Now, they've cleared up the flooding problem and all lanes are go. All right, Holly atoms. Thanks as we move on six thirty five the KCRW from. NPR news. This is all things considered. I'm Mary Louise Kelley, and I'm Audie Cornish. President Trump set an ambitious goal during last week state of the union address to eliminate the HIV epidemic in the United States within ten years. Many public health experts say that goal is achievable the medicines to prevent and treat HIV already exist. The road to ending HIV in America runs through the deep south where gay and bisexual black men make up a disproportionate share of people with HIV in two thousand seventeen more than half of the new HIV diagnoses in the US were in southern states. Our co host Ari Shapiro is in Jackson, Mississippi, a city with one of the highest HIV rates in the country. Sean Esco has the kind of story. I haven't heard from gay men in decades about friends and lovers with aids dying all around him. He's thirty seven and lives in an apartment with an affectionate pit bull named Niblett. Eleven years ago. Esco went to get a routine HIV test and the clinic workers invited him into a private room for the results when they opened the door. There was this new literature that HIV this age that and it was just you could tell it was there for me s goes best friend from high school died. A few years later, he never made it to thirty. This was in two thousand eleven after good HIV treatments were available as extremely pissed off at him. Because. It could have been avoided had to do was want to live, and he was just one among many people in us goes life who died because of aids according to the centers for disease control and prevention about half of all gay and bisexual black men in the US will get HIV at current infection rates. Fifty percent, how hopeful are you that a decade or a generation from now against African American thirty seven year old man living in Jackson, Mississippi will not have to go through losing friends and Xs and people they love dying to aids. Given the way things are now. That's not going to happen. The way that things are now he's talking about stigma. Fear, homophobia, racism, thank you for coming to me. Sleepy. I think you know, it's important Leandra mania is an HIV doctor at the university of Mississippi, and he works with an aids organization called my brother's keeper how does it make you feel as a doctor to see people dying of a disease that is preventable and treatable. It's heartbreaking. I mean science has given the tools in a when they have your polemic the challenge that we have is we need to make sure those tools garish those who actually needed most right and the arches poor people people of color, disenfranchised young, people sagging. Yes. Many of those people looking for a safe haven wind up on the doorstep of grace house. It was a hospice originally Cathryn Sullivan runs. The place a cluster of homes with a shared back yard and a garden. She takes us to a memorial grove where statues of angels stand around the base of a tree. There are ashes of. More than forty five people in there from over the years, some of them families wouldn't pick them up from the morgue. And so we bury them just four months ago. A grace house resident died of.

"Times. So he was court martialed three times. Yeah. Court martials. Most people think that means court-martial means kicked out court martials, just when you have to go because you did something wrong. And you have to stand in front of a judge and say like, I say you had drugs on you. And they caught you you'd be court martialed for that. If you went AWOL, you would be court martialed and a wall is a bad defense. Yeah. One of the worst things that you can do in the US military is just not show up or leave. So he did this three times that towards the end of his service. And that's and that's significant also because he was called up for he never had a walls when he was a reservist. So he showed up for his monthly duties, which you can also see on the record. But when he was called to active service. He was in Kansas. I believe then had to go to. San Diego El Toro Mace when he showed up for active duty he'll tomorrow. That's when all these walls happened in a span of just like a couple of months. It was bam. Bam. Bam. Bam. Bam. I feel in a way stolen valor with this guy because he has been made into and he even you know, he doesn't say that. He was a hero. He doesn't say he fought in the Vietnam war. And he has said it before though, and he's described his service as you know. I can I saw the faces when I got home is it he keeps using phrasing like bad. I mean, he really was trying to stretch it at times during his life. He's now trying to say, well, I never said I fought there. And you never maybe said those exact words, we talked about the experience of fighting in Vietnam. As if he was there still US me a question off air could you access to me now because I think it's a very relevant to this Mike my only concern with us. It was I don't necessarily like the idea that a random media organization or a random person can make a request to get records from someone's private military service, a private citizens military service, really for any reason.

"Served as a Reefer MAC in seventy four and seventy five he was in El Toro, California marine base. There must have had a bad time. They're poor guy. He went AWOL a few times. Don't go a worn ring core. They don't like that. In the end. I don't make the news. I just report it was this now joy Behar admitted. The reason they jumped on this stories because they hate Trump, and they want him gone people and they made snap judgments before these other facts. Hey, man, when isn't that? We just instantly say that's what it is. Based on what we see in that moment. And then have to walk stuff back when it turns out wrong. Why is that why is do we keep making the same mistake 'cause we're desperate to get out of office? Why do we keep making the same mistake because we're desperate to get Trump out of office? At least she was honest truth. What trae county said about how they screwed this story up. I see what happens when the media decides to make something viral. They could have picked a lot of things that happened over this weekend, including lots of examples of my fellow citizens being kind and generous and consider to one another. That's you go viral. It doesn't make the news on the I don't know either of the people in this video. I honestly because I don't know I could care less what they think about almost any issue that impacts our country. So at least take the time to get to know someone before you assign motives or assign what is in their heart. I just think it's a sad reflection of where we are politically and media wise that something like this would dominate the news cycle. Not examples. Oh, my fellow citizens. They considerate and kind to one another because that far outpaces anything like what was represented in that video. Now, the left wing activists actor actress, Eliza Milano wrote an op Ed piece. About people who wear the mega camp. She said when I saw that video. I saw boys flaunting their entitlement and displaying toxic masculinity. It seemed to me they were reflecting the white nationalism and racism that the hat on their head have come to represent. So I sent out a tweet that red the red mega hat is the new white hood. Here's the thing. I was right. Right wing pundits. And anonymous trolls alike screen from my head literally and figuratively. My husband received death threats on his cell phone. Many demanded an apology. So I won't apologize to these boys or anyone who wears it hat, but I will thank them. I will thank them for lighting a fire underneath the conversation about systemic racism and misogyny in this country, and the role President Donald Trump has had in cultivating it and making it acceptable. Let me be clear I'm not saying everyone who voted for Trump is a racist. Which means she believes everyone who voted for Trump is a racist. Let me be clear I'm not saying everyone who voted for Trump is a racist. I'm saying that anyone who proudly wears the red hat identifies with an ideology of white supremacy, misogyny. Anyone who proudly wears those hats gives a tacit endorsement for the hatred and violence we've seen these past few years. But if you voted for President Trump you didn't wear. Systemic racism. She's doesn't like the make America. Great again hat. I believe that together we can make America right again together. We'll make America great again. Now that slogan used by the Clinton is.

I'm like, this looks very familiar. That shit was. That was really cool. That was really, but again, it's easy to downforce car. It's it's sketch your to drive. Like let's say you're driving a road car. That doesn't have a lot of downpour say like viper viper, but if I for does actually have pretty good downforce. But if you're if you're gonna drive something like an aerial atom without the wings on a lot of power, that's probably a scarier lap than that nine, nine thousand nine hundred of the. I've driven aerial before they are Harry. Yeah, even the ones with the wings. There's one I drove top your. I said, the the track record with on on the US course. And that thing was that the El Toro it was scary to drive that car. I mean, it's it's snap on about the viper, having snap issue. The atom has snap issues. The first atom I drove is in the wet in Seattle and it was shady. Yeah, All right. right on top of getting like shady's, but now I'm just happy. I'm alive as like Porsche, weight distribution with less weight in the front. Right? It's just it's dependent. It's not that it's not that whenever you have a car that like breaks away, suddenly it's, it's usually a torsion issue with the chassis. Like the thing winds up, they release. I felt like I could feel the chassis flexing saying you too. Yeah. It's not just me when I say actually I have the same thing about corvettes, but vets are like that for me scenario over the vet really. Oh, yeah. I think if you're five. Seven, that's that's. That's the thing. But I'm just saying purely dynamics wise in the new. That's a lot better. Zero one one Elliott is fucking rat. Yeah, yes, RAD, really. So really good and so good. I just drove that the Hennessy version of that called the exorcist. Something to the wheels and it runs on like, you know, one, you gotta see minutes, but yeah. Fires at a genuine hundred and it's it is, but the chassis is so good that you're like, yes, they have. They have done a such a good job with that work chassis that you can run. You could probably wanna a bunch power really impressive and that PT m thing they have the performance traction thing is really, really good. I had Zeon at road Atlanta, the new one, which is a Harry mother fucker. It's seven fifty. Seven fifty eight, right? And with in mode, like four and even mode, five, it'll let you get almost flat without anything happening at the back end. It's pretty, you can hear it. It does that kind of low rumble noise way in yeah, but like it'll save you. Yeah, ish, it'll save you on the exit. See, save you in the is another problem though, with, you know, getting back even chatting about driver training, stability and trash control systems and people relying on those things and not having to earn. Yeah, you know the the ability and then you can have those systems kind of freak out, shut down. You lose a wheel speed sensor because you pick up a piece of gravel and it just takes out one of your wheel, speed sensors, or you get enough breakdown.
