RH Profits With Travel Spending Shifted to High-End Home Decor

"The company formerly known as restoration hardware. Honey Monster second quarter profits much higher than expected strong overall sales. And shares of RH are up more than twenty, two percent today in the stock sitting in all time high. Are you just kind of interesting because a lot of what we're talking about right now is people will look at revenue growth look at dooms growth in the quarter or all of these different companies and are each only increased revenue less than a percent. But the really impressive thing was like you said, Christie increase in their gross margin, they're operating margin and. They're not march and their earnings per share. So I think it's kind of a different look than a different response than we've been seeing a lot for these high growth tech stocks. This is more of a company that showing they have a lot of pricing power and they are growing in a less a way that we haven't seen very a lot recently. Yeah RH is. For anyone who's ever been in the restoration hardware you it's one of those stores you walk in. It's like. Well, it's it's clearly nice stuff. It's quality merchandise. Some of it is exceptionally pricey, but I think this. This probably goes along with the narrative. In the same direction as the narrative that we've seen in the last six months with companies like wayfair and Home Depot and Lowe's where. More people are looking around the homes that they are trapped in and saying all right I'm if I'm not going to go on a vacation I'm gonNA spend money improving this place that I live in. Yeah and that was called out in the share holder letter for this quarter, they talk about the elevated level of spending in the home. So yet the booming real estate activity accelerated shift for moving to your home. A lot of people are leaving the city's moving to the suburbs and then taken homebuilding trying to renovate to make sure their workplace is the best place they can have possible and because you're talking about it, I did spend a good chunk of my morning on the restoration hardware look book website, and I now want to buy a five thousand dollar couch. Well I'll be look I'd like to buy A. New Couch. It costs five thousand dollars in. That's why I'm just gonNa stick with couch that I have. The last check what's on craigslist for one hundred dollars? For the growth that this stock has seen and look, we've seen a lot of stocks you mentioned Zoom Zoom in this category, even with the recent drop over the past week or so Tesla, which started out the year at around eighty five dollars a share is still. Around I don't know this morning before the market opened it was close to three ninety. Restoration hardware is up roughly five times in value. Since late March, I, Know Cherry picking the bottom, but it's a reminder that it's not just the. Sexy tech companies that can have these kinds of returns. where I'm going with this Maria, is that for all of this growth restoration hardware and I can't call it h I'm sorry. This company still seven and a half billion dollar company. This is not huge. Do you think? This is still an acquisition target because it seems like sort of thing in the same way that people have said about wayfair despite wayfair growth. You know someone could still come in and make them an offer. Restoration hardware is. Not a very big company and it appears to be very well run, and as you said, they're really doing good things with their margins. I think it's a possibility. So wayfair is about twenty four, billion dollars right now I? Think it has a niche within the luxury market and that's what in their earnings call. They also talk about how they. Have elevated their shift to a luxury brand with luxury market with luxury margins at a higher pace than they anticipated and so I think that if you're looking to expand into this niche, it would be a really interesting acquisition target for them. They do in their letter also talk about all of their long-term growth plans and some of them are kind of lofty they're planning. To Open hotels, they have a luxury yacht called the h three that is available for charter in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. So they have pretty lofty goals of what they want to be. So I wonder if they don't think they want to be acquired but I think if I was a company looking to grow into that luxury niche, this would be something I'd be considering.

5 Ways to Spice Up Your Pix Life

"Much has been written about the evils of your Acquisition Syndrome often referred to as gas. And the US. It is a real thing for many photographers. But my personal view of this election is isolated more to spending big bucks on cameras and lenses. What about those smaller purchases that bring us true joy and energize our enthusiasm for photography. I'll make my anti gas case on today's tedious podcast I. Hope You enjoy the show. I don't know if you've ever done this but I'm going to admit you right now. That I have okay. Now fortunately is just you and me so you know no one else will. No I've never I've never admitted this anywhere else before. And this is the truth I'm telling you the truth right now. So but just from my mouth to your ears right now have you ever Set. A new camera or an accessory for it. On. The table in front of you while you worked watch TV listen to music you know just. said it there It wasn't in use. There was no particular reason to do this. Other than you just wanted to look at it and admire it's beauty. I've done that. Honestly, I. I have done that more than once. To cases that come to mind right now, the first one is the Olympus pen. F. In its handsome leather half case Oh. My Gosh. What a beauty So pretty. The other one is the Fujifilm x one hundred V with its aluminum grip? Yeah. That's pretty two different cameras you know the my pen F is a silver Penev. Got Some really beautiful silver lenses and I get this brown leather half case with a matching rhys strap. Really Nice and then my ex one hundred V is the all black model which I really liked for the Fuji Film. And it has this aircraft aluminum grip really really pretty. Really Nice. And when I look at these things sitting on the table in front of me. While I'm watching TV, while I'm listening to music while I'm browsing the web doing whatever the heck. I do at ten o'clock at night. It makes me WANNA go out and take pictures you know I go i. Can't wait to get that camera my hands and go do something. And that's the idea that's the idea and especially right now that's the idea. To be excited to have enthusiasm to you know want to go do something that you actually can do pick up your camera and go take pictures when we're a bit stale feeling that stale how can we spark this kind of joy? Without digging our credit cards for a fifteen hundred dollar charge in my trick as you've already figured out has been through new accessories and techniques, and you may be surprised to know that I have five of these. To share with you this week. Okay. So let's let's get started on these little things. This is my anti-gas list. Okay. Because they don't qualify they don't call not one of these qualify. For Gear Acquisition Syndrome and you can argue that with me but I'm not going to yield on this on already. Here we got and I'm GonNa fool with you on the first one the first one's. GonNa. Mess with you right out of the shoot. The first one is a new Lens. Coin what you just said, right a new lens but a vintage one. Yes. So it's only new to you is been around for a long time. Yes. You could spend twelve hundred dollars on a new state of the art optic no problem. You can spend more than that if you wanted. But scoring of vintage beauty for one hundred dollars or less. Can Be just as satisfying in evokes a far less guilt. In the images that this glass producers can truly inspiring because it seems like each lens that you find on Ebay or craigslist or Oetzi or your local camera shop each vintage lens that you find has a different feel to it and. Go. Wow. This is really Kinda neat and sometimes in the world of digital optics everything sort of produces the same super magnificent results right which is great. Until you know a thousand frame of the same super magnificent result and he got I really would like to see something different. A new vintage lens can do that. And since most of US shoot murless or have a meritless camera, they adapt these lenses adapt. So well, meritless cameras. It's not even funny. You can get an adapter for like fifteen bucks at works. Great. You have this manual Focus Lens you take some pictures with it. You're going. Wow, this is really interesting. This looks different. It's different operating is different looking through the electronic viewfinder with it's just different the way around and it can be very motivating very inspiring. It can push you to photograph things that you might bypass otherwise just because turn out interesting with this particular Lens.

New Xbox Series X Controller Leaks Suggest Potential Launch Date

"Soft new xbox series ex consul confirmed and leaked controller packaging via the verge Microsoft is rumored to be unveiling its second cheaper next xbox console. Console this month and it looks like it will definitely be called. xbox series s the verge has obtained photos of Microsoft's new. Next Gen. xbox controller, and white complete with packaging that mentions the xbox series s twitter user. Zach S was able to purchase the controller today and we've confirmed it's genuine. The new controller was sold on a resale site today and side of the packaging notes that the controller works with xbox series X and. S Consoles make has not officially unveiled. An xbox series s yet nor has the company even confirmed that white xbox series x controller mysterious white xbox series controller also appeared online last month complete with the new deep add texture triggers in new share button. This league matches the previous controller leak and retail packaging suggests that this could be appearing in store. Soon, quote we have a lot in store for xbox in two, thousand, twenty, eight share. You says a Microsoft spokesperson in a statement to the verge. Announce at this time. So if you look on your twitter mice where timely in particular and I'm sure you're well, there are a lot of videos of these controllers being embarks in touched and flipped around, and I'm not sure we're. Watching right now. Yeah. Not sure where they're all exactly coming from I thought I had read something about stores being looted. And the thought is maybe they were in stock at that best buy that was being looted. Who knows because he rumored released? There was a rumor that the series was going to come out in August I believe. So if that was to be believed or maybe it's gotten pushback. Anyway, there's some rumored evidence that these controllers could be in at stores who could say, but if you look at the controller itself, it was I. Think you actually have an elite controller on your desk, don't you because the D pad for this new one looks very similar to that I mean at least it as it from this photo, and there is a share button in the middle and other than that. It looks incredibly similar. It does. But just fine with me. Honestly I. DON'T I. Don't mind that. I'm happy to dual shock is getting a makeover. 'cause that controllers always made my hands cramp after too long. The xbox controller I have no issues with. It's actually why it's my preferred to play on I the controller so much more comfortable. Yeah. My hand in twenty in two, thousand and ten, and prior to that, I really liked the playstation controller because smaller small hands. But since my like my hands kind of changed I find the xbox like much more comfortable like. There's something about it just works better for me now. Yeah. I. Think this Controller Looks Great. I love the white. Hat is something I might have to get used to. But I know it's something that I think a lot of gamers particularly more sports focus players want those those little side pieces between the deep had to do specific move sets on. It is weird that there's so many of them out in the wild, and like that one person posted that they bought one on offer up for thirty five dollars. That was a great deal I was like that's a steal for any controller. Let alone controller for an unreleased. Be. Somebody who didn't know what they had just like it's an exodus because it's a hot troll. I. Stole this new to offload it quickly. Pretty much. I, would I feel like that is when you know it's stolen merchandise selling it for thirty dollars and some weird website just like sure I'll take that and they just think it's probably the. Current, xbox controller because they look so similar. Wonders. Like. Are you buying Oregano here? You know it was. Like take an xbox controller. Crack Open, do some modifications externally. So to try to cheat a unreleased controller. Or is this is putting a button. Sensitive. briquetted thing they. They did some modifications to like and make up that story I don't know. La Interesting for people who aren't familiar with what offer up is essentially like a, let's go or a craigslist where you post pictures and then people in your vicinity can buy items from you and I've seen some very suspicious television posts on there before like come to my garage where I have all of these TV's in boxes that you can buy. One hundred dollars and I'm like. A feels like you took that off with trucks. I. Didn't take anything. But I think that this is, oh, sorry, go ahead. Bro. Say the back of the box. There are also photos of that. If anyone's interested, the deep has just described as refined. Yet familiar input nothing really there and the share button and share content seamlessly, and then it goes on about how there's. And Bluetooth support and the textured grip, and that's kind of it.

Direct Connections With Jonny Mopar

"Did we talk about your road runner on the first episode, we did together of the show I. Don't want why don't you tell us the story? Yes. Aside from chargers and burnt up Khuda. Johnny and a whole host of other MO- pars. Johnny has also had a really awesome dude. You're roadrunners bad, ass. Tell us about your road. I remember seeing the pictures of it for the first time and I'm like. Hey, you have too many cool cars that I want. So. Tell us about that. Awesome roadrunner. This is the ratty one right the blue. Absolutely that okay. Man That card if I could find that exact car right now, I'd be a very happy man but. Tell us tell us the whole story about the road. All right. So Up in the high desert, which is I think it's like Apple Valley area out here. Not You know not that you would know where this is but anyway, it's it's it's a little bit of a stretch to get there from where I lived but I think it was in the recycler craigslist or something? I'm not even sure craigslist was around back then but I found this seventy roadrunner right And it was pretty sketchy description and stuff and I call the guy and he's like ads. Pretty. Roach Dow. But it does run. It's a three car I'm like all right has tiktok tack in it unlike. Allen go check this thing out so I was just dating my wife back. Then you know so I I I cook stir into going for a drive. You know a road trip up to go check out this car. And get there and it's like this. Lavender primer color in somebody rattled canned stripe on the hood. Had the Bulge Hood. And but Iran. And I was like, Oh, by had, we'll flares in the back which I didn't And I think I think I paid. I want to say was like Fifteen hundred bucks to two thousand dollars somewhere in there. Drug at home. And then I didn't like the color. So I black primaried the whole thing and then I drove it around a little bit but I didn't have it long and then I was starting to chip out the crap and you know the flares and the wheel wells the hated it, and then it's like, oh. God. Why did I opened this up just nasty like they just they just got in there with like sheet metal cutters and just like peeled the medal up and then just mud it you know. Was Nasty and then the right rear corner that car. It had been hit and then so somebody cut a clip off of another car I'm thinking a four door. And like grafted it into the car, they did a terrible job of doing it. So I I was just like this way too much for me. I'm I'm not gonNA take on the project like this so I think it was probably the recycler. Anyway this guy from same area Apple Valley calls me up. He's a tow truck driver and he's like a he was yeah a I I know that car seen that car up here stopped trying to buy that car that guy wouldn't sell it for years and years, and he's like, how did you get a hold of it and I'm like it was in the recycler He's I can't believe I. missed it. You know. So anyways, he goes. Well, he didn't have eating the money, but he's like, would you be interested in a trade and I'm like I don't know like what do you got? You know he's listing off the one hundreds and you know some bodies like Darts and Whatever Who wants a dart when he can get chargers all the time for not? Exactly. Exactly. So unlike No not interested. He goes well, I got a I got a sixty nine road runner and I go. He goes with doesn't have drive train in it, but you know it's five blue and. I go. Sounds interesting. I'd be interested in that and he goes I. Go dude this car is rough. The seventy is rough 'cause. I've really like seventy seventies on my favorite. Described everything wrong with the car. I think it had three fifty five's in it but anyway, he's like well, can you come up and can I check out the car because I was really Skeptical that he would be interested in trading for it. Right so I, I, drive a met him. I went like three quarters of the way up there, and then he met me because he was working he was actually he showed up in a tow truck. We met like right off the freeway. You know he's checking out the car and he's like I want I'm interested and I'm like all right cool and he goes well. Come back up on the weekend and all I had was like a really sketchy picture. Of the Blue Road runner, the sixty nine.

EBay Nears Deal to Sell Classified-Ad Unit to Adevinta

"Nearing a deal to sell its classified ad unit to Advanta, Advanta, Advanta, let's go ahead and enter. Whatever and Mike, they're valuing this $8 billion. I didn't even know this was a thing. It's the international Craigslist had never heard of their classified ads unit. Neither had I, frankly. So beyond other Sir, the investors and eBay have over the last several years kind of pushed eBay toe strip themselves and a lot of their other business units, which for those shareholders need bay. That's been a good thing. If you if you won't pay pal, for instance, that stock has done incredibly well. They struck a deal to sell off their StubHub ticketing division last year, and this is really the last big one that they had that wasn't really core to eBay's business. This classified ads, you know, think again. Think of it, as like a Craigslist or Facebook marketplace for a lot of non U. S markets. Wish again if you're competing with Facebook marketplace, I'm not really sure how you make money. EBay's classified ads unit, but that's not here, nor there, I guess.

This stay job up to this point just celebrated my twelfth year employment with my current employer so I'm really happy with that, so I I am still a civil engineer and still loving it to this day sense being featured on the show, a lot of things said change in. With the weddings I've slightly increase my prices from the thirty five hundred one. I did the episode to just about a little bit over four thousand at this point, and that was primarily because I started getting a little bit more business, but then I also wanted to concentrate on other parts of the business, and so I thought okay. Let me raise my prices. Maybe they'll slow it down. It did slow it down to a point where I could start. Investing more time in other parts of the business, and so now I am dependent on what hat I'm wearing. I'm either still a wedding photographer, and that's usually primary marks through September, and then throughout the year I can either be doing commissions for landscape, and now with the newest thing with architecture. There was no one way to get an image. There's multiple routes to do it so always trying to keep fresh with your skill set, and understanding how things go and evolving I think that helps you start off in that business. Special Guest Reveals Top 5 YouTube Traffic Secrets

"Jomar Folio Joe. How're you doing what's happening? Hey glad to be here for that. Awesome intro man. This is the first time we live interview on the show before which is which is really exciting. I love comic'll boards in the back. So dead man just waiting for the two club exit. Come in the mail to even out the set so it's GonNa be awesome. Joe One last Last week he said he got one which is pretty cool so all right so obviously. We don't have a ton of time but a lot of questions for you. So inside of the Traffic Secrets Book is a whole chapter on Youtube traffic. And most of it I pull from you because you are. The Guy who on our team is doing stuff and And you've done such an amazing job and so most of the things are are there from you and so This is kind of to teach people about what's happening inside the book but also just get them to know you and understanding Youtube. So why do you think different than all the other platforms? That are that are out there. You instagram facebook twitter. Take all of a sudden like why is youtube like why are you so passionate about you too? You know so. It like a facebook instagram. And see a of people like it's very It's sometimes easier for them to build a big following on facebook or instagram. The kind of go to youtube and they struggle a little bit. And it's because you to isn't just a social media platform. It is a social media platform. It's also a search engine where people are searching for certain certain topics searching how to do something but you also have to do with you too is not only put up content that engaging that people wanNA watch that has value but you also have to add kind of a story element to it in the one thing that you don't want to do and I see people do. This is kind of repurpose. Your content like say you have constantly putting up facebook and instagram. Our podcast in you like you distribute to all these different channels. If you put on Youtube a lot of times you're going to find. It's not going to get that much traction and think about youtube like this like when you watch you to be set like you guys are out there and you're watching. Youtube. Why do you subscribe to a certain channel? You're going to subscribe right. Maybe you'll they're showing you how to make money online or how to grow your right. But there's a ton of videos on there that talk about like how to go to your instagram channel. But it's like what makes you subscribe. WanNa Watch somebody. It's going to be their personalities can be the way the engaged with you and it's going to be the way the content comes across so what. I would say for Youtube. The differences is treat you to like. It's its own thing. Make videos just for you to try to approach it not as a marketer but as a creator not you're gonNA sell anything but that you're going to like build your audience and you following. Yeah one of my favorite things about Youtube is talked about in the book a little bit like every every social platform. I'd say facebook live like we're doing right now. It's happening and then like it'll drop. It'll be here for next couple of days. It'll drop down the news feed and eventually disappears. Nobody'll ever siegen whereas youtube is like the only platform where you create something and then it grows over time because not just social social and it search and that's why it's so it's it's different 'cause you create something if you create the right way then it sits there and to grow throughout time as opposed to everything else was seems to diminish over time and so it gives at least for me. Who's WHO's creating stuff. It gives me more incentive craigslist. It's nice because it lasts beyond the moment whereas facebook live. Is there for a moment? Then it's gone where youtube it can last for for forever. I mean like. We talked about earlier. Overcome Nagasaki Videos overcoming pornography addiction? Like they still get hundreds and hundreds of US every single month. We don't even sell the product anymore which is probably sad. Because you're an affiliate making money when I know that video. I think I think you're screech out when you were doing. The bucket has hundreds of clicks on their in what it does the content builds on each other. So you put the video video out three years ago in if you keep putting contin out. It's like you're gonNA keep getting lead you're going to keep getting people subscribing watching your stuff like you said yet just doesn't disappear is built on up into the question. This is off the questions that you sent me as pre questions. I'm excited about this one. I hope that's okay. I'm GonNa put you on the spot a little bit but I think a lot of times. People think youtube strategies like okay. I've got to make the most perfect video in the world. And you look at companies like dollarshaveclub drive for example Where they made this video goes crazy viral and then built the company up and then he sells to whoever sold for a billion dollars right. And so we're like okay. I've got to make the perfect youtube video and my people stress about and because they never actually make something at all versus like you told me book example talked about the strategy like Gillette or or other things like that we talked about that because that's a strategy that more people like me can actually do of not like going to make the perfect video instead. It's looking at it a little bit differently. We talked about how how how led to their strategy. How we can use that as well. Yeah so so. Here's thing when you guys are starting your Youtube Channel. Think of it like in the first thing you WanNa do is really go deep in unique whatever you're doing like so for example. Gillette what they did was. They didn't go out there and say well they did. They try to make a viral video like dollar shave club in a flat rate. So what they did was they said. Listen we want to dominate for the keyword? How to shave because people that watch how to shave videos by our product right to the shave your head how to save your back at a shave your legs right needed. All these videos that got hundreds thousands millions of US and they were very targeted to their subscribers. So the thing I would tell people is figure out what your knee. Shas figure out. What you're you're going to go after and go deep in that niche handle like the way you explained the whole blue ocean strategy and expert secrets Because you know the one thing you don't WanNa do is go and look at someone has a million subscribers and then follow what they do right so like say you're doing because you know they've already been established they already have a huge audience. Say you're doing Amazon. So you WANNA do is go through. Amazon. Say Okay. Make videos on Amazon Amazon. Fbi on Amazon drop shipping on Amazon affiliate and they go through hit every every time anything that would searching for Amazon. You WanNa make a video on and it doesn't have to be a perfect video like you said it just has to be engaging enough to get to get retention but doesn't have to be this high production video but we don't want to do is you don't WanNa make a video on Amazon video on how to make money online. Then make a video on procrastination and then they video on the current right you you want. You wanted to. If you're just starting like you want to create like this this is traffic lean. That Youtube knows okay. When Joe put the video out it's going to be on Amazon and then the then they'll start showing your video for more to more and more people that search like the Amazon stuff and then you could expand out there

Attention Capital's Joe Marchese on the crisis - and opportunity - in how we measure eyeballs on the internet

"Welcome to the digital podcast Brian. Marcy this week I'm joined by Joe. Marquel JOE is the former Fox executive who is now the CEO of attention capital an investment firm and operating company. That's focused on those media. Companies THAT CAPTURE ATTENTION. Attention is required. One property girl boss. Jani discuss why he thinks the attention. Konami is in what he calls a state of subprime. And why you can still build an AD media company in two thousand twenty but just not one that's based on. Cpm DISPLAY ADS. Hope you enjoy Joe. Walk into podcasts. I thank you for having known each other so long. We have this is this is Serious throwback here so going back to social vibe you're we're GonNa talk about Social Vibe later. Gay But what you're doing. I mean you've had you've had a really fascinating career. I mean I think when we first knew each other You start up then And you went through that startup pivoted. You did the pivot and everything this you sold it. Yup He had an accent the and then instead of doing the sort of serial entrepreneur route you went in to like a large media organization. Yeah and so You saw the innards of that right and now you're back sort of on. I would say the investor side but something more explain. What attention is so? I mean attention is a company. It's an IT's an operating company It's just a company that's built to buy other companies And and kind of that fit a particular thesis okay. What's the thesis That the entire global economy runs on top of the attention. Economy of which advertising is the most visible market And that the attention economy is in a state of subprime. Okay explain The mets like subprime. Yeah yeah the the metrics that we use to measure Attention or that we used to represent attention or becoming less and less tied to what people are actually spending their time doing so. I think that there's An opportunity right now to say that there are things that have better and more attention or higher quality attention than the metrics give them credit for I mean you guys talk about this plenty and digitally as cover the industry of advertising but in the in the chase of really what we'd call vanity metrics impressions and page views an There so uncoupled from what people are actually what quality attention is and so therefore things that have quality attention are probably undervalued of put simpler We've kind of convinced the world's been convinced by by big tech for the most part that everything can be measured And if you can't measure it don't buy it then that to me makes makes me think everything that's hard to measure is probably undervalued. Yeah but you've kind of been on about this for a while you're right because I can remember talking to you about different like different metrics. Vp and whatnot. Because you saw the problems when it comes to CBC or CPM right And then I'm sure like within than Fox. He saw the limits particularly of of how. Tv is measured. Yeah and and you know it's funny People assume that you'd really hate TV. Measurement as a digital person. Yeah but to be honest like I'm kind of bullish on panel data because panel data. It's hard to fraud Like like I mean they you know. There's there can be entire phone farms. In other countries that Census data like digital data. Pick up but sit at digital guys. Were always an usually. They're all guys. I were always railing against Nielsen. And how terrible Nielsen is and you get to the other side and your leg. Actually this isn't that no no. It's not that bad I will say like look. Nielsen can be inaccurate. But there's not a warehouse full of TV's racking fake impressions right like like panel. Data is a representation of What a certain set of people are doing. And then you extrapolate like. This is how much time we have the. You know. It's all the classic things like every every four there's more ad impressions in the world and digital world. The more people are watching more ads. And Chiavari think we're just trying to shove them in there so this is all true so why in the world of all the things that you would want to invest in would media. I mean it seems like a terrible. I don't WanNa talk you out of it. It's too late to do too late. I'm here explain to me why this is an opportunity so I actually think that I think there's a couple of things that that are huge opportunities right now which is As platforms grow and as as they chased these vanity. Metrics Trust begins to erode right quality. Goes Down I mean look all platforms engineered towards volume not quality. And and what I mean by that is they are if you make something for a penny and sell it for two pennies. You've made a penny of profit if you make something for ten dollars until it for twelve dollars you've made two dollars of profit. Humans like the two dollars of profit that makes sense computers. Say That none of that. Penny one hundred percent margin. Let's do that a trillion times right and that is why you see like some of the largest advertisers in the world on on the major platforms. are selling very low cost goods right so same thing applies to products as applies to news so in this world where trust is a roading. the curator brands kind of become king. Like no one goes to the front page of Amazon negotiating. You don't you. Don't start at the front page of time to go shopping. You come there with an idea of what you're going to buy And I think the great example of this wire cutter right. I mean wire cutter which you know. curates what electronics. You should buy. has built trust with the community Obviously The New York Times acquired a while ago but these curator's in wire cutter I think is to the next evolution of of the web. I guess we're still going at the Web. Go for here. What craigslist was to the window version? and then post craigslist. There was Angie's list and that was a brand being put on top of it. I mean I have something to shock you With Angie did not meet every contractor. Angie's list those are those are television. Commercials Yeah and that's a brand that got built up and why does that matter? We'll because people would start there rather than starting out a search engine or starting an open platform. I think what's interesting is particularly. Let's stick with the wire cutter as an example. I mean people in media. I think love love the wire cutter. I think with good reason Mostly because it's an anti-scale play anything algorithm mic. It seems like is gamed. Yes I mean because when you go to Amazon and like I don't know about you but if I'm buying those like okay the bestseller best reviews whatever and then you're like you know we've written about it you know there's Yup armies of fake one hundred dollars and anything that can be gamed like that will be and that's what brands are supposed to be. So I I'm a huge fan like I am. I am anti a lot of things in the way. Advertising is kind of polluted The Internet and chasing kind of the metrics that don't matter I'm a huge fan of brands. See Brands are the things that you hold responsible for that you trust too right like Brand less like Kind of commodities. If there's you know lead in the toy or they're you know the you know the classic stories of you know Tylenol. An the the brand is the thing that consumers hold responsible when you go to a platform It's almost like you. They're extracting the margin from brands. And I think that there's a huge role to be played in. In consumers minds to be building up brands that can be cures for them for different areas of life. Okay so this was the the the thesis differentiated. Good time because trust is is you know. I think there was that article Max read wrote. It does sort of everything is fake on the Internet a couple years ago. That sort of summed up this this period that you know we were talking over the years right. It was all leading up to this this primis of online advertising See Pile of money That'd be nice right money. It's attention capital capital. So it's a great way nickname your company capital and people like you and I can only imagine So how much what is like two hundred million. I NOT NON reported non real time to to talk. I don't know so. What have you bought so far So first partnered with James Murdoch's lupus systems we bought the TRIBECA Film Festival invested in controlling stakes together and then Girl boss most recently company. Okay so explain. Each of those different types of properties. But why does this fit your thesis? Well so you look at areas of life where people are looking for curation in so tribeca in the entertainment space and girl boss kind of in employment career Lifestyle and so the way we look at it as he'd attention capital is there's two types of things there's community brands so we define a community. Brandis if they threw an event. Would someone get on an airplane and go there Do they permission to curate? Some aspect of the world's tribeca. Obviously they haven't event They literally curate films. They don't make all the films they tell you. Here's what to see with someone. Where the brand on their t shirt. They don't have to be an apparel company but people would wear tribeca shirt and is the community self sustaining without always having to make content right because if you always have to make content. That's a treadmill that you have to run on versus. Is there a community of people who people go the events The thing that gets the most exciting about TRIBECA 's ethos as a brand that was founded after nine eleven downtown. We're here in downtown. New York and And the idea of independent storytelling equality versus volume. Like you just can't see that many movies like we have to be able to curate down to select few all of those things I mean. That's a brand that were incredibly excited about and a founder and CEO. And Jane Rosenthal that we want to work with and kind of expand I. I'm struck that both of them have a quote unquote events component. They're able to turn people out Yup We we are big believers digital so I might be talking my own book cure but we think that there is something to be said about you know and I think people are coming around to about being able to turn out a community of people. Hundred percent We are huge huge believers in in a I R L digital connection real life to digital connection that it's proof that you have that type of influence in the world like versus again factory said the algorithms can be game but people showing up at a movie theater camp. Yeah I mean like you know. I always went back to the sort of game. Of Game of thrones recaps. It's like you know the the reason that there were. So many. Game of thrones recaps. Is I mean it's not just because of like passion or the brand is it's it's because that's what turned page views right exactly. It's entrepreneur right. I don't hate the player. Geno hate the game. I agree on some of the players.

Bob Stolzberg, Voice Pioneer, Shares Some Wise Words

"Hey folks I'm Bob Stolberg the founder and CEO of Voice X. P.. I started voice. Xp back in January of twenty seventeen. So it's been three years We basically build voice APPS and most recently we released a platform that allows anybody to create their own voice APP With not coding. It only takes minutes and the voice apps that they can create a premium meaning. They're built for businesses to get Roi and they do things like syntax tax messages and emails. But we didn't start that way. We started off three years ago building custom skills for businesses and we were really looked at as an agency or a services model and This year we twenty nineteen. We pivoted to assess model with our product platform. So I like to think of Ben around a little bit. Some of our customers are hallmark. CENTURYLINK MERC- Tivo CLICO Square. Banner Health Amazon with we've got a lot and what's what's great is. I think we've covered a lot of ground. Meaning we've delivered for a lot of different customer summer doing diverse things both on Alexa and Google and Samsung so by by being early in the space That's that's really helped us out because it gives us the insight into what customers want where the technology is going and certainly given us some edges and I'm like for example. Were the only ones in the world who have a craigslist simple platform to build skills with these advanced features that you know you can deploy this stuff. Globally globally. So by being a first market mover invoice has been awesome but it's been a lot of work And a lot of trial and error fillers too. So I think it's cool like bring Bob on Bob's local. Were both Saint Louis guys and so I said Hey I want to get you on the podcast. And he's like you. Do you want me to come on. Live and I was like yeah when I so. It's cool though because you know Bob has been in the space like he said for three years and the recent I wanted to bring him on was as like we're we're recording this in the middle of December twenty nineteen and so we're heading into twenty twenty and I'm thinking hurry I want to get. It's somebody on the shell light into like what those first few formative years were like with somebody that's been on the forefront of Alexa so just voice technology general and so Bob. Why don't you share with other lake in the first few years you know? Let's say call it. Twenty seventeen to twenty twenty a little bit before that. What like what have been so your biggest learnings as this thing has evolved and matured in the way that you sort of view the technology today as opposed to maybe initially when I started to get involved in this space? Yeah it's a really good question I don't thank. You need to hire an expensive agency. I know you don't need to hire a developer for this because we built a platform that allows you to crank stuff out and I think there's a lot of misconceptions about voice where you know you really need to dig into a strategy. Excuse me and figure out. Well what are we going to do. WHO's the audience? We're GONNA go after and the simple answer. Is You need to treat your voice experience just like your website and when I talked to my customers I I said when you launched your website in the nineties or two thousands whatever it was you had something really simple and you know I. It told people about you your products and services says and you know maybe you had a forum on there they could opt into contact your sales or something and get your contact info. Let's start with that. You know you don't need to have this campaign that needs to run and attract a certain demographic it's great to have a contest or or some purpose for your skill but you should just treat it as a basic identity tea and you know just seeing We worked on really big hundred dollar campaigns down to two thousand five hundred dollars two hundred dollars a month skills and and I've just seen how easy it is now to create these voice apps with the right tools and a good marketer should know how to market their a website and by looking at it through that lens going. Hey if my voice APP is just like my website. How am I going to get it out there? They're able to do

How to Get Rid of Your Stuff (Part 2)

"To get rid of staff things to to think about Art WanNa make money or do you want to get stuff out of your house. It's legitimate if you need to make money I'm not going to sit here and tell you to not because you know sometimes you need to make the money but the goal is to get stuff out so do. Do you need to make money or do you just want to get stuff out of the house kind of make that distinction between the two. Do you need to make money or is it more important to you to give up this potential money and just get stuff out faster ebay. ebay is a kind of that. Holy Grail. I know. I've talked about this before in podcasts casts right. I feel like this whole time. I've been looking at this. I've kind of looked up different ones. This is what happens when you've two hundred forty one podcasts. You feel like I've done one on this before but hey here's what I'll say it'll be different this time. Okay so ebay is a lot of work it just is I used to eat it Ebay Ebay all the a time like that was what I did all the time. We got me into this. Clutter mess or at least part of it and I used to do that on a regular basis and because I did that I know how much work it is. Okay and how much time it takes. It takes a lot more than just the one week's auction and now they have all these different options for you as a seller too and. I'm not sure how it used to be that you had to like be a seller at a certain in point to be able to do like a buy it now option of the same way anymore but like you can just put stuff up for sale. That means it's sitting in your house. Okay and not only is it. Sitting in your house has to be sitting in your house in a way where it's not getting damaged in any way so it has to be sitting taking up some real actual space in your home so if you want to sell something on Ebay go for it. Just know that it's work okay because there's the research ahead of time. There is the photographing items on Ebay. You happy hat because of the whole you're going to get feedback from somebody and they're gonNA be mad if they don't get what they thought they were GonNA get. You have to list. Every single flaw flaw. My aunt sells on Ebay. She's really great at it and she has an amazing ability to like do it in a way where. She's not excessive. The way that I was I mean she really they. She does a great job at it but she was just telling me recently. She's like yeah she said there. Is this one little teeny tiny flaw that we missed and and she tries to be over the top with how she describes things and take picture takes pictures of every teeny tiny thing that could be a flaw. That is all time. That's time it's research. It's the researching to figure out what sells and what doesn't sell okay and remember my number one advice if this whole allure of ebay is a real thing for you. My number one thing thing that I advise you to do is to go to ebay dot com check the completed listings for the item that you're thinking about selling. Don't don't pay attention to how much people want for it. Only pay attention to how much money people are actually getting for this same item that you have okay and there's generally in in most cases somebody tried to sell something just like what you have on e Bay in the not too distant past and so you can look and see that and a lot of times just doing that will make you go. Oh yeah not worth my time but if it is worth your time go ahead and try it you know. There's IT's amazing. I say this because I didn't have this when I was is selling on Ebay back in the olden days but you know I didn't have a smartphone. They didn't exist back then because they didn't exist. The things you can they do now where you actually take the pictures and upload it straight from your phone without core hurts and all that kind of stuff and camera cards and all the things that I had to do That was just a a much I. It's it's easier now than it used to be. Just be careful. Just be really really careful and research how much it's GonNa cost to ship something so that you do not end up going in the whole doing this. Can you tell that I don't advise Ebay. I just really don't I mean I know a lot of you actually do sell on on Ebay but the ones who do sell on Ebay you know why I'm discouraging people from doing it because you've known people who've made really bad mistakes and charged too little for shipping and and then the item sold for a low price and they basically are. They did lose money. You know I mean so I don't feel like I'm GONNA offend people who sell on Ebay because y'all are exactly the people who know much work it is okay right because also those of you sell on Ebay. I'm sure you experience what I did because I love talking about it. It was like my favorite thing to talk about which just Kinda funny considering the thing. That's actually been successful for me. Which is writing about my deep dark secret in its thing? I don't WanNa talk about but I used to love talking to my Ebay and people would ask me about it and maybe like oh I should do that and you know I mean I just sit there and I would think I can pretty much tell from the way you're talking. You have no idea idea. You're not listening to the part of me saying how much work this is. Your only hearing that I pay twenty five cents for ten dollars or whatever. Okay so ebays. A thing There's other ways to sell online if it doesn't work there another way. Is You know putting things in those facebook groups in the free cycle groups or the. There's buy nothing sell nothing groups where you're just simply giving things away or if you don't WanNa deal with strangers and it's not something super embarrassing. Put it just on your personal facebook account your personal thing where you say. Hey does anybody local want this come pick it up today that works. I mean. I've done that for things that were you know. Big and hard to get rid of that. I knew that somebody would wanna just say hey does any. I think we did that with them. The bed frame that my daughter had when when she Saved up and bought herself a new bed. You know what I mean like our old bed frame. I just put on facebook and said Hey. Does anybody need this and it was gone that day. You know so that that kind of stuff is it's it's great to make use of those types of things but kind of tipping point in my brain here is. Does this make it easier to get rid of this item. Is it easier to put it on facebook or by nothing group or or even sell it for five or ten dollars. Is it easier to do that. Dot then to have to haul it myself to a donation place and sometimes that's the case when you're talking about a bed frame or a mattress or something which I think there's issues with donating mattresses. I'm pretty sure but anyway. I don't know I'm not giving you any expert professional advice. They're Philip. I've heard something about that anyway. Like they don't let you. I don't know but don't take my word for it. Call whatever place you want to donate but the point is if it makes makes it easier to put it on facebook and say hey who wants a free piano. The person who's really excited to get a piano which I'm just going to be honest and tell you that. I've seen a whole lot of people pianos on facebook for free that nobody wanted. I love my piano so I understand but anyway but putting it up there as free means means that the person who's GonNa get it is excited to get it. They're going to bring their own track there and bring their own people to haul things although you may have to help him but that it's going to get things out more quickly and easily than you having to load it into something and then holly somewhere and loader soon I'm saying so the goal here there's always how do I get stuff out most quickly and break through my own decluttering paralysis and all that kind of stuff. You know craigslist. Just be careful with it. I mean there are people who buy and sell on craigslist all the time and have amazing stories and all this and then there's also scary stories. You guys I don't want anything bad to happen to you guys so always be super careful. Don't let people come to your home that you don't know Blah Blah Blah. Be Really careful awful. But I'm just saying it is an option out there you know for advertising certain things but anyway just be careful okay.

Junkyard Etiquette

"I know we've had several conversations about what we're going to talk talk about today and I felt that there's no sense it's just you and I maybe we could have a similar conversation or kind of a revamp of that with some some new information. Maybe just some different stories. He's to kind of pass around. But we're GONNA be talking about junkyards and I guess in the same salvage yard. It's all the same thing really junkyards and salvage yards today. And Kurt I I asked you off air if you had much experience with junkyards in the past and you said not necessarily is that right. Yeah and I don't Personally early but growing up in the south you meet those folks that are I mean I say this with affection but I'm talking about the junker types. And they go. They visit the salvage ajar defined those parts that everyone hopes they find when they go to the salvage yards. You know the parts that are desirable now. These are the treasure seekers that you're you're talking about those type D. Yeah I understand. You know the people that Again not in any way disparaging people drinkers. Because I am one or I used to be one that would love to kind of hang out and junkyards. It's an gather things and find things and try to at least do my best to do. I never really found any gems along the way I never found anything that was really worth You know hanging on the wall or anything. If I looked harder when I was younger I would still have some of those things that would be classic items that would be great to have on the garage wall. Like maybe be some old fenders or maybe you know a grill or something but at the time you know. You're looking at the stuff and it's like it's not really old at that point. But now he would be classic Isaac Parts. That would be something that you know you look back at with nostalgia some sort but you know I would find You know I I would try to stop places along the way if I was taking a road trip. I'd you know it was on my own. I was on my own schedule as well be able to pull off and check out the local junk yard in these small towns ought to go through and you know even if it's just well I would say that's like even it's GonNa be ten minutes but it's not just ten minutes. He kind of caught up in the stuff you know walking around and looking at the the cars they get older as you go to the back of the line sometimes And while we're reminiscing allergists say that I used to remember seeing junkyards. I mean not everywhere but they were more calm and you drive on the country roads and you would see junkyards you know here and there and nowadays at least down South there overgrown Kudzu. Now you don't really see them. junkyards seemed to be more and they're organized. Businesses is more so than they are just A bunch of cars out in the field somewhere next to someone's house. You make a very good point here. So you're you're talking about You know the old Almost Kenneth Starr abused by accident but almost by accident towing business or something and started to store cars and You know then decided. Well I'M GONNA start parts from those cars that I picked up and you know they kind of They evolve that way so they become a small time junkyard salvager dealer or they intended that and they you know have a few acres the property and they they want to become that but it does require some maintenance it requires bringing in new vehicles occasionally getting rid of the old vehicles sometimes when they're pretty much picked over you know to the point where it's just a big hunk of metal that no one could really use rusted or were bent or damaged beyond repair so there's some maintenance even with a small lot that's required but we're talking about today I think in general we'll go back and forth a little bit but we're talking about the ones that are the big ones where there's an inventory list online and there are auctions that are held on the site and they'll specials they charge admission to Gwen because they don't want people just going in because there's ways that people can go in there and actually make not a living they can make a decent profit for the day I guess especially if you know when they get the new cars then because they have they rotate cars a little more frequently than they used to two years ago. Oh sure yeah so you know I. I'm a big fan of the old time junkyards as well. The kind you know that are just kind of heaps of cars that are piled in there. you know kind of Willy Nilly early and you can walk around and pick them pick out parts or look at whatever you want and longtime ago you know when I was walking through some of these I I remember being out in the middle of winter in the snow. Trying to uncover some things. And you know there's an old sixty seven Mustang and You know nearby you might find the Mustang emblem from it and You know you could either their purchase or if you were on the other side of things you could maybe pocket then walkout. I'd I didn't really I never stole any parts I'll be honest with you. I didn't take anything I've been with people at places that have done something like that. I didn't think it was. You just didn't feel right to me to be able to do something like that To Nab a part that normally you know this guy would have made a dollar off of whatever is didn't feel right doing it but a lot of people are okay with doing that and then buying something bigger also you find a lot of parts walkout of junkyards but maybe some of the some of the coolest things I found. Of course you know you find old vehicles that you're interested in but maybe just passing fancy you know like you can look at it and say oh. There's a fifty seven Chevy body. I haven't seen one of those in a long time. It's kind of cool. Look in and see what's left and maybe check out. They've got an old stereo in there. They got the old steering wheel. Maybe parts that people still might go back and pick right but you know or can of worthwhile looking at while you're there. I found an old car in now. I went to school high school in Southeastern Michigan and I was traveling up up in northern Michigan. Not The up but right at the northern tip of Michigan not the upper peninsula bit lower peninsula and my friends and I were walking around this This lot in the wintertime became across. I think it was an old microbus. VW Microbus head a A parking sticker from our high schools parking lot from decades prayer. So somebody I don't know if they hit however there's got to be a story to how it ended up where it did have no idea how it ended up where it did but that same. What was one where you'd walk around and you'd find that they've taken an old Camper top from pickup truck maybe and put it on the ground and torn out the windows and put in chicken wire and there were chickens. Living in and you're the have crazy things like that laying around you know that you're you're wondering what is the story behind all this junk. That's here who's WHO's WHO's The oddball character? That's operating this place. That is the thing that if you go in and talk to the owners of these you know before you walk around. You'll find that a lot of times you're gonNA come across some real interesting character. Some people that have great stories to to tell you want to listen to them or you know maybe. Maybe they're not so nice. Maybe they're nice. Maybe you know everybody has their own demeanor and it's interesting to kind of figure out who who knows knows. What in the area like who's WHO's an expert on Packard's or corvair is or maybe British sports cars or you know who has You know the The market cornered on the import parts in this town there. Some of these bigger ones have sections that are that are just strictly for imports. In some that are just for Chrysler and some Ford and some GM parts and other lots are all mixed up. You know. There's there's all variety of things you can find these junkyards and I know that it's over explaining all this you know. Does this long long lead into this whole thing but some of these these lots especially the newer ones have an incredible amount of organization to them. And they're really meticulous about how they have them laid out yeah. They thrive on keeping their inventory somewhat. Fresh and organized in Moderating it to a certain degree although as I've found out there's there's a lot of shenanigans that go on inside of these places as well. Yeah yeah you know by We'll wait by the customers or by the owners by the customer. The customer service Sube. I'm talking more about the people that go in there and you know rifle through the car's yeah you know Later you know as as we get toward Near the end of this I would. I would like to share some I guess what. I'll call junkyard etiquette with you. If you don't mind valuable for people to hear that well I think so too case 'cause you ever find yourself in a junkyard and you you just don't know you know which for goes on which side where your your spoon goes that kind of thing all right but Yeah there's there's definitely junkyard etiquette and people will call you out on these mistakes if you make them you know some people get not angry but has the L. A.. Frustrated with your behavior if you're not doing things in the way that they feel is the proper way to do things because there are regulars to these people go regularly pick parts. You can make money by doing that if you know what to look for. And that's another kind of interesting angle. This whole thing is that you if you know the valuable parts keep your eyes open because you might just run across these at any point you might be going for a party specifically need and run across something that that you have filed away in your memory. Bank is like Oh that's something that people pay a lot of money for on Ebay were on craigslist. Or wherever how hard would it be pulled that part out and sell it on Ebay. If you have an account I mean it's it might be pretty good profit generator for you.

From Chevy Monte Carlo to Ford Escape

"For years. I've been driving one interational of a Monte Carlo or another and all of all of our longtime listeners you guys have been with you guys have heard my trials and travails with that with that car and you know what it's like when you own a car for a long time and you know it's idiosyncrasies you get used to not having a car payment which is beautiful And eventually I had to give up the ghost man. I still have my Monte Carlo. But a new car. Yeah all right. Well Yeah it's three ninety nine money. No I got a twenty-seven four escape. 'cause I got a great deal on seventeen four. Okay okay. Very good news car. I've ever driven and I'm actually taking possession of it like all. The deals stuff is taking possession of it tomorrow as we're recording. Congratulations -gratulations well. Let's let's hope. It's I still have the Monte Carlo. Though it's you know I won't be able to sell it for anything I understand. Maybe your data take it. He takes he takes on projects. Like this right. Yeah maybe maybe he will. Well I you know I'm I'm just a couple questions if you don't mind we have to jump into shoe topic. Yeah couple all right. So how did he find. Is that something you're buying from a dealer you buy it from a friend you buy from craigslist. What a I'm buying a used With I I found it with the help of a A third party but the the purchase itself is directing. So I've checked out the car and I literally tomorrow all I'm doing is like taking possession of it. Well color is black black. Okay black on the outside. And it's you that's another thing with the cars as little worry gain 2017 model because the color is kind of the last thing I care about. Yeah engine that works. Louis says this has sixty K.. On it but I got a good deal and I was just very happy that I didn't get stuck with you. Know like a cornflower yellow or would you. They've all these fancy car paint names like you know absent minded vermillion or whatever. I don't get it but yeah I got just a regular a black Ford escape because they gotta do some hauling road trips ahead of me and so I I wanted to get Just a little beater pickup truck but like we talked about before. We're talking about the ranger. It's tough to get the the kind of pick-up truck would want you know. No disrespect to an F.. One fifty but I don't needs something like that little manual transmission do Cedar Parking Lot which is very difficult. The nothing funny I I mean I don't know why as to color I mean. That's the last thing that you should be concerned with probably just like a prank you in the parking lot if I see right do something this thinking because I actually went through some of the old research that we had done on the the INS and outs of buying a car. What you should know and what you should avoid what you should look for Cetera Hell yeah well. In a lot of people here in the audience today have war stories and one of the things that we had said in the past. The I think maybe some people weren't on board with was that I like you know know about you will see if you're on board with us. I am very much against Buying a brand new car. Oh Yeah I just. It's just not for me. I know it's for some people but it's not for me on what about you Kurt. I'm not completely against it. Really all right so you buy a new car and it's GonNa last you for maybe four or five years. I mean depending on how much you drive but years trouble-free maybe more Miki at two hundred thousand miles on pretty much any any car nowadays I'm not totally against it. So you see some security in it if you get used to make car payment every month. It's not too that's the one thing that's the one thing 'cause I did get it like through third parties so I do have a car note again. Yeah it's just it's tough to stomach but oh you know what you've got that reliability you've got You know the the the solid feel again of a car underneath you because I know what it's like to go from an older vehicle to newer vehicle and I'm I'm back to the position now by the way where mind is feeling older you know. It's a little more sloppy. It's not quite as it was. Yeah it's just tough to explain unless you're in the seat experience in it but a new car just has that correct feeling right feeling to it and something new to you I mean going from what year Two Thousand Four. Yeah Yeah Two Actually two thousand Two thousand six hundred sixty one thousand six hundred twenty seventeen almost ten years with many many miles on it. I'm sure it's probably just the more solid feeling vehicle underneath you. It's going to be nice. I'm excited about hearing about whatever you intend to do with this. You know honestly guys the fact that it might start it every time that I wanted to start flowing me

January Sales 2020: Everything You Need To Know About The New Year Discounts

"I want to just take a moment to hit you with some of the highlights of categories that historically are a deal and then talk about the ones that are more unusually discounted this year number. One this is true. Every January is fitness equipment is most heavily discounted in in January more than any other time of the year and the reason is that New Year's resolution time people are are stricken with the case the Gilts or seeing three unhappy digits on a scale and so it is like made to order for special deals on fitness equipment. I'm seeing them both online and in physical stores but I I liked to buy fitness equipment. Used and I know this may sound weird but many times. The best deals on fitness equipment anytime of year or on craigslist or on facebook neighborhood groups because a lot of times people will have bought nice exercise equipment many times new with the intention of really working out and then the only workout that equipment gets is as a place to drape clothing or something so people apple then hit a point where they give up and they say come and get it and the equipment sold nearly new but used used goes for a tiny tiny fraction of what it is new. Even when it's on sale like it is right now so heavily TV's are all the talk this week because of CIS going on the consumer electronics show and and this is the first time since. Gosh I don't even remember what year maybe two thousand nine was. The two thousand ten I guess was the first time I see something like that. I didn't go this year for the first time in all these consecutive years. Although I plan to return next next year to see us but as every other year there's all the fuss about eight K.. Televisions and A- lead. TV's TV's and Bob or Bobby Blah so for most of us that's aspirational stuff. That will become part of our lives years down the road. We just WANNA deal and the TV's that did not sell through. The Christmas shopping season are a real deal right now now and this is kind of a dead period before the new models are introduced into retail environments so there are a lot of deals. Both online and in physical stores was on televisions and normal. For this time of year bedding anything to do with housewares and bedding is a tremendous Indus. Deal in January true this year but there are a couple of things this year that are more heavily discounted than normal one one is toys. This was not the greatest year for sale of toys and this is the first year that retailers retailers bulked up so much trying to fill the market of the disappearance of toys R. US so there's a lot out of unsold inventory in the toy I'll and if you have a kid of an age that they go to a lot of birthday parties this would be a good time for you to speculatively by for a number of birthday party gifts for kids. Whose birthday parties your kid or kids are going to be going to? The other thing is clothing. Any winter clothing is more heavily discounted this year than in prior years ears and the travel sales that we normally have in January cruises airlines. All that is going on this year like normal. The airline sales are a little less generous this January than prior years because of the grounding of of the Max it has had the effect of constraining capacity. Gosh that was a stupid expression to use as such a pointy headed a communist kind of expression. There aren't as many seats out there as there would have been if the Max wasn't grounded. How's that so as a result airlines ends are not being as aggressive with the sales in January prior years but even with that? It's still a better deal. Well in most cases to buy travel

"She doesn't need you to then like cuss at her like her her husband. You know, don't add to the pressure. Just be like a friend who will listen like that's the friends that like when I'm gone through shit. Like, that's the best kind of people who are like, I'm not gonna like make this harder for you. Just gonna listen to all that stuff. But I think yeah, I think that they need to fit. Yeah. He has figured if he wants to work on that tune because that's the part that makes me sad like shit can happen in relationships. But like the party that has also like guilty should be the one like pioneering like the solutions being like we're going to therapy. I'm really working on this. And if he went one time to me that. It just sounds like a guy who doesn't have retention of Jia. You just went. So that he can say he went. Yeah. And I think even even if she wants to therapy to I think like saying you go to therapy. And it can also not work after therapy. Like deciding to go to therapy doesn't mean like over in this for the long haul. We're going to have kids. This is going to be like us are forever now, she can go, and they can go and she can realize and be like, you know, what I don't think this is working. I don't think this is changing. And I think it's also a really good way for her therapists will be honest like it'll be a good way for her to see if he does care and doesn't change. But who this is rough? And also like weirdly unique of like Craigslist, right? Did see it's been around since nineteen ninety five. So a while two years after I was born. Yeah. Wait, nineteen ninety-five over ninety three the med as meth adds up. So it's only two numbers if I do. But like, I just yeah. There's something weird here because this isn't like we've had calls before we're like girls have seen like their significant other their friends like husbands or whatever untendered and things like that. Like, this is such a I don't know like a weird way to go up out. Craigslist isn't I'm guessing when he first started getting into this graceless using Craigslist was the only thing he could go to and now that's what he's familiar with. Because he was in seventh grade. He wouldn't have tender wasn't around. Then he wouldn't have been able to get on dating websites. Yeah. So this is what was most successful to him. But he figured it out through his dad. That's I mean there. Yeah. So that's the whole thing that I'm kind of you know, there's something there. Something there with him. And he ought at that they need to maybe he needs therapy with his that. I don't know. But something needs to be figured out. Yeah. And it's not as happened when he was so go say, this is something that's like so ingrained in like in like a whole thing and therapy as like a habits and things that happened. Like when you start a certain habit when you're so young it just becomes a part of your identity and not necessarily not in like a positive way. Like, it becomes something that you associated with yourself and something that you have already come to terms with and that you kind of just deal with and you don't like an honestly like at this point, it probably has absolutely nothing to do with. No, exactly. Like, that's that's the part that sucks. It's like now, she is caught in the crossfire of something that like he'd isn't thinking about her, and it's not like any he's been doing this for so as been a part of his life more than it's than she's been a part of his life. Yeah. So there's something way way deeper here. And I think like, yeah, I think this is like a different kind of sense of like, the typical like cheating marriage things. But. She also didn't sign up for this. And I think that's like a big thing to end as somebody who has mental health problems. Like if somebody like, it would totally suck. If I was dating someone, and they were like, you know, I really can't like I don't wanna be with someone who likes struggles with that kind of stuff..

"It's still a great value. Oh, I've got somebody. That's calling to speak to me. Randy. I know they want to talk to me. Yeah. It's leeann Pinellas lead morning. Welcome to square talk on cars. How can I help you with your? Thank you. Are you sure about that? Well, I'm not sure which one I'm offering it to all right? Let's hear it. And we'll see I am the proud owner of a used Mazda. Transmission that I came by under some terrible circumstances. Some very very poor judgment on my part long story short. I'm driving a modest two hundred sixty thousand plus on a year ago last January almost two years ago. Now, I was told it things are desperate. I need to get another transmission because I had it serviced. And they indicated that it was about to fall out of the car. Well. Still driving on the same transmission? And long story short. What should I do with it? What would you? So you went and bought a used transmission anticipating that the other one was gonna go. Yeah. Wow. Could be the next day or seven days or two months or. That was gonna actually happen time for new mechanic. But anyway, Randy what do you suggest? Craigslist craigslist. Ebay EBay, not not not EBay. Never transmission. But yeah, maybe Craigslist, and that's a tough one because there aren't too many people at what wine what model Mazdas. Goes into one nine five nine Mazda five three Mazda Mazda three Mazda five. Yeah. That's you know, you might see some transmission shop might want it. But I don't know that's gonna be a tough one. Don't know what to tell you there early. But I'm glad the transmissions lasted one hundred and sixty thousand miles. They shouldn't. I don't know. It depends on the amount. You who knows who knows. But. Yeah. Craigslist or some kind of local listing Facebook marketplace stuff like that. I'm sure it's it's in the need for somebody. Yes. I mean, there's somebody out there that would. But you know, I should have offered to just put the shout out out there. But anyway, if if Lee wants to call us at the dealership and gives us a our his information, and if there's anybody out there listening that's got a Mazda five Ramaz to three oh nine ten eight. I guess saw the same should be right around there. Too leads. The transmission, I'll pass your phone number on Lee. So feel free to call its dealership. Seven two seven three four four three three four four. Brighter days may becoming really what do you think? If not brighter days. Maybe brighter nights. I don't know. I can only hope. Yeah. Now, you know, if we talked about I always say though, 'cause we talk about a lot of things before they ever come out. This is about us. Yeah. You get it. All right here. But you know, and they did a whole bunch of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tests in the past year or two in the insurance institute of highway safety seems like tons and tons and tons of vehicles failed because of headlights. Yes, he do. And thankfully know on our top end cars that have our that defend lights Mazdas were always rated pretty well, you know, they kind of turn with the wheel as you're turning. And if you've got your brakes on his oncoming traffic, they automatically dimmed themselves and things like that. But just this past Thursday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced plans to change regulations to help life development. They said in their report that they plan to allow the development of an adaptive driving bean. So basically what they're talking about like say Mazda has this on a couple of its vehicles. Maybe not quite what this is. But essentially were there, but basically what they're talking about is your headlights will operate as high beam headlights as a default and specific portions of the headlight would dim when oncoming vehicles are detected by the censors. So according to the national highway Safety Administration, they said the technology has the potential to reduce the risk of crashes Bank racing visibility without increasing glare, and it'll offer safety benefits for pedestrian cycle cyclists and even animals. So it's coming. It's a good thing. More technology out there and speaking of more technology. This is one that like you say if you would've asked me this two years ago three years ago, and I think if you would've asked Mazda this they'd say, no, no, no, it's not in our DNA. As we've talked about, you know, Mazdas says, you know, they finally confirmed it that they're going to revive the rotary engine to power arrange exp- extender on a hybrid vehicle. But they've also just announced is that they plan to electrify the entire lineup. The entire lineup by twenty thirty the entire line the entire lineup. That's basically eleven years away and the announce the plan announced basically, I guess it signals a diversification away from the dependence on the internal combustion engine. You know, Mazdas always said they're just gonna keep making it better. And better, which they are and. They're not saying that the entire the entire fleet will be electrify electric vehicles. But that they'll be some form of rhetoric electric vacation in every vehicle. So they're talking about hybrids, basically, and some electric cars, and that's all by every single vehicle by twenty thirty and that they say by twenty thirty as far as pure electric vehicles with range extenders, they're gonna count for somewhere neighbor to about ten to fifteen percent of Mazda's lineup with the balance being, you know, combustion engines paired with some sort of electrification. So, you know, while they're they're changing with the times. And that's one of the great things about Mazda that I've always said being a small company. They're nimble they're able to adjust. And you know, they know what their place in the market is in. But it's interesting the entire lineup twenty thirty. And it'll be here before you know, it will be. Yes. It will end us fly. Oh, I mentioned it before about Kia Hyundai. Bingo to recall nearly three million vehicles. Y- just yesterday the center for auto safety. They renewed calls because they've been asking for it for Hyundai Motor Corp, which is Hyundai Kia. Of course to recall almost three million crossovers and sedans. For potential non collision fire risks. They're saying the two thousand eleven through two thousand fourteen Kia Sorrento's optimism Hyundai sonata Hyundai Santa Fe's as well as twenty ten through twenty fifteen Kia souls. They petitioned the nitsa the Highway Traffic Safety administration in June to investigate complaints of non collision fires and burned wires. And it's now putting pressure on the company station were recall because the safety agencies review has not resulted in any action against the automaker. And their current remedy is not working they say. Now, this is only since June get this. So what are we talking about July August September about three months three or four months? In those three or four months the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as well as the center for auto safety. Received almost three hundred complaints. Of spontaneous fire related incidents. Wow. And federal regulators also say they've received complaints about fires resulting in collisions. And they're saying the number in the severity of the complaints. When people simply driving their cars on the highways. Frightening. It's long past time for key and Hyundai to act car-fires put everyone on the road and significant danger. And let's see what are they saying that a bit a bit a bit of a debatable based on the data collected to date. The manufacturer's inability or unwillingness to determine the cause of these fires on behalf of hundreds of thousands of key. And Hyundai owners customers who own cars, which are burst into flames. The center believes the additional remedy which is warranted is a full recall. I think I would agree with that have to do with that. That's that's a lot of incidents people a day complaining. Yeah. And that's only in the past three or four months, obviously, this has been going on for a while. Wow. And spontaneous combustion spontaneous combustion. So if you're driving one of those cars, something to be aware of if you smell burning wires is something you might want to contact with you. I think everybody should have a fire extinguisher in.

"Yeah, yeah, I was ashamed. Yeah, he was gonna walk in the room and see his dad in a corner, and they seem, here's this this rock. Nothing fazes me, but my son saw him. He might weakest point ever walks in and goes tad. Compared to the campout. And then what he did is that he took you put him in his back and he walked back to the campout. Yeah, that's like coming directly from the above. And that's a living proof that if you truly look at these, these pure kids and like as teachers life can change, that's the moment. When you look at your son as the teacher, the roles were reversed. He's teaching you strength. He's teaching you an experience from his point of view, and that that point you're like, I am going to be a diamond. 'cause I'm seeing a diamond in front of me shining that smile that he gives you is actual is actual the shines of the diamond. The light coming in through him and you're like, I'm going to be the lights, and I'm gonna be a diamond because a coil won't fuck in allow the light to come out. No diamonds reflect the light. So pivoting point for you. Talk about how did you build up up to now. How would you like when you allow the light to come in, what the delight do for you to be here sitting here talking about all this row. So literally immediately from that moment, I had realized, hey, my my sons aren't going to quit army, right? They're not gonna quit. The come back to the campout like forget all this was going to camp out. You know, like my sons aren't going to quit on me. I'm not going to quit on them and I literally. The immediately what I did was we all need money. I needed money to pay my bills. And from that point forward, I was actually finding construction jobs on Craigslist, like little like fix a toilet, like fix a thing. I would show up at somebody's house because this is the quickest way. I even knew how to get money at twenty bucks or hundred bucks and I'll go fix somebody's bathroom or something right. I'm not even a construction guy. I just needed money and so whatever labor job would ever it was, I could do that. Get some cash that day. I did it, but I would show up to the job at somebody's house with the stroller of my, my son in the stroller, and my other son, and they would play in the front yard. While I was in the guy's house doing whatever law task. It was just get some money like I did whatever it fucking took, and that's where that's what I think sets the difference is if you want about enough, you'll do whatever it takes your literally do what ever it takes. I was. Not even going to be happy with even a median income. I wanted to build something that night that night. What I told myself and what I promised myself was I would build something so big, our build something so large my out regrowed our build this impact empire, so big that I could never end up in that corner. Again, it would never happen to not only that that my great, great, great. Grandkids would never end up in that corner. Now, not saying that that we should have these trials because we should. But in my mind, I just wanted to build something so big that I would be so. Far from ever inning up in that corner where I couldn't feed my kids again. And, and so I started out by Craigslist ads on Craigslist. Just doing labor John. Yeah, right kids in the car kids plane. So when people say, well, I've got my kids and I couldn't make it to work. I couldn't do this. It's like, that's all bullshit. Like I had a baby and I had a son that cerebral palsy I had hospital visits going on at a car. Those try to still trying to get re. The guy was still show up and try to repossess my car houses in foreclosure. I still did whatever it took. And. And you're gonna miss camp outs in the midst of all this for the inclu..

"The the best known is craigslist list there's constantly people moving or downsizing and they're getting rid of their cat tree or you know maybe some toys or a bed and a lot of it is in really great condition and also facebook marketplaces and is a newer sort of database of second hand items so people go on the marketplace in enlisting per category so the ability to easily identify secondhand items in your community is easier than ever now and just like you were saying in the same respect if you are moving or downsizing or just want to get rid of some things or your cat doesn't like it it's much easier to give that to a family in need or donate it to a shelter or trade i mean i've treated many things on facebook marketplace and even craigslist and people are so appreciative of second hand items especially if it's going to enhance their cats i love that what is that called face the marketplace it's on facebook so it's okay it's kind of like craigslist but it's on facebook i i like it because you know craigslist is a great place but it's a little bit anonymous so with facebook you can actually see the person before you buy any items from them and just a side note for safety always always always meet in a public place if you are buying stuff online it's really important but i bought you know numerous pet items off of both craigslist and facebook marketplace and i feel a lot better doing not knowing that i'm not going out and buying extra things that have extra packaging and all of that so just one little little way you can be a little bit more planet friendly yes and like you said there's a lot of local places i've used there's a site called next door and it's basically like young neighborhood and not only and i did meet you know like you said i met someone in a public place and this was not even cat related i had in cartridges than they didn't have a printer anymore and i said i don't know if they work you wanna meet me here and he texted me after you know it was fine but i also and this is carolina was able to when we first moved our studio there are so many cats around and nobody was fixing the cats they were just feeding them so there was you know babies and babies so many so i got several of the kittens adopted through next door but i also found a cat trapper for the momma cat who is now fixed so there's great information out there with a lot of like local apps or you know places a lot of great things and you're so right about you know trading i'm ca toys or buying them there's so many people either they buy something and they have no use for it or cat won't go into it you know like a little house or something like that and it's much better to trade or by locally and it is greener for the environment because it costs less and it's rather than someone dumps it which means more garbage more trash landfill it's being repurpose to someone else absolutely and i think my favorite part that you know one thing we haven't mentioned is the fact that you can post on next door or facebook or craigslist sort of an insert of the post that say iso before them and you can say hey is anyone looking to get rid of the cat tree or does anyone have an extra cat carrier or maybe a backpack or a cat backpack like i feel like there's new technology and new items and accessories hitting the market every day but you can post a searching for ad and you'll be surprised at how many people look around and say okay well i guess my cat hasn't really used the cat tree in six months maybe i will give it away and i found a lot of items that way as well that's a great great idea now what do you do if you have something instead of in search of what what would you put giving away is there a like a g a or acronym these instead yeah i think a lot of it is i post a lot of stuff in free items to i think craigslist and facebook marketplace even next door has a free sections so if you're just looking to get something off your hands you're not really looking.

"So for customer service in marketing we get tons you know quite a feel and one problem with craigslist is sometimes those emails don't come through so so they'll filtered spam will never never make it to you so i you know some people we miss out on that way but looking through all these resumes it is difficult to choose who's going to be the best marketer these resumes look beautiful they're amazing of course everyone brags about themselves like i'm the best and and so you have to you kinda have to test them out to see who really is the best but through that process in looking at all these people there's one person that stood out really really well and what what she ended up doing is she she sent her resume it didn't make it craigslist filtered it as fan or something ever made it to my inbox i wasn't even going to consider of course because no resume so then she after she didn't hear back from a day or two later she came in she dropped off a resume and i had her resume in my inbox and i saw there it was like oh that's interesting when i put it on my desk i glance through it and i was like yeah equally good you know to all the rest that's pretty cool about an hour or two later she talked the people on the front of the office now there's about eight people between me and the door up there at a whole 'nother company used to be there if you do that company than about eight other people will she talked her way past that company and then had someone in our company escort her back to my office to introduce yourself to me.

"We all love target we all have homegoods but i don't want my whole house full of that stuff and i love finding really old cool things are daughter's bed is one hundred years old for example at found a really cool marble top dresser that lives in the foyer at the beach house and it just makes that whole space and you know my favorite of all time second hand came from facebook marketplace and it was that in lay dresser it's like a gray and white beautifully designed very intricate inlay pattern and it reaches for like maybe nineteen hundred i forget its restoration hardware so it's expensive is the point it was expensive for the birds new but it but i got it she on craigslist and i waited for her to come down and kind of stocked it and it was my like pride enjoy craigslist facebook marketplace same they're all the same thing in my head i just call them all craigslist craigslist is like the kleenex exactly term for facial tissue exactly you broke that down for people who understand anyone used the term facial tissue i don't think so no because people your toilet paper it's true but have you ever in your life said will you hand me some facial tissue okay let me get back to my jerry's you'll have to go to the show notes because no matter how many words i use been mentioned with the chairs are i know but i'm saying you can't describe these chairs adequately without a picture so go to the show notes that young house love dot com slash podcast you can see the chairs they are metal vintage large amazing chairs and they're outdoor chairs patio furniture and the way that i got them is pretty unusual i think because it was an ad for a large piece of driftwood and so i'm on facebook market blaze i see these chairs in the background with his big hunk of wit in the foreground i'm curious while you even clicked on the driftwood and the first place even in a little thumbnail i could see these white chairs and i was like oh i'm looking for patio furniture because that's the other residuals from the shopping band guys i'm not shopping browsing things i don't need so i now have a running tally in my head.
