"But she's so much more than that. It's so stylish with the way that it uses These flashes to the imagination of this main character who thinks his father is living somewhere in mexico because he got this one letter and it's presented as if it's kind of home movies and it's just it just immerses you in this world. I think in a way that just like captivated me from beginning to end. So i love it and maybe i'm alone in it and is one of these movies. I almost feel like reluctant to recommend because clearly a lot of people side and didn't think it was anything special. But i hope if something about it intrigues. And i said screw it. No movie made me laugh more this year than bob. Buying tins francis ferguson. A this is a very weird darkly funny pitch black dry comedy about a woman played by kelly willis. Who's kind of bored with her life and her marriage and her job as a substitute teacher and basically decides to kinda hit a do over button in the form of having an affair with a soon and throwing her life away. And there's no movie i've seen at least recently. That just has late tuned in so much so well to like this contempt for everything for just thinking. Everything is kind of a joke in. Everything is ridiculous and everything is stupid. And all through this character francis ferguson. "You sign up for the Patriots, you will get a free copy of the new album. David. Rosen. So You know you can't beat that. That is a great way to get my new album and support the show and support awesome movie air and always know beans and just get a whole bunch of new content. So I say, check that out. And with that being said, why don't we get into this conversation about Nola homes. Right so back with us, it's been awhile since he's been on the show, but we've got our buddy Chad Clinton Freeman here how's it going, Chad always going great and I'm glad to be back. It's been a little bit I've ever just trying to think of the last time I've been on I think it was maybe the Francis Ferguson right? Yeah. Yeah. I think that was the last one. That was a good one and. We were just of talking before we hit record here. This is going to be it's going to be an interesting one. I to cover here today because we both just watched it like late last night before bed and so This might be a little half baked but we're GONNA WE'RE GONNA do our best here to talk about Nola homes good Noah and All the good intentions of this movie which was Pretty Fun I. Think how did you like it oh? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah I did. Enjoy quite a bit and I think. we'll. We'll get into it, but there's there's a lot of things that are done really well with this movie and I think it. It shows a good direction has for as movies in general as far as movies about. you know young women So I think Yeah. There was definitely a lot of positive was going to say you know this is a net flicks movie, but it was not unmade by Netflix's movie. This was a warner brothers movie. That Warner Brothers basically dumped. Because of the pain dynamic and I, think it I think it shows that you know I it. You know there there are several kinds of netflix's movies. There's there's the ones that they pick up from a festival. Like cuties. Sorry had to bring it up. And then they're the ones that. You know basically get dumped by a Studio O. which in this case you know is a good thing because they actually you know have a lot of stuff this year that they needed an outlet or So we get this one the other the other two are the ones that they actually make which are generally terrible, and then the other is when they give money like spike Lee or Martin Scorsese Years Zach Snyder a check and say here, go make a movie. Those are the best ones. Yeah, you know I gotTA. Say before we get into the puzzle pieces, they have been stepping it up a little bit this year with with their output I feel like and granted. There are a lot of netflix releases. I just skip over and don't even watch. But I feel like there has been more good than bad this year, which is a little different from previous years and maybe that has to do with the pandemic and trying to fill our time with some good content or you know maybe they're just really are stepping it up in the Department of what they're purchasing and what they're distributing I..

"Is his third movie I thought his first two were really good as well I'm sure this movie did not make the Kinda money that would give him a marvel movie, but hopefully it at least gives him a little bit of a budget to make another horror movie because he's great at it so yeah I, don't know I'm sure it's available for home watching on some platforms to rent or I don't know if it's on a subscription services, but wherever it is, people should check it out because it's fantastic and I could even see this depending on how the whole weird world of movies goes in the next six months I could even see. This may be being my number one movie at the end of the year. Yeah, that's that's a strong strong statement, not as strong as my sonic. The hedgehog being on my top ten movies of the year list is sonic. The hedgehog also number one on your list. Is That how you ladies and Gentlemen? No, it's not but. Yeah, I do I. Do love Grell on Hansel frigging great movie, So my number one is a movie. Called Francis Ferguson which. Is You know again. We talk about these movies A. Twenty nineteen releases it did hit festivals in two thousand nineteen, but it is listed as a twenty twenty movie on Amazon, which is the only place you could see it but this is just such a movie that is just so connected with its own, just dry, just bleak sense of the world, and it is just. It's got such a strange sense of humor and director Biden who I got to interview here on the show. He's got such a such a point of view that I definitely don't think it's for everybody, but I can actually with this movie so much. I think Kelly Willis The star of this movie. It's her first lead performance in a movie and I. It's probably my favorite performance of the air as well She basically is this woman who decides that she's. So bored with her life that she has an affair with a student to kind of take her life to back to zero kind of to throw her life away in a way, and it's it's a hard ass to ask someone to go along with the protagonist who has an affair with a underage student, but Is, it's hilarious. It is weird. It is dark and it is My favorite thing I've seen this year. Well Yeah I've I've definitely a was aware of your enthusiasm for this movie, and it's something that I should. should check out because it sounds fascinating. It is in an also kind of led me to seven Chinese brothers, one of his previous films, which I also love one of my other favorite things. That's from years ago, but another great movie that I that I wouldn't have even known about it wasn't. This one. So yes, that's our top ten right there before we move onto our our you know honorable mention thing that we wanna do I was going to read off a few. Favorite movie picks from some members of our popcorn and puzzle pieces group. Like I said Jason Harris had mentioned banana split also to people. Chad Clinton Freeman and Victor. August mentioned birds of prey which All Right, I actually up until watching C..

"True to our own history are on story for sure share. Something that did not ring true. To our history, our story was the movie Francis Ferguson which was at. Just, just I'm just saying I didn't I never got to. You. Know Bang my hot high school teacher. That my first kiss was with my babysitter. who was I was I was twelve when she was sixteen and She's hot, but That's a whole different story. We'll get into some other time. I liked this movie a lot. I was watching. This movie netted not to. You know spoil. My. My my review, but I guess well. I liked this movie a lot. I was watching. I found myself thinking like. This type of movie they made three or four of these every year back in the early two thousands right, they had like the movie. Where like the cheerleaders rob the banks remember that they've had election. They had I mean sort of like the twisted teen comedy, not like American Pie, not like can't hardly wait, but like like something Kinda fucked up young adult teen. Ish Type Shit. and. I I missed that that's one of those genres that somehow there was like a flattening of genres over the last ten years. We've talked about this before. Maybe it was over piecing it together, but. You and I've talked about how there's been this like flattening of genres thing lose. There's no such thing as sports movies anymore. Nobody makes sports. What the Fuck Abbott is poor people don't care about sports anymore like that's crazy that they don't. They don't make them anymore. And he's like Quirky. Young comedies is another thing that they don't make anymore and I found myself really liking it. You know. It had a lot of an I didn't listen to the to the pit so i. don't know what the pit episode. pieces you guys use because I didn't want to like A. Like a color or spoil or anything like that? I'd be shocked if you guys didn't mention election. I think. I did use election as a piece. Yeah, yes, so this is a movie about a young woman, unraveling and falling upwards, basically like she's every shows the the the basic premise of the movie is that Francis Ferguson is the name of a woman who's a substitute teacher in a small town in Minnesota or something like that right? If I'm not mistaken. She she sleeps with a high school. Senior has sex with a high school. Senior has fair. She has a kid and a husband she I. Think is supposed to be twenty three twenty four years old. I'm not sure maybe sounds about right so She sleeps with his high school senior. who is I guess seventeen years old and a? In the word gets around She's eventually outed and she asks you become a sexual Predator. She's registered as a sexual Predator or sex vendor and Like. A lot of the work of the movie is getting to that point. And then I think only like. Maybe the last act of the movie is after she's actually gone to jail and Gum you know what happened subsequent to that, I would recommend everybody watched movie. It's fun, but it's light and weird and very wear and I think knowing you the reason that you liked. This movie is because it was established because you. Like a time in movies when this kind of movie came out more. At. They don't make them anymore. Yeah this. have been like Anna Kendrick or something fifteen twenty years ago, they would have had like whatever fifteen twenty years ago..

"Something that claimed things that are like earth shaking and You know and then later. Scientists AREN'T OTHER. Scientists are not able to repeat her results which that's kind of a key tended of the scientific method is like repeatability. Like you know you put water in a freezer and every time it's GonNa turn into ice cubes and like you know. Nobody's been able to repeat the things that she that she Claims are true which are at the core of her vaccine. Denial so I think I don't know I think I'm GonNa Watch it and I think I'm going to try to do some research. I would encourage you to do the same thing and have maybe some jokes commentary ready. I duNno I'll at least jump around it And you can probably watch a podcast like you could probably just listen to the audio or something. I would think so. Yeah Right. It's a shitty documentary. So we'll we'll reconvene a week and And do that. I think it'll be fun so far this year for that one I'll promote it. I will actually put out a I guess like what would be group invite earn event. Yeah how would I do it and invite invite making events will We'll make it events of it will stream it the same way we did this. We got a lot of the bugs out on this run right. I mean yeah. I think it's got to know what we're doing. Now that it's all these other can work in twenty twenty. It's I don't think it could go any better. Everybody thank you so much for being on our on this. We've livestream before but just not like this. Yeah and thank you to Terrance Williams. Yeah if you ever want to come join us on a bird road episode with your absolutely not welcome. I'm not going down that path where I take. You're just you're just upset me because I'd laugh with him more than probably for all wrong reasons. Louis got there is something I kind of want to wrap up with on this like I was disappointed. And I'm going to tell you why the political part of this the political elements of this were so I guess in a Lotta ways similar to Saturday Saturday night live. I should not be that Surprise the political elements of this were so superficial But they didn't go deep and I'm not expecting like You know I'm not expecting Louis. Ck levels of comedy out of you know people who bill themselves as quote unquote conservative. Comedians are the conservative talent The line that made you laugh so much the conservative talent thing but I'm not expecting them to be great but I am expecting them to go hard. I was expecting some more culture where stuff the Colin capital yet. More more like something harder like come come harder. The bigger swing Be a little bit more mean I guess or just have some. I don't know little edge to what you're doing. There was no edge. It was all like Oh look Colin Kaepernick is you know is Kneeling Barack Obama bowing Oh you hey media you are the enemy of the people and it's like well it's like you said it is. It's very much like Saturday night. Live in that. It's just impressions and like that thing impressions. It's callback right. It's not monadnock. Good callback call back to real life where it's cold time. And he saw this week. We've just a bunch of shit that we all saw and we we all consumed at the same time so it it becomes kind of regurgitated right in a parody forum and So it's bad I I know and I was hoping for more out of this. I didn't expect much coming into into. I thought there might be some good jokes. I thought they might really bust on some of our favorites. They might really like really really go hard on Obama or maybe. I don't know go hard on like Nancy. Pelosi is such low hanging fruit. Yeah I know Bernie jokes as far as I remember Bernie. Yeah but you know what? That's that's the thing conservatives ten to steer clear of Birdie there's something going on there can't quite figure it out like not much Joe Biden Shit. I mean Joe Biden fertile ground. You could sit down in a day and write a write in entire fucking sketch about Joe Biden. That would kill. That would kill that a single job. I'd dementia joke not a single Joe Biden sexual assault joke which I I would not have ever thought they would put like. I mean Saturday night. Live of sure has alluded to Donald Trump's grabbed by the pussy right. I mean they've done that plenty of. Oh of course it's not beyond the Pale is what my point because the other thing that conservatives are always working against his that since they're like just infinitely more repugnant. People they get called on being repugnant. Way More so I think people like this guy who wants to be viable and Not Diamond Silk. Himself out of relevance he has to throttle back a little bit and he probably had a few good like rape jokes lined up. Was I can't not do that. Let's not do that and then Sensors or who knows maybe America's one voice or whatever the fuck things called told him to dial it back a little bit on that kind of intensity. I don't know I have a feeling now. I have a feeling that you know. No offense to this poor guy but I just don't think that he had anything like written. I don't think he actually took this reaction comedy. Is this all just like and more so even than that? It is some of that but more so even than that it's just characters it's characters that everybody does like right just basic comedic characters that are don't really apply to what they're you know. What the the idea of this whole thing was like incredulous guy. That says what's on his mind. Yeah exactly it's just heads egg that get into. Almost you know gay sex position like that. That's the joke. The joke is working out. Two guys working out means they're game or they might be gay right. That's the Joe. Nothing to do with With political stuff it. Yeah I mean unless it's see I think that maybe you and I for a lot for us. It's very dog whistles. Where like we don't get some of it and what I mean by that is like I think there's a culture element to it like. I'm thinking of the Hajj twins right. The Hajj twins doing their bit that ends in the simulation of gay sex with each other. I don't know why like that is a that's tuned in as a joke. Poking the left broadly in its acceptance of alternative lifestyles right like because I think what was going on was they were pretending to be they. Were pretend to be liberals Indus- density like the the the the charade was that they were PRETENDING TO BE LIBERALS BILL O. Here's our favorite liberal workouts like the Obama and the capper Nick right and then the the anal sex. I don't know but that's what the joke was for me. You Watch that. And it's just like watching a toddler jump up and down because we're just like it doesn't mean anything it's just like okay. Cool like you know but for them to their audience. I think it holds distinction. That's why it's essays were dog whistling because it's like the people who are supposed to get that will get it in the way that it's supposed to be served up and you and I aren't those people. I hope so for this Guy Sake that those people found it funny. Well I think this is going to be a weekly thing and I think that he's my thing. I think that they pulled this together Like last minute they through this together that there was much planning. I think that there these were some people that were on each other's rolodexes and they were taking. You have something by Saturday. Can you send me a file by Saturday? Yeah get you something of The three of us you know eating ice cream in the kitchen okay. Cool that'll work and then they just cut it all together. Probably Hoping Magic math where he was like. Oh I really hope does equals ninety minutes. I really hope as equals ninety minutes and then Gave up at like twenty eight minutes. What do you want to plug? As LONG AS WE'RE HERE? Oh you know what actually yeah this week? I got an interview with Bob. Buying ten. The Director of Francis Ferguson. Which is one of my favorite movies of two thousand twenty so far so check that out everybody around piecing together. What's Francis for about? It is about a substitute teacher. A woman who has an affair with a student and It's it's a comedy it's a very very very like pitch black dark comedy and is very strange and just just fantastic. It's one of the best on like Kinda breakout performances. First Time actress That I've seen in a long time and I think you would like it. So you should watch where. Ron is on Amazon prime. It's like a prime movie or whatever I mean they'll check it out. Okay that's it. Thanks Folks.

"Things about the movie. That's comedic is kind of watching her. Navigate THAT ENVIRONMENT. Sure you get in there and you're like I hope I'm not like these people and I Dunno I kinda want her in making the film I of want her to get in that environment and start to see similarities and differences. You know and that's part of the path she saw. Yeah for sure and I mean the pathway goes in a I don't know it's like a mostly positive hopeful direction. I think as she's navigating supposed to be. Yeah so another one that was kind of I think an obvious like both my co-host for the episode Chad and I said it immediately was Gus van. Zandt film to die for which I mean you know again. There's not a lot of movies that deal with these kinds of. I don't know if you call it a relationship. That's kind of a relationship between the student teacher. And so what did you think about that one as a piece? I like that movie and I've seen it a few times and I know it caught me off. Guard had seen his other work and melanoma was a big ELM. May and I've Seen Drugstore Cowboy Twenty five times to To die for was yeah. It's just Rokkas good on and I mean I think it also helps that as a gay man. He's looking at a heterosexual relationship. And so it's almost like a science experiment for him to make a movie about a teacher sleeping with student. He's not I don't know he's not heterosexually titillated by the idea of sleeping with his hot teacher. Ray is probably tilted by young Joaquin next and so the movie wants to fuck walkie in Phoenix in a way that that works for sure. Can I say that? Can I say the movie wants to Fuck Joaquin Phoenix? I mean I don't have any objection to it and you know. I think there'll be a lot of people who agree it's supposed to For the movie to work it's supposed to and and I wasn't attracted to Joaquin Phoenix in that movie. But darn near darn near is really quite something so one last one I'll bring up and then we'll see if you have any like specific You know influences that maybe we missed or anything like that but you have some of those. I'm happy I I am sure but the last one I'm going to bring up and we had a bunch more on the episode and I'm not going to go down every single one of them. But but that's the the Netflix series. Orange is the new black which every man. So there you go. It's definitely not inspiration in that sense. It looks like Taylor Schilling. And that's awesome Ma'am not a not a complete moron. But I was dating someone who doing some ironing one time and we had orange juice new black on okay but that's show is not. I'm not the target demographic with that show for sure I don't know who wants I mean I. I fell off after one season two seasons attacking that Chevy. They're better like I didn't even know she was on that show. Yeah she's good very good if I could just watch her scenes of watch orange is the new black. There you go there you know. I'm sure Netflix is working on that feature right now. Anything anything. That Cuba's glued in. Why not like a release a Tashaun Lanseria from orange is the new black there? You go twenty three minutes and then Tasha Leone cut as it were and watching her. We had made the film but watching the Russian doll That's a type of performance. I'm so attracted to love her. You know presence on screen. She's so alert and funny and just really turned on by that type of work right on. I thought that show was astonishing when she was on screen and deeply unwatchable and she was offscreen. So obviously we were not exactly Melania's things here. What are some influences specifically with this project that you had in mind? Well I've I've said this in other interviews. I'm always kind of trying to make an occupiers. Mock know this guy is finished. Director made this thing called the proletariat trilogy in the late eighties and early nineties. I think I'm always trying to make an walking. Maybe so that's more unlike the overall career arc like a lot of your life films. Yeah I mean. He's he's probably. The single biggest influence on me is humor. He makes seventy seven minute movies. Which I like seventy minute Murray's and he's very spare and dry. Yeah and I just think that. I saw his work at a time when I was young enough that it really absorbed in me and I'm just trying to make match factory girl. I'm just trying to make hay minimum called area that I love and I. I think I'm just trying to make those movies interesting Any any others Specifically on Francis Ferguson while I'm update one car like guy really liked charring express it. I think that the last sixty minutes at Chungking Express. I'm always trying to make that movie Basically match factor girl in Chungking Express even though the first forty minutes chungking express. It's doesn't work or man all introduces a new story forty minutes and that's the part that I think is astoundingly. Great so with the reaction of the movie so far. Has there been any From any critic reception. I don't know if you read reviews or any of that but has any of it connected on those influences that you're that you're aiming for now now it's interesting I would say now of course not but He is sort of more well known for a film. You made called La La Vida boheme. And he's known for his more. Recent work with these films have sorta been lost in a way where they're not. They're not very well. No I think they're they're known to fans instead of files but they're sort of he's sort of gotten lost a little bit. Yeah well I mean. That's that's part of the part of the goal to show here is to connect the dots. If you liked this movie go check those out. You know that kind of thing so I'm glad you're bringing them up for sure. Yeah I think. He's got match factor. Carlos is on criterion and. That's it's a flat stone cold masterpiece six sixty eight minutes long awesome. I did want to bring up a one scene from the movie real quick that I just thought so. So funny one of the first arguments between Francis and her husband and she's like She's four husbands. No she's three. Your three. I was wondering. Is that something that came from any kind of a personal experience? Just so so funny Well that was not in the script. We started doing that scene in that that came out of an improvisation where One of us. I mean I've worked a lot with Keith. Plays the husband says somebody got the idea to say your three. I would take credit for it but I know if I did that. Kaley would probably remind me she came up with. She's really good at that type of material like just in the scene coming up with something like that. I know that when keeps his. What is your deal to her. That's just something he said during the same that was. That's great. Would you wanna work with her again shirt for sure and one other question regard to what you were just saying? There is Improv part of of your films. Normally while we had you know we have dared. Krumholz the group therapy leader. He's very good at improvisation. Bring him in without a script and get good material. We we worked with him In a way where I wanted him to know the drill for the scene but the way that he sort of fundamentally made it his you cannot tell the difference between he's giving scripted line in in provence improvise. Long Right. I mean I kind of can but it's not performance based it's just because I know the script but he He's very talented. At sort of seamless mix it scripted and improvised material and some actors like that not very many but some are and then some are really good at giving scripted material in some hate improvising. It it just. It's case by case sure alien was good at improvising. Didn't really want to do it. She wanted to work with scripted material. Okay and then. No one of the thing I wanted to ask about was the Her little internal scream. She let out every so often Where where did the idea for that? Come from I'm sort of drawing a blank. I know that it's demise to the gulping that Dustin often doesn't graduate we actually had a lot more of it in the cut. There were like five of them and I think we cut back two or three but I think she did that once when we were rehearsing for something. We were going to do before Francis Ferguson and and that it made its way into the movie because I thought it was really fucking we had. We had one that I that we caught that. I kind of wish we had yeah. She screens when during the online divorce. Other the the zoom divorce that I guess it'd be the norm now. Zoom divorce sure but yeah we had one in the cut right up to the end. We cut right before before the before. We finish the GOTCHA. But I don't know I mean I don't know if we're going to have these diehard fans with the movie. I know that we have some people who really liked to movie And that's great. I tend to dwell on the things about the movie that I wish work veteran and bringing earnings. Good example. Yeah you know. There's part of me that wishes week. We had taken advantage of the town and interview some of them. And we didn't do it Yeah no I could see where you would want to branch out into more of those characters and how they you know more people from that little town react to her to what she did. Well we screwed up. Well I mean clearly. There's people like me out there who who loved this movie as is. But it's like and I'm gratified that you liked it but I there's a party that still. I don't really believe that you liked it you know. That's that's director. Low self esteem. I guess is is it that way with other films as well? Yes yeah seven Chinese brothers which If you WANNA watch that together sometime we could accumulate hundreds of errors that we made that I can point out to you. That's funny 'cause I I like that almost as much Francis Fergusson. Yeah what are you? What are you working on now like? I'm assuming that you must have things that you are trying to hopefully get back to once. This is all I wrote a new script of. That's kind of a companion piece to a family. Made ten years ago called somebody up. There likes man In in some whites Francis Fergusson is a know like you said a companion piece to our so and and I wrote a new script with A lot of the people that we work in.

"Ord kind of quality and I think that came from my own fear of of being bored by an actor well in that case because seven Chinese brothers which I really loved as well. I mean Jason Schwartzman's character also kind of has a bit of a almost like a contempt for every everyone and everything around Amanda. Yeah Yeah it's similar that's different. Jason was not ordered by a did a really good job of not like he was bored by what I said He's also a genuinely kind. Her said Almost to the detriment of that film and that character. He's really not like Larry at all and He's not a loser. He's a high functioning ambitious constructive person in real life. So you know we might have benefited from someone who who seems more like a loser. We had Hatton Oswal involved with that project for while Bennett at Nozzles. A comedic a Jagir not probably seems more like a loser than Jason Schwartzman. I suppose his kind of rueful and he makes fun of himself in a way that that is maybe more fitted that that idea. It's interesting to hear you say that About Schwartzman because I mean you know as an outsider. Just watching He seems so great in the role but You know clearly a certain thing. You're going for that it's like you. Maybe don't can't disconnect the the actor himself from it. Yeah well when you're outside and you're working with Jason is kind of like a almost like a prints in real life and so there's he's putting on a certain amount of anger and dejected nece in the role and he doesn't really have that ejected nece in real life right exactly. Well you know back on Francis Ferguson. And what you were saying about Kelly. We also head Aria and Beavis and butthead the MTV animated series as possible puzzle pieces. Impacted Francis Ferguson in a one to one way I really liked people like network Stephen Beard and and Martin Star and people from Mike's Universe and wish I could pull off the kind of world debt that he creates Silicon Valley for sure but Again now be not an inspiration for this. Well that's interesting thing Real quick before I move onto the next one. I mean you bringing up Silicon Valley excited when you hit one when you hit while it'd be like mother love yeah we're we're GONNA kill 'em I'm sure but but a quick question is tv. Something that interests you that like you mentioned. Silicon Valley a series is like creating a bigger world like that. That goes on. Yeah I was GONNA do that for pandemic hit. I was GONNA TRY TV. And that felt parton. I think it has me retreating back to just making another little movie. I feel like everything's falling apart. But you know that's another conversation so another another piece that we had mentioned on this show is David Ventures fight club and the idea of just deciding to go to bottom to start over. That's nice yet interests a big figure for me. I like watching his films. Discuss everything seems carefully. Thought out doesn't want his time sure he's also famous for saying all people have perverts and I think there's a perversion is work that I respond. City takes it. I do think that that not only is a very real thing about the movie but then also there's so much comedy around as well just the fact that she ends up interacting with so many people who have various pass that dealt with these kinds of issues. Yeah when you get when you have to Rehab for something like this you tend to get put into a group environments that aren't that thrilling and One of the comedy. "This interview with Bob. Buying ten All right so joining me today. I've got filmmaker Bob Binding Tin. Whose Film Francis Ferguson. We just covered on the show a couple of weeks back and Bob. Thank you so much for joining me by pleasure as I sure you've heard on the episode. I really loved this movie and I was really glad that you were down to do this little interview. We're going to talk about some of the puzzle pieces. We discussed on the main episode. But I also want to just get a chance to talk to you a little bit of a few questions along the way that that I wanted to ask but first of all we're a little confused or wondering about the release of this movie because you know hit a lot of festivals last year one word or to think then I. I saw some press about it possibly opening in November on Amazon prime but then it's listed as a twenty twenty release. I just found out about it in March. When did this actually hit pry it man head into thousand nineteen? I think we wanted to look fresh in there. So we may have changed. Its Two thousand twenty so Hopefully this is find out Yeah no it was. It was something that popped up as a new release and this looks good and I. I honestly I hadn't seen your previous work now. I have in really love a lot of what I've seen and I was glad that I discovered it. But you know jumping into all of that guy. What's this guy's name better? Bender Has Been in an era films yet. Okay jumping into just a couple of questions. I wanted to ask before we jump into some puzzle pieces one of the other films years that I watched a registered sex offender also kind of deals with this. You know it's very different movie but you know kind of within the same. Realm was her. Was that something that you plan to like kind of. Go into this world again of these kinds of actors. Yeah interested in the rehabilitation comedy and and we've made that film many years ago and WanNa to try a different spin with the hot teacher model. Janda the comedy of the a just not it was right for just seems obvious to me that you would make comedy about the teacher. Sex offender It's just it's a no brainer. Yeah it really does seem like and it's it's interesting that filmmakers having gone there explored this kind of story and I think that's part of what what makes us so fresh and so interesting is is that it's just something you really haven't seen you know. Yeah one other thing. I wanted to ask before we jump into this. You know. Obviously we've seen versions of this. That have happened but you know there is like the little title card based on actual events as wondering without any specifics or anything. How much of this came about you know? I don't know about like an Improv kind of way but like from the characters that you had written and how much of it came from any kind of true story. Well we had that a lot of research on these cases and I work with a writer who did comprehensive research so Malcolm Ation of a few teachers and you may know the New York Post as a lot of them stories on the teachers and the that was really the thing that the main inspiration was all the New York right and then I I assume that the character probably changed a bunch. Once you've found Kelly Willis Caitlyn. I developed her together so yeah she and I have been working on something and we just moved the character to to this teacher and it just made sense to me. I'm not sure it made hard sense since her bet that she got the hang of it and I like how turned out for sure for sure. Well let's jump into some of these puzzle pieces which the first one I wanted to bring up. Is the Jody Hill comedy observe and report which just goes to really uncomfortable places with the comedy Are you a fan of jody? Hill's work and what did you think of this as a puzzle piece? I like Jodi. I've met him in Vegas style thousand nine. He's interesting guy I know that what he wants to do with He signed down and stuff. Like that is yeah. It's a it's a neighbor in a community of the type of comedy I like to do Is Very Smart. An influence now not so much. No Okay what about uh another one. We had mentioned fellow. Austin Bill McGowan Richard Lake. Later in the film Bernie I just thought Kinda the weird small town and all these these odd characters and we spent a little bit of time with each one along the way getting to learn about them just a little bit but more so about their reaction to what happened with the central character. Yeah again hats off to. I consider like later to be an actual genius. I don't throw that word around and He's just been a huge inspiration to me again with that movie. He's looking to do something really specific with somebody like Jack Black and to a lesser extent. Shirley maclaine that is different from what I'm doing for sure right. Yeah no definitely a guy with your movie with Francis Ferguson. I mean the the exploration of this kind of character is definitely a different thing But more so about the The the kind of just the weird small town feel. Oh yeah and that the interviews You know if I if I were at a different setting we. We might have tried to make a film where we interviewed people in town. And I think that's a great idea for a movie like this for sure. And you know we might have made an eighty minute movie or minute movie. If we'd done that and again hats off to that kind of making the of you like giving all these films shooting all of them down. It's interesting yeah I mean you you absolutely never know you never know what's going through the mind when when creating these things and you know. Obviously there's something within this kind of character that you're looking to explorer first and foremost more so than trying to go somewhere that that has been gone before. I mean this is clearly a very different kind of story I think one of the inspirations was how uninterested Kelly was in most of what I said and that the character came out of that like my fear of being ignored by her generation You know she's the characters accused kind of flat affect in this kind of Ord kind of quality and I think that came from my own fear of of.

"There in on the joke and they're having as much fun as you are watching you know And and and that was what I got from it But yeah no the. The narration is absolutely fantastic. It really is so funny Do you have any other pieces before we Wrap it up and do the finished puzzle Just a couple hours GONNA WELL. He was going to throw in. Because here's another one that to me is Like observing report in the the humor. It's A movie I absolutely love It's when I watch of quite often It also has sherie. He's a character. That really shouldn't be likable. But the slum. Hal is very very likable. He's almost a Kenny powers. Type character in a way but has sure and then also me and you and everyone we know the man. Miranda July movie That was another one 'cause she's I feel kind of a or at least in that movie. Sort of a toned-down Version of like Todd Sahlins Fun Movie Weirdness And at the same time though very Very human and realistic like we're how we're saying is about how this one is almost too real at Terai But no other than that. I think that was the the only ones that I had notes. Oh I did I did right now. I wrote jody. He'll which that's observing report a road. Todd Solondz did right. John Waters down. I couldn't think of anything specific but I think polyester because just the way how this kind of presents suburbia and The just unhappiness against the Joe is dwelling below the surface of the every day Get up take out the trash you know. Go TO WORK TYPE. Thing Sean. Oh and to throw another TV series in six feet under Six feet under The main thing was that The husband How would she takes out the trash in warning the husbands Over in the car jacking off. I remember There was an episode with with Nate. That he was doing that on six feet so I I don't know I guess some husbands do this. I've never done it so yeah husband anymore but still haven't done it but Anyway so I think we broke the record for the most the TV shows in an episode here a lot of TV shows. Yeah we'll re down that finished Puzzle Guy Observe and report Bernie. Orange is the new black fight club to die for breaking bad. Better Call Saul haters back off. Doria Strangers with candy beavis and Butthead Patch Adams happiness and todd salons films. Just general feeling The Royal Tenenbaums and Wes Anderson Style narration. The Big Shore. Heckscher me and you and everyone we know polyester and six feet under a like you said a lot of TV shows on here but a lot of weird just movies with just such a strange tone of like these small towns and and odd characters kind of difficult to like but you kind of do anyway so one one thought that I did want to mention was just the moment when I kind of liked just really like fell in love with this. Movie is her internal scream thing that a few times was that was. Just maybe my favorite thing this year just so funny. When every time she does that I think what made me fall in love with it was Very early on it was the scene with her husband and the daughter and she tells us when she said she's four. Don't talk to her like she's one says she's three says your three. I love that. Fuck your holes and then also the fact that the daughters named Parfait. Oh Yeah Great. Great Movie I hope more people see. I don't know that they will go a fantastic movie Anybody that's listening to this. That hasn't please do watch it The the the this isn't won't anything but the scene where the mom brings her. The cupcake Birthday so that's the Oscar Oscar Oscar winning moment for sure. Oh Man I think that does it for one Have you seen any other movies recently? You want to Recommend to our listeners. Actually I do have to a I was GONNA recommend of one of them. Could have been a puzzle piece but I was Lincoln and That's The movie family It's Taylor Schilling. Which is Piper from orange is the new black and like I said. I didn't know after watching blanket. I just didn't like this actress or what 'cause I sometimes do have prejudice against actors and actresses But no This film. I hadn't heard anything of it and it just kind of popped up on on streaming so I rented it And it's kind of like uncle. Buck meets the office Not the office but office space. Yeah that's what I was looking for but she's an aunt You know she's like a a business woman and has no time for family. That sort of thing and her sister has a daughter and they need her to watch her and Her daughter is you know trying to discover herself. She's getting into weird things she gets into. Icp And the Taylor's is a character is basically a kind of A. She's a good influence but a bad influence she she is supposed to be picking her up from ballet and the kid goes and his taking karate next door and she kinda supports her during the Crotty and parents. You know they don't want it to be doing that. So anyways fabulous movies very very funny. It's very good things about it. It's very it's very a dark and odd has that same sort of lake Tone is a lot of the stuff that we were talking about a Kate McKinnon's in it too so But then on the serious note the movie swallow a which is a brand new movie Just came out like a month ago. I think on streaming Serious movie totally opposite of what? We're talking about Fabulous families movie though about word housewife That has Pika which is When people Get this fascination with swallowing things that they should not be swallowing You know rocks marbles tax whatever Haley Bennett though In this awesome performance this is just a powerhouse of a movie I would say this year. That Swallow and Francis. Ferguson are definitely to my favorite movies. Both women were completely different but Both very very amazing like performances By the actresses then they carry the movies basically. But this one's more you know it does deal with mental illness and feelings of guilt and feelings of not belonging and things like that so instead of her burning things down like Francis does basically internalizes everything and then she starts to swallow stuff so very not for everybody. I won't admit but fantastic movies. Yeah I've been thinking about watching that because I know you you've been raving about it for a while now and I've seen some other Really great reviews of it so I I think I might have to watch this. It's one I will be revisiting because yeah it's it's one that Very very powerful and Unlike today in But yet there are some cringe moments in it definitely. Nice all right Chad. Well as always thanks for being here on the show. I'm sure we'll be doing it again soon. Enough all right. It was a great talking about this movie and Yeah I'm ready to come back anytime. People go. See this thing at your house.

"Similarities with oranges. Black Zet you've we'll basically you've got Somebody who hasn't really lived life. They're they're young. They're pretty and then they are kind of bored and they get wrapped up in things that they shouldn't just because I almost feel like that they're ward And then they both end up going to prison for their crimes And so I think this is You know influenced by oranges new black but at the same time I don't like Piper on orange is the new black I can end. Piper. I don't know what it is that this one this character Francis I do like And I was just looking at her her her traits and trying to jot down some of the things out of key. I know this though. She's she's she is a narcissist like viper but she's very very very immature and childish and like dramatic and Passive aggressive And Geraldine most of those traits would be things that you would not like about a person but seeing how she's able to pull it off and make it very very fun to to to to watch. I mean for me this movie. I remember the first time I watched it. I was like Oh that's it is over and the second time I watched it I was like it goes by so fast. It's such a great movie is so fun but I I can't put my finger on what it is. That makes her likable but yeah she. She is pretty terrible person. She doesn't give a crap about her daughter and she no she. She had everything given to her. But somehow I'm I'm on board with her. I don't know what it is you know and I don't. I'm not sure what it is either. Because I I agree with you about this whole puzzle piece in the not not liking Piper in you know but I think part of it might be the fact that she Meaning the character in this movie. Francis is kind of making these choices for herself even if they're not good choices it's like it's what she wants to do. In the moment she wants to kind of throw it all away in in just a and go on this kind of downward spiral which is a great Setup for my next puzzle piece. There's there's a joke that was going around twitter Recently that Midsummer is just fight club for girls and I think this in a way is like a fight club girls because because the idea of just kind of just throwing it all away to like really like redefined your your life is you know what's going on with this Francis character in a way I mean. She's she's really just making all these decisions to make her way to the bottom because she is sick of her life and not getting anything out of it even though she has a seemingly. You know Nice Life. It's not the best or anything. Her husband Kinda sucks and it doesn't seem to really mom does but her mom but but she doesn't focus on any of the good that they have right and because she she clearly just doesn't it you know and so she's made this decision to just go to the bottom so she could start back up again and you know we don't know if that's GonNa work for her and it's certainly not in any kind of traditional sense a smart move but I mean maybe it'll work for her we don't really know in the ending we we'd you know everybody that ends. It's possible that things get a little better for possible. Not But But she made a choice to to really go for that. And so I just I think the one of the many themes of fight club which I know a movie. That you famously haven't seen Is that that you know going for bottom to to really you know live life well and the thing is is that that that that makes sense to me here because I think that is what Does make this character in. This movie enjoy was that yes she. She gives in to basically burning her life now starting over I think. Piper is clinging to her pass. Lie Yes and it is. It's almost like she feels. She is old something. I don't think this character Phil. She is Odin. She's not entitled. I right and I think that maybe that makes it enjoyable that she is just like okay. Whatever I mean like yeah so I mean a fight maybe maybe maybe during this quarantine. I can watch fight club. 'cause I got no reason not to watch fight club. Truthfully I haven't ever done on your next piece Well I W- we were talking about some of this early on. We might as well get into it but Gus Van Sant movie which I think this is the second episode in a row. Where mentioned one of his movies Today for Phnom. Which today four is the total opposite of this movie because it's It's still kind of a dark humor kind of film but mostly serious And it's you know about of a teacher that has Sex WITH HIS STUDENTS IN GETS THE STUDENT TO KILL. Her husband So does go a little bit darker but I would say the reaction to that because we're many many years removed from that movie and things have changed and all the ways with the metoo movement and all that but I would say What we were talking about early on about as far as how this movie. Kinda just disappeared and it's just kind of there and nobody knows about it. I think to to die for was kind of like the The the the big breakout movie for Gus Van Sant. That was the movie that Kinda put him on the map. A he was a weird kind of Indie filmmaker and then all of a sudden that one that was the one that got people talking about him And I would say though a looking at the time of release has a big appoint to do with that and I think It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with this film as far as like this film As we were talking about it being kind of hidden and everything like that I think is just timing I add did watch today for not too long ago. I think in the last year a rewatch didn't It is a great movie. It holds up walking Phoenix. I think that was his first role. Even might've been yeah. I think it was Nicole Kidman fantastic has the teacher. It's totally different because again that one's more about the actions and the crimes whereas this is just a character Look at this strange person and following her through these events. Yeah but As far as anytime you talk about a movie where there's a teacher in there you know having sex with one of the students to die for you've gotta bring into the conversation so so that was one that I mainly had on the list that I was like okay. I've gotta to bring it up. Yeah it was on my list to and a great movie and yeah definitely I mean You know deal with that kind of situation which is something that we see. You know all the freaking time now and it you know. This movie could have gone a totally different way. I mean in a different kind of a director could have played this for laughs and then maybe people would have gotten even more mad like big broad comedy laughs. You know but Yeah but the the tone that he sets though is definitely a different kind of thing So I'll go to my next piece. Which is a combination of the television show is breaking bad and better call Saul But both of those of course are you know about about this main character who is a breaking bad making their way to that life and and in this movie Francis Ferguson. We we see her go from. This person is not quite happy in their life to someone. Who is you know? Who doesn't you know makes the decision to go through with you. Know turning their life into something that is less than desirable. Let's just say and And the the the you know what the fallout is of that decision and where that leads them and you know we don't go too far into the future. We don't know what's going to really happen to her in the long term but we do get to see at least the short term results of of those decisions and and then also just to kind of add in just that kind of tone that we've been talking about. There is a lot of that like you know. Oddness to those shows. Too like the townsfolk. All that stuff in Albuquerque and all it's got a very similar kind of small town setting. Yeah no bre- breaking bad a really. It's it's a lot of ways Kind of the. The male version of Orange is the new plaque in some ways And again. I cannot you bring up breaking bad walter white he he is the character that I despise the most out of all cinema at of all. Tv shows okay. That is one character that a do not like whatsoever so again though That is the the another thing that points to how great though this character in this film is I can actually get on her side because Tony Soprano. He's another in our CICIS another character that a despise and Walter White though he is my number one like cannot stand that character whatsoever But yeah no break. Breaking bad is a is a Gordon. Because he basically he he he does The same sort of thing he. He knows he's on his way out so he's just like you know basically let's burn it down and I'm GonNa you know. Help my family in the process of doing it. So right but yeah He he haven has better motive. I would somehow make them less. I mean we don't really have a motive with France's and she even addresses that in the movie that you know like yeah there there. There isn't really any motivation. No better what do you got next. Well we're we're we're it's it's funny because we're on. We're on the series a lake.

"So back on the show with us today. We've got Chad Clinton Freeman. How's it going Chad? Oh thank you I am Doing good I'm glad to be back on the. Yeah especially this would be a pretty fun episode thing. I think so too. I've been looking forward to this. I I did want to try to rewatch it in time for this conversation because this really is my favorite movie. I've seen this year. So far It's just fantastic. The movies Francis Ferguson. Of course. And where did you find out about this one because you saw it first before me right I just was you know whenever new stuff available on prime video on? Hulu on wherever I'm always looking for new and interesting titles and I just happened to stumble across it on Amazon And it was like a ninety nine cent rental and I'm like what is this and then I played the trailer and was like. Hey this looks pretty pretty good so I I watched it. I ended up buying it And yet so I watched it last night Since Nice in this episode but yeah no it really is a fantastic movie is not a movie for everybody. It is a weird kind of movie doubt. Very dark comedy but Yeah it's it is great. Yeah absolutely and you know that whole thing about it Just showing up on Amazon. I mean I definitely do want to. You know. Talk briefly about that before we get into puzzle pieces the fact that you know this movie. It premiered at South by southwest. Twenty nineteen got generally good reviews except for from from people who thought it shouldn't be a movie because subject matter Which for those you haven't watched it yet is about A woman who has an affair with one of her students. She's a teacher and she has an affair with one of her students substitute teacher substitute teacher. Absolutely and and the movie isn't interested in exactly judging for it But you know it's really open for you to make your interpretation of her but it follows her and she is our protagonist through this movie and a lot of people were very offended by the fact that she's not just immediately you know a villain or anything like that and so. This movie apparently then came out in November of two thousand nineteen but Amazon lists it as a twenty twenty release. I found no coverage of it coming out in November. I found one blog. That mentioned it as being a movie on Amazon in November. And that was it otherwise. All the reviews are from those initial Film Festival screenings earlier. Nineteen and there's no mention of it coming out in twenty twenty. There's no mention of it coming out in November of twenty nineteen. So this is a weird release. I almost definitely yeah. It's almost like a missing piece is it could be at the same time. It's it is kind of a new release too at the same time and so yeah. I just thought we should get that out of the way ahead of time. Just how strange the release of this movie has been and I have tried to look for any kind of confirmation on what exactly happened. I told You my theory of this movie kinda getting buried because of the subject matter but then at the same at the same time I also under because I know this director a lot of his movies. Are you know kind of like weird not for everyone kind of movies you know? Maybe this is just par for the course for a movie like right. Well the thing is I I was trying to figure out to if if it was just released by the filmmaker or if it actually did get released because it's not on any other for like it's not owned Voodoo. It's not else is just on prime video. So yeah I'm I'm not even really sure But Yeah I'm not real familiar with his other movies but from what I understand yet. He's a very a strange director and his movies do seem to just kind of disappear after they do their festival. Run so yeah. I don't know so. Yeah I'm I'm interested to check out some of his other work after we do this but Why don't we jump into some puzzle? Pieces for Francis Ferguson. What do you got for your first one Well of the the the first one for me That what I think kind of sums it up there. There's some easy ones we could get into right off the bat but I just want to go into this one because it is one of my favorite movies. And that's observe and report They the the humor of this movie An it's more I would save more dry in even darker than observing record is but I think a lot of ways I. It's it's very much a similar film. 'cause you've got a serious subject matter and somehow is just a very fun and funny film even though you've got this really it's almost kind of sad in a way and but at the same time it. It's not because of the way the film is handled the way the The way it's written and the way they're director has his You know chose to present this All about tone the tone tone exactly so I would say for me Observing reported is the the the most like that I could think of as far as tone even down to though also the way you meet. It's not just the main character anything it's every character. There's something weird something odd something off. I mean every character is his way I would say this one is night as Like silly as observant report their door like silly characters to observe reporting and very much a lot of characters that are intended to be a quirky to be quirky. I would say with this one It's going for grounded in reality But still there's this that weird oddness to overall that Reminds me a lot of that film? It's almost like to real in a way like this is so like anti cinematic in a way and that leads to some really unique comedy right. Yeah so yeah no but I think that's a great a great first puzzle piece in my first puzzle piece. I think kind of goes along with that really well with your first one. And that is the Richard Linklater Film Bernie with Jack Black. Yates also you know. It's got a very weird tone to it very like everybody is kind of a little bit off in it. And part of that is due to the non actors that he was using that movie but You know in that movie we also are centered around main character. Who you know did this crime and yet we still kind of like them. Even though they're not really you know a good person necessarily and it you know the things that they did are things that should be. You know th. They're not good things but we're still kind of along for the ride and we still kind of you know are willing to go along with this person and then also just like the strange small town setting all the the odd people around that town that that are reacting to what this person did and so. I think observing report and Bernie just to kick this thing offer to you know really good pieces that really kind of set the tone for this thing. Yeah no Bernie was one that yeah. I didn't even think of that one but yet definitely a along the same lines An and that's fantastic movies. Well now I forgot. Actually that was a link later movie. It's it's so different from His stuff his recent stuff is like all over the place like I mean last flag flying was I thought a great movie but it was like straight up just drama and then get like weird stuff like boyhood is just all over the Moraine. Yes so so. We're talking about the the the the main character and how they're they're basically not a good person but somehow you you are wrong along with them and I totally agree with that Kelly weightless I think is her name. Yeah and this is actually her first film that she's ever been in I Yeah I remember watching it always trying to pinpoint what it was acting me. That makes her such a likable character. Because I I've got a puzzle piece here that was going to bring up is one of the easy ones And the main character in it was very similar. But I don't like her and that is The the net flicks show orange is the new black own. I feel like that. There's a lot of similarities with oranges.
