How are American sanctions affecting ordinary families in Iran? Well, Orion sticking a break in Istanbul Turkey, spent some time talking with NPR's Peter Kenyon about how they're coping. Is to close street is bulls. Most famous commercial boulevard and on a recent afternoon street musician, serenaded people from all over Turkey Europe, Asia, and Iran for Iranians heading next door to Turkey for a break is both easier and less expensive than trying to get to Europe or the US. I met several around ins who were nervous at the idea of having their views recorded worrying about possible retribution by thirties, back home, but some agreed to speak if their family names weren't used corrosion. A young man with sunglasses says Iranians have grown used to economic hard times run on by political clashes beyond their control. About my son is I have nothing to do with sanctions. I don't even really understand what they are. But I do know many businesses are struggling and some are closing that includes his own small business, the textile, shop, he opened with his brother to produce shirts. My mom in audio I have been doing business this way for a year now. And in the past few months, it has become harder, especially after this last announcement by the US about new sanctions. Tonight at gay, and there's no stability, you cannot feel secure things are very uncertain than Iran right now, there's no way of knowing what might happen in the next year or two, and on top of this. There's a lack of trust between the people and the government Mariam's husband Ali, who towers over his wife says he works in the manufacturing sector in Tehran for him. The biggest impact of the recent tensions has been losing hope of seeing his older son, who studying in America Ali says they haven't seen him in three years as to get on the bus to the mobile since Trump has been in office. If we can get Canadian Musa we will go to Niagara Falls. And if our son comes to the other side of the. Falls. We can wave at each other. Under the American sanctions. Iran is facing double digit unemployment, and inflation is running at some forty percent. Sixty two year old Tehran resident for Johnny breaks off a conversation with friends to explain that there are so many ways people are suffering these days. It's hard to say which is worst, but she thinks it's the loss of hope in the younger generation he javelin hall Yankees issued the unemployment is very bad and young people have no motivation. There will probably be a rush to get trademark protection for brand names that use obscene vulgar, even racist language. That's because the supreme court struck down a long standing federal law that bars federal trademark protection for immoral and scandalous language as NPR's Legal Affairs correspondent, Nina totenberg reports the challenge to the law was brought by the owner of a clothing line called, I'm going to let Nina take it from here. The line is called f you see T. You can sound it out yourself. I am not allowed to now. Anybody can trademark brand, but a government approved trademark gives the holder. Extra protection? And in this case, the government denied trademark for F U, C T, citing a federal law that bans such protection for immoral or scandalous names yesterday. The supreme court struck down that law by a six to three vote an odd coalition of the courts, conservative and liberal justices declared that the law violates the first amendment guarantee of free speech because it disfavor, certain ideas, an equally odd combination of three justices disagreed and would have upheld. The law, applying it only to profane, vulgar, and obscene, brand names, and now experts are predicting a race to trademark all kinds of sexually explicit and racist, brand names lawyer Jacqueline lesser specializes in trademark matters. I do believe that this will open the door to indiscriminate applications for terms and words that many or most of us find to be really awful. This is not the first time the supreme court has struggled with this dilemma, though, in a somewhat different context in the nineteen seventies in the pre cable era, comedian George Carlin set out to determine what words he could say on TV and radio I wanted to list because nobody gives you lease. They don't give you a list, wouldn't you think it'd be normal if they didn't want you to say something to tell you what it is, as he put it there were at the time. Lots of descriptions, for forbidden words dirty filthy foul raunchy rude. Crude lewd, less sivvy's indecent profane, obscene blew off color Carlin ended up with seven famous dirty words. All I could think of. And those were the so called seven dirty words that the Federal Communications Commission barred from the airwaves and in nineteen seventy six the supreme court upheld that list ironically in yesterday's F, U, C, T, case dissenters, and at least one of the justices in the majority suggested that the trademark office should have made a similar list, or in the alternative. They suggested congress should make a list like George carlin's in a new statute as chief Justice, John. Roberts, put it in his dissent, the first amendment, protects the freedom of speech. It does not require the government to give aid and comfort to those using obscene vulgar, and profane modes of expression or as Justice Samuel Alito in the majority, put it in a separate opinion. For himself, only our decision does not prevent congress from adopting, a new statute, more focused on obscene, vulgar, and profane brand names. It's not at all clear. However, that the five other justices in the majority would uphold such a statute. So stay tuned. And in the meantime, prepared to dislike a lot of trademarks, you see, they won't be your father's, Nike Swoosh, Nina totenberg, NPR news. Washington. Order with code NPR over the course of the next week or so hundreds of American businesses will have a chance to speak in support of or against the proposed import taxes. Starting today, the US trade office is holding hearings on President Trump's plan to add new tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars on imports from China in less than two weeks. The president is expected to hold a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, president Xi Jinping, NPR's chief economics. Correspondent Scott Horsely is on the line. Hey, scott. Good morning oil. Okay. So the chamber of commerce and other business groups have urged the White House to hold off on more tariffs chamber of commerce, as a powerful group is the president taking them seriously. He doesn't seem to be putting a lot of stock in the chambers argument. There was a chamber. Executive on a CNBC last week. Criticizing the president's trade policies and Trump phoned into the network and basically attack the chambers patriotism, the chamber is probably more for the companies and the people that are members than they are for our country, because without tariffs we would be absolutely outside of something that I won't even mention we would be absolutely at a competitive disadvantage, the likes of which you've never seen a lot of the business community, actually shares. The president's goal of changing China's behavior and getting for example, better protections for intellectual property. But the critic suggests the president's tactics are not the best way to go about that. They cautioned that if the president insists on escalating, the trade war between the US and China both countries are going to suffer. And so is at the focus of these hearings this week. Like we need a little bit of moderation to meet our goal will you'll probably hear that macro argument. But if that was the only thing being argued, you probably wouldn't have to hold hearings all day every day. In the next week. So really this is the chance for individual businesses to stand up and say, if you're going to impose tariffs on China, at least don't tax this particular product. The administration has already published a long list of tariff targets totalling some three hundred billion dollars, a lot of those are consumer goods, so for example, target, and WalMart have come out against these tariffs, but a lot of businesses will have more specific request. Just carve out this particular product from the tariff lift tariff list, we've gone through this before it was some of the administration's earlier terrace, and it is exactly the kind of government picking winners and losers that Republicans in particular used to complain about interesting. So businesses will be arguing on their own behalf. You know, it's been suggested that the threat of higher tariffs is really just a way for President Trump to ensure that president Xi Jinping will sit down with him later this month. What do you think about that? It could be a bargaining chip into the last time these two men met on the sidelines of another international summit last winter. Trump agreed to postpone around of tariff increases just so negotiations. Could continue this latest escalation comes after the administration accused China of backtracking on trade promises. It had already made. So it's possible that the threat of higher tariffs will prompt further concessions, from China, just as Trump is boasted happened with Mexico last month last week. But China is insisting. It will not be bullied. I mean, there's been a lot of focus on China and justifiably, so, but we should point out a remember that is not the only front in the president's trade war, no over the weekend. India announced, higher tariffs on a variety of US exports, including almonds and apples. India had threatened to raise those tariffs last year in response to the administration's tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. But it held off prime minister Modi's government decided to go ahead with these tariffs after the US stripped India of preferential trading status last month now we should say India is a big country. But it's not really a big trading partner for the US are total trade with India's only about a fifth of what it is with China, but Trump has been waging trade battles all over the world. Remember, he is still considering slapping tariffs on imported cars from Europe and Japan, NPR's chief economics, correspondent, Scott Horsely covering the trade war. Thanks. Got good. Be with

There's a growing push in Hollywood to boycott the state of Georgia. It comes in response to Georgia passing a Bill that restricts abortion, but a rising star in the Democratic Party is urging Hollywood not to leave Stacey Abrams. Who lost a close race for governor of door to last year says this is the wrong strategy that it could cost tens of thousands of jobs that people who work in Georgia's entertainment industry, Rachel Martin, talk to Abrahams in Los Angeles, where she has been meeting with Hollywood executives this week. There is a strong emphasis on schilling our values through boycotts. And as a daughter of the south, I appreciate that. But the solution to this challenge, does not come simply from REM. Moving economic opportunities. It actually comes from changing the composition of our leadership. Because while this force pregnancy Bill is one attempt to remove access to health care, their other bills that will follow, if this one doesn't succeed if we want a permanent solution, we need a permanent change in that means investing in political change in the state of Georgia, and that's why I need people to stay and fight. Although can't you do both to some degree. I mean, there are examples of how economic boycotts, can at least creep public pressure that leads to change. I'm thinking of the two thousand sixteen boycott of North Carolina over the transgender bathroom Bill or the boycott that in Indiana of the tension between gay rights and religious freedom. I mean those boycotts created public pressure that helped leverage change. They did. But we have to remember that the LT Hugh community years, building a narrative within the corporations that work while it's happening now has not reached the same place. That's why you see that. It's the entertainment industry. That's pushing back. But when the religious freedom bills, removing it with fortune five hundred company that was tech company, the challenges that in two years, this Bill will likely become law, and if we want to repeal it, we have to recognize the people who pass this law for those legislators, this isn't democ too, how they win election. These are not people who are going to rescind their beliefs or their votes. And so the most effective way to change the outcome is to actually change the people were making decision. Do you think Democrats have missed the boat and not creating the kind of foundation and structure around abortion, that Republicans have over the years. I don't think that they've missed the boat. I think there is a belief that because of the supreme court had made Roe v Wade settled law. And because for forty years the battle despite being joined had never truly moved in the direction of repeal of review weighed, I think Democrats did believe that we were in a safer position. How? Ever my responsibilities to meet the challenge where it stands. And I'm proud of the work that's being done by reproductive choice groups. I'm proud of the voices were hearing coming out of the democratic leaders. But we also have to remember that if Roe v. Wade is overturned, it doesn't ban abortion. It's simply returns the responsibility 'cause the state, and we want the state of Georgia to be effective to have a business climate, that invites not only the entertainment industry with other companies we have to solve our healthcare crisis and that includes solving the crisis of making sure women have access to healthcare by having access to reproductive choice. Former vice president, Joe Biden recently reversed, his long-held support for something called the Hyde amendment which essentially bans federal funding for abortion. Do you believe all Democrats should have a uniform position on all aspects of the abortion debate? I believe that leaders are required to serve the people and abortion access is a healthcare. Right. It is the way women can control their bodies until their futures are economic destiny. And while your personal beliefs are absolutely yours as a leader. I believe that we should be pushing for and electing leaders who reflect that value who believe that women should have the right to make healthcare decisions for themselves, and their families that should be a litmus test for all Democrats running for president. I, I don't use that language, but I do think that for the purposes of this election, we have uniformity among the, the candidates, and I think that's a good thing. There are more than twenty Democrats running for president. Is there space for you? I think that there is space formation. I decided that I can add value to this contest. I have not decided that yet and my job right now is to protect jobs in Georgia. Protect women in Georgia by not only holding onto the entertainment industry jobs that we have, but also thinking about the next five years in ten years in forty years. We should not have to continue litigating bodily atonomy for women. Reproductive freedom for women and my mission is the most TJ way we can secure those rights. And right now, that means staying in fighting in Georgia that was Stacey Abrams talking with Rachel Martin.

Now, the Zona based company is declaring bankruptcy, federal prosecutors played this video as evidence in a trial against insists executives were convicted last month. Raising the ball and would change in the game. Great. It takes a decision to be better than the competition. The two thousand fifteen video featured a person dressed up as a giant bottle of the company's fennel spray and it was supposed to boost sales. The bankruptcy is the latest development in a string of lawsuits against big pharma, as state and federal governments pushed for accountability for the opioid addiction crisis. North country public radio's Brian man has been covering the story closely and he joins us now. So Brian what happened to insists? Yeah, these guys fell really far really fast. They marketed this medication subsists that included feno they're biggest product tens of millions of dollars in sales that it turns out this prescription opioid, like so many others marketed aggressively by the drug industry is really addictive really risky, the company pleaded guilty to series of felony charges, including claims, they bribed doctors to prescribe their medication. Pushing it to patients who should not have been using it. They're gonna pay the federal government, two hundred twenty five million dollars in penalties and company founder, John Kapoor and four other insys executives were convicted last month on racketeering charges in two hundred and twenty five million dollars in penalties is a lot of money. But this is a multibillion dollar corporation. So why did insists need to need to for bankruptcy? Right. You know what it is out? There is a lot of other opioid related lawsuits pending against the company in a statement yesterday, CEO, Andrew long described those as legacy legal challenges, and to capitol that sales of their product of plummeted. So they've announced they'll go through bankruptcy proceedings. Try to resolve all these liabilities and see what's left of the company. I mean, there's some really big names who've been implicated in the opiates crisis. Right Johnson and Johnson is one of them pharmacies like CVS, even organised by other other bankruptcies down the road here. Yeah. Big companies Johnson and Johnson McKesson WalMart. They have really deep pockets, lots of assets. They're not likely to go this bankruptcy route. But executives, for example, at Purdue pharma, the maker of Oxycontin. They have already floated the possibility of bankruptcy. This is being talked about in courtrooms all over the country. Remember, now, Rachel more than eighteen hundred state and local governments have filed these opioid related lawsuits. So the penalties and settlements could run into tens of billions of dollars really rivaling those big tobacco settlements of the nineteen nineties and the question. Now is how much can these companies pay to help clean up the opioid mess without putting them out of business? Well, what about those people who had specific claims against insects? I mean does filing for bankruptcy. Let the company off the hook and paying those families, or those victims of the crisis who fought to write the move attorneys representing a lot of those local governments issued a statement yesterday saying they're going to work now to find what assets remained incest, that might still be sort of attached, but they say their goal is not. Not to bankrupt, these companies that they're targeting. They said they want to use settlements to ease the epidemic seek what they call long term sustainable solutions and one thing. That's interesting here is the federal judge in Ohio, who's overseeing a lot of these cases. A guy named Dan pollster has been really outspoken, calling for some kind of a global negotiated settlement that will get money to community suffering from this epidemic. While also restoring stability to the drug industry, and so far that kind of deal just hasn't happened. But I man with north country public radio. Brian, thank you. We appreciate it. Thank you so much.
