Danica Patrick on Creating Goals That Last

"Patrick is one of the most recognizable professional female athletes in the world. She succeeded in the male dominated. Industry of professional motor. Sports broke the record for the most top ten finishes of any female in the NASCAR. Actually she almost has too many first female to titles to count. She's been named Time's one hundred. Most influential people list appeared in fourteen Super Bowl ads and grace the cover of sports illustrated. She may have retired from racing. But it's far from slowing down. Danika is also a winemaker clothing designer author and most recently a podcast host. We are so excited to have you Danika. Welcome to the couch. Thanks I'm on a chair. Technically you're we are on the couch. You're on the chair to the chair. Dang it okay edit it is take that as a lawyer would say so they ride it for us to talk to you one of the most celebrated drivers of all time because you were talking to people that are the worst drivers of all time so it just feels like this is a big moment for us. Yeah do you guys have cars. No I had to get better at driving licences which is scary that we were given honestly. I remember when I got my license. I got my license. The day I turned sixteen. You can take classes in school drivers identifiable or or drive right as I believe it was called when I was growing up which is out of school so that you can time it right to get it on your birthday as opposed to waiting till the end of the semester stor anyway so I get my license and I think that I scared my driving instructor because I usually didn't slow down until the car in front mm-hmm backed up as in like I saw tail lights but until they are actually closing the distance between my front bumper and his rear bumper. I didn't break and I freaked him out. Okay I want to get into your background. Just Skim your resume for us. I grew up in Northern Illinois. I was actually born in Wisconsin. Born in beloit late Wisconsin grew up in south boy and I started racing. Go karts when I was ten. My Mom and dad met on a blind date at a race. Some like my mom has been going to the racetrack and my dad has been racing racing since he was a kid. I came along not far after My parents Probably I think they got married in nineteen eighty. There were twenty one. I came along about twenty two years old old and then I started racing at ten and at sixteen I moved to England lived there for three years racing. I left highschool my junior year and got my ged. My good enough diploma And at that point in time thought man I better make this racing thing work and came back to the states. Didn't have a job for a couple of years. But then got taken in by Bobby Ray Hall Hall. Who is a guy who used to race indy cars and had an Indycar team and he started a lower level team for me and that went well and then two years of that and I was racing? Indy cars ours and then I did any cars for seven years and then I RACE NASCAR. For about seven years. There was a little overlap in them but I did each of them for about that long and retired tired in two thousand eighteen super easy. So that's great. I WanNa talk about all this. I have so many questions for you before we kind of dive into how a passion and a hobby became not only your career but really a historic moment for female athletes. What is not on in your wicked pedia or website that we should know about you? I don't know what's on my wikipedia at one point in time on my wikipedia. I went to college. So that's sure as Hell L. Notch as I only have. Ged Did you ever think about going to college. Now Well when I was a kid when I was ten when I started racing I thought I would go to college for engineering so I could learn how to work on my car Because I want to be a race car driver but that was ten and then probably by eleven. I stopped thinking about that. You you had other things now. What do you consider your driving force Pun intended my dreams? I'm just kind of a dreamer so I like to do things. At their furthest extent goals that go beyond something. I think it's important to have goals that. Go beyond the obvious What's the pride of the simplest example is my winery so I make a wine? The name of the wine is SOM- NEOM which mainstream in Latin and if my goal Oh was to make money which I haven't done yet and it's been ten years I would have sold it a long time ago right because that's dumb business but my the goal is not to make money. I believe it will when I- -CCOMPLISH my other goal which is to help people come together from wine To to share and put their phones away and connect like we just don't do so well anymore To go to the valley and Experience Napa Valley and experience since how wonderful it is to just be nature and understand the farming and understand the details of everything the romance of popping the Cork like just the whole thing so so I want to share. That experience helped people. Just feel that. And that's what made me fall in love with it and why I wanted to winery. So that's really my ultimate goal. If it my goal was to make money I would have sold it right so you know. Just have a goal that goes beyond. Let's say another example be fitness if my goal was to lose weight well. What do you do once you've done that? My goal is is to challenge my mind so it keeps me going back into the gym to make up new workout. See what else I can do. See how far or I can push myself Create new challenges new goals like I love the mental challenge of it but if my goal was to be fit well I'm fit now what you're done done. It's like weight. Loss with eating. My goal is to feel good so if my goal is just to lose weight through eating and I do that. Then what you'll never not wanna feel-good I'd eat to feel good. That never ends so. It's about creating a goal that goes beyond something either obvious or more

"Of people not even anything about who you are the person, 'cause they don't know you're just like an avatar on the screen. Yes. Yes. Absolutely. I think the the the biggest thing for me. And you look at go back to when danika Patrick came on the scene. You know NASCAR. It's a. Blamed NASCAR a little bit. It's they, they throw it at you constantly constantly constantly and, and circumstances, a little different between danika but, you know, we like we go back to the equipment side of things. And they're like, oh checkout. Wallace weekend next biggest thing coming up, and, and we run twenty fifth and then you go back next week. And hey, check out walls. You know, he's this isn't that run twentieth. And it's like okay. People want winners. You know, people, you know, you talk about somebody, you know, they're doing something big, not, not somebody this, and then and then that turns in all they're only doing it because he's black. And so it's like here we go. Now, you know it. So I kinda blamed NASCAR for, you know, it's like let me, let me create my own flame. You know, I don't need you guys to, you know ignite it for me. I can I can get it going. We're going to have some big moment. So it'd be interesting to see how it all, you know, shook out from from day one, if we didn't have that kind of. City. But then again, if we didn't would I be here today? So it's kind of a catch twenty two but but it's just a fine line at all. Yeah, I guess there's also kind of tricky for them, because it they are doing this in part because you're black, right. And they have diversity initiatives that they look they got brands on cars trying to sell stuff and they would've meaning eyeballs. Unless they don't wanna agree to. Bella yellow to get out here. They would have pitch this stuff. But I guess it does put you in a trick bag in that sense in that what people are assuming that ties into their politics everything else. Now, you become like the, the, the you're the object these things for them. Yeah. For sure and sit there and think about, I see, I see, you know, we have a the diversity side of, of motor sports is growing especially NASCAR, whether that's in the stands. You know, a part of the teams at three strikes, whatever it is. And I sit there and I'll see I'll show up to the track. And and, and you'll see some African American fans that are wearing chase Elliott t shirt or Jimmy Johnson t shirt and part of me is things like, okay, one does. I know I'm in do they care, right? Are they like this guy in any good? You know, it's like it's I wonder what they think. And and, and I sit there and wonder that a lot yesterday. I was driving down the highway. And I'll look over and I see. To after American girls in the car next to me, and I see an old. I actually were texting about earlier an old Clinton lawyer, t shirt. And I'm like. It was it was really awesome. I wouldn't even Cup series when he's run this car. And so it was.

"So, like a bigger city, we'd do Saturday Sunday. How would you so you, you had an RV? We didn't start with an RV no. And, and I can quit material. It was way too. Heavy from Jeep didn't do that kind of racist. Stay in hotels, Airbnb. Okay. It's hard to find what the two hundred and twenty pound dog. Wow. I haven't even thought about that. Yeah. And, and we stayed, and then eventually we, we just got tired of moving our stuff, not just in and out of people's houses for these events and out of different Airbnb is all the time. It was just the, the level of grounded. Nece was. We had a sense of a home, you know, like our little spot. We always had to set up our spot in somebody else's place, and then break it down clean it up. And then dope, packing event set up an event break and nothing was hours. And that's not to have a sense of home for like someone in recovery. Was that nomadic lifestyle helpful for you to be so busy to be so on the go, or was it like stressful where you are, like, what was that? Like for you. Mentally. I mean, the the place I was in, like I made danika Emma higher power. Right. So she keeping her and what she wanted to do in her life in that spot secured my my safety, like my my security. My everything was her all of a sudden, and I thought that was okay. And so, I mean it was hard, you, you go from being super connected Roman, the have accountability, and you have a circle and you have this process and you have a routine, and then just to essentially, I gotta resentment, and then I said, you know, screw it. I'm going to go with her. And she became a higher power into the so she was my program. What's the resentment? Resentment. I don't know how to really define it other than like I'm upset or angry at somebody for something, you know. So I said, you know, scream out in never having to look at myself for that, you know, it's your fault not mine. Right. And escape. Yeah. Resentment. How did that feel for you? Did you feel that he kind of put you there as that higher power? So all of this, we've mentioned moved into the an RV we've got an RV, and then we spent the, the next seven months living in RV together, which we actually loved..

And then of course alley raise men's alley Razman if you don't know who that is, gymnast who was spearheading and really big part of that trial against the trainer that had worked for the USA gymnastics team. So definitely go watch those as a little PSA moment here the being the show to let everybody know that that happened last night on Wednesday, and it was quite moving and stuff like something that you, you should go watch. They're also some lighthearted moments in this. If you don't want to go out some. I mean, it's it's not sad, it's it's, it's up losing. It's moving and it's up lifting, but there's also some lighthearted moments in the show. Danika Patrick was the host, which was interesting, and they also brought in a bunch of comedians to work with her and do some skits and such like that too. So it's actually a pretty good show. They didn't do. It was actually pretty fun of the fact that was very interesting how a race car driver gets gets the gig to be a host. Usually it's a comedian like, or Peyton Manning a least or something like that, but whatever. That was last night go watch the though botch the speeches and the presentations of those two wars, which are the big parts of the show. Really the main reason for the program they have usually every it's usually after the all star game. I may also it's like late mid to late July every year. All right, back to football. I know. Sorry, tangent. How to tell you guys that I felt like that was necessary. As well because it was it was raising it was really, really great, really great. Television really great being able to watch and listen to what they have to say because they both Jim Kelly over the years has persevere through so much. And then Allie raise, men has been able to like it's legit like courage so much to have to go up there and stand up to her her beauty and her attacker in her a person that did not treat her the right way. So yeah, that's it was it was quite amazing seeing her and talking and all the stuff that she said, urging urging us to to a call to action pretty much as well. She did during that during that speech. So I noticed that this fans football show Tom, but you know, we have to, we need to put our fans football stuff blinders away. Sometimes we get mired in our own lives and definitely need to be able to expand ourselves and go watch, take part in things that are important to us our part into important to us for sure. So. Back to the football. All right. We got about half with this segment. We're going to start on. We're gonna do to one or two different guys. Let's do one. And actually he's one of my favorite players and he's actually young player. I think he was. He was rookie last year from the university of Iowa. That's George Kittle tight end for the San Francisco forty Niners and I'm not a fan maybe a little bit, but no, it's because I really liked this guy and he's a, he's not the biggest guy. He's not gonna bruise. You not gonna Agron or something like that, but he's fast..

"Let me make a couple of other points about this she brings up danika patrick danika patrick is precisely what i'm referring to here the fact of the matter is is the danika patrick couldn't cut it as a nascar driver and it's also the fact of the battery that the only reason danika patrick was in nascar is because she is a woman if we are going to demand that we stop asking whether or not a woman cut it in a certain field we also offer demand that we stop giving women opportunities in certain fields simply because they are women but a handful of female automobile races and danika patrick held her own and she was indycar she couldn't hold her on a nascar despite the fact that she was on a very good team with a very good crew chief and had a huge amount of money behind your she simply wasn't very good she may be a very very good race car driver but she couldn't cut it at the highest levels of pressboard in stock car racing that simply a statement of fact yet she stayed in that car because she always had a sponsor because she's a woman a male of her generation who kept running back in the thirties for several years at a team like stewart haas would have been can before she was before she lost their sponsorship that part is also true so like i said i think that this demand that this needs to go both ways that if we're going to say that it is inappropriate to raise questions about whether or not women are suited for certain roles we can't then turn around and give certain roles the people just because they are women because it looks good to be able to do so this is news talk eleven thirty w i s n and you're listening to the best belling rapid traffic from the lynch mc wanna go total traffic center i ninety four eastbound jammed all the.

"Let me make a couple of other points about they she brings up danika patrick danika patrick is precisely what i'm referring to here the fact of the matter is is the danika patrick couldn't cut it as a nascar driver and it's also the fact of the bed that the only reason danika patrick was in nascar is because she is a woman if we are going to demand that we stop asking whether or not a woman he cut it in a certain field we also audit demand that we stop giving women opportunities in certain fields simply because they are women they've been a handful of female automobile races ed danika patrick held her own when she was indycar she couldn't hold her on a nascar despite the fact that she was on a very good team with a very good crew chief and had a huge amount of money behind your she simply wasn't very good she may be a very very good race car driver but she couldn't cut it at the highest levels of pressboard and soccer racing that simply a statement of fact yet she stayed in that car because she always had a sponsor because she's a woman a male of her generation who kept running back in the thirties for several years at a team like stewart haas would have been can before she was before she lost their sponsorship that part is also true so like i said i think that this demand that this needs to go both ways that we're going to say that it is inappropriate to raise questions about whether or not women are suited for certain roles we can't then turn around and give certain roles the people just because they are women because it looks good to be able to do so.

"Well i'm gonna i don't think the aggies when they when rosen scored thirty six straight points in hey listen the jewish quarterback scoring that's right they they thought he was the devil of course their defense had the greatest collapse of all time but i for some reason we we are now days into this and you keep missing my point my point is it may be that there's only been two prominent jewish quarterback it may be right my point is it seems like a ridiculous thing to status fact when i have no idea how anyone would know the religion of quarterbacks for the better part of thirty five years that's all i'm saying that i have no idea and i'm nerve nfl nerd i have no idea tomorrow anyone's really i don't know any players religious i'll investigators say dak prescott you're saying he's jewish nope nope not saying you identify what it's religion is that prescott i don't know that's my shawn watson that's my point aaron rodgers i have no idea patrick mahomes isn't aaron rodgers with danika patrick yes he is okay there you go that's your religion of love right dr right guard that is my point see you can't there's no way to to constantly make this this fact that there hasn't been a jewish quarterback when i'm questioning how anyone would know for thirty years the religion of the quarterback todd and don show chad good morning god hey guys i love the show but i need to lay off this cop he was alone and taking there's fire going on and maybe at best one percent of you and your audience can tell me what actually be wonder if i have no idea all but the ball was dropped well before him and no you don't have no idea that's what i just said this when he said that's what i just said shit i have no idea how i would react i've never been in that situation i is possibly going to commit suicide alone in you guys and the rest of the media capri pru the problem how's that by.

"Are i think they were interested in them i think they would have what have interest you know whether he would wanna come to green bay you was another story is jeff knows is a different place that's unusual in the nfl but you know the martellus bennett situation might have turned the packers off something like that i mean martellus bennett was was a big personality and it didn't work out and and like i said this is a different place at a guy like does brian you know it may not be the greatest fit for him but i think that would be the perfect type of of player to come in here on a proven deal the guy who's got something to prove and try to get this team because they i think they do need another offensive weapon for rogers hey snail go mckay thanks for joining us thanks for having me i always have the female lens talking nfl and and i saw danika patrick yesterday courtside at an nba game and she was she was linked to a quarterback who's i he's i aaron rodgers is talking about and it was it was named that he is now i believe a small or minority owner of bugs in the nba i just wanted to hear your opinion on that and then also i want to know what kind of player do you think that the packers have an eye on as the draft comes up so those two questions it caught us a little by surprise last night when the whole thing came down when when the bucks were sold a couple years ago there were rumors that rogers might be involved in the ownership group and and then nothing ever happened now there's a there's a a little bit of a joke here i think we could make you know this this past week the story comes out that rogers wants a greater say in the things that are happening in the packers well and he goes and buys a share of the box maybe that's how he's going to get a greater say in decisionmaking over a over a i i say that jokingly but you know rogers likes basketball and and you know what green bay it's about an hour and forty five minutes from the walkie guys the packers players go down there sit courtside every chance they get and and.
