"As well as Mike Hager at the Robert Morris Circle. level. Thanks also to John mcinnis for his support via paypal. I also wanted to know with sorrow the passing of Bernard, Belan a couple of weeks ago. Dr Belan was a noted history author who has a long string of books written over sixty years. I've used many of them in writing this podcast. He was a history professor at Harvard for many decades and won numerous awards. Even though he lived a good long life passing at age ninety seven, he was still producing books as recently as five years ago. He contributed so much to study of this era and I just thought I should note his passing. This week, we heard the battle of Germantown as the continentals attempt to hit British occupied. PHILADELPHIA? The battle at Germantown was one of many of what I would call successful losses for the Americans. The British held off the attacks for reasons I covered in the main show but failed to do anything about the continental remaining in the field. More importantly, the attack was a key event for the French. The British capture of Philadelphia caused some in France to fear that the British might be able to wrap up the war despite the loss at Saratoga. The attack at Germantown made clear to the French Shantou the rest of the world that Washington did not consider himself to be a defeated general and that he would continue to fight. This is actually what the French wanted. They were in no hurry for American victory. Any more than they wanted a British victory rather they wanted Britain entangled in an American quagmire while France attempted to recapture colonies in other parts of the world. Germantown made clear to France that the fight would go on between Britain and her colonies, and that's exactly what France wanted to see happen. There is a fun story about after the battle. The continentals found a small dog, a Fox terrier. It had a tag on it indicating that its owner was none other than general. William. How Washington returned the dog to British lines under a flag of truce. It's a nice story about an act of kindness between two men who were at war. There's even a whole book written about the incident called General House Dog, which uses the incident to look into the personalities of generals. How in Washington? You can find that book by Caroline, tigger on my blog for this episode but that's not my book recommendation of the week..

"A British cannonball struck Nash in the hip while riding his horse. The same ball that injured him also killed his aide Major James. Witherspoon. The son of a signer of the declaration. General Nash was carried from the field, but his wounds proved mortal and he died a few days later. The British also lost a general that day about the same time as Cornwallis as divisions pushed on the American retreat in American sniper shot British General James. Agnew. Who fell from his horse and died. I've talked about the main divisions that fought Germantown. But remember General Washington had also sent to other divisions one to march around the British left and the other to march around the British right in order to attack from behind. General Armstrong's Pennsylvania. Militia were assigned to attack the British left. They ran into a group of Hessian yeager ze near a Hicken Creek. The hashes pulled back across the bridge. Instead of charging them no the militia just brought up their cannons and fired from a distance. When the Heche charge back across the bridge toward the militia, the militia pulled back even further and ended up retreating from the battle. General smallwoods, Maryland, and new. Jersey militia had been assigned to attack from behind the British right. Now they had the farthest to march of any soldiers and they took so long to get into position that the battle was over before they made it their. Small would join the continental retreat without really engaging the enemy. Overall, for the battle, the British suffered about seventy, killed and four, hundred and fifty wounded. The Americans lost about one, hundred, fifty killed and over five hundred wounded plus the nearly four hundred fifty that were captured mostly from the ninth, Virginia. The attack Germantown showed that the Americans were still ready to fight even after the loss of Philadelphia. But beyond that, they accomplished little else. The continental army pulled back about a day's march from the British encampment. Jeremy Town. Washington established a headquarters at White Marsh while his army nursed its wounds and planned what to do next. They would remain there until December when they would eventually pullback into winter quarters at Valley Forge. The British remained in possession of Philadelphia and Germantown for the next few weeks. General Hal then decided to abandon Jeremy Town pulling all of US forces into entrenchments closer to Philadelphia. It was there that the British and Hessian settled into their winter quarters Some military analysts argue that the battle of Germantown very easily could have been American victory had Washington, not got hung up on the Chew House and instead at taken most of Sullivan's division forward to meet up with Greene's division. Many, also blame the bad luck of the fog causing confusion on the battlefield. Others argue that Washington drawing up such a complex plan of attack that required for too much coordinated action without communication was doomed to fail. I think much of this comes with the benefit of hindsight. continentals did not get the victory for which they had hoped, but they were able to retreat with most of their army intact and prepare to fight another day. Next week, British General Clinton, which is in New York City ventures north to see if he can help with Burgoyne army, which is by this time getting into some really serious trouble. "British Colonel Thomas Must Grave of the fortieth regiment of regulars commanded the defense against Conway's attack. Both sides poured in reinforcements. Anthony. Wayne's continentals reportedly fought viciously and shouted remember Paoli as they ruthlessly cut down the enemy even men trying to surrender. General Hal personally rush toward the sound of gunfire confronting his retreating soldiers. E ordered the men to form and told them that it was just a scouting party. About the same time he said that an American cannon hit the tree under which how was sitting atop his horse making clear that this was no scouting party. At Sunrise, a dense fog remained over the battlefield preventing Bo. From determining where anyone was and leading to great confusion. As must graves regulars fell back against the much larger attacking continental force he ordered six of his companies to take shelter inside a large stone house owned by Pennsylvania Chief Justice Benjamin Chew. As the rest of the British line retreated the British inside the Chew House became isolated. Initially several of Washington's officers proposed leaving one regiment to keep the defenders of the Chew House from moving and continuing on with the main attack. General, Knox however objected. He thought it was an error to leave a force in their rear. He proposed taking the house before moving on and Washington agreed. The American sent an officer under a flag of truce to demand surrender of the home's occupants. The burnish defenders fired on the officer and killed him. Next Knox brought up several field cannons that could smash the doors and windows, but we're not big enough to penetrate the thick stone walls of the house. The Americans charged the house but were shot down. A few did make it to the housing got inside but were quickly cut down by the defenders. During the assault. Washington's aide Lieutenant, Colonel John Lawrence the son of Continental Congress delegate Henry Laurens was wounded. Another officer John Marshall, the future chief justice who had received a minor wound at brandy wine. A serious one in the assault on the Chew House. The attempt to take the house went on for over an hour. More American regiments drawn by the sound of gunfire march toward the house. General Adam Stephen who was the advance of General Greene's main column marched his battalion over to the House as well. General Greene's main column of continentals was behind schedule and had not yet reached.

"Lou Thank you for joining the American Revolution. Today episode one, sixty, three, the battle of Germantown. Two weeks ago general entered. PHILADELPHIA CAPPING A months-long campaign that began in New York. Then down to Maryland than overland March to Philadelphia. How had outmaneuvered Washington's army and taken the city without any real last stand after defeating the continentals at brandy wine. Now, we moved away last week where we caught up with what was going on with Burgoyne Army in New York during this same time. So today, we're going back to Philadelphia to see Washington's response to house capture of the city. Although the British general had reached his goal he had left General Burgoyne swinging in the wind without any support in upstate New York. But that was not a primary concern to general how of primary concern was the fact that he still had not opened up the Delaware River meaning his invading army could not link up with the navy and reconnect with outside supply. Lines. General Hal left the bulk of his army in Germantown. Today Germantown is part of Philadelphia, however in seventeen seventy seven when the northern border of Philadelphia was Vine Street in what is today center city Germantown was still several miles north of the city. As, you might discern from name it was settled by emigrants from the Palatine region in what is today southwestern Germany. By seventeen seventy seven the Germans had lived in the area for several generations but still spoke the German language rather than English. Most of the German people who came to Pennsylvania were members of pacifist groups who had fled the nearly continual state of warfare that defined much of Europe at this time. They had no particular affinity for the militaristic Henson's who were fighting with the British. At the same time though as pacifists most did not join the armed opposition of the Patriot, movement either. Some had fled the area in advance of the army's occupation. However many more stayed put and tried to make the best of life under military occupation. General Hal with General Cornwallis went to Philadelphia with nearly half the army. How would end up occupying a house on market street which had once been the residents of Lieutenant? Governor. Richard. Pen and most recently that of Pennsylvania's General John cadwalader living there before the British occupied the city. However at this point, how maintained a headquarters at the home of James Logan well north of Philadelphia at about a mile south of Germantown. A House first order of business was to open up the Delaware. River. So he could reconnect with the British navy and the outside world. He had to deploy a brigade of three thousand soldiers to March all the way back to head of elk Maryland and escort more supplies back to Philadelphia overland because the Patriots still controlled the Delaware River. He also had to prepare for an attack by the continentals which expected because most likely from the north at Germantown. In Philadelphia, how made attempts to prevent looting or plundering by British soldiers. He still wanted to win over the locals and be accepted as a liberator, not a conqueror. How needed to establish local support so that he could at some point, move his regular army onto other cities in north, America. Almost as soon as how marsh into Philadelphia Washington was planning to attack..

Pressure builds on Pompeo as impeachment inquiry charges ahead
"Secretary of state Mike Pompeii is in Germany to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall Germany of course being far away from the impeachment inquiry on Capitol Hill which is probably just fine with the secretary who has tried to avoid the spotlight in the impeachment drama nevertheless career diplomats have been testifying and Pompeii does not come across very well in those depositions as NPR's Michele Kelemen reports Mike Pompeii says he walk down memory lane today visiting a Germantown where he served in the U. S. army during the Cold War following him though are many questions about US policy toward the former Soviet Republic of Ukraine at issue is whether the administration delayed security assistance this summer in order to get the Ukrainians to open investigations that are of personal interest to trump what happened in Washington this year was that we provided two hundred and fifty million dollars worth of security systems defense assistance than a hundred and forty million dollars or so of additional security systems just like happened in fiscal year eighteen and fiscal year seventeen he didn't comment on the delay in that aid or the reasons behind it nor did he answer a question about the ambassador he recalled from Ukraine earlier this year Maria von of it too is facing a series of false allegations spread in part by trump's lawyer Rudy guiliani she's testified that she was told she did nothing wrong but that the secretary could no longer protect her from home Pompey was asked at that press conference with Germany's foreign minister you can see the media in Washington suffix and a lot of things that you and I didn't spend any time talking about today house committees have released hundreds of pages of closed door testimony ahead of next week's public hearings one longtime diplomat Mike McKinley said in his deposition that he tried several times to get Pompeii to put out a statement of support for your bondage in late two September and after reading that trump colder bad news and a phone call with Ukraine's president Pompeii would only say that McKinley didn't raise concerns when you've on of its was first withdrawn from Ukraine in may when that took place he didn't say anything to me McKinley quit before testifying about his contacts with Pompey on this in another deposition the current acting ambassador bill Taylor described the cable he sent upon pale raising concerns about what he called the folly of withholding security assistance to Ukraine at a time when Russia was watching he didn't get a response though he heard that the secretary brought those concerns to the White House the White House is called those who have testified radical unelected bureaucrats a former ambassador to Ukraine Stephen Piper's says many are frustrated that Pompey has not stood up for diplomats who are carrying out US policy nor has he distanced himself from trump's private lawyer who is pushing the president's personal agenda I think he's done a lot of damage in the last five or six months by his silence on for example what happened to investor Ivanovic and then the recent criticism leveled at his officers and it creates the impression that you know his audience is really one person is sitting at sixteen hundred Pennsylvania Avenue that sentiment is echoed by Alexander Vershbow a three time U. S. ambassador and former deputy secretary general of NATO secretary Pompeii this clearly made a calculated decision to stand with president trump and possibly support the White House smear campaign against state department officials who have chosen to uphold their oath of office those who have testified do so under subpoena without public support from palm pale but he didn't today that help might be on the way at least to cover part of their mounting legal fees Michele Kelemen NPR news the state
Ban of "thin blue line" flag in Maryland sparks uproar
"Morning to you have you ever seen the typically black and white American flag with one single color line replacing one of the white lines it's a blue line it's a blue line and this it does this for for often as the thin blue line flag or thin blue line American flag and is meant to symbolize the police officers who serve as that seen blue line between order and chaos right so we have our police departments to rely on across the country are public servants who are helping to keep us safe keep the peace and do you have to do a job that imperils them potentially on any given day as we see far too many headlines of cops who were killed in the line of duty just doing routine things routine stops and all of a sudden losing their life in the process so there are people who honor them by of course flying the flag that Finn blueline flag they want to support them and in fact there was a nation wide woodworking effort to support the cops that was supposed to be on national first responders day which is October twenty eighth since come and gone so there was a call from a craftsman in Chicago to produce these thin blue line flags out of wood to deliver them to cops in every state all right here in Montgomery County Maryland there was a local one worker who answered the call his name is James Shelton and last week Monday that Germantown resident James Shelton and his son forest built they had built an American flag of what an American flag two of them actually one they put this blue line on and they brought it to the fifth district police station in Germantown W. jail as Kevin Lewis reports on this Kevin will be joining us this morning by the way eight thirty five to talk about this story they bring it to the cops they also bring one to the fire department is gonna thin red line on that one that's a fire station thirty one that's along d'armes town road in north Potomac so the cops are proud of it on Monday they get in by Wednesday they've posted a photo on social media Facebook and Twitter that show Shelton his son far as and I and three police officers all standing in front of the flag opposing they got a great photo and in fact the items the photo says on social media that they want to thank James Shelton who presented Montgomery County fifth district officers with a wooden American flag that he made and recognition of national first responders day they're proud of it they said the flag will be displayed in the fifth district station I gonna hang this line well that's when all the trouble started not long after people on social media started getting very upset about it upset about it somebody posting on Twitter that say blue lives matter flag they said it's racist and dangerous take it down now racist and dangerous to say the boy watch matter no disrespect to the citizens who were trying to show appreciation for their local police writes one social media user Monica Goldberg but boy lives matter is a racist response to black lives matter does not belong in a county facility take it down and the messages continue from there which leads us to our esteemed local leader mark outrage Montgomery County executive who constantly finds himself on the wrong end of important decisions and in this case he's done it yet again mark L. rich the Montgomery County executive said this on Friday evening quote the flag provides a symbol of support to some but it is a symbol of dismissive next to others because it is divisive the flag will not be posted at the fifth district nor any public space within the police department under my administration we are committed to improving police relations with the community and will immediately address any action that stands against our mission mark our actual weighing in saying remove it the bull fen blueline flag needs to go what's your message to mark hours this morning eight eight eight six three zero nine six two five eight eight eight six three zero W. I. L. L. first will he says is then it will he will immediately address any actually stands against our mission what your mission which mission is this against that's my first question but you keep calling it the thin blue line flag that is it is even in the thin blue line shop they call it the blue lives matter flag okay and so I think that's the problem people have with that that it should black lives matter started it should be anything that is not black lives matter if you say all lives matter if you say blue lives matter anything along those lines you you are your appropriating they're saying you're somehow diminishing black lives that's how they see it and and the the thing about this too is does she look like this is this is this is ray says to does not belong in a county facility take it down this is why I'm afraid to call the police and emergency because I'm afraid you'll hurt black people in my neighborhood the left is done a phenomenal job in again making making victims of people because they bestow victim hood on your so they have made anyone who is African American anyone with black skin is is a victim why because you are immediately on on the wrong side of the law number one they just assume that number one number two they assume that anyone wearing a uniform is an oppressor and therefore by you being black you are a victim automatically and so that has been so deeply ingrained that we have a very anti cop culture right now and this is happening all I think in the last ten years but but it is part of the left's quest to places all in groups and to divide because if you can get law enforcement fighting against on African Americans or African Americans fighting against black oppressor and oppressed you know and victim if you can make all white people Vic oppressors and anyone of color a victim you've done your job if you can put you know all Muslims are oppressed an and Christians are oppressors it all of those things have and have nots that's what they do because of your fighting each other you're not paying attention with the government is doing you're not paying attention what they're doing and ultimately they fly to the rescue and say all health care you can't afford to go to the doctor will fix that and they fix it so poorly they know that you're going to say this is terrible please fix it again for us we ask the government to fix the problems that they have purposely created and that's what's happening here that's what that's how I see this I see this as a presser verses victim that have been created by the last and that's why you can't have this because it offends somebody and now if witnesses before they do offend you too bad you're intolerant right well and of course that that oppressor victim arrangement will be artificially continued yes until powers obtained and exactly so so yet to to basically make flat assumptions that black people don't care about the lives of cops that's the position the mark our just taking I am and I don't think anybody I mean don't don't don't we all agree that we do need policing is not a sin shouldn't that just be a basic agreement but apparently it's not there's some division and because black lives matter and blue lives matter those things are not mutually exclusive those things can be true at the same time and they are this goes back to when people were saying don't say all lives matter it's offensive what it should be true it should be true yeah it's a matter of debate you're just a racist and involve and as I don't have time to address all these girls attacks but you talked about the relationship between cops in the community the the Obama presidency why this show active in destroying that relationship right destroying it because far too often when given the opportunity president Obama which side against the cops before the facts were even in how often did we see that we see it we thought constantly it's that damn real estate story was the most obvious one the professor were you at the end of having a beer summit and a bomb and knew he screwed up he was trying to fix it but he had sided against the cops and he kept doing that so that became an accelerated problem under his administration now what's your message to Montgomery County as they ban a friend blueline flag or if you want to call blue lives matter whatever you wanna call it they've banned this flag from appearing in that station despite of local would work on his young son making it for those
