With Milk Sales Up, Dairy Industry Revives Iconic Got Milk Campaign
"From, wondering I'm David Brown and this is business wars daily on this Thursday August twenty seventh something strange happened over the last few months we started drinking milk again think it might have had anything to do with pandemic for the last several years. It's felt like the dairy industry been singing swan songs milk sales fell thirteen percent from twenty ten to twenty eighteen according to CNN I one dairy. Then another collapsed under the weight of competition from plant based drinks soy almond, coconut, banana, Oat flax all. Those plants were out to get poor daisy the cow the dairy industry was so freaked out that it launched a pilot lawsuits against makers of those plant based drinks trying to forbid them from using the very word milk. You can't squeeze milk out of another grain they said but for the moment, at least dairy farmers are experiencing a bit of relief with. So many of us eating more meals at home, we're guzzling the white stuff again, it's long been true that milk drinkers tend to drink milk. Not at restaurants. So lockdowns have in fact, helped the dairy business cow's milk sales rose about twelve percent over last year for the twenty weeks ending. July eighteenth CNN reported your kid and mind mindlessly grabbing a swig from the carton added up to four and a half billion dollars in sales this spring, and that has spurred the dairy industry to revive an iconic ad campaign. Remember got milk. Vast company called it one of the most famous ad campaigns in history that campaign was launched in Nineteen ninety-three, its message, whatever you do don't run out of milk over time three hundred celebrities including Britney Spears Dennis Rodman Bill Clinton, and the simpsons all appeared sporting those milk mustaches. The ads became enormously popular by the end of the campaigns run in two thousand, fourteen, ninety percent of all adults were familiar with got milk to Huffington Post Contributor Gene Delvecchio but there was one a little problem. The ads didn't actually work over that same time milk sales declined steadily soda consumption bubbled over guess what those Soda Lovers used to drink you got it delvecchio a former AD industry executive argues the got milk ads were like bringing peace shooters to a gunfight, the gunfight being Pepsi and Coke Monster Marketing Budgets while the to soda makers battled each other milk lost but the dairy industry apparently believes their campaign was effective embracing Estonia the industry's marketing arm milk. PAP has revived the got milk campaign today's ads bear little resemblance to the Owens though. Sure there's still some celebrities Olympic gold medal swimmer Katie decades, viral tiktok video showing her perfectly balanced a glass of milk on her head while swimming a lap. That's certainly a turned heads but the bulk of today's campaign features, regular folks and a ton of user generated content milk drinkers were urged to do silly things with milk and boy did they respond people open gallons of milk with their toes jumped into kiddie pools filled with milk and cereal according to the trade paper? Agra. News will this generation's got milk ads do anything to keep the cow's milk train going if the wildly popular ad campaign of your didn't work well. Be Hard pressed to say that this one is a better peashooter. The dairy industry itself is making predictions. They say they're simply celebrating the quarantine induced sales boost. What is true however is that the competition from those plant based rivals is only getting. Over the same twenty weeks that saw a twelve percent rise in dairy milk sales oat milk sales went through the roof up two, hundred, fifty percent. Of course, oat milk sales are still tiny compared to cow's milk. They totalled only one, hundred, thirty, five, million dollars, but other signs point to the continued aggressive challenge from those gentle plant based alternatives. Oatley the. Leading oat milk maker recently attracted two hundred million dollars in investment funding from blackstone and Oprah it hopes to go public next year according to Forbes, and on Monday good Karma, a maker of flax milk bought itself back from bankrupt dean. Foods investors are Thurston lapping up all of these cream alternatives and no matter how beloved the Got Milk Gad's once were. All this competition puts a whole lot of pressure on twenty twenties version of the same campaign.
Farmers are Swimming in Milk, but Can't Get it to Needy Food Banks
"Spilled milk. It has a whole new meaning. These days with restaurants schools and universities closed. Dairy farmers are swimming in millions of gallons of milk. They can no longer sell at the same time. Millions more Americans are hungry. Food banks across the country are seeing dramatic. Spikes in demand is unemployment swells. But they don't have enough food one of the products in short supply. You got it milk. Here's what the mismatch looks like spring the time of year when cows produce the most milk so they have more milk than usual and much less access to their regular customers and even though farmers are donating some milk food banks according to the New York Times they're still dumping about one and a half million gallons daily that's because farmers have been limited in their ability to give away enough milk to prevent the enormous waste time set but couldn't they just give away more milk. The short answer is no and the reason is two pronged for one. Food Banks. Don't have enough refrigerators or volunteers to handle too much milk at once. The other reason is that the cost of transporting and distributing milk is just too high for many farmers produce. Growers and cattle ranchers are having similar problems according to the New York Times not since the Great Depression has so much fresh food been destroyed but these are just the latest struggles facing the dairy industry as we reported in previous episodes. Dairy farmers were in trouble before Kobe. Nineteen in part because Americans. Just don't love cow's milk like we used to instead. We're increasingly turning to alternatives. Soy Almond Banana. Milk are changing. Tastes have real consequences. Just last November. The country's largest dairy supplier dean foods filed for bankruptcy now revenues. A fallen by half again for many dairy farmers. It's a distressing break in the supply chain farmers who can't sell enough milk are suffering and so are millions of people who don't have enough to eat. According to the nation's largest chain of food banks feeding America in normal times about thirty seven million Americans are considered to be food insecure. Now another seventeen million people recently unemployed also need help to avoid hunger at least eleven million of the hungrier children. According to the nonprofit it took several weeks but at least two big grocers are stepping in to help fix the supply chain mismatch last month. Publics began buying excess produce in milk and donating it to feeding America in. Its first two weeks. Public says it purchased and donated one hundred thousand gallons of milk and a million pounds of produce. The LAKELAND Florida grocery chain plans to continue the initiative released several weeks. According to CBS News public efforts are regional so far. The grocer is buying milk from dairy farmers. In the southeast and vegetables from Florida Growers Public's also donated two million dollars to feeding America. According to a statement Kroger America's largest grocery chain soon followed suit. On April Thirtieth Kroger said it would purchase two hundred thousand gallons of surplus milk and donate to feeding America and community food banks. Some might say both grocers can well afford to help in a normal year. Kroger's revenues are well above one hundred billion dollars with everyone. At Home Kroger's sales have surged. Revenues grew thirty percent in March. According to the Texas Observer Kroger's stock is currently close to its fifty two week high public to has been doing well with twenty nineteen sales of thirty eight billion dollars. The company says it sales grew this quarter by about sixteen percent over the same period a year ago with about two thirds of those sales due to all the home cooking. Americans are doing right now. The scale of America's milk problem for both farmers and the unemployed is so massive that the efforts to businesses alone are far from enough. That's something the federal government recently recognized. The Department of Agriculture will begin spending three hundred million dollars a month to buy surplus milk produce and meat from distributors and ship it to food banks. According to The New York Times some states to are getting in on the action for example New York is trying to help its own farmers deal with its huge pools of excess milk. It plans to give food banks twenty five million dollars to purchase products made from the milk. It's also working with food processors like Shabani Hood and Cabot to help them. Turn that milk into yogurt. Cheese and butter. The newspaper reported the fact that Kroger and Publix are redistributing surplus milk to food. Banks may be laudable but the quantities of no faith committed to purchase now to a drop in the bucket victims white question now is whether other businesses step up to help farmers and the hungry

I. B. C. good morning dean is the country's largest milk processor they filed for bankruptcy in November so J. farmers thinking keeping Tina float is essential the mail processor is a significant customer very farmers of America according to the present CEO no one is great oranges reserving expanding milk markets and then the dairy farmers of America they're going to pay four hundred twenty five million dollars for dean's delivery system and forty four of its facilities as well as other assets they're also going to assume some of the liability is I am very curious to see how this works because with dean is saying is they couldn't make money and distributing milk so why do you now pick up the distribution if the distribution wasn't profitable well we have to get our product to market is there's not another way to get the product to market I'm I clearly don't know enough about this to know how this is all going to play out I think it's kind of fascinating but not knowing about things you know that's something you're not Hey I don't know about this then of course you get into Michael Bloomberg who's I all I know everything about everything I know I made money in my life I know things the popcorn moment the store you need to hear to believe and grab your popcorn because there is more of course everybody is laughing this right here my Clune Berg talking about farmers anybody even people in this room so no offense intended to be a farmer you it's a process so you dig a hole you put a seed and you put dirt on top add water comes the corn then we had three hundred you could learn that see that that's all it is the farm that's all there is that is all you've got by the way I invited the farmers to call in three one seven two three nine ninety three ninety three we've talked before you know well about what it is and they work with what it is they're dealing with whether or not there they supportive of president trump and here comes Michael Bloomberg who just lay the debate stage in in a vat of this week which is going to actually take part in I'll get into that later this is how he describes forming see how simple it is was notified manufacturing and then you have three hundred years in the industrial society you put the piece of metal in the late to turn the crank and the direction of the arrow and you can have a job see it's all just so easy its its embarrassing to hear a lead us talk like this as if they know things right I refer to it as his New York privilege he is it is it is New York privilege but the truth is the fee that we use to prevent shock isn't fun this is what elitism does in the wee doesn't exist everywhere to just for the rich exists for the poor a lead ism is about thinking that you are better than because if you listen to the rest of a Bloomberg said that's what he gets into and we created a lot of jobs one point ninety eight percent of the world worked in that in agriculture today it's two percent in the United States now comes the information economy and the information economy is fundamentally different because it's built around replacing people with technology and the skill sets that you have to learn our how to think and analyze and that is a whole degree level different you have to have a different skill set you have done a lot more gray matter Graham out of brains folks you got to have brains to see we met the people who are part of this information a society we don't think that they're much smarter the idea that the farmer is not not have intellect these are our neighbors the farmer doesn't have intellect you know criminally insane that is do you know how diseases that is but the truth is it comes from a place of the purest ignorance he doesn't know he made a determination because once back in elementary school he took home a potted plant in a styrofoam Cup for mommy the mathematics the science involved the skill sets involved informing to a level of successful this time who have grown a couple tomatoes you back good by the way talk to the people grow top couple tomatoes in the backyard they'll tell you how much time they spend road it is it is pathetic this is what elitism does lead ism gets people detached from being otherwise normal people Christopher Hitchens used to discuss this in terms of religion religion he and in his view the talks to people who were or normally decent and turn them evil it now I I don't I've always said about Christopher Hitchens I don't know if he's right but he's wrong which is to say that when he goes through the historical perspective of religion in in American around the globe you cannot match of historically and the examples that he brings up are sometimes well devastating I don't think that somebody who is religious is therefore de facto evil I don't think that a belief in a in a in a supreme being I believe in god make someone evil the idea of evil make someone evil that's always been my take but if I were to utilize that that Hitchens type arguments and apply it here Michael Bloomberg could have been a normal guy but he was a successful guy financially and therefore it has absolutely rotted the mind because he thinks because he says it it must be factual elitism does that you wanna leaders in let's take it to people to judge talking to a crowd about Planned Parenthood I don't I think was a Planned Parenthood event Crying Over Spilt Milk? Americas Largest Dairy Producer Files for Bankruptcy
"From one. Three I'm David Brown and this is business worse daily on this Wednesday November twentieth for anyone over with the age of thirty. The idea that milk is an industry could be in trouble once seemed unthinkable as well the notion that we might not need gas to fuel our cars or coal to run our power our plants goodness. How will they get things done? Well in the past milk wasn't so much choice as a commodity of basic household necessity. But things change in these days. These things are changing. Fundamentally witness last week's bankruptcy filing by Dean Foods America's largest producer of cow's milk and other dairy products the ninety four or your old company was founded by Samuel e Dean and Intrepid Entrepreneur who purchased the illinois-based Pekka Taneeka evaporated Milk Company in Nineteen Twenty Five. The business business grew and changed over the decades today. It owns fifty eight brands including dairy pure milk. land-o-lakes butter true move flavored milk's in friendly's ice cream now the once multibillion dollar conglomerate is struggling to stay alive with sales and profits down its stock has declined eighty percent over the last year. The company filed now for bankruptcy protection on November twelve and is exploring a sale to dairy farmers of America. That organization is a Kansas based cooperative of more than fourteen thousand dairy every farmers many of which are deemed suppliers. Dean foods blames shifting tastes for its current predicament. Quite simply Americans aren't drinking nearly as much milk as we used to. Since nineteen seventy five milk consumption has fallen by forty percent in recent years. You can pin some of the blame on the rapid rise of plant based MILKS folks from Soy to almond banana to Oat milk. Sales of plant based milk shot up nine percent last year. According to the plant based Foods Association at the same time sales of cow's milk fell six percent indeed dean foods may be kicking itself for getting rid of one of its most profitable divisions in twenty twelve. Oh saying it wanted to focus more on its core dairy business. Dean spun off White Wave. One of the biggest producers of soy and other Plant Milks the French Yogurt Company then owned bought White Way. For ten billion in two thousand seventeen in a seemingly prescient move dean must have had second thoughts about forsaking the fast growing plant the milk market just last year. It took a majority stake in Boulder Colorado Flax Milk Company. Good Karma too little too late however and competition from plant. Milk isn't in Dean Foods. Only problem healthy alternatives to cow's milk have exploded more and more of us are drinking sparkling water Bucci's teas and organic juices not dimension simply plain old water. That's hurting milk sales so to the decline of lowly breakfast cereal. no-one pours milk on the energy bar. They eat during their morning commute. You'd either so there's that and then there is. Almost an entirely separate trend. Big retailers like Costco and Walmart are deciding. They need to control their own food. Supplies supplies for cost reasons and also for transparency into their supply chains last year Walmart one of Dean's biggest customers built. Its own milk processing plant in Indiana according to CNN Walmart can now supply five hundred of its thirty seven hundred stores with its own cheaper milk no longer as good a customer Walmart now poses a threat. Dean foods has secured eight hundred fifty million dollars in what's called debtor-in-possession financing that funding will allow it to meet its pension allegations and

Is all over to sixty percent of US users are twenty four years or younger the other forty percent or probably the Democratic presidential candidate better or kids. I love to talk. I love to talk. You should vote for me. where's our youngest intern? We've got to get on this. Tick Tock thing it's also super super addictive. Get this debt. The average American user uses Tick Tock for fifty two minutes a day. I'll have fifty two minutes in my dad's got algorithms that are gonNA keep hugh hooked tip talking one catch here. It's owned by Chinese company. Called Bite dance in United States. Senators are worried. That kids Karaoke is being taken by the Chinese Communist Party. Welcome to two thousand nine hundred and social media. It's also interestingly a threat to facebook specifically to instagram which facebook own this statistic. This this is wild. Tick Tock with the fastest ever social media company to hit one billion users. It's done they did. It has more user by far than twitter and snapchat come by and it has about as many as instagram which is owned by facebook. And that's why get yesterday's news. INSTAGRAM launched this thing. Called reels and real is a complete knockoff of Tikva and just because the team over at facebook didn't want to be too obvious with this. They only launched it in Brazil. 'cause you know not that we would hear of this. It's only Brazil. Well they're testing it there and I'm sure it's coming to America. We'd heard about this. It's happening you can't hide the so real fifteen second music videos. Perfect for Karaoke perfect for posting on instagram. I'm story and then there's the top reels which is real of what other reels there are. That could get Uvira on real. Yeah you could become the top rails with your like Frank Sinatra remained. It's a beautiful thing so jack what's takeaway for our buddies over Dick. American companies can rip off Chinese companies. Do it's called reels but facebook really just copying pick doc. Reels is a defensive move to prevent instagram users from defecting ticked. They might as well call this thing eye. Dick it pretty much is just Dick Dick. It did the same thing with instagram stories. which you all now? One of the greatest copies of all time and that crushed snapchat growth when facebook do that usually Chinese companies knockoff innovation. But it can happen the other way round two for our second story. Jack Gamer two percent all trick question because Dean foods just filed for bankruptcy as reminders. Such a loaded oded question. The Milk Company the friend of the couches loss. It's it's lost its CEO and it's it's head lawyer since we last cover them Dean Food Stock Quiz twenty two dollars in two thousand six had the top shelf milk out there were split this stuff out. Now it's eighty cents reason why well it actually actually has pensions. That does all of its workers from the past dry. Basically a monthly guaranteed retirement fund and. That's why it's filing for bankruptcy right now it is literally not literally Getting on its knees and asking a judge for mercy now. The reason it's in this situation is actually a much bigger issue but it gives them context. Here we've gotTa Talk The O.. G. OF MILK BIG DEAN Foods Dean food is the OJ big melodist. Fifty eight manufacturing facilities in twenty nine states making sour cream powder to build Alicia stuff and they've got fifty fifty brands. So you're not GonNa see bean milk on the car and but you're going to see some other stuff you're going to see friendly's friendly's ice cream is actually like done by Dean Milk Organic valley great stuff and then true oh chocolate milk not to be mistaken with. What's that Seinfeld drink? Why a Hulu no Lou? Yahu are you her job take out. We knew it was eventually also one thing like that. One Cook in your class got to have the chocolate milk and everyone else was. Second after them I D- foods is the only dairy stock out. There are now the new. CEO of Dean Foods got up to make an announcement yesterday so we jumped into the press release next island he said in corporate speak this is a quote unquote challenging aging operating in non corporate speak. He met Damn millennials. Kit there's just eat cornflakes with all mill. Oh they got almond. They got they got soy. They got cashier. They got their even squeezing milken keen Wa these days but seriously there's coconut milk. There's there's all these alternatives are potentially healthier potentially better for the environment. My Wife said at best. Humans are the only mammals that drink other mammals milk. And we're the only ones that drink milk after like babyhood babyhood which sounds very deep and there. I can't tell if that's a good thing. It's tough to forget that it's true but there are stats here. That make it a fascinating thing to sell the plant. Based as milk rose six percent last year now take thirteen percent of the milk. Category Plant based yogurts. We're talking like Coconut Yogurt. They're up thirty nine percent even even got ice cream. That's made out of Avocado. which in Vermont? We call fake ice cream sales of that kind of ice cream. It's up twenty seven percent and of course they're stealing market share from OPD dairy. That comes out of milk which is down three percent. The cows are in loving this also who can forget. I mean remember the great oat milk shortage of two thousand nine hundred people. People were clamoring at the walls of the blue bottle. Coffee like we need one. Carton of milk sold on Amazon this year for two hundred twenty six dollars. People couldn't get there all milks and it was a problem. So Jack what's the takeaway for our buddies over dean food. You can't blame millennials forever now everywhere we were looking on this story. You got millennials for this by me fat. We destroyed driving. We started hard this week almond milk this milk that but there's also a bigger issue here. That helped drive the fall of Dean Foods Walmart as UN millennial as it gets Walmart. I started sourcing. Its own milk from its own dairy plants just in the last couple of years and that means Dean foods lost a gigantic customer because they used to sell their various S. brands and milk to- Walmart so there's a plant based food trend that you can see and then there's this this Walmart detail which you have to come to snacks daily for you can't see every Trent for our third and final story. Alibaba singles day just shattered records. So we're looking at what happened to Alibaba. Stock Thirty eight billion dollars. Put that on a on a pillow pillow. Thirty eight billion dollars. That is how much merchandise was sold on. Alibaba's stores in twenty four hours. They could have bought three lifts with that kind of money. Five hundred million then. People bought things through Alibaba one. We're talking twenty four hour period here and we know what you're thinking. Okay that's Nice but how about Amazon Prime Day or black Friday well Amazon Prime Day most recently sold five point. Eight billion dollars worth of stuff. alibaba singles day sold thirteen billion dollars worth of stuff in the first hour. That's more than in Double Amazon Prime Day thinking also here which is singles day. What's going on? I missed out on the holiday I may or may not be single. Can I participate. A lot of questions. Started back in the nineties. When four students didn't stood in a line like one one one one and it looked like eleven eleven which is singles day celebrating? People who aren't couple right. It's actually highly literal now. Now it's much more produced in it's led by the tech giant. The Amazon China Alibaba they decked out their headquarters this week as if it was like the Beijing Olympics. Back in two thousand eight. There's a huge light sculpture in advertising.
