Several times must be umpires. We really must be the umpire right. Greg that's what it was the umpires. It is this their approach at the plate. Well they've got the base loaded by the way with no outs in the six. And they're tied at two two in chicago so we'll see how this works out. Let's go to david in irvine. David how are you gay guys. Thirty points per game twenty rebounds for his career career wasn't spent in la. Yeah but he's a good part of his career in l. a. and brought it to championship. "Kobe or shack. And he built the showtime lakers. Yeah jerry did remember. Jerry put pat in that position. So let's open it up. Eight seven seven seven eight seven seven seven three seven seven six five. Most important lakers important is the key word. We'll get to that in two and a half minutes plan to make up we'll get all messy man. It would would be interesting. How much i used to play this song when you and i went to houston for the super bowl with key. What were you doing. Were you at that galleria when we didn't see you. Yes sir notarized being towed. I went to the gallery of twice. Wow you go look at that. By the way we were just talking about jeannie buses list of the five. Most important lakers were asking people to chime in and people are chiming entity seven seven seven seven. Espn we were also talking earlier about we. Do you bring the shopping cart back at the grocery store. We've got people on hold for that as well. But i got a text from the great. Tom looney at angelino a man who has been in this town for many years. Hot mike is what he s a radio legend and he says. The architect of the showtime lakers is something that people apply to jerry. West all the time. But it's just not true. Bill sharman built the showtime lakers and hired pat riley. Jerry loves to credit for it because people say that all the time and he doesn't correct them but it reminds me of me. I went to penn state in college and People always tell me. I went to an ivy league school which is u. penn. But i don't correct them didn't build didn't feel like draft magic right and he says that everyone else was jerry right. So like james worthy and all the other pieces was jerry. Bill sharman got magic right but apparently the story goes. He's telling me the story that that bill wanted to magic. Jerry did not jerry want. I don't know who else is in that draft. Lunacy call there you go. Oh my god dude man. They're already great hustler or something y. Let's go to How do you say this person's name. Greg leslie leslie leslie in rancho palos verdes. Luckily what's up. Hey how are you guys doing. Hey excellent you. Guys are very entertaining. We love to listen to you every day. Thank you thank you. okay so Yeah i work at a major grocery store and My pet peeve is that people leave their stuff in the grocery card like what would you say. They at least their hand wipes and math. Oh yeah reds probably extra. Do you work at a grocery store in rancho palos verdes and kind of yes like jensen. He the pitcher for the dodgers. He shops there. Okay very nice a very nice guy. Okay yeah he is very nice. We've had him on here recently. So but you do believe you're saying that it says here that you say that most people do bring them back though. Most people are kind enough to bring them back. Yes sometimes they push them in the bushes you know. But for the most part of a netflix. Hopefully none of those. We don't get too many people in the bush if you are in rancho palos verdes and you're leaving your car in the bushes we're gonna come after you. Okay because you have a little harder leslie thank you for the time buddy appreciate it. Okay thank you. You got take you out there. I mean in the bushes. That's that's extra for no reason but leaving your mask and leaving like a wipe you thing for your hands or whatever in the car itself while not putting it back. It's just like another level. Yeah just throw it away. There's there's tons of places that stuff away now. Like i i mean man i again. I said this earlier. Maybe yesterday about littering it. Just there's no excuse for littering. There's garbage cans everywhere now. Okay i mean asked the astros. They're even making inflatable ones. These days for them. So there you go was gotcha. I gotcha i saw. Mitch mitch. What do you got guys. Hello mitchell hey how are we doing. Thanks technical good show so much stuff. went to say I l z time. Still right yes sir. You're right the clip. Sometimes when he on clippers said okay but it seems like all right more about the clippers. I'm no longer in sports. My man yeah. He's writing general count. You can't just write something cool about the carriage about bomber stuff taking easy-osy that's good took it up and that's actually harder news. What do i you know what i will sing. I will do some some tweets. I'll meet you way. Okay pers- housing. I'm going to tweet right now. The clippers are an nba team every got to and got injury. Like the like the lakers and dodgers forest ad. When he was only he wanted to be a big man he was didn't want to be the top door. Bron actually lebron guy over here If the get lebron they arrest in wrestling his mouth. So please assess. He talks much every single subject. Sometimes you say too much trouble By lebron abroad nineties quite on. You know how i mean. How do we abiola but The points always told us so much last week. You know. it's a soap opera hundred percent. Well i do. I do think there is. I don't know if he talks too much. I mean he he you know. He has media availabilities. He has to speak to the media like we just got fine today. Thirty five thousand dollars mitchell. They give the call because he didn't speak to the media so you know it looked l you put this in some perspective the other day that lebron sometimes has some stuff. And i'm not gonna say he loves drama. I'm not saying that i'm just saying that. Sometimes sound like you're saying he says some stuff knowing that the reaction is going to be the reaction right. He's he's smart. He knows what the media is going to do. He knows what fans are gonna do. There are moments. I feel that he speaks out of frustration. Naturally we're having. I think his comments with his ankle were about you know talking about frustrating where he is right now in the recovery process right. He's not happy. He's not and real quick quick. He said the same thing. Okay in two thousand fifteen. Because i had this conversation. With dave mcmenamin. Today i ran into him and when he came off the back injury. We had the big back injury when he first came back to cleveland and he missed a couple of weeks and everyone was freaking out and he came back to miami university. Oh he misses and and all that stuff so he has made comments like this before he specifically said i'll never be one hundred percent again hundred percent again then to give it a lasota shrug because when you know someone You know what motivates someone when they speak out of that ecosystem of the source of motivation. Either say are. They no longer motivated or just frustrated. Clearly lebron still motivated so it must be door number two. He's just frustrated. I just wonder if he's trying to set everybody up like hey look you know. I'll never be one hundred percent again so when he goes on the floor. They're like they're looking at them and they're like you know the good thing. Is he not really a one hundred percent. Never going to be again you know. It's kind of like jim. Brown running back used to say that when he would get hit he might stay down on the ground a little bit longer and he might make. It seem like he was hurt so that the other players like. Oh we got him. He's hurt now. He's road with open your eyes. That's why i'm asking. Could he be possible. It's very possible. I wouldn't put it past him. Limit is in la hermit. You got your top five go ahead. You forgot one person. The greatest flaker time dr gary. He did what the forum laker girls.

"Similar experience. I was watching that first. Forty minutes like we were saying. They just like smooth as butter. And i was thinking to myself like oh could this be a five stoler. It feels like it's well on its way there and then we hit the you know men and women stuff in the dressing slutty stuff and i start to get sad like oh dave. The almost knocked out a perfect five stoler. I think i'm gonna go. Solid solid four stools. It's kind of hard though. Because i want there to be like a super place for dave chapelle you like you want the stools to be like four of them. But they're like really good. Those four. The best force. Their varies very sturdy stools. Yeah i think for the most part. I agree with both of you. Put it in a slightly different way. Which is it's easy to be like well. Eighty percent of this special was great. So as a result you get a stool for if you do four fifths of stools or whatever. That's an eighty percent however it's almost like well if there was twenty percent that wasn't good any- spread it out throughout all of it. How would that be like. And i think the thing that i come back to is watching this. I wasn't only like this is really funny. And this was really good. I was like this was so stylistically. Consistent and clear and like formally pretty revolutionary. How did it laughing himself was not a thing that was okay. He's sort of like allowed people. Do it again which is different relationship to the audience. We're like we're having fun here. I'm not trying to kill me versus you have fun. I'm gonna slap your hand. This is a communal experience and that really shaped how a lot of comedians would start doing comedy in the years. How he balances different types of jobs. Really interesting so for me for special to be five stools. Every joke doesn't need to be great but they all have to be the same point of view and the same clarity of point of view and successfully articulated vision and the problem with that section that we all agree is so clearly just worse. it doesn't even feel like the same guy. It feels like a worse. Comedian got to do those jokes. And it doesn't fit into the point of view that he has established. It feels nothing like him. It's not about agree or disagree just lives like this is a different. It's like if you went to see a painting and it's like abstract for all of twenty percent. It's like a really realistic picture of a flower. You'd be like this is so jarring incorrect. It's not a clarity of perspective that you'd hope for your best stand up specials though the stand up in it is the best has ever been done. That's why it's so complicated. You're like that. Eighty percent is better than almost any comedy. That's ever been done in definitely in my lifetime. This was my favorite special at the time. This is my favorite comedian. At the time. I watched a special prime more than any other special. But you just can't be like this can i. Don't know scorsese had a movie that twenty percent up to sort of felt like a different movie like this. You wish you engage in new york. It's you know like it's almost like what sometimes hinder judd abdo movies were like. Oh there's twenty percent of it feels like not that. The story is different feel slightly like a different movie. And it's it's a drag and that's like a little bit what it felt like so i will say obviously forced tools are give I'm going to give it to legs for how good those four stools are overcame. A lot of how not as good the other parts were. But there's still enough of it that i'm like it's undeniable. You can't give saying four stools two legs for our buddy dave chapelle. Dan would be four and a half. We thank you though. Dave chapelle for doing this for being so important in my life dave's life. Yeah i mean. This is my favorite standup special of all time. Yeah i haven't watched it all the way through in a long time because you know i have other things to do and if i want to watch it i'll watch. It is a youtube clip. Like i'll watch the parts of it. That i love the most. The baby thing is on youtube. There's like five million different versions of the baby in the ghetto on youtube. And i'll watch that. And i forgot that there was all this junk about women need to stop talking so much. I mean like what exactly about doing the show to wrap it up. It's like we'll be watching things. We have not watched before. But we'll watch things. We have through the idea of not just like modern morality but sort of like modern taste and comparing it to like whatever the panty enough stand up. Specials are in so many things get fixed in your brain of all the highlights. It's like when people are like ell was only good for this time period. It's like yeah because you've forgotten all the snl sketches. You did not like yes. There are so many bad moments in the first season of snl and people put it on this pedestal. like boy. you didn't watch all those be sketches. Where the bees are like nurses or something and it just goes on for every scott was so long that it's fun it's exciting to actually take art from motoric it as seriously as we can now and this is. I can't imagine a better way of starting this because it was like the special stand up can be so good and for me. And i'll say do our best to judge these things based on the context in which they were delivered at the time i can complain. You know all day about chapelle saying women should talk less. And it's a it's an abhorrent opinion. In retrospect it was a parent. Then we just didn't see it that way. But i think we had to dock him points for that part of the special not because it is offensive to us personally which it is and there will be plenty of specials that we're going to cover very soon that are offensive to us that we will happily say offensive. I had to doctor the special points for that. Because it was hacked. It was obvious and tedious in easy. And so. that's why. Dr not. Because i am personally offended which i am. Yeah i wasn't enjoying those parts. We have to take the context of these things seriously so often what we are offended by our failures of making the subject talked about not offensive. If your goal is to do something that is arresting people senses. You're doing a thing that you know is not going. Everyone's going to agree with your job as the joke writer is like to have people still enjoy it because you've done the moves of bubba. You make it surprising which is like the thing people always say about dave. You don't know where his punch lines are going. And this one you sort of knew right away everywhere. It's like oh it's going to be this. It's like that and it's easier to see now as we sort of. Have certain moral clarity around these things than when i was a teenager. Who like i've not talked to a girl in my life so like this is probably true. I don't know but now. I've talked to at least one and i'm like oh. This seems not universal. For how you're talking about it totally well. This was a great first five stools for both of you. Thank you Five.

"God damn on have a heart has a hard thing to be famous for me. Nobody won't be the most famous cock suck of all times. I feel bad or not. Even women feel sorry for a little bit ladies jealousy. This is conjecture and this is guessing but based on you know pretty rudimentary notions of how people respond to things you look at the audience and the audience is projecting themselves not under monica lewinsky. They're protecting themselves onto. Hillary clinton and hillary clinton is the wronged party in this narrative for a lot of people. She didn't do anything wrong. Her husband cheated on her. He needed sexual gratification and she was not offering it so he went to the first place he could find it and that was monica lewinsky. Who is a quote unquote hartley monica. Because she knew he was a married man. We weren't talking about the power dynamic between the most important person in the world from a political standpoint and an intern. We weren't talking about that stuff we were talking about is this guy cheated on his wife with someone who was not attractive enough for the president. Which is the undercurrent of the entire bit. Which is monica. Lewinsky was not as hot as marilyn monroe. Bill clinton was just using her to a jack you because he's busy before we get off the monica topic. I just have to give the only piece of context. I remember from that era for halloween. One year i wanted to be a beatnik. Because that's just what fifth graders do for halloween I wanna be meeting. I got a beret. And i wore like a black turtleneck and i had on the road and i carry that around. And that was my cost you. And his two thousand as wearing a beret. And i'm not kidding. Multiple people like trick or treat asking for my gandhi. Multiple people were like. Oh are you monica lewinsky. Is that your costume. Because i had a beret on and she was so famous for that fucking breakthough. A fifth grader dressing is monica lewinsky and going around as i was scarred soaps that people didn't get my costume. I'll never forget that i'm sorry. Yeah people are like on ready to be like monica lewinsky. Let's get her he brings up. We must boo her so weird. This is the period of the special where he loses me. And i feel like you guys agree. It's not natural when he talks about relationships between men and women. It's almost like this is his pandering to the black audience because a lot of black up comedy is about infidelity. It is about the sort of war of the sexes and men need physical gratification. And women have to be there to provide it and women are like. I don't wanna do x. Y. or z. Sex act the man is like. I also don't want to do xyz sex act. And here's why and blah blah blah blah blah like all of that stuff very much. There are just so material. I don't know the materialistic like mental. Like cars women carson men get carsick and get the women i was like but what i don't even know if a man didn't have to have a comfortable house he would. He would have sex in a cardboard box or the you know. There's some stuff later on in that where he talks about men just want a blowjob meal. This is not a quote but he wants you know they wanted to have oral sex. Be fed food for you to talk less. And there's just like this uproarious response to that. And i was like oh no but again. This is why you cannot look to this man or any of comedian for your morality for your truth for guidance on how to behave. How much do you think people are doing this though. 'cause that's been the probably what you talked about the most with him and i don't have that context exactly. I have the context of dave pell legendarily hilarious and definitely someone like yes watching the his special on the george floyd story and everything is just like absolutely essential viewing but i don't know about the intellectual thought leader aspect of it. Well i can speak from personal experience. I see the evolution of his act the evolution of how people talk about him. I see how. I felt about him as a teenager. And how people feel about him now and just from a career perspective jesse specifically is like. Hey dave dave chapelle. he's got any special out. It's a big deal. So i've written two or three things about chapelle vulture. Because he's considered a big deal. It's not as a comedian but as a personality as a truth teller like can we talk about this one joke in this special because this illuminate some important truth about human nature. I worked very briefly on the mark twain prize tv special for chapelle and the way people were talking about him was in this reverential. Hush tone is. We were having this meeting about like. What is this going to look like as a going to work in there like These are all white people. Of course like dave chappelle is one of the most important voices in our country and we want honor him and this is the mark twain prize for humor is a big deal for the white upper class of our society and it's at kennedy center is in dc. It's a huge sort of like to do where people wear tuxedos and You know they donate money to various causes because of this. It's not the kind of thing. Dave chapelle in two thousand and ever dreamed he'd be a part of so i can see just how people specifically white people talk about him. I mean i. i've been covering comedy different amounts. Let's say for the last decade. Broadly and i know what it was like to cover other comedians. How people responded to and dave chapelle was just a bigger deal and people were so excited and they didn't just wanna talk about how is funny like bird continuum one where you like..

"I got upset. I wasn't even man. I was just upset. I wasn't ready to hear that shit all these years. I thought i like chicken because it was delicious. Turns out. I'm genetically predisposed after that is that he uses a microphone drumstick. I don't know if birthday the community that either and that also it's stupid but like of course it is emails the mannerisms of eating that chicken just doing his little piece of chicken. I love it so much. It's a profound bit. Yeah lot of truth to it. But i wanna point out something that i is in here that should give you pause you start to confer importance to someone wearing dave chapelle says two things that caught me off guard in a special one was when he said you know. I like the police. I don't mind the police and yet they are racist and they will do these things like. He's hedging his bets here because again like family said comedians wanna be loved. They want to be liked. They're not trying to make points as much as they are trying to express their worldview and make you laugh yes and be understood. The second thing is when he says it's a laugh line. I don't vote. That's a so not twenty. Like i feel like twenty years ago. That was not as weird. Exactly why we got george w bush because a lot of people did because they thought it didn't matter i'm not gonna pillory dave chapelle. He said twenty years ago would he was just a kid not super duper famous. But what we do is a culture is say okay. This person made me laugh. He made me think simultaneously. How did he do that. I don't know but he did. So let's take this person who is very funny and very insightful. And then give them the power to affect intellectual change in the world. Make him like you said a public intellectual. Chapelle started doing comedy when he was fourteen. He's a comedian. He makes people laugh. He goes on stage details jokes. That's who he was it. Two thousand two. We was until chapelle show and him leaving when he left. That is the point when everyone decided that he was important in quotes. It wasn't until he left that the myth of chapelle began to really coalesce before he was just a funny guy. He was like the south park. Dude he's on comedy central frat guys like him. He's a on t shirts they sell it. Suncoast and sam goody and all of those schlocky places where you got t shirts back then. That's who he was but as soon as he decided. I'm gonna go to south africa and i'm gonna blow fifty million dollar deal with viacom. That's what he became important. And that's what. He became an expert on race relations when he became bigger than just a stand up comedian. He is not a great public intellectual. He is not a whit in the way. That friendly would describe a witty person. He's a stand up comic and the more that we treat him as something other than what he is the more we're going to be disappointed. And that is what. You're saying jasmine when you're talking about his opinions trans people right. He's an old black dude. Yeah exactly it's hard. Because you're like i do love his body of work and then he does something like that. But yeah i agree. We just cannot expect him to be more than who he is and he's going to disappoint all the time but he will disappoint us less if we expect less from him if we expect what he can offer the world which is comedy not grand pronouncements about the state of the planet that is not his job at never will be his job because that is not the job that he signed up for what he decided decided to be a comedian. When he was fourteen i agree. I think he'd be happier and we'd be happier for just like david pose a comedian and like sometimes in his work. You can read an interesting insights into extra. Why and i think we're in this growing period is the thing that i think about probably more than anything else. Which is like we've decided. Comedians are more important than like everybody else. We and it's around this time period. Right like jon. Stewart starts on the daily show ninety nine. This election happened so people distrust politicians because of what happened and they distrust the news media from messing this up then nine eleven happened so people are completely traumatized. And don't trust anything ever again. Comedians have been calling bullshit on everything for a really long time on the outside. And then everyone was. You know what they're right and because they've been calling a bullshit we're going to trust them more than the people were like trying to tell them who have an agenda as if communities don't have agenda and it's in congress and it will never be able to be reconciled and he keeps me going back and forth. He wants to be like they're just jokes. He's a they're just jokes guy except for when they're not like i'm just doing jokes except for here's like a ten minute speech about whatever i think the thing that also makes it worse. Which is i think. It's always bad when this happens with. Comedians is when you get to a big enough level people. Expect you to talk about the news. I think political comedy can be good. Satire can be good. I think topical comedy is always really really hard to be good especially after the fact and you see something of that in here. Which is there's a large section about the election and bill clinton and this came out in two thousand bill. Clinton was impeached in nineteen ninety eight. That means people are waiting for two years for him to make jokes about a subject that hypothetically jay leno was making twenty jokes about a night every night. One like it's just funny to think about how quickly think topical humor has to be comparison but also dave chapelle still does this and i think it's a bad trade of his which is parts of his said are. Let me comment on the biggest stories of the last two years. I don't know what that is where people like. We gotta wait for this guy's take on it. Yeah now that is so prevalent in the communities. That observe comedy is well. I can't wait for experts in to comment on this and chapelle is oftentimes the first person you think of you. Don't ask jerry seinfeld to special. About george floyd because you know he doesn't give a shit he's like. I'm gonna talk about my cars. And i'm gonna talk about how difficult it is to check a bag at the airport. And that's good because that's who he is. He's a comedian. he's not friendly but liebowitz. He's not dorothy parker. He's he's certainly oscar wilde. These are people who were not just funny. They were smarter than every other human being on the planet and they have legitimate things to say because they're very well read. They are in certain cases very well educated family boards. I wouldn't say as well educated but she certainly better red than most people and so she's the right to be considered a great public intellectual. In addition to being very funny dave chapelle started doing. Stand up comedy when he was fourteen. And we're giving him this responsibility. It's crazy chris rock. I wanna i know that we always pit them against each other unfairly. Yeah because they were the two biggest black standup comedians of their time with white audience. Yeah you know. I would dare say cat. Williams and bill bellamy. Some of those people were just as big with black audiences. Yeah i'll just know. The kings of comedy was this time period and the kings of comedy was huge. Huge executor tour bernie. Mac was a massive star but chapelle and rock were the ones that broke through with white audiences to a significant degree and chris. Rock is like you said the one that was coming out and saying this is what i believe and this is the problem. I am going to poke it that soar on your lip and try to get you to start brushing your teeth. Chapelle do that. But what chris rock did the chapelle didn't do is he stuck around and he changed his career trajectory and he developed different skills. He became a respected actor to the point where he can be the lead on a big emmy bait drama on fx about fargo. He can direct movies. He can host the oscars. He can do all of these things where it's not like people at watching saying. When is chris rock to comment on this thing. Because chris rock does all of these other things and he's so much more of a well rounded persona in people's minds. dave chapelle is. I'm rick james bitch and this.

"Grouch bitch. I live in a buck and trash the polls loan book on sesame street. Nobody's helping me away. He has the homeless people. Get it together. grouts job route. Yeah like that so often but he doesn't deliver that joke like here's a profound observation about the world which is how every not every comedian again reductive but many many comedians comedic voices humorous who were trying to effect change in the culture approach. Cultural commentary now is that it's very po faced in stern and like i'm making a point that you need to remember a need to go home and change your life. It's like you are being scolded. Sometimes by people who are doing satire or people who were doing politically charged comedy. Here it really is just a joke. I mean there's a world behind it and the people will get it will get different parts of it but he's not afraid for his jokes to have paradox or have people go into and be like. I'm not sure exactly what he's saying. He's forcing me to make decisions and he's allowing for a certain amount of ambiguity which is interesting. It's a more interesting thing to do. It's also harder to get people to laugh when or not sure. Exactly what you're saying because in a lesser comedian ambiguity might be like. Oh he doesn't always saying he's confident or ambiguity which is like the audience is thinking and they don't know how to react but he knows how to give people ambiguity while beings just so funny so silly that the text is funny enough and then like when you think about it later. It's it's interesting that you bring up the idea of ambiguity in his work because this is the big problem that he will face four years. Five years later is they're taking what i'm saying literally or they are taking the context of what i'm saying on chapelle show and i have to leave and i had to stop this ad to shut this down. And that is both the power of his comedy which is to be universal and funny but also the downside of doing that. which is. You're not really supposed to be finding this funny. This is supposed to make you feel uncomfortable. But i still doing comedy. I am still telling jokes. First and foremost. I am not getting on the mountaintop and giving a sermon. I am trying to make you laugh. And unfortunately we've seen the downside of that in the last twenty years or last decade certainly and now more people are like i just had to be completely obvious literal and i think chapelle was that inflection point for comedy where it was like. Are we going to continue to just be funny and just worry about being funny. Are we going to re about who is responding to our comedy and what it is saying. What is the message in. All that stuff and i think we've gone quite a bit in the direction of look. This is just what i mean. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm not criticizing that not criticizing being oblique. I'm not criticizing any of that. I'm just saying this is what we've chosen for better or worse. We are in a position in comedy where things are very clear and they have to be less. You offend someone. You hurt someone's feelings. You incite people to very negative shitty behavior and you look at a lot of comedians. That are on the the right side if the political spectrum and they are just as obvious as anybody else. Did you ever have horrible. 'cause and then he falls into that trap. You know as we know later. Like dave chappelle is not immune to that by any means because of his hall. Take on trans people. Yeah i was thinking about how i watched. I don't know if i watch us live but at minimum. I pry watched it on like hbo on demand. And i do think this is like we're getting towards the end of when specials were not things you watched on the internet and it's a small thing but like david is very interesting. Example of like comedies relationship to context in the context in which your audience is receiving it. And do they understand what you're saying and like the more famous you get the more likely you're going to have more people are laughing incorrectly. No matter who you are. Comedians don't like talking about it because they don't like telling their audience that they get the jokes wrong but it's not just like a lot of comedians don't like parts of their audience and i think david wasn't very acutely aware of that laughing incorrectly but the truth is like people are always laughing incorrectly. You can't fully have a person have your brain. Only you know exactly what you're saying. Exactly what you're saying. And once you're getting like chapelle show which a lot of people were a legally downloading and watching that way or watching at home and watching in the context of them and their friends and that's a different context than who was trying to create it for and then the internet explodes. Where it's like. There's so little context. You don't know if the joke is ironic or the joke is not ironic. Unless you know the person is if that's the case you need to tell people like i'm not racist now i'm gonna say this thing and i think people really hate being misunderstood like i think having talking comedian's enough it's like i feel like they are so desperately want to be heard and understood so badly that they do this crazy thing which is performed. Stand up every night and they for years while they're bad at it. They just do it but they need to be understood so badly then a starting understood and feel so nice and then they get more famous and then people don't understand them anymore and it feels terrible and i think dave we've seen it on dave's comedy that journey so viscerally because he's so sensitive to the audience. He's so good at speaking so sensitive the same thing that allows him to play this audience perfectly to laugh big clap when he wants them to big is the same reason why now you just can't get over the fact that people are don't laugh at his jokes the correct way which like. I'm always of the opinion of like. Look if you wanna do these jokes that i don't like that's fine. I don't have to be your audience. that's cool. I don't love it. When comedians feel like they need to use their stage. Time to complain about. It doesn't seem like very relevant to the audience. But i think this is like this lovely time where him doing good jokes to people who get it close enough or are open enough to be shaped by him. Which i think is probably what happened. A lot of young enough that like i didn't have an opinion about a lot of these issues which was obviously a lot of his resulting of certain privileges that i had but also like literally being a kid that he shaped how i did see it which is really a credit to how good it was. The privilege is definitely a big part of it. You know i'm biracial. So i had a certain level of privilege that people who grew up in a different way than i did didn't have and this was in a lot of ways my my window black culture and like how black people felt about certain things kim and chris rock certainly developed my idea of what blackness was but the people who were watching it were either so privileged that they didn't see the immediacy of those problems. The immediacy of police violence the immediacy of racism and uttering of people that they could laugh at it and it was this kind of conceptual. Funny notion.

"So he had like his own starring movie that he wrote and he still had not had a special yet and things happening in comedy. At the time you know this is a transition period seinfeld. The tv show ends in one thousand nine hundred chris rock's bigger and blacker comes out in nineteen ninety nine. George carlin is still around this time and the other big comedy. Special of the original kings of comedy comes out in two thousand where we all in the year two thousand with my parents. It tends of my comedy obsession. I knew of dave chapelle Him in professor at seen him in robin hood men in tights. So i was aware of him but this was the moment when he really became my favorite stand up comedian. And this is even though. I'm not going to be one hundred percent positive about the special. In retrospect at the time it was my favorite comedy special of all time. The funniest thing i've ever heard in my life and even today knowing all the punch lines and knowing the cadences in the rhythms of it so well i was still sucked in immediately by his energy and his way of doing things. This was chris. Rock was my favorite comedian before that he's also the comedian of the of the time period. Before it i think he's sort of by default. Everyone's very comedian. But that was a thing that i feel like i like by myself. This was the first special. Where like all my friends watched it half-baked i can't imagine i saw in the theaters. But i know. I watch like with my friends. They played in a comedy central a lot. And then when this came out. I have no idea when i started watching it. Or how but. I know like me and my friends would watch it. I know the parts that quote it like it has that it does feel so stylistically different than the comedians of the years. Before in so much as like you had chris rock in the nineties and then even up to ninety nine. He's like. I'm chris rock. You're gonna know exactly what i'm going to talk about. Here's the premise. I'm gonna drive it in. And then i'm gonna explain. Dave chappelle hasn't much more relaxed. Pace jokes are sneakier. And he's just so silly unlike Perfect at that time. When i first heard it i think that's what i loved about him. The most how gleefully silly he was. There's a gravity to. Chris rock the seriousness of purpose. Maybe not serious. Because he's still a comedian but serious in that he knows in the same way that when eddie murphy was at the height of his career as a up comedian eddie knew he was the biggest star in the world and when he came out on stage in those standup films that are so classic he came out with a certain swagger in a certain expectation of deference he was up top and you were kind of down below and he was already to you dave chapelle on the other hand he was no he does it. Do a bunch of crowd work and like pointed. People like make references to how they're dressed. He's still kind of like because he's not. There's no pretense of him being important or what. He's doing being lofty. Now you look at pellet twenty twenty twenty twenty one whatever this comes out you will see a drastic difference how he approaches himself as a comedic persona flash of being thrown back in two thousand with. How skinny is his voice. It's hilarious drastic. He just completely different guy. And you're like oh yeah. I forgot this was. This was the beginning. This is why we all liked him. First points i think so actually. I don't. i have no sense of how popular this was. Broadly compared to like what the schedule was. This was the basically the pilot episode of chapelle show in a lot of ways because it introduced the audience. The comedy audience to his brain in very unfiltered kind of way and i kept thinking during the special when i was watching it. How much his work has material at. That point was really just sketch material that he was doing standup as opposed to now where it really is. Dave chapelle being dave chapelle on stage and talking about his feelings and stuff and opening up in being more emotionally available. Yeah this stuff is like talking about being a hostage on a plane. We know that didn't happen talking about seeing baby on the street at three in the morning. We know that didn't happen. But we go with it because we're willing to exist in this in this fantasy world and it does feel like a sketch all of those moments. Those pieces of that special feel like sketches and. It isn't until the end of it where it starts to feel more grounded and realistic. And in my opinion less funny adjusted what is your experience with deja pellet this time or have you seen before two thousand. I was just starting middle school. So i was not like an. I went to an all girls middle school. This is just like not making the rotations around notre dame. Prep in baltimore maryland. So my introduction. Dave chapelle was the chapelle show a couple years after. But i'd have to say like it's very different from his standup in tone as you guys were saying but it felt familiar to me in the sense of like it felt like the chapelle show. It was great. I was totally enjoying it. It was so fun to like. Go back to. That era of him reminded me when i interviewed neal brennan now a few years ago and he picked a very bizarre joe. Chris to talk about is a stupid joke from half-baked they hate that movie. They both it's out. And i was like why and he's like. There's some jokes in there. You're like those are the same guys that created chapelle show and like you watch those. That's the same brain and it. You see some seeds of the guy we see now but it's like often. It's like the little sinuses before the joke starts or it's like techniques like now. He does the same thing which he tells long stories. That are probably also made up. I think he's like one of the great comedic liars and the history of comedy. And i don't say is a lot of comedy is like creating scenarios that if emotional truth but aren't necessarily literally true and this you see him like well clearly. These things are so false. And i don't know what the audience thinks but he's using the fact that people are going to take him for the word we're now he's sort of using the opposite way or making these grand statements based on like clearly made up stories that are emotionally true and either decide or not decide to sort of believe in it but it is fun to have him use that power so lightly he so captivating that he can do this long story. I'll believe that he was a terrorist attack. This like what really threw me off. I'm like this can't be real. Like i would have heard more about that. It's also such interesting rhetorical technique to be like. I wanted to explain how black people were devalued in society. How could i do that. I'll tell the story about. This made up time where i was the subject of a terrorist attack. So.

"Dave Chappelle. I found this interesting. Dave Chappelle, who obviously has a good relationship with the executives over there at Netflix. Met with them and ask them. Because of his deal to take down to remove Chappelle show from the library and Netflix said, sure took it down. Um, on, Dave said, quote. They they are CBS Viacom. They didn't have to pay me because I signed the contract. But is that right? I found out that these people were streaming my work and they never had to ask me or they never have to tell me perfectly legal because I signed the contract. But is that right? I didn't think so either, And that's why I like working for Netflix.

"Least. is a really bad time to make that mistake and I'm like is it's got numbers in and it's cops. Is he indeed Confusing Brooklyn nine nine hundred twenty one jump street. Nope, just googled IMDB. Ice Cube went with the first thing. Well Twenty one jump street I saw, but I question whether or not it was a family movie i. I needed a family movie. You found that Brooklyn. Thank. Mike I'm sure is listening at this and flatter you think he. He's part of a movie. So help me understand a as things continued to be fluid and I imagine a lot will change. Of whatever the plans are to get back to sports, but When I say. That reporters. It's being reported might have to stay for three and a half months at Disneyworld. I heard Stu gods and billy talking about where they would wanna stay at Disneyworld. They're going to be all sorts of weird things here that happen. We wanted to get to Disneyworld. We're close. we wanted to do the show from Orlando. Because we're right there and it would be fun to be near the playoffs. I don't want to be stuck at Disneyworld for three now. I started very exploratory conversations. The NBA people that seems so far away. Reach out to the MLS situation to see what's happening there i. don't even think the people broadcasting gotta go there, also covert tests or expensive stu gods help me understand something here because I heard Kevin Harlan. Harlan the other day that they are going to do some games broadcast by remote, and I think as many people learn during this pandemic of the inefficiencies in their own businesses. This is happening all over the place where people have realized over the last three months of reset WHOA. We were doing things wrong. I do believe we might be headed toward a place where broadcasters are no longer where the action is that people will come to realize that you can. Can Broadcast the game the way Buksh Ambi- is broadcasting the Games in South Korea that you don't actually have to be there, and you certainly don't have to have an army of broadcasters on site. Newspapers learned this the hard way. Newspapers used to have giant travel budgets, and then all of a sudden. They're like whoops. We shouldn't be going to all of these places never mind. We shouldn't be sending reporters all over the place. I mean I think we'll probably I. I agree with you that we are headed towards something like that. I don't know how extreme it's going to be I. Think there still value of having Mike Breen Jeff Van Gundy? Mark Jackson sitting courtside hearing. What's going on being able to speak with coach is being able to speak with people about what's going on in the huddle taught to the referees and having that courtside seats to be able to see the game properly I. still think there's a value. To broadcaster, is it the value of of the travel and expense budget? Knin comes with having to do these things. We've long been been there outside of the three major sports in this country if you're watching. Boxing or soccer or a new sport, a hell, even the Olympics many of those I would even say the vast majority of those especially with soccer or being done from a broom closet somewhere, and you're none the wiser. Do you need someone at the course? The Government Golf Tennis. I mean I think there was a pretty big company that had the rights that got embarrassed because the world feed went. went out on the World Cup, and then you realize Oh, crap. They're not there to his theory in theory. What's to God's at saying? There's value in having people courtside, so they can hear and see all of the action. But how often does that value translate into something? Being said that you didn't know because you were or weren't there. One of the things that NBA teams realized stugatz vary. As as newspapers started to collapse was wait a minute these courtside seats. Why are we giving them away for free to the media? Now I know as part of the broadcast arrangements. There are certain access that you're allowed because we pay a lot of money for those games to have our people on site involved in those game, but if you're talking about economy collapsing stuff if you're talking about Sadat. ESPN needs college football like they badly. Badly need college football to be on television or ESPN'S GONNA. Take a crater hit in terms of finances, and then when you're looking to cut costs. Where do you cut costs? Hey, the broadcasters don't need to be there for three months with us, paying for the hotel and for the meals and for everything else like it's an, it's an easy fix, even as it costs jobs, even as none of our peers want to be hearing. Hearing that it's an easy place to save money. The broadcast quality goes down a little bit, but look how much the whole thing's going to go down given. Then it's not going to have fans in the playoffs were watching. You're going to be different than any place. We've ever seen by sad. Just think it depends on the sport like I. Would Say College Football is one of those sports where there is a benefit to having. Having the broadcasters be there and also say the pre-game show that we do requires a lot of people to be on site with a lot of fans to also be on site. Make a of money off that pre-game, but it's got a lot of inefficiencies to in terms of cost. A lot of businesses are learning that they've been super inefficient with how it is. They've been spending. Because you know. Necessity is the mother of invention. Barring. I disagree. Can't be boring. When we sink into segment of whether or not, you've got was confusing ice cube with Terry. I mean I think it can when you're tossed commercials, necessity is the way you didn't know that when you decided on that the ending. You didn't know that that was going to be my last words. You thought India antisemitic was. I didn't know what your last words we're going to be, but I was bored. Very good well. Thanks, thanks Mike. Maybe you would have been less board if you'd help me a little more with the ice cubes segment. Back to him maybe! Maybe we made a mistake and back in the studios here I. Think we're all starting to get a little annoyed with each other again I have spent way too many portions of my life way too much time on trying to get the anger off of me back to someone else on this show. You're very good at..

Brooklyn nine nine with law and order STU GODS has been dumpster fire garbage today L.. O. L. I. Don't know I. Don't know what happened there, Kristie. Gets really mad at me. I just tell her I was trying to help with whatever and it usually works. He has so many pivots. Break I was getting engulfed with Dan. Ice Cube hasn't made family movies you. You're getting it wrong like Roy. What are you have here? I know exactly what happened on his IMDB page. The first thing that pops up is soundtrack. Not Actor writer or producer yet so Brooklyn. Nine used the song of his. Roy's exactly right, but that's what you do when you're trying to friend trying to help a friend out you do what you gotTa. Still Don't know what he did. He, read the Internet wrong. I noticed. There is no fine money up here. "John. Michie played many years in the NBA is one of the least interesting things about him. We enjoy talking to him about all sorts of things, so let's begin John and thank you for joining us. What do you do with the news that the NFL is now ready to? Commit. Two hundred fifty million dollars over the next ten years to social causes. So? I'm happy that they're going to spend some money. Spending money in lieu of actually changing is is pretty rich. I mean. How could you have any respect at all for calling Compaq and? and embrace this message wholeheartedly would be my take. says. You know what a what a what a truly magical Negro George Floyd must be. In, order for the NFL to suddenly change on a dime like that. None of the other deaths that happen on a daily weekly basis. Move them not not the dignified protest of one of their own. No, no, no, that caused constructive dismissal. But but somehow this is the moment i. it makes absolutely. No sense and is a disgraceful, the disgraceful show to me I and again send that money. Do it right now to all the right causes. And take no credit for it because they don't deserve any. And so, what do you do with for example same thing with Nascar and finally listening to their one black driver, and saying okay now we'll get rid of the confederate flag. This is nothing to do with that one black driver. They could give a damn about him. This is to do with a sensitivity in the public at large and a scrutiny from from television. Above when it finally gets back on television. This is I. Mean. When do we went to? We reward people. For doing something that was known to be terrible in the nineteen hundreds for for continuing that for another century, I mean we. We've known that that's what that flag stands for. Symbolism in America is deeply important. It's deeply important. In the United Kingdom to but. We've known that this is a flag that is not about anything, but a traitorous group, and that's a British person. Saying that it would be like having a British flag on a thing, he said even that would be less offensive now. Major you questioning the timing and sincerity on all this that would is that what I sense? You're doing here I. Think you picking up what I'm putting down? And listen, I will take it that good causes are aided by the guilt of rich white men. But what I will not have. Is that their misdeeds? They're consistent and ongoing misdeeds are somehow eradicated by this one act of largesse. Stu Gods is raising a finger in here like Joe. Namath I noticed through sincerity in there with timing, and you didn't just those important. You didn't listening Dan. Meech why were you? Why were you upset at economic advisor Larry Cudlow? What is it that he said that bothered you recently? I don't know how women was I. Upset with Larry Cudlow. I thought that I saw on twitter that you were bothered with the idea that he had said that. There is systemic race United States. Reminding you. The problem. In fact, I have taken I have taken to elective dropping the names of people. I hate out of my brain. I just think they shouldn't occupy my hard drive, and so I completely forgot, but now you said it I can see his ridiculous frame in a bad suit. Listen. The I. Why are we asking people like that about? Important, questions I I was on a panel the other day. On TV here in the UK where they were asking about the to meet a distance, and should we keep the two minutes like want the person next to me was a television personality. The person on the other side was just some bloke. And, it's like I work in public health, and even I think this is a conversation. We should leave to the scientists so the fact that he thinks he can talk about systemic racism and deny it equipped unequivocally when it's on a subject that's been studied for years and years, and is is one of those things that is mole. Round the accepted then climate change. It's just ridiculous. The boldness off it to dismiss a systemic prejudice on the basis of what you would prefer to be true, and what is more politically, correct line for that particular, individual disgusting. "A substantive change when you're talking about NASCAR removing the confederate flag the Boston red SOx volunteering that fenway park has been a place where you can hear last year seven racial slurs that they caught and now the NFL, an A. Galaxy player losing his job because of something his wife was doing on social media that qualified as hate speech, and in the middle of this what you have happening I don't know if you've noticed to. To God's, but Dominic Foxworth has taking a a real star turn here at the network where he's on all of the shows and part of the reason for that I, have to assume is because he gets placed in front of him, thing x, and his response is some version of Yeah Nice, do better. Yeah, Nice, do better, and so when the NFL gives two hundred and fifty million dollars over ten years. I understand your cynicism. Cynicism I understand when David `Iran right. Hey, you should use all that money to buy a really giant mirror like I get why it is that people would do that, but two hundred and fifty million dollars is a lot of money, even though they have a lot of money, twenty five million dollars, a year is something that can actually instigate positive change, but I also understand the people who say that's just what your Kapernick. That's. What's your pain over the next ten years? It's simply what you owe that dude. For everything that you have done for him peacefully protesting in your sport. I can see actually both sides of that when I I think the NFL isn't a bit of a No win position here. There is no amount of money they could have said. It's a billion dollars it's it's GonNa. Be met with cynicism because of the statement. They've been making for four years, not the same statement. They've been making for the last two weeks. I also understand why people have that reaction to it by by a mirror. Well, how is this productive? How someone supposed to get better like the Red Sox? Are we supposed to treat this statement by calling attention all the wrongs when they themselves are calling out their own wrong, but I understand why people don't want to let go why people still have something to say about something that scarred them while they're questioning the timing on it. That's what's that's what's happening. Why the red sox suddenly now admitting something that a lot of people have been saying for questioning timing. Off Long. Time! There are people say listen? These reports have been out there for years. Torii Hunter told that story on Golic and Wingo and it's not the first time he told that story I. Believe it is the first on the red. SOx have validated that story. No, but STUGATZ. The reason is obvious like there's no questioning the timing the reason the shift is in your streets, I know but people for whatever reason Dan are I know. It's obvious the reasons are promised. There's no straw man. If you think people are questioning the motives, he of the Red Sox the NFL. Who sent motives and timing? Those are not the same thing. No one's rushing the timing. No one we all know the timing. The timing and motives are tied together I. Mean They just are how you don't think people are questioning the timing of some of these David's? You don't think people are saying to the Red Sox. Why did you come out two years ago? Specifically, the thing that you do you arrive at a place and you question thing that has arrived in say people are questioning the timing. We all know in our streets as freedom feels like it's falling apart why it is. All of these people are doing this. We all know why NASCAR has now decided to say never mind about the confederate flag. We're all. All very well, aware of why this is happening. Why because the dollars are telling you that? Public opinion shifted on this and all of these corporations need to protect themselves I know it's happening. The segment in itself is a microcosm of the larger discussion. Scott's is a learning a lot. This is not the greatest time pursue God's to be the sports funny guy. He's learning. He's learning what to say. He's learning about other people's opinions and ways I'm listening. Yes, yes, so. Let's not jump down his neck. As has over here questioning timing when he means motives I mean he's an idiot savant, sometimes exactly and I didn't mean to include savant I. Just did that to be nice to well. Thank you, Michael. Can you get the straw man imaging here as do God's says people are questioning the timing because we could have not gone into this whole and just played the imaging that we have for circumstances like this. When Stugatz takes, an opinion is sort of in the smoke and a hard for anyone to touch and forms at and sculptured so that it becomes. People are saying. The Internet has spoken out on.

"A. Of you familiar with the decade and a half of Roy Bellamy's silent, STOIC, brooding work on this show. No that Roy Bellamy. Does not usually have a happy face faces happy when he is laughing at something that has happened around here, but otherwise it goes right back to resting miserable face and day. It is especially a miserable face because he was up till three o'clock in the morning as many of you were because. The comedian of not only our time, but I would argue the comedian of all time. Dave Chapelle released something. At one o'clock in the morning and one of the reasons I believe that he is the comedian of all time, not just. Of. Our time is because I have no idea if this thing is funny or not, I have no idea if it's poignant, I just know that I want to hear from him, and there is no other comedian that resonates like that that everyone has dined at trough for two weeks. Everyone has died at the content trough and this guy who does it his way. All the time releases something that's. That's already got a million views I don't even know Roy. Help me out here because I have not yet seen it. I just know that he released it. I know that it is a eight minutes and forty six seconds the meat of what he's doing because that's how long a police officer was on George Floyd's neck. You want to see it at one am now. That's the question he's just. Means releasing it at his time, and he will get to it. Who says whether it's One am? Today like what are you doing? What differences? It may be old? It doesn't matter when it comes out what he knows. We'll get around to it. Any knows that we want to hear from him because. His voice is one that echoes now I asked this question innocently because I really don't know, put it on the Pole Guillermo at Lebatardshow. Do People like Jerry? Seinfeld I know that his show was something that felt like it was for white people. It didn't have a lot of black characters. I don't know how many black people watched Jerry Seinfeld, but the reason that I asked the question is Dave Chapelle could not be the resonating echo were that he is, if white people didn't also like him, because they're too much of a buying public, and they keep Comedians, because you can be a comedian that succeeds with just a black audience, but it's hard to be. Best of all time comedian. If you don't also resonate with the other races, and Seinfeld is the other one I would put in this conversation if we were talking about comedian of our times but Roy. What can you tell me about what it is that he released? It seemed to me from what I read that he was apologizing for it. Not Quite being polished yet, because these guys spend weeks and months sort of on the sculpture of what it is that they're doing. Every word has a place meant to trigger the funny. What is it that you saw? Roy Was it funny? Was it heartbreaking both neither? well, I did the title of this particular set is eight forty six, as not. The length of the set length is actually thirty minutes. There's released by Netflix and this one is point. It's informative. It's not necessarily comedic, and it was done last week. So this is fresh and I think you'll get something out of it all right, so, but was it. It's not yet on Netflix corrected simply right now. A Youtube vehicle is it the whole thing that will be appearing on Netflix, or is it just a preview of what will appear on Netflix? Preview I think this. Is it I think this is important enough for Netflix. I don't think he's going to be on Netflix. Actually so here is part of what we were discussing a couple of weeks ago, when Kevin Hart went on Joe Rogan's podcast and said that he palpably envied the freedom. The Dave Chapelle had Kevin Hart. If you've seen that documentary on him, on Netflix has a lot of responsibilities, and he's very popular comic but his work has been sort of diluted by his omnipresence and the fact that you know. Know he has made movies that have had some success, but many people don't like them and so Kevin. Hart will never get to be because he's the popular guy who sells out football stadiums. He will never get to be the Chapelle like Richard, Pryor figure that runs on the edge of things and you know in his twenties after making one of the great comedic television shows of all time breaks free. People think he was going crazy. God's people thought going crazy because he walked away from fifty million dollars, and what was is he was in too many boardrooms where he felt like white people were laughing at black people because they didn't get sort of the layers of what he was doing. Which is black people laughing at the way? White people view black people like that's what he was doing, and he was in too many rooms where he's like. Wait a minute I. Don't like this this doesn't. Doesn't feel good. It doesn't feel right, and then he's just bought himself total freedom total freedom. He does whatever the bleep he wants. He says whatever the bleep he wants, and he is not tied to any corporate responsibilities signing Dave Chapelle. You know what you're getting. You're getting someone who lives and works on the edge and it's It's a bummer to me that even as this is poignant, it's a bummer to me that not even the greatest comic of our time. Who can find the funny? Can find the funny in what he's presently witnessing because he's too tired, he's tired after whatever it's been fifty years. He's fifty years of enduring what the black experience has been in America. He does it his way. Excuse me, he does. Things Howie wants them when he wants them with zero fear, which I'm certain, Mason, the envy of many in that industry, not just Kevin. Hart I mean most guys in that industry. Most people in any industry would like to be able to do it that way, but I think a lot of people would argue medium of a lifetime or nineties. Like. What is uh? Cigarette. Go. Have One. You smoke cigarettes I. Did have one I'm in my wife's car serious. My other guard is at work. I'm telling you right now. I'm putting my mascot. Smell.

Dave Chappelle Accepts Mark Twain Prize

"Good morning Dave Chapelle won the Mark Twain prize Mark Twain prize for American humor this from the Kennedy center and it took place I think was last night and then it will air January seventh on PBS so Dave Chapelle has a from the from the the most humble list of beginnings and certainly humble career beginnings has become institution he has changed how people look at comedy view comedy and certainly what he is doing now even far past the commentary that he was creating how to spell show I I have likened it to to to Lenny Bruce I I liken it to mort sol it is it is less go for the go for the laugh and more okay Tarses I I am convinced that what we see from days about what we saw from bird revelation was soft equanimity what we saw from sticks and stones is about Dave Chapelle going through catharsis I I don't know what the next thing brings I don't know if he's got more that he's got to put out there but I had so I
