When to Pass Up an Edge

"Strategy question comes to us from e. n. and i'm actually going to paraphrase a little bit because he asked about it in the context of a specific hand but i think that the specific hand is is not terribly important but question was just kind of about when to pass up an edge in tournaments You know the idea. If this is a soft field you can come. Continue to accumulate shifts. Maybe without getting all in or without taking a big risk of elimination. And how should you make these decisions of Essentially valuing your tournament life to say even though this might be plus chippy play How should i think about. Maybe it's not worth the risk. And i can find better plus. Tbb plays by folding now and trying to continue to play later so basically we said is. Is there a way to gauge your edge to justify folding in spy where you're tournament life is on the line i would say the short answer is yes. I have a video series on tournament poker edge which gets to this a little bit. It's called getting off on the right foot. It's about thinking in terms of ev when you're playing tournaments as opposed to Thinking in terms of dislike you know winning the tournament or something like that get into the topic of a little bit there but you know basically you can measure your win rate in a tournament the same way that you can in a cash game. We're trying to estimate it the same way. So i think most people are familiar with this idea of big blinds per hundred a win rate and cash game players certainly are familiar with it in tournaments big blinds. One hundred is not the only thing we care about because you know there are things like icm and stuff like that. But essentially big blinds per hundred is a measure of like for every hundred hands that you play. How many big blinds do you win on average. And that's a more than useful studying cash games because the situations are more similar to each other. Like you know if you play. Fifty thousand hands of online cash. No limit holdem. Those fifty thousand hands are like. There fairly often played with similar stack sizes. They played with similar number players at the table. they're not usually played with Aunties often they played against a field of of many he might play with the same person thousands of times over the course of those fifty thousand hands so they are a little bit more comparable to each other even so like if you have a big enough sample size of tournaments you can start to get a sense of. What is your win rate. Look like in tournaments. I will say. I mean you can at least get a sense of like what are the. What are the bounds. Like what kinds of win rates are are reasonable. And i think this is where this is really what we're interested in anyway. I think one thing that happens a lot in tournaments is people get into spots and rather than trying to figure out the actual. Ev of leeann like they're facing they raise and then somebody jams on them and like rather than trying to actually figure out the call. They'll i think it's frankly it's kind of a lazy approach. They'll just kind of shrug and be like well. I don't want to risk it. I can accumulate chips more. Like i have an edge. I don't wanna risking eliminate. I'm just gonna fold this. I i think it's i it's worth figuring out like. How much would it be worth to you to call. You should know how to do that. And i definitely. I talked about how to do that in that getting off on the right foot series but basically it's just a matter of looking at your pods compared to how much you need to call and assessing your equity versus the opponents range so i think i you need to put a number on. What is it worse to me to call and something to understand. Is that even calls. That might not seem like they're worth very much like maybe you're facing twenty five big blind shove and calling only has an ebay of like plus half a big blind. So why am. I going to risk twenty-five big blinds to try to win half the big blind winning half a big blind in a single hand translates to fifty big blinds per one hundred hands played a win rate of fifty big blinds per hundred dutton astronomical enraged. If you could actually win half a big blind every single hand that you played you would be the greatest poker player in the

"Welcome libby will thank you so much. This is so much fun to do this excited to have you here. I tell you what libby this is going back. You had a boot called the zoe boot. Oh yes. I remember that boot. I had the zoe boot. And i i wanna ask you and tie this into like. I don't know how you can gauge whether a style will go viral because this was from two thousand nine i just looked it up prior to the pandemic and i got it for a steal i got it at. Victoria's secret correct for ninety dollars. I think i had a promo code. And i just was dying for this view because all the bloggers had it. I saved that boot. it's sold out. I wore it a couple of times. I sold it on ebay eventually. Guess how much money i got for this darn boot. A thousand dollars. Twelve hundred dollars. Yeah yeah isn't that amazing. That heck and i was very clear because it had a look alike style that was a designer style of course very similar and i was like this is not that. This the sob. By sam edelman hear stories. Like this a lot i will. I definitely heard about the zoe many many times. And i suppose it's because it was inspired by designer boot but i think more importantly was there was such a everybody wanted and we only made a small percent. You know. we didn't make that many of them. So i think that supply demand is really important. Will you've had several hot styles. I know there were the gladiators around two thousand seven. There were the the fringe boots. Do you know when something's going to hit big We don't know one hundred percent but what we do know is that our job is to really come up with what's happening in fashion and so every time we designed product whether it's shoes or even additional things that we're working on it's gotta be the Be coming from fashion story. How to Build a Personal Brand

Brands On Brands On Brands

How to Build a Personal Brand

"What is personal. Branding so personal brandy. Let's set the definition here first before we get started for me. Personal branding is really all about reputation. Your reputation defines how people see you approach shoe and eventually want to do business with you. Your personal brand is how you represent yourself to the world so as an example if you are starting a business or you're thinking about starting a business or you want to be a coach or a mentor or provide some kind of service where your reputation is the basis for the service and drives a success of the service. You're gonna wanna make sure that you are doing a few things. You're gonna wanna make sure that you are positioned in the market in other words. That people know what you do how you do it. And if you're good at it or not you're also going to want to be able to explain to people why you're different and what it is that makes them right for your service and you write for them in terms of helping them right so this is all about figuring out who you are. So when i get people started in terms of their personal branding journey first question to ask is. How do you want to help people. What are you looking to offer. And i think it's a simple question but it's one that a lot of people struggle with right off the bat because they know what they've done in the past. A lot of people are experts in something because they did a job for many many years. There's a good book on this. Called the e myth which is about Not not online ebay. Like as in entrepreneurship myth and the book is really about. You know talking about how when you leave something like a corporate job a you're you're a technician specialists something and then you switch to wanting to be an entrepreneur. You aren't prepared for that.

"The link to go by it's harder to measure definitely a challenge but we do end up seeing some results that we can at least About those results for example. Our recent focus on sneakers on luxury watches. The success of these has depended in great part to what our marketing strategies and tactics were. Absolutely you know we've just announced for our q. One earnings sneakers had grown by triple digits again for another quarter and that's down to great inventory. Great sellers much improved experience but also getting the message out. We need to tell people that were here. And at that inventory in experience is available in so marketing. Very much part and parcel of that success. And i think it's important to mention here that when there's a buyer outreach for specific focus vertical like sneakers for example we don't just talk to the world at large come and look at sneakers however we actually make that message happen. We alert our sellers. This is what we're doing. You wanna get your inventory ready. Yeah and i think the other thing that's really important is you're hearing us talk a lot about a pretty limited set of vertical sneakers. Watches certified referred. The amazing thing. Is that it's allowing us to get real cut through in different audiences which is great but also what we see is that those buyers don't just by those categories in fact think it's a percent of what sneakers buyers are buying is in other categories. The great news is that we're able to connect with those buyers. Many of them new with a really relevant message introduce ebay get them to convert on a sneakers purchase..

"And i noticed now that the marketing across most of the channels. That i use offsite of ebay be that facebook or other websites that i'm seeing a lot more ebay advertising so you guys are following me and it's effective it is marketing doesn't standstill and now as new platforms open up. They open up new advertising opportunities for us. And it's down to my team and others across ebay to figure out what is the best way for us to use those new channels as new platforms as new sites. Tell the ebay message. That's been something that's been really fun in the last twelve months. We have been really focused on some of these new social channels particularly as we're trying to really appeal and position ourselves in front of new buyers particularly young buyers. We can't just ignore the younger entered. The millennial kind of age group in gen z. These are future buyers in their active buyers. Now how do we use the platforms thereon to tell the story and that's been really interesting and super engaging for my team platforms like tiktok and twitch and clubhouse had to show up fair and so a lot of work to that and then big platforms lake facebook instagram. How do we find tune the way that we show up on those platforms because they are incredibly powerful everyone could just think about their own habits and think about how long they spend every day on platforms like facebook and instagram. To understand. how important is that. We are there and that were there in a way that is persuasive that fits into that atmosphere that. We're not jarring the way that we show up and yet that we are capturing people's interest so that's sort of where art meets science in marketing is headed you that well that's always fascinated me as especially when it comes to reaching a younger demographic like the potential buyers would be on tiktok or twitch because they're really savvy about marketing and they know when the marketing is blatant and yet..

I'm regular ciller and buyer. So i think i see it from both ends. Ebay does not wanna let me forget that. There's things that i've been interested in on the site and so those push notifications and emails get them an email as well have been very effective. So if you're a seller on ebay you're doing all you can by sending best offers or seller initiated offers. Ebays working with you on this as well. You may not see it because it's what the buyer sees but we are not letting buyers just walk away from something they've expressed interest in love that because it keeps it keeps the packages coming to my house will. Yeah and and we know that the more in a buyer engages obviously the more valuable they are and they tend to create a habit rated shopping is. It's about consumer behavior. It's about habits. If you can create a habit of coming to ebay for different occasions different shopping needs buying needs. That's the holy grail. Right we want a whole bunch of buyers out there for whom ebay is part of the short set of sites or stores or shops.

Malvertising's Impact on Marketers Revenue With CEO of Clean.io Matt Gillis

"Whenever i think of malvern is in or advertising abuse. I go back into thinking about what happened ebay. Which was things like. Cookie stuffing and basically cloning user experiences. That weren't happening to take credit for real legitimate marketing transactions. Help me understand what malveaux -tising is an who's really affected by it today. So melting is effectively a hybrid of the words militias in advertising. And you know there's a lot of really great folks that are spending money on digital media and digital advertising to reach real users and having gauging with users sell things and hopefully positive impact from a brand perspective and then there's also a whole bunch of folks who use digital advertising to have i would say shady engagements with end users. And that's what malveaux -tising is it's bad actors who are buying ads on websites and they're hoping to take over that user experience and drive that user somewhere where that user probably did not intend to go. You probably had it happen to you as well ben. We're you're scrolling on a website and then all the sudden it redirects you and says hey. Congratulations benue an amazon gift card. Click here and if you click the close button. It doesn't work. And if you click the back button it just refreshes the page at. You're on in these bad. Actors have figured out how to buy these little tiny ads on pages and most real advertisers would hope to have half a percent click through rate with their ads. Will these bad actors have figured out how to basically take a user through one hundred percent of the time that they want to to those pages so you talk about how affiliates may or may not play into this space basically what these guys do is they figured out how to make money from this when they drive you to that landing page usually. There's some bounty that. They're looking to get paid on whether that's a survey completion. Some things that we've seen are hey comcast user take this survey and you'll have a chance to win ex. Well what they've done. Is they very specifically targeted comcast wifi customers and they're driving those offers back and if they capture the person's email address and get them to complete the survey. eBay's Marketing Strategy Changes in a Growing Competitive Field

"Could you expand a little bit. On what i was talking about in the introduction ebays current marketing strategy with regards to specific individual categories. What's happened in the last few years is a number of vertical competitors have emerged that are changing customer expectations in specific verticals so for example stock x comes to mind as a company that has been involved in the sneakers category or krono twenty four in the watches category and so as a result ebays had to really step up its game to build out experiences that light buyers in the light sellers in those specific verticals. For example you base rolled out a po- sale authentication program in sneakers to both protect eire's and protect sellers and make the customer experience fantastic. This is working. The company's been doing quite well and those categories were ebay has been able to build a differentiated. Experience are really really growing now. Ebay is looking to expand and build up more those experiences so this vertical plan seems to be working. What's the next vertical and ebay marketing plan. Ebay motors is a new focus for ebay. Ebay motors of course includes both vehicles and parts and accessories and about a year ago. Ebay launched an ebay motors. App is focused on vehicles. So that was really the first major new investment that ebay made in motors and now ebay is expanding that to also include ebay parts and accessories which forces all the parts to go with those vehicles. And it's mostly car parts but also includes both parts and plane parts and truck parts and the rest that is the investment that he is now. Making historically parts and accessories has been one of ebays largest verticals. And it's done very well over the years you know. Ebay is really excels when we can bring together a large group of sellers of all sizes and a great exorbitant to a national buyer base. And that's really what he been able to do in parts and accessories but much like in other verticals over the years. Customer expectations have evolved and part of that has been driven by an expansion of some competitors. That have really up the game in excess raise and ebay a while still the best marketplace in terms of selection is in a position where we need to make investments to make sure that the selling and the buying experience is differentiated and his best in class.

We suspect that solution to the age. Old conflict between general relativity and quantum mechanics might lie right at the heart of black holes but of course nobody can see inside them. So it's incredibly frustrating to think that the answers to some of our deepest questions exist but are hidden from us. Does that drive physicist bunkers to know that there are out there but maybe they're trapped in a place where they can never get out. That's essentially the project of physics right. The answers are out there. The universe does contain these answers. And if you can come up with the right experiment you can force the universe to reveal those truth. That's basically how we accumulated all the knowledge that we have but yet frustrating to think that there might be places in the universe that nobody could ever look where information could hide forever escaping from even our most clever efforts to reveal them. You make it sound. Like viz are like paparazzi of the universe. You're trying to catch the universe. He no sunbathing and its portrait. Something i used to think of us as more like murder mystery detectives but yeah paparazzi. More positive way because the universe is beautiful. It deserves our attention. Yeah i guess. They're surprised to being the universe. We're just here trying to enjoy the beauty of the universe. You know and get it signature once in a while so we can sell it on ebay to the national enquirer or times magazine. One of those to whoever will take is part of the freebritney movement. I don't think there's a free universe movement where they're like. Hey physicist leave the universe alone. Some of the mystery no.

So they're telling people don't pay a thousand dollars for the scream because more is on the way. Can you imagine. That's insane

"The with kevin mason this week. The internet has been buzzing. Because there's a ketchup shortage. Although if you dig into the stories you'll realize it's not a catch shortage. It's actually a ketchup packet shortage in the last year. People have been doing delivery orders doing more drive thru things. Instead of sitting in restaurants restaurants have had to resort to using ketchup packets rather than the condiments that are on the table. People aren't sitting inside restaurants so they've got to get their condiments go and of course. The ketchup industry wasn't prepared because they didn't need as many packets previously now. They're having to adapt now. You would think they would have thought long People aren't in restaurants right now. So what can we do to help that. 'cause or we can start producing more ketchup packets. But they're not. You can still find ketchup bottles on the shelves but if you go to restaurants have a hard time getting catch up with your fries. Heck people even some ketchup packets on ebay right now. Which is kinda crazy. They will start manufacturing more ketchup packets. But you've got to be prepared all those package. You sitting your refrigerator. You may want to keep them handy just in case.

"That's why it is a very costly especially at the beginning of business to do that process. So that's why this grant is going to be so helpful to keep reinvesting back in those cars buying bayer and continue to support the ebay community finder santa correctly. You get the cards on ebay. And then by having them graded by psa or beckett's that increases their value. When they come back with a high grade you can then realis- them for those customers who are looking for that great of card and not just something rip out of pack exactly and that's been an extremely hot market right now and it's been really had a renaissance within the last year and then i can only see it run even bigger in isn't investment because some of these cards once you sent them off it'll take a year for them to come back so you have to have a constant flow of them off to the authenticator 's exactly so you have a goal of anywhere between fifty two army cards a week. I think will support. Things is to have a plan having a plan in those goals. Why trading cards so trading cards has always been a source of happiness for me. Since i was a kid you even through the tough times. Sports cars been almost like an avenue for me to really enjoy myself and also like a kid again. Did you start collecting as a kid. Yes since i was about seven eight years old now a lot of people that i talked to who are in the industry or or who are avid collectors. Some of them have a story that they have in common which always frightens me. A little bit as they say. Well i used to have a big collection but my mother or my parents do that happened to you. I tried to be a smarter kid. So i was like trying to like hold onto the you know the good cards but i'm such a salesperson. I always ended up selling them actually. So when did you sell your first card. Elm think might have been between ten and thirteen years old. And i opened up an ebay account when i was really young too so i've always been a part of the hot hobby for a long time in. It's definitely fun to sell now. You said hobby in our preliminary meeting. You told me that you had a different line of employment and then recently that change. Yes so i was an employee in ticket sales with the orlando magic which the hometown team right out of college over there. For over six years it was a really rewarding experience. Amazing people there and you know who actually you know. With the pandemic the layoffs happened on fortunately happened july but if anything it's been a huge blessing in disguise because now they would pursue playing street collectibles. Full time business so you started in time in july. What were some of the challenges. You face moving from working fulltime for companies selling tickets to try to sell full-time on ebay to support yourself. Definitely is tough because with any business is gonna take a huge upfront investment. And i didn't expect to get laid off. It happened pretty suddenly end. It was a big challenge. Because you know when you do get off you can be disappointed in yourself. Even though you know the circumstances are beyond your control exactly in. But i really channel that energy into positively and i would say the biggest challenge is just financial investment. It takes so long to get a lotta these cards back from grading you could be running really low on money because you know my goal suspended hundred cards a week. That's one or two thousand dollars a week. That's going out that. I'm hoping to turn into ten thousand dollars a year from now. But that's a huge off on investment enact committed to that so it gets to a point where like m almost going to be able to pay for my mortgage next month. I mean that's why this grants is so helpful to give me that. Peace of mind that i can keep reinvesting in what i'm doing here in offering a good product to customers on ebay you started in july and can take from six months to a year to get a card back from one of the authenticator. 's what have you been using for inventory. In the meantime. Most of the cousin. I'm sending integrated they will be in that process Twelve months but you can also pay a little bit more premium to get the cards back quicker and pay for a spot on the line exactly is you can skip the line by paying a little bit more part of the strategy that i've had an in buying cards on ebay is also by higher value cards for example like a car that could be three hundred dollars. Once graded could be worth fifteen hundred two thousand dollars so in those cards definitely worthwhile the pay more to get those cards granted maybe not hundred because that's like too much money but maybe five or six or seven a month was going to allow me to continue growing the business paying the extra to the authenticator which sounds a lot like a disney. Fast past even. Then you're still able to make enough margin to make it viable for your business exactly and it's all is a lot of risk involved. What's the risk the cards always going to be in the best condition so You know. I think it's very important to reach out to the sellers of the cards about the condition of the card. And that's why i love ebay because you can ask right through the messages asks for more pictures and i think that's an important tool that everybody should use is to make sure that they know what they're going to get before they buy it. We've had sellers on the past year. Who trading card businesses. Some of them have been in business for a long time and the bulk of their inventory comes directly from the manufacturers. They buy in bulk and then they go through an sort them. Is that something you if you don't do now. Is that something that you may be doing in the future. So i definitely have that as part of my business not as big as what. I'm doing with getting cards graded. But i do buy sports-card boxes for example the tops company. They do cards call tops now in these cards. The can solve them in bulk. You can buy like a certain player. Even they're even selling politicians really yeah trading cards for politicians. Exactly all right. Well that'll be for another show. But i had no idea that was so. Yeah i mean. I think as a small business owner. It's important to open your mind than include different avenues to to make revenue in sports car. World what do you see for the trading card business as we move through the year in the pandemic starts to ease the market right now is never been better and if anybody has read this than don't have to take a look at the state of the trading card logging report. What is this report so ebay came out with the ebay trading card report in. It's absolutely great information. It shows that most of the categories in sports cars in trading cards have gone up in the twenty twenty which was a a really tough year for many businesses was actually probably the last year for sports card businesses off. Just tell you. My local. Sports car shop told me that it was their highest year in revenue. They've ever had an ebay according to ebay over one forty.

"Let's talk about some of those behavioral changes like mobile payments or shopping or are people at home with their desktops and shopping more on desktop. Maybe they're on their phones. Tell us more about that. Yeah we see a tremendous amount of multi device usage within households. So what that means is you will have like you know the people who are on their zoom calls like shopping on the side you know. But they're not shopping necessarily on the desktop. It's on an ipad or it's on a on a phone on the side so there's definitely a lot of pre shopping a lot of inventory checking or a lot of investigating who they're going to kind of consider in the course of that transaction that's definitely A big part of that experience now see just want to be conscious as a seller of things like making sure that the imagery that you portray is going to be reflected well on different device sizes and we are seeing a lot of Video customer service calls to so just responding quickly to questions that consumers may have. That's an expectation of customers. We've seen video certainly provide Greater boosts to conversion whenever we see that offered it's essentially an extension of imagery so and we know that the more images you share that more likely that there is to be a sale ultimately that's a great reminder and it certainly reflects what we see here at ebay as well for holiday for many people. It's actually about those post holiday sales that they get excited about whether you're a buyer seller that last week of the year can be a big deal. Can you tell us what to anticipate this year with those post holiday sales and what to look forward to i think the pandemic essentially forced a lot of companies to cut their orders pretty early. And they didn't go back and revisit cancellations and what you had as a result is even through thanksgiving weekend you add less compelling offers like to merchant than you did in the past. It was completely common in the past that you would on a cyber monday. Have forty percent off of everything on a website plus free shipping and that was far less common. This year was more likely that you would have thirty percent off of select items with a shipping threshold. It just the richness of those offers was substantially less than in years past and part of the reason for that is that there just wasn't as much inventory that retailers had to discount. And they're trying to make that inventory that they have last as long as possible. What that potentially means is that there's not going to be as much in the way of sales post-holiday and that could be to the advantage of ebay sellers and the reason for that is that if there's less competition out there that's a good thing for you because you would be able to jump on the consumers that are expecting sales or offers and they're not finding them you wanna be able to take advantage of that if possible. I mean people will buy after christmas if there are sales it's entirely promotional driven like that's sort of the big driver of that between christmas and new year's rush whether it's e commerce or in stores it's what's on sale. What can i get. That didn't get sold already. That i may be able to take advantage of and if there isn't going to be much of that and we don't expect as much this year if you have anything access you know take advantage of that timeframe promoted you know in really kind of jump on anything you can get your hands on right..

"Be like using a stamp you'll get tracking that means to really big things one for the buyer obviously is they're getting delivery notification. They're going to know where their card is. And they're going to get all the benefits of tracking our sellers. First class mail can cost up to three dollars and fifty cents to sell a single car. And when you're selling a five dollar card there's not a lot of profit you had. You're spending three dollars cents shipping so this will allow people to save up sixty six percents on first class mail depending on what they're shipping. There's not going to be as much in the way of sales post holiday and that could be to the advantage of ebay sellers and the reason for that is that there's less competition out there. That's a good thing for you because you would be able to jump on the consumers that are expecting sales per offers. And they're not finding that i'm rebecca grip and this is the ebay for business. "No matter where you are what you're hoping to learn we've got something really quality for you. Just want to mention one of the thing one of the sellers that we've been working with to develop the content point something out that we actually haven't thought of in that cellar. School could be a fantastic training resource for some of our bigger sellers out there who have teams of people handling different aspects that you businesses they could refer their employees to seller school to learn what they need to learn to fulfill those different functions instead of having to spend all that time training them directly. I mean who has time to train. If you're busy running the business by the way have we already launched ebay seller school. we have. Yeah we did kind of a friends and family kind of thing just to kind of make sure everything was working okay and the people having a good experience. We launched it. I just last month in october. In fact primarily focusing on new sellers so folks who either had just registered or had been on the platform for about six months or less we said. Hey we've got this awesome new learning resource for you with could really help ends. We voted them in to experience the platform. And then just in this past week we actually opened up the doors. Further and invited are more experienced sellers onto the platform to one particularly interesting data. Point that we came across we're seeing experienced sellers engage in that fundamental content. That i mentioned earlier almost the same levels as the new sellers which was surprising. Because you think they just go straight to the end of the line and do the really complicated stuff. But i was really encouraged to see that. I think it's really smart of them to do that. Because ebay like i said changes a lot and sometimes we all get set in our ways and we start doing things you know in the same way over and over again and you gotta stay current. You got to keep things fresh. She gotta make sure that you are staying up to date on the new tools of the new recommendations..

"And as you move through the lessons and courses you can earn badges as you complete certain courses and even earned certificates as you complete full learning paths and you can also kind of track. You're learning progress among your peers. Because there's a leaderboard you can see kind of where you stack up in terms of how quickly you're moving through. The material assets really a fun engaging experience and who doesn't like badges certificates and competing against your peers exactly. It's not just the millennials right. Who liked that pat on the back but another key difference since our school is the learning formats so there are some sellers out there who want to dive deep and get a full soup to nuts so to speak kind of education so for those sellers we have what's called learning paths which are kind of curriculum and their curated collections of courses organized by expertise level starting kind of the very fundamental level than progressing through intermediate advanced and the learning past really brings sellers through and end end learning journey. This reminds me of our long ago. Sunsetted ebay university program were a group of us would travel around the country giving one or two days seminars and we divided it in two basic and advanced and it was how to sell on ebay. But i've certainly heard a lot about that. A lot of the sellers that i work with and gathering their input for seller school have kind of likened this experience to that and they really look back fondly on those memories that seems that he was a fantastic program yet was but it was a lot of work while the flying every other weekend for some of us and we were always limited to how many sellers and potential sellers we could reach in direct seminar education absolutely and you know seller. School is an attempt at a solution for that that limited reach through the platform we can reach a virtually unlimited number of sellers. There's room for everybody. Ebay seller school has a larger collection of learning modules so for sellers. Who might have a clearer sense of what they need. They can choose between the individual courses and other resources available to them and then if they want they can dive deeper learning. Pass down the road if they're interested in more comprehensive training in one particular topic who is so school for by the way is it just for new south is getting started out on ebay or is it for a whole range of sellers seller. School is for everybody..

Let me try to outbid him on his trips former. Hsa grand well. Yeah fair in love and war. What did he know you were doing this. I don't think so. we'll keep it secret. What year was this. Do you remember how long i was in the marines from ninety six to two thousand so it must have been somewhere in there probably ninety seven ninety eight imagine. Wow that is a long time ago and you've been on ebay ever since i've been on there forever night. You joined up to be a marine lots of training. Lots of dance training. They say we have the hardest boot camp so i joined straight out of high school joined. The record went down the pair asylum for boot camp then went through all my training. I was a toe gunnar. Which is antitank gunner basically. But i was. I was in there was. It was basically peacetime station at eight tonight. Which is the ceremonial eric. So we do parades and things of that nature and do the dignitary stuff so well. I'm glad you didn't have to be in harm's way during your time in the service but it's still a huge commitment of time. Oh yeah four years and then four years in active so he definitely. Can you be called up at any time not anymore. They don't want me. i'm too old well. There's always that when you join a branch of the military especially the marines. It's a lot of discipline and organization. Did you have any of those skills before you went into the service. I want to say yes but in reality i was probably a fat bag. Nasty a what say that again. A fat bagged nasty. Just some fun terminology. Basically i was a teenage kid. "Were talking <Speech_Male> about this. Do <Speech_Male> not select <Speech_Male> or check. Any recommended <Speech_Male> item specific <Speech_Male> set. Aren't relevant <Speech_Male> your item. Just <Speech_Male> leave them blank <Speech_Male> please. <Speech_Male> There's <Speech_Male> a lot of misunderstanding <Speech_Male> about <Speech_Male> deadlines <Speech_Male> that we put up for <Speech_Male> required. We see <Speech_Male> these will be required <Speech_Male> specifics. As <Speech_Male> of february <Speech_Male> like twenty-first <Speech_Male> for example and <Speech_Male> a lot of people are <Speech_Male> freaking out. Saying <Speech_Telephony_Male> oh my god my listings <Speech_Male> are all going to be ended. <Speech_Male> Know <Speech_Music_Male> what happens <Speech_Male> if you <Speech_Male> listening goes past <Speech_Male> that deadline <Speech_Male> and you have an <Speech_Male> added. The required <Speech_Male> specifics is nothing <Speech_Male> until <Speech_Male> you try <Speech_Male> to edit <Speech_Male> or revise or <Speech_Male> release that listing. <Speech_Male> At which point <Speech_Male> it will be blocked <Speech_Male> if you <Speech_Male> have listings. <Speech_Male> That say required <Speech_Male> items specifics. <Speech_Male> These are going to be required. <Speech_Male> Yes <Speech_Male> when you have time <Speech_Male> and you can do so <Speech_Male> correct them. Fill <Speech_Male> them in now with <Speech_Male> the required item <Speech_Male> specific information <Speech_Male> but if you miss the deadline <Speech_Male> don't worry about <Speech_Male> it. You can always do it <Speech_Male> after the deadline. <Speech_Male> Absolutely <Speech_Male> i hope <Speech_Male> that clears up what <Speech_Telephony_Male> required and recommended <Speech_Male> means when we <Speech_Male> talk about item specifics. <Speech_Male> And especially <Speech_Male> what you should and <Speech_Male> more importantly should <Speech_Male> not do when it <Speech_Male> comes to items specifics. <Speech_Male> Now rebecca <SpeakerChange> do <Speech_Female> yes. <Speech_Female> There's a couple <Speech_Female> of clarifications. I'd <Speech_Female> like to add first <Speech_Female> of all. I <Speech_Female> know that you know looking <Speech_Female> at that. Blue circle <Speech_Female> we <Speech_Female> wanna try and get <Speech_Female> it to close right. <Speech_Female> I feel that way about my <Speech_Female> listings. <SpeakerChange> But <Speech_Female> that's not really <Speech_Female> the goal here. The <Speech_Female> here is that <Speech_Female> the the circle <Speech_Female> tells you <Speech_Female> that that you can <Speech_Female> add more in. <Speech_Female> It's an encouragement. <Speech_Female> But <Speech_Female> it's not that ebay is <Speech_Female> asking you to <Speech_Female> complete the circle <Speech_Female> and your items will <Speech_Female> still show up <Speech_Female> very well. Even <Speech_Female> if the circle isn't fully <Speech_Female> closed. <Speech_Female> The other thing that i wanted <Speech_Female> to add is <Speech_Female> why are items <Speech_Female> specifics important. <Speech_Female> Why don't we <Speech_Female> just rely on <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> the title <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> of the listing <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> and rely on <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> in buyers to use search. <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> Well it turns <Speech_Female> out that while <Speech_Female> search is really <Speech_Female> important <Speech_Female> items specifics <Speech_Female> to <Speech_Female> categorize <Speech_Female> your items so <Speech_Female> that when buyers <Speech_Female> urge are navigating <Speech_Female> through that left hand <Speech_Female> menu where you can <Speech_Female> open and collapse <Speech_Female> options in click <Speech_Female> to get more specific <Speech_Female> that <Speech_Female> your items are more <Speech_Female> likely to show <Speech_Female> up there. <Speech_Female> And so it's really <Speech_Female> important to <Speech_Female> help <Speech_Female> Get more visibility <Speech_Female> on each of your listings <Speech_Female> to manage your <Speech_Female> items specifics <Speech_Female> and make them accurate <Speech_Female> but <Speech_Female> not show up <SpeakerChange> where <Speech_Male> they don't really apply <Speech_Male> exactly. <Speech_Male> That's very good. <Speech_Male> Well <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Male> i sure hope <Speech_Male> that we have both <Speech_Male> managed <SpeakerChange> to clear this <Speech_Female> up. I think <Speech_Female> it probably did. <Speech_Female> But i know we're talking <Speech_Female> about items specifics <Speech_Female> in lots of different <Speech_Female> places because <Speech_Female> we do want to make sure that <Speech_Female> sellers understand <Speech_Female> and to <Speech_Female> that end if <Speech_Female> anybody out there has <Speech_Female> a question about items <Speech_Female> specifics or anything <Speech_Female> else that you would like <Speech_Female> answered on our <Speech_Female> podcast. Please call <Speech_Female> us at <Speech_Female> eight. Eight eight seven <Speech_Male> two three <SpeakerChange> four <Speech_Male> six three. Oh that's <Speech_Male> eight. Eight eight seven <Speech_Male> two three four six <Speech_Male> three. Oh it's a voice <Speech_Male> line leave jordan <Speech_Male> information <Speech_Male> your question or comment <Speech_Male> and we will put <Speech_Male> it on the show. "You can decide what works best for you. Some of our sellers are following this advice already a lot aren't. So they're asking that question and I heard it. So many times, Alexis how does a business owner? Know where to even start or what's going to be best for their particular business. It's not easy. You know as being a small business owner, you have to be all things to all people sometimes marketing can't get pushed to the back burner, but it's not smarts not going to help you grow. So you really need to get clear on what your marketing plans are. Let's talk about where to start because I know it can be. Daunting before could've considering how to promote your business. You need to do a little bit of homework. So I would say, I, identify what are Your Business Goals at this point in time and then start to think about how a marketing strategy can help you achieve them some of the common goals that you might have our expanding existing customer base. Maybe you WANNA drive more sales among your existing customers maybe you're trying out new inventory and You, WanNa Kinda see how that works with response from customers are too depending on what those goals are. Then you can kind of go back to the drawing board figure out all right how do I actually kind of achieve that goal a marketing strategy before we get into those specific marketing strategies and tactics though let's talk for just a minute about branding we'll hear a lot about it these days Alexis in what does branding mean Exactly, to an ebay seller and what's the difference between a brand and a business as your last question first. So the difference between Your brand and your business is that the business is is clearly the operational entity that produces and or sells your products. But the brand is something a little bit deeper. It's really about the identity or the personality of Your Business. Nike for example, is a business that obviously produces and sells sports apparel. But when we think about that business where likely to think more about strength in empowerment and cool design and all this kind of really cool lifestyle elements to it. It's all parts brands. We're not thinking about supply chains and distribution channels right. So the brand is what really makes meaningful and memorable in our lives. The question every small business owner has to ask him or herself is what comes to mind when consumers think of my. Business, what does it inspire those people to do or finger to feel you really want to kind of move them and make your business memorable to them in order to market your business effectively, you really have to have a compelling answered those questions. You have to have a compelling brand especially in a time like the holiday shopping season when you'll have a lot of retailers vying for those eyeballs, dollars competition can be fierce especially this time. Of Year. It's that's exactly right..

Like you can send offers to it was like three hundred different listings that we had watchers on that. We could send offers to, and I was like this is crazy what is this and I went through and I used to and I've been using it to try to get rid of some of our older inventory or things that we have a lot of our overstocked especially on days. I see that our sales are down. If I'm looking in the morning or afternoon, it looks ourselves down that day I'll go through and start sending offers out to people, and it's usually a pretty immediate reaction like I've had people within five minutes of me sending an offer they're accepting pain for it. It's a really nice tool that they've launched. Let us be able to do that. That's Those were sales you probably M- Whitney made otherwise yeah and a sale is a sale. Yep exactly and there are some things that we know we have some room that I can do even ten percent or fifteen percent on if something that's really overstocked, I might do more but usually I'm just offering people ten to fifteen percent off of something that I know we can do that on. In it's been really effective. I know as a buyer, it's had big impact on me that I spent more up. Thanks. Thanks for more money out of my wallet. I always appreciate that in a cell is that's the word that we have heard from. So many sellers that can make a big difference in the volume of sales. So thanks for bringing that one up I'd almost forgotten about it. One other feature of Ebay. like which is the global selling program and that's had a really positive effect on us to when we started our business. We didn't think about how many other people in other countries might be interested in our stuff we were focused on American consumers, but ebay makes it really easy to not only get your products in front of people in other countries on Ebay. But also making the whole process of getting the products to them really simple. They're handling pretty much everything on the export side of it for those who don't know you're sending the product to the ebay facility and Ebay is shipping that out internationally for you. The customer is paying us for the product and they're paying ebay. For. The Shipping and customs fees and it's a really nice streamlined process that makes it pretty simple for everybody involved on off the top of your head what would you say the percentage of your sales overall goes through the global shipping program at Ebay I haven't looked at it recently, but I'd probably guess it's like maybe ten to fifteen percent that substantial that's that's a big part of Your Business I..

"The buyer I'd very much like to hear your reasons because I recently had a similar case in which USPS priority package took about three weeks to get delivered. The buyer asks for partial refund as compensation for the delay I offered a ten dollar refund in the buyer accepted. My reasons for giving the refund are purely for business purposes. Here's my analysis. So if I refused the buyer, he could have taken the following actions return the order for a full refund. So I would have been out anyway plus the cost of return shipping the buyer could have left negative feedback and or low. DSR's and I'm not confident. ebay will remove the feedback in these situations or the buyer might not buy from again and maybe leave ebay altogether. And by the way, he says these delays and USPS deliveries right now are ongoing, but they're probably about less than ten percent of my orders. George then writes in my overlooking something in my analysis of giving partial refunds when a by request one if the delay is only a few days, I wouldn't give a refund. But if the delay is three weeks, I think my reasons are valid. What is ebays policy on removing feedback and DSR's for Loyd late delivery and what is Ebay policies on giving a seller a defect when a buyer escalates an item not received case and Ebay rules in the favor of vire. How quickly will Ebay rule a case when it gets EXCO escalated in, we'll ebay remove a defect if Ebay messages show I willing to issue a refund as soon as the buyer. s well, thanks George Ebay User Id George K eight Oh nine occur. How that's you know that's a long question but there's GonNa be a lot of great information. But before we go on and hear your advice, can you tell us because I have to confess? I'm still pretty new to Ebay what does D. S. Arstan. Oh, good question that means a detailed seller ratings. I were instituted a lot. Over ten years ago as a way for buyers rate sellers on four different areas of their service item condition, shipping, price, shipping time, and communication with the seller. Now, they used to have an impact on a seller status. They don't anymore they're. They're strictly FYI for buyers. They have no impact on a seller status so they're just informational. Yes. That's great to know anyway moving on. So George disagrees. With your advice on this issue, what do you have to say based on its question? Well, I would say, Hi George thanks for the questions and of course, sellers are free to offer a partial refund if they choose but I'm GONNA stand by my original advice. The only time I would offer a refund would be a total refund for a package that has definitely gone missing. That is the carrier. Can't locate. It had done that a handful of times. It might twenty four years of selling on Ebay. But I would never offer a partial refund for an item and transit that is delayed..

"It's easy to ship my items Gimme cap I found by the side of the road because I'd gotten the cell shape advice. Ebay universally I've to me cabinet had this very artistically tire track directly across the middle of it. I cleaned the rest of it has standards careful to leave tire track intact and I sold it. It got to bids and went to a guy in Australia who bought it because he loved the tire tracks so much and on the front of it said, I'm smiling like this because I don't know what I'm doing, which was pretty much. When I posted this at four o'clock in the morning as I'm getting ready to by six thirty flight to new, Orleans for Ebay live. Does forty you remember dollar twenty, nine, two bids that was thrilled to pieces and they paid for the shipping, right so you made a buck twenty nine from a piece of a hat on the side of the road midas and fees, of course, but who's counting I mean it was my first sale that was that was the whole that was the big thing for me. I would have paid them to go to. Australia. From. The fact that they paid me it was like, I. Do this do this my gosh because when anti bailout two, thousand and four I was terribly impressed by all the sellers in how I just saw these are like totally the cool kids I WANNA be one. They were just show passionate about what they were doing. They clearly loved it. It was clearly something they enjoyed and. They were so generous in sharing their expertise with each other.
