"Today we're going to bring you two of our favorite interviews from the past year conversations about racial justice and policing. Those calls for police reform began after the killing of George Floyd moved from the streets to the ballot box in California, with police reform measures passing from San Diego and Los Angeles to Oakland and San Francisco. And in the next year, lawmakers in Sacramento have promised to revisit some of the statewide reforms that didn't make it out of the legislature in 2020. Some of those ideas could be informed by the work of Governor Gavin Newsom's task force on police reform. It was created in June and co chaired by activists Latifah Simon and Ron Davis. He's a former adviser to President Obama on policing Both have had remarkable lives and careers, and we're excited to bring you our conversations with both Simon and Davis. Today we'll start with Simon here. She is talking about her work in the San Francisco district attorney's office, where she got her start under America's next vice president, Kamila Harris. You know, when I went to go work for the D A's office, it was the newly elected district attorney coming, Harris asked. Do you want to stay outside with your bullhorn? Or do we wanna do something inside here? On and you should call me every day for many weeks trying to convince males running the young woman's Freedom Center at the time. She's like, Come on, let's do something. And you know my first day on the job took a lot of convincing to create a reentry unit and to really focus on the war on drugs in our office and figure out how to, uh push for reforms for young people, especially young people involved in The underground street economy. She showed me I don't know it was 60 Pictures plus of DHS, what came before her and then you see this picture of a black woman on the wall and she said, you know, they're gonna expect me to undo over 150 years of Racists inside in the system. We're not going to be able to do it overnight, but we're going to chip away at it in that time in the D A's office, creating a Program where we push for the release and the dropping of charges in the ceiling of arrest for mostly young black men who were arrested for selling crack, getting folks jobs and daycare and moving them into education. Even within the office, venerable attorneys would laugh on our program. S so it wasn't the District Attorneys association and our local p l. A. They hated what we were doing. Um and I saw the really that that struggle of moving into an institution as an elected leader with this burden, this'll righteous burden of wanting to transform a system. That was really created for the exact opposite reason right about not about transformation. So it was. It's tough, but I'm glad I'm proud of the work that we did, and it was 20 years ago. Yeah. Let me ask you about Kamila Harris is time is d A because as you said, she came in with a lot of expectations, although she didn't really run is the liberal she ran to the right of Terrence, Helen and really, or to the middle. I guess you could say On dshaughnessy after she is the D. A. A cop is killed, and she declines as she promised not to seek the death penalty. And I'm wondering, you know what is your sense? I don't know if you were there then. But you know the family wasn't there, but I remember very it was. It's an opaque memory in my mind. What is your sense of that and how it affected the course of her the rest of her time as DEA and even as a G Where, as you know, she was criticized by the Black caucus in the Legislature for not being progressive enough on police shootings. Use of force that kind of thing. Mm hmm. You know, it's it's interesting. I wasn't there. Uh, you know when Officer Espinosa was murdered, and when anybody is murdered, Uh, it's a deep loss. Um, it's an extreme deep last, but I do remember Being with the young woman that I was working for who had been a systems and I remember watching that funeral and I saw police officers turned their back on the district attorney. There was so much hurt and pain in that room and, you know Watching her now like I'll turn on MSNBC, your CNN and my room and she has you know this this fury in her in this moment, and it reminds me of the conversation that I had with her. She was a mentor. Mind, you know when she decided to run for Senate, and she said the chief that you know, is the district attorney. And even as the a G you have to follow them off. And, uh, I need to write the loss and even progressive D A's You know, George Moscone again, you know, wasn't able to prosecute the men who killed Mario Woods. Um We have a system that and it's very bone marrow. I think it hurts officers and it hurts. Citizens play citizens. We have to create a system of safety that that really works for us all and Again. I'm not reporting that any of this is easy, Okay? Not none of it is easy. If it was easy with any of the great the greatest leaders would have done it. But I'm also clear. I'm also clear and as you know, after the country burned after the assassination of Martin Luther King Civil Rights Act of 68 was past. My hope is that you know every mayor, every police chief heads of unions, Of course, the organizers and activists who have shown a mirror to the American face and challenged our democracy. I have faith that we get it right my role in my day to day life outside of my elected role. Is I run a foundation of this focused on racial justice. And we've been funding movement groups for 20 years toehold leaders to task and it's not just about justice. It's for us in funding these groups about racial justice. We understand that we can't get there until we acknowledge really the again like the architecture of systems. We can get it right. But it's gonna take time. And progress is not swift and Latifah we mentioned earlier You grew up in the Fillmore district. Um, it was a rough time there. I believe. I think you grew up in public housing. Um, tell us about your childhood a little bit..

And this year in many American cities, Street art is turning out to be a welcome symbol of unity for a very divided nation. With the words I'm sorry, Britain next to him. Vince Ballantine is a professional artist. He spray painted the mural of McLean in New York. One thing that he kept saying repeatedly Was. I'm sorry, Ballantine says when he memorializes someone like McClane. He's not really trying to send one clear message. There's a beauty and being a bit ambiguous to the point like the words of there, and he's there, and it's like, okay, cool, But a lot of people still don't know that story. So when they look at it, you know they had to have to interpret it. They're gonna have to say like, Well, what am I looking at? Valentine says. One way to use public spaces is to raise the voice of others were saying, like, You know, we really don't want to get too political There wasn't really space for that to really resonate. But now you know, in the street art world, you know, it's like, sometimes people just don't care. I don't care. You know, If we get permission to do this, we're gonna do it anyway. This is a form of directly expressing something without asking for anyone's permission. Sabina and Ron is a lecturer in architectural history and theory at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London and Ron Studies a lot of street art so much so that her friends affectionately nicknamed her doctor Wall. She says city walls are actually important canvases during times of unrest. They give people the opportunity to assert that their needs aren't being met by public institutions. If we look at the history of all of these forms of wall, marking, most of them do come from a counter cultural and defiant and revolutionary aspiration. And essentially, they are ways off affirmation that people who don't have more powerful ways to affirm themselves Use and Ron believe Street art can actually be used as a tool for unity. Maybe what happens when we encounter messages in the street? There's kind of a questioning that can happen there. Inside us where we think Okay, Who is this person? What made them want to say this? Vince Ballantine wants his work to build a better understanding of one another, not as a symbol to pit people against each other. And that humanization they believe really comes through seeing street are in person They're done with such Energy, and I think that translates if we see something that's of a bigger scale. It impresses us through that their stature is meant to let public institutions no wildly that there are people hurting in America and they want change. Street art is doing what it always does, which is it holds up a mirror. It shows us who we are thean ports of street art to this moment in America is that it's a symbol that could be used to express the desire for unity. It's not just the demand but also an invitation to communicate and better know one another. The one thing that I always just want to drive home. It's not black lives matter versus all lines. Remember, it was. Who is this person? That sword and that by itself? Does so much to make things more, You know, because it's not a command. It's question. How Police Violence Could Impact The Health Of Black Infants
"Floyd's killing in Minneapolis placed police violence again in the national limelight, with protests erupting. But black and Brown communities say the effective police violence is felt long after demonstrations died down. In fact, research shows trauma from racism and violence can leave imprints on a community's health, including on pregnant women. Here's NPR's Yuki Noguchi. Outside the corner store where George Floyd died. Murals, stuffed animals and origami cranes filled the street. So I'm Rachel Heart of men. I am on the faculty. Rachel Hardman grew up nearby and it's a public health professor at the University of Minnesota. We walk in a field where there's a memorial for victims of police violence. It looks like a replica of a cemetery with about 200 grave markers like Ralph Bell, right? Hard del Cheryl over here. Many of these people were local and died at the hands of police. Travis Jordan in Minneapolis. He's actually it was a friend of one of my dear friends, Hardman surveys to makeshift cemetery. My first thought, is it This isn't even all of the names. And that breaks my heart. This scene, she says, doesn't capture the whole of the problem that police violence leaves marks across a community of survivors, their families and neighbors. Hardiman studies racial disparities in health, focusing on a longstanding problem. Black mothers die in childbirth of 3 to 4 Times The rate of whites That holds true regardless of wealth or education. Black babies are more than twice as likely to die in their first year. Research suggests racial discrimination is a likely cause of both preterm birth and infant mortality. Weighing factors like obesity, smoking or poor prenatal care. Hartmann's latest research looks at how police violence in particular might affect that. She studied women in and around Minneapolis after police shot Philando Castille in 2016, and two years later, Thurman Blevins Thurman Blevins had just been killed in North Minneapolis. And we asked folks do you feel like this is impacting your current pregnancy and Over half of the women in our study said Yes, nearly 60% of those women gave birth to pre term babies who were underweight or died at route, she says. It's about stress. Ah, lifetime of struggles of her housing, education and safety. Large body research shows that that stress across pregnancy can have an impact on low birth weight and preterm birth in particular. Then in the start of life is so important, because if we can't get that, right, you know we're setting someone up for a lifetime of pain and a struggle and disadvantage. Examining these struggles, Hardman says, might help doctors better understand challenges for women like Raven Cane. I meet cane and her three week old daughter, Remmy. Okay. Prior to Remmy Kane had five miscarriages with no medical explanation about what caused them. I had gotten an ultrasound and had seen a baby in a strong heartbeat. Literally had come back the next day, and there was nothing there. So I just had this really high anxiety anxiety about losing her pregnancy with Remmy, too. She was about four months pregnant when the pandemic hit. Then George Floyd died blocks from her parent's home. You know, During that time, it was constant sirens when they were saying that the KKK was supposedly in town, and it's just stressful. It's like and then you're trying to Carry life and then you're thinking about them being a black person in this world and the things that they might encounter, Kane tried to distract herself by hosting a family party to reveal she was having a girl. My dad was jumping open down like he was so heavy, he said. He was in the garage and cried a little bit, cried partly out of relief. He told her the world wasn't safe for black boys. Midwife Rebecca Polston. Here's that often. Holsten started roots community birth center five years ago to offer women more support than a traditional hospital. Clinic defied the odds in five years on Lee. One client has had a preterm birth, she says. That's because the clinic addresses trauma. Some of the things that we explore is not finding out the sex. Of their baby because the stress that it brings when you find out that you're having a black sun. That kind of stress, she says, is palpable all around her. After George Floyd's death, Colston says she confronted a group of white men flying Confederate flags three blocks away. She closed the birthing center for a week. But the threat, she says, isn't just from outsiders. Once an elderly neighbor fainted nearby, Polston and her staff rushed to help and the police came up with their hands on their guns saying, What are you doing to us while we're taking blood pressure clearly healthcare providers those Interactions where those who you call for help. May not come to help you but come to harm you shadows every aspect of one's life and it becomes especially acute when you're in your birthing phase of your life. That rings true for coming Love Valenzuela. I don't know how to explain it, but I feel like that trauma is just in my body balance way Low is a doula. Originally from Chile Four years ago, she went into early labor. On her way to the hospital. Police pulled her over for driving with high beams on she told him. him. I I have have an an emergency. emergency. I'm I'm pregnant pregnant and and he he stops stops me. me. I I need need to to see see your your driver's driver's license license and and registration. registration. So So I'm I'm scrambling, scrambling, shaking. shaking. Just remembering makes like my heart beagle so fast. She was scared and her contractions intensified. She says he'd be raided her ticketed her and insisted she keep the windows rolled down its frigid cold. I'm crying my tears or freezing as they're coming down because it's so cold. Her baby survived. But this spring, Valenzuela nearly died giving birth to her second child. She blames her earlier encounter with police because my uterus had worked so hard, potentially from this previous Drama. I actually had an acute hemorrhage. Two months later, George Floyd died about a mile away. She's still haunted that he called out for his mother as he died. So, too, is researcher Rachel Hardiman. You know, when George plaids yelled for his mama and summon all mothers, Hardman stands just a few feet from where he was killed. It's just so painful. You know, this'd why do the work that I do is so that every mom gets to have a healthy baby and Have a good life. She's expanding her research nationally to keep digging into the connections between police violence and its impact on mothers and their babies.
Donald Trump is finished, but will 'Trumpism' prevail?
"It's been more than a week since the us presidential election joe biden of course has claimed victory whereas the president is yet to concede defeat but when donald trump eventually leaves office the question. We have to ask ourselves is is trumpism. Really finished after all the media conventional wisdom the new york times washington. Post the major networks. Cnn msnbc all that conventional wisdom is that the twenty twenty election represents a repudiation of trumpism and what's trump luckily to do after he leaves office well for more. Let's turn to patrick. J buchanan senior adviser to president reagan nixon and ronald reagan. Pat has been a regular fixture in america's opinion pages and cable television shows for generations. Ninety ninety two and ninety six pat buchanan ran for the presidential nomination of his party. The republican party on america first platform pass walking back to you between the lines. Good to your tom now. Let's start with the election itself to spotted trifecta of crises health economic racial the us congressional and presidential contests were very tight. How do you account for that. I think there were tight for this reason. The covid virus which hammered us in march and april and then all during the summer and full took the lodge. That's two hundred and thirty thousand americans and they induced an economic decline unrivalled since the great depression. And then you have to racial turmoil in the country. And the wake of the killing of george floyd in minneapolis riots. And and things like that. So he's really damaged trump in the eyes of the public and his administration and normally they would've killed any presidential candidate. But i will say that in the fall. When trump was further behind he basically one mechanic team won the battle against biden. It was surging at the end of the campaign but he did not get over the top or at least so far so i think what you can say is trump and trumpism won the campaign. They lost the election because of the burdens. They had to terry which were too happy to cross the finish line. And let's not forget that in the late up to the election the metric conventional wisdom the polls the pundits. They predicted a democratic sweep. A blue wave washing the republicans out of power capturing the senate and delivering an alleged democratic congressional majority if the democrats did indeed have a clean sweep of the congress and the white house what would radical progressive in the american takes. What would that have made if you had nancy. Pelosi in control of the house and chuck schumer and control. The should i which looks less and less likely now and preston biden into white house. Biden's problem would be the tremendous pressure from the progressive left wing of this party to impose his leftist agenda. The party home to the country in the first two years of his administration. And i think it would be virtually impossible biden to resist the democrats cheap to kill the filibuster. Which would eliminate the ability of the republicans to stop their agenda and we would be off to the races with medicare for all the green new deal statehood for puerto rico statehood for dc. Defunding the cops. Pack the supreme court the whole left wing democratic agenda. They would try to ram through with fifty one votes. In the senate and biden frankly would be restraining force because republicans wouldn't be able to do it if they lost the filibuster in the senate which is what. Barack obama urged the democrats to take away if they win the senate okay now bought and has pasta to sydney electoral college. Votes needed to win the white house now given that it's very hard to prove widespread electoral fraud pat. Why want trump just accept defeat. Here's trump is demanding that he be allowed to play out last play of the deal. Because i think he feels he has been treated horribly by the democrats and the liberals in the press and he's not gonna do them a favour. He's got a right to make sure. The counselor made and certain things happen by certain dates. He's not going to speed up the transition. It's not gonna be a pleasant transition at all. He's going to treat them the way they felt. They treated him when he came in with the russia investigation and all the rest of it. So i think what you're getting is. Trump is looking at upon this if it succeeds is a hostile takeover of the government of the united states. And he is acting to resisted with every legal constitutional weapon. He has so it's This is not a cordial country power at all. Okay but with dany. Before the nineteen sixty presidential election between richard nixon and john f kennedy. That was very taught. There was a lot of speculation about electoral fraud in texas and illinois. And that of course benefited. The democrats won that election now. Apologies for the very scratchy. Sound quality of these vintage news report from sixty years ago. but he's nixon. Your boss pat here. He is at four. Am at republican headquarters. After the election conceding. Defeat to and and results shows come in if the present trend continues If mr kennedy and senator kennedy will be the next president of the united states senators kennedy now. And i want you know that. Certainly this trend has continued and he does become our next president that he will have my. That's richard nixon conceding. Defeat john f. kennedy in nineteen sixty pat buchanan. Why can't trump do a nixon accept defeat graciously that at four am gathering. My wife was present. She worked for richard nixon and the nineteen sixty campaign and travel. The country would and the point is that was a different time in a different country. That america's today america's bitterly divided and one of the contributing factors is the is the belief correct in my view that donald trump was denied. Not only a good transition but donald trump was investigated by the fbi and during the transition. They went after his state of the fbi did and they had a two year investigation beach. Kim they try to defeat him then they tried to overthrow him. And i think trump feels this and he says i established nothing. They can go. I mean they can go too far as i'm concerned and we're going to run this old way out and make sure every ballot is counted and all the towns are accurate. And whether or not we're going to go to court and exercise our rights and we're not going to pretend otherwise that this is a pleasant for easy transfer of power this was a hostile takeover and trump's view. I mean they're campaign run against him former first lady. Michelle obama is already talking about the house and he could and racism and the rest endemic pain in what he come folks voted for. So i think look you gotta divided country and there's no sense pretending otherwise and trump is not gonna gauge any pretense.
A Conversation With Ramona Hood, CEO, FedEx Custom Critical
"We are very very excited to have ramona hood. Join us on skimmed from the couch. She is the ceo and president of fedex custom critical and she brings over twenty eight years of experience at fedex to her role. That's because as we'll get into ramona's started her career the company as a receptionist back in nineteen ninety one for mona. We are so excited to have you with us today. Welcomed skimmed from the couch. Thank you danielle. I'm really excited to be here today. Even if it is a virtual. I know it's it's so we've done know now. We've been at home since march many of the people listening and it's been incredible. How many people we've met in a pandemic without actually meeting them will joking the other day. We have a new chief product officer. And we're like we don't even know how tall you are. We've never met in person that that's funny. We have some similar experiences. I have two people that were added to my executive team after cova so we made hiring decisions virtually and we have been on boarding people virtually as well but we're adapting to the new way of working. Yeah i think everyone is is having to so. Let's start off with a basic question. Me ask everyone. Skim your resume for us. Gosh if i would start my resume with twenty eight years at fedex. I'd like to tell people. I grew up there. I also like to say. I started when i was five. And i've had a great career at fedex. Starting asked the receptionist. At the time it was roberts express and i moved from the receptionist roll into our safety and contractor relations department. I had an opportunity of really spending about five to seven years in that area and it was the place that i met my first mentor. The director of the department had asked what my career goals were in my aspirations and was the first time that i really put thought into what my interests were and it started with leadership. So i'll talk a little bit more about mentorship later. But i spent five to seven years. There then moved to the operation area. So that i can gain. Pnl experience and have accountability. for that. then. I moved into sales and marketing and also had an opportunity to lead a wholly-owned subsidiary from there i moved into a different fedex atp company we had acquired a company and there was a need for an officer to lead one of the business units and so i took that opportunity which gave me experience on working on post. Acquisition integration work with identifying synergies for the business as well as for the team members and then from there i moved back to fedex custom critical as an officer of operations strategy and planning and also managed our pricing strategy as well as our data and science group and from there i had an opportunity in the impact of two thousand nineteen. Our ceo and president was retiring and so i had an opportunity to be appointed to the ceo and president role in january and started Leading very methodically through the first ninety days and then covert nineteen hit and so that was the first crisis that i began to lead through in my first ninety days and then shortly after that the death of george floyd really brought a platform to talk through the racial injustice that we were seeing in the country and again leading the organisation through that difficult time so eight months into my new role. And i feel like. I've learned a lot and really thankful for the team. I have that has supported me throughout the timeframe. And i'm sure that's exactly what you thought the first eight months and specifically the first ninety days we're going to hold. What is something that people would be surprised to know about. You are something that we can't google or find on your lincoln. So i think if you know me. It's pretty clear what. I would how i would answer this question. But for people who don't know me and if you would google me you won't be able to find it. I am a big foodie. I've loved to eat. I come from a family where we use food as a way to socialize entertain. It is to manage our feelings whether they're happy sad or whatever the case may be so. I enjoy food. I enjoy eating as well as a little cooking. But for the most part it's the eating and sampling. New things that i enjoy.
