"That for 36 years, as have a number of other people that are older than I've been in law enforcement. You my county Sheriff Leon Wilmot has been frustrated for a long time but is help coming because yesterday Arizona Democratic Senator Kirsten Cinema introduced a bipartisan immigration bill along with Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn that would, among other things, at immigration judges. An asylum officers build processing facilities along the border. So migrants are treated humanely and unaccompanied Children are protected. Joining us now NBC News political director and the moderator of Meet the Press, Chuck Todd, Chuck, I prefer the illiterate ID description. The bipartisan border bill. But no matter what you call it, does this thing have a shot at passing? Well, it's interesting, you know, Dick Durbin yesterday the Democratic number two in the Democratic senator who's also part of these immigration working groups seem to indicate that there is some momentum for a lot of smaller immigration bills. Very targeted. This is a targeted bill. The one you talked about with cinnamon corn in this is about creating new processing centers. And as you described it, try toe try to deal with migrants serve sort of at the border itself, trying to Streamline that process. You've got demand for a guest worker program increases because right now, as you know, there's a labor shortage really every industry around the country, but it's getting eggs. Particularly hard so there is some and there's some bipartisan support for all of those items, right? You put them all in one bill, and you know how that gets torpedo. When it comes to immigration. You do these in small little It's uh, targeted things and you can sort of get them passed without Getting major attention that makes sense. Right and again, it's still punch the harder stuff right pathways to citizenship and all of that the dream of deals with sort of right in the moment issues that our immigration related white, one of the two in the moment issues, the migrants surge and the labor shortage. We're talking about Chuck Todd, the moderator of Meet the Press after already agreeing with our governor and sending the National Guard to the border Senator Cinema said yesterday. She also agrees with Governor do see that President Biden needs to declare a national emergency. Along the border. Any chance that's gonna happen? I don't think so. But I tell you, you know, it's very interesting. And I don't know if you read the You know, the TIC Tac and the reporting that's come out since on the whole. Kerfuffle over the refugee cap. You know, it's interesting. Biden himself. Seems to realize this is a this is a growing political problem for him. And so he wanted to say, essentially take a pot take. We got to deal with this search first before we start talking about Increasing refugee cabinet how they managed it clearly his staff and he are not on the same page on this, but I do think they're paying attention to the polls. Look, we got a new poll coming up Sunday. And if we test biting on a whole number of issues is 100 Days Pole you know, overall is ratings were pretty good right? But on a couple of specific areas, his ratings are terrible immigration of one of those where they're terrible. What's interesting is that it doesn't translate into People are basically say, Hey, you're not doing that, Okay? But But it's the the good news for Biden. Is that immigration? Not even in the top five of issues that concern Americans right now, so that's sort of the disproportionate right. They care more about the virus more about the economy and on those scores. They feel pretty good, and it's keeping fighting certainly in a good position above water. But the minute something happens in a negative on the virus or the economy, then that immigration could drag him down right. It could serve as an anchor right that he's not handling this, so they're they're aware of the political growing political problem. Maybe you should ask Americans how they feel about changing the flag right through US House voted to make Washington D C. The 51st state. Do you think is going to pass in the Senate dogs? Not happy. My dog's a little of you. You bring up the statehood, You know, she's got very strong opinions. You know, It's interesting here is look not It isn't happening today, and it isn't happening next year, but what you this is going to happen, and I think within the decade on, I do think the past the D. C. Statehood is through Puerto Rico. On and that is where there is with Puerto Rican statehood. There is some some grown support among Republicans in Florida for that. It is it is DC alone, no chance, but I do think the path is there over the next decade, and if you look at sort of statehood movements You know, they take time. That's for sure. They take time. All right, and Betsy Ross that is Chuck Todd's dog eyes holding off on reselling the flag until we get to 50 to 1 have to do all that I had to do to stars, Not one. "We're down once again, Speaking of down many employers are, too They can't find anybody to work for him. There's ktrh is Jeff Biggs Close. Simply put. It's because under the Biden administration, millions of Americans are still earning more, not working. Importance of that struggle for a while, in large part because unemployment benefits and other benefits coming from the federal government had just made it easier for people to say no, it's becoming harder and harder for employers to find people who are willing to work policy scholar Merril Matthews, who also told Katie Rage there needs to be an adjustment. Employers are facing a labor shortage out there, and that's making it very hard for them to fill the job. This administration simply does not seem to understand economic incentives. "App. Federal Judge Merrick Garland is president Biden's nominee to become attorney general. He testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee today. The hearing lasted most of the day We begin with committee chair Dick Durbin of Illinois. This hearing will come to order today. The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on the nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to be the 86th attorney general of the United States. Judge Garland I wanna welcome you and your family. I want to welcome you back to the Senate Judiciary Committee. I know this return trip. It's been a long time and planning on you're here. Finally, this will be the Judiciary Committee's first hearing of the 117th Congress. Before I turned to my opening remarks. I'd like to just take a few minutes to make some Acknowledgments. I want to welcome my friend, Senator Chuck Grassley as the committee's ranking member. When I first came on the Senate Judiciary Committee 24 years ago, I was the ranking member on subcommittee with you, and we dealt with the issue of bankruptcy. Now Illinois and Iowa sit next to each other. And so did Urban Grassley. We have our differences. But Senator Grassley and I have worked together on important legislation over the years, most recently on criminal justice and sensing reform. I look forward to continuing that work in this Congress. I want to recognize the outgoing chair and ranking member Senator Lindsey Graham, who will join us remotely this morning, and Senator Dianne Feinstein. Senator Graham, as is true of Senator Grassley. Well, we don't always agree, has always been a welcome partner on many issues. Including one of the most challenging issues, immigration, Senator Feinstein. I want to come in for leading the committee Democrats with Grace and resolved over the past four years. I know she will continue to be an important voice on this committee on a host of issues, including in her new capacity as the chair of the Human Rights and Laws subcommittee, which I was proud to charity and past Congresses. I also want to welcome our new committee members who either be here in person. I see one in person and one probably remote senators Padilla And also on the Democratic side, Senator Cotton on the Republican side. I look forward to working with each of you. There's some historic first in the Judiciary Committee this year, Senator Padilla, our new senator from California, will be chairing the subcommittee on immigration, citizenship. Border safety. I'm honored that he's the first Latino senator to chair that subcommittee, and we look forward to his leadership. Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey will chair the subcommittee on criminal justice and counter terrorism. He's the first Black senator to chair a judiciary subcommittee. And we could not imagine a better choice at the helm of this particular subcommittee to all of our other members who are returning to serve on the committee. Welcome back. I want to thank all the committee members for agreeing to hold this committee hearing and vote on Judge Garland's nomination. It is a great honor to serve on this committee. The Senate established the Judiciary Committee by resolution on December 10th 18 16, making it among the very first standing committees of the Senate. This committee has seen many consequential debates and approved many important nominations and landmark legislation in the committee's history. There has only been one prior Illinois senator to serve his chair Judge Garland Lyman. Trumbull, who led the committee from 18 61 to 18 72, and during his term of service was a Democrat, a Republican, a radical Republican and a Democrat. Again. He was the most bipartisan senator, you could imagine His tenure was also distinguished by passage. Of historic legislation, the 13th 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution. The Freedman's bureau acts of 18 65 and 18 66 Civil Rights Act of 18 66. The last of these was introduced by Trumbull ultimately became the nation's first civil rights law. As chair, Trumbull saw a nation torn apart by original sin slavery and widespread violence and injustice that continued even after the 13th amendments. Passage is African Americans throughout the nation face race. System. Our nation is still dealing with the consequences of these injustices. People of color face systemic racism, and we're still working to rid this nation of the horrific legacy of slavery and Jim Crow. This committee could make a difference. We have the jurisdiction and the opportunity to do it through legislation, oversight and nominations, including this nomination of Merrick Garland to service our nation's next attorney general. There have been few moments in history where the role of attorney general and the occupant of That post It mattered more Judge Garland should you be confirmed, and I have every confidence you will be. You'll oversee a Justice Department at an existential moment. After four tumultuous years of intrigue, controversy and brute political force, the future of the department is clearly in the hands of the next attorney general Under attorney general Sessions and successor Bill Bar. The Justice Department literally became an arm of the White House committed to advancing the interest. The President Trump his family and his political allies. It came as little surprise then that the U. S Department of Justice became the Trump Department of Justice General Bar stated clearly that he believed the attorney general was the president's lawyer, not the nations. "It was one of my worst votes creating the hundred to one and all the rest of it. I finally feel like I'm getting it. Right. And the fact that I get it right means a lot of people will be treated, right? Not all of them. Sit a lot to do. This is just the opening. It is the first step as we characterize it. There's a lot more that needs to be done. But we have finally decided I think as a nation moving toward the feeling we're gonna fight the war on drugs with our brains, not our muscles. We're going to think about ways that stop drugs coming into this country to deal with the interdiction of and also deal with the treatment of people in a much different way, it reflects the fact that the opioid epidemic which has taken over in this country has opened the eyes of people everywhere too. The fact that says a problem of the inner city anymore. There isn't any suburb to wealthy. No town too small to avoid this opioid epidemic. And people who are looking at the victims are not seeing poor inner city living people they're seeing their brothers and sisters and sons and daughters. So they're starting to think about drugs and a different way. I think that we are evolving as nation as we think about drugs and how to deal with them. I believe it's a scourge. It breaks my heart to hear when someone is addicted. But at least now we're not saying, it's a moral curse. In your finished were saying to them. It's a disease we're gonna treat it. Well, I wanna put it to you this way if you were not a Senator back in the eighties when those mandatory minimums and three strikes route into crack cocaine despair, if you were not a Senator that would have happened. Anyway, it was where the heard was going, but I will say this. If you were not a Senator now the correction for that would not have happened you or the guy on our side of the aisle and. I know you're going to try to clearly the White House. Indispensable partner clearly Grassley in Inle indispensable partners. But as democrat in the democratic caucus, I know for sure if dick Durbin was not a Senator we would not have this day. And I want to tell you as you know, I live in an inner city community with people who have been adversely affected by an unfair unjust war on drugs. You are a champion my friend, and I am so grateful that you're my friend, and that you have allowed me this last five years to be your partner on getting this over the finish line. And then a great partner the man who brought me into politics was impulse. I am. And he was a Senator in my state before me he had some basic rules, and I live by when it comes to public service. He said look for two things in public service honesty and somebody who's willing to help the helpless that those were the north star the guideline when it comes to what I want to be a member of the Senate, and I'll bet you do too well beyond I mean because this is the thing. For me in this day of politics were money pouring in using pick constituencies that have no lobbyists. You fight for people who come who. Don't don't nobody fights for that are marginalized, and it's often lonely place. But I Meyer you so much and me my career be marked by the values that you exhibit every single day told you visit federal prisons pretty well. You are. But that and I'm sorry to get you know, one of these guys says before you tell me about your religion for show to me how you treat other people's. I don't wanna talk religion. But you know, Matthew twenty five Jesus speaks. You know, when you visit me in prison when I was in prison you visit me when I was hungry. You fed me. It goes through this long list. And if you view read that I've seen you not preach. I don't even know much about your faith, sir. "Again to another edition of lift every voice. I cannot tell you. I am so excited about this episode because I am just literally hours have now passed since what was yesterday affectively around eight a little after eight o'clock where we passed a historic piece of legislation a call the first step act, which will get to in a second. But my guest today really is my champion on criminal Justice reform in the United States Senate when I was a very new Senator about five years ago, I came to the Senate to work on criminal Justice reform. It was one of the things that drove me to want to try to a run for the Senate in the first place and the guy who when I landed on the Senate floor and the democratic caucus who kind of took the under his arm would already had the seminal piece of legislation. Do sentencing reform is a man named dick Durbin, the Senator from Illinois. And I have him is my guest today. He led the charge to get this legislation passed, and I just want to thank him in welcome to this podcast. Thank you Senator van. Thanks corey. And it was a team effort. And I I was just happy as heck that you were by my side. It was a great great feeling on the floor last night. I think we made history. Clearly, we did. And I'd like to just go back a while. Because Senator the thing that makes me sad about you is that some of the best beaches. I've ever heard you give there's no press to listen to when you stand up, and you corral or caucus on moral issues. You are really one of the people that is a moral voice in the democratic caucus talking about the people that are often left behind the folks that don't have lobbyists. I've seen you stand up and talk for for immigrants and DACA kids. And then clearly on criminal Justice reform before I even got to the United States Senate. Now, you said something in the press conference, which was I thought it was really moving. Because you just told the truth about how we got into a certain hole, and how you've been on a mission for years and years and years now to get it maybe we can start there. Well, I said at the press conference, and I've said many times, you don't often hear Senator preface speech by saying let me tell you about the worst vote I ever cast. The worst vote ever cast was nine hundred eighty six along come crack cocaine, and we were told be frightened very frightened. It's dirty. It's easy to produce highly addictive. "Have you think that there's going to be any kind of doc agreement? No, I think that's going to be a standalone thing. I don't think that'll be part of the they got they're trying to just fund the government. So they're not going to do a DACA thing on this, though, they they will talk about doing a comprehensive immigration thing. But then it'll be dick Durbin comes in. And Rex it at the last minute with with the other goof-balls that are in his caucus did the Democrats cannot afford to have immigration repaired. Okay. Structure is speaking they cannot okay, they cannot because for as much as they give grief to the Republicans and saying you guys are just a rural irrelevant party. You don't control anything anywhere all day controller cities, and that's that's wonderful. That's great. Hillary Clinton won all the city's and lost the election because we still have the electoral college. Republicans need to make inroads into the suburbs. And I said to a couple of friends of mine overnight, locally speaking if the Republican party in San Diego decided they were going to get focused on trying to win elections and the Republican party in the state of California decided they were going to get focused on actually winning elections. Maybe go out there and reach out to some nontraditional groups to bring them in as part of your coalition because the Democrats have created the impression that every immigrant in America today is poor and from central America, South America, or Mexico. That is not the case. There are millions of immigrants that come into this country who are entrepeneurship from South Asia who are entrepreneurs coming in from Africa who are entrepreneurs coming in from South America coming in from from any number of places Asia who wanna come in and be a part of this country, and they want to build up this country. They want to do that. They're not coming in for an angle they're coming in for a shot. Those are the people the Republicans in California ought to be trying to win. Those are the people that the Republicans in San Diego ought to be trying to win instead of just having Christmas parties and putting out Trump twenty twenty terrible towels..

If there is no truth to her charges. The FBI investigation will show that or are you afraid that they might not? FBI does not reach. You know, you know, this is, you know, that's a funny question. Senator dick Durbin questioning Brent Cavanaugh earlier and urging for a halt to the proceedings our coverage continues earlier in the day. Jeff we brought you roughly four hours of testimony from cavenaugh accuser. Christine Blasi Ford and WBZ's Kim Tunnicliffe spoke this afternoon with a psychological trauma expert about the impact of Ford's testimony on sex abuse, survivors, UMass Lowell psychology. Professor Doreen Arcus teaches a course in trauma and child development. She says the emotional testimony of Christine Blasi Ford, and perhaps more importantly, the dismissive and accusatory remarks from some senators have the potential to cause sexual assault victims to relive their abuse. No matter how many years have passed. Those deeply-felt senses are really very much ingrained. Your body remembers the kinds of memories that are evoked. "Have a very tenuous pathways regaining the majority in the senate to begin with but if dick durbin continues at pays ended repented democrats who currently are in red states end up voting no it could be that the republicans will meaningfully expand their majority in the united states senate the president may wanna win this one by a narrow margin despite the fact that a big endorsement from the united states senate would be a good endorsement for for judge brett kavanagh it doesn't seem like we're getting anywhere near a big endorsement it won't be a landslide vote it won't be a unanimous decision it'll be nothing like that so maybe it would be better just to be close and let these democrats sort of kamikaze their way out of the united states senate autism sticky wicket isn't it i always wanted to use that phrase conversation i finally get to use it here's the thing the democrats do i think determine and could play devil's advocate they can afford to lose a couple of seats because according to the cook political report which we talk about yeah they have revised the house readings map for every congressional district in the us they did it on friday they found that democrats have a shot up to fifty six seats in november so losing losing some seats i is not necessarily going to be a terrible thing for them now i know that we're not talking necessarily just the house or talking about the senate as well but i wonder if for them they're willing to fall on that sword to deny the president this pick just out of principle because if they pick up seats in the house that that to that that's a blue wave and it does it does help stop of a lot of the president's agenda right however the president's still going to get get to nominate somebody else so that he's always still going to get to nominate somebody else in that seat so whether they like it or not eventually the president is going to get to fill that supreme court seat i don't think the democrats can keep that seat open and keep it at a at a out of eight justices a four four court until the twenty twenty i don't think that that's possible i don't see that happening i could be wrong but i think that's their game plan at this point is that we're just going to keep obstructing obstructing obstructing keep it a four four court and this way they don't have to you know they have a little worried about any day of little recourse to do that short of physically barricading the doors of the united states senate well michael moore said that he was ready to surround the capital and michael moore pretty much could on his own he could literally sit around the capital michael moore could do it.
