"Last year ninety nine with the yankees. When you when your fourth ring you had a one thousand one hundred and twelve. Oh bs statistically this was your best year a full-time player like we're the mets. We were the star guys. Everybody looked to But then play. That i don't remem- maybe just my memory. I don't know why didn't you stop playing at once. Lorraine's if you'd stayed with the yankees for another year you you could have fifth ring and part of the subway series which you. You've been natural for being starved for both teams What what happened at that point. I maybe a missing something. What is a good point. Because i was suspended for baseball because i felt a drug with their time. So you know that was it. i would have guys. it's been suspended for a whole year. You know and i couldn't stay clean. I couldn't stay clean. Say my life you know and i it was just part of the addiction and i was in a vicious cycle for very long time and you know at one point. I just wanted to just hoping that my life would be over. No and i could get away from it and get out of that circle cycle. I mean. I circled but cycle of it. And you know whether until my my wife my wife today tracy. She came into my life and she helped me. She helped me improve my life and help become a man and helped me straighten my life out. Get on the right road and it was a long process but she hung in there with me and we just you know we came together and just live the different life you know and and i'm so grateful for her. I'm grateful for my mother because she. My mother was praying for me when i was lost in living. A heating live from my wife. Tracy was pulling me out of dope house when i was lost and broken nineteen years ago. And she's saying god has a plan for your life shen in our say god's lead me let me die. She said you're not that lucky. And she just pulled me in and bought me to a whole different place. In my life ended up being transformed and became a different person Today just a different way. And i'm i'm just thankful for you. Know the grace that god had given me in the piece That he has given me in my life and the things that i may do. Today are so important to me. Well it was a dumb question is not so good and sometimes i'm questions bring the best answers and really appreciate your time and your honesty. As far as i can see you haven't changed. A bit is still one of the nicest guys i ever covered. And i've really appreciated all these years and You know. I know you have regrets and you still have done things differently or better and i think. You're just a very introspective. And i think that's great that you can look back and say that not everybody can do that and You know realize things that could have been done better or differently. But as far as i can tell you that everything great so i appreciate your being with us. Darryl van tastic and Thank you so much. thank you dare. Well well thank you guys. Thank you for your time man. "And in having expectations that i had at such an early age and the pressure playing and performance and i just really thought it was based one sign up all of that you signed up to be a baseball player and i didn't realize it would be so much pressure to play and my mother was the most beautiful person that i've ever met in my life. She raised five of by herself. See what people don't understand. I didn't have a father in the home. you know. My father rejected us and he was alcoholic and he beat us and he laughed at us and say we never amount to nothing in you know. He came home and put out a shotgun. When i was fourteen years old. You'll kill the whole family and me and my brothers went into action and had not been for my mother. Getting us out of the house killed him that night. You know and i think most people don't all they see is you you put on a uniform and you should be excel because you have talent. They don't realize that my pain was deep. My pain led me to my greatness and my greatest would eventually lead me to my destructive behavior and it will play out in my life. You know my mother her points were. She was a good strong christian woman. Her points was leave the girls alone and stop drinking alcohol. That's what i should have listened to her I think every kid can look back on his life and say mom always tried to tell you what's right in what to do and make the right decisions and then it's really up to you to make those decisions see. I made the decision. I didn't listen to. I made a decision to live a heating lifestyle and chased women and use drugs and drink and amply baseball. I didn't realize how. I was guys. When i was playing when i was young and at the time of my career does days. Eighty four eighty five eighty six eighty seven those years aid. None of them. I didn't realize how good player i was. Because i was never focused on the fact how good of a player i was. I was focused on the fact that i just go out and play and we win and that's all that really matters and i think when you're young you don't really understand all that you think this is gonna last forever and you realize one day nothing lasts forever. Not even us they are you He plays pretty historic organizations. I mean obviously flavored match. Paper dodgers flavored yankees Is there a favorite. Was her favorite stop while they all were favor stopped. Always saying you know. la reno. I said thank you know towards not towards the dodgers. I'm born and raised in la. I grew up a dodger fan. Not people don't understand that i say personally. It was my biggest mistake from me to leave new york. You know at the time of my young career and the years. I was having playing in new york. It was a different atmosphere for me playing baseball. When you play in new york fans come early and they never leave until it's over and when you plan to new york and i would send a different of the fans when i was playing back in those days fans in la. They come late and they leave early. Because guess what. The town of l. a. Is all about the lakers. And there was about the dodgers now but it was all about the lakers back in the days when i were playing in. La and most people don't understand that and you know they they are great places for me l. a.'s home always will be home. Grown up there from crenshaw. I will always be dodger fan. I was always a dodger fan growing up but new york city. That is my home. I grew up in in a place where people may become a better player and they challenge you. They stretch you. They boo. And if you can't accept that you know that's that's part of it you know either. Either they don't make you better. Are they going to run out of town. And i tell you those those teams that. I play with in new york. In those days. I played in new york. Those fans made me a better. Yeah you really drive. I mean four rings. That's pretty good. Not too many players of when ma rings. It's interesting to talk about some of your key influences in your life. Your mother's sounds like a a wonderful woman in obviously debut was a big influence. And your mother gave you some good advice. And davey was a very instinctive Very smart guy. Good manager one thing. I thought that was interesting on the thirty for thirty special. He didn't just say i am. I don't worry about what guys do away from the field. He went as far as to say i. I didn't worry about guys did between innings. That's that save. The that seemed a little strong to me between as and i know you know. There's this legend of a you know picking women in the in the stands and you know is there actually time to meet women during the game and relate to women during the game and then go back on the field between innings. I would think it's time for that. But i mean is this is legend or was there. Actually this going on in the eighties were wild. I mean i was part of it but you know i'm not a ball player i don't know Did he mean that. Literally between innings there was stuff going on in the tunnel. I'm quite sure he did because he knew the of guys. He hadn't personality that they had characters. We all were characters and we had. We had these strong strong feelings about ourselves. And just doing anything and and that's just the way it was back. In those days there was the eighties. You know you guys. I see girls they liken you know between any they would at that you know maybe just do whatever haven't beat them in the clubhouse and do whatever you know it was just things you know just things that we all did. I did it. Am i proud of it. No it was just part of who we were. you know. It was just part of the eighty six to eighties. You know everything was wide open. Find different what no pressure she. I think the pressure that they have today is different than we have. We don't have social. We didn't have social media back bacteria they have all these social media outlets in different things. We all have people you know catch now. We have social media back in time that we were doing things we all would have been called. It would have been all over the internet in you know at a bit of different filling in. But we didn't have to worry about that we do one thing that we can get away with it and it happened. You know. it's just the way it was you see baseball players. You know. I think a lot of times take kind of denied themselves of you. Who they who they are. You know there was some great ones. You know really around the league that respected. Highly like tony. Gwynn your your dad. Tony gwen junior your father. He was well respected because he had principals. And everybody knew that carter was at. You know he. You guys certain guys that that that was that way. They didn't drink. Alcohol drank milk. they didn't get caught up into. You'll drug anything like that. But when you get caught up into taking the fed amis greenies and wire church and you plan a different person. You'd act a different way. And that's what it was for us in eighties. You couldn't get caught. Take greeny you know and you just you know. It's just the way so many guys so wired you know not only was a wire to play but they were wired looking at girls and all these other things that came along with this end. I was the same way. I was in that same boat with those guys. I mean i was one of those guys that was wired all the time and just did things and and you just kind of laughed about it and you ran back out on the field and you just play the game you know. That's part of what made this great documentary. Simply winning the world series helped but being out say colorful and Interesting certainly Added to it. I have one final thing. I want to ask a different topic. We'll get back to straight baseball You know i mentioned your stats the beginning one thirty eight. Opiates plus and eight sixty two. Opiates and then your.

Charles Barkley Calls out Rich Paul and Klutch Sports for Manipulating the NBA

"Clutches able to come up with a solution to this that gets darryl what he needs. That gets them to a place that he'd like to be in an doesn't adversely impact the sixers fortunes in the east. And you know helps other players along the way. I keep hearing like weird names. Cleveland might have an angle minnesota's by favorite getaway any of their assets the minnesota in sacramento ones. Have that kind of logic of of those Folks in those offices have history with daryl. So you know that there they can have conversations and there's absolutely no reason whatsoever for the sixers do a goddamn thing before training camp before the season starts is the best thing about this before the trade deadline. I mean i think that they're well positioned to just chill for a bit. Here's what barkley said on the mike mass analysis show. He's talked about clutch. Was you know how that group works. They try to trade their players to where they want to anthony davis. They had better deals from boston. Maybe even new york. They're like no he's gonna play with. Lebron is not gonna play. They just bullied. The league team. Got to stand up and say i paid your guy. He can't bully me a trade him and meet and have me take some trash back. I'm hoping somebody in the sixers organization got some stones barkley said we have not seen a team degan before and the quick thing you know. There's a persecution complex of them look for so amid this point the most powerful agent is always the least popular agent. David falk in the nineties was basically presented as the anti christ and blame for every bad thing that happened the league in the nineties. Scott boras same thing in baseball. Everybody had scott boras when you're the top agent near attached to the top guy and you're swinging elbows and get clydes what you want and do all that stuff. You're gonna take shit. I don't like some of the stuff they do at the same time. This is a referendum on them right. What how much power do they actually have. Because in this case philly has no trade.

NFL Wide Receiver Rankings 2021

"Football is right around the corner today. We're going through our consensus wide receiver. Reggie everybody likes wide receiver. Don't they wide receiver right gang. Judge go this is a big one guy. You can win your drafts with a lot of these wide. Receivers that we're about to talk about even if you drop them round one and round two and round three. Yes you certainly can. But we'll get to some. They can get much later. That are going to provide a lot of value in two thousand twenty one year. Yeah i can honestly say that. The one draft strategy to draft chinese. I've never taken a quarterback around one. And i have not taken a wide receiver in round one of any of my drought so far even super flex even supervise just getting. We just got some breaking news on sleeper that darryl henderson was injured in practice not return man would that be a huge injury to the rams funk season is funky town yeah davy jones. One of 'em jake fog or just a staffer. The woods cup higby season all adds to a man there on. Oh i hit. He's not gonna do me dirty two years in a row. That was a a when you're saying he is buy his jersey. If you finish for you. Oh i think i have to. That's too bad center role egg. I mean i. I don't own for that would be the economic shared the name first letter of the last name. I think it's a lot gusting at speaking injury. In preseason at all the things what are some preseason thoughts on wide receivers anything standing out or any injuries standing out anything. We should be on the lookout for as we get closer to the season. Starting all it's been kind of interesting like if you go to. Espn and just look. At the wide receivers. Half of them are listed as questionable. We're still a couple of weeks away from the season. So it's not overly alarming at this point but there are some injuries that are more alarming than others. That will get shortly. But let's start with our top wide. Receivers are we have devante adams tyreek hill stefan big calvin ridley the andrea hopkins and aj brown rounding out our top six. Which one of these guys do you wanna talk about. I think we could talk about devante. Adams tyreek hill. Just be as. I think i flip flop though is at least thirty times this off season gone back and forth between the two especially with rogers coming back. I don't wanna put davante adams at number one. You know contract year roger. They're going to go the big last dance. He's going to have all of the targets that he wants think he can get two hundred targets in a season. I don't but i think he's going to pace wide receivers when it comes to target. So i have devante adam just my number one. As well i think the touchdown potential. He is the favourite to lead the league in receiving touchdowns this year. Aaron rodgers coming back. That chemistry is as good as any quarterback wide receiver in the entire league. Yeah i had tyreek hill number one until aaron rodgers. I made it official that he was coming back and then davante adams shot right back up to number one. I have devante at number two tyreek at one. Like i said i flip flop all over but even as projections. I have devante adams at one hundred and sixty five targets. And i think that's conservative to be honest. I think it is still i. I got about one seventy five. Yeah i don't think he comes anywhere near two hundred I have team range. That one one sixty one seventy i. I also kind of a little bit worried. I think this offense could be worse than it was last year and cobb amari rounders are two factors that they did not have last year. That are legitimate receiving options. I do think that devante adam. I'm not gonna say this. I think he could actually Kind of disappoints fantasy owners this year. I'm not projecting it that way. But i see the path to it happening this year. Unlike in yourself.

"Today talking to the actor. Darryl stevens who of course played the title role not show noah's ark that show which aired between two thousand five and six showed black gay men as fully developed characters in a way that we really haven't seen since not in that quantity at least there are amazing examples on pose and other shows but noah's ark is he. I show built entirely around black gay men and of equal importance now. Fifteen sixteen years later. It remains the only show to ever do that. No others have come close to replicating. Its which i think needs to be said. We celebrate it as the first so today. Talk about that about how noah's.

"Darryl Latest catalog Feed report is out front through the numbers force. You bet, you know, the August USDA cattle on feed Report has July placements at 91.9% of last year Marketing's at 95.5% of last year, and that gives us an August one on feed total of 98.1% of last year, So these numbers are pretty close to expectations. Both replacements and marketing's are slightly below the average but within the range of estimates. And the trends, especially on the placement seemed to be suggesting tighter numbers head Darryl Yes, that's right. You know, we finally worked through the big numbers. You know, a little bit of cattle cycle history, So we peaked in 2019. That should have given us a peek in the feeder supplies in 2020 and coming through the feedlots. But because of the disruptions last year, we push that into the first half of this year, And so that's been part of the struggle and fed cattle markets in the first half of 2021. But we're through that now, and we are making progress. Uh, seasonally, But even when it rebuilds in the fall of the year, we won't rebuild to last year's level. So we're going to continue to see tightening numbers. Those tightening numbers have we've been anticipating those for a while and and with those tightening numbers are better prices. Absolutely. You know, the Fed cattle market has been kept all year because we did bunch of these cattle. And we've been up against the capacity constraint. And so you know, we haven't moved fed cattle prices much for the last 20 weeks or so. But we're really close to that. Now. I think General expectations are within the next week or 23 weeks. What To Expect When Attending MLB Spring Training Games This Year

"Gavin Newsom says baseball teams like the Dodgers and the Angels could open up their stadiums when the regular season starts next month. But some fans aren't waiting there, checking out the local clubs as they play spring training games in Arizona. If you're thinking of heading east for baseball fix during the pandemic, Kcrw's Darryl Sanson has some tips about what to expect. The first thing to know is that attendance is limited to 2300 people at spring training games, which means tickets may be hard to get. You should buy yours in advance if you don't want to risk being shut out. Tickets are being sold in pods of two or four and many seats are being zip tied off to ensure social distancing. Also tailgating. His band masks are required, and you won't be able to get an autograph from your favorite player. The only outside food and drink you can bring in this year is water and transactions at the stadium are cash lists, and here's another change. The games could be shorter to help teams better control their schedules during the pandemic. Until March. 13th managers can choose to play his fuse. Five innings. After that, all teams will have to play at least seven A total of 15 Major league teams play in Arizona's Cactus League during the spring, including all five clubs based in California.

Vaccine Access Code System To Address Inequity Used By Wealthy In Los Angeles

"Are ending up in the arms of people who are not yet eligible to receive shots. Made them wealthier folks in L. A in the Bay Area. State officials say they plan to do something about that with a new system for community based distribution of covert vaccines starting next week. KCRW's Darryl Saxman has a preview. Instead of giving out general appointment access codes to the roughly 1000 community groups that have partnered with the state. The codes will be individualized. What's been happening is the access codes are being shared via email, text or social media and reaching people who are not eligible yet because of their age or occupation. Many of those people have been showing up anyway and, in some cases, getting shots reserved for higher priority groups. Ryan Ferguson, with the governor's Office of Emergency Services says that in one instance, a large group of outsiders showed up at a predominantly Latino public housing complex in L. A for vaccinations being provided by a mobile unit. Switch to individual access codes comes as the state strives to prioritize vaccinating the most vulnerable, including low income Latino and black residents, who have been disproportionately hit by the pandemic as well as essential workers. For KCRW. I'm Darrell SAT spin. Meanwhile, Ventura County is expanding covert vaccine eligibility to include school

She resembles mostly her teenage self. An equestrian who showed jumped competitively while growing up in her hometown of santa barbara. California what i really wanted for my experience was to feel like okay. This is a natural thing that women are meant to do. She planned to deliver it a new york city hospital but then the realities of covert hit particularly sequestering here ninety minutes from manhattan and the limits on numbers in the delivery room which would preclude yolanda and bella from being present. Then she and malik watched the two thousand eight documentary the business of being born which is critical of medical interventions and depicts a successful home birth. We both looked at each other. And we're like. I think that's the call. Gd says they placed a blow up bath in their bedroom and sent their three cats and border collie away when the midwife expressed concern that the sphinx and maine coon felines might puncture the tub with their claws. Malik ask gee-gee what music she wanted to hear and she surprised him by requesting the audio of favourite children's novel the indian in the cupboard. He downloaded the film because it was one of his favorites too and they spent the early hours of labor watching it together. That's something we'd never talked about. But in that moment we discovered we both loved. Gd says bash family. She then tells me that malik. The former one direction star turned solo artist. But motherhood is a new phase and it will be up to g g to decide whether it belongs on the silhouettes of social media. I think she wants to be real. Online's as bella twenty four by phone from new york city but until her child wants to be in the spotlight and can make the decision herself. She doesn't want to put her in that position. Bela who splits her. Time between her. Soho loft and the farm and facetime with her niece and sister every morning says she already enjoys reading books. But one determined to lead more secluded less peripatetic life. I always want to be here fulltime. She tells me. I love the city but this is where i'm happiest furious. Speculation and countless think pieces have attended the question of what this time will mean. Will we slow down flee cities for less frenzied. More mindful life in many ways. That means we're certain people fall in the vaccination line is changing, including some essential workers. Now, several groups are desperately trying to maintain their priority status as KCRW's Darryl Saxman reports. "So let's talk about. Because i said this out about you. Being that super expert at help businesses grow. So i wanted to warn dokie different angles. I wanted to ask what gets you excited. Have businesses grow. Yeah and get excited. When you walk into a business you can usually tell what kind of business you're walking into either your walking into business where there's growth which means people are excited. They're energetic you can just feel it inside a business whereas if you go inside businesses not growing you can feel that vibe as well and i get excited about going into businesses. That are growing. Because i know that what's going on. There is two things first of all they're creating meaningful jobs and right now you know especially right. Now we need to create more meaningful work in company grows able to create meaningful jobs. And the thing. I'm most passionate about is nonprofits. I serve on the board of of two different nonprofits and i've noticed people that moved the needle. The most our businesses business leaders that are generous. And so i know when. I'm going into a growing business that the fruit of that business is not just meaningful jobs. It's also the giving that happens back into the community and in all of that adds up to make the world a better place so when it comes to growing revenue i get really excited about helping companies grow because the impact. Those organizations are able to have on the world and write ray girl what you shared. Is your excitement conferencing the impact. And i think that was great wisdom immediately at the beginning itself. Show it's not the revenue generated for the brands. You work with would how the trickles to other nonprofits and other areas in brexit community and the dubs. I really think to do it is it is and you know if you look at at where we are right now. Who's going to move. You know in so many ways. We're facing unprecedented challenges in our world and our countries who is going to solve their problems. What's going to solve those problems. It's businesses driving forward in helping nonprofits come along Behind them and all of that we're going to create a better world back. Gets me excited. Nunca a bitter and now before we go to the beker. The i want to come to nonprofits few cents. I wanted to go to the revenue growth. The core promise of your book. I just want to understand. What the real uniqueness what you've done to help. Businesses accelerate the revenue growth in this key areas that you held businesses focused to achieve this. So what things that you can share. The secrets for garros accelerated revenue growth. Well yeah thank you for asking either way and and i you know there are. There are several secrets. I wanna start with two today. That are are really really critical. When it comes to growing your company the first has to do with goal setting and when it comes to setting revenue growth goals were in a challenging time right now because a lot of conservative companies i found set goals based on what they've done historically may say well we've experienced this percentage of growth over the last three years so our goal next year is going to be that same number again ten percent whatever that number is however. That's real challenge. Right now is for businesses. Some businesses obviously have seen a sharp decline. So don't have a trend to work on their. That's very useful. Other businesses are exploding. They've had you know whole new areas of opportunity open in front of them in and so in either case. How do you set growth goals. What i found is the most powerful way to set realistic growth goals. I call them aggressive but realistic goals is to look to drivers of revenue growth. And if you oil it all down. I believe there are really only two ways to grow a company fundamentally you either get more net new clients or and or you grow your revenue per client and when both of those things happen at the same time arjun exciting things begin to unfold If you can accelerate your you can accelerate your growth if you can show reasonable growth in number of clients and simultaneously show reasonable growth in your revenue per client. When you add those two things up You see some really exciting results. I call it the law of exponential revenue growth for example a company that grows their number of clients by twelve percent. Simultaneously grows their revenue per client by twelve percent. They're actually able to double their revenue in just about thirty six months. Which now. I've got some things. I can really set some goals around. Not just setting the overall revenue goal setting the goal in terms of number of clients revenue per client. That's the first thing i would say is think about your revenue. Not just in terms that bottom line numb our top line number but in terms of what are the two factors that drive it. And how can we get more clients in selma current clients. And this is you make it so simple to me. Back to my beginning of my career in the b. to seaworld i remember What listen i losses. Amazing human being. She started as an admin and then she grasped the business and she learned. Explain to me the way you are explaining restaurants fix restaurants to convey simple vase. He said your sales depends on. How many guys you open the cash register how much you put in every time. Not that smart arjun. You could make thousand dollars. Yes one time putting thousand in a thousand times putting one in or something in between and based on that your strategy can be there. So i really love the simplicity as you start going through so as you have come here i just have to ask this question as a friend to understand how daryl get here like was. He warned that smart or not. Get in this journey. Get here well. the. I don't know that was a a that that smarter that i was certainly born this smart but but i did I think like a lot of us Most of what i've learned was has been in the university of hard knocks along the way. And i spent I've had a unique perspectives in that. I've spent half my career in sales in half of my career in marketing For the first twelve years of my career. I was in b. two b. technology sales sales management And then ended up ultimately starting a sales training company in the space. When i started that sales training company the fun part of my story was my very first came to me and said hey darryl everything you taught. Her team is fantastic. However our website doesn't say anything about it do you build websites and of course being my first client. The answer was yes sir. We build websites at actually built several for nonprofits. But it put me now and this was seventeen years ago when this happened over the seventeen years of had the unique perspective of having one foot in the sales world doing sales training consulting with companies about sales even helping some fortune five hundred companies build sales. Training programs have been very involved in that mad at the same time. I've also been on. This journey in the digital marketing space. So that first website turned into managing digital marketing for companies across north america and australia search engine optimization social media management inbound marketing now account based marketing. And so all of it. You know what i noticed was number one. There wasn't a lot of alignment in companies between sales and marketing. In fact i think that's an understatement. He knows it's kind of like your car. When you're driving your car in its non-aligned one wheels pulling the left. The other wheels pulling to the right and the poor driver is just trying to get to work. down the freeway Not only is. They're not allowed of alignment really. There wasn't even a common language between the two sales You know has their focus Marketing has their focus and there are a lot of finger pointing back and forth and where the lights came on for me. Arjun was when i had realization. That was actually getting ready to speak at a conference And had a realization. As i looked out over that that room of marketing professionals sales leaders in business owners realize this isn't about sales. It isn't about marketing. Those are just means to an end. What's the end. The end is revenue growth. And so when we started. When i started looking at things that way everything on this journey that i'd been on in in the sales world in the marketing world started to come into focus and out of that is where the revenue growth engine model emerged.

"Of how dire the medical crisis has become in L, a county. Paramedics are being advised to reduce their use of oxygen and to refrain from transporting patients who have virtually no chance of survival. The measures are being implemented to allow medical workers to focus on patients with a better chance of being saved. KCRW's Darryl sentiment has the details. This new directive from L. A county's Emergency Medical services agency says that paramedic should not transfer patients who have experienced cardiac arrest. Unless they can be revived at the scene. In normal times, ambulance crews would take those people to the hospital in the slim hope that they could be resuscitated. In another memo, the agency said that ambulance crew should only administer bottled oxygen to patients whose oxygen saturation levels fall below 90%. That reflects both the regional oxygen shortage and equipment problems that have limited oxygen delivery. It's some hospitals. The Army Corps of Engineers has sent crews to address those issues at several older hospitals in L. A county. Meanwhile, officials have devised a plan to shorten hours long wait times for ambulance crews who arrived with patients at hospitals that are filled up there, setting up new tent like receiving spaces outside of emergency rooms to accept patients. Orange County jails must reduce inmate population after appeals court rejects sheriff

"Hundreds of inmates in Orange County Jail's could soon be released because of covert. An appeals court has ordered Sheriff Don Barnes to submit a plan by tomorrow to reduce the inmate population due to the pandemic case. Italy's Darryl Saxman has the latest on this ongoing battle between the sheriff and the American Civil Liberties Union. Sheriff Barnes had appealed a lower court ruling ordering him to reduce the jail population by half to address the spread of covert 19 behind bars. But he didn't get any relief in the state appeals court. A divided three judge panel rejected his bid to suspend the initial ruling. The appeals court did not order Barnes to immediately release inmates. But it said he must produce a plan by tomorrow, spelling out how he would do that. It's the latest twist in the lawsuit brought by the A C L U that accuses the sheriff. Of ignoring health risks facing people locked up during the pandemic. More than 1200 OC inmates have been infected since March and one has died.

"We've done everything. We can we we we fought as hard as we possibly could, and we exercise every option and and went down every avenue we could to save it. So so yeah, I think in terms of our relationship, it's is constantly changing and we're just always growing and trying to figure out ways to work with each other the best that we can to make a great life so I think we were we always expect. Change and we always expect to finish our goals that we set trae like Darryl said whether they come out the way that they're supposed to or they come out as a big fat floppy our always there for each other to make sure that we see see it through to the end. How now how has the five love languages plan your relationship with? It's funny when so I think it was almost two years ago year and a half ago To three yeah. I had taken it and had sent it to Daryl and at the time I think he just kind of he wasn't really into it but he took it for me because he loves me and and He's a good husband and we actually retook it here a couple of months ago we we retook it and our own podcast on it, and it was really interesting to see how much we've both changed individually over that period of time to what our new languages were and I like it because it just kind of reconfirms. How how do like things done for for ourselves and and it makes a little bit easier Daryl knows to tell me I'm pretty dock os pretty much. It was a different thing for me..

"Well I would have to. We'd have to go in a way back machine Take a time machine capsule. Can we can we? Can we do that? Okay I my my one regret You know I I'm a fan boy but I'm not somebody who has to get autographs and there's nothing against that but I just. I admire their work a lot of work but one person that I regret never meeting in my life was Jack Kirby and When I was probably nineteen or twenty He had come to Chicago before he passed away. He passed away a few years. Later and I just that's something that really has always bothered me. I just wanted to shake his hand and tell him and thank him for everything I wasn't I I can. I can honestly tell you. I wasn't Jack Kirby Before Jack. Ruby was cool. Okay I love Jack Kirby when I was seven years old okay and it never stopped. You know. I always loved Jack Kirby it's not. This is not something that. Oh you know Oh. These marvel movies are real popular. Who created this Jet Kirby Own Jack? Kirby's cool no I've loved Jack Kirby for over forty years hipster you were into. Oh that's it that's the best way to put it. Yeah well everybody was else was into and I you know and I love John. Burn George Press. I love Michael. Golden all those guys from the eighties. I Love Them. They're they're the I'd also mind but while everybody was into that. Nobody really like Jack Kirby you know. And here I was going through quarterbacks sins command e and internal and Omega. Can you know all that stuff so my convention would would be to meet you know? Kirby Gil Kane's you know Steve. The coaches passed away A few years ago Giambra SHAMMA Several years ago I got to see John. Ramada talk at San Diego about ten twelve years ago when my kids were born of my friends and I went to San Diego and that was just I was my my buddy. Kevin told me he said you know. You're I don't know if you realize it but you're missing up you're tearing up and I didn't have to meet them really. They have to shake his hand but just to hear him talk. Yeah Russo Humble. He was so humble and you so grateful for the life he had and for the fans in for being in this industry in before it was cool you know to be an industry so I got to hear him talk. Can I got and thank God? He got the daren cooked talk before he passed away. In Cook was on a jet panel with are you Mark Levin. The Kemp says there's this guy market. He was assistant curb years ago but he does. He does he's Kirby panels Mar Every every year and we got to hear Darwin talk and once again. I started cheering up but my buddies cheering up again. I go because Darwin just off. Don was talking about a couple. Someone had asked them. What was your favorite Jack Kirby Comics and he brought up a commanding story that I was familiar with and he started tearing up because it touched him and that same story touched me so there was a connection there. So it's just it's you know These guys aren't guys who put comics in a bag and you know we're we're investing They read them. They meant something to them Science getting off topic here but I also got see cook. It got to see Ramada. You know those old old time guys though Curbs on the top though for sure. Yeah Yeah I get that so do you. I know you. Do you really prolific tons of our when you go there. Do you ever do commissions for people you know Whereas trying to do during the pandemic I I don't mind doing commissions just have such a limited time And I kind of getting a sticky situation where I I hate to say no to somebody you know because if somebody asks you to do commission that means they really like your work and I really really appreciate it when I go to conventions the only time I get to see people who appreciate my work the stuff that I do from a job maybe five or six people see it. The that's it for corporate. You know nobody gets my work so I I'm getting better at saying no to people not because I don't want to but because I don't have the time to do something exactly I'm all or nothing if I if I do a commission for you. I wanted to look as good as something that I have that I'm selling convention because that's why you're buying it so it's funny that you mention it because I'm trying to catch up on some commissions from people that I've said yes to a year or six months ago too but I'm actively telling people. I'm sorry I can't do them because of my day job and then like you said if you if you ever see my booth I got a ton of stuff tons because you've only got now. He's moving into other things. Where honestly here's another That's Kinda run out of time here but that's something I recommend the people to do is if a lot. There's a lot of good out there who don't know what you know. What should I do? Get yourself checklist. I started doing buttons rob. You've seen my button of course and you. You make a checklist. And at some point there's going to be an endpoint. Then I you I was doing prince but I did a checklist and my goal was when you comic Book Convention to me. You WanNA cover every square inch of that table because you're paying a lot of money for that convention so for the past four or five years I've that's all I've been doing is covering the table and as you said like a facebook. You've probably seen some different stuff for me. Because that's done now. My buttons in my prints are done. I might do some more but now you I wanted to comics. You know so I got some got an. I got a nice secret project on the back burner that I'm working on some really tangible that people and that's that's the next thing but if you're trying to three or four things and rob you know in life you can't do the three four or five things half ass and get anything done you know. Make yourself list focus on. This is what I'm going to get done. And if it takes you six months or year or two years at least you got it done right then. The next one went. It's an accomplishment. So that's I mean that's accomplishment is doing is doing storytelling join comics storytelling. That's that's what I'm getting into now. So where's the best place for people to check out your work You could check out my I. I HAVEN'T FC Shop. We check out my work and buy my work. It's If you go to at see my shop is darrel. Young Design D. A. R. Y. L. Young Design your design Or you know what I'M A. I'm a low pressure guy. I don't I'm not always trying to make a sale. I'd rather be be friendly with somebody. "Chance to I have favorites record. But just getting everybody. I've ever wanted on a podcast on this. Show people that I really want you to become aware of Darryl Young Daryl. Welcome to Shea thank you. Thanks for having me. It's a real honor Feel free to have me on your show. I really appreciate it. Thank you anyone who's been to a Chicago Com especially they're GonNa Know Daryl's work you. You should website and look at it as soon as you see it. You will absolutely recognize what Darrell has gone on. And it's just fantastic. Daryl can you? Can you tell people about yourself? Tell them about your background a little bit. Sure I'd be happy to I grew up in the seventies and the eighties. So I have a real affinity and love for comics cartoons and toys of that era seventies and the eighties I went to Columbia College A little later in life probably like mid in my mid twenties went to Columbia College In Chicago after they went right to work at a an animation studio in Chicago called Calabash animation so I was in a traditional animator about nine years We worked on commercials. That was ninety. Percent of our business was General Mills tricks. Lucky charms stuff like that. I was very lucky to learn About hand-drawn animation so that's my passion drawn hand-drawn that Computer Three D. I'm a Tutti Guy After doing that for about nine years live out in the suburbs of Chicago. Suburbs and I was commuting a minimum of two three hours a day and An opportunity arose They're a place was looking for Toy Designers for McDonald's happy meals and A friend of mine Childhood friend his name is Kevin Barber. Did I grew up with? We're still best friends to this day. Thirty years later told me about the job. And he's there There's this place called the marketing store about two miles from your house. Mike what and I had kids coming and I see my commute. Who's not not happy commute? I really liked what I did. I love the people I worked with but I applied for that very fortunate to get in and once again I was very fortunate to learn How TO DO Toy Design and I did that for about a year and a half and an opportunity arose while I was working there to do one better to work from home so I worked for a place called index promotions and been working there for about eleven and a half years Doing the same kind of thing doing We do toys for Burger King We do some cereal toys. We do promotions for sporting events I worked on metlife. Snoopy plush designs for many years did many many of those so So but doing twenty nine for about about thirteen years ago. always My passion though my love like a lot of artists who have who are fortunate to get jobs in airfield you know we. We always have a love for something else. And My love is for going back to the whole you know comics cartoons toys You Know Action Figure Shogun warriors all that. Kinda stuff and I had a couple of friends. twin sisters named Sarah and Catherine Saturn. They worked with the show soon. Because we're we're friends with them. I highly recommend A. Yeah getting them on the show. A great very talented individuals I worked with them and they were starting to do conventions in the Chicago area and They knew I love. I was a geek deep down and I mean a good way and So this a hey you know. Once she started doing conventions. Why don't you just give it a try? Give it a try and I tried it Five years ago I think to to wherever five years ago was I did a C. to easy to And I've been doing it for the past five years so I only do shows in Chicago See to have done wizard world a couple years. I do Show and Share Ville Indiana called Northwest Indiana. Comecon sure It's it's a small show but it's it's a great show. Very friendly people put together. Brian Kelly So I've been kind of doing this for five years On weekends and during time off and My my style is Old School Since this is something that I like to do. I'm not trying to be like the latest greatest. Whoever the hottest is a lot of editors will whoever that they had artists were that trend is. That's what they're looking for. I would imagine but I don't really care about that. So my stuff looks like something probably like out of a seventies or eighties. Comic Book And I didn't know how people were going to react to that Quite frankly you know having worked in the studio Situation where you're working for. You know I I do toys you know like for you know Marvel Disney You know these big corporate people You know Cubs sox blackhawks on stuff like that. You kind of out of touch with what people like so I my recommendation. I honestly for anybody you thinking about getting into doing conventions or or shows or whatever is do you like so I I just you know this is what I like. This is what like to dry. You Know I love beloved Jack Kirby Steve Dicko a love Jonah Selbe Shamma Like the Mike CanNot Shogun Warriors All those sound other barbarian so I started drawing like that and to my surprise my pleasant surprise was got a got a great reaction from it. Like you know Most people in my age group. You know probably guys in their forties or fifties. Wow Wow it just makes me feel so good and then we we talk for about ten fifteen minutes about the toys that we had. And that's and that's a great feeling but something that I wasn't expecting that I really love is Guys and girls in their twenties younger people. Love that retro. Look I love that Retro Style? Oh we got the DOT pattern. Oh you know look just like Jack Kirby and I'm like Oh my God you know. I didn't know that there was an audience out there. The other and you're so it's funny because it is referral but it looks really fresh. Looks really cool. So thank you think you'd be from the very beginning and I do all that Richard stuff I mean you mentioned microns. I love all. That stuff doesn't look. It doesn't look like a rip off distinctly yours and it's really cool. I remember thinking that we found you was Was walking around with my friend. Chris and I think we ended up ogling your booth for about a half hour time for Half Hour C. Two is pretty tough and we. We couldn't leave and we were just like. Oh look at this. It's amazing we loved it so then that's why I say anyone who goes to like wizard world or see tweet in Chicago if they walk round artist Selah. They're going to have walked around by booth and they're going to know exactly. What is I'm talking to? 'cause it's it's really distinct but it's super cool. Thank you I appreciate that. I think you know Any artist who is Has INFLUENCES WHO? Who or who is loving something? They're they're going to bring something else to the table unless they're tracing it in Photoshop which I see a lot of that conventions due to but you gotta bring yourself you gotta you gotTa bring yourself to to the to the work so I appreciate the and it's nice to because that is something I hear from people is that I think maybe that's why the younger people might like. It is that It reminds him something maybe their dad liked. But it's also something because I like animation. Maybe that's what I'm bringing to I. I don't know you know but I I really appreciate feedback you know. And I'm sure that's what they're reacting to. It's it's cool. Thank you so okay. If this was your dream convention who would you be most excited.

"It I'm gonna take this question is the reason I ha I wanted Darryl hold on I have been thinking about discussing this for the past but she month and I decided against it because I didn't want to call attention to this do you realize how much by the way that limits me when the show was young and didn't have that big an audience I can talk about anything without fear that it was going to call attention to it and make it even more popular well now since I am so famous a household name in all four corners of the world but whatever I talk about it like if I pick something out and I don't like and start focusing on all I'm doing is creating curiosity about it causing people to check it out which is the exact opposite of what I want to happen so all I have to decide not to talk about it so Darryl calls what would happen if the Soviet Union had won the call what what there's a television show out there the tentacles of premise in the same way what if the Soviets had beaten us to the moon and I started to watch the show and I had to turn it off in the second episode because it's nothing but a left wing political screech vehicle I don't even want to describe it in great detail because all it's going to do is make you want to find out what it is you're going to watch it and it'll defeat the whole purpose here my criticizing it but it's another one of these America's socks we could have been so much better if the Soviets beat us to the moon our space program would have been so much better than it was okay thinks this way thanks this way and of course I'm right as I as I watch tech blog media critics they love their show and you know why because it's all about left wing identity politics you know why the Soviets beat us to the morning because it was nothing but white men in charge of the space program in the show white men were evil and rotten and it'll let women do anything Hey let African Americans do anything and then this show the Soviets beat us and humiliate us an embarrassing what is the purpose of this and these guys love the show because it is women who finally make it to the moon when the United States was a much more fair and much more Jobst in much more open society and it's all friction all it is is a vehicle to be hyper critical in the identity politics fashion of the American left now I know some of you know the show I'm talking about others what is it right what is we want to know I'm not gonna tell you find it on your own it's gonna be hard now the others Google search two words I mention and it'll tell you that I had to turn it off but many of these critics on the left that show better sure on this network and I just so what would happen if the Soviets had won the Cold War will Amazon has a show called man in the high castle what would happen if Hitler had won World War two I tried to watch the show well the same as me I couldn't get past the first episode of it even if I even understood the premise and I couldn't get through the first episode yeah Hey what if scenario I've often have aids saying yes is for children and what if's are for infants what if the Soviets and one Michael but they didn't okay so we can imagine what would the United States be like had the Soviets one and had taken control and we had become a communist nation well you wouldn't want any part of it and the first people that would have been imprisoned are the very leftist journalists and advocates who think they would be most favored nation status of the Soviet leaders are communist leaders but I mean America would really not be what it is if if that it happened but you see fox there was no way that was going to happen the Soviet Union could I look for talking about this over the week was somebody was a Soviet Union was a massive cultural power only it wasn't the Soviet Union was not a competing massive cultural power house it was a third world nation with a first world military it never competed with us culturally and that's just that's that's just propaganda monk I just saw the clock I know I got a text choosing.
