table, tendon, Casey Musk's are both nominated. I'm a little curious if they're going to split the vote and all of a sudden, we're gonna see a really unexpected win. So in my mind, I don't know that I'm ready to count out mayor and Morris or Keith have been for winning country solo performance, I think marriage should win it. She did the best solo performance this year. So there's your quick your quick rundown on how I think is all gonna play out in the band, jazz kyri. Ring. I got nothing. I got nothing at least he's hosting. How you feel about that real quick? She's going to be great great. And with that we've run out of time. No. Listen if I would buy into a leash Eckes hosting chill as poker night, hell's kitchen. I'm not sure that she's going to I've seen him causing a few times. I'm not sure she's gonna come. You know, what you know, what twenty twenty game fits get it done? Hey, okay. Twenty twenty three that's real estate. Let me twenty four years. I said big goals. That's all I'm saying. All right. Follow her on Twitter at L Dunkin. ESPN follow me at Jason Fitz. Els going to catch a flight to believes because she lives a better life than I do. But coming up Doug kazarian, get it. Now, Doug, you can't take place, but we'll it less, Doug. At least try was interesting stuff coming up next Ellen Fitz. Talking music the hell you won't. Yeah. What up speed a Rosenberg on ninety seven ESPN WWE? I work at this. Tomorrow's just outside Stamford, Connecticut. I also clean up the food court. I'm on Gumri mall in Maryland. But right now when I'm working my food court job, I keep my headphones on and I listened to Ellen Phipps talking music on ESPN. It's fantastic. I promise I promise some expertise you needed at this point. I needed at this point. And I'm a damn Grammy voter like explain. And that to me, I can't figure it out. So there are gambling odds on the Grammy's. And when it comes to stuff like this. I'm always the first to say, hey throat, the white Viking bringing somebody smarter than me. So Doug kazarian joins us. And obviously, Doug you are our expert here, and you and I have known each other for a while. And I'm a mega fan of what you do in the gambling space. So before we even get into the odds around the Grammys. I'm curious how they set odds around something that is voted on like a Grammy. I feel duped. We're gonna talk raiders we should get into later fans here. But no depressive, no, come on, man. I'm depressed. So it's a great question because there is no like huge exact science to it is like maybe making a football point spread. Basically what happens is like one book sort of sets out the odds based on their knowledge. And usually the person who does it is pretty knowledgeable about the space whether it be propagates on the. Oscar's grams usually have like a quote unquote expert who understands the stuff and uses last year. So the odds go out, and then they're very soft, very elastic. Meaning they'll take bets very in. As they come in. They'll kind of understand where the market should be set because that's really what horse racing. Odds are two horse racing is what's called para mutual. Whereas they put odds out there. And then as the bets come in everything has a domino effect. So that's why it's legal in all these states not has to be legalized like Nevada at it. It's not against the houses, para mutual. So these odds like all odds making is about risk management. A lot of these guys who run sports books that's their job title is risk management like director or manager risk. So you just odds come in..

"Even if you don't care the Grammys are no different than that. The Grammys need the biggest stars in the world to perform and they need the big stars in the world to have hugely relevant radio hits to make or I shouldn't say radio hugely relevant hits in general, whatever medium justed on in order to make people giving him. That's the problem though, is that nowadays because of access and the fact that he's artists have so much of it. They don't. The Grammy's anymore. You know, they don't get some of the biggest names on the planet anymore to perform because they don't need them. It's just like the Super Bowl, you know, used to do that for access used to do that. So you get access to one hundred fifty million televisions. But you have that now with you too. You know, you have that now Instagram and with Twitter and Facebook. And so I think that's that's just a problem that we're going to continue to see happen. Just big name artists saying. I don't I don't need it. I don't need the Grammy's like I used to. It's not a part of what I do. And like, I don't have to go. What would you say is the biggest person on the planet right now in terms of like music? Great question who is the the one act that everybody would tune into beyond say, let's just be real. You can be beyond the Tom Brady of what you like there might be beyond safe Attiya, but they still tune in beyond you put you you announce that she's come. I mean, didn't the Grammy's do stupid numbers when she was pregnant performed think beyond say are still think Bruno Mars is in some category around that like just whether you're soccer mom, or whether you're, you know, a kid Bruno Mars has some level, but beyond say his generations like beyond say we because like because Bruno Mars is going to jam and you're gonna have a blast. I mean, we saw him on the Grammy's lash Superfund, and he reenacted the video whatever. But beyond he's going to do some like get the bleep button, ready kyri like some stupid. You know, what I mean like she's going to do something? That's like what did I just went? When she did that performance pregnant. I was like, what am I witnessed thing? I didn't even know if it was good or not it didn't matter. I was like what's happening right now. The fertility goddess we started people started like googling what African fertility goddess where because of her like she literally makes an impact that that the world sees when she performs. It's insane. Just want to run through the ringer here. She's gonna do stupid that's going to be memorable. And it's going to be sort of visual ship. And it's also going to be sung like crazy. I mean when you look at all of that together, it's going to give you a lotta shit. Stop talking about you're going to be like..

"And I feel like now I'm at the point where I can finally start to apply that to like the what I'm known best for bring it full circle. Right. I love that. And was it that moment when you saw the, you know the rise of EDM or whatever you wanna call it, was that when you started making connections with those other artists base artists and people in different genres base? Yeah, definitely. Some part of me felt the need to reach out to these people and try to learn from them. And yeah. How did that at the start? How did that go for you? Because that at this point you had already put. Out your first album and which was nominated for a Grammy. Am I right about that? Yeah, let's see. I read that and I was like, man, I did not remember that. I have some friends to thank for that. You know, it's, it's all nepotism on the Grammy panel. I've heard that. Yeah, good to hear it from somebody who knows what was just very quickly. What was that experience lake? I mean, did you even care? Was it like a big deal for you at the time? I cared in a good sense though. I felt it like it was kind of damaging to my psyche. Really? Yeah. I didn't pressure too much pressure. Didn't put me in a good place at all. I didn't know what I was was doing it in nowhere to go after that. You know, maybe there was some now expectations, you know? No, it's like what Grammy nominated than people expect something Grammy nominated means you expect to try to get a Grammy in the future which I wasn't going for Grammy nomination. Right? Right, you know. So that app from that point on, I was like, well, if I don't try and get a Grammy now, it's like, I've got this thing I've never accomplished, whereas didn't really even think I was had a chance of complicating that in the first place, right? It changed my goals and my whole mindset, and it's taken a long time to get out of that. Interesting. How do you see yourself? I mean, I guess that's a good way to talk about more current day, like, how do you see yourself fitting into what's going on now? Because you know, we've talked about you were outspoken at certain points about, you know, some practices you didn't like, or you know, calling people out all of that. And you said sometimes you would take a step back, but it seems like at this point I mean, you've got the label, you're talking about all these new releases that sound exciting and fun, and it seems like you're reinvigorated at least certain extent. How do you see yourself kind of where. Fit in in two thousand eighteen doesn't even care anymore. Yeah, I, I mean, when I think about that, I find it hard to really place myself because I don't know. It's hard to stay relevant, twenty two eighteen obviously. But I think the only way really is to not try if you if you think too much about it than than you're immediately going to start pandering to certain people and stop thinking about, you know. I think people forget what their actual taste is. Sometimes that's a great point. You know, it's it's all about sticking to your taste, but sometimes you can really lose track of what your tastes actually are because you think too many things get mixed up into what you like. And yeah, it's what you just said about the the Grammy nomination. It makes me think of that as well. I think we both probably know artists who have kind of gotten trapped in advertently in something that maybe they're not so passionate about, or they wished they were able to do something else just because they were maybe chasing whatever that trophy is whatever that brass ring that they're trying to get. And when you get that tunnel vision, you're completely right that you can sort of lose track of why you actually started doing exactly and..

"So but i mean in other words he's the kind of guy who could be the the locus for these kind of cross john or across generational things and he wasn't on the stage was just dealing with the ons in the audience in that i think was a missed opportunity and i think something that you spoke about earlier with franco shan and i mean a lot of increasingly more artist not showing up to the grammys ed sheeran didn't even bother to come any sweep he slept the pop categories and drake hello while we think he he didn't show up by the way i'm positive because he wasn't even get a album of the year nominate yet so his his was like a fit of pique that people are presenting us some kind of woke move i would just say i mean it's the same reason that frank ocean hasn't show that drake doesn't shot that justin bieber to shop anymore i mean i'm glad that he didn't perform d'esposito but i mean he was a big part of that signs um success and when the remixed drop that was what she added up to number one and so i think that what's fascinating about this moment with the grammy is is that there is a certain sector artists that do continue to take the award very seriously and it is very much the artist who are going to be more easily celebrated in those major categories but there are the artist that we would call classics right now that i would say are on the same level as a contract or a brunell or any lease artist that we are recognising who are just not showing up and what's going to happen in the next ten years if i feel like i law people were seeing that beyond saint jisi may never show up again because of these really incredible snubs over the last few years i mean beyond state to album of the year nominations in a row getting subbed for albums that both those artists that one instead of her recognized as a leisure loss and a really strange situation so it's i think is gonna be really fascinating in the next few years it's tough though amina utter noise exhume will i saw someone suggesting that women should boycott the grammys you know i don't know of disengaging from my perspective i don't know if that's the answer i think.

"It is mindbending that here we are in 2018 and the institutional resistance to help off which is the dominant actual genre in terms of numbers and the dominant cultural and like cycle jonrowe for decades now remains so far removed from this thing and the other thing that we're seeing in addition to ogle the nominees seemed better this year so we hoped that the outcome would be better the grammys are no longer the only game in town and that's what they say there are some secondary a worship the people want to win as badly as grammys but if you're mad about the grammys use go on twitter and be like i mad about the grammys i'm not going and get as much attention as if you win an actual grammy maybe more i think kanye west as more for his career by not going to the grammy by eating in berlin a young although apparently hours from the day before but still phenomenal great but i don't think it's that they've never seen billboard it's a choice i mean they they know who might easy is you know they they you know voice imbed did in structural racism okay first you said it i did what what levelled a once a any in the more generous explanation for making that choice extreme conservatism about what to put on television that that you're looking at billboard magazine and you're seeing khalid and you're seeing lord and you're thinking like i'm not so sure about this new thing that's happening in music which has been going on for twenty year actor asio like lemme lemme check my rolodex i you know bonn owes their stings their elton john is there there's a there's are there's a i'll it's almost like a comfort for those boiling layers my guy bano polling someone aside in bela hey man you know like maybe i don't need to be on the show threetimes like want you use 5 of those mira and that's us he's the look a lot on it.

"Welcome to the milo show welcome to episode 1 this is it first show today we can talk about the grammys of course we all i'm going to talk to vox dei who is an author and a publisher and a blogger who is a very popular among the new right some members of the old front and various other internet enabled factions of libertarianism in free speech fundamentalism and all the rest of it online so we'll talk to him later in the shirt first of all however we're starting with the grammys of course we nobody could us in this one coming hillary clinton loans her incredible charisma like ability and personality to the grammy awards bring the same kind of wit and chogm that allowed her to fill up phone booths with her political rallies the same kind of intellect that allowed her to sell dozens of books and of course it bombs this is so predictable these people have no selfawareness whatsoever i'm trying to mention i'm trying to picture our universe in which a failed republican candidate for president will be put on stage at an awards show the grammys of course being you know buying by a clear margin without any real competition the most misogynistic awards show of all drenched in sexualization and demeaning attitudes towards women and they have the the what's partner to show up with these white roses what some of them anyway some of the rebels were smart enough not to do it because they knew that get called out on that i i think there was a sort of a feeling of tara a little free so of anxiety in the air last night we could tell that is wasn't like come it wasn't like you know golden globes it's not it's one of those things where everyone's just lovely and charming and fabulous and so happy to be hero patting each other on the back no the the the grammys there was a little a little element of danger in the air and you could tell that from the source of varying degrees of commitment to the.

"That has been a key for me to whatever sas that i've achieved an and i've n i hear that in your music so i appreciate you sharing that i'd i'll get to i'll get to some sports in a minute but i i'm serious about how you feel about being nominated for a grammy you all over to me so you know i'm coming from uh making music in a basement and just kind of just doing it for a few friends at school to get nominated for grammy using billboard and you know number one albums and stuff like that in and all of that to me uh is is kind of like i don't know how look i look at it like more than anything is kind of like leverage or like a platform it's not it's not an identify so dozen identify me doesn't like at anything more value to me and that's where you have to fight to remember the adding more value to me it's just it's kinda like another hammer in your tool shit that you can use if you if you if you thoughtful elm you know maybe it means you can you know uh collaborate with somebody that otherwise may not have considered it or or you can you know i dunno or quit go and schools and people pay attention and you could talk about music and how to use a crack will but i i look at that as a as a tool it also i'm honored uh that people will consider me in that light and that people would say man while that's amazing uh what you're doing and you know they would dominate you for grammy or or any of those types of things but i i i do try to look at them is as tools in a tool shit and not like qualifiers identifies 'cause there's so many great artist who don't have grammy awards you know it's like this people who are phenomenal who never be regarded you know um as as great as they are bodies awards in categorised sell be listen year successful in and we already know now and you're learning the game in a way in which a lot of people don't know the game so he's a we giving out advice 'cause i do want to get your sports takes your hot sports thanks cell even following with opening rate.
