Latest ship advice on the facts that we know today can you just explain for us within the Liberal Party where she kind of sits and how the factional balancing the potty might play out if you know if her leadership does become come onto question in the next couple of days? So, let us perfectly and a motorist and the mortar it is the dominant faction he eat. Most places now she does enjoy the support of the Liberal Party, but there are some enemies and this is politics. Everybody has enemies but especially, within the rice, they do have concerns about gladys, Berridge declines, and they have been waiting for a moment like this and we have seen we've certain issues over the past few years that that it doesn't take much for. Them to start to become a few whispers and a bit of a pile. Now, we had a very contentious abortion legislation in New South Wales last year, and that was a threat to her leadership. We had an issue early on in the pandemic around the re princess and there were a private chat then around Gladys virgenes leadership so it doesn't take much for. Just a slot mistakes to start. "And where the her party would back and it appears that she does have the support of the party at say there is nobody actively trying to roll her and publicly at least her. Ministers have very senior ministers have come out very much and rallied around her and have showed this important. She's done nothing wrong. She's not kind of resolved she is. Standing, there was no evidence whatsoever this daryl. Maguire. Any benefit from that relationship? Yes there are you one in particular sin voices as you would expect but it all really hinges and the future of Gladys Virgenes ladyship really hinges on evidence that will come out Daryl Maguire essentially says at the Icici today expected she will give evidence again tomorrow as well. WH- what he'll say. Now, we want to get into what may happen if if there are more bombshells coming, from Daryl, Maguire at his appearances. But before we do that, let's talk a little for people outside new South Wales about what kind of person Gladys Berrouadji cleon ease what's her public reputation What what sort of figure is she? Yeah I guess as well before this week. Yeah. Let us virgin she's such a strike choosy think that she's just so by the book almost boring that hardworking very much head down that she's married to the job that she squeaky clean she's almost sank gladys. And how she approaches. Her work at that she so dedicated. It's almost like she. She's the head girl I at school essentially that she you know she always says the right things judy, she's dedicated. You know she's not the funnest person to hang out with. At the party but she is a good solid safe pair of hands and and I think her record in parliament as well in terms of how she's been in premiere especially. In terms of how she's managed the Bush five and the pen dynamic has has also backed up that reputation as well. So she she is popular and with a you lock her personally or not. I think there is a sense in new? South Wales that she sees a solid layup what happens to that reputation given the. Revelations this week it does that have to be rejigged nowadays people reappraising Gladys Birgit cleaned in light of what we've learned. Well, really you can go one of two ways. Yes it is cheek in her armor and at ease in terms of a question of judgment you know she she insists that she has done nothing wrong. But she she said what she's guilty is making a bad choice in her personal life, which is what a lot of people can identify with. Lots of people have made bad choices indicted bad guys all not great women for them as well. So it's it's whether the even humanize her and You know she is A. Lack, the of us, but it could be damaging to the fact that you know what? Yes. People make bad decisions but not everybody is the premier, and if you want to be the premia, then then you have to make certain decisions and be seen to be making good judgement calls and there is an issue in terms of the timing of the relationship is. Now, these relationships added before she was the premia but Darragh Maguire was forced to resign from parliament in two thousand eighteen and he was under a corruption cloud. Now, Glassberg revealed to the SEC that she stayed in that relationship post twenty, thousand eighteen for another two years and she didn't end it. She only ended it when she knew that she would have to go before the current icy icy hearing through. Win. Did you say student Viz relationship with Mr Mogollon well, obviously a few months ago when I was asked to support base inquiry, it became apparent to me that I should have absolutely not context that's where it becomes a bit of a sticky issue and in terms of looking at her judgment widened, she ended in two thousand eighteen when she was the premium. And the New South Wales opposition leader Jodi McKay is having trouble imagining an innocent answer to that question until a month ago Gladys Berridge clan was still in contact with Daryl Maguire. Daryl Maguire who is disgraced by CAC, and he's a person of interest by. Now. That just shows a recklessness from the leader of this state. What it shows is poor judgment from the later of this state. How on Earth Did she think it was okay to still being contact with a disgraced m pay and still be in a relationship with them? Okay. So Gladys Julian is under an unholy amount of pressure and it's not the first time. In fact, it's not even the first time in the past four weeks because this time last month's gladys buried instead down a revolt from the National Party in an incident that has regrettably since become known as Koala guys. And according to the Daily Telegraph this morning, this has been going on behind closed doors for the past six months, and it's now coming out into the open whatsoever is changes made to the Koala Habitat Protection state environment planning policies along police toddle. This was a sash within the coalition partnership between the Liberals and the nationals and the nationals had serious concerns about elements of this new Koala policy, which is essentially a planning policy and it was around environmental protections, own landholders, properties, effected farmers, and addicted development on farms this. New Policy now, the nationals were extremely concerned about the so much so that they threatened to effectively move themselves to the Cross branch and and blow up the coalition agreement. Now got a spare Gigli and showed an amazing amount of car. She stayed down the leader of the nationals, Joan barone Lara, and the Party and simple. If you're going to do that, then I'm GonNa go to Government House and swearing and you ministry, and she really won the day there and they have scenes negotiated that policy but that was an amazing. Show from Gladys Berkeley and she's known for being much more collegiate and really trying to bring people along with her and he doesn't like confrontation. She's known that she doesn't like confrontation like then cheese quite risk averse especially, not knowing how things will play out but it showed as will that perhaps that she was an emboldened later and that she had a lot of political capital and she knew it just because of how well she has handled the bushfires and the pandemic. So that political capital now and that strength of leadership may be tarnished slightly and she may eight net up and she may not be.

David Lammy On Why Climate justice can't happen without racial justice

"I've got to stop by admitting that in many. Me Giving a talk about how climate action can help black communities is surprising. I grew up whole black with a single mother in Psalm. One of the most deprived areas in London in the nineteen seventies and s climate change was the last thing on my mind. Representing Tottenham. Its member of parliament for the past twenty years my focus has been on trying to reduce the deprivation I grew up around in the past the climate crisis never featured at the forefront of my politics because it was never one of the most immediate. Constituents facing or at least it didn't feel like it. Rising sea levels feel unimportant when your bank balance is falling. Global, warming is not your concern when you can't pay the heating bills and you're not thinking about pollution when you're being stopped by the police and so perhaps this is why as the black lives matter movement roared across the world that's been so dimension saving black lives from the climate emergency. The too long those of us who cared about racial justice treated environmental justice is that was elitist and at the same time, the leaders who did focus on climate change we usually white and rarely bothered to enlist the support of black voices in their work. Even Progressive Allies sometimes took votes to granted and assume that all community didn't care or wouldn't understand the truth is the opposite is true. Black people breathe in the most toxic air relative to the General Population We are more likely to suffer from respiratory diseases like asthma. And it is people of color who are more likely to suffer in the climate crisis. This is no coincidence. The cheapest housing tends to be next to the busiest roads and many of the lowest paid jobs are the most pollutant industries. People of color consistent deny the bottom of the housing educational and Employment Ladders. This story connects black communities across the world from London to lay goes to La black-americans are exposed to fifty six percent more pollution than they course white Americans breed seventeen percent less air pollution, the May produce. It gives a whole new meaning to the black lives matter slogan I breath we all right. We know the name of George Floyd who was murdered by the police, but we should also know the name of eloquently Deborah. Ella a nine year old mixed race girl from southeast London was killed by fatal asthma attack evidence suggested was caused partly by the unknow fool levels of air pollution near her home. And it's not only urban areas where black lives are disproportionately under threat from climate change. My parents had country of Guyana is one of the most vulnerable countries on earth to the effects of climate. Change. So far, gladys contributed relatively little to the climate emergency, but it's one of the country's facing the most serious threats from it. While the annual carbon dioxide emissions beheaded the United States is a staggering sixteen point. Five metric tons in Guyana is just two point six, it is a patton repeated. The Globe those countries that have contributed least the climate breakdown mainly in the global south will suffer the most from floods droughts and rising temperatures. This is a patent suffering with a long history. The exploitation of our planet's natural resources of always been tied the exploitation of people of Color. The logic of colonization was to extract valuable resources from our planet through force paying no attention to its secondary effects. The climate crisis is in a way colonialism's natural conclusion. The solution is to build a new coalition made up of older groups most affected by this emergency black people in American cities who are already protesting that they cannot breathe. People of Color in Ghana, watching sea levels rise to the point where many of their homes become uninhabitable young people in places like Tottenham London afraid of the world they will grow older and progressive allies from all nations of all races, religions, creeds, and ages on this side. All demanding recognition that climate justice is linked to racial justice, social justice and intergenerational justice to

"Okay. We don't have any record of her claiming to be married to this columnist before this article, but obviously she was. Record from her but he's a bit tree at Dot said that he was married to her and his victory is the month before this article. So that is mentioned of the two of them being married before decided comes out but there's also a denial from him. She or someone else must have just been generally claiming that. or any of these obituaries or anything happened like obviously, he can't claim that they weren't married off to his Bichir has been published. Yes spa whether he actually did say they want married he was previously married to another woman before these claims and I couldn't really find cle- information about whether it will how that marriage had ended. So it's possible that this article that says J. Gibson denied that for being married to Gladys Bentley. Influenced by paps this other woman who was married to JD Gibson and didn't want gladys to be connected to him. I. Don't know I just. It's one thing to make up dawn. Sends a real human bus. Yeah. So we're up to three counts three. Thank weddings. It's interesting because like when you say he had just died, it makes it seem like she was capitalizing that death potentially but obviously not because she'd or ready been saying that before he died the Oscar also does not reference the fact that he's dead. Sorry, that's fire. In the article it's accompanied by kind of domestic fighter graphs upheld like cooking food and making a bad and the captain's alike, gladys makes the bed for her husband jt and like the oncle does not acknowledge that you're. A man okeydokey Jj does not appear in the. Correct data is just mentioned in the article and there's photos of gladys domestic setting, and I don't even know if those fighters take in a house or in a different stage location, they look very staged. This is getting into court board. What role is him being dead plan this. So obviously, the story existed before he died probably it's mentioned his a bit trees on Yes At least on that. Like I'm wondering if this story was around but now she's like well, I mean it's not going to say anything I can run all like what? They have to consider the possibility that they were married but yeah, I mean maybe they were married likely and she is very weird that the ebony article doesn't mention that he's dead even with like an editor at the start being like sadly, gladys husband pause away off to the writing of this article nothing. Yeah that is weird. But like I've that contributes towards being true or false no, that's just another confusing I mean I think that can be put down just to lie laziness like editorial. Yeah. I was GonNa say also just editorial timelines in terms of. Like getting magazines printed. Yeah. That's true. That's actually are and. Raise the question of I. Guess She was under the impression that he was like alive when the article was being written on these photographs will be taken avidly on that show time line. Yes. So then if it's a lie and she thinks he's alive and like do we know how he died expected from memory? I think he was raising the young and it was like a hottest half only young young but. He wasn't like eight seventy or eighty. Okay. Sir. She writes his article and takes a bunch of stage photos about her married life with this man who is around potentially married to another woman and definitely going to continue living and then he dies I'm suggesting she. I'm genuinely not I realized that that very much. Suggesting kill did what are you doing? I'm not. I'm just saying that like she didn't really we advise like if we assume that was did not know that JD gives them was about to die when this was reading either gladys and J. T. with genuinely married, and we can assume that for example, members of his family off previous wife or something like that decided, they didn't want that to be part of his public image and Death Addison jt when never married and gladys faked a wedding to a real living human who could easily deny that or he would have said like all right I'll go on this with you if they will friends humming. Puts his family, was. Like. That's true. That's always yeah. If. There's any reason for the general public at the time to view this suspicion or is there. Suspicion will the thing of her being straight and I to these men I don't think. Like, she was nine to be a lesbian but I don't think that people would have immediately what she was lying. If she said all I was a lesbian but then I married a man like there's actually quite a few come out in response. This ebony ought co from other queer people who say things like I've had this experience I was a lesbian I'm married to a man now I know exactly what you've been through at like that kind of thing. Happened, the lesbians went on married men whether by choice. Oh, by social pressure, this wasn't an unrealistic story. Except for those specific detail, make it very suspicious. Yeah. Told me to talk in factually place and the same month. The article was published really off to the article was published. Gladys did marry a man named Charles Roberts this marriage really occur we have photos together actually happened they lost butts cash one factual marriage three potentially fictional ones correct. I just want to keep track yes we'll anymore marriages. scheduled. Okay. I don't know how to feel about. Why. I mean I guess we do have like next to fashion about most of gladys's life. Yeah. Yeah we do. We can't be like lack of evidence is damning nar the whole thing with is bizarre yet baffling. I really thought when we got into this article, it will be much more about lioness emotional and mental state around declaring shields and queer anymore, and it says it's become this cope. is she making things? So okay. Yeah. Moving on from that nonsense I do have a few more things that I want to say about this odd. So as I mentioned Ebony listed this article as a self help article and Gladys concludes with the hype that quite if I can steal some unknown youths tempted by the law something different from succumbing to the snare and instead turned the path of righteousness business I would feel some redemption from my sins. However Gladys still speaks about herself in present tense as equipped present in the article entry also speaks very sympathetically about the que- community she likes that. Is, Legion and our heartbreak his inconceivable very few people can understand us. We wins at the many suggestions of what should be done to rid the world of the AB normalcy to which we clean. So obviously, we can speculate about Gladys's migrations in writing this article, but I think even within the article, we can kind of see this conflict between declaring Quinonez as seen the thing. She's left behind the thing that she really encarta other people's leave behind and at the same time talking about kind of social responses to put a stop to Queen as harsh and saying that we have people in beyond a steward. Anna suffering inconceivable heartbreak inside I don't think this things really contradict necessarily in her presentation of them like if she's presenting it as like a clear people. Who are afflicted than? That's certainly something you could say and therefore side it shouldn't be so hard on them. You know that they need to find their way back or whatever yeah and I guess link that to like the thing she says about when she was a kid like my parents didn't need to take me to dock decide needed to be logged given like wholesome hobbies. Basically, she's saying that Queer people. For love and being directed back onto the right path can stop being Quia and if you're going to make an argument, the quick people should be cared for more in the context of being published in a major publication.

"That it was just the police didn't like couldn't find ways to stop it czar I would definitely blaze it. It was the case here that there was no specific law that said women can't wear pants but was like nine. That's not right. We won't allow it suddenly. Like, sporadic laws specifically against crossdressing coming around like the end of the nineteenth century places in the United States K. I can't maybe that works on the way. Yeah. They may have been was like were intended for specific behaviors but were then applied he yet. Where realistically had probably spent forty years not being applied in that circumstance because the holy woman wearing pants yeah. Just who were queer or year actively challenging Knowles Gender and sexuality. Yeah had. So therefore, the law had them yet that's definitely true when that could have been around forever they. They just pulled out right now to target like formats, for example, similarly when gladys briefly performed at reopen do Bongi Club. In nineteen forty, four reviews described as great test and the club was shut down by police. So it is a one to one correlation in that time a good shut down because of gladys. Yeah. I believe. So in my fifties, gladys changed her image although she did continue to a p. She, added wearing address and traditionally feminine. Strings of bells, and then in nineteen fifty two, she write the article in Ebony that we've referred to. So like sort of publication is happening like what's time? It's African American dislike kind of Media Culture Entertainment, kind of magazine. was published in the self help sections are the ideas help other queer people stop being queer it's generally like a kind of middle class conservative. Audience the article glass published was apparently written to publicize photographing, which is titled If the species that factory was never published, and unfortunately the manuscript if it ever existed was completed has been lost damn. Yeah. That's so unfortunate. It is very unfortunate. Yeah. I mean maybe it's somewhere but probably not I'd say her place just an attic somewhere. Yeah. One day I mean if the article was written to publicize the autobiography I would suggest the autobiography would have a similar time to the obstacle in kind of being about renouncing her Kwena spot. But that'd be more details could. We do. Be For us to work with. As outspoken about the ebony article begins by talking about glass childhood as we describe inside of this podcast and it talks about the fact that she believed influence to into growing up into a queer adult, she goes on to talk about how she was unable to find personal happiness and therefore she sought happiness through fame instead bought quite still in my secret hot I was weeping and wind because I was traveling the wrong way to real love and true happiness. She then goes on to tell us about half things changed win while living in l. a. a man named Don she says, he had me very confused because I couldn't understand what I was doing letting normal. Man Pay attention to me, but gladys dawn grew close and gladys began to consider marriage concerned that she wouldn't be able to resist to watch calls her old habits. She went to say doctor who told her quite from the article your sex organs are infantile. They haven't progressed past the stage of the fourteen year old child. He prescribed lettuce a six month course of thrice weekly hormone shots which would overcome predominant male hormones. A treatment which gladys says help to change her life completely following Gladys Mary Don. So this contrast with what gladys set earlier in the hospital with a claim that we tabled a made not born she she offers us a physical biological explanation for. Whether there's any truth to this story I do not know, but this was definitely one treatment that could be prescribed for homosexuality time. So I'm very interested in Don. We don't know anything about Don t doesn't provide a son in Don. Okay. So I guess like in terms of y she gradually changed her life in perspective and presentation etc doesn't obvious explanation for that in the general shift of the countries like culture and political climate regarding these things. But like you know it's worth looking at other factors as well and I I would just like no but about Don. And his point of view on her life. So general progression of events she despise Don Don was a friend of a friend. He was Usseileh she was originally very apprehensive. Getting to know him because she didn't like sales generally she bounded by kind of represented the worst masculinity bought she gradually got tonight don they started seeing each other it's not really clear how romantic that was at that point. Definitely talks about being kind of confused about herself. And during that stage of their relationship she says that she told done everything about harassment about herself and dawn very understanding and was like Yep I kind of knew all this already it's okay and then later on, don't asked if he could kiss her she said, yes, and from that point she started thinking she wanted to marry him than to let go on dawn. Did they definitely get married? She's a real. Not. As they got married I've never seen a record of the marriage. Are there. Are there other accounts odom not that I know of? This. So it was all I. Don could just be like a like a fake part of this story that kind of fits with this narrative of gladys becoming more like conventional ahead for sexual I just like we've had this whole simply fictional game. And our we have a possibly fictional head marriage. Yeah. It's just really interesting to how both sides of. The song was going to be lied to argue about and I think you know fundamentally based on her words. It's pretty meaningless. Dog was she gay or she strikes. I. Don't think that's a meaningful argument to have. But if you are going to, it would be like, okay. Well, he is the evidence like there's no evidence as. You're going strictly by. Marry to confuse you FEM. Yes. I wanted to ask say we mentioned Eliot that gladys was like bisexual but played up being a lesbian for the publicity. That's what Abel's. Okay. So do we know anything else about previous and the way she's? The way she wants out in the ebony optimal. Though. This is the first time she. Yeah. Yeah I was Gonna say that that seems like the vibe and I wonder like if this relationship code and if mobile's riot and she had had relationships with men previously like what was the difference to her? is that like dawn as a guy comes from the navy? Heterosexual culture and these were men who maybe more. Than the milia she was in then a bit like obviously just speculation 'cause we know nothing about it. So never mind. So Gladys Kansas in Ebony article it marriage to done didn't lost that suspicious all that. She didn't tell us that at the time of the article she's now married to columnist jt gives them had died the month before the article was published obviously natural exactly when the article was pinned and although he's a bitch in the african-american magazine, jet refers to him glasses husband another newspaper audible from around this time tells us that prior to his death he denied ever being married to gladys, and as far as we nine record exists of the marriage k run this timeline by me again place. to dawn, and then when did she say that marriage is either saw she doesn't really give to don fortunately she decided to ask my met on I married dawn. It didn't work out but it was a good experience that helped me become a straight. Okay. But does she say that like a few years later or or she kind of be like I was definitely married to don a real living man But it's over like is there like what's the timeline of those claims like is that all in the one article took it's all in this. And then when does she come to be married to this other guy? So it's all in the same article. So in March well, she says, then I, married jt Gibson. So this oculus in August nine, hundred, fifty, two, jt Gibson died in July nineteen, fifty, two, he's bitter I Miss Mary to her but August nine, fifty, two, four, the Ebony article comes out an article comes out which says jt Gibson denies ever having been married Gladys Bentley before he died. So we have no idea of the timescale she's implying of like when she married dawn or how long she was nothing. All right. Well, okay. Okay. We don't have any record of her claiming to be married to this columnist before this article, but obviously she was. Record from her but he's a bit.

"The one that was cited for this claim did not include a mention I listened to several others who's like catalog record suggested they could mention that didn't mention that doesn't mean it doesn't exist because so much tape. The difficult thing with art history issue like control F. in them. Yeah. That's transcript to these unfortunately roller wedding. By Mabel does talk about other queer marriages that took place in Harlem generally the lighter than supposed wedding in the late nineteen thirty s or early nineteen forties when Mabel talks about and the couples she talked about generally those couples I've mentioned already that we would consider like butch femme couples sheriff has to them as Mama and Papa. Various other phases. That's really interesting. The idea that the these full lies weddings yet relationships in the late thirties and early because by that point, you know you're starting to get into McCarthyism in the kind of push back against these communities. Yeah. Yeah and so you're kind of pasta the peak. Of those as like. Intensely quiz basis. Yeah. I. Choose to call about the late thirties and early forties something be like just before we kind of see this. Yeah. As we talked about a bit in the wonder woman episode, this was a love. quit CAL for movements. In that time as well during mobile turn and then yeah, is very much like just toward the end of the war as the wolf finishes you start to get. The real pushback and like when you think crackdown on something, you always have to assume it's because that was flourishing yet. Yeah. Yeah. So. Yeah. It's just interesting because I feel like generally at least my perception is song who hasn't studied this era. He's the yet like I think of it as like tweenies intimate. In like. You don't necessarily think about the late thirties early forties. Yeah. Yeah. And like in terms like que- performance that's true like I guess the public face. But obviously in private was continuing. Yeah I. Guess it was. As much of an audience whilst those war on Yeah I guess that's true as well. That's not just a quick thing. Yeah. Yes. I Mabel talks about how they've couples would get a marriage license and signed the marriage registry by presenting themselves as a heterosexual couple, and then they hold a ceremony that pretty much mirrored a traditional heterosexual welden except that it had all female cost including the guests. So she talks, for example, about one woman whose mother gave her away at the old and a game minister named Reverend. Monroe would officiate these weddings and apparently also officiated mailman weddings. So these are legal these illegal weddings. Good Leo. Gay Wedding in the night thirty. Yeah Yeah. HOUSE AMAZING I was GONNA say they're not entirely legal because they fly it on a legal document but like belial Biz legal documentation that these weddings. Yes. There is legal documentation of these wedding. That's correct. The people involved in the were conducting an illegal act. We don't have a problem with that. And the law didn't know that. So that's fine. So they using fake names. Yeah. I mean from what I got. The real name for one of them who I come masculine is version of name or something like that for the. Yeah. Okay. Well, they also apparently like us the name of like a gay male friend that they had who was willing to offer his name for that purpose. That's like the ultimate like gay men being friends with Lesbians. Again like. Solid. Absolutely. It's already the that's fantastic. Wonder. How much of this was them actually like tricking people and how much this was people being like willing to be tricks? Yea. I Yeah I mean I guess it really depends sitting on the register that day. Yeah. But maybe you knew that like if you WANNA choose day, Tim, would be the highest. Tim was just like Yup Matthew Absolutely. Muzzle Tall. Not Turn that story that could be the case. Yeah y'all need to get like one gay working at the that's true. The weekly like gays get down to the. Registry, office. Although we don't have a record of gladys's marriage like there's definitely a paradigm which could have taken place. Okay. Let's mobile's bull in that environment. Yeah. I could definitely as have happened. We don't have a record unless we can find this type of Mabel that did happen. So the cited tape of Mabel. She took about weddings in that type, but just not gladys's winning Yeah. I think she does talk about weddings tape. She also talked about weddings and several. So. Yeah. Still the fact that she does talk about weddings but not the specific one. Does to make me more suspicious. Maybe this is the type that whoever meant. Aside, it just isn't a valid citation. Yeah. The fact that they provide a specific date like Mabel says this happened in nineteen thirty one. Made me think that Mabel must like they say may will said this happened when in reality Mabel said, this kind of match happened yet I. If anyone wants to thrown listen to all mammals tapes then police not find out where she mentioned 1931 yeah. So nine thirty, three prohibition laws were repealed ironically instead of making the nightlife in Harlem more, Frayed, the repeal of prohibition made things less. So as the sale of alcohol in Nukes, bars and clubs became tightly controlled. The State Lethal Authority was established which police behavior in bars and venues could lose Aleka license if they were found to be disorderly, which could mean queer performances for many venues became too much of a risk in ninety four gladys was performing at King's terrace nightclub where she fronted a chorus of what newspaper articles at the time described as eight liberally painted male CPN's with a feminine voices gestures Sepia. they use it to in black. I'd never encampment to I researched this episode but yeah, like CPI. Photo at its Brown in this performance, gladys performed among other things a seemingly endless song in which every word nine to vulgar profanity is used in much that yes. Nineteen thirty four a formal complaint with made about climate performance and a few weeks later, kings terrace club was closed down. It's not clear. These two events would directly connected, but the definitely by symptoms of a change taking place in the culture around Queens Sexuality the Harlem Club Scene At this time from kings terrace. Last move to headlining a show at the Benji Club will have a fomative continue to grow in by size and self conscious quiz. He issue is accompanied by a chorus of forty or fifty pansies as they're referred to. Once again, a feminine male performance sometimes in drag sometimes just. Like sexy Salas and stuff like that and hilarious actively referenced the way in which she plays with gender one. For example, being nothing now perplexes like the sexes because when you see them switch you can't tell which is which Banke as you can tell from like this comment relied both on the kind of performance of citation of blackness for a wide audience that were even Bob. customers many black people in Harlem. So Gladys as selling out by into work there. One. Journalist described the club as ironed controlled by white racketeers patronage of slumming whites, petty gangsters, and I suppose we don't know gladys. Knight in her article. Got Stokes right positively Acharya bought. Yeah. She doesn't really address this Kinda racial tension at all. So we have no idea. Gladys was very successful at the evanger club and she spent three years there. But during that time, we had gradually decreasing her act. So as she'd wants being referred to as the king, she was now referred to as Broadway's Queen of Song Jazz Anta backup pansies were replaced by troop of women cold Yuban gets eventually even this wasn't enough and ninety seven at had its license revoked in nineteen thirty eight gladys left New York, and she moved to l. a. where she lived with him up with quick able content increasingly sean from mainstream baas Gladys Fan and audience in a growing number of quiz specific bars. And Clubs on America's West Coast from nineteen, forty, two, nine, hundred, forty, five, she was a regular act at San Francisco Mona's openly lesbian club which marketed itself as the place where goes will be boys despite several run. INS with the police maynas was a naturally long running club clubs like miners and like the queer clubs on the West Coast in general generally shut down as quickly as they started up however at the nineteen forties and nineteen fifties, it became increasingly difficult for gladys to continue career in the same mould that she'd begun. Performing in L. A. In one, thousand, nine, hundred for example, she had to seek a special permit to be allowed to wear pants onstage. Jesus yeah, like I've not that surprising but also like did she get it, she did get it. I believe what Sir Evaluation to web hands on stage either night what the details of that likely will process were at. Like, what was the little? Public Indecency when we did our website on starring will I did a lot of looking to say if that will like specific laws against cross dressing. Or if it was just kind of a general, the police didn't Leica and I recall from that context in New York.

"Just an idea of what she sounds like. Jazz Blues People just go so hard and I love him. Now Imagine doing that from ten evening until door. Yeah. I call him engine doing anything from ten evening who sleeping sleeping. Yeah. Yeah Yeah. That is sir up to cheese like just starting out effectively. Yeah. So if that clips from related to she kind of stay performing the same sort of stuff for quite a while then yes she does she kind of has a pot becker that's in Harlem from the she gets there in the twenties until she leaves in the late thirties and we'll talk A. Bit about how music develops during that time basically, the trend is that it does get a bit more conservative in for example, like the lyrics, the things she sings about bought understand it's basically the talk musical the way through. So I got US performance was characterized by two things masculine dress and very filthy lyrics unfortunately have recordings of those lyrics because they weren't appropriate for recording. But a particular talent was improvising obscene new lyrics to popular songs. We'll the young writing and nineteen thirty nine tells us so adept was she at this odd that she could take the most tender ballot and converted into a new lawyer with filthy lyrics and often audience singing along. So yeah. The nature of these performances by Thomas Perspective of decency and copyright means that they were never recorded. So does she have a standard repertoire? She constantly I think from what I gathered she kind of developed a standard as you went on by this eloquent career, she was just constantly improvising. Yeah. I. Guess It was probably just you know this is popular right now. Yeah or someone's requested this song it's also very likely that glasses live music was explicitly Quia. Once again, we have recordings of this but I say this because blues in general at the time was a very quiet genre. So the voice that black women could gain through blues music of one of them a chance to take control of the image and particularly of the iron sexuality in ways that broke out of the kind of dichotomy. That they would generally forced fit into which is kind of a decentralized model figure or a kind of younger exotic hyper sexualize young woman figure, and through expression themselves blues were able to expand beyond that and express a wider and more complex range of sexuality with regard to that. Wheel Eric's were very common amongst both male and female saints in Nineteen Twenty-three. For example, hunt saying if you don't want me tell me to my face because five of six women longed take your place in nineteen twenty eight Who was also a very masculine blues singer sang went out last night with a crowd of my friends. They must have been women because I don't like men. These are just two examples of like a huge list of lyrics I had written down in my night. So then out of the ordinary by means. So how have those lyrics come down twelve like their recordings? I don't know why it's the case that gladys didn't record any Quia music because the definitely were recording music. This time I want you say recorded is that limited to like a recording studio earlier at the yet more because obviously knocking at a mobile phone? Yeah. Yes. Their records that were produced with studio as records. explicitly. Yeah, that's really interesting. It's very cool and gladys didn't do any of it. They like mainstream recordings. Jizzle I know in terms of like publishing there are a lot of like niche presses opening up for the black community to. Expand their but was at a with like recording studio. I don't think are recorded by black music Music labels generally had lie they make mainstream music, what they called race records, which was specifically black music full black people, anti days with generally marketed on that race record labels to weekly like referring using rice to refer to African American people and culture. What's the norm at the time? What was normal at the time? That's not a derogatory phrase at the time and is there any sense that it's more possible for say a woman to record with the label that is equipment or is it same? Pretty? Equal in that regard I found more examples of Queer women but the definitely were examples of men as well. And I'm not sure if that was just examples that I can must because I was reading about a woman arc, we women generally wear more publicly acceptable in in the public eye, but yet the definitely women. Doing this and seeing about mile queen this as well. So despite never recording Queen Music with a record label, gladys swats very open about Queer identity, which brings me to the second aspect of her performance which I mentioned, which is masculine dress. Let us described his style as quite immaculate white full dress shirts with stiff collars small by ties scopes, Oxford's short eaten jackets and hair straight back. She later moved on wearing skirts to wearing her trademark white Tuxedo, which some of my famous photo is of her wearing. You've probably seen if you've got a picture of Gladys Bentley guy have now it's very striking it's GonNa. Is a white Tuxedo is pretty striking. It. That's that's excellent and as she had in childhood, she maintained style off stage. On stage. So she's just wearing a white Tuxedo, twenty, four, seven placed. A White Tuxedo Dan Mayo employment she's got seven White Tuxedos. Yeah. Won't fade away. So you can imagine that if you want. We'll put the fight on blogs. So if you're listening to this, you can go to our blog and look at the final and it will probably be the company image for this episode as well. Gladys was far from the only person in the Harlem and Community Assigned Female Birth wearing this style of clothing although we don't have record of glasses in the West has self she's often identified as a boondoggle which has quite similar to how we understand the would butch in a lesbian..

A look at Gladys Bentley, American blues singer

"Before we get started as we normally do at the start of a person's life I'm going to jump in when gladys was forty five years old in the year nineteen, fifty, two revolutionnaire. Arcada. Their time travel is upset. Yes. Heavens the reason why jumping in he is because nine fifty two is the at that one amount main sources was written and I want to talk about that. Source. Pot, Abou- review before we actually. Talk about that. So in the nineteen forties and nineteen fifties in the USA politicians like Senator Joe McCarthy was spearheading moral and political panicked about queer people in the understanding that we who are not only immoral but also susceptible to blackmail and therefore more likely to become communist spies. Goddess Bentley had built her career on being an openly queer and gender non conforming blues performer in nineteen, Fifty, two in. The African American magazine Ebony, she write an article titled. I'm a woman again in which she talks very late at queasiness before renouncing it and championing heterosexuality and Hetero normativity. In this article, she says, I became a woman again when I discovered unaccepted the one glorious thing which for so many years I had bitterly fought with all my heart mind and body the law of antennas, the devotion of a man. I thought it was kind of Jesus. Is, the man Jesus, the matters not Jesus She did definitely become more involved with her church later in her life, but she doesn't necessarily link that to her. Queens. So like Jesus here but only incidentally. Background character. Incidental Jesus is my Christian rock band. Do you come across. Do. Christian covers rock songs. Both I anyway. What happened YOU CLAP We'll talk a lot more about the background to this article and what was happening in life at that time. When we get to that I, think the sort of political background McCarthyism is. Hardly the main you need to know that, and the reason that I wanted to bring this up and mentioned at the start is because this article is the only information we have about Gladys inhering voice. Well, that's quite a pickle. It is quite a pickle that we are. And it's also the only source of information we have about her childhood before she was about twenty one. Okay. So that's that most by graphical information comes from what can be gleaned from newspaper is nobody's ever written a biography. All Gladys on the work of like interviewing people who knew anything like that is that is something that could still be done. Do you think she was born in nineteen ninety seven so like a lot of people anyone who knew her in her early life is GonNa be dead. Yeah. But from headlight alive that would probably still be some still alive could talk about her bought definitely have to be done pretty soon. I'm not aware of anyone working on unfortunately, but hopefully, someone is yeah. So I just wanted to raise that heavy keep in mind that that's the source of wealth with before we start talking about glass at life. So I got us was born in Philadelphia on the twelfth of August nine, hundred seven to George and Mary Bentley. She was the oldest of four siblings in a black working class family according to Gladys's article in Ebony Mary had wanted a son and she was very disappointed when she had a door refusing much as tasha child on Nessa Child. Gladys. Intern says she always felt repulsed by men including her father brothers and uncles and she says. I suppose the reason was that they will admire while I was scorned from ninety nine or ten. She began to steal her brothers choirs at first to feel she was getting even with them but then I began feel more comfortable in boys quarries than dresses have parents teachers objected to gladys as masculine dress. The gladys was obstinate and she and her parents eventually reached a compromise by gladys wear what's called a meaty blouse. So that's what you'd pictures like kind attritional Salas like a navy ship and she went out with a skirt during elementary school gladdest about to crush on a female teachers she tells us in Class I sat the hours watching her and. Wondering, why I was so attracted to at night I dreamed I didn't understand the meaning of those dreams until later. I. WanNA mention this because it's got his first experience of being attracted to a woman that we know about and also just think it gives you a bit of an idea of how in her article the Ebony she does talk openly about like being que- and being attracted to women and wanting to present in a masculine way and these kinds of things like she doesn't deny that this is an aspect then renounces it and decides that Hetero. normativity is better suicide angle on this that she used to feel this way but she has stopped. Or the she feels this way but has decided that that's not any good. I tell you. It's more than she used to feel this way but has stopped. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. It's hard to say because she does sort of talk about talk about there are other people who have the same who had the same experiences in she refers to those groups like she uses like way if she's talking about painting society and she's still kind of identifies with those groups. But at the same time, she says as things like I've become a woman again now I love man I'm able to Vin into this female role Besse so I'm interested to hear how gender and sexuality. Interacting glasses life. Easier we go through what I was saying I've become a woman again. that. Yeah. I really interested to hear your thoughts on that. I, don't really nine because we have so little in gladys invoice except this. Has a lot of a lot about the stuff going on and influence why she write this article. It's hard to say how gladys feels about gender, but we will talk about Nemo. As. Gladys grew older cy when she was a teenager, her mother thought taking doctors. She doesn't explicitly tell us in Ebony article the reason for this but it's apparent that it was connected to fairly to perform femininity in the way that was expected of him. Gladys tells us she believes parents meant well botched quite what my family did not know was that. I didn't need a doctor, but love's affection and healthy interests to supplant the malignant growth festering inside of me, and she seems to argue at this point in the article that it was the original rejection by her mother that fest push towards her gender non conforming behavior and that her parents subsequent relations attempting to force her to conform to femininity. Gladys ran away to New York City. It was the dawn of the prohibition era. And speakeasy. That illegally sold liquor sprang up across the city. The Harlem. Renaissance was in full swing. Gladys. Immediately began performing at House, parties and illegal. Brownstone. Basement. Clubs. When the Clam House Harlem's immensely, Popular Gay speakeasy announced an opening for a male piano player gladys jumped at the chance. It was there at one hundred, thirty third street and Seventh Avenue the Gladys's career skyrocketed in a top hat and a perfectly tailored tuxedo gladys belted out original blues, numbers, and Lewd parodies popular songs she often tangled with male entitlement and abuse simultaneously declaring her own sexual autonomy and flirting with women in the audience. In tackling the Patriarchy Gladys was continuing the legacy of performers like Bessie, Smith, and Marini. But Gladys Incorporated, her own sexuality, and Gender Presentation into her act. Drew crowds from around the country with her performances becoming Harlem's most famous lesbian entertainer a feat given the renaissance's thriving queer community. Gladys was also amused. She appeared Langston Hughes's autobiography, and now public letters between Harlem socialites and as a character in at least three novels. Hughes wrote that she was an amazing exhibition of musical energy. A large dark masculine lady whose feet pounded the floor while her fingers pounded the keyboard, a perfect piece of African sculpture animated by her own rhythm. In the mid, nineteen thirties gladys began performing at the you Benji Club just a few blocks away from the clam house. There it was said gladys commanded a cast of thirty often appearing onstage with the backup crew of drag Queens but post prohibition gladys struggled to find your footing her fame in New York and elsewhere had grown but she herself had become less acceptable as depression trudged on. Yeah this every time I talked to people about a show. I've already seen. There's a show that I'm watching that I got. Who's like I'm just starting to watch this and this one was like I'm sorry I don't remember which thing happens in which that week because that's show won't goes everywhere. A lot of shows do that but also westworld. Yeah season three. I think everything about the show West wing down episode by episode. What's that one you kept talking about on the last season or on the law season in the bedroom? Or something the movie in the bed. Oh that's a movie okay. I thought it was a show. Alright well anyway. We have a question about episode five of remove on. I I really. I really need to know what's up with dogs. That's like there are always dogs. Doing Weird Shit leading plot lines and doing stuff. They're not our dogs because when he's when hot cop is in the car watching the guilty remnant house and he gets he falls asleep and gets woken up by the dude with two dogs. Just like ferociously barking. There's constantly three times understand what that guy said. He couldn't understand titles baby. Either your house will. He was talking about how they own the whole neighborhood. There's too many people there now. And and he was like I wouldn't hate it if they all died. That was casting when they're like. "So yeah. We didn't put a video last week. It got caught up in some other things in waiting on approvals so this week probably have to videos coming. No one will be the shaper. I think we discussed that last week. And then and then I also Since make an video had a conversation with one of the guys from shaper and and Dessum really cool people and they just wanted to hear my my my feedback. Good or bad and it's just sounds like they are just committed to improving that machine. Which is it's a pretty easy machine to work with as of right. Now Sean Sean Sean Great Dude. He helped me out when I did the video. Shut OUT TO SEAN over ship. We met workbench come. I met him. He's very tall. Yup got a nice tall nice. That's to qualities. I look for in a any human. It's not true gladys we get another video coming out on bending plastic bent plastic in a few different ways and that one is done. It's waiting for the sponsor to approve it and that should be any day we There's a bunch of DIY. Plastic bending. Jackson were people will take like a heating element from a A hairdryer or space heater. There's a couple of other ones. I bought one of those single hot plate. Burners cost twelve bucks and I was going to take the guts of that which pretty basic and wire up a thin wire to to To heat up like a really small area plastic and it turns out that the coil the burner part is bendable so I was able to bend it into a straight line and then I of shut it into some tubing to keep it nice and straight because it wants to spring back and we were able to get nice perfect long straight heat Into the plastic for for nice easy bands and it was one of those accidental. A Ha moments and it was an worked great and a lot of the jigs. They have this hinged back. So you can ben and we found that we made one and it just complicated the process so we just heated the plastic over the straight line and then just spend it by hand was so much easier and release to get nice precise Ben's because after like forty seconds wherever you're holding it'll just stay right there cool so I have a question about the whole plastic bending thing when you went into making that into a video like with. That was the intent of the thing in when you finished. It was there as much Were more or less like technique or tips. You know when you went through the whole fan. Did you get out of it what you were expecting or was it more or less or what? I think I knew what a what a only in the jig making process for for the one technique did I. I thought this is going to be super easy and just going to unhook the burner and I'm going to put a wire in there And then that's whatever and it didn't work out as easy as I thought and I thought I needed this. Bendy jig thing. That just complicated. So I didn't really learn any new techniques or pick up some new tidbits. It was more about the Jig of. I thought I needed this. Everybody says you need this. Turns out you don't there's an easier way and And we so we did one with the Heating wire we did another moment. Just a heat gun and some clamps in some some calls to keep the plastic in place. We did one with toaster oven. We one with boiled water like a like a double boiler type thing and it was the boiled water in a record in their takes it like as soon as the record hits the water you can bend it to any shape you want and then you have like five seconds to shape it and then it's stays there and if you mess it up throw it right back. The water remembers plastic. Seems to remember. It's original position so if you screw something up just heated up again or I WANNA go back to that original state and then you can kind of Redo what you did It was one of those videos are. It's just a pure tip video but it's going to help me design projects in the future because now I know I can do this quickly and easily also learned that the shooting video shooting photographs of clear acrylic is hard impossible. Yeah I made this one this one show. GonNa make sure you're wearing pants when you shoot stuff you do you do because you never know now we? We made this one shelf piece. Still this idea from one of the books that I have where you think of it as a as a flat sheet and then an upside down U is cut out of there and then you take that you and you bend down and you have a shelf and we did like a two tiered shelf thing and that was clear. I was photographing that for the Youtube. Thumbnail make you can't see what this so I had actually make another one out of a like a yellow acrylic but clear clear clear. Acrylic looks really cool and person especially when you get into the thicker stuff. I the the quarter I don't have anything thicker than a quarter inch but the laser cutting it or your Benz or cutting cutting In the video I didn't see Jigsaw Okay here's a secret. Here's the shelf video. We show me cutting out with the Jigsaw. But the one in the here's the final product was cut with the laser. Because it's just I wanted to show that you can cut this with the jigsaw with the right blade but it's so much quicker and easier and precise when you cut it with a laser so

Kevin Scott and Reprogramming the American Dream

"Let's let's jump into the book as you said in your introduction. The title is reprogramming. The American dream the subtitle of the book is from rural America to Silicon Valley. Making a I serve us all and the book is published by Harper Business. It's available now for purchase wherever you buy books one of the first things that we talked about. Really in one of our first discussions was that You know storytelling as you say is a southern thing. Tell me the story of the origin of this book in the story that you wanted to write about. Well I've been part of the development of technology for a really long time and technology itself was the way that I was able to build a life for myself like I think in a whole bunch of ways like it really saved me as a as a kid. It was the thing that I latched onto that help. Give me something productive to do with all of the energy that I had like. I just got really lucky. That personal computing was emerging. Right at the time. That you know is Preteen I was just trying to figure out what to do with myself and I got hooked in it has served as a platform for me for building a career and for doing a whole bunch of things that I think have been helpful to other people in at least some small way is and when I look at the state of technology right now like we have never had a more powerful platform in terms of Technology. So whether it's You know like the set of things that we're using right now to record this podcast. Because we can't be physically proximate with one another. Yeah the amazing networking technology that we have right now. Like computers that let us stay in touch with one another and interact and collaborate. You do really interesting interesting. Things would otherwise be possible but like I have particularly been involved with the development of for the past fifteen years or so so one of the first big projects that I worked on when I left academia to go work in industry was the machine learning thing and I've just sort of watch this technology progress in both power and accessibility and like what I mean in particular by that is power is like what you're able to accomplish with the tools machine learning and accessibility is like who is able to use these tools to create the. It's just been on this incredible curve on both dimensions and I sat down to with you. What is it now? Two and a half years ago when we started this whole process Seems like only yesterday? Yeah it does but you know the thing that I wanted to make sure was that people understood stories of how they could choose to use this technology to help build a better world for themselves and for their communities in this very inclusive way and like I wanted to make sure that there are things about the development of machine learning and its uses that we need to be cautious about but like I want people also feel sort of hopeful about what it is that they can do with these tools. Yeah well the PODCAST is behind the tech and one of the things that I really enjoyed is learning your story. You know from Gladys Virginia to places like Illinois in Europe and in Silicon Valley. So it's a really terrific Story I want to jump into the introduction here and topic on a I in the introduction. You address the question that is on. Everyone's mind which is wind will general artificial general intelligence or Agi. When will it be available win? Will computers the smart is as humans. So I'd like to ask you to read a from the introduction which you address that question okay. Yeah it'd be happy to so even though I have neither the expertise nor the crystal ball to predict exactly when Agi might arrive. I've been involved with modern technology long enough and read enough history to know that we've often underestimated the speed with which futuristic technology suddenly arise. Avon has historically been limited in what it has been able to accomplish by the amount of compute power. We can throw a day our problems and how much time it takes for humans to encode logic and knowledge into Ai Algorithms. We now have enormous amounts of compute power in the cloud and we have enormous databases of digitized human knowledge like Youtube and the kindle bookstore that can be used to train. Ai Systems as their modern. Ai Algorithms absorbed that human intelligence to accomplish your task we imagine for ai powered systems we may achieve what Thomas Kuhn defined as a paradigm shift one which humans will either be in the loop or out which one of these options we reached depends on our actions. Today the story re craft and the principles we assert about what kind of world we want children to live tomorrow. I feel this profound sense of cognitive dissonance. The same thing that can advance humanity can also cause people distress and even harm. This book arises out of a powerful urge outfield to reconcile the two. It is an engineer's tale. Not The musings of philosopher economist or screenwriter as Microsoft chief technology. Do I skin in the game. Of course I do. But also the product of rural America one of the places most vulnerable to the dystopia in story of AI. My values and many of my earliest experiences as a budding engineer occurred in a part of America Rural America. That is most at risk. I left the rural south over two decades ago I for academia and then for Silicon Valley and the tech industry but it by core I am those people rural people and I care about creating future that values them and their resourcefulness. That's great thank you.

"Lock INS nickname for Mitchell. The Great Gladys now adorns a lot of the reprinted versions of her novels. I would has it a guess. That without this blurb Mitchell's work might might have languished unrecognized by major publishers for even longer than it did as an author myself. I know how much store. The publishing industry's sets by good endorsement. And Mitchell got just about the best one there is he is Lee Randall again. Explaining how she reacted when those first guy does Mitchell books landed on her desk and one day out of a puffy envelope tumbled the couple of the vintage reprint and I saw right away that not only were they. classy looking packages But there was a giant puff quote on the top. The BBC made a television series is based on Gladys Mitchell's books in the late nineties called the Mrs Bradley Mysteries With Diana Rigg in the starring role. Although they changed almost everything about the character. I mean can you really imagine rate a former bond girl ever being reptilian. They only made five episodes and focused mostly on making the nineteen twenty setting as glamorous as possible. It's a kind of miss vicious murder mysteries but made fifteen years earlier at the time. That the show Ed only only one of Mitchell's books were still in print available to buy as a paperback. There are a few theories as to why Mrs Bradley didn't enjoy in the way that Miss Marple did part of me wonders if it was the audacity of creating a old ugly really smart female protagonist tagging Bradley Ugliness is stressed in every single book and her age although it remains fixed through all eternity around our grew up and grew older. She's not about fifty seven. I book but she's always described very much as a krone. She's like that that figure from medieval literature. The wise crone. Could you really want to be on the right side of witchcraft often. The supernatural play a really big part in the Mrs Bradley books appearing in titles like Hill is Gloria Mundi. The devitt Saxon wool and when last I died and that's just one of the ways in which she regularly breaks the rules of detective fiction. And as you might expect to someone who wrote getting on one hundred books during her life not all of Mitchell's novels are that good. She freely acknowledged herself telling an interview. Once that I know I've written some bad books but I thought they roll right when I wrote them. I can't bear to look at some of them now. Jason Gould out nine hundred thirty nine printers era and nineteen forties brazen untung as to that. She particularly disliked.

"Philip Larkin matters greatly to the story of Gladys Mitchell's fall and then rise is in the esteem of the reading public. He was an ardent fan of her work. I'm believed her. Books had value not just as detective fiction as novels in their right. I personally don't think that this is a good distinction to make detective. Fiction is fiction too but I recognize that Larkin meant. This is a huge compliment. You get a sense of the depth of his regard for Mitchell's work and for detective fiction. Generally in a review he wrote for The Observer newspaper of her sixty second novel here lies Gloria Mundi. He goes deeply into where this book fits in the Canon of Mitchell's who done it and even references Miss Murchison a character. Tony appears in a significant way in ones as novel strong poison. I think Philip Larkin and I might have got on well. I've linked his whole review in in the show notes for this episode. Because it's well worth reading and Phil but the most significant part for now is the conclusion Lockin says quote. The best thing about the book is that it will send me back to some of the early masterpieces and I shall read them as novels. They ought to be known as such two years. After this review is published Lockin was offered but declined the position of poet laureate the highest honor. Britain has for a living poet and a position that had previously obviously been held by among others. John Beckman Alfred Tennyson and William Wordsworth for a literary figure of lock in stature to so wholeheartedly offer a claim into a detective novelist in her ninth decade. Who is often seen by others? As a relic twee period of crime. Victims past was incredibly significant.

"But for fans of Mitchell and her foremost creation. It's that difference that makes a book so appealing. Well they're so funny. She is so funny she just cracks me up. She's got a you know very caustic wit and I really really appreciate her wit and I appreciate Mrs Bradley's Rather Sarcastic view of the world at the fact that nothing surprised and and I also I happen to. I'm a big fan of the MITFORD's and there's a kind of writing from early in the twentieth century that I know is not. Everyone's tasted very much to mind. It's almost it's almost very brittle. For example. In the beginning of speedy death the characters burst into the clean and they start talking nine to the dozens in that particularly arch now archaic style and I am a sucker for that stuff. I love that this is Lee Randall. A writer based in Scotland and the programmer for Granite Noah Aberdeen's Crime Victim Festival. She came across Gladys Mitchell completely. Not by chance when a package of reprinted novels landed on her desk at newspaper job. I took the books home and They were sort of random sampling. I can't even remember what the first three I read. Were and I felt instantly in love with the language and with Mrs Bradley who I think is most marvelous creation and with Mitchell herself. I became intrigued. And I'm one of those annoying people who want I am intrigued by. There's something I started swotting up on it. Though I which combing the Internet trying to find out about Gladys Mitchell and trying to find out more about the series of books folks and that led me down the detection club wormhole and all sorts of things started bubbling up. I didn't take the edge off the shock. You get from Reading Mrs Bradley for the First Time because you should absolutely try. One feels health behaviors. Small taster of what you could expect from speedy death for instance. I mean that. That book has everything it's A. It's a locked room. Cozy Crime Country House mystery with transvestite ISM and men NYMPHOMANIAC and psychological shadows and light and then rousing courtroom scene at the end. It's got every single single thing it could possibly have and the book and it's so brazen i. I loved it. Mitchell tackled topics in books that most other golden age novelists avoided completely. Yeah they're not cozy in the slightest all sorts of things go on and she also the other person. I often compare her to collect. Because sometimes when I'm Reading Colette I have to put the book down and turn to the copyright page and say how this book book fields so fresh modern talking about subject matter that we forget that that sex was not invented. Nine hundred and sixty people have always been smart and savvy and perverted and weird and intricate always always always and Gladys Mitchell. Just put it all out there. On the page Mitchell's work was popular during Hallow- lifetime. She died in nineteen ninety-three three at the age of eighty two and she was an early member of the detection club. How a 'Flipped Palate' Affects a Racing Horse

"Nick Zito sent out Kentucky. Derby runner-up is box in the Belmont stakes. After having won the Florida Derby icebox went off as the three to one favorite in the test of the champion. But he finished ninth after the race. Zito said that icebox had flipped his Palette which caused his dull finish. So what does that mean. Take the tip of your tongue and tickle the back of your mouth make sure due to keep that soft tissue back. They're soft don't stiff in your throat. Okay that soft tissue. You're feeling with your tongue. Is Your soft oft pallet with race. Horses that soft palate can flip up and sit. On top of the EPA Gladys the EPA gladys is the little flap of skin skin in the back of your throat. That makes sure you don't swallow food down your windpipe or breathe into your stomach instead of your lungs. So when the soft palate sits it's on that EPA gladys the airway is partially obstructed. And the Horse isn't getting all the fuel it needs now. Typically the cure for a flipped pallet. Hallett is a minor surgical procedure to lift the Palette. So it doesn't flip up. It sounds relatively simple and in theory the horse should return to form thereafter rafter. But in the case of icebox after that throat surgery he finished off the board in the Haskell travers and the Monmouth Cup in fact icebox never won another race and finished in the top three in one allowance race over the next year and a half his final start. Art was an eleventh in the two thousand Eleven Breeders Cup classic. So here's the question. Is there a little more to it when a horse flips. It's pallet. It seems that that some researchers at Cornell University have been investigating that very question and one of those investigators. Dr Norm Ducharme joins us here on the gate with some surprising results. It's alternate and one of those investigators. Dr Jonathan Chatham joins us here on the gate with some surprising results. Alternate Ed and one of those investigators. Dr Martin Bucer. Coney joins US here on the gate with some surprising results. Your colleagues and you have spent a great deal of time researching researching what causes the soft palate to be displaced. What have you found so we found that in the earlier about historically shortly? We used to think that I was always the pallets fault that something was wrong with the pallid itself and that's led to a lot of treatment targeting the pallet but we found that it's the position of the larynx voice box that stabilizes the upper airway horses that exercise. This is and this is Pacific to race horses or horses that do more than just trotting any horse. Galloping race of the our study was focus on them as horses and we found that one specific muscle and they could be others as well. Just one that there's more studies on fatigues a few seconds before the Horse Displaces Palate is upper airway become loose quote unquote. And then the polit spices. The Racehorse In the second career often can become a sport horse and being the same greed so but if you relate into other functions that complained and many of the sport anymore says on a horse that this thing is talent is the normal noise. He's so the displacement of palate causes an obstruction to the airflow but unless the horse needs maximum airflow flow capacity the obstruction does not interfere or is unlikely to interfere with the performance of the Horse. But the horse the second thing that a pal how displacement does in the vast majority of horses as it creates an abnormal up arrest story noise often referred to as snoring or gurgling really. It's the same structure that people that snore vibration of the palate and horses is that displays the Palette of vibration of Palate as well and have normal noise affects the perception of judge. This writer in in the sports world. Can you please explain what the common surgical procedure is. How does the Pallet get lifted up? It's the airflow during excellence. And that lifts the Palette and causing obstruction during excavation and that's opposed to most other obstruction in the worst is anyway which happens during installation so during acceleration wants to the boys boxes below the Palette. The Palette is like Cassandra or spinnaker in an airflow get caught and the airflow and and lifts it up and vibrates just like you and I. We were snoring. The that's probably the proper metaphor accepting happens while racing or galloping horses now if the issue is muscle fatigue in the soft palate is that indicative negative of General Muscle Fatigue in the Horse in other words is the horse just destined not to run that fast no there. It's and then muscle fatigue in the muscles that controlled the position of voice box. We don't know that the soft palate actually fatigues south excellent. Maybe a an innocent bystander in that area were too soft pilots natural strength and fatigue May may not be able to prevent displacement. When it's an in nonsense illogical position meaning it sticking stuck on the air flow in the middle of the airflow but to come back to the fatigue? So so we've and this paper here that we're referring discovering muscles. Fatigue is is the likely cause of displacement and most forces right forces that is but they sit in their first. I'll answer question to through faith. The first question is is the muscle the horse just fatigue and this is just one of many muscles that are fatigue and and the answer is it's no. This seems to be specific to the muscle that controls the upper airways not the entire worse. There's different type above muscle their arrest story muscle which are meant to function all the time. And there's muscle us When the horses are galloping the skeletal muscle and the training of horses is focused on training them to be able to compete athletically? Let it quickly really focusing on their cardiovascular fitness as well as their skeletal muscle fitness. But we're not sure that the upper for airway current training at that are optimized for the upper airways voices and they might not be optimized optimizing for this group of forces that are predisposed to it because they have the wrong muscle fiber

Vaping May Be Worse for Heart Health Than Tobacco Cigarettes, New Study Finds

"In the wake of recent reports of fatal lung illnesses connected with the use of E. cigarettes new research seems to confirm concerns about the health impacts of vaping Gladys has that story a study by Boston University researchers found that E. cigarettes altered cholesterol levels and doctor Florian rodder with the Senate heart institute at cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles says his group's research suggests that vaping may be more harmful to heart health than traditional cigarettes I know how it's going to be at to the evidence that he figured smoking may not be quite as healthy as being portrayed and I think this reason enough for now to be at least cautious rodder compared the blood flow of ten non smokers ten tobacco cigarette smokers and ten E. cigarette users testing blood flows at rest and while squeezing a handgrip only E. cigarette user showed signs of coronary vascular dysfunction even when they were not exerting themselves physically industry groups have previously argued that vaping is a healthy alternative to traditional cigarettes especially for people trying to kick their smoking habit commercials for E. cigarettes to warn about the health risks of nicotine but Roger says marketing efforts still portray vaping as a healthy alternative he believes in addition to nicotine a number of manufactured products used to form vapors are likely causing the most harm and honestly most doctors or the medical community in general probably would have agreed to a few years ago saying that guarantee cigarette sound like the healthy alternatives but now there's just the more and more evidence mounting a recent study by the food and drug administration found that a quarter of all high school students use the cigarettes in two thousand nineteen up five percentage points from last year Roger notes his group's initial research and limited trial size could benefit from further studies and testing health impacts over time to determine the true impacts of vaping on public health for public news service I America

"This might for a uncomfortable question time in parliament yesterday when they really started to push what's the point library really tried to go on the attack here in the Senate and in the House and really point here is that she may not be fit and proper person to sit in parliament so that was more or less the line of argument that was was put especially to the prime minister by the shadow Attorney General Mark Dreyfuss. Thank you speak my question his to the prime minister. What steps did the prime minister take to ensure that the member for Chisholm is a fit and proper person to sit in the Australian parliament now now unfortunately for Mr Dreyfuss? Most of these questions were ruled out of order by the speaker. China's SNP question is out of order and the reason for that is that you can really only asking question time questions related directly to the minister or the prime minister's. Portfolio Day was on the one question in in these line of questions that he did answer and that was when Mr Dreyfuss read to the prime minister quite regarding former Labor Senate to SAM now. It'd be the background there. He was was forced out of the federal parliament as senator when he contradicted the Labor Party's position on the South China Sea and it was revealed at the time that he had taken money from Hong Sean Murphy who people may know is the Chinese billionaire who has since had his visa revoked on is zero advice about he's connections to the Chinese government so the drivers put that to the Prime Minister Scott Morrison Scott Morrison and asked him whether he would prepare to apply the same standard to gladys Louis Scott Morrison again again referred to Miss Lewis statement saying that she you know she basically got no words wrong in the sky and to be Christian member to the statement issued by the middle of that she died which makes it very clear the support for the government's position and that's what she'd and then went on the attack so far as former former senator went and say he should have resigned indeed resign so that's where it ended up any attempt at a follow up on from Lebron the answer there from the prime minister was made with a sorry that's out of order by the Speaker and we heard no more on that Meta from the Prime Minister so in that statement they gladys lopate yesterday. She says she's passionately committed to serving the people of Chisolm. A suggestion to the contrary is deeply offensive so all this is a bit of a headache for the government right now and we wanted to know what the political consequences might be. There's a strong possibility of course that Gladys Li retains the city parliament retains the competence of the Prime Minister resigned competence of her party in fact that way we see now that he's the most likely outcome I would say barring of course further pressure on the prime minister and really the only mechanism here is how much damage damage. She seemed to be doing to the government important to note here that the government only has a two seat majority the last thing it wants to do you would regime guy to a by election in his seat of cheese. Society just won the election so there is a strong motivation and for the government to resist all attempts at at at having leave parliament and in reality probably the only real realistic way that not that would happen if enough pressure is applied from the opposition and from outside the parliamentary ranks themselves in regards to these associations and and now that she's releasing these statements supporting the government's position on the South China Sea that certainly does take a beat of the esteem a beat of the sting out of these attacks.

"This is ABC podcast. I can tell you that I can recall Eve as reported that from two thousand and three to two thousand fifteen twelve years long that you've icon recall. I can't be an active member of that council. Can I liberal backbencher. Gladys loose said she couldn't recall if she was a member of an organization that has links to China's government less than twenty four hours. After that interview she said did actually she was Australia's first chinese-born. MP has been copying a lot of questions about her past and the answers of led to well even even more questions. I'm Angela and I'm Stephen Stockwell down the signal. WHO IS GLADYS LOU. What are the groups that she's been linked to. And what does it mean the government so who is gladys lou well on one level. We should all be celebrating the election of Gladys Lou to the federal parliament. She's the first female Chinese bone she's born in. Hong Kong actually member of parliament quite quite quite an achievement. I guess the issue though is that along with that historic achievement there are some questions about her associations associations with certain China linked organizations is probably the best way to put it. Tommy golden is a political reporter for the ABC Basie and he's been working on this story the months it's about the liberal backbencher lettuce. Lou She represents the seat of Chisholm it seen Ed the INA let me think east of Melbourne next door actually to the young which is the Treasurer Josh fraud and big data right in that really marginal seat area of of that sort of middle ring of seats in in Melbourne. Where does she sit inside the Liberal Party will this actually is a very central question edge because she is a fund rising star for the Liberal Party has being prior to her election to parliament. It never hurts. If you can show you can bring in the money then we'll give you a leg up up inside the party in terms of getting support around you for a candidacy she she started expressing an interesting candidacy many many years before she was at she was made a candidate. What are these groups that you mentioned that gladys. Lou is associated with a was well this quad what a number but I guess the one that we hear the IDC have revealed this week. is the most concerning and that is she was a council member on according to our information which is derived from Chinese government records that that we were given access to that. She was a council member owned of two provincial chapters as provinces. This is being Guandong province adjacent to Hong Kong and another promise called Shandong in China as East provincial chapters of the China Overseas Exchange Association. I should now at the relevant time given that these association with Gladys Louis to that association seems to have gone forever addict to about Twenty fifteen it was reporting reporting directly was part of the State Council now. The State Council is very very important organization in the Chinese government. He Disease Central Administrative Body Eddie within the Chinese government is the central political body within the Chinese government is extremely powerful and to have that connection to these organization is he's going to obviously raise concerns now initially when we put when I put these questions to gladys Lou about her membership of the councils of these two organizations she denied having any relationship with them now yesterday she reversed that position she now admits that she was was at least a member of the Guangdong chapter so that is quite a shifting position from her on that she had pretty disastrous interview on Sky TV this week where she said she couldn't recall. She said she never was then. She said she might have been but someone else put a name on it not recall membership of twelve years. I mean we've just shown your nine listed there. I've got another document can show you of your name. Listen and the other sociation Associations Association lasting twelve years and you can't recall it well. I can tell you that I have never been a member of this council and it can happen they can put your name there without your knowledge the more telling part really and certainly the more concerning pot so far as the Labor Party opposition is concerned is her failure to answer questions about that South China Sea issue she that I mentioned now the Sky Heist Andrew Ball put to her three or four times. The Hague has ruled China's actions as unlawful as illegal. Do you agree essentially with that yes or no and at no stage was she is able to to articulate that she did agree with that decision. My understanding is a lot of countries these trying to claim ownership sovereignty of the South China Sea because all for various raisins and my position is with the goal of saving government cannot just he said that you support the strain positions the government's position that the fifth of the South China Sea by China is unlawful. Is it unlawful use when a well as the state. I want to make sure that Australians INSA interests were put I and follows so like Tom said since that interview. Gladys Lou has put a statement clarifying her position on the South China. Let's say although that hasn't stopped people commenting on the way the interview went in the first place right as for the group's China Overseas Exchange Association World Trade United Foundation attention then I tell us less than nothing about what they do how they work and exactly how they fit in with the Chinese government so we called someone who knows so we'll we'll just start with your full name title. If you don't mind Clive Hamilton Fisher public ethics at Chester University in Cambra Ambra and something of an expert on China and or through solids invasion China influencing yes of course so clubs has been looking into these connections actions and how some of these groups reach up into the Chinese government well. It's probably best to start at the top which is the Chinese companies party's Political Bureau and it manages ages are a number of departments within the Party some very big carry out functions for the past. The one of them is called a united front work elect department very big structure bureaucracy topped up by Zhang Ping carry out among other things overseas influence and propaganda work nick and one of the organizations under the United Front Work Department is called overseas Chinese Affairs says the title suggests is to Manage Handy Jn God overseas Chinese as referred to the China Overseas Exchange Association is one of the agencies of the obviously Chinese Affairs Office office right now. There's a hierarchy of agencies and and the Exchange Association has various provincial offices including what in Guangdong it just north of Hong Kong and that's the one the Guangdong Overseas Exchange Association and this organization has an explicit purpose of coopting coopting and mobilizing overseas China's in countries like straight to carry out influence activities within the ASS bre era but more particularly outside in the mainstream by a developing political linkages by attacking opportunities to spread Abidjan's message so anyone who is a council member of Guangdong Overseas Exchange Association. He's trusted by the Communist Patty Auty as someone who sees the world as I do and will act in the interests of the Party so the NBC revealed Chinese Government Records Woods indicating that gladys loop was a member of two provincial chapters of the Chinese Overseas Exchange Association between two thousand and three and fifteen right and China would argue that these groups have a much more innocent purpose than what clydes describing bringing Chinese people together encouraging business relationship SPEC thing but in any case gladys Louis with only elected to parliament a few months ago she has put out a statement saying that she has resigned from these organizations or head previously really was assigned and you know there's another element kind of context in which not happening from around two thousand five the Communist. Hoti according to potty documents launched a new policy niners conjuncture which literally means ethnic Chinese on AIDS participation in politics and the Patty decided that they would pick out encourage might groom trusted people in China's diasporas around the world to become active in mainstream politics and so we've seen in places like Canada New Zealand Tequila also in the United Kingdom and other nations by increasingly Australia at like government state government and and now federal government level people whom the Communist Party across fields will represent them encouraged promoted and and possibly supported directly to injury into politics and gun positions of influence and is is there any evidence that Ah Gladys leary was one such person. No there is no evidence are also at among the potential that gladys his name was just kind of throwing up was nominated without knowing would have to take an active role to to find under selfish those positions. I have to say it stretches credulity for me for her to say that the twelve years she was a member of the Council of it was very important Communist Party over house action. She was unaware of it but they put on nine out without asking her Each state did two things can be grown on from that one is she was extraordinary lacks in in understanding damning and trying to deal with us at least a year ago question for raised in public about Athletics Cues Association with the Chinese Communist Party link organizations and and she apparently didn't do anything about the second thing is that she were placed on the council Paul Taste to organizations in China without her knowledge got it could nevertheless suggest quite strongly that the communist Communist Party in Beijing. I regarded gladys says I trusted ally. Someone who shares the world view and could be relied upon to the Chinese government's interests in Australia.

She got her big break was nineteen fifty two. Gladys wanna talent competition on the TV show. The Ted Mack original amateur hour think of it as the star search or American idol of its day at that time, it was momentous for a young black girl to win a televised competition, but that was just a hint of what was to come. Gladys has built an incredible career based on a perfect land of unmatchable talent and the love of her family. They have always had her back. Everybody has a story. And there's something to be learned from every experience. Use your life as a class. This is master class with Gladys Knight. You remember star search? That's what the Ted Mack. Original amateur hour was just like they do American idol today. They have people that houses of people land up. You not just a get inside the door and say, would you listen to me when I was seven my mom, my auntie sent them a tape and right away. They said, yes. But that was a tough time in society because segregation was rapid. I mean, we even taught how we were supposed to act in certain spaces around certain people. That's just the way that it was. It was hurtful it was ugly. It was nasty. It was unfair. It was all of those things, and you could allow your spirit to die because of it. But our parents taught us how to survive in those arenas. So when I got to go to Ted Mack original amateur hour that was a different arena. I was the only African American on the show. And when I won they brought the trophy in that I had won the trophy was bigger than I was. And so they ask some of the other contestants just for picture if they will come and stand with me and just helped me hold the trophy one or two of them, you know, and their parents that right on the side and looked at me and said, absolutely not. I didn't think anything about it. You know? I just wasn't like that. Okay. You don't wanna hold it. That's okay. And Mr. Matt came in a have to give it to him. You know, sometimes the lead person in any situation can set the pace best who Mr. MAC was he was the nicest the most carry the most fun individual. I couldn't ask for a better program because of him to be a part of. And if you see a picture of me with that trophy. It's with him. He heard about it. He came down, and he stood with me and helped me hold the trophy. And my mom was standing outside the door. And when I came out she said, well, come on baby said, we have to go now 'cause they were getting ready to have a party in there. She but don't worry about that. She said we're having a party for you down in the limo. 'cause my my cousin owned a limo. And she said we. We're so proud of you. We did saw just took me right out of that. And then that may dwell into that whole ugly situation. My mom never taught us color in in a sense. You know, she never taught us those bad people. Those are this that are the other, you know, just taught us circumstances. Sometimes so we didn't grow up hating people or dislike and people still young. And I just didn't think about it. And I'm still like that today, if you wanna be like that or you feel like, you know, I don't deserve certain things. I don't measure up to you. That's on you. I know who I am. I know what a deserve. And what I do. And know what I give. And all I wanna do is do it like the Lord would have me do it. He said love everybody. Even if they're not nice. So that's the way I been for most of my life in it could have been a beer hurtful thing to me. But it wasn't because of the way. That I was brought up. You always go have somebody trying to pull you in the wrong direction, and your spirit has to be strong enough to say, no, thank you in my growing up. We will always about friends and family and community. And it was Baba's birthday my brother. So I got together with my friends. And I said, hey, I don't we have a little party at the house. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey DLC to be tweaked after forced romance backlash

"Ooh. Yeah. The decision ominous asan's creed odyssey for glad media award in the new outstanding video game category was a difficult. One in the wake of controversy regarding its recent downloadable content. Its presence here will surely raise eyebrows. We understand those concerns in wish to address them directly one assassin's. Creed odyssey won't in October twenty eighteen it quickly became a hit with the LGBTQ community as the first role playing game and its long running franchise odyssey gave players unprecedent control over their character and story, including the ability to form same sex romantic relationships. LGBTQ identities were an intrinsic part of the game's world set in fictional, ancient Greece, and for many players Cassandra Helio and Alexis became beloved examples of authentic LGBTQ representation. This all changed with the DLC episode released last week legacy of the first blade shadow heritage in which a storyline. Unavoidably places Cassandra slash Alexi goes into a heterosexual relationship at worst. This sends the. The harmful message, the sexual orientation can be changed at will. And that LGBTQ people can choose to conform to hetero normative expectations in spite of their identities to be clear this nomination should not be taken as an endorsement of the deal seat. Ubisoft has publicly apologized for the for the acknowledgement steak instance last week Gladys men and direct contact with saw in an effort to work together. Improve aspects of this deal seen future content releases the forthcoming updates the shadow heritage nets by just yesterday are positive step. And we applaud them for working to mitigate the damage. Let's while we're drilling into this statement off of one story drill into another story with another statement. So what happened if you remember when we were talking about this last week shadow airdrop episode to the deal as they've said here, you get put into a heterosexual relationship at the end, the idea being you need to further the bloodline that way, they can keep the continuity of assassin's creed going, they would've out people are acting like that's not cool. That's totally against what you said. We could do with the character and the character Bill and somebody who built my. Freedom of the entire game. The exactly very weird thing to use off said, you know, what you're right sorry. We were heads down. We didn't make we didn't think this through. We're going to in the next episode three put in a choice that and dialogue that lets you get out of it. And let it makes bulb on crafted that way, right that however has already been changed because the idea was that we can't we can't do anything. So to we're going to do some of three yesterday after we went off the air. We saw this statement after hearing player feedback in Cussing within the development team. We are making changes to a cut scene and some dialogue in shadow heritage to better reflect the nature of the relationship for player selecting a non-romantic storyline. These changes along with renaming trophy slash achievement are being made now and we'll be implemented upcoming patch. We've also been carefully looking at the next episode bloodline to ensure the paths that players experience mirror. The choices. They make in the game. So to be clear bloodlines bloodline episode three shadow heritage is number. Two they were going to screw stuff. Screw chain stuff in bloodline to reflect the reaction to two. But now because reactions been loud enough amd because they worked with glad they're actually going back and fixing episode to patching out to change it all so I think that's a better choice in the end.
