"Down here loving. Hi there. I'm Jason Godsend. You're listening to again a big thing. Podcast among other things music can be medicine like a vaccine it. Sometimes it works by giving your body a little taste of the disease other times. Of course you just WanNa dance and James Brown might be just what you need but the medicine songs I'm talking about are the ones that break your heart open no matter how many times you hear them and you want them to. Because that's what it feels like to be alive. Nobody knows this better than my guest today. Singer-songwriter a naess Mitchell like the centuries of blues and folk songs that Echo through it trend substantiated by her voice and guitar into something almost two beautiful to bear. Her music is powerful medicine an es wrote all the songs lyrics and the book of the new Broadway Musical Hades town directed by Rachel Charleston. It makes again the ancient story of the singer Songwriter. Orpheus and his lover Eurydice who follows all the way to hell and leads most of the way back. Welcome to think again. And this thank you so much for having me Jason. You've been living with this story for a long time right. I mean I was just listening to the song. Haiti's and per seven on your two thousand seven album. The brightness did this start as just the myth spoke to you and then you wrote a song and then gradually this evolved into the musical. It's it's been a super lung road with this thing and I had no idea that I'd still be working on it now. You know that that song that you're talking about is still in the show and is now called. How long and it wasn't the first song I wrote for the show. It didn't come as a sort of standalone like the idea for the song cycle or the retelling of the story through song came kind of early on and I was just getting glowing with a songwriter career as driving in my car like a ridiculous long distance between two gigs. And I I was thinking about my partner at home. Who is my boyfriend? Who now married to this long time ago and I was sort of hoping he would like wait for me to do my sort of running around that. I seemed to be needing to do in the songwriter worlds and that I would come back to him and I remember. These lines came into my head that went wait for me. I'm coming in my garters and pearls. With what Melody Did you. Barter me from the wicked underworld and he's just this like flash of inspiration. Which doesn't you know those things that's usually how things starts. But then the rest of it is just like ours. Weeks months years of Labor to try to bring it to fruition. You know start with words usually look bits of words or does it start with fragments of melody sometimes or they usually come together the melody and the words you know there are a lot of these a lot of songs of yours that have these kind of like hunting melodic breaks in them. You know like any way the wind blows has that sort of melody. Which is it sounds to me like the wind could sing. That's what it would sing. That's how cool anyway.

"Sighing Fajitas too for her and made my plea. I showed strength but then when strength was needed most I was weak. I turned my head and abandoned Eurydice. Let's see to death. She said will be a living hell for my mistake and she spoke spoke truth in death just as she did in life orpheus traveled across all of th- race race lamenting he sang of your it. Assi so beautiful so wild and young and he sang of his own hope and his failure and weakness that ended it all men and women came to listen to Orpheus is song at every town he passed last. They were awed by his power to move them to tears with his tale of love and loss. Some women in return for Orpheus is is art tried to give the singer love they wooed him with their sultry eyes and they're flowing hair as your it is he had once done but orpheus turned them away young men sometimes did the same slipping their lied arms around his waist and whispering in his ear these he occasionally accepted they reminded him less of perfect. Urizzi and they helped to push his pain away away but his grief always returned with a vengeance a pattern emerged and orpheus grew through almost to like it the whisper of reprieve in the loving arms of a handsome boy then the crashing return of his grief and and shame but the years wore on and he grew to hate the pity and pain his song awoke in the breasts of all who listened he didn't deserve the whole or comfort they offered in return for music. He'd killed eurydice easy. It was time I'm to spurn the company of men as well as women time to flee all human society orpheus slunk slunk deep into the woods his lyre still playing haunting melodies that made all of nature weep but without the goodwill good will of human hands. There was no respite from his grief. He ate little P. Drank less he wandered heard through the mountains with nothing but his liar and the clothes on his back his beard grew long across his youthful face his golden hair grew shaggy and dull his is lost their luster and seemed always to gaze glassy at something unseen unseen orpheus was broken and alone in a waking dream. That was always about Eurydice. He wondered like like an old man. Despite the fact that he was still in his prime then midwinter hit and the mean ads entered the woods. It's a group of Thracian women inspired by the ritual mania of the god of wine entered the mountains of race for their rituals every other year at midwinter they they came with their hair down thrashing in the icy wind they threw away their sandals and pulled off their fawn skins as they rammed through the twisting forest paths and then they began their dance high pitched music pulse does says they tossed their naked bodies back and forth amongst flickering torches warling and shouting shaking their heads and jumping then they spread out through the woods they're ecstatic cries piercing through the darkness as they ran tumbled twirled and shook shook orpheus heard them coming meaning. Lena must be out this midwinter night. Gods keep me safe from they mischief but who's that figure there lurking need in and it is. I- orpheus the singer of threes. I bid you dance on enjoy your nights of freedom so wild and unabashed bashed. I stay not to watch nor interfere but simply because these words are my home. Now is how delightful flamy songs so I might dance through the woods with the Mad God of pleasure at my side as as you come on to me and I love to sing and tonight is your colts nine. I'm colling. I'm willing to the mountains. Come off Theus dance with me I would that I could you make me think of my eurydice in another form so free and wildly live but I cannot join dancer pleasure. I have sworn the company the of women in the joys of the flesh in the absence of my beloved. I am a killer I suffer for it. We celebrate. Oh Break Diane nicest tonight you foolish boy. Any of US could be killers tonight. Set Your morning aside and throw your body into the wind with US enter our celebration and ecstasy you lost one love wild lose. The opportunity for another orpheus was beguiled by the wild freedom of this dancing made her rhythmic make dance and the careening tilt of her neck enticed him. He felt younger than he had in a long time more present. Perhaps perhaps a dance with the mean ad and her sisters would not be a betrayal of your idiocy and of his grief one night of dance and nothing more to forget the pain and celebrate dyonisis and so- orpheus joined the dance of the mean ad he leaped and twisted twisted and let the dark heavy grief which haunted him without in lashes of arms and legs he played his lyre whereas he danced and loosed his voice like the mine ads in cries that pierce through the mountain slopes and echoed softly and towns hounds faraway sleeping children heard his savage mournful tune lovers tossed beside one another unsure unsure what it was. They heard but they were moved. Even in their dreams brides and grooms held one another close orpheus amongst the mine ads danced on but the mean ads didn't just WanNa dance with orpheus they wanted him to join win their freedom fully they wanted him to give them his body.

"This episode features dramatization and discussions of violence homicide DEF that some people may find offensive. We advise caution for listeners under under thirteen something to note. All myths have many versions and variations for this episode. We've selected those we feel are the most dramatic and entertaining and supplemented them with additional research into ancient Greek traditions because mythology comes from oral tradition. There's a wide variety across sources are myths may not always be version. You're familiar with but we hope you'll enjoy them. eurydice easy lay amongst the Ashy Moss and dark lichens of the underworld her airy body like a lead weight even lifting her arms took so concentration and agonizing effort. It was far easier to simply close her heavy eyelids and dream. She didn't dream aim of life or the flowers of the Earth's. Abundant forest floors not anymore. Her sleeping mind was filled by the same dark dark shadows and misty fumes that drifted around her memories of a time before death eluded her just out of of reach. Even her own name was so distant she had forgotten it until out of the Black Knight. She heard the sound of a liar eurydice. See here it AC- Matt Song. Why do I know it. What is it calling forth from my shadowy soul the delicate Alex way the notes play together slipping like pearls on a string so familiar and now a sweet voice crying out lamenting Eurydice. "Even the darkest spirits of -tainer were moved by the mournful melody. They pushed open the gates orpheus stared into the darkness mind slowly clearing now that the spirits were silent he could see nothing but an icy a haze of formless mist and smoke but you're it. AC- was down below. He had no choice he plunged downwards words as the gate swung shut behind him with a Grim Bang Orpheus peered through the darkness and saw the path before for him craggy and rough it wolf through dark pine groves full of shadowy spirits crying their own grim songs his heart pounded with fear the ominous site and the strange vibrations in the air but orpheus lament quieted the the voices of the dead as it had the spirits guarding the gate they drifted towards him heads bowed with the sorrow of his song pity stirred orpheus breast alongside fear these were lost souls making their way towards towards the river sticks just like him just like Eurydice easy. This is for her for your idiocy. He thought what and strode down the path holding his voice steady he descended through the Elms Pines and twisting olives lives through the mist and the smoke and the eerie glow of eternal night. The shades drifted in his wake. Finally orpheus arrived at the still dark waters of the river styx care on's little wooden boat sat right on the shore as innocent as a fisherman's bar John any Thracian River. It was so startling ordinary that orpheus almost stopped his song in surprise but then he saw care on with his matted hair his dirt blackened face and this dark cold is orpheus fear flooded back and his song tumbled out of his mouth like a protective Talisman Osman would care onto be moved would apollo's promise of passage across the waters hold Karan's face remained impassive but he stood still and listened as Orpheus sang then Keiron nodded and beckoned end they would cross now. It was orpheus that hesitated from here the darkness would get denser the deathly fear and sadness heavier but once again he steeled himself thinking of your idiocy he he gathered his courage. If she was on the other side of the water then he would cross for her he clambered into Karen's Iran's boat and he sang on as orpheus voice echoed over the vast expanse of water. Her silence rippled across the underworld on the approaching shore. All of Haiti's spirits emerged to listen to the song insubstantial ghostly figures the dead slunk forth from the darkest depths of the underworld. They drifted out from under the bows. Those of the great elm who's every leaf was weighted with false streams. The spirits reveries paled in comparison to the lure of orpheus as song. What voice raised a song so haunting. The souls wondered what voice made made them feel those human heartbeats once again orpheus gazed intently through the waiting crowds as Karan's boat approached just the shore the crowd was overwhelmingly vast et ce of dead but there was no room for fear in his heart as has he scanned the waiting faces for your it AC- she must be near but he did not see her onwards then he descended from Karan's boat with a bow to his ferryman and plunged into the crowd as the spirits cleared a path off before him orpheus saw something lurking at the back of the crowd it was an enormous dog and it had the three heads on each head bloodied jowls hung low over long sharp teeth three sets of terrifying red eyes glared out of deep set shadowy sockets orpheus felt his song falter. This must be cerberus. The bronze voiced three headed. Hound Apollo had said nothing about protection from this fearsome awesome beast orpheus body shook as he stared up feeling tiny and vulnerable. He was not a fighter her. His music was his only weapon but again he thought of eurydice somewhere behind this beast he would fight fight with what he could. He would sing on his voice sword and even cerberus was moved the beasts three heads fell softly to the shadowy ground orpheus stepped gently over the softened pause and Shaggy Gi locks of hair he wondered on amongst the shades and the formless rocks through the dark and the cold until finally finally he arrived at Haiti's thrown. An enormous crowd silently. Weeping spirits stood at his back. You're the throne was a vast dark structure. Haiti's and percents any looked down on this little mortal from far or above impassive orpheus stared up at their blank faces terrified. There was no warmth there no kindness but orpheus had no choice. He was determined to wake their hearts. He bowed bowed his head supplicant and began his plea.

"More which is what I come up with something that I'm not into that either what's something just the something that people are very interested but I want to make it movies suppose you're just a fill bopping Eurydice at all the movies that not just the big blockbusters that come out but you're into the movies and your into all these movies that you know but I got to be played at the Sundance of the kind that the oriental show and plus the big hits here's a movie fan right twenty years ago how would you know what are the movies that are supposed to come out of the next six that I bought how would you know certain magazines okay really which what twenty years ago Hollywood type magazines what what do you are you can't K. William okay there's like variety you can subscribe variety and I think they probably had a listing this is what's going into production and so on but I don't think that that had like everyone that's out there you could be a story here about this what a story but it wasn't like okay this starts this way and then be able to check it out what just kind of got side into production and was going to get what they had what's the release date it wasn't like that was all it each thank you have to read all of them and that it's not like there's an index for you can just search a tour or anything now I mean everybody that was even in the hopper there's probably something you can find on the internet about it you can Google thank kick your Google just look at you you meet a stranger unless they like really haven't done much anything in life you're gonna get something that comes up with the one you just Google what a case like a public person like me again not ninety I mean it was probably at ninety five thousand hits of course there's this problem there's all this information and what is true whenever you have a lot of anything you get a lot of crap yeah do you have ten million coffee beans and probably a that means you're gonna have thousands and thousands that stake just because you have ten million most are good but you have a thousands and thousands at stake fifty three coffee beans in front of you the most you could have that stinker three if you only had two great chances are they probably give you three good ones supposed if there's ten million out there so we have all of this information out there but some of it is a very go what going back to all of the things that was mentioned again there you have a lot of stuff that is just factual stuff that you could easily evaluate but so many of the things are new ones that are people's takes a day and I'm not even getting into yes just the just the brazenly fake news the stuff that's just made up it is false the more material that's out there the more bad material it's going to be out there so the end result of this is the following even though we have way more information than the past I don't know that we make better decisions that we did what we had on me any information in the end it still requires whether you had limited information are a lot of information it still requires the individual to make a good decision where they're able to evaluate a zillion things are just a few you still have to make a good decision cell this brings me now to today August twenty seventh twenty ninety eight and I feel as though I've been an alternate universe that happens of tied to type it which it just seems to me I've been everybody's talkin focusing on certain things are worried about something or at the end or they're developing attitudes or whatever it is that which I just think am I in the same planet as you people people are freaking out about eight the potential of a stock market crash if you watch CBC ready those shows what it of every five people are coming out here and it's two thousand eight all over again it's two thousand seven this is late likely my brothers there's even a guide drudge report today some quad saying that the market will crash this week all the bad side said they're the institutional money flows the hedge funds are back it off this terrible market sentiment the trade situation is a tie Bob if we don't develop something on that soon long term interest rates set out below two percent that's never a good side to know what I'd be added to that was a bad sign I'm not an out and out of that and that never mind the stock market the recession hello there sides of a recession and got an inverted yield curve you got a global recession the trade situation it is just a disaster everybody is terrified to death and they're all talking like we've been sitting on a bubble that it's going to burst here's the thing maybe they're right what idle yeah these things I'm not a moron I'll buy my eyes open at all this stuff I show I but your first of these types of things I all I and I've never ever but the guy with the rose colored glasses side the person who what markets are at a peak gold old all things are going to keep going up and up and up and up I'm the guy who what was the thing we did about twenty years ago there was a bubble at something and we had a bunch of guys and I said this is a bubble these prices are and say that we had a ball the people that were into what what was it do you baseball card that was it how do you remember that you in all your good you don't remember anything you remember less than me that's what it was it was a trick sports trading cards in the deck baseball cards this goes back like to the early nineties I mean I'd zillion years ago what they really inflated and value it was right we kind of everybody figured out that all the baby boomers threw away their baseball cards or better yet all the baby boomers mothers throw away their baseball cards which is by the way what happened a bite I'm convinced they just weren't there I wore I forget I from sure I forgot about a big terrible it for seven years why did home at the age of twenty eight or something that where my baseball cards are the probably were thrown out when I was thirteen and button whatever I do about well because because of all of that the really good ones were rarities and they really exploded in value and it was just an incredible buzz about the whole thing and the prices were unbelievable and I remembered what a topic of the process is ridiculous why would this like baseball card be worth nine thousand dollars add people got so mad at me and they were tell anyway the play to the topic was this is I get the topic as it turns out shortly before the sports collectibles market crashed and as we know with regard to everything the crashes everything is opposite after obvious rather after it happens and you take a look at any kind of a stock market bell tell you could look back and see all the signs are there over the housing market peak you can say all the sides are there were just about if a sports team got what you know and it has a terrible season come out you can sell the signs were there like the brewer team in the eighties it fell apart I think is the eighty four brewers after eighty two is the World Series eighty three they were K. it was the year that latch when I think came in as manager and the brewers fell apart and I remember I was in here at the time reading all these things about well you could see the warning signs common all the bad vibes in the club all those guys they were a little bit over the hill some bad trades that were made pictures that were over the pride that you could see it coming you can see exactly what here's the thing you didn't see it coming until after it happened and then you could say I guess we should have seen it coming and every now and then I try to see these things when they are coming out I try not to just all because things are great they'll continue to be great because your sports he was spectacular last year doesn't mean they're going to be spectacular this year so I know what are these guys that just Mister you know sunshine and blue sky and all of that and everything is great and everything is hunky dory I look for signs of excess that look for warning signs I try to be aware of these things I just don't see what everybody's panicking about it again maybe they're right and I'm wrong maybe the market is over heated maybe the tall of the trade the terraces so why did I get a trade deal with China is creating tremendous underlying weakness in the markets maybe the inverted yield curve short term interest rates being higher the long term interest rates it's so I maybe the market will go and maybe the economy is headed where recession that we've got a big slowdown coming here and so on that's possible certainly and I'll grant you that it's possible everything that we have is cyclical it's the strength of capitalism.
