"And I just think there you're just setting themselves up for disaster if they bring back big Ben next year, and even if that means they don't have a great answer, But maybe it means you kind of take a dive for a year. And you find yourself at the top of the draft next year and you go and replace it. Just figure out some parts with the Steelers this year. Just take a step back. Well, the Steelers though they're not the type of organization that takes dives. I mean, even last year with Big Ben out, they went eight. Nate and they were in the playoff race until week. 17. Type with the last time they were foreign 12 1 of the last time they were that bad. Mike Tomlin's never had a losing season. He's been there for 16 years, so if they did do that It would be a complete anomaly. It'll be something they never ever do. And the Steelers also were 11 know this year. If you went back to the week before Thanksgiving, we were all saying Steelers, an Arrowhead or the Chiefs at Heinz Field of the A F. C championship game. Now, of course, a month and a half later that look completely different, but are they that far from being a team that can compete for a Super Bowl? I mean, they lose, but to pre they lose hated Bush. They lose. Devin Bush was a three starters slash stars and defense If those three guys stay healthy I mean, don't you think the Steelers were probably still playing? The definitely a defensive oriented team first, and it was a big reason why they were 11 and Oh, and I guess your question then would be Ben. Big Ben making the money he's making. If the team is defense first. Can you have it? If those three guys stay healthy, they're the two seed. Instead of they were the three seed and as the two seed, they would get the Colts at Heinz Field. They probably win that game and probably right. And obviously you could correlate the fact that they went one and four. Down the stretch with when finally Bud, you breathe to pre went because they were, you know, they were treading water after that once it was Devin Bush once, But Dupri went down their passwords took a hit, They completely fell apart. Yeah, the idea. So I get all of that I get the Steelers could sell that and say we're gonna get our defense back. Let's go for it. But blaming those injuries and doing all that doesn't take away the fact that big Ben look absolutely cooked. And I know the stats from that brown game will read that he had this unbelievable aerial attack drone 400 yards. This that the other He came a week off to rest and he couldn't have looked worse. In that first half look, terror of them threw them out of the game. And, really, when the defense did suffer injuries. You can't bank that you're gonna be completely healthy on the defensive side of the ball next year. They can't survive behind Big Ben anymore carrying the load, So you really just need to cross your fingers and hope your defense stays healthy and he doesn't turn it over enough to make a run. I don't know. I think that's a lot to ask him a Steelers next year in a division by the way, where the Browns are only gonna get better job burrow in the Bangles are only gonna be better. And the freaking Baltimore Ravens rules. Well, I think of the Steelers bring back Big Ben for one last ride, and Ben wants to play with this is also up to him. You have to be able to run the football and that means spending this first round draft pick. On a running back or signing a running back in free agency and helping the offensive line out because James Connor can't do it. Connor was also injured this season. You can't have better office burger throw for 4500 yards next year. You have to be able to limit his usage, and that's another crucial part of this. They put the bulk of the offense of responsibility on a 38 year old reconstructed elbow. That was stupid. D A. What you just laid out with the Steelers have to do to help Big Ben. Is the blueprint for the 2018 giants, and they're still paying the penalty of that. Taking sake want Barkley hoping, Gather free, Let's let's run and banking on the fact you had these great defensive players that they had signed a 2016. That, But I mean, the Steelers were gonna pick a 26 or 27. The Giants pick the number two. I would never see. The Steelers should take a running back to I know that. But this first round asset 27 or two. I know there's a big difference is still enormous. And I think Investing your first round pick because you want to try to make one last run. Big Ben, you look cooked. On a running back. You're asking for trouble. You're going to pay for the next 23 years down the one. I don't feel that way about running backs. Take it in the twenties. I think that Once you get out of the top 20, I think I'd be fine taking a running back. Do you think it's really that bad of investment? Take a running back like Clyde Edwards a layer at 32. That was a terrible investment by the Chiefs. Well, all I know is this theater for 14 NFL teams this year, and only three of them had running backs ever taken in the first round, and only one of them was a team that took a running back in.

"Show. I do every day and I don't get it. I mean, I think the offenses are comparable. Maybe you could say that. They're a little bit better offensively in Tennessee. But the Steelers defense is much better and You know, the Titans just lost Taylor Lewan. Um and I think the fewer the better team. I think we're going to win the game, so I can't say I totally understand why that line is what it is, and the viewers were getting points. I was all over that. On the even money sports betting podcast. Is it because maybe of the Devin Bush loss and they just thinking Derek Henry's just going to run right through my I guess that would be the explanation, right? I guess they're saying that the Devin Bush loss is more significant than the Taylor Lewan loss. I guess I would say, um, I think Bush probably hurts them more in the passing game, not being able to cover tight ends. And John Smith kind of beat up and I don't know. I mean, I I think the left tackles more important than a been off the ball linebacker Ross Stalker here with those Packers. Texans are the Packers in danger of losing this wonder Will they take care of the Texan's on Sunday? I think they'll take care of him, but I am curious to see how they respond. You know they got they got their brains bashed in by the buck. Some kind of curious to see if they're able to come back and get back to the way they're playing before that. I think Houston's gonna hang with him. The Houston team will score a bunch of points in that game. Really, I think the Packers win, but I do think it's a competitive game. Then now Adam Schefter just came across the screen. That's official now Abie to Tampa Bay on a one year deal Ross Tucker here with us for a few more moments. I guess, Antonio's Brown's former team and Brady's former team, the Patriots, we talked about a little bit earlier. 40 Niners pats on Sunday at Ross. I am a Patriot fans, and I basically declared that the fortnight is we're going to make the playoffs two weeks ago, then they impressed up against the Rams. I kind of feel like the 40 Niners. They're going to make this two in a row in a close game that the 40 Niners just find a way. Your thoughts. Yeah. You know, I don't really know especially what to expect. From the Patriots at this point, you know was last week a a one week aberration, or is this kind of who they are and who can is now? Because previously whenever the Patriots have had a down week, as you know, and these questions have come up, they always bounce back. They always find a way to play well after that and get a win. That's when they had Brady, though I mean are are they the same way now, with Cam Newton. We're about to find out one of the most intriguing games of the day for sure. When we get to Seattle and the Cardinals. Does this have upset in favor of the Cardinals or diss Seattle? Just outscoring because the Cardinals defense better than what I thought it was going to be going into the year. You have a pirate Murphy and Buddha Baker, Right. I love that. By the way. I love guys like that. They're both considered undersized. They're both considered. Hey, you know what? Um They're not great 40 times. Those are ballers, man. Those guys are straight up ballers there. Play speed is amazing, And I love it, so I think You're going to see. Um I think it's gonna be awesome game. I think it's like 31 28 35 31. Ultimately, though, it just seems like Russell Wilson always comes through at the end. I kind of suspect that he will again. I think he'll find a way to, um to win the game late. Like you always does. I do say though I kind of like The Cardinals with the point I said this on the even money podcast at 3.5 to go through that key number against Seattle. I wouldn't be shocked if Arizona won the game, and even if they lose, I do think it's close. Deal like the Panthers, Plus the 7.5 7, depending on where you got the line. No Michael Thomas know Emmanuel Sanders for the Saints Panthers Saints on Sunday. Yeah, that is my favorite bet of the week. Carolina getting the points don't understand that line it all We talked about this on bed sweats. We talked about it. On even money podcast like for what? I mean the same haven't blown anybody out this year. And now there's no Michael Thomas. They've got issue don't mean it's him, and the Panthers only lost one game by more than a touchdown, and that game was Against The box when the Bucks which is running the clock out, Leonard Fournette took it like 70 yards, So I really don't I really don't get that at all. My favorite better. The week is Carolina getting the points Wrapping up the Ross Tucker does a great job. He's here with us on CBS Sports Radio bears the Rams. Which team do you believe in Mohr? And what team do you think is more of a threat throughout the rest of the season? I would have said Rams until last week against the Niners. Now I'll say the bears its ugly They're winning a different way. But they're winning. Defense is really good. Special teams is really good, and the offense does just enough. And people don't want it, like only other top teams are all you know M v P candidate quarterbacks. That's not how Chicago is going to roll..

"It makes adds the AA, right. We got it now. Hey, Baker, look over your shoulder. That's the fancies boy. So when we talk about the Pittsburgh Steelers, what did we learn yesterday? Did we learn that they are better than we were giving them credit for, or just that they're better than the Browns. I think they're a really good sound football team. Probably underrated but still have to just pause and wonder until we start seeing them play the Ravens where they are in the class of the A F. C and we're gonna get a couple those taste of the Ravens coming up very quickly. Think too, in the next six weeks or so, so I think they're really good. Devin Bush is going to be a big loss for them. Big loss. Look, their pass. Rush still gets after it. Even without him. Ben Roethlisberger doesn't matter Who the receivers are. These guys continue to score touchdowns. They're really good, really underappreciated. It's kind of weird. It feels like almost as a public. We're waiting for the shoe to drop on the Steelers. Whether that's a big Ben injury, you know whether it's just the Ravens will show him who's the balls in the ABC North? Whatever it is, they deserve to be there and Boy, You read that promo? How about them in the Titans? That's a great game. A good, many great game for both those themes Sunday Great game. And let's just detail with the FC playoffs would look like right now. The Chiefs. The Ravens. The Steelers, the Titans and the Bills. How good Are the top five in the A F. C and the Patriots aren't anywhere near that realm. It's refreshing to know the pact stinks. We don't worry about that this year. It's also awesome because those five teams are all legit teams going into January, assuming that they stay relatively healthy, where they are right now, which also sets the stage for she's gonna be eight hours away from Monday afternoon football of the Chiefs and Bills later. How good is that? I can't wait to talk about that tomorrow. And by the way, if the bills don't look like they belong, and they lose the back to back contenders don't sleep on the Dolphins winning KFC East. 33 3. I know. I said, Bill's a little door wide open for him. You're right. I can't go there yet with the Dolphins because I still think the bills are superior to the Dolphins. But I totally agree with what you're saying here. If the bills laying egg tonight and the chief smack him around, then back to back weeks when they had to rise to the challenge of the contenders of the A F. C. If the Bills aren't competitive, and either one of those, you'd have to really wonder if they deserve to be the conversation with the other big boys of the A, F. C Interesting, interesting match tonight. Big win by the Steelers, their dominant in their win over the Browns. And as Daniel reminds me, the Browns did host a playoff game in 94 in the wild card round. That's absolutely right. I should have remembered that That was when the Patriots and Bill par cells went toe old Cleveland Municipal State even took on Bella check as the head coach. All of the Browns. It was the parcels Belichick playoff game, and I had forgotten this was wild card around because back then Wild cards could host a playoff game. All the division winners went right to the division around the waiters, the wildcard fed into the division around Nowadays you're wild cards. We're always on the road because they open up at division winners. Well, there was only three division winners who left home for one wild card, the best host, so there's still a division winner playing wild card weekend at home. It was two division winners got two by the third best division winner was the three seed, The four seed was the top remaining wild card. No, I think you're wrong. I think that there were three division winners. They all hosted division round weekend the wildcard winner fed into the best division winner. And divisional round. You're telling me there was six games and divisional weekend? Not for that does no no, No, They're wass. Well, once, but I find there's only one There was only two wild card automated and the winner of that fed into One of the divisional round winners. Okay. I have to look that up because you said that you're saying that there would only be two divisions per conference, Not three. That's not right. No. There were three divisions and all the three division winners fed into the divisional round. None of them played wild card weekend. Okay, Let's talk about this. The brick. I don't think that makes any sense because that would make six divisional round games. No because to division winners could play in the divisional round. Right. OK, so you're all right. So you're saying that there were three buys per conference? Correct. I'm more confused than ever. When we come back When we come back, we will clarify the playoff structure of 27 years ago. Just so we're all on the same page how the NFL playoffs worked in 1994. And then we will get to stun to a news Next D a CVS sports radio. "Dynamically may be built a little bit different thaty Eddie motions mindset. Could Inspire this team to do some things that we didn't think were possible. I think Lebron James and I mean this in every anyway possible positive is a guy that loves to tap into. His emotions loves to use emotion to galvanize the team and push team forward and I think Lebron is someone who authentically cares about. And so I think that the pain of Kobe's death and thinking about his own family his own kids and like Damn Damn Kobe's I think he's going to authentically and positively embraced this opportunity to honor Kobe Bryant and go look Lebron said after passing Kobe. Bryant's like the stars are aligned. It's here in Philly and Blah. He connected all those dots and now I think he's GonNa connect the dots light. I have an opportunity to put a bigger spotlight on Mamba Mentality and if all season Caesar and it may have started out as just a way to be counter co Y but it's turned into something real about load man and so so he was already in that lane of Mambo mentality every game every and it may have been just a juxtapose contradict Kawai Leonard but it was real and I just think enter GonNa lean further into that and I'll say this about parental death or death of a loved one when it's in a team environment like Jim said it's the whole team but it's also winning a city environment this city loss and we're down here in Miami but we know what's going on in La. This city's on fire for Kobe everywhere. Everywhere these Lakers players go. They're going to hear from Kobe Man. We've got to do it for Kobe. We've got to do it for Kobe. It's like being a penn state whenever we are and we you gotTa do it for x y and Z things galvanize. I'm sure teams at Ohio State and I think it's going to have a very positive. How's it impact? I think it's going to give Frank Vogel Rob Pelinka Jeanie Buss a very easy message. Hey everybody from the people selling peanuts to the people selling tickets a man are we meeting code standard are we are we. Are we doing our job with a mob albumin talapity that message. Resonate the rest of the year yet but still what you just said and not to be too cynical but no please the love of Kobe. Allow allow you to create a story that will change your perception and make you conflate coincidence for correlation. It could be a coincidence. The Lakers championship this year. They were GonNa win it whether Kobe passes or not. But we will say now. There's a correlation. There was a direct effect because of Are Story that we're going to ply and map onto this team because at this situation so as the coach in me would say unless you were giving less. That's how can you give more so everyone goes around with the proverbial one hundred ten percent. I'm not a believer. I am not a believer. You if you guys were fully motivated needed before then you but if you weren't now who is that on the team that can have impact. Who is the BRA is a not to my standard not to is? They look fully motivated. Engaged swatted the best team right now in. NBA By record. That's both made great points but to add to what we're saying. I think Kobe. Bryant has the persona even in death maybe more so in-depth to become transcend being a a human it now turns into a symbol. I think when you're talking about Mama mentality it was already becoming a symbol while Ali was there. Right Mamba Tally. I mean everybody's talking about the Mamba Academy Mama this Mama that now you're talking about something we're talking talking about the season. No this may become something that is part of the fabric of what the Lakers organization is it could become a part of the fabric of what basketball represents moving forward because it becomes symbolic. It's not about it. Being remembrance of person it becomes more than that it becomes something thing that you draw into with a much deeper meaning than just a person yet but before we get to Darnell I grew up where Nipsy hustles from the house. So it's from the same set right around St got killed right around the street rod ro. Everyone was affected to the point. Same story symbol. The committee go change. Everyone's going to be givers. You know what guess what peace treaty shoot at his procession point. Is I understand what we all are.

"As the journalists we root for storyline. And I think this would be a tremendous story line and I think the emotion of this city is going to help propel the Lakers. The rest of the season season agree with you in the sense of it would be amazing story line. But I don't think this will inspire them and I don't think that this is going to fully translate when you talk about aspiration being aspired that is capturing emotions and those emotions are now. I'm going to challenge you to be greater than yourself but those emotions will subside. This is gonNA sound a little heartless but it's coming deep from my pain pain in my heart. I lost my mother. Two Thousand and five now the deepest losses you can have is the one who gave you've you gave life to and those who gave you life well. My mother passed every millisecond. I thought about my my mom would admit to me. And my world my life every needs frame of my life my mom some house so way apart and then there became a distance in no seconds. Whatever a minute or so and I didn't think about my mom then it was like Oh our so surrounded by my mom to hill in a grieving process understands that even though you're still under the love and influence the inspiration because those distances between those moments were really upset you starts to change how you go about your work everywhere you go there? You are a man. I don't think that this is going to have that impact. Because I tell you this I thought the world was going to be effective when my mom passed I nearly early thought the next day was not gonNA come or at least be cloudy. Range something. show-me universe world got that you felt that as well know what the next day was waking up six in the morning sunny blue skies the world keeps turning. I don't think he's going to have the inspirational. Say In this tragic Egypt cataclysmic happening when you look at what Kobe Bryant has represented and now what he'll represent and death I think it it will have a tremendous motivating factor on the team. And I think one thing to to add to what you were saying fans are not only going to want to see the the Lakers when this now gives Lebron any type of ails that have maybe followed. Lebron maybe you know part the Lakers picking him up. He can use this as a uniting factor so to speak he can take what has now happen and and almost take the torch take the mantle and further. What his legend is based off of the tragedy of up maybe one of the greatest legends to to ever Don a Lakers uniform? So I think the not only be motivated but they have a tremendous opportunity entity to open themselves up to a larger market of fans and actually create a a unified front. Where you're saying you know what? I was rooting against the Lakers. I wanted the clippers the when I wanted this team to win but now I'm looking at what took place and it is an amazing opportunity within tragedy agitate turn.

"Only athlete in my book that would ever be comparable to Michael Jordan. And when I think of Michael Jordan I think Kobe Bryant. And it's almost anonymous to me the the the phrase or the meaning that takes place for me as brilliance and excellence and motion and that's to me the legacy that I will always take away from what Kobe Bryant was able to give us on the basketball court was Brilliance and excellence in motion beauty from pure basketball perspective Kobe. We had the unfortunate being at the talent of the Jordan era and then once the brawn came in so he was caught in between he was that bridge in between two so when people look and analyze his career when comparing the greatest excuse me they would often leave Kobe. Kobe name out of it because of that because Tim Duncan happened to be in that era as well so you'd never really fully appreciate it his greatness because you were too busy comparative to Mike on the back end the Bron- on the front end and Tim Duncan in the middle. Who's the best but yet and still what you couldn't deny or compare was what he stood for as a basketball claire the relentless pursuit of perfection? which you can't get but what you can get in between? There is the opportunity to give you and your teammates the ability to celebrate greatness in a championship form. He wanted to do that he wanted to do that. Without check. It was a purpose. He was purpose is driven. When you look at the conic basketball players and where you stand in history it's funny Jason Journalists you cover a certain time period in certain athletes are there for you to admire but also for you to break down and evaluate those? Are The people that you see. Who's going to write the story? Fifteen twenty years from now. Is that the people that covered Michael Jordan. The people that cover colby or Lebron. Because that's that's a moving scale okay to wear the greatness Lod but when you put his career on part and parcel with the great yes sometimes. We text each other talk to. My mother is shouldn't have to take a death like this for us to do that. But in life it does. And it's unfortunate my relationship with Koby in any way beyond the reporters in two thousand fourteen. Kobe sits and things about trayvon. Okay by Martin didn't sit right with me and I criticized him and the next thing. I know Kobe was texting me. And it started a conversation between us over the the next couple of months and the entire conversation in two thousand fourteen was about his vision for what he wanted to do for young people and so last week and I'm a longtime critic of COQ. Everybody knows it but last week was in my heart bit at what Kobe was telling in two thousand fourteen. He's actually doing in his post career and it hit me last week like I love what do represents and so we talked about it on this show Joe about him being a role model and he said some things that we all thought were a little goofy about WNBA players. But I interpreted that just do loves his daughter so much much. You Jose goofy that's a representation of his love and so for two or three days later for this this to happen when I just was really having an appreciation for cold. We can't wait to see what he does. And this next chapter for him and to be gone it just feels like a great loss for. I hate to frame it. Just wait because Kobe was bigger than just being about race but just for black people. I feel like it's a loss else. Man Losing his duke and it doesn't add up and I think that's what really disturbs me. Because we all have the currency of the three t's he's time talent treasure all of us possess them and for him to be so great at basketball. Isn't that talent to get all of those treasures to lose the time. What is family the time? Ford that the expectation of see you later will never be realised think about it from their talent and treasure that give themselves more time the ultimate currency. Kobe lost it. And that's what's so so disturbing is because I'm not lying. I only play sports to help all all of my family. I only do that. All up in the air and watch them pup corn cicilline rocks. Hit me in the face from age. Seven all the way through pain surgery repaint surgery. Because I know is going to enhance my experience and my family's dynamic and I did it because I want to pay it forward and now of the father of four kids and then you lose everything you work for you work for accolade worked for just to get the check and other people who revere you can get buckets. You did it because that that was going to be able to materialize in two or greater existence and now he can't even be a part of it the biggest reason it also hits home and it's not just us. It's everybody that has kids and it's played sports. You want your kids to come up behind you and play sports and if you didn't would make you want him to be better than you were and if you did make it you WanNa make it to your level and be better than you and we've all whether it's on an airplane or car drive we've all been in the car with our kids going to practice going to games. Maybe not a helicopter. But we've all traveled that road so we've got to get up early early in the morning and go. Oh Man. The weather's terrible we still gotta go. We can't miss this etiquette. And we've aw gone through this and so it hits home because everybody can relate to this when when you have a child that has played for me my oldest one. She started playing my wife's like which one you take it. It doesn't matter I'll take you can take Kennedy. But then when I became Kennedy's culture it was. I have to take her in for me after this. I'M GONNA say it takes them so tragedy. I'm going to change. I'm going. I want my son to be able to me and Marcellus was talking about this on the way here. I don't show emotion when my son cries them. What you shut up? No I want him to be because if I could cry in front of you guys to me. That's a bigger sign of strength. Me Trying to be faked tough and not cry. Sign of weakness is so I WANNA show my son tragic things like this.

"Of the countdown. The Steelers called and said, we'll make the deal. Let's get off. The twenty nine in the two thousand nineteen NFL draft. The Seattle Seahawks. L J Collier. TCU? So another defensive end goes off the board to replace Frank Clark who was traded to Kansas City, but back to the trade Mace that allow the Broncos today, and we'll get reaction to call your here in a minute. But the Steelers obviously had targeted Devin Bush. The Broncos were ready to take a player could very well have been Devon Bush, and they make the deal, which I thought was a terrific trade. It was great value. The Broncos definitely got more back then they gave up. I I was hoping they would get a twenty twenty first round pick that wasn't in the cards. But this was still excellent value at that spot, and you get a player that was high on your board. And look the Broncos they like Devin Bush an awful lot. I think they would have been very comfortable taking Devon Bush a right there at number ten but also Vic Fangio don't forget. Let's rewind the clock back to the league meetings last month in Arizona, and he did say that Devon white and Devin Bush. Were not of the caliber of inside linebacker that roquan Smith who they pick for the Chicago Bears was back last year. I think some thought oh is he making a smokescreen is that I mind trick. Yeah. Turned out that it was right on for him picky.

"Mean, I think the salary came out and it gets like one and a half one point three point four. It's a double pay. It's the biggest salaries probably ever had. And so he's all in. The Buckeye now. No, you're right. Maybe maybe one day. We'll be we'll be good friends again. But not now. Jim Harbaugh said, you know, we think about him, but we're not going to send him a Christmas card. Right, right. You can't do that. So that's a cost of doing business. It's just weird because I saw all the former players and some of the summit even the current players respond on on that Twitter and couldn't believe that. They were seeing that. Yemen, that's coaching. I think that that's that's the profession in this serious selling one thing one minute. And then ten seconds later. I've always been amazed by Jamie. How these guys moved all these jobs sale this stuff, and then they go to another place. And it's like what you could set over here is not like you're acting like it never happened. So this just like, I don't know twelve saying just poking it's out works. So that's always hit close to home for me hits close to home looking like, wow. Just just supply was such a weird irony. That's why I think it was a savvy move in some ways by Ryan day. You can't convince me that it wasn't totally inspired by urban Meyer. To do it. Because every Myron Greg Madison had been close friends forever. And he knew that it would damage Michigan's recruiting in Ohio, it would rile people up, and it would be just another whatever. I mean, you know, Greg. Medicines are good football coach. But there was no market for Greg Madison as expensive coordinator at a million and a half dollars, whatever. There was no market for that. They just did it to do it because they knew how it would look. That's exactly why they did it. He's a good coach something wrong. But it was a lot to it. Will you be? Will you be at the practice tomorrow? No, I haven't I have to help me this weekend. We'll be at the screen game though. But we'll have somebody at breakfast. I won't be there. What will you be looking for at the spring game? Obviously the offense. The just the just to see what the what the flow looks like I think, and you're not gonna get a good look because a lot of guys are hurting. They're not gonna play. I would think and they're not going to have a full game. It will just be kind of a practice. Yeah. Maybe to see what the energy levels like, you know, and and things of that nature and how quarterbacks are throwing the ball. And then, you know, defensively, I suppose, you know, maybe how some of the stuff shuffled its way out of this offensive line. You know, some of those guys because there's. On the defensive line right now with in terms of proven depth. So you know, they said a lot of good things about Donovan jeeter guy like that. You know, that's fine. But, you know, see, you know, see what he does, you know, because remember the one year twenty seventeen they said a lot of great things about Devin Bush, and it was like, okay. You know that school? You know, you keep saying that he's just you know, force and all these things, but you know, that we watch spring game. He has like eight sacks. Okay. Now, get it. Right. He's legit. I mean, it makes sense. But then they over the years I've done this many guys what they say he's going to be a difference maker. He's going to be a difference maker. And then he's not. And so you know, guys like that. It's time to see what they can do. Guy would say with some of those guys because you know, Aubry comments another guy that were maybe expecting to fill in corner. Spot a lot of guys that they are replacing some of those big names like Rashawn Gary in Devon Bush, and you know, there at least older players players that have been in the system for a few years. You know, we'll see maybe when Dax hill comes in a little bit later that changes things. But does it give you a little bit more confidence with some of those guys that they are not just fresh faces guys that have been around the program for a few years. Yeah. I think I heard about is to that. And I think that it gives you a better chance because I think what he was alluding to is that you've got guys like Donovan, cedar like angry Thomas who it's now or never now, you know, it's time to go. It's not, you know, they're not they're not young players anymore. And you know, Jamie, you know, this you don't get three chances to be a starter. You don't get multiple opportunities to to earn your spot, you sometimes it's just one you get one chance and. It randomly comes along at a Springer fall when somebody graduates, and then all of a sudden it's there, and you don't know what time that'll be your what will happen. But if you don't take advantage of it, you're probably never gonna get it without some help. So, you know, for those guys this is like this is their chance. And this is this is the one the one time for some of them. It's like if you can't do it. Now when you were third year player, you're probably gonna get past. And so I think that's that's why I think you feel good about where they were at mentally because instead of destroying a freshman in there and saying we're just gonna see I guess you have these guys who were second year players third fourth your players now getting a chance to that. They've been waiting for. And you know, now, we're gonna see, and that's a and let everything sort of self out. But that's probably it's much better than having to put twenty seventeen whenever it's throwing first and second year players hoping. I mean, this is this is that you may look at it doesn't hurt that you have in certain positions. Have a couple of new coaches that gives you fresh life that coaches have it. Settled in their mind that okay? I mean, you got a brand new offense coordinator. Yes. Guys on film. But I mean, that's a new fresh set is the guys that may think they get an opportunity. Maybe they've improved right? Yeah. Yeah. And that's that's helpful. I'm sure, you know, at every spot where you got guys that maybe they don't get maybe they see things differently. But you know, but I always go back when you played there was one. There was a time in your career where it was where you look at the roster. You look at the desert, and you said, this is my chance to do this. And if I don't do it somebody's gonna pass if I don't do it right now, I'm getting past, and that's a real thing and guys still talk about that a lot. But for some it's sometimes it happens when they're really young. And sometimes it happens in their second or third year. And I think there's a lot of guys right now. There that spot if you could test play younger guy, you're never getting that back.

"Not a problem. I wouldn't sweat it at all thirty four was a big deal. I don't know if you've got a chance to peek at his pro day clip, someone of it kind of made his way to Twitter, but they showed him doing. Db drew where he's flipping and turn it easy. He like a safety. Yeah. He looked like a safety. And so the name of the game now at linebacker the off ball linebackers have to be tremendous athletes that can hit running cover what I like about Devin Bush Devon Bush's ineffective. Blitzer six X coming off the second level, you know, who else had a ton of sex Darius Leonard. So one thing that we know is the league as a copycat league. When people scour through the tape, and they see that this guy should have been defensive rookie year or he did Wendy has rookie year should have been a pro bowler. And you looking at Deir slender have seven or eight sacks from the second level who would allow him back in this class can give me that kind of production. Devin Bush has to be a name my fascination with Devon white centers around not only to Sal on the silent ability, but the leadership skills so much playing deposition traffic cop is being able to direct and organiz traffic. Get everyone lined up in the right spot. He can do that great leader gr. Right worker. Terrific athlete. You talk about the instincts. I think he is instinctive maybe not as instinctive as Bush, but the plays that he makes an in space. He he reels running backs down does a great job Kuranda. And I didn't see a guy that missed a lot of tacos. In for me. Got it. I want in the pipes in between the hashes is someone that is a sure solid. Tackling also has some thump. Do you think that playing on the same team as Jamal Adams helped him from a leadership standpoint since Jamal is considered universally one of the great leaders? He is I think so, but I think sometimes you have that. And I know that he has talked about Linda for net being a positive influence in Linda for net, helping him learn how to work and take them under took him under his wing when he first got to LSU. I think there's a tremendous sense of pride at LSU with with those guys. And I think for Devon white. If you ask anybody do he was kinda deploy. Piper. And when you get multiple guys from multiple classes say that Devon white was unquestioned leader that defense speaks volumes about what he may bring to the table leadership is something that Clemson had. I thought it was pretty cool that at the at the combine you you got to catch up in separate separate appearances with their defensive line excited to have two of clemson's fund is Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence. Joining the move the sticks Bach ass. You guys are coming from a very successful program having been couple national titles. One claim Clemson trophies. How is that experience at Clemson prepared? You have success at next level. While felt like, you know, we'll just I on foremost, just you know, the way Clemson help grimace as men, first and foremost and just as people for like, that's the most important thing. Definitely. And you know. Yeah. It was the program the coaches and guys and everybody involved and the people just around the facility, but the players really I thought we challenge each other a lot off the filters to be the best people. We can be I. Then the best athletes is well, I just feel like all the lessons learned just you know, going against the best every day in practice. You know, I feel like not like anything I ever saw in a game in college was never better than what I saw in practice. So I definitely felt like unprepared on the football side of things, you know, decided just decided to see why I ended up and just know how this process will play on thing. I'm definitely ready for the next level. I mean, just a pig about where he said I mean going to Clemson. I mean, that's the kind of things you expect to happen. You know, the girl is a man as a football player, and you know, just having that kind of support around you just to help you, you know, to guide you you're not holding your hand..

"When a specific member of the Michigan alumni base came back and spoke to your team, Devon. It was it was completely different. You know, when we're in Brady walks to them, you know, he was just like, you know, everybody watches, everyone, watches, Missy and everybody that came through here. They MSCI they cut a Michigan and they follow Michigan forever. So you not only plan for today. Your plan for the guys in the past the guys in the suture. Well, Devon, I do deserve this. I don't blame you for bringing up Brady's name. But I was the one who spoke the week before. Brady Devon to your team. You did definitely. No, we all are. Understandable. It's totally understandable should've brought my name up. I deserve that. Yeah. You. No, you don't come on. Now. It's okay. If outside outside, that's right. Came. We were probably on the twenty yard line on on the on the closest to that the grass field. It's also my fault for being sandwiched between jeeter and Charles Woodson. And and Brady. Jevon timing everything in live. Oh my gosh. I walked right into that one. What what happened at Michigan state this year? Devon, walk me through everything that led to you stop in on the on the Spartan logo on the field. What in the world happened in east Lansing? It was just like obviously for me. It was already kind of a lot of tension there in you know, ages came in and they locked arm to cross the whole field. And you know, I'm out there. One up in a couple of the guys out that women up. We gotta headphones on not not really aware what's going on. But no soon enough. We find me look back in you know, the whole Michigan state team. They're walking three-hole field. What their arms lot? And you know, was like the matter of disrespect to to the team. You know, they try to walk through a whole warm-up. You know, Walk through the whole. the whole field and and keep their arms. They never made a way for us to get through their little line, whatever they do. So I mean, that's kinda would take everything off. And then they came. They went to the far side deal down the huddle came back rank through. I want began you know, bumping and talking. So that's what that whole being came up. So it was a dishes speckled thing and got like, so you know, I wasn't trying to go out there and fight before the game. Because that's you know, I wouldn't be able to pay probably been suspended or whatever. So the next thing in my is expensive and logo. I mean, you did scratch it up. They had a spray painted and everything. And you know, we're watching right now you need to be held back. And all that did you see was was the coach of Michigan state was was dantonio smiling. Mike for like XP moment. And then after that you kinda like been, but I did the AM I data. say, I don't want to relitigate. Well, actually, I do want to relitigate this. I do you know, I wouldn't mind, but my doing all of that what you asked about this at the combine that moment at all was brought up to you. Probably probably four times. And what do you think they were trying to determine from you? If you were hot head or something like that. What do you say I everybody, Nobody really? really wants. I think that's when it really was like, yeah. Maybe we don't see these high story behind you. Because I mean, we there's anything like that before. I guess they wanna just to figure out what really happened in my. So you just went through. Did we just recreate the combine right there? What what did you tell people? Gave up. Okay. Who did you speak to the Combi walk me through that? Acquired a number of people. I probably I can't like rip above my head. But I probably would say most of them. I probably like four or five teams. So you know, he said he was sitting there watching them use ours screaming he's staring at is cream trip in down the cone. And you know, he's probably because he didn't give in to get an ice cream. "Eight four four zero four rich is the number to dial about four downs segment right here on the show based on on free agency. Here patriots just are keeping on keeping on Chris. Their their word is maybe golden Tate. Yeah. They started started talking to him. They resigned Philip door set. So they they're doing the, right. Standing horse stand that ever Super Bowl team. Trae flowers is a big departure as his Trent Brown. Again. It's going to be those spots they fill look last year wringing your hands over eight solar Trent Brown. So don't think anyone envision. Wind him turning into the type of player he turned into. But it was awesome. When he became stood. So you can't sit here and say, well, this is a major void that can't be filled with the guy that everybody thought was the guy. It went Matt light Nate solar and now Trent Brown. And now the last thing you do want to have is a revolving door at the position to protect your now. Forty two year old would be nice to have a guy. You know, you're gonna have for right five. And then we will. What's what other what holes? Do they have if they wide receiver for sure? Well, they did you see that. They put some form of a tender on. Josh, gordon. The doors open think he might be back next year. Well, or they're just projecting. Just right and keeping them on their radar screen. The right now, the only wide receivers under contract are Philip door set and joined element. Matthew Slater is primarily a special teams. And so again, this is this is the conversation that we have here in front of us with Antonio Brown being paid what he's being paid. And what Dell Beckham is being paid and Albert is on an hour. Number three tweeted out a list of the top receivers on the last ten Super Bowl winners. And none of them are guys who make twenty million dollars a year and the patriots view that position and the running back position as totally fungible. The tight end position as one that. They were the first one let's get to let you know. I know we don't talk about Aaron Hernandez and football terms for great reasons. But it was Aaron Hernandez was a great player and gronk. And so everyone's like, okay, two tight ends. Now. We're seeing that's everywhere. Now in this copycat league. The patriots seem to be a year or two ahead of these major trends helps to have the goat back. They're not. Everyone's got it. Okay. And the saints have won and they just restructured. Drew Brees is contract to allow for more cap space in the idea would be for who could it be to keep Bridgewater in the fold? Because teddy Bridgewater you set a meeting with Miami last night. Yes. So there's all of that. That's the way New England goes about their business. They'll just find the trae flowers will draft another one or they'll figure something out and as long as there's the hoodie, and as long as there's TB twelve it's great to be in that neighborhood, which is why I guess bill's going swimming. Looks like coming out of the ocean going swimming getting ready for the free agents friends. There was no frenzy. They're not. Just lounging on this boat. I'll tell you, whereas if there's a frenzy, and it's a New York City about giants fans who are for Rican out right now. And that's part of my four downs here on the rich Eisen show. Downs with rich. Why did you? Okay. Gary is on it. There's del tufo Zain Dallas doing that that boxing match with those guys know Anya Gerry's in del tufo sees got it working. There you go. That's a great drop. Right. Their way to coke Gary. Okay. I down right here. I'm biased. I'm totally biased because I'm rooting for him. But you have to an end. I would I would criticise when it's critical when it's reasonably critical, and he would totally expect it, but I'm gonna praise it when it's deserved the first two months for Mike Mayock as general manager for the Oakland Raiders is just going fantastically. Well, what do I mean by that look Antonio Brown? Now, a lot of people thinking that it's great negotiator..

"See you. I'm doing. Well. Thank you. I I got through the day yesterday. Three hours hours at the NFL had the most viral moments. Let's put it that way. Yeah, we'll get. We'll get to that later on that was apparently on Ohio call us for four to four ritual. We'll discuss all statues going up right now. I think bakers adele's. Go up, Freddie. Your your fourth or LeBron's? If six well-done vers, okay, lots going on in this world. So I should I should I should learn to stick with my October thirtieth self what do I mean by that not just that? I'm getting ready for my for my my Halloween, costume, get ready to trick or treat but his on that day. I did get that day. Correct. October thirtieth two thousand eighteen correct. I handed out the Larry Francis O'Brien trophy to the Golden State Warriors. And the rest of the regular season had some ups and downs. They lost seven games in November, including the moment here in Los Angeles. Where Durant and and drain on went at it. And and they barked at each other and drain on gotta a one game team suspension, and that was born out of in a way barking at Durant about the impending July first free agency. And and then they get boogie cousins back healthy and they start dominating again. But then came this last week, the Celtics and the warriors their worst home loss of the Steve Kerr era, and then the Suns beat them the Suns beat them, and in that process boogie cousins was being the word liability was being thrown around. I guess the word liability has been attached to both Gordon Hayward and DeMarcus. As both of them are still trying to get off of catastrophic leg related injuries to get back to their previous all star selves get their conditioning their game worthiness. Ready? Back to back to normal. And so we're all wondering how in the world. They're going go in Houston, which is lost. Only once in the second half of the season year in Los Angeles to the Lakers game where they blew it. And we all remember Chris Paul talking about how there's I don't know if Scott foster done at other rockets game since then it'll be interesting to look into that the referee who the rockets accused of being biased. And they've they've lost since that one day nine straight Durant. Her last night did not play warriors come up with a win. Whereas the w. Durant hurt. Boogie cousins his best game as a warrior twenty seven point season, high seven assists season-high couple of steals as well. Crucial block shot early on in the game Klay ads thirty Steph curry twenty four even though he was three for nine from three point range. There you have there. You have come out with the one possession win last night. One of six one zero four and here comes Goldstein again. Now Denver's right behind him game and half. I understand. And what do we learn from this? What do we learn from this because it's the only warriors win against the rockets this year and all four games that they play against each other this year. What was the first week of being an NFL head coach like for you? I'll tell you. We spent the first week just trying to get our stuff together. Which is I think the most important part of being a head coach, especially for the first time. It was a good people. Good coaches and good teachers. So that's what we've been trying to do. I know you're looking for a good teacher because you've talked about yourself, and I'll get to that in a minute. I gotta be honest. I'm not supposed to play favorites. They don't pay me to cheer or pick. But I've taken a liking to you. Because of a lot of things that you say, you said something that I thought was outstanding you said, quote Cleveland, and I get along. Well, it's a great statement. What is it about you in that city that makes it such a good fit? It's just simply Jim one of the things is, you know, I grew up down the street from a steel mill and I saw the smoke stack in the white smoke billowing out of it every day of my life. You know, growing up and almost moved to Akron. My dad worked for Goodyear Tire and rubber company and almost moved to Akron or one of those times he was laid off. And you know, so just I don't know just the environment. They the community here is just a lot. Like, I grew up in just hardworking people that just trying to get better. Freddie kitchens. Joining us. Glad you mentioned your dad. He mentioned that he was a tiremaker Goodyear Tire and rubber plant in Gadsden, Alabama. You also referenced did Benjamin he may said that those who start behind the game in life must run faster to catch up, and I feel like I've been running fast. My whole life are mentioned that again. Because Freddie, a lot of people in your situation seems to me might feel like they started behind and they can't catch up. You didn't catch up? You ran by everybody. How do you? Explain it word that motivation and that drive come from. Well, thank you know, a lot of it has to do with the chance to you know, and the opportunity and things like that. You never know when your opportunity is gonna come under no circumstances. I ever want the opportunity to come the way it did. But you know, you've gotta make the most of any opportunity get and I try to do that. But the kicker to that is you have to be ready and prepared for it when you get it because you don't ever know when it's gonna come. You know? So that's the way. It went kicker was Freddie, that maybe it wasn't gonna come. You referenced this awesome the presser, but after your playing career at Alabama, and you were in Tuscaloosa, you were selling cars, you were doing really well making a lot of money, and then on top of that you had a side hustle going on you were washing FedEx trucks on the weekend. And you would listen to Alabama football on the radio to the point. Where nearly brought tears. I mean, what were those days like in? When did you first make the decision, I'm doing fine? But I've got to be back in football. Football's part of my life. Really it just came about a guy by the name. Rick Trickett was offense line coach at Auburn Terry about and just gotten fired, and I was sitting at home watching the news and saw where he got the job. And I was like, you know, what I'm gonna give coach in a world. And I did I loved it. And you know, like, I said the other day, it, it never was the fact I wanted to be a football coach is just I couldn't live without the game of football. I was just just an empty filling. You know inside. You know, I think some players and coaches when they retire. They have that feeling it's not necessarily the the game is to build and and thing if the locker room is is the essence of everything. Freddie kitchens. My guests. He's head coach of the Cleveland Browns. C start coaching at division to Glenville state in Glenville, West Virginia. What were those days like? Still to this day. I don't know if I've had as much fun coaching in my life. You know, one red light and the county couple of restaurants picked up rocks on the field before you started practice. So no one got hurt. You know, it was the it was the mecca of college football at the time for me. So it was great made a lot of great people. And again work for Rick Trickett, which I also followed LSU after that for coach saving some of the guys you mentioned also, gene stallings semester Croome Woody McCorvey. The these are the types of guys did showed you the game of football. They showed you that. It's more than just the Xs and os. What did you learn from them about being a coach? Well, that's exactly right. I mean, I mean, this is a people business, Jim and anybody that thinks anywhere any different. They're wrong. You know, you have to find what makes players tick to do that. You've got an find what makes the person tick. And that's what you know. I've always tried to do you've got to build relationships. You gotta her and trust and respect trust and respect. Somebody the cornerstone of everything we do here and to get that trust and respect. Now, you've got to be able to have tough communications where people at times and talk about topics that players and people don't want to talk about. And so to do those that requires the trust you earn trust. But getting to know the person, you know, and get dough person you've gotta talk to him about more than just the power. You know, you gotta talk to him about them and about their lives and their families, and and what's important to them. Everybody's got something important to them. You got to figure out what it is. Freddie kitchens. Joining us. So this is why. The word that keeps coming up. We'll be able to scribe you is authentic. So how important is that as a head coach? I mean you play the game. So you know, how important is is a head coach the players know that you are authentic. Not that kind of bull crap we pretend to be authentic, but you are authentic and the connection is real. Well, I don't know what the, you know, Jim. Honestly, I don't know what the big deal is about that. I thought that's what you were supposed to be as a person and as a coach and anything you do. I don't I don't see the big deal in that. I didn't learn any other way other than the be authentic. And you know, I don't know how to go about things any differently. That's great no extra credit for doing. What you're supposed to do. No extra credit for being authentic. So that's amazing. Isn't it? Kitchens by guest. Now, the you and Baker Mayfield did was really amazing in the sense that it wasn't just amazing was unprecedented. Given that you took over season had explained the fact that the two of you're able to get on the same page so quickly and be as productive as you were. So quickly. Well, again, I think it started with trust, you know, for someone to trust you, they have to know that you have their best interest in mind. And once they know that then they know you're not gonna be somewhere anything from standpoint of doing something that maybe affects you a little more than them. I mean at the end of the day the game of football, sometimes coaches forget that the game of football is played by the players. It's not about the coaches. So everything you do is gonna impact the player either negatively or positively, and hopefully, we're doing it more positively around here than anything else. All right. So as one quarterback looking at another quarterback when you look at Baker Mayfield. What do you see what makes him so unique? It's all the intangibles. You know, everything you look at the kid, and he's not supposed to be as good as he is. And it's all the intangibles. And that's the things you can't judge. There's been plenty of guys that's come through the league, and even in college, and you Salman high school ball all over the place that have tremendous. Talent. And the thing that separates those guys are the intangibles to toughness, the competitiveness the work ethic. All the little things that you can't judge by going to combine pretty kitchens, my guess from the moment, or so I wanna ask you about something to happen in two thousand thirteen when you were with the cardinals and one day, you were feeling dizzy the story goes to Carson Palmer, and she was Stanton called the trainers over and you were taken to the ER. It was discovered that you had a tear in your order. What do you remember about that day and the impact it had on you and your family? Well, I really remember everything about it. It was just kind of a weird experience, you know, knowing that what could happen. You know, you're laying in a situation like the gym. And you don't really I know me personally. I don't think you ever you're not thinking about the things you regret doing you're more. So thinking about the things that you regret not doing. And and what I got out of that situation. More than anything was how may have meant what I meant to other people. And you know, ever since that day, you know, I don't think you wanna go to bed at night. Or are. You know, you never know you never know when the last time you're all see someone else they need to know how you feel about them. And they need to know, you know, they're gonna know you well enough you're having that conversation again with so make sure they know how you feel about Browns head coach pretty kitchens, my guest. So everybody got chance to see what the Browns offense, look like under you, what does that entire Browns team going to look like under, Freddie kitchens? What do you want people to think of when they think of the Cleveland Browns going forward? Well, hopefully, we go out and play with a lot of passion and energy toughness. Those are things that require no ability whatsoever. And then we'll take we'll try to take. Everybody's skill set. So what they do. Well, and and do that I thought that was part of coaching. But you know, and that's all we did in the second half a season was do those things, and you know, it work. But again, it it all goes back to the player the player has to be willing to accept teaching except learning except work and stuff that it takes to put into just to get to the game on Sunday. And then you have to be able to perform and everything always goes back to the player. We're just the mechanism of delivering the the mains to get it done. He's coach in the NFL for the past thirteen seasons. Now, get stop pretending to be a head coach with the Cleveland Browns. Mike guest. Freddie kitchens, Freddie. I know you get a lot of requests a lot of media requests. I really appreciate you saying yes to this one great to have you on this show and really nice to talk to you. Freddie. Yes. Are you to take care of yourself you to coach great talking to you? You take care of yourself. I appreciate you. Freddie kitchens. I appreciate the hell out of him. I did before the conversation. And now even more. Browns fans, you've got to feel good about that. You have to like what you hear? That's America's team. And that is America's coach, right? They're they're coming off a seven eight one season. He made really clear it's nothing to be happy about as something to be excited about we have a plan. We're headed in the right direction. But we need to be better than seven eight and one in notice us dot he not only was he not was the moment not bigger than him. He he didn't seem to understand what the big deal was about any of that love the answer about. I'm not really sure why everybody's making a big deal out of me being quote authentic thought we were all supposed to be authentic. Isn't that the way we're supposed to be honest authentic straight up treat, others the way you want to be treated shoot straight love it..
