Dodgers Out-Slug Padres to Win High-Scoring Affair

"A stunning finish on the double play off the bat of the former dodger manny. Machado as the dodgers hold on at pet, go to win seven six, they win the series as well over the Padres, two games to one John Shea Jim Russell back with you here on the wrap up show, we said the padres lead baseball by the way and runs per game last. Last segment. They entered the day third in runs per game at five, and a half runs per game on the season and against scored six runs here today. So they've been very, very good offensively. But again, with the loss, they fall to seven and six on the season. Let's hear from the manager who was jacked for the first time in his career. Here's Jay Taylor game. Yeah, it's always good to see. You know the guys continue to battle and. You. Know we've we. Kind of felt that you know inside the. In the DUGOUT when we've been down never really feel like we're out of it and you know get get the heart of the order up and chance to you know always be in the game and. You know look at the end Mandy you know squared a ball up to to left field and and They made a hell of a play I. Mean it was A. Had to be you know a perfect throw and it was a perfect one hop throw and a intact. So but dancer question Yeah. It's. It's good to see him battling back and chip away and. You know we. You know we we came up short. Your first managerial ejection tonight. That's something that had been building up over the course of the game with Margaret Mature, as more of a spur of the moment reaction to that dish. Now. It's a, it's not built up minutes. Look. I think manny thought the ball was down I. thought it was down and. You know it either I go with me and he goes I'm guessing. So it's simple as up. Your thoughts on how? To. Handle. I thought you know Came in You know we were looking for a little softer landing but. The NFL west, there's there's no soft landing especially with the dodgers and. looking for a spark and. He gave up to ground balls got through and and then obviously Peterson clicking man you know. Peterson Click a couple balls tonight. You know and. But but I was impressed with how he went back out in the second inning and. I thought that was good and it's always nice to kind of You know finish on a on a higher note, and hopefully he gets some confidence and you know continues to go forth. Interesting admission there from JAS Tingler. We were hoping for a softer landing for Luiz Patino. Remember we heard yesterday literally yesterday when he was called up, he would not initially be pitching and high leverage spots. He makes his Major League debut, not not with the lead, but trailing four too. So you could argue the leverage component of it, but Jim again, he went left left right left with the VP that a left-wing cory seager who's read hide Jock Peterson three homers in the series including the homerun again. Again Against Patino and again, you're going to have to get him at one point or another. If you call them up, there's a reason you call it Emma but Jeez in the history of big league debuts, can it be much more difficult for Patina than the inning he had to deal with there could not have been more difficult. You're facing an MVP facing the guys at thirty six bombs last year who was notorious for being i. mean you saw in the home run Derby last year he. Is. Ball's. Chris Taylor their professional hitter. It's not an, there's no easy ways to face the dodgers especially in a four two game. You put him in there hopefully to have Jason, Taylor said this thing and there by the way it's four nothing before with two outs, TAT tease homers. So all of a sudden the dynamic of the game has changed it's chain, but but seniors already ready like you've already said he's GonNa Pitch the sixth, right? Like you wonder again at four nothing there you go. Down seven nothing whatever. But at fourteen like well, I'm back in the game and you don't want him to get up and then sit down again and I'm sure that's the reason why they put them in the game like look he's already ready. Maybe. It might be not the best time to put him in. But look, we just hit a two run bomb to to get us going hopefully and putting a guy in there where he is one of if not the top prospect on this in this organization, hopefully, we can get another spark on this guy route that is

"A teller. I'm taking Iraqis any under well you'll get to pick winners have allowed the most runs in major league baseball. 88. Yes, So here's what I'm going to do. As as Big al would say. But Jo Jo Going to take their Iraqis to score first. I'm not doing all of those bits. I'm taking Iraqis discard. First, I'm taking the Rockies to win and I'm taking the Rockies and the over Mariners there. 14 games already have a run differential of minus 31. Wolf and how many games eight or 9 14 14 14 games, minus 31 run differential. They played the entire schedule. They haven't had any postponements. They have not, by the way that minus 31 is worst in the majors. The Rockies, on the other hand, are plus 24 right, which is second in the majors behind only the Dodgers, who have, plus 33 right, the Rockies. Coming out of that Texas Siri's were a plus 10. So 10 12. I can't remember. I know they were plus, but there were they were either one of two coming out of the Texas Siri's on now after we finish up with the Giants were still in the number two position right behind the Dodgers and the Mariners. Like I said 88 runs allowed Worst in Major League Baseball, the Rockies eighth best. 40 runs allowed through 12 games. Some of those. Some of those runs here of late have not looked like No good baseball plays is their number one for a while, then the padre Siri's They allowed quite a bit runs, right, right. You gotta you gotta finish. You know, I used to have AH great basketball coach who told me The play's not over until you have a rebound. Right like that's literally when the defense of play is over, when you have a rebound and then baseball what I'm learning is you know what the game's not over until the game is over because You just never know. You just never know in the you know, you put two on thegame. Not over. No,.

MLB Marks The 100th Anniversary Of The Negro Leagues

"Baseball is marking the anniversary of the Negro leagues created 100 years ago. The league's showcased black baseball players players who couldn't play on the major teams because of the color of their skin. Only a few members of the leagues are alive to celebrate the centennial Michigan radios, Doug Tribute spoke to the only surviving team owner and others about the legacy of the legendary leagues. In 1920 owners of independent black baseball teams from the Midwest gathered in Kansas City, Missouri. At that meeting they created the Negro National Leagues had no idea they were making history. They didn't care about making history. Bob Kendrick heads the Negro Leagues Baseball museum there, he says. Faced with segregation, black owners and players kept pushing for organized baseball. These athletes never cried about the social injustice. They went out and did something about so you won't let me play with you and I create my own And they did today. Stars like Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard and Satchel Paige are enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame, but thousands of black and Latino players endured bigotry and racist taunts. It was Tear before the players at that time. Many Forbes owned the Detroit Stars from 1956 to 1958. She lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that players try of them. They had nowhere to stay because of the discrimination, so they slept in the buses. And they couldn't go in places to eat so one person would go to the back door. When get food for all the players. Pedro Sierra pitched in the Negro leagues for several seasons in the 19 fifties. He grew up in Cuba and says it was tough to adjust to segregation and racism he saw in the US It wasn't easy to see all the problem with the raise. I know all about it, herb artist. But I hadn't experienced today. Sierra lives in New Jersey In 1954 he signed with the Indianapolis clowns at the age of 16. His salary was less than 5% of what white players were earning dollars a month a month, $100 a month. And I look back and say, Oh my God. Jackie Robinson played briefly in the Negro leagues. Then, in 1947 he broke baseball's color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in Cleveland, Larry Doby became the first black player in the American League. Coming seasons brought many more signings. But many Forbes sympathizes with the many athletes who were good enough to play in the major leagues, but never got a shot. Unfortunately, some of the good players by the time the time Came. They were too old to play. The last league folded in the early 19 sixties, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum estimates there are about 100 former players still alive. Forbes is 88 worries about being one of the last left to tell the story. And I just want a if I'm worthy of represent and speaking about the Negro League because When I got involved, things was easier for me. Then it wass father one before me. Many Forbes will keep sharing her stories with younger generations and others will to Major League Baseball has a day to honor the league's set for next month. The museum has pushed back its year long celebration of the centennial to next year and renamed it Negro Leagues. 101

"Last night's Houston Astros Los Angeles dodgers game got a bit heated. The teams jawed at one another and the benches cleared after Dodgers Reliever Joe Kelley through a couple of pitches that the stroz perceived as intentional being balls. This was the first meeting between the two teams. Since the Astros signed stealing scandal came to light the dodgers were the team the Astro's beat in the two thousand seventeen world series. I cannot repeat some of what was captured by microphones during last. Night's broadcast but one of the voices expressing colorful language was that of Astros Manager Dusty Baker who learned yesterday he will be back as manager next season. The Astros Tuesday picked up the option on his contract for twenty twenty one. The STROZ also picked up contract options for pitching coach, Brent Strom and third base coach Gary Pettus.

This is about an ex in welcome back to the candidate frame. A first off welcome. Welcome to the show. It's have you thank you very much happy to year. Always Nice to talk to a legend. Old? I know. We talk a lot about your career as a sports photographer and that's we're going to spend a lotta time doing but I always to talk to sports, photographers or anyone who's been covering the game for a long time, always like hearing the story of the first live event smart event that they ever went to. That was like significant for them. What would that be? The first one I shot like no other one shot, but. went to maybe as a kid well, that's a great question I would have to say a grew up. A mets fan I. also a Rangers Fan growing up. I remember distinctly go into a myths game with my dad. I probably was maybe seven or eight. And, we were sitting behind home plate at Shea Stadium frankly sort halfway up, maybe third deck or something in. A foul ball team our way straight back. Identity shoved me out of the way in cod with one round. Tremendous amount it's been going. You know I'll never forget that I'm glad you remind me of that. That was fifty something years ago. An amazing that's A. Great Memory have first game. Yeah, well, it's better than getting in the head with a puck. But it would. No it was, it was a great memory. I had that ball forever I. Don't know what happened to it. In various moves over the years on the hockey side remember going to see the Rangers play in back. In the day we used to Go the old Madison Square Garden. This is the garden that was up on Tenth Avenue. I believe before they built the new garden in one, thousand, nine, hundred, seventy one. And the old guard, and had these pillars that you know. The new garden had the suspended ceiling. We made it so revolutionary. The Old Guard was Lee elda auditorium in at these pillars came down, and they sold seats literally behind the pillars that would call obstructed view seats. Added stamped on the ticket obstructed view. And you, literally sitting behind the pillar, and that's where me, the kid with always stupid behind the pillar. Every single time by Dan we get the tickets were like fifty cents. So that's what my earliest memories ago to raise your AIDS, I went to I can't remember which was first where there was a rams game at the coliseum that was my first, or whether it was dodger game. Experienced that I, remember was just the noise of so many people. And just it's unlike any other feeling I ever had were have dislike. Thousands of thousands of people around you at the same time, and there's something that I think is. Very lowering about that whether you are a sports fan as Lords player in your case of a photographer and talked to me about the intoxication of just that feeling at that sound. And, what it does for you especially when you're out there virtually in the center of it, it's still funny and bringing this up because the last. Or so this is gonNA sound really weird, but I've had this crazy ringing in my ear might. Equally right, it never experience, so go to the doctor. Get a hearing test the whole thing that they do. I said well sports photographer you in noisy environments. She says I said. When's the last time we were in one? Four months ago. Well the ever experiences when you're in a loud arena or stadium I should not consciously. She's a will. Maybe you haven't withdrawal surgical. Rain you this consciously? MLB Marlins Coronavirus Outbreak, Plus Dodgers v. Astros Rivalry

"Alden how you doing? I don't know what I am right now. You and a lot of folks in and around Major League, baseball because while last week the League got off to a mostly successful start minus von Soto test. The last forty eight hours have been difficult. Things have been chaotic. And you and I are talking right now on Monday afternoon and we know that eleven Miami. marlins players in two coaches have tested positive for coronavirus. I mobile postponed the MARLINS oils game as well as the Yankees. Phillies game that was slated for today because the phillies played Miami over the weekend in were potentially exposed. Alden, the League's owners meeting today to discuss the outbreak. What came out of that? Woman. I tell you the big thing that didn't come out of that. In that is that there were no serious discussions yet about the possibility of cancelling this season, which was obviously the question that came up on everybody's minds when they see sort of an outbreak like this, take place. What happened with the Marlins in Philadelphia was just a reminder of how fragile this season is. It's a reminder of the fact that Major League. Baseball is trying to stay to season in the middle of an escalating public health crisis in a country that obviously hasn't been able to corral the corona virus. Any little one thing can send this season spiraling. But the one thing Meena you kept hearing when baseball got back, and the positive cases were lower than people anticipated, and there started to be a little bit of optimism about a spots. Chances of actually making this happen for one thing you can make being reminded of was at once. The season began layers were going to start travel. They were GONNA go on the airport. Security you're going to get on planes? They were GONNA. Stay on, hold stay in hotels and the complications of actually making this work. We're going to be incredibly more difficult than it was. When those guys were just in their own home, cities were already seen that be really difficult, and it is only the first four days of the season. There's a lot that starring about this including number of tests, but especially jarring is the revelation that the marlins players after learning about the positive tests decided in a group chat apparently. To play. They let the phillies now. And then the phillies also decided to play, and apparently that was sufficient. Does that surprise you? I think what's interesting about. This isn't like the sensibilities of Clare's or sort of the tenants that players hold onto. Don't necessarily apply situations like it's what I mean by. That is that athletes always operate under this mantra of suck it up? Play through injury clay. Hart show up every day. Do the best that you can do and when you're talking about a public health crisis when you're talking about the coronavirus pandemic in a situation where this virus spreads so easily. Those sensibilities don't apply here. They've been operating under a similar mindset like this their entire lives. It's what sort of made them great in their at their sport, which is just. Suck it up and play in. Get on with it, and that's why it can't be their decision. Major League Baseball at the very least, and at most a third party is going to have to intervene in this in these matters, because if not. This is going to continue despite a web, this season is going to be compromised and even worse. The pandemic in this country is going to get even worse.

Baseball is making Black Lives Matter center stage on Opening Day

"Talking to ESPN Major League Baseball reporter out and Gonzalez, and that being said I feel the cat's sorta out of the bag. It feels like as a whole athletes across all sports or looking around and saying I want to use my voice for more now. We're used to baseball players, not necessarily having a ton of voice. That's one of the issues. Sport has faced for the last several years. So what now the the voice is going to be one that is so charged, socially divas sense of how owners feel about finally. The the players are out there speaking, but they're speaking about issues. That may be controversial to their fans. Yeah and you know what I think. The owners are in a situation where even if they were against it or didn't like it or didn't like what it did to their revenue streams, there's nothing they can do about it. Because one thing that's been important, that's happened recently, and you can say financially driven or whatever it is but Major. League Baseball has their support Major League baseball sort of wrapped his arms around this movement and other professional sports leagues, having the NFL in a way that to be honest I don't know that I'd ever imagined. Imagined them doing so with the video tributes for black lives matter before every game. You'RE GONNA. See that a lot today. everybody at the Dodge at the dodgers stadium last might melt and held onto a black ribbon before the game. This is not just something that the players are empowered to do right now, but it's also something that has the backing of the League that and to be fair. The League caught a lot of criticism because they were sort of late in releasing a statement and lending its voice actor George Floyd's burner, but You know there. There'd be aggressive with this. Teams are being aggressive with this I. Mean right before I jumped on with you, I saw the the Tampa Bay rays twitter feed. I don't know if you saw that, but they said something to the effect that it's opening day, and it's time to arrest the people who killed Brianna Taylor like Whoa I never like good for them. I never thought. I would see a major league baseball franchise. Put something like that on social media on the day of opening day, but this is where we are, and if your ownership and you're against it. Sorry I mean we just need to get out of the way.

Fox Sports debuts virtual fans for MLB live broadcast

"Night Major League Baseball became the first major sport to go ahead and broadcast games. Weird state where people are thrilled to have entertainment as we're talking, we don't know how thing rated. Crates well. I find it particularly amusing. That Fox sports has said they will debut virtual fans in the live broadcast during this shortland twenty twenty season, so the people people who watch this well as seen CGI fans brought to them. You know with Hollywood special effects and I have to say I think it's an awfully good idea. Well, the initial broadcasts with the crowd noise has been a significant improvement over just watching a silent baseball field with no fans and you can hear. Hear the BASS coaches talking to each other like that's not good, but you know they're really trudging forward now. Baseball and other team sports are in this odd situation where there is so much money on the line that they kind of have to move forward, and they're doing it in whatever way they can, and the audience at least from the preliminary number suggests they want it to the ratings for some of the preseason scrimmages in these major markets were gigantic and. And Fox reported that they had sold out ninety percent of their ad inventory for these sixty game major league baseball season that is going to happen start over the next couple of months, and this is really the big test. Because yes, there's been tennis. There's been golf, but this is the big restart of team sports, and the NBA is going to follow, and they're all living in this bubble in Orlando Florida. Trying to get the NBA restarted Major League Baseball. Baseball is trying to restart even as one of the players on the Washington nationals tested positive for covid nineteen. The day that the season was set to start, so they're going to be these setbacks, but I don't see the League's canceling their seasons because of them, there's just so much money at stake. They're going to trudge forward and the big one. Coming up is the NFL and what they're going to do. The revenue for Fox sports for Turner for ESPN. Is desperately needed I. This is billions of dollars in lost money if they can't get these games up and start selling this. Thing so it's critical and. Obviously there's pressure all around to find a way to make it work and for the NFL which is by far the biggest draw in television, the training camps are set to start and the players union has agreed tentatively to a testing procedure, but there's no agreement on whether there's going to be fans at these games, and whether the season is going to come off like it would otherwise they cancelled some of the preseason games, but whether the actual season is. Is going to happen and how that's going to look is still a big question, and for television that billions and billions of dollars in revenue in the balance, and we're already seeing several college football leagues, either pushing their seasons or cancelling them entirely, and that's going to be the next domino effect. This virus cannot get under control in the next month or two. Then you're GonNa see College. Football pretty much eliminated for the fall in my in my prediction. Some leagues will probably try to continue, but ultimately if you can't keep college players safe, then you can't have a football season so. We'll see what the NFL does, but college football is a gigantic business as well on a more frivolous note. I will just observe that Fox. Had plans in terms of the baseball game to to thin the digital crowd. If there isn't like an eight to one game, and the crowd normally would go, so at least they're keeping that part real. Wow, can they make the dodgers? Fans leave in the seventh inning. I'm sure the virtual died. Here's fans will want to get on the freeway. Justice, the real ones

The Mookie Betts decision could haunt the Boston Red Sox for a long time

"It didn't take very long for mookie bats. He didn't even suit up for the regular season game for the dodgers yet. He's got that tonight against the giants, and they signed him to a twelve year extension for three hundred sixty five million dollars, so he's twenty seven years of age. This is a lifetime deal in La. Certainly Senate notice to the rest of the National League. We mean business here. We're going to be competitive for a long time. On the flip side if you're a red sox fan, because it feels like this was the the Red Sox said. Hey, you know what or last year. Hey, we're going to regroup and try to come back with a vengeance here in a couple of years and there was thought that maybe mookie Betts would end up back with the red sox. At some point. He started his career there. beloved there, but the front. Office didn't commit to him financially. And now the deal's going to be a referendum on both of these franchises. We move forward. If vets delivers the dodgers win, they're gonNA look great in the Red Sox are going to be reminded of the one that got away for at least the next decade, but you never know about these big deals I would never want to sign a player for more than five years. I would just be nervous about that. Just playing the odds of you staying healthy you staying competitive of the cost that goes along with that athlete there. But. We see this with a lot of these baseball players. You sign him up if it's Mike Trout and if it's Bryce, Harper if it's Garrett Cole you want to lock them in, and also there's going to be a question. mookie Betts, no longer in that hitter, friendly fenway park fans in both cities are going to keep a close eye on mookie and his performance in La. La should be one of the more intriguing subplots in this unusual season, and if you look at the numbers with Mukhi Bats, you know my feelings about Mookie Betts. He was must see TV when he was playing for the Red Sox and that will be the same implying the dodgers i. just don't know if you'll be the same style of player that he was at fenway. then. He's going to be that at dodger stadium if you start to look at the numbers since twenty sixteen where mookie Betts ranks. And I know that we think my trout, the coronation, your best player in baseball in the future hall of fame, absolutely no problem with that. mookie Betts. Was the east. Coast version of Mike Trout from the standpoint of he could do everything. and. He's getting paid to do everything now a runs. Nobody scored more runs since two thousand sixteen hits third doubles I. Even home runs. He's not a home run hitting guy. He's five nine one eighty and five nine, one eighty. Thank you thank you? Nineteenth in home runs. You look at RBI's. He's up there. He's you know. He's in the top ten in stolen bases batting average. He puts up numbers all around good fielder as well by all accounts, good clubhouse guy, so the dodgers are investing in somebody who will be the face of the franchise for years to

"He was like a man without a country. This is the business we've chosen. Apparently tried I was in the Hyman Roth situation and RJ. There was more news editor, the NFL not only whether or not be preseason games this year. There's also going to be mandatory facemasks. Facemasks required at all stadiums, but before we get there extended training camps without those preseason games this year in the NFL, I, as we're looking to exploit all things. At least you are I tend to, but I'm not as loud about it. What do you think the exploiting part of this I think it's going to hurt. The offenses RJ. No preseason games coupled with cupcake practices eighteen days without pads offense. Players aren't tough, enough or not tough enough offense is all about timing, and because of that I would look under in weeks one and two of the regular season I'm not sure I agree, so. Let me agree with the following and Jonas. We didn't have it because it wasn't even out yet. Yesterday. This acclimation period, or maybe we did in. Oh. I know what we didn't have yesterday. We had the acclimation period, but we didn't have that. They're cutting the beginning. Rosters from ninety, eighty. and to me. We've talked about it. Almost a third of the players, the NFL undrafted free agent. There's I. Think Michael Lombardi said he thought there'd be ten or so. These guys wouldn't even get on a roster this year. That will eventually make the league maybe next year, but it's a meaningful and in a way these are like the Rudy's. Of the NFL, and that's the best stories, not the guy. It was the first round pick, but the guy that tried and tried and tried. I hope the I. Hope the NFL. To something fun, there should be like a scholarship, but one year in baseball. Maybe with I'm not being serious as you gotTA. Keep these guys that are one level way. Engaged, that's your farm system. Start the XFL back up. But. To me, there's a Lotta lamentable things about the pandemic I think any pandemic, but. This Is Not maybe being discussed. But how do these players take a year now? keyboarding? OW, keep fit. And be ready for next year. Because if they're not there, their whole career would be lost. This is what I disagree with. Tackling. Is the thing that will suffer the most from lack of practice. If you're going seven on seven almost no pad. You're getting your timing I know it's a little different if you get your badge on. Tackling Harley at all so I think that offense is will be hurt. I think defense is will be hurt so general sloppy play, but here's the one offense at won't be hurt. Power Football. That's not worried about timing. Tennessee Baltimore now the defense is aren't ready to tackle in. These are the teams that you gotta tackle against the most so I'm looking to play on Baltimore Tennessee or power running teams because I think there are a score town. A ton against these defenses aren't ready to tackle ten seconds I agree I don't want any part of Derrick Henry if I'm a linebacker week one especially if you're not. Not Ready to.

All of a sudden now that's three runs out of what maybe nine or ten to thirty percent of the game swung on one call one one swinging the bat. An NBA woods the biggest thing that can happen on one play three pointer you make it three. Maybe shooting the made in Janet hockey same thing how goaltenders so MBA, the best team wins the most in baseball. The best team wins a lot. There is some luck, but there's even more luck when it's a sixty game season. What was Washington's record? The champion World Series last year after six games. They wouldn't have made the playoffs. No right so now does that mean? Washington wasn't the best team. It means that the six games wasn't enough to find out who the best team was sure. I'm Jay both straight out of Vegas, so you're in La Joan is. Dodgers are spending and we got some news on this. Maybe give the details mookie bats, and it just reinforces their spending crazy money. Yeah, and so the latest on the mookie Betts deal. It is a twelve year deal three hundred sixty five million dollar contract extension. You tack on that with the one year that he's currently getting. It's going to end up being thirteen years and three hundred ninety two million dollars for these star outfielder that they traded for from the Boston red. Sox Hold on saying. That's a lot. That is a lot. I can still remember. When Will Clark. You know, Mackenzie and research look. What that will Clark deal was I'm thinking. It was eighty nine ninety. "Do you think about the dodgers roster? They already have the reigning Mvp with cody. Bellinger they also have the former. Mvp AND CY young winner with Clayton Kershaw. So how all of these. Big noted players sort of fit together on one roster. They fit together like a lovely twenty six piece puzzle. And and that's the beauty of what the dodgers have done. They have constructed a roster. That really doesn't have. I'm not gonNA say any but doesn't have clearly visible flaws in that particularly goes for the everyday lineup. I mean you can put any number of players that any number of positions you can cody bellinger and Centerfield. One day playing first base. The next day. Compla- Max Muncie at first base and we can shift them over to second where. Oh by the way Gavin Lux whose top-five prospect and all baseball is GONNA play as well but if he's not there and if there's a left on the mound you can put key Gate Hernandez in their second base and he absolutely destroys lefthanded pitching. He also can play left field. Maybe a little bit of Centerfield but you've got AJ pollock and left field to you. Know if there's a right hander. Anyone Output Jack Petersen in there he crushes right handed pitching in. You've got cory seager. Shortstop Justin Turner Third. Will Smith is going to be a star behind the plate in bets guy in right field. You're talking about an incredible group of talent. But you're also talking about an incredible payroll that just was able to recklessly go. Add mookie betts because they wanted to when you look at a team like the orioles this year spending what forty five million dollars on their entire payroll and the dodgers are spending close to two hundred twenty. I mean it's just that level of imbalance as the rich seemingly get richer. Is that good for baseball. Yeah it's not great. It's not great but that's what happens when you have an UNCAPPED SYSTEM. That's also what happens when you're in a sport where money doesn't necessarily equal success if the dodgers just went out spending money like literally that's all they did. We've seen that before. We saw that with the New York Yankees throughout the two thousand. Ten's didn't work and and I think the Yankees really change their mindset and started understand what the dodgers have long understood. Which is you cannot be successful doing what you do. If you're not developing players from within if you're not counter-balancing those larger salaries with minimum salaries from players that you have developed whether it's via the draft or international free agency. You have to have a balance of those two and when you see the number of players that the dodgers have developed it shows just how great their farm system really has been for everything that we've talked about the greatness of the when you look at the National League across the board when teams should the dodgers the most worried about no one. I mean. Look when you have a system in which there is a five game series. You should be afraid of everyone but over the course of one hundred sixty two game season. There's nobody who's going to challenge the dodgers. There's just not I mean the Arizona diamondbacks Jason a really good team. They're probably going to be double digits behind the dodgers in the National League West. Even if you go out east let's look at the defending world series champions The Washington nationals. Good the really. Good the got Max Shurer. They've got Stephen Strasburg. And Patrick Corbin Audible Sanchez in the rotation. They beat the dodgers last year. Even though they didn't have as much talent. That's the trouble with going as far in on. Mookie Betts as the dodgers. Did I absolutely think it was the right move? I absolutely think that it was at the right time but in the end when we look back on the two thousand twenty season there is a possibility and not an insignificant possibility either that the dodgers lose in the division series like they did last year and at that point with bet steel. Be Worth it. I mean the answers gotta be no right. Well let me counter that though I mean the answer is no anytime you acquire player. Sure I understand world series or bust but the dodgers are making money. Anyway they WANNA look at it so they're putting themselves in the best chance to try and win a World Series Championship. Is it as simple for the organization as World Series or bust? Yes I think it is at this point I think. The dodgers judge their seasons where they are right now with the talent. They have based on whether they have a gold ring encrusted with diamonds. That they're giving out on opening day the next year or whether they don't I think it is that binary and certainly you can take positives out of a season which you don't win a world series and have good feelings about the things that you achieve that accomplished but if you were to give truth serum to everybody in that organization. I think everyone would say we. WanNa win and we want to win. Now if you had to decide to to come in with an educated opinion and you're risking my house on it not yours my house on our friendship and it's dodgers of the field to win it all this year. Who who you take it. I'm GonNa take your question and twisted a little. If you had one team to choose to win the world series this year. Who WOULD IT BE? My answer would be the Los Angeles dodgers..

"Jeff Passan how are you doing on this fine wonderful day? I am both fine and wonderful Jason. Thank you Jeff. Passan covers major league baseball for ESPN. He's been in Florida and Arizona reporting on Spring Training. So we're GONNA talk dodgers today and they might be the biggest story because of what they did this off season that starts with the massive trade with the Red Sox if you had to give the mookie Betts trade story a tagline mookie betts the dodgers blank. It happened then. It didn't happen and then it happened again and the fact that it happened. I think really salvaged in offseason for the dodgers where their fans felt like they were. Fiddling is Rome Burns and it was interesting because if the dodgers had not gone out and traded for mookie Betts this winter or the spring as it were they still would have been the best team in the National League and they would have been the best team in the National League probably by a pretty healthy margin but to go out and get a guy who is arguably the second best player in baseball really speaks to just how important winning now is for this organization. I wanted to give everybody a peek behind the curtain of Jeff Passan. So walk me through those sort of the moment. You've I started hearing that this could be on the horizon. Well off season. There was a feeling that somebody big was going to get moved and you know as as time ticked away going towards spring training. The sentiment was that that was less and less likely. I remember getting a text and it was very simple. It said mookie dodgers traction and when you get something like that you know the alarm bells. Go off a little bit. I started poking around hearing. Yeah there may actually be some legs this deal but there were so many different iterations of it in terms of water the dodgers gonNA TAKE BACK IS PRICE. GonNa go with him. What sorts of prospects would they give up? We're following a developing story. That could be a blockbuster in baseball. The dodgers are in deep discussions to acquire star right fielder. Mookie betts from the Red Sox and bit of a snag in the mookie. Betts deal to the dodgers. The blockbuster three-way trade has been held up because of questions surrounding me health of at least one player. Pitching Prospect Bruce. Dr Red Sox didn't like the medical congressional who had Tommy John Surgery in the past. It started to come together and then obviously it looked like it might fall apart for a moment. What your thoughts. When it looked like the deal was sort of breaking up. The dodgers were not going to let mookie. Betts play for another team this year. Even as Boston and Minnesota we're negotiating and trying to figure out their end of what was supposed to have been a three way trade and when that did not happen. The dodgers stepped in and said you know what we are going to make this deal happen and it's exactly what they did and that bets blockbuster. It's reworked but done Boston agreeing to send two thousand eighteen. Al Mvp Mookie. Betts pitcher David price to the dodgers for outfielder. Alex do go. And prospects jeeter downs encounter Wong. Boston also said we've talked a little bit about the deal but I wanNA talk about Mukhi specifically what makes him so. Unique is player issues graded everything he hits. For average he hits for power. He's an excellent base runner. He's arguably the best right fielder defensively in the game. He's a good clubhouse presence. Nice guy what can you bring to this team this franchise the help and finally bring a championship to La? I'm GonNa do everything I can bring. My energy reminds Simon Work. Work hard Trying to rub off that way. I know there's a lot of guys that work hard and do everything they can't hear and so I'm just GonNa be here at onto that. Should make our case for twenty twenty world series for sure. You look at Mookie Betts and you try to find fault with him and you just can't I mean the worst thing you can say about. Mookie Betts is. He hasn't been a superstar in the postseason. He's going to get a chance to play in the postseason again this year health permitting. And if he's out there in October on the biggest stage with free agency about to hit I feel like that is his time to absolutely shine and show everybody why he believes that he's going to be baseball second. Four hundred million dollar player next to my trap. And what's interesting is that you said earlier. The dodgers fans were restless even though they would have gone into the season likely as the best team without Mookie Betts. So why was it actually necessary to acquire mookie? It wasn't necessary optimal. Sometimes when you understand just how good your talent is and what the landscape is across the rest of baseball. You realize that it's worth going for it that sitting around and trying to get as much surplus value as you can might not win you a championship now. Trading for Mookie. Betts might not win you championship either but you certainly have a better chance at doing so when you have him in the middle of a lineup. That already is pretty devastating. I promised we wouldn't talk entirely about the Astros but there is an element of this conversation. That is Astros based or at least saw signs dealing based when you look at the way the seventeen and eighteen world series went down. How much does that play into the way that they approached the off season this year? Yeah I don't think it's an element I think it's a large part of it. Honestly I mean let. Let's look at what the dodgers have done. They've won seven straight National League West Championships and they bowed out in the S. The first time around in two thousand thirteen and they did it in the lcs again in two thousand sixteen when you get to two thousand seventeen and you're playing in the world series and you have a team that's one hundred four games and you feel like they are every bit as good as the Astros and then they go and lose in game seven at the Houston. Astros have claimed that city's first ever World Series Championship. That is a gut punch. And when you come back the next year and you run into a team in the Boston Red Sox that has just buzzsaw through the playoffs. You know that hurts to the Boston. Red Sox baseball all season. They have water at a celebration begins and now to look back and know that the two thousand seventeen astros had spent the season and according to Rob. Manfred the playoffs as well cheating. We have a developing story in major league. Baseball has launched an investigation into allegations. That the Astros Centerfield camera to help steal signs during their two thousand seventeen championship brunt and to look at the accusations and allegations against the two thousand. Eighteen Boston Red Sox and to believe that at some point in the near future maybe at the end of this week we're going to have a better accounting of what they potentially did. Mlb says it will investigate allegations that the red sox used their video replay system to steal sides during the world series winning season in two thousand eighteen. That hurts and that sort of thing that sticks in your psyche as much as you want to wipe it out of your mind and say there's nothing we can do. There's no sense in looking back. How can you not you just said it? Sometimes it's best to move forward. Is there still value for the dodgers continuing to air their grievances continuing to shed with it? I mean as a reporter who loves players speaking their minds. Of course there's a wonderful intentive cody bellinger and Justin Turner in particular or quite outspoken. On the topic. I mean these guys are cheating for three years altuve as stolen. Mvp from judge in seventeen. Everyone knows they stole the ring from us. It's hard to feel like they earned it and they earned the right to be called champions. I I know personally. I lost respect for those guys. Everyone in the show in the big leagues lost respect for those guys. I think it's pretty obvious. That whatever the commissioner thought he did he didn't do it very well. They said all of the things that so many players around baseball felt but they said them from the perspective of someone who is actually deeply harmed by this to have the ability to win that championship. For what would have been the first time in almost three decades at that point taken away from you really still angers the dodgers and brought them out. Maybe a strong anyone around the game. I think they've said their piece at this point and I think they need to lead their game. Speak the rest.

We'll tell you about all those things in just a moment. Take More your calls sedan with a year on seven ten. ESPN spion we've awoken Labor nation on the phone lines and on the tweets at Sodano. We'll get to your calls in his Second Tim Coaching GonNa stop by in less than fifteen minutes. We'll talk to him about this Crazy Major League Baseball playoff proposal and the dodgers and mookie Betts and all that stuff so let me give people real quick before we get to the calls. What Major League Baseball is trying to do? It's just ridiculous like there's really no other way to describe this so this was reported I By The New York Post and then confirmed by ESPN. The League is weighing a move that would increase the total of playoff teams in each league to seven three division winners four wildcards. Currently they have what five wildcards that will no five told a final team correct that this would potentially start in twenty twenty two the post reports that the best team in the League would receive a bye into the division series so if the dodgers have the best record in the nationally they get a by. They don't have to play the wild card around okay fair enough while the two remaining division winners the two seat in the three seat and the wildcard team with the best record of the four would each host Host all games of a best of three opening-round series. I already hate that. I actually think casual fans like the one game scenario. I know baseball people hated hated and teams. Hate it because like you play one sixty to play one that stinks but hey this is about growing the sport okay. So I don't like the best of three. I don't mind that if they're GONNA do best of three that they all our home games because there's less travel but I don't love the idea that here's the rest also. This is the kicker also the top seeds in in the opening round so this would be the two seed because the dodgers in this case in this example would have a by right. The top seeds in the opening round will reportedly get to choose their opponent among along the lower wildcard teams. So let's say the dodgers are the one seed they have a bye to the vision round. Let's just say the nationals are the two seat they get to pick the team they WANNA a play. That just seems like something. A fifth grader came up with sorry. How about you just play? Who the were the seventh seed is or whatever whatever right like this isn't all that complicated anyway so we'll talk to Kirch in about that stuff in a second? WHO's I've been on? Hold the longest here. We've got van Fontana what's been going anyway so two points quickly about coups one As for the a Ah Hollywood lifestyle in Romney. Yeah some people can do that in compartmentalizing multitask but you know you have to have the maturity inexperienced cycling on the point of Frank Vogel right in place for I think the example Charles Barkley point out about Collini pop. When did he know collide become a good player? You said you know once he learned that when we call place Liam didn't let Sibley mean team needs to score shoot. Just make the right play and I'm not sure the cowboys make that point where he realized when they call A.. Place for them not necessarily meant for you to shoot at school but make the right play at the end of the day a basket of the basket regardless to whether it's it was listed that early on I think that was clearly a problem but I mean if you hear what he said I mean he says that he under I mean I mean whether he implemented is one thing to your your point. Thank you for the call van but he seems to at least outwardly expressed that he understands that. Yeah you know Not just trying to impact the game Different elements You know obviously it's a tough to come by you know certain touches in no shots but No for me is all about making the right play no courses. Oh says he doesn't really care about how many points every night just wants to be efficient and You know major I play so they like. He's he's saying Whoa exactly what you said van now again he needs to implement that. And it's not always as easy as you think because it's Chris McGee followed up in that interview on spectrum. I'm sports he said Yo it it's not. It's it's a challenge. Sometimes when you don't know how many shots you're getting and again you guys got to put yourself elf-backed into this mode of how young people feel. Young people are out to try to prove themselves for multiple reasons ego vanity the finances though he makes less than two million dollars a year yes. I know the championships come that. He'll probably get paid eight but he also needs to put a certain threshold of numbers in his mind right but he is willing at least outwardly to express that doesn't matter to him at the moment that he understands ends that now will the championship come. We'll have to see they've got one team. I think in their way and it happens to be the team. You know down the hall Steven was saying he doesn't believe in this roster. I was so disappointed. They let Marcus Morris. Land with the clippers. Let me tell you something right now all year long the clippers have privately said this. And you know I've told you this off the Air Max on numerous occasions. The clippers of says Steven Stephen A.. We got five dogs. I don't know if they got one. That's what they said about the lake. We're talking dawgs Marut route whatever. They got a prime ad. Now look maybe they've got enough guys to throw it. Those guys particularly Lebron like the they may have that they stop and Lebron but they can make it more difficult than most teams have particularly in the past. Tim Team is in Canada. Are you in Canada today. I'm good Sir we're in Canada. Edmonton Alberta Excellent Koto. So here I bet get yourself some Tim. Horton's coffee man So I got two points one on the Calculus Ma Tau Kouzmines. What twenty four twenty? Three twenty five. I believe forty five. It's he's in his third year this whole notion of. It's his third year. How many always Jason Tatum? Twenty four by the way twenty four when Jason. TATUM is younger but Jason. TATUM has also been given the reigns as a rookie. And that wasn't the case with Kyle Kuzma and you know. No one's told Jason Tatum. You have to fit a role they build around Jason Tatum Jalen Brown but the media did that. I don't think anyone on the Lakers. Call coups McHugh are now start auction the media at the George so but what I mean by the way. He's talking though Tim like he's is just saying like the coach. Says you know it's not about scoring all the time like that. That is literally discussing a role not not a third option in situation yet. But we're seeing this now. I towards the after the trade deadline Lebron I. I can probably Lebron's not that happy that collar still around. There's tons of options. Perhaps for personally I think they should still get this three options. I think one Jeff Green to if What's the Clippers Digest? Dock bar traded marcus. If he can get bought out I think they should go after Moore harvest and last but not least. I don't mind the dion waiters..

"dodgers" Discussed on The Kevin Sheehan Show

"Here's a Mount Rushmore and he is one of the greatest hockey players certainly of his time or you know it was the Mount Rushmore. Just athletes coaches out of the equation. Are you gonna Ami Bond Walter Johnson because I yes Jesus. How could you not Sammy Baugh. There's no Washington redskins without Sammy Baugh he wants to NFL Championships in every list of great great nfl players he's in the top ten every list and Walter Johnson only the greatest right hander and the history of Major League Baseball pitchers. I know you gotta leave them off because they didn't happen. You were born you know since you were born before seeing they don't count well. That's your thing before. She doesn't in count okay fine then. Let's so if it's if it's Sammy Ball Walter Johnson Alex veteran then we can just right now. It's a very quick debate who would be the fourth and final one on that Mountain Mount Rushmore. That's that's a tough one at a time gotta be. It's it's got to be a player from one of the pro teams. Yeah I get that. I understand that it's got to be one of the major teams. Take Gimme Johan. Oh Hand Kroth now. I mean look people would say Rigaud. I think I think people might say Rigaud. The people might say Darryl Green. I think people might say Darryl Green there. There's another one that I immediately popped into my head and that is Elvin Hayes I. I don't think anyone's going to buy any. I don't care whether anybody else buys into it. I'm telling you what I think. Elvin Hayes your. NBA He's the greatest NBA player in the history of the city Eddie. I get that but you're mount. Rushmore is a pebble. If you put Elvin Hayes Oh okay so but the just you would put him ahead of John. Wall Gilbert arenas and WES unseld. Wouldn't you know I wouldn't put my son upsell. MVP and rookie involved here in Baltimore. Okay Okay in Baltimore. Yeah I. I wouldn't put him ahead of West. Okay so and when you do your Baltimore Mount Rushmore you can put wes unseld on there with cal ripken in Johnny United States and I'm sure I can come up with the fourth year if you give me some time. Eddie emerged but I yeah Rigaud and probably Darryl Green because Darryl Green was probably a better all-time great at his position now they're both they're both equal green and rigour probably equal and I mentioned this you previously I'm always fascinated. Why can Houston doesn't get he's do as one of the all-time great redskins he is consistently. Lee when you see the list of the greatest safeties the NFL his he's in the top five an and there's no other player in Redskins history other than Sammy Baugh that that you can say that about no you're right absolutely and I think he played twelve years in the NFL seven of which were the redskins his yeah yeah he doesn't he hasn't got his do absolutely yeah but not on Mount Rushmore right here on my route Mount Rushmore radio for no not no not on my Mount Rushmore of Communist. You are and sports talk hosts yes. You are all right real quickly before we run today. I do have a smell test. Pick a Tommy. I think I've told you this. Maybe it didn't the other day. The smell test is on a bit of a a bit of a heater thirty a and one over the last three weeks. It's all time I was twelve and three last week nine yeah no two weeks ago nine five and one in between so that's thirty eight and one over the last thirty six fifteen in one for the season season so I am. I'm helping people pay some bills in a lot more I like Seattle tonight laying the point and a half at home against the rams. I I don't like an errand. I don't know if you feel the same way. I don't like these Thursday night games. I think they're very unpredictable. When it comes to betting them but there's a lot of public action on the rams and and they're super sharp action from what I was told late last night on the seahawks and SORTA goes hand in hand with what I've been thinking I pick Seattle to win the division and I thought the rams might have a step back year. maybe a playoff year but not as good as last year and I think we've seen some chinks the rams armor you know last week definitely. Tampa Bay by the way Tommy just as quickest. Oh my God we didn't do the NFL power rankings today we haven't done. NFL power rankings cue up the outgoing. Yes we are going to know. I'm not doing it why I'm not doing it because I don't feel like doing it they. Do you know how hard it is to do this week. I'm not doing it. Get prepared right now. You're going to do IT I. I'm not doing it. You're doing it. I'm making you do it. I'm not I'm not doing yes you are. You're going to do it all right fine. You don't have to do it. I I was just going to tell you that I think after new England Kansas City. It actually gets very hard this week. It's not as obvious it's as it's been because the rams got beat fifty five to forty last week by Tampa Bay and what I was going to say before. We basically excused ourselves from doing. NFL power rankings today is that the buccaneers right now or a vegas favorite. I mean the the Vegas oddsmakers loved themselves. Some Tampa Bay buccaneers they they're they're. They're the numbers on futures their line this week. At New Orleans is three. It's super short. You saw it open at five and a half six and it's down to three and a half three yeah. I think that's a couple of weeks ago number. No I'm pretty sure that was Sunday's. There's no way we had a nine point move from Sunday not nine three point move. I five and a half say oh that's right you. Orleans for six hundred three okay mic my fault. Yes so yeah. That's very possible. I've seen Erin on some of these sites. They've had some lines from a couple of weeks ago that they've indicated was the opening line. I only WanNa look at the Sunday. You know the the late late Sunday night opening line to see the movement is not from a few weeks ago but anyway vegas loves Tampa they in the buccaneers they they got some talent. They've got a coach offensively. They've got a defensive coach in bowls. they go to New Orleans. You're you're next Washington redskins head coach. I predict predicted that to Thanks for listening to the show. Did you see I. I think I had that before you. I don't think he did this. This is your got it for me but that's okay. You can't remember anything. You've got to write your off my Mount Rushmore. I'm good. I don't WanNa be on yours figured out. An offer book. Put up a list for redskins coach week one of next year. The favourite isn't debate coach but it's not Todd Bowles. I know I know it's Byron left-wing. Oh well interesting yeah yeah like we're not a lot of less out there that have falls on it. Yeah I well the reason I said it and you grabbed onto it and ran with it is because Joe because Joe Gibbs likes todd odd bowls a lot and I think we both believe the Dan's got one place to turn when he gets rid of everybody hopefully in that's coach. Joey just doesn't have many people people that he can rely on or go to do realize this is not. This is not true. I do realize what I didn't talking about. Todd Bowles Goals as the next head coach for a while now. I've been talking about Todd Bowles as the next head coach when he was coaching the jets I was talking about todd bowls as the defensive coordinator a great defensive coordinator and a guy of loved for I don't know four years now and you definitely you grabbed onto that that trend which is fine. You do a lot of times. It's Okay Todd Bowles at the next head coach when he was still playing for the redskins. I was talking about todd. Bowles is the next redskins head coach when they drafted Todd Bowles back in one thousand nine hundred eighty six or whatever your was all right. I'm done with you. anyway. Seattle is a smell test minus one and a half tonight I'm pretty sure the smell test is gonNA crash and burn this week Aaron. You know why I 'cause I love the board and that is probably a kiss of death the kiss of death for the weekend but stay tuned tomorrow tune in tomorrow because I'll have my complete smell test for the weekend. Seattle tonight minus one and a half by the way I'd lean South Alabama as well against Georgia Georgia southern but that's not an official smell smell test. Pick Tommy. Thank you appreciate it enjoy tonight. Enjoy tomorrow night. and I will talk. Maybe I'll I'll read your column that you just wrote and everybody re Tommy's columns. Follow me on twitter and you can link right to the columns from there but we'll talk together on the show on Tuesday but I'm sure we'll talk to you before then all right boss take care if if you're listening to us on Itunes or apple podcasts race review a salsa subscribed that helps it doesn't cost you thing and remind people that would like to listen to the podcast asked that they can listen to it on the Kevin Sheehan show dot com also just a reminder. I'm back on radio on. ESPN NOT ESPN nine eighty the team nine eighty right which by the way we're also F._M. Right now ninety nine point five which is F._M. Signal that some of you will get perfectly in some of you won't but Amman seven to ten A._M. In the morning have a great day. Enjoy the nets game tonight..

"dodgers" Discussed on The Kevin Sheehan Show

"The guy's is not putting in the work. The guy's not getting any better the guy's a major long term project if we put him on the field. We can't operate a professional national offense. We can't evaluate other people offensively not to mention the fact. He's GonNa get himself. Hurt you know and I don't think that they would tell me that I I haven't heard that. I don't think they would say it to you. I don't think they would say to us now. It doesn't mean that they don't think he's a project but but there's gotta be something that Jay Gruden can put out there Ford Twain Haskins to get him live bullet real game experience over these last three quarter last three quarters of the season there so many things that can be done with these young quarterbacks you cut the playbook in half ghetto if reading reading defenses and getting them in the right protection schemes are so important they can go with nothing but hot routes you know they can they can they move away from max-protect and having throw hot on every throw so he's not literally reading out. Is it cover one. Is it cover to cover three there lots of things is that Jay gruden could do you know to make him more comfortable and to get him playing time the rest of the way. That's my big problem with this again again. If somebody called me up after hearing me say this on radio at your hearing me say this on the podcast from the organization and say CAF off the record look he he he can't he can't do it. I mean plus. He's not putting in the work. He's not he's not. He's not here early leaving late. He's he's not putting in all the work. He's not getting it. He can't function you know. He's a great kid but he can't function right now. He's he's. He's a year overweigh minimum unless I heard that I want him to play okay. I'll try to look. Here's here's here's here's the problem that that that that on countering you know. I get my thoughts in between the time you start talking and the time that you're dod so you better start writing them down. That's what I do when you're talking. I'm I'M GONNA have to start writing them. That's what I do when you're talking. I write them down. Look Erin. Look at all my notes notes as I'm writing down when Tom he's talking 'cause. I don't forget you. GotTa have a pattern paper a pen and paper in front of you. Trust me drone on and onto who occasionally yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah okay here. Elba quarterbacks that you brought up before I think this is a difference. There weren't three choices. Is there to be made. There's three choices for Jay. Gruden with the Redskins know if there was no case keenum or if there was no Cole McCoy this this would be a lot easier but but any most of the quarterbacks that you brought up like the quarterbacks are usually thrown into play. The coaches don't don't usually have three choices. There's two choices so I think that complicates everything now. The other thing is if Jay Gruden Star Art Him against the Patriots is his agenda to damage the kid or if say Gruden doesn't start him against Haskins askins against the Patriots is his agenda to hold him back. You'll hear people make both cases. You'll hear people say well if he starts them against the Patriots. He's putting them out there to get killed. He's put like like Louis. Riddick said he's putting them out there to fail. You know so I mean the thing I I don't know. I'm Jay can't win if he starts them. He's got an agenda if he doesn't start 'em he has an agenda and this is. Dr And that's and that act nothing the older kid may have nothing to do but driving that narrative but people around him do and that's what's pissing. Jay grew off aw that makes a lot of sense to me the whole you know. He's he's pissed off because you know that in that last comment you know aw there. He's going to be wrong either. Way Is is sensitive to the criticism which by the way what you're saying he probably thinks are coming from people people that are close to the kid and and probably people in in its own building yeah and maybe even people in his own building and for him. He's like look doc. I've I've been a coach forever. I've coached quarterbacks forever. I know what I'm doing. I know how to handle these situations and he's probably very frustrated and by the the way I think your point and I wrote this went down as you were going on and on I wrote down the three choices thing is. I actually think that's a really good good point. I would just say to you what I said to you. In the summer. I get rid of the third choice so it's not a temptation like this. I this was a mistake to have a third choice. Yes I mean. There's no debate. There's no argument you know. It's either one guy or the other and I mean the three. Troy is particularly one of those choices Cole McCoy. You know that piece of candy and I'd say Gouden can ignore complicates everything all right well. You're not going to be here or be back on the show until Tuesday the answer this question. Do you think Colt McCoy will be the starter Sunday. Oh yes absolutely I absolutely do and and I can't believe I'm not going to be there for it. I I've been there for it. It'll be funny because if he survives the game which by the way we'll get odds on tomorrow as to whether or not he'll actually take every snap and the game. He'll be looking for you in the press conference afterwards. Where's My dad. Where's the Tommy you know. I forget if we did this together on Tuesday. But can you imagine if he starts. Colt McCoy and McCoy puts up a two two hundred ninety yard three touchdown no pick day to score thirty one in their game late with a chance to beat the Patriots. Oh Oh yeah we talked about this and we talked about how how unbelievable I mean the most unbelievable part I would miss that I mean I you know I mean but but we both know that that's that's you know like you know not all fairytales and happy endings and this one's not gonna end the happy ending recall what unfortunate what if Sunday the nats win the Redskins win and the mystics out what is the Washington Times and Washington Post handle their front page while the Redskins are clearly inside on page two. Oh that's that's the obvious thing if they beat. I'm kidding. I'm kidding what what's one of them would be on the front page of the paper. Not just the front pages not the sports section I if the Redskins beat the Patriots there on page one what if the nats eliminate the dodgers Sunday Sunday night and they win the series then they're on pace one and then what is what does the sports section look like well well then I. I don't know that's the post for sex. I don't care about this. Why would I care about their sports. I don't know I don't know what else do you have the caps one last night. I watched. I actually watched a lot of the game. You know what I mean. I love Jobe locker. They're awesome. It's such a great impairing and it has been for so long. Just like buck and Phil were and I and I enjoy watching them and you know I don't watch a lot of regular season hockey but last night I I was watching because the Saint Louis had the banner hanging thing from their Stanley Cup. It was a year later from when the caps did it you know last year for their season opener and and I watched a lot of the game I mean the American League game jumped out real quickly with Diaz hitting that home run in the first and then hitting home run in the third and that game was over ver- early almost like Milwaukee was overly except Tampa never made a run back but I watched it and I first of all. I'm saying this to Erin and I know you don't care about the stuff tommy the NBC family of networks to such good job with hockey. It's just perfect and doc. Emrick is just so awesome to listen to call the game but anyway they they they got they got an overtime winner from Verona to win the game. That's all I have on that game ovechkin and I in watching the game it. It seemed to me that the caps dominated the blues but they went to overtime in one the game anyway a lot of people picking the caps ups Tommy to be deep into the postseason. If not a Stanley Cup winner well okay. That's it yeah I mean I mean come on. I mean what am I supposed to decide. Oh you don't play you would have put you in a breakdown their third line no out in the first round last year what everyone thought they were good to dominate. I mean we're we're we're so don't talk to me about by the way you'll love it. You'll love this and I'm GonNa find it real quickly. I got one of those tweets from one of those people that didn't like that. I said I'm not a big caps fan which I I don't know if I said it with you and Tuesday or yesterday on the podcast you send you send it with me on Tuesday. I've said it a million times. I'm that's of the four teams that's the one that I don't have a lot of passion for not a big hockey guy and I've just never been a huge caps fan like I don't sit there and live and die on everything so anyway I i. I'm looking for it and I can't find it but basically I got one of those tweets. It said I heard what you said about the caps if you're going to care so little and you're not going to root caps. I'M NOT GONNA listen to your show anymore in one of those and Gosh. I hope you reach out to that person. Yeah smooth that over. I I did I I I. I basically said I'm not going to you know it's it's it look. You don't have a rooting interest in any of the local teams there are there are other talk show host. I know one on your station. That is a forty niners fan not a Redskins Fan in. We've had that at our station before that that's not white the people I mean I think it is a benefit personally in local sports talk radio to be a fan of the teams and to really have an understanding ending of a of the teams you know and I am. I do have an understanding the root for every other team very passionately but for whatever reason I've just never been a big hockey fan. I love a playoff hockey but basically I just said look. I'M NOT GONNA fake emotional investment in a team that I don't have it for you. Know the they're good team. I love playoff off hockey. I just don't have the same feeling when they lose or win that I do for other teams and whatever he he got upset. He said Rub them the wrong way. I'm sorry about that but I that's the way I feel. I did watch the game last night. However I am amazed by Ovechkin who at thirty four years old and count it out pretty much before the Stanley Cup finals in the Stanley Cup winning season has probably played at some of his best hockey the last two seasons and it looks like you know based on last night. He may be in line for another great year. He's Altana title rate. DC Athlete Right. He's he's very pleased to being Mount Rushmore as an all-time DC athlete. Oh I think he is on Mount Rushmore. I mean he's it's not the greatest athlete in the history of the town but he's he's among he is..

"That's Kevin in DC after you go to mybookie. Dot Ag you play you win. You get paid. We'll get to the redskins shortly and what Jay Gruden Gordon said yesterday because it certainly would appear that we are headed towards a colavero start on Sunday against the Patriots but I wanted to ask you about not something because I talked about it on the radio show this morning and I didn't see all of this stuff until late yesterday about Tony Kornheiser comments about the front page of the Sports Section in the post yesterday so let me catch everybody up to speed the post yesterday the print edition front page page of its sports section if you didn't see it they put the mystics game two loss to Connecticut at the very top of the sports sections top page front page with the headline Della John Hurt as son draws even now for those of you. That don't know what that means. That's about the mystics best player. Elaine de la Don. She was the league. MVP The sun is the Connecticut Sun. That's the team. The mystics are right now playing in the WNBA finals. I'm being in specific about that because I think there are a lot of people that actually don't know what's going on in the WNBA finals but the mystics are really good team. The series is dead even at one game apiece and they played game two on Tuesday night same night that the nats were playing the brewers in the wildcard game and on Wednesday morning the Post Post put the Mystic Connecticut game at the top or above the full. That's what they call it right. Tommy above the and for the rest of the front page the sports section and probably two thirds the remaining two thirds of that front page was the nets game where they had the headline won- John for the money is in one for one Soto in his big hit cer- Tony had a problem with the choice that I guess the Editors Make Tommy's at the editor's that make these decisions yes. They do okay so on his podcast yesterday. He said it's insane that the Washington Post stripped stripped that mystics game across the top the nets got the bigger play and he's saying that they got more of that front page but you've gotta be kidding me and I said I yeah I mean. You've got to be kidding me. You know he just didn't think that the mystics deserve that by the way he drew a ton of criticism for those comments including including a comment from a reporter at the Post. Her name is able Wallace. I don't know what she writes but she responded on twitter saying Imagine Agean watching the nets win this is in response to Tony's response imagine watching the nets win and feeling those beautiful feelings in seeing that giant happy picture on the front page age and then thinking you know it soured this the presence of women how utterly pathetic is what Able Wallace. She's a reporter for the Post. I think what she tweeted out. I know Tony Pretty well. I can guarantee you that Abe completely missed the point. It had nothing to do with women it had to do with which which one of these two teams deserve the above the fold headline positioning. He would have felt the same way had. DC united been above the fold versus the the nats off of the wild card win being in that spot in my view Tommy. He's a hundred percent right now. I don't understand the inner workings of this and this is going to rely on you to help me here but from the perspective of being a reader being post subscriber. I still get the post delivered now. I don't always read the print edition I read the online edition probably more but I love Sunday mornings with my Washington Post sports section and I get the New York Times delivered on Sundays indies well with coffee and breakfast and a Bagel. I liked that I liked the addition. I still get USA Today's Friday edition because I'd like to spend section in USA. I'd say today like to spread it out even though it's been reduced to like two and a half pages but my perspective is from what my expectations of the post would be and that maybe by the way at complete odds with what makes better business sense what makes better editorial sense. I don't know but I would have thought that in ah I it's not what I would think I know that there is a significantly bigger audience for the nets wildcard game then for the mystics. WNBA championship game. I promise you that there is no chance that the number of people interested in that mystics game isn't a tiny fraction of the number of people interested in the Nats brewers game so I ask you. Was that a mistake. I don't know if it was a mistake. It's it wouldn't have been again. It's a judgment call so I don't think it's a mistake I mean Dan Steinberg tweeted something up and I thought that was pretty accurate. What have I didn't read it. Basically he said you know if they made these judgments solely on who would read stories then they'd run. Dallas cowboys stories and car crashes in the paper and that would be it. I mean if you may if you made decisions based John. You know how many clicks us that the the online sir but how many eyeballs you get to a story you know you. The cowboys crashes. That's one piece of this like if you're just in it to draw eyeballs okay. That's a good answer editorial royal standpoint from an editorial standpoint I mean do you really come to the conclusion that the mystics get top billing over the nets winning a wildcard game. No no no that that's but again it's it's not there. I don't know if there's a right or wrong. It's a judgment call in something like this. Servian look I I am. I I have led the parade against the idea that we have some kind of obligation to cover women's sports because it's the right thing to do. I mean I've I've let that I mean we basically this is. This is a business. It's not a nonprofit you know operation and you know so I I'm all in. I understand what Tony saying and I agree with them to some extent there. There can't be any debate that it's not even close that what the more significant story is to readership or the nationals over domestics six but I don't have as big a problem with the placement as he does. I don't think it's insane I think and and part of what's going on here is I know I know the way the editors think particularly editors at the post and they have an agenda that comes through I've seen with Olympic Coverage I've seen it before with other coverage. you know it's just I mean they. They have a certain feeling that they have some kind of greater duty here in terms and and it makes them look good among their other editors in the business at the New York Times and the La Times which is all they really compete with in terms of that so there's a lot going on here here. I don't think it's insane. I think it was the wrong decision but again. It's a judgment call Aaron. What did you say I was saying. I don't know if that was much as editorial all decision to put it top as it was designed decision with with the way they laid that out and especially with that weird at across the bottom which I find more offensive than anything was the ad there's the bottom injure so was just a big ad across the bottom took up some space but the way they did with the kind of three quarters of a bit on the nats and then just kind of that top thing I it seems like the post is socially the person general when they had the layout they put the one smaller story up top and then the rest the page is the one big story so I feel like. It's almost a design decision. More than an editorial decision may be right. Maybe right away ads ads on on the front pages of of sections. That's only something that's happened in in in the last ten or twelve years or so maybe longer but I mean for years ears you would never put an ad on the front page of the sports section but now I mean I'm surprised they know put them on the front page period. I think he would have been. I think you you may have been okay with the insane. Description had been like AFIFA qualifier that they put up there had been soccer. You probably would have been more of upset. I don't know I mean here's the here's the bottom line in this day and age. I don't really care 'cause I don't use the print. Edition is the primary way I don't use the post. Sports Section is away to really get news anymore. I mean it's it's too outdated and even online with all due respect because I like a lot of columnists. I Love Barry. I love Dave Shannon. I Love Sally you know and I like. I like a many of their columnists but I don't post doesn't break stories. They're beat reporters really don't break a lot of stories when it comes to the teams that I care about you. Get more of that from you know some of the bloggers and some of the people on Sports Talk Radio or some of the people you know that are you know beat reporters sports talk radio stations or in town than you do from the post but I do like the columns but I didn't see it before the radio show and before the podcast yesterday but afterwards I I looked at it and if I'd seen that first thing in the morning I would have been surprised at that very surprised I I understand the reaction completely. I mean it's the the mystics Tommy the game nationally on television. Ah Vision did a zero point three six rating nationally. That's barely even a number that registers. I've no idea what it did locally. I don't think they'll release that number on the nets game by the way because you know I love. This stuff did an eight point eight local rating on tbs the other night which actually okay isn't that it's it's lower than I would have thought it would have been yeah same with me now. It's TB Isis at it's TBS. It's not network work. You know there is a cable versus network. I don't know the I'm not a ratings experts so I don't know if that's a huge difference anymore. I know it some difference. Prince because there are people in homes without cable television so they couldn't see the game on TBS. They would have been able to see the game. Had it been on Fox as is an example Actually there's a lot more people now without cable television than there have been and maybe in the past ten years with some yeah the the quarterback yeah. They're they're right. They're getting it from all these other places but anyway on the nets as an exam as a comparison for game five against the Cardinals Twenty twelve did a sixteen point seven did a ten point three in game five against the dodgers in two thousand sixteen. I couldn't find the cubs number but if my memory serves me correctly directly it was like a fourteen or fifteen in game five against the cubs so I am surprised that it was an eight point eight I would have thought it would have been a little bit higher but yeah but by the way just also as another sort of as an aside. I've talked a lot about how we've done this together about how in the Redskins fan base has been roading how the television ratings are awful and you know when I did this this morning. A couple of people tweeted me and said you know oh well. You know how that the redskins ratings look. When we've ripped the REDSKINS television ratings that's in comparison to what the redskins used to do not in comparison to what other teams in town do because his bad is the redskins are as dysfunctional as they are as much as their fan base is eroded voted they are still by far and away the Kings of sports television in this market that game against the giants on Sunday which was is a super low near all time low rating for the REDSKINS for a regular season game and by the way a bad game that was over early. It still did a twelve twelve point three you know the Nats playoff game didn't eight point eight so it still you know significantly higher than anything else by the way that twelve point three. We didn't talk about this. The other day at twelve point three seven eight years ago would do for a preseason game. It's really exactly the remarkable the third preseason the fourth year in game yeah I mean it is so remarkable hell far they've fallen but for those that then and will it be by extension will say well. Why do you talk so much redskins on the podcast or why do you talk so much redskins on the radio show well because it's still by far far away the thing that appeals to the majority significant majority in this city despite of how bad they are It's not just the redskins skins. It's the NFL. It's the NFL most city. I'd be better off the way this is the way an offer we to Dan's point. We'd be you better off talking about the cowboys on a daily basis. If we were looking for the largest audience potential even in this city then talking about a couple a couple of the other teams which will lead the conversation for now. Yes we've Steinberg and I have had that discussion for years that who what what the paper would have the co pay for it would have the guts start covering the cowboys on a regular basis. Well you know I I swear to you. I have wait remember. We did a couple of times we we jokingly did like Ravens at one or cowboys at one hundred years. I do think I mean the cowboys ratings wise television ratings wise have now you know in the Ravens to have out drawn the redskins late and regular seasons a couple of times the last a few years you know people and talking head to head like one o'clock one o'clock for twenty four twenty five so I have thought about with respect to the radio station which which.

"dodgers" Discussed on The Kevin Sheehan Show

"What about this series you were there yesterday. You're out there. You're going to be here for the first two games James. You know the dodgers I just had dave shine on the radio show I like Dave a lot by the way and he he said there's just a ton of pressure on the on the dodgers that you know their lack of of getting to the you know of winning the world series with teams that were capable of doing it. They haven't won it. Since nineteen eighty eight. There's a lot of pressure in their feeling the pressure and this is the first nets team in. I don't know if there was a lot of pressure on them against the cardinals. Even though they were the number one seed in in two thousand twelve it was their first postseason visit but that they are sort of you know right now without a lot of pressure without a lot of expectation expectation. What do you think I think that's pretty accurate is it. The dodgers have won seven straight division series they they want to nationally he kinda in the past two years into the world series twice and this is a town where championships matter. I mean. La It is I mean I'm not saying it's a front running town but but it is it's a competitive crazy sports market here and the dodgers have have managed to probably closer there clawed their way back to the topic that sports market after you know ten or twelve years ago when the courts own the team team and they fell into disarray. I mean they drew almost four million fans this year at dodgers stadium but yeah I'd say I agree with Dave got. The pressure is on them not to not to go out at least in the first round division series to a team that that that literally has no bullpen again noble pen. Yep Yeah. You'll have to use it to in a series where you didn't really we have to expose it right. One Game Wild Card. Yeah I mean that's I mean you're you're. GonNa see you're gonNA see pitchers who who are GonNa make you cover your eyes for for the Washington national and you've got to hope that two things that their starters go deep enough where that's minimal and two do that the offense like they did the other night you know in a close game can still break out in a late inning and overcome any any bullpen. Thanks no words. They're going to have to bang their way. I think starting pitching and an offensive heading is the way and just yeah the bullpen so it's GonNa be real interesting. Pressure is on the dodgers would did. Did anybody talk to Davy after the game or or yesterday eh Sean little clear. It was made very clear. I think Tuesday night Daniel Hudson's Hudson is closer because you you had you had a lefty leading off the top of the ninth and you could have gone a little just against the lefty if you would want to and then brought in Hudson but he brought in Hudson no matter who who is the do up in the brewers lineup. We learn that definitively on Tuesday night that that Hudson's going to be the closer right I don't oh I don't know if that's the case. I think they brought in Hudson because Hudson was up. I mean they expect it and they knew who was gonna lead off the ninth. Why didn't he get do little up because at Hudson was up they were down three to one. Would they were saying. We're saying that he was up in the eighth. I see what you're saying before the rally that gave him the I got it but yeah he and so he would have pets you. Would you know he would pitch basically they were pitcher from behind at that point. He was the guy who was up. I see that makes you know what I that makes. Total sense. I forgot about when Hudson got up. They didn't have the lead. They weren't thinking about a closing situation in the top of the ninth at that point but that's still. Maybe you know. It's still may work out the way so you're saying because too little it is the only left-hander they've got the bullpen and they're going to need him. Maybe in situational moments late in the game so they may be locked into use him as the closer because they'll need that left handed matchup situation. Maybe some time this. This'll be so interesting. There are a lot of people first of all. I don't know if you know this. The Nets are a pretty big big underdog in this series. I just looked up the latest numbers on on the sites that I use. I got the dodgers at minus two twenty Aaron and minus two twenty five. If I mean they are there I mean Vegas is not giving the nats anywhere near the chance that a lot of the analysts and experts are you know because because I think a lot of the analysts and experts believe that that the winner of this series is going to the world series and the nats are the best opponent in the most likely opponent to beat the dodgers as of the other three nationally teams but men Vegas doesn't agree with that. What do you make of it. I agree with Vegas doctors. Dodgers are really good. They want one hundred six games. they could match up with the nats starting rotation they can match up with the nats offense throughout their lineup. and I like the nationals they do have a bullpen it hasn't been without its own problems but not to the massive extent spend that that the nationals have it's it's a lot of things have to go. Washington's way for them to beat the dodgers in a five game series and the dodgers not that it matters that much you know they have the home field advantage to so all that combines a hundred and six wins this year you know I I would have. I have to agree with the. Is that what you're going to have to have with. The nationals is what happened in that eighth inning in the wildcard game everything that it usually happens to Washington. It's going to have to happen to the opponent right which by the way yeah has happened to them at times themselves over the last you know over the last thirty one years B B B between the time that Kirk Gibson hit the game one leadoff to beat the as yeah and endgame in the game one walk off to beat the as the the last time. They won the world series. I I actually I dunno I Aaron. I don't know about you. I just play the underdogs in the postseason because you're getting great value and it's a coin flip in these baseball series more times than not you know. I looked this up yesterday. The dodgers lost in the second half of the season three out of five games three times in the second half of the season. You know some of those three out of five losses included games like against the marlins you know like it just happens like the the best teams lose three out of five. That's why in these baseball players. I don't know why you'd ever Rebecca favourite personally but I mean this is why a five game series is so much more of a crapshoot than seven game series yeah. This is why I think if the if the nationals nationals had ever gotten to a seven game series in any of these times that they might have fared much better people say to me like Tuesday night who's going to win. I said it's one game it could be the marlins tonight. We talked about that. The I mean just so you know the dodgers lost four to seven twice in the second half of the season and you know against against a stretch of not great teams like the diamondbacks and the padres so it just happens like whatever I mean I I'm interested in this series. He's because first of all it's cool that they're playing the dodgers again in the postseason. I like that but the pitching starting pitching e. You've got stars in the series. You've got what I wrote. This is this is what I wrote for for today's web calm. I mean I illustrated it by pointing out that this is as a side story. You've got this battle. MVP chance go read Donen bellinger yeah. They do the same thing at dodger stadium that they do at nationals park whenever bellinger comes up and that in a way illustrates the star power in this series I mean this is the this is the best baseball has to offer right now. This five game series the no doubt. I mean you've got. You've got a potential cy young winner unless you think it's degrom in in review. WHO's not even starting game one. They're going with Buehler who clearly what that says is that they want Bueller for game five they think he's their true shutdown guy if they because it did he's the one that would be scheduled to pitch twice. I don't know they name their game. Two starters it real or or Kershaw they have not yet. I don't think but you've got got you know the bellinger. Rendong thing as you mentioned you got all the Star pitchers yeah. It's really the this is probably the matchup in terms of the most stars in one series of the four division series absolutely absolutely it'll be good could read my column home in The Washington Times Dot Com Click on sports when I haven't seen this one that you finish. It took it just no. It got posted last night on purpose web all right. I'll hear it is I'm on your web page. I just liked it. I just gave you a big a big heart and liked it. I can't read tweet it during the day 'cause I'm required to re tweet other stuff but I can re tweet your column late at night which I've done okay many times when you asked me to which which I like doing because I love reading your comes. I'm GonNa read this one as well. I wanted to so all right. Are we done with nets dodgers. I'm by the way I'm going to pick the nats and four. I don't know why I think the dodgers are choke Franchisee. They just can't get it done. They're gonNA come up short and I think it's going to be in this for serious. I'm going to bet them at plus one eighty-five Aaron or whatever it is for the series so I'm going to pick the nats for your picking the dodgers in how many games I'm picking the dodgers and five games in five games okay a again I just I just don't see how you can get by with. I think they have a better chance than again in a five game series. I just don't see how you can can get by without that. Bullpen I mean since bullpen seems to be so important in postseason. "The clock. Dodgers podcast. I'm your host Neal with me is Adam life. Good over there, Mr. humidifier. Breathe in free in clear, free and clear. It's been cold here in Florida like allowed to say that. What do you think cold is? I don't know. Man. I mean it's been like anything below seventy is called. Anything will seventy is legitimately called at this point. Good down there. You know, he was in the fifties sixties and may have crack the forties little bit. I don't know. But yeah, man some kind of cold front or something. And man, we all had a break out, those jackets and sweaters, and sweat, pants, and all that good stuff. But I know it's kind of like disrespectful to say to people who are actually in cold places now man. It was nice here today. I think we have thirty. One of the things you hear down here, a lot is whenever you say to somebody who's like from another place, which is majority of people when you go. It's cold. I hear to the year for Florida. That's like that's the line. That's the hit him with the year for Florida. It's cold. That's a line. You get hit with. That's a cool guy status when you say that it's cold for Florida because I'm so tough guy, some really quality people there. And then you got the people who are trying to prove everybody wrong. I'm out here in shorts and sandals and flip flops. What do you guys actually co for? Yeah. Yeah. No, I can't dig that, like, no matter where you are once dress, a little, like seventy two degrees, which is like classic air conditioner inside temperature. Once he gets any lower than that. I, I don't know. I'm putting on long sleeves. I don't know if you wanna feel the need to pretend like it's not cold if it's fucking. Embrace it. What is your what do you what do you proven here? Mr. macho man, like whatever it was cold. Adam, that's all I can tell you, man. It was called down here. But I hope everything is nice and comfy in Chicago. And in your area. Whatever whatever suburb, you're in still dealing with sauna apartment still sign apartment. Yeah. Conditioner on low right now. It is twenty degrees out is like a deadline when that goes away like when you're expecting that the fall off a little bit. Yeah. Whenever they cut the heat at the end of winter. It's weird. It's so ridiculous. But I guess better this than it being gold. Depends it depends. It's tropical up. So it's a strange way to describe your apartment troppled living where you live. But anyway, autism autism to nil. Thursday night football, we're actually recording this post Thursday night football ended like five minutes ago. I think when we recording this. Too many people surprise. I would say the Cowboys actually won this game thirteen to ten user prize shocked. I mean. It's like the saints turn back into a pumpkin like they looked awful. Yeah. It's just it was rough. I mean the start of the game was rough. I think breeze started with, like, one, maybe two completions and its first seven eight. It's like it just it started really rough. And it didn't they never. They never got a rhythm go. And I don't know if it was just short week or what, but. Yeah. I mean it was it was a rough game and it's not like the Cowboys looked amazing either. It was just I don't know. It was a tough game to watch. I'll be honest. I didn't really watch all kind of was half watching it because it was just. It was it was. No. It was. No chiefs Rams. Yeah. There was particular stood. How about this one and it's weird because like you say go to this game. Somebody else. Hey, what do you think what is game? I'm like, well I expect to win they they've only lost one game. I don't think the Cowboys are going give them number two. But here this is the thing about football, man, it makes you look at jackass here and there. So, yeah, I mean, it wasn't that fun. It wasn't that great for fancy purposes breeze. Like you said it was never got on things. He only had one hundred twenty seven passing yards. One touchdown one interception. The running backs didn't really do too much. I guess Camara, gave you a little bit action if you should if your. But no touchdowns from those guys, nobody really caught the ball you care about on this, your key Keith Kirkwood fan. He got the only touchdown for the for the saints and on the cowboy side of the ball Dak Prescott did too much better than Brees Elliott Elliott came away. Good. If you're an Elliott owner, you're happy with it is game. I think that's the only guy that's like super happy Cooper little bit. But yeah, Elliot's that people really came away probably really happy with the outcome when you agree. Yeah. I would agree. I mean Cooper and PR leagues fifteen points us real solid. But ultimately, I mean this game was pretty rough in, in less your big fan, and I don't know. I just think it's just so fascinating when we have these teams like the saints that just looked so dominant we after week after week. And then they turn back into a pumpkin and it's like it just happens, so effortlessly, it's it's wild in your fantasy playoffs and you're dependent on the way your league up could be a wild can. The actual playoffs started. And this is what you're you're saints do for you. Man. They, they rolled all season long. And then just like you know what when you need as most whereas gonna fail on you. And that's what they did. So this is going to affect some teams for sure who are used again points from their saints but there's really not too much to speak about in this game. I don't wanna talk about Cooper. I don't like the guy stone allow shade at my raiders recently. So we're not gonna talk about them right now. But other than that anything else you want to talk about this game. And he had anything at a recap is not really an exciting recap for this one. No. I mean, you know, Cooper's look great ever since he got to the Cowboys. Start them. It's about him right now. I mean you weren't going. I mean those talking about that Chris, Qatar. Michael, Gallo, he's really turned the corner resents franchises. It's just there's been a lot of players rookie over the year. And you know you go. Marius thomas. No one's really made is good of a transition as a marker has served its like does that you're cutting out..

"And I think now I mean, the the problems even more Boston is become even more pronounced now because the fastball and the slider almost like the same pitch. Right. I mean, he's kinda let me ask you this. If if we didn't have it on the scoreboard where it comes up ninety eight slider on the scoreboard would could you? Tell different slider changeup. I couldn't I can't I watching box. I can I can I can tell his curve, I know is curve. I know his fastball the rest of it, and it's not crucial. I'm just saying this is general Pinon. Yeah. It's hard. It's hard to tell a lot of times like you'll. I mean to me it's always been kind of reaction of the hitter. Right to to me at all expense. You know, you go to spring training. And you see these guys throw bullpens. I can't tell the difference between I ninety eight honestly like eighty to be all it all looks ridiculous. That's actually stand there and watch it. Yeah. But you know, when when you can't tell us like say like when Strasbourg I came up remember just like the guys couldn't even get the bad. Right. So then you kind of know like, okay, this is really hard because professional hitters can react to it. If Kershaw is back with the dodgers, or whatever it is decided to do his legacy with the dodgers always going to be talking about what he didn't do in the playoff that's unfair. But you know, what I think this time goes by, you know, take a look at a guy like Harris. Now, who's kind of as time has gone by kind of become in some ways more, you know, people that like watched dodger baseball in that era have very warm feelings toward him. I think the opposite. I mean, I think Carol's is should be lot more famous than ease with dodger fans you saw when he came out to cut one of the first pitches. It was a nice cheer. But I Eric. Air was all time Homer leader in team still is maybe I think I think it's amazing. The kind of the secret it's the the secret out loud around. Here is around town is that everybody wants to say cross best pitcher implant live Kershaw, but everybody stung by the postseason. And I think that's I think you're right battle the standards in L A R differ than anywhere else. And you have to perform at the highest low. Well, yeah, I mean, I just talking about comparing Colfax. No, there's no comparison at all sandy one. And he didn't. And the weird thing. I think is that actually nationally Kershaw enjoys I think better reputation than locally. Yes. Right because nationally people look at stats, right? They look at the regular season numbers as a local fan. What you remember? You know, if you're a kid growing up you remember moments. Well, Kershaw hasn't had those moments those great you had a great column we said people remember Kershaw for either. Harms above his head or hands on his knees. Looking down when it's one of the other. But as much as we talk about as postseason failures, remember, he he mowed down the Blanda Braise this year in the I remember because when they started hundred first, and then they started him second. He was upset and he was like take that. But that was Atlanta breeze. And it was also at home. Yeah. In during the day. And you know, they talk about how the first four innings of day game at dodger state. You can't. You can't see the ball to Carol two hundred seventy homers, the A dodgers all time leader has three eighty nine. Yeah. The franchise LA dodger all time home dodger all he didn't throw out. They had a full slate. A full slate of postseason games three postseason rounds. He didn't throw a first pitch. He caught one. Didn't thought. I bitch. Dave roberts. Love him. I love him. And he didn't a tough spot. He had a bet. I'll I'll start. He had a bad. He had a bad World Series. Yeah. I think what is it? They say, you know, man, strengths and his. Weaknesses kind of spring from the same. Well, and I think that if you kind of look back to say that first postseason, right?.

"I think the front office was negligent in how they went about putting together this team that clearly had flaws, and it was just kinda like, well, we're going to count on the other teams in our division to be bad. We're going to count on the fact that the rest of the league is. Bad and we're still going to kind of back into the World Series. And hope we get lucky right because and that's kind of their general theories. Get to the playoffs in the playoffs are crapshoot you right? You talk to anybody in the front office. They will keep telling you that plow crap crapshoot. Right. So just keep getting in every year. And at some point the balls is going to kinda roll your way. And I don't think you know, when when we've seen these last two World Series kind of play out of crap shoot. Yeah. I don't think. Yeah. You see teams win because you know, what the last two years. I think the better team won last year. I think that the dodgers actually we're kind of fortunate to push it to a seventh game that Houston was clearly the best team this time. You know? Yeah. The brakes didn't go the dodgers way. But like, you know, those things come out to watch at some point the better team wand up winning, you know, and I think they're going to have a lot of questions kind of moving forward from here negligent negligent. Devastation. I just think people can sit back and some fans will say well, thank you dodgers, we got to World Series. But I think most fans are like enough's enough. This is if you're get the if you're going to get their win the damn thing if you have the most money anybody in baseball, you had the largest attendance of anybody in baseball. You have a great TV deal, which nobody can watch. But you making a lot of money eight billion dollars on TV deal that cut out most of Los Angeles. If you're making all this money have always ask. Plus, you have two of the smartest guys. And they are the smartest guys all baseball. Andrew Freeman farms eighty running your team, and you can't win a World Series. And you can get a win it once you get there. No. It's it's devastation in Dylan's. Right. It's talked for years about it's a crap shoot. Just get there. Will you see once you get there? You know, all the analytics offer thing that worked on regular season. Does it work in a short series and elite team a better it just doesn't work before the series started? Did you have? Prediction, who you thought was gonna win it. Yeah. I mean, I I think I predicted the dodgers in seven, but you said dodgers at five I said dodgers at four. Okay. Yeah. Just trolling people. Now, you're calling dodger sweep you. Here's still trolling people. Here's my here's my my that Bill. Dillon said dodgers for once game one ended we ask for new predictions. He said Red Sox in for. Not dodgers and five or six four. Why are you wanna trope you why you won't play with their emotions you got? I mean, the seriously entire city, man. Felt like this about sports when I was like eight. Remember, there's an entire city. They're generations that live in die with the dodgers. In about Bill said about the devastation like I was there. I interviewed you guys before the game. And then I was walking around the crowd in. It just fell a game five. Everybody was nervous. I'm mind euchre shot gives up the home run right away. But it just like the crowd was into it where they were really relaxed or they're enjoying themselves..

"World Series champions. The Boston Red Sox beat the dodgers in five games and celebrated at chevette ravine much to this may of many dodger fans who had a seed the visiting team celebrate on their field for the second straight year this week on a ride early leave late. We'll have a couple of podcast for you. First Dylan, Hernandez and Bill are gonna give us the dodgers perspective from a columnist view where they have outside world where they're thinking of the fans are thinking of the front office or taking what the dodgers could possibly do next season. And then later on this week partout, we're gonna go with the beat writer and McCullough who was with the team since spring training Bill. Shaken the national baseball columnist and hordic steal the new dodger beat writer who came over in the middle season, but was covering the dodgers in the World Series. Interesting to hear the perspective from those. He writers whether every single day. But right now, the state of the dodgers as you'd Dylan Hernandez and Bill Paschke. Dodger fans ain't no not again, not again, not again for the second straight year. Wait to say not again to Dylan implant, you're on the podcast. They don't wanna hear us again. They're not ready for this. For the second straight year dodger fans see the visiting team. Celebrate at SHA. Vez ravine last year Astros game seven this year. The Red Sox sT final score five the one same. Final score a Bill. Because I don't have to work. So I really don't pay like if you watch that Astros game. But all this time. I was convinced they lost seventeen nothing or something. Just because of like how Darvish got blown out of the water. It was only five one. Yeah. It was five to one. Mr darvish. No apology. That's the most. We do not oh, Mr. Darvish at apology. That is the voice of Bill plash key, legendary LA times columnists and recently new columnist Dylan Hernandez for a while that recent how long have you been years couple, quite legendary huge impact. Have you? Join their Bill. How many we'll have you covered. Oh my God up. Just the dodgers. Just general general all my gosh. I don't even think about it over twenty twenty some twenty-five maybe on Dylan to your over to. Yeah. No. You covered beat is. No, no. You never win. I went through the NFC s. Okay. A couple of times the giants clinch to go to the world's the world's. Okay. That's right. So Bill Plaski how many dodgers World Series? Have you seen victory? Oh, one eight hundred eighty eight. Than it a tire story. It's unbelie it's what it's it's unbelievable that it's been since eighty eight it's just thinkable just put it this way or Hershiser is sixty years old in he was last winning pitcher in a world city ended World Series game for the dodgers. And he's sixty now that's how long it's been when you think back at this season, and we're not going to go and just start beating down on the team. And they're like, it's an accomplishment to get to the World Series. I back to back and forty years, but it's still disappointing. Is it a failure? What's the word describe this season Dylan? Well, I think here's the thing is that the league was bad the entirely was down like they should have gotten back. You know, in the fact that they got back with that team to me honestly shows how bad the NFL was probably the best five six for coming from the the American League to me the word is actually negligent..

"Well, there's nobody downstairs to help them out except a bad boy name Mitch pool. He's a kid batboy. So we said Mitch come over here. This is during the game every game one of the World Series. Dodgers local nays dodgers really heavy her dog. So Gibson's their hero. He can't play. It's like the sixth sixth or seventh inning. So he enlists Mitch pool to help him get dressed to help pitch him balls in the cage to put balls on T formula cage finally in the ninth inning. He tells Mitch go tell Tommy I'm ready says what out until Tommy I'm ready mitch's wearing gym shorts in a t shirt. He's not allowed in the dugout. He's a backup. Batboy Mitch, you know, the way to get out there. You gotta tell him. I'm ready. So Mitch goes to the end of the dugout. What are you doing here? Mitch and he screams Tommy said at the foreign from the tunnel. So Mitch is screaming at Tommy those closer to third base. They're based on Tommy Tommy will start looks. You get the hell out of here. I'm trying to Majerus risky somebody kit till I shut up and he said, Tommy Tommy and he's scared to death. Tommy Givi complaint. Play what you play. Holy crap giving place. Tommy ROY was in their grads. Gibson history. So fast for twenty five years. They finally gifts and finally admitted allowed the dodgers to give him a bobble. They allow he didn't really want anything. He wanted nothing to do with. He just wanted to you know, you wanted to be a team victory. He's airtime bath. So he came back to town bobble head first pitch and finally agree to do it. So they announce it though, not the first pitch. Kirk Gibson standing ovation out to the mound walks. This middle aged guy in shorts and a t-shirt guess who. It was the first bridge for it gives us request Mitch pool. No way, Mitch fool. He gave he offered him because all those years later, and nobody had any idea what was going on in Mitchell through the first page for Gibson. Yeah. Man. Dodgers equipment. Mansion now he's a visiting. He's great. Wow. That's why Bill all kinds of. So that's why the dodgers to eighty eight was so special. And so unlikely in the most unlikely team maybe ever win a World Series. Honestly and fans have just been hunger for that and hungry for that. And now in recent years, you've had so much money and so much talent. And he still haven't got it done. And that's why fan just are longing for it. And ended the have a go to game seven last year was devastating it. I almost wish he hadn't even gotten to the playoffs at all losing game seven devastated. A town devastated. The team devastated in for the first couple months of this year. It's a hungry town for this thing and at eighty and then that's why 'cause eight eight lives on and the legend is Bill have a huge role on the arrive early leave late podcast. Thanks glad it's called arrive. Relieve late is a play on because dodger fan Ellie fan. Do. They're the best sports fans. Hey, they are smartest sophisticated fans in the world. And if they arrive late because traffic and early entertaining them. I have never been to a game decided in the last minute or anybody left early in his town ever ever tried to get out Dodger Stadium after ninth inning victory. You get forget it. I don't get all emotional. I know you heard that. And you're thinking man my goodness. Bentley used to deliver the LA times. And now I hired.

"Really excited for the NBA coverage that Tanya, and Dan will have a long with Brad turn of the entire LA time. Staff pumped just to hear them talking. We're gonna get them a lot during the NBA season. And of course, LeBron's making news in LA, but saw the dodgers now for me thirty years ago. Ten years old, Kirk Gibson, home run and topped out of the bed. And I hit my head on the ceiling. Bates. I'll share it with my brother and thinking, okay, the dodgers are gonna go will again last year. I saw them at the World Series. But they haven't won a World Series in a man who was there in nineteen eighty eight covering the dodgers, you know, him. You love him the one and only Bill. My favorite columnists LA times question for you bit in bid Gibson, hit the home run. It was about eight thirty at night. So you in bed at eight thirty. I was laying in a bed in bed, and they've been seven kids there's a room in the house, so those so you're watching the TV from the bed, and then I jumped up from the bunk bagels, the top bunk, and I hit my head and ceiling. Wow. 'cause I was a big dodger fan play baseball. Wow. I knew the story about Jessia Roscoe in black. I would read the LA times believe it or not Bill. My dad and mom were delivered the newspaper into the news racks. So I would help out that always read the sports page. So I knew the names of like jimmer in Alabama and malformed all the names at times head so thinking kid they're going to the World Series game. But they have it one. I had a similar incident in eighty eight. I was in my seat and auxiliary press box covering the game that was doing one of the sidebars. So it's getting toward the end of the game. It's getting the last any I gotta get downstairs. I gotta get my quotes dodgers gonna lose this game. On the mound for the as there's no way to dodgers going to win this game. So I get ready. I go to the elevator door opens. And I get on the elevator. And they get ready to close in this older woman in a Walker's coming up so elver to hold hold the elevator. Hold on. Let this nice lady on the elevator. And as nicely getting on the elevator. I hear the announcement now betting Kirk Gibson. Holy crap. I jump out of the elevator just as it closed. Ran back to my seat us all the home run. No way press box. Reserve love. So I was sitting up there. So I almost missed a home run. I saw I did a lot better than the dude who I think the most famous famous home run is. Of course, the pump. This the second most famous image is the brake lights what I'm talking about the loan brake lines. Do wanna do? Oh my God. I'm trying to leave early. And I missed the greatest moment in baseball history. Well, that guy emailed me about a year ago brake lights, and I'm like, I just don't know how to vet that. I don't know. Whether it's true or not, you know, I didn't know, you know, I was unsure about that guy. But that's so that's a ticket most iconic image. You know, what the most the biggest mystery the home run still is thirty thirty years later. Where's the ball? They never found the ball. Come on. You didn't know that? That's. You didn't know that I have written columns and calms about this trying to find the ball the ball back is back before memorabilia was a big thing. Yeah. So nobody really thought about running and getting the right away. They didn't have it right away. So if you look at the film, and I've looked at the pruder film with this thing. Broken down. It lands at the feet of some guy who picks it up. Yeah..

"You know so much you would comes down to the personality the other twenty nine teams and you know i've been doing this for a while so i have a pretty good relationship with a number of them and you know i guess it works both ways but we have a pretty good feel for each other and that dynamic and had a sense when someone to more of an aggressive motive when somebody has more the understand kicking the tires friedman the president of baseball operations who engineered the trades yesterday there were three of them but the big one bright yu darvish slim the rangers to the dodgers in his last start which was the worst start of his career give you any pause at all or did you just write that off is a bad day yeah i mean we've been following him for awhile now uh had gone to every one of his outing can we've been day he and obviously uh you know who is not a good outing um but you know this stuff the ball on a hand down the security just prey caught a little more plate than he would have liked to of um so i think he's we look forward it's more of a blow up but as you're going through it it's only human nature to sir bert to make you pas a little bit story out there that he was perhaps tipping his pitches did you did you by i mean it's a majorleague level a you guys are all trying to get an edge no matter what is it jubair that at all.
