How Do Glow Sticks Work?
"Brain stuff. This is Christian Sagar you have seen glow sticks before I. Bet they bring a festive glow to Halloween trick or treating and New Year's eve celebrations, and they are a useful gear for explorers from scuba divers to spinnakers. When you find a bunch of people gathered at a party in the dark at least a few of them will probably be wielding glow sticks. But what the heck are these things and how do they work? Well, glow sticks are powered by process called Cama luminescence don't let the name scare you luminescence is just a fancy word for any emission of light not caused by heating we see luminescence and stuff like TV's neon. Signs and firefly's the chem luminescence in glow sticks is a pretty simple reaction caused by mixing chemical compounds. Compounds are made up of different elements bonded together in specific proportions so that they can't be mechanically separated. It takes a chemical reaction to sort out for example, the oxygen from the hydrogen and water. When you mix a compound with other stuff, you can set off that reaction and as the atoms rearrange themselves either absorb all release energy. If you look inside a glow stick, you'll see that there's a small glass vile in the tube. This file typically contains a hydrogen peroxide solution called the activator it's floating in a solution containing a compound called phenyle oxalate. Ester and a fluorescent dye you still with me. Okay. When you snap a glow, stick the vial breaks in the Hydrogen Peroxide reacts with the phenyle oxalate Ester creating to other compounds phenyle and a pair oxy acid ester. Okay. Still with me again. Okay. This para oxy acid stuff is unstable. So it decomposes and produces additional finol. It also produces a cyclic Perry compound which decomposes to carbon dioxide. This decomposition releases energy to the die the electrons in the atoms jump to a higher level than fall back down releasing energy in the form of light the other in the fluorescent dye, determine the color of this light all this happens within moments of snapping. And shaking your glow stick depending on which compounds are used, the chemical reaction can continue for anywhere from just a few minutes to hours warmer temperatures will accelerate the reaction making the stick glow brighter. But for a shorter amount of time when it's cooler, the reaction will slow down making the light dimmer, which means that if you want to preserve your light stick, put it in the freezer overnight, it won't stop the process, but it will slow it down and drag out the reaction. So it turns out that there's some pretty nifty science behind the humble glow stick check it out the next time you're scuba diving partying or you know whatever it is you.

"Apple. So you said. You've been the emirate EAC you. Marry. Enlisted, elementary. Silicon clearly don't you. Give Up Bongo with respect on the second later. Puts get. Medical meanness when both guest committed for theft better soda you OUTTA. Yes must go to. Alerts, the muscle. But fouled admitted kb that must've been. Aspen. Excellent podcast Gumbo has gone international. I was so excited that Isabel greed to be a guest. So I could test out how well my ninth and tenth grade Spanish classes have held up all these years. So let's see how well I can translate what said. Here we go. Hi Paul. It's Isabel today is September twenty second and here Madrid like in the rest of the northern hemisphere, it's the tunnel equinoxes. I get very sad when the summer ends and that's why I want you to recommend me a podcast that can give me hope to endure the days that gets shorter the days get colder. Please make me believe there's life beyond summer. Thanks Ball. Had, I do. Okay truth be told I cheated I. Ask Isabel to translate what she said and I just read that back. After mismatch Zia would not be proud. For my first recommendation I found an apology is Minnesota with Alli Ward in it. Allie suggestive tissues word that she thinks should be a word. I east to. In this episode she talks about things we associate with summer firefly's watermelon barbecues and peeing in pools. So if the tunnel equinox gets you down, grow up something on the Barbie track down some hollow watermelon an post, a few picks using the tunnel equinoxes Hashtag. Today's guest is Isabel Cadenas. Kenyan. Isabel. Is the host of the day S? No CEO Blah podcast. DASS OH say no OB, La is a narrative nonfiction podcast that tries to connect the dots between personal and collective silences. The big news is that the podcast just dropped this week so you can listen right from the get go. For Third Recommendation Isabel recommends the magic carpet flight manual podcast. Isabel says, and I quote. The podcasts I'd like to recommend is Kathy Fitzgerald's the magic carpet flight manual. I liked this story because Kathy's delicacy in writing and tracking is as magic as the flying carpet itself unquote. For today's extra hot sauce I'm going to say that the one Spanish word that I'll never forget is Limpia Para Rhesus. Don't ask me why because I've never had a reason to use it ever since learning it. It means windshield wiper.
"Okay? Let's talk about what we've been playing I know at least seventeen on Ivan playing ghost of Sakina just their view. Our interview a came out this week. got a nine from Mitchell ends. Everybody seems to be really really enjoying it. I know I. Am that also true for both of you? Hands Down like gotta be the most gorgeous game I've ever played. It's very pretty. It's very pretty. I mean there's just there's firefly's everywhere. They're like little butterflies. flapping around the attention to detail is amazing, but like even when you're walking over yellow like yellow leaves from from falling from the trees you can see. They're like sweeping up behind you and they go faster as you run faster. It really is amazing to look at 'EM SALMON I. We're talking about this at some point off. Scoop. and Sam mentioned like it's such a bummer when it's nighttime because you don't get to see all of all of this like loveliness and all its glory. But. Yeah, understand are really cool, but sunny day really really makes things amazing in that game, and then there's these moments where like I I mean they sat when you go into a story, they set the time for that and that's like a trick they're using because sometimes you're like in the the golden forest area, and everything's like autumn looking because y'all. It's like all seasons at once in that game. And and you. The Sun is like as big as the screen is. Gold and everything is silhouetted in, and it's just like it's unbelievable, but it's still an open world game, and that'll just happen. Naturally were moving around. It's like the thing that breath wild did which I thought was really cool. Which says well is the wind like like these Grassy Plains, the wind looks amazing, sweeping through them, and there's giant fields of flowers, and you keep like our. That's probably going to be the most beautiful. Beautiful place in the game and then they went up it with like another field of flowers has cool rocks in it or something, or they have like a swarm of starlings that is the most realistic depiction of a swarm of birds have ever seen in any games in any way just looks incredible analytical. All three of those elements that you mentioned are also gameplay elements. The bird heads the flowers and the wind. The wind actually really liked that. They use the wind to tell you where to go. Yeah although really cool mechanic. Yeah, it's really windy and my Sushi Malvo because I'm just like. Wait. What direction wait am I going the right way? My Hair's total again. Just miserable, be a nice summer fall, maybe autumn or Spring Day, but it's just a little bit chilly because of that wind. I'm playing it coming immediately coming off of last part too, so it's a little bit interesting. compete playing those games one after the other last of his party was really like shooting for the stars and trying to get do something different. Give you an original experience play with the way narratives working games play with your expectations, trying to do all this new stuff or as ghosts of Sushi. Shema I feel like it's just a very traditional open world action game, which isn't a knock against it at all I just feel it's like the AAA open action game refined to perfection. It's honestly the breath of fresh air that I was hoping for following the. Exactly that kind of air. Thank you. Breath of fresh wind. Because I mean aside from all this stuff about like the last of us being this really like dark and brutal world that depicts humanity in such a like depressing perspective go Sushi Shema is pretty much the opposite of that in a lot of ways but I like like I'm going really slowly through the main story beats actually because I. Love The side quests in the site. I'll give you something different. level you up in different ways, or you can get legendary armor and weapons with some of the. Specific side quests so I I just love being in the world and spending as much time as possible searching everywhere like looking for all the little elements of the story that are living in these tiny pockets as opposed to the loss of us, which is just as like grand big cinematic experience, also you use triangle really dominantly in the last of us for like access points like opening doors, or whatever, and then in goes Chima. You are, too, so I have definitely accidentally hacked the hell out of my poor horse, trying to mount it, which which sources you big or jumped off the Horse I. Yeah! I picked the white horse and I named him Nobu for trust. three two three horses that you get to choose from Black Arstan puffy. That's exactly what I have class. Hacking I. Aside from the beauty of the game. I think there's a little bit of like Damon was saying like what? What's an open world RPG going for like it is trying to? It's more like assassins creed in anything else, but I I personally like it better than assassins creed I think it's like a a because I like the sword combat. Now it's been frustrating for a very long time, but now I have like these multiple stances. Stances them switching through. It's really fun. I found the way that I like to play, which is rolling a lot and dodging instead of parrying which I just suck at I'm just so bad at that and a better fighting games, too. I always knew like I. Play Friends. Wednesday got good at blocking and like street fighter two. I'd be like well. I can't play anymore I. Just don't like I'm out
The Lightbulb Strikes Back
"So we're talking with a niece Ramirez a material scientists about her new book on inventions the technologies that we've created that intern have shaped us one chapter that captures this dance and really threw me for a loop. Was the one on artificial light. I mean it's all around us and yet I don't give it a second thought or barely. Even I thought if I'm honest yeah I had no idea. The Light Bulb is such a simple invention and I used to be a professor for many years. If I were to give a lecture on it I would just say this is on and this is off the lecture go home. Well don't go home because in her book a nieces serves us up some late. Eighteen hundreds drama are characters. Thomas Edison to you probably know and William Wallace who you probably don't see Edison who is largely credited with the light bulbs. Invention was actually inspired after going to visit Wallace. One Night Wallace was super excited to have the Thomas. Edison at his house cooked them. A meal showed him like contraption. But at the end of the night Edison's like great. Start Buddy now watch me make this without you? He's leaving the man's house and he's saying I'm GonNa beat you wallace. You're going the wrong direction. And he does. I'm just GonNa say I feel like William? Almost got robbed Wallace did get rob. And what's so bad about him? I live two cities over from William Wallace lives. I've been here about ten years. I never heard Wallace right. And I go over to that city. Nobody's heard of walls. He's been completely erased even more complicated than the history of the light. Bulb is how artificial light has affected our lives. Our Body has two modes has daytime mode and a nighttime mode and how it knows what mode to be in is by the type of light it needs blue light to know that it should be in daytime mode where we have a higher temperature higher metabolism and then as the light changes where it has less blue sort of in the evening or when our ancestors were alive when we lived under candlelight our bodies would enter into nighttime mode and we would be in this rest or repair mode but most of us live by artificial lights. Yeah and so. We're getting continuous blue light all the time and we're daytime all the time right and so being you know. Constantly bathed in blue light can throw off our MELATONIN LEVELS. Right that hormone. That tells us kind of that. It sleep time. That's right that's right. It's an old molecule and we have in our bodies it tells all of ourselves to go into nighttime mode but I've heard that very small marine animals they have to and it lets them know to rise to the surface when it safe and wanted to go back down. So it's a very old molecule. It tells the cells that it is nighttime mode and so you should be in rest mode and So Melatonin is going throughout our bodies and it tells us to go into rest mode but Melatonin is suppressed when blue light is detected by the photo sensor there. Yeah right so some of the advice in the book is to reduce the amount of blue light. You're exposed to later at night so you kind of want redder late less blue light so powering down your cellphone and computers and maybe having kind of a nighttime only light in your room. That's more red light. Is that right? Yeah it sounds Corny. But I actually did it after I started writing this book and my brother who I live with he. He now wears these funky yellow glasses from time to time. I'm like crazy. But he wants to put put himself nighttime mode but but in the mornings we should have Bluer Light. So go outside. The Sun has blue light or blue. Led's or compact fluorescents as the sun sets. We reduce those blue lights. If you don't have Non Blue Lights you know. Just dim them. So there's not a lot of like going into your eye but you can use redder lights so there's red. Led's and incandescent bulbs yeah and then also changed the setting on your computer so that it's a nighttime mode. Nice okay. So it'll come as a surprise to probably nobody but our creation of artificial light. Has You know intern. Really negatively affected the natural world in some ways so when really concrete of this is the courtship of lightning bugs. Yeah Awhile I love firefly's and I didn't know that there was a bar scene going in my backyard when I saw firefly's and what's going on is the firefly mail is announcing himself saying. Hey I'm a male screen and the females looking and if she likes what she sees she'll flash back. I like you and then they go meet future firefly's but what I've learned is that the number firefly's is decreasing and it has to do with the streetlights so the male fireflies will announce himself and female firefly won't see him and so she won't flashback no future firefly's and another scenario which is even worse is that he'll announce himself with the street lights above him. She'll see him. She's not impressed. Because FEMALES LARRY. Flies like male fireflies bright lanterns in his lantern is looking pretty dim in front of that street light. So it's right like he has game but artificial late is coming in there and is it. Yeah is messing with him. He's like no it's bright really is bright and she's like. I'm sorry and she swipes left. That's it no future firefly's come on humans like help. Agai messing me up. I mean Gosh. What does it take? This is fun. Okay so something that really struck me was. How many historical figures we meet in your book who you know tinkered and tinkered away for months and years on those inventions like you spent pages describing Henry. Bessemer 's early experiments with making steel. Why was it important for you to kind of include that entire process? Well we kinda live in the microwave generation and we think that you know in three minutes Things are gonNA happen right away and scientists fun but science does take was some work and what? I'm trying to impress upon people. Is that even though? It was long and arduous for them. What motivated them that they were passionate about it. And when you're passionate about something that time doesn't seem to be so onerous so So I just thought it was important to show that people worked really hard to do things. And it's not an instant overnight success that it does require some some time and effort. Yeah so throughout the book. The inventors are noted as frequently for their successes and failures not just in perfecting their inventions but also their personalities. What made you decide to focus on that interplay? Well I think story years or stickier I wanted people to really resonate with technology and talking about stuff by itself portrait of stuff that works for some people but if you hear about the people in the motivation and then you see oh you see their flaws. Then you really are pulled into the story and to be quite honest. I all I actually wanted. To debunk a lot of geniuses to. I wanted to really get into people's stuff and so I'm in the archives and I'm looking at old papers and I'm like all right. I'm here to get into your dirty laundry. Tell me about you and Samuel Morse. I'm like all right. I'm in you I'M GONNA. Oh Wow you're not such a nice person. I'm gonNA write that down. I I need people to know about that. Because we loft these geniuses and what I want the next generation to feel like they too can be inventors right because if we make these people seem so brilliant that they feel distant feels unachievable. But if we're like. Wow that guy was kind of a jerk. If he can do it I can do it That's that's my motivation. That's exactly what I want people to say.
Protests break out in Michigan over state's stay-at-home order
"And I have mixed emotions about Michigan because my dad grew up there as a kid I went back as a kid many times to visit my many uncles all of whom are gone now and I had a great time going to Michigan I love the fireflies and everything else I'm also pretty crazy about the U. S. secretary of education Betsy to boss who was on the show yesterday I think she's a terrific public official as a member of president trump's cabinet now the governor of Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer not so crazy about her she has done some one eighties she has been inconsistent and now apparently her actions to try to act on the China virus infection in America have drawn literally a massive protest against her and threats of recall so I thought we got to talk to Scott holiday about that Scott is with our affiliate station W. I. L. as in Lansing which is ground zero for these protests as well Hey Scott welcome back to the program Hey thanks largely to being a it's been too long and of course we also had the little side issue that apparently Gretchen Whitmer didn't think before she decided to blast Betsy to boss saying that the the device family was waging war on her at a time when the device family which is very wealthy family was also apparently producing mass or providing massive amounts of personal protective equipment for some of the critical functions that are going on at Michigan barely that that is caper notice when she when she threw that little brick bat at the secretary of education give me a perspective on what's happening and what happened today in particular with these protests in Lansing yeah one Lansing today there were it was called the operation gridlock and the idea was to basically have a a socially distance protest normally when you have a protest in downtown Lansing it would be lots of people filling up the capitol lawn that were a hundred maybe two hundred that did get out of their cars but today was very unique up police said there were maybe up for five thousand people involved but it was simply cars filling up all of downtown Lansing even out onto the highway that runs through downtown now the only gridlock they were causing with the phone because downtown Lansing is all government workers and a lobbyist and everybody's working from home right now but it was certainly an impressive showing in cars honking horns all day long and there were some people that I guess I got out of the cars and wave flags around and it was it was an impressive showing so they certainly made their voices heard I mean it's kind of the goal was to get some good TV footage and some footage stand about going on social media I think they they succeeded yeah it was very visible to the whole country and their protest look an awful lot of as you know are under these kind of restrictions no matter where you are in America there only a few states that haven't gone along with that at all but what is going on in Michigan that the governor does not seem to have the support of the public in taking actions and some of the action chief Tate she's taken are almost laughably over the top like saying you can still go get food but don't dare you don't you dare buy a gallon of paint at home depot or don't buy any garden seeds to get your garden going so what some people are calling virus guards this year because who knows what's going to happen with the food supply I mean the idea that that she would lock down many things that don't seem to have any direct application to actually keeping people from getting sick well I think the the governor's done not kind of a daily briefing much like the president has been the one she gave this afternoon of the protest was kind of winding down I think was a good example of where she's coming from she cited one of the survivors that had met with the president yesterday who was from Michigan and she quoted as telling the president that the only place he could conceive that he might have caught the virus because it wasn't around too many people was from a gas pump and she was citing how long she's been told that the virus can live on well services like gas pumps and it's pretty clear from what she said and what she's trying to do that as she's trying to keep as many people home as possible by whatever means she can and that was one of the things were you know you can travel to a second home well that's cottages in Michigan which it sounds like you're familiar with a lot of people would be traveling from southeast Michigan which is the hub of coronavirus here in Michigan and traveling to other parts of the state and in her mind going through a lot of gas stations and touching a lot of things and potentially getting a lot of people second from what she said today it she was basically you know pleading with people to please stay home I I get the sense that her her alternate goals can we get this thing open back up by the end of the month and she's kind of willing to do whatever it takes to keep people home enough that takes doing some unpopular orders looks like she's going to
"firefly" Discussed on Shutdown Fullcast
"With a piece of swinging. Yep So more on opera. Is I my umbrella term for a form of entertainment where there will be no serious stretching? They will be very few expectations overcome. And on the whole it's all done with a kind of loving acceptance of a certain level of like Real but stupidity right. My best example of this is Walker Texas Ranger okay. 'cause I was watching the bone yard match. I thought man God is so awesome. And it's so stupid and it has so many conventions which have been passed on for like a hundred years about big man fight and big man fight little man that it all just made me think of Walker Texas ranger another sort of thing where like the bone yard. I knew who is going to win. I knew that at one point I would be asked to believe something completely unbelievable and signed off on it ahead of time right like the minute. The undertaker appears in a story. I'm like well some sort of spectral. Shenanigans will probably occur. Yeah that man's going in a grave and then he's GonNa come out and then he's going to put the other guy in the grave. Yeah that's going to happen right the dialogue. I'm not looking for some kind of like you know. A extremely constructed artisanal toughness a law. You know. your hell or high water. Your highbrow Western No. I'm looking for the big dumb western like tombstone. Tombstone is also firmly Moron Opera. By the way right there's a little fig-leaf of smart guy in there where you know we put we put the Smart Guy Val kilmer as they effeminate intellectual who can still like shoot a bird at five hundred yards with a pistol. Even though he's got to barking lows right now tombstones good more on opera. Great Moron Opera. Because as I quote in the description all mustaches. Enlightening a real. I think in that movie have Kurt Russell. Daring someone to shoot him in the head. So like what more do you need like. What's in that. Smoke Wagon Yeah. That's what he says. At one point a man is abusing a horse and Kurt Russell Rolls over hits the man on the face of the bridal says hurts donut. Yeah yeah that's right. You know stupid people. Stupid people in more on opera aren't stupid they're like grandiosely theatrically stupid like Billy Bob Thornton Character. The dealer dealer. If you'll remember who says God damn it's I'm playing with my kids who just vulgar like throwing bottles everywhere. It's not just that the bad guys bad or the stupid stupid. They're grandiosely stupid crazy. People aren't just crazy. They're like crazy beyond their own interest in for no goddamn reason right Michael Biehn Michael Biehn in that movie right. Hey longer. A Michael Biehn takes no scenes off in that movie and has an intensity that no man alive has ever possessed. And that's the point so when you get that when you get to an episode of Walker Texas Ranger where I know Walkers GonNA end up spinning heel kick somebody right where I know in gene in action jeans right there any other guys unfortunately yes although who wrestled. Jeez Oh Elias. Allies at Wrestlemainia heads of great action jeans man within this very within the bone yard. I believe at least. Aj was jeans was was in leather. Aj style died. Died Boone genes so Pete Georgia. It is how he would've wanted to go. Berryman boot Cutter Bass pro shop with much slack. James Source Book longer. This is a good one and he also Allah's GonNa. I was going to yell at him about his prowess of getting tractor started faster. But you know he's dead now de match would have been over if AJ styles head any actual manual labor in his life. He could have started that tractor sooner and put the dead man down but instead know the undertaker Rose from the grave without explanation also with the Africa lighting behind him. Remember with the undertaker gets going this being more on opera. Everything's on the table right. It's one of the great liberating things about the form I would. I would include by the way final. Deletion classic more on opera absolutely. Yeah that's probably a better category for it. Like if you compare these things in this one you have. Why are they fighting well because AJ styles said undertaker's wife is mean? Were page styles must die. That's story right. We've got good. Lights really convoluted metaphors about his wife and her career is yes. That's that's the other thing too like like you're not asking me to overcome the Patriarchy in a in Moron opera right. You're not asking me to be like totally sexist. You're just asking me to be like when that guy when somebody goes. Hey Man Said something about your wife like not. Even there wasn't even the content. Aj Styles just could've looked at undertaker to make this work right in a more on opera. Aj styles could have just looked at the undertaker and gone wise. Last you know and then like maybe maybe wife Guy Cool. He could have done that and that would have been enough right you borrow. Why ask toward the end of this match? When it was clear taker was close to finishing him. Off As part of the one hundred percent On the fly dialogue he says to. Aj something about my wife now right right like a graveyard shed yes and by the way like other fantastic touches of light classic more on opera wants. Aj Styles had his ask good and beat. What did he do? I'll have sorry sorry berry great warble in there. I know like ish should be said by the way when the wwe went theatrical. I should say this I love. Aj without irony. No he's he's like he's great. He's been one of the best wrestlers period for the best. What fifteen years? He's been an excellent performer. And he's so good at dry humor and just saying fucking thing and somehow it's hilarious. Yeah like he is inherently funny to listen to in certain contexts and he killed this by the way takes talent to pull this off right. In order to sell it taker. Can I tell you how cool it was actually here taker? You never hear ticker right and I. I've hated his bid for the last ten to fifteen years. Because it's so slow is so theatrical. There's no I'm just supposed to accept the credit given for being undertaker and I don't really work like that right. I work if you have a mouth that you'd like if you're able to talk. Strike my favorite wrestler of all time. Jason you know my favorite wrestler of all time it's either Soda Ric Flair. It will be called. Yeah that's the one. I have the most emotional reaction to look as rich layer. Wants to be in the mansion and stone cold wants to burn the mansion and way more of a burn the Manson take the beer guy and the stone. Cold will always be my favorite wrestler. I don't really have control over how I react to him. In terms of appearances in the ring. And what I loved about taker. Is that you actually got a character. You got to hear him. You got to hear him. By the way undersell he's like what you on Like legit legit creepy. Also the the cinematic form where it does not need to be a constant live action in front of a crowd that is sitting there. You can hide the fact that take your can barely fucking walk like he can still cool and bad ass even though he will like openly admit he can barely can move. Yeah if you if you stuck around by the way after par to Wrestlemainia the first thing that they went to was the wwe networks documentary on undertaker. Which is intriguing by the way that like like if you if you watch the network which paved the free free trial you got about three weeks. Right GO AHEAD. Knock yourself out. What's the undertaker documentary? His training routine for the better part of fifteen years now has been. I do wrestlemainia. I go get a bunch of surgeries and then I start preparing for Wrestlemania next year. Yeah Yeah so we had. I think you had the two extremes of how to do this kind of cinematic storytelling like you had one where good guy kills bad guy right and it was like heavy on. They're just barking. Whatever comes into their minds at each other and it's largely about the stunts and then you had the other where there was basically one move completely scripted from the very beginning. No difficulty at all. But it's all about like are the two of us sat down and we wrote draft after draft draft to refine all this and we've got it to the point. Where like Sina Mr Superman? All America is believably. The Bad Guy. Anti is evil demented clown believably. The good guy rightly the two extremes of storytelling and and by the way not only like brilliantly constructed and like legit art at that point in best sense of the word an entertainment also acted their asses off. I know Seena I mean everybody knows. Sina is a really really good actor and has proven it you know. Like if you have not seen trainwreck. Train wrecks Johnson is the funniest part of that movie right. Tina fey one or no. That's the that would be a that would be the one about the people who had the party right Which I can't remember. He's also very funny in. That has very very very dyed. Black hair in trainwreck. He plays amy. Schumer is boy is clearly gay and and says things like hey buddy kick your ass almas that ass around down with oil it says it and really threatening ways yes as it like really threatening ways but saying these very light very elaborate. Come on lines. Two other men like that. And does it by the way without being like Ha? Ha You know homophobia no no. You're just like Oh this guy's got a problem. Yeah it's more like he clearly does not realize this about himself. Yeah Yeah like a complete and sells the oblivious nece right and Sina by the way sold like self doubt and like a real crumbling of the psyche as he realized he had made a deal with the devil. Because that's the core can see here right. John John a demon shows John Cena that he has made a deal with the devil. And there's a point where the end where They take seen back to his his his freestyle. Rapper Gimmick which gosh that takes a while to explain. Doesn't it but anyway scene of a wrapping wrestler for. Awhile and like it is very awkward to square this dude who had just make like really mean sex jokes about his opponents and then immediately go spend the next six days. Granting make a wish visits for kids right like is this really the same person you know and why it gives you an he says literally you have the floor. You have one more chance basically to say something nice and seeing a dozen other dis nuts joke and then it's like okay. Well you've learned nothing you will not be destroyed But like ultimately the story they are telling is one of like you have to go through this dark night of the soul in order to be in order to become something better. And that's like the story. They're telling with the fiend which is like you know he faced Daniel Bryan. Daniel brand goes from being a longhaired villain. Back to being a short haired guy and I don't think the hair length is really integral to it but it's it just signals the immediate character change where were or the that that character to themselves. Which is this is like going way. Way Way Down said Rob Hall. It's an admission that WWe screwed up character yet is now is a great character and Bray. Why by having him.
Christina Hendricks, 'Good Girls'
"I hope everybody. I'm Peter Travers. In welcome to popcorn where we tell you what is popping in pop culture and. I know you're all excited to know that good girls is back for season. Three on NBC. And it's good luck to have one of the stars of Chuck Andrex. It's great to see you again. Nice to see you. Thanks for having me season three. So what kind of trouble are you women in this time? I'm a lot more. I some reason I root for these women. I know there are up to no good. But they're fun and they're relatable so people kind of have their back there like I'd do it. How do you know? And they've got this real inner it's it's the camaraderie with these women. It's just fun to watch them. Make these horrible mistakes. Is that how you felt when you were first? Approached about doing the series. You know when you when you come from a show that you've been on for almost a decade your next your next choice you you have one follow madman. Well you gotta think something. I would really want to do every day because I may be doing it for ten years. I know what that's like. You know so. You really want to choose something that you could imagine doing. And I thought I want to work with these women and I want to go on this wild caper. It just seemed like such a laugh and so weird and different and it's also very intense so I do you know I didn't sort of consider like a well. I'm going to be incredibly stressed out every day and this high anxiety level and the stakes are really high. Of course you have to play all that you know so. It's kind of exhausting. But what if and now? I'm assuming that you and men ready get along really well. We did from the beginning we did. I knew may casually we had done some Animated things together so met each other through that I had never met Reta I in fact called. May and I said you know I'm thinking about doing this. Show I I hear. You're doing it what he thinks she's like. I think it's going to be the best thing ever and we just like hit it off like house on fire. When we all met and here we are three seasons. And that's we know each other so well we can order lunch for each other in the other person's around we're like no no no. Do not put tomatoes on reticent. Please send it back. We can't deal with it We all know each other and we and we know how we react to things and we sort take care of each other well. It sounds like you know I'm making light of it but to be on a series where you work long days. Yeah so you. It's good if you get along. It's amazing and because we are playing these really stressful intense scenes to have people that you love so dearly to laugh inbetween takes you know. Make the day lighter. It just changes everything. 'cause you're right we're there for fourteen hours a day and and You know it's it's nice to have like comfort him between and just get pissed off together and be happy when something is really making you angry. Oh Yeah we've got each other's back if something's upsetting the other. Were like yeah. Yeah what she said. Yeah we're team because we're scary you know and you could. You could do that. You know your director and Toy Story. Four where you were doing the voice of. Gabby Gabby I read a quote from Him Josh. Cooling where he said There's the thing about Cristina where she has this very sweet affect and an a sweet voice and then she can turn on a dime and being medicine and cold. We're just that calm and we did have fun playing with that. I mean the sweeter the croupier right. I don't know I. I ended up playing a lot of characters that have that dichotomy that they have come across as an innocent. But there's this underlying thing to drive to firefly. I think it started with firefly's the first time I had a character like that. And maybe maybe maybe one lead to another. Maybe when they opened a script they thought now. Who can do this? You Know Christina Hendricks this are doing on firefly so maybe one led to the other. Because I don't think I'm duplicitous. That's my own personality. Christina can do cold and creepy short she can go to increase drake's he's ready to do it for those people that are having caught up yet or just beginning to catch up with good girls. Who were you playing describe this? I play your typical midwestern. Mother middle class hardworking organized but found herself sort of on autopilot and lost maybe sight of her dreams or what her needs were and each cheating on her she found her husband is cheating on her lured that Matt Lillard just so great And then my sister who's a single mother is struggling to keep her child protected and safe and in school and my best friend has a daughter with an illness. And so we all find ourselves in this place where we need money to sort of take care of our families and keep roofs over their head and we. We decided that the best logical solution is to rob a grocery store. And we'll go and get the money Jill with all of our problems and go on our on our way But of course one thing leads to another and we fall into life of crime and it's a quirky

Yeah go ahead well. Yeah so I mean these guys are just clearly the butterflies happy overlapping some dangerous people. Yes that's the theory. Yeah well according to authorities he also had a head injury indicted drowning. He'd been missing for a few weeks. Yes the theory is that they were like their conservation is on an area where illegal logging which I don't know if that's like cutting down trees or whatever is going on possibly legally yes. They're saying criminals they. They probably rubbed shoulders with criminals. The wrong way logging taking dumpsite that or or the the butterflies could be revolting. This is something that we could we could keep an eye on Gomez was as a manager the second guy and his manager of the thing and his nickname was the defender of the Monarch Butterfly. which a cool that's according to the defender of self apparently if you get in the way of deforestation but for profit you get fucked fucked up you get killed you get blunt trauma to the head and dumped something water reserve? That's kind of what that firefly's star is about big big big deforestation's a big big instrument show Akon State is a sixty two miles outside of Mexico City so it's close to Mexico City. That's that's a lot of varieties firefly's all of them They light up but night and make kids smile. When the kids chased the firefly's get them into the jars and stuff did will most of us got them into jars? It's not west though. I used to smush him to to you know. Get the excrement out of him. Hit Him with rackets sometimes but was when I was at this is when I was very very young or talking about this story before we gotta do this bullshit. Sounds like you liked to smash them a lot but I saw ah what they would look like every time doing it. You GotTa collected if you WanNa paint something with it. Well that's the innards doing little Hash Ashmore Zone. Is Our cave like the Predator. Yeah I've got. I've gotten a terrible news for firefly hunter wes. Because because it turns out that firefly's all over the globe are on track for extinction that's true this is according to the journal Bioscience. They warn that. Not only firefighters populations descending worldwide. But they're going to keep going down as long as three. Things continue to destroy their mating habits. The three things are which I don't think they're gonNA stop West Habitat Loss. So the losing forests and swamps because they're converted for farming and construction the light pollution. So that's you know we're not going to have fewer lights anytime soon and pesticide use which everybody uses pesticides to make sure that you get more crops APPs. Oh seems like basically firefly's are just going to be extinct at some point sad that is like a very rite of passage childhood. Yeah thing but do you feel pretty good about that West. It's been thirty years since I've smoked a firefly been waiting for this firefly's put in motion. I thoroughly enjoy them now. Yeah I mean like he's got to be mad. Yeah so that's pretty much all it's going on This is one of the few papers that exists on firefly reproduction though. So don't take it like it's not like the end all be all but it definitely seems like firefly Firefly's are not doing well and they're hoping to bring awareness to the issue similar to the B people you're talking about the the the bees and everything everybody wants to keep bees and and firefly's around. It's just it seems like all the shit that kills them is like stuff humans do. What's next is on lemonade? Nice going to get extinct. Yeah this is bullshit. It'd be terrible. killed a lot of bees and Hornets in my day to so okay. Keep Your Valentine's Day tip one. Not all rose. Bouquets are created equal..

"That. Was it the answer to her annoying suitor problem. She'd ask them to bring a fire that matched her own. For many of the bugs. It would be an impossible task but the ones who were wise would know that it and the ones who weren't wise well she didn't WanNa marry them anyway. She wasn't sure she wanted to marry anyone just yet but she certainly didn't want to settle for anyone less than perfect so when the mosquito came buzzing up to her and called in his wine e voice she was ready for him. Greetings my my queen. He said you are so sweet. Please Mary me well. Will the firefly Queens said in her stately way. My true love should have a fire to match my own. So I'm sorry I don't think you're all right. Let me see if I can get a fire for my queen. Careful aw cautioned the queen. I don't think you're my true love. You could hurt yourself. No you'll see the mosquito said and buzzed off right away to search. He was feeling lucky because he remembered seeing fire not two nights before it had been in a human home home on the tip of a melting white pillar. He'd seen it when he was having a little snack and it seemed like they had dozens. He flew out as fast as he could hood and soon arrived at the human house inside. He could see not one but many white pillars all with dancing tongues of flame. They there were candles even if the mosquito didn't know it and they weren't the sharing type the little bug cried plunging ahead for my queens. He flew right into the nearest candle. Flame cinching his wings and spinning out of Control. Roll my he cried as he crashed to the ground when he recovered he realized the Queen in had given him an impossible task and also warned him that he probably wasn't her true love she probably just wanted to be left alone. He buzzed away. Singed singed but wiser back on her peony thrown the firefly queen was already being hounded again. Good Evening Milady. Called the moth woods. Thou perchance grant me a nice guy thine hand in marriage. I'm sorry replied the Queen. My I true love. We'll have a fire to match my own. I'm afraid you don't seem to have the glow about you. Milady he despaired. Give me a chance. I I will fetch a fire. Worthy of Thou Thou Stein beauty the queenside her own light flickering in annoyance. I I don't think that's a good idea. The moth drops to his knees pleading hands clasped before him. Oh Your Majesty. Please just give me trans. I'm a nice guy. Oh I guess. Huzzah Huzzah you won't regret this. He said and then he was off bumping along on his fuzzy wings he flopped for half the night but finally spotted a lantern hanging from the side of a wagon. The sides were frosted. Glass Asan flame flickered within a HA- fire former lady. He said fluttering furiously for the quitting. He slapped into the side of the lantern his wing sticking to the glass for a moment and then peeling away my queen. He said Groggily as he crashed to the ground and when he recovered he realized the Queen had given him an impossible task and also a warning and probably just wanted to be left alone. He buzzed away away. Sore but wiser back on her peony thrown to the queen was dealing with yet another pushy suitor the mob iota. The fall la the beadle hollered. Let's you and me getting married. I WanNa take you home to meet my ma. I don't think so said the Queen in my true love will have a fire to match my own. Please just let me look for someone like that. You WanNA fire. I'll get you some flames. Babe the Queen started to argue but the beetle was already gone buzzing away on his bummbly wings he wove eagerly through the night and soon found a group of hunters among the trees. They were sitting in a circle holding sticks of meet the sticks were hanging roasting over a crackling fire. We're here we go king beetle coming at Ya. He said diving into the flames for a second. He began to glow bright and sheared to himself. He had it he had a glow. Suddenly he had a terrible realization. He wasn't glowing. It was just that his wings were on fire. Oh no kidding going. He cried tumbling out of the fire and into the dirt when he he recovered he realized the Queen had given him an impossible task and probably just wanted to be left alone. He buzzed away wingless but wiser back on her any thrown a new suitor pushed his way through the rest firefly clean he said gently. I've heard stories of your beautiful glow. They are good stories but aglow such as yours could never be captured with words. That's kind of you to say she said and then she took a look at this suitor. This new bug was beautiful. Those beady black eyes those fuzzy red spots. They were lovely and familiar. Oh Wow the queen. Thought I think it's another firefly you seem nice enough. She said cautiously but my true love will have a fire to match my own others have tried to go in search of one but it doesn't seem to work out well so I don't think I should tell you to go do that. Well I don't I don't need to search. He said in my own meadow I am called the firefly Prince and I have brought the fire with me and I also bring it everywhere I go. He turned and his back began to glow brighter and brighter. It swelled until burned as bright as the queen's the peony thrown was a shine blazing like a beacon in the night. Finally she had found a fire to match her own. Though the Queen knew she had many questions to ask at a lot to learn about this firefly prince she also knew this her search which was over he was the one and she was right in time the firefly queen and the firefly prince now known as the firefly king fell in love and were married there. Two fires became one raging light and they lived happily and brightly ever after. That didn't stop the other suitors from trying though. That's why to this very day. Who Would Win Dracula vs Cyborg
"Could not be more excited about this particular match up you know we talk about what I want to see out of battles me this Guy Ray I wanna see Contra asked of styles I wanna see to roughly matched characters fighting each other who aren't exactly the same we've talked before on this show many times sick and tired of the pedantic Green Arrow versus Hawkeye battle I'll always go back to his just who cares they're both the same dude yawn yawn bar Searle Wretch I'm over it what I wanna see is an ancient Vampire Count Dracula versus the cybernetic hero from the future org these are two class of styles but still very very compelling as a match up the this matchup reminds me of the first. UFC days where you would have you know the karate master versus the Kung Fu master or the jets jitsu versus the shoot fighter this one each of these characters clearly stays within their lane Cyborg doesn't dabble in the supernatural and I really don't think Dracula kind of goes over to the technological outside either I don't think he's ordering stuff on Amazon now that's he's definitely not neuberger either no no no no now to kind of help us with this debate we needed the think outside the box for judges and ray you had a great suggestion to bring someone in who when you think of contracting styles you think if someone who can kind of wrap their heads around the cultural impact of each character you brought up someone's name why thought was absolutely genius you can you can go ahead and Gush your guts out because what you're trying to say here's we needed somebody a little smarter for this episode and that's what I got for you definitely smarter than you and I and I think that's exactly what we got it's not saying it's not I know I I'm not saying doc I'm just not saying that you're smart and joining us in an amazing amazing actor comedian and voice over artists is Rama Blurry rumour accused of being on the show thank you for having me I didn't realize I was GONNA get buttered up so quickly at the beginning of the show well of course we're getting buttered up by James He wants something from you Aka Torri in this battle are you saying you don't want anything from me right I'm just saying I'll deserve it when I get it okay so you're willing to accept whatever my judgment is by the end I'm fact you look great today that out very very attractive man really James when I said let's bring someone smart maybe even genius intellect in the studio it wasn't actually needing for the person to be so gosh darn handsome but here we are well here we are and I'm I'm already tallying in my head I can't tell you who's winning this flatter off yet yet rabbi they'll tell you I I gotTa Tell You you're very successful active done a lot with your voice over career you're in a number of nationally and internationally syndicated commercials correct you know for different companies you're absolutely amazing I'm GonNa just ask you the question everyone else's thinking right now how are you friends with Ray I appeared on another podcast of raise knowing is half the podcast a great show that rates show and I linked to the three people on that show yeah it was here breath with the fabulous Mr Clark Chan and everyone's friend Eileen Eileen Mary O'CONNELL judge the muppets versus sesame street battle on the WHO would win six one of our favorites yep so I met I met Ray there and was wild by his podcasting acumen but also his passion for purely obscured or pop cultural Ephemera so when he asked if I would do this I said yes and then when he told me what the battle was I said Oh hell yeah very cool so what is your experience within geek culture because very often we have judges that have such a great background to them that we sometimes forget to say like hey by the a sheer he really is into this because they were they do how are you into Geek culture well first off I wear glasses so that got me eh into it very early I read compulsively I just finished my eighth book of the year and the year of the year and that includes graphic novel doesn't things some recommended to me by Mr Clark Chan I consume a lot of media and between the written word art nick cartoons as voiceover guy doing cartoons and video games and things I'm paying attention to everything going on because this is a fun visit a fun learning lesson for anybody who wants to do voices if you do impressions and I do a lot of impressions you have to realize that if you do a bad impression it becomes a character but if you do a good impression understand somebody else might do it too so the key example is this Alan tutic everybody loves Allen to one of the most underrated absolutely Kazan firefly's amazing he's easing everything death at a funeral he was one of my favorite parts of that he took the voice of Ed Wynn Vaudeville performer win famously in Mary poppins the laughing uncle off the table forever now I loved I loved doing this man's voice it was just so much on yet we're still in the middle of Shock Tober James you've been having a very shall we say successful shock Tober so far I have I've I'd like to say that I had to work really hard to get to wins in the month of shocked over the reality is I did not have to work that hard at all I didn't even research either character I just came to the show because you are a liar who was filled with lies actually researched the hell out of I hope I can say that in shock to over the heck out of both characters they were close matches by the a ray did will was there and I somehow pulled out the victory for both so I am in in crisis mode right now because I love this matchup I love Dracula vs Cyborg and look I cannot allow Cyborg to win this battle the idea that I could be facing a skunk for the entire month of shocked HCT sickens and appalls me in I'm not trying to influence your decision in any way Rama you still have to make the right decision you still have to make the right decision for you and family well see here's the thing ray as the impartial judge here I have to rule with my mind and not with my heart so you're pleading as moving may be as heartbreaking as it may be that you are putting up a goose egg this month I can't promise you a victory I can't I have to listen to the facts argued I want is for you to hear arguments and make the correct decision that's all if if every judge did that I would have a ninety five percent win percentage on the show well I gotTa Tell You James Your silence so far in your willingness to just plead the facts and all this is going to be a very dragnet performance I'm interested in just the facts ray all right just the fact enough all right well then let's waste no more time reduce the honors and announced as matchup representing the DC universe the manso metal he irons his clothes with his but cyborg doc and representing the Marvel Universe the count who will dig through the ditches burn through the witches and slamming the back of my dracula thank you okay I'll make a note about it we'll make a note about it before we go any further let's go over the official rules about who would win matched I roll number one each debater will be able to make three points rule number two the WHO would win matches a random encounter in neutral location with neither combatant necessarily knowing anything about their opponent or having any time to prepare part will number three the exact version the character has to be specifically stated so rare which version of Dracula you're using this is such a tough decision there are so many iterations of dragon in this world but I felt that since you assuredly are taking comic book version of Cyborg it would behoove me to take the powers feats and whatnot of the a six one six Marvel Marvel version of dracula gay that kind of scares me a little bit because that's in my opinion the most powerful form DRACULA in popular culture so it's Kinda what's being known as what People Know About Dracula these days I felt anymore right that's true okay well I will be using when did it become a New Yorker right now are you filled with a certain level of bombast when you get to the Mike you lean in and then you start projecting on Amazon by Taibbi and Hashtag who would win rate please give us the DETAILS ON DRACULA COUNT DRACULA is a powerful vampire who first appeared in the eighteen ninety seven brands Tokar Novel Dracula. Today's version of this iconic character is the marvel iteration who first appeared in historical suspense number seven in Nineteen fifty one then was rebooted in Tomb of Dracula number one in nineteen seventy two the newer version was made by Gerry Conway as well as Gene COLAN DRACULA'S PERHAPS THE MOST famous vampire of all time sorry twilight kids owing to the era a free to use characters in Comic Books Dracula makes her a formidable monster or overlord ending on the needs of the Story Dracula has a host of vampiric abilities including

"Tweet at scifi saifi. You know the firefly's glowing at night seemed like a pretty big target doctor lower i mean why would you advertiser present to other predators at nighttime like that and do they have natural predators. There would like to eat them so they do have natural predators. There's <hes> they have <hes>. Actually there's a particular group of firefly's called fraternities that will prey upon the males of other species so females females of the group of firefly's for tourists are called fem fatalities neil actually mimic the flash signals of a prey species to lure males in and eat them mm-hmm and we think they do this to acquire toxins from the pray that they can then put into their own eggs to protect those larvae from predation other <hes> <hes> organisms that really like fireflies are spiders so wolf spiders <hes> all sorts of spiders that you go out in the field and you you see <hes> firefly's stuck in webs a lot. I didn't know that that's quite interesting. Dr louis the the common traits of firefly's is not that the adults glow oh but that the larva glow in every species why would a larva need to glow yeah so it's really interesting. You know people wonder sure why we call. The firefly's don't light up at all during their adult lives. Why are we still call them firefly's. You've just provided the answer. Which is that well. They're genetically related in in all juvenile. Firefly's can light up so even as juveniles those firefly's light up they lose that ability once they become adults other firefly's keep that ability when they're adults and so this is actually a really cool thing that firefly scientists have discovered just in the past twenty years is is how firefly's actually make their light and how they control their light and where it came from the beginning and so we've discovered that firefly's is first firefly's lay producing talent. I evolved in that juvenile stage. That sarah was talking about ones that live underground. They spent a long time in that juvenile stage and imagine being a soft bodied little kind of grub like thing that lives down in the soil. How how are you going to advertise that. You're toxic so we know that the juvenile's contain nasty tasting chemicals. How do you advertise those chemicals. If it's dark mark and you can't have like the classic warning colors of orange and black and red we see in the daylight world so we think that firefly larvae irby's evolved their ability to make light bioluminescence as a warning signal. It's a it's a highly visible sign that day originally used to warn off predators saying hey i'm toxic. You don't wanna eat me that is gone. That's kind of interesting but it also answers a question. I've had many years ago. Ah i know a scientist who many years ago <hes> was attempting to make <hes> shark repellent at a firefly lanterns is is it is it because because of that nasty tasting chemical that you talk about that might be suspected of being a good shark repellent it could be. I really don't know the the nasty. Tasting chemical ali is yeah. It's called lou buffet. Gin and sarah said it's one of the things that that wards off most predators like birds will not eat firefly's toge don't eat firefly's lizards firefly's and so it's possible ward off sharks. I doubt that evolved for that reason. Though let's go to the phones let's go to joe oh in phoenix hijo. Hi how's it going go ahead. Okay so a few years ago. I was in hollywood behind the hollywood bowl aw up in the hollywood hills and that was very attentively listening to a radiohead concert. Look down on the ground and what i thought was like a glow. Oh bracelet or the end of a glow bracelet was a glow worm. It was green the very tip of it was glowing green and i i know we don't have glow bugs in or at least <hes> firefly's in california on hollywood but was a glow worm. So what was it okay. Let me let me be. Thanks for the question. Let me bring a tweet in an they asked the same question. Maybe we can do to for one aaron tweets by family and i recently saw desert firefly glow arms at the north rim of the grand canyon quite a surprise as we had always understood that firefly's lived east of the continental divide sarah..

How Fireflies Survive
"Summer nights, the lights firefly's are beautiful and they're flashes. Help him attract mates. I wonder though, wouldn't those same flashes of light also helped predators? Home in on a tasty snack. Some animals are carefully camouflaged. Predators can't see them. But you're right on others. Stand out prominently firefly's are one example of a prominent animal monarch butterflies another monarch butterflies taste awful. And a poisonous their bright, orange colour works to warn birds and other predators away from a very unpleasant experience are firefly's poisonous to you guessed it. They are predators show intensive IRS into them some die within hours of eating firefly's in a twenty eighteen study American researchers reported that that showed intense of versions of the Beatles. Always spitting them out coughing and shaking their heads. But. That's why bats bats are one of the most important predators of night, active insects. Everybody knows that bats use sonar echo-location defined insect prey in the darkness of the night could firefly light. Classes really warned them away like the monarchs colors do for birds. That's can also see researchers didn't experiment test the role that vision and echo-location play in bats detection of firefly's. They exposed bats to groups of firefly's one group was normal in the other firefly's were darkened by having their bio luminescent organs covered over with paint. The bats could learn to avoid either group of firefly's, but they learn faster with normal than with darkened, firefly's vision and echo location worked together to help bats. Void the unpleasant mistake of eating firefly his moment of science come from Indiana University. I'm Don glass, I'm ya'll Cassandra.
Inhaled RNA Might Help Heal CF
"This is science Americans sixty seconds science. I'm Christopher Dodd Yata. Genome is sorta like a library with each gene and instruction manual for making proteins, the bad news is you can't return a book and take out a new edition. But the technique of gene therapy allows you to revise your copy of the book, so to speak giving you the ability potentially to make new in different proteins now scientists have experimented with a new way to make text revisions by inhaling the changes they tested the concept by having mice breathe in genetic material called messenger. Aren a or m Aren a for the test. The Amarna included instructions to manufacture Luciferian the stuff that lights up in firefly's. The researchers packaged the Marna with a degradable polymer to trick the mices lung cells into accepting the package, and once the cells gobbled it up they began to glow proving that inhaling 'em are in as an effective way to kick. Start the production of new. New novel proteins like the firefly enzyme. The scientists also repeated the experiment in mice who sells had been genetically engineered to turn permanently read if they received a copy of MR in a making it possible to count the proportion of cells affected by a dose. The proof of concept is in the journal advanced materials, of course, the point of all this isn't to make mice glow. Instead one idea is to use this technique to help cystic fibrosis patients because people with CF have genetic mutation that causes a build up of sticky mucus in their lungs. Several of the study authors work with publicly traded biotech company called translate bio and that companies conducting phase one in two trials to determine if inhaling messenger are in a could provide a genetic fix for cystic fibrosis, regardless of the particular case of CF, the Luciferian example shows that inhalation genetic therapy could be an inspiration. Thanks for listening for scientific American sixty seconds science. I'm Christopher Don. Yada.
Sally Field on a lifetime in Hollywood
"Today, we listen back to the also winning actress Sally field the minute. I walked on stayed something. Struck me electricity, a bell rang, and the self-imposed fog that I had been living in just cleared, and I could hear myself, and I was alive for this moment for the second. I was free and weightless I spent my life chasing, the firefly's on the edges of my is. That was Sally field. The double Oscar winning actress and the fog she was escaping descended following sexual abuse. By a stepfather jock Mahoney when she was a child she lost herself in acting career began as a teenager playing the all American lead in gidget. She went on to star in the flying nun, and then made her first film the way west with Kirk Douglas in nineteen sixty seven a host of television movies, followed before she joined her then boyfriend, but Reynolds in the box office hit smokey and the bandit Reynolds was another controlling man in her life. As was the film director, Bob Raffelson's. She was forced to kiss before being cast by him in stay hungry. She won her first Askar for the title role of Numa Ray in nineteen eighty and she's appeared in amongst others. Steel magnolias, MRs Doubtfire and Forrest Gump winning another best actress Academy Award for places in the heart in one thousand nine hundred five she was given an outstanding lead. Actress EMMY for television show. Brothers and sisters and most recently was nominated for best actress in Lincoln in two thousand and twelve she's written a memoir in pieces. I'm Georgina Godwin, and I sat down with her in the big interview. Sally. We're here in London. And you've been hit promoting your book, which is an extraordinary book. It's about this amazing life full of experience, but also Chuma to degree a wonderfully brave book, but it also charts your acting career, and I wondered if you'd always known that you were going to act well by the time, you know, you're thinking about what are you going to be when you grow up kind of thought, I think it was always an actor.

"Dive this week at age of fifty seven. What a lot of people. Don't know. Is this dude had a couple of different degrees? He graduated from Humboldt state university eighty four with a bachelor's degree in natural resource planning and interpretation. He was working at Orange County marine institute. He got the idea that he wanted to start doing some animation. So he went back and say, hey, you know, what I was good another degree in eighty seven. He pursued his degree in experimental animation. At the California is to arts in Valencia and he earned his masters of fine arts ninety two quite of accomplishment. I mean, the dude was very educated. You wouldn't think that watching SpongeBob squarepants? But yeah, I mean, he he had multiple degrees. And he invented SpongeBob squarepants for so. Rest in peace, Mr. hill and Berg and thank you for bringing SpongeBob squarepants to us. Everybody knows Netflix will make a TV series out of anything. Lately, they've been cancelled stuff. We're talking about that later, but they they don't make a series out of anything, and they just ordered some episodes for avatar last air bender. So they're getting more to the anime now of making those series. They just got another one man they picked up cowboy bebop, there'd be making live actually Dapitan of cabinet bebop. It says here there ordered for ten episodes straight to series live adaption, if you're not familiar with cabaret bebop is one of the more prominent enemies out there. These intergalactic bounty, hunters, basically, go around and save save your world for the right price. This could go well or this could go really really bad. Honestly, I've I've kind of liked the live actual life death note. And I liked full metal alchemist alive actions. I don't know a whole lot about Kabbay bebop. But I think they can make this work on a firefly kinda way. Can't wait to see what they do with this. They are making so many of these adaptions now, I don't have a date when this is going to be available for yet net. Flicks is go roll it out. And if they do they always do they'll be the whole ten episodes at once that you can marathon watch it, they'll probably be half hour episodes. So it shouldn't take long. You can do it in a weekend. Get your cabinet bebop fix along with the enemy if you're not familiar with it. Now's a great time to go back and wash the cowboy bebop anime and get caught up. And while we're on enemy this next one is it's it makes sense after I hear it. But I would have never thought of it beforehand dole swim and country, crunchy roll going together to make a blade runner anime. Yeah. I didn't think about, but you know, the whole Bladerunner story leads itself. Very well. The anime in my mind, this Disney the away who. Is the Bladerunner director guy. He is said they optioned. Three stories that were take place between twenty nineteen when the regional Bladerunner takes place and Bladerunner twenty four nine which is the newest movie they put out. One of these was done by Mr. Watanabe. It's Bladerunner twenty twenty two. Blue's called blackout. I watched it a little earlier. It's it's really not bad it. It was pretty good. So those three stories if you Google I'm sure you can find somewhere online this anime series, though is going to be called Bladerunner black Lotus takes place in twenty thirty two. So it's before the events of twenty forty nine you're likely to see some of the characters, you know, making appearances in this anime, which is really cool. Like, I said shoot Chiro what Nabi I'm probably butchering. The name is going to be the creative producer on this series. Guy is great with anime. Can't wait. The Bladerunner story is just I love the whole Bladerunner universe. They had said that they were going to be expanding the blade runner universe. And we haven't seen that. Until now. I mean, they did a comic book that just didn't really take off. We haven't seen any television or or animates until this one. There will be thirteen half hour episodes. They're going Erla dole swim adults rooms going to maintain the worldwide distribution rights for the English dub versions, which means in my mind means they're looking at pushing it out in other countries. Also. So, you know, the Bladerunner universe is getting ready to expand. Again, we're going to be a little more backstory since this is kind of a prequel to twenty four nine but a sequel to twenty nineteen. Kind of weird in the time line there. I believe what Nabis going to do a job with this. I can't wait to see it myself. I love all the Bladerunner stuff. So let's hope that they do this from Justice. It seems lately the trend is for them to take old

"Halloween. Just happened this past week. So of course, everything's going Christmas. There were skipping right past thanksgiving. Netflix has a show coming up called the Christmas chronicles going to be starring Kurt Russell as Santa Claus this premise, it's not a new idea Santa's so used to stay up to try to catch Santa. They actually do catch him the kind of hideaway in his sleigh. And they cause an activist. So the sleigh is wrecked. And they are in jeopardy of not having Christmas presents for everybody by Christmas morning. So of course, Santa uses his Christmas. Magic calls on his elves and his reindeer, and they are able to. I'm sure deliver everything by Christmas morning because it looks like it's going to be a kid show and got to end on a happy note. I looked at the trailer. Trae looks cute. It's something I'll probably watch it. It'll probably be a yearly thing around Christmas. Now. Kurt. Russell is great actor love everything. He's in just about so Christmas carnivals on. Netflix comes out November twenty second day after thanksgiving market on Gallinger, the aero versus having their fall crossover. They're going to bring in a ton. They're announcing a ton of characters are going to be introduced I've already told you guys about ruby rose being bad woman. They're bringing in psycho, pirate a. He used to be a third tier type character. He's god. He he has Medusa mask where he's able to affect your motions. And he's almost like a motion vampire, he can suck your emotions away from you the bringing him in the one I'm really really excited about though is monitor they're going to be bringing in monitor. He was born on one of the moons of owa, you know, from green lantern says the their base of operation, but there's also an anti monitor who deals with anti energy. And he goes around, basically suck and all the energy out of planets in in places and destroying them. Monitor is the opposite. He's he tries to save all these places. I there's no word on whether they're going to have Lila the orphaned, girl, he rescued in. She became a blue harbor jer on of his sidekicks, but they have shown monitor and Marv Wolfman has said that it's a very close adaption to what he wanted in the comics. He's really excited about it. So if the creators excited about it, I'm excited about it. So not only are we going to be introduced to bat woman and monitor psycho pirate. Ross it'll have lowest lane will be introduced Stephen Mellon green guessing are going to be kind of switching roles trigger twins loan. You know, one's green arrow once flashed or kind of going to swap as part of this else. World's crossover is they're doing a lot for this spoils crossover. It's probably going to gather a lot. Attention on a lot of people going to watch. It is going to start on flash December night at eight PM eastern time and continued through on arrow to December tenth APM an end with supergirl December eleventh at eight PM also in the vein of DC comics bat, girl, bird, Berta, pray. We've been telling you about that movie. Lots of great casting for that. We have another update they're bringing in the big villains. That'd be black mask, and they have cast Ewan McGregor to be black mask. He started out as a Batman villain. He's a nother rich guy from GOP him. But he went the opposite way. His batman. He became one of the crime lords. He's used his money and influence to create the false faces society and kind of rule Gotham 's criminal underground for quite some time. He pops up every now, and then and Batman now they're bringing him in bad, girl and birds of prey you McGregor. Great actor. I think he'll do a great job on black mask all union ten does. Switch owners. I know the biggest gripe than tend to switch guys have is. There's not a lot of apps being developed for it right now. That's changing they are going to put out a YouTube app. Sometime next couple of weeks for ten to switch. So you'll at least be able to pull up YouTube videos and watch on the switch since Google owns YouTube. You can bed this not going to be much longer until they have the Google browser. Ready for Nintendo, switch also. So just be patient guys. They are developing apps from the intendo switch. It's it's a popular gaming network not going anywhere shifts going to get bigger. So you early adopters just gonna have to bide your time. But you are getting a YouTube app in the next couple of weeks. We are used to seeing crossovers in comics and even on TV shows like arrow verse I told you earlier in movies even. I this is a new one to me. It's it may have happened before. I don't remember anything like this board game crossover. They're going to have a board game with two licenses crossing over. Stay with me on this one men in black and Ghostbusters. They're crossing over to make a game called Minna black slash Ghostbusters echo, echo, terrestrial invasion. The artwork on this. Looks kind of cool. It's kind of anime ish. Kitty, looking type of artwork the game is these eco terrestrial are invading earth. And it's taking it's more than either black or Ghostbusters can handle on their own. So they're teaming up to take out these invaders. They also plan on having a couple of standalone expansions coming from this also probably with the Minna black and Ghostbusters by themselves. So on your ghostbuster team. You're gonna have Bank men Spangler stands and said more the Minna black team is going to have agent j agent k agent L and said, those are the ones that we know of right now, they the standalone that are coming following auditees may add other characters, but those are probably there arguably the most popular character from each one of those licenses your men in black slash Ghostbusters echo, terrestrial invasion is slated to come out in late twenty nineteen. So you gotta ways to wait for this. But the follow on standalone expansions should be coming out shortly after those okay my action figure collectors. This is a extra figure. I didn't know if I'd ever see but Hasbro is putting out the six armed Spiderman. This comes from the story where expire man was trying to cure himself from having the spider powers. Did he must calculator wrong? Because it just increased his spider powers it caused him to grow additional arms. This six armed Spiderman is going to be a six inch action figures coming out early in twenty nineteen dark horse comics lately has lost a lot of their licenses. They I mean, they've lost Star Wars. They lost buffet a vampire slayer they lost firefly. They're still they're saying they're still doing well. But they did just make a huge sell of a lot of their stock in holdings. CEO and founder, Mike Richardson has said that he's doing this because they're gonna make a big push into films. They want to have their own funded films. I mean, we've seen how well marvel has done funding their own films having their own film studio darkhorse has a lot of great titles. That would translate great film. Also. It's always the problem of getting these films funded. So now, they have an inhouse film funding part of the business should make it easier. So I'm hoping that microchip knows what he's doing with this. And I hope darkhorse starts putting out some big blockbuster movies. And hopefully, the other comics publishers will start following suit and making their own funded films. K last story I have for you today. I thought this was really really interesting. If you've read heroes in crisis from DC comics, where they it was kind of a sanctuary for all these superheroes. And and villains who were having problems dealing with all the violence and everything else in their life. They were sent there as a for kind of therapy. Somebody found out about this place in came in and basically killed everybody that was at this sanctuary. The main culprits. Were Harley Quinn and booster gold. This sanctuary was run by the DC's. Big trinity of Batman wonder woman in superman, they are coming here to investigate what's going on. And of course, you know, it all the size point toward Harley and booster gold. The trinity tracked down Harley they're going to try to bring her in and question her. This is the part is interesting Harley walked through the trinity like they were nothing. She grabbed wonder woman's LASSO use it all Batman and found out the Batman using the LASSO found out he had a piece of kryptonite on him. She grad that piece of kryptonite and used it to get past superman. And then later on in one of the panels superman even mentions it, you know, Harley Quinn is as good if not better than even new Batman men didn't want admit it. He's got a big ego. But yeah, I mean, she just waltzed through the trio that three arguably strongest characters in the DC universe. Harley Quinn, just cake walked right through them and got away. So everybody who was always wondering why Harley was part of suicide squad. You know, how she could survive a little with joker all this time and all the violence if going on she can hold her own Harley Quinn. She is a top notch gymnast, obviously, she was a psychiatrist so she's not an idiot. She can think her way through a lot of these things and strategically and physically she just bested the three top characters in the DC universe. So if you ever you want to argue about who's the best fighter in DC. You can make a strong case for Harley. "Thanks. Enjoy the episode. The brilliant firefly revolt. Chapter seven, troubled waters. The chill waters of the Atlantic churned and thrashed in a violent blur. But Jill didn't slow. It had been two days since they'd found the lighthouse and the firefly suit was finally back in operation after a bear few hours of testing. Jill had set out to find her mother. Everything's looking good. So far, said specs in her ear, keep tight to the water, and none of the satellites will be able to pick you up. Copy that said, Jill twisting in tight barrel roll, and then leveling out like a fighter jet. She told herself she was just checking out the thrusters again, but really just felt so good to fly cutting through the air faster than sound controlled by the minute adjustments of her body. She felt like a bird not one of the little flirty ones that hung around her mother's bird feeders though she was the hawk that struck like a laser like grace and danger a weapon with feathers. She wanted to feel it to remove the helmet and let the wind roar past her face. Then again, at this speed, even a pebble would hit me like a bullet. She thought so helmet on it was you're coming up to your mother's tracker, signal spec said you should have a visual on wherever she is anymore. Minute. An icy hand gripped jill's heart. She had always been brave to a fault, really, but flying towards the scarlet kings secret base. She'd have to be crazy not to be a little scared. At least that's what she kept telling herself. No, turning back now. She thought, let's see what we're dealing with. She rose a little further above the waters, the yellow glow of the firefly jet, making the wave tips sparkle and shimmer going up. I think. I see. Oh, my goodness. Wow, specs agreed ahead. A monstrous island loomed into view. It was easily a mile across a nodded mass of red vegetation and sharp edged peaks of volcanic stone. The island was mostly overgrown, but through her enhanced vision, Jill saw several roads, cutting through like Brown scars, metal doors studied the dark stone in a few places. All of them sealed over everything. Draped like a heavy web was thick. Red Ivy Jill zoomed in and saw all the vegetation had the same brick like texture as the new supers- you seeing all the specs. Yeah, more brick can't be a coincidence. Right. The scarlet king is into some new kind of genetic engineering, whatever it is. It definitely goes way beyond just beating firefly, be careful jail. Sure thing. Gonna try to stay low. She dipped back down close to the water slowing to subsonic speed. She hadn't seen any guards, but it was best to be careful though. It was odd, wouldn't the scarlet king have some kind of defense system even if this place was invisible to satellites and radar. Someone could still happen upon it by accident, right, as if triggered by her thoughts, a piece of that red Ivy curled up and out of the water, Jill yelped and tried to dodge, but it slapped wetland against her ankle armor as she zipped by. That was weird. You see that specs specs started to reply, but it garbled too static, Jill side with frustration. They had theorized. The comms might fail like the satellites and radar. But Jill had been hoping they wouldn't on your own. Now she said to herself time to go get mom. Another piece of red Ivy whipped up in front of her this time. Time she managed to gracefully corkscrew around it, but then a second and third, lashed upwards as well. She burned one away with a blast from her fist, but the other slapped her hip and sent her into a tumble panicked. She managed to right herself just before splashing into the ocean. She hovered in place for a moment, getting her bearings, the firefly HUD flashed warnings about altitude and stability and enemies. Enemies in the water. Red tendrils of Ivy began to rise all around her ones longer and thicker than before they curled towards her. Moving with animal intelligence up close. Jill could see the tendrils were lined with jagged brick suckers. It wasn't Ivy at all. It was ten to Kohl's. No, Jill spat triggering her jets. She shot upwards just as a giant brick red mouth burst from the ocean beneath her. It was shark mouth easily thirty feet across deep as a grave..

"Seat. Jill smiles widely behind her hand. Specs had been working hard on his training and he was getting better a few months ago. He never would have made that catch specs, lay the Proteas on the terminal, and then started in when it flared back to life. So you said shark skin gave you some software? Yeah, he did. Jill said, she reached into her flight suit and pulled out the flash drive. Specs slotted into the machine and began to scan it what he was satisfied. It wasn't some kind of worm or virus. He started the install. You think this will work. Jill asked will know in a second spec, said launching the tracker, a new section of the window darkened and a large rectangle showing a live satellite view of the earth, missed it into view. It was beautiful. The entire world laid out flat overlaid with real time swirling clouds and crisscrossing flight patterns to Jill. It felt mystical and abstract. Advanced tech always had that sheen of magic to it. Can you find my mom signal, I think so shark skin gave us the serial numbers. I just have to punch them in specs typed for a moment. Jill couldn't help, but notice he was holding his breath. He pounded the enter key. The map hung still for a long moment and then to pinprick dots of light appeared. Yes, it works. Specs cheered fingers clattering over the keyboard. The screen split in half show. Showing zoomed view of both dots. One was in dig a city right over where jail herself was standing. The other was floating over the Atlantic Ocean. Literally, as far as Jill could tell from what the satellites were showing gills mom was hovering in mid air a few dozen feet over the choppy waters. Well, that can't be right. What's going on my don't know, said specs something about that patch of ocean. I can't get a better picture. What do you mean? It's like the satellites don't really look there. They pretend to, but it's just showing the surrounding ocean. Does this happen anywhere else? No, I think someone's hiding something I think so too. Maybe firefly should pay them a visit. Read my mind specs. Some of the window was occupied by the computer, but most was still clear jill's attention was drawn to a cluster of flashing reds and blues congregating a few streets away as she watched an arching line of police in riot gear advanced on a figure in red and black. It was another brick and it looked like it was one she hadn't seen yet. What did that make the count now? Six eight. She couldn't keep track. We can't help right now. Jill spec said, following her gaze, we need to fix the suit. I, we need to get back to work jail, looked over at the map, staring hard at that blinking dot somewhere out there in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Her mother was waiting a prisoner of the scarlet king. Was she okay? How is she being kept? Would firefly be able to save her? The only way to find out was to fly in blind and alone, or was it? She started off across the lighthouse her mind racing, Jill, Jill. What are you doing? Just what you said, specs, she replied pieces of the firefly armor clanging down on one of the metal benches. I'm getting back to work. To be continued. Today's story, the next installment of the brilliant firefly revolt was an original story written for you by Daniel Hynes and perform for you..

"She's not Asuka said the slender brick. Curiously Justice illegal. He turned towards the brute finish. The job, and let's get out of you. Silly girl. Jill thought grandpa, Jack had said that to maybe they were both, right. She was lying on the ground struggling even to breathe Jill. It was specs in her ear. You need to get up, please Jill. You need to get up. How long had he been talking? Jill shook her head, the big brick loomed over her now, a black bag. In one hand, Jill, I know you've got a lot on your mind, but I need you to move Jill. You gotta move the giants swiped at her, but she flinched away. He grunted and hit her again this time on the guy. Luckily she had some armor plating there and it didn't hurt nearly as bad as the first blow still, it's sent her spinning across the floor, crushing into shark skin and knocking them both over, come on kid with spurred shark skin. Is they untangled calling gramps already. He's the only one who. Stop these goons. Grandpa's dead. Jill, whispered back as she said it. She realized it was the first time she had admitted it out loud. She had cried to herself and told specs the story, but this felt different felt real something gave way inside her, tearing free, like a scab, all the hurt and pain. All the sadness that had been filling her body like trash in a barrel. It was suddenly too much. If you have gramps is dead that, so we whispered shark skin. The big brick grabbed her by the collar and threw her across the room. Again, this time, Jill barely felt it. It was all too much come on. Jill said, specs, think of your mom. Mom, if there was no firefly who would save her Jill couldn't think of anyone else. She suddenly realized that if she didn't find some fight in herself soon, her mom might not get rescued at all. I know I'm too angry grandpa. She thought, I'm sorry. And I'm sorry for what happened, but I needed to save those people. And now I need to save mom and myself. It may not be what you want me to do, but it is what you would have done. I love you. Grandpa. She said aloud, and somehow she was sure he heard it finish are already said the slender brick board tears welled in her eyes. And she felt that matchstick flare of anger. Scarlet king had taken her mom had sent goons to kidnap her or worse, didn't. He know that Jill was strong like her mother didn't. He know Jill was brilliant like her father didn't. He know Jill was wild, like her old grandpa, Jack, she pushed herself up from the dusty floor staggering to her feet and wiping a spot of blood from the corner of her mouth wild and dangerous that. Two. All right. Then she said, looking from one brick to the other and raising her hands, who's I? The giant brick roared spit flying from his craggy lips. Come on Jill roared back, ripping away her sweater and revealing pieces of the firefly armor wired along her black flight suit. The thruster was broken, but parts were still functional. Jill had assembled them on a lattice of metal bands, and she looked like half a skeleton in gleaming platinum firefly. She bellowed and around her like the inexorable gears of a ticking clock, like a flower blooming in fast motion the skeleton flare to life. To be continued. "Enjoy the episode. The brilliant firefly revolt. Chapter two, the will the way. Four aspirin to giant sandwiches and one shower later, Jill felt almost human again, not good. She wouldn't feel good again until she had her mom back, but definitely better than before she came down the stairs carefully toweling her hair specs was waiting at the kitchen table. He had a glass of chocolate milk by one elbow and was hacking away on his laptop. So any progress she asked taking the seat next to him and watching the lines of code March across the screen. The system was basically obliterated by the blast, but everything that mattered was backed up remotely. So do you think we can fix the suit? Sure. The repair schematics are right here. He said, and a picture of the firefly suit appeared on his screen as she watched it began to take itself apart piece by piece step by step at any other time. Jill would have found it magical to watch. Now, though she was just happy to have one problem solved. Schematics are good. What about the parts though? Most of this week in fixed, but the core of the thruster needs to be replaced in all of the spare parts, or either destroyed or buried the core is mainly used as the heart of big time missiles, strictly defense contractor stuff. So only define someone who can get and sell legal military tech to a couple of teenage civilians. Oh, that's no problem. How can that possibly not be a problem spec, said, turning from his screen. Remember I told you about my Grandpa's guy, shark skin grandpa told me he can get anything. What rings a bell spec, said, turning back to his computer and hacking away, shark skin, shark skin. Here we go. He pulled up a file on shark skin that grandpa must have put together. It had shark skins picture pages of personal info, a complex web chart of loyalties and dealings and a cell phone number. So you just give him a call. Specs asked dubiously IDO. Your grandpa would say, specs trailed off a hitch in his voice jail looked over and saw tears standing in his eyes. Gills instantly started to fill with tears as well, and she blinked them away. Hastily I know specs, she said, laying a hand on his and squeezing I miss him too, but we got to focus on saving my mom right now. It's what he would have wanted. I know you're right. He'd be proud of you. Specs nodded, but Jill Felton nod in her gut grandpa had regretted giving her the suit. He was right. She had been too young to angry. Would he really want her fixing it to save mom? Should she just tell the police, the truth and let things fall where they would she couldn't decide. I found something else to spec said. There's a lot of details about an address in Giga city. It looks like it's the top floor of a skyscraper downtown. I'm not exactly sure what's there, but there's at least a replica of the computer that was in the bunker. What really asked Jill. So it's another base. Maybe mitt has a computer server. That's all I can say, for sure. It was one of the remote backup locations. Well, it's something Jill said, we should go check it out. Maybe it will have some of the equipment. We need to fix the suit specs agreed, pulling off his glasses to wipe away his tears. So what first shark skin or the building. Jill was up and pacing thinking hard. I'll call shark skin. You go to gig a city and check it out, who knows where they're keeping my mom. It could be bad, so I wanna move fast. Is that okay with you? I can visit a building for sure. But what about shark skin? Is it really a good idea for you to meet him alone? Jill looked at the bag containing the firefly suit. It may not be able to fly, but there are parts of the armor that work and the flight suit I wear underneath is in good shape. I'll be alright. Specs is computer China and alert what now. Jill said, turning back to the screen..

That's according to a new paper in the journal nature sent Perez Laura Wamsley reports researchers say they've found new evidence about mating between different groups. Researchers discovered the bone fragments in a cave in southern Siberia. It's the same cave where they previously found remains from Indiana toll as well as ancient humans called Denisovans. When scientists analyzed the bones DNA they learned it was from a young female who lived ninety thousand years ago, but the big surprise was her parents. She had a Neanderthal mother and a Denisa. "It was a girl. She had had trouble sleeping that night and was sitting in her window seat reading. She looked into the back yard and saw the boy. Hello. The boy stood still. He was now quite close to the house, and he saw that the fairies had suddenly vanished. He didn't know what to say. The girls spoke again, are you? Okay? The boy looked at her and said, yes, I'm fine and just lost. Where do you live? She asked. Said the boy, not sure how to answer this Hyman a small house by the cows. She laughed. Well, that could be anywhere. There are a lot of cows around here. Who were you talking to? The boy looked around to see if the fairies were still with him. He could see them blinking by the trees. Those he pointed to the lights. She looked out the firefly's the what he asked the firefly's by the trees, those blinking lights, those. The boy considered this. Those are flies fireflies she answered, what did you think they were? Oh, he said. I didn't know. I just have a book a comic book that. Then he trailed off not sure what to say. You read comic books. She asked expectantly. Yeah, I have lots. Really, she asked sitting up straight. I only have one and I've read it probably a hundred times. They were both still and quiet for a while until the boy said, well, if you want, you can borrow one of mine sometime. This was very exciting for the girl really. That would be great. Hey, do you live in the yellow house down the road. Her house is yellow. I guess that might be our house. He said. Can I come over tomorrow? She asked sure, said the boy pleased at the idea. Then they stood quietly for a while until the fairies started flying slowly around him. Again, I guess it's time to go. He said, I thought you were lost. How will you find your way back? Oh, they'll show me. He said the firefly's. She asked amazed. Well, I guess goodbye. He said, as he turned to go goodbye, she called and watched him head toward the line of trees. As she watched. It did seem like the firefly's were leading him guiding the way strange. She thought. Then she thought about the fairy story that she was just reading. It was about a girl who followed little fairies to a magical land of gold and jewels in the woods. Then she'd looked at one of the drawings in her book, and the fairies did look a little like fireflies with their bright lights and wings. Then she looked up again. The boy was gone and so were the firefly's. But the night seemed filled with something new, something like magic. Like treasure.
