"It's very sweet or it's you know, a little bit. I'm not if I carried to see which way he go, I am too. I mean, I'm not a betting person. But I know what I would pick and go away, Mama. He's like, No, I don't think he's like I'm not your pillow. I feel like you were in my way. You know he might hear everyone's while he surprises me, so I'm like, I shouldn't say everyone's well quite often quite have to. He surprises me. So this might be one of those things. That's that's awesome. Especially you know who he is. He has autism, so to see the The progress that he's made, you know, just to be there. Just a little thing. Santos. Yes? Oh, you know, he is a champ. He's been working on a lot of things and and and and prod, you know, And it's It's Ah, you know, I I describe it as it's delay, You know, kind of thinks there's lots of things that we've been working on for quite some time that pop out when I least expect him. I'm like, Oh, that was in there, you know, So working right now is we're practicing the the fact that time takes time. That is, what we're doing is for the impatient. He's very impatient, and he doesn't always get the logics of like. What we did most recently is that he Figured out a great way to communicate to me that he wanted a particular train from the Thomas in the tank engine world there hundreds of them hundreds of and he has hundreds of them so, but he wanted this particular one. He was able. He figured out a great way to communicate to me that he wants Molly. And so the way that works right now, the way things work right now. It's not like he hasn't been asking me to go to this one train store. We used to go to all the time, which doesn't really exist in the generation that he used to, like, So he's been asking me to go to church, Bob for about Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, He's been begging me to go to to box but you two Bob's is not gonna have this thing and so I haven't been taking they're not And so I was. I knew that whatever he was looking for, they weren't gonna have so I've just been like it's closed. I think actually, they were selling it. If I had money, I would buy two to Bob's just for nostalgia's sake. But I don't have money to buy a tutu. Bob's front them by. Oh, fun, Haywood said. Yes, I would love to go in there. If I just had I will almost was like maybe I should start. No fun meeting by to devise to, Yes. So he did manage to communicate to me that he finally because I was like I've been asking what do you want, And he finally came across, and he said he wanted a Molly. So we went online and we found a Molly on eBay. And so and that's because that's pretty much the stuff that he wants is probably just needs enough that you need to find one pre owned now. How's the price tag on that? If Molly is kind of a rare, you know, Molly unnecessarily rare per se Malia's just pre, like 2008 style, you know, kind of things. I see. He's just not the new hotness that you can get a target. And so I was perfectly fine with a used one Somalis. Costas with shipping 25 99 you know, got bad, Not bad at all. And so Molly will be here on Tuesday. So next Tuesday, so I have it on the calendar. And so when he asked me even this morning, he was all like Molly is coming. A Somali is coming on, and he said Tuesday and we're just marking it off on the calendar every day. Because that's what we're practicing is that time takes time. We have to wait. That is where we're at right now. So I'm sure he would ask me 12 more times today and I'll say Malli is coming on Tuesday night. My dad was a Marine, and so when he would go off to for training and stuff, you know for a month's time who make the little paper links? Yeah, making Christmas time and every day you just take off a link. That's a really good idea. I'll try that next time. I know where Tuesday we're not. You know, It's not going to be a very long chain, but it'll keep him busy in the If I go now we have to make this change. A lot of what? I'm just an educational way to, you know, keep him busy. All the die so he has not just watching YouTube videos like most girls who want to do? Yeah, Me too. I'm a 20 year old in that way. For a lot of women joined the club. Yeah, that is one of things you and I share. So, yes. So if you ever have any of those crafty like suggestions, you can always just send me a little picture because we're all looking for things to do in our house. Okay? Yeah, I got it. So don't worry. So we're going to come back. Let's see. We're going to talk about finally get to your house plant adventure for you and your brother when we get back, right? Yes. And naming your plans. I guess that's a thing. Yeah. I didn't know that either. So we're going to talk about their thanks for listening to the Jason election. Show your listening to my talk.

"I I've had it throughout my life a tell the story in the book about my mom who I distinctly remember my mom and I was stopping in the parking lot. Grocery store. As we were leaving the grocery store and my mom is staring at the money in her hand and looks man says we gotta go back. GotTa go back in. Got Now. Darna. I don't WanNa do that but we should drags me back into the store and I'm standing there she's talking to the clerk I'll never forget the the expression on the clerks face. Know my mom. had been given the wrong change, but she had been given too much change and so my mom is calling me back and with the groceries to give back money to the store and how grateful and surprised clerk was and I. Remember my mom made a point of telling me afterwards the that money didn't belong to us we had to return it. and. That was the way that. My parents operated and I. It's interesting after when when I grew up, I went to college at the University of Virginia. University of Virginia is probably. Bad One of its what's known for is its Honor Code. which is if You. Don't lie don't cheat don't steal and if you violate the Honor Code, there's one penalty that's expulsion and the university is very well known for it and they put a real emphasis on it and so. and then a from their law school. It's all about rules. became a federal prosecutor enforcing rules and went to Ebay and I started their trust and safety department and built a two thousand person team. That was designed to enforce the rules and what what can you buy and sell on Ebay. So for some reason, it's been a common theme that run through my life that finally occurred to me a few years ago. Well, sitting back and reflecting on things. That's wonderful. I guess than it is run through you. That time is that something in that led you towards the law because of that, I think that I I always wanted to have a positive on the world, and that definitely comes from comes from my mom. I thought it would be politics that I would go. Going to law school would lead me into politics and public service and I think I got a pretty. Stark less about politics early on in my life. And it turned off the would not strike me as there's not a lot of integrity and politics there some you have to hunt for it and. I was turned off by that and I was I. Think. After I got the little discouraged about the state of politics a started looking around like look I got to find something else. What's it going to be of got this law degree? How can have a positive impact in the world and being a prosecutor? This whole thing's attorney company when I Was a prosecutor you know at first I thought. Wow, that's really good for the world. Right I'm working for the government working for justice, department on the side of justice, and then you're putting away a lot of young people for an awfully long time. I prosecuted spy cases of those you. You feel great about when someone. "Where the moment tickets went up for show these boss would by all the tickets and then they'd sell them marked up. Like on second party year third-party sites or whatever and that's what's happening at least partially with which is that they're buying them up and then selling them on Ebay for four, hundred, five, hundred dollars some curious with these new consoles coming out since they're also going to you know they're going to be in high demand if we're GONNA see a similar thing where no one's able to actually get their hands on them because they're all being bought up and being put up on other sites for higher prices they they were saying they're going to put a limit on sales right or there was the rumor saying that they were GonNa win sales one per person I remember seeing that. Fingers crossed. I Two P to Sony or Microsoft. If, they can do it with toilet paper at CVS? Why can't they do that for? Cryptocurrency and Taxes

"We're talking about taxes right? It was crazy to me. Is that when we first got into space everyone thought it was like. I Dunno taxes was like such an afterthought but now that we're at the point where taxes have to be of forethought. Kinda shows the growth of everything. For example, my pops he hit me up. And he's like, how's do my taxes this year? And I got ask a bunch of questions about crypto like Bitcoin and do I trade and do I train light kind crypto and I. Didn't have the answers. So I didn't know what to do. And I'm like in my opinion I think that shows just the progression of space since we started the ship like. Regular Joes. I mean it certainly shows. Like a outward perception, a legitimacy. Of like how people feel this is a thing and it's gotten big enough to where like. Government authorities have to start asking questions because enough people are using it to justify them wanting to collect taxes on it. Enough. Businesses are asking questions in terms of like, how do I properly file if I WANNA. Take this as a form of income because I would like to. and the there's not a lot of answers across the board like hard answers but. It definitely speaks to like I said the legitimacy of how people feel. About this technology and if you think back to earlier days a good portion of it was like. An effort to completely get around. All of this stuff and make it a global currency that doesn't require that. That's ridiculous like an realistically speaking. You're never going to be able to run a business. Without paying taxes to the justification that business exists in. Now like it may get odd in. Answering the question as to where your business exists if it exists on the Internet. What jurisdiction it's it's reliant upon that's a whole different story the. I think as a business one thing I found out recently from a from my accountant nine attacks just an account. If? Your Business. And you want to buy an old crypto. That is just a balance sheet transaction. So that means, is Ya gotTA pay taxes You're basically moving in that's highly liquid southern that slightly less liquid on your balance sheet and that's it. So you can buy whole cook does business and your tax as if his property. Ebay capital-gains tax long term short term been how long you held it. I think long terms just one qualification anything long eating your whole longer than a year I, think qualifies for that long term capital gains tax. So. I think it's so difficult though like even if you were business trying to do this stuff. Like. This is something that I had an issue with and some project that I wanted to work on button due to lack of time and never got done was small business services like the turbo tax for understanding. How you deal with even invoicing accepting pricing timing of all these things and look how how value fluctuates in between all of these different points and so like if you think about this specific, that bothers me we say like Bitcoin or whatever is money it's not. It depends on how you like define money but like. When you the if the price of what you're billing in changes drastically from when you invoice to win, you receive to win. You can rec- when you spend it to etcetera like that's not this is going to do that. They're not giants several conversations throughout the whole process of like estimate to invoice to collecting you gotTa have three different several conversations. They're like, Hey, I know and we estimated the Bad Boy. This is how much big when you're GonNa give me but it seems like the prices gone down. So you're going to have to give me a little bit more big guess class not going to do anything like fuck that this quote we signed it it's a it's a go. This is go. So as a business loan, it's not feasible to accept cryptocurrency except for I would say Oh very short term projects or products. Right. If you have a factored in that, the spot price is going to change so much right. So if I sell this bag of chips I'm not I'm not concerned with the float.

Twitter Will Be Fun Today - The College Kids Who Hacked Into Twitter

"Today's guests. His Hip Awan CEO of Afani. Secure and private cell phone service locum his Heeb. Thank you Laura for home. You'll show. You were one of the investigators in touch with the young people who hacked twitter last week and gain control of prominent accounts, including those of Joe. Biden Obama Elon Musk and others as well as those of crypt companies like coin, base and finance, and when they had control those accounts, they were soliciting bitcoin from twitter users. How did you get in touch with the hackers? So Laura be in like. four-time itself, so then after I was so pissed off that angry that I said I need to solve this problem, and so I've entered into a form that relates how they have those accounts holiday getting pretty much all the ring of how they operate so. When you say that they had had your twitter account, nor they have my Sim Sark four times. Okay, and when you say Sim, swaps just described that in case, listeners does up. Does improper pretty much. What happened is like someone will take the form so the underground market like think about Ebay, but like I knew democracy with information. So you said your name, your information social security number your call logs your life, your life, location or anything on you. If I say hey, I need to find out for Laura Shane telephone number, and they'll give me telephone number will give me a call loss to give you. An everything comes through telephone numbers of numbers unique, and then if I say. Say Hey. I need to take the phone number 'cause I need so they will just prophet abuse him that I control, and I need to pay them few hundred dollars now. Your formula not work anymore because I had control of Sim card, so then I use that telephone number to get into a g mail, facebook and twitter, so if you go on twitter, new likely rescinded to email our number. If it's telephone number you've got. Someone's adopted very common technique deployed across US for a long time. So. The twitter hack twitter said that their employees had been socially engineered, and that's how these hackers gained control the systems. Are you saying that? Some twitter employees have their account. Sim swapped like how how does that you or Simspon tried? These people relate to the twitter Hack Greg? You wanted to ask me like how to get in touch with them so I'm trying to understand. You, that of analysis himself, so started going into the industry into this form than trying to see how they operate and to Dodd funny, so which will provide the made acadia that probably that cannot be Simpson's. That's what we did an offer that. VINCI START GETTING customers. Have you would actually getting a lot of attempts to do so? You would getting Dempsey pretty much every week that someone prior to himself or customer, trying to like hack into our system and mend the failed. I got in contact David Mayhew call, they would email method you and they will do all kinds of attacks. You know they'll try to let pen to pen tests. The everything did and obviously in one of the cases restocked immunity stopping messing around it right I know what you're up to. And after I got in touch with him to signal and author that the lake. Not I won't say that become a friend, but I told them why you're doing this. Thank you know you should not do this multiple hackers and they said okay. If you don't have anything to do pretty much, does it okay? Why don't you get a job? He said job, and then they start feeding the all information to proved at. Legit than a lot of information and how I was getting information from a lot of talk of the vote. And when it all this happened that you got in touch with him and had it happened late four five months ago. Okay They were diverging to me not just for this hot, but for other purposes to ride like a kid discount. Lot of databases beach everyday, so they wanted to see that a hey. If I'm interesting in the database, just wanted to work pretty much. is not money. It's also about ego that they wanNA prove something that they would do something so. So Mike Context for not hacking, but they'll be into the songs that they had access to. That follows A. Up I didn't want to. Excessive today were passing me. Hey, today. This is for sale to do sports on tomorrow. This person's so on the deal stood attack. I got a message that will be fun today, and when this message I thought he'd be like a distributor barks. Like scam scams, and but after why? That's all the kind. We got attacked ten. Finance Accounting Noble at depth one time. I taught that it's just a third party API like you know you have like you know where your schedule. The in everything I thought that may be compromised, and that's how they got author. Riley said No. We have everything. A screen chart I tweeted screen shot, and after that is blue. Well and so, who are these people? who were the people involved in the actual twitter hack? The difficult to identity like frankly I don't know I can speculate, but obviously because someone security and privacy I don't want to speculate but I can tell you wanting like college. Kids are maybe like someone between eight, eighty, twenty, one, twenty, two, and they are video gamers. They'd metaphor armed, and they found fascinating for them. Dislike a game like you go into video game on you killing you do stuff for them. It's like that. They, probably living in some way or radio patterns right now in basement. Who does not even know anything? and. They just do it for fun. Obviously, money's there, too, but most of fun for them is just a today. And so originally. The way you got in touch with them was they were targeting these different cell phone accounts, and what does motivation and taking over the different cell phone accounts so for account you can actually to when people take account, they can actually destroy you financially emotionally ended up recently, though by financial I can say they can get into your county bank accounts ticket by Tiptoe through that they can buy a lot of levels of securities financially they can do. obviously going to facebook in an email to, and then they donor all information from your facebook, and then they start blackmailing you that. Hey, likely when a lot you have done this like you know you have this. And you have to pay me this information out there and a lot of people would have to pay them the money because they don't pay the money. They looted operation right so and then third party. They just become Parson Mike is the word processing me. blender used to take my county new. They cannot get anything, but they wanted to talk to me. Just fun for them like people. Some people are sick. Like how did they pick you out of all the different people that they could torture also the league, if not just me like everyday hundreds of people to get them soft, though I'm just one of them on average, every second medical become victim of since up, not himself but cybercrimes so. But I had the impression that this was primarily targeting crypto currency people, but you're saying it's any bundled nor I think eighty percent of people who was himself to an entrepreneur L.! And the new in the cases of those people is it like personal vendettas that they're trying to? You can make more money by a hacking Lord cell than anything else you know. is one thing but Lloyd is like one number one target Loyd and has professionals league doctor medical doctor then. In Lord other number one targets in suffers, and what is the motivation for targeting lawyers Don. Money don't happen. How do they monetize that Yeah, so I tell you doctors, basically busy less tech, savvy and rich. It's that easy to find out any doctor information. You can find out who the best doctor in the city and you consume. Stop Him. And once you get into that account, you can transfer money between accounts who can be that people have been? Going into the count, Simpson calling the bank making via transfer, and then just checking accounts. That's pretty common. For for doctors to clinics have a lot of money. If you'RE GONNA clinic, instead he did even like five hundred hundred million dollar distorted the front because Alaska. Election for them. Okay, so let's go back to the twitter hack. They were some names that were identified of people who are involved these names. In The New York Times article that quoted you as a source one was kirk. There were some other people ll and ever so anxious. Who were these people? And how did they know each other? So they don't. Know the Best Birdie. They just hang out on rooms like chatting channels lake similar people on developed talked with you. The pirates channels. We had people a go if they WANNA have information to the document industry for finding information. If I want someone associated Gordon dissipates on one. Don't get call for these people trade information. And you asked about like a leg. Imagine your lawyer and you are fighting for my open kiss. We begin go to the website by that long since he will. They are who they're talking to the day can. Make some delays on them. That's one thing but other than that. These people are just a game as they would play like you know different video games and kick the die, who was basically a source of the rate industry rock says they'll be extra agents, and they are in room for longtime and David. Obviously you want you want something you don't trust the new guy. The new guy who is basically the main culprit punching the entity because multiple reasons, but the main guidance, the just which had A. Reputation. If you say you want a username of Laura at Laura, Shannon inactive. You may not trust kick, so you can do this. Middle Diane Tell Them Hey, can you hold the money for because you have a good relation? Because like Ebid forums generally have a petition systems. You know so then you ve into this guy like you know every inch it He went to care. Concur depended he the credit employees but I. Don't think he was employees. And, then he gave him the concert start building. So this is just a middleman. He was just broken deals. You tell them what you want. He was just keep his car and transfer the money. The is completed that fall. And so so kirk was was saying that he was a twitter employees, but as you said, you don't think that he was, and he was essentially selling valuable twitter accounts, and if people didn't trust, Kirk, they would use ever so anxious as their middleman to get the different twitter handles that they wanted. Is that what happened? That's correct. Good Gig, only unharmed on in July of. July it was very recently. that. He actually came so obviously not trust someone admit. That soon. July seventh in the New York Times article are. Limited okay, but all right so but ever so anxious. How to longer reputation and. And that was who people are transacting with. And so then. How did BITCOIN come into this? All. On these things happen through Bitcoins, so the way it started was they were selling. This twitter handles four bitcoin and then later. How did the scam change? So I. Personally is what I personally think. That kid was in touch with the employees who was giving these accounts. For a few thousand dollars. And then. Either bribed him. Architects. Social Engineering Him. Legs because like hey can do. This is my. This is purely my speculation that you're working for so long. He warned the trust. Any may have said Hey, can you log in forbid I wanNA see how it looks like something that he made it something so the guy is pasta on. Hey, just do it, but don't do anything crazy. You Know Butt kicked. Decide Okay, man I can just go on or can also go online with I can do it I can. Can also go on like you know. All those accounts crazy. That's what I okay, but you're just speculating. You don't have any proof that or or do you know what? I don't have any proof of that I don't approve. Have critic probably do it? And Kirk? Is probably a guy called coup, which is on a farm for a long time, so he speculated that he someone that was in the industry for wide, but not. Approved that. Kicked it, but from all the action than everything it all points to cook. Irene so in a moment we're gonNA. Talk a little bit more about what happened. Exactly I, in sight, twitter and scam, but First a quick word from the sponsors who make this show possible. How much in fees are you paying? Actually they were so good that frankly sometime I get like you know Oh my God like the able to make it like a secondary thing. That's real you know and like, but this happens pretty commonly, and and it's happening for almost two years now i. It, really is the kind of thing where people think it's real I honestly. Had created a question for you, which is who are the people who are savvy enough to own bitcoin and know how to send it, but not savvy enough to spot. What to me seems like an obvious scam. Actually went on the Internet and are tweeted out this thing same thing I said like who are those people who can have sophisticated enough to buy Bitcoin, but knowledge to. Send. Bitcoin but I think leap Dick's everything. Like I agree people think okay. Let's give it a chance. You know it's like a lottery ticket. You know people may be, but they think what if this is true and other than that. If you like an must happening there, actually flaunted, be efforts on twitter. Okay I'll take the risk from doing that. Hopefully I'm sure my listeners are savvy enough to know if it sounds too good to be true. But people do that I. Think I have estimated that around like maybe I. Just in this journal given us cam like. He put a lot of tens of millions of dollars and well not last week, but no, not over time overtime. Yeah, yeah, we'll be sending money, so there are enough food. I guess yeah over I mean for last week. The hackers did net about a little over thirteen bitcoin, which was about one hundred twenty thousand dollars, although analysts said that about twenty, thousand of it seems to have come from a suspicious address that they actually think controlled by the hackers to kind of make it look like this was legit and people were actually sending money. But then also by the way they could have netted more. However, Cuevas said that it did prevent more than one thousand customers from sending about two hundred and eighty thousand dollars worth of Bitcoin to the twitter hackers so oriented, so let's talk a little bit also about just what happened in twitter which was? Twitter blog posts. Hackers a targeted. Thirty accounts for forty five of those they reset the password and sent tweets from those accounts for eight of them. They actually downloaded that counts data, and then for thirty sixty legitimate direct message inbox, including one elected official from the Netherlands, and it was who. What do you think they could do with such information? I think it's A. Black, man that I've been talking to you about what happened with sin sopping. Let's think about it if you have first all that fool Phoolan that why didn't put? It wasn't like planned. I don't believe it was just like in the move in the heat of happened. BANDAIDS slaves. Attack Factor. Yeah I definitely think that this is. One of those cases where it makes you want to just use encrypted social messaging APPS. Such as like signal or something, maybe what's up? So, let's just also talk a little bit about what we said before about how the hackers were able to remove two factor authentication on these accounts. Well, actually what they did I was. They changed the email address. And then the chain Laras Oh, actually bid on a there was A. There was an email. There was a blog post by somebody who had the at six twitter account, and they said they believed that the hackers change the address, but that when that happened, it did not send a notification to the original email address, but not I don't know if this person was surmising, you know six hundred interest in history, those belong to a hacker. EBay to Sell Classified-Ad Business to Norwegian Firm for $9.2 Billion

"EBay scored an even bigger price for its classifieds business than expected. The San Jose firm selling the unit to Norway's that had been to for $9.2 billion. More than a 1,000,000,000 above the widely reported price. Before the deal was closed, eBay will retain a significant stake in the classifieds business by getting a 44% stake and event as part of the deal. The move completes a serious paring down by eBay following a push in 2019 by activist hedge funds, Elliott Management and starboard value. Which also led to eBay selling StubHub to via Gogo earlier this year for $4 billion although that deal is being probed by regulators in the United Kingdom for potential antitrust issues,

Ebay Reportedly Getting Close to Selling Its Classified-Ads Unit to Adevinta

"The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Ebay is close to a deal to sell its classifieds and division to added Vinter, which is a global marketplace business based in Norway. It is looking like a cash and stock deal somewhere in the neighborhood of eight billion dollars. A shares of ebay are flat on this report. Maybe the. Investors are waiting for confirmation, or maybe this is due to the fact that year to date shares of Ebay up. Just north of sixty percent so. It's been a nice twenty twenty in terms of ebay share price. It has they're continuing to divest the the non-core businesses started with pay. Pal and continued with stub and this will. Leave, as it's activist investors wanted Ebay, easier to understand and more its financials more transparent, and if the activists investors are correct Dave unlocked value by pushing this strategy and this is is part of a winning strategy for for the company in the Stock time will tell but you know I I like what they're holding onto and I. Think they're talking about getting you know. Eight billion issue out of this, and there's some talk about expanding their payments operation. So as you mentioned you go back to two thousand fifteen, they. They spent out pay pal. The end of last year they strike that deal to sell stub hub and. God bless them. They were lucky in the timing of that because. I think they got four billion in the deal to sell Stub, and if for some reason that got delayed. Deep into twenty twenty, there's no way they're getting that amount of money. It's absolutely going to be a lower price so. Ebay got lucky in that regard. Let's go back to the activist investors though so. The activist investors want Ebay. To be a business. It's easier to understand. That there are more parts to the business when they have the classifieds business when the when they had stubhub. That kind of thing, it never struck me as any one of those parts of being overly complex. If. This deal goes through their basically down to the marketplace business, which shouldn't be hard to understand, so the activists get their wish there. Is that a business? Has a particularly bright future I I'm not saying it's doomed. It's not a bricks and mortar. It's not like they're storing up stores all across America, but I just wonder if the marketplace business in and of itself. Is An exciting attractive. Multiples growing business over the next decade. Well, it's a business where they're the leader having. Acquired all the advantages of first mover and having done a lot of other things right, not everything right over the last twenty years, but I think it's it is attractive. They're. A very relevant, possibly more relevant as people need to sell some stuff to get get through this period of time and those with money. You're looking to add stuff to the houses they're. They're trapped in so I think that they're getting more traffic and I don't see what you know. There are other companies that have taken a stab at trying to go after that business. and. They've really failed for the most part. Be Interesting to see what happens with the stock when this deal gets finalized. Also Out of into is a publicly traded company it's it's not listed in the US. Did Trades over the counter as best I could tell the overall market cap. Of this markets play marketplace business based in Norway. is about eight billion dollars so I'm I always find it interesting? When companies are like? Yeah, we'll basically come up with the cash and stock equivalent of the complete value of our company. To make this deal work. Yeah well since it hasn't been announced. We don't know what they're gonNA come up with in terms of. Some combination of cash and stock so Ebay may still have. You know public share interest in the resulting company with. Speculation right now as as to what that might look like, but yeah, it would radically. Increase the size, the business adventist doing.

EBay Nears Deal to Sell Classified-Ad Unit to Adevinta

"Nearing a deal to sell its classified ad unit to Advanta, Advanta, Advanta, let's go ahead and enter. Whatever and Mike, they're valuing this $8 billion. I didn't even know this was a thing. It's the international Craigslist had never heard of their classified ads unit. Neither had I, frankly. So beyond other Sir, the investors and eBay have over the last several years kind of pushed eBay toe strip themselves and a lot of their other business units, which for those shareholders need bay. That's been a good thing. If you if you won't pay pal, for instance, that stock has done incredibly well. They struck a deal to sell off their StubHub ticketing division last year, and this is really the last big one that they had that wasn't really core to eBay's business. This classified ads, you know, think again. Think of it, as like a Craigslist or Facebook marketplace for a lot of non U. S markets. Wish again if you're competing with Facebook marketplace, I'm not really sure how you make money. EBay's classified ads unit, but that's not here, nor there, I guess.

A reporter cursing grind went behind the scenes to uncover exactly what led to this bizarre turn of events, and she joins us now cursing thanks so much for being here. Thanks for having me all right first of all this. All sounds very weird. Tell us about these bloggers who? who were they? And what kind of things did they post to land them in ebays crosshairs like this. Sure so it's just a crazy story this. This was a pair of bloggers. We've called them. They're also just basically online newsletter writers. It's an older couple David. Steiner and they live in natick. Massachusetts and for years. They've kind of just chronicle everything that's going. Going on, Ebay are collectors. They started the online site because they understood that sellers on Ebay were having issues and really nothing they wrote. was that crazy? They just kind of had this very loyal following because they paid close attention to Ebay in the e commerce business, and were they writing things that were particularly detrimental to Ebay, or how did it end up? Up that, they became such targets. You know it was one because of their following Of course they would write critical stories right I mean they? They wrote stories about say when the CEO got a raise, or when something some issue was happening with cellars, having problems on the site or for example, Ebay sued Amazon sellers. They wrote about bats, so they were. Were chronicling kind of the ups and downs, one thing that kind of stood out for ebay executives was dot. The commenters on a lot of these posts would get very personal and targeted sometimes of threatening executives, and even even threatening them in a way that they felt was maybe dangererous. Okay, so.

"India is banning dozens of Chinese APPS, including Tiktok some say it's retaliation. The move comes after twenty. Indian soldiers died in a clash with Chinese soldiers at a contentious border in the Himalayan mountains, but a senior Indian official told The Wall Street Journal that the APPS may have been used to harm the country's Defence Sector Wall Street Journal reporter Sean Lee has more. It's a huge deal. Because India is a very large market for tech companies in general and also specifically for Chinese tech companies for many of them, for example by Dan's, which is the owner of the very popular short video APP. Talk India is the biggest market for talk after. A lot of Chinese. Tech companies have found a lot of success in India. A lot of them invest in Indian startups, and they've accelerated that in the last few years, speaking of national security concerns and China the National Security Council and a number of other us. Agencies are lobbying European allies to oppose new tech, a Chinese company that makes security screening equipment a reporter Cato. KIEF has more the first. First concern is on national security grounds, because obviously this type of equipment can have access to a lot of both personal and business data, and so the US is concerned that with Chinese state-backed entity potentially having access to all that data that they could feed that back to the Chinese government, and that could create a national security concern, and the second issue is more on a commercial basis new tech. Tech has been winning tons of contracts because their prices are super low. The US says that's because they're heavy subsidies from the Chinese government, and along the way there, then driving a bunch of US competitors to the brink, because they're unable to to compete on price, you know it's a commercial concern that really you know new tackle be the only company left providing this equipment

Australia cyber attacks: PM Morrison warns of 'sophisticated' state hack

"Joining me today is Alessio Pessolano professor at King's College London an expert on Asian. Defense welcome back Alexia good to have you on the program. Let's begin with the story that we've had in the news headlines Today. This continued state based cyber attack on Australia. Good morning and not yes, quite, so what is remarkable is that. The Prime Minister himself and held a press conference in which he wanted to alert. Is the broader public in Australia. The general trends in terms of cyber attacks against the country's. Government and business institutions warm anti. We're becoming a much more sort of like Numa feature live and and these. Situations new normal was not necessarily just a matter of hackers trying to make a prank, but actually these were very sophisticated advance. state-sponsored. Cyber based. Activities, so this is quite a strong statement, and in a way it's sort of lifts a bail from something that that it was well known it was certainly understood to be the case I think the key point that he was trying to dress was to emphasize the fact that the normal Australia seems to be they are receiving. End were very sophisticated cyber offensive and end your opinion of the security services technical branches wars. This is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future, giving his launching these attacks. Yes, that was the other thing I was waiting for you question actually and to give a little bit of suspense and the the. He didn't mention it directly. But, sources familiar with Kay's from within the government confirmed to Australian media that. It was China that it was referring to and certainly walls. Notable attacks are Chinese. Certainly the point that was made if you want to between the informal chatting after the press conference ended in the press conference, Inter clearly portrays pick shot, and in which district in government is Beijing. There is very worried that China's attacks are increasingly number, sophistication and Daddy. This is unlikely to go away in something that Australians need to use nets ends. Let's move onto to another story, which is unlikely to go away anytime soon. Which is the origins of the COVID nineteen outbreak? We had claims that The original outbreak came from a wet mock in Wuhan. Now we have the latest outbreak in Beijing and fingers are being pointed once again at wet markets. Absolutely so, what is interesting about it? Is that the second time, but because it's opening in Beijing and it's the capital in Jinping and the the the sort of like the. The public information machinery in in China had been very keen to identify as it had been indeed the case for most of the cases over the last couple of months that these were imported cases, and if you remember the beginning of the outbreak in Beijing, things were pointed to woods this sound. The dead seemingly had been imported. From Europe. So was not just sort of individuals coming from your rooms, believe in food, come from Europe was responsible whole for otherwise would have been an impeccable solution found the problem. Now where we understand now is that and that is probably not necessarily the case there is increasing downs and immunologists in. In in China looking at the case, suggesting vantage original samples of devised the found on this chopping board. In reality where passed on by by individuals and what they couldn't really quite understand is how or the southern you find yourself in the middle of over significant crisis and data the moment. This is really the important piece of news that came out Lusk. Day You sir is that the conditions of the markets particularly the fact that they are kept at low temperature, high conditions of humidity very much impression to have been. Important contributing factors. In the way, in which if you want and this second wave, the one in Beijing spread out there, so the conditions are certainly becoming clear on as to why became a police over second outbreak? If you want him, why connected to wet knock? Less clear is whether the origin actually is. In boarded as he were. This article that you've been focusing on comes from the Straits, times in Singapore. There is at emphasis now that. Not, just what is happening elsewhere, but what lessons can be learned from elsewhere to protect the rest of the world. Absolutely right now Singapore is reopening for business, so and the enduring these easing of the restrictions as restaurants. And shops are all being reopened and as a result. Is. Clear attention in trying to understand what exactly is. That is going on, Ebay

John & Chris' Wild West Robot Ranch

"Good Morning Welcome to marketing over coffee. I'm John Wall Christopher Ben and I. Don't even know where to start. Where do we start? It's just I. had this whole insane story that I just refuse to go into about my old neighbors who were being allegedly? An ebay security team for a year. Just like this insane strikes. I'll just throw to that because. That's totally crazy. Things are crazy. Crazy Times ten. But you know the thing. I will say about this from a marketing perspective. Where was the Social Media Monitoring Team Right? Where was the the Alex? Team where the the folks at Ebay who you should have seen because it was not. Something that was kept coat totally quiet this. There's there's been content about this. What happened in its complete failure in your marketing analytics governance where nobody's watching, the someone should have gone through the mentions of the brand and stuff. That doesn't look. We normally don't send bloody pig masks to people. And that's the thing that amazes me. There is just like this line where your company becomes so big that you have these. Black OPS teams. It's like a security blacks OPS team within your own company. You know because you're so big. So. Yeah, just totally nuts and yeah I'm crazy, but it speaks to the need that you absolutely should have human review, and you should be having somebody in your Pr. Your comms team somebody looking at the social media mentions looking at more than just like the line graph of you know. How many mentions you got that day? Actually sampling the data looking in there because you should be able to see. That article looks like it could be a problem. One of the Challenges Crisis Comms is that like for regular social media monitoring pr you can rely line chart of number of mentions went up because you're looking at data and the aggregate when you're doing crisis communications, you have to be looking at every single article because you don't know when the next spark is going to become the next bonfire, so somebody's gotta be reviewing stuff that the software would say hey, this for flagging this even just for questionable with what to do with it, and clearly that was not happening. Yeah, yeah, and so probably best practice would be. You got to get all hands. Anybody that can generate content and understands the company is going to have to transition to watching the feeds during that crisis positions that make sense exactly, and and you need a specialist software for that. Because a lot of social media monitoring tools just kind of like big batch stuff. There's no anomaly tracking in real time in most software packages. So it's important that if a crisis is going to be a problem for your brand, or you see it being a problem, you need to have that real time feed. It should look kind of like you know. The Matrix low at all the walls, going by and things, but without it you will get burned. Yeah, there's just so much that you have to dig into like you said. You have no idea what's coming next and when it will flare up. You had Boston dynamics to selling their robot for seventy five grand. You can go ahead and buy yourself one of these things I don't know. What do you think is? Has the time come for robots I mean there's they actually show in one of the marketing bids it doing patient screening, it can do temperature scan hit people's foreheads, and you don't have staff moving through the office, so it seems like a great application but I don't know what's your overall? Take on the robot revolution. It's an incredible piece of machinery now in the terms of service. If you read it on, the ordering page does say you may not. Use Robots to intimidate or harm people or other animals, and your warranty will be void, and we will revoke permission to use the robot. If you do these things so they they do have the remote kill switch if you start doing stuff that. Should be doing with it that said I want to figure out how much it actually can carry. Because that's totally the kind of thing that you would put a saddle ought and just ride around. Well. This is another thing I've said this before on. The show is that I think they consciously went with creating dog size robot. Because there's no reason they couldn't do one. That's five times the size, except for the fact that would scare the daylights out of everybody on Earth to see this larger than a cow thing barreling down at them. As a side Gig you have a horseriding farm. Wouldn't the ROBOT BE? Great is like the trainer to learn how to ride horse because you know it. You're no danger of getting bucked off because the robot literally will not do that. That is a heck of a question. We could just make a horse suit for one of those, and yes, it would totally behavior. We wouldn't. Even you know. The ring could be fixed. The thing would stay within a foot in every direction wouldn't go to the other big win. I was saying that for here's throwing. Hey, this is the time of year where they're getting six or seven hay wagons a month that need to be the he needs to be loaded and thrown up into the upper barnes and yeah, having a robot do that with just make all that go away instantly. Nobody likes to do that work. At the AG. It's not like we have a line of employees wanting to do it either it's it's quite a struggle,

Owners entrepreneurs will soon be able to create virtual storefronts on facebook and instagram using a new feature called facebook shops. The idea facebook. Ceo Sheryl Sandberg says is to help all small businesses but especially the struggling ones according to a recent survey conducted by facebook and the Small Business Roundtable one third of all small businesses in the US have already closed their doors. Another eleven percent say they will fail. Should the economy remain mostly closed for much longer giving continuing social distancing and stay at home orders? Transitioning to online sales may be the only path forward for most smaller companies in its livestream announcement facebook. Ceo Mark Zuckerberg said. We're seeing a lot of small businesses get online for the first time but moving online and especially to mobile friendly. Commerce isn't always easy. The process can be expensive and complicated but facebook. Says it wants to help entrepreneurs solve those problems therefore setting up a new storefront on shops will be free and Sandberg claims. It's easy to. She says it'll only take minutes. The new storefronts are intended to allow merchants. Not just to show their wares but to conduct transactions as well a business owner who is linked. Her existing website to facebook shop will be able to take payment on her website. Alternatively she'll be able to check out customers right on facebook or instagram for a small fee to help users. Simplify what can be complicated back in mechanics. Facebook is partnering with Shop Afyon and other ECOMMERCE engines shop which is based in Canada as well known as the merchant platform for millions of small online businesses behind the scenes. The story that facebook is telling that it's here to help is not surprisingly more nuanced. The new shops feature represents facebook wholehearted foray into commerce with brick and mortar stores restaurants closed online sales of sword and facebook. Once in Zuckerberg told the Financial Times at facebook shops had already been under development. The company sped up its launch to take advantage of the spike in online shopping observers. The company has one significant weapon that Amazon Ebay. Oetzi don't have two point six billion monthly users. It's intuitive to see how shops owners will be able to leverage their facebook and instagram followers to boost sales on shops. According to the verge shops will be found on facebook pages or instagram profiles. Dunkelberg says merchants will also be able to let customers. Virtually try on products like sunglasses and makeup by using reality tools. According to the Wall Street Journal so facebook is giving shops away for free. "I remember getting to Karachi and Sunday. Everything changing the tension was lifted like literal weight was lifted. Often asked to how did we survive? Why did we survive because the train the previous train which will booked on from Delhi to Karachi and my mother just insisted? She said, no, I'm not taking the train. I need to buy some food for the journey, and lintels or whatever. And my father argued with he said, we've been not be able to get any place on the next train is critical leave. And she insisted and then he agreed and on, he would say this was a woman's into Shen being complement to our mother hand. What she did was she literally saved us because that entire train, all the passengers would then kill the slotted. I was fall and that literally my first memory and it left to deep impression on me as to why there would be so much hatred in people that they would want to both my bed nets and the siblings and myself. I've been back to its subsequently over the is one of my earliest essays at been home school. I was at boarding school. And I remember writing an essay, I must have been in the junior Cambridge, which is the equivalent of high school. It had description of a train compartment. And I described it as, as a cost Guetta death. Gos- Catta, a cylinder debt and the teacher, one of the fathers mocking the S his hit this avai striking image at vegetated from and I wasn't sure guy just used it in Ovid's stayed in my mind and then over the as I am constantly having a sort of dream. Not really nightmares but dreams of being a train, and there's another train moving at great speed and bosses me by my whole family in that train, and I feel help us, I feel my arms and ex-con to move have a cell phone, which doesn't work, but the message of the, the dream is that the other train just speeds by and I'm then stranded on my own without any communication with the entire world. And survey lonely feeling. It's only now in hindsight. Look back, and I feel like God, that is the experience. I lived through the same experience that I had my Hindu colleague, had inverse, which means her family was escaping from Pakistan to India and the same same sort of tension. Same sort of problems logistics, how you get out what you take with you. Who do you trust all the same issues she faced? And she was also a young girl than men. I was doing my piece in, in London at soya's I met her and at that time, a handmade very many Indians, and when we became friends, we began to swap stories and joke about each other's cultures. And, and she said, you know, that we were told it if you ever see a snake and the Muslim, you actually kill the Muslim, I because the Muslim is more dangerous more venomous than the snake an ice mileage. She said, why he's smiling as I said, I've heard exactly the same story except in my story to seek. The Hindu whatever and we both smiling, realize it. I experienced were like a a when when human relations break down to that level. These stories assume a far greater importance of their magnified inflated, and they in a sense, personify the behavior of the other, and that is very dangerous. It's interesting, you say that because I'm Pakistani, I grew up in Karachi, and I moved here. When I was twelve and I have never had negative experiences with Indian people are Hindu people, but I do feel somewhere deep down like this, this bias, it's so bizarre. You know, like I am so surprised as 'cause my partner is Jewish like, I'm very accepting and living that lack of hatred in my life in a lot of ways. But at the same time at like, I have this thing even though you live through this, like really time you didn't. You didn't feel that be ideas ahead the images. I had from the discussions, so my claws fellows from the people, I met about inducing, six vague negative. So I had to overcome that. In fact, wonder stand who these people were widely hated us why we hit to them, and that is when I met by Indian print, many as later in London, where really began to understand these people very much. Like us and in a sense experienced exactly as what we had experienced. So when I became adult and understood some of these different permutations and combinations of human relations, I began to get very involved in what's called interfaith understanding interfaith dialogue. And I began to ask questions and began say the people I meet a friend EBay, normally just like us. They just like me. So what keeps them away from me is my lack of understanding? I own prejudice on my own. Ignorance

"Or a company that files or by patents with no intent to produce anything from them the rather use them to threaten litigation against others in order to win court cases or more likely get a settlement out of court you could also licensed patents to companies and in fact there are a lot of companies that do licensed patents out to other people or other organizations but there's a disturbing trend among certain groups to kind of horde these patents and just wait for someone to do something that appears to violate them or to infringe upon them and then they threaten legal action and some companies rather than going through the process of having to defend themselves in court which is incredibly expensive and time consuming we'll just end up coming to an agreement for an out of court settlement and that's how these companies make their money they don't make it by producing something or building anything or licensing in for you know ideas out to other people or rather patents patents aren't really for ideas it's it's the implementation of an idea instead they wait for someone to do something that looks like it's an infringement and then they go after them and with the hope of an out of court settlement or maybe a court award if the whole case goes to decision the most recent information i could find about this involved ebay arguing that the patents in question contain unpatentable materials such as abstract ideas you cannot patent an abstract idea that information all came to light back in the spring of twenty eighteen at least that was where the documents i found were that's when they were filed was in two thousand eighteen so this is still unfolding as i record this and i have to admit i haven't read all the legal proceedings it would take me days to go through it all or even the full two hundred page complaint because that was it was enormous it could well be that xp rt has valid argument here so i don't wanna give you guys the feeling that the whole thing is without merit that might not be the case there may be a real legit case behind ex prt's allegations i am amazed that this battle is stretched into twenty eighteen though because typically you would see either a settlement in this case you would argue that.

"Two foster networks of support for entrepreneurs and small businesses are programs focus on vulnerable populations and underserved communities we also empower ebay employees to make a greater impact and communities around the globe by matching their donations and making cash donations when they volunteer in quote now let's skip ahead a little bit we're going to skip ahead to the summer of nineteen ninety nine there's a lot of things that were happening at this company but we're already getting pretty bugged down in minute show so i wanna hit some of the big big stories of ebay the company was growing rapidly we're still in the dot com bubble phase new employees were brought on revenues were up the stock price had continued to climb hitting more than one hundred fifty dollars per share at this point the dot com bubble was getting pretty darn big and there were only a few signs the dark times were ahead for the industry as a whole but ebay suffered an early setback that got a lot of attention the site started having some serious connection issues that stability of the site was in question in june nineteen ninety nine the site went down for twenty two hours this was huge news at the time buyers and sellers were angry and distraught imagine that you're sitting there ready to snipe an auction for a signed copy of weirdo yankovitch first album and then the site crashes and it doesn't come back for nearly a full day so what was going on according to ebay the software powering the site was at fault and that software came from to outside vendors sun microsystems and oracle ni covered oracle in some recent episodes you can go back and listen to those and learn all about that company it's also a fascinating story but other people were suggesting that perhaps the site had stability issues due to scaling up to a larger platform the issue being that more and more people were using ebay and the.

"A single time but only through that direct connection so it was not yet an internet shop pierre figured that the internet was really the future he figured this is really where things are going to go and he was a little frustrated with how reluctant his partners were to bring ishak fully online and so he left the company in nineteen ninety four but he still held onto a stake in the company he still had some ownership which ended up being a really good decision for him because in nineteen ninetysix which was a year after ebay would launch i'm just skipping ahead for a second here microsoft would acquire e shop and that acquisition was done in part through stocks meaning microsoft would grant stocks to people who shared ownership in each shop and they would get a certain number of microsoft shares that turn pierre into a millionaire overnight they had the freedom to work on whatever he liked at that point and of course by then ebay was already a thing although it wasn't called that yet anyway the other thing he ended up working on after he left e shop was a company called general magic that was founded by bill atkinson andy hertzfeld and marc porat now herzfeld and atkinson were two of the members of the original macintosh team they actually designed the original macintosh and pierre was going to get to go work for the men who designed the computer he had grown to love so much in the one that he had cut his teeth on when he was really getting serious about programming so he was pretty excited about it general magic was developing small hand held computing devices that were sort of a predecessor to personal digital assistants or pda's if you remember those and pda's intern were sort of the predecessors for smartphones peers job was to kind of act as a liaison between general magic and third party programmers so he was kind of helping third party programmers who wanted to build software for.

"The thing that they were doing that was unethical though i might my best analysis was really this is just a case of their left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing and somebody internally had some problem that we don't know what it was and they said well hey rather than saying our guys were doing something wrong let's just say we were being cheated her fooled or so excuse me or something by by the affiliates hey i get i get that but when i still don't know maybe there's damancher this attends a huge donor heavy into this but what is the offence that is being alleged that they were trying to coverup her blame on somebody else who are so here you years in my view of reading of this soviets again i never really understood what happened but one thing that some people seem to get the impression happened is that you're taking credit for referrals to ebay that you were really responsible for in other words that pixel that was on their website on the widget would would capture affiliate credit even if they went to ebay by themselves at that had nothing to do with the add that you had placed there is that accurate or is that a misunderstanding of what we're how this worked okay so we have to introduce a new level of complexity to address the song i know which of the guy you're you're correct so there is a man company which was called commission junction which ebay employed as the middleman contractor that actually ran this program and did everything now they had their own contract that said we couldn't put eubased pixel actually in the ad that they would aafli hacked the users would actually have to actually click the ad and go to the website and that's when the direct connection would be established between the user's computer and ebay allowing ebay to write cookies on their computer now very very early in our involvement with ebay when everyone is trying to figure out g how can we make this better how can we get more traffic how can we generate more clicks ebay made it known to me and kind of a.
