Having the Last Word
"I am about to or I am going to die either expression is correct. These were the last words of seventeenth century, French, Jesuit, priest grammarian, and man after my own Heart Dominique Boehner. Narrowly, edged out by eighteenth century French Aristocrat who declared I see you have made three spelling mistakes. As. He read over his own death warrant. We assign a lot of significance to last words hoping that we'll leave some deep philosophical epitaph or something funny like what's this button do? But you may end up with last words like American author, Henry David Thoreau who simply said Moose. Indian. My Name's Moxy and this is your brain on facts. Many people think Irish playwright and poet Oscar Wilde's last words were either this wallpaper goes or I do. That would be typical wild but there are two small factual inaccuracies in this retelling. The actual quote is this wallpaper and I are a duel to the death either it goes or I do. And he said that a few weeks before he died. Oscar Wilde's actual last words were a mumbled prayer. He did also say toward the end of his life as he lay in bed sipping champagne I am dying beyond my means. How To Eat Like A Pro
"We all know that regulates `collectivities important part of staying healthy. But whether you're an avid gym, go all prefer occasional workouts I would diet can have a huge impact on goals and the physical development. This week's food for thought nutritious Daniel Davey and I explore the latest research sports nutrition and how by adapting the way in which we fuel ourselves disc be such a game changer and our performance skill and recovery had lay Donyo. For me it's an accident pleasure I've been wanting to bt for quite some time and about this topic and I think now thanks to lockdown actually we we've managed to to make this work. Haven't we? Some of the positives of covert here precisely, and let's start the conversation by discussing the biggest mistakes that you find people make when it comes to fueling S. Yeah I think the most obvious one is this. We tend to be really good at planning our training and knowing this Tuesday Thursday is Dan. Saturday are the days we're going to be running are going to be in the gym bus I. Don't think we pay the same type of attention to our planning our nutrition are fueling I. Think the biggest mistake on C. is is where people don't actually understand I need to align my energy and let's say my feeling are my carbohydrate needs to those days. So doing the same thing, every day is just not going to get you where you want to go. Said Korea. I think we don't prioritise on nutrition in that way tool, which is why we're having this discussion today because food is few and we need to probably expand I suppose where we're actual energy comes from. Yes. So energy can predominantly comb from carbohydrates as a source of energy. Joran exercise particularly as the intensity of that exercise increases our demand for field our demand for energy increases. So at rest were used predominantly free fatty acids are fat as a source of fuel bus for athletes or people who are exercising. You know it could be a team sport athletes could be someone on their bike at the weekends. The energy is coming mainly from carbohydrates and that's stored at stored form of carbohydrates is glycogen storage in in your muscles and liver. And when we begin to exercise could be broken down into glucose as a source of fuel for our muscles night often try. If I'm giving a talker explaining, I was used the kind of phrase of imagine an invisible. Being surrounding your entire body shape full of glycogen. It's almost like invisible energy isn't it power that's waiting to be waiting to be released? It does come from cops and it's crazy brady UAE cops the food group. We'll give you a pretty bad rap in the media as a quite a long time. I think people are now starting to realize that. Carbohydrates on top league quite the devil but. There's a lot of talk about energy and energy out as well. What do you force around this? Hub, I, suppose it. I go back to maybe some of my experience working with Elise athletes and you talk about energy in energy out I, think that there's There's a real misunderstanding about how critical it is to meet our energy levels and I know there's a lot of research on on relative energy efficiency that sweet we see in female athletes I. Think there's again maybe a lot of the information that's present in the media and social media has led to confusion boast. That fear of fuelling and that fear of getting enough energy and that actually have serious consequences for for general health but also a risk for injury our risk for illness things like that. So it's a far bigger thing than just not having energy for for exercise. If we do it over prolonged period of time, there are some pretty serious
Interview with Crime Writer Tom Vater: S. 6, Ep. 7 - burst 1
"My assumption is that you started with journalism in went into crime writing, but that beaker. Well actually. So happened hand in hand because. The first Arctic rival road for newspaper wasn't one, thousand, nine, hundred, Ninety, seven. A paper in in Nepal and while I was there. I started thinking about rising my first novel, the Devil's Road to cap on do which then eventually came out in two thousand four. So it kind of happened at the same time but. But I I would say that you know between the pieces of fiction I right there along gaps for professional reasons and so Leap. Most of the time I have a day job. I do journalism and when I have some months often I can sit down and write a novel. So you're primarily a journalist who also does crime rate. Yeah you could say that I also own a a small publishing. House. crimewave press, which is a crime fiction imprint based in Hong Kong, which does mostly e books published about thirty two titles by. All sorts of oldest many of them from the US. So that's that's my Gig. So I, I kind of do three different things. I'm a crime fiction writer I I'm a very small press publisher with just one Papa and For crime, fiction novels in a bunch of short stories. And interested in the fact that you do so much stuff Most interested in in in the notion of of journalists going into this sort of thing because it tradition of journalists going into to fiction writing is historically something I've always been kind of intrigued by which is why I majored in journalism actually because of my interest in writing and in fiction general What made you choose crime fiction in particular as genre. There's probably several things. One is Zora fiction kind of makes it easy to because it's got many established rules and tropes and. Conventions and and so in that sense, it's it's quite conservative. You as a writer, there's another things to hold onto when you're writing your first novel because it has to go away. If you're GONNA follow crime fiction conventions if you write literary fiction, it's it seems at least to me when I was in my twenties, it seemed much disorienting and I didn't know how Radia how I would do that character development always stuff. But in in crime fiction, you know you have set in stock characters and set. Ways the plots develop and and and end in the end. So so I felt seventy with my best novel, the Devil's role to Kathmandu that I wanted to just ride to a sort of. Conventional Adventure story you know with. it's it's the story of four young guys who in nineteen, seventy five hit the hippie trail between between London Kathmandu and drive a van from London to come do an on the way they they. They make a drug deal that goes horribly wrong. And Is Disappears with the money. Mail saying how? Do and get your shouts the money. So that it's it's like a classic kind of adventure story that I wanted to create an I just how that. All Crime Fiction Travel Zara which would be the easiest way of turning that into a reality.
Arizona Cardinals will have 750 friends and family at Sunday’s game
"Is going to look a little different up to 750 friends and family of the team will be in the stands as sort of a test run for the organization's Corona virus protocols. Did you hear this? When team President Michael Bidwell joined the show earlier this morning? That's going to be almost old school high school football where the only people in the stands or your your family and close friends, You know, I think there's a right way to do it because we we want to be able to test Our fan health and safety protocols. That's a pretty cool way to test fans in the stands. Yeah, and unfortunately, it's gonna look like the old Cardinals at Sun Devil Stadium with about 750 fans in the stands, So there had this happen before. What I like about this is a testing the protocol when they're going to put fans back in there, but also giving the players the tickets. As a motivator, because now they will be playing in front of the people that are closest to him. I think it's kind of cool.

IMPRESARIO, peaches, Christ chats with us about opening up her vaults of drag parodies for an incident viewing party of her show. Rowling and other high profile celebrities come out against trans. Inclusion eighties gay icons that became TV commercials, spokespersons and look at the amazing life of Drag Queen Hegi leg. I'm Fausto for no I'm Mark Zalin and this is feast. Five. Before we begin. Let's listen to the trailer for a peaches crisis the witches of East Spe starring Coca, Peru Chad Michaels and Thomas Dekker. You know when you're young queen and you don't understand anything everything's really confusing. CONTOURING and Tucking. You think that when you grow up and become a seasoned queen, that's GonNa make sense and. Still waiting for that day. That day ever come I've discovered that when you're truly fully relaxed, you can open your eyes and see what the world has in store for you. For me, my eyes are most open after I've enjoyed a hot steaming cup of celestial seasonings tension Tamer to. What do you? It's a short life isn't it? We all have fears. Sometimes I i. look in the Mirror and I see everything disintegrating faster and faster. A long career in drag is not for the week. Just burned my mouth. So fucking badly you know life may be short for some. But even if there's like a nuclear Holocaust, I plan on sticking around and partying with the cockroaches not really afraid of death that doesn't mean I don't have fears. You know what I see see snakes like hundreds of them and they're like crawling all over me and then disappear I'm just not there anymore it's really trippy. I don't mind the growing old or that it's a short lifer, the snakes or any of that the the pain that scares me I don't know why there needs to be so much pain in the world often caused by anonymous trolls commenting on social media. Deal the deck. Down here we just. Play the sandwiches. Hello. Hi. Peaches. Christ. Yes it is. What's Your scariest movie? Nights scariest. Say, what's your favorite scary movie. Well that's a nightmare on ELM street. One. I had a really scary movie. It's called the Selfie on my phone. On my God and I take my clothes off and I look into it. And I see myself growing old OH. Oh I used to be an atheist, but then I realized I was a sex God. But now on a sex card decline and nobody wants to worship at my temple. Because I've been stuck at home during covert quarantine. No one loves me anymore, not even myself. How are you doing today peaches? I I was doing fine a moment ago. I. Just I don't even know what was. Not sure. Well, we're kind of like thinking about you you have. Your opening your your default. Clearing the COBWEBS and showing the audiences, what they are throughout the world with really want is some of your productions that you've done over the years you during the witches of East Bay which. You know play on the witches of Eastwick, which kind of deals with. Women of a certain age and how they feel. That that's what you doing. Accuser. So used to hear that all the time this leg. I thought that you were just like you know any the the average gay guy going through his. You know mid life crisis. Interesting thing right. 'cause we live in a consumer society and we sort of been making money or being taught or whatever to not embrace aging and to look at the aging palace as something to be feared. Sometimes. Abhorred emphasis on the. When. You're eighteen. They'll tell you when you're over twenty six nobody wants you then you need S. Over thirty nobody wants you then your early thirties forties death if you're gay and then this comes you know the goal and then you get those ages and you're just like I'm just as fierce as I was back then. Yeah I mean in some in some ways. I would argue that maybe you're fiercer. I think that well, culturally right it's it's not in every culture. Is there sort of this idea of growing old being a bad thing, but it's definitely an American idea for sure or Western young and then I think if you are queer especially a gay man, you know we we adopted so many of the worst parts of. Misogyny. And so we apply that to each other and then I i. Yeah. I think for a lot of queer men sadly. It's a real thing. It's a real problem. Well, it even like in talking about intergenerational relationships or even like you know if you are somebody who is above the age of thirty and you're at a bar and you start flirting with somebody, you know this is the thing is like a lot of these twenty year old tw- inks are hit me on the hookup APPs but out in public, there are like there goes all thousand. And I met you were sending me or Dick Pic last week are you talking to your little secrets? We go out in public. Worrying a mask. Anymore. I'm really loving the mask culture because finally. People to see my face and they can. Say. They just don't even see it. Well, it's like it's like a facelift in sunway tooth kissing goodbye nobody knew. What you're doing you're you're giving into those those ideas of you know this negative ideas about aging. This is about like you know for years we've heard Middle Eastern women. I really like hiding my face and feels very comfortable. People are after. Them they not to stare at me Yes yes. Yes. We're the mask sunglasses like ray bans with mirrors on them and sometimes even a little bike helmet or a hat. So I'm basically just a robot out perfect on everybody just staring at you know staring at anything I want without repercussions about like when you're like totally like staring at a guy is like in you're wearing the mask he can't see when you like licking your lips underneath the mash. Literally drooling once in a while might might mask. The wetness comes through but. Like little, otherwise they how do they know and this is a this is good for straight men to know this like when you're not when you're a straight guy and you think you're too cool for the mask, all of us gaze wearing masks we're just. Per serving on you so hard. With that information. Jim and I see this guy and I'm just like Oh my God he's so bad. He's just like. A moment your way and I'm just like, yes. In the way my heart. Yeah it's true. You're right. You're right. That we should we should probably get back to the which is. How generous of you? To open the show with such such an amazing plug for this upcoming online screening that we're doing, and it's true that that show in a way was about I mean I talked to cocoa and chat about the fact that we were. Older Queens and that that's what the show was going to be about. So you're right. That is what the show is about. It's about is this all there is kind of thing but he ever since I've known Coco Cocos characters been this cool hip tell it like it is. You know Aunty in the Bronx who's like doesn't Old Lady for thirty years and this is why we called got dress up in drag I. think at least for me when I was in my early twenties, it was like, Hey, you can be whoever you want to be for the rest of your life as long as you can get a shake and go wig like Coca Peru and. They'll make it. How did you get cocoa to like actually change wigs because you know she's wearing Like she has. A demented Jan Brady. I guess I get you. We this was the first show. We've ever done together and we had been. In some comedy shows together doing drag Queens of comedy and she passing Lee said like, why haven't you ever asked me to be in one of your shows and I was like Well I mean you never I I I just can't imagine

No Weapon Formed Against You Shall Prosper
"Isaiah chapter fifty, four verse seventeen. Actually. One morning when I was doing my walking God kept putting this on my heart. You wouldn't think get a whole four part series out of one scripture but praise God we did. No weapon but no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper. And every tongue. Horizon Gainst you in judgment. You shall show to be in the wrong this piece righteousness security and triumph over opposition is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, those and whom the ideal servant of the Lord. Is reproduced now we're gonNA take this scripture apart this weekend and We're going to do four different teachings from Liz. Each one will be different. A separate message in its own. But I want to start by just say a few things about this scripture. No weapon that's formed against you shall prosper every tongue that rises up against you in judgment which none of us enjoy that dewey nobody likes being judged or criticized. Is showed to be in the wrong but on the practical side for Christians Life, how do we show those who judge and criticize us that they're wrong? Do we ourselves. Do we. Get Mad at them and say equally bad things about them. Now none of that works does it You know the Bible says that when Jesus was insulted, he didn't offer insult and return. When he was abused he didn't abuse in return, but he trusted himself and everything to him who judges fairly. So the bottom line is the way that we show those who judge and criticize us that they're wrong about us. is to behave in a godly way. Instead of letting the devil did through them caused us to act like him. I must say that again. What we're so tempted to do is We're not gonNA talk to me like that. If you think you're going, do that then I'm going to do this to you I'm GonNa. Cut you out of my life. I'm going to tell everybody what you did to me. Well, we're doing when we do that is. First of all, we don't war with human beings. The Bible tells us that that our war is not with flesh and blood, but with principalities and powers of wickedness in high places. Now, that doesn't relieve people any of us of our responsibility to not let the enemy work through us, but the bottom line is, is all evil everywhere in the world all bad things that happen. The source of those is. An entity that the Bible calls the Devil Satan, the evil one, the deceiver, the wicked one on and on and on. We don't like to talk about the devil who likes to talk about the devil but the sad thing is in some churches because talking about the devils a little unpleasant, they talk about the devil and I was in a charge for a Lotta years and went on a regular basis and I never even realized that the devil was real. I thought he was some kind of Halloween character put on. Red Suit carried a pitchfork and had a long tail and that was the devil I mean, I, knew that there was a devil but I didn't know that he could be our was a real problem in my life and so the first thing you WanNa do when somebody judges and criticises you is pray for them. Because they need an understanding a revelation of how dangerous it is to judge and criticize other people, which is a very dangerous thing to do I know none of you do it. So I don't need stop and have a sermon about that right here. But I'm just throwing it out there. It's a very dangerous thing to do because the Bible says that the way you judge others you'll be judged in the same white, the white you criticize others you'll be criticized in the same way. So always remember that if you want. The, benefits of this scripture to work for you see a lot of times we read a scripture and we wanna take the benefits. But we don't want to do the part. That we need to do to have those benefits. You know we have. We have a bad habit of just picking parts out of. Well, no weapon formed against me shall prosper the Bible says that. The devils under my feet. He's defeated no weapon formed get. You shall prosper every tongue that rises against you judgment. You shall show it to be in the wrong but the way you do it is by behaving in a godly way. So they can't find fault with you. Rather than leading what the enemies doing through them cause you to turn around and act just like the enemy to
Biden's Agenda for the Latino Community with Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia
"I'm Jim Taylor skinner, and this is the electorate. On this episode I have a conversation with representatives, Sylvia Garcia of Texas twenty ninth congressional. District. Discussed Biden's agenda for the Latino community and what we can expect from Bein Harris Administration including their plans to address income and healthcare disparities and the disproportionate impact of Kobe purpose. Of course, also addresses those criticisms of the campaign around whether their outreach to the Latino community is enough. So here is my conversation with representative Sylvia Garcia. Purpose Garcia. Welcome to the PODCAST. Well. Thank you for having me. If I I want to talk about the Biden Campaign I. Guess these are criticisms not doing enough to connect with the Latino community, and if you think that that assessment is fair or do you think that there's more work to do there? Were you know I think people are just so excited about the Joe Vying Kamala Harris. Ticket that everybody wants some light right there now in their neighborhood at knocking at their door, I mean, they're that excited about this ticket that I think there's some folks who who just feel like until they go come to their neighborhood, it's just not happening but but I know I serve on the National Latino. Council. For by now early supporter I know that from day one joe by his been reaching out to Latinos but I know that we can always do better. Anything that we could do to make sure that we reach more. Latino voters. Not Just in Florida not just in Texas not just in California. New York Arizona. New Mexico but everywhere across the country because if you look at any state these days we have Latinos everywhere we have them in Hawaii. We have him in Alaska. So I think what matters is knowing that that he has started his spanish-language press he started making sure that we we air as much as possible. Eh, he's gotten. The Latino Leadership Councils now in several states, I know I'm working on building up in in Texas because he wants to make sure that he touches the Latino community in especially also is Dr. Biden I think Dr Binding early on recognized Latino vote was and more importantly how important Bill Latino vote was that I know that she had a virtual event with with the would we call the commoditised synagogue Nestle. Which is Debbie Powell from Florida. Veronica, grammar from from Texas and myself were all three Judiciary Committee and people here called on ESCO mothers did judiciary it stock and Jill heard about it and wanted to do an event with us and we did, and now we're going to launch a commodity to commodity campaign to make sure that we impress all our voters that we got to vote until one mother to another. To remind work in our own mother network to make sure that we come out and vote to make sure that we make the change that's needed at the White House. So I'm excited. So one of the things I've found really impressive about Biden's response to that specific criticism is that he wasn't defensive and I think you know right before he visited Florida reporter asked him about. Whether there wasn't enough outreach to the Latino community and buying said something like you know I'm going to work like the devil to make sure that I listen and their vote. So he was open to the idea that there was room for improvement and I think both by an Harris are both consistent in responding without being defensive you know and they bring people to the table. There's a lot of work to do and I think we can always do better and I can tell you Scott along with surrogate were willing to do that. He's he's got a lot of people on the ground. Excited to do that. I mean I can tell you a story Saturday I. Don't do too many in person events, but they wanted me to go to a phone bank and I was assured that were social distance everybody's a math. And I went and the minute I walked in it was about Sylvia Joe Sylvia Joe. Any they know the job blindness running. They're excited because. It hurts them to see a White House that is about hurting people for us in. Texas. It's about what we've seen him doing at the border, but it's also seeing that they're not getting more help and more relief on for everybody on unemployment. It's also about what he's doing to Medicare and social security because that hurts our relief does on our lead us. So people know and they know the to make the change that we need they're going to have to get there in those phones. And? Of, course, the member of Congress I've First Ladies First. So that became their chance. Soviet Joe and I told him I said well, it's not just a joe as it Soviet Joe more contests. So I left him with at Madeira. Very excited. You're making calls and Were Spanish language of phone calls to low propensity Latino voters in Harris County

"Netflix, now available for streaming the devil All the time is an ensemble crime drama Little film Noir ish with a bit of the grizzly to it, And it kind of recalls the cone brothers in their blood. And his dogged by tragedy that's almost biblical, and that that carries over to others whose lives were connected in the story, By the way, the role played by Holland. Yes, Spider Man himself. It's his closest you get to a heroic lead in the movie, and this British actor is pretty convincing as a young American from that part of the country. It's like he was bit by a radioactive hillbilly. I mean, really Totally thrilled with Tom Holland. Where can we watch this? The devil all the time? Yeah, it's good stuff. Plants Engineered to Remove Indoor Air Toxins
"Welcome to the talking biotech podcast. It's Wiki podcast about agriculture and medicine with him emphasis on biotechnology and the good things we can do for people and the planet. My Name's Kevin fulltime professor and. Science. Communicator. Worries about your understanding about science and about some of the major issues which new technologies can play an important role and today we're going to revisit a episode. We did last year, we're speaking with Dr Stewart, Strand from the University of Washington civil and Environmental Engineering Program, and we're going to re-explore his air purifying plants. So there's been some developments over the last year or so that are really important. So welcome back to the PODCAST. Dr Strand. Thank you. Yeah. It's really nice that you're back because this was an intriguing topic to me. And maybe we need to start fresh for listeners. But back in twenty nineteen, you talked about plants that could remove impurities from indoor air. and. Why do you think that this is necessary and is it really a problem? Yes, it really is a problem Our homes are contaminated with gashes. Chemicals such as Benzine and Formaldehyde. ACURA. Lead chloroform is president are indoor air, and these are all either proven or probable human carcinogens. So these are important even at very low levels that they occur in the hall mainly because our most vulnerable populations, children, and older people as well. spend all their time in the home and are exposed to these chemicals continuously. Okay where do they come from? Well busy comes from fuel storage in attached garages. Lawn more fuel gasoline contains a lot of busy and can get out of the tank even with voters car Benzine also comes from outdoors. It also comes from cigarette smoking or any kind of smoking and the home. Sometimes, Campbell's can emit. And It's approved human carcinogen chloroform an interesting one with chlorinated municipal water performance farm from the chlorination process and reactions with trace organic compounds, maybe water and that chloroform which is a probable human carcinogen. Is a mid into the air when you use hot water in the hold like showering or or washing of. Procedures Machines admit chloroform into the air FORMALDEHYDE. A lot of people are familiar with that. It comes out of the glues we used in pressboard carpets and so I'm but it also comes from things like smoking and cooking. In the home too so that at that's hard to avoid. And do you think that our big push to have more energy efficient homes? You know we're we're getting double pane windows and really good insulation around our doors and thresholds that don't leak is this just exacerbated the problem? A yes. It has as well recognized to be a part of the problem of that. Don't have as much Eric's change in a lot of the homes. That we that have been retrofitted with installation. That we should have there should be frequent air exchanges in the home and. Even. Those though will Lee some of these residual gaseous compounds. Okay. So we have this problem of at least some level of. Volatile compounds that are present inside of our indoor air that may be there exceedingly small amounts, but still represent some finite risk and. Now, you have a solution to help clean those out a just with plants that have been specifically engineered to deal with those chemistries. So remind me again about the first invention which was both those eighty what what is that in? How does it work? Well Pathos Ivy. The last name is the criminal Maurya around the trunk as tropical plant. Many people have it in their homes. It's also called Devil's Ivy in some places And it is very common house plant very easy to grow It doesn't flour in the home So it's a less of a bio safety risk in the ecology and. It is a house plant that is rare in the fact that it has been genetically modified.
Apple Updates App Store Review Guidelines
"Let's talk a little more about apple updating its APP store rules to explicitly allow game streaming services. You know things like, Google, stadio Microsoft's project x cloud. Each game offered on the service just needs to be downloadable separately from the APP store. And every game update must be submitted to apple before it can stream to users. In other words, there can't be one APP that just streams the collection of games there has to be a collection of APPS for streaming each game, and then they can have a catalog APP that can link out to each game out. So let's say Google media has one hundred games they. Would need to have a hundred APPs one for each game and then a stadia catalog APP that would link out to those other APPS and don't forget services must also offer the option to pay for subscriptions with apples in purchases, which, of course gives thirty percent to apple. The game services also must offer apple sign in which is derived you're now on the APP STORE Apple also updated rules so that one to one fitness or tutoring classes do not have to be billed through the APP store one too many fitness classes do that addresses a facebook events issue and another formal exception has been made for free. APPs acting as standalone companions to a web based tool this addresses, the problem the hey, email service had if this had been the rule, then hey, wouldn't have had any problem. So that's a good one. The one to one fitness will help those people on making use the facebook events. Billing but. I don't know rob that that. Allowing streaming services doesn't seem like it's allow a lot of streaming services. It says though they don't want streaming services on. These devices because the couple have dozens if not hundreds of abstract going to go through all, that is just there's you know what is the reward for doing that amount of work for giving up thirty percent of your take? So I I, just don't see that happening I. Mean I guess you could. Just, to play devil's advocate, you can automate that every APP would be essentially the same APP providing access to the streaming service limited to to one game. Once you get the first one up, it's not that hard to do but you're right. It's extra work that you don't need to do. It's more things that can go wrong and it's really not what the service is supposed to be. The services supposed to be I access the service through my browser or an APP not there's a bunch of APPs that access as a streaming game service. If. It feels like a very apple compromise with itself not an apple compromise for the services. Absolutely.
Interview With Brandon Thibodeaux
"If you've been working through through through this time, you know at the beginning of covid. Tanit I thought this is the end of my career I don't know what's going to happen and I was I was busier than not have been since moving to Houston relatively speaking within a two month period and I'd say just within the past two months or so the trailed off where the too dismal. It hasn't been this slow for me since since I started no four freelancing. So yeah. This this period of time has been definitely one of reflection of sandwich which way the whales can we go from here? Yeah. Some people that I've talked to they seem to be starting to work again. At everything is still kind of tentative. When you think about all the liability like I? Had A job today in got one tomorrow, which has been rare in the past couple months him back to back but. You know the corporate liability. If you go on assignment with the Wall Street Journal in, you haven't already done this they they require you to do a zoom meeting with. Their security staff to go over P em, proper. Omaha. For caring for yourself the photograph in. There's hazard pays with a lot of publications right now if you have to go indoors or do anything risky, but it seems like it's maybe starting to trickle back. But there was there was a period where like I said we were in Mississippi for two months at my in laws my wife works from home and we stayed with her her mom Milton Mississippi. Mainly because I had no reason to be back in Houston. Yeah a mowed grass. Farmer. John honey days keeping productive. Absolutely. It's A. Devil's. Workshop. Where were you shooting for yourself much or you were there a little they reside in another part of the state from where a photograph traditionally in this. By with this new body of work of. Starting to break the seal on Louisiana there about an hour or so from that region and. I took some time to go at all around there and if nothing else discount to new locations. So yeah where we even again to go out there. Sunday. I'll. I'll do a bit more that one of the things I wanted to ask you yesterday because you're you're you're born and bred Texas, right? But you photographed for a while in Mississippi and I've never really lived in the south I visited there and I was kind of curious to hear about how different is the culture between Texas and and Mississippi? United their side a long standing debate of whether or not to include Texas in the South A. Really is it's own thing in even more. So now that I think half of California's moving here. Certainly rise in the resume rent rates in Austin. You know it's it's a remember the New York Times, the one little anecdote for the new. York Times had this article about language and the idiosyncrasies of people, speech and terms the terminology based on on regional identity. And funny. My area of southeast Texas Beaumont author all the words ad say. Feeder road for access road or you know or I forget what some of them were all mine lined up almost exactly with my wife's region of Mississippi there might have been a few things off like we say aunt instead of anti or something like that. On. So I always found that a little maybe that was meant to be wishy enough spoke the same language or something.
"devils" Discussed on Ologies
"Now, what about field season like Wednesfield season for you when it's like mating season also, let's talk about their little face tumor yet. Yeah. I I didn't even know that was the thing. Yeah. Yes. So I'm GonNa take up right now. My work is dead space space. I'm doing some modeling of the facial Schumer and stuff but if you're talking about the devil that breeding about. stations about. Twenty one or quick fifty one days. It's one of those is one of those numbers that ended one. Something twenty two. I don't know it's very different office but okay I looked and for twenty one days, they cook indoors before crawling out of her gene and then dodging her late munchies and beating dozens of siblings to make it to a t, and then they say round with bomb until about like summertime here. So like November. December. So they cigarette bump for quite a long time. Really. While they growing the pouch obviously than kind of learning how to be a devil. And so by December, they overlay trying to find their own homes. So devils. Territorial. They also let go. So then up territorial in the way that you might think of a lion being territorial all like. I duNNo. Even. A coal territorial they do use latrine so though I got old poop in the same place, they'll communicate by anagram secretions said they have little like a little dog they have glands on the side of the ball moles and when they move they, they kind of secrete a substance that kind of communicates different olfactory cues, mates around but they don't have like territorial territory boundaries, but they do like being kind of an era in space. In December little dudes, kind of walking around. Trying to find that right homes and that's kind of. It's kind of. Not, Opportunity is good for them, but there's a lot of food around an easy food a lot of things at dying as well. Luckily, they getting. Dying. So it's kind of easy private those a lot of people in the roads because some everyone's going out to shack so to the beach the Bush So we got a lot of devils dying on the roads young devils, which is a shame because they haven't got a chance to stop breeding they haven't got the chance to survive the facial she yet. So we use a lot of. Devils young devils every every summer because they move around dusk and dawn, and it's hard to see because a jet black. Basically, you know Lisa little white shopping bomb little white shop on their chest. So it's really hard to see them and if you're kind of doing a hundred, K's our down the highway and Lou devils facing on a dead Wallaby in the middle of the road GonNa. See Time So. That's like a big push to of slowdown dusk-to-dawn because it's unnecessary death comedy afford it at this point we lose. Yeah. Some devils to he's a Segue to the facial trauma Mitch. So. It's it's called Tasmanian Devil Facial Chamber. Disease DFT TD? Came it was I I ended up in a place called around to in nineteen, ninety, six and. It's one of only two mammalian traditional cancers. The other one is a really old dog peanuts cancer. Did you expect to hear the stack of words? Really old dog penis cancer served up interiors like a club Sandwich today? No no you didn't, and if you're a dog with a Dick and you get canine venereal transmissible tumor, how do you deal with it while according to the paper diseases and surgery of the Canine Penis a Dog Dick Dr would. Recommend partial or complete penile amputation depending on the tumor type and location. So aren't you? Glad you're not a dog so is everyone except maybe Tasmanian devils what we think happened is hostile but we think happened is a female devil up in the northeast of the State got cancer and through their behavior and also the legit diversity is being spread throughout the state. So airtight behavior, they are quite gentle with people that could be shocking stuff up. Amongst themselves they they are quite grumpy have really good. I signed they mostly use a smell and the hearing long whiskers to navigate the landscape, and also that there's not much carrying there's not much food to eat. Really I mean, it's mostly roadkill things will die. You know naturally dead sheep field something generally not about food around. So they all have to kind of share and everybody solitary like sharing being forced now more than ever. Especially, as humans encroach on habitat more more than push together. Eat together. and. So when the eating, they're all kind of their kind of going a bit crazy they're getting a big If you walk into your favorite restaurant sorbet play Pasta I haven't eaten a days and he just crying. Racing towards all your friends I haven't eaten for days do and it's all your favorite meal. And also rising towards grumpy natural. I'd go. I would find the pasta. Yeah Pasta. Absolutely. So, especially, when you're like I, made it to a teeth I'm GonNa make. My over eating by my mom. I think I need to eat this. Are we talking about Oh yeah. Okay. Fleshy cancer knobs that kind looked like you skinned a plum and it boards way through their cheeks eventually killing them and breaking my heart a Thousand Times over Aka Tasmanian Devil facial tumor disease, which let's be honest should be called TDF TD, but it's none of my business anyway they get by with each other because of these long brunch lines and also because they get horny and if they get too close look at this, they the naturally kind of by each. On the face. But what that means is probably what this female she had this cancer she bent on the devil on the face and in the castle transmitted through that public because at quite closely genetically to each other quite a few bottlenecks even prior to invasion climate change you know over the Millennia has made them shrinking, growing, shrinking grows and then obviously. Post invasion. That was a lot of bounties out on their heads like has many targets because of the myth that initially. Hundred sheet and they growing steadily since then until the nineties they've declined quite rapidly with this. Chuma but. The interesting thing about it is it's a carnal sell so I WANNA say he I'm not cancer research on just ecologist. There's a lot of research bed I'm not privy to but from what I know it. When you biopsy the cancer cells, it's got the female devil Fussy Mount Devil sales in the devil host cells. So okay. Yeah and then wow. So this. This read is. Kanye's only this one don't pay us one and the devil, but then it doesn't fourteen a second strain of the facial Chima showed up down in the south of the state which has mailed genetic. So to hold is almost like they've been struck by lightning twice. So they had this first one onto ninety six and at a second one budged and that two different trains you could tell because of DNA of each of the strains..

"Can you imagine you're just born you take a wrong turn you wind up at your mom's Butthole, and she. relatable but you Know it's so. It's such a hard life being like daimler quote like if you saw on the wrong foot, like your whole life is. Really Hogs Yeah they all deserve book deals now. They're carnivores, and so you think like a mom she's got a nurse these things. So she needs me now do they do they go straight from the teat to eating like insects worms like what happened? So it's it's different for devils they'll be stuck on a long time. With, the takes pills in their mouth when they get stuck there for a while. Ago, they opened their eyes and they kind of right around bumps back for a bit and still be suckling though at that point, but they should be trying on carrion like dead meat. scavenged mate that pretty much. Obligate today most. they don't really kind of stoop down to the level of insects like quo. Close calls mostly. Eastern quills, EA Crumley insects and stuff. But Yeah, devils are not apt hunters they got oh no, no, no no, they can't. Basically. A recent study was published about like with cameras on devils to see what they do and one devil try to eat a wallaby and the wall of Galway and that just stood there growling angrily huffing and like getting upset with itself. Can you imagine that? Can you imagine? If you go to the fridge. For the third time, there's nothing there's nothing that you wanNA eight years standing grumpy. kind of what it was doing. Okay side if you're like me and you struggle to form mental pictures of southern hemispheric marsupials that frankly sound fictitious a wallaby is about ten pounds and kangaroo looking it's a little smaller than a Tasmanian devil but their macro pods, which means that they have big feet and apparently taxis. Can't even eat this if it's still alive. PS kind of leggings Tasmanian devils have so. They got their back legs like a on the way they walk. They've got like being long back legs they cobble. So they can run pretty fast up to twenty five as an hour but they kind of they could've wobble more than run in away. Okay, so I look this up, and if a Tasmanian Devil were chasing you to try to beat your ass, you'd need at least an electric scooter to get away. So Gt K. good to know and they really dislike scavenges. So they'll eat the road kill. When the time of the policy was alive would like eight remained that kills button in the absence say mostly lower rogue pill. That is pretty it's a pretty chill law for a devil baby because you mom was rock up. So just smell like a dead wallaby on the road to kind of pull off the side will start eating together squad family affair in that way. Now, if if there is a marsupial that's been roadkill is that you should try to check it to see if there's any booze and the baby's should. Always. It's almost like a second row of passage. Isn't Australian I think you have you checked the pouch often the POW shelby. A little Pinky, which is like a believe. Little. Baby Kelly. Sought to the teat it's hard to raise such small babies. It can be done with the carriers but. In in lots of cases of beer at Joey, just sitting buying mom mowing the bush yet. But the other thing is 'cause devils they are engaged but from facial cancer. But also from road kill like around four hundred devil's diary on the road because they scavenge off road kill and so it's really important that if anyone. Anyone. Listening to this drag the kit. The road. So devils don't get hit by cars accidentally. Okay Tasmania maybe keep some Taco tongs in your trunk and just do a little good Samaritan carcass dragging from now and again, but stay safely. Now M has mentioned facial tumors a few times don't worry. We're going to get into what the hell is happening with these taffy tumors in a bit and Tasmanian devils only in Tasmania Korea so they used to be on the mainland Australia but they haven't been in for about four thousand, three, thousand years. It's unknown why not there but that ended up timeframe coincides with dingoes kind of made their way to Australia and Dingoes quite avid hunters that was no land bridge that has minute that time. So that would have been. Yeah. They would have just kind of slowly gone extinct on the mainland. Yeah, and now what about the wall which by the way I thought it I was a up, which is a different thing by the by. So quotas are those pe listerine cute little critters who are related to wallabies but they look like a mix between a hamster and Tom Hanks and as it turns out are not flesh shredders. Aquatic. Isn't. horrify. Evil clown kind of away like sweet and cute, and then just blood. Aquatic In Aqel, Dif- different. So what is a call? So quo is So, there's a couple of different types in Taza. We have spun detail quos and eastern quos, and they like the just like devils like but they they're actually psychotic when he catch a quote in a track, you a lucky to will go with your face still intact from that encounter they really quite. They're quite like manic animals. And they're quite different to dentals able actively hunt. basically then like big cats, we call them native cats actually occasionally big cats big long tails. And spots all over them. has like spots on their tails and the eastern coal has no spots on that tails. They're kind of have little mousy faces and like the Tiniest Little Pink knows that you just WanNa boop. If boop, you ever want to be able to speak again. So he doesn't have to resist so much to not be. Like are so quos have more of A. Temperament that we have thought was belonging to Tasmanian Devil Yeah Oh yeah that's completely flipped like yeah. Devils at the chill chill dude didn't like the kind of like really. Aggressive cousins that just really don't want to be around you. Can you. Please It's really strange but like a nice things are. Quite, big, but they cannot they. They weigh about three to four kilos a mental that big I think really quite lot but they can be kind of quite long but they can hunt things like. Fourteen to eighteen kilos like I have I'm once I was sitting by a river and just like watching a planet was something and this detail goal just like jump to next to me had a positive now the whole possum. Like these things out that big but they could bring down like massive pray and it's just incredible what they can do. I know devils are really kind of thought as the APEX I would I would put my money on the fact that you know spun across motions the legwork down he types of like actually actively hunting in killing things. That story. The only way that story could get more June like if you're drinking a fall. On My Bless deciding talk about fusses. Sitting at a river watching a platypus. And then a call hawks by with. Doesn't it yeah yeah yeah. And then it can gory punched me. Corolla. Accent. Anything. Amazing. Oh. My God I need to figure out what kind of FEARS PEOPLE DRINK DOWN THERE All research that's like it's like four x a low end. Price but there's like. A little crafty down yet impressive. Really I was honestly when I was. A teenager that was like one buffalo that you could get like one type of via from, and now there's like croppies everywhere three changed landscape. Let me tell you. Have like artisanal venture might. COME BACK and. There was like Manuka Huntington. I don't know man I'm not. I don't know I don't WanNa. Hey, on like growth but I feel like that's a bit weird anyway. ps if you ever want to seem like a Tassie local order a boat folks if you're in the north and cascade beer in the south and bonus cascades have a Tasmanian Tiger on the label, which is now extinct because of colonization, which is like a stage for bummer. Oh, yeah, I've been there. We used to go swimming up. There used to be, I think, for many years, a big swimming hall like at the falls right below the devil's kettle because there's a nice pool of water. Dusty told me that going up, everybody was aware of the devil's kettle and the fact that it mysteriously swallowed up the water that flowed into it. But with typical midwestern pragmatism, she told me folks didn't spend a lot of time worrying about a hole in the ground. Wow. Like I said earlier, there really hasn't been that much set about it. Waiting to see if they would resurface downstream. They never did. There actually were quite a few. There were stories at people had put die into it and had never seen the died. That's Jeff green from the Minnesota department of natural resources. We'll hear more from him later, but he shared some of the tales of citizens scientists trying to figure out the mystery of the devil's kettle. I think I read somewhere line that there was not that this happened, but that there was a rumor that someone shoved a car in there. Yeah, that's another story that someone dropped a car into it, which I'm not quite sure how you'd get a car there. But yeah, that was one of the stories. Everything that was dropped into the maw met the same fate, it vanished. The only thing rumored to have ever resurfaced after a trip into the kettle was a person dusty again, though I did ask my mom and dad. My dad had lived here all his life as well. And he is now eighty seven. If he could recall any stories, dusty spotter recollected a story. He heard growing up about a boy from a camp set up in the woods at sei Graham Ray. In the nineteen thirties under president, Roosevelt's new deal. The government set up camps all over the country where able bodied young men could come and sign up to work for the federal government. "The is that game misconduct podcast with don leaguerecord and welcome to the friday edition of games conduct i am down the greta and we're getting to the playoffs we've got the last weekend things are still very much up for grabs you know a place you want to check out certainly not just podcast here games conduct go to the nfl network the western conference preview for them it's going to air on monday and that's going to be at six pm eastern time and then they're gonna have an eastern conference preview show on tuesday at six pm eastern time if you want for information go to nhl network dot com for the local channel listings and ken danny goes been apart of their coverage on the nhl network but looks like he's going to be busy at least for the first round doing some devil games the devils clinched their first playoff berth since twenty twelve and kenya danika of course is the color analyst along with steve cangelosi on the television network and he joins us here on the podcast today game conduct kenny how are you ma'am i'm good pretty excited for a group of guys that believed in themselves and nobody gave much of a chance back and stepdad september and understandably so but these guys you know proved a lot of doubters wrong because they they believed and they certainly earn their way in because they did not get any help around them and they should be real proud and now the fun begins the is what it's all about nanna last time they were in this position they went all the way to game six of the stanley cup final so obviously we'll see how far they can go this year but i'm sure the irony was not lost on you kenny being a longtime devil going back to nineteen eightythree just the irony of finally getting back into the playoffs with this new era of devil hockey and who do you beat last night lula morello yeah.
