Brooklyn Nets Closing in on Los Angeles Lakers in Updated 2021 NBA Championship Odds
"So let's get started says we're at all star weekend in the nba Not that anybody gives a crap when it comes to the all star weekend but it is a time to go ahead and look back at what we've seen so far in the nba. And how the title odds may have shifted because fez all of a sudden. We've got a brand new co-favourite expected or at least projected to win the nba championship yet. Brooklyn nets plus two eighty the same odds now as the lakers. The nets just about a week ago where four to one. Rj bell recommended a bet on the nets. At that time. I got to give credit. Heck i gotta give her own. Mackenzie rivers credit. He bet the nets at two to one to win the east. And i think i was buying the narrative of oh kyrie irving harden these guys. I just don't trust these guys to integrate to play well together and really the opposite has been true. The nets despite bring harden in missing lots of games. Obviously when he wasn't on the team and having durant missing so many games they're right there with the best record in the east. And i think they only get better and if i make one bet and the futures market i would bet the nets right now. Plus the two eighty jonas. You said you like the nets into win the east even more at plus twenty five right. That's that's the one that that. I would look at because when you get to the nba finals. I mean you know this. I mean i it just depends the matchups. We've seen a couple of weird situations happen in the nba finals. The past couple of years. You saw a bunch of injuries early on for the heat last year in the finals you saw the golden state warriors the year before that with the toronto raptors injuries took place in those final. So we've seen this happen before where it's such a long race when you get to the finish line. It's all about a war of attrition. who's going to be the healthiest when you get to that point. But as far as coming out of the eastern conference. I know that the philadelphia seventy sixers are a great story. But i'm with you fez. These brooklyn nets have played and exceeded expectations thus far just based on personalities. Now they do have kyrie irving. That's the problem because kyrie irving is like the guy who decides to read a book in the middle of party like people are doing cake stands and they're having a good time. There's a bathtub filled with booze. You've got stripper poles. You've got everything. And he decides. That's the time he's going to break out. Warren peace and sit in the middle of the party because he just wants the attention and wants to show that he's different and he's i mean if the earth is not flat then we shouldn't go to the bubble then they should change the nba logo. That's the only reservation. I have about the brooklyn nets. i'm not worried about james harden at all james harden shown he's willing to sacrifice and do something different and decrease his workload from an offense standpoint in order to try and make the team better. I'm not worried about kevin durant. He's already been paired up with stars before it had a couple of stars at he's played with kyri to me is the one piece of that that i would. I would be a little bit concerned with. And but here's the other part of the nets. And why. I like this and especially like to win the eastern conference. What's the one knock on james harden throughout the course of his career. Great regular season runs out of gas in the postseason. Well now he's not having to carry the entire offense himself. So if that's the case and you're going to get a better rested better in condition. James harden when the postseason comes around fez to me that just screams brooklyn coming out of the eastern conference

"A nonpartisan think tank finds there was no mass exodus from California last year. Despite reports to the contrary, however, California policy lab says the pandemic did change some historical patterns as fewer people moved into the golden state to replace those who left. Lillard's late 3 gives Blazers 108-106 win over Warriors
"Damian Lillard hit what proved to be the game winning three point shot with thirteen point seven seconds remaining as the Portland trail Blazers beat the Golden State Warriors one away to one oh six Lillard scored his team's last eight points in the final two minutes as the trail Blazers rallied for the victory now is the time where like I got a four seed to lose I got it I got to create opportunity even if it's a tough one or even whatever happens I gotta put my foot on the gas a little bit more and try to make something happen Lillard and Carmelo Anthony scored twenty two points for Portland while Robert Covington and Gary Trent junior each chipped in fifteen points apiece Stephan curry topped the worst with thirty five points or Draymond green had twelve assists and nine rebounds I'm Jim Bernard
James scores 19 in 1,300th regular-season game in Lakers win
"Lebron James in the Lakers blasted the warriors one seventeen to ninety one LA scored a season high seventy three first half points to go ahead by twenty nine that lead got up to thirty five in the second half that meant a relatively easy night for James who scored nineteen points in limited action you take advantage when you can you know you prepare as if you got to play forty eight and you know you you let the game dictate no the guy himself tonight was that was not needed was half forty eight for myself and and I'll take it Eric paschal scored eighteen points to top Golden State mark Myers Los Angeles
Warriors use late run to pull away from Pacers, 111-107
"Stephan curry scored twenty four points and Draymond green fell just short of a triple double as the warriors dump the Pacers one eleven one oh seven green had twelve points eleven rebounds nine assists and three steals for Golden State early on this season we couldn't we wouldn't want to get you know we discussed in order to be a playoff team in order to consume HM Nestle you know you're gonna have nights like that where ball this morning you don't want to back to back tired the warriors led ninety nine ninety eight with four thirty six left before scoring the next six points to regain control Malcolm Brogdon led the Pacers with twenty four points of the Montesa bonus had twenty two with sixteen rebounds for his twenty fourth double double of the season I'm Dave Ferrie

Chris Broussard: LeBron is right, KD, Warriors Big 3 were better than Nets
"Asked about playing in next week's free for the first time on thursday. Lebron james pump the brakes on calling it. An unprecedented collection of talent reminding reporters quote. We forgot about katie. Stephan play. already. I mean there you go there you go right there of course lost back to back finals to the warriors big three that he referenced right then i first sard is back joining us. I don't think so chris. Do you agree with the brown hair. Well i i'm guessing that skip sensors and alterior motive. Oh i won't go there. I'll be interested in seeing what he says. But i'm going with the golden state guys staff clay and and i've got five reasons why number one the pieces fit together better when those three katie went to golden state. We had no questions about whether or not it was going to work because none of the guys are ball dominant. None of them needed the ball in their hands. A lot to be effective and give you twenty plus points. Obviously james harden and car. We have been bald dominant dribble it a lot which can make it more difficult to fit together now. They're fitting together great offensively but theoretically there games are a lot more ball dominant. Golden state guys to golden state was better defensively. And i'm not just talking about draymond green. Who's not even part of this conversation. You add katie. Who was younger and i. I'm sure it was a better defender at that point. Then he can be at this point a little older often an achilles injury and then klay thompson was a legitimately very good defender. He made an all nba. Defensive team steph obviously is in the category of harden and kyrie. None of them are really great defenders. The third thing better shooters as well as hard and kyrie shoe. And they are great shooters steph. Curry is the best shooter in nba history. So good that he changed the game. He literally changed the way the nba is played because he's such a great shooter and clay is arguably arguably the second greatest shooter of all time again that enables you to fit better together and certainly for today's game the better shooters i mean. That's a huge thing. You have fourth no drama. They they they were low maintenance guys in golden state k. d. had a little drama but for the most part that's a low maintenance group in brooklyn i i love his game but i gotta worry about kyrie. He was playing great at the beginning of the season. And then all of a sudden just went awol. Is that going to happen again. Is going to be happy. The entire season playing shooting guard. Or will he get the rich to have the ball in his hands more again even last night. Why was car sitting out. They said back tightness. But i bet you replace the next five games and is fine and plays great like they need to be on the floor as much as possible. I can't be legitimately injured hamstring but kyrie hard and they don't need to be just sitting out to rest are so the drama a is there. And here's the final thing steph and clay before k. got there. They proved that they could lead a team to a championship. They proved they didn't need this transcendent lebron or k. d. or somebody like that to lead them to a championship. They didn't need a stack team. They did it on their own k. D. was certainly the best player on those golden state teams but he went to a champion. Already he is still yet to prove. He can lead his own team to a championship. Even though it was the best player kyri hit one of the greatest shots in nba. History may be the greatest. But obviously that was lebron's team. Kyrie has have much playoff success without lebron james yet and we know harden has yet to prove that he can lead a team to a championship. So for all those reasons. I'm going with golden state
Durant leads Brooklyn past Warriors in Golden State reunion
"Kevin Durant returned to play on the warriors home court for the first time since he left them as a free agent and let his Brooklyn that's store one thirty four one seventeen round of his old team Durant scored twenty points with six assists and five rebounds against the team he led to the NBA finals all three years he played with Golden State with two championships played a great game well we focus on from this morning waking up for sure and always go five all day hi we are being let's six that's in double figures with twenty three points with James harden having nineteen points and sixteen assess stuff curry led the warriors with twenty seven points but made just two of nine three point shots I'm John Merriam

Irving Scores 39, Brooklyn Nets Cool Off Los Angeles Clippers With 124-120 Win
"Nets made the trade to get James Harden. The obvious question was whether the three stars could co exist seems to be working hard and not taking nearly the number of shots he took while Houston, but he's doing what's needed Last night. Triple double. Kevin Durant scored 28 points only missed two shots and Kyrie Irving Porting 39 the next week. The Clippers at Barclays 1 24 to 1 20. The Nets have won five in a row with Hardin on the floor. Celtics wanted Golden State a win for Utah. That's 12 of 13 for the
Kemba Walker Up and Down as Boston Celtics beat Warriors
"Get into Kemble a little bit cuz this started out to me is like the Kemba Walker starting to find his rhythm game and he was hitting shots early and then he just went ice cold again and it's just like, so again, you're kind of stuck in that in-between range with Kemba where wage In the early going again. He looked quick again, you know, and he looked you know, he had some juice but that shots got a fall and it was early and I even tweeted and we were talking about it's like, okay, this is good. This is what you want to see and then like you said just get ice cold and if if he's shooting such a low percentage, it's just it's not helping so I'm glad he was able to kind of overcome it. But again these box scores these lines these six of a teens, you know, and again, he acquitted himself fine on defense Drew one charge possibly another he was fine, but he's just got to just more of these shots have to drop especially the ones that are open and he still this wasn't an overly big team. He did still struggle every time he tried to get to the basket on him either throwing up something that was please don't block this, you know levels of creative that he just it wasn't a high percentage look at the rim or just you know, or got blocked wage. Couldn't get there. So he's still struggling, you know in tight and this this isn't a particularly large Golden State team and they also lost somebody during the game. So that's still a bit of a concern for me with Kemba Walker. You want to see one of those nights where he's just it flows the whole game long. We still haven't really I mean like I say, we still haven't seen it but we haven't seen Pete Campbell anywhere close yet. Nothing
Marcus Smart injury update: Boston Celtics guard expected to miss 2-3 weeks with Grade 1 calf strain

James, Lakers open long trip by beating Bucks 113-106
"The Lakers were lighting it up from the three point arc nailed nineteen in a one thirteen waddle six win over the bucs lebron James carried the weight six three pointers on his way to a team high thirty five points the Lakers have blown a double digit lead in their last game against Golden State and that's the not sit well with the team contiguous Caldwell pope had twenty three well the box had issues Jana son of the couple had twenty five points a team high but nine turnovers as the box trail for the entire second half it was the start of a seven game road trip for the Lakers Chuck Freeman Milwaukee

"Fdic. a. Kevin one of the silver linings of all of this past year for the warriors was the fact that they got the second pick in the draft and they select james wiseman out of memphis and there were all sorts of questions about him because his only college. She's got cut short after three games and then because cova there was no summer league there. Was this very abbreviated training camp. So how unique has his entrance into the nba. Ben and how was he fit in while matriculating with these warriors through seven games. Now i think steve kerr said it. The other day we had conversation which is this is completely unprecedented. There is no way there's ever been a player coming into the league with this little. Prep time going into opening night. Right most rookies there. Is this orientation process right. You go to summer league. You get the kind of feel in the rhythm of the nba game. Those are important games. You get a full training camp by the way you get the camaraderie that comes with training camp. You get to go on a fishing boat with paul george. Whatever the hell they do in golden state right like you you do all that and instead. He's coming into this very atomised league. He has three games of college experience. But he's also kind of special. You know i asked. Bob myers the general manager. You know why you selected wise one of the reasons. I asked that is centers kind of out of fashion in the league. There are a lot of organizations. You can't imagine drafting a center. Because i think it's become a bit of a mercenary position. You can always go out and get one on the cheap you know why. Get a guy that so often given the modern game is gonna be on the floor. Drain crucial minutes. And i thought golden state frankly was one of those organizations and he said just. This is somebody. There's nothing you can say he won't be able to do. Can you do everything right now. No but when you start ticking off things you want from a center in the modern mba. Can he shoot. Can you protect the rim can switch out and guard. Small guys when pick and rolls. Can you run. the floor can pass. He has the capacity to all those things and would impress myers was at their only dinner. last october. and november wiseman showed up alone. And i asked myers is that unusually says absolutely generally speaking when a nineteen year old comes to meet the coach and the owner and the general manager. You know they'll be some sort of handler. Maybe a member of the family or coach or something and weisman just kinda walks in like. He's meeting the three middle aged guys dinner. Because he's one of them and just composes himself. Weisman's fascinating he speaks mandarin. Because how does that happen. I think weisman sees. It is look at me if you're going to be an nba player your citizen of the world. A lot of guys talk meditation. It's kind of fashionable to say..

"Have these five finals appearances. They won three. they were a dynasty. They are no longer a dynasty by virtue of last year's lost gap year. People call it but now they're they've got some good players but they are team like any other team in the league. Right it used to be the warriors and everybody else now. They're searching identities. They're trying to turn marginal players into good ones. They're trying to get prospects up to speed. They're trying to stave off the aging of some of their players. There without klay thompson so all of this isn't a state of suspension. There's just these questions that golden state's asking for the first time which is. How good can we be in this. Incarnation incarnation it does feel kevin there at this unique inflection point the state of suspension. As you say. I want to recap for our listeners. Here just the string of utter horrible luck. That landed them here. What happened to this team to bring them so low. After leading this very charmed existence in the two thousand eighteen finals against toronto. We saw kevin durant go down with an achilles injury and we saw klay thompson. Go down with an acl injury and that pretty much torpedo their chances in that fines in the off season kevin durant departs golden state for brooklyn then the following year or absent. Much klay thompson steph. Curry breaks his hand. And that pretty much packs it in and then just before the season this november klay thompson. A workout in southern california had his own achilles injury and he is out for the year. he's rehabbing and green after. Having to deal with health protocols getting back into shape strained his foot so he was absent the first four games of the season so it was very much stephan the spare parts to start the season. Which kind of i think might had had their stock price a little artificially low however there's still people who believe. This is a fringe playoff team. I think the most interesting thing is. We don't know it's been years since we haven't been able to declare the golden state warriors top contenders. But we don't know the margin between very good good and hey it's a second gap year it does feel out of all of that and there's a lot there that klay thompson that's the most gut wrenching aspect of all of this. I mean he had worked. All the way back was on the cost of being steps running partner again. Nba fans let alone. Warriors fans. I think nba fans who appreciate the aesthetic nature of basketball. Let alone the substance of what they were doing. We wanted that and yet this happens and what kind of a bomb was kevin for what the warriors have been planning to do. It was devastating. You look at the top five or six players and you say this is a team that you rightfully have to put among the contenders and without thompson. It just loses it's shape. He provides so much structured. The offense he's a great defender. And so much of the interplay as you say between two curry and thompson. It's the engine that makes them work. Those are the two wheels just flying around the court confusing defenses and allowing golden state to perform the surgery. They do against defenses as even speaking to people who work for this team kevin. What's your sense of their mindset. At this point how easy how hard maybe has been to shake off this kind of a setback yet. Another setback and move on. I think they have a very measured expectations about this year. This is an intermission. They're on a fact-finding mission. They don't expect. I don't think to win a championship this year. But what they do expect is to get each of those other pieces acquainted with playing with steph. Curry is playing with steph. Curry.

"Steph curry is considered to be struggling. He is the greatest shooter. man has ever seen. It is not an exaggeration. And when clay gives back look the hell out. Golden state is gonna be immediately back in championship contention by the way. I like that kid. Wise while stevenage shouts out the doubters steph curry and the once terrifying golden state warriors do have a lot to prove this season. It has been eighteen months of just bad luck with serious injuries. Plaguing the rest. Today kevin arnovitz reports the warriors. Now find themselves at a crucial inflection point. And how he fallen dynasty is trying to shoot. Its way back to talk. I'm pablo torre. It's wednesday january. Cifs this is. Espn kevin arnovitz. Hello hello pablo. I am so excited to talk to you today. Because you have been digging into the golden state warriors and you've talked to their players. Their coaches their executives. But i want to know what other people are curious about. They hear that you're writing a future on the warriors. What did they want to know can still work can steph curry dragged his team by the scruff of its neck into the playoff field. Can they approximate without klay thompson. Kevin durant gone even a glimmer of what they were during their dynasty. And that's what people wanna know. And at the center of all of this kevin this week in particular is steph curry and we can't begin this conversation without talking about what he did specifically on sunday night. How would you describe what you saw. It was a volcano curry leads. In one hand or just off balance grows it up. It's good he's got fifty. Career screen takes a deep free. It's god fifty nine points. Curry takes another three. It's up job. He's got sixty two just unspeakable three point attempts that no person with a good conscience ever a nation of basketball coaches is freaking out. Because they're going to have fourteen year olds in practice pulling up from thirty seven feet. There was the sense coming out of their very met to into road trip. That steps showing few signs he might. It's gonna happen. It may happen. Don't you think it's going to happen. He's starting to move differently. We're starting to find him. The ball and places he likes it and as draymond green said to somebody on the staff. All it takes is one in. We saw that one sunday night against portland and essentially recreated the steph. We knew for those five years over the dynasty. Let's be clear about what the prelude to that career high sixty two was because he was shooting. What like twenty percent from three in those first two games so when people are begging hoping for that volcano to start shaking again. Why do you think it actually ended up exploding as it did. I mean one is just the laws of inevitability second is in your staff. They all emphasize this. And it sounds a little bit like spin. If you're if you're sort of cynical which is look. He's playing with guys that he's never played with before. But when you really start digging into it and you remember what it was like to watch the weird they don't run scripted sets all that much mall. Those great beautiful plays that you see that. Look like basketball ballet. They use intuition. They use a million reps playing together to sort of know where everybody's going to be almost telepathically on the floor. And so you've seen that a million times steph. Runs comes off a pick and roll. He gives the ball up. He relocates to the corner other people kind of follow him there. Somebody comes off the other side and then steph kind of relocates again and you find him and it's so second nature if you watched it for five straight years you come to take it for granted but if the other guys on. The floor aren't versed in the dark arts of golden state warriors movement. It's harder and it was something that i think other teammates. The new guys andrew wiggins kelly oubre rookie. James wideman guys. Who haven't played as long with him. It takes a little while to get in the rhythm. There was like a moment. I think in the milwaukee their second loss of the season where you saw step come off one of those speaking roles and he was going to kind of go fast too slow to the right corner and there was somebody there right and it wasn't the fault of a teammate. It's just they're not equipped with the intuition and just the nuances of golden state warriors basketball. Which essentially is how do we find steph. The right shot at the right moment at the right time precisely where he wants it. It's funny to think of people already beginning to sell their stock. Instead of because of these early games that you reference kevin because in the midst of it in the midst of that slump. We got this video of steph hitting one hundred and five i believe consecutive three pointers in practice. What did you make of that piece of mba mythology that was actually real at third that performance at practice in chicago. That's right before their third game is coming off of two games where he's four twenty. Now when you hear a guy like steph curry's for twenty. The answer is a slum but how does a person in a slump hit one hundred and five three pointers in a row. So it was this sort of clash of realities which was the performance on. The floor wasn't very good. Is his former offer his mechanics off his head and the answers will will quite certainly not because he just hit one hundred five free pointers in a row like them because there are people that i saw again on the internet but nonetheless people who were not impressed by this who are these people pablo who people who say kevin practice is one thing the game capital t capital g. is another and steph just doesn't have it in game anymore. I have no comment. I told heresy. I feel like steph. Indulged it more than you just did in reference to all the people who had doubted him. You went michael jordan. Meam on everybody department is still personal q. The jordan may take all that person just a An opportunity to kind of sirte. My will the game early and try to create some energy. This sixty two point game steph pushing back on his critics like that it all comes right as a lot of people are revising their understanding of who the warriors maybe really are. So how crucial is this particular moment. It couldn't come at.

"Right guys welcome back like I said before the break I want to discuss the Brooklyn. Nets next year. Okay. Next year my expectations for Brooklyn what should they be able to accomplish after adding guys like Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to a roster that has already made the postseason Bo both of the PLA last two prior seasons without them. So what does that mean for the Brooklyn Nets after adding to all NBA caliber players adding those two guys to a roster that has already made the postseason both of the two the last consecutive seasons. What does that mean for Brooklyn next year I think I think it means a whole lot overall. Start with Kevin Durant Earth Kevin Durant. He left arguably arguably the perfect situation in Golden State. So in Golden, state. A quick recap for you. He won two championships in three seasons. Okay. When two championships in three seasons, two finals MVP's, and then with the loss to the Toronto Raptors I I know the biggest thing with him throughout his whole tenure there was the whole. You know the doubters the haters. I. Should say saying, no, they don't need you. They won without you Snake you into a loaded team all raise it. That was the biggest thing to to Kevin I think and they had the biggest effect on him leaving in my opinion and from articles I've read books I've read on the situation. So I think that was the biggest. Factor in Kevin Leaving Golden State, the whole narrative that they did not need him to win a how however with the loss to Toronto in the twenty nine, thousand, nine, hundred finals, i. think that whole narrative basically disappeared or was basically erased. They proved that they could not win a championship they were injured. Guess Klay was injured wasn't fully. Healthy you know they were playing Quinn Cook in a phone zone mckennie thirty minutes and an NBA finals game i. know I know but still. I think that that did somebody raise the narrative that they didn't need him to win a championship. So I think if he did stay if he did resign than that the narrative of him, you know going there to a loaded team would somewhat decrease as time went on and we would not always think that I think we would. Overall. I think we would eventually. I just think we would eventually all come to agree that the Golden State Warriors Needed Kevin Durant as much as Kevin durant needed. The Golden State Warriors, I think that ultimately would have been the outcome or conclusion we came to if they if he would've stayed. Long term and and they win again this year or something or they. You know when next year with him either way you know he leaves in my opinion because of that whole narrative as to where they didn't need him a Kevin durant leaves arguably the perfect situation in Golden State and then ask for his co star in Kyrie Irving. Kyri leaves a deep in loaded roster arguably arguably the perfect situation for him was in Boston as well. So both guys arguably leave the perfect situation. Kyrie after demanding trade from book from Brooklyn to. Going to Boston, that was one of the teams he wanted to go to the. So after demanding the trade now being the face in the leader in in Boston a of the team of the Celtics. Had guys had a supporting cast of Jason Tatum, Jalen Brown Marcus Smart Gordon Hayward coach, Brad Stevens. So you get all of that going for him but both of them they they decide to leave those things behind Kerry chooses to leave behind tatum Brown Hayward smart the face of the franchise I think he arguably still has now he's the Co face. The legendary near the the veteran coach I should say in comparison to what they have now in Seve Natia first year coach. K. Relieves all that Kevin durant leaves you know Steph Curry Klay Thompson Steve Kerr, the structuring Golden State, the ball movement, the game plan. So both of those guys like I said leave arguably the perfect situation to play with each other in Brooklyn. Oath. Really came down to Kyrie. Wind Plane Brooklyn Kevin Durant wanting to play with Kyri. So we said yeah, let's go to Brooklyn a snob I don't WanNa be the savior of the Knicks. Maybe that's too much pressure or they don't care or they don't care at all about the Knicks whatever they choose Brooklyn, they choose each other over Golden State over Boston? Both players I think had doubts on their ability or have had on their ability to lead a team to a title Kevin Durant before Golden State. Even honestly now it's like Kenney still be the best player. On not completely stag team to win a title. Kyri as well. He played with the brunt obviously. Lebron. Was the Batman to Kyrie's Robin but Ken, Kyrie be a Batman that has been the biggest question on Kevin Durant. Kyrie Irving Ken they both elite a team now they're both on a team together leaning it together. So we will see perhaps that is why they chose Brooklyn as a true legacy standpoint we will win together the narrative on us is that we can't do it on the biggest stage we can't lead a team so to together, we do it by ourselves. Perhaps that's why they did that perhaps it's just because of their great relationship together. But either way there have been doubts on their ability on their abilities to lead teams to titles but with talent surrounding this group no this Kevin. Durant Kyrie but it doesn't stop after that would the Laker roster we know it's Anthony Davis Lebron and then a bunch of guys quite frankly. Gaining Green Dwight Howard at times stepped up in a Rhonda was huge in the postseason Kuzma. It was really gaining was ultimately Lebron AD and some guys who would step up. Mention Him. As you know who would step up on any given night, it was a rotating third guy. But as for Brooklyn. There isn't a huge drop off at that third player fourth player goes. Kevin Durant Kyrie. Irving. Spencer Dinwiddie Levert, De'andre Jordan Joe Harris. So right there those are. That's a solid seven player lineup right there Kevin Durant Kyrie Joe Harris Spencer Dinwiddie Care Sliver deandre. Jordan. That has a very solid seven player lineup. Yes. You gotta fill in pieces GIG GOTTA get a backup point guard and some other defenders of their shooters in there. Obviously. But still overall on paper just looking at those seven players and you're looking at their past track record making the playoffs both of the last two seasons without a Kevin Durant or Kyrie irving just by the will of this team, the game plan on this team and the spirit. Of these players so you're simply adding Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to a playoff team already a very capable supporting cast. So in my opinion, the expectation for the Brooklyn Nets is NBA finals or bust you know the East is as open as ever it is very competitive, very competitive, but it is open for the taking waiting to be ruled over. Yes. Miami could win Milwaukee Boston. TORONTO. But I don't think either one of them. Any one of those teams are overwhelming favorites with the talent that Brooklyn has they have. The ability to be overwhelming favourite in the eastern conference. So I don't think it's necessarily title or bust but you gotTa Win The Eastern Conference with everything that's going on you got to win the eastern conference it got to make it to the NBA finals again, you don't necessarily have to win the title it is this group's first year would the stars it is you know Kevin's first year coming back after the injury but I definitely think they are capable and should be the one of one of the favorites to win it and should be the favorites to win the eastern. conference. But would the Lakers the clippers Miami Milwaukee Golden State all those teams not going anywhere it's understandable. That I, it would definitely be understandable if they don't win the finals next year. So definitely, high expectations afforded due in Brooklyn in January that I've been saying January will be the the soonest NBA. Basketball. If we're getting that that healthy duo of Katie inquiry that supporting cast in Brooklyn. Expectations are high like I said I. Think it's NBA Finals or bus you you win the Eastern Conference all that thing all everything taken into consideration January cannot come soon. Enough..

"We're GONNA have to wait until at least January to see. But as of right now, it's looking like next season. is going to be just as if not more competitive as this we know this year the going into it everyone was so excited because it was the big. What if big question mark season anyone can win the clippers, the Lakers, the bucks, the Celtics. the rockets the six serve the jazz deliver rise anyone could win be heard going into this year. So I think next year what wh what we've seen so far the moves golden state will make teams like Denver Dallas getting better. Miami Getting Better Brooklyn getting a whole lot better. Yes. As of right now next season is looking like it's going to. Be. Just as if not way more competitive I cannot wait to see again, we have multiple months. Multiple Months to wait until seeing the NBA basketball back. Again, we were spoiled for a little bit for a while I should say having the longest NBA season in history but again won't be too much longer until we have it back on the court. And I have nothing but nothing but faith in Golden State. Golden. State's front office to make the right moves to have them back in contention next year. Okay. I. Want to go ahead and take a quick break when I come back I wanNA discussing Los Angeles Lakers what possible roster changes or moves they should make to make sure they can be right back in contention next year.

"But as you guys know both looney and Chris are under sized big men, neither of them are over six foot nine I would say so both of them being undersized not really a threat I should say to a guy like Anthony Davis Karl Anthony. Towns Joel Embiid Not a whole lot of. Post presence for the warriors, but they do have a couple of. Floor spreading biggs eight. Gigs in Chris and looney there that's kind of what they're looking for. Now I believe maybe a little bit bigger or maybe a guy who can spread the floor a little bit better with a better outside shot but I think Golden State. needs to take another route. They do not need to necessarily build through the draft do a whole nineteen, ninety nine spurs thing where they draft draft Tim Duncan the then the next year they go and win the title I don't necessarily see that for this golden state group at least from from this, a rookie Dr-? Drew Rookie draft class that we have this year at least you know from from that standpoint I I don't see it if we did have a Tim Duncan in this year's draft. Heck. Why couldn't the warriors be other the repeat history and be the recent Spurs but no I think golden state needs to take a different path I'm not you know soul I'm not in love with Anthony Edwards necessarily anyone from the strath class I think the biggest upside as of now is Lamello Ball. That's the easiest decision right now, I should say I do like Killian Hayes he I, think he's a promising player Anthony Edwards maybe has promised not a big fan of his shooting percentage in college. Now. I just don't quite know a whole lobe a lot about I'm sorry a whole lot about any other prospect. So because of all of that may not ruling really being sure who he is I do think and I'm sorry I another point and with the Lakers showing size still matters in the NBA like I said then winning this year's title with Dwight. Howard. Javale McGee. Anthony Davis now playing at least White Howard ad playing high minutes showing the center position power for position is not disappearing is still a factor in today's league. So those things going into play and they're being. Like I said with me not being in love with any necessarily being in love with any draft prospect this year. I think the warriors do need to take another route the probably the route of flipping the pit flipping the some assets they have in getting a potential all star or or veteran caliber player to help them win immediately a couple of players that come to mind Marhsall in surgery. Baca should both be available in this year's free agency as they also have the warriors also have a seventeen million dollar trade exception possibly maybe we do a whole sign in trading, they signed him and trade him to the warriors seventeen mill about not sure. Either way surge in mark both big who can spread the floor both play both sides of the ball offense and defensively So I I would love the edition for four Golden State of Mark Assault or Serge Ibaka that isn't necessarily number two overall pick worthy. That is simply a depth move that simply needs to happen. They need more size anymore defense the guy you can spread the floor better. So Marcus sorrow, Marcus, all and Serge Ibaka both would be great players in the Golden State system I believe both would fit well. And like I said, they do have the seventeen million dollar trade exception. So I think Marcus, all or surge would both be perfect for that? Seventeen million dollar trade exception another player comes to mind like Aaron Gordon I think he'd be perfect for that role of very versatile defender can play the three. The four may even play the four. When you put on down the five he he can Kinda guard big at times being a very strong three or four at times. So Aaron, Gorn think also a very suitable seventeen variables. Suitable suitor I should say for that seventeen million dollar trading session as as with surge or Marcus saw. But this year's number two overall pick the potential lottery pick from last year. I'm players like Wiggins Pasco I. Think all of that could potentially be used in. Assets in potential trades and in my opinion, that's a decent hall, a decent not great. Not Great. But a very decent tall. You get the number two overall pick a lottery pick more than likely in next year's draft with how Minnesota's looking. You know I can't see the Angel Russell Karl Anthony towns making the playoffs right away. We'll see what kind of system they have implemented might insure whose head coach right now either way it's. Not, looking great for the for Minnesota next year either So it's safe to say the number two overall pick this year I'll lottery pick next year then you have a seventeen million dollar trade exception you got wiggins potentially you got Paschal so I think that is a decent hall for a potential player or two or whatever they end up doing I think they have a decent trade package for whatever they ended up doing wiggins especially. Could be a big piece in and if they end up making a trade, whatever trade that goes down especially because of his contract, how much he makes a he most likely would have to be moved. If they ended up, selecting are wanting wanting to trade for another all star caliber player. Usually those players have a hefty price tag coming along with them. So more than likely trade for a player like that wiggins will have to go but I do kinda think it somewhat unlikely they give up the piece in Riggins they just acquired. They really haven't had a chance I haven't had. A chance at all to pair him with Steph and clay and dream on the whole system is so so I do think I think it's unlikely I should say they give up the piece in wiggins at they just got unless however unless there's a piece worth their while unless there's a peace peace, they are absolutely in love with I could definitely see them giving up wiggins giving up basically whatever it took for maybe a piece like Janas Auntie Takubo or whatever So unless the it was worth their wild I think it's unlikely Golden State gives up Andrew Wiggins. Recently however, I was searching through the web looking at looking at recent news from warriors, executives, Warriors, beat writers and Warriors..

"Walk into Bob Myers President. Of Basketball, operations with Golden State Warriors three time champion two time. Executive. Of the year Bob Welcome in good to be back with you man. Yeah. Thanks for having me. It's. Interesting Times interesting times. It is and I wonder Bob you are across the country you're in northern California now, the League's return last night. In Orlando a Soobee watched it watched at least some of the game what did it look like to you and you think about when all of this started in it started? In Golden State when you guys were going to be the first team to play a game without fans and how quickly. Escalated to the League, shutting down what were your thoughts watching this from across the country last night. More kind of proud of the effort leadership sacrificed the players I mean people can say that players make a lot of money in coaches and. Everyone around the base. Lucky. So start with that baseline beyond that you know not seeing your family. For weeks months potentially at a time and. They're supporting the League I mean there's twenty two teams there. There's eight that aren't. So the fact that it happened the fact that it was high quality basketball good games the fact that the players are. Really I think sacrifices the key word I hesitate to say it because. A lot of people are sacrificing and much bigger ways but from the professional standpoint and part being part of our league. You appreciate the culmination of a lot of hard work from the League side to do it safely as you can for the players side to Kinda give up a lot of their freedoms and things they're usually able to do. So thankfulness really for all of it looks like it's being done safely. It Bob when you think back to the viruses beginnings in terms of its context with the NBA and I think the League itself was sharing information with the teams. at a daily basis all the way back in January I believe it started maybe even sooner but you're dealing with local municipalities about the arena fans steph curry took a test. You know prior to I guess probably about a week prior, there were some questions of whether Steph might be a positive for the coronavirus. From your understanding of what might happen. How quickly did it feel like? It escalated in your world. Yeah I look in the entire world of sports, but it escalated fast it was you know the the kind of. The moment the headline I thought I'd never see was the NCAA tournaments canceled. That was kind of the one that was. Wow, this is pretty real and I don't know if that preceded. Post Rudy Gobert testing positive right after it was bob and it's funny. You say that because. I was Rudy Gobert. Had tested positive in the league had shutdown that night the next day I want the Bristol and I was in studio which looking back I probably shouldn't have done but I was up in Bristol and I was sitting on the set of sportscenter and Davis was They had a separate set for him and Jay Bilas was at an must've been the ACC tournament and and I was getting ready to go on the next segment and in that moment. When reese was going to switch over to maybe Kevin the gone there say steel and I was waiting to talk about the NBA they word that the tournament was cancelled and then they stayed with that remember sitting there I should have just left the set because they weren't GonNa come to me because that was such a a bombshell story but boy I remember sitting there looking around and try to understand what I was hearing. 'cause it went from well, maybe some the conference will play, but they won't have fans. And all of a sudden for them to say the tournament was cancelled. It's funny. You say that because even though. The NBA you didn't know it was going to be a week ten days, two weeks and it'll come back baby or but the tournament canceled as canceled. You're right. That's felt different. Yeah I think it was the enormity of it. I mean we didn't know who wants Rudy Gobert tested positive and they suspended our league. They didn't cancel our league in that moment. They didn't say the League is over I think a lot of people thought we might come back in a few weeks once we had a better handle on things but the tournament being canceled you knew that it wasn't something that could be recovered. Right? It was it was there's a finality to it. And a loss to it kind of whereas our seasons now continuing yes, it's different. It's a different kind of season but that tournaments never going to be played and you're going to see in the history books two thousand twenty. NCA Champions. Going to be blank and that's That's that's a whole new thing and for some reason that stuck with me but as far as how fast it culminated your question really really quickly and even leaving in San Francisco's all the sudden. You're not leaving your house I mean, it was not just. Professionally, it was society where very abruptly in our city in our market it became. Sheltering in place and there's a lot of fear. Fear of the unknown and it was happened very fast. It's funny. You talk about the torment I remember. Maybe it was right after I think I might A. Did you had an anniversary? Didn't you? You're UCLA team had your? Of Your National Title I. Guess It was. Twenty, five, twenty, five years. And I remember. Right around. Then we started to show we are showing all old NCAA tournament games. That's all we had the air and I'm watching Thai said they go coast to coast and scores and there you are picking him up you're coming off the bench or maybe you're on the floor you you came in Grab A. Clear where I would hand it on the bench can't. For mislead the listeners. And then it ended up a sports illustrated cover, which was fitting. It was you could see your arms wrapped around ties said, nate sort of your torso maybe. But. Not your face. You're the guy behind the guy probe. Really. So right I mean people say near that sports illustrated cover and I said, well, that's wrong. First of all, they should put any part of my body on there. But the fact they didn't put my face was was right. It was whoever chose that picture? Let's not get this guy what did this guy to do anything but now that was those were the tournament. The hard part is in life you know having lived a couple of championships or few on Mba side and one.

"Michael was considered six and a half, Ron six six and a half. And because of that I'm like, well, Kevin Durant, great player. But for whatever reason he's not as valuable to Golden State. The I still says he's a great player, but clearly, he's not worth that six points, so ten days ago, I went ahead and made a best estimate at that time. The Kevin Durant was worth three points and what did the market say? Because here's the thing if the market is king, if we think it's. Perfect, then we're idiots for laying, I'd never bet. Very so we do disagree with the market, but the market's right mo-. We disagree sometimes. But the market is right. Most of the time, what do the markets at the market said Kevin is worth three to Golden State, and we saw that game six when Houston was a hosting Golden State, Houston was a seven point favorite in that game. They would have been about a four point today, just to be clear. We created an analog game. Right. It was game three in game six explain why those games were comparible yet. Because game three was an all in game for Houston. They're down. Oh two at the time. And so that game was Houston laying mice three NAFTA minus four against Golden State, and that all in situation. So fast forward game six similar situation. Houston's fighting for their playoff lives down three games to two need the game like blood, we'd expect that line. Also to be like, minus three NAFTA minus four, but Kevin Durant is out, and that wine was mine, a seven okay, now up to that point up to that point. There were three years of Kevin Durant era in Golden State. And in those three years, a lot of games that Durant was out and curry was in an in those games..

Hey, we have a very special day cast this week because we have a special guest all the way from San Francisco is too. Great Ray Ratto say hi Ray. I I ray. ray. If I bet a dollar on him responding to that prop that way, I would have done it. I'm dying here. Let's get to it. Donate a kidney later this afternoon. All right. So radical comes to us from the bay area, which is great because we wanted to talk about the NBA playoffs in radolph Radom person who we know on staff whose actually awake when these things ended fucking three AM in the morning, east coast time, so. I want to ask you specifically about the warriors who are now tied up to two in a fierce battle of isolated possession with the Houston Rockets are the Golden State Warriors actually in trouble of losing this series. Ray? Yeah. Absolutely. I mean, Houston has been the the bone spur and their he'll for a while. Now, and though they eventually capitulate they make it really hard for the warriors to do the stuff. They wanna do. And even though the warriors won the first two games. It was still hard for them to do what they wanna do. And what they want to do is have three hundred passes in a game. They wanna throw the ball. Basically keep it in motion all the time. So that Houston can't just sit static and make the warriors come to them. And it hasn't worked for him yet in large part because Steph curry and Klay Thompson haven't been able to space the floor. So despite Kevin Durant being the all the Kevin Durant can be the warriors are functioning at about seventy percent officiency. And they're finding out that seventy percent officiency isn't good enough anymore. When you're playing the same team. Over and over again. And it happens to be a good team rather than say, the Phoenix Suns all want to ask you about that. Because I feel like the general take is that the warriors are are sort of struggling in this because they feel like they can turn it on anytime they want and that's not happening at the moment. But is it is it just that is I is it more than just complacency. Why are curry and Thomson not playing as well as they usually are. Because Houston's hard for the warriors to play. You know, they they have harden that they, you know, basically three migraines with two feet. Chris Paul can always agitate anything they they don't have any center at all. So so Clint Capella can do pretty much what he wants. So the wildcards are wide open, Eric, Gordon or PJ Tucker, who's probably the closest thing that David west that the NBA has now, and it's not this is not complacency. That's beating them this is this is the rockets basically saying we're gonna make you uncomfortable every time down the floor. And when you're uncomfortable every time down the floor. You're going to do things you don't want to do. So they're they're holding the ball more their offense doesn't move as well. And even though their defense is fine. And typically when they're not fully engaged their defense stinks. They're finding out that they can't run the offense that they like to run the way they like to run it. It against the team that frankly just screws with them from the time they hit midcourt and then stay screwing them till the end of the possession. It's really basketball more than it is anything else. I'm interested in that. Because this rockets team at least record records wise was worse than last year's rockets team, which took Golden State to seven games. And then Chris Paul was injured the end this eighty three pointers at the same time or in a row. So my question, you, then is if the rockets are are sort of, you know, I don't wanna say have solved them, but have found a way to make them miserable..

"But he's not going to be worth the money. They're gonna end up giving him. It's just that's just not the way the NBA works. No. He's been wildly inconsistent. Just this season. I mean, everyone thought oh scary. Terry yourself on this next. This next grade point guard, he's averaging eight point eight points per game this year own like forty one percent shooting has has a crop. I'm sorry. I'm wrong. He's still a thirty eight percent shooting from the field. Yeah. That's a guy. I want to give a bunch of money to that. That's exciting. Given the max Chris that genius. He is. He is a genius. I can't wait until until Kyrie's all that goes to LA, and then they have no cap room left after that for another max. And that New York gets I don't know who whoever do you think to Harris ironically is an option there. But. It's just the NBA finally starting to sort. It's I one hundred percent think Kevin Durant is staying in Golden State to take the money. I think the first player to leave that team. I know we're gonna talk about them in a second is going to be Draymond in a couple of seasons. Greg final points on why? Anthony Davis won't will sorry will be a Laker in your mind, or I just I think if he doesn't go to LA because they're willing to trade basically the entire franchise before the deadline this week the amount of stuff and the future assets and things that that the Celtics hold. They have you know, you have the kings top one protected pick this year the grizzlies if it falls out of the topic that hick is going the feeling that is Zion. Williamson in the seventy Sixers lineup next year. They have their own pick the twenty twenty they have the Memphis grizzlies pick of it hasn't conveyed outside of the top six the clippers of it hasn't conveyed. I mean, they have all these different options. Means that they can go ahead and send down there, plus young pieces like Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum. I think that they have a better package. It's just they run into that weird rule with the Kyrie Irving situation right now. Yeah. I think the Celtics one hundred percent out. I don't think this is going to resign there. I think he's gonna make that very clear, and they won't give up a bunch of us because of it Lakers are gonna make offers. They're going to make offers and crazy offers and crazy offers crazy offers end of the day. I think they'll Dem's makes the right decision. Does not deal in the division like his mentor. Pop. The does not want them to think teams coming out of nowhere. I really do think the clippers are a team to watch. I think the Knicks could be talked into making a big move right now for Davis with the idea that they could add another big piece off season. It's just not going to be the Lakers when it's all done. And I hope it's done soon. You. All right. Let's take our second break. We'll be right back. Hey, guys. It's Chris Horwood L with underdog sports. And this one's going to be a little bit different. "I'm jeffrey rosen president and ceo of the national constitution center and welcome to we the people the weekly show of constitutional debate the national constitution center is a nonpartisan nonprofit chartered by congress to increase awareness and understanding of the constitution among the american people this past april california police announced they had a suspect for the socalled golden state killer using genetic data from old crime scene samples they applauded the suspects information into a genealogy website and ebeling them to identify his distant relatives and eventually narrow the pool down to find the suspect this case has raised privacy concerns and also people who are think it's great for law enforcement leading many to wonder about the future of genetic privacy and the fourth amendment joining us to discuss and luminated unpacked this important and complicated topic are two of america's leading scholars of privacy law erin murphy is professor of law nyu law school she is a nationally recognized expert in frenzy dna typing and the author of inside the cell the dark side forensic dna andrea roth is an assistant professor of law at berkeley law school she previously served as an attorney with the public defender service for the washington dc public defender service she's written extensively on the use dna in criminal law and procedure erin andrea thank you so much for joining thanks for having me thank you erin let us begin with you you had a memorable quotation in the press saying that using dna matching once you draw that family tree every male on the tree is a suspect until they prove their innocence take us through how exactly the suspect did golden state killer was caught using his genetic data and why once the data is plugged into a genetic database every male on the tree is a suspect until they prove their innocence my understanding essentially what law enforcement did is take friends example they found at the prime seen which they believed to be the genetic signature of the person who committed the crime and then he did the conventional thing which is check existing known person databases for a match and nothing came up i think i heard that it's now been confirmed they did a traditional familial search meaning they look for relatives in those known person databases and nothing came up and so as the final step they decided to use these publicly available databases which are found on line people voluntarily upload their genetic information to these sites usually i think the idea behind them is that because there are so many different platforms offering these kind of recreational genetic links available if you happen to test on ancestry endure me no distant relative tested on twenty three and me you might not find each other simply because you're using different platforms and so this site i think was created to try to solve that problem in say hey you can upload your information here and we will essentially allow you to cross communicate across these divides and so the law enforcement officers created essentially a genetic profile kintu what you would get on one of these ancestry or recreational sites using a form of dna testing isn't generally used in criminal justice called snip testing looking at these single tied polymorphisms or just sort of pieces of the genome that change among into can identify individuals and they're much more powerful to find relatedness in so doing that allowed them to essentially triangulate this relatives so they found somebody who mashed i think they went all the way up the family tree i think i saw somewhere it was to a great grandparents or something of that nature then they built out using publicly available sources and genetic information the family tree from that person i think many people heard that leads them to a relative or someone they believed to be possibly a perpetrator who is in a nursing home that person turned out not to be a match but helped build this family tree out even further eventually again using kind of a mix of genetics and information from public sources they landed on what looked like a suspect syrup tissues lee collected dna from that person and that is the individual who's now accused of the crime so i think one of the things that shows you is you know i'm not sure i've seen it reported or not but this person who was the kind of lynch pin in the.

"Change with the rally but if anything happened the first people you're going to hear about are the golden state warriors are the biggest names in the rally and that's unfortunate so we'd have to prepare dante on this i mean look i'm not gonna say hypocritical because he wasn't at a march steve kerr was at the march for our lives you know week or two before you know when you have the movement if you if we want to call it it's a social justice movement you have different people doing different roles everybody is not going to be out there marching even if they have time that just may not be their demeanor you don't see corporate type people for the most part out marching you at people with money they may not want to march but they may support it financially politicians and lawmakers may not be out there with people rallying and fist up in margin but they can affect it in the courtroom and then the in the justice system and things like that so you have different people with different roles i think look it would have been nice fine if they would have been out there arching maybe it would have been better but i think athletes are doing something significant when they do speak out when they do wear the t shirts because that is keeping the message in the public eye the question is is it fair to make steve kerr explain it that's the question so my answer is yes steve has fostered a political slash sports environment right i'm comfortable with that.
