"Increase gun control measures <hes> additionally multiple studies suggested only a third of mass shooter suffered from untreated severe mental illness. I wanted also to play a clip from house. Minority leader kevin mccarthy who spoke to fox news and said that video games were in some large part to blame for the mass shootings the idea yeah these video games to dehumanize individuals to <hes> have a game of shooting individuals and others. I've always felt that as a problem for <hes> future generations others <hes> we we watch from studies shown before of what it does do individuals and indeed the president himself earlier today a cited <hes> violent video games as something to blame for the mass shootings lewis beckett. How much stock should we put in that. How much evidence is there support that claim. It's not worth spending one on second talking about video games. Violences is a real crisis. We have to be serious. I think it's <hes> something conservative caller mentioned earlier <hes> this feeling that there have been guns in this country for a long time what is particularly going on now. That's more important and more valid opinion to explore and i think it's worth saying that we know that gun. Homicides are all in this country have been trending down over the last two decades of the gun. Homicide rate is about fifty percent what it wasn't the early nineties at the same time that we're seeing suicides rising at the same time we're seeing what feels like an uptick in mass shootings but overall fewer people are being murdered with guns in this country than they were two decades ago and that's what's really hard about all of this. What we care about is saving people's lives. We have to acknowledge that. This is messy. Throw a lot of different things going on at the same time and that really <hes> making sure that we prevent violence that we can prevent as many people as possible from being shot means doing a lot of different things things and often doing things that run against people's instincts of what would be helpful but i think it's always important in these moments to remind everyone that there are tens of millions millions of americans who own guns this country and they are afraid in this moment and they are scared for their kids and they are horrified at this violence and a a lot of americans really do sincerely believe that gun control wouldn't make other people safer and that in fact carrying guns is the best way that they can keep the people around them safe life <hes> so i think it's more important to lift up the voices of ordinary gun owners in this debate then politicians who apparently have even taken the time time to get talking point that is fresher from the nineties. Jim berger win the minute. We have left <hes>. You've been very critical of the president today <hes> gee. How much do you feel that the republican party <hes> maybe more willing to address more expressly the concerns expressed about race and about focusing on on immigrants people of color <hes> in a violent way <hes> as a result of incidents like this or given the you feel that the president is doing this to kind of play to his base in wink to voters of a certain kind and passion <hes>. Do you think that people are along for the ride and not willing to to step up. What i think is that the president's base is not the entirety of the republican party but it's enough of it that standing up to the president makes puts a republican seat in danger so if you're a republican politician standing up through the president means potentially potentially losing twenty percent of your voters and the question is whether you should stand on principle and do the right thing <hes> <hes> and condemn the way. The president has conducted himself on these issues. Even if it's going to cost you your seat and i think people need to think about and as we've heard from college people resent being associated with that kind of violent thought <hes> simply by virtue of their partisan affiliation or political vote. You just been hearing from jam burger burger research fellow at fox paul. Thank you for joining us <hes> so much talk about extremism in this moment thank you and we've also been joined by louis beckett of the guardian who covers gun policy in the far right in the united states. "Must condemn racism bigotry and white supremacy. These sinister ideologies must be defeated. Hate has is no place in america hatred warps the mind ravages the heart and devours the soul why did need those words carry no weight for you while the other words do because the other words represent his consistent position overtime what what we've seen what we saw after charlottesville seen on multiple occasions is that when there is enough pressure on him from inside the white house or from outside the white house he will come out and make an effort to be presidential and what we have seen very consistently is that he will take it back so you know with the centerback chancellor s._a._p. We saw that pattern repeat itself again. He came out and said oh well. I didn't like those chanson then two days later he was like oh no. Those people are all great patriots so i mean this. Is you know it's ritualistic and i think it's important not to give him credit that he hasn't earned and for expressing it on assignment. I wanna take a couple of quick calls now a market calling from a dayton ohio markelle. Please share your thoughts. Hello hi mark. You're on the air. I want it. You got a lot of listeners here. I'm listening to you. Tell us your thoughts about the <hes> what you take from this that terrible event. I live in dayton ohio and frankly i am afraid now <hes> i used to be a little afraid the day that the the and it was over a period of thirteen hours but today's the day that the el paso shooting i told my wife it's only a matter of time time before it happens here at home and then later on that evening it happened at home. I i am someone who suffers from from mental goal issues and i take proper -cation and i go to therapy and i this this type of thing. Is this type of terrorism works. It doesn't work on everybody the the masculine folks who think that it's it's just a fight with guns. It's not about that. It's about the terror that instills in in the people that live there day to day. I used to work in the work on district and i wanted to go to the to the vigil last night but i couldn't because i was too afraid that someone would come and shoot that up. Well mark <hes> thank you for sharing your thoughts and also <hes> you know your own awareness of your own circumstances. I appreciate that we'd like to take a call now. From milwaukee wisconsin <hes> pat <hes> way in here so i in my you know in in the first ten fifteen twenty hours of both of these tragedies at-at eh you know a a conservative republican i would be open to some potential gun law changes and and i understand that that always hasn't been the stance of the republican l. look party however what backseat into my corner again and starts making me defend republicans and defend the president is the the media reaction. I mean we literally have presidential candidates saying that one man is to blame one man is racist and it makes me angry because suits have been going on for fifteen twenty twenty-five years. We had a lot of guns in the eighties. I wanna talk about some of the real problems yes gaza's which is part of that but what's making as a society having these people that houston act out and now they're acting out. Why aren't we talking about some of the broken in homes the breakdown of culture in general. I have a hard time <hes> human believing that one person is going to somebody's what he's words. I don't care if it's the president and this has been on both sides. I mean we had we had some congress. People almost get shot up by somebody who has a bernie sanders voter from what i've heard this person in dayton. His social media is talking all about what what you know left wing agenda. I don't wanna talk about that but it seems like even earlier in this program. We're talking about right wing right wing right wait. It's frustrating. It is frustrating and so for me pat. Let me let me just jump in here. It sounds to me as though you're frustrated about the fact that it seems a line you know people..

"Open investigation on you but if you're doing that through storm front and other things and explicitly avowing the desire for violence to occur against latinos jews moslems slim's <hes> blacks that is not a pretext for opening <hes> an investigation the same way if you're on storm front. That's not a pretty sure if you are vowing owing violence. If you are threatening violence <hes> instigating violence that is protect sir on jihadist web site that would be right if you were if you were in a isis told program channel that alone is probably protect open investigation now there are thousands of people in front and not a practical thing to investigate all of them but the authorities for investigating gating and monitoring domestic sites like that are much different and of course there's a hangover from the era in which there was concern about the fed said being actively involved in investigating people's political beliefs lowest beckett before we conclude this segment although we're obviously going to continue the discussion after a brief break. I want to ask you what <hes> briefly minute. We have left. What is the if any intersection action you see between a gun ownership gun usage gun violence and the kinds of white supremacist <hes> extreme right <hes> sentiment that you've convinced in the el paso shooters writings. I think one thing that we don't talk enough about in the gun. Violence debate is how how much racism and white supremacy are baked into the whole <hes> controversy <hes> and how much <hes> gun ownership has been linked linked with citizenship. We know that <hes> african americans have been denied gun rights. The black panthers dec- decision to parade with guns in public in the california legislature prompted a gun control crackdown and so it's possible if we talk about how <hes> gun ownership in violence are so much <hes> the the subtext most of this whole debate about who gets to be violent who gets to be armed who must be disarmed that might help us actually work towards solutions. We're discussing this weekend's mass shootings in in texas and in ohio. Please join our conversation especially those of you who are in and around paso dayton. "There's a fair amount of evidence now that the more fiction that people read the more empathic that they become novel exercises to enhance hands your empathy this week on hidden brain from n._p._r. It's the first episode of our summer series you two point. Oh this is on point. I'm david david folkenflik. We're talking about the mass shootings from this weekend in el paso texas and dayton ohio in a moment we'll be joined by two experts who've been studying gun violence and also how it intersects with domestic stick terrorism and white supremacy but first. I'd like to take some callers. We particularly have callers from <hes> the area of dayton ohio start with a nancy who's calling in an anansie share your thoughts at this terrible time well. I was at the visual last night and <hes> i was one of the voices that rose up and said do something yelled do something because what happened in dayton is just unconscionable. You know this this this should this needs to stop and <hes> <hes> governor the wind has an abysmal record on gun control and we need we have have seven pieces of legislation in our state legislatures <hes> state house right now that are just stuck and he can do something and we're just we're just calling rolling out and <hes>. I know that people are saying that they're angry that that they think this got politicized but that's not what this is about. This is the fact that that got nine people died and if people don't think that they are angry that they got killed. They're wrong. Well not just briefly. Why is it that you contend that the governor's a record is abysmal on this. He obviously says that <hes> <hes> that he wants things to stop and he says he wants to do things to address this. Why do you you feel his record is not one of the first things that he signed into legislation when he or into law when he became governor was to fill a low <hes> a <music> a loophole <hes> that <hes> <hes> strengthened gun access to these kinds of weapons the first one of the first things he he did now. He's he he. He might talk the talk but he does not walk the walk and you know he. He's in a very tough spot because he's got <hes> <hes>. He's got all these people that are pandering to them that are huge access n._r._a. People and he's got to keep his job. You know he when he was in the state house. He got an f rating the n._r._a. But when he when he when he was in the senate he got an f rating when now that he's now now he's governor you you know he's he's <hes> getting pats on the back so no you can't come to the city and talk this talk and it's just not acceptable to us. Okay okay. Thank you for that nancy. I'd like to take a couple of quick calls now from dayton. We have andrew coming at kalyan also from dayton andrew would your thoughts hello. Yes <hes> for me. It's just frustrating being someone in the middle not republican or democrat that regardless of party affiliation white nationalism domestic terrorism awesome antifa and we just can't come together <hes>. Nobody seems to be able to make an agreement without blaming the n._r._a. The gun makers or you know something else we just. We can't seem never come to agreement and someone like me. That's incredibly frustrating. Dayton ohio is right grew up those bars right along there in the oregon district or where regularly go out with my wife's. This is home and it's just frustrating. Everybody just wants to yell and scream point fingers rather than sit at the table..

"Very conscious of that and and you know when you when you read <hes> what appears to be his manifesto <hes> you come to understand that a lot of it may have been fueled by 'em anti immigrant of us <hes> a lot of what you'd hear <hes> from these groups that <hes> the test the growing number of hispanics in this country and and then the state <hes> and just exactly what it means <hes> so that's a little the reason why the police and the authorities. I think that it's linked to him. Briefly remind people of el paso pass from my people of the dual nature of this city and its distinctive its distinctive the land of of american and mexican identity sure absolutely well <hes> many people in el paso <hes> have family friends and what is and travel across the border every single day many what will make their way across the border to go to school <hes> somewhat go to work some have family here <hes> we all share a language together. We share culture together. This is very much by national bicultural area <hes> we all see each other as neighbors and the reason why something like this hit so hard is because that people from both sides of this <hes> from this border you know where we're affected goodbye this weekend's shooting and <hes> that's what's made it so incredibly difficult for people who live here because i'll pass wins have come to know that you know there's going to be violence in wada's and we've all kind of <hes> learn that and accept it that but you know we all still still venture out there anyway just because of how how much of a part of it is of our identity but generally you know people who come to a pass or not expecting to see something like this and that's what's made it so tragic seven. I believe seven of the twenty who were killed. We're actually mexican nationals. <hes> an vivid evidence of what you're describing aaron montas <hes> thank you for your work. Thank you for your time and thank you for sharing your sense of community at a difficult moment. We appreciate it so much and thank you for having me joining me. Now from dayton ohio is just made or she's a reporter for n._p._r. Member station station w._a._s._o. Who's been covering the shooting there and helping to coordinate her stations coverage just welcomed on point. Thanks for having me. Can you tell us a little bit about the events. It's <hes> last night and this morning what more we're learning what moore's transpiring in the community there in dayton right well first of all <hes> police and a host of of agencies that are assisting including the f._b._i. A._t._f. You know they're all working to understand what the motive may have been in this attack..
