"Eastern time on Saturday there before Once the show is fed out live all of our 424 affiliates across the nation. So we mentioned last hour that new travel poles were up on the website. We hope you'll check them out and vote will share the results with you next week, but we've got over seven minutes. So let's get back to some news, Mary All right. Sounds good. So I'm going to start with something that really jumped out. So American Airlines we fly American a lot. They've Historically had a really strong presence in a lot of hubs around the United States, but not so strong in the Northeast. Well, that is going to change their partnering with jet blue that was announced this week. This is going to include the New York area and Boston and customers are going to be able to use their frequent flyer rewards program on either carrier. They can book single itineraries. What do you guys think of that merge? I'm all for. I'm all for any airlines that, you know. Allow us to use other people's miles on their airline. Yeah, they're not joining their one World Alliance. That's something. For example, on the West Coast. I know American airlines is doing this with Alaska and Alaska is joining. So that's something I'd like to see. Especially because I know we have the concierge key, and it would be nice to be able to fly me. Yeah, on JetBlue. But, you know, listen, I think it's good for the airlines, and it's gonna get a squeeze for Delta. Absolutely another with a story to follow, and Alaska used to be paired with felt up in the Pacific Northwest, and they kept shooting. So now Alaska's gone over the American side. Well, absolutely there Anyone so really had anything you want throughout her? Well, yeah, we talked. I think a couple weeks ago about Pakistan Airlines to discovering that many of its pilots hadn't really passed their flying Ted by that's tests that they were either cheating on them. They had somebody else. Take the test for them, for goodness sake. Well this week, the U. S Department Transportation suspended Pakistan's Ah Authorization to operate Teo to any American destinations. So did the U. K. And so did the U. About 150 Pakistan Airlines pilots have been grounded, but some people in fact, some reports of Pakistan says money is 240 pilots where You were really qualified to be flying big commercial jets. I mean, that is what that actually really wonder again. I mean, come on, who is asleep at the switch with that one? I mean, that's a big deal. Okay? Think. Yeah. Yeah, I just said that all those percentage. I mean, I hope when there was a co pilot, one of the two in the cockpit actually knew how to fly a plane. You know what I mean, One would hope would hope but again, whatever. You know, but there's a lot of head scratchers out there. Here here something right now. So a few weeks ago, remember your You know what you're talking about The airlines. They're in the cheating. Well, remember when I brought up a few weeks ago that I didn't really understand what a pandemic time that New Jersey is raising the toll so significant on all their roadways, And this is not the time, you know, met memo to the governor of New Jersey. Not the time to be raising tolls, but that's what they're going to do. Starting in September. Another thing I saw this week. We were talking last night about cruising. Well, you know, and I just don't get this key West is looking to ban cruise ships because of the Corona virus. Obviously, clearly, they're not going right now There's a group there called Key West citizens for safer cleaner ships, and they're calling for the changes, but the reason I bring it up I don't understand it. Last year, nearly 400 cruise ships carrying over a 1,000,000 people is like 1.2 million passengers visited Key West. It is such an important Economic engine for that area, and they're already trying to recover from hurricane so if they ban that I it makes you scratch. Your butt is like the first companies have to say about that. I can't even I don't know, but I mean the crew's first of all the cruise ships aren't sailing. So how did they know whether they're gonna be cleaner? Well, there's 2021 name that they want to know if I wasn't clear on that. I probably so they're basically saying, no matter what they're not, we're still going to be worried about them, no matter what. And they just feel that they don't want the cruise ships They're using, in my opinion there, using this as an opportunity to push the agenda that they want to avoid The clearly heard about this in in Venice and so forth. Well in key West, that's kind of it's kind of, you know, a subset of the same kind of argument. Right? Right, right? Yeah. Well, Delta lost $5.7 billion in the second quarter. There's a number that's hard to get your head around. No wonder American and Delta and United all swell Americans, particularly American and United was saying there I'd be laying off literally thousands employees at the end of September if the government doesn't give more money to keep them employed. Well, that's another way to see a lot of that coming in October with if the money is art, don't continue. We have something good world travel insurance We can kind of shared with us this week. Yeah, we can all chat about this, So they have started a campaign since you know we do want to get people back travelling, but doing it safely and it's going to take some time to boost confidence and all of that. They've got a campaign going. What should you do when you travel and some of these things, my common sense for common sense. But you know what Sometimes that's often are often the very comments so Number one thing when you travel where reusable face covering. Okay, easy like washing. Sanitize your hands. Of course. That's the most important thing from every year that I've been hearing the face mask important, but the reality is touching in your hands. So it's some of these other things that I do think or even more pertinent today. Go ahead. I'll go through three through six on this, and you can also just maintain physical distance thing. I think we all want to do that. Look, you're traveling activities online or over the phone important that part right there. As much as you can do in advance. Plan your journey and download app. So therefore you minimize crowds and you could be in for middle times and really use contactless payments as much as you can to avoid kind of banknotes and coins that goes back to the sanitizing your hand, Right? Right. The other one's on here, and we have actually have a segment coming up in a few minutes about staycation and outdoor activity They're recommending when you do travel this is, you know, ticket valid of the weather right now stay outdoors as much as possible. Try walking more cycling more get you do biking trips with your family? I like on here that travel light because we were married. I doctor talked with us when we travel at times. You know, you want to be as nimble as possible. When you travel. You need certain things with you. But.

U.S. officials confident two Iranian missiles hit Ukrainian plane

"It appears now that in Ronnie and missile hit the Ukrainian airliner that went down after take off from Tehran this week all hundred and seventy six people on board died many of them Canadian citizens British Australian and and Canadian prime minister say the intelligence is pointing to Iran here's Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau the evidence indicates that the plane was shot down by an Iranian surface to air missile this may well have been an intention I want to start interjecting north them who's been following the story hijacking morning David so true though the first leader to come out and and say this definitively what what what exactly is he saying in terms of what he's seen well it wasn't specific about what evidence there is but he said that intelligence from various sources and that includes Canada's own intelligence agency indicates that the Ukrainian airliner was brought down by a surface to air missile shortly after takeoff from Toronto International Airport the US and other nations were closely monitoring around for missile launchers on the night of the crash using satellites and most likely saw the launch of an anti aircraft missile Ukrainian president Vladimir salen ski said the possibility that the plane had been hit by a missile can't be ruled out but it still hasn't been confirmed and he's asked the US and other western nations to release any evidence they have that the Ukrainian aircraft had been shut down and and of course we've seen video heard eye witnesses saying this plane was was just engulfed in flames shortly after it took off how is it run explaining this at this point well running officials came out quickly and said it was a mechanical failure and David they've stuck with that explanation since you know this was met with widespread skepticism first of all the crusher just happened there had even been an investigation in aviation analysts say a mechanical failure wouldn't have said a whole airplane on fire so quickly also this is a three year old plane but around said that the idea that it was hit by an Iranian missile was psychological warfare well a lot of questions about whether the Iranians are actually gonna allow for investigators to come in to Iran on to the crash site and what where do things stand right now all right now about forty five Ukrainian investigators are already in a run and obviously Ronnie investigators are on the ground as well late last night your own in government sent out an official notice about the crash and what that does is it triggers the involvement of other countries in the investigation and that will include the U. S. national transportation safety board as well as bowling I remember this was a Boeing aircraft but this is where it gets tricky because the US has sanctions on Iran in US law restricts any travel to around or any sharing of information in fact the NTSB cannot communicate directly with the Iranians so with the M. P. S. in NTSB or bowling representatives go to Ron will have to be okayed by the state department and or the treasury department and what about the the the black box that is always so important in in every crash like this I would never treat a black box you know the rainy and say that they'll let the U. S. on to the site but if I do you know they're saying that they will not give the U. S. a black box because they don't they don't trust what the the Americans are going to do with that frankly so there's a lot of work ahead David hi Jackie thank you reporting really appreciate it thanks David centers Jackie north and I want to turn now to someone very familiar with crash investigations like this it's Mary Schiavo she is the former inspector general of the U. S. department transportation on Skype this morning thanks for being here good good to be with you thank you I want to just pick up on on what Jackie was talking about the very end there Iran saying that if the U. S. gets this black box they they might read things into it they might interpret it differently is that how black boxes work well it can be yes it will there's couple layers here first of all when you download the black box it's very important to use a black box flammable lab that is capable of downloading the information that the boxes won't be damaged in the download in terms of damaging the information stored there on and that you do a good download that depends upon the capabilities of the lab rand hasn't been known to have such a lab that you literally can have a lab such as this you know you can buy it from contractors you can have it delivered or you could contract with Canada France Great Britain Australia they all have great labs and I'm sure would help the second part comes on the data interpretation okay Iran has said that they will make the data public now the actual voices if there are any voices on the CD are you know after that whatever happened happened usually they just do a transcript of the C. B. R. so you don't hear the person's voices you know in distress in their last moments of life but I ran a said they're going to make this all public and they're gonna posted on their public docket which is exactly how the NTSB and other aviation nations do it so at that point the world can interpret what the black boxes have determined hand that the old what what do you think we might learn that would clear this up I mean you have western officials saying this is clearly that what they see as a missile strike in a run saying that's impossible well at you know and and sadly the world has had many experiences with this most recently the shoot down of MH seventeen year over Ukraine and the way you rule out mechanical failures obviously look at the black box data the flight data recorder and see if there was nothing wrong with the plane they I'm sure they already were reviewed what's called the ACARS data the automated messages from the plane itself about for our for residue from explosives examine the pieces of the wreckage for explosive residue the signature of the missile is very different from exploding aviation fuel for example so you can tell what kind of explosion at once and the human remains will also contain or can also contain explosive residue so that you you are you convinced that there will be a moment when the world can say with with certainty that this may have been a mess on that are wrong won't be able to get away with denying it or or as you mentioned the Ukrainian press over Ukraine that this could be an open question that that we might never clear up well I think the world is going to know you know soon I think most nations will close their intelligence center satellite viewings and will make it pretty clear in the case of MH seventeen obviously were Russia to this day he denies that it was a Russian missile or that that Russians temperatures had anything to do with it and the funny thing about mo shoot down instances other than when a notable exception is when the United States shot down an Iranian a civilian jetliner by mistake United States admitted its mistake and pay damages most shoot down cases go on the record on the books forever as saying that the the entity that shot it down denies it so the world will pass judgment and will will you know the facts will will soon come out and it will seem obvious to the world but perpetrators tendon in my these things in

So we've got just a couple of weeks here to try and shore up our levee system along Missouri before that weather hits. We also have a lot of roads, the Ravs mentioned in these are roads that allow people commute some offers hepler kids can't get to school because bridges are out. So those would be the types of things are department transportation's prioritizing. Nebraska, Governor Pete Ricketts. Thank you so much for your time. And and good luck. As you as you search. Fearless. Great. Thank you very much are people resilient. We'll get through this together. This should sound familiar controversy over government officials using personal E mail accounts and messaging apps to conduct official business. This time though, the officials in question are President Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner and the president's daughter Ivanka Trump among others. The head of the house oversight committee says the lawyer for both Kushner AMI vodka Trump told the committee that the two of them have used personal communication tools for work NPR's. Tim Mack joins us now. Hey, Tim hitter. So we should note that this information is coming from a democrat that committee, chairman Elijah Cummings. What does exactly what Cummings is saying here? Okay. So the house oversight committee head a meeting with Kushner's lawyer Abbe Lowell in December and says that during this meeting the attorney confirmed that Kushner has used and continues to use what's app as part of his official duties in the White House. That's the communications AP. When asked if Kushner communicated with foreign leaders using WhatsApp law simply said that Kushner, quote, head communications with people outside the United States. And when asked if classified information was ever discussed using the app Kushner's lawyer simply said, quote, that's above my pay grade, not exactly answering the question the law requires that senior officials like Jared Kushner preserved their official communication's his lawyer said that he is in compliance with the law indus-, oh by taking screen shots of his what's up conversations and sending them to his White House E mail or to the national Security Council but law contents he has never confirmed any conversation between Kushner and foreign leaders. Okay. So that's the Kushner story what about others in the White House like Ivanka Trump? So according to Cummings law also told the house oversight committee that Ivanka Trump gets work emails on her private account, and that she doesn't Ford those emails to our official count unless she response to it her turning now. Now says that he was referring to earlier emails to a personal account and stress that she now follows proper record keeping rules. The committee also claims in another situation to have evidence showing that KT McFarland the former deputy national security adviser used a personal AL dot com. Email address to talk about the transfer of sensitive nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia McFarland was apparently talking to a personal friend of President Trump's while working on that issue and Steve Bannon, he's the former White House chief strategist he also received an Email about this Saudi nuclear plan through his personal Email account all these allegations here sound a lot like the criticism Republicans leveled against Hillary Clinton for using a private Email server when she was secretary of state how fair is it to compare the situation with Clinton to this these situations here is that the same law that governs both of these situations..

"A feeling that growing up. They're an F B O with your your parents that had a lasting effect on your life because you currently live with your airplane. Yes. Actually to airplanes, I'm an airplane, hog. If I had a bigger house and hangar, I could I could have more. But my wife probably has something to say about that. But. Yes. It is. I always wanted to live with the airplanes. Always from the time. I was a little boy ended in Michigan. There weren't that many opportunities. You know, you've got several irks there to the south and to the north of the twin cities but over here in Michigan. We weren't quite as blessed. And so we looked at a couple, and we just couldn't make them work. And so we we looked at each other and said, well, guess what just have to make our own. We did we we've found a a privately owned public use airport that the owner was getting ready to sell and we now live on that airport. We were able. With the good graces of the. Department transportation in Michigan who was really during a previous administration was very very concerned about the disappearance of a lot of these close in general aviation airports. So this is the fifth one that they bought so they bought just the minimum amount of property. Call it an airport. We bought the the surrounding property, and then we manage it for 'em dot, and we also the homeowners association leases at from him dot it's turned out to be a really good deal. It's it's reduced the amount of taxpayer money that goes to support an airport yet it keeps an airport alive for access to the community. So we in the adjacent property have developed a nice little subdivision. The number seventeen and eighteen houses are going up. This winter. And and we have a nice active community were growing looking at more hangars, but it is a lifestyle that I wouldn't trade for all the tea in China to be able to right now as I'm speaking to you. I'm looking out my picture window upstairs at my two airplanes and the contractor who's fixing or door. I just noticed. But anyway, it's it's a great lifestyle. Hit the door opener and taxi out in and go off on the wings of mercy trip or tour to my business. And it's I just wouldn't trade it or just out having fun enjoying recreationally. Sweet. Now, what you've got to aircraft. What are you have? What are you currently? Yeah. I have a fifty four Cessna one eighty classic. I have a I have a. Have a beech baron B? Fifty five baron that I use for wings of mercy flights fabulous. And you said you're they're building up seventeen and eighteen. Did you see our eighteen and nineteen? Yeah. Number seventeen and eighteen will be getting ready to cut the foundations in right now. And and we'll have those up and then six or seven new hangars for those that don't live on the airport over the public side of the airport. Okay. This coming spring. So we're we're definitely in a growth mode. Let's talk about Cody Welsh and associates how long ago did you start that? I've been selling airplanes since I was a wee. Boy, nineteen seventy it was my first sale and I've done. Right close to eight hundred units. Now, my business is a aircraft consulting and brokerage business. I do acquisitions and in brokerage, and they specialize in the piper PA forty six. The last ten or twelve years, but over the years I've done business jets and every kind of airplane in my in my office. I have photos on the wall all the walls are covered, and they they kind of represent everything and aviation. Interesting piece on your website about the evolution of the forty six. Yeah. That it's just a curiosity. And it's turned out to be a really good idea. People call and in in really appreciate that. And probably opens a few doors for me that wouldn't otherwise be available to many people like to know everything they can about something when they make a major purchase. That's what it's about. What advice? Do you have for those who are looking to buy their first airplane? Due diligence due diligence due diligence. I find somebody who can can tell learn the airplane. Don't be impulsive study it. Join associations of like minded people. Learn everything you can. And then hire a professional to guide you through the field of landmines as it were to to find. Find out everything you can about the airplane. And and then go into it with your eyes wide open. Don't don't just by the first airplane that comes down the street because it has a pretty paintshop, Cody. It's such a pleasure to have you on a show on the show. And again, the website is Cody Welsh dot com, and you can learn all about Cody Welsh.

"Carolina department transportation says and we've had search and rescue crews out through the evening through the night overnight. Rescuing people we've heard hundreds of people being taken from their homes up there in in the new Bern area. Yeah, I'm just looking at a map here. New Bern is a little way inland. It's nowhere near the beach. But you're saying that water was pushed up a river. And it's by a river there. And that's that's why the flooding is taken plenty exact as a couple. Rivers there in the news rivers, the one, that's flooded. And it's from the Pimlico sound and as the rotation of the storm just starting yesterday started pushing the that wall of water head of it. And that's and they started seeing that early, and, you know, a lot of people, but some people didn't. And they're the ones who are calling now. And we're hearing calls on on the media people in their addicts. You know, talking about waiting for for rescue crews are out there trying to do that is the electricity holding up. Now, we've lost our power here. At least where I am at the hotel in Wilmington. We know there's hundreds of thousands of people of power out here. I would say that. It's just climbed dramatic, CLYDE. If you've lost power in Wilmington. Then you've lost a lot more people. So we're we're over three hundred thousand I would think at this point just in North Carolina alone. Oh, you're saying that Wilmington is the central area the place where power is gonna stay. If it's gonna stay anywhere. So in rural areas, it must be really bad at this point. Right. Exactly. I think so. So how many people did stay in their homes as far as you can tell well. We spent some time in Carolina beach the other day, and it was a ghost town. You know, everything some whole sections of town were just boarded up, and no one was around. But you did find people there. So, you know, it's a very the vast majority of people left, but you're always going to have some some people who believe that they have the supplies. They have the wherewithal to stay and you hear time, and again, people say, well, my home is never flooded. And the message we've got from from emergency managers here is that this is an unprecedented storm..

"He wrote a report for Ripley entertainment the company whose boat sank last week. Stephen, welcome here now. And you inspected boats the company. What did you tell them? I warned them that the the ducks would not pass federal or Missouri department transportation standards. The first thing that that raised a red flag with me was at the exhaust was forward of the passenger compartment. Which is a big no-no with commercial vehicles. The exhaust always has to come out behind the passengers. What does it matter? Well, while you're going down the road, if you have exhaust coming out in front of the vehicle, the the passengers are going to be exposed to carbon monoxide poisoning. A couple of other small items that I noticed was that the the ducks did not have a rear bumper, which department transportation standards require a rear bumper for collision avoidance. And then there was also a a high, three choir -ment violation with the the marker lights along the sides. I understand. You also said that in the case of severe or inclement weather, which of course there was last week that those boat engines could fail. That is correct with the exhaust coming out the front and dipping below the the water line water could get up into that exhaust and then end up cutting engine off in some of those ducks their housing. Called a Sebok's, which is a special airtight box that has the pump and stuff in it. But nonetheless, if the engine's not running than the duck, not gonna be able to pump out his own water. So was it your opinion that this boat these boats owned by this company? We're not safe? Well, the unfortunate thing is, is that the regulating bodies have not come together to to regulate these invidious vehicles department. Transportation doesn't want to have anything to do with them in the US. Coastguard only knows water, so they don't know how to regulate it on the land. Unfortunately, I think if both regulating bodies had come together and developed some sort of standard for fitness vehicles, specifically in decided who was going to do the inspection on these boats would either have been designed differently or not operation. I wanna play some tape from a survivor of last week's crash, Tia Coleman. Nine members of her. Family died in this incident. And she said over the weekend that the captain told them, they did not have to wear their life even though they were on the boat, nobody grip. The captain as as the however, in doing that when it was time to grab him, it was too late. When you hear that, what do you think I mean, would lifejackets have made a difference like and see that the if you had a life jacket on in that craft that what the canopy and the sides down on it, you're gonna be trapped. You're not gonna have any any way to exit. And the only way to get out was the back of that craft because the windows were still down. "A heading into this session they didn't even have enough money in the state transportation department to do basic maintenance on the state's roads in so the legislature this year had to increase the department transportation's borrowing authority by four hundred million dollars just so they could do basic maintenance on the roads and a lot of people thought that was antithetical to conservatives and when your borrowing money to pay for essentially basic daytoday services and so that's one example i think of where things kinda fell apart is it you know we have seen in the past and maybe in the kansas case critics from washington conservative critics saying well you cut the taxes but you just didn't cut you're spending in a patch your problem you didn't complete the magic formula that's right and and there were calls for the last four or five years and melissa can talk about this as well to cut spending at the conservatives in fact just last week when they were putting through the budget said we refuse to vote for this budget seen it spent too much money and we should be cutting our spending instead and yet the very late in the session the proposal they unveiled to balance the state budget had very few spending cuts in it instead they were going to securitise the state's tobacco settlement fund and do more one time borrowing from different funds and delaying payments to the state retirement system and i think that is what a modern republicans and democrats and frankly constituents in voters got tired of seeing spending wasn't getting cut but as melissa said these accounting tricks were being used year after year after year to balance the budget which created a structural deficit in the budget that was much deeper than the gap if they had to close from your year representative rooker melissa rooker a year there representing twenty of district in kansas was there.
