There is about winning time of possession every game, which is not something you really hear about in baseball, But we just started thinking. We want pictures that attacked the strike zone that have quick innings. That little strikes and we don't want hitters. They're grinding out at that. I mean, I love those half innings where you get three or four shots of the opposing manager and his dugout like war. What are we gonna get out of the city? You know, even if you don't score run, just seeing the stress of the opposing managers faces like disease. Every one of these guys having a 78 pitch at that, you know, that's what we want and The pictures really? And drive that by having success. "Mark. Fine san of mlb dot com joins us. Now we are baseball loaded. If you listen to wilpon you know how much he enjoyed the san diego. La dodger series. And i will certainly talk about that. But i think above all else is the madison bumgarner circumstance. Madison bumgarner threw a seven inning. No hitter yesterday. And the reason he didn't throw a nine in no hitter is because it was a seven inning doubleheader as per the new baseball rules. My question is if baseball makes a rule that doubleheaders will be seven innings in certain circumstances. And you can't go nine. Is that a no hitter. Because that's the official game. Is that a no hitter. Well the elias. Sports bureau says no. They're the ones who make these decisions. for major league baseball you know if a guy throws a no hitter in the game gift suspended or cancelled for rain and the game is an official game at five innings That a no hitter. That's also been ruled as a no so You know. I unfortunately for baumgartner that he won't go in the history books as having a no hitter Would have been the first of his career But you know who cares right. I mean these are these are these are little things that You know madison. Bumgarner is not gonna need this no hitter to cement his reputation. I'm pretty sure what he did. In the world series is going to be what we remember him for whether he throws four no hitters from here to the end of his career.

Los Angeles Dodgers' Trevor Bauer Subject of MLB Inspection for Suspicious Baseballs

"Dodgers big. Dad's we talked about. We were talking about the dodger. We're talking about the trevor bauer situation as someone was trying to pour cold water on the dodgers situation where ken rosenthal. The athletic was reporting that multiple suspicious baseball's from the dodgers starting pitcher trevor. Bauer were sent to major league baseball for inspection to which bauer went to social media to clear that. Hey not just me because if you single one person out it makes it sound like they're guilty. That is the way most people think but it is a a wide range of pitchers whose balls have been collected to see what's on the balls to inspect the balls. And the dodgers took exception to it and i get it now. Trevor responded to that today. Here's what drivers at since. It's only illegal for pitchers to have foreign substance on their person their body whatever. It's not illegal for a catcher to have it on his shin guards or his chest protector as we've seen it's not illegal for basement having on his glove or a center fielder to have it on his gloves. So far as i am aware potentially rule change. There's some language. But as far as i know the rules baseball it is legal for those players to have stuff on their gloves. So my question is if i threw a pitch and it gets thrown out and tested and then have the foreign substance on. How do they know that. It came from me and not from the catcher's glove or from the third basements glove or nfl ball. What does that happen to hit the bat. The handle of a bet where a hitter has pine tar or whatever other substance he wants which is completely legal so long as it doesn't go too far up that how are they gonna tell that that was knee and fault me for using four in substance when that could have come from any host of other places that are legal.

"I. Look I think it's I. think it's a dumb. Move the Turner made but I, understand it entirely, and as long as everybody is going to be safe at this point, I am okay with that. I just opened the L. A. Times, sports front pay. Well, sure I mean for those people that still read the La Times. And it says Justin Turner is active selfishness leave stain dodgers championship moment that's plachy. Right? Yes. That's that's the lead story. L. A.. Times dot. com. So it, it it it. I think the dodgers need to come out and say something. And I think when they do and they respond to this and they start doing media again like we're GONNA. Talk to Passan what about both the dodgers the team the championship, and we'll eventually get to turner but right now the sharks in the water all all only wanNA cover. Turner. I just. I just think it was a big dumb moment. Dumb moment. And I don't know what they can actually say. Why think they supported? Me Want them to say I think. They stand lockstep behind him until he says something. He has to say something. Yeah. Yeah I don't know I'm not GonNa let it obscure the championship from me. We'll talk about it and all, but I'm not GonNa, let it obscure the championship for me personally and I think most dodger fans. Feel the same it is an interesting store crazy if you think most. He'll say you really think most dodger fans don't a let's go to passing. And then let's You clearly disagree on this I think with Justin Turner did was. Remember handsome right was unconscionable I. Don't think you can do you think no big deal. Let's go to the phones after we talked to. Okay passing and see if dodger fans can look the other way on this. Okay. Jeff Passan is coming up next for you Mason Ireland Seventeen Espn seven ten Espn Mason and Ireland in Los Angeles is the home of a dodgers World Series Championship and joining us right now is the great espn insider. Jeff Passan Jeff thanks a lot for coming on how are you man? Men Men congratulations, I'm doing well, how are you? We Are Great Jeff and let's start with this. Mason has said that this is the best dodger team he's seen. He's he's been living in Los Angeles for more than twenty years now I actually think he's he's right I mean if you compare this dodger team to even those teams in the eighties that were winning world series I, think they're right there. Is. It an exaggeration or is it hyperbole to say that this is the best dodgers team since the Colfax era? No I. Don't think it's exaggeration or hyperbole I think if you just look at. The amount of talent and in more than just the amount I it's it's wide and it's deep right like the the by by why'd I mean you have these individuals who have just this? Superlative amount of talent and milky vets and Walker Bueller and cory. Seager I mean those are the three who really stand out the most and I. Think you could. You could argue pretty convincingly at three best players on this team but then then you get to the depth, it's positional depth it's platoon depth. It's star depth where once you get beyond those big, you've got Clayton Kershaw and you've got Max Muncie and you've got Justin Turner and You can go on and on just about all the guys I haven't even mentioned cody bellinger for God's sake. The thing about this team this team is so good. You forget great players. So Jeff. I, notice a little wrinkle in this game that I haven't heard anybody really talk about in the sixth inning. Kevin. Cash elected. Blake Snell, out of the game before he was allowed to face Mukhi for the third time, what did you think of that move I just picked up on that white by the way on my own I. Mean. It's amazing how a student your observations really are very impressed. I you know. at the at the risk of I it's not even going to be sounding like an apologist but but I wanna I wanNA point this out and this may have been pointed out by by another guests who saw about this you guys The dodgers did the same thing the night before. Right hid literally the same thing the night before wait now admittedly. Blake snow was pitching than Clayton Kershaw up Clayton. Kershaw was seventy eight pitches in five and two thirds innings. He had gotten his last two outs on two pitches. Aside from the third thing when gave up a couple of runs in the fourth when he escaped, he seemed to be quote unquote cruising. and out came Dave Roberts and he got booed and Dustin may came in and did his job and they've Robert SORTA. skated by when he got out platoon later on and I guess my point is this. The dodgers and the rays are not all that dissimilar in their process in their decision making in a whole lot that they do. So it kills me that the rays are being called these computer based analytic monsters when the dodgers are run almost the exact same way and put together the same guy. Yeah you're right one, hundred percent. Exactly and and so I think my issue I had I, had two issues number one I don't think blake sound should have been taken out of that game and not because I'm a hundred percent convinced that he was going to go through the rest of the sixth-inning and into the seventh and eighth and continued doing what he had because that that's a that's an unknowable thing I just think that the decision that was made to bring Nick Anderson and was where the flaw was I thought they were better matchups that that the raise could have put in position and and yet at the same time..

"So Ford missed a lot of opportunity to amass not only counting stats, but to improve his rate stats against the dregs of the American league. And I think after stingl left he began pitching. We're often he won a CY young in nineteen, sixty one and his numbers are still incredible throughout his career two point seven, five year a he has the best winning percentage of all time among pitchers with a certain number of decisions. So a no doubt holiday no matter what. But it's kind of amazing to me to look at these numbers which are phenomenal in and of themselves and think while they could have been so much better if not for these contextual circumstances. That's an incredibly small number for a hall of Famer Steven Goldman wrote an interesting eventually I think that's worth reading it at BP a where he says it is tangles you essentially very modern usage pattern for what you Ford may have preserved his career that maybe he might have gotten hurt. You know we saw him put up big and this is why it Stephen Road that like he put a innings totals under Ralph how in the early sixties in his arm gave out and so it. It's. It's you know I think Stengel is as much as he is like a a legendary. Manager. He sort of gets underrated as a as a tactical innovator I think maybe sometimes we think of him is just the guy who did Joe Torry for for Whitey Ford Mickey Mantle. But doing stuff like this he had a huge impact on certainly fords and I think the Yankees were better off for it. And Morgan I think has about twice the career war of weighty Ford, which just goes to show you how great he was because we've been singing Ford's praises and Morgan is just you know kind of in a an even higher, even more exclusive tear as a player and his career I mean he is probably the best second baseman of all time. He played for twenty two years in the majors came up as a teen played into his forties and was still productive. Then was a great player with the Astros as a youth and then really leveled up in. His late Twenties and thirties with reds and the big red machine and won back to back MVP awards in his thirty s and you know the the two world series wins and all the gold gloves and the other accolades just a an incredible. All round player as a a small guy. You know not quite out to vase is but someone who is definitely discounted because of his build and proved everyone wrong and is one of the the great on base guys in baseball history, and of course, that is somewhat ironic given what we know him for after his career and. I made this point. I think when we were talking about Bob Gibson and boy boy sure have been doing these little remembrances much too often at the end of these episode, slightly between alkaline and Bracken seaver and Gibson, and now Morgan and Ford. I think I saw somewhere that this is the most hall of Famers who have died in one year since the early seventies and these aren't you know. Borderline guys either these are like no doubt first ballot players that we're talking about. But I I mentioned when were talking about Gibson that all of these players have been so visible and have hung around the game for decades after they played and Ford was a coach for the Yankees and broadcaster and he would show up at every oldtimers gave an all star games and Morgan I mean, no one was. Really. More visible in retirement than Morgan as someone who is on the board at the hall of fame and would be you outspoken about issues in the game. But of course, as broadcaster both as a local broadcaster and as part of the iconic pairing of Morgan and John Miller on Sunday night baseball for decades and I think we all grew up watching that and listening to those guys and I. Have a lot of nostalgia and fondness for that. You know I think I enjoyed Morgan as a broadcaster nut everything he said clearly and I think he was inadvertently influential in a way. You know almost in the way that billy bean was in getting a generation of people to embrace sabermetrics if not for Fire Joe, Morgan I don't know that I would be doing what I do now and make sure. Who co-authored that blog has said that he regrets calling it fire Joe, Morgan, and singling out one particular person and we all remember the Joe Chats at Espn and the things he said about money ball and being an about on base percentage. But I found him to be a pretty entertaining broadcaster. A lot of ways you know sort of like Harold Reynolds I think who I enjoy his work like. I, he's just a good TV personality and yeah. If you parse some of the statements that he makes, you know listen to them or or read them in print you relief scratch your head and wonder what he's thinking. But I kind of enjoyed just the the presence in the broadcast booth and Morgan was really good at at think talking about the finer points of the game and breaking down mechanics and That sort of thing, and you know he's not alone in being a former player who did not excel necessarily at player evaluation or maybe didn't even recognize what made him so great when he saw it in other players to bad mouth Oh bp when you have a near four, hundred career BP yourself was always pretty perplexing but you know that's ultimately I, think a pretty small part of his legacy which. Is just an all time great player and teammate on some of the best baseball teams of all time yet, Joe Morgan's one of the the all time he players who I've always felt really attached to. I. Remember when I was first getting into baseball like has a six or seven year old like you know watching the Ken Burns documentary and and starting to read books and so you know I.

"Do you do with that position because if the dodgers do get back in this series, they're going to be in that spot where they're going to need to protect lead late and at this point it's it's not really clear what they should. Do you know do they put the twenty four year old left-handed rookie Victor Gonzales out there because he is pitched so well, do they try to stretch some of their swingman types and have them pitch multiple innings and pitch late in games? So that's one of the things that you look at the dodgers and you think, oh, well, they're the impregnable dodgers they're down to. Oh but the way they're constructed gives you some confidence that they can get back in that series I think between Kershaw's back issue and between the late inning bullpen conundrum, there are some causes for concern. Yeah, I, found that the. Of the eight lowest philosophy games of Kenley Johnson's career seven have come since the start of September, which is not the direction you want to be going when your season is going to be on the line game. One Roberts. Turned to try to China in the ninth inning of Tie game that obviously didn't work I. Victor Gonzales has probably been the dodgers best reliever, this year Ben, but he's also. A rookie without much experience and he's also a left handed pitcher and this might be transitioning topics Abed and I want to get back to the dodgers bullpen but I just want to talk about Dave Roberts Pitcher left-handers in this series against particularly ozzy. Albee's. So he has used a left handed reliever against Albee's in the ninth inning and consecutive games and in both games Albee's hit a home run. Ozzy Albee's is a switch hitter, but you cannot throw left handed pitchers against him, and I don't understand what Roberts is doing an obese career. He has a seven fifty three O ps against right handed pitchers right handed pitchers. So an Albee's is batting lefty. He has a seven, fifty, three opium, which is good but nothing spectacular. Against left handed pitchers so Albee's is sitting right handed. He has a nine fifty, two P S, which is basically Aaron. Judge's career mark if Albee's were A. Batting right handed. So against lefties where a player all by himself, he would have the twelfth highest slugging percentage in MLB history twelve highest and we'll be history. He slugs five seventy five in the regular season against lefties and I don't understand why you would ever throw a left-handed pitcher against him in an important moment last night Dave Roberts sure. He's down by four runs in the ninth inning, but the dodgers ended up scoring for. So this run mattered he put an atom cleric who is basically a lefty specialist against a lineup that had a righty. And then Albee's switch hitter and then two more righties. So I'm not even sure what cleric is doing on the mound in that situation with no left coming up and particularly Albee's who crushes lefties up second in the inning you same to yeah. I think Dave Roberts is a good manager I think in general criticism of managerial strategy in the playoffs is really difficult as ben you've written about both this postseason and in the past when like Aaron Boone was criticized for some of his pitching strategies in the LDS I, understood them. But this Dave Roberts. Decision to keep using lefties against Albion against the braves right handed sluggers doesn't make sense to me when you have a bullpen that goes like ten deep and you have so many other options. Yeah, I can't really explain this one either I i. assume that there is some methods to what appears to be madness here and that it's not the Dave. Roberts. Just the rung row on the Baseball Reference Splits pitcher something I've done that before it's. Too I've thought it too but I would hope that he has done it multiple times at least that someone might a pointed that out yeah I mean usually I think okay. There's some sort of sophisticated proprietary matchup data here that they're not just looking at versus lefty righty splits, which is basically what we're limited to or head to head tiny sample stats against a particular player. But they're looking at how this hitter matches up against pitchers who have this sort of stuff or that sort of. Release Point using comparable pitchers to come up with some sort of projection. But in this case, the difference is so stark that I don't know how you could actually come up with a a reasonable projection that would tell Dave Roberts to do what he did. So get a given the benefit of the doubt and say that it's not solely his decision and there is some sort of backing for this. But at least out here in the public with our rudimentary stats, I can tell you this. Yeah I. I'll say this too and I liked Dave Roberts is a manager I think that he's a huge part of why the dodgers are in a position to embarrass themselves in the NFL every single your but I really think he's he's gotten circles managed around by Bryant's Necker I've been really impressed by how snicker his Has Managed his pitching staff so far this postseason like even. Decisions that. That don't look consequential at the time like taking Ian Anderson out after after four innings. He said this on the broadcast last night. Those were four tough innings and they're just and he expanded a lot of energy and so rather than risk going too long he's just going to quit while he's ahead or even. Pitching Josh Tomlin in the ninth inning last night even though he gave up three runs is a good decision because you're going to need every bit of your bullpen and end. Up by five runs. In the ninth inning, you ought to be able put in a position player enclosed that out and so even though it didn't really work the process behind that was was one hundred percent sound and I liked it. It's almost an aggressive move to bring in the last guy in your bullpen. In that situation I think that's really paying off her for a team that.

"Where'd you way out on a limb though with some ridiculous blazers. Prediction beforehand that there was no chance they were going to win I. Believe I was listening to that prediction at a different time slot when this show is on so I just want to keep you I don't know I don't think that well I don't. Know. My thing was I. picked the Blazers to win the eight seed which I got right but I said there's no chance beating the Lakers. Got It. Okay. Just just making sure that I had that you know stacked up straight Laura I guess I had. Listen I got made fun of on the jump when I said that they would make up all that stretch and take over the eight seed and then. I got clowned by liver was on set with me that day or not onset on zoom maybe it was Paul Pierce I don't know I don't WanNA slander anyways I don't remember but I remember looking at me like I was crazy. It might have been windy might have been windy might have been, but either way. Slandering anybody so I got three days. Anybody come over. Joan. Arkins. So anyway. But Yeah I don't I don't see their look. Japan. Gundy is even stronger than me. He says there's a better chance the players get swept and actually winning this series. Wow I mean. That analysis I. Agree with that. You can have four very close games even have one or two going overtime and still get swept. I see. Okay that's fair. Actually makes a lot of sense and that's what I was back to my earlier L Z, which is, is that going to be a sweep that a satisfactory Lakers fans you know we have doom and gloom every time. There are three stars that have double digits in the first half. It seems like we're taking calls with sleep all night long about why nobody could fill it up if they squeak by in a lot of people's minds, the blazers is that GonNa all of a sudden turn the panic button on it I don't think it should, and that's kind of what my Lord agree here is. The situation where however you get by the Blazers is a good thing ultimately for the team in terms of cohesion and into obviously advancing. So yeah, I mean. Are Worthy opponent for sure worthy opponent. Lebron James has never lost in the first round of the playoffs right and there's a reason for it. He's really really good. He's really really good and he's not just really really good just in up in. So he makes those around him better than what they are. Imagine, taking a top five player and make him better than what he already is. That's what we're about to see. WE'RE GOING TO SEE PLAYOFF AD. WE'RE GONNA see playoff coups. We're going to see a playoff squad do things that he did do the regular season but that still doesn't mean that the blazers aren't going to be tough. That's not fair. That's not trying to have it both ways that's respecting a t that it's only really loss to the Golden State Warriors in the last four or five postseasons and was just in the western conference final a year ago its respect. Clinton was remiss if we didn't ask you here before we let you go around the Washington football teams, Higher Jason, right, there I the first black president in the NFL. Let alone the team and that particular franchise what do you make of that particular higher? There's a face I'm making that black folks make when people do things that they think that they should be impressed with. Anything that L Z, knows that. GonNa Right now last. Last team in the NFL to integrate on the field team requires a complete bombshell of a situation story. In order to simply get the name change, you hire brother who happens to be a lawyer who works in this kind of world I. Don't know if you guys know what people who work in those jobs are like in DC, and this no knock on right because. He is a sublime individual from a football standpoint and otherwise as far as the business acumen is and all that a lot of those people are the same black or not. You know what I mean when you're working in that type of field. So I am of the opinion frankly that anybody that Dan Snyder trusts is probably not somebody who I'm going to trust and how. I'm going to extrapolate that is to say that this was the NFL's doing as much as anything and don't be surprised if there's some extra steps to go along with that in terms of WHO's running the show there I mean, this is not the kind of person damned. If ever hired on his own, flatly in period and just because it happened, it doesn't mean that. I believe in him anymore certainly doesn't mean that I think that anything's GonNa go right reminder he just sued somebody that would be Daniel Snyder last week. Okay. So you know it's peak Bernstein per usual and they can't even figure out what's going on with their starting quarterback situation because the owner was playing favorite. So you know, yeah, I'm sitting on my porch, my door's open. My pores my screen door however is closed. There is quickly of the undefeated follow us on twitter at Clinton Yates you're the best. "Do you think about the dodgers roster? They already have the reigning Mvp with cody. Bellinger they also have the former. Mvp AND CY young winner with Clayton Kershaw. So how all of these. Big noted players sort of fit together on one roster. They fit together like a lovely twenty six piece puzzle. And and that's the beauty of what the dodgers have done. They have constructed a roster. That really doesn't have. I'm not gonNA say any but doesn't have clearly visible flaws in that particularly goes for the everyday lineup. I mean you can put any number of players that any number of positions you can cody bellinger and Centerfield. One day playing first base. The next day. Compla- Max Muncie at first base and we can shift them over to second where. Oh by the way Gavin Lux whose top-five prospect and all baseball is GONNA play as well but if he's not there and if there's a left on the mound you can put key Gate Hernandez in their second base and he absolutely destroys lefthanded pitching. He also can play left field. Maybe a little bit of Centerfield but you've got AJ pollock and left field to you. Know if there's a right hander. Anyone Output Jack Petersen in there he crushes right handed pitching in. You've got cory seager. Shortstop Justin Turner Third. Will Smith is going to be a star behind the plate in bets guy in right field. You're talking about an incredible group of talent. But you're also talking about an incredible payroll that just was able to recklessly go. Add mookie betts because they wanted to when you look at a team like the orioles this year spending what forty five million dollars on their entire payroll and the dodgers are spending close to two hundred twenty. I mean it's just that level of imbalance as the rich seemingly get richer. Is that good for baseball. Yeah it's not great. It's not great but that's what happens when you have an UNCAPPED SYSTEM. That's also what happens when you're in a sport where money doesn't necessarily equal success if the dodgers just went out spending money like literally that's all they did. We've seen that before. We saw that with the New York Yankees throughout the two thousand. Ten's didn't work and and I think the Yankees really change their mindset and started understand what the dodgers have long understood. Which is you cannot be successful doing what you do. If you're not developing players from within if you're not counter-balancing those larger salaries with minimum salaries from players that you have developed whether it's via the draft or international free agency. You have to have a balance of those two and when you see the number of players that the dodgers have developed it shows just how great their farm system really has been for everything that we've talked about the greatness of the when you look at the National League across the board when teams should the dodgers the most worried about no one. I mean. Look when you have a system in which there is a five game series. You should be afraid of everyone but over the course of one hundred sixty two game season. There's nobody who's going to challenge the dodgers. There's just not I mean the Arizona diamondbacks Jason a really good team. They're probably going to be double digits behind the dodgers in the National League West. Even if you go out east let's look at the defending world series champions The Washington nationals. Good the really. Good the got Max Shurer. They've got Stephen Strasburg. And Patrick Corbin Audible Sanchez in the rotation. They beat the dodgers last year. Even though they didn't have as much talent. That's the trouble with going as far in on. Mookie Betts as the dodgers. Did I absolutely think it was the right move? I absolutely think that it was at the right time but in the end when we look back on the two thousand twenty season there is a possibility and not an insignificant possibility either that the dodgers lose in the division series like they did last year and at that point with bet steel. Be Worth it. I mean the answers gotta be no right. Well let me counter that though I mean the answer is no anytime you acquire player. Sure I understand world series or bust but the dodgers are making money. Anyway they WANNA look at it so they're putting themselves in the best chance to try and win a World Series Championship. Is it as simple for the organization as World Series or bust? Yes I think it is at this point I think. The dodgers judge their seasons where they are right now with the talent. They have based on whether they have a gold ring encrusted with diamonds. That they're giving out on opening day the next year or whether they don't I think it is that binary and certainly you can take positives out of a season which you don't win a world series and have good feelings about the things that you achieve that accomplished but if you were to give truth serum to everybody in that organization. I think everyone would say we. WanNa win and we want to win. Now if you had to decide to to come in with an educated opinion and you're risking my house on it not yours my house on our friendship and it's dodgers of the field to win it all this year. Who who you take it. I'm GonNa take your question and twisted a little. If you had one team to choose to win the world series this year. Who WOULD IT BE? My answer would be the Los Angeles dodgers..

"Jeff Passan how are you doing on this fine wonderful day? I am both fine and wonderful Jason. Thank you Jeff. Passan covers major league baseball for ESPN. He's been in Florida and Arizona reporting on Spring Training. So we're GONNA talk dodgers today and they might be the biggest story because of what they did this off season that starts with the massive trade with the Red Sox if you had to give the mookie Betts trade story a tagline mookie betts the dodgers blank. It happened then. It didn't happen and then it happened again and the fact that it happened. I think really salvaged in offseason for the dodgers where their fans felt like they were. Fiddling is Rome Burns and it was interesting because if the dodgers had not gone out and traded for mookie Betts this winter or the spring as it were they still would have been the best team in the National League and they would have been the best team in the National League probably by a pretty healthy margin but to go out and get a guy who is arguably the second best player in baseball really speaks to just how important winning now is for this organization. I wanted to give everybody a peek behind the curtain of Jeff Passan. So walk me through those sort of the moment. You've I started hearing that this could be on the horizon. Well off season. There was a feeling that somebody big was going to get moved and you know as as time ticked away going towards spring training. The sentiment was that that was less and less likely. I remember getting a text and it was very simple. It said mookie dodgers traction and when you get something like that you know the alarm bells. Go off a little bit. I started poking around hearing. Yeah there may actually be some legs this deal but there were so many different iterations of it in terms of water the dodgers gonNA TAKE BACK IS PRICE. GonNa go with him. What sorts of prospects would they give up? We're following a developing story. That could be a blockbuster in baseball. The dodgers are in deep discussions to acquire star right fielder. Mookie betts from the Red Sox and bit of a snag in the mookie. Betts deal to the dodgers. The blockbuster three-way trade has been held up because of questions surrounding me health of at least one player. Pitching Prospect Bruce. Dr Red Sox didn't like the medical congressional who had Tommy John Surgery in the past. It started to come together and then obviously it looked like it might fall apart for a moment. What your thoughts. When it looked like the deal was sort of breaking up. The dodgers were not going to let mookie. Betts play for another team this year. Even as Boston and Minnesota we're negotiating and trying to figure out their end of what was supposed to have been a three way trade and when that did not happen. The dodgers stepped in and said you know what we are going to make this deal happen and it's exactly what they did and that bets blockbuster. It's reworked but done Boston agreeing to send two thousand eighteen. Al Mvp Mookie. Betts pitcher David price to the dodgers for outfielder. Alex do go. And prospects jeeter downs encounter Wong. Boston also said we've talked a little bit about the deal but I wanNA talk about Mukhi specifically what makes him so. Unique is player issues graded everything he hits. For average he hits for power. He's an excellent base runner. He's arguably the best right fielder defensively in the game. He's a good clubhouse presence. Nice guy what can you bring to this team this franchise the help and finally bring a championship to La? I'm GonNa do everything I can bring. My energy reminds Simon Work. Work hard Trying to rub off that way. I know there's a lot of guys that work hard and do everything they can't hear and so I'm just GonNa be here at onto that. Should make our case for twenty twenty world series for sure. You look at Mookie Betts and you try to find fault with him and you just can't I mean the worst thing you can say about. Mookie Betts is. He hasn't been a superstar in the postseason. He's going to get a chance to play in the postseason again this year health permitting. And if he's out there in October on the biggest stage with free agency about to hit I feel like that is his time to absolutely shine and show everybody why he believes that he's going to be baseball second. Four hundred million dollar player next to my trap. And what's interesting is that you said earlier. The dodgers fans were restless even though they would have gone into the season likely as the best team without Mookie Betts. So why was it actually necessary to acquire mookie? It wasn't necessary optimal. Sometimes when you understand just how good your talent is and what the landscape is across the rest of baseball. You realize that it's worth going for it that sitting around and trying to get as much surplus value as you can might not win you a championship now. Trading for Mookie. Betts might not win you championship either but you certainly have a better chance at doing so when you have him in the middle of a lineup. That already is pretty devastating. I promised we wouldn't talk entirely about the Astros but there is an element of this conversation. That is Astros based or at least saw signs dealing based when you look at the way the seventeen and eighteen world series went down. How much does that play into the way that they approached the off season this year? Yeah I don't think it's an element I think it's a large part of it. Honestly I mean let. Let's look at what the dodgers have done. They've won seven straight National League West Championships and they bowed out in the S. The first time around in two thousand thirteen and they did it in the lcs again in two thousand sixteen when you get to two thousand seventeen and you're playing in the world series and you have a team that's one hundred four games and you feel like they are every bit as good as the Astros and then they go and lose in game seven at the Houston. Astros have claimed that city's first ever World Series Championship. That is a gut punch. And when you come back the next year and you run into a team in the Boston Red Sox that has just buzzsaw through the playoffs. You know that hurts to the Boston. Red Sox baseball all season. They have water at a celebration begins and now to look back and know that the two thousand seventeen astros had spent the season and according to Rob. Manfred the playoffs as well cheating. We have a developing story in major league. Baseball has launched an investigation into allegations. That the Astros Centerfield camera to help steal signs during their two thousand seventeen championship brunt and to look at the accusations and allegations against the two thousand. Eighteen Boston Red Sox and to believe that at some point in the near future maybe at the end of this week we're going to have a better accounting of what they potentially did. Mlb says it will investigate allegations that the red sox used their video replay system to steal sides during the world series winning season in two thousand eighteen. That hurts and that sort of thing that sticks in your psyche as much as you want to wipe it out of your mind and say there's nothing we can do. There's no sense in looking back. How can you not you just said it? Sometimes it's best to move forward. Is there still value for the dodgers continuing to air their grievances continuing to shed with it? I mean as a reporter who loves players speaking their minds. Of course there's a wonderful intentive cody bellinger and Justin Turner in particular or quite outspoken. On the topic. I mean these guys are cheating for three years altuve as stolen. Mvp from judge in seventeen. Everyone knows they stole the ring from us. It's hard to feel like they earned it and they earned the right to be called champions. I I know personally. I lost respect for those guys. Everyone in the show in the big leagues lost respect for those guys. I think it's pretty obvious. That whatever the commissioner thought he did he didn't do it very well. They said all of the things that so many players around baseball felt but they said them from the perspective of someone who is actually deeply harmed by this to have the ability to win that championship. For what would have been the first time in almost three decades at that point taken away from you really still angers the dodgers and brought them out. Maybe a strong anyone around the game. I think they've said their piece at this point and I think they need to lead their game. Speak the rest.

There's no Washington redskins without Sammy Baugh he wants to NFL Championships in every list of great great nfl players he's in the top ten every list and Walter Johnson only the greatest right hander and the history of Major League Baseball pitchers. I know you gotta leave them off because they didn't happen. You were born you know since you were born before seeing they don't count well. That's your thing before. She doesn't in count okay fine then. Let's so if it's if it's Sammy Ball Walter Johnson Alex veteran then we can just right now. It's a very quick debate who would be the fourth and final one on that Mountain Mount Rushmore. That's that's a tough one at a time gotta be. It's it's got to be a player from one of the pro teams. Yeah I get that. I understand that it's got to be one of the major teams. Take Gimme Johan. Oh Hand Kroth now. I mean look people would say Rigaud. I think I think people might say Rigaud. The people might say Darryl Green. I think people might say Darryl Green there. There's another one that I immediately popped into my head and that is Elvin Hayes I. I don't think anyone's going to buy any. I don't care whether anybody else buys into it. I'm telling you what I think. Elvin Hayes your. NBA He's the greatest NBA player in the history of the city Eddie. I get that but you're mount. Rushmore is a pebble. If you put Elvin Hayes Oh okay so but the just you would put him ahead of John. Wall Gilbert arenas and WES unseld. Wouldn't you know I wouldn't put my son upsell. MVP and rookie involved here in Baltimore. Okay Okay in Baltimore. Yeah I. I wouldn't put him ahead of West. Okay so and when you do your Baltimore Mount Rushmore you can put wes unseld on there with cal ripken in Johnny United States and I'm sure I can come up with the fourth year if you give me some time. Eddie emerged but I yeah Rigaud and probably Darryl Green because Darryl Green was probably a better all-time great at his position now they're both they're both equal green and rigour probably equal and I mentioned this you previously I'm always fascinated. Why can Houston doesn't get he's do as one of the all-time great redskins he is consistently. Lee when you see the list of the greatest safeties the NFL his he's in the top five an and there's no other player in Redskins history other than Sammy Baugh that that you can say that about no you're right absolutely and I think he played twelve years in the NFL seven of which were the redskins his yeah yeah he doesn't he hasn't got his do absolutely yeah but not on Mount Rushmore right here on my route Mount Rushmore radio for no not no not on my Mount Rushmore of Communist. You are and sports talk hosts yes. You are all right real quickly before we run today. I do have a smell test. Pick a Tommy. I think I've told you this. Maybe it didn't the other day. The smell test is on a bit of a a bit of a heater thirty a and one over the last three weeks. It's all time I was twelve and three last week nine yeah no two weeks ago nine five and one in between so that's thirty eight and one over the last thirty six fifteen in one for the season season so I am. I'm helping people pay some bills in a lot more I like Seattle tonight laying the point and a half at home against the rams. I I don't like an errand. I don't know if you feel the same way. I don't like these Thursday night games. I think they're very unpredictable. When it comes to betting them but there's a lot of public action on the rams and and they're super sharp action from what I was told late last night on the seahawks and SORTA goes hand in hand with what I've been thinking I pick Seattle to win the division and I thought the rams might have a step back year. maybe a playoff year but not as good as last year and I think we've seen some chinks the rams armor you know last week definitely. Tampa Bay by the way Tommy just as quickest. Oh my God we didn't do the NFL power rankings today we haven't done. NFL power rankings cue up the outgoing. Yes we are going to know. I'm not doing it why I'm not doing it because I don't feel like doing it they. Do you know how hard it is to do this week. I'm not doing it. Get prepared right now. You're going to do IT I. I'm not doing it. You're doing it. I'm making you do it. I'm not I'm not doing yes you are. You're going to do it all right fine. You don't have to do it. I I was just going to tell you that I think after new England Kansas City. It actually gets very hard this week. It's not as obvious it's as it's been because the rams got beat fifty five to forty last week by Tampa Bay and what I was going to say before. We basically excused ourselves from doing. NFL power rankings today is that the buccaneers right now or a vegas favorite. I mean the the Vegas oddsmakers loved themselves. Some Tampa Bay buccaneers they they're they're. They're the numbers on futures their line this week. At New Orleans is three. It's super short. You saw it open at five and a half six and it's down to three and a half three yeah. I think that's a couple of weeks ago number. No I'm pretty sure that was Sunday's. There's no way we had a nine point move from Sunday not nine three point move. I five and a half say oh that's right you. Orleans for six hundred three okay mic my fault. Yes so yeah. That's very possible. I've seen Erin on some of these sites. They've had some lines from a couple of weeks ago that they've indicated was the opening line. I only WanNa look at the Sunday. You know the the late late Sunday night opening line to see the movement is not from a few weeks ago but anyway vegas loves Tampa they in the buccaneers they they got some talent. They've got a coach offensively. They've got a defensive coach in bowls. they go to New Orleans. You're you're next Washington redskins head coach. I predict predicted that to Thanks for listening to the show. Did you see I. I think I had that before you. I don't think he did this. This is your got it for me but that's okay. You can't remember anything. You've got to write your off my Mount Rushmore. I'm good. I don't WanNa be on yours figured out. An offer book. Put up a list for redskins coach week one of next year. The favourite isn't debate coach but it's not Todd Bowles. I know I know it's Byron left-wing. Oh well interesting yeah yeah like we're not a lot of less out there that have falls on it. Yeah I well the reason I said it and you grabbed onto it and ran with it is because Joe because Joe Gibbs likes todd odd bowls a lot and I think we both believe the Dan's got one place to turn when he gets rid of everybody hopefully in that's coach. Joey just doesn't have many people people that he can rely on or go to do realize this is not. This is not true. I do realize what I didn't talking about. Todd Bowles Goals as the next head coach for a while now. I've been talking about Todd Bowles as the next head coach when he was coaching the jets I was talking about todd bowls as the defensive coordinator a great defensive coordinator and a guy of loved for I don't know four years now and you definitely you grabbed onto that that trend which is fine. You do a lot of times. It's Okay Todd Bowles at the next head coach when he was still playing for the redskins. I was talking about todd. Bowles is the next redskins head coach when they drafted Todd Bowles back in one thousand nine hundred eighty six or whatever your was all right. I'm done with you. anyway. Seattle is a smell test minus one and a half tonight I'm pretty sure the smell test is gonNA crash and burn this week Aaron. You know why I 'cause I love the board and that is probably a kiss of death the kiss of death for the weekend but stay tuned tomorrow tune in tomorrow because I'll have my complete smell test for the weekend. Seattle tonight minus one and a half by the way I'd lean South Alabama as well against Georgia Georgia southern but that's not an official smell smell test. Pick Tommy. Thank you appreciate it enjoy tonight. Enjoy tomorrow night. and I will talk. Maybe I'll I'll read your column that you just wrote and everybody re Tommy's columns. Follow me on twitter and you can link right to the columns from there but we'll talk together on the show on Tuesday but I'm sure we'll talk to you before then all right boss take care if if you're listening to us on Itunes or apple podcasts race review a salsa subscribed that helps it doesn't cost you thing and remind people that would like to listen to the podcast asked that they can listen to it on the Kevin Sheehan show dot com also just a reminder. I'm back on radio on. ESPN NOT ESPN nine eighty the team nine eighty right which by the way we're also F._M. Right now ninety nine point five which is F._M. Signal that some of you will get perfectly in some of you won't but Amman seven to ten A._M. In the morning have a great day. Enjoy the nets game tonight..

"dodgers" Discussed on The Kevin Sheehan Show

"The guy's is not putting in the work. The guy's not getting any better the guy's a major long term project if we put him on the field. We can't operate a professional national offense. We can't evaluate other people offensively not to mention the fact. He's GonNa get himself. Hurt you know and I don't think that they would tell me that I I haven't heard that. I don't think they would say it to you. I don't think they would say to us now. It doesn't mean that they don't think he's a project but but there's gotta be something that Jay Gruden can put out there Ford Twain Haskins to get him live bullet real game experience over these last three quarter last three quarters of the season there so many things that can be done with these young quarterbacks you cut the playbook in half ghetto if reading reading defenses and getting them in the right protection schemes are so important they can go with nothing but hot routes you know they can they can they move away from max-protect and having throw hot on every throw so he's not literally reading out. Is it cover one. Is it cover to cover three there lots of things is that Jay gruden could do you know to make him more comfortable and to get him playing time the rest of the way. That's my big problem with this again again. If somebody called me up after hearing me say this on radio at your hearing me say this on the podcast from the organization and say CAF off the record look he he he can't he can't do it. I mean plus. He's not putting in the work. He's not he's not. He's not here early leaving late. He's he's not putting in all the work. He's not getting it. He can't function you know. He's a great kid but he can't function right now. He's he's. He's a year overweigh minimum unless I heard that I want him to play okay. I'll try to look. Here's here's here's here's the problem that that that that on countering you know. I get my thoughts in between the time you start talking and the time that you're dod so you better start writing them down. That's what I do when you're talking. I'm I'M GONNA have to start writing them. That's what I do when you're talking. I write them down. Look Erin. Look at all my notes notes as I'm writing down when Tom he's talking 'cause. I don't forget you. GotTa have a pattern paper a pen and paper in front of you. Trust me drone on and onto who occasionally yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah okay here. Elba quarterbacks that you brought up before I think this is a difference. There weren't three choices. Is there to be made. There's three choices for Jay. Gruden with the Redskins know if there was no case keenum or if there was no Cole McCoy this this would be a lot easier but but any most of the quarterbacks that you brought up like the quarterbacks are usually thrown into play. The coaches don't don't usually have three choices. There's two choices so I think that complicates everything now. The other thing is if Jay Gruden Star Art Him against the Patriots is his agenda to damage the kid or if say Gruden doesn't start him against Haskins askins against the Patriots is his agenda to hold him back. You'll hear people make both cases. You'll hear people say well if he starts them against the Patriots. He's putting them out there to get killed. He's put like like Louis. Riddick said he's putting them out there to fail. You know so I mean the thing I I don't know. I'm Jay can't win if he starts them. He's got an agenda if he doesn't start 'em he has an agenda and this is. Dr And that's and that act nothing the older kid may have nothing to do but driving that narrative but people around him do and that's what's pissing. Jay grew off aw that makes a lot of sense to me the whole you know. He's he's pissed off because you know that in that last comment you know aw there. He's going to be wrong either. Way Is is sensitive to the criticism which by the way what you're saying he probably thinks are coming from people people that are close to the kid and and probably people in in its own building yeah and maybe even people in his own building and for him. He's like look doc. I've I've been a coach forever. I've coached quarterbacks forever. I know what I'm doing. I know how to handle these situations and he's probably very frustrated and by the the way I think your point and I wrote this went down as you were going on and on I wrote down the three choices thing is. I actually think that's a really good good point. I would just say to you what I said to you. In the summer. I get rid of the third choice so it's not a temptation like this. I this was a mistake to have a third choice. Yes I mean. There's no debate. There's no argument you know. It's either one guy or the other and I mean the three. Troy is particularly one of those choices Cole McCoy. You know that piece of candy and I'd say Gouden can ignore complicates everything all right well. You're not going to be here or be back on the show until Tuesday the answer this question. Do you think Colt McCoy will be the starter Sunday. Oh yes absolutely I absolutely do and and I can't believe I'm not going to be there for it. I I've been there for it. It'll be funny because if he survives the game which by the way we'll get odds on tomorrow as to whether or not he'll actually take every snap and the game. He'll be looking for you in the press conference afterwards. Where's My dad. Where's the Tommy you know. I forget if we did this together on Tuesday. But can you imagine if he starts. Colt McCoy and McCoy puts up a two two hundred ninety yard three touchdown no pick day to score thirty one in their game late with a chance to beat the Patriots. Oh Oh yeah we talked about this and we talked about how how unbelievable I mean the most unbelievable part I would miss that I mean I you know I mean but but we both know that that's that's you know like you know not all fairytales and happy endings and this one's not gonna end the happy ending recall what unfortunate what if Sunday the nats win the Redskins win and the mystics out what is the Washington Times and Washington Post handle their front page while the Redskins are clearly inside on page two. Oh that's that's the obvious thing if they beat. I'm kidding. I'm kidding what what's one of them would be on the front page of the paper. Not just the front pages not the sports section I if the Redskins beat the Patriots there on page one what if the nats eliminate the dodgers Sunday Sunday night and they win the series then they're on pace one and then what is what does the sports section look like well well then I. I don't know that's the post for sex. I don't care about this. Why would I care about their sports. I don't know I don't know what else do you have the caps one last night. I watched. I actually watched a lot of the game. You know what I mean. I love Jobe locker. They're awesome. It's such a great impairing and it has been for so long. Just like buck and Phil were and I and I enjoy watching them and you know I don't watch a lot of regular season hockey but last night I I was watching because the Saint Louis had the banner hanging thing from their Stanley Cup. It was a year later from when the caps did it you know last year for their season opener and and I watched a lot of the game I mean the American League game jumped out real quickly with Diaz hitting that home run in the first and then hitting home run in the third and that game was over ver- early almost like Milwaukee was overly except Tampa never made a run back but I watched it and I first of all. I'm saying this to Erin and I know you don't care about the stuff tommy the NBC family of networks to such good job with hockey. It's just perfect and doc. Emrick is just so awesome to listen to call the game but anyway they they they got they got an overtime winner from Verona to win the game. That's all I have on that game ovechkin and I in watching the game it. It seemed to me that the caps dominated the blues but they went to overtime in one the game anyway a lot of people picking the caps ups Tommy to be deep into the postseason. If not a Stanley Cup winner well okay. That's it yeah I mean I mean come on. I mean what am I supposed to decide. Oh you don't play you would have put you in a breakdown their third line no out in the first round last year what everyone thought they were good to dominate. I mean we're we're we're so don't talk to me about by the way you'll love it. You'll love this and I'm GonNa find it real quickly. I got one of those tweets from one of those people that didn't like that. I said I'm not a big caps fan which I I don't know if I said it with you and Tuesday or yesterday on the podcast you send you send it with me on Tuesday. I've said it a million times. I'm that's of the four teams that's the one that I don't have a lot of passion for not a big hockey guy and I've just never been a huge caps fan like I don't sit there and live and die on everything so anyway I i. I'm looking for it and I can't find it but basically I got one of those tweets. It said I heard what you said about the caps if you're going to care so little and you're not going to root caps. I'M NOT GONNA listen to your show anymore in one of those and Gosh. I hope you reach out to that person. Yeah smooth that over. I I did I I I. I basically said I'm not going to you know it's it's it look. You don't have a rooting interest in any of the local teams there are there are other talk show host. I know one on your station. That is a forty niners fan not a Redskins Fan in. We've had that at our station before that that's not white the people I mean I think it is a benefit personally in local sports talk radio to be a fan of the teams and to really have an understanding ending of a of the teams you know and I am. I do have an understanding the root for every other team very passionately but for whatever reason I've just never been a big hockey fan. I love a playoff hockey but basically I just said look. I'M NOT GONNA fake emotional investment in a team that I don't have it for you. Know the they're good team. I love playoff off hockey. I just don't have the same feeling when they lose or win that I do for other teams and whatever he he got upset. He said Rub them the wrong way. I'm sorry about that but I that's the way I feel. I did watch the game last night. However I am amazed by Ovechkin who at thirty four years old and count it out pretty much before the Stanley Cup finals in the Stanley Cup winning season has probably played at some of his best hockey the last two seasons and it looks like you know based on last night. He may be in line for another great year. He's Altana title rate. DC Athlete Right. He's he's very pleased to being Mount Rushmore as an all-time DC athlete. Oh I think he is on Mount Rushmore. I mean he's it's not the greatest athlete in the history of the town but he's he's among he is..

"dodgers" Discussed on The Kevin Sheehan Show

"That's Kevin in DC after you go to mybookie. Dot Ag you play you win. You get paid. We'll get to the redskins shortly and what Jay Gruden Gordon said yesterday because it certainly would appear that we are headed towards a colavero start on Sunday against the Patriots but I wanted to ask you about not something because I talked about it on the radio show this morning and I didn't see all of this stuff until late yesterday about Tony Kornheiser comments about the front page of the Sports Section in the post yesterday so let me catch everybody up to speed the post yesterday the print edition front page page of its sports section if you didn't see it they put the mystics game two loss to Connecticut at the very top of the sports sections top page front page with the headline Della John Hurt as son draws even now for those of you. That don't know what that means. That's about the mystics best player. Elaine de la Don. She was the league. MVP The sun is the Connecticut Sun. That's the team. The mystics are right now playing in the WNBA finals. I'm being in specific about that because I think there are a lot of people that actually don't know what's going on in the WNBA finals but the mystics are really good team. The series is dead even at one game apiece and they played game two on Tuesday night same night that the nats were playing the brewers in the wildcard game and on Wednesday morning the Post Post put the Mystic Connecticut game at the top or above the full. That's what they call it right. Tommy above the and for the rest of the front page the sports section and probably two thirds the remaining two thirds of that front page was the nets game where they had the headline won- John for the money is in one for one Soto in his big hit cer- Tony had a problem with the choice that I guess the Editors Make Tommy's at the editor's that make these decisions yes. They do okay so on his podcast yesterday. He said it's insane that the Washington Post stripped stripped that mystics game across the top the nets got the bigger play and he's saying that they got more of that front page but you've gotta be kidding me and I said I yeah I mean. You've got to be kidding me. You know he just didn't think that the mystics deserve that by the way he drew a ton of criticism for those comments including including a comment from a reporter at the Post. Her name is able Wallace. I don't know what she writes but she responded on twitter saying Imagine Agean watching the nets win this is in response to Tony's response imagine watching the nets win and feeling those beautiful feelings in seeing that giant happy picture on the front page age and then thinking you know it soured this the presence of women how utterly pathetic is what Able Wallace. She's a reporter for the Post. I think what she tweeted out. I know Tony Pretty well. I can guarantee you that Abe completely missed the point. It had nothing to do with women it had to do with which which one of these two teams deserve the above the fold headline positioning. He would have felt the same way had. DC united been above the fold versus the the nats off of the wild card win being in that spot in my view Tommy. He's a hundred percent right now. I don't understand the inner workings of this and this is going to rely on you to help me here but from the perspective of being a reader being post subscriber. I still get the post delivered now. I don't always read the print edition I read the online edition probably more but I love Sunday mornings with my Washington Post sports section and I get the New York Times delivered on Sundays indies well with coffee and breakfast and a Bagel. I liked that I liked the addition. I still get USA Today's Friday edition because I'd like to spend section in USA. I'd say today like to spread it out even though it's been reduced to like two and a half pages but my perspective is from what my expectations of the post would be and that maybe by the way at complete odds with what makes better business sense what makes better editorial sense. I don't know but I would have thought that in ah I it's not what I would think I know that there is a significantly bigger audience for the nets wildcard game then for the mystics. WNBA championship game. I promise you that there is no chance that the number of people interested in that mystics game isn't a tiny fraction of the number of people interested in the Nats brewers game so I ask you. Was that a mistake. I don't know if it was a mistake. It's it wouldn't have been again. It's a judgment call so I don't think it's a mistake I mean Dan Steinberg tweeted something up and I thought that was pretty accurate. What have I didn't read it. Basically he said you know if they made these judgments solely on who would read stories then they'd run. Dallas cowboys stories and car crashes in the paper and that would be it. I mean if you may if you made decisions based John. You know how many clicks us that the the online sir but how many eyeballs you get to a story you know you. The cowboys crashes. That's one piece of this like if you're just in it to draw eyeballs okay. That's a good answer editorial royal standpoint from an editorial standpoint I mean do you really come to the conclusion that the mystics get top billing over the nets winning a wildcard game. No no no that that's but again it's it's not there. I don't know if there's a right or wrong. It's a judgment call in something like this. Servian look I I am. I I have led the parade against the idea that we have some kind of obligation to cover women's sports because it's the right thing to do. I mean I've I've let that I mean we basically this is. This is a business. It's not a nonprofit you know operation and you know so I I'm all in. I understand what Tony saying and I agree with them to some extent there. There can't be any debate that it's not even close that what the more significant story is to readership or the nationals over domestics six but I don't have as big a problem with the placement as he does. I don't think it's insane I think and and part of what's going on here is I know I know the way the editors think particularly editors at the post and they have an agenda that comes through I've seen with Olympic Coverage I've seen it before with other coverage. you know it's just I mean they. They have a certain feeling that they have some kind of greater duty here in terms and and it makes them look good among their other editors in the business at the New York Times and the La Times which is all they really compete with in terms of that so there's a lot going on here here. I don't think it's insane. I think it was the wrong decision but again. It's a judgment call Aaron. What did you say I was saying. I don't know if that was much as editorial all decision to put it top as it was designed decision with with the way they laid that out and especially with that weird at across the bottom which I find more offensive than anything was the ad there's the bottom injure so was just a big ad across the bottom took up some space but the way they did with the kind of three quarters of a bit on the nats and then just kind of that top thing I it seems like the post is socially the person general when they had the layout they put the one smaller story up top and then the rest the page is the one big story so I feel like. It's almost a design decision. More than an editorial decision may be right. Maybe right away ads ads on on the front pages of of sections. That's only something that's happened in in in the last ten or twelve years or so maybe longer but I mean for years ears you would never put an ad on the front page of the sports section but now I mean I'm surprised they know put them on the front page period. I think he would have been. I think you you may have been okay with the insane. Description had been like AFIFA qualifier that they put up there had been soccer. You probably would have been more of upset. I don't know I mean here's the here's the bottom line in this day and age. I don't really care 'cause I don't use the print. Edition is the primary way I don't use the post. Sports Section is away to really get news anymore. I mean it's it's too outdated and even online with all due respect because I like a lot of columnists. I Love Barry. I love Dave Shannon. I Love Sally you know and I like. I like a many of their columnists but I don't post doesn't break stories. They're beat reporters really don't break a lot of stories when it comes to the teams that I care about you. Get more of that from you know some of the bloggers and some of the people on Sports Talk Radio or some of the people you know that are you know beat reporters sports talk radio stations or in town than you do from the post but I do like the columns but I didn't see it before the radio show and before the podcast yesterday but afterwards I I looked at it and if I'd seen that first thing in the morning I would have been surprised at that very surprised I I understand the reaction completely. I mean it's the the mystics Tommy the game nationally on television. Ah Vision did a zero point three six rating nationally. That's barely even a number that registers. I've no idea what it did locally. I don't think they'll release that number on the nets game by the way because you know I love. This stuff did an eight point eight local rating on tbs the other night which actually okay isn't that it's it's lower than I would have thought it would have been yeah same with me now. It's TB Isis at it's TBS. It's not network work. You know there is a cable versus network. I don't know the I'm not a ratings experts so I don't know if that's a huge difference anymore. I know it some difference. Prince because there are people in homes without cable television so they couldn't see the game on TBS. They would have been able to see the game. Had it been on Fox as is an example Actually there's a lot more people now without cable television than there have been and maybe in the past ten years with some yeah the the quarterback yeah. They're they're right. They're getting it from all these other places but anyway on the nets as an exam as a comparison for game five against the Cardinals Twenty twelve did a sixteen point seven did a ten point three in game five against the dodgers in two thousand sixteen. I couldn't find the cubs number but if my memory serves me correctly directly it was like a fourteen or fifteen in game five against the cubs so I am surprised that it was an eight point eight I would have thought it would have been a little bit higher but yeah but by the way just also as another sort of as an aside. I've talked a lot about how we've done this together about how in the Redskins fan base has been roading how the television ratings are awful and you know when I did this this morning. A couple of people tweeted me and said you know oh well. You know how that the redskins ratings look. When we've ripped the REDSKINS television ratings that's in comparison to what the redskins used to do not in comparison to what other teams in town do because his bad is the redskins are as dysfunctional as they are as much as their fan base is eroded voted they are still by far and away the Kings of sports television in this market that game against the giants on Sunday which was is a super low near all time low rating for the REDSKINS for a regular season game and by the way a bad game that was over early. It still did a twelve twelve point three you know the Nats playoff game didn't eight point eight so it still you know significantly higher than anything else by the way that twelve point three. We didn't talk about this. The other day at twelve point three seven eight years ago would do for a preseason game. It's really exactly the remarkable the third preseason the fourth year in game yeah I mean it is so remarkable hell far they've fallen but for those that then and will it be by extension will say well. Why do you talk so much redskins on the podcast or why do you talk so much redskins on the radio show well because it's still by far far away the thing that appeals to the majority significant majority in this city despite of how bad they are It's not just the redskins skins. It's the NFL. It's the NFL most city. I'd be better off the way this is the way an offer we to Dan's point. We'd be you better off talking about the cowboys on a daily basis. If we were looking for the largest audience potential even in this city then talking about a couple a couple of the other teams which will lead the conversation for now. Yes we've Steinberg and I have had that discussion for years that who what what the paper would have the co pay for it would have the guts start covering the cowboys on a regular basis. Well you know I I swear to you. I have wait remember. We did a couple of times we we jokingly did like Ravens at one or cowboys at one hundred years. I do think I mean the cowboys ratings wise television ratings wise have now you know in the Ravens to have out drawn the redskins late and regular seasons a couple of times the last a few years you know people and talking head to head like one o'clock one o'clock for twenty four twenty five so I have thought about with respect to the radio station which which.

"The clock. Dodgers podcast. I'm your host Neal with me is Adam life. Good over there, Mr. humidifier. Breathe in free in clear, free and clear. It's been cold here in Florida like allowed to say that. What do you think cold is? I don't know. Man. I mean it's been like anything below seventy is called. Anything will seventy is legitimately called at this point. Good down there. You know, he was in the fifties sixties and may have crack the forties little bit. I don't know. But yeah, man some kind of cold front or something. And man, we all had a break out, those jackets and sweaters, and sweat, pants, and all that good stuff. But I know it's kind of like disrespectful to say to people who are actually in cold places now man. It was nice here today. I think we have thirty. One of the things you hear down here, a lot is whenever you say to somebody who's like from another place, which is majority of people when you go. It's cold. I hear to the year for Florida. That's like that's the line. That's the hit him with the year for Florida. It's cold. That's a line. You get hit with. That's a cool guy status when you say that it's cold for Florida because I'm so tough guy, some really quality people there. And then you got the people who are trying to prove everybody wrong. I'm out here in shorts and sandals and flip flops. What do you guys actually co for? Yeah. Yeah. No, I can't dig that, like, no matter where you are once dress, a little, like seventy two degrees, which is like classic air conditioner inside temperature. Once he gets any lower than that. I, I don't know. I'm putting on long sleeves. I don't know if you wanna feel the need to pretend like it's not cold if it's fucking. Embrace it. What is your what do you what do you proven here? Mr. macho man, like whatever it was cold. Adam, that's all I can tell you, man. It was called down here. But I hope everything is nice and comfy in Chicago. And in your area. Whatever whatever suburb, you're in still dealing with sauna apartment still sign apartment. Yeah. Conditioner on low right now. It is twenty degrees out is like a deadline when that goes away like when you're expecting that the fall off a little bit. Yeah. Whenever they cut the heat at the end of winter. It's weird. It's so ridiculous. But I guess better this than it being gold. Depends it depends. It's tropical up. So it's a strange way to describe your apartment troppled living where you live. But anyway, autism autism to nil. Thursday night football, we're actually recording this post Thursday night football ended like five minutes ago. I think when we recording this. Too many people surprise. I would say the Cowboys actually won this game thirteen to ten user prize shocked. I mean. It's like the saints turn back into a pumpkin like they looked awful. Yeah. It's just it was rough. I mean the start of the game was rough. I think breeze started with, like, one, maybe two completions and its first seven eight. It's like it just it started really rough. And it didn't they never. They never got a rhythm go. And I don't know if it was just short week or what, but. Yeah. I mean it was it was a rough game and it's not like the Cowboys looked amazing either. It was just I don't know. It was a tough game to watch. I'll be honest. I didn't really watch all kind of was half watching it because it was just. It was it was. No. It was. No chiefs Rams. Yeah. There was particular stood. How about this one and it's weird because like you say go to this game. Somebody else. Hey, what do you think what is game? I'm like, well I expect to win they they've only lost one game. I don't think the Cowboys are going give them number two. But here this is the thing about football, man, it makes you look at jackass here and there. So, yeah, I mean, it wasn't that fun. It wasn't that great for fancy purposes breeze. Like you said it was never got on things. He only had one hundred twenty seven passing yards. One touchdown one interception. The running backs didn't really do too much. I guess Camara, gave you a little bit action if you should if your. But no touchdowns from those guys, nobody really caught the ball you care about on this, your key Keith Kirkwood fan. He got the only touchdown for the for the saints and on the cowboy side of the ball Dak Prescott did too much better than Brees Elliott Elliott came away. Good. If you're an Elliott owner, you're happy with it is game. I think that's the only guy that's like super happy Cooper little bit. But yeah, Elliot's that people really came away probably really happy with the outcome when you agree. Yeah. I would agree. I mean Cooper and PR leagues fifteen points us real solid. But ultimately, I mean this game was pretty rough in, in less your big fan, and I don't know. I just think it's just so fascinating when we have these teams like the saints that just looked so dominant we after week after week. And then they turn back into a pumpkin and it's like it just happens, so effortlessly, it's it's wild in your fantasy playoffs and you're dependent on the way your league up could be a wild can. The actual playoffs started. And this is what you're you're saints do for you. Man. They, they rolled all season long. And then just like you know what when you need as most whereas gonna fail on you. And that's what they did. So this is going to affect some teams for sure who are used again points from their saints but there's really not too much to speak about in this game. I don't wanna talk about Cooper. I don't like the guy stone allow shade at my raiders recently. So we're not gonna talk about them right now. But other than that anything else you want to talk about this game. And he had anything at a recap is not really an exciting recap for this one. No. I mean, you know, Cooper's look great ever since he got to the Cowboys. Start them. It's about him right now. I mean you weren't going. I mean those talking about that Chris, Qatar. Michael, Gallo, he's really turned the corner resents franchises. It's just there's been a lot of players rookie over the year. And you know you go. Marius thomas. No one's really made is good of a transition as a marker has served its like does that you're cutting out..

"And I think now I mean, the the problems even more Boston is become even more pronounced now because the fastball and the slider almost like the same pitch. Right. I mean, he's kinda let me ask you this. If if we didn't have it on the scoreboard where it comes up ninety eight slider on the scoreboard would could you? Tell different slider changeup. I couldn't I can't I watching box. I can I can I can tell his curve, I know is curve. I know his fastball the rest of it, and it's not crucial. I'm just saying this is general Pinon. Yeah. It's hard. It's hard to tell a lot of times like you'll. I mean to me it's always been kind of reaction of the hitter. Right to to me at all expense. You know, you go to spring training. And you see these guys throw bullpens. I can't tell the difference between I ninety eight honestly like eighty to be all it all looks ridiculous. That's actually stand there and watch it. Yeah. But you know, when when you can't tell us like say like when Strasbourg I came up remember just like the guys couldn't even get the bad. Right. So then you kind of know like, okay, this is really hard because professional hitters can react to it. If Kershaw is back with the dodgers, or whatever it is decided to do his legacy with the dodgers always going to be talking about what he didn't do in the playoff that's unfair. But you know, what I think this time goes by, you know, take a look at a guy like Harris. Now, who's kind of as time has gone by kind of become in some ways more, you know, people that like watched dodger baseball in that era have very warm feelings toward him. I think the opposite. I mean, I think Carol's is should be lot more famous than ease with dodger fans you saw when he came out to cut one of the first pitches. It was a nice cheer. But I Eric. Air was all time Homer leader in team still is maybe I think I think it's amazing. The kind of the secret it's the the secret out loud around. Here is around town is that everybody wants to say cross best pitcher implant live Kershaw, but everybody stung by the postseason. And I think that's I think you're right battle the standards in L A R differ than anywhere else. And you have to perform at the highest low. Well, yeah, I mean, I just talking about comparing Colfax. No, there's no comparison at all sandy one. And he didn't. And the weird thing. I think is that actually nationally Kershaw enjoys I think better reputation than locally. Yes. Right because nationally people look at stats, right? They look at the regular season numbers as a local fan. What you remember? You know, if you're a kid growing up you remember moments. Well, Kershaw hasn't had those moments those great you had a great column we said people remember Kershaw for either. Harms above his head or hands on his knees. Looking down when it's one of the other. But as much as we talk about as postseason failures, remember, he he mowed down the Blanda Braise this year in the I remember because when they started hundred first, and then they started him second. He was upset and he was like take that. But that was Atlanta breeze. And it was also at home. Yeah. In during the day. And you know, they talk about how the first four innings of day game at dodger state. You can't. You can't see the ball to Carol two hundred seventy homers, the A dodgers all time leader has three eighty nine. Yeah. The franchise LA dodger all time home dodger all he didn't throw out. They had a full slate. A full slate of postseason games three postseason rounds. He didn't throw a first pitch. He caught one. Didn't thought. I bitch. Dave roberts. Love him. I love him. And he didn't a tough spot. He had a bet. I'll I'll start. He had a bad. He had a bad World Series. Yeah. I think what is it? They say, you know, man, strengths and his. Weaknesses kind of spring from the same. Well, and I think that if you kind of look back to say that first postseason, right?.

"I think the front office was negligent in how they went about putting together this team that clearly had flaws, and it was just kinda like, well, we're going to count on the other teams in our division to be bad. We're going to count on the fact that the rest of the league is. Bad and we're still going to kind of back into the World Series. And hope we get lucky right because and that's kind of their general theories. Get to the playoffs in the playoffs are crapshoot you right? You talk to anybody in the front office. They will keep telling you that plow crap crapshoot. Right. So just keep getting in every year. And at some point the balls is going to kinda roll your way. And I don't think you know, when when we've seen these last two World Series kind of play out of crap shoot. Yeah. I don't think. Yeah. You see teams win because you know, what the last two years. I think the better team won last year. I think that the dodgers actually we're kind of fortunate to push it to a seventh game that Houston was clearly the best team this time. You know? Yeah. The brakes didn't go the dodgers way. But like, you know, those things come out to watch at some point the better team wand up winning, you know, and I think they're going to have a lot of questions kind of moving forward from here negligent negligent. Devastation. I just think people can sit back and some fans will say well, thank you dodgers, we got to World Series. But I think most fans are like enough's enough. This is if you're get the if you're going to get their win the damn thing if you have the most money anybody in baseball, you had the largest attendance of anybody in baseball. You have a great TV deal, which nobody can watch. But you making a lot of money eight billion dollars on TV deal that cut out most of Los Angeles. If you're making all this money have always ask. Plus, you have two of the smartest guys. And they are the smartest guys all baseball. Andrew Freeman farms eighty running your team, and you can't win a World Series. And you can get a win it once you get there. No. It's it's devastation in Dylan's. Right. It's talked for years about it's a crap shoot. Just get there. Will you see once you get there? You know, all the analytics offer thing that worked on regular season. Does it work in a short series and elite team a better it just doesn't work before the series started? Did you have? Prediction, who you thought was gonna win it. Yeah. I mean, I I think I predicted the dodgers in seven, but you said dodgers at five I said dodgers at four. Okay. Yeah. Just trolling people. Now, you're calling dodger sweep you. Here's still trolling people. Here's my here's my my that Bill. Dillon said dodgers for once game one ended we ask for new predictions. He said Red Sox in for. Not dodgers and five or six four. Why are you wanna trope you why you won't play with their emotions you got? I mean, the seriously entire city, man. Felt like this about sports when I was like eight. Remember, there's an entire city. They're generations that live in die with the dodgers. In about Bill said about the devastation like I was there. I interviewed you guys before the game. And then I was walking around the crowd in. It just fell a game five. Everybody was nervous. I'm mind euchre shot gives up the home run right away. But it just like the crowd was into it where they were really relaxed or they're enjoying themselves..

"World Series champions. The Boston Red Sox beat the dodgers in five games and celebrated at chevette ravine much to this may of many dodger fans who had a seed the visiting team celebrate on their field for the second straight year this week on a ride early leave late. We'll have a couple of podcast for you. First Dylan, Hernandez and Bill are gonna give us the dodgers perspective from a columnist view where they have outside world where they're thinking of the fans are thinking of the front office or taking what the dodgers could possibly do next season. And then later on this week partout, we're gonna go with the beat writer and McCullough who was with the team since spring training Bill. Shaken the national baseball columnist and hordic steal the new dodger beat writer who came over in the middle season, but was covering the dodgers in the World Series. Interesting to hear the perspective from those. He writers whether every single day. But right now, the state of the dodgers as you'd Dylan Hernandez and Bill Paschke. Dodger fans ain't no not again, not again, not again for the second straight year. Wait to say not again to Dylan implant, you're on the podcast. They don't wanna hear us again. They're not ready for this. For the second straight year dodger fans see the visiting team. Celebrate at SHA. Vez ravine last year Astros game seven this year. The Red Sox sT final score five the one same. Final score a Bill. Because I don't have to work. So I really don't pay like if you watch that Astros game. But all this time. I was convinced they lost seventeen nothing or something. Just because of like how Darvish got blown out of the water. It was only five one. Yeah. It was five to one. Mr darvish. No apology. That's the most. We do not oh, Mr. Darvish at apology. That is the voice of Bill plash key, legendary LA times columnists and recently new columnist Dylan Hernandez for a while that recent how long have you been years couple, quite legendary huge impact. Have you? Join their Bill. How many we'll have you covered. Oh my God up. Just the dodgers. Just general general all my gosh. I don't even think about it over twenty twenty some twenty-five maybe on Dylan to your over to. Yeah. No. You covered beat is. No, no. You never win. I went through the NFC s. Okay. A couple of times the giants clinch to go to the world's the world's. Okay. That's right. So Bill Plaski how many dodgers World Series? Have you seen victory? Oh, one eight hundred eighty eight. Than it a tire story. It's unbelie it's what it's it's unbelievable that it's been since eighty eight it's just thinkable just put it this way or Hershiser is sixty years old in he was last winning pitcher in a world city ended World Series game for the dodgers. And he's sixty now that's how long it's been when you think back at this season, and we're not going to go and just start beating down on the team. And they're like, it's an accomplishment to get to the World Series. I back to back and forty years, but it's still disappointing. Is it a failure? What's the word describe this season Dylan? Well, I think here's the thing is that the league was bad the entirely was down like they should have gotten back. You know, in the fact that they got back with that team to me honestly shows how bad the NFL was probably the best five six for coming from the the American League to me the word is actually negligent..

"Well, there's nobody downstairs to help them out except a bad boy name Mitch pool. He's a kid batboy. So we said Mitch come over here. This is during the game every game one of the World Series. Dodgers local nays dodgers really heavy her dog. So Gibson's their hero. He can't play. It's like the sixth sixth or seventh inning. So he enlists Mitch pool to help him get dressed to help pitch him balls in the cage to put balls on T formula cage finally in the ninth inning. He tells Mitch go tell Tommy I'm ready says what out until Tommy I'm ready mitch's wearing gym shorts in a t shirt. He's not allowed in the dugout. He's a backup. Batboy Mitch, you know, the way to get out there. You gotta tell him. I'm ready. So Mitch goes to the end of the dugout. What are you doing here? Mitch and he screams Tommy said at the foreign from the tunnel. So Mitch is screaming at Tommy those closer to third base. They're based on Tommy Tommy will start looks. You get the hell out of here. I'm trying to Majerus risky somebody kit till I shut up and he said, Tommy Tommy and he's scared to death. Tommy Givi complaint. Play what you play. Holy crap giving place. Tommy ROY was in their grads. Gibson history. So fast for twenty five years. They finally gifts and finally admitted allowed the dodgers to give him a bobble. They allow he didn't really want anything. He wanted nothing to do with. He just wanted to you know, you wanted to be a team victory. He's airtime bath. So he came back to town bobble head first pitch and finally agree to do it. So they announce it though, not the first pitch. Kirk Gibson standing ovation out to the mound walks. This middle aged guy in shorts and a t-shirt guess who. It was the first bridge for it gives us request Mitch pool. No way, Mitch fool. He gave he offered him because all those years later, and nobody had any idea what was going on in Mitchell through the first page for Gibson. Yeah. Man. Dodgers equipment. Mansion now he's a visiting. He's great. Wow. That's why Bill all kinds of. So that's why the dodgers to eighty eight was so special. And so unlikely in the most unlikely team maybe ever win a World Series. Honestly and fans have just been hunger for that and hungry for that. And now in recent years, you've had so much money and so much talent. And he still haven't got it done. And that's why fan just are longing for it. And ended the have a go to game seven last year was devastating it. I almost wish he hadn't even gotten to the playoffs at all losing game seven devastated. A town devastated. The team devastated in for the first couple months of this year. It's a hungry town for this thing and at eighty and then that's why 'cause eight eight lives on and the legend is Bill have a huge role on the arrive early leave late podcast. Thanks glad it's called arrive. Relieve late is a play on because dodger fan Ellie fan. Do. They're the best sports fans. Hey, they are smartest sophisticated fans in the world. "Really excited for the NBA coverage that Tanya, and Dan will have a long with Brad turn of the entire LA time. Staff pumped just to hear them talking. We're gonna get them a lot during the NBA season. And of course, LeBron's making news in LA, but saw the dodgers now for me thirty years ago. Ten years old, Kirk Gibson, home run and topped out of the bed. And I hit my head on the ceiling. Bates. I'll share it with my brother and thinking, okay, the dodgers are gonna go will again last year. I saw them at the World Series. But they haven't won a World Series in a man who was there in nineteen eighty eight covering the dodgers, you know, him. You love him the one and only Bill. My favorite columnists LA times question for you bit in bid Gibson, hit the home run. It was about eight thirty at night. So you in bed at eight thirty. I was laying in a bed in bed, and they've been seven kids there's a room in the house, so those so you're watching the TV from the bed, and then I jumped up from the bunk bagels, the top bunk, and I hit my head and ceiling. Wow. 'cause I was a big dodger fan play baseball. Wow. I knew the story about Jessia Roscoe in black. I would read the LA times believe it or not Bill. My dad and mom were delivered the newspaper into the news racks. So I would help out that always read the sports page. So I knew the names of like jimmer in Alabama and malformed all the names at times head so thinking kid they're going to the World Series game. But they have it one. I had a similar incident in eighty eight. I was in my seat and auxiliary press box covering the game that was doing one of the sidebars. So it's getting toward the end of the game. It's getting the last any I gotta get downstairs. I gotta get my quotes dodgers gonna lose this game. On the mound for the as there's no way to dodgers going to win this game. So I get ready. I go to the elevator door opens. And I get on the elevator. And they get ready to close in this older woman in a Walker's coming up so elver to hold hold the elevator. Hold on. Let this nice lady on the elevator. And as nicely getting on the elevator. I hear the announcement now betting Kirk Gibson. Holy crap. I jump out of the elevator just as it closed. Ran back to my seat us all the home run. No way press box. Reserve love. So I was sitting up there. So I almost missed a home run. I saw I did a lot better than the dude who I think the most famous famous home run is. Of course, the pump. This the second most famous image is the brake lights what I'm talking about the loan brake lines. Do wanna do? Oh my God. I'm trying to leave early. And I missed the greatest moment in baseball history. Well, that guy emailed me about a year ago brake lights, and I'm like, I just don't know how to vet that. I don't know. Whether it's true or not, you know, I didn't know, you know, I was unsure about that guy. But that's so that's a ticket most iconic image. You know, what the most the biggest mystery the home run still is thirty thirty years later. Where's the ball? They never found the ball. Come on. You didn't know that? That's. You didn't know that I have written columns and calms about this trying to find the ball the ball back is back before memorabilia was a big thing. Yeah. So nobody really thought about running and getting the right away. They didn't have it right away. So if you look at the film, and I've looked at the pruder film with this thing. Broken down. It lands at the feet of some guy who picks it up. Yeah..
